Abstract
Thrombosis and bleeding are commonly observed in cancer patients, and their management is crucial for positive patient outcomes. A comprehensive, prophylactic, and therapeutic management of venous thrombosis should focus on identifying the patients who would benefit most from treatment to reduce mortality and minimize the risk of thrombosis recurrence without significantly increasing the risk of bleeding. Existing cancer scales provide valuable information for assessing the overall burden of cancer and guiding treatment decisions, but their ability to predict thrombotic and bleeding events remains limited. With increasing knowledge of the pathophysiology of cancer and the availability of advanced anticancer therapies, new risk factors for cancer-associated thrombosis and bleeding are being identified. In this report, we analyze the current literature and identify new risk factors for venous thrombosis and bleeding which are not included in routinely used risk scores. While some existing cancer scales partially capture the risk of thrombosis and bleeding, there is a need for more specific and accurate scales tailored to these complications. The development of such scales could improve risk stratification, aid in treatment selection, and enhance patient care. Therefore, further research and development of novel cancer scales focused on thrombosis and bleeding are warranted to optimize patient management and outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose The ABO blood type system is crucial for human blood transfusions. However, the relationships between ABO blood groups and diseases in the digestive system and vein have not been elucidated. We investigated the relationships between ABO blood groups and diseases in the digestive system and vein in this study. Patients and Methods A retrospective study on a Chinese population, including 1432 Crohn's disease (CD), 416 ulcerative colitis (UC), 1140 stomach cancer (SC), 841 colorectal cancer (CRC), 384 pancreatic cancer (PC), 520 liver cancer (LC), and 563 venous thrombosis (VT) patients, was performed. Furthermore, 896 healthy subjects were enrolled as normal controls (NC) in this study. The demographic characteristics of patients and NC were compared using the unpaired t-test and χ2 test. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between ABO blood groups and CD and VT. Results ABO blood groups distributions in UC, SC, CRC, PC, and LC patients did not differ from that of NC, but CD and VT patients had significant difference of ABO blood group distribution from that of NC (p = 0.015 and p = 0.002, respectively). Patients with CD and VT had considerably lower rates of type O blood (p = 0.011 and p = 0.001, respectively) and significantly higher rates of type AB blood (p = 0.013 and p = 0.022, respectively) than those with NC. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed the association of CD and VT with non-O blood types was still significant with a higher risk than with blood group O after adjusting for age and gender (OR = 1.355, 95% CI = 1.100-1.670, p = 0.004 and OR = 1.465, 95% CI = 1.131-1.903, p = 0.004, respectively). Conclusion ABO blood groups distributions in CD and VT patients significantly differed from that of NC. Non-O blood group could be a new predictor for CD and VT.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to determine the frequency of symptomatic central venous catheters-associated deep vein thrombosis (CVC-a DVT) among critically ill children with femoral vein implantation in our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and to compare the demographic factors, serum electrolyte levels, and types of the infusion treatments performed. A total of 215 patients aged 1 month to 18 years who had femoral CVC implanted between 2019 and 2021 were included in this study. The cases that were clinically symptomatic and had thrombosis diagnosed ultrasonography were accepted as CVC-a DVT (+), and the other cases were considered as CVC-a DVT (-). Of the total 215 cases, 57.2% (n = 123) were female and 42.8% (n = 92) were male. Catheters-associated deep vein thrombosis diagnosis were made in 9.8% of the cases (n = 21). The mean time to diagnose thrombosis in CVC-a DVT (+) cases was 8.33 ± 5.65 days. With regard to gender, age, blood type, intubation status, length of stay on mechanical ventilator, presence of extra hemodialysis catheter, acute and chronic disease status, number of days of PICU hospitalization, and Pediatric Risk of Mortality-3 scoring, no significant differences between CVC-a DVT (-) and CVC-a DVT (+) cases were observed (P > .05). The incidence of thrombosis in refugee cases was found to be significantly higher than in Turkish cases (P = .047; P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in baseline, mean, and peak glucose, sodium, and magnesium values and who received magnesium, blood product, inotrope, and 3% hypertonic saline (HTS) infusion (P > .05). No effect of serum glucose, sodium, and magnesium levels on the development of CVC-a DVT was found. Magnesium, blood product, inotrope, and 3% HTS infusion treatments have not been shown to have an effect on the development of CVC-a DVT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Western populations, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) risk has been found to be greater among individuals with non-O blood types than those with O blood type. However, the association has not been fully evaluated with respect to FUT2 (determining secretor status) and FUT3 (determining Lewis antigens) status, two biologically important genes in the expression of ABO blood groups with PDAC. METHODS We examined interactions in data from 8,027 cases and 11,362 controls in large pancreatic cancer consortia (PanScan I-III and PanC4) by using genetic variants to predict ABO blood groups (rs505922 and rs8176746), secretor status (rs601338), and Lewis antigens (rs812936, rs28362459, and rs3894326). Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the risk of PDAC adjusted for age and sex. We examined multiplicative interactions of ABO with secretor status and Lewis antigens by considering each product term between ABO and secretor and between ABO and Lewis antigens individually. RESULTS We found that the increased risk associated with non-O blood groups was somewhat stronger among secretors than nonsecretors [ORs, 1.28 (95% CI, 1.15-1.42) and 1.17 (95% CI, 1.03-1.32) respectively; Pinteraction = 0.002]. We did not find any interactions between ABO and Lewis antigens. CONCLUSIONS Our large consortia data provide evidence of effect modification in the association between non-O blood type and pancreatic cancer risk by secretor status. IMPACT Our results indicate that the association between ABO blood type and PDAC risk may vary by secretor status, but not by Lewis antigens.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have evaluated the association between ABO blood group and venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk in patients with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). However, it remains unclear whether ABO blood groups are associated with PICC-associated VTE risk. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of related studies to elucidate the potential role of ABO blood group as a risk factor for PICC-associated VTE. Methods All detectable case–control and cohort studies comparing the role of ABO blood group as a risk factor for PICC-associated VTE were collected for this analysis by searching PubMed, Embase, CNKI, Web of Science, and Wanfang. We conducted a meta-analysis of the eligible studies and computed the summary risk estimates with random or fixed effects models. Results A total of four studies involving 7,804 patients were included. Meta-analysis of the studies showed that the risk of PICC-associated VTE was significantly higher in blood types A [odds ratio (OR)=1.54, 95% CI=1.17–2.03), p=0.002], B (OR=2.35, 95% CI=1.71–3.23, p<0.0001), and AB (OR=2.55, 95% CI=1.68–3.88, p<0.0001) and lower in blood types O (OR=0.58, 95% CI=0.45–0.74, p<0.0001). Subgroup analysis based on ethnicity demonstrated that blood type O may be a genetic protective factor for PICC-associated VTE in Asians. Among Caucasians, individuals with blood types B and AB have a higher risk of PICC-associated VTE. Blood types A, B, and AB are risk factors for PICC-associated VTE in Asians. Conclusions Blood type O is associated with a decreased risk of PICC-associated VTE, especially in Asian populations. Moreover, blood types A, B, and AB are risk factors for PICC-associated VTE.

