Spring enhancement and summer reduction in carbon uptake during the 2018 drought in northwestern Europe

Carbon fluxes and water-use efficiency in a Pinus tabuliformis plantation in Northeast China and their relationship to drought

The impact of extreme weather events on carbon fluxes and water-use efficiency (WUE) in revegetated areas under water-limited conditions is poorly understood. We analyzed changes in carbon fluxes and WUE over three years of eddy-covariance measurements in a Pinus tabuliformis plantation in Northeast China to investigate carbon fluxes and WUE responses to drought events at different time scales. Mean annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Re) were -368.48, 1042.42, and 673.94 g C m-2, respectively. Drought events increased NEE, as GPP was more sensitive to water stress than Re at different growing stages. Mean annual WUE was 2.46 g C kg-1 H2O, and plant phenology played a key role in WUE responses to drought. Water stress had negative and positive effects on daily WUE at the early and late growing stages, respectively, and daily WUE was generally insensitive to drought at the mid growing stage. A lagged effect existed in the carbon fluxes and WUE dynamics after drought events at various time scales. Water stress at the early growing stage was more important than that at other growing stages on annual carbon sequestration and WUE, as it dominated canopy growth in the current year. The annual mean normalized difference vegetation index controlled interannual variations in carbon fluxes and WUE in the plantation. Our findings contribute to the prediction of possible changes in carbon and water fluxes under climate warming in the afforested areas of Northeast China.

Diminishing carryover benefits of earlier spring vegetation growth

Spring vegetation growth can benefit summer growth by increasing foliage area and carbon sequestration potential, or impair it by consuming additional resources needed for sustaining subsequent growth. However, the prevalent driving mechanism and its temporal changes remain unknown. Using satellite observations and long-term atmospheric CO2 records, here we show a weakening trend of the linkage between spring and summer vegetation growth/productivity in the Northern Hemisphere during 1982-2021. This weakening is driven by warmer and more extreme hot weather that becomes unfavourable for peak-season growth, shifting peak plant functioning away from earlier periods. This is further exacerbated by seasonally growing ecosystem water stress due to reduced water supply and enhanced water demand. Our finding suggests that beneficial carryover effects of spring growth on summer growth are diminishing or even reversing, acting as an early warning sign of the ongoing shift of climatic effects from stimulating to suppressing plant photosynthesis during the early to peak seasons.

Increased photosynthesis during spring drought in energy-limited ecosystems

Drought is often thought to reduce ecosystem photosynthesis. However, theory suggests there is potential for increased photosynthesis during meteorological drought, especially in energy-limited ecosystems. Here, we examine the response of photosynthesis (gross primary productivity, GPP) to meteorological drought across the water-energy limitation spectrum. We find a consistent increase in eddy covariance GPP during spring drought in energy-limited ecosystems (83% of the energy-limited sites). Half of spring GPP sensitivity to precipitation was predicted solely from the wetness index (R2 = 0.47, p < 0.001), with weaker relationships in summer and fall. Our results suggest GPP increases during spring drought for 55% of vegetated Northern Hemisphere lands ( >30° N). We then compare these results to terrestrial biosphere model outputs and remote sensing products. In contrast to trends detected in eddy covariance data, model mean GPP always declined under spring precipitation deficits after controlling for air temperature and light availability. While remote sensing products captured the observed negative spring GPP sensitivity in energy-limited ecosystems, terrestrial biosphere models proved insufficiently sensitive to spring precipitation deficits.

Temperature extremes of 2022 reduced carbon uptake by forests in Europe

The year 2022 saw record breaking temperatures in Europe during both summer and fall. Similar to the recent 2018 drought, close to 30% (3.0 million km2) of the European continent was under severe summer drought. In 2022, the drought was located in central and southeastern Europe, contrasting the Northern-centered 2018 drought. We show, using multiple sets of observations, a reduction of net biospheric carbon uptake in summer (56-62 TgC) over the drought area. Specific sites in France even showed a widespread summertime carbon release by forests, additional to wildfires. Partial compensation (32%) for the decreased carbon uptake due to drought was offered by a warm autumn with prolonged biospheric carbon uptake. The severity of this second drought event in 5 years suggests drought-induced reduced carbon uptake to no longer be exceptional, and important to factor into Europe's developing plans for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions that rely on carbon uptake by forests.

Long-term daily hydrometeorological drought indices, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration for ICOS sites

Eddy covariance sites are ideally suited for the study of extreme events on ecosystems as they allow the exchange of trace gases and energy fluxes between ecosystems and the lower atmosphere to be directly measured on a continuous basis. However, standardized definitions of hydroclimatic extremes are needed to render studies of extreme events comparable across sites. This requires longer datasets than are available from on-site measurements in order to capture the full range of climatic variability. We present a dataset of drought indices based on precipitation (Standardized Precipitation Index, SPI), atmospheric water balance (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI), and soil moisture (Standardized Soil Moisture Index, SSMI) for 101 ecosystem sites from the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) with daily temporal resolution from 1950 to 2021. Additionally, we provide simulated soil moisture and evapotranspiration for each site from the Mesoscale Hydrological Model (mHM). These could be utilised for gap-filling or long-term research, among other applications. We validate our data set with measurements from ICOS and discuss potential research avenues.

