Abstract
Background Spontaneous abortion (SA) is reported to be associated with Fat Mass And Obesity-Associated FTO genotype and dietary intake of selenium. This research assessed the potential interactions between the risk of SA, dietary selenium intake, and the FTO rs9939609 polymorphism. Methods This case-control study encompassed 192 women who experienced SA and 347 control participants. Dietary selenium intake was evaluated using a comprehensive food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and Nutritionist IV software. The FTO gene was genotyped for rs9939609 polymorphism. Result The findings showed that there were no significant variations in the case and control groups' dietary selenium intake. A lower selenium intake was inversely associated with SA only among individuals with the TT genotype of the FTO gene (β = -0.19, p = 0.04). The results remained unchanged when age, BMI, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and calorie intake were taken into account. Conclusion A link may exist between selenium consumption and SA, especially in individuals with the TT genotype in the FTO gene. These findings underline the influence of genetic factors on how dietary intake impacts SA. Further investigation is required to validate these conclusions.

Abstract
Genistin is an isoflavone of soybean, with estrogenic activity. This experiment was conducted to investigate its effect on reproductive performance, antioxidant capacity, and immunity in gestating sows. Seventy-two sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) were selected and randomly divided into two treatment groups (n = 36) based on their backfat thickness, parity and fed with basal diet or supplementation of 150 mg/ kg genistin to the basal diet based on DMI for the entire gestation period. Results showed that dietary genistin supplementation significantly increased the average number of live born per litter (p < 0.05), and tended to increase the number of healthy piglets per litter (p = 0.058), but decreased the average weight of live born per litter (p < 0.05). Dietary genistin supplementation significantly decreased the number of mummified and stillbirths per litter (p < 0.05). Moreover, the average daily feed intake (ADFI) and total feed intake of the gestating sows were also increased in the genistin-supplemented group (p < 0.05). Genistin significantly increased the serum concentrations of catalase (CAT), immunoglobulin A (IgA), IgG, and IgM at 35 days of gestation (p < 0.05). The serum concentrations of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) were also increased upon genistin supplementation (p < 0.05). However, genistin supplementation tended to decrease the serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and leptin at 85 days of gestation (p = 0.081 and p = 0.096, respectively). Interestingly, genistin supplementation decreased the transcript abundance of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and placental imprinting gene H19, but significantly increased the transcript abundance of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and amino acid transporters such as the sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter 2 (SNTA2) and SNAT4 in the placenta (p < 0.05). These results suggested that dietary genistin supplementation during gestation can improve the reproductive performance of sows, which was probably associated with improving of antioxidant capacity and immunity, as well as changes of transcript abundance of critical functional genes in the placenta.

Abstract
The long arm of the Y chromosome (Yq) contains many amplified and palindromic sequences that are prone to self-reorganization during spermatogenesis, and tiny submicroscopic segmental deletions in the proximal Yq are called Y chromosome microdeletions (YCM). A retrospective study was conducted on male infertility patients of Zhuang ethnicity who presented at Reproductive Medical Center of Nanning between January 2015 and May 2023. Seminal fluid was collected for standard examination. YCM were detected by using a combination of multiplex PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis. Preparation of peripheral blood chromosomes and karyotyping of chromosomes was performed. 147 cases (9.22%) of YCM were detected in 1596 male infertility patients of Zhuang ethnicity. Significant difference was found in the detection rate of YCM between the azoospermia group and the oligospermia group (P < 0.001). Of all types of YCM, the highest detection rate was AZFc (n = 83), followed by AZFb + c (n = 28). 264 cases (16.54%) of sex chromosomal aberrations were detected. The most prevalent karyotype was 47, XXY (n = 202). The detection rate of sex chromosomal aberrations in azoospermia group was higher than that in severe oligospermia group and oligospermia group, and the differences were significant (P < 0.001). 28 cases (1.57%) of autosomal aberrations and 105 cases (6.58%) of chromosomal polymorphism were identified. The current research has some limitations due to the lack of normal men as the control group but suggests that YCM and chromosomal aberrations represent key genetic factors influencing spermatogenesis in infertile males of Zhuang ethnicity in Guangxi.

Abstract
Purpose To date, the cause of recurrent miscarriage (RM) in at least 50% of patients remains unknown. However, no study has explored the correlation between butyrate metabolism-related genes (BMRGs) and RM. Methods RM-related datasets (GSE165004, GSE111974, GSE73025, and GSE179996) were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. First, 595 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between the RM and control samples in GSE165004. Subsequently, 213 differentially expressed BMRGs (DE-BMRGs) were identified by considering the intersection of DEGs with BMRGs. The protein-protein interaction (PPI)network of DE-BMRGs contained 156 nodes and 250 edges, and a key module was obtained. In total, four biomarkers (ACTR2, ANXA2, PFN1, and OAS1) were acquired through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE), and random forest (RF). Immune analysis revealed two immune cells and three immune-related gene sets that were significantly different between the RM and control groups, namely, T helper cells, regulatory T cells (Treg), MHC class I, parainflammation, and type I IFN response. In addition, a TF-mRNA network based on the top 100 nodes ranked in the order of connectivity was created, including 100 nodes and 253 edges, such as MTERF2-ACTR2, NKX23-PFN1, STAT1-OAS1, and SP100-ANXA2. Results Finally, 3 drugs (withaferin A, N-ethylmaleimide, and etoposide) were predicted to interact with 2 biomarkers (ANXA2 and ACTR2). Eventually, ANXA2 and OAS1 were significantly downregulated, and PFN1 was markedly overexpressed in the RM group, as determined by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Conclusion Our findings authenticated four butyrate metabolism-related biomarkers for the diagnosis of RM, providing a scientific reference for further studies on RM treatment.

Abstract
Reproductive activity is costly in terms of future reproduction and survival. Oxidative stress has been identified as a likely mechanism underlying this cost of reproduction. However, empirical studies have yielded the paradoxical observation that breeders often sustain lower levels of oxidative damage than non-breeders. The oxidative shielding hypothesis attempts to explain such data, and posits that breeders pre-emptively reduce levels of oxidative damage in order to protect their germ cells, and any resultant offspring, from harm caused by exposure to oxidative damage. While there is some empirical evidence of oxidative shielding in females, there have been no explicit tests of this hypothesis in males, despite evidence of the oxidative costs to the male reproductive effort and the vulnerability of sperm cells to oxidative damage. In this study, we assess lipid oxidative damage (malondialdehyde, MDA) in the ejaculates of reproducing and non-reproducing wild banded mongooses. We found that, among breeding males, ejaculate MDA levels were lower during mate competition compared to 2 months later, when individuals were not mating, which is consistent with the oxidative shielding hypothesis, and similar to findings in females. However, ejaculate MDA levels did not differ significantly between breeding and non-breeding individuals at the time of mating, contrary to expectation. The finding that ejaculate MDA was not higher in non-breeders may reflect individual differences in quality and hence oxidative stress. In particular, breeders were significantly older than non-breeders, which may obscure differences in oxidative damage due to reproductive investment. Further research is needed to establish the causal relationship between reproductive investment and oxidative damage in ejaculates, and the consequences for offspring development in banded mongooses and other species.

Abstract
The corpus luteum (CL) is a temporary endocrine gland that synthesizes progesterone. The luteal progesterone plays a central role in the regulation of the estrous cycle as well as the implantation and maintenance of pregnancy. Our previous study showed the expression of adropin and its receptor, GPR19, in the luteal cells and its significant role in luteinization. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro effect of adropin on hCG-induced ovarian functions in adult mice. We also evaluated the effect of exogenous treatment with adropin on ovarian steroidogenesis and anti-oxidant parameters, with special emphasis on CL function. Our results demonstrated that adropin acts synergistically with hCG to promote ovarian steroidogenesis and survival by increasing the expression of StAR, 3β-HSD, and aromatase proteins and decreasing the BAX/BCL2 ratio. Exogenous adropin treatment increased progesterone production by increasing the expression of GPR19, StAR and 3β-HSD enzymes in the mouse ovary. Also, adropin inhibited the luteal oxidative stress by increasing nuclear translocation of NRF-2 in CL, which resulted in increased HO-1 expression and SOD, catalase activity. Decreased oxidative stress might inhibit the translocation of NF-κB into the nucleus of luteal cells, resulting into increased survival and decreased apoptosis, as evident by decreased lipid peroxidation, BAX/BCL2 ratio, caspase 3, active caspase 3 expression, and TUNEL-positive cells in adropin treated mice. Our findings suggest that adropin can be a promising candidate that can enhance the survivability of the CL.

