Abstract
BACKGROUND Conflicting evidence exists regarding the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study investigates the association between UDCA administration and COVID-19 infection and its related outcomes in individuals with chronic liver disease (CLD). METHODS A customized COVID-19 research database (n = 3,485,376) was created by integrating data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's COVID-19 databases. The study focused on patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021, using the NHIS data from 365 days before diagnosis. To create comparable groups with and without UDCA administration before COVID-19, we used propensity score matching. The primary endpoint was the first confirmed positive result for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2. In addition, we identified severe COVID-19-related outcomes. Subgroup analysis were conducted based on the dose of UDCA exposure. RESULTS Data from 74,074 individuals with CLD was analyzed. The participants' average age was 57.5 years, and 52.1% (19,277) of those in each group were male. Those with prior UDCA exposure had a significantly lower risk of COVID-19 infection (adjusted OR: 0.80, 95% CI [0.76-0.85]) compared to the non-UDCA group. Additionally, the UDCA group had a lower risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes (adjusted OR: 0.67, 95% CI [0.46-0.98]). Subgroup analyses indicated that there was a decrease in COVID-19 infection and its related outcomes with increasing UDCA exposure dose. CONCLUSIONS Our large observational study highlights the potential use of readily available UDCA as an adjunctive therapy for COVID-19 in individuals with CLD.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on patients with acute cholangitis (AC) by comparing outcomes, complications, and hospital stays in a tertiary Gastroenterology department. Materials and Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study was conducted in a tertiary gastroenterology department, collecting data from all AC and AC + COVID-19 patients between April 2020 and February 2022. Data included clinical and demographic information, COVID-19-specific details, acute cholangitis presentation, medical records, laboratory results, and interventions. AC was diagnosed using Tokyo Guidelines 2018 (TG18) criteria, with all patients undergoing bile culture sampling. Results: The study included 241 patients, 30 in the COVID group and 211 in the non-COVID group. The COVID group's mean age was significantly higher (74.3 vs. 67.3 years, p < 0.009). Abdominal pain was more common in the COVID group (90% vs. 70.6%, p < 0.025). Length of hospital stay was longer for COVID patients (13.5 vs. 7.9 days, p < 0.001). COVID patients had higher incidences of malignant causes of AC, with pancreatic cancer being the most common (30%). Pseudomonas spp. was significantly more prevalent in COVID patients (16.7% vs. 5.7%, p = 0.028). Conclusions: Our study results show that COVID-19 affected the duration of hospitalization for patients with AC. Furthermore, this study presents observations regarding the impact of COVID-19 on AC, revealing differences in microbial profiles.

Abstract
Advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) is associated with a wide spectrum of immune dysfunction. The clinical impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the development of decompensation and immune response in unvaccinated outpatients has not as yet been clearly defined. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and immunological impact of SARS-CoV-2 on outpatients with ACLD. This is an observational case-control study, in which ACLD outpatients were included prospectively and consecutively and classified into two groups: SARS-CoV-2 infected and non-infected. Patients' baseline characteristics and infection data were collected and analyzed. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels against Spike 1 were evaluated. The primary endpoint was risk of liver decompensation during follow-up, assessed after propensity score matching and adjusted by Cox regression. Between October 2020 and July 2021, ACLD outpatients (n = 580) were identified, and 174 patients with clinical follow-up were included. SARS-CoV-2 infection incidence was 7.6% (n = 44). Risk of liver decompensation was significantly higher after infection (HR = 2.43 [1.01-5.86], p = 0.048) vs. non-infection. The time of IgG evaluation was similar in all patients (n = 74); IgG concentrations were significantly higher in compensated vs. decompensated patients (1.02 ± 0.35 pg/mL vs. 0.34 ± 0.16 pg/mL, p < 0.0001) and correlated with hemoglobin levels. The dysregulation of the innate immune response in patients with decompensated liver disease increased the risk of further decompensation following SARS-CoV-2, mainly due to a worsening of ascites.

