A global pattern of thermal adaptation in marine phytoplankton

The impact of marine heatwaves on surface phytoplankton chlorophyll-a in the South China Sea

According to previous studies, marine heatwaves (MHWs) significantly suppress the phytoplankton chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl a) in tropical oceans. However, pre-MHW Chl a has rarely been considered as a reference value. In this study, the Chl a for the periods preceding and during MHWs events was used to explore the impact of MHWs on Chl a from 1998 to 2022 in the South China Sea (SCS). The Chl a response to MHWs in different regions was further discussed based on the Chl a variation characteristics. The results showed that the Chl a response to MHWs exhibited regional variability. Interestingly, there was a large proportion of positive Chl a anomalies (∼0.55) in the estuary and offshore regions during MHWs; however, Chl a anomalies were mostly negative in the upwelling regions. These different response patterns are related to background conditions, including nutrient concentrations, wind-driven dynamics, and light availability. In upwelling regions, negative Chl a anomalies were primarily due to the weakening of wind speeds, Ekman pumping velocities, and upwelling intensities. In estuarine regions, positive Chl a anomalies were caused by enhanced light availability, whereas in offshore regions, there were attributed to the increased atmospheric wet deposition. These results have improved our understanding of the impact of MHWs on marine ecosystems.

From nets to networks: tools for deciphering phytoplankton metabolic interactions within communities and their global significance

Our oceans are populated with a wide diversity of planktonic organisms that form complex dynamic communities at the base of marine trophic networks. Within such communities are phytoplankton, unicellular photosynthetic taxa that provide an estimated half of global primary production and support biogeochemical cycles, along with other essential ecosystem services. One of the major challenges for microbial ecologists has been to try to make sense of this complexity. While phytoplankton distributions can be well explained by abiotic factors such as temperature and nutrient availability, there is increasing evidence that their ecological roles are tightly linked to their metabolic interactions with other plankton members through complex mechanisms (e.g. competition and symbiosis). Therefore, unravelling phytoplankton metabolic interactions is the key for inferring their dependency on, or antagonism with, other taxa and better integrating them into the context of carbon and nutrient fluxes in marine trophic networks. In this review, we attempt to summarize the current knowledge brought by ecophysiology, organismal imaging, in silico predictions and co-occurrence networks using 'omics data, highlighting successful combinations of approaches that may be helpful for future investigations of phytoplankton metabolic interactions within their complex communities.This article is part of the theme issue 'Connected interactions: enriching food web research by spatial and social interactions'.

A functional-group-based perspective on the response of marine phytoplankton to mesoscale eddies

This study analyzed the response of marine phytoplankton to environmental changes induced by mesoscale warm eddies through the lens of functional groups, highlighting the complex interactions within the ecosystem. It was found that warm eddies significantly affected phytoplankton distribution, with cell abundance in the center being only 75.60 cells/L, compared to 1095.00 cells/L in the periphery. Vertical transport within warm eddies altered light conditions, affecting photophilic diatoms more, while increased temperatures favored the growth of warm-water dinoflagellates. This study also emphasized that ocean currents were significant factors, showing correlations with various functional groups and playing a key role in material transport and phytoplankton distribution. Additionally, the distinct responses of different functional groups to temperature and salinity underscored their unique adaptations to environmental changes. In periods without warm eddies, phytoplankton primarily congregated in shallower water layers.

Direct and indirect cumulative effects of temperature, nutrients, and light on phytoplankton growth

Temperature and resource availability are pivotal factors influencing phytoplankton community structures. Numerous prior studies demonstrated their significant influence on phytoplankton stoichiometry, cell size, and growth rates. The growth rate, serving as a reflection of an organism's success within its environment, is linked to stoichiometry and cell size. Consequently, alterations in abiotic conditions affecting cell size or stoichiometry also exert indirect effects on growth. However, such results have their limitations, as most studies used a limited number of factors and factor levels which gives us limited insights into how phytoplankton respond to environmental conditions, directly and indirectly. Here, we tested for the generality of patterns found in other studies, using a combined multiple-factor gradient design and two single species with different size characteristics. We used a structural equation model (SEM) that allowed us to investigate the direct cumulative effects of temperature and resource availability (i.e., light, N and P) on phytoplankton growth, as well as their indirect effects on growth through changes in cell size and cell stoichiometry. Our results mostly support the results reported in previous research thus some effects can be identified as dominant effects. We identified rising temperature as the dominant driver for cell size reduction and increase in growth, and nutrient availability (i.e., N and P) as dominant factor for changes in cellular stoichiometry. However, indirect effects of temperature and resources (i.e., light and nutrients) on species' growth rates through cell size and cell stoichiometry differed across the two species suggesting different strategies to acclimate to its environment.

Elevated temperature alters bacterial community from mutualism to antagonism with Skeletonema costatum: insights into the role of a novel species, Tamlana sp. MS1

Skeletonema costatum, a cosmopolitan diatom primarily inhabiting coastal ecosystems, exhibits a typically close yet variable relationship with heterotrophic bacteria. The increasing temperature of surface seawater is expected to substantially affect the viability and ecological dynamics of S. costatum, potentially altering its relationship with bacteria. However, it remains unclear to what extent the elevated temperature could change these relationships. Here, the relationship between axenic S. costatum and natural seawater bacteria underwent a dramatic shift from mutualism to antagonism as the co-culture temperature increased from 20°C to 25°C. The co-occurrence network indicated significantly increased complexity of interaction between S. costatum and bacteria community after temperature elevation, especially with Flavobacteriaceae, implying their potential role in eliminating S. costatum under higher temperatures. Additionally, a Flavobacteriaceae isolate, namely MS1 identified as Tamlana genus, was isolated from the co-culture system at 25°C. MS1 had a remarkable ability to eliminate S. costatum, with the mortality rate at 25°C steadily rising from 30.2% at 48 h to 92.4% at 120 h. However, it promoted algal growth to some extent at 20°C. These results demonstrated that increased temperature promotes MS1 shifts from mutualism to antagonism with S. costatum. According to the comparative genomics analysis, changes in the lifestyle of MS1 were attributed to the increased gliding motility and attachment of MS1 under elevated temperature, enabling it to exert an algicidal effect through direct contact with alga. This investigation provided an advanced understanding of interactions between phytoplankton and bacteria in future warming oceanic ecosystems.

IMPORTANCE

Ocean warming profoundly influences the growth and metabolism of phytoplankton and bacteria, thereby significantly reshaping their interactions. Previous studies have shown that warming can change bacterial lifestyle from mutualism to antagonism with phytoplankton, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we found that high temperature promotes Tamlana sp. MS1 adhesion to Skeletonema costatum, leading to algal lysis through direct contact, demonstrating a transition in lifestyle from mutualism to antagonism with increasing temperature. Furthermore, the gliding motility of MS1 appears to be pivotal in mediating the transition of its lifestyle. These findings not only advance our understanding of the phytoplankton-bacteria relationship under ocean warming but also offer valuable insights for predicting the impact of warming on phytoplankton carbon sequestration.

