Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between preinjury or early personal resources and long-term psychosocial outcomes following moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and examine evidence for the stability of personal resources over time. METHODS The review protocol was registered with the International Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO, Registration No. CRD4202341056). A search of PsycINFO, Cumulative Index to Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted from inception to February 23, 2023, for longitudinal studies involving adults with moderate-to-severe TBI that examined: (1) the relationship between preinjury or early personal resources (measured ≤6 months postinjury) and later psychosocial outcomes or (2) stability of personal resources over time with a minimum reassessment interval of 3 months. Two reviewers independently assessed eligibility and rated methodological quality of studies using a checklist informed by Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology. RESULTS A narrative synthesis was conducted on 14 eligible articles summarizing 12 studies (N = 826). Nine studies examined the impact of preinjury or early personal resources on long-term psychosocial outcomes, most typically at 12 months postdischarge. Out of 9 studies 7 indicated that self-reported preinjury or early personal resources, including productive coping, higher self-esteem and resilience, and lower neuroticism, were associated with better psychosocial outcomes. Evidence from 7 studies examining the stability of personal resources over time was generally mixed, with personality changes (eg, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and extraversion) more evident from informant ratings than self-ratings. CONCLUSION Preinjury or early personal resources may influence later psychosocial outcomes after TBI. Further research is needed to investigate the stability of personal resources and factors mediating or moderating change across the adjustment trajectory.

Abstract
PURPOSE After traumatic brain injury (TBI), individuals may face challenges in their social participation, self-awareness, and self-identity. However, positive life changes can also be experienced (i.e., post-traumatic growth). This study aimed to characterize the social participation, self-awareness, and self-identity of individuals with TBI displaying post-traumatic growth. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen participants (male = 10, mean age = 49.7 years) with moderate to severe TBI (average years post-injury = 15.2) were included in this mixed-methods study. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess social participation, self-awareness, and self-identity. Qualitative data, collected using semi-structured interviews, were used to categorize participants into two groups: higher (n = 8) and lower (n = 7) post-traumatic growth. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize participants in each group in terms of their social participation, self-awareness, and self-identity. RESULTS Participants with higher post-traumatic growth had increased social participation, higher self-awareness, and fewer negative discrepancies between their pre- and post-injury self-identities, compared to participants with lower post-traumatic growth. CONCLUSION This study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of post-traumatic growth through the use of both qualitative and quantitative data. These findings can inform future research and development of programs to promote post-traumatic growth post-TBI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Acquired brain injury (ABI) extends beyond the immediate aftermath, and understanding individual experience of ABI is paramount to providing effective support mechanisms. This study examined how people with ABI used mask-making to engage in self-expression. METHOD Publicly available data from the Unmasking Brain Injury Project website, an advocacy group for people with ABI, were analyzed. A qualitative approach with hybrid inductive/deductive analysis was used to explore how people with ABI use art to express their emotional experiences of ABI. RESULTS In total, 1,049 masks had narratives describing the visual components and meaning in the associated masks. Three major themes emerged: the multiplicity of experiences after ABI, including positive, negative, and mixed outcomes; the expression of emotional pain and living with loss through art; and the importance of positivity, purpose, and faith in the experience with ABI. Multiplicity was the central expression represented in the masks. The most commonly represented emotional experiences were: emotional pain and living with loss and positivity, purpose, and faith. The masks incorporated literal depictions of the ABI, visual metaphors, and intentional use of colors and shapes for self-expression. CONCLUSIONS These results support previous findings that emotional experiences after ABI are complex and often interlaced with several emotions. The most prominent feelings include emotional pain and living with loss, and positivity, purpose, and faith. Mask-making may be a particularly appropriate method for people with ABI to process or express emotional experiences, as well as to provide clinicians with visual records of sense of self, coping, or progress.

Abstract
PURPOSE This exploratory study aimed to examine brain injury videos on YouTube to determine who posted about brain injury, content categories of videos, and how brain injury was represented. METHODS A mixed methods approach was used. Brain injury videos on YouTube were collected in November 2022 and analysed quantitatively and qualitatively using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Visual data analysis was used to generate visual descriptions of a representative sample of the videos, and these were thematically analysed alongside the video transcripts. RESULTS The sample of 100 YouTube videos consisted of educational, lived experience, and promotional videos. Medical organisations and hospitals were the predominant source of videos. An overarching theme of "Video tells a story" was generated from eighteen visual descriptions and transcripts which contained three major themes: (a) we choose how the story is told, (b) recovery is a process, and (c) it changed my life. CONCLUSION YouTube may have a storytelling role for both people with a brain injury wishing to share their story and for health professionals wishing to communicate information about brain injury. This research may have clinical implications for the integration of YouTube in brain injury rehabilitation and the use of YouTube for health communication.

