Abstract
To evaluate the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and linear growth in children, and determine factors associated with compromised linear growth in children with AD. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted. Databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane) were searched from inception to June 2024 for articles that reported a quantitative relationship between AD and linear growth in children (< 18 years old). Quality of included articles was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools while quality of evidence in these studies was evaluated using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. Fourteen studies (comprising 50,146 patients with AD) were included. Seven studies reported a strong positive or positive association between AD and reduced height standard deviation score (SDS) in children; the others reported no association. Only 3 studies had moderate quality of evidence, all of which reported an association between AD and poorer height SDS; the remaining 11 studies scored low in quality of evidence. Three studies reported the impact of AD on height to be transient. Secondary analysis showed AD severity, earlier AD onset, sleep disruption and, food restriction, to be risk factors for linear growth impairment in patients with AD. Topical steroid use was not associated with shorter stature in patients with AD. Conclusion: Current evidence on the association between childhood AD and poor linear growth is weak and inconsistent. However, patients with more severe AD, earlier disease onset, poorer sleep quality and higher nutritional restrictions appear more susceptible to linear growth impairment. What is known? • There is inconsistent evidence of the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and linear growth in children in current literature, with some studies suggesting that AD may negatively impact linear height while other studies do not report similar associations. What is new? • There is no strong association between AD in childhood and poorer linear growth. • There may be a transient slowing of linear growth in children with AD, mimicking constitutional growth delay. • Children with severe AD, earlier disease onset, poorer sleep quality and nutritional restrictions may be at risk of more significant linear growth impairment. • Topical steroid use does not appear to contribute to shorter height in children with AD.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin condition that significantly affects patients' lives and imposes both economic and non-economic burdens. The precise societal and individual consequences of AD remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to characterize AD in Portuguese patients and assess its personal, familial, and societal implications, including health status and quality of life. The research, conducted from June 2019 to January 2020, involved 204 confirmed AD patients in Portugal, who completed a 70-question questionnaire. Results show that, on average, patients experienced a two-year delay in diagnosis, with two-thirds having allergic comorbidities. Late-onset AD (after age 20) was found to be correlated with worsening symptoms post-diagnosis. Globally, patients reported substantial effects on health, quality of life, and mental well-being. Effects include significant levels of anxiety, frustration and sleep disorders. Severe AD correlated with more suffering and reduced perceived health, indicating a link between disease severity and quality of life. Remarkably, despite questionable effectiveness, 92% of severe AD patients were prescribed antihistamines, while only 19% received biological treatments. In Portugal, delayed AD diagnosis hinders timely treatment, and despite its profound impact and high comorbidity rates, AD patients tend to remain undertreated. Recognizing the personal and societal repercussions is crucial for enhancing care, contributing to improving QoL, social functioning and global well-being.

Abstract
Introduction:A. truncatum Bunge (Sapindaceae or formerly Aceraceae) is a tall deciduous tree native to China. Traditionally, the leaves of A. truncatum are decocted and used by Chinese Mongolians, Koreans, and Tibetans to treat skin itching, dry cracks, and other skin ailments, which indicates A. truncatum leaves may have a potential inhibitory effect on various skin inflammations.Methods: To examine the protective effect against skin inflammations of A. truncatum leaf extract (ATLE), an in vitro dermatitis model was established using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SLS)-induced HaCaT cells. The anti-inflammatory effect of ATLE was evaluated by analyzing cell viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels.Results: Orthogonal experiments showed that the pretreatment with ATLE can reduce the IL-6 levels, PGE2 levels, and apoptosis increased in SLS-stimulated HaCaT cells, which indicates that ATLE has positive efficacy for dermatitis. Furthermore, three flavonoid compounds kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside, quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, kaempferol-3,7-di-O-α-L-rhamnoside, and 1,2,3,4,6-Penta-O-galloyl-β-D-glucopyranose (PGG) were isolated and identified. Among them, kaempferol-3,7-di-O-α-L-rhamnoside was isolated from this plant for the first time. These compounds have been proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect. They may contribute to the efficacy of A. truncatumin treating skin inflammation.Discussion: The results revealed that ATLE has the potential to be used as an additive in various skin care products to prevent skin inflammations and may be incorporated in formulations for topical application as a therapeutic approach against dermatitis.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common presenting complaint by children and their caretakers to their primary care providers. On testing, children with AD frequently exhibit positive food-specific IgE levels in the absence of immediate allergic reactions. Misinterpretation of these false positive tests can lead to unnecessary food avoidance, which can have tremendous psychosocial, economic and nutritional consequences and, in some cases, facilitate the development of an immediate hypersensitivity to the food. We present a child with persistent AD who underwent broad testing that led to unnecessary food avoidance resulting in Vitamin D deficiency, growth failure and the development of an IgE-mediated food allergy. This case underscores the need for caution by primary care clinicians in using food avoidance diets as a treatment for AD and the importance of limiting allergy testing to foods only when the clinical history indicates an immediate hypersensitivity reaction.

