Gender differences in lifestyle and risk factors of metabolic syndrome: Do women have better health habits than men?

Prevalence and factors associated with unhealthy metabolic status according to body mass index: analysis of a national nutritional survey

INTRODUCTION

Although obesity substantially influences public health owing to related comorbidities, it has been discovered that the incidence of such issues is not directly related to obesity but to the patient's unhealthy metabolic status (MUS) independent of the body mass index (BMI).

OBJECTIVES

To describe the prevalence of UMS overall and according to BMI and determine the factors associated with it.

METHODS

A cross-sectional analytical study was used based on the analysis of secondary databases called the Life Stage Nutritional Surveillance Survey (VIANEV). Participants were selected in two stages, finally obtaining 885 participants. UMS was defined based on the criteria of the Adult Treatment Panel III used to define metabolic status in a set of 5 parameters, if the subject presented two or more alterations it was considered UMS. Six groups were formed according to BMI: metabolically healthy, average weight (MHNW) and unhealthy (MUNW), metabolically healthy, overweight (MHOW) and unhealthy (MUOW), metabolically healthy, obese (MHO) and unhealthy (MUO).).

RESULTS

The total prevalence of UMS was 73.11%, with MUNW, MUOW, and MUO being 47.90%, 80.34%, and 96.44%, respectively. Only 5.31% did not present any metabolic alteration. The multivariable analysis found variations globally according to sex, age, marital status, geographical region, smoking habit, and altitude.

CONCLUSIONS

A high prevalence of UMS was observed in Peru, indicating that BMI alone is not a sufficient indicator of metabolic status. These findings suggest that strategies should be prioritized to address the growing problem of UMS, considering the particularities of each subpopulation and using a multifaceted approach that addresses modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors.

The prevalence of the risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases among Iranian adults: Findings of a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Lack of accurate estimation of the risk factors associated with these diseases can impair the designing of effective interventions in this field; the present study aimed to investigate the risk factors attributable to cardiovascular diseases in males and females visiting comprehensive health service centers in 2018.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

This cross-sectional study is part of the national health transformation plan shaped in response to the emerging epidemic of noncommunicable diseases. In the present study, 6,331 participants aged 30 years and older were randomly and census selected from comprehensive urban and rural health service centers in Naein County, in Isfahan, Iran, respectively. The data were collected using the electronic health record from the IraPEN program in two sections: demographic information and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors. They were then analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 24 software using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and logistic regression.

RESULTS

The participants' mean age was 55.09 ± 16.11 years. The main risk factor was insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables while smoking was a negligible risk factor. Low physical activity, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and high body mass index were more prevalent in females than in males, whereas smoking was more frequently reported in males (P < 0.001). Risk factors such as age, gender, education level, place of residence, and marital status, played a significant role in determining CVD risk factors.

DISCUSSION

More than half of Iranian adults had one or older cardiovascular disease-related risk factors, and the prevalence of such factors was higher in females than in males. Given the importance of gender differences in cardiovascular disease-related health habits, it is necessary to reduce the majority of these diseases in society, especially in women, by controlling modifiable risk factors.

Association between the transition to metabolically unhealthy obesity and lifestyle behavior: A nationwide cohort study

OBJECTIVES

To identify the characteristics of individuals transitioning from metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) to unhealthy obesity and the factors influencing the change.

DESIGN

This is a nationwide cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea.

SAMPLE

Individuals with obesity but metabolically healthy in 2009 and 2010 and those still obese 4 years later were selected.

MEASUREMENTS

Sociodemographic, physical, metabolic, and health behavior variables were collected, and logistic regression was used to find an association with the transition.

RESULTS

We analyzed 1,564,467 individuals, observing significant differences in all variables and the transition from MHO to unhealthy obesity. Among males, the transition was associated with smoking and drinking positively and physical activity negatively. Among females, drinking demonstrated a negative correlation. Regardless of age, regular exercise was negatively associated with the transition for all individuals. Except for older adults, all age groups showed a positive correlation with smoking and drinking.

CONCLUSIONS

Considering the significant factors in the transition, it is essential to develop and implement interventions varied by gender and age to delay and prevent the change in metabolic status. The necessity of developing interventions enables individuals to engage in regular exercise, regardless of age and gender.

Predicting the Transition to Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity Among Young Adults With Metabolically Healthy Obesity in South Korea: Nationwide Population-Based Study

BACKGROUND

Globally, over 39% of individuals are obese. Metabolic syndrome, usually accompanied by obesity, is regarded as a major contributor to noncommunicable diseases. Given this relationship, the concepts of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity, considering metabolic status, have been evolving. Attention is being directed to metabolically healthy people with obesity who have relatively low transition rates to noncommunicable diseases. As obesity rates continue to rise and unhealthy behaviors prevail among young adults, there is a growing need for obesity management that considers these metabolic statuses. A nomogram can be used as an effective tool to predict the risk of transitioning to metabolically unhealthy obesity from a metabolically healthy status.