Assessing the global distribution and risk of harmful microalgae: A focus on three toxic Alexandrium dinoflagellates

Harmful dinoflagellates and their resulting blooms pose a threat to marine life and human health. However, to date, global maps of marine life often overlook harmful microorganisms. As harmful algal blooms (HABs) increase in frequency, severity, and extent, understanding the distribution of harmful dinoflagellates and their drivers is crucial for their management. We used MaxEnt, random forest, and ensemble models to map the habitats of the representative HABs species in the genus Alexandrium, including A. catenella, A. minutum, and A. pacificum. Since species occurrence records used in previous studies were solely morphology-based, potentially leading to misidentifications, we corrected these species' distribution records using molecular criteria. The results showed that the key environmental drivers included the distance to the coastline, bathymetry, sea surface temperature (SST), and dissolved oxygen. Alexandrium catenella thrives in temperate to cold zones and is driven by low SST and high oxygen levels. Alexandrium pacificum mainly inhabits the Temperate Northern Pacific and prefers warmer SST and lower oxygen levels. Alexandrium minutum thrives universally and adapts widely to SST and oxygen. By analyzing the habitat suitability of locations with recorded HAB occurrences, we found that high habitat suitability could serve as a reference indicator for bloom risk. Therefore, we have proposed a qualitative method to spatially assess the harmful algae risk according to the habitat suitability. On the global risk map, coastal temperate seas, such as the Mediterranean, Northwest Pacific, and Southern Australia, faced higher risks. Although HABs currently have restricted geographic distributions, our study found these harmful algae possess high environmental tolerance and can thrive across diverse habitats. HAB impacts could increase if climate changes or ocean conditions became more favorable. Marine transportation may also spread the harmful algae to new unaffected ecosystems. This study has pioneered the assessment of harmful algal risk based on habitat suitability.

Effectiveness of artificial reefs in enhancing phytoplankton community dynamics: A meta-analysis

Artificial reefs (ARs) are widespread globally and play a positive role in enhancing fish communities and restoring habitat. However, the effect of ARs on phytoplankton, which are fundamental to the marine food chain, remains inconclusive. Conducting a literature review and meta-analysis, this study investigates how ARs influence phytoplankton community dynamics by comparing the biomass, density, and diversity of phytoplankton between ARs and natural water bodies across varying deployment durations, constituent materials, and climatic zones. The study findings suggest that, overall, ARs enhance the biomass, density, and diversity of phytoplankton communities, with no significant differences observed compared to natural water bodies. The enhancement effect of ARs on phytoplankton communities becomes progressively more pronounced with increasing deployment time, with the overall status of phytoplankton communities being optimal when artificial reefs are deployed for 5 years or longer. Concrete and stone ARs can significantly enhance the biomass and diversity of phytoplankton, respectively. The effect of ARs on phytoplankton diversity is unrelated to climatic zones. However, deploying ARs in temperate waters significantly enhances phytoplankton biomass, while in tropical waters, it significantly reduces phytoplankton density. The research findings provide practical implications for the formulation of artificial reef construction strategies tailored to the characteristics of different aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing the need for long-term deployment and appropriate material selection. This study offers a theoretical basis for optimizing AR design and deployment to achieve maximum ecological benefits.

Genomic sequencing reveals convergent adaptation during experimental evolution in two budding yeast species

Convergent evolution is central in the origins of multicellularity. Identifying the basis for convergent multicellular evolution is challenging because of the diverse evolutionary origins and environments involved. Haploid Kluyveromyces lactis populations evolve multicellularity during selection for increased settling in liquid media. Strong genomic and phenotypic convergence is observed between K. lactis and previously selected S. cerevisiae populations under similar selection, despite their >100-million-year divergence. We find K. lactis multicellularity is conferred by mutations in genes ACE2 or AIM44, with ACE2 being predominant. They are a subset of the six genes involved in the S. cerevisiae multicellularity. Both ACE2 and AIM44 regulate cell division, indicating that the genetic convergence is likely due to conserved cellular replication mechanisms. Complex population dynamics involving multiple ACE2/AIM44 genotypes are found in most K. lactis lineages. The results show common ancestry and natural selection shape convergence while chance and contingency determine the degree of divergence.

Global biogeography of microbes driving ocean ecological status under climate change

Microbial communities play a crucial role in ocean ecology and global biogeochemical processes. However, understanding the intricate interactions among diversity, taxonomical composition, functional traits, and how these factors respond to climate change remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose seven distinct ecological statuses by systematically considering the diversity, structure, and biogeochemical potential of the ocean microbiome to delineate their biogeography. Anthropogenic climate change is expected to alter the ecological status of the surface ocean by influencing environmental conditions, particularly nutrient and oxygen contents. Our predictive model, which utilizes machine learning, indicates that the ecological status of approximately 32.44% of the surface ocean may undergo changes from the present to the end of this century, assuming no policy interventions. These changes mainly include poleward shifts in the main taxa, increases in photosynthetic carbon fixation and decreases in nutrient metabolism. However, this proportion can decrease significantly with effective control of greenhouse gas emissions. Our study underscores the urgent necessity for implementing policies to mitigate climate change, particularly from an ecological perspective.

New avenues for potentially seeking microbial responses to climate change beneath Antarctic ice shelves

The signs of climate change are undeniable, and the impact of these changes on ecosystem function heavily depends on the response of microbes that underpin the food web. Antarctic ice shelf is a massive mass of floating ice that extends from the continent into the ocean, exerting a profound influence on global carbon cycles. Beneath Antarctic ice shelves, marine ice stores valuable genetic information, where marine microbial communities before the industrial revolution are archived. Here, in this proof-of-concept, by employing a combination of single-cell technologiesand metagenomics, we have been able to sequence frozen microbial DNA (≈300 years old) stored in the marine ice core B15 collected from the Filchnner-Ronne Ice Shelf. Metagenomic data indicated that Proteobacteria and Thaumarchaeota (e.g., Nitrosopumilus spp.), followed by Actinobacteria (e.g., Actinomarinales), were abundant. Remarkably, our data allow us to "travel to the past" and calibrate genomic and genetic evolutionary changes for ecologically relevant microbes and functions, such as Nitrosopumilus spp., preserved in the marine ice (≈300 years old) with those collected recently in seawater under an ice shelf (year 2017). The evolutionary divergence for the ammonia monooxygenase gene amoA involved in chemolithoautotrophy was about 0.88 amino acid and 2.8 nucleotide substitution rate per 100 sites in a century, while the accumulated rate of genomic SNPs was 2,467 per 1 Mb of genome and 100 years. Whether these evolutionary changes remained constant over the last 300 years or accelerated during post-industrial periods remains an open question that will be further elucidated.