Abstract
Adverse food reactions include immune-mediated food allergies and non-immune-mediated intolerances. However, this distinction and the involvement of different pathogenetic mechanisms are often confused. Furthermore, there is a discrepancy between the perceived vs. actual prevalence of immune-mediated food allergies and non-immune reactions to food that are extremely common. The risk of an inappropriate approach to their correct identification can lead to inappropriate diets with severe nutritional deficiencies. This narrative review provides an outline of the pathophysiologic and clinical features of immune and non-immune adverse reactions to food-along with general diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Special emphasis is placed on specific nutritional concerns for each of these conditions from the combined point of view of gastroenterology and immunology, in an attempt to offer a useful tool to practicing physicians in discriminating these diverging disease entities and planning their correct management. We conclude that a correct diagnostic approach and dietary control of both immune- and non-immune-mediated food-induced diseases might minimize the nutritional gaps in these patients, thus helping to improve their quality of life and reduce the economic costs of their management.

Abstract
Globally, the prevalence of Atopic dermatitis (AD) is significantly increasing and affecting around 20% of population including children. Complex interactions amongst abnormality in epidermal barrier function, environment, infectious agents and immunological defects are considered as key factors in the pathogenesis of AD. Although the role of oxidative stress has been studied in some skin diseases, investigation of the same in AD is intermittent. Calcineurin inhibitors and/or topical corticosteroids are currently available; however, it causes atrophy of the skin, burning sensation, and systemic side effects which leads to poor patient compliance. These limitations provoke the strong need to develop an innovative approach in managing AD. Nanomaterials for effective drug delivery to skin conditions such as AD have attracted a lot of attention owing to its ability to encapsulate, protect, and release the cargo at the diseased skin site. However, there are lots of unmet challenges especially in terms of development of non-toxic formulations and clinical translation of established nanomedicines in the form of accessible products. Numerous formulations have emerged as carrier for poorly soluble and permeable drugs, viz., lipidic, polymeric, metal, silica, liposomes, hydrocarbon gels and this field is evolving. This review is intended to provide an insight incidences associated with pathophysiology of AD and challenges with existing treatments of AD. Focus is kept on reviewing current development and emerging nanomedicines for effective treatment of AD. The review also inculcates merits of several nanomedicines in overcoming challenges of existing products and its future implications.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease with an incompletely understood etiopathogenesis. With a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, AD has attracted the interest of many research studies aiming to investigate the complex cellular and molecular mechanisms and to identify new therapeutic pathways. Various studies have focused on psycho-immunology, emphasizing the involvement of stress, defined as a general response of the body to external or internal challenges to the AD pathology. Factors like lifestyle and leisure activities may change the behavior of immune cells in AD with a strong impact on the evolution of the disease. Moreover, the poor adherence of AD patient to standard treatment approach has led to the necessity to combine different therapies in the field of complementary and alternative medicine. Although there are still not enough data to conclude that adjuvant therapies are effective in a conventional sense, there are already promising results suggesting that alternative therapeutic strategies could be a main subject of further research.