Abstract
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is common in patients with cancer. Although in the general population blood type non-O is associated with increased VTE risk, the impact of ABO blood type on risk of cancer-associated VTE has not been clarified. To determine the influence of ABO blood type on cancer-associated VTE risk, we conducted an analysis within the Vienna Cancer and Thrombosis Study, a prospective cohort study including patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent cancer observed for the primary outcome VTE. Restricted cubic spline analysis was performed and specific time-restricted subdistribution hazard ratios (SHR) were calculated to investigate the association between non-O blood type and VTE over time. One thousand, seven hundred and eight patients were included in the analysis (median follow-up time: 24 months; interquartile range: 10-24), and 151 patients developed VTE (8.8%). During the first 3 months of follow-up, there was no association between non-O blood type and VTE risk (SHR: 1.00; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60-1.67). Thereafter, non-O blood type was associated with a higher VTE risk (SHR: 1.79; 95% CI: 1.12-2.85). Furthermore, non-O blood type was associated with increased VTE risk in patients with intermediate and low thrombotic risk tumor types (SHR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.09-2.73) but not in very high-risk types (pancreatic, gastroesophageal, and brain cancer; SHR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.55-1.61). This association was weakened after adjustment for factor VIII. Non-O blood type is a time-dependent predictor of VTE in patients with cancer. It is associated with increased VTE risk beyond 3 months of follow-up and in patients with intermediate- and low-risk tumor types.

Abstract
The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) is considered a global catastrophe that has overwhelmed health care systems. Since initiation of the pandemic, identification of characteristics that might influence risk of infection and poor disease outcomes have been of paramount interest. Blood group phenotypes are genetically inherited characteristics whose association with certain infectious diseases have long been debated. The aim of this review is to identify whether a certain type of blood group may influence an individual’s susceptibility to SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and developing severe outcomes. Our review shows that blood group O protects individuals against SARS‐CoV‐2, whereas blood group A predisposes them to being infected. Although the association between blood groups and outcomes of COVID‐19 is not consistent, it is speculated that non‐O blood group carriers with COVID‐19 are at higher risk of developing severe outcomes in comparison to O blood group. The interaction between blood groups and SARS‐CoV‐2 infection is hypothesized to be as result of natural antibodies against blood group antigens that may act as a part of innate immune response to neutralize viral particles. Alternatively, blood group antigens could serve as additional receptors for the virus and individuals who are capable of expressing these antigens on epithelial cells, which are known as secretors, would then have a high propensity to be affected by SARS‐CoV‐2.

Abstract
Not all patients with severe hemophilia A (HA) respond optimally to a given dose of a given product. Within-individual variance in cross-over studies makes each patient unique in the response to each standard half-life (SHL) factor VIII (FVIII) product in pharmacokinetic (PK) terms. This hampers the prediction of efficacy when a SHL FVIII product is employed. PK data showing that half-lives of SHL rFVIII are unsatisfactory to achieve zero bleeding in individual HA patients provide the rationale for switching from SHL to extended half-life (EHL) products. However, not all subjects receiving prophylaxis with EHL products achieve zero bleeding, the most cogent objective of personalized prophylaxis. Known determinants of FVIII half-life (age, von Willebrand factor [VWF] levels, blood group) cumulatively account for one third of the total inter-individual variation in FVIII clearance in subjects with severe HA. Investigations into precision, and accuracy of laboratory measurement to be employed; newer pathways for the clearance of both free-FVIII and VWF-bound FVIII, and adequately powered studies on omics and phenotypic heterogeneity, are likely to provide additional information on the remaining two thirds of inter-individual variation in FVIII clearance in HA. Variability in the clinical response has also been documented in patients when FVIII activity is mimicked by fixed subcutaneous doses of the bispecific antibody emicizumab. National registries that collect PK data of available FVIII products and ad hoc information on the individual response to emicizumab should be encouraged, to establish newer standards of care and ease personalized clinical decisions to achieve zero bleeding.

Abstract
Numerous studies have reported significant associations between ABO blood group and risk of cardiovascular disease. These studies have consistently demonstrated that thrombotic risk is significantly reduced in individuals in blood group O. Nevertheless, the biological mechanisms through which ABO influences hemostasis have remained poorly understood. Exciting recent data have provided novel insights into how these ABO effects are modulated and have highlighted that ABO group significantly influences platelet plug formation at sites of vascular injury (primary hemostasis). In particular, ABO affects multiple aspects of von Willebrand factor (VWF) biology. In keeping with their reduced thrombotic risk, plasma VWF levels are ∼25% lower in healthy group O compared with healthy group non-O individuals. In addition, blood group O VWF demonstrates enhanced susceptibility to ADAMTS13 proteolysis. Finally, preliminary findings suggest that the interaction of group O VWF with platelets may also be reduced. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying these ABO effects on VWF have not been fully elucidated, it seems likely that they are mediated in large part by the ABO(H) carbohydrate structures that are carried on both the N- and O-linked glycans of VWF. Interestingly, ABO(H) determinants are also expressed on several different platelet surface glycoprotein receptors. Recent studies support the hypothesis that ABO group not only exerts major quantitative and qualitative effects on VWF, but also affect specific aspects of platelet function. Given the severe morbidity and the mortality associated with thrombotic disorders, defining the mechanisms underlying these ABO effects is not only of scientific interest, but also of direct clinical importance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been an interest in the relationship between ABO blood groups and infertility. Many studies have investigated the association of ABO blood groups with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), and outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART), with controversial results. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluating the association of ABO blood groups with DOR, OHSS, and outcomes of ART. RESULTS Thirteen studies performed between 2010 and 2018 were included in this meta-analysis. DOR, OHSS, live birth rate (LBR), clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), miscarriage rate (MR) were reported in 9, 2, 4, 3, 2 studies, respectively. The combined results showed similar risk of DOR among individuals with blood group A (RR, 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85, 1.13), B (RR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.76, 1.20), AB (RR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.76, 1.30), and non-O (RR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.79, 1.11) as compared to those with blood group O. Meta-analysis showed that the incidences of OHSS were similar in women with blood group A (RR, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.66, 1.66), B (RR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.46, 2.35), AB (RR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.10, 2.56), non-O (RR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.65, 1.57) with blood group O. As to the clinical outcomes, meta-analysis showed no difference in LBR among individuals with blood group A (RR, 1.27; 95% CI, 0.74, 2.17), B (RR, 1.47; 95% CI, 0.95, 2.29), AB (RR, 1.48; 95% CI, 0.76, 2.90), non-O (RR, 1.28; 95% CI, 0.83, 1.98) when compared to those with blood group O. Similarly, the results also found that there were no difference in CPR and MR between women with blood A (CPR: RR, 1.12), B (CPR: RR, 1.08), AB (CPR: RR, 1.05), non-O (CPR: RR, 1.05; MR: RR, 0.94) and blood group O. CONCLUSIONS ABO blood groups may not be associated with DOR, OHSS, LBR, CPR, and MR of ART. Infertility and ART outcomes are influenced by multiple factors. Blood groups should not be taken into account excessively during diagnosis and treatment of infertile women.