Abstract
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES 1) Characterize the delivery of programs that support acceptance and resiliency for people with brain injury in the healthcare sector; 2) Understand the barriers and facilitators in implementation of programs to support self-acceptance and resiliency for people with brain injury. DESIGN Participatory focus groups were used to explore experiences of conducting brain injury programs and knowledge of the barriers and facilitators to their implementation. Focus group data were analyzed with manifest content analysis to minimally deviate from broad and structural information provided by participants. SETTING Four focus group sessions were conducted online through a video calling platform. PARTICIPANTS 22 individuals from community associations conducting programs for people with brain injury. Participants were recruited from a public brain injury organization database. RESULTS Systemic challenges such as access to and allocation of funding require navigation support. Resource consistency and availability, including stable program leaders and a welcoming atmosphere, are important for program implementation and sustainability. Shared experiences promote connection with the community and personal development. CONCLUSIONS This study informs individual- and community-level approaches to promote meaningful life after brain injury. Findings highlight existing resources and support future programming for people with brain injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its consequences can significantly impact an individual's identity and self-esteem. However, there is limited research with respect to the trajectory of change over time and factors that may influence self-esteem levels. This study aimed to investigate: (1) changes in self-esteem over 3 years post-TBI; and (2) factors associated with self-esteem post-TBI. SETTING Outpatient. PARTICIPANTS, DESIGN, AND MEASURES Self-esteem was measured in 1267 individuals with predominantly moderate to severe TBI (mean age = 36.38 years, mean days in posttraumatic amnesia = 26.16 days) using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale at 1-, 2, and 3 years post-injury. Participants also completed the Structured Outcome Questionnaire and the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOS-E). RESULTS Linear mixed modeling indicated that self-esteem significantly declined between 1 and 2 years but remained stable between 2 and 3 years post-injury. Higher self-esteem was significantly associated with better functional outcomes (as measured by the GOS-E), more years of education, more participation in leisure activities, and lower reported anxiety and depression levels. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that functional impacts of injury and emotional functioning influence self-esteem increasingly between 1 and 2 years post-injury. This highlights the importance of timely psychological interventions to maximize self-esteem in individuals with TBI post-injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive-communication disorders (CCDs) are common in the traumatic brain injury (TBI) population. Despite this, there has been limited research that explores the long-term impacts of reduced cognitive-communication functioning on daily life for this population. AIMS To identify the long-term impacts of cognitive-communication impairment as reported by adults with TBI and their significant others. METHODS & PROCEDURES A qualitative descriptive approach grounded in phenomenology was used. Semi-structured, one-on-one interviews were conducted with adults with CCDs following TBI (n = 16) and their significant others (n = 12) to explore their lived experiences. OUTCOMES & RESULTS Reflexive thematic analysis revealed an overarching theme of 'The pervasive and unyielding impacts of cognitive-communication changes on daily life following TBI'. Within this overarching theme, three subthemes were identified: (1) self-awareness of communication changes; (2) fatigue; and (3) self-identity and life roles. CONCLUSION & IMPLICATIONS The findings from this study highlight the long-term negative impacts of reduced cognitive-communication functioning on daily life. Health professionals supporting this population should consider ways to reduce the significant impact CCDs have on the lives of adults following TBI and their significant others. In addition, the findings highlight the importance of long-term rehabilitation services following TBI, with further research needed that explores how these services can be optimised. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS What is already known on this subject Cognitive-communication disorders (CCDs) affect the majority of adults who experience moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and encompass any component of communication that is affected by cognition. The hallmark characteristic of CCDs are breakdowns that affect social communication skills as well as cognitive-linguistic deficits. Combined, these can have dramatic implications for a person's quality of life, their level of independence, employment opportunities and social participation. There has been limited research to date that explores the long-term impacts of CCDs on the lives of adults following TBI. Further research that explores these impacts is needed to improve the support services and rehabilitation models of care available for this population. What this study adds The overarching theme was 'The pervasive and unyielding impacts of communication changes on daily life following TBI' with subthemes including changed communication, self-awareness of communication changes, fatigue and self-identity and life roles. The findings from this study highlight the long-term negative impacts of reduced cognitive-communication functioning on everyday functioning and quality of life as well as the importance of long-term rehabilitation services following TBI. What are the clinical implications of this work? Speech-language therapists and other health professionals working with this clinical population should consider how to address the significant and long-lasting impacts of CCDs. Due to the complex nature of the barriers experienced by this clinical population, an interdisciplinary targeted approach is advised wherever possible when providing rehabilitation services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Occupational injuries and diseases are life events that significantly impact an individuals' identity. In this study, we examined the trajectories of self-esteem among victims of occupational injury and disease and their relation to health. METHODS The Panel Study of Workers' Compensation Insurance conducted annual follow-ups on workers who had experienced occupational injury or disease. A total of 2,000 participants, who had completed medical care, were followed from 2013 to 2017. Growth mixture modeling was utilized to identify latent classes in the self-esteem trajectory. Additionally, logistic regressions were conducted to explore the association between trajectory membership, baseline predictors, and outcomes. RESULTS Three distinct trajectory classes were identified. Total 65.8% of the samples (n = 1,316) followed an increasing self-esteem trajectory, while 31.1% (n = 623) exhibited a constant trajectory, and 3.1% (n = 61) showed a decreasing trajectory. Individuals with an increasing trajectory were more likely to have a higher educational attainment (odds ratio [OR], 1.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-2.88), an absence of a moderate-to-severe disability rating (OR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.25-0.96), no difficulty in daily living activities (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.75-0.88), and were economically active (re-employed: OR, 2.46; 95% CI, 1.52-3.98; returned to original work: OR, 4.46; 9% CI, 2.65-7.50). Those with a decreasing self-esteem trajectory exhibited an increased risk of poor subjective health (OR, 1.89; 95% CI, 0.85-4.85 in 2013 to OR, 3.17; 95% CI, 1.04-13.81 in 2017), whereas individuals with an increasing trajectory showed a decreased risk (OR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.43-0.68 in 2013 to OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.33-0.57 in 2017). CONCLUSION Our findings emphasize the diversity of psychological responses to occupational injury or disease. Policymakers should implement interventions to enhance the self-esteem of victims.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and dementia is controversial, and of growing importance considering the ageing demography of TBI. OBJECTIVE To review the scope and quality of the existing literature investigating the relationship between TBI and dementia. METHODS We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. Studies that compared TBI exposure and dementia risk were included. Studies were formally assessed for quality with a validated quality-assessment tool. RESULTS 44 studies were included in the final analysis. 75% (n = 33) were cohort studies and data collection was predominantly retrospective (n = 30, 66.7%). 25 studies (56.8%) found a positive relationship between TBI and dementia. Clearly defined and valid measures of assessing TBI history were lacking (case-control studies-88.9%, cohort studies-52.9%). Most studies failed to justify a sample size (case-control studies-77.8%, cohort studies-91.2%), blind assessors to exposure (case-control-66.7%) or blind assessors to exposure status (cohort-3.00%). Studies that identified a relationship between TBI and dementia had a longer median follow-up time (120 months vs 48 months, p = 0.022) and were more likely to use validated TBI definitions (p = 0.01). Studies which clearly defined TBI exposure (p = 0.013) and accounted for TBI severity (p = 0.036) were also more likely to identify an association between TBI and dementia. There was no consensus method by which studies diagnosed dementia and neuropathological confirmation was only available in 15.5% of studies. CONCLUSIONS Our review suggests a relationship between TBI and dementia, but we are unable to predict the risk of dementia for an individual following TBI. Our conclusions are limited by heterogeneity in both exposure and outcome reporting and by poor study quality. Future studies should; (a) use validated methods to define TBI, accounting for TBI severity; (b) follow consensus agreement on criteria for dementia diagnosis; and (c) undertake follow-up that is both longitudinal, to determine if there is a progressive neurodegenerative change or static post-traumatic deficit, and of sufficient duration.