OBJECTIVE

The study aimed to identify demographic factors, health behaviors, and 5 metabolic statuses related to the transition from metabolically healthy obesity to unhealthy obesity among people aged between 20 and 44 years and to develop a screening tool to predict this transition.

METHODS

This secondary analysis study used national health data from the National Health Insurance System in South Korea. We analyzed the customized data using SAS (SAS Institute Inc) and conducted logistic regression to identify factors related to the transition from metabolically healthy to unhealthy obesity. A nomogram was developed to predict the transition using the identified factors.

RESULTS

Among 3,351,989 people, there was a significant association between the transition from metabolically healthy to unhealthy obesity and general characteristics, health behaviors, and metabolic components. Male participants showed a 1.30 higher odds ratio for transitioning to metabolically unhealthy obesity than female participants, and people in the lowest economic status were also at risk for the transition (odds ratio 1.08, 95% CI 1.05-1.1). Smoking status, consuming >30 g of alcohol, and insufficient regular exercise were negatively associated with the transition. Each relevant variable was assigned a point value. When the nomogram total points reached 295, the shift from metabolically healthy to unhealthy obesity had a prediction rate of >50%.

CONCLUSIONS

This study identified key factors for young adults transitioning from healthy to unhealthy obesity, creating a predictive nomogram. This nomogram, including triglycerides, waist circumference, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose, allows easy assessment of obesity risk even for the general population. This tool simplifies predictions amid rising obesity rates and interventions.

Knowledge of cardiovascular diseases and associated risk factors in the general adult population of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study examining gender disparities

To assess knowledge about cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among the general population, we emphasized gender-related disparities and other lifestyle and health-related factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 395 individuals from the general population of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. An online questionnaire was administered to assess knowledge of CVD types, symptoms, and risk factors. The majority of participants identified coronary heart disease (73.7%) as having CVD, with no sex effect. Males had higher knowledge regarding cerebrovascular disease (44% vs 31.5%) and congenital heart diseases (60% vs 51.9%) as being part of CVD, while they had lower knowledge of peripheral arterial disease (44% vs 50.7%) than females, respectively (P < .05). Males exhibited better knowledge of heart attack and stroke symptoms than females. Knowledge was optimal for major CVD risk factors, such as smoking (90.6%) and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (85.1%); however, gaps were observed in recognizing diabetes (56.2%) and stress (69.4%) as factors for CVD. The mean overall knowledge score was 16.33 ± 5.72 25, with no difference between sexes (P = .239). Predictors of good CVD knowledge included university-level education, daily healthy food consumption, and perceived life as highly stressful; nonetheless, sex showed no significant effect. While the general population displayed a suboptimal understanding of CVD, notable sex disparities were observed, highlighting the need for tailored public health interventions. Emphasizing cognitive and behavioral aspects can foster better prevention and management strategies, given the evident gender disparities.

A regional Report Card on physical activity in children and adolescents: The case of Extremadura (Spain) in the Global Matrix 4.0

Background/objective

This study presents the first Report Card from Extremadura (Spain), concerning the 4th edition of Global Matrix (GM), which aimed to provide an assessment of Physical Activity (PA) in children and adolescents based on 10 common indicators defined by GM.

Methods

This Report Card was developed by 34 experts from 8 public institutions and 5 research groups from Extremadura and audited by the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance (AHKGA). All documents, up to July 2021, were analyzed to grade the 10 indicators according to the benchmarks set out by the AHKGA (scale ranging from A to F).

Results

Information was reported in 8 of the 10 indicators, only Active Play and Active Transportation were not reported due to a lack of local information. The other 8 indicators were graded as follows: Overall Physical Activity: F; Organized Sport and Physical Activity: D+, Sedentary Behavior: D, Physical Fitness: C+, Family and Peers: A, School: C+, Community and Environment: B, and Government: C-. In addition, some of the indicators were evaluated according to gender; boys scored higher than girls in Overall Physical Activity (D-vs. F); Organized Sport and Physical Activity (C vs. D) and Physical Fitness (C- vs. D+).

Conclusion

The first Report Card from Extremadura in the GM initiative revealed low compliance with international guidelines on PA and sedentary behavior. Despite high grades for sources of influence, the implemented actions have not been effective yet, and there is no information on Active Play and Active Transportation. These results will allow regional authorities to act at a more local level, as Extremadura's administrative framework allows public administrations and political institutions to act in terms of legislative and budgetary powers among others, which is important for resource allocation.

Association between oxidative stress exposure and colorectal cancer risk in 98,395 participants: results from a prospective study

Background

The intricate role of oxidative stress (OS) in colorectal cancer (CRC) initiation is underscored by an imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants. Utilizing the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) as a metric, this study aims to investigate the association between OS exposure and CRC risk, while also examining potential sex-specific differences in a large U.S. cohort.