Abstract
ABO blood groups is a cheap and affordable test that can be immediately retrieved from COVID-19 patients at the diagnosis. There is increasing evidence that non-O blood groups have both higher susceptibility and higher severity of COVID-19 infections. The reason behind such relationship seems elusive. Regarding susceptibility, Non-O individuals have Anti-A antibodies which can prevent viral entry across ACE-2 receptors, moreover, Non-O individuals are at higher risk of autoimmunity, hypercoagulable state, and dysbiosis resulting in an augmented tendency for vascular inflammatory sequelae of COVID-19. We can conclude, on the diagnostic level, that ABO blood groups can be potentially used for risk stratification of affected COVID-19 patients, to anticipate the deterioration of patients at higher risk for complications. On a therapeutic level, plasma from normal O blood group individuals might potentially replace the use of convalescent serum for the treatment of COVID-19.

Abstract
Identification of risk factors for contracting and developing serious illness following infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is of paramount interest. Here, we performed a retrospective cohort analysis of all Danish individuals tested for SARS-CoV-2 between 27 February 2020 and 30 July 2020, with a known ABO and RhD blood group, to determine the influence of common blood groups on virus susceptibility. Distribution of blood groups was compared with data from nontested individuals. Participants (29% of whom were male) included 473 654 individuals tested for SARS-CoV-2 using real-time polymerase chain reaction (7422 positive and 466 232 negative) and 2 204 742 nontested individuals, accounting for ∼38% of the total Danish population. Hospitalization and death from COVID-19, age, cardiovascular comorbidities, and job status were also collected for confirmed infected cases. ABO blood groups varied significantly between patients and the reference group, with only 38.41% (95% confidence interval [CI], 37.30-39.50) of the patients belonging to blood group O compared with 41.70% (95% CI, 41.60-41.80) in the controls, corresponding to a relative risk of 0.87 (95% CI, 0.83-0.91) for acquiring COVID-19. This study identifies ABO blood group as a risk factor for SARS-CoV-2 infection but not for hospitalization or death from COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the potential relation between the ABO blood group and the risk of venous thrombosis in cancer patients with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). METHODS The patients who underwent PICC catheterization in Beijing Cancer Hospital from January 2018 to October 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The general information, disease diagnosis, catheterization situation, and complications were recorded for each patient. Further, the blood group status was identified using the hospital information systems. Logistic and Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to identify the risk factors for symptomatic PICC-related thrombosis. RESULTS Among the 2315 patients, 131 had symptomatic thrombosis after PICC catheterization. The incidence of symptomatic thrombosis was lower in patients with blood type O when compared with that in patients with blood types other than O. The history of venous thrombosis, tumor category, arm circumference, and insertion attempts are risk factors associated with the PICC-related venous thromboembolism (VTE). After multivariable adjustment, insertion attempts and the non-O blood type were observed to remain associated with thrombosis. CONCLUSION The risk of PICC-related thrombosis in patients with non-O blood type is significantly higher than that in patients with blood type O.

Abstract
Previous studies have highlighted marked inter‐individual variations in factor VIII (FVIII) clearance between patients with haemophilia (PWH). The half‐life of infused FVIII has been reported to vary from as little as 5.3 hours in some adult PWH, up to as long as 28.8 hours in other individuals. These differences in clearance kinetics have been consistently observed using a number of different plasma‐derived and recombinant FVIII products. Furthermore, recent studies have demonstrated that half‐life for extended half‐life (EHL‐) FVIII products also demonstrates significant inter‐patient variation. Since time spent with FVIII trough levels <1% has been shown to be associated with increased bleeding risk in PWH on prophylaxis therapy, this variability in FVIII clearance clearly has major clinical significance. Recent studies have provided significant novel insights into the cellular basis underlying FVIII clearance pathways. In addition, accumulating data have shown that endogenous plasma VWF levels, ABO blood group and age, all play important roles in regulating FVIII half‐life in PWH. Indeed, multiple regression analysis suggests that together these factors account for approximately 34% of the total inter‐individual variation in FVIII clearance observed between subjects with severe haemophilia A. In this review, we consider these and other putative modulators of FVIII half‐life, and discuss the biological mechanisms through which these factors impact upon FVIII clearance in vivo.

Abstract
Cytokines are essential regulatory components of the immune system, and their aberrant levels have been linked to many disease states. Despite increasing evidence that cytokines operate in concert, many of the physiological interactions between cytokines, and the shared genetic architecture that underlies them, remain unknown. Here, we aimed to identify and characterize genetic variants with pleiotropic effects on cytokines. Using three population-based cohorts (n = 9,263), we performed multivariate genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for a correlation network of 11 circulating cytokines, then combined our results in meta-analysis. We identified a total of eight loci significantly associated with the cytokine network, of which two (PDGFRB and ABO) had not been detected previously. In addition, conditional analyses revealed a further four secondary signals at three known cytokine loci. Integration, through the use of Bayesian colocalization analysis, of publicly available GWAS summary statistics with the cytokine network associations revealed shared causal variants between the eight cytokine loci and other traits; in particular, cytokine network variants at the ABO, SERPINE2, and ZFPM2 loci showed pleiotropic effects on the production of immune-related proteins, on metabolic traits such as lipoprotein and lipid levels, on blood-cell-related traits such as platelet count, and on disease traits such as coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
The ABH and Lewis antigens were among the first of the human red blood cell polymorphisms to be identified and, in the case of the former, play a dominant role in transfusion and transplantation. But these two therapies are largely twentieth-century innovations, and the ABH and related carbohydrate antigens are not only expressed on a very wide range of human tissues, but were present in primates long before modern humans evolved. Although we have learned a great deal about the biochemistry and genetics of these structures, the biological roles that they play in human health and disease are incompletely understood. This review and its companion, which appeared in a previous issue of Vox Sanguinis, will focus on a few of the biologic and pathologic processes which appear to be affected by histo-blood group phenotype. The first of the two reviews explored the interactions of two bacteria with the ABH and Lewis glycoconjugates of their human host cells, and described the possible connections between the immune response of the human host to infection and the development of the AB-isoagglutinins. This second review will describe the relationship between ABO phenotype and thromboembolic disease, cardiovascular disease states, and general metabolism.