Abstract
The Italian Consensus Conference on clinical management of atopic dermatitis in children reflects the best and most recent scientific evidence, with the aim to provide specialists with a useful tool for managing this common, but complex clinical condition. Thanks to the contribution of experts in the field and members of the Italian Society of Pediatric Allergology and Immunology (SIAIP) and the Italian Society of Pediatric Dermatology (SIDerP), this Consensus statement integrates the basic principles of the most recent guidelines for the management of atopic dermatitis to facilitate a practical approach to the disease. The therapeutical approach should be adapted to the clinical severity and requires a tailored strategy to ensure good compliance by children and their parents. In this Consensus, levels and models of intervention are also enriched by the Italian experience to facilitate a practical approach to the disease.

Abstract
Food allergy in atopic dermatitis (AD) is debatable from decades. Role of diet in the cause and treatment of AD is controversial and is not well-defined. Allergists and pediatricians are convinced about the food allergy in AD whereas many dermatologists are contrary for this. However, there are studies in the Indian and western literature supporting the evidence that elimination diet may improve the severe type of AD. There is increasing awareness and lot of misconception among caregivers about food allergy and hence careful understanding about this concept is necessary to counsel parents. Recent evidence-based literature suggests avoidance of proven food allergens in AD could be beneficial in moderate to severe type of AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Children with atopic dermatitis (AD) have a higher risk for development of food allergies. The objective of this study was to examine incidence of food allergy development in infants with AD and the predictive value of food-antigen-specific immunoglobulin E measurements. METHODS This trial examined the long-term safety and efficacy of pimecrolimus cream 1% in >1000 infants (3-18 months) with mild-to-severe AD without a history of food allergy. Food allergy development was followed throughout a 36-month randomized double-blind phase followed by an open-label (OL) phase up to 33 months. Additionally, sIgE for cow's milk, egg white, peanut, wheat, seafood mix, and soybean was measured by ImmunoCAP at baseline, end of the double-blind phase, and end of OL phase. RESULTS By the end of the OL phase, 15.9% of infants with AD developed at least 1 food allergy; allergy to peanut was most common (6.6%), followed by cow's milk (4.3%) and egg white (3.9%). Seafood, soybean, and wheat allergies were rare. Levels of sIgE for milk, egg, and peanut increased with severity of AD, as determined by Investigator's Global Assessment score. We assigned sIgE decision points for the 6 foods and tested their ability to predict definite food allergy in this population. Positive predictive values for published and newly developed sIgE decision points were low (<0.6 for all values tested). CONCLUSIONS In a large cohort of infants at risk for development of food allergy, sIgE levels were not clinically useful for predicting food allergy development.

Abstract
Food allergy has an increasing prevalence in the general population and in Italy concerns 8 % of people with allergies. The spectrum of its clinical manifestations ranges from mild symptoms up to potentially fatal anaphylactic shock. A number of patients can be diagnosed easily by the use of first- and second-level procedures (history, skin tests and allergen specific IgE). Patients with complex presentation, such as multiple sensitizations and pollen-food syndromes, frequently require a third-level approach including molecular diagnostics, which enables the design of a component-resolved sensitization profile for each patient. The use of such techniques involves specialists' and experts' skills on the issue to appropriately meet the diagnostic and therapeutic needs of patients. Particularly, educational programs for allergists on the use and interpretation of molecular diagnostics are needed.

Abstract
Background It is well known that atopic dermatitis (AD) is related to food hypersensitivity, although its prevalence varies among several studies according to age group, severity, country, survey time, and test method. Objective To examine the prevalence and status of food hypersensitivity among childhood AD patients in Korea. Methods A total of 95 patients were enrolled in the study. The history of food hypersensitivity was collected by interviews. The severity of AD was evaluated by eczema area and severity index (EASI). We took blood samples to measure serum total and food-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. Based on the histories and serum IgE levels, open oral food challenge (OFC) testing was performed to confirm food hypersensitivity. Results Forty-two (44.2%) of the 95 AD patients had histories of food hypersensitivity. They reported that the most common suspicious foods were egg (n=13, 13.7%), pork (n=9, 9.5%) and cow milk (n=8, 8.4%). The mean EASI score was 16.05±9.76. Thirty-nine (41.1%) of the 95 patients showed elevated serum food-specific IgE levels. The specific IgE levels were elevated for egg (n=17, 17.9%), milk (n=12, 12.6%), peanut (n=10, 10.5%) and wheat (n=8, 8.4%). Fifty-one (53.8%) of 95 patients underwent open OFC, and only 7 (13.7%) of these patients showed positive reactions. Conclusion The overall prevalence of food hypersensitivity in patients with childhood AD in Korea was 8.3% (7/84). The most common foods causing food hypersensitivity were egg and milk. Among the foods causing hypersensitivity, AD patients in Korea often underestimated peanut, while they overestimated pork.