IMPORTANCE

Several efforts have been undertaken to predict the response of microbes under climate change, mainly based on short-term microcosm experiments under forced conditions. A common concern is that manipulative experiments cannot properly simulate the response of microbes to climate change, which is a long-term evolutionary process. In this proof-of-concept study with a limited sample size, we demonstrate a novel approach yet to be fully explored in science for accessing genetic information from putative past marine microbes preserved under Antarctic ice shelves before the industrial revolution. This potentially allows us estimating evolutionary changes as exemplified in our study. We advocate for gathering a more comprehensive Antarctic marine ice core data sets across various periods and sites. Such a data set would enable the establishment of a robust baseline, facilitating a better assessment of the potential effects of climate change on key genetic signatures of microbes.

Warming increases the compositional and functional variability of a temperate protist community

Phototrophic protists are a fundamental component of the world's oceans by serving as the primary source of energy, oxygen, and organic nutrients for the entire ecosystem. Due to the high thermal seasonality of their habitat, temperate protists could harbour many well-adapted species that tolerate ocean warming. However, these species may not sustain ecosystem functions equally well. To address these uncertainties, we conducted a 30-day mesocosm experiment to investigate how moderate (12 °C) and substantial (18 °C) warming compared to ambient conditions (6 °C) affect the composition (18S rRNA metabarcoding) and ecosystem functions (biomass, gross oxygen productivity, nutritional quality - C:N and C:P ratio) of a North Sea spring bloom community. Our results revealed warming-driven shifts in dominant protist groups, with haptophytes thriving at 12 °C and diatoms at 18 °C. Species responses primarily depended on the species' thermal traits, with indirect temperature effects on grazing being less relevant and phosphorus acting as a critical modulator. The species Phaeocystis globosa showed highest biomass on low phosphate concentrations and relatively increased in some replicates of both warming treatments. In line with this, the C:P ratio varied more with the presence of P. globosa than with temperature. Examining further ecosystem responses under warming, our study revealed lowered gross oxygen productivity but increased biomass accumulation whereas the C:N ratio remained unaltered. Although North Sea species exhibited resilience to elevated temperatures, a diminished functional similarity and heightened compositional variability indicate potential ecosystem repercussions for higher trophic levels. In conclusion, our research stresses the multifaceted nature of temperature effects on protist communities, emphasising the need for a holistic understanding that encompasses trait-based responses, indirect effects, and functional dynamics in the face of exacerbating temperature changes.

Heatwave responses of Arctic phytoplankton communities are driven by combined impacts of warming and cooling

Marine heatwaves are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change progresses, especially in the highly productive Arctic regions. Although their effects on primary producers will largely determine the impacts on ecosystem services, mechanistic understanding on phytoplankton responses to these extreme events is still very limited. We experimentally exposed Arctic phytoplankton assemblages to stable warming, as well as to repeated heatwaves, and measured temporally resolved productivity, physiology, and composition. Our results show that even extreme stable warming increases productivity, while the response to heatwaves depends on the specific scenario applied and is not predictable from stable warming responses. This appears to be largely due to the underestimated impact of the cool phase following a heatwave, which can be at least as important as the warm phase for the overall response. We show that physiological and compositional adjustments to both warm and cool phases drive overall phytoplankton productivity and need to be considered mechanistically to predict overall ecosystem impacts.

Multilevel relations among plankton stitched together with an eco-evolutionary needle

Power-law relationships between population abundances, energy use, and other factors are often referred to as macroecological scaling. A recent study convincingly shows that these relationships emerge from individual physiology but only after the population distribution is shaped by trophic interactions that are subject to both ecological and evolutionary pressures.

Ocean acidification and desalination increase the growth and photosynthesis of the diatom Skeletonema costatum isolated from the coastal water of the Yellow Sea

Global climate changes induce substantial alterations in the marine system, including ocean acidification (OA), desalination and warming of surface seawater. Here, we examined the combined effects of OA and reduced salinity under different temperatures on the growth and photosynthesis of the diatom Skeletonema costatum. After having been acclimated to 2 CO2 concentrations (400 μatm, 1000 μatm) and 2 salinity levels (20 psu, 30 psu) at temperature levels of 10 °C and 20 °C, the diatom showed enhanced growth rate at the lowered salinity and elevated pCO2 irrespective of the temperature. The OA treatment increased the net photosynthetic rate and biogenic silica (Bsi) contents. Increasing the temperature from 10 to 20 °C raised the net photosynthetic rate by over twofold. The elevated pCO2 increased the net and gross photosynthetic rates by 20%-40% and by 16%-32%, respectively, with the higher enhancement observed at the higher levels of salinity and temperature. Our results imply that OA and desalination along with warming to the levels tested can enhance S. costatum's competitiveness in coastal phytoplankton communities under influence of future climate changes.

Daily impact of the simultaneous passage of binary typhoons on sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration dynamics in the Northwestern Pacific

Typhoons are recognized as one of the most destructive meteorological phenomena, exerting significant influences on marine ecosystems. Sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL)an essential indicator of phytoplankton biomass, can be utilized to characterize the disturbances of typhoons on the marine ecosystem. However, it is challenging to investigate this impact at a daily scale due to the missing CHL remote sensing data caused by cloud cover. Given that concurrent passing typhoons may interact with CHL, this study analyzes the effect of the simultaneous passage of binary typhoons Tembin and Bolaven on CHL by using daily CHL reconstruction data, and investigates the role of ocean environmental factors in driving the dynamics of CHL, including sea surface temperature (SST), mixed layer depth (MLD), and sea surface height anomaly (SSHA). The results show that typhoons Tembin and Bolaven increase CHL with the maximum increment of ∼3.2 mg∙m-3 during 4-6 days after typhoons passage. The maximum change areas of CHL are distributed near the intersection of typhoon track of (32°N, 125.2°E), corresponding to the regions of greater variation in SST and MLD. During 15 days before and after typhoons (i.e., from 15 August to 15 September 2012), SST is negatively correlated with CHL (the correlation coefficient of -0.85) and MLD is positively correlated with CHL (the correlation coefficient of -0.80). SST immediately declines after typhoons with a maximum cooling of 7.8 deg. C, showing the decreased SST from ∼28 deg. C to ∼23 deg. C can promote phytoplankton growth. MLD deepens from 10 m to >25 m caused by typhoon-induced strong winds, allowing more nutrients to be transported from the subsurface layer to the euphotic layer for phytoplankton blooms. Furthermore, oceanic eddies captured by SSHA change from cyclonic to anticyclonic eddies accompanied by the beginning of CHL increases, and the largest CHL increases correspond to the distribution of pre-existing cyclonic eddies. It suggests that Tembin and Boravin promote phytoplankton growth to increase CHL by enhancing vertical mixing and upwelling to transport nutrients to the sea surface. These findings inspire us to rethink the daily effects of typhoons on CHL, with critical importance for predicting and managing the ecological consequences of typhoons in the ocean.