Methods

The study included 98,395 adults from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. To construct the OBS, 14 dietary and lifestyle factors intricately associated with oxidative stress were quantified. A higher OBS value indicated a more favorable oxidative balance pattern or diminished OS exposure. Due to sex-specific differences in OBS, associations were evaluated separately for men and women based on Cox regression analysis. Subgroup analyses were conducted to elucidate potential modifiers.

Results

During 867,963.4 person-years of follow-up, 1,054 CRCs occurred. The mean (SD) age and OBS were 65.52 (5.73) years and 14.09 (3.95) points, respectively. In the fully adjusted Cox model, we observed an inverse association between OBS and CRC incidence in women (HRQ5vsQ1: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.52, 0.99; P for trend = 0.018) but not men. Subgroup analyses revealed the inverse association was more pronounced among women without versus with a family history of CRC (HRQ5 vsQ1: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.47-0.93; P for trend = 0.001; P for interaction = 0.001). The results remained robust after several sensitivity analyses.

Conclusion

Higher OBS was associated with lower CRC risk in women but not men; this inverse association was stronger among women without a family history of CRC. These findings suggest exposure to OS may confer sex-specific CRC risk effects, especially for women without a family history of CRC.

Non-linear association of triglyceride-glucose index with prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes: a cross-sectional study

Background

The Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been acknowledged as a convenient, cost-effective, and relatively simple marker for insulin resistance (IR). Meanwhile, prediabetes, described as an asymptomatic, moderately hyperglycemic state, tends to be more prevalent than diabetes. Thus, the objective of this study was to explore the relationship between the TyG index and the prevalence of both prediabetes and diabetes within the U.S. population.

Methods

This study utilized a cross-sectional dataset derived from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999 to 2018. The subjects were individuals aged 18 years and above, who had available fasting glucose and fasting triglyceride information, permitting a diagnosis of prediabetes or diabetes. The TyG index was computed using laboratory data, and participants were subsequently categorized into quartiles based on this information. The relationship between the TyG index and the prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes was investigated using logistic regression analysis.

Results

Out of the 25,159 participants, 23.88% were found to have prediabetes, while 16.22% were diagnosed with diabetes. After adjusting for confounding factors, a linear increase in relative odds was observed in Q2 (OR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.52, 1.89), Q3 (OR: 2.57; 95% CI: 2.30, 2.88), and Q4 (OR: 4.88; 95% CI: 4.33, 5.49) groups in comparison to the reference group, Q1. In addition, a non-linear relationship was observed between the TyG index and the prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes. Specifically, patients with a TyG index greater than 8.00 overall exhibited a significantly higher risk of prediabetes and diabetes, confirming that an increase in the TyG index is associated with a corresponding increase in risk. However, this shift showed gender-specific variations; the threshold was observed at 8.00 in males but shifted to 9.00 in females.

Conclusion

The TyG index demonstrated a non-linear positive correlation with both prediabetes and diabetes. This suggests that maintaining the TyG index at a certain, reduced level could potentially aid in preventing the onset of prediabetes and diabetes.

Effect of physical activity on incidence and mortality in patients with gastric cancer: evidence from real-world studies

PURPOSE

Physical activity (PA) has been suggested to reduce the risk of cancer. However, previous studies have been inconsistent regarding the relationship between PA and the risk of developing gastric cancer (GC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of PA on the incidence and mortality risk of GC through a meta-analysis, as well as investigate potential dose-response relationships.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was conducted in 10 electronic databases and 4 registries. The combined relative risks (RRs) were calculated using a random-effects model with 95% confidence interval (CIs) to assess the effect of PA on the risk of GC. Relevant subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were performed.

RESULTS

The results showed that PA correlated with lower incidence of GC (RR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.77-0.90), decreased risk of GC mortality (RR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.66-0.89). The results of the subgroup analysis showed that PA was associated with reduced incidence of GC across gender, different regions, study designs, different sites of GC and different types of PA. A linear relationship was found for frequency of PA.

CONCLUSIONS

This meta-analysis found that PA was associated with a reduced risk of GC incidence and mortality. The correlation between PA and GC occurrence was in a dose-response relationship.

Evidence that ovarian hormones, but not diet and exercise, contribute to the sex disparity in post-traumatic stress disorder

Females are twice as likely as males to receive a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One hypothesis for this sex disparity is that ovarian hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, contribute to PTSD risk. Alternatively, sex differences in lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, may play a role in PTSD risk. Using data from the Atlantic Partnership for Tomorrow's Health (PATH) cohort (n = 16,899), the relationship between endogenous hormone fluctuations (e.g., menarche, pregnancy, and menopause), exogenous hormone use (e.g., hormonal contraception and hormone replacement therapy (HRT)) and lifestyle variables (diet and exercise habits, as measured by the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener, Healthy Eating Index, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire) with PTSD diagnosis and treatment were analyzed. While several hormonal variables, including contraceptive use, higher total number of pregnancies, younger menarche age, and having undergone menopause increased the risk of PTSD, no lifestyle variables contributed to an increased risk of PTSD diagnosis. These findings support the theory that ovarian hormones contribute to the sex-linked disparity in PTSD diagnosis.