Abstract
This is an observational exploratory study assessing self-concept and its association with depression, anxiety, satisfaction with life, and quality of life 6 months after experiencing a traumatic brain injury. Participants were 33 patients who suffered a traumatic brain injury 6 months before the assessment. The measures used in this study were the Repertory Grid Technique, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Satisfaction With Life Scale, and the Quality of Life after Brain Injury. We calculated Euclidean distances to assess differences in pre-and post-injury self-perception, as well as the proportion of opposed pole construct rating and polarization to understand how they are associated with the scores of the other offered measures. We found that the distance between the present and ideal self, as well as the distance between the present self and the self before the lesion showed moderate positive correlations with depression, and negative correlations with satisfaction with life and quality of life. Also, for the present and self before the lesion, the proportion of opposed pole ratings was correlated with depression symptoms, quality, and satisfaction with life, while for the present self and the ideal self this proportion was correlated with all the measures. The proportion of polarization of the present self and the total polarization was negatively correlated with symptom measures. The repertory grid might facilitate a greater understanding of self-concept after traumatic brain injury. This information could be used to guide treatments that address the emotions related to distances observed in the perception of the self.

Abstract
Individuals with a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) experience substantial changes in their life. This constructivist grounded theory study aimed to develop an explanatory model that explores the impact of changes in social participation and self-identity after sustaining a TBI. Sixteen participants with moderate to severe TBI (mean age = 49.8, 69% male) were recruited, and were on average 16.4 years post-injury (SD = 10.4). Data from semi-structured interviews were analysed thematically. An overarching theme of "living in a reshaped reality" was identified, which depicted how changes in social participation and self-identity influenced ongoing experiences with TBI. Three main themes were generated: (1) "there's nothing that's the same" highlighted the daily challenges individuals faced post-injury, (2) "rebuilding and restarting" described how individuals with TBI navigated through their unfamiliar reality, and (3) "embrace it and run with it" explored participants' reactions towards life with a TBI. An explanatory model was developed, consisting of the overarching theme ("living in a reshaped reality") with the three integrated themes. Future research and clinical practices can build on this understanding to develop programmes to help individuals address their needs in post-injury life.