Multifunctionality promotes the prosperity of riverine planktonic diatoms in plateau

Interpreting the biogeographic distribution and underlying mechanisms of functional traits not only contributes to revealing the spatiotemporal dynamics of species biodiversity but also helps to maintain ecological stability during environmental variations. However, little is known about the functional profiles of diatom communities over large river systems. Herein, we provided the first blueprints about the spatiotemporal distributions and driving forces of functional traits for both planktonic and sedimentary diatoms over the 6030 km continuum of the Yangtze River, with the help of the high-throughput sequencing and functional identification. By investigating the 28 functional traits affiliated into five categories, we found that planktonic diatom functions showed clearer landform-heterogeneity patterns (ANOSIM R = 0.336) than sedimentary functions (ANOSIM R = 0.172) along the river, represented by life-forms and ecological-guilds prominent in water-plateau as well as cell-sizes and life-forms particularly in sediment-plateau. Planktonic diatom functions also displayed higher richness and network complexity in plateau (richness: 58.70 ± 9.30, network edges: 65) than in non-plateau regions (23.82 ± 13.16, 16), promoting the stability and robustness of diatom functions against the high-radiation and low-temperature plateau environment. Environmental selection (mainly exerted by PAR, UV, and Tw) played crucial roles in determining the functional variations of planktonic diatoms (explaining 80.5%) rather than sedimentary diatoms (14.5%) between plateau and non-plateau regions. Meanwhile, planktonic diatom traits within life-forms were identified to be well responsive to the ecological environment quality (r = 0.56-0.60, P < 0.001) in the Yangtze. This study provided comprehensive insights into the multifunctionality of diatoms and their responses to environmental disturbance and environment quality, which helps to develop effective strategies for maintaining ecological stability in changing river environments.

Bet hedging in a unicellular microalga

Understanding how organisms have adapted to persist in unpredictable environments is a fundamental goal in biology. Bet hedging, an evolutionary adaptation observed from microbes to humans, facilitates reproduction and population persistence in randomly fluctuating environments. Despite its prevalence, empirical evidence in microalgae, crucial primary producers and carbon sinks, is lacking. Here, we report a bet-hedging strategy in the unicellular microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. We show that isogenic populations reversibly diversify into heterophenotypic mobile and non-mobile cells independently of environmental conditions, likely driven by stochastic gene expression. Mobile cells grow faster but are stress-sensitive, while non-mobile cells prioritise stress resistance over growth. This is due to shifts from growth-promoting activities (cell division, photosynthesis) to resilience-promoting processes (thickened cell wall, cell enlargement, aggregation, accumulation of antioxidant and energy-storing compounds). Our results provide empirical evidence for bet hedging in a microalga, indicating the potential for adaptation to current and future environmental conditions and consequently conservation of ecosystem functions.

Warming underpins community turnover in temperate freshwater and terrestrial communities

Rising temperatures are leading to increased prevalence of warm-affinity species in ecosystems, known as thermophilisation. However, factors influencing variation in thermophilisation rates among taxa and ecosystems, particularly freshwater communities with high diversity and high population decline, remain unclear. We analysed compositional change over time in 7123 freshwater and 6201 terrestrial, mostly temperate communities from multiple taxonomic groups. Overall, temperature change was positively linked to thermophilisation in both realms. Extirpated species had lower thermal affinities in terrestrial communities but higher affinities in freshwater communities compared to those persisting over time. Temperature change's impact on thermophilisation varied with community body size, thermal niche breadth, species richness and baseline temperature; these interactive effects were idiosyncratic in the direction and magnitude of their impacts on thermophilisation, both across realms and taxonomic groups. While our findings emphasise the challenges in predicting the consequences of temperature change across communities, conservation strategies should consider these variable responses when attempting to mitigate climate-induced biodiversity loss.

Insight into the latitudinal gradient of biodiversity based on spatial variations in pelagic ciliate communities along the western Arctic Ocean

The latitudinal dynamics of biodiversity has been the focus of global attention. This study is based on the latitude gradient of biodiversity in the spatial changes of pelagic ciliate communities in the western Arctic Ocean. The gradient pattern of pelagic ciliate communities across four latitudes were investigated from the water surface at 22 sampling station in the northern Bering Sea of the western Arctic Ocean and Chukchi Sea from August 5 to August 24, 2016. Based on multivariate analyses, the results showed that (1) the spatial patterns of pelagic ciliates represented a significant latitudinal gradient along the western Arctic Ocean; (2) the species number and abundance of pelagic ciliate communities declined from 64°N to 80°N; (3) variations in the horizontal distribution of ciliates were significantly correlated with changes in physicochemical variables, especially water temperature and Chl a; Thus it is suggested that the expected latitudinal decline of biodiversity was evident along the western Arctic Ocean.

Warming exacerbates the impacts of ultraviolet radiation in temperate diatoms but alleviates the effect on polar species

Under global change scenarios, the sea surface temperature is increasing steadily along with other changes to oceanic environments. Consequently, marine diatoms are influenced by multiple ocean global change drivers. We hypothesized that temperature rise mediates the responses of polar and temperate diatoms to UV radiation (UVR) to different extents, and exposed the temperate centric diatoms, Thalassiosira weissflogii and Skeletonema costatum, and a polar pennate diatom Entomoneis sp., to warming (+5°C) for 10 days, then performed short-term incubations under different radiation treatments with or without UVR. The effective quantum yields of the three diatoms were stable during exposure to PAR, but decreased when exposed to PAR + UVR, leading to significant UV-induced inhibition, which was 3% and 9%, respectively, for T. weissflogii and S. costatum under ambient temperature but increased to 12% and 17%, respectively, in the cells acclimated to the warming treatment. In contrast, UVR induced much higher inhibition, by about 45%, in the polar diatom Entomoneis sp. at ambient temperature, and the warming treatment alleviated the UV-induced inhibition, which dropped to 36%. The growth rates were significantly inhibited by UVR in S. costatum under the warming treatment and in Entomoneis sp. under ambient temperature, while there was no significant effect for T. weissflogii. Our results indicate that the polar diatom was more sensitive to UVR though warming could alleviate its impact, whereas the temperate diatoms were less sensitive to UVR but warming exacerbated its impacts, implying that diatoms living in different regions may exhibit differential responses to global changes.

The effects of temperature and sulfamethoxazole on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Phaeodactylum tricornutum

The misuse of antibiotics has brought potential ecological risks to marine ecosystems, especially under a changing climate. Laboratory experiments were conducted to understand the impact of rising temperatures and antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) abuse on marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Temperatures of 21 and 24 °C were optimal for the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of P. tricornutum. When exposed to higher temperatures (≥27 °C), the growth and photosynthesis were inhibited. High concentrations of SMX (≥100 mg/L) caused rapid and acute toxicological effects on the phytoplankton. In contrast, low concentrations of SMX (1 mg/L) exhibited hormesis. When P. tricornutum was exposed to SMX at high temperatures, the stress on the phytoplankton was even more pronounced. This suggests that the combination of rising temperatures and antibiotic pollution may have a more significant negative impact on marine phytoplankton than either stressor alone. Neglecting the interaction between these stressors may lead to underestimating their combined effects on marine ecosystems.