Abstract
The interplay between atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy is complex and subject to significant misconceptions both by the general public and the medical community. Childhood AD is a very prevalent disorder. In its moderate and severe forms, AD is a challenging disorder to manage from the perspective of the child, parent and treating doctor. As AD is one of the disease manifestations of atopy, it is unsurprising that many children with AD also have a coexisting IgE-mediated food allergy. It is a common misconception that food allergy is causal in the setting of AD. However, in a proportion of sufferers, food allergy does play a role in triggering or exacerbating pre-existing AD by immune-mediated mechanisms and potentially by non-immune mechanisms. It is, therefore, important to differentiate causality, co-existent disease and disease modifiers in this context. This paper seeks to clarify the role of food allergy in childhood AD, and to outline a rational framework for the diagnosis and approach to food allergy in the context of the management of a child with problematic AD.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic or chronically relapsing, multifactorial skin disease that mainly occurs in children but affects also adults. AD usually begins early in life and often concerns people with a personal or family history of asthma and allergic rhinitis. AD is characterized by eczematous changes in the epidermis and originates from a late, T-cell mediated reaction associated to the formation and production of memory T-cell of TH2 type, occurrence of homing receptor at skin level and cutaneous lymphocyte-associated (CLA) antigens. Extrinsic or allergic AD, but not intrinsic AD, shows high total serum IgE levels and the presence of specific IgE for environmental and food allergens. A pivotal role in the pathogenesis of AD is played by filaggrin, a protein contained in the granular layer of the epidermis regulating the aggregation of keratin filaments. Mutation in the filaggrin gene causes decreased barrier function of the corny layers of the epidermis. This favours the enter through the skin of environmental allergens, especially the house dust mite, that further facilitates such entering by the proteolytic activity of its major allergen Der p 1. In fact, recent advances suggest that the dust mite, more than foods, is the major cause of allergic AD. As far as the causal diagnosis of AD is concerned, there is notable evidence supporting the capacity of the atopy patch test (APT) to reproduce the pathophysiologic events of AD. This makes APT a valuable diagnostic tool for AD.

Abstract
The negative impact of atopic dermatitis (AD) often extends beyond the skin. Children with AD experience increased rates of infectious, mental health, and allergic diseases compared to their non-atopic peers. The mechanisms underlying these associations remain elusive. New insights from genetic and epidermal research pinpoint the skin barrier as a primary initiator of AD. Epicutaneous sensitization represents an intriguing new model which links a disrupted skin barrier to the later development of IgE-mediated diseases in patients with AD. Recent epidemiological studies have identified new comorbidities linked to AD as well, including several mental health disorders and obesity. This manuscript reviews the recent literature regarding both classic and newly described AD comorbidities.

Finally, because patients frequently confuse nonallergic food reactions, such as food intolerance, with food allergies, there is an unfounded belief among the public that food allergy prevalence is higher than it truly is. In response to these concerns, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, working with 34 professional organizations, federal agencies, and patient advocacy groups, led the development of clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of food allergy. These Guidelines are intended for use by a wide variety of health care professionals, including family practice physicians, clinical specialists, and nurse practitioners. The Guidelines include a consensus definition for food allergy, discuss comorbid conditions often associated with food allergy, and focus on both IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated reactions to food. Topics addressed include the epidemiology, natural history, diagnosis, and management of food allergy, as well as the management of severe symptoms and anaphylaxis. These Guidelines provide 43 concise clinical recommendations and additional guidance on points of current controversy in patient management. They also identify gaps in the current scientific knowledge to be addressed through future research.