Abstract
A complexity of biological, psychological, environmental and systemic factors influences a child's adaption after acquired brain injury (ABI), all of which transform as the child matures. Multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams are challenged by balancing family system needs and the child's needs, whilst promoting the child's functional skills in difficult or unappealing tasks. This paper presents the conceptual basis for a model for use in childhood ABI neurorehabilitation to address these challenges. A non-systematic narrative review of literature pertinent to integrated neurorehabilitation of pediatric ABI was conducted. Contemporary models of adult and pediatric psychosocial adaptation involving identity following ABI were reviewed. Key findings were then synthesized with models of pediatric resilience and self-concept development. The resulting model describes a cyclical adaptation process whereby the child learns experientially about their self and their world after ABI. Processes of identity development play a central role - particularly emotive processes of self-evaluation - by influencing the child's motivation for participation, tolerance for challenge, self-regulation and emerging self-awareness. The model directs clinicians to use the psychosocial processes of identity development to enhance the child's willingness and capacity to engage in the daily challenges of rehabilitation. Further systematic development and evaluation of the model is needed.

Abstract
This study explored the process of identity adjustment following adolescent brain injury, within the systemic context of the parent-adolescent dyad. Six young people with an ABI (mean age 16.5 years, range 15-18 years; TBI: n = 3) were individually interviewed, and six respective mothers (mean age 45 years, range 37-50 years). A novel relational qualitative grounded theory approach was used, with analyses of dyads linked in an attempt to capture the shared process of adaptation post-injury for young people and their parents. Shared themes emerged for adolescents and mothers regarding "continuity and change" and "acknowledging or rejecting" experiences of change post injury. Adolescents experienced change as an, at times, distressing sense of being "not normal". While mothers turned towards their child, working hard to try to "fix everything", adolescents sought continuity of identity in the context of peer relationships, withdrawing socially to avoid feeling abnormal, reframing or finding new relationships. Some mothers sought to fill social losses through family or disability-specific activity. This study provides a relational understanding of the process of identity adjustment post adolescent BI. Future research and clinical practice should recognize the significant work of mothers, and significance of social relationships to adolescents' emerging post-injury identity.

Abstract
ABSTRACTAdolescence is a critical period for developing a sense of identity, an iterative process that relies on the development of skills such as self-reflection and self-appraisal. Outcomes of identity development include personal ethics, knowledge of one's strengths and challenges, and, ultimately, independence. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects these outcomes in adults, when identity has been established and may need to be redefined; but what happens when an injury occurs while identity is being formed? To answer this question, we used mapping review methodology to explore TBI effects on adolescent identity formation, mapping the evidence onto a biopsychosocial framework for rehabilitation. We reviewed studies on identity in adolescents with mild to severe TBI ages 13-18 years, published from inception to 2021, with a focus on outpatient rehabilitation settings. Key findings of the mapping review noted adolescents post-TBI are likely to: (1) question their identity considering dissonance between the current self and their pre-injury self; and (2) seek to establish new, adaptive meanings and identities. All studies drew conclusions regarding identity and participation of adolescents post-TBI. Results provided insight into the importance of considering individualized rehabilitation interventions for adolescents, given their unique developmental path towards identity formation.

Abstract
Self-concept or sense of self is often altered in the context of neurological illness. Yet, these core aspects of subjective experience are poorly understood for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). This systematic review aimed to synthesize the findings of quantitative and qualitative studies investigating self-concept in MS. PsycINFO, MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science were last systematically searched in May 2021, with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualiatative Research used to appraise the quality of the eligible articles. Articles were included if they measured or explored self-concept in MS populations, were published in English and peer-reviewed. A total of 30 studies (11 quantitative, 19 qualitative) were identified. Quantitative studies were synthesized using a narrative approach, with results suggesting that MS is associated with some degree of self-concept change. Qualitative studies were synthesized using thematic synthesis, with results illustrating a complex process of self-concept change that is catalyzed by MS-related events and characterized by varying degrees of resistance to, or acknowledgement of, such changes. Future prospective longitudinal studies are needed to characterize the nature of self-concept change in MS using validated tools that measure relevant aspects of self-concept for the MS population.

Abstract
Acquired brain injury (ABI) is often associated with personality changes. Pre- as well as post-injury personality traits are related to rehabilitation outcomes. However, it largely remains unclear whether post-injury personality shows any associations with rehabilitation outcomes over and above pre-injury personality. Using a case-control design, this study investigated (1) personality changes after ABI from patients' and significant others' perspective, and (2) relations of pre- and post-ABI personality traits to rehabilitation outcomes in the short- and long-term. 40 patients with ABI (85% stroke, 15% traumatic brain injury), 46 healthy controls and their significant others participated. Personality was assessed with NEO-FFI, rehabilitation outcomes (activities, participation, depression) were measured at two and ten months after ABI. Patient-ratings indicated decreases in extraversion and a trend towards reduced conscientiousness. Significant others reported increases in patients' neuroticism. Pre- as well as post-injury personality traits were associated with depression and activities at both short- and long-term timepoints after ABI. The association was strongest for long-term depressive symptoms where personality trait variables accounted for 49% of variance (Radjusted2). Our results confirm that ABI patients and significant others perceive personality changes, albeit in different dimensions. Pre- and post-ABI personality traits showed associations with rehabilitation outcomes, especially with emotional adjustment after the injury.