Sex differences in clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes in patients admitted for ventricular tachycardia: 2016-2018

INTRODUCTION

The concurrent data on sex disparities in VT management and outcomes have remained unclear. Therefore, our objective was to determine the impact of sex on ventricular tachycardia (VT) management and outcomes in patients admitted with VT, dervied from the US National Inpatient Sample database (NIS).

METHODS

We used data from the US NIS to identify hospitalized adult patients who were admitted with VT between 2016 and 2018. Regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of sex on VT management, in-hospital mortality, complications, length of stay, and hospitalization costs.

RESULTS

Of the database, a total of 146 070 patients, who were primarily hospitalized for VT, were approximated. Among these, women comprised 25.5%; they were significantly younger and had fewer comorbidities. Of procedural aspects, women were less likely to receive an angiogram, mechanical support, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantation, and VT ablation compared to men. Notably, women were associated with higher do-not-resuscitate rates and in-hospital cardiac arrests than men. No differences in in-hospital mortality and cardiogenic shock were observed between men and women (p > .05). Length of stay was significantly longer for women, while no differences in hospital costs were observed in both sexes.

CONCLUSION

Significant sex disparities in management and outcomes were observed in admitted patients with VT. Our results reflect the need for further studies to explore factors causing such diversities.

Gender differences in metabolic syndrome and its components in southern china using a healthy lifestyle index: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Lifestyle changes are important for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome (MetS), but studies that focus on gender differences in the lifestyle risk factors of MetS are limited in China. This research aimed to generate a healthy lifestyle index (HLI) to assess the behavioral risk factors of MetS and its components, and to explore the gender differences in HLI score and other influencing factors of MetS.

METHODS

A convenience sample of 532 outpatients were recruited from a general hospital in Changsha, China. The general information and HLI scores [including physical activity (PA), diet, smoking, alcohol use, and body mass index (BMI)] of the subjects were collected through questionnaires, and each patient's height, weight, waist circumference, and other physical signs were measured. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors of MetS and its components.

RESULTS

The prevalence of MetS was 33.3% for the whole sample (46.3% in males and 23.3% in females). The risk of MetS increased with age, smoking, unhealthy diet, and BMI in males and with age and BMI in females. Our logistic regression analysis showed that lower HLI (male: OR = 0.838,95%CI = 0.757-0.929; female: OR = 0.752, 95%CI = 0.645-0.876) and older age (male: OR = 2.899, 95%CI = 1.446-5.812; female: OR = 4.430, 95%CI = 1.640-11.969) were independent risk factors of MetS, for both sexes.

CONCLUSION

Low levels of HLI and older ages were independent risk factors of MetS in both males and females. The association between aging and MetS risk was stronger in females, while the association between unhealthy lifestyles and MetS risk was stronger in males. Our findings reinforced the expected gender differences in MetS prevalence and its risk factors, which has implications for the future development of gender-specific MetS prevention and intervention programs.

US Adults Practicing Healthy Lifestyles Before and During COVID-19: Comparative Analysis of National Surveys

BACKGROUND

Practicing healthy lifestyles can reduce the risk to develop noncommunicable diseases and the related mortality. Studies showed that practicing healthy lifestyles could enhance disease-free life expectancy and preserve bodily functions. However, engagement in healthy lifestyle behavior was suboptimal.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to define individuals' lifestyle characteristics before and during COVID-19 and determine the factors associated with practicing a healthy lifestyle. This cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 2019 and 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys.

METHODS

US individuals aged ≥18 years were interviewed via phone call. Healthy lifestyles were assessed through corresponding questions regarding the maintenance of optimal body weight, physical activity, daily consumption of at least five portions of fruits and vegetables, current smoking status, and alcohol consumption. Missing data were imputed using a package in the R statistical software. The effects of practicing a healthy lifestyle on cases without missing data and those with imputation were reported.

RESULTS

There were 550,607 respondents (272,543 and 278,064 from 2019 and 2021, respectively) included in this analysis. The rates of practicing a healthy lifestyle were 4% (10,955/272,543) and 3.6% (10,139/278,064) in 2019 and 2021, respectively. Although 36.6% (160,629/438,693) of all 2021 respondents had missing data, the results of the logistic regression analysis for cases without missing data and those with imputation were similar. Of the cases with imputation, women (odds ratio [OR] 1.87) residing in urban areas (OR 1.24) with high education levels (OR 1.73) and good or better health status (OR 1.59) were more likely to practice healthier lifestyles than young individuals (OR 0.51-0.67) with a low household income (OR 0.74-0.78) and chronic health conditions (OR 0.48-0.74).

CONCLUSIONS

A healthy lifestyle should be strongly promoted at the community level. In particular, factors associated with a low rate of practice of healthy lifestyles should be targeted.