Light and temperature controls of aquatic plant photosynthesis downstream of a hydropower plant and the effect of plant removal

Many rivers worldwide are regulated, and the altered hydrology can lead to mass development of aquatic plants. Plant invasions are often seen as a nuisance for human activities leading to costly remedial actions with uncertain implications for aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Mechanical harvesting is often used to remove aquatic plants and knowledge of plant growth rate could improve management decisions. Here, we used a simple light-temperature theoretical model to make a priori prediction of aquatic plant photosynthesis. These predictions were assessed through an open-channel diel change in O2 mass balance approach. A Michaelis-Menten type model was fitted to observed gross primary production (GPP) standardised at 10 °C using a temperature dependence from thermodynamic theory of enzyme kinetics. The model explained 87 % of the variability in GPP of a submerged aquatic plant (Juncus bulbosus L.) throughout an annual cycle in the River Otra, Norway. The annual net plant production was about 2.4 (1.0-3.8) times the standing biomass of J. bulbosus. This suggests a high continuous mass loss due to hydraulic stress and natural mechanical breakage of stems, as the biomass of J. bulbosus remained relatively constant throughout the year. J. bulbosus was predicted to be resilient to mechanical harvesting with photosynthetic capacity recovered within two years following 50-85 % plant removal. The predicted recovery was confirmed through a field experiment where 72 % of J. bulbosus biomass was mechanically removed. We emphasise the value of using a theoretical approach, like metabolic theory, over statistical models where a posteriori results are not always easy to interpret. Finally, the ability to predict ecosystem resilience of aquatic photosynthesis in response to varying management scenarios offers a valuable tool for estimating aquatic ecosystem services, such as carbon regulation. This tool can benefit the EU Biodiversity Strategy and UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Proteomics analysis reveals differential acclimation of coastal and oceanic Synechococcus to climate warming and iron limitation

In many oceanic regions, anthropogenic warming will coincide with iron (Fe) limitation. Interactive effects between warming and Fe limitation on phytoplankton physiology and biochemical function are likely, as temperature and Fe availability affect many of the same essential cellular pathways. However, we lack a clear understanding of how globally significant phytoplankton such as the picocyanobacteria Synechococcus will respond to these co-occurring stressors, and what underlying molecular mechanisms will drive this response. Moreover, ecotype-specific adaptations can lead to nuanced differences in responses between strains. In this study, Synechococcus isolates YX04-1 (oceanic) and XM-24 (coastal) from the South China Sea were acclimated to Fe limitation at two temperatures, and their physiological and proteomic responses were compared. Both strains exhibited reduced growth due to warming and Fe limitation. However, coastal XM-24 maintained relatively higher growth rates in response to warming under replete Fe, while its growth was notably more compromised under Fe limitation at both temperatures compared with YX04-1. In response to concurrent heat and Fe stress, oceanic YX04-1 was better able to adjust its photosynthetic proteins and minimize the generation of reactive oxygen species while reducing proteome Fe demand. Its intricate proteomic response likely enabled oceanic YX04-1 to mitigate some of the negative impact of warming on its growth during Fe limitation. Our study highlights how ecologically-shaped adaptations in Synechococcus strains even from proximate oceanic regions can lead to differing physiological and proteomic responses to these climate stressors.

Ethnobotanical, ecological and health risk assessment of some selected wild medicinal plants collected along mafic and Ultra Mafic rocks of Northwest Pakistan

The current study investigated wild plant resources and health risk assessment along with northern Pakistan's mafic and ultramafic regions. Ethnobotanical data was collected through field visits and semi-structured questionnaire surveys conducted from local inhabitants and healers. Six potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) were extracted with acids and analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS, Perkin Elmer-7000) in nine selected wild medicinal plants. Contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI) were used to determine the health risk assessment of the studied medicinal plants. The results showed that the selected medicinal plants were used for the treatments of cough, joint swelling, cardiovascular disorders, toothaches, diabetes, and skin pimples by the local inhabitants due to their low-cost and easy accessibility. The concentrations of Pb (3.4-53 mg kg-1), Cd (0.03-0.39 mg kg-1), Ni (17.5-82 mg kg-1), Cr (29-315 mg kg-1), Mn (20-142 mg kg-1), and Zn (7.4-64 mg kg-1) in the studied medicinal plants were found above the safe limits (except Zn) set by WHO/FAO/USEPA (1984/2010). The Pb contamination factor was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in A. modesta (7.84) and D. viscosa (6.81), and Cd contamination factor was significantly higher in C. officinalis (26.67), followed by A. modesta (8.0) mg kg-1. Based on PTE concentrations, the studied plants are considered not suitable for human consumption purposes. Pollution load index values for A. modesta, A. barbadensis, A. caudatus, A. indica, C. procera (2.93), D. viscosa (2.79), and C. officinalis (2.83), R. hastatus (3.12), and Z. armatum were observed as 1.00, 2.80, 2.29, 2.29, 2.93, 2.79, 2.83, 3.12 and 2.19, respectively. Hazard index values were in order of R. hastatus (1.32 × 10-1) ˃ C. procera (1.21 × 10-1) ˃ D. viscosa (1.10 × 10-1) ˃ A. caudatus (9.11 × 10-2) ˃ A. barbadensis (8.66 × 10-2) ˃ Z. armatum (7.99 × 10-2) ˃ A. indica (6.87 × 10-2) ˃ A. modesta (5.6 × 10-2) ˃ C. officinalis (5.42 × 10-2). The health risk index values suggested that consumption of these plants individually or in combination would cause severe health problems in the consumers. Pearson's correlation results showed a significant correlation (p ≤ 0.001) between Zn and Mn in the studied medicinal plants. The current study suggests that wild medicinal plants should be adequately addressed for PTEs and other carcinogenic pollutants before their uses in the study area. Open dumping of mining waste should be banned and eco-friendly technology like organic amendments application should be used to mitigate PTEs in the study area.

How does evolution work in superabundant microbes?

Marine phytoplankton play crucial roles in the Earth's ecological, chemical, and geological processes. They are responsible for about half of global primary production and drive the ocean biological carbon pump. Understanding how plankton species may adapt to the Earth's rapidly changing environments is evidently an urgent priority. This problem requires evolutionary genetic approaches as evolution occurs at the level of allele frequency change within populations driven by genetic drift and natural selection (microevolution). Plankters such as the coccolithophore Gephyrocapsa huxleyi and the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus 'marinus' are among Earth's most abundant organisms. In this opinion paper we discuss how evolution in astronomically large populations of superabundant microbes (SAMs) may act fundamentally differently than it does in the populations of more modest size found in well-studied organisms. This offers exciting opportunities to study evolution in the conditions that have yet to be explored and also leads to unique challenges. Exploring these opportunities and challenges is the goal of this article.