Abstract
Considering a circular economy perspective, this study evaluates the possible effect of targeted short-term supplementation with Withania somnifera L. (WS; Ashwagandha) on ram's seminal quality, socio-sexual behaviors, and blood constituents. Black Belly rams (n = 20) received a basal diet comprising feed-leftovers from dairy cows in the north-arid Mexico (i.e., Comarca Lagunera CL). The experimental units, with proven libido and fertility, were homogeneous in terms of age (3.41 ± 0.21 yr.), live weight (LW; 53.8 ± 3.3 kg), body condition (BC; 2.96 ± 0.01 units), initial sperm concentration (2387 ± 804 × 106), and viability (23.9 ± 15.6%). Rams were randomly assigned during the transition reproductive period (i.e., May to Jun; 25° NL) to three treatment groups: non-supplemented control group (CONT; n = 6), low WS-supplemented (LWS; i.e., 100 mg kg LW-1 d-1 × 40 d; n = 7), and high-WS-supplemented (HWS; i.e., 200 mg kg LW-1 d-1 × 40 d; n = 7). The basal leftover diet was offered twice daily (0700 and 1600 h); the experimental period (EP) lasted 47 d. No differences (p > 0.05) among treatments occurred regarding LW and BCS at the onset of the EP. Whereas the greater scrotal circumference (SCRC, cm) arose in the LWS and CONT rams, an increased ejaculated volume (VOLEJA, mL) occurred in the WS-rams. A total of 5/9 (i.e., 55%) appetitive and 3/3 (i.e., 100%) consummatory sexual behaviors favored (p < 0.05) the WS-rams, particularly the HWS rams, towards the final EP. The same was true (p < 0.05) regarding the hemogram variables white blood cell count (×109 cells L-1), hemoglobin concentration (g dL-1), and medium corpuscular volume (fL). This study, based on a rethink-reuse-reduce enquiry approach, enabled connectedness between two noteworthy animal systems in the CL: dairy cows and meat sheep schemes. Certainly, the use of dairy cow feed-leftovers aligned with the short-term supplementation with WS promoted enhanced testicular function, augmented seminal volume, and an increased sexual behavior in Black Belly rams in northern Mexico. Finally, while our research outcomes should enhance not only the resilience and sustainability of sheep production and the well-being of sheep-producers and their families, it may also embrace clinical translational applications.

Abstract
Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have improved infertility treatment but reproductive outcomes remain challenging. Nutrient supplementation is being explored to enhance pregnancy rates, increase live birth rates, and reduce miscarriage rates in females undergoing ART. Nutrients like folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants have shown potential benefits, yet conflicting results exist. Live birth rates may also be influenced by nutrient supplementation, with coenzyme Q10 and vitamin D showing promise. Miscarriage rates may be reduced with nutrients such as vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, although more research is needed for definitive conclusions. Scientific and medical literature databases such as Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Web of Science were queried to identify relevant English publications adhering to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Various reproductive metrics, encompassing biochemical pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate, ongoing pregnancy rate, implantation rate, live birth rates, and miscarriage rates, were assessed as clinical endpoints. The study population included 996 female subjects receiving ART. Two studies performed investigations on subjects diagnosed with unexplained infertility, two studies specifically included polycystic ovary syndrome patients, and five studies did not provide any specific information on the type of infertility or subfertility. All studies reported on the clinical/ongoing pregnancy rate, among which four included studies observed a significantly higher rate. Out of the four studies that reported on implantation rates, three found significantly higher rates in treatment groups. Out of the three studies that reported on biochemical pregnancy rates, two studies found significantly higher rates in treatment groups. With respect to the clinical outcomes that were studied in this analysis, variable effects of nutritional supplementation on reproductive parameters were observed. Some studies reported significantly higher rates of clinical/ongoing pregnancy, implantation, biochemical pregnancy, and live birth, while no significant difference was found in miscarriage rates.

Abstract
Infertility affects 15% of the population in developed countries, and its prevalence is increasing. Fertility can be influenced by different factors. Although key factors like maternal age cannot be changed, there is growing evidence that other modifiable factors, such as diet, can have an impact on fertility. Diet has become increasingly important in recent years for a number of reasons: the new trend toward a healthy lifestyle, the higher prevalence of certain digestive disorders, a lack of time that leads people to consume more prepared and processed food, and personal choice to not eat meat, among others. To meet these needs, several diets have recently become popular, such as the Mediterranean diet, known as the gold standard of health; the DASH diet, known for preventing hypertension; the Western diet, characterized by processed food; the ketogenic diet, characterized by low carbohydrate intake; and the vegetarian diet, which is the choice for people who do not eat meat or animal by-products. Diets present a unique composition characterized by the presence or absence of specific nutrients, which have also been associated with male and female fertility individually. This review assesses the impact of these diets and of macro- and micronutrients on both female and male fertility.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is characterized by consecutive pregnancy losses before 20 weeks of gestation, with evolving definitions necessitating adjustments to prevent delays in couples' evaluation. Limited etiological data on RPL prompts comprehensive evaluations, often yielding no pathological findings. Emerging research implicates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in various reproductive processes, yet its association with RPL remains understudied. AIM To evaluate ER stress in patients with RPL with unknown etiology by determining the plasma concentration of X-box binding protein-1 (XBP-1). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 45 patients aged 18 to 35 years with at least two pregnancy losses with unknown etiology before the completion of 20 weeks of gestation between March 2020 and September 2020 were included in the study group. The control group consisted of 45 healthy women with at least two previous live births, no pregnancy-associated complications, and no history of pregnancy loss or infertility. The XBP-1 levels were determined from serum samples. Statistical analyses assessed differences between groups, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis determined XBP-1's predictive value for RPL. RESULTS The mean XBP-1 concentration in the RPL group was significantly higher than in the control group (p < 0.001). The mean values were 2243.65 ± 9425.27 pg/mL and 1196.32 ± 4378.81 pg/mL, respectively. The use of XBP-1 levels for the prediction of RPL was evaluated. In an ROC curve analysis, the area under the curve was found to be 87% (95% CI: 80% to 94.8%). The specificity was 78%, the sensitivity was 88%, the positive likelihood ratio (LR) was 4, the negative LR was 0.15, the positive predictive value was 80%, and the negative predictive value was 87% for the cut-off XBP-1 level at 1364.68 pg/mL. CONCLUSION This study highlights the potential role of ER stress in RPL and proposes XBP-1 as a predictive biomarker for pregnancy loss. Understanding ER stress mechanisms in RPL could inform diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Further research is essential to validate these findings and explore their clinical implications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The imbalance between the generation and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is defined as oxidative stress (OS). Elevated levels of OS are implicated in various diseases, especially in gynecological and reproductive disorders. The abundance of recent literature makes it challenging to assimilate all available information. This bibliometric analysis seeks to depict the research landscape of OS in gynecological and reproductive diseases and to identify future hotspots and trends. METHODS The Web of Science Core Collection served as the source for articles related to OS in gynecological and reproductive diseases. CtieSpace and VOSviewer software were utilized to analyzed countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, and keywords of all eligible articles. RESULTS A total of 1423 articles were included. There was a gradual increase in the number of publications in this field. The USA maintained the highest number of publications, with 372 articles. Cleveland Clinic was the leading institution in terms of publication volume, contributing 67 articles. In total, 6925 authors were identified. Agarwal A as the most frequently co-cited author, received 812 citations across 43 publications. The predominant clusters included "placenta," "polycystic ovary syndrome," "male infertility," and "oocyte quality." Notably, "oocyte quality'" was identified as a current key research topic. CONCLUSION There was an uptrend in the number of articles addressing OS in gynecological and reproductive diseases. However, international collaboration and exchange were limited. The topic of male infertility had remained a consistent area of interest, and research on oocyte quality is poised to become a potential focal point in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association between urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (U8-OHdG) level-a marker of oxidative stress-and the incidence of preterm births (PTBs). DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). PARTICIPANTS Data from 92 715 women with singleton pregnancies at and after 22 weeks of gestation who were enrolled in the JECS, a nationwide birth cohort study, between 2011 and 2014 were analysed. U8-OHdG levels were assessed once in the second/third trimester using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Participants were categorised into the following three or five groups: low (<1.95 ng/mg urinary creatinine (Cre)), moderate (1.95-2.94 ng/mg Cre) and high (≥2.95 ng/mg Cre) U8-OHdG groups, or groups with <1.87, 1.87-2.20, 2.21-2.57, 2.58-3.11 and ≥3.12 ng/mg Cre. For stratification, participants with representative causes for artificial PTB were excluded. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Adjusted OR (aOR) for PTB before 37 and 34 weeks of gestation were calculated using a multivariable logistic regression model while adjusting for confounding factors; the moderate or lowest U8-OHdG group was used as the reference, respectively. RESULTS The aORs for PTB before 37 weeks of gestation in the high U8-OHdG group were 1.13 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.22) and 1.13 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.23) after stratification. The aOR for PTB before 37 weeks in the fourth group was 0.90 (95% CI 0.81 to 0.99). After stratification, the aORs for PTB before 37 and 34 weeks in the fifth group were 1.15 (95% CI 1.03 to 1.29) and 1.46 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.97), respectively. CONCLUSIONS High U8-OHdG levels were associated with increased PTB incidence, especially in participants without representative causes for artificial PTB. Our results can help identify the mechanisms leading to PTB, considering the variable aetiologies of this condition; further validation is needed to clarify clinical impacts.