Abstract
Elevated levels of coagulation factor VIII have been associated with increased risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). The role of Von Willebrand factor (VWF) in VTE is unclear. In this study, we investigated the association of raised levels of VWF and factor VIII in patients with VTE. 100 patients of VTE and 100 age and gender matched controls were tested for levels of VWF antigen, coagulation factor VIII:C, Protein C, Protein S, antithrombin, antiphospholipid antibodies and for the presence of Factor V Leiden mutation. The mean level of VWF was significantly higher amongst patients of VTE (177.3 IU/dl) when compared to controls (129.7 IU/dl) (P < 0.001). Similarly, the mean level of FVIII:C was significantly higher amongst patients of VTE (199.1 IU/dl) when compared to controls (145.2 IU/dl) (P < 0.001). On logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for FVIII:C, Protein S, factor V Leiden and trauma, the association of raised VWF with VTE remained significant (P = 0.001). Similarly higher levels of FVIII:C persisted to have an independent association with VTE (P = 0.004). Both, higher levels of VWF and FVIII:C levels, are independently associated with VTE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABO blood groups have been suggested to have a high correlation with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It has also been postulated that platelet indices, including mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), are very important in the development and progression of CVDs. However, despite these common associations with CVDs, as far as we know, there are no studies investigating platelet indices in ABO blood groups. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether platelet indices are associated with ABO blood groups. METHODS The study included 301 healthy volunteers (99 women and 202 men; mean age: 32.59 ± 7.52 years) whose blood groups were determined by the gel column method using agglutination techniques. Platelet indices were studied by an automated blood counter. RESULTS No considerable differences in age, gender, or Rh factors were observed among ABO blood groups. MPV was detected to be considerably lower in O and A blood group subjects than in AB and B blood group subjects. Similarly, PDW was significantly lower in O and A blood group subjects than in B blood group subjects. Additionally, MPV in the O blood group subjects was significantly lower than in the non-O blood group subjects. CONCLUSIONS Because MPV and PDW are used as markers of CVDs, individuals with O and A blood groups in this study may be considered to have a lower risk of CVDs than AB and B blood group subjects. However, prospective cohort studies involving a greater number of volunteers are needed to elucidate these relationships.

Abstract
Introduction ABO blood type A was reported to correlate with an increased risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in white patients with severe sepsis and major trauma compared with patients with other blood types. Information regarding ABO phenotypes and major outcomes in patients with ARDS is unavailable. The primary aim was to determine the relationship between ABO blood type A and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality in patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF). The secondary aim was to describe the association between ABO blood type A and ICU length of stay (LOS) in this study population. Methods In a multicenter, retrospective cohort study, we collected the clinical records of patients admitted from January 2012 to December 2014 in five ICUs of Northern Italy. We included adult white patients admitted to the ICU who were diagnosed with AHRF requiring mechanical ventilation. Results The electronic records of 1732 patients with AHRF were reviewed. The proportion of patients with ABO blood type A versus other blood types was 39.9% versus 60.1%. ICU mortality (25%) and ICU LOS (median [interquartile range], 5 [2–12] days) were not different when stratified by ABO blood type (ICU mortality, overall p value = 0.905; ICU LOS, overall p value = 0.609). SAPSII was a positive predictor of ICU mortality (odds ration [OR], 32.80; 95% confidence interval [CI], 18.80–57.24; p < 0.001) and ICU LOS (β coefficient, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.35–0.75; p < 0.001) at multivariate analyses, whereas ABO blood type did not predict ICU outcome when forced into the model. Conclusion ABO blood type did not correlate with ICU mortality and ICU LOS in adult patients with AHRF who were mechanically ventilated.

Abstract
PURPOSE Retrospective and cross-sectional studies suggested that non-O blood group may be associated with failures of in vitro fertilization (IVF), but data remain controversial. The aim of this observational cohort study was to prospectively evaluate the effect of non-O blood type on clinical outcomes of IVF. METHODS Women < 40 years who underwent IVF and had ABO blood type recorded as part of the routine workup were eligible. The primary study outcome was live birth. Secondary outcomes included spontaneous abortion, positive pregnancy test, and clinical pregnancy. RESULTS A total of 497 women with a mean age of 34.6 (standard deviation 3.2) years were included. The mean number of embryos transferred was 2.3 (standard deviation 0.6). The most common ABO blood types were O (n = 213, 42.9%) and A (n = 203, 40.8%), while 63 (12.7%) and 18 (3.6%) women had the B and AB blood types, respectively. Differences in live birth (21.8 vs. 24.3%, odds ratio [OR] 1.17; 95% confidence intervals [CI], 0.76 to 1.78), positive pregnancy test (37.9 vs. 36.6%, OR 0.96; 95% CI, 0.66 to 1.38), clinical pregnancy (35.1 vs. 33.8%, OR 0.95; 95% CI, 0.66 to 1.39), and spontaneous abortion (12.3 vs. 9.2%, OR 0.72; 95% CI, 0.41 to 1.29) between women with O and non-O blood type were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS In a prospective cohort study, we confirmed the lack of a significant association between non-O blood type and clinical outcomes of IVF. Further studies are needed to clarify whether non-O blood group has any prognostic relevance in women undergoing IVF.