Abstract
Neuroethical questions raised by recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of consciousness are rapidly expanding, increasingly relevant and yet underexplored. The aim of this thematic review is to provide a clinically applicable framework for understanding the current taxonomy of disorders of consciousness and to propose an approach to identifying and critically evaluating actionable neuroethical issues that are frequently encountered in research and clinical care for this vulnerable population. Increased awareness of these issues and clarity about opportunities for optimizing ethically responsible care in this domain are especially timely given recent surges in critically ill patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness associated with coronavirus disease 2019 around the world. We begin with an overview of the field of neuroethics: what it is, its history and evolution in the context of biomedical ethics at large. We then explore nomenclature used in disorders of consciousness, covering categories proposed by the American Academy of Neurology, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research, including definitions of terms such as coma, the vegetative state, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, minimally conscious state, covert consciousness and the confusional state. We discuss why these definitions matter, and why there has been such evolution in this nosology over the years, from Jennett and Plum in 1972 to the Multi-Society Task Force in 1994, the Aspen Working Group in 2002 and the 2018 American and 2020 European Disorders of Consciousness guidelines. We then move to a discussion of clinical aspects of disorders of consciousness, the natural history of recovery and ethical issues that arise within the context of caring for people with disorders of consciousness. We conclude with a discussion of key challenges associated with assessing residual consciousness in disorders of consciousness, potential solutions and future directions, including integration of crucial disability rights perspectives.

Background:
This research adds to scarce literature regarding adolescent experiences of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Retrospective accounts of young adults who had sustained a TBI in adolescence were analysed to explore the perceived impact this had on their lives and forming identities during this important developmental stage.
Methods:
Thirteen adults (aged 20–25 years; mean 23 years) who sustained a mild or moderate TBI during adolescence (i.e. aged 13–17 years at injury), approximately 7.7 years (range = 6.7–8.0 years) prior, participated in the research. Semi-structured individual interviews, analysed using thematic analysis, explored participants’ experiences following their TBIs.
Results:
Thematic analysis of interview data produced two categories of themes: (1) Impacts on Important Areas of Life, which included: schoolwork suffered, career opportunities became limited, struggling with work and missing out socially; and (2) Impacts on Identity: with themes including feeling ‘stupid’, feeling self-conscious, loss of social identity and being dependent.
Conclusions:
TBI sustained during adolescence can have broad impacts on important areas of life and on developing identity.