Abstract
Miscarriages affect 50-70% of all conceptions and 15-20% of clinically recognized pregnancies. Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL, ≥2 miscarriages) affects 1-5% of recognized pregnancies. Nevertheless, our knowledge about the etiologies and pathophysiology of RPL is incomplete, and thus, reliable diagnostic/preventive tools are not yet available. Here, we aimed to define the diagnostic value of three placental proteins for RPL: human chorionic gonadotropin free beta-subunit (free-β-hCG), pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A), and placental growth factor (PlGF). Blood samples were collected from women with RPL (n = 14) and controls undergoing elective termination of pregnancy (n = 30) at the time of surgery. Maternal serum protein concentrations were measured by BRAHMS KRYPTOR Analyzer. Daily multiple of median (dMoM) values were calculated for gestational age-specific normalization. To obtain classifiers, logistic regression analysis was performed, and ROC curves were calculated. There were differences in changes of maternal serum protein concentrations with advancing healthy gestation. Between 6 and 13 weeks, women with RPL had lower concentrations and dMoMs of free β-hCG, PAPP-A, and PlGF than controls. PAPP-A dMoM had the best discriminative properties (AUC = 0.880). Between 9 and 13 weeks, discriminative properties of all protein dMoMs were excellent (free β-hCG: AUC = 0.975; PAPP-A: AUC = 0.998; PlGF: AUC = 0.924). In conclusion, free-β-hCG and PAPP-A are valuable biomarkers for RPL, especially between 9 and 13 weeks. Their decreased concentrations indicate the deterioration of placental functions, while lower PlGF levels indicate problems with placental angiogenesis after 9 weeks.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction play central roles in reduced oocyte quality and infertility in obese patients. Mitochondria-targeted treatments containing co-enzyme Q10 such as mitoquinone (MitoQ) can increase mitochondrial antioxidative capacity; however, their safety and efficiency when supplemented to oocytes under lipotoxic conditions have not been described. METHODS We tested the effect of different concentrations of MitoQ or its cationic carrier (TPP) (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 μM each) during bovine oocyte IVM. Then, we tested the protective capacity of MitoQ (0.1 μM) against palmitic acid (PA)-induced lipotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction in oocytes. RESULTS Exposure to MitoQ, or TPP only, at 1 μM significantly (P<0.05) reduced oocyte mitochondrial inner membrane potential (JC-1 staining) and resulted in reduced cleavage and blastocyst rates compared with solvent control. Lower concentrations of MitoQ or TPP had no effects on embryo development under control (PA-free) conditions. As expected, PA increased the levels of MMP and ROS in oocytes (CellROX staining) and reduced cleavage and blastocyst rates compared with the controls (P<0.05). These negative effects were ameliorated by 0.1 μM MitoQ. In contrast, 0.1 μM TPP alone had no protective effects. MitoQ also normalized the expression of HSP10 and TFAM, and partially normalized HSP60 in the produced blastocysts, indicating at least a partial alleviation of PA-induced mitochondrial stress. CONCLUSION Oocyte exposure to MitoQ may disturb mitochondrial bioenergetic functions and developmental capacity due to a TPP-induced cationic overload. A fine-tuned concentration of MitoQ can protect against lipotoxicity-induced mitochondrial stress during IVM and restore developmental competence and embryo quality.

Abstract
PROBLEM Increased oxidative stress (OS) and inflammatory responses are major underlying factors behind Chlamydia trachomatis-associated recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). miRNAs are known to regulate inflammation and OS and their dysregulation has been associated with compromised pregnancies. Therefore, aim of this study was to investigate the expression/correlation of OS biomarkers, cytokines and miRNAs in C. trachomatis-associated RSA. METHOD OF STUDY Urine and non-heparinized blood samples were collected from RSA patients with history of >3 consecutive abortions (cases) and non-pregnant women with history of >2 successful deliveries (controls) attending Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Safdarjung hospital, New Delhi. C. trachomatis detection was done in urine by PCR. miRNA expression was studied by microarray analysis and validated by real time-PCR. Evaluation of cytokines and antioxidant genes expression were done by real-time PCR. Level of OS biomarkers 8-hydroxy guanosine (8-OHdG) and 8-isporostane (8-IP) were measured by ELISA. RESULTS Fifty circulating miRNAs were differentially expressed in infected patients compared with controls. Of these, four were overexpressed and 46 downregulated. Thirteen differentially expressed circulating miRNAs were selected to validate microarray results. miRs-8069, -3663-3p showed maximum upregulation/downregulation in infected versus control group. Expression of cytokines (IL-8, TNF-α, IFN-γ), antioxidant genes SOD2 and OS biomarkers (8-OHdG,8-IP) were increased while SOD1 was decreased in infected patients. miR-8069 showed significant positive correlation with cytokines, SOD2, 8-OHdG and 8-IP. miR-3663-3p showed significant positive correlation with SOD1. CONCLUSIONS Overall results indicate circulating miRNAs are involved in pathogenesis of C. trachomatis-associated RSA and are potential modulators of cytokine signalling and OS in infected RSA.

Abstract
Reproduction is expected to carry an oxidative cost, yet in many species breeders appear to sustain lower levels of oxidative damage compared to non-breeders. This paradox may be explained by considering the intergenerational costs of reproduction. Specifically, a reduction in oxidative damage upon transitioning to a reproductive state may represent a pre-emptive shielding strategy to protect the next generation from intergenerational oxidative damage (IOD) - known as the oxidative shielding hypothesis. Males may be particularly likely to transmit IOD, because sperm are highly susceptible to oxidative damage. Yet, the possibility of male-mediated IOD remains largely uninvestigated. Here, we present a conceptual and methodological framework to assess intergenerational costs of reproduction and oxidative shielding of the germline in males. We discuss variance in reproductive costs and expected payoffs of oxidative shielding according to species' life histories, and the expected impact on offspring fitness. Oxidative shielding presents an opportunity to incorporate intergenerational effects into the advancing field of life-history evolution.