Abstract
COVID-19 is a multisystem disease with many clinical manifestations, including liver damage and inflammation. The objective of this study is to analyze inflammation biomarkers in relation to the clinical outcome and respiratory symptoms of COVID-19. This is a retrospective cohort of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the Hospital Regional do Baixo Amazonas from 2020 to 2022. Data were collected from electronic medical records from admission to the 30th day of hospitalization and soon after hospital discharge. A total of 397 patients were included in the study. In the longitudinal follow-up of liver markers, a significant difference was found for AST on day 14, with a higher median in the death group. Among the hematological markers, lymphopenia was observed throughout the follow-up, with the death group having the most altered values. When comparing the evolution of biomarkers in the Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) and Invasive Mechanical Ventilation (IMV) groups, AST showed a significant difference only on day 14 and GGT on day 1, being greater in the IMV group, and indirect bilirubin on day 7 being more altered in the NIV group. In conclusion, death during hospitalization or a more severe form of COVID-19 was related to significant changes in liver and inflammatory biomarkers.

Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has generated an unprecedented challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. Currently, the scientific community wonders if liver injury in patients suffering from severe forms is a direct consequence of the virus or secondary manifestations of systemic inflammation. The liver plays an essential role in the development of the inflammatory storm typical of this disease, and its involvement is associated with worse clinical outcomes and a higher risk of morbidity and mortality from Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS Ten patients suffering from severe COVID-19 disease who died between January 2020 and December 2021 were included in the present analysis. These subjects underwent a post mortem examination with a focused evaluation of the hepatic injury. Also, several laboratory parameters have been evaluated, with a primary focus on prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen, antithrombin III, and D-dimers to detect coagulative changes. RESULTS The main cause of death was represented by pulmonary thromboembolism events (50%). The analysis of coagulation laboratory parameters and liver biomarkers revealed a statistically significant rise in aPTT and ALP, and a decrease in albumin, when comparing the blood value at admission and death. We also found high levels of D-dimers in most of the subjects at the time of hospitalization. Interestingly, the post mortem analysis of the liver showed ample morphologic variability, with several disease features. In detail, the liver histology revealed the following: the presence of a variable degree of micro- and macrovacuolar steatosis, inflammation (also, hepato-cholangitis), and variable fibrosis. Of mention, we were also able to detect organized fibrinous material. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that in subjects with a severe form of COVID-19, liver disease is related to changes in coagulative and fibrinolytic pathways. In particular, we noted low fibrinogen levels and high D-dimer levels with histological liver findings. Our data suggest that fibrinogen and D-dimers may be used as prognostic markers to detect the severity of liver disease in patients with COVID-19. Finally, we underline the crucial role of coagulation balance in subjects with severe forms of COVID-19.