Abstract
Background: The loss of female organs leads to profound changes in one's perception of oneself. There is limited information about the impact of hysterectomy on women's self-concept and culture. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim to deepen our understanding of the self-concept of Iranian women after hysterectomy. Materials and Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using directed content analysis approach. The participants included 30 women with a history of hysterectomy who were selected through purposive sampling method. Data were collected from August 2018 to November 2019 using in-depth and semi-structured interviews based on the self-concept mode of the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) in Mashhad, Iran. Data analysis was performed using the deductive approach of Elo and Kyngäs in MAXQDA software. Results: As a result of the analysis of the interviews, the main category of “incoherent cognition of self-concept” emerged, which included the two generic categories of “heterogeneous feelings toward and imaginations of the body” and “changed self-perception”, and five subcategories. Conclusions: Women's self-concept changed after hysterectomy in both its physical and psychological aspects. Therefore, counseling before and after hysterectomy is recommended to improve women's self-concept after hysterectomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Following mild-moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI), an individual experiences a range of emotional changes. It is often difficult for the patient to reconcile with their post-injury persona, and the memory of pre-injury personhood is particularly painful. Insight into one's cognitive deficits subsequent to injury can lead to an existential crisis and a sense of loss, including loss of self. OBJECTIVE Restoration of cognitive functions and reconciliation with loss of pre-traumatic personhood employing a holistic method of neuropsychological rehabilitation in a patient suffering from TBI. METHODS Ms. K.S, a 25-year-old female, presented with emotional disturbances following TBI. She reported both retrograde and anterograde amnesia. A multidimensional holistic rehabilitation was planned. Treatment addressed cognitive deficits through the basic functions approach. Cognitive behavioural methods for emotional regulation like diary writing helped reduce irritability and anger outbursts. Use of social media created new modes of memory activation and interactions. Compensatory strategies were used to recover lost skills, music-based attention training helped foster an individualised approach to the sense of one's body and self. RESULTS As a result of these differing strategies, changes were reflected in neuro-psychological tests, depression score and the patient's self-evaluation. This helped generate a coherent self-narrative. CONCLUSION Treatment challenges in such cases are increased due to patient's actual deficits caused by neuronal/biochemical changes. Innovative and multi-pronged rehabilitation strategies which involve everyday activities provided an answer to some of these problems. This method of rehabilitation may provide an optimistic context for future research.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the content and psychometric properties of comprehensive nursing assessment tools developed based on The Eleven Functional Health Patterns Assessment Framework. METHODS An integrative literature review following Whittemore and Knafl's method and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Searches on PubMed, Cinahl, and Virtual Health Library were conducted between September and December 2018. FINDINGS Six out of 146 records were included for review. Four articles were methodological studies and two were descriptive reports of the development of the tools. Tools were heterogenous in terms of their purpose, development, characteristics, and testing. Only one study provided data about construct validity. However, there were commonalities regarding the data that should be assessed in each tool. CONCLUSIONS Few comprehensive nursing assessment tools using The Eleven Functional Health Patterns Assessment Framework are available. Purpose, process of development, characteristics, and testing varied among the tools, and most lack robust psychometric testing. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE This review provided a synthesis of the literature regarding the use of a discipline-specific framework to guide comprehensive nursing assessment. The differences across the tools and the lack of psychometric testing compromise the visibility of nursing and make it difficult to emphasize the contribution of nursing knowledge to patient care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the experience of living with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) in individuals who report higher or lower posttraumatic growth (PTG). METHOD A multi-method design was employed. Participant scores on the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) were used to identify groups for qualitative comparative analysis. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with fourteen individuals with ABI. Data were analysed thematically. RESULTS Four themes emerged. The first two themes: "In my mind I was fine" surviving in aftermath of acquiring a brain injury and The everyday as "derailing" capture the transition process from an initial rehabilitation state characterised by neuropsychological and avoidance coping, towards active rebuilding for PTG. Internal building blocks for PTG and Growing in the social world: "you need to have that social connection" elaborate on the internal (e.g., acceptance, integration of the pre and post-injury self) and external (e.g., social relationships) factors seen to facilitate or obstruct PTG. CONCLUSIONS Under certain conditions, individuals living with ABI may construe positive growth from their experiences. Practitioners can support PTG development by providing individual and family-based supports aimed at increasing acceptance, the integration of self, and social connection throughout all stages of ABI rehabilitation.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONInternal factors such as having a flexible and positive mindset and external factors such as one's social environment can affect how individuals living with an ABI construe positive growth.Individuals with ABI and their families require access to individualised longitudinal support for neuropsychological and social challenges that can result in increased distress and obstruct the development of PTG.Efforts to facilitate acceptance and support the integration of the pre and post-injury self through recognition of continuity of self and processing of new schematic beliefs can benefit PTG development.Rehabilitation providers should support individuals with ABI to develop or maintain a positive social identity within new or existing social groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE Improving participation and quality of life is a desirable goal following traumatic brain injury (TBI). The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize existing findings concerning the role of occupational participation for persons with TBI. METHODS A systematic literature search using four electronic databases was followed by a review of all titles and abstracts. Articles were included if the studies were conducted with adults with TBI, used a qualitative methodology and explored the role or meaning of occupations and occupational participation from the perspectives of individuals with TBI. Following data extraction, a thematic synthesis was conducted. RESULTS A total of 642 articles were identified, of which 14 met all inclusion criteria. Three themes related to the role of occupations for people with TBI emerged: reflecting on change in occupational performance and occupational participation, occupational adaptation, and individual meaning of occupational participation. CONCLUSION The findings demonstrate the significance of occupational participation for people following TBI. Occupational participation enabled better understanding of one's abilities and limitations, assisted in occupational adaptation, and held unique meaning for participants. The findings also highlight the importance of providing long-term services focused on enabling participation in occupations in order to ensure successful adaptation following TBI.Implications for rehabilitationFor persons with TBI, occupational participation enables recognition of changes in their performance, contributes to the process of adaptation and identity (re)construction, fulfils various intrinsic needs and provides a sense of personal meaning.Rehabilitation professionals should recognize persons with TBI as occupational beings and work with individuals to identify the meaning of important occupations in the process of understanding and adapting to changes in capability, performance and participation.The rehabilitation process should focus on enabling persons to perform and participate in the occupations they want, need or are expected to do in their daily lives.National and regional health care systems should ensure that persons with TBI are provided with appropriate physical, social and institutional support and services in order to achieve meaningful occupational engagement.