Abstract
Recent years have seen an increased interest in the role of oxidative stress (OS) in pregnancy. Pregnancy inherently heightens susceptibility to OS, a condition fueled by a systemic inflammatory response that culminates in an elevated presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in the circulatory system. The amplified OS in pregnancy can trigger a series of detrimental outcomes such as underdevelopment, abnormal placental function, and a host of pregnancy complications, including pre-eclampsia, embryonic resorption, recurrent pregnancy loss, fetal developmental anomalies, intrauterine growth restriction, and, in extreme instances, fetal death. The body's response to mitigate the uncontrolled increase in RNS/ROS levels requires trace elements that take part in non-enzymatic and enzymatic defense processes, namely, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se). Determination of ROS concentrations poses a challenge due to their short half-lives, prompting the use of marker proteins, including malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH). These markers, indicative of oxidative stress intensity, can offer indirect assessments of pregnancy complications. Given the limitations of conducting experimental studies on pregnant women, animal models serve as valuable substitutes for in-depth research. This review of such models delves into the mechanism of OS in pregnancy and underscores the pivotal role of OS markers in their evaluation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oxidative stress biomarkers (OSBs) may be strongly associated with disease progression and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). However, the research on associations of most OSBs (e.g., 8-nitroguanine [8-NO2Gua] and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal-mercapturic acid [HNE-MA]) with RPL is limited. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of OSBs exposure on RPL risk by performing a case-control study. MATERIAL AND METHODS We use our established dataset, Taiwan Recurrent Pregnancy Loss and Environmental Study (TREPLES), which included 514 Taiwanese reproductive age women (aged 20-50 years; 397 cases and 117 controls) from National Cheng Kung University Hospital. RPL is clinically defined by a history of two or more consecutive miscarriages, where a miscarriage is defined as the termination of pregnancy before 20 weeks of gestation. The urinary levels of several OSBs (e.g., 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG], 8-NO2Gua, 8-isoprostaglandin F2α [8-isoPGF2α], and HNE-MA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured using isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, respectively. RESULTS The median levels of 8-NO2Gua (6.15 vs. 3.76 ng/mL) and HNE-MA (30.12 and 21.54 ng/mL) were significantly higher in the RPL group than in the control group. By categorizing the OSBs data into tertiles, after we adjusted for age and urine creatinine levels discovered that the RPL risk associated with 8-NO2Gua and HNE-MA levels in the third tertile were approximately 2 times higher than those in the first tertile (8-NO2Gua, adjusted OR = 3.27, 95 % CI = 1.66-6.43; HNE-MA, adjusted OR = 1.96, 95 % CI = 1.05-3.64; p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the oxidative stress biomarkers of 8-NO2Gua and HNE-MA are risk factors for RPL. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that specific OSBs are associated with an increased RPL risk, suggesting that reducing OSB levels can improve RPL risk. Nevertheless, more studies on preventive medicine are required to understand the exposure sources and adverse outcome pathways of OSBs associated with RPL.

Abstract
The male contribution to a couple suffering with adverse early pregnancy outcomes is being increasingly investigated. Seminal oxidative stress is considered to cause sperm DNA damage, thus affecting the functional capacity of the sperm. Multiple lines of evidence support an association between elevated seminal reactive oxygen species (ROS) and infertility. In the setting of assisted reproduction various factors in the in vitro environment, differing from the in vivo environment, may exacerbate oxidative stress. Furthermore, seminal ROS levels have been found to be higher in the male partners of couple's affected by both spontaneous and recurrent pregnancy loss. There are several methods by which to assess ROS levels however they are costly, inconsistent and their incorporation into clinical practice is unclear. The value of ROS assessment lies in the ability to plan targeted therapies to improve pregnancy and live birth rates. As such, further robust study is required before firm conclusions can be made to inform clinical practice. We aim to review the available evidence regarding the role of seminal ROS in infertility and pregnancy loss.

Abstract
Pregnancy requires a high demand of energy, which leads to an increase of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to assess the oxidative status in 200 couples of pregnant women-newborns at the time of delivery, for the first time, who gave birth in two University Hospitals from the province of Seville. Recruited women filled an epidemiological questionnaire with their demographic characteristics and dietary habits during pregnancy. At the time of delivery, both maternal and cord blood samples were collected. Protein oxidation, superoxide dismutase, and catalase levels were measured to assess the oxidative status of these women, together with the levels of vitamins D, B12, Zn, Se, and Cu. Our results showed a tendency for all biomarkers measured to be higher in cord blood than in maternal blood. For the correlations established between the OS markers and sociodemographic characteristics, only significant differences for carbonyl groups values were found on both maternal and cord blood, relating these higher values to the use of insecticides in the women's homes. For newborns, only a significant correlation was detected between antioxidant enzymes and the newborn's weight, specifically for superoxide dismutase activity. Additionally, the higher values obtained in cord blood might suggest metabolization, while a higher production of ROS and antioxidant enzymes might be required to maintain the balance. Measured levels for Se were similar in both maternal and cord blood, unlike Cu and Zn, where higher levels were found for maternal blood than cord blood, indicating a correlation between maternal Se values and SOD as OS biomarker. Furthermore, vitamin D levels were around the optimum values established, finding a relationship between vitamin D and new-born's height, unlike for vitamin B12 values, where a correlation with maternal food consumption characteristics was established. Overall values were inside normal ranges and consistent for our population.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic disease associated with a disrupted oxidative balance and chronic inflammation. In this study, we investigated the role of glutathione S-transferase Mu class 4 (GSTM4) in endometriosis and determined whether 6-(7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-ylthio) hexanol (NBDHEX) regulates GSTM4 expression to affect cellular functions and oxidative stress. GSTM4 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry in endometrium from 15 endometriosis patients and 15 healthy controls. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of GSTM4, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), Survivin, B-cell lymphoma-extra-large (Bcl-XL), Bax, kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), and nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in primary endometrial stromal cells with endometriosis (EESC) and normal endometrial stromal cells (NESC). The effects of NBDHEX on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) and Transwell assays. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The expression of GSTM4 was significantly increased in endometrium from endometriosis patients. Upon NBDHEX treatment, ESC exhibited reduced proliferation, migration and invasion abilities, and increased apoptosis. NBDHEX decreased the expression of endometriosis prognostic markers (PCNA and MMP-9) and anti-apoptotic proteins (Survivin and Bcl-xl), while it increased the expression of the apoptotic protein Bax. It had no effect on Keap1 expression, and it decreased the expression of Nrf2. The effect of siRNA-mediated knockdown of GSTM4 was similar to that of suppressing GSTM4 expression with NBDHEX treatment. These results indicate that GSTM4 is highly expressed in endometriosis and its expression is inhibited by NBDHEX. Decreased expression of GSTM4 inhibits cell growth, migration, and invasion, and negatively regulates Nrf2 to affect oxidative stress-induced apoptosis. Our results suggest that GSTM4 may play a role in ameliorating the progression of endometriosis. NBDHEX may have therapeutic potential in the treatment of endometriosis.

Abstract
Recurrent miscarriage (RM) affects approximately 1%-5% of couples worldwide. Due to its complicated etiologies, the treatments for RM also vary greatly, including surgery for anatomic factors such as septate uterus and uterine adhesions, thyroid modulation drugs for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, and aspirin and low molecular weight heparin for antiphospholipid syndrome. However, these treatment modalities are still insufficient to solve RM. Omega-3 fatty acids are reported to modulate the dysregulation of immune cells, oxidative stress, endocrine disorders, inflammation, etc., which are closely associated with the pathogenesis of RM. However, there is a lack of a systematic description of the involvement of omega-3 fatty acids in treating RM, and the underlying mechanisms are also not clear. In this review, we sought to determine the potential mechanisms that are highly associated with the pathogenesis of RM and the regulation of omega-3 fatty acids on these mechanisms. In addition, we also highlighted the direct and indirect clinical evidence of omega-3 fatty acid supplements to treat RM, which might encourage the application of omega-3 fatty acids to treat RM, thus improving pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS), which arises through an imbalance between the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses, plays a key role in the pathophysiology of female infertility, with the latter constituting just one of a number of diseases linked to OS as a potential cause. The aim of the present article is to review the literature regarding the association between OS and female infertility. Among the reproductive diseases considered are endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), while environmental pollutants, lifestyle variables, and underlying medical conditions possibly resulting in OS are additionally examined. Current evidence points to OS likely contributing to the pathophysiology of the above reproductive disorders, with the amount of damage done by OS being influenced by such variables as duration and severity of exposure and the individual's age and genetic predisposition. Also discussed are the processes via which OS may affect female fertility, these including DNA damage and mitochondrial dysfunction. Finally, the last section of the manuscript contains an evaluation of treatment options, including antioxidants and lifestyle modification, capable of minimizing OS in infertile women. The prime message underlined by this review is the importance of considering OS in the diagnosis and treatment of female infertility. Further studies are, nevertheless required to identify the best treatment regimen and its ideal duration.