Abstract
The relationship between food and atopic dermatitis (AD) is complex. A common misunderstanding is that food allergies have a significant impact on the course of AD, resulting in uncontrolled attempts at elimination diets and undertreatment of the skin itself. Studies have shown that only a small portion of cutaneous reactions to food in the form of late, eczematous eruptions will directly exacerbate AD in young infants who have moderate-to-severe AD. Given the low frequency of food allergies actually inducing flares of AD, the focus should return to appropriate skin therapy, and identification of true food allergies should be reserved for recalcitrant AD in children in whom the suspicion for food allergy is high. A different relationship between food and AD involves delaying or preventing AD in high-risk infants by exclusive breastfeeding during the first 4 months of life. Finally, the skin barrier defect in AD may allow for easier and earlier sensitization of food and airborne allergens; therefore, exposure of food proteins on AD skin may act as a risk factor for development of food allergies.

Abstract
The aim was to describe the relapsing pattern, sensitization and prognosis of atopic dermatitis (AD) in the first 6 yr in a population-based, prospective birth cohort. The DARC cohort includes 562 children with clinical examinations, specific-IgE and skin prick test at all follow-ups. All children were examined for the development of AD using Hanifin-Rajka criteria and for food hypersensitivity by oral challenges. Severity of AD was measured by objective SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD). Point-prevalence of AD peaked at 18 months of age (10%) and decreased at 36 and 72 months to slightly below 7%. The 6-yr cumulative incidence was 22.8% and sensitization was found in 43% of children with AD. It was predominately sensitization to foods, however shifting toward inhalant allergens with age. Sensitization at >or=2 follow-ups affected severity, whereas short-term sensitization at one follow-up does not. Children with early, non-IgE mediated (intrinsic) AD outgrew more often their eczema; however if they develop persistent AD, they remain intrinsic. Early long-term sensitization worsens the prognosis, but 38% of all children have a debut later than 18 months of age. Boys had earlier onset of AD than girls. The large number of follow-ups gives a detailed picture of the relapsing pattern and shows that the relapses occur independently of time of onset. We could not establish any clear correlation between elimination diets and AD duration nor severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of food hypersensitivity (FHS) and the relationship with atopic dermatitis (AD) is controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the development of FHS and to correlate this with AD in relation to sensitization and symptoms. METHODS This study combines new data from birth to 18 months of age with previous published results from 3 and 6 years. The Danish Allergy Research Centre cohort, including 562 children, is a unique, population-based, prospective birth cohort, with clinical examinations at all follow-ups. All children were examined for the development of AD using Hanifin-Rajka criteria and for FHS using interviews, skin prick test (SPT), specific immunoglobulin E (IgE), and food challenge according to EAACI guidelines. RESULTS Twenty children were confirmed with FHS to milk, egg, and peanut. FHS peaked at 18 months (3.6%) and then decreased to 1.2% at 72 months of age. No new cases were found after 3 years. Self-reporting could only be confirmed in 31% of cases. Among the 122 children with AD, 18 had FHS (14.8%). FHS was IgE-mediated in 95% of the cases but 16 of 20 children were additionally sensitized to other foods which they tolerated. Children with AD were neither more IgE-sensitized nor had higher levels of IgE when compared with healthy children but they were more persistently sensitized. CONCLUSIONS Sensitization to foods in young children without food allergy seems to be a normal phenomenon. The discrepancy between sensitization, self-reported food-related symptoms and confirmed FHS illustrates the need to perform standardized oral challenges in order to confirm the diagnosis of FHS.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To discuss the significance of studies published over the previous year regarding the pathogenesis and treatment of atopic dermatitis, including prevention, skin care, environmental modifications, nutrition, education, and anti-inflammatory medications. RECENT FINDINGS Recent evidence shows that 42.5% of the caregivers of children with atopic dermatitis had used alternative therapies, most commonly due to fears of topical steroid side-effects and dissatisfaction with conventional treatment. Common questions, such as the potential utility of prenatal probiotics for prevention of atopic dermatitis, as well as the interplay of food allergies and eczema will be discussed in detail. New research continues to show the efficacy and safety of topical calcineurin inhibitors and atopiclair. We will review advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, and the latest research on therapies available to clinicians to aid them in discussions with their patients. SUMMARY Atopic dermatitis impacts negatively the quality of life of both patients and their families. General pediatricians play a pivotal role in the management of this chronic condition. Management should focus on providing sound advice and easing fears regarding topical steroids, as well as pursuing conservative treatments that have the potential to prevent flares.