Sex differences in the change of exercise behavior leading to incident metabolic syndrome reduction: A community-based prospective study

This study was undertaken to assess the role of sex differences in the effects of exercise behavior change on incident metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Changhua County, Taiwan. Using data derived from the Changhua Community-based Integrated Screening (CHCIS), 22,594 eligible residents aged 40 years or older had the screening at least twice from 2005 to 2018. A prospective cohort study was designed to follow up the normal cohort without MetS at baseline to ascertain incident MetS in the light of the criteria of the Epidemiology Task Force Consensus Group. We then evaluated whether there was a sex difference in the outcome of incident MetS attributed to the change in exercise behavior from three (no, irregular, and regular exercise) maintained patterns already defined at baseline to either the enhanced pattern or the reduced pattern by the end of follow-up. We applied Cox proportional hazards regression model stratified by sex for estimating the hazard ratio of any two-group comparison. After adjustment for sociodemographic factors, the number of screenings attended, personal disease history, and other health behaviors, the influence of change in exercise behavior on incident MetS was statistically significant only in men. Specifically, maintaining no exercise showed a lower risk of MetS than maintaining regular exercise 21 % in men. Regarding the change in exercise behavior, men with the enhanced pattern reduced the risk of MetS by 15 % compared with those maintaining regular exercise. The findings suggest that positive changes in exercise behavior reduce the incidence of MetS in men but not in women.

Rate of Nutrition-Related Chronic Diseases Among a Multi-Ethnic Group of Uninsured Adults

The prevalence of nutrition-related chronic diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes, among adults in the U.S. is of increasing importance. These conditions adversely affect the overall public health, health care systems, and economy. Marginalized minority groups have been disproportionally affected by these conditions. Lack of or inadequate health insurance limits access to health care, which contributes to poor health outcomes among individuals with these conditions. South Florida is home to diverse racial/ethnic minority groups, many of whom are uninsured and do not have access to expert-delivered nutrition education services. It is imperative to thoroughly study the health needs of these underserved patient populations and examine the rate of nutrition-related conditions among them in order to develop medically and culturally tailored nutrition education programs for them. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of nutrition-related diseases among multi-racial/ethnic uninsured individuals living in South Florida. A four-week electronic health record of adult patients (N=272) from a free clinic in South Florida was analyzed. Spearman`s correlation and binary regression models were used to assess the relationship between the variables. The sample included females (65%) and males (35%). The mean age was 49.08±14.56 years. Overall, 87% had at least one nutrition-related condition, with overweight/obesity being the most observed (75.2%), followed by hypertension (39%), dyslipidemia (27.2%), and diabetes (23.9%). BMI was a significant predictor of the prevalence of hypertension among Whites (p=0.008) and Blacks (p=0.002) but not Asians (p=0.536). Overall, a high rate of nutrition-related chronic diseases was found among uninsured adults in this study. This supports the need for increased medically, culturally, and economically tailored nutrition education programs in free clinic settings.

Association between lifestyle factors and the risk of metabolic syndrome in the South Korea

This study aimed to examine the association between lifestyle factors and metabolic syndrome risk in South Korean adults. Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016–2018 data were used. The study included 6,995 subjects (2835 male; 4,160 female). Multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the relationship between the lifestyle factors, including sedentary time, sleep duration, alcohol consumption, smoking status, and dietary intake. Metabolic syndrome prevalence in healthy adults was 25.6% and 12.4% in men and women, respectively. Male with over four lifestyle risk factors had a higher OR for metabolic syndrome risk (over four lifestyle factors: OR 1.97, CI 1.18–3.27). Female with more than one lifestyle risk factor had a higher OR for metabolic syndrome risk (one lifestyle factor: OR 1.58, CI 1.10–2.28; two lifestyle factors: OR 2.08, CI 1.39–3.11; three lifestyle factors: OR 1.94, CI 1.20–3.13). In particular, female with more lifestyle factors had increased likelihood of abdominal obesity, hypertension, and high triglycerides. Male with more lifestyle factors had increased likelihood of high triglycerides. Sedentary time was significantly associated with increased metabolic syndrome in male and female. This study found a significant association between the number of lifestyle risk factors and the risk of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. The greater the number of lifestyle risk factors, the higher the risk of metabolic syndrome in both sexes. People with a greater number of poor lifestyle behaviors tended to exhibit increased likelihood of especially elevated triglyceride levels.

Socio-demographic correlates of diabetes self-reporting validity: a study on the adult Kurdish population

BACKGROUND

In this research, data of the DehPCS study were used to assess the validity of self-reported diabetes based on the reference criteria, including the history of taking oral anti-diabetic drugs, insulin injection, or high fasting blood sugar.