Thermal performance curves identify seasonal and site-specific variation in the development of Ecklonia radiata (Phaeophyceae) gametophytes and sporophytes

Rapid ocean warming is affecting kelp forests globally. While the sporophyte life stage has been well studied for many species, the microscopic life stages of laminarian kelps have been understudied, particularly regarding spatial and temporal variations in thermal tolerance and their interaction. We investigated the thermal tolerance of growth, survival, development, and fertilization of Ecklonia radiata gametophytes, derived from zoospores sampled from two sites in Tasmania, Australia, throughout a year, over a temperature gradient (3-30°C). For growth we found a relatively stable thermal optimum at ~20.5°C and stable thermal maxima (25.3-27.7°C). The magnitude of growth was highly variable and depended on season and site, with no consistent spatial pattern for growth and gametophyte size. Survival also had a relatively stable thermal optimum of ~17°C, 3°C below the optimum for growth. Gametophytes grew to single cells between 5 and 25°C, but sporophytes were only observed between 10 and 20°C, indicating reproductive failure outside this range. The results reveal complex effects of source population and season of collection on gametophyte performance in E. radiata, with implications when comparing results from material collected at different localities and times. In Tasmania, gametophytes grow considerably below the estimated thermal maxima and thermal optima that are currently only reached during summer heatwaves, whereas optima for survival (~17°C) are frequently reached and surpassed during heatwaves, which may affect the persistence and recruitment of E. radiata in a warmer climate.

Temperature driving vertical stratification regulates phytoplankton community structure in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea

To analyse the effects of physicochemical factors on the phytoplankton community in the Bohai Sea (BS) and Yellow Sea (YS), a investigation was conducted during 27 July to 10 August 2020. A sum of 156 species were identified in the BS and YS, including Bacillariophyta (69 species), Pyrrophyta (85 species) and Chrysophyta (2 species). The phytoplankton community were divided into four provinces according to Bray-Curtis similarity. In order to study the phytoplankton community in the BS and YS, we studied the phytoplankton community composition and their assembly mechanisms. The results showed that stochastic ecological processes had a greater effect on the province C community structure. The Raup-crick dissimilarity showed that deterministic factors had a greater effect on the province A, B and D communities structure. The habitat niche width results indicated that niche was larger in the province D, compared to the province A, B and C. Based on a structural equation model (SEM), we analyzed the effects of physicochemical factors on phytoplankton community structure and temperature was found to affect the phytoplankton community composition and structure by the vertical stratification. The result showed that temperature was an important parameter for phytoplankton abundance and revealed that temperature affected phytoplankton community structure by influencing the vertical stratification index (VSI) in the BS and YS.

Unprecedented phytoplankton blooms in autumn/winter in the southern Bohai Sea (China) due to high Yellow River discharge: Implications of extreme rainfall events

The occurrence of abnormal phytoplankton blooms is one of the significant changes in coastal ecosystems due to climate change. However, the underlying mechanism of such blooms remains poorly understood due to the complexity of the system. In this study, the data from numerous observations was used to elucidate the unprecedented phytoplankton blooms in the autumn and winter of 2021 in Laizhou Bay, a typical aquaculture bay in the southern Bohai Sea of China. The abundance of phytoplankton cells increased by more than tenfold in the southern waters compared to that in the same period from 2019 to 2020. The phytoplankton bloom was first observed in winter in the Bohai Sea, with the cell abundance in the southern bay exceeding 108 cells L-1 in December 2021. The diversity and evenness of phytoplankton communities decreased in the southern area. Cerataulina pelagica was the dominant algae, comprising 69 % of the total phytoplankton in October and 99 % in December. In autumn 2021, the largest flood of the Yellow River in recent decades occurred. This was attributed to extreme rainfall events within the river basin. The input of substantial riverine nutrients played a significant role in promoting phytoplankton blooms. Correlation analysis indicated the important cumulative impact of the Yellow River on phytoplankton blooms rather than a direct short-term effect. Numerical modeling results indicated that exceptionally high Yellow River discharge in autumn could significantly affect the entire bay from autumn to the following spring. This study may contribute to understanding the abnormal phytoplankton blooms in coastal waters and provide valuable insights for environmental management in river basins and coastal waters.

Hotter is not (always) better: Embracing unimodal scaling of biological rates with temperature

Rate-temperature scaling relationships have fascinated biologists for nearly two centuries and are increasingly important in our era of global climate change. These relationships are hypothesized to originate from the temperature-dependent kinetics of rate-limiting biochemical reactions of metabolism. Several prominent theories have formalized this hypothesis using the Arrhenius model, which characterizes a monotonic temperature dependence using an activation energy E. However, the ubiquitous unimodal nature of biological temperature responses presents important theoretical, methodological, and conceptual challenges that restrict the promise for insight, prediction, and progress. Here we review the development of key hypotheses and methods for the temperature-scaling of biological rates. Using simulations, we examine the constraints of monotonic models, illustrating their sensitivity to data nuances such as temperature range and noise, and their tendency to yield variable and underestimated E, with critical consequences for climate change predictions. We also evaluate the behaviour of two prominent unimodal models when applied to incomplete and noisy datasets. We conclude with recommendations for resolving these challenges in future research, and advocate for a shift to unimodal models that better characterize the full range of biological temperature responses.

Ocean climate and hydrodynamics drive decadal shifts in Northeast Atlantic dinoflagellates

The abundance of large marine dinoflagellates has declined in the North Sea since 1958. Although hypotheses have been proposed to explain this diminution (increasing temperature and wind), the mechanisms behind this pattern have thus far remained elusive. In this article, we study the long-term changes in dinoflagellate biomass and biodiversity in relation to hydro-climatic conditions and circulation within the North Atlantic. Our results show that the decline in biomass has paralleled an increase in biodiversity caused by a temperature-induced northward movement of subtropical taxa along the European shelf-edge, and facilitated by changes in oceanic circulation (subpolar gyre contraction). However, major changes in North Atlantic hydrodynamics in the 2010s (subpolar gyre expansion and low-salinity anomaly) stopped this movement, which triggered a biodiversity collapse in the North Sea. Further, North Sea dinoflagellate biomass remained low because of warming. Our results, therefore, reveal that regional climate warming and changes in oceanic circulation strongly influenced shifts in dinoflagellate biomass and biodiversity.

Effects of dispersal and temperature variability on phytoplankton realized temperature niches

Phytoplankton species exhibit fundamental temperature niches that drive observed species distributions linked to realized temperature niches. A recent analysis of field observations of Prochlorococcus showed that for all ecotypes, the realized niche was, on average, colder and wider than the fundamental niche. Using a simple trait-based metacommunity model that resolves fundamental temperature niches for a range of competing phytoplankton, we ask how dispersal and local temperature variability influence species distributions and diversity, and whether these processes help explain the observed discrepancies between fundamental and realized niches for Prochlorococcus. We find that, independently, both dispersal and temperature variability increase realized temperature niche widths and local diversity. The combined effects result in high diversity and realized temperature niches that are consistently wider than fundamental temperature niches. These results have broad implications for understanding the drivers of phytoplankton biogeography as well as for refining species distribution models used to project how climate change impacts phytoplankton distributions.