Abstract
Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) has been associated to DVT recurrence, increased FVIII, inflammatory biomarker plasma levels, and persistence of vein obstruction. These same features have also been widely reported in non-O blood type subjects. Our aim was to investigate the correlation between the incidence of PTS and ABO blood types. Consecutive patients referred to the Department of Medicine of University of Padua between January 2004 and January 2012 following the diagnosis of a first episode of proximal DVT were enrolled. The presence of PTS was assessed via the Villalta scale at predefined time points (3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 months). Hazard ratio (HR) for PTS development was calculated in non-O (exposed) vs O blood (unexposed) type patients. Out of 671 eligible patients, 606 were enrolled. Overall, 192 (31.7%) patients developed PTS: 142 (34.5%) non-O and 50 (25.6%) O blood type patients. Individuals with non-O blood group were associated with a significantly higher risk to develop PTS (HR 1.53, 95% CI, 1.05-2.24; p = 0.028) than O group. Non-O blood type might be a risk factor for the development of PTS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between ABO blood group and upper limb venous thrombosis (VT) risk in patients with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). METHODS Single centre retrospective cohort study. A cohort of patients who underwent PICC insertion from September 2010 to August 2014 were followed up for symptomatic VT presentations diagnosed by ultrasound. Blood group status was identified from hospital information systems. RESULTS 2270 participants had 3020 PICCs inserted. There were 124 cases of symptomatic VT, an incident rate of 4% [95% confidence interval, CI (3-5%)]. Univariate analysis adjusting for the clustered sample showed that having chemotherapy, two or more previous PICCs, a larger catheter size, a diagnosis of cancer and having a blood group B were all associated with an increased risk of a VT. In the multivariate analysis, PICC diameter, cancer diagnosis and blood group B were all independently associated with increased risk of VT. CONCLUSION Patients undergoing PICC insertion with a blood group B appear to have a higher risk of VT, independent of risks attached to the PICC procedure and cancer diagnosis. Without any existing guidelines for PICC-related VT, this investigation creates a platform for further research to be conducted in order to establish guidelines. Advances in knowledge: Previous studies investigating VT risk associated with blood group status related to large heterogeneous populations. In this article, we look at patients specifically with PICC, which reduces the heterogeneity in the cohort. In addition, due to the substantial number of patients enrolled, we had a chance to perform multivariate analyses with statistical significance.

Abstract
Our study was aimed to investigate anesthetic effects of propofol in patients with different blood groups.A total of 72 participants were enrolled from patients arranged for surgeries of cholecystectomy, tonsillectomy, and spinal operation. Each blood group (A, B, AB, and O) contained 18 participants. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and bispectral index (BIS) were assayed with Philips monitor. These indexes were observed before propofol anesthesia (T0), and then were recorded when concentration of propofol was 1 μg/mL (T1), 2 μg/mL (T2), 3 μg/mL (T3), and 4 μg/mL (T4). The differences in MAP, HR, and BIS at T0 among groups were compared with the χ test. Multiple comparisons were adopted to calculate the differences in MAP, HR, and BIS between groups at T1, T2, T3, and T4.No significant differences in age, sex, and weight of all groups were found (P > .05). Before propofol anesthesia (T0), all the participants exhibited no differences in MAP, HR, and BIS (P > .05). Subsequently, we found obvious differences in ΔMAP, ΔHR, and ΔBIS between groups. The patients in the B blood group showed highest ΔMAP and ΔHR at each time point (P < .05 for both). As for ΔBIS, patients in A blood group exhibited highest value at T3 and T4 (P < .05).The blood group remarkably affects the anesthetic effects of propofol.

Abstract
ABO blood types are putatively associated with the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), but it is not proved in Chinese people. A large population of Han Chinese patients discharged from Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 2010 and June 2016 were retrospectively analyzed in a case-control study. A total of 1412 VTE patients were identified from 200,660 discharged Han Chinese patients, including 600 patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), 441 patients with pulmonary embolism, and 371 patients with both DVT and pulmonary embolism. The prevalence of non-O blood type was weakly but statistically higher in VTE patients compared with 199,248 non-VTE patients, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.362 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.205–1.540). Subgroup analysis showed that the OR for non-O blood type was still increased. It was greater in pre-hospital VTE (OR = 1.464) than that in hospital-acquired VTE (OR = 1.224), and greater in unprovoked VTE (OR = 1.859) than that in provoked VTE (OR = 1.227). The OR for non-O blood type decreased with age in subgroup analysis. These results suggest a weak but statistically significant correlation between non-O blood type and risk of VTE in Han Chinese people.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Essentials von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII (FVIII) levels are modulated by age and ABO status. The effect of aging and ABO blood type on VWF and FVIII was assessed in 207 normal individuals. Aging and ABO blood type showed combined and bidirectional influences on VWF and FVIII levels. Aging and ABO blood type influence VWF levels through both secretion and clearance mechanisms. SUMMARY Background The effect of aging and ABO blood type on plasma levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII (FVIII) have been widely reported; however, a comprehensive analysis of their combined effect has not been performed and the mechanisms responsible for the age-related changes have not been determined. Objectives To assess the influence of aging and ABO blood type on VWF and FVIII levels, and to evaluate the contribution of VWF secretion and clearance to the age-related changes. Methods A cross-sectional observational study was performed in a cohort of 207 normal individuals, whose levels of VWF, FVIII, VWF propeptide (VWFpp), VWFpp/VWF:Ag ratio and blood type A antigen content on VWF (A-VWF) were quantified. Results Aging and ABO blood type exerted interrelated effects on VWF and FVIII plasma levels, because the age-related increase in both proteins was significantly higher in type non-O individuals (β = 0.011 vs. 0.005). This increase with age in non-O subjects drove the differences between blood types in VWF levels, as the mean difference increased from 0.13 U/mL in the young to 0.57 U/mL in the old. Moreover, A-VWF was associated with both VWF antigen (β = 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.09, 0.50) and VWF clearance (β = -0.15; 95% CI, -0.25, -0.06). We also documented an effect of ABO blood type on VWF secretion with aging, as old individuals with blood type non-O showed higher levels of VWFpp (mean difference 0.29 U/mL). Conclusions Aging and ABO blood type have an interrelated effect on VWF and FVIII levels, where the effect of one is significantly influenced by the presence of the other.

Abstract
ABO blood type has previously been identified as a risk factor for thrombosis and pancreatic cancer (PC). The aim of the study is to demonstrate the associations between ABO blood type and other clinical factors with the risk of thromboembolism (TE) in patients with PC. We conducted a retrospective study in 670 patients with pathologically confirmed pancreatic adenocarcinoma at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Clinical information was retrieved from medical records. ABO blood type was determined serologically and/or genetically. Logistic regression models, Kaplan-Meier plot, log-rank test, and Cox proportional hazard regression models were employed in data analysis. The incidence of TE was 35.2% in 670 patients who did not have TE prior to cancer diagnosis. Pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) consisted 44.1% of the TE events. Non-O blood type, pancreatic body/tail tumors, previous use of antithrombotic medication, and obesity (body mass index >30 kg/m(2) ) were significant predictors for TE in general. Blood type A and AB, low hemoglobin level (≤ 10 g/dL), obesity, metastatic tumor, and pancreatic body/tail tumors were significant predictors for PE and DVT. Patients with metastatic tumor or pancreatic body/tail tumors had a much higher frequency of early TE events (≤ 3 months after cancer diagnosis); and early TE occurrence was a significant independent predictor for increased risk of death. These observations suggest that ABO non-O blood type is an independent predictor for TE in PC. A better understanding of the risk factors for TE in PC may help to identify patients who are most likely to benefit from prophylactic anticoagulation therapy.