Abstract
With 40% of idiopathic cases, recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is a problem of great concern for patients and clinicians. In addition to financial burden, it causes a lot of frustration and anxiety in affected couples. The primary objective of this review was to gain knowledge of recent advances in the field of recurrent pregnancy losses and to understand the role of male contributory factors in idiopathic cases. For a long time, researchers and clinicians were seeking an explanation for idiopathic RPL (iRPL) in females only; however, with recent advances in reproductive biology, the role of spermatozoa in early embryonic development has caught the attention of researchers. Clinically, only routine semen parameters and karyotyping are investigated in iRPL male partners, which seem to be insufficient in the present scenario, and thus, more information at the molecular level is required for a comprehensive understanding of iRPL. In concluding remarks, we suggest targeted multi-omics investigations in a large cohort to improve our understanding of the role of male contributory factors in iRPL.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Is there a relationship between pregnancy termination history and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and if so, is the relationship moderated by physical activity (PA)? SUMMARY ANSWER Induced abortion, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, increased the risk of MetS, while leisure PA attenuated the effects of induced abortion, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, on the risk of MetS. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Pregnancy termination history is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but studies on women's history of pregnancy termination and MetS are limited. PA is a preventive behavior for MetS, but its modification effect on any association between pregnancy termination history and MetS is unknown. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION The cross-sectional study included 53 702 women (age range of 30-79 years old) from southwestern China who participated in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study from May 2018 to September 2019. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Participants self-reported both the number and type of pregnancy termination. PA was assessed primarily by asking participants about the cumulative time they spent doing PA either as their occupation, transportation, housework, and leisure activity in the past year. MetS was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE After adjusting for all confounders, the risk of MetS was significantly increased in women who experienced induced abortion alone, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.08 (95% CI = 1.03-1.13) and 1.20 (95% CI = 1.08-1.33), respectively. A dose-response relationship was observed between the number of induced abortions and MetS, with the risk increasing by 3.0% for every additional induced abortion (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01-1.05). Leisure PA had a significant modification effect on the relationship between pregnancy termination history and MetS, as leisure PA attenuates the negative effects of induced abortion on MetS. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Causality cannot be established in this study. Information on pregnancy termination and PA was collected by self-report, which might be subject to recall bias. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS A history of induced abortion was associated with an increased risk of MetS, and the risk increased with the number of induced abortions. Leisure PA attenuated the negative effect of induced abortion on MetS, whereas occupational and transportation PA amplified the negative effect of induced abortion on glucose. Abstract
The global birth rate has recently shown a decreasing trend, and exposure to environmental pollutants has been identified as a potential factor affecting female reproductive health. Phthalates have been widely used as plasticizers in plastic containers, children's toys, and medical devices, and their ubiquitous presence and endocrine-disrupting potential have already raised particular concerns. Phthalate exposure has been linked to various adverse health outcomes, including reproductive diseases. Given that many phthalates are gradually being banned, a growing number of phthalate alternatives are becoming popular, such as di(isononyl) cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH), di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA), and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHTP), and they are beginning to have a wide range of environmental effects. Studies have shown that many phthalate alternatives may disrupt female reproductive function by altering the estrous cycle, causing ovarian follicular atresia, and prolonging the gestational cycle, which raises growing concerns about their potential health risks. Herein, we summarize the effects of phthalates and their common alternatives in different female models, the exposure levels that influence the reproductive system, and the effects on female reproductive impairment, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and offspring development. Additionally, we scrutinize the effects of phthalates and their alternatives on hormone signaling, oxidative stress, and intracellular signaling to explore the underlying mechanisms of action on female reproductive health, because these chemicals may affect reproductive tissues directly or indirectly through endocrine disruption. Given the declining global trends of female reproductive capacity and the potential ability of phthalates and their alternatives to negatively impact female reproductive health, a more comprehensive study is needed to understand their effects on the human body and their underlying mechanisms. These findings may have an important role in improving female reproductive health and in turn decreasing the number of complications during pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress generated by Chlamydia trachomatis infection is associated with reproductive complications such as recurrent spontaneous abortion. Aim of prospective study was to evaluate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of SOD1 and SOD2 gene are associated with C. trachomatis-infected recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). METHODS 150 patients with history of RSA and 150 patients with history of successful deliveries were recruited from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Safdarjung hospital, New Delhi, India. Urine and non-heparinized blood samples were collected and C. trachomatis was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Using qualitative real time PCR, SNPs rs4998557 (SOD1) and rs4880 (SOD2) were screened in enrolled patients. Level of 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 8-isoprostane (8-IP), progesterone and estrogen was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and correlated with SNPs. RESULTS Significant differences were found in frequency of AA genotype of SOD1 gene among RSA patients versus controls, (82% and 54.66%, respectively; p = 0.02; OR 0.40; CI 95%). Frequency of AA genotype of SOD1 gene among RSA patients with C. trachomatis infection was 87.33%, while in uninfected RSA patients was 71.33% (p < 0.0001; OR 8; CI 95%). No significant relation was found between SOD2 (rs4880) genotype and RSA. Furthermore, significant increase in 8-OHdG, 8-IP and estrogen and significant decrease in progesterone was observed among patients carrying AA genotype. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest the clinical importance of AA genotype along with 8-OHdG, 8-IP and estrogen and progesterone in screening C. trachomatis-infected RSA women.

Abstract
With increasing technological developments, exposure to non-ionizing radiations has become unavoidable as people cannot escape from electromagnetic field sources, such as Wi-Fi, electric wires, microwave oven, radio, telecommunication, bluetooth devices, etc. These radiations can be associated with increased health problems of the users. This review aims to determine the effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiations on female fertility. To date, several in vitro and in vivo studies unveiled that exposure to non-ionizing radiations brings about harmful effects on oocytes, ovarian follicles, endometrial tissue, estrous cycle, reproductive endocrine hormones, developing embryo, and fetal development in animal models. Non-ionizing radiation also upsurges the free radical load in the uterus and ovary, which leads to inhibition of cell growth and DNA disruptions. In conclusion, non-ionizing electromagnetic radiations can cause alterations in both germ cells as well as in their nourishing environment and also affect other female reproductive parameters that might lead to infertility.

Abstract
Recurrent pregnancy loss is a distressing condition affecting 1–2% of couples. Traditionally investigations have focused on the female, however more recently researchers have started to explore the potential contribution of the male partner. Seminal reactive oxygen species have a physiological function in male reproduction but in excess are suspected to generate structural and functional damage to the sperm. Evidence is mounting to support an association between elevated seminal reaction oxygen species and recurrent pregnancy loss. Studies suggest that the rates of sperm DNA damage are higher in the male partners of women affected by recurrent pregnancy loss compared with unaffected men. However, the available pool of data is conflicting, and interpretation is limited by the recent change in nomenclature and the heterogeneity of study methodologies. Furthermore, investigation into the effects of oxidative stress on the epigenome show promise. The value of antioxidant therapy in the management of recurrent pregnancy loss currently remains unclear.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of environmental endocrine disruptors with known carcinogenic, reproductive, and developmental toxicity. Important knowledge gaps remain regarding the relationship between PAH exposure and unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA). In the present study, twelve monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) were measured in the urine of 413 URSA cases and 434 controls. The main OH-PAHs measured in this study were monohydroxy metabolites of naphthalene, followed by fluorene and phenanthrene. After the creatinine correction, the median concentration of urinary OH-PAHs in the control group (17.4 μg/g Creatinine) was higher than that in the case group (14.2 μg/g Creatinine). There was no positive relationship between PAH exposure and URSA using binary logistic regression analysis. Among 847 Chinese women of childbearing age, residential environment, type of drinking water, and education level were the influencing factors of PAH exposure. The health risk assessment showed that over 98% of women had a carcinogenic risk with carcinogenic risk values above the acceptable level (10-6). Although this large-scale case-control study did not observe an association between PAH exposure and URSA, more attention should be paid to the high carcinogenic risk due to PAH exposure in women of reproductive age.