Cryptochrome PtCPF1 regulates high temperature acclimation of marine diatoms through coordination of iron and phosphorus uptake

Increasing ocean temperatures threaten the productivity and species composition of marine diatoms. High temperature response and regulation are important for the acclimation of marine diatoms to such environments. However, the molecular mechanisms behind their acclimation to high temperature are still largely unknown. In this study, the abundance of PtCPF1 homologs (a member of the cryptochrome-photolyase family in the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum) transcripts in marine phytoplankton is shown to increase with rising temperature based on Tara Oceans datasets. Moreover, the expression of PtCPF1 in P. tricornutum at high temperature (26 °C) was much higher than that at optimum temperature (20 °C). Deletion of PtCPF1 in P. tricornutum disrupted the expression of genes encoding two phytotransferrins (ISIP2A and ISIP1) and two Na+/P co-transporters (PHATRDRAFT_47667 and PHATRDRAFT_40433) at 26 °C. This further impacted the uptake of Fe and P, and eventually caused the arrest of cell division. Gene expression, Fe and P uptake, and cell division were restored by rescue with the native PtCPF1 gene. Furthermore, PtCPF1 interacts with two putative transcription factors (BolA and TF IIA) that potentially regulate the expression of genes encoding phytotransferrins and Na+/P co-transporters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to reveal PtCPF1 as an essential regulator in the acclimation of marine diatoms to high temperature through the coordination of Fe and P uptake. Therefore, these findings help elucidate how marine diatoms acclimate to high temperature.

Temperature dependence of competitive ability is cold-shifted compared to that of growth rate in marine phytoplankton

The effect of climate warming on community composition is expected to be contingent on competitive outcomes, yet approaches to projecting ecological outcomes often rely on measures of density-independent performance across temperatures. Recent theory suggests that the temperature response of competitive ability differs in shape from that of population growth rate. Here, we test this hypothesis empirically and find thermal performance curves of competitive ability in aquatic microorganisms to be systematically left-shifted and flatter compared to those of exponential growth rate. The minimum resource requirement for growth, R*-an inverse indicator of competitive ability-changes with temperature following a U-shaped pattern in all four species tested, contrasting from their left-skewed density-independent growth rate thermal performance curves. Our results provide new evidence that exploitative competitive success is highest at temperatures that are sub-optimal for growth, suggesting performance estimates of density-independent variables might underpredict performance in cooler competitive environments.

Phytoplankton thermal trait parameterization alters community structure and biogeochemical processes in a modeled ocean

Phytoplankton exhibit diverse physiological responses to temperature which influence their fitness in the environment and consequently alter their community structure. Here, we explored the sensitivity of phytoplankton community structure to thermal response parameterization in a modelled marine phytoplankton community. Using published empirical data, we evaluated the maximum thermal growth rates (μmax ) and temperature coefficients (Q10 ; the rate at which growth scales with temperature) of six key Phytoplankton Functional Types (PFTs): coccolithophores, cyanobacteria, diatoms, diazotrophs, dinoflagellates, and green algae. Following three well-documented methods, PFTs were either assumed to have (1) the same μmax and the same Q10 (as in to Eppley, 1972), (2) a unique μmax but the same Q10 (similar to Kremer et al., 2017), or (3) a unique μmax and a unique Q10 (following Anderson et al., 2021). These trait values were then implemented within the Massachusetts Institute of Technology biogeochemistry and ecosystem model (called Darwin) for each PFT under a control and climate change scenario. Our results suggest that applying a μmax and Q10 universally across PFTs (as in Eppley, 1972) leads to unrealistic phytoplankton communities, which lack diatoms globally. Additionally, we find that accounting for differences in the Q10 between PFTs can significantly impact each PFT's competitive ability, especially at high latitudes, leading to altered modeled phytoplankton community structures in our control and climate change simulations. This then impacts estimates of biogeochemical processes, with, for example, estimates of export production varying by ~10% in the Southern Ocean depending on the parameterization. Our results indicate that the diversity of thermal response traits in phytoplankton not only shape community composition in the historical and future, warmer ocean, but that these traits have significant feedbacks on global biogeochemical cycles.

Meta-analysis reveals responses of coccolithophores and diatoms to warming

A meta-analysis was conducted to explore the effects of warming on the physiological processes of coccolithophores and diatoms by synthesizing a large number of published literatures. A total of 154 studies consisting 301 experiments were synthesized in this study. Under a projected temperature increase of 3-5 °C by IPCC AR6 at the end of this century, our results suggest that the growth and photosynthetic rate of coccolithophores were significantly enhanced by the rising temperature, while the calcification of coccolithophores was only slightly promoted. Warming also had significantly positive effects on the growth but not photosynthesis of diatoms. In comparison, the effect size of warming on the growth rate of coccolithophores was larger than that of diatoms. However, there was no significant effect of warming on either the ratio of particulate inorganic carbon to particulate organic carbon (PIC:POC) of coccolithophores or the ratio of biogenic silica to carbon (BSi:C) of diatoms. Furthermore, the results reveal latitudinal and size-specific patterns of the effect sizes of warming. For diatoms, the effects of warming on growth were more prominent in high latitudes, specifically for the Southern Hemisphere species. In addition, the effect size of warming on the small-sized diatoms was larger than that of the large-sized diatoms. For coccolithophores, the growth of the Southern Hemisphere temperate strains was significantly promoted by warming. Overall, the results based on the meta-analysis indicate that the projected warming of the end of this century will be more favor to the growth of coccolithophores than that of diatoms, thus potentially affect the competitive advantages of coccolithophores over diatoms; while the mid-to high latitude species/strains of both coccolithophores and diatoms will benefit more than their counterparts in the lower latitudes. Therefore, this study offers novel insights into predicting both the inter- and intra-group competitive advantages of diatoms and coccolithophores under the future warming climate change scenario.

Oligotrophic waters of the Northwest Atlantic support taxonomically diverse diatom communities that are distinct from coastal waters

Diatoms are important components of the marine food web and one of the most species-rich groups of phytoplankton. The diversity and composition of diatoms in eutrophic nearshore habitats have been well documented due to the outsized influence of diatoms on coastal ecosystem functioning. In contrast, patterns of both diatom diversity and community composition in offshore oligotrophic regions where diatom biomass is low have been poorly resolved. To compare the diatom diversity and community composition in oligotrophic and eutrophic waters, diatom communities were sampled along a 1,250 km transect from the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea to the coastal waters of the northeast US shelf. Diatom community composition was determined by amplifying and sequencing the 18S rDNA V4 region. Of the 301 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) identified along the transect, the majority (70%) were sampled exclusively from oligotrophic waters of the Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea and included the genera Bacteriastrum, Haslea, Hemiaulus, Pseudo-nitzschia, and Nitzschia. Diatom ASV richness did not vary along the transect, indicating that the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea and Gulf Stream are occupied by a diverse diatom community. Although ASV richness was similar between oligotrophic and coastal waters, diatom community composition in these regions differed significantly and was correlated with temperature and phosphate, two environmental variables known to influence diatom metabolism and geographic distribution. In sum, oligotrophic waters of the western North Atlantic harbor diverse diatom assemblages that are distinct from coastal regions, and these open ocean diatoms warrant additional study, as they may play critical roles in oligotrophic ecosystems.