Response of Spruce Forest Ecosystem CO2 Fluxes to Inter-Annual Climate Anomalies in the Southern Taiga

Climate extremes and anomalies modify the CO2 ecosystem–atmosphere exchange of the boreal forests and consequently alter the terrestrial carbon stocks and the atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. The effects of the anomalous weather conditions on the CO2 net ecosystem exchange (NEE), total ecosystem respiration (TER), and gross primary production (GPP) of the typical southern taiga nemorose spruce forest were analyzed using continuous eddy covariance flux measurements in the 2015–2020 period. The forest was found to be a source of atmospheric CO2 in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020 (the mean annual GPP/TER ratio was between 0.87 and 0.97). In 2018, the forest was found to act as a CO2 sink (GPP/TER = 1.47) when a positive temperature anomaly in the growing season was accompanied by a negative precipitation anomaly and increased global radiation. The early start of the CO2 uptake in the anomalously warm winter of 2019/2020 did not result in an increase in the annual GPP/TER ratio (0.90). The comparison of the flux data obtained from the nemorose spruce forest on the well-drained soils with the data obtained from paludified spruce forest in the same landscape showed that the mean annual GPP/TER ratio of the sites alternatively responded to the mentioned anomalies. This study suggests that a variety of soil moisture regimes across the southern taiga spruce forests provide a non-uniformity in the response reactions of the CO2 ecosystem–atmosphere exchange on the climate anomalies.

Assessing the Potential of Downscaled Far Red Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence from the Canopy to Leaf Level for Drought Monitoring in Winter Wheat

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from ground, airborne, and satellite-based observations has been increasingly used in drought monitoring recently due to its close relationship with photosynthesis. SIF emissions respond rapidly to droughts, relative to the widely used vegetation indices (VIs), thus indicating their potential for early drought monitoring. The response of SIF to droughts can be attributed to the confounding effects of both the physiology and canopy structure. In order to reduce the reabsorption and scattering effects, the total emitted SIF (SIFtot) was proposed and served as a better tool to estimate GPP compared with the top-of-canopy SIF (SIFtoc). However, the response time and response magnitude of SIFtot to droughts and its relationships with the environmental parameters and soil moisture (SM) (i.e., the knowledge of drought monitoring using SIFtot) remains unclear. Here, the continuous ground data of F760toc (SIFtoc at 760 nm) from a nadir view that was downscaled to F760tot (SIFtot at 760 nm), NIRv, and the NDVI, SM, meteorological, and crop growth parameters were measured from four winter wheat plots with different intensities of drought (well-watered, moderate drought, severe drought, and extreme drought) over 2 months. The results indicated that F760tot was more closely correlated with the SM than the VIs at short time lags but weaker at longer time lags. The daily mean values of F760tot and NIRv were able to distinguish the differences between different drought levels, and F760tot responded quickly to the onset of drought, especially for the moderate drought intensity. These findings demonstrated that F760tot has potential for early drought monitoring and may contribute to mitigating the risk of agricultural drought.

The 2018 European heatwave led to stem dehydration but not to consistent growth reductions in forests

Heatwaves exert disproportionately strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. These impacts remain poorly understood at the tree and species level and across large spatial scales. Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites. Relative to the two preceding years, annual stem growth was not consistently reduced by the 2018 heatwave but stems experienced twice the temporary shrinkage due to depletion of water reserves. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight than broadleaves across gradients of soil and atmospheric drought, suggesting less resilience toward transient stress. In particular, Norway spruce and Scots pine experienced extensive stem dehydration. Our high-resolution dendrometer network was suitable to disentangle the effects of a severe heatwave on tree growth and desiccation at large-spatial scales in situ, and provided insights on which species may be more vulnerable to climate extremes.

The fingerprint of the summer 2018 drought in Europe on ground-based atmospheric CO2 measurements

During the summer of 2018, a widespread drought developed over Northern and Central Europe. The increase in temperature and the reduction of soil moisture have influenced carbon dioxide (CO₂) exchange between the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems in various ways, such as a reduction of photosynthesis, changes in ecosystem respiration, or allowing more frequent fires. In this study, we characterize the resulting perturbation of the atmospheric CO₂ seasonal cycles. 2018 has a good coverage of European regions affected by drought, allowing the investigation of how ecosystem flux anomalies impacted spatial CO₂ gradients between stations. This density of stations is unprecedented compared to previous drought events in 2003 and 2015, particularly thanks to the deployment of the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) network of atmospheric greenhouse gas monitoring stations in recent years. Seasonal CO₂ cycles from 48 European stations were available for 2017 and 2018. Earlier data were retrieved for comparison from international databases or national networks. Here, we show that the usual summer minimum in CO₂ due to the surface carbon uptake was reduced by 1.4 ppm in 2018 for the 10 stations located in the area most affected by the temperature anomaly, mostly in Northern Europe. Notwithstanding, the CO₂ transition phases before and after July were slower in 2018 compared to 2017, suggesting an extension of the growing season, with either continued CO₂ uptake by photosynthesis and/or a reduction in respiration driven by the depletion of substrate for respiration inherited from the previous months due to the drought. For stations with sufficiently long time series, the CO₂ anomaly observed in 2018 was compared to previous European droughts in 2003 and 2015. Considering the areas most affected by the temperature anomalies, we found a higher CO₂ anomaly in 2003 (+3 ppm averaged over 4 sites), and a smaller anomaly in 2015 (+1 ppm averaged over 11 sites) compared to 2018.