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on global health, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of its diverse manifestations. Cholangiopathy, a condition characterized by biliary dysfunction, has emerged as a significant complication in COVID-19 patients. In this review, we report the epidemiology of COVID-19, describe the hepatotropism of SARS-CoV-2, and present the histopathology of acute liver injury (ALI) in COVID-19. Additionally, we explore the relationship between pre-existing chronic liver disease and COVID-19, shedding light on the increased susceptibility of these individuals to develop cholangiopathy. Through an in-depth analysis of cholangiopathy in COVID-19 patients, we elucidate its clinical manifestations, diagnostic criteria, and underlying pathogenesis involving inflammation, immune dysregulation, and vascular changes. Furthermore, we provide a summary of studies investigating post-COVID-19 cholangiopathy, highlighting the long-term effects and potential management strategies for this condition, and discussing opportunities for intervention, including therapeutic targets, diagnostic advancements, supportive care, and future research needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although most patients can recover from SARS-CoV-2 infection during the short-term, the long-term effects of COVID-19 on the brain remain explored. Functional MRI (fMRI) could potentially elucidate or otherwise contribute to the investigation of the long COVID syndrome. A lower fMRI response would be translated into decreased brain activity or delayed signal transferring reflecting decreased connectivity. This research aimed to investigate the long-term alterations in the local (regional) brain activity and remote (interregional) functional connection in recovered COVID-19. METHODS Thirty-five previously hospitalized COVID-19 patients underwent 3D T1weighed imaging and resting-state fMRI at 6-month follow-up, and 36 demographic-matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited accordingly. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was used to assess the regional intrinsic brain activity and the influence of regional disturbances on FC with other brain regions. Spearman correlation analyses were performed to evaluate the association between brain function changes and clinical variables. RESULTS The incidence of neurosymptoms (6/35, 17.14%) decreased significantly at 6-month follow-up, compared with COVID-19 hospitalization stage (21/35, 60%). Compared with HCs, recovered COVID-19 exhibited higher ALFF in right precuneus, middle temporal gyrus, middle and inferior occipital gyrus, lower ALFF in right middle frontal gyrus and bilateral inferior temporal gyrus. Furthermore, setting seven abnormal activity regions as seeds, we found increased FC between right middle occipital gyrus and left inferior occipital gyrus, and reduced FC between right inferior occipital gyrus and right inferior temporal gyrus/bilateral fusiform gyrus, and between right middle frontal gyrus and right middle frontal gyrus/ supplementary motor cortex/ precuneus. Additionally, abnormal ALFF and FC were associated with clinical variables. CONCLUSIONS COVID-19 related neurological symptoms can self heal over time. Recovered COVID-19 presented functional alterations in right frontal, temporal and occipital lobe at 6-month follow-up. Most regional disturbances in ALFF were related to the weakening of short-range regional interactions in the same brain function.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has several extrapulmonary symptoms. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are among the most frequent clinical manifestations of COVID-19, with severe consequences reported in elderly patients. Furthermore, the impact of COVID-19 on patients with pre-existing digestive diseases still needs to be fully elucidated, particularly in the older population. This review aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the GI tract, liver, and pancreas in individuals with and without previous digestive diseases, with a particular focus on the elderly, highlighting the distinctive characteristics observed in this population. Finally, the effectiveness and adverse events of the anti-COVID-19 vaccination in patients with digestive disorders and the peculiarities found in the elderly are discussed.