METHODS

A cross-sectional analytical study was performed on 4400 participants of the DehPCS study, aged 35-70 years. The reference criteria were oral hypoglycemic drug consumption, insulin injection, and/ or fasting blood sugar ≥126 (mg/dl). The self-reporting diabetes was investigated by well-trained interviewers before the diabetes diagnosis based on the reference criteria. The validity of self-reporting diabetes was assessed using sensitivity, specificity, as well as positive and negative predictive values. Socio-demographic correlates of self-reported agreement were examined by multinomial logistic regression.

RESULTS

Three thousand nine hundred ninety-six people participated in this study, and the participation rate was equal to 90.8%. The diabetes prevalence among the study population was 13.1% based on self-reports and 9.7% based on the reference criteria. Five hundred twenty-three participants reported diabetes, 213 (41.28%) of whom did not have it. We found a good agreement of 92.3% with an acceptable kappa value of 65.1% between self-reporting diabetes and the reference criteria. Diabetes self-reporting also guaranteed sensitivity of 78.5%, specificity of 93.9%, as well as the positive and negative predictive values of 58.7% and of 98.0%, respectively. Being female, the higher economic class, the higher body mass index (BMI), and the positive family history of diabetes increased the chance of false positive. Being male, older ages and the moderate economic class increased the chance of false positive.

CONCLUSION

Self-reporting diabetes is identified as a relatively valid tool which could fairly determine the diabetes prevalence in epidemiological studies. It should be noted that its validity is influenced by some socio-demographic characteristics.

Tooth Loss Related with Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in a General Urban Japanese Population: The Suita Study

We examined whether the number of teeth could be a surrogate marker for metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk in cross-section. A total of 3771 individuals from the general urban Japanese population (1690 men, 2081 women; mean age 67.1 ± 11.0 years) participated in this study. Participants were diagnosed with MetS with three or more components hypertension, hyperglycemia, lipid metabolism abnormality, and abnormal abdominal girth. Questionnaires were administered to determine the number of teeth, smoking status, drinking status, and past illnesses. To clarify the relationships between the number of teeth and the presence of MetS components, we divided subjects into two groups: those with less than 20 residual teeth and those with 20 or more, then statistical analyses (Mantel-Haenszel tests and logistic regression analysis) were performed. MetS were higher for those with ≤19 teeth than those with ≥20 teeth when examining all participants and women-only groups. Hyperglycemia, low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides, and diagnosis with MetS were all significantly higher in the ≤19 teeth group for both sexes combined and for women. These results suggest that less than 20 teeth may be a surrogate marker for MetS risk, but further studies on gender differences and pathological background are needed.

Metabolic syndrome and its association with changes in modifiable risk factors: Epifloripa aging study

Purpose

To estimate the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and its association with changes in modifiable risk factors in older adults from southern Brazil.

Methods

A longitudinal study was performed with data from EpiFloripa Aging study. We defined MetS by the existence of three or more of the following risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD): waist circumference (WC) (≥ 92 cm in men and ≥ 87 cm in women); fasting glucose (≥100 mg/dl); decreased HDL cholesterol (<40 mg/dl in men and <50 mg/dl in women); hypertriglyceridemia (≥150 mg/dl) and blood pressure (≥130/85 mmHg). We evaluated the changes in modifiable risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, and body mass index) between the two moments of the study (2009/10 and 2013/14). Directed acyclic graph and logistic regression models were used.

Results

Among the 599 participants, the prevalence of MetS was 64.0% (95% CI, 58.7-68.9). In the adjusted analysis, those who remained or became persons who are overweight (OR = 4.59; 95% CI: 3.05-6.89) and those who remained or became insufficiently active (OR = 1.92; 95% CI: 1.23-2.98) were more likely to present MetS.

Conclusion

Our findings suggest that being or becoming overweight and being or becoming insufficiently active are modifiable factors associated with MetS. These results highlight the need for developing preventive strategies for the observed risk indicators to mitigate the prevalence of MetS in older adults.

Lower Masticatory Performance Is a Risk for the Development of the Metabolic Syndrome: The Suita Study

Objectives: Declined masticatory function has recently been receiving attention as a risk factor for poor general health. The present longitudinal analysis was conducted to clarify the relationship between decreased masticatory performance and the development of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a general urban cohort in Japan.

Methods: We surveyed 599 participants (254 men, 345 women; mean age at baseline, 65.8 ± 7.8 years) who underwent physical health checkups in the Suita study. We evaluated masticatory performance at baseline using test gummy jelly and divided participants into two groups: a “Lower group,” comprising participants in the lower 25% of the masticatory performance at baseline; and a “Normal group,” comprising all others. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for the Lower group by using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis to develop the MetS and the components of the MetS at follow-up, adjusting for age, smoking status, and periodontal status.

Results: On Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, the multivariable adjusted hazard ratio for the development of the MetS in the Lower group was 2.24 (95% confidence interval, 1.12–4.50) in men. The multivariable adjusted hazard ratio for the development of high blood pressure was 3.12 (1.42–6.87), for high triglycerides was 2.82 (1.18–6.76), and for high fasting plasma glucose was 2.65 (1.00–7.00) in men.

