Abstract
Introduction. Plurihormonal pituitary neuroendocrine tumours (PitNET)/adenomas are pituitary neuroendocrine tumours composed of monomorphous cell populations expressing anterior pituitary transcription factors and/or hormones belonging to more than one cell lineage. Studies dedicated to plurihormonal tumours are rare and quite heterogenous with their results, bearing in mind changes in diagnostic criteria and inconsistent use of antibodies for anterior pituitary transcription factors in the diagnostic immunohistochemical panel. Material and Methods. We retrospectively analysed all patients surgically treated for PitNETs from 2016 to July 2022 in a tertiary healthcare institution. All tumours previously diagnosed PitNETs with the word "plurihormonal" were re-examined and potentially re-classified, according to 2022 WHO classification of endocrine tumours. Results. Among 721 patients surgically treated for PitNET in 5.5 years period, the diagnosis of plurihormonal PitNET was established in 11 tumours (1.3%). All tumours showed diffuse and intensive positivity for anterior pituitary transcription factors PIT1 and SF1. Clinically, all patients presented with acromegaly. Conclusions. Retrospective studies related to newly defined plurihormonal PitNETs with a reassessment of diagnoses are necessary due to their rarity and ambition to investigate their origin and biological behaviour. The fact that the majority of plurihormonal PitNETs are clinically presented with acromegaly and show simultaneous positivity to PIT1 and SF1 transcription factors deserve special attention and need for further research in larger cohorts of these exceptional tumours.

Abstract
To enhance our understanding of forest carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation and drought impact on forest ecosystems, the availability of high-resolution annual forest growth maps based on tree-ring width (TRW) would provide a significant advancement to the field. Site-specific characteristics, which can be approximated by high-resolution Earth observation by satellites (EOS), emerge as crucial drivers of forest growth, influencing how climate translates into tree growth. EOS provides information on surface reflectance related to forest characteristics and thus can potentially improve the accuracy of forest growth models based on TRW. Through the modelling of TRW using EOS, climate and topography data, we showed that species-specific models can explain up to 52 % of model variance (Quercus petraea), while combining different species results in relatively poor model performance (R2 = 13 %). The integration of EOS into models based solely on climate and elevation data improved the explained variance by 6 % on average. Leveraging these insights, we successfully generated a map of annual TRW for the year 2021. We employed the area of applicability (AOA) approach to delineate the range in which our models are deemed valid. The calculated AOA for the established forest-type models was 73 % of the study region, indicating robust spatial applicability. Notably, unreliable predictions predominantly occurred in the climate margins of our dataset. In conclusion, our large-scale assessment underscores the efficacy of combining climate, EOS and topographic data to develop robust models for mapping annual TRW. This research not only fills a critical void in the current understanding of forest growth dynamics but also highlights the potential of integrated data sources for comprehensive ecosystem assessments.

Abstract
Polyoxotungstate nanoclusters have recently emerged as promising contrast agents for computed tomography (CT). In order to evaluate their clinical potential, in this study, we evaluated the in vitro CT imaging properties, potential toxic effects in vivo, and tissue distribution of monolacunary Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate, α2-K10P2W17O61.20H2O (mono-WD POM). Mono-WD POM showed superior X-ray attenuation compared to other tungsten-containing nanoclusters (its parent WD-POM and Keggin POM) and the standard iodine-based contrast agent (iohexol). The calculated X-ray attenuation linear slope for mono-WD POM was significantly higher compared to parent WD-POM, Keggin POM, and iohexol (5.97 ± 0.14 vs. 4.84 ± 0.05, 4.55 ± 0.16, and 4.30 ± 0.09, respectively). Acute oral (maximum-administered dose (MAD) = 960 mg/kg) and intravenous administration (1/10, 1/5, and 1/3 MAD) of mono-WD POM did not induce unexpected changes in rats' general habits or mortality. Results of blood gas analysis, CO-oximetry status, and the levels of electrolytes, glucose, lactate, creatinine, and BUN demonstrated a dose-dependent tendency 14 days after intravenous administration of mono-WD POM. The most significant differences compared to the control were observed for 1/3 MAD, being approximately seventy times higher than the typically used dose (0.015 mmol W/kg) of tungsten-based contrast agents. The highest tungsten deposition was found in the kidney (1/3 MAD-0.67 ± 0.12; 1/5 MAD-0.59 ± 0.07; 1/10 MAD-0.54 ± 0.05), which corresponded to detected morphological irregularities, electrolyte imbalance, and increased BUN levels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Non functional parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is one of the rarest malignant neoplasms. Due to the lack of symptoms and laboratory findings, it is mostly diagnosed in late AQ2 stages, when local invasion and dissemination are already present. However, our case is an exception, because it was detected in early stage, with no local invasion present. We present a case of the smallest non-functional PC yet reported and review of the literature. CASE PRESENTATION A 47-year-old woman was admitted to outpatient Clinic where fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of bilateral thyroid nodules (slide 1) and central neck mass (slide 2), which was suspected to be an enlarged lymphatic nodule or parathyroid gland was performed. Results came back as Bethesda I-colloid (slide 1), and Bethesda IV (slide 2), stating that it is hard to distinguish thyroid gland oxyphil lesions from parathyroid cells. Total thyroidectomy was performed as well as excision of the left central neck mass, without any involvement of surrounding structures. Pathological examination revealed bilateral thyroid follicular nodular disease, papillary microcarcinoma, and parathyroid carcinoma with vascular and capsular invasion, measuring 10 × 8 × 7 mm. The immunohistochemical profile included positive PTH, Chromogranin A, and negative TTF1. CONCLUSION Non-functional PC is usually diagnosed in advanced stages, already involving adjacent structures; however, this case presents a rare example. It is important not to exclude PC as a differential diagnosis in the absence of elevated Ca and PTH serum levels. Follow-up will be difficult, since there are no prognostic parameters to rely on.

Abstract
In this study, we demonstrate for the first time, that a discrete metal-oxo cluster α-/β-K6P2W18O62 (WD-POM) exhibits superior performance as a computed tomography (CT) contrast agent, in comparison to the standard contrast agent iohexol. A toxicity evaluation of WD-POM was performed according to standard toxicological protocols using Wistar albino rats. The maximum tolerable dose (MTD) of 2000 mg/kg was initially determined after oral WD-POM application. The acute intravenous toxicity of single WD-POM doses (1/3, 1/5, and 1/10 MTD), which are at least fifty times higher than the typically used dose (0.015 mmol W kg-1) of tungsten-based contrast agents, was evaluated for 14 days. The results of arterial blood gas analysis, CO-oximetry status, electrolyte and lactate levels for 1/10 MTD group (80% survival rate) indicated the mixed respiratory and metabolic acidosis. The highest deposition of WD-POM (0.6 ppm tungsten) was found in the kidney, followed by liver (0.15 ppm tungsten), for which the histological analysis revealed morphological irregularities, although the renal function parameters (creatinine and BUN levels) were within the physiological range. This study is the first and important step in evaluating side effects of polyoxometalate nanoclusters, which in recent years have shown a large potential as therapeutics and contrast agents.