Abstract
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE This paper reports on the personal experiences of loneliness for individuals living with brain injury. RESEARCH DESIGN This is a qualitative research design, employing semi-structured interviews and subsequent contextualist thematic analysis. METHODS AND PROCEDURES Eleven clients (two female and nine male, aged between 27 and 63 years) with brain injury participated in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was employed in the interpretation of the data. MAIN OUTCOMES AND RESULTS The interview data and subsequent analysis depicted three overarching themes in a healing process - 'Internal Loneliness', 'Healing the Cracks', and 'Visible with Cracks'. Participants described five factors which contribute to their feeling of loneliness: trauma, social isolation, concealment, rejection of part of self, and invisibility of their disability. The participants' accounts also detailed the necessity of a therapeutic intervention and relationship to deal with and address some of these issues. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights that processing the trauma, developing dialectical thinking, self-compassion, and a degree of self-acceptance assist in the movement of participants towards allowing themselves to be 'Visible with Cracks'. This allowance of self to be fully seen appears to serve an important function for reconnection with self and others. These results may help to inform brain injury rehabilitative care, through developing their understanding of the internal loneliness factors that may be influencing an individual's social isolation or social withdrawal.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on the quality of life (QoL) and self-concept of Spanish-speaking U.S. Hispanic immigrants with TBI. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective, qualitative study conducted in a county level I trauma center and community. Semi-structured interviews on QoL and self-concept following TBI were conducted with 24 Spanish-speaking U.S. Hispanic immigrants with TBI living in the community at least 6 months following injury. RESULTS Perceived facilitators of QoL included faith, hopefulness in recovery, empathy for others, and support from others. Perceived barriers to QoL mentioned were symptoms/consequences of injury, employment/financial changes, loss of independence, fear/uncertainty, stigma/shame, lack of medical care, and decreased social integration. Participants described their self-concept after TBI as either a maintained self or loss of self. Those who viewed themselves differently reported physical and emotional changes, gender role conflict, loss of self-worth, and total loss due to the TBI. CONCLUSIONS Spanish-speaking U.S. Hispanic immigrants held a strong faith and positive outlook after TBI in spite of the significant barriers to recovery. A need exists for programs to support creatively the recovery of Spanish-speaking U.S. Hispanic immigrants with limited access to care and resources.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONSpanish-speaking U.S. Hispanic immigrants may experience significant barriers to care following traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as access to rehabilitation services and follow-up care.Rehabilitation professionals should consider the importance of faith and encourage positive thinking and social support when working with Spanish-speaking U.S. Hispanic immigrants on how to cope with TBI-related challenges.Access to Spanish-speaking rehabilitation professionals, translators and Spanish language educational materials could help reduce language-related barriers to recovery among Spanish-speaking U.S. immigrants with TBI.Rehabilitation facilities should develop partnerships with community-based organizations serving the uninsured or underinsured to address the access to rehabilitation and medical needs of Spanish-speaking U.S. immigrants with TBI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND. Concussion is a common injury in an adolescent population with up to 30% experiencing persistent symptoms. Rehabilitation programs that include aerobic exercises can reduce persistent postconcussion symptoms. However, it is unclear if daily life physical activities can also reduce symptoms. PURPOSE. To investigate whether the level of daily life physical activity reduces postconcussion symptoms in the adolescent population. METHODS. Ten adolescents aged 11-18 years with a concussion self-reported their postconcussion symptoms and level of physical activity during the first, third, and sixth months after injury. The extent to which physical activity explained postconcussion health was analyzed using linear mixed-effects modeling. FINDINGS. Higher levels of daily life physical activity were associated with fewer somatic and cognitive symptoms. IMPLICATIONS. These findings suggest that daily life physical activity, including engagement in sports, physical education, or active games, should be encouraged by occupational therapists to promote concussion recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peer support groups can be a way to obtain support, problem solve, and widen social networks. However, there has been no systematic literature review examining the evidence for the use of peer support groups after an acquired brain injury (ABI). OBJECTIVE This review sought to systematically evaluate the evidence for (1) the psychosocial effectiveness, and (2) the experience of peer support groups in adults who had experienced ABI's. METHODS The systematic literature search was conducted across the following four databases: PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, MEDLINE, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) in October 2019. The mixed methods appraisal tool was used to examine the quality of the research. RESULTS 13 papers were included in this review. Limited evidence was found for the psychosocial effectiveness of peer support groups in ABI, although the experience of partaking in a peer support group was largely found to be positive. The benefits and helping factors of taking part in a peer support group can be summarized as: being connected, interacting with others, and providing and receiving support. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this review suggest that peer support groups could be a promising intervention to support individuals and promote adjustment following an ABI.

Abstract
Purpose: To examine the nature of occupational gaps and desired re-engagement following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the relationship to mood, self-discrepancy, and psychosocial functioning.Materials and methods: Fifty-nine adults with severe TBI (73% male, M age = 36.50, SD = 12.54) were administered measures of past, current, and desired occupations (Occupational Gaps Questionnaire), mood (Depression Stress and Anxiety Scale - 21), and self-discrepancy (Head Injury Semantic Differential Scale - version 3). Psychosocial functioning was rated by relatives on the Sydney Psychosocial Reintegration Questionnaire.Results: Participants reported that they engaged in significantly fewer occupations than prior to their injury (p < 0.001). Further, they participated in fewer occupations than they desired (p < 0.001). Desired re-engagement was identified for 18 of the 30 occupations (e.g., working, sports, managing personal finances, and supporting others). A higher number of these re-engagement gaps was significantly related to greater anxiety (r = 0.30, p < 0.05) and lower psychosocial functioning (r = -0.29, p < 0.05). A mediation analysis revealed that re-engagement gaps were indirectly related to self-discrepancy through an association with anxiety.Conclusions: Occupational gaps are commonly experienced after severe traumatic brain injury. Lack of engagement in desired occupations is associated with greater anxiety and poorer psychosocial functioning. Anxiety regarding these gaps may contribute to negative comparisons between one's pre-injury and post-injury self. Identification of occupational gaps and their psychological impact may guide the focus of client-centred rehabilitation approaches.Implications for RehabilitationGaps between current activity engagement (i.e., post injury) and desired activity engagement are commonly experienced after severe traumatic brain injury.Greater desired re-engagement gaps (i.e., when individuals report they are not completing activities that they would like to do) are associated with greater anxiety and poorer psychosocial functioning.Individuals who are unable to re-engage in desired activities are more likely to experience anxiety, which in turn may contribute to negative self-discrepancy.It may be beneficial to explore the personal meaning of changes in occupation after traumatic brain injury.