Abstract
In addition to being the primary target of infections such as viral hepatitis, the liver may also be affected by systemic disease. These include bacterial, mycotic, and viral infections, as well as autoimmune and infiltrative diseases. These conditions generally manifest as abnormal liver biochemistries, often with a cholestatic profile, and may present with additional signs/symptoms such as jaundice and fever. A high index of suspicion and familiarity with potential causal entities is necessary to guide appropriate testing, diagnosis, and treatment.

Abstract
Liver is unlikely the key organ driving mortality in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) however, liver function tests (LFTs) abnormalities are widely observed mostly in moderate and severe cases. According to this review, the overall prevalence of abnormal LFTs in COVID-19 patients ranges from 2.5% to 96.8% worldwide. The geographical variability in the prevalence of underlying diseases is the determinant for the observed discrepancies between East and West. Multifactorial mechanisms are implicated in COVID-19-induced liver injury. Among them, hypercytokinemia with "bystander hepatitis", cytokine storm syndrome with subsequent oxidative stress and endotheliopathy, hypercoagulable state and immuno-thromboinflammation are the most determinant mechanisms leading to tissue injury. Liver hypoxia may also contribute under specific conditions, while direct hepatocyte injury is an emerging mechanism. Except for initially observed severe acute respiratory distress syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) tropism for cholangiocytes, more recent cumulative data show SARS-CoV-2 virions within hepatocytes and sinusoidal endothelial cells using electron microscopy (EM). The best evidence for hepatocellular invasion by the virus is the identification of replicating SARS-CoV-2 RNA, S protein RNA and viral nucleocapsid protein within hepatocytes using in-situ hybridization and immunostaining with observed intrahepatic presence of SARS-CoV-2 by EM and by in-situ hybridization. New data mostly derived from imaging findings indicate possible long-term sequelae for the liver months after recovery, suggesting a post-COVID-19 persistent live injury.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) initially presented as a disease that affected the lungs. Then, studies revealed that it intricately affected disparate organs in the human body, with the liver being one of the most affected organs. This review aimed to assess the association between COVID-19 and liver function, shedding light on its clinical implication. However, its exact pathophysiology remains unclear, involving many factors, such as active viral replication in the liver cells, direct cytotoxic effects of the virus on the liver or adverse reactions to viral antigens. Liver symptoms are mild-to-moderate transaminase elevation. In some patients, with underlying liver disease, more serious outcomes are observed. Thus, liver function should be meticulously considered in patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses an extremely serious global impact on public healthcare for individuals of all ages, including children. Increasing evidence has shown that liver abnormalities are commonly found in children with COVID-19, and age-related features in innate and adaptive response have been demonstrated. However, there are few reports and studies on COVID-19 related liver injury in children, and the data are scattered. So that many contradictions have arose. This situation is not only due to the serious ethical issues in studying pediatric patients with COVID-19, but also because of the short duration and wide coverage of the COVID-19 epidemic, the severity and complexity of clinical cases varied, as did the inclusion criteria for case reporting and patient outcomes. Therefore, we totaled the incidences, characteristics and pathomechanism of liver injury in children since the COVID-19 outbreak. The etiology of COVID-19-related liver injury is divided into three categories: (1) The direct mechanism involves severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 in the liver or bile duct to exert direct toxicity; (2) the indirect mechanisms include an inflammatory immune response and hypoxia; and (3) COVID-19-related treatments, such as mechanical ventilation and antiviral drugs, may cause liver injury. In summary, this minireview provides fundamental insights into COVID-19 and liver dysfunction in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), causal agent of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has infected millions of people worldwide. Currently, the scientific community debates on the direct viral responsibility of liver damage or whether the observed changes are secondary manifestations of systemic inflammation triggered by COVID-19. The hepatic involvement is associated with worse clinical outcomes and higher risk of COVID-19 related morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, SARS-CoV-2 infection may predispose patients to thrombotic disease due to excessive inflammation, platelet activation, and endothelial dysfunction. METHODS In this paper, we reported a cross-sectional analysis of five patients affected by a severe form of COVID-19, who died between April 11 and May 1, 2020. Each patient has been subjected to a medico-legal autopsy in which both gross and histological liver changes were evaluated, as well as the correlation with the related coagulation profile. RESULTS In three cases of our cohort, the thromboembolism was recognized as cause of death. Furthermore, a significant statistical difference between D-dimer values at hospital admission and death among enrolled patients (P=0.033), was evaluated. No patient has recorded a pre-existing liver disease. CONCLUSIONS Our results support the evidence that hepatic damage in subjects with severe form of COVID-19 is related to the changes in coagulative and fibrinolytic pathways. Hence, the evaluation of D-dimer blood levels may be useful in clinical practice to predict the involvement of the liver and the prognosis of these patients. This data highlights the fundamental role of coagulation balance in subjects with advanced form of COVID-19.

Abstract
We explored the shared pathophysiological mechanisms between COVID-19 and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by integrating multi-omics data. We studied common genetic risk factors and underlying biological processes using functional enrichment analysis. To understand the sex-specific pathways involved in the clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infection, we processed sex-stratified data from COVID-19 genome-wide association datasets. We further explored the transcriptional signature of the liver cells in healthy and COVID-19 tissue specimens. We also integrated genetic and metabolomic information. We found that COVID-19 and NAFLD share biological disease mechanisms, including pathways that regulate the inflammatory and lipopolysaccharide response. Single-cell transcriptomics revealed enrichment of complement-related pathways in Kupffer cells, syndecan-mediated signalling in plasma cells, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in hepatic stellate cells. The strategy of pathway-level analysis of genomic and metabolomic data uncovered l-lactic acid, Krebs cycle intermediate compounds, arachidonic acid and cortisol among the most prominent shared metabolites.