Abstract
The kinetics of wood formation in angiosperms are largely unknown because their complex xylem anatomy precludes using the radial position of vessels and fibers to infer their time of differentiation. We analyzed xylogenesis in ring-porous ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) and diffuse-porous beech (Fagus sylvatica) over 1 yr and proposed a novel procedure to assess the period of vessel and fiber enlargement using a referential radial file (RRF). Our approach captured the dynamics of wood formation and provided a robust estimation of the kinetics of vessel and fiber enlargement. In beech, fibers and vessels had a similar duration of enlargement, decreasing from 14 to 5 d between April and July. In ash, wide vessels formed in April enlarged at a rate of 27 × 103 μm2 d-1 , requiring half the time of contemporary fibers (6 vs 12 d), and less time than the narrower vessels (14 d) formed in May. These findings reveal distinct cell-type-dependent mechanisms for differentiation in diffuse-porous and ring-porous trees, enhancing our understanding of angiosperm wood cell kinetics. Our approach presents an effective method for investigating angiosperm wood formation and provides a more accurate representation of vessel and fiber morphogenesis in wood formation models.

Abstract
Forests account for nearly 90 % of the world's terrestrial biomass in the form of carbon and they support 80 % of the global biodiversity. To understand the underlying forest dynamics, we need a long-term but also relatively high-frequency, networked monitoring system, as traditionally used in meteorology or hydrology. While there are numerous existing forest monitoring sites, particularly in temperate regions, the resulting data streams are rarely connected and do not provide information promptly, which hampers real-time assessments of forest responses to extreme climate events. The technology to build a better global forest monitoring network now exists. This white paper addresses the key structural components needed to achieve a novel meta-network. We propose to complement - rather than replace or unify - the existing heterogeneous infrastructure with standardized, quality-assured linking methods and interacting data processing centers to create an integrated forest monitoring network. These automated (research topic-dependent) linking methods in atmosphere, biosphere, and pedosphere play a key role in scaling site-specific results and processing them in a timely manner. To ensure broad participation from existing monitoring sites and to establish new sites, these linking methods must be as informative, reliable, affordable, and maintainable as possible, and should be supplemented by near real-time remote sensing data. The proposed novel meta-network will enable the detection of emergent patterns that would not be visible from isolated analyses of individual sites. In addition, the near real-time availability of data will facilitate predictions of current forest conditions (nowcasts), which are urgently needed for research and decision making in the face of rapid climate change. We call for international and interdisciplinary efforts in this direction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Under ongoing climate change, more frequent and severe drought periods accompanied by heat waves are expected in the future. Under these conditions, the tree's survival is conditioned by fast recovery of functions after drought release. Therefore, in the presented study, we evaluated the effect of long-term water reduction in soil on tree water use and growth dynamics of Norway spruce. METHODS The experiment was conducted in two young Norway spruce plots located on suboptimal sites at a low altitude of 440 m a.s.l. In the first plot (PE), 25% of precipitation throughfall was excluded since 2007, and the second one represented the control treatment with ambient conditions (PC). Tree sap flow, stem radial increment, and tree water deficit were monitored in two consecutive growing seasons: 2015-2016, with contrasting hydro-climatic conditions. RESULTS Trees in both treatments showed relatively isohydric behavior reflected in a strong reduction of sap flow under the exceptional drought of 2015. Nevertheless, trees from PE treatment reduced sap flow faster than PC under decreasing soil water potential, exhibiting faster stomatal response. This led to a significantly lower sap flow of PE, compared to PC in 2015. The maximal sap flow rates were also lower for PE treatment, compared to PC. Both treatments experienced minimal radial growth during the 2015 drought and subsequent recovery of radial growth under the more the humid year of 2016. However, treatments did not differ significantly in stem radial increments within respective years. DISCUSSION Precipitation exclusion treatment, therefore, led to water loss adjustment, but did not affect growth response to intense drought and growth recovery in the year after drought.

Abstract
(1) Background: Shooting performance is one of the most important determinants of basketball success and is strongly influenced by vertical jump performance. A lot of research attention has been paid to training programs that may improve the vertical jump. However, the literature regarding the improvement of accuracy during the jump shot is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the combination of two training programs on explosive power of the lower extremities during the made jump shot. (2) Methods: A total of 61 male basketball players were assigned into training group (T, n = 31, age 15.32 ± 0.65) which was conducting a specific, i.e., experimental training program, and control group (C, n = 30, age 16.3 ± 0.71 years) involved in a regular training program. The experimental training program included specific plyometric training with shooting training which lasted for 10 weeks. The obtained data were processed by nonparametric statistics to determine the differences in the vertical jump outcomes, as well as to determine the level of impact of the experimental training program. Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. (3) Results: A significant improvement (p ≤ 0.05) was noticed in the T group, in every vertical jump variable (flight time, height of the jump, power, and speed of the jump during a jump shot for two and three points), while there was no improvement within the C group. (4) Conclusions: The combination of plyometric and shooting training has a positive impact on the explosive power of the lower extremities during the jump shot.

Abstract
The C-reactive protein is generally considered a marker of inflammation, and it is widely used in clinical practice as a minimally invasive index of any ongoing inflammatory response. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) supplementation can be beneficial for human health, especially in the sense of its anti-inflammatory action. The aim of this meta-analysis was to, based on the currently available highest level of evidence (prospective, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled data), investigate the effect of ALA supplementation on CRP levels. Prospective, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled clinical trials were extracted after a systematic search of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Scopus databases. A random effect model was used in this meta-analysis to investigate the influence of ALA on the blood CRP level. The subgroup analysis and meta-regression were used to identify the source of heterogeneity. This meta-analysis provided evidence of the positive effect of ALA on the reduction of the blood CRP level. The subgroup analysis and meta-regression results indicated that ALA can reduce the CRP level when administrated at a 600 mg dose, and not in higher or lower doses. Also, a shorter duration of study positively correlates with the reduction of CRP after ALA supplementation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the impact of repurposing health care facilities in response to COVID-19 on the access of patients with thyroid disease to health care. METHODS This study consisted of a web-based survey. The survey was anonymous and consisted of forty questions. RESULTS This survey included 206 respondents. 91.3% of the respondents had health insurance through the Republic Fund of Health Insurance, 9.7% had private or both health insurances, and 3.4% did not have any health insurance. A significant proportion of respondents (60.4%) had to switch from public to private health care to reach a physician and 73.8% had to switch from public to private laboratories. For the 91.9%, this was perceived as a financial burden. Before the pandemic, 83.1% of respondents reported regular follow-up by physicians, which decreased to 44.9% during the pandemic (p < 0.01). 76.3% of the respondents regarded that their thyroid disease was managed optimally before the pandemic, while this figure declined to only 48% during the pandemic (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the medical care of thyroid patients in Serbia. For the patients treated in the public health care system, access to general practice was hindered, while access to specialist care was disrupted. It led to a switch from public to private health care, which was perceived as a financial burden for almost all the respondents. However, private health care proved to be an important safety net when the public system was overwhelmed.