Abstract
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE Family members (FM) are affected by the impact of an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) upon their relatives and play an important role in rehabilitation and long-term support. This study explores how families are affected and integrates their views on the formal/informal support received as a consequence of ABI. RESEARCH DESIGN A qualitative research design was employed to capture the lived experience of FM of people with ABI. METHOD Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 FM of people with severe ABI. Participants were chosen from respondents to a UK national online survey of affected individuals. Interview data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS Family members' experiences are complex, enduring and are affected by the context in which the ABI occurs as well as by formal/informal support. The grief experienced by FM is ambiguous, develops over time and FM perceive little option but to remain involved. Experience of formal and informal support is noted to vary significantly in availability and quality, poor support exacerbates difficulties and isolates family members. CONCLUSION Greater understanding of the lived experience of FM is needed to support more effective responses to both them and the individual with ABI, integrating services and families to improve quality-of-life.

Abstract
Traumatic injury and subsequent residual cosmetic deformity are subject of intense scrutiny for their effects on objective health measures assessing patient morbidity and mortality. Although these remain principal concerns of all members of the treatment team, of less immediate yet lasting importance to the patient are the social costs of such disfigurement. Subjective feelings of unease and embarrassment can hinder social reintegration and encourage deteriorating psychosocial health. The following presents a case of one such individual who sustained traumatic brain injury and associated pneumocephalus and osteomyelitis requiring surgical debridement with bifrontal craniectomy and lobotomy. Postoperative management was cosmetically improved by the application of a custom-fabricated, 3-dimensionally printed helmet used in place of generic over-the-counter hardware, and the associated improvement reported in patient satisfaction is reported. Abstract
Despite common experiences of identity damage, decline, and deterioration, many brain injury survivors succeed in reconstructing robust identities in the wake of injury. Yet, while this accomplishment greatly benefits survivors' quality of life, little is known about how positive identity work might be facilitated or enhanced in therapeutic institutions. Drawing on data from a women's self-help group, we argue that an egalitarian, reflective, strength-focused, and gender-segregated environment can provide female ABI (acquired brain injury) survivors with a fertile scene for identity enhancement and offer unique opportunities for collective identity development. Sociolinguistic interactional analysis revealed four types of positive identity work undertaken within the group: constructing competent selves; tempering the threat of loss and impairment; resisting infantilisation and delegitimisation; and asserting a collective gender identity. This identity work was facilitated by specific programme attributes and activities and contributed to the global project of decentring disability and destigmatising impairments and losses. We call for increased attention to identity issues in brain injury rehabilitation and argue that gender-segregated programming can provide a unique space for female survivors to construct empowering individual and collective identities after injury.

Abstract
Background Neurological trauma is associated with significant damage to people's pre-injury self-concept. Therapeutic songwriting has been linked with changes in self-concept and improved psychological well-being. Objective This study analyzed the lyrics of songs composed by inpatients with neurological injuries who participated in a targeted songwriting program. The aim of this study was to understand which of the subdomains of the self-concept were the most frequently expressed in songs. Methods An independent, deductive content analysis of 36 songs composed by 12 adults with spinal cord injury or brain injury (11 males, mean age 41 years +/- 13) were undertaken by authors 1 and 2. Results Deductive analysis indicated that when writing about the past self, people created songs that reflected a strong focus on family and descriptions of their personality. In contrast, there is a clear preoccupation with the physical self, on the personal self, and a tendency for spiritual and moral reflections to emerge during the active phase of rehabilitation (song about the present self). Statistical analyses confirmed a significant self-concept subdomain by song interaction, F(10, 110) = 5.98, p < .001, ηp2 = .35), which was primarily due to an increased focus on physical self-concept and a reduced focus on family self-concept in the present song, more than in either past or future songs. Conclusions The analysis process confirmed that songwriting is a vehicle that allows for exploration of self-concept in individuals with neurological impairments. Songwriting may serve as a therapeutic tool to target the most prevalent areas of self-concept challenges for clients undergoing inpatient neurological rehabilitation programs.