Abstract
The new coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was identified in December 2019, in Wuhan, China. The virus was rapidly spread worldwide, causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Although COVID-19 is presented, usually, with typical respiratory symptoms (i.e., dyspnea, cough) and fever, extrapulmonary manifestations are also encountered. Liver injury is a common feature in patients with COVID-19 and ranges from mild and temporary elevation of liver enzymes to severe liver injury and, even, acute liver failure. The pathogenesis of liver damage is not clearly defined; multiple mechanisms contribute to liver disorder, including direct cytopathic viral effect, cytokine storm and immune-mediated hepatitis, hypoxic injury, and drug-induced liver toxicity. Patients with underlying chronic liver disease (i.e., cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, etc.) may have greater risk to develop both severe COVID-19 and further liver deterioration, and, as a consequence, certain issues should be considered during disease management. The aim of this review is to present the prevalence, clinical manifestation and pathophysiological mechanisms of liver injury in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, we overview the association between chronic liver disease and SARS-CoV-2 infection and we briefly discuss the management of liver injury during COVID-19.

Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) impacted the world and caused the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The clinical manifestations of the virus can vary from patient to patient, depending on their respective immune system and comorbidities. SARS-CoV-2 can affect patients through two mechanisms: directly by targeting specific receptors or by systemic mechanisms. We reviewed data in the latest literature in order to discuss and determine the risk of new-onset liver injuries due to COVID-19 in preexisting hepatic conditions. The particular expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors is an additional risk factor for patients with liver disease. COVID-19 causes more severe forms in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), increases the risk of cirrhosis decompensation, and doubles the mortality for these patients. The coinfection SARS-CoV-2-viral hepatitis B or C might have different outcomes depending on the stage of the liver disease. Furthermore, the immunosuppressant treatment administered for COVID-19 might reactivate the hepatic virus. The high affinity of SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins for cholangiocytes results in a particular type of secondary sclerosing cholangitis. The impact of COVID-19 infection on chronic liver disease patients is significant, especially in cirrhosis, influencing the prognosis and outcome of these patients.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in critically ill COVID-19 patients. There is currently no generally recognized method of assessing gastrointestinal injury in unconscious or sedated intensive care unit (ICU) patients. I-FABP (intestinal fatty acid binding protein) and citrulline have previously been studied as potential biomarkers of enterocyte damage in various gastrointestinal tract diseases, and changes in the levels of these markers may reflect intestinal wall damage in COVID-19. Patients with critical COVID-19, with diagnosed sepsis, or septic shock requiring ICU treatment were included in the study. Blood samples for citrulline and I-FABP were taken daily from day 1 to 5. I-FABP levels were significantly higher in patients who eventually died from COVID-19 than in survivors, and the optimal I-FABP cut-off point for predicting 28-day mortality was 668.57 pg/mL (sensitivity 0.739, specificity 0.765). Plasma levels of I-FABP, but not citrulline, were associated with significantly higher mortality and appeared to be a predictor of poor outcome in multivariate logistic regression analysis. In conclusion, I-FABP seems to be an effective prognostic marker in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Assessing mortality risk based on intestinal markers may be helpful in making clinical decisions regarding the management of intestinal injury, imaging diagnostics, and potential surgical interventions.

Abstract
COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection affects humans not only during the acute phase of the infection, but also several weeks to 2 years after the recovery. SARS-CoV-2 infects a variety of cells in the human body, including lung cells, intestinal cells, vascular endothelial cells, olfactory epithelial cells, etc. The damages caused by the infections of these cells and enduring immune response are the basis of long COVID. Notably, the changes in gene expression caused by viral infection can also indirectly contribute to long COVID. We summarized the occurrences of both common and uncommon long COVID, including damages to lung and respiratory system, olfactory and taste deficiency, damages to myocardial, renal, muscle, and enduring inflammation. Moreover, we provided potential treatments for long COVID symptoms manifested in different organs and systems, which were based on the pathogenesis and the associations between symptoms in different organs. Importantly, we compared the differences in symptoms and frequency of long COVID caused by breakthrough infection after vaccination and infection with different variants of concern, in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of long COVID and propose improvement for tackling COVID-19.