Abstract
The wider application of gentamicin is limited by potential adverse effects
(nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity). The goal of our study was to investigate the effects of
chloroquine on biochemical and oxidative stress parameters in gentamicin-induced
nephrotoxicity in rats. Animals were randomly divided into 1 of 5 groups. First was Sham
group (0.9% NaCl) (n = 8); second group received gentamicin (n = 8); while third (n = 8),
fourth (n = 8) and fifth group (n = 8) received gentamicin and chloroquine in a dose of
0.3, 1 and 3 mg/kg, respectively. The urea and creatinine levels were significantly lower
in chloroquine treated groups in doses of 0.3 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg (P <
0.001). Total oxidant status and the oxidative stress index showed significantly lower
values in all chloroquine treated groups (P < 0.001;
P < 0.005). Malondialdehyde was lower in chloroquine treatment in
doses of 0.3 mg/kg (P < 0.005) and 3 mg/kg (P <
0.05). Chloroquine treatment markedly reduced the level of superoxide dismutase in doses
of 1 mg/kg (P < 0.01) and 3 mg/kg (P < 0.05). Our
study showed that chloroquine attenuates gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats
regarding biochemical and oxidative stress parameters.

Abstract
Heatwaves exert disproportionately strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. These impacts remain poorly understood at the tree and species level and across large spatial scales. Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites. Relative to the two preceding years, annual stem growth was not consistently reduced by the 2018 heatwave but stems experienced twice the temporary shrinkage due to depletion of water reserves. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight than broadleaves across gradients of soil and atmospheric drought, suggesting less resilience toward transient stress. In particular, Norway spruce and Scots pine experienced extensive stem dehydration. Our high-resolution dendrometer network was suitable to disentangle the effects of a severe heatwave on tree growth and desiccation at large-spatial scales in situ, and provided insights on which species may be more vulnerable to climate extremes.

Abstract
Febrile neutropenia is a serious chemotherapy-related adverse event that can lead to complications and death and it could be a significant burden on the organization of the health care system. The risk for febrile neutropenia is determined by chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression and the presence of patient-related risk factors. In the literature, various patient-related risk factors are taken into consideration. It was suggested that the patient age is the one of the most important ones. If the estimated risk for the febrile neutropenia is high, prophylactic use of myeloid growth factors (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) is recommended. In patients with solid tumors and lymphomas it was shown that the prophylactic use of myeloid growth factors significantly reduces the incidence of febrile neutropenia, early mortality during chemotherapy and infection-induced mortality. In patients who develop febrile neutropenia, there is less evidence for the therapeutic use of myeloid growth factors compared to prophylactic use, although there is a clear benefit in reducing the time to neutrophil count recovery. There is a clear benefit for hospitalized patients, also, in reducing duration of hospitalization. In patients with febrile neutropenia who have not been previously treated with prophylactic myeloid factors, assessment of risk factors for the complications is advised. In patients with high-risk febrile neutropenia therapeutic use of growth should be considered.

Abstract
Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) has increased substantially since the industrial revolution began, and physiological responses to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations reportedly alter the biometry and wood structure of trees. Additionally, soil nutrient availability may play an important role in regulating these responses. Therefore, in this study, we grew 288 two-year-old saplings of sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) in lamellar glass domes for three years to evaluate the effects of CO2 concentrations and nutrient supply on above- and belowground biomass, wood density, and wood structure. Elevated CO2 increased above- and belowground biomass by 44.3% and 46.9%, respectively. However, under elevated CO2 treatment, sapling wood density was markedly lower (approximately 1.7%), and notably wider growth rings-and larger, more efficient conduits leading to increased hydraulic conductance-were observed. Moreover, despite the vessels being larger in saplings under elevated CO2, the vessels were significantly fewer (p = 0.023). No direct effects of nutrient supply were observed on biomass growth, wood density, or wood structure, except for a notable decrease in specific leaf area. These results suggest that, although fewer and larger conduits may render the xylem more vulnerable to embolism formation under drought conditions, the high growth rate in sessile oak saplings under elevated CO2 is supported by an efficient vascular system and may increase biomass production in this tree species. Nevertheless, the decreased mechanical strength, indicated by low density and xylem vulnerability to drought, may lead to earlier mortality, offsetting the positive effects of elevated CO2 levels in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review analyzes the prevalence of the most important comorbidities associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) in the growing population of patients with Cushing's syndrome (CS). MATERIALS AND METHODS The review is arranged in a way to list important risk factors for AF and the references, which suggest the significant prevalence of these particular risk factors in CS. The search is conducted on PubMed, Science Direct, Springer, Wiley, SAGE, Oxford Press, and Google Scholar. PubMed search for "Cushing's syndrome atrial fibrillation" on 8/7/2019 revealed 4 papers only. None of them either analyzed or implicated high risk for AF in CS. RESULTS Arterial hypertension (AHT) can be found in approximately 80% of adult individuals with endogenous CS and in 20% of patients with exogenous CS. The reported prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is from 13% to 47% in CS patients and the risk for de novo DM is approximately two-fold higher in individuals treated with glucocorticoids. High risk for myocardial infarction (MI) with hazard ratio (HR) 3.7 (95% confidence intervals, CI 2.4-5) in patients with endogenous CS was found. In CS patients the obesity can be detected in up to 41% and overweight in 21-48%. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), infections, and hypokalemia are also more prevalent in CS as compared to healthy population. All cited comorbidities have been associated with AF. Therefore, clustering of the important factors associated with AF is confirmed repeatedly in CS. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of AF in CS should be studied more precisely, both in a scientific way and at the individual patient's level.