Abstract
Considerable evidence shows that oxidative stress exists in the pathophysiological process of female reproductive system diseases. At present, there have been many studies on oxidative stress of placenta during pregnancy, especially for preeclampsia. However, studies that directly focus on the effects of oxidative stress on blood vessels at the maternal-fetal interface and their associated possible outcomes are still incomplete and ambiguous. To provide an option for early clinical prediction and therapeutic application of oxidative stress in female reproductive system diseases, this paper briefly describes the composition of the maternal-fetal interface and the molecular mediators produced by oxidative stress, focuses on the sources of oxidative stress and the signaling pathways of oxidative stress at the maternal-fetal interface, expounds the adverse consequences of oxidative stress on blood vessels, and deeply discusses the relationship between oxidative stress and some pregnancy complications and other female reproductive system diseases.

Abstract
2,2,4,4-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) has received considerable attention because of its high level in biological samples and potential developmental toxicity. Whether BDE-47 ingestion affects ovarian hormone secretion and the detailed underlying mechanism have not been clearly elucidated. The present study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of BDE-47 on ovarian hormone secretion and explored the underlying mechanism. The results showed that exposure to BDE-47 caused ovarian lipid deposition and ovarian hormone disruption accompanied by oxidative stress (OS) and downregulation of hormone biosynthesis-related proteins in mice. Mechanistically, using ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) as a cellular model, it was shown that BDE-47 inhibited two ovarian hormone secretion-associated pathways: i) BDE-47 exposure induced OS via the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway and further inhibited the expressions of ovarian hormone biosynthesis-related proteins, such as StAR, 3-βHSD, CYP11A1, and CYP17A1; ii) BDE-47 induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, mitochondrial abnormalities, and lipotoxicity, which in turn disrupted the hormone biosynthesis process and inhibited ovarian hormone secretion. Interestingly, autophagy could promote hormone secretion via downregulating the transcription levels of PPARγ and C/EBPα involved in lipid deposition. Moreover, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger NAC and ER stress inhibitor 4-PBA not only inhibited the decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential but also blocked apoptosis induced by BDE-47, indicating that two individual pathways mediated apoptosis in GCs: the ER stress-mediated signaling pathway and the ROS-mediated mitochondrial signaling pathway. Together, these findings indicate the possible health risks of BDE-47 pollution areas to women, particularly affecting their ovarian hormone secretion.

Abstract
Humans are exposed to a number of environmental pollutants every day. Among them, endocrine disruptors are particularly harmful to human health. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a xenoestrogen that has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive toxicity. In this study, we aimed to verify the potential relationship between BPA and miscarriage involving the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Blood samples were collected from healthy women and women who had miscarriage in the first trimester of pregnancy. The serum levels of cytoplasmic anti-PR3 antibody and perinuclear anti-MPO antibody were determined using an immunoenzymatic method. The concentrations of key proinflammatory proteins TNF-α and MCP-1, as well as NADPH oxidase subunits NOX1 and NCF2, were also measured in the serum samples. The serum concentration of BPA was determined using gas chromatography. The results showed that the concentrations of BPA were significantly elevated in the serum of women who had miscarriage compared to the control group, with the highest concentration found in the “NETs-positive” group. The levels of MCP-1 and TNF-α were significantly higher in the “NETs-positive” group compared to the “NETs-negative” and control group. The levels of NOX1 and NCF2 were also higher in the “NETs-positive” group compared to the “NETs-negative” group. The study showed that BPA could play a role in the course of miscarriage through the formation of NETs. The results indicate the need to limit the exposure of women planning pregnancy to xenoestrogens, including BPA.

Abstract
Untainted environment promotes health, but the last few decades experienced steep upsurge in environmental contaminants posing detrimental physiological impact. The responsible factors mainly include the exponential growth of human population, havoc rise in industrialization, poorly planned urbanization, and slapdash environment management. Environmental degradation can increase the likelihood of human exposure to heavy metals, resulting in health consequences such as reproductive problems. As a result, research into metal-induced causes of reproductive impairment at the genetic, epigenetic, and biochemical levels must be strengthened further. These metals impact upon the female reproduction at all strata of its regulation and functions, be it development, maturation, or endocrine functions, and are linked to an increase in the causes of infertility in women. Chronic exposures to the heavy metals may lead to breast cancer, endometriosis, endometrial cancer, menstrual disorders, and spontaneous abortions, as well as pre-term deliveries, stillbirths. For example, endometriosis, endometrial cancer, and spontaneous abortions are all caused by the metalloestrogen cadmium (Cd); lead (Pb) levels over a certain threshold can cause spontaneous abortion and have a teratogenic impact; toxic amounts of mercury (Hg) have an influence on the menstrual cycle, which can lead to infertility. Impact of environmental exposure to heavy metals on female fertility is therefore a well-known fact. Thus, the underlying mechanisms must be explained and periodically updated, given the growing evidence on the influence of increasing environmental heavy metal load on female fertility. The purpose of this review is to give a concise overview of how heavy metal affects female reproductive health.

Abstract
Study aimed to characterize the expression of antioxidant genes SOD1 and SOD2 in Chlamydia trachomatis-induced recurrent spontaneous aborters and further determine their role by in silico analysis. First void urine was collected from 130 non-pregnant women with history of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) (Group I) and 130 non-pregnant women (Group II; control) attending Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, SJH, New Delhi, India. C. trachomatis detection was performed by conventional PCR in urine. Gene expression of SOD1 and SOD2 was performed by quantitative real-time PCR. Further, its interacting partners were studied by in silico analysis. 22 patients were positive for C. trachomatis in Group I. Significant upregulation was observed for SOD2 gene in C. trachomatis-infected RSA patients while SOD1 was found to be downregulated. Increased concentration of oxidative stress biomarkers 8-hydroxyguanosine and 8-isoprostane was found in C. trachomatis-infected RSA patients. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) of SOD proteins and its interacting partners viz.; CCS, GPX1, GPX2, GPX3, GPX4, GPX5, GPX7, GPX8, CAT, PRDX1, TXN, SIRT3, FOXO3, and AKT1 were found to be involved in MAPK, p53 and foxo signaling pathways. Molecular pathways involved in association with SODs indicate reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification, apoptotic pathways and cell cycle regulation. Overall data revealed alleviated levels of SOD2 gene and decreased expression of SOD1 gene in response to C. trachomatis-infection leading to production of oxidative stress and RSA.

Abstract
Radiofrequency radiation (RFR) as an environmental and physical pollutant may induce vulnerability to toxicity and disturb fetal development. Therefore, the potential health effects of short-term mobile phone like RFR exposure (GSM 1800 MHz; 14 V/m, 2 mW/kg specific absorption rate (SAR) during 15 min/day for a week) during pregnancy and also the development of fetuses were investigated. Hepatic glucose regulation and glutathione-dependent enzymes' capacities were biochemically analyzed in adult (female) and pregnant New Zealand White rabbits. Pregnant rabbits' two-day-old offspring were included to understand their developmental stages under short-term maternal RFR exposure. We analyzed two regulatory enzymes in the oxidative phase of phosphogluconate pathways to interpret the cytosolic NADPH's biosynthesis for maintaining mitochondrial energy metabolism. Moreover, the efficiencies of maternal glutathione-dependent enzymes on both the removal of metabolic disturbances during pregnancy and fetus development were examined. Whole-body RFR exposures were applied to pregnant animals from the 15th to the 22nd day of their gestations, i.e., the maturation periods of tissues and organs for rabbit fetuses. There were significant differences in hepatic glucose regulation and GSH-dependent enzymes' capacities with pregnancy and short-term RFR exposure. Consequently, we observed that intrauterine exposure to RFR might lead to cellular ROS- dependent disturbances in metabolic activity and any deficiency in the intracellular antioxidant (ROS-scavenging) system. This study might be a novel insight into further studies on the possible effects of short-term RF exposure and prenatal development.