Abstract
ABO blood groups are known to influence the plasma level of von Willebrand factor (VWF), but little is known about the relationship between ABO and coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). We analyzed the influence of ABO genotypes on VWF antigen, FVIII activity, and their quantitative relationship in 11,673 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. VWF, FVIII, and FVIII/VWF levels varied significantly among O, A (A1 and A2), B and AB subjects, and the extent of which varied between Americans of European (EA) and African (AA) descent. We validated a strong influence of ABO blood type on VWF levels (15.2%), but also detected a direct ABO influence on FVIII activity (0.6%) and FVIII/VWF ratio (3.8%) after adjustment for VWF. We determined that FVIII activity changed 0.54% for every 1% change in VWF antigen level. This VWF-FVIII relationship differed between subjects with O and B blood types in EA, AA, and in male, but not female subjects. Variations in FVIII activity were primarily detected at low VWF levels. These new quantitative influences on VWF, FVIII and the FVIII/VWF ratio help understand how ABO genotypes differentially influence VWF, FVIII and their ratio, particularly in racial and gender specific manners.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A and B blood group antigens are fucosylated carbohydrate present on human erythrocytes and body secretions. Their presence in body secretions depends on the expression of a dominant allele of secretor gene FUT2 and is correlated with susceptibility to various infectious and non-infectious diseases. We investigated the correlation of blood group and ABH antigen secretion with Helicobacter pylori infection and gastroduodenal symptoms and analysed the distribution of babA gene among ABH secretors and non-secretors. METHODS Two hundred and ninety patients who underwent gastroduodenal endoscopy during 2011 to 2012 participated. Gastric biopsy, saliva and blood samples were obtained from every patient. Gastric biopsies were subjected to rapid urease test and PCR for the detection of H. pylori and babA gene. Blood grouping and ABH antigens secretions were determined by Lewis blood group phenotyping and haemagglutination inhibition test. RESULTS 50.34% of patients were ABH antigen secretors and 45.51% non-secretors. Distribution analysis of blood group revealed that 40 blood group B, 67 blood group A 20 blood group O and 19 blood group AB patients secreted ABH antigens in saliva. Fifty-six blood group O, 19 blood group B, 32 blood group A and 17 blood group AB patients were non-secretors. Gastroduodenal complaints were common among non-secretors. Sixty-two percent of patients with a combination of duodenal ulcer and gastro-oesophageal reflux and 54% of patients with gastritis were non-secretors. Of 290 samples, 31.02% were positive for H. pylori. Thirty percent of these tested positive for babA gene; the majority belonged to non-secretor blood group O. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the infection of H. pylori is correlated with ABO blood groups and blood group antigens secretion in body fluids.

Abstract
ABO blood type is one of the most readily available laboratory tests, and serves as a vital determinant in blood transfusion and organ transplantation. The ABO antigens are expressed not only on red blood cell membranes, determining the compatibility of transfusion, but also on the surface of other human cells, including epithelium, platelet and vascular endothelium, therefore extending the research into other involvements of cardiovascular disease and postoperative outcomes. ABO blood group has been recognized as a risk factor of venous thrombosis embolism since the 1960’s, effects now understood to be related to ABO dependent variations are procoagulant factor VIII (FVIII) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) levels. Levels of vWF, mostly genetically determined, are strongly associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE). It mediates platelet adhesion aggregation and stabilizes FVIII in plasma. Moreover, many studies have tried to identify the relationship between ABO blood types and ischemic heart disease. Unlike the clear and convincing associations between VTE and ABO blood type, the link between ABO blood type and ischemic heart disease is less consistent and may be confusing. Other than genetic factors, ischemic heart disease is strongly related to diet, race, lipid metabolism and economic status. In this review, we’ll summarize the data relating race and genetics, including ABO blood type, to VTE, ischemic heart disease and postoperative bleeding after cardiac surgery.

Abstract
Elevated plasma factor VIII (FVIII) is increasingly recognized as an independent risk factor for thrombotic diseases. Our aim was to evaluate the association of increased plasma FVIII with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). Forty eight patients with non-puerperal, aseptic CVT were recruited for the study along with 50 age- and gender-matched, healthy controls. Blood samples were collected 3 months after the thrombotic event in patients. Plasma FVIII and fibrinogen levels were measured by a functional clot-based assay. Mean plasma FVIII was significantly higher in patients when compared to controls (235.40 ± 94.5 vs.121.2 ± 28.3IU/dl, p<0.001). Absence of significant elevation of fibrinogen suggested that the increase in FVIII was not due to an acute phase reaction. Elevated FVIII (>170 IU/dl) was associated with >18-fold increase in the risk for non-puerperal CVT (adjusted OR: 18.754, 95% CI 10.2-203.0, p<0.001). Non-O blood groups were more prevalent in CVT patients. Mean FVIII levels were higher in subjects with non-O blood group as compared to those with O blood group (155.16 ± 46.05 vs. 129.09 ± 40.06 IU/dl, p<0.001). Multivariate analysis with logistic regression showed that only elevated FVIII, and not blood group, was significantly associated with CVT. Our study demonstrates that elevated FVIII is an independent risk factor for non-puerperal CVT in an Indian population.

Abstract
Recent studies have demonstrated association between ABO blood system and thrombosis, indicating that individuals belonging to non-O blood groups (A, B or AB) present an increased risk of venous thrombosis, heart disease, and ischemic stroke (IS) as compared to O blood group carriers. In this study, we investigated the frequency of ABO blood group polymorphisms and its association with IS and peripheral arterial disease. Significant differences were observed for O1 (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.35-0.95, p < 0.05) and O2 (OR 3.47, 95% CI 1.15-10.28, p < 0.05) alleles among IS patients while significant differences were observed for B phenotype (26.3 vs 9.5%, OR 3.42, 95% CI 1.32-8.76, p = 0.01, patients vs controls, respectively) and alleles A1 (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.11-0.84, p < 0.05), O2 (OR 4.61, 95% CI 1.59-13.23, p < 0.01) and B (OR 3.42, 95% CI 1.62-7.13, p < 0.001) alleles for PAD patients. O1 allele was an independent variable (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.12-0.57, p < 0.001) for IS patients. These data suggest the relationship of non-O blood groups in pathogenesis of thrombosis events and a possible protective effect of O blood group.