Abstract
Objectives The present paper aims to review important contemporary information about VTE risk in endogenous and exogenous CS, as a substantial discrepancy exists between the results of a recent meta-analysis confirming the increased risk for VTE and the absence of CS in VTE guidelines. Methods An extensive search of relevant databases (e.g. PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus) was performed in order to establish the interconnectedness of the following terms: Cushing's syndrome, venous thromboembolism, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism. Results The analysis demonstrated that patients with CS have about ten times the risk for VTE, particularly during the first year following the diagnosis of CS. Oral glucocorticoid users (with iatrogenic CS) have a 3-fold increase in risk of VTE in comparison with non-users. The most recent 2019 meta-analysis encompassed 7142 patients with endogenous CS (including Cushing's disease) undergoing transsphenoidal surgery or adrenalectomy, and their risk of unprovoked VTE was almost 18 times higher in comparison with a healthy population. Conclusion Over the past 50 years considerable evidence of increased VTE risk in CS has been accumulated. It pertains to both endogenous and exogenous type of CS and has been confirmed in the vast majority, if not all the available studies, including meta-analyses. Nevertheless, official CS guidelines make no mention of CS as a VTE risk factor, even though it is important that not only physicians who treat CS, but also physicians who manage patients with suspected VTE be aware of increased VTE risk.

Abstract
Floodplain forests are very complex, productive ecosystems, capable of storing huge amounts of soil carbon. With the increasing occurrence of extreme events, they are today among the most threatened ecosystems. Our study's main goal was to assess the productivity of a floodplain forest located at Lanžhot in the Czech Republic from two perspectives: carbon uptake (using an eddy covariance method) and stem radius variations (using dendrometers). We aimed to determine which conditions allow for high ecosystem production and what role drought plays in reducing such production potential. Additionally, we were interested to determine the relative soil water content threshold indicating the onset and duration of this event. We hypothesized that summer drought in 2018 had the most significant negative effects on the overall annual carbon and water budgets. In contrast with our original hypothesis, we found that an exceptionally warm spring in 2018 caused a positive gross primary production (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) anomaly that consequently led in 2018 to the highest seasonal total GPP and ET from all of the investigated years (2015–2018). The results showed ring-porous species to be the most drought resistant. Relative soil water content threshold of approximately 0.45 was determined as indicating the onset of drought stress. Accordingly, there is a serious possibility that addiction to social networking sites (SNS) can lead to psychosocial and behavioral disorders, and other negative consequences on health-related issues. So, the aim of this study was to determine the association between the use of social networking sites and its dependence on symptoms of depression and anxiety. This cross-sectional study was carried out at the University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine from February to May, 2019. All of the respondents were assessed by using an appropriate questionnaire. The study included 1405 randomly selected respondents (411 males and 994 females). The strongest predictor of whether one has high levels of depression symptoms was state of conflict, where the odds ratio was 10.28. This indicates that the respondents with higher scores of the conflict component have symptoms of depression 10.28 times more often than others. It has been observed that depression symptoms are also more common in those respondents with expressed withdrawal symptoms (OR = 4.27), and with mood modification (OR = 1.82). Anxiety symptoms, similar to those of depression, are most present in individuals with conflict state (OR = 10.31), in those with withdrawal symptoms (OR = 6.83), and then with mood modification (OR = 2.55). The number of active accounts/profiles and number of devices, as well as state of salience and tolerance played no part in any of the cases. There is no doubt that there is a direct link between SNS and depression and anxiety. While these links may not be causal, it is quite certain that overuse of social networks exacerbates these symptoms.
Key messages
There is no doubt that there is a direct link between SNS and depression and anxiety. Strategies for self-control and limited SNS use should be developed by mental health professionals.

Abstract
Recently, the interest is increasing to find alternatives to replace the usage of antibiotics since their massive and improper usage enhance the antibiotic resistance in human pathogens. In this study, for the first time we showed that the soil proteins have very high antibacterial activity (98% of growth inhibition) against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), one of the most threatening human pathogens. We found that the protein extract (C3) from the forest with past intensive management showed higher antibacterial activity than that of unmanaged forest. The MIC and IC50 were found to be 30 and 15.0 μg protein g-1 dry soil respectively. C3 was found to kill the bacteria by cell wall disruption and genotoxicity which was confirmed by optical and fluorescent microscopy and comet assay. According to qPCR study, the mecA (the antibiotic resistant gene) expression in MRSA was found to be down-regulated after C3 treatment. In contrast, C3 showed no hemolytic toxicity on human red blood cells which was confirmed by hemolytic assay. According to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS), 144 proteins were identified in C3 among which the majority belonged to Gram negative bacteria (45.8%). Altogether, our results will help to develop novel, cost-effective, non-toxic and highly efficient antibacterial medicines from natural sources against antibiotic resistant infections.

Abstract
Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) represents a chronic tubulointerstitial nephropathy which is followed by the progression of kidney fibrosis to end-stage kidney failure. The critical involvement of poisons in food (aristolochic acid (AA), ochratoxin, and heavy metals) and selenium deficiency are among nutritive factors which contribute to the pathogenesis of BEN, due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) liberation and/or decreased antioxidative defence system. The aim of the study is to distinguish a possible systemic and local origin of ROS through the measurement of xanthine oxidase (XO) activity in urine and plasma, along with the determination of the oxidative changes in lipids and proteins. The study included 50 patients with BEN and 38 control healthy subjects. We noted increased levels of both thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) in the plasma of patients with BEN, compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The urinary levels of AOPPs were higher in patients with BEN in comparison to the control (p < 0.001). The specific activity of XO was significantly lower in plasma and urine in BEN samples, compared to controls (p < 0.005). Based on these results, we hypothesize that XO might not be considered a direct systemic or local contributor to ROS production in BEN, most probably because of the diminished kidney functional tissue mass and/or AA-induced changes in purine nucleotide conformation. The increased AOPP and TBARS level in both plasma and urine in BEN may predict ROS systemic liberation with toxic local effects.

Abstract

Lithium is the smallest monovalent cation with many different biological effects.
Although lithium is present in the pharmacotherapy of psychiatric illnesses for decades, its
precise mechanism of action is still not clarified. Today lithium represents first-line therapy
for bipolar disorders (because it possesses both antimanic and antidepressant properties) and
the adjunctive treatment for major depression (due to its antisuicidal effects). Beside, lithium
showed some protective effects in neurological diseases including acute neural injury, chronic
degenerative conditions, Alzheimer's disease as well as in treating leucopenia, hepatitis and
some renal diseases. Recent evidence suggested that lithium also possesses some anticancer
properties due to its inhibition of Glycogen Synthase Kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) which is included
in the regulation of a lot of important cellular processes such as: glycogen metabolism,
inflammation, immunomodulation, apoptosis, tissue injury, regeneration etc.

Although recent evidence suggested a potential utility of lithium in different conditions, its
broader use in clinical practice still trails. The reason for this is a narrow therapeutic index of
lithium, numerous toxic effects in various organ systems and some clinically relevant interactions
with other drugs. Additionally, it is necessary to perform more preclinical as well as
clinical studies in order to a precise therapeutic range of lithium, as well as its detailed
mechanism of action. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge concerning
the pharmacological and toxicological effects of lithium.