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis is increasing in prevalence and currently affects 15–30% of children in urban areas. Immune dysregulation and an impaired epidermal barrier are important factors in the pathogenesis of this disease. Pruritus and a chronic relapsing remitting course are hallmarks of the disorder, and sleep disturbance can occur in both the patient and family. Preventive interventions include exclusive breastfeeding in the first 4 months of life and withholding solid foods for 6 months. The avoidance of irritants and the use of emollients decrease flares. Topical corticosteroids remain the mainstay of therapy, and should be judiciously utilized. Excessive and inappropriate use must be avoided, as well as ‘steroid phobia’. The topical calcineurin inhibitors can be useful adjuncts. Systemic therapies are available for severe disease, but carry risks of adverse effects.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disease that especially affects children and adolescents. Many environmental factors have been recognized as relevant in aggravating skin lesions of the disease. However, it remains to be determined whether foods play a role in worsening of skin lesions in children with atopic dermatitis. In the present study, we investigated whether foods play a role in irregular aggravation of skin lesions in children with the disease. The study population consisted of 69 patients aged 3-15 years with atopic dermatitis. They were hospitalized and open challenge tests were performed with suspected foods. Photographs of representative skin lesion sites were taken at baseline and before and after the challenge. We determined challenge-positive foods by evaluating the comparable before/after challenge photographs. One to three (average, 1.9) challenge-positive foods were confirmed in 52 (75%) of the 69 patients examined. Predominant offending foods were chocolate, cheese and yogurt. Specific immunoglobulin E values to offending foods were mostly negative. We asked patients to exclude challenge-positive foods from their diets. They were then discharged and followed up for 3 months at our outpatient clinic. Exclusion of the offending foods for 3 months brought about a remarkable improvement in the disease. These results suggest that foods play an important role in irregular aggravation of skin lesions in children with atopic dermatitis.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, pruritic, inflammatory skin disease affecting more than 10% of all children. Sensitization to foods triggers isolated skin symptoms in about 30% of children. These symptoms include immediate reactions within minutes after ingesting food without exacerbation of AD and early and late exacerbations of AD. It is important to identify clinically relevant sensitizations to foods using skin prick tests, a specific IgE blood test (ImmunoCAP; Phadia, Portage, MI, USA), and double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges to initiate appropriate dietary interventions and avoid unnecessary dietary restrictions. Children with AD triggered by food allergens demonstrate a distinct immune response upon stimulation of their peripheral blood mononuclear cells with food allergen. A defective skin barrier and increased intestinal permeability appear to facilitate allergen sensitization. Appropriate skin care to maintain skin barrier function and dietary avoidance of highly allergenic foods during infancy may help to prevent allergen sensitization, thereby reducing the severity of AD and food allergies.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense pruritus and frequent relapsing courses. It occurs mostly in patients who have a personal or family history of other atopic conditions, such as asthma or allergic rhinitis. The prevalence of AD is high, particularly in children, with rapidly increasing numbers in the past few decades. The chronicity of this disease, along with its relapsing nature, presents treatment and management challenges for clinicians and frustration for patients and their families.

Abstract
This review summarizes the general approach and philosophy of managing difficult atopic dermatitis. There are as many regimens as there are physicians, but too many fail to provide patients with adequate relief. This leads to the wasteful alternative - an allergy-seeking behavior that makes caring for these patients even more complicated. If we, as dermatologists, provide rational counseling on prevention and skin care along with effective, stable, anti-inflammatory therapy, our patients may stop seeking irrational approaches. The new flood of information relating to epidermal barrier provides a basis for seeking and treating xerotic conditions earlier during infancy with the hope that the increasing problems with atopic dermatitis and asthma may be lessened with simple and safe measures.