Conclusions: Lower masticatory performance suggested to be a risk factor for the development of the MetS as well as MetS components such as high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and high fasting plasma glucose in Japanese men.

The effects of psychopathology and shame on social representations of health and lifestyle behaviours via free association: a graph analysis approach

BACKGROUND

There is a knowledge gap in whether psychopathology aspects can shape and mark the social representations about health and lifestyle. In this work, we investigated the association of psychopathology and shame with the centrality of the words describing eight common social representations of health and lifestyle.

METHODS

A convenience sample of 288 adults participated with an average age of 44.7, and 62.6% were women. The participants were asked to express three consecutive words associated with eight different health and lifestyle experiences by utilizing the free association method. The participants also were completed the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), the Experiences of Shame Scale (ESS), and the Other as Shamer Scale (OAS). Canonical correlation analysis was applied to investigate the relationship between the set of the eight-word centralities and the psycho-demographic variables consisting of the subject's age and gender, the SCL 90 subscales, the OAS, and the ESS. Based on these findings, a structural equation explorative model was formed to test the unidimensionality of the five centralities construct.

RESULTS

Τhe psychological characteristics of interpersonal sensitivity, depression, external shame, and hostility were found to affect the word selection process on the social representations concerning nightlife, health, diet, lifestyle, and alcohol consumption. Participants with increased levels of depression tend to choose more centrally positioned words when the stimulus word was diet and more decentralized responses when the stimulus word was health. At the same time, higher external shame corresponded to more decentralized words for the categories of health and lifestyle.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results indicate that there is a potential interaction between the psychological state and how a social representation of health and lifestyle is constructed through selected words. Graph theory emerged as an additional tool to use to study these relations.

Gender Differences in the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome Among Taiwanese Air Force Personnel: A Population-Based Study

BACKGROUND

Authors of several studies have reported differences in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) between men and women. However, information is lacking on gender difference among military personnel.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of MetS and its component abnormalities among Taiwanese Air Force personnel by gender and age groups.

METHODS

A population-based study was conducted including 14 872 Taiwanese Air Force personnel. Data were retrieved from the military's Health Management Information System. Analyses were performed using Student t test, χ test, and linear-by-linear χ test. Statistical significance was defined as P < .05.

RESULTS

The MetS prevalence was 14.0% (15.1% in men and 5.3% in women). Metabolic syndrome was associated with age for both men and women (both Ptrend < .001), with a greater prevalence of MetS in men aged 18 to 44 years than in women, but not in the age group of 45 years or older. In men, MetS was most prevalent in those with increased waist circumference (78.2%), followed by those with elevated blood pressure (75.6%). By contrast, in women, it was most prevalent in those with increased waist circumference (86.5%), followed by those with reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (84.3%).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that military nurses and other health providers should consider the gender- and age-based MetS prevalence trend among Taiwanese Air Force personnel when designing interventions to identify vulnerable subgroups at a high risk of MetS. Health management programs should be adapted to minimize metabolic risks.

Olfactory dysfunction in aging and neurodegenerative diseases

Alterations in olfactory functions are proposed to be early biomarkers for neurodegeneration. Many neurodegenerative diseases are age-related, including two of the most common, Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The establishment of biomarkers that promote early risk identification is critical for the implementation of early treatment to postpone or avert pathological development. Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is seen in 90% of early-stage PD patients and 85% of patients with early-stage AD, which makes it an attractive biomarker for early diagnosis of these diseases. Here, we systematically review widely applied smelling tests available for humans as well as olfaction assessments performed in some animal models and the relationships between OD and normal aging, PD, AD, and other conditions. The utility of OD as a biomarker for neurodegenerative disease diagnosis and future research directions are also discussed.

Eating Speed, Eating Frequency, and Their Relationships with Diet Quality, Adiposity, and Metabolic Syndrome, or Its Components

Excess body weight is a major global health concern, particularly due to its associated increased health risks. Several strategies have been proposed to prevent overweight and obesity onset. In the past decade, it has been suggested that eating speed/rate and eating frequency might be related to obesity. The main aim of this narrative review was to summarize existing evidence regarding the impact of eating speed/rate and eating frequency on adiposity, metabolic syndrome (MetS), or diet quality (DQ). For this purpose, a literature search of observational and interventional trials was conducted between June and September 2020 in PubMed and Web of Sciences databases, without any data filters and no limitations for publication date. Results suggest that children and adults with a faster eating speed/rate may be associated with a higher risk of developing adiposity, MetS or its components. Furthermore, a higher eating frequency could be associated with diet quality improvement, lower adiposity, and lower risk of developing MetS or its components. Further interventional trials are warranted to clarify the mechanism by which these eating behaviors might have a potential impact on health.