Abstract
RATIONALE, AIMS, AND OBJECTIVE There is limited information about the comparative effectiveness of the START/STOPP (Screening Tool of Older Person's Prescriptions/Screening Tool to Alert doctors to Right Treatment) criteria and the Ghent Older People's Prescriptions community Pharmacy Screening tool (GheOP3 S tool) for the screening of potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) in the geriatric population. Considering this, the aim of this study was to compare the ability of the START/STOPP criteria and GheOP3 S tool to identify the PIP and potential prescribing omissions (PPOs) among elderly patients visiting their primary care physician. METHODS This is a retrospective observational study where a total of 422 subjects were included. The Charlson Co-morbidity Index (CCI) and the Medicines Co-morbidity Index (MCI) for older people were used to determine the co-morbidity status. The user's diagnosis and medications prescribed were analysed with the START/STOPP criteria and GheOP3 S tool. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare these criteria. The statistical relationship between the occurrence of PIP and users' age, the number of medication prescribed, the number of diagnoses, CCI, and MCI was determined with one-tailed bivariate correlation. RESULTS The START/STOPP criteria detected 843 PIPs and 1067 PPOs, while the GheOP3 S tool detected 936 PIPs and 202 PPOs. The GheOP3 S tool detected significantly more PIPs than did the STOPP criteria (P = 0.003). A significantly higher number of PPOs were detected with the START criterion (P < 0.0001). The results obtained with the START/STOPP criteria positively correlated with mentioned variables. Oppositely, there is a negative correlation between the results obtained with the GheOP3 S tool and age. Still, the positive correlation could be found with the rest of the variables. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that both tested tools demonstrated efficiency to detect PIPs and PPOs. The GheOP3 S tool detected significantly more PIPs than did the STOPP criteria. On the other hand, the START criteria performed much better for the screening of PPOs.

Abstract
There is currently limited information on the comparative effectiveness of the European Union(7)-potentially inappropriate medication (EU(7)-PIM) list and the Beers criteria for screening PIMs, of which PIMs are a significant concern, in the geriatric population of nursing home residents. This study aims to determine and compare the rates of PIMs detected with the Beers criteria (five sections of which the first is a list of inappropriate medications in older adults) and the EU(7)-PIM list (based on the first section of the Beers criteria). The study, conducted in Gerontology Center Belgrade (n = 427), is retrospective and observational. The EU(7)-PIM list detected 876 PIMs, while the first section of the Beers criteria detected 782 PIMs (1,803 with all five sections). The majority of PIMs belong to psychotropic drugs (benzodiazepines being the most common). The EU(7)-PIM list detected significantly more PIMs than the first section of the Beers criteria (2.03 ± 1.63 vs. 1.83 ± 1.27; p = .0005). The number of detected PIMs with both criteria correlates with age, the number of chronic illnesses, the number of medication prescribed, and the comorbidity status. Ultimately, the EU(7)-PIM list detected more PIMs compared to the first section of the Beers criterion.

Abstract
Coppicing consists of periodically cutting back tree stems to ground level to stimulate the growth of multiple stems from the stool. In Central Europe, many coppiced forests were abandoned at the beginning of the last century owing to a decline in the demand for charcoal and wood. This was assumed to enable the forests to recover and the properties to become similar to those of unmanaged forest (high forest). Most studies on abandoned coppiced forest have focused on forest recovery, while soil recovery has generally been overlooked. With the aim of filling this gap, this study investigated the effect of coppicing abandonment on soil recovery by analysing the changes in soil enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, invertase, urease, acid phosphatase and arylsulphatase). Two differently managed sessile oak (Quercus petraea) forests were selected for study: a former coppice forest, abandoned >90 years ago, and an undisturbed forest. The analytical data were compared to assess the degree of recovery of the soil in the abandoned coppice forest. The soil organic matter content was two times lower in the abandoned coppice than in the high forest, suggesting that organic matter depletion due the past coppicing is a long-term effect. All of the absolute enzyme activities were also two times lower in the abandoned coppice forest soil than in the high forest soil. However, the specific enzyme activities were similar in both types of soil. This indicates that metabolic activity is similar in both soil types, suggesting that it either recovers faster than organic matter and soil enzyme activity or that, despite the depletion in organic matter and enzyme activities, metabolic activity was sustained in coppiced forest soil. However, in the latter case this would imply that organic matter and soil enzymes were lost in exactly the same proportion, which is highly improbable.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical evaluation of the Endothelial Function (EF) is becoming an essential step in the quality assessment of cardiovascular risk prevention and rational pharmacotherapy of cardiovascular disorders. The existing pieces of evidence suggested that Calcium Channel Blockers (CCB) can induce positive effects on impaired EF. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of CCB on EF, we performed a meta-analysis of available data from randomized and placebo-controlled or other treatment-controlled clinical studies encompassing effects of CCB on EF, as measured by Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery. METHODS The relevant clinical studies were searched by systematic exploration of the appropriate databases until November 30, 2017. A random-effect model was conducted. The primary outcome was the percentage change in FMD between the baseline and the final levels in response to investigated drugs. RESULTS Fifteen randomized clinical studies with 33 arms were identified. CCB improved FMD more pronounced than thiazide diuretics - TD (3 studies, 157 participants, WMD=2.08%, 95% CI=0.35-3.80%; P=0.02). Oppositely, ACE Inhibitors (ACEI) and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB) notably improved FMD if compared to CCB (CCB vs. ACEI: 5 studies, 533 participants, WMD = -1.62%, 95% CI = -2.74% to -0.50%; P=0.005; and CCB vs. ARB: 9 studies, 669 participants, WMD = -1.52%, 95% CI = -2.22% to -0.81%; P=0.0001). CCB effects on EF were similar to those evoked by beta blockers or placebo. CONCLUSION CCB improved EF to a more prominent extent only if paralleled to TD, while inversely; ACEI and ARB were more effective in augmenting FMD.