Abstract
Aim. To highlight the apparently neglected role of erythrocyte antigens in the epidemiology of infectious diseases, especially HIV, with the prime objective of stimulating research in this area. Method. A literature search was performed on the PubMed for relevant papers from 1984 to 2013, the era covering active HIV research. This was achieved by using the phrases “erythrocyte blood groups HIV” (81 papers) or “red cell antigen, blood groups, and HIV” (60 papers). A manual Google Scholar search was done and supplemented by original papers referenced by various authors. However, the review was limited by the relative scarcity of papers on the subject, and only papers written in English were reviewed during the period October 2012 to September 2013. Results. Many communicable and noncommunicable diseases are associated with specific blood groups. Examples of these diseases are discussed in detail. HIV has been shown to bind to erythrocytes, and candidate erythrocyte-binding molecules and mechanisms are also discussed. Moreover, erythrocyte-HIV binding is associated with increased viral infectivity, thus, underscoring the need to study this phenomenon and its implications for HIV epidemiology. Conclusion. Erythrocyte antigens may be important in the pathogenesis and epidemiology of many diseases, including HIV.

Abstract
The role of ABO blood type as a risk factor for recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with a first unprovoked VTE who complete oral anticoagulation therapy is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine if non-OO blood type is a risk factor for recurrent VTE in patients with a first unprovoked VTE who completed 5-7 months of anticoagulant therapy. In an ongoing cohort study of patients with unprovoked VTE who discontinued oral anticoagulation after 5-7 months of therapy, six single nucleotide polymorphisms sites were tested to determine ABO blood type using banked DNA. The main outcome was objectively proven recurrent VTE. Mean follow-up for the cohort was 4.19 years (SD 2.16). During 1,553 patient-years of follow-up, 101 events occurred in 380 non-OO patients (6.5 events per 100 patient years; 95% CI 5.3-7.7) compared to 14 events during 560 patient years of follow-up in 129 OO patients (2.5 per 100 patient years; 95% CI 1.2-3.7), the adjusted hazard ratio was 1.98 (1.2-3.8). In conclusion, non-OO blood type is associated with a statistically significant and clinically relevant increased risk of recurrent VTE following discontinuation of anticoagulant therapy for a first episode of unprovoked VTE.

Abstract
Several studies have demonstrated that non-O blood groups subjects present an increased VTE risk as compared to those carrying O blood group. The aim of this study was to investigate the ABO blood groups influence on factor VIII (FVIII) activity, von Willebrand factor (VWF), and ADAMTS13 plasma levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Patients undergoing HD (N=195) and 80 healthy subjects (control group) were eligible for this cross-sectional study. The ABO blood group phenotyping was performed by the reverse technique. FVIII activity was measured through coagulometric method, and VWF and ADAMTS13 antigens were assessed by ELISA. FVIII activity and VWF levels were significantly higher and ADAMTS13 levels was decreased in HD patients, as compared to healthy subjects (P < 0.001, in three cases). HD patients carrying non-O blood groups showed a significant increase in FVIII activity (P = 0.001) and VWF levels (P < 0.001) when compared to carriers of O blood group. However, no significant difference was observed in ADAMTS13 levels (P = 0.767). In the control group, increased in FVIII activity (P = 0.001) and VWF levels (P = 0.002) and decreased in ADAMTS13 levels (P = 0.005) were observed in subjects carrying non-O blood groups as compared to carriers of O blood group.Our data confirmed that ABO blood group is an important risk factor for increased procoagulant factors in plasma, as FVIII and VWF. Admitting the possible role of kidneys in ADAMTS13 synthesis or on its metabolism, HD patients were not able to increase ADAMTS13 levels in order to compensate the increase of VWF levels mediated by ABO blood groups. Considering that non-O blood groups constitute a risk factor for thrombosis, it is reasonable to admit that A, B and AB HD patients need a careful and continuous follow-up in order to minimize thrombotic events.

Abstract
The antigens of the ABO system (A, B, and H determinants, respectively) consist of complex carbohydrate molecules. It has been known for nearly half a century that the ABO blood group exerts a major influence on plasma levels of the von Willebrand factor (VWF)-factor VIII (FVIII) complex and that normal group O individuals have significantly lower levels of VWF and FVIII than do non-O individuals. As a consequence, several investigators have studied the association between ABO blood group and the risk of developing bleeding or thrombotic events. A number of epidemiological studies have also analyzed the biologic relevance of this interaction by assessing whether the ABO blood group could influence human longevity through the regulation of VWF-FVIII plasma levels. In this review, the molecular mechanisms by which the ABO blood group determines plasma VWF and consequently, FVIII levels, the possible clinical implications, and the current knowledge on the association between the ABO blood group and the risk of developing certain cancers will be reviewed.

Abstract
Risk factors for deep-vein thrombosis have been shown not to be always the same as for pulmonary embolism. A well-known example is the factor V Leiden (FVL) paradox: the FVL mutation poses a clearly higher risk for deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) than for pulmonary embolism. We aimed to expand this paradox and therefore present risk estimates for several established risk factors for DVT and pulmonary embolism separately. When such separate risk estimates could not be retrieved from the literature, we calculated these risks in our own data, a large population-based case-control study on venous thrombosis (the MEGA study). Our results showed that the FVL paradox can be broadened (ie, the risk factors oral contraceptive use, pregnancy, puerperium, minor leg injuries, and obesity have an effect comparable with FVL). Furthermore, we found that pulmonary conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and sickle cell disease, were risk factors with an opposite effect: a higher risk of pulmonary embolism, but little or no effect on DVT. These findings suggest that pulmonary embolism and DVT may not always have the same etiology, and encourage unraveling this phenomenon in further studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High von Willebrand factor (VWF) plasma levels are associated with an increased risk of stroke. VWF levels are strongly heritable. A previous meta-analysis of five large genome-wide association studies identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within eight genetic loci as determinants of VWF levels. Whether these SNPs are associated with stroke risk is not known. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between genetic determinants of VWF levels and stroke risk. METHODS The study was part of the Rotterdam Study, a large population-based cohort study among subjects aged ≥ 55 years. A total of 5763 participants for whom DNA was available, and who were free of stroke at baseline, were eligible for analysis. VWF antigen (VWF:Ag) levels were measured in 3379 eligible participants. Within each of the eight loci, one top SNP was defined. The association between the eight SNPs and the risk of stroke was analyzed. Then, a genetic score, based on these eight SNPs, was constructed, and its total contribution to VWF plasma levels and stroke risk was investigated. RESULTS None of the eight SNPs was individually associated with stroke risk. A higher genetic score was significantly associated with a higher VWF:Ag level, but was not associated with an increased risk of stroke. CONCLUSION Eight SNPs that strongly determine VWF levels are not associated with stroke risk, either individually, or combined in a genetic score.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with thrombosis of the placenta and an increased risk of subsequent vascular disease in the mother and fetus. The products of interactions between ABO(H), Lewis and Secretor genes are also associated with thrombosis and vascular disease risk. OBJECTIVES/METHODS A prospective case-control study of mothers with a severe FGR pregnancy (cases, n = 128; controls, n = 288) was performed to determine whether FGR is associated with particular maternal blood groups. RESULTS No association with ABO(H) status was observed, but FGR was more common in maternal secretors (odds ratio [OR] 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-2.69) and consequently in those mothers expressing Le(b) on their red cells (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.15-2.83), with a reduced risk in non-secretors and those expressing Le(a). Given the association between blood groups and both activated protein C resistance (APCR) and von Willebrand factor (VWF) levels, post hoc pilot studies on first-trimester APCR and VWF antigen levels and blood group genotypes were performed. No relationship with Lewis or Secretor was observed. Despite this, lower first-trimester VWF levels were observed in pregnancies subsequently complicated by FGR. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study reporting a relationship between maternal Secretor/Lewis status and FGR. A link between blood groups and FGR is plausible, as both are associated with cardiovascular disease. We observed no relationship between Lewis/Secretor status and VWF or APCR, but this should be confirmed in a larger study. Thus, the mechanism whereby Secretor and/or Lewis influences FGR is unknown.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with severe aortic valve stenosis have a markedly reduced platelet function as measured by a prolonged collagen adenosine diphosphate closure time (CADP-CT) determined by the platelet function analyzer PFA-100. We hypothesized that such patients may benefit from desmopressin when they present with prolonged CADP-CT due to the specific action of desmopressin on von Willebrand factor (VWF) and CADP-CT. METHODS In this double-blind, randomized placebo controlled trial, 43 patients undergoing aortic valve replacement (due to severe aortic valve stenosis with CADP-CT>170 seconds) were given desmopressin 0.3 μg/kg or saline intravenously after induction of anesthesia. Measurement of CADP-CT, factor VIII activity, von Willebrand factor antigen, GpIb binding activity, ristocetin cofactor activity, collagen-binding activity, and multimers were performed after induction of anesthesia, one hour after desmopressin infusion, and 24 hours postoperatively. RESULTS In the majority of patients, baseline values of von Willebrand factor related indices were normal, but increased one hour after infusion of desmopressin by 73% to 90% as compared with placebo. Selective loss of high molecular weight multimers was seen only in a minority of patients. The CADP-CT was greater than 170 seconds in 92% of screened patients, and desmopressin shortened CADP-CT by 48% versus baseline and reduced postoperative blood loss by 42% (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Prolonged CADP-CT indicates platelet dysfunction in severe aortic valve stenosis, and can guide the use of desmopressin as an effective prohemostatic agent in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis.