Dairy Consumption and Risk of Metabolic Syndrome: Results from Korean Population and Meta-Analysis

Dairy consumption has been associated with decreased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in previous studies, but the association may be different according to each type of dairy products and its subgroups. Thus, we conducted an updated meta-analysis of observational studies to examine the association between various dairy products and risk of MetS. The PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched for eligible studies published up to February 2021. In addition, we included unpublished results from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013-2018, including 23,319 Korean adults and the elderly. A total of 35 studies (12 cohort studies and 25 cross-sectional studies) with 398,877 subjects were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled relative risks (RR) of MetS for the highest versus lowest categories of dairy consumption was 0.80 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72-0.88]. For the type of dairy products, there were also significant inverse associations with milk (RR: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.78-0.89) and yogurt consumption (RR: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.83-0.95). For cheese consumption, however, no significant association was found (RR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.86-1.11). Our findings suggest that milk and yogurt consumption is inversely associated with the risk of MetS, but not cheese consumption.

Moderate-Intensity Exercise and Musical Co-Treatment Decreased the Circulating Level of Betatrophin

Introduction. In general, the significant contribution of lack of physical activity is strongly correlated with lipid metabolism and metabolic disorder. Hitherto, betatrophin is a potential hormone that regulates the lipid profile in the body circulation-associated triglyceride level. This study was designed to evaluate the alteration of betatrophin levels in subject-onset hypertriglyceridemia with exercise intervention co-treated with music. Materials and Methods. A total of 60 nonprofessional athletes were enrolled in this study and given moderate-intensity exercise (MIE) combined with middle rhythm musical co-treatment. The ELISA method was applied to quantify the serum level of betatrophin in all samples. The statistical analysis was performed by applying the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, one-way ANOVA, and parametric linear correlation and regression. Results. Interestingly, our data show that MIE decreased the circulating level of betatrophin combined with music (12.47 ± 0.40 ng/mL) compared with that without musical co-treatment (20.81 ± 1.16 ng/mL) and high-intensity exercise (26.91 ± 2.23 ng/mL). The plasma level of betatrophin was positively correlated with triglycerides (r = 0.316, p≤0.05), systolic blood pressure (r = 0.428, p≤0.01), HDL (r = 0.366, p≤0.05), energy expenditure (r = 0.586, p≤0.001), PGC-1α (r = 0.573, p≤0.001), and irisin (r = 0.863, p≤0.001). By contrast, the plasma level of betatrophin was negatively associated with age (r = −0.298, p≤0.05) and LDL cholesterol (r = −0.372, p≤0.05). Importantly, betatrophin is a significant predictor for energy expenditure (p≤0.001) and plasma triglyceride levels (p≤0.05). Conclusions. Our data demonstrate that betatrophin levels decreased the post-MIE and musical therapeutical combination. Therefore, betatrophin may provide a benefit as the potential biomarker of physiological performance-associated physical training.

Gender differences in metabolic syndrome risk factors among patients with serious mental illness

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components continue to increase among patients with serious mental illness. This cross-sectional study investigated whether metabolic syndrome prevalence and risk factors differ between male and female patients with serious mental illness. In total, 260 eligible patients were recruited from two hospitals. The data on demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviour factors, biochemistry, and anthropometry were collected. Analyses were performed using multivariate logistic regression. Metabolic syndrome prevalence was 40.8% (35.1% in men and 46.8% in women). Among patients aged 40-49 years, metabolic syndrome prevalence was higher in men; however, the trend was reversed among patients aged 50 years or older. Notably, gender-specific metabolic syndrome risk factors were observed. In men, they included low education level, high body mass index (BMI), prolonged illness, comorbid physical illness, and diagnosis of bipolar disorder, whereas they included being married, old age, and high BMI in women. Our findings suggest that mental health professionals should consider the gender- and age-based metabolic syndrome prevalence trend in patients with serious mental illness when designing interventions for the study population to minimize metabolic syndrome prevalence.

Dietary Intake, Physical Activity and Metabolic Syndrome in African Americans, Hispanics and Whites

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the study was to compare the dietary intakes and physical activity levels among Whites, African Americans, and Hispanics with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS).

DESIGN

The study was based on secondary analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012.

SETTING

The NHANES's target population is the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S.

POPULATION

SUBJECTS

The sample was made up of 2,449 subjects aged 40 years or more, of both genders, and of three ethnic groups (African Americans, Whites and Hispanics).

RESULTS

Mean intakes of food energy, total fat, total saturated fatty acids, total monounsaturated fatty acids, cholesterol, lycopene, selenium and sodium were significantly higher in Whites with MetS. African-Americans with MetS had significantly lower dietary intakes of beta-carotene and total sugars. Also, mean vitamin A and beta-carotene intakes were significantly lower in the Hispanic subjects with MetS. Vigorous and moderate physical activity levels were significantly lower in African Americans and Hispanics with MetS. Computer use was significantly higher in Whites with MetS.

CONCLUSIONS

Variables significantly predictive of MetS were age, male gender, African-American ethnicity, BMI, and lycopene intake.