Abstract
(1) Background: Miscarriages occur in approximately 15–25% of all pregnancies. There is limited evidence suggesting an association between history of miscarriage and the development of diabetic and hypertensive disorders in women. This systematic review aims to collate the existing literature and provide up to date epidemiological evidence on the topic. (2) Methods: We will search CINAHL Plus, Ovid/EMBASE, Ovid/MEDLINE, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, using a combination of medical subject headings, keywords, and search terms, for relevant articles related to the association between miscarriage and the risk of diabetic and hypertensive disorders. Cross-sectional, case–control, nested case–control, case–cohort, and cohort studies published from inception to April 2022 will be included in the search strategy. Three reviewers will independently screen studies and the risk of bias will be assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool. Where the data permit, a meta-analysis will be conducted. (3) Results: The results of this systematic review will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. (4) Conclusions: The findings of this systematic review will instigate efforts to manage and prevent reproductive, cardiovascular, and metabolic health consequences associated with miscarriages.

Abstract
Objective: we performed a systematic review/meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of septate uterus and hysteroscopic metroplasty on pregnancy rate-(PR), live birth rate-(LBR), spontaneous abortion-(SA) and preterm labor (PL) in infertile/recurrent miscarriage-(RM) patients. Data sources: a literature search of relevant papers was conducted using electronic bibliographic databases (Medline, Scopus, Embase, Science direct). Study eligibility criteria: we included in this meta-analysis all types of observational studies that evaluated the clinical impact of the uterine septum and its resection (hysteroscopic metroplasty) on reproductive and obstetrics outcomes. The population included were patients with a diagnosis of infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss. Study appraisal and synthesis methods: outcomes were evaluated according to three subgroups: (i) Women with untreated uterine septum versus women without septum (controls); (ii) Women with treated uterine septum versus women with untreated septum (controls); (iii) Women before and after septum removal. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for the outcome measures. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Subgroup analysis was performed according to the depth of the septum. Sources of heterogeneity were explored by meta-regression analysis according to specific features: assisted reproductive technology/spontaneous conception, study design and quality of papers included Results: data from 38 studies were extracted. (i) septum versus no septum: a lower PR and LBR were associated with septate uterus vs. controls (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.27−0.76; p < 0.0001; and OR 0.21, 95% CI 0.12−0.39; p < 0.0001); a higher proportion of SA and PL was associated with septate uterus vs. controls (OR 4.29, 95% CI 2.90−6.36; p < 0.0001; OR 2.56, 95% CI 1.52−4.31; p = 0.0004). (ii) treated versus untreated septum: PR and PL were not different in removed vs. unremoved septum(OR 1.10, 95% CI 0.49−2.49; p = 0.82 and OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.35−1.86; p = 0.62); a lower proportion of SA was associated with removed vs. unremoved septum (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.21−1.04; p = 0.001); (iii) before-after septum removal: the proportion of LBR was higher after the removal of septum (OR 49.58, 95% CI 29.93−82.13; p < 0.0001) and the proportion of SA and PL was lower after the removal of the septum (OR 0.02, 95% CI 0.02−0.04; p < 0.000 and OR 0.05, 95% CI 0.03−0.08; p < 0.0001) Conclusions: the results show the detrimental effect of the uterine septum on PR, LBR, SA and PL. Its treatment reduces the rate of SA.

Abstract
Psoriasis, an immune-mediated inflammatory disease, is associated with poor pregnancy outcomes. Emerging evidence indicates that these defects are likely attributed to compromised oocyte competence. Nevertheless, little is known about the underlying associated mechanisms between psoriasis and poor oocyte quality. In this study, we construct an imiquimod-induced chronic psoriasis-like mouse model to review the effects of psoriasis on oocyte quality. We discover that oocytes from psoriasis-like mice display spindle/chromosome disorganization, kinetochore-microtubule mis-attachment, and aneuploidy. Importantly, our results show that melatonin supplement in vitro and in vivo not only increases the rate of matured oocytes but also significantly attenuates oxidative stress and meiotic defects by restoring mitochondrial function in oocytes from psoriasis-like mice. Altogether, our data uncover the adverse effects of psoriasis symptoms on oocytes, and melatonin supplement ameliorates oxidative stress and meiotic defects of oocytes from psoriatic mice.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Gestational diabetes (GD) is one of the most common and important complications of pregnancy. Identifying pregnant women who are at high risk of GD is crucial for implementing early prevention and intervention. OBJECTIVE To examine whether a history of spontaneous abortion (SAB) or induced abortion is associated with increased risk of GD in subsequent pregnancies. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This retrospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China. Pregnant women who received routine antenatal care between January 2014 and December 2019 were included. Data analysis was performed from December 2020 to June 2021. EXPOSURES Maternal history of abortion, including SAB and induced abortion, were extracted from medical records. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES GD was diagnosed with a 75-g diagnostic oral glucose tolerance test. A multivariable-adjusted log-binomial analysis was used to estimate relative risks (RRs) and 95% CIs of GD associated with history of abortion. RESULTS Among the 102 259 included pregnant women (mean [SD] age, 29.8 [3.8] years), 14 579 (14.3%) experienced only SAB, 17 935 (17.5%) experienced only induced abortion, and 4017 (3.9%) experienced both SAB and induced abortion. A total of 12 153 GD cases were identified, and the prevalence of GD was 11.9% (12 153 of 102 259 women) in this cohort. Pregnant women who experienced only SAB (RR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.18-1.31) or both SAB and induced abortion (RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.05-1.27) were at higher risk of developing GD. The association of SAB history with GD occurred in a number-dependent manner. Compared with pregnant women with no history of abortion, the RR for GD increased by 18% (RR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.11-1.26) for pregnant women with 1 SAB, by 41% (RR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.27-1.57) for those with 2 SABs, and by 43% (RR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.22-1.67) for those more than 2 SABs. However, no association between history of induced abortion and GD was observed. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This study found that a history of SAB was associated with increased risk of GD in subsequent pregnancies. Further research is needed to clarify this association and explore the potential biological mechanisms underlying the association.

Abstract
Background/Aim. Since the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of thrombophilia in pregnancy has still not been clarified, the aim of the study was to assess the redox status of pregnant women with thrombophilia. Methods. The study involved 120 pregnant women divided into two groups: pregnant women with thrombophilia (n = 60) and women with normal pregnancy (n = 60). Blood samples for biochemical analysis were collected at the end of the first, second, and third trimester of pregnancy. Concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitrites (NO2-), and the index of lipid peroxidation measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were measured in plasma. Levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured in erythrocytes. Results. In women with thrombophilia, NO2- values were increased in the first and third trimester compared to healthy pregnant women (p < 0.05). The higher levels of TBARS and H2O2 were noticed in women with thrombophilia in the first trimester compared to healthy pregnant women (p < 0.05). The values of SOD and CAT were lower in women with thrombophilia in the third and GSH in the first trimester compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion. Our results suggest an increased generation of prooxidants in thrombophilia at the beginning of gestation, which declines as gestation progresses and reaches similar values as in normal pregnancy at the end of pregnancy. Generally viewed, pregnant women with thrombophilia was associated with impaired antioxidant capacity ? activities of SOD and CAT were lower in the third and GSH in the first trimester compared to their values in healthy pregnant women.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS), a clinical predicament characterized by a shift in homeostatic imbalance among prooxidant molecules embracing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), along with antioxidant defenses, has been established to play an indispensable part in the pathophysiology of subfertility in both human males and females. ROS are highly reactive oxidizing by-products generated during critical oxygen-consuming processes or aerobic metabolism. A healthy body system has its own course of action to maintain the equilibrium between prooxidants and antioxidants with an efficient defense system to fight against ROS. But when ROS production crosses its threshold, the disturbance in homeostatic balance results in OS. Besides their noxious effects, literature studies have depicted that controlled and adequate ROS concentrations exert physiologic functions, especially that gynecologic OS is an important mediator of conception in females. Yet the impact of ROS on oocytes and reproductive functions still needs a strong attestation for further analysis because the disruption in prooxidant and antioxidant balance leads to abrupt ROS generation initiating multiple reproductive diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and unexplained infertility in addition to other impediments in pregnancy such as recurrent pregnancy loss, spontaneous abortion, and preeclampsia. The current article elucidates the skeptical state of affairs created by ROS that influences female fertility.