Comparison of liver function test- and inflammation-based prognostic scores for coronavirus disease 2019: a single center study. Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2022; 34:1165-1171. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although several liver- and inflammation-based scores to predict the clinical course of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been evaluated, no direct comparison regarding their predictive ability has been performed. METHODS 1038 patients (608 males, age 63.5 ± 17 years) hospitalized with documented COVID-19 infection to the non-ICU ward, were included retrospectively. Clinical and laboratory characteristics on admission including evaluation of Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) to albumin ratio (CAR) were recorded. RESULTS One hundred and twenty-four patients (11.9%) died during hospitalization after 8 (3-72) days. In multivariate analysis, FIB-4 (hazard ratio, 1.11; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.034-1.19; P = 0.004), was independently associated with mortality, with very good discriminative ability (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve curve, 0.76). The patients with FIB-4 &gt;2.67 (n = 377), compared to those with ≤2.67 (n = 661), had worse survival (log-rank 32.6; P &lt; 0.001). Twenty-four (6.8%) of 352 patients with possible nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (defined as Hepatic Steatosis Index &gt;36) died during hospitalization. In multivariate analysis, CAR was an independent risk factor (1) for mortality (hazard ratio, 1.014; 95% CI, 1.002-1.025; P = 0.021), (2) the need for high-flow nasal cannula with or without intubation (hazard ratio, 1.016; 95% CI, 1.004-1.027; P = 0.007) and (3) development of acute kidney injury (hazard ratio, 1.017; 95% CI, 1.006-1.028; P = 0.002). In addition, the patients with possible NAFLD and CAR &gt;12 (n = 154), compared to those with CAR ≤12 (n = 198), had worse survival (log-rank 5.1; P = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS FIB-4 was an independent factor for mortality with better performance compared to other liver function test- and inflammation-based scores in patients with COVID-19, while CAR was the only score independently associated with the clinical course in COVID-19 patients with possible NAFLD.

Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease 2019 is an infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and was declared a global pandemic with more than 500 million reported cases and more than 6 million deaths worldwide to date. Although it has transitioned into the endemic phase in many countries, the mortality rate and overall prognosis of the disease are still abysmal and need further improvement. There has been evidence that shows the significance of SARS-CoV-2-related liver injury. Here, we review the literature on the various spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced liver injury and the possible mechanisms of damage to the hepatobiliary system. This review aimed to illustrate the latest understanding regarding SARS-CoV-2-induced liver injury including the high-risk populations, the characteristic clinical manifestations, the possible pathogenic mechanism, the pathological changes, the current suggestions for clinical treatment for various spectrum of populations, and the prognosis of the condition. In conclusion, SARS-CoV-2 patients with a liver injury warrant close monitoring as it is associated with the more severe and poorer outcome of the infection.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease outbreak of 2019 (COVID-19) poses a serious threat to public health worldwide. Lung injury is the most common complication of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. However, other organs, including the liver, can also be affected. Currently, there is limited evidence that liver impairment is associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. Clinicians will need to determine whether liver injury is caused by an underlying liver condition, COVID-19 therapy, the virus directly, or immune-mediated inflammation or represents a complicated disease course in the context of COVID-19. To address the scarcity of data on histopathological changes and immunological effects on the liver with COVID-19 positivity, we analyze and summarize recent findings. We searched PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to December 1, 2021, identifying published studies with the search terms "Histopathology in COVID-19," "COVID-19," "Pathological changes in liver in COVID-19," "Liver pathology in COVID-19," "immunological effects in liver in COVID-19," and "SARS-CoV-2." This concise review will aid clinicians and researchers in better understanding the tissue histopathology and immunological consequences of SARS-CoV-2 on the liver, enabling improved care planning and avoiding future dangers.