Abstract
: This study examined the hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of anthocyanins from Vaccinim myrtillus (bilberry) fruit extract on the acute liver failure caused by carbon tetrachloride-CCl4 (3 mL/kg, i.p.). The preventive treatment of the bilberry extract (200 mg anthocyanins/kg, orally, 7 days) prior to the exposure to the CCl4 resulted in an evident decrease in markers of liver damage (glutamate dehydrogenase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase), and reduced pro-oxidative (conjugated dienes, lipid hydroperoxide, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, advanced oxidation protein products, NADPH oxidase, hydrogen peroxide, oxidized glutathione), and pro-inflammatory markers (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, nitrite, myeloperoxidase, inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, CD68, lipocalin-2), and also caused a significant decrease in the dissipation of the liver antioxidative defence capacities (reduced glutathione, glutathione S-transferase, and quinone reductase) in comparison to the results detected in the animals treated with CCl4 exclusively. The administration of the anthocyanins prevented the arginine metabolism's diversion towards the citrulline, decreased the catabolism of polyamines (the activity of putrescine oxidase and spermine oxidase), and significantly reduced the excessive activation and hyperplasia of the Kupffer cells. There was also an absence of necrosis, in regard to the toxic effect of CCl4 alone. The hepatoprotective mechanisms of bilberry extract are based on the inhibition of pro-oxidative mediators, strong anti-inflammatory properties, inducing of hepatic phase II antioxidant enzymes (glutathione S-transferase, quinone reductase) and reduced glutathione, hypoplasia of Kupffer cells, and a decrease in the catabolism of polyamines.

Abstract
This study examined the nephroprotective effects of 15 different anthocyanins from the bilberry extract on the acute kidney injury caused by CCl4. The acute nephrotoxicity in rats was induced 24 h after the treatment with a single dose of CCl4 (3 mL/kg, i.p.).The nephroprotective effects of the anthocyanins were examined in the animals that had been given the bilberry extract in a single dose of 200 mg of anthocyanins/kg daily, 7 days orally, while on the seventh day, 3 h after the last dose of anthocyanins, the animals received a single dose of CCl4 (3 mL/kg, i.p.) and were sacrificed 24 h later. When the nephrotoxicant alone was administered, it resulted in a substantial increase of the pro-oxidative (TBARS, CD, H2O2, XO, and GSSG) and pro-inflammatory markers (TNF-α, NO, and MPO), as well as a noticeable reduction of the antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, POD, GPx, GST, GR) and GSH when compared to the results of the control group. Moreover, the application of CCl4 significantly influenced a reduction of the renal function, as well as an increase in the sensitive and specific injury indicators of the kidney epithelial cells (β2-microglobulin, NGAL, KIM1/TIM1) in the serum and urine of rats. The pretreatment of the animals poisoned with CCl4 with the anthocyanins from the bilberry extract led to a noticeable reduction in the pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory markers with reduced consumption of the antioxidant defence kidney capacity, compared to the animals exposed to CCl4 alone. Anthocyanins have been protective for the kidney parenchyma, with an apparent absence of the tubular and periglomerular necrosis, severe degenerative changes, inflammatory mononuclear infiltrates and dilatation of proximal and distal tubules, in contrast to the CCl4-intoxicated animals. The nephroprotective effects of anthocyanins can be explained by strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects achieved through the stabilization and neutralization of highly reactive and unstable toxic CCl4 metabolites.

Abstract
We have performed an in vitro study on isolated intact or denuded femoral artery (FA) of healthy, diabetic, and/or rats submitted to the FA occlusion. The aim was to determine the contribution of endothelium and endothelial dysfunction (ED) on serotonin-induced action in FA. Further, the contribution of angiotensin II and cyclooxygenase products of arachidonic acid was investigated. A marker of ED, vWF was measured in animal serum. Serotonin induced contraction-dependent contraction of isolated FA, which was increased in preparations with endothelium. Pathological conditions such as endothelial denudation, nicotine-induced ED, diabetes or occlusion of FA reduced serotonin-induced contraction. Comparable reduction of serotonin-induced contraction was achieved after inhibition of AT1 receptors with losartan in isolated FA with intact endothelium. Our results demonstrate that angiotensin II contributes to the enhancement of serotonin-induced contraction of femoral arteries with intact endothelium. This increase is attenuated by endothelium removal, nicotine treatment, vascular occlusion, and/or hyperglycemia.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of a 7-day rapid
weight loss (RWL) intervention on body composition and biomarkers of creatine
metabolism in eight elite judokas during a pre-competition period. RWL induced a
significant drop in weight (81.7±10.7 kg at baseline vs. 76.8 ± 10.3 kg at follow-up; p<.001), fat mass (12.6±5.6 kg vs. 9.2±4.0 kg; p=.003) and
fat-free mass (69.1±7.3 kg vs.
67.6±7.7 kg; p=.05), accompanied by an increase in serum creatinine levels at
follow-up (104.0±10.5 µmol/L vs.
114.9±10.2 µmol/L; p=.009). An acute restriction of food and fluid intake
appears to negatively affect fat-free mass and indices of kidney function in
judokas.

Abstract
Numerous studies have demonstrated a correlation between adequacy of hemodialysis (HD) and patient mortality. In this study we evaluated the effect of adequacy of dialysis and nutrition on morbidity and working rehabilitation. Single center experience carried out in 1998 in an outpatient university-affiliated dialysis facility was presented. A total of 181 patients, on HD over 3 months, was included in the study; mean age 54.5 years, mean duration of HD 5.4 years. Thirthy-two patients were hospitalized in 1998. Patients with an eKt/V < 0.8 had significantly more frequent and extended hospitalizations than patients with eKt/V > 1.2. In the regression model eKt/V had a significant effect on hospital days. Serum albumin, as an index of nutrition, was also found to significantly influence hospitalizations. Patients with a BMI < 20.0 kg/m2 were found to have significantly more frequent hospitalizations, more hospital days/patient, and hospital days/hospitalized patient/year than those with a BMI > 25.0 kg/m2. BMI < 20.0 kg/m2 was associated with a significantly lower dialysis adequacy (eKt/V and URR) and more severe anemia. However, regression model failed to confirm a statistically significant association of BMI with hospital days. The best working rehabilitation (stage 1), according to the EDTA criteria, was obtained in patients with significantly (p<0.05) higher eKt/V, URR, albumin, nPNA, and body fat than in patients at stage 6 (not able to work, and not able to take care of themselves). This study has established that dialysis adequacy and nutrition have an effect on morbidity (estimated through hospitalizations) and patient rehabilitation. (Int J Artif Organs 2000; 23: 83–9)

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in hemodialysis patients can be transmitted by transfusions and nosocomially. A high prevalence of HCV infection, over 50%, was demonstrated in our hemodialysis (HD) unit. In order to prevent the nosocomial spread of HCV infection in the HD unit a prospective study was begun separating anti-HCV positive patients from the negative ones. A total of 170 patients (83 anti-HCV positive) started this study in September 1994 and were followed for 4 years. A separate room and dedicated equipment were assigned to anti-HCV positive and anti-HCV negative patients. Of those 170 patients there were 15 hepatitis B virus (HBV) positive patients, 5 of whom were anti-HCV positive, who were treated in a separate room on dialysis equipment for anti-HCV positive or negative patients. Application of general precautions, as recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was reinforced. During the first 12 weeks after implementing the precautions seven more anti-HCV positive patients were detected, and by December 1995 another two HCV infected patients were found. The follow-up included all changes in HD population treated until the end of 1998. The incidence of seroconversion to HCV was 12.9% in 1995, 7.1% in 1996, 5.0% in 1997, and 6.6% in 1998. The higher incidence of seroconversion in September to November 1994 was probably due to the nosocomial infection being in the incubation period at the time of isolation. This prospective study in a large HD unit with a high prevalence of HCV infection demonstrates a relatively successful prevention of HCV spread. Procedure-related transmission of HCV in hemodialysis could be prevented by rigorous application of universal precautions as recommended by the CDC. As a second line of prevention, in highly burdened dialysis centers, segregation of HCV positive patients can help control nosocomial transmission.