Abstract
Cyantraniliprole is a synthetic insecticide used to control pests of up to 23 different types of crops. It is able to modulate ryanodine-like calcium channels, which are widely found in the organism of insects and mammals. The objective of this research was to verify the possible reproductive effects of adult female Wistar rats exposure to cyantraniliprole. Animals (67 days old) were exposed to the chemical at doses of 10 or 150 mg/kg/day, orally, for 28 consecutive days (control animals received only the vehicle). Vaginal secretions were collected during the exposure period to assess the regularity of the estrous cycle; the liver, kidneys, pituitary gland, adrenal gland, uterus, and ovaries were collected and weighed; reproductive organs were assessed for histopathological evaluation and for biochemical markers of oxidative stress and progesterone plasma level was measured. Both doses caused negative changes in the morphology and redox system of the uterus and ovaries. Animals exposed to 10 mg/kg also exhibited higher level of plasma progesterone, elevated levels of lipid peroxidation in reproductive organs, increased superoxide dismutase activity in the uterus and glutathione peroxidase activity on the ovary, while the 150 mg/kg group exhibited an increment in estrous cycle length and diminished uterine glandular epithelium. Based on these results, we conclude that cyantraniliprole may have acted as an endocrine disruptor, and its effects are mediated by oxidative stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association between the urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (U8-OHdG) levels and the incidence of small-for-gestational age (SGA) infants and to assess the utility of U8-OHdG as a biomarker to predict the incidence of SGA infants. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING The Japan Environment and Children's Study. PARTICIPANTS Data of participants enrolled in the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort study, between 2011 and 2014 were analysed; 104 062 fetal records were analysed. Data of women with singleton pregnancies ≥22 weeks of gestation were analysed. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES U8-OHdG levels were assessed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Participants were categorised into the following three groups according to the quartile of the distribution of U8-OHdG: low U8-OHdG (<1.95 ng/mgCre), moderate U8-OHdG (the combined second and third quartiles; 1.95-2.95 ng/mgCre) and high U8-OHdG (>2.95 ng/mgCre) groups. Additionally, participants in the 90th percentile for U8-OHdG levels were analysed. Odds ratios (ORs) for SGA infants (<-1.5 and <-2.0 SD) were calculated using a logistic regression model while adjusting for confounding factors; the moderate U8-OHdG group was used as a reference. The cut-off value of U8-OHdG to predict the incidence of SGA infants was calculated using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS Data of 80 212 participants were analysed. The adjusted ORs for SGA infants (<-1.5 and<-2.0 SD) in the high U8-OHdG group were 1.16 (95% CI 1.07 to 1.25) and 1.22 (95% CI 1.07 to 1.38). The cut-off value of U8-OHdG (3.26 ng/mgCre) showed a poor ability to predict SGA infants (sensitivity, 21.9%; specificity, 83.6%; area under the ROC curve, 0.530). CONCLUSIONS Elevated U8-OHdG levels were associated with an increased incidence of SGA infants. However, this parameter would not be a useful screening tool for predicting SGA infants owing to its low sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
Objectiveβ-thalassemia is a genetic disorder characterized by reduction or absence of β-globin chain with mutations in both copies (β-thalassemia major) or in one copy (β-thalassemia minor). Pregnancies in β- thalassemic carrier women are considered symptom free but have risk of inheriting β-thalassemic fetuses. Current study was designed to compare oxidative stress and antioxidants status in maternal serum from β-thalassemic minor mothers having β-thalassemic major and normal fetuses. Method: We investigated paraoxonase (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE) activities along with malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in maternal serum of β-thalassemic carrier women. Results: PON1 and ARE activities were found to be significantly decreased, whereas the concentration of MDA and ROS were significantly increased in β-thalassemic minor mothers with β-thalassemic major fetuses. Conclusion: The study concludes that redox imbalance in β-thalassemic trait mothers carrying thalassemic fetuses is higher than in mothers carrying normal fetuses.

Abstract
Dairy farming in tropical climates is challenging as heat stress can impair reproduction in cows. Previous studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of beta-carotene supplementation on bovine reproductive performance. This study was performed in Thailand, where the temperature-humidity index (THI) during the experimental periods was measured to range from 78.4 to 86.1. Lactating Holstein cows classified as repeat breeders (previous artificial insemination [AI] failures) were randomly assigned into two treatments, control treatment (T1; received placebo, n = 200) and test treatment (T2; received 400 mg/h/day of beta-carotene, n = 200). All cows were subjected to a protocol for synchronization of ovulation and timed artificial insemination (TAI). The day of the 1st ovulation synchronized protocol was defined as day 0, and the total experimental period was 160 days. Daily placebo or beta-carotene supplements were given orally on day 0 and each subsequent day of the experiment. Diagnosis of pregnancy was performed using ultrasound on day 30 after insemination. Non-pregnant cows were subjected to further ovulation synchronizations (maximum of four) and TAI over a period of 160 days. Milk samples were collected every ten days throughout the experiment. The samples were analyzed for beta-carotene concentration, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities. The pregnancies per AI of the cows in T2 were significantly greater than that of T1 from the 2nd to 4th TAI. During the entire experimental period, the pregnancies in T2 were significantly greater than that of T1. Cox's proportional hazards regression model data indicated a 44% greater probability of pregnancy for cows receiving beta-carotene. The concentrations of milk beta-carotene in T2 were significantly greater than T1 from the 2nd to 4th TAI. Significantly greater SOD and GPx activities were observed in T2 than T1, suggesting a reduction of oxidative stress in cows treated with beta-carotene. Dietary supplementation with beta-carotene thus improves the reproductive performance of repeat breeders exposed to heat stress, possibly by reducing oxidative stress.

Abstract
AIMS Contamination with heavy metal (HM) is a severe environmental issue. Therefore, there is a pressing need to create environmentally safe and cost-effective HM bioremediation approaches. METHODS AND RESULTS Three iron-tolerant fungal strains were isolated from sewage-irrigated soils, molecularly identified and deposited in the GenBank as Aspergillus flavus MT639638, A. terreus MT605370 and Fusarium oxysporum MT605399. The fungal growth, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), tolerance index (TI), removal efficiency, bioaccumulation, and enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were determined. Based on MIC values, A. flavus MT639638 was the most resistant strain. F. oxysporum displayed the highest percent removal efficiency (93.65% at 4000 mg L-1 ) followed by A. flavus (92.92%, at 11,000 mg L-1 ), and A. terreus (91.18% at 3000 mg L-1 ). F. oxysporum was selected based on its highly sensitivity for further characterization of its response to Fe(II) stress using TEM, SEM and EDX, in addition to HPLC analysis of organic acids. These analyses demonstrated the localization of bioaccumulated Fe(II) and ultrastructural changes induced by iron and indicated induction release of organic acids. CONCLUSIONS Our fungal strains showed an effective capacity for removal of Fe(II) via bioaccumulation and biosorption mechanisms which were supported by instrumental analyses. The iron tolerance potentiality was mediated by induction of selected antioxidative enzymes and biomolecules. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study depicts a potential utilization of the three fungal strains for the bioremediation of iron-contaminated soils.

Abstract
Uterine natural killer (uNK) cells constitute a unique uterine leucocyte subpopulation facilitating implantation and maintaining pregnancy. Herein, we critically analyze current evidence regarding the role of uNK cells in the events entailed in recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and recurrent miscarriages (RM). Data suggest an association between RIF and RM with abnormally elevated uNK cells’ numbers, as well as with a defective biological activity leading to cytotoxicity. However, other studies do not concur on these associations. Robust data suggesting a definitive causative relationship between uNK cells and RIF and RM is missing. Considering the possibility of uNK cells involvement on RIF and RM pathophysiology, possible treatments including glucocorticoids, intralipids, and intravenous immunoglobulin administration have been proposed towards addressing uNK related RIF and RM. When considering clinical routine practice, this study indicated that solid evidence is required to report on efficiency and safety of these treatments as there are recommendations that clearly advise against their employment. In conclusion, defining a causative relationship between uNK and RIF–RM pathologies certainly merits investigation. Future studies should serve as a prerequisite prior to proposing the use of uNK as a biomarker or prior to targeting uNK cells for therapeutic purposes addressing RIF and RM.