Abstract
ABO(H) antigens are expressed on red cells and on von Willebrand factor. An association between groups other than O and thrombosis exists: an effect that is predominantly mediated by von Willebrand factor. Overall, the risk of venous thrombosis associated with non-O has been estimated at 1.75-fold, with a higher risk (∼2.4-fold) in those with the least O(H) antigen (a combined group of A1A1/A1B/BB). Preliminary evidence also suggests that blood group may influence the venous thromboembolism risk associated with factor V Leiden. Overall, ABO(H) has a more modest effect on arterial disease, with a consistent effect observed in peripheral vascular disease and no influence evident with angina. A modest effect on myocardial infarction and stroke has been reported in some but not all studies. The potential mechanisms whereby blood group influences thrombosis, the limitations of current evidence and the current and future role of blood groups in identifying those at risk of arterial and venous disease is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Neonates undergoing exchange transfusion require <5-day-old red cells suspended in plasma. This study assesses the effect of replacing the saline, adenine, glucose and mannitol (SAGM) of prion reduced (P-Capt) red cells with either methylene blue-treated plasma (MBTFFP) or OctaplasLG to reduce the risk of variant Creutzfelt-Jakob disease transmission. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty leucoreduced red cell units in SAGM were prion reduced on day 1. The SAGM was replaced by MBTFFP (n=10) or OctaplasLG (n=10). The units were irradiated and stored at 4°C for 24 h. A further 20 units were stored for 5 days before being processed as above. Haemolysis (%), potassium, ATP, 2,3-DPG and plasma proteins were measured. RESULTS Haemolysis remained low (≤0·16%). Following irradiation and storage, red cells in both types of plasma showed similar changes in potassium and ATP concentrations. The 2,3-DPG concentrations were well maintained although lower in red cells in OctaplasLG compared with those in MBTFFP (4·79 vs. 6·83 μmoles/g Hb on day 6). MBTFFP contained lower concentrations of fibrinogen, FV and FVIII. In OctaplasLG, alpha-2-antiplasmin was approximately 0·4 U/ml lower than in MBTFFP. After 24 h at 4°C, free protein S in OctaplasLG fell from 0·82 to 0·57 IU/ml. Other plasma proteins, in both types of plasma, were stable. CONCLUSIONS Red cells in both types of plasma demonstrated similar storage characteristics. The plasma proteins, except protein S in OctaplasLG, were stable over 24 h at 4°C in both types of plasma, and low FVIII concentrations were noted in the MBTFFP (group O) units used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjects with non-O ABO blood group alleles have increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Glycosyltransferase activity is greater for the A(1) versus A(2) variant, whereas O01 and O02 variants are nonfunctioning. We hypothesized: 1) A(1) allele would confer greater risk than A(2) allele, 2) protective effect of the O allele would be equivalent for O01 and O02 variants, 3) secretor phenotype would modify the association with risk. METHODS We determined ABO variants and secretor phenotype from single nucleotide polymorphisms in ABO and FUT2 genes in 1,533 cases and 1,582 controls from 12 prospective cohort studies. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) for pancreatic cancer were calculated using logistic regression. RESULTS An increased risk was observed in participants with A(1) but not A(2) alleles. Compared with subjects with genotype O/O, genotypes A(2)/O, A(2)/A(1), A(1)/O, and A(1)/A(1) had ORs of 0.96 (95% CI, 0.72-1.26), 1.46 (95% CI, 0.98-2.17), 1.48 (95% CI, 1.23-1.78), and 1.71 (95% CI, 1.18-2.47). Risk was similar for O01 and O02 variant O alleles. Compared with O01/O01, the ORs for each additional allele of O02, A(1), and A(2) were 1.00 (95% CI, 0.87-1.14), 1.38 (95% CI, 1.20-1.58), and 0.96 (95% CI, 0.77-1.20); P, O01 versus O02 = 0.94, A(1) versus A(2) = 0.004. Secretor phenotype was not an effect modifier (P-interaction = 0.63). CONCLUSIONS Among participants in a large prospective cohort consortium, ABO allele subtypes corresponding to increased glycosyltransferase activity were associated with increased pancreatic cancer risk. IMPACT These data support the hypothesis that ABO glycosyltransferase activity influences pancreatic cancer risk rather than actions of other nearby genes on chromosome 9q34.