Abstract
Since BNT162b2 was approved to prevent COVID-19 in children, we aim to compare the safety and immunogenicity of the BNT162b2 vaccine in liver-transplanted (LT) and healthy adolescents. LT and healthy adolescents received two doses of 30 µg of BNT162b2. All were evaluated for total COVID-19 antibodies directed against the receptor-binding domain (RBD) and interferon-γ using the ELISpot at all time points; anti-nucleocapsid immunoglobulin was evaluated at week 8 and the surrogate virus-neutralizing antibody (sVN) to Omicron at day 0 and week 8. Adverse effects were recorded during days 0−7. In total, 16 LT and 27 healthy adolescents were enrolled (aged 14.78 ± 1.70 years). After completion, all LT and healthy adolescents were positive for anti-RBD immunoglobulin, with geometric mean titers of 1511.37 (95% CI 720.22−3171.59) and 6311.90 (95% CI 4955.46−8039.64)) U/mL (p < 0.001). All tested negative for anti-nucleocapsid immunoglobulin, indicating no COVID-19 infection after vaccination. However, the sVNs to Omicron were positive in only nine (33.33%) healthy adolescents and none of the LT adolescents. Interferon-γ-secreting cells were lower in LT adolescents than healthy adolescents. The LT adolescents had a lower immunogenic response to BNT162b2 than the healthy adolescents. Administrating two doses of BNT162b2 was safe, but was less effective against the Omicron variant.

Antibody Responses after SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination in Patients with Liver Diseases. Viruses 2022; 14:v14020207. Abstract
The novel mRNA-based vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 display encouraging safety and efficacy profiles. However, there is a paucity of data regarding their immunogenicity and safety in patients with liver diseases (PWLD), especially in those with cirrhosis. We prospectively assessed anti-SARS-CoV-2 S-spike IgG antibodies and neutralizing activity in fully vaccinated PWLD (n = 87) and controls (n = 40). Seroconversion rates were 97.4% (37/38) in cirrhotic PWLD, 87.8% (43/49) in non-cirrhotic PWLD and 100% (40/40) in controls. Adequate neutralizing activity was detected in 92.1% (35/38), 87.8% (43/49) and 100% (40/40) of cirrhotics, non-cirrhotics and controls, respectively. On multivariable analysis, immunosuppressive treatment was negatively correlated with anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody titers (coefficient (SE): −2.716 (0.634), p < 0.001) and neutralizing activity (coefficient (SE): −24.379 (4.582), p < 0.001), while age was negatively correlated only with neutralizing activity (coefficient (SE): −0.31(0.14), p = 0.028). A total of 52 responder PWLD were reassessed approximately 3 months post-vaccination and no differences were detected in humoral responses between cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic PWLD. No significant side effects were noted post vaccination, while no symptomatic breakthrough infections were reported during a 6-month follow up. Overall, our study shows that m-RNA-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are safe and efficacious in PWLD. However, PWLD under immunosuppressive treatment and those of advanced age should probably be more closely monitored after vaccination.

Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread worldwide, and the WHO declared it a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Clinical characteristics and epidemiology features of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 have been explored in the previous study. However, little is known about the combinative association of liver dysfunction and abnormal interleukins (ILs) in severe patients with COVID-19. This study was designed to estimate whether liver dysfunction and abnormal ILs could predict the severity of COVID-19. This study integrated liver function data and ILs data in patients with COVID-19 and found that liver injury and two ILs, interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), were closely related to the prognosis of patients with COVID-19. This study may give more exact information to clinicians about the prognosis of patients with COVID-19. In addition, this correlational study between liver disorder and ILs may provide a new vision to diagnosis and treatment in patients.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 has rapidly spread across the globe and infected hundreds of millions of people worldwide. As our experience with this virus continues to grow, our understanding of both short-term and long-term complications of infection with SARS-CoV-2 continues to grow as well. Just as there is heterogeneity in the acute infectious phase, there is heterogeneity in the long-term complications seen following COVID-19 illness. The purpose of this review article is to present the current literature with regards to the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and proposed management algorithms for the various long-term sequelae that have been observed in each organ system following infection with SARS-CoV-2. We will also consider future directions, with regards to newer variants of the virus and their potential impact on the long-term complications observed.