Abstract
A toxicity evaluation of two Keggin-type heteropolytungstates, K7[Ti2PW10O40]·6H2O and K6H[SiV3W9O40]·3H2O, with different inhibitory potencies toward acetylcholinesterase activity (IC50 values of 1.04×10-6 and 4.80×10-4mol/L, respectively) was performed. Wistar albino rats were orally treated with single doses (5 and 50mg/kg) of both investigated compounds. The biochemical parameters of renal (serum urea and creatinine) and liver function (direct and total bilirubin, alanine transaminase, and aspartate aminotransferase) were determined after 24h and 14days. A histopathological analysis of liver tissue was carried out 14days after the polyoxotungstate administration. Both applied doses of the investigated compounds did not induce statistically significant alterations of the renal function markers. However, the polyoxotungstate treatment caused an increase in the activities of serum alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase in a time- and concentration-dependent manner, although statistically significant changes in bilirubin concentrations were not observed. Furthermore, the detected hepatotoxic effect was confirmed by histhopathological analysis that suggested some reversible liver tissue damage two weeks after the treatment, especially in the case of K6H[SiV3W9O40]·3H2O. Accordingly, the toxicity of these two polyoxotungstates with anti-acetylcholinesterase effect cannot be considered as a severe one, but their potential clinical application would require a more complex toxicological study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION 18F-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) is routinely used in the detection of malignant disease based on the property of malignant cells to fuel their growth and replication by increased glucose uptake. Malignant lesions are rare in the sellar region, while pituitary adenomas are the most common pathology. These are benign neoplasms with insidious onset and low proliferation activity, and therefore are only exceptionally detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT. Studies that compare the biology of pituitary adenomas and their radiological properties using PET/CT are still lacking. CASE REPORT We investigate and discuss tumour biology in light of increased 18F-FDG avidity in a symptom-free, 70-year-old male patient, previously treated for two different malignancies (lung and rectal). Increased tracer accumulation in the sellar region was incidentally detected on a follow-up 18F-FDG PET/CT scan. Additional MRI disclosed pituitary adenoma. Normal hormonal status was found, consistent with the diagnosis of non-functioning pituitary adenoma. Analysis of tumour tissue after pituitary surgery confirmed a silent gonadotroph adenoma with low proliferation index. Low expression of oncogene-induced senescence markers did not support senescence as the explanation for the tumour's low proliferative activity although it was in consonance with the hormonal activity. CONCLUSIONS Pituitary adenomas can manifest as hypermetabolic foci on 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging with increased tracer uptake even in indolent, clinically silent pituitary adenomas with low mitotic activity. Special attention should be paid to evaluation of 18F-FDG avid pituitary adenomas in patients with multiple malignancies, bearing in mind that avidity does not always mirror its biological behaviour.

Abstract
The endothelium is one of the most important constituents of vascular homeostasis, which is achieved through continual and balanced production of different relaxing and contractile factors. When there is a pathological disturbance in release of these products, endothelial dysfunction (ED) will probably occur. ED is considered to be the initial step in the development of atherosclerosis. This pathological activation and inadequate functioning of endothelial cells was shown to be to some extent a reversible process, which all together resulted in increased interest in investigation of different beneficial treatment options. To this point, the pharmacological approach, including for example, the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or statins, was clearly shown to be effective in the improvement of ED. One of many critical issues underlying ED represents instability in the balance between nitric oxide and angiotensin II (Ang II) production. Considering that Ang II was confirmed to be important for the development of ED, the aim of this review article was to summarize the findings of up to date clinical studies associated with therapeutic application of angiotensin receptor blockers and improvement in ED. In addition, it was of interest to review the pleiotropic actions of angiotensin receptor blockers linked to the improvement of ED. The prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo or active-controlled clinical trials were identified and selected for the final evaluation.

Abstract
Recent findings have demonstrated that serotonin is an important participant in the development and progression of peripheral artery diseases. Taking this into consideration, the goals of this study were to investigate the effects of serotonin on isolated Wistar rat femoral arteries in both healthy and diabetic animals, with and without artery occlusion, with a particular focus on determining the role of calcium in this process. Contraction experiments with serotonin on intact and denuded femoral artery rings, in the presence or absence of nifedipine and ouabain (both separately, or in combination), as well as Ca2+ -free Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate solution were performed. The serotonin-induced results were concentration dependent, but only in healthy animals. The endothelium-dependent contraction of the femoral artery was assessed. In healthy animals, the endothelium-reliant part of contraction was dependent on the extracellular calcium, while the smooth muscle-related part was instead dependent on the intracellular calcium. In diabetic animals, both nifedipine and ouabain influenced serotonin-induced vascular effects by blocking intracellular calcium pathways. However, this was diminished after the simultaneous administration of both blockers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Exaggerated adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol responses to ghrelin in Cushing's disease (CD) have previously been reported, similarly to responses to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). We assessed the ability of ghrelin to enhance ACTH and cortisol responses when added to CRH stimulation in CD patients. METHODS In 21 CD patients (18 females, 3 males; age 49.8 ± 10.2 years; BMI 29.8 ± 0.8) and 8 healthy subjects (7 females, 1 male; age 40.6 ± 5.3 years; BMI 29.9 ± 1.2), we administered (1) ghrelin 100 µg i.v. bolus, (2) CRH 100 µg i.v. bolus, and (3) ghrelin + CRH combination. ACTH and cortisol were analyzed by commercially available kits from samples taken at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 min. ACTH and cortisol responses were calculated as peak and area under the curve (AUC0-120 min). RESULTS ACTH and cortisol at baseline and stimulated with ghrelin and/or CRH (peak and AUC0-120 min) were significantly higher in CD patients compared to controls (p < 0.01). ACTH and cortisol responses to ghrelin or CRH were similar in CD patients. Combined ghrelin + CRH administration in CD patients produced the highest ACTH response (peak and AUC0-120 min) compared to ghrelin or CRH alone (p < 0.01). Cortisol responses after ghrelin + CRH were uncoupled with ACTH responses and similar to the response to ghrelin or CRH alone in both groups. ACTH and cortisol responses, during all three tests, were similar in CD patients with micro- or macroadenomas. CONCLUSION Ghrelin administration causes exaggerated ACTH and cortisol responses in CD patients compared to healthy controls. In combination with CRH, it additionally enhances ACTH secretion without further additive effect on cortisol output.

Abstract
There are only a few published studies related to the population-based etiology of hypopituitarism. New risks for developing hypopituitarism have been recognized in the last 10 years. Aim. To present data regarding the etiology of hypopituitarism collected in a tertiary center over the last decade. This is a cross-sectional database study. Patients and Methods. We included 512 patients (pts) with hypopituitarism, with a mean age of 45.9 ± 1.7 yrs (range: 18-82; male: 57.9%). Results. Nonfunctional pituitary adenomas were presented in 205 pts (40.5%), congenital causes in 74 pts (14.6%), while acromegaly and prolactinomas were presented in 37 (7.2%) and 36 (7.0%) patients, respectively. Craniopharyngiomas were detected in 30 pts (5.9%), and head trauma due to trauma brain injury-TBI and subarachnoid hemorrhage-SAH in 27 pts (5.4%). Survivors of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and those with previous cranial irradiation were presented in the same frequency (18 pts, 3.5% each). Conclusion. The most common causes of hypopituitarism in our database are pituitary adenomas. Increased awareness of the other causes of pituitary dysfunction, such as congenital, head trauma, extrapituitary cranial irradiation, and infections, is the reason for a higher frequency of these etiologies of hypopituitarism in the presented database.

Abstract
AIMS The possible effect of vitamin D administration in humans on endothelial dysfunction (ED) still remains undetermined. The current meta-analysis was performed to evaluate if vitamin D could improve ED. METHODS Randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled clinical trials were identified by systematic search of the PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Web of Science and the Scopus data bases, as well as different reviews and clinical trials articles. A random effects model was used to calculate the pooled overall effect on flow-mediated dilation (FMD) linked to the vitamin D administration. Meta-regression and subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of study characteristics on the effect of vitamin D administration on FMD. RESULTS A total of eight studies with nine relevant study arms were identified. The obtained results of pooled analysis showed that vitamin D administration did not improve FMD (eight studies, 529 subjects; weighted mean difference (WMD): 0.96%, 95% CI: -1.24% to 2.06%; P = 0.09). This was probably due to significant heterogeneity in between included trials (I(2) = 84%, P < 0.00001). On the other hand, subgroup analysis demonstrated that vitamin D improved FMD in trials that lasted <16 weeks; if systolic blood pressure (SBP) was higher than 140 mmHg and in trials where diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was <80 mmHg. CONCLUSION Although the current evidence clearly demonstrates that in certain conditions vitamin D can improve ED, a larger number of clinical trials are needed to confirm this assumption to confirm or reject the final statement on this topic.

Abstract
AIMS Thiazolidinediones administration is assumed to be related with an improvement of endothelial dysfunction (ED); nevertheless, previous studies have been inconsistent. For this reason, the present meta-analysis was directed to estimate if thiazolidinediones were related to endothelial dysfunction improvement by using flow-mediated dilation (FMD) measurement. METHODS Literature search of the PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, and the Scopus databases was performed covering the period until July 01, 2015, for randomized clinical trials that investigated an influence of thiazolidinediones on FMD. For the calculation of the pooled overall effect, a random effect model was used. Meta-regression and subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of study characteristics on the effect of thiazolidinediones administration on FMD. RESULTS This meta-analysis included 16 studies with 812 subjects. The obtained results demonstrated an improvement of endothelial dysfunction measured with FMD (16 studies, 812 subjects; WMD: 2.4 %, 95 % CI = 1.1 to 3.69 %; p = 0.0003). The significant heterogeneity was noted (I (2) = 95 %, p < 0.00001). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that pioglitazone and rosiglitazone were able to improve FMD. Also, thiazolidinediones improved FMD if treatment was longer than 12 weeks and if patients were younger than 65 years. Additionally, a lipid profile was found to influence thiazolidinediones effect on FMD. CONCLUSION The results of this meta-analysis demonstrated that thiazolidinediones were able to improve FMD, which in clinical terms can be further translated to the improvement of an impaired endothelial function. Nevertheless, the link between FMD and its predictive clinical relevance still requires further clarification.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder with a high prevalence worldwide. Animal models of diabetes represent an important tool in diabetes investigation that helps us to avoid unnecessary and ethically challenging studies in human subjects, as well as to obtain a comprehensive scientific viewpoint of this disease. Although there are several methods through which diabetes can be induced, chemical methods of alloxan- and streptozotocin-induced diabetes represent the most important and highly preferable experimental models for this pathological condition. Therefore, the aim of this article was to review the current knowledge related to quoted models of diabetes, including to this point available information about mechanism of action, particular time- and dose-dependent protocols, frequent problems, as well as major limitations linked to laboratory application of alloxan and sterptozotocin in inducing diabetes. Given that diabetes is known to be closely associated with serious health consequences it is of fundamental importance that current animal models for induction of diabetes should be continuously upgraded in order to improve overall prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this pathological condition.

Abstract
Bradykinin (BK) plays an important role in different physiological processes including the general preservation and modulation of vascular systems. The present study was designed in order to examine the effect of BK on isolated rat femoral artery rings and to investigate the participation of intact endothelium, cyclooxygenase products, Ca2+ channels, Na+/K+–ATPase, and B2 kinin receptors in BK-induced action. Circular artery segments were placed in organ baths. The endothelium was mechanically removed from some arteries. Concentration–contraction curves for BK were obtained in the rings previously equilibrated at the basal tone. BK produced a concentration–dependent contraction, which was reduced by endothelial denudation. The BK–induced effect was almost completely inhibited by indomethacin (cyclooxygenase inhibitor) or OKY–046 (thromboxane A2–synthase inhibitor). Nifedipine (Ca2+ channel blocker), ouabain (Na+/K+–ATPase inhibitor), or HOE–140 (selective B2 kinin receptor antagonist) significantly reduced the BK–evoked effect. In conclusion, it can be proposed that BK produces concentration– and endothelium–dependent contractions of the isolated rat femoral artery, which is for the most part a consequence of B2 kinin receptor activation. Cyclooxygenase contractile products, especially thromboxane A2, play a significant role in this course of action. The transduction mechanism involved in the process of BK–induced femoral artery contraction include the activation of voltage–gated Ca2+ channels, and in a smaller extent Na+/K+–ATPase as well.