Dual thermal ecotypes coexist within a nearly genetically identical population of the unicellular marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus

The extent and ecological significance of intraspecific functional diversity within marine microbial populations is still poorly understood, and it remains unclear if such strain-level microdiversity will affect fitness and persistence in a rapidly changing ocean environment. In this study, we cultured 11 sympatric strains of the ubiquitous marine picocyanobacterium Synechococcus isolated from a Narragansett Bay (RI) phytoplankton community thermal selection experiment. Thermal performance curves revealed selection at cool and warm temperatures had subdivided the initial population into thermotypes with pronounced differences in maximum growth temperatures. Curiously, the genomes of all 11 isolates were almost identical (average nucleotide identities of >99.99%, with >99% of the genome aligning) and no differences in gene content or single nucleotide variants were associated with either cool or warm temperature phenotypes. Despite a very high level of genomic similarity, sequenced epigenomes for two strains showed differences in methylation on genes associated with photosynthesis. These corresponded to measured differences in photophysiology, suggesting a potential pathway for future mechanistic research into thermal microdiversity. Our study demonstrates that present-day marine microbial populations can harbor cryptic but environmentally relevant thermotypes which may increase their resilience to future rising temperatures.

Resilience of Emiliania huxleyi to future changes in subantarctic waters

Lower pH and elevated temperature alter phytoplankton growth and biomass in short-term incubations, but longer-term responses and adaptation potential are less well-studied. To determine the future of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi, a mixed genotype culture from subantarctic water was incubated for 720 days under present-day temperature and pH, and also projected future conditions by the year 2100. The future population exhibited a higher growth rate relative to present-day cells transferred to future conditions after 309 days, indicating adaptation or genotype selection; this was reflected by an increase in optimum growth temperature of ~2.5°C by the end of the experiment. Following transfer to opposing conditions in short-term cross-over incubations, cell volume responded rapidly, within eight generations, confirming trait plasticity. The changes in growth rate and cell volume were larger than reported in previous single stressor relationships and incubations, suggesting synergistic or additive effects of combined elevated temperature and lower pH and highlighting the importance of long-term multiple stressor experiments. At the end of the incubation there were no significant differences in cellular composition (particulate organic content and chlorophyll a), or primary production between present-day and future populations. Conversely, two independent methods showed a 50% decrease in both particulate inorganic carbon and calcification rate, consistent with the decrease in cell volume, in the future population. The observed plasticity and adaptive capacity of E. huxleyi indicate resilience to future conditions in subantarctic waters, although changes in cell volume and carbonate may alter grazing loss and cell ballast, so influencing carbon export to the deep ocean.

Microbiome and photoperiod interactively determine thermal sensitivity of polar and temperate diatoms

The effect of temperature on ectothermic organisms in the context of climate change has long been considered in isolation (i.e. as a single driver). This is challenged by observations demonstrating that temperature-dependent growth is correlated to further factors. However, little is known how the chronobiological history of an organism reflected in its adaptation to re-occurring cyclic patterns in its environment (e.g. annual range of photoperiods in its habitat) and biotic interactions with its microbiome, contribute to shaping its realized niche. To address this, we conducted a full-factorial microcosm multi-stressor experiment with the marine diatoms Thalassiosira gravida (polar) and Thalassiosira rotula (temperate) across multiple levels of temperature (4°C; 9°C; 13.5°C) and photoperiod (4 h; 16 h; 24 h), both in the presence or absence of their microbiomes. While temperature-dependent growth of the temperate diatom was constrained by short and long photoperiods, the polar diatom coped with a 24 h photoperiod up to its thermal optimum (9°C). The algal microbiomes particularly supported host growth at the margins of their respective fundamental niches except for the combination of the warmest temperature tested at 24 h photoperiod. Overall, this study demonstrates that temperature tolerances may have evolved interactively and that the mutualistic effect of the microbiome can only be determined once the multifactorial abiotic niche is defined.

Fall-winter sea surface temperature anomalies affect subsequent spring-summer phytoplankton succession and bioluminescence patterns in the Black Sea coastal waters near Crimea

Seasonal and interannual dynamics of bioluminescence intensity and succession of the major phytoplankton taxonomic groups were analyzed using the six-year monitoring of Crimean coastal waters (the northern Black Sea) in 2009-2014. Monitoring program included regular CTD and bioluminescence intensity casts in the upper 60 m layer by means of "Salpa-M" sonde accompanied with phytoplankton sampling from subsurface (∼0.2 m) and from the layer of maximal bioluminescence intensity. Years with anomalous warm and cold preceding fall-winter periods were defined on the basis of remotely sensed monthly sea surface temperature (SST) and long-term records on coastal SST measuring station. It was shown that succession of phytoplankton and net vertical bioluminescence patterns in subsequent spring-summer seasons depend upon the SST anomaly during preceding fall-winter period. In "cold" years a minimal bioluminescence intensity associated with a diminished biomass and species abundance of luminous dinoflagellates as well as diatoms and dinoflagellates groups as a whole were observed. A number of luminous dinoflagellate species dropped out of spring phytoplankton community (e.g., Scrippsiella cf. acuminata). As a result, a typical spring peak of bioluminescence in the upper mixed layer has not been observed during these years. In contrast maximal bioluminescence intensity and phytoplankton abundance in spring-summer was observed in "warm" years; biomass and bioluminescence intensity peaks shift to earlier month (April) in comparison to "moderate" years; period of dinoflagellate dominance was more extended during the spring-summer succession phase. Overall, group of dinoflagellates including luminous species, seems to be the most sensitive group of algae to climatic SST anomalies in coastal waters of the northern Black Sea. Hence, the bioluminescence in the upper sea layer can act as an indicator of climate-induced phytoplankton community restructuring.

Genome architecture underlying salinity adaptation in the invasive copepod Eurytemora affinis species complex: A review

With climate change, habitat salinity is shifting rapidly throughout the globe. In addition, many destructive freshwater invaders are recent immigrants from saline habitats. Recently, populations of the copepod Eurytemora affinis species complex have invaded freshwater habitats multiple times independently from saline estuaries on three continents. This review discusses features of this species complex that could enhance their evolutionary potential during rapid environmental change. Remarkably, across independent freshwater invasions, natural selection has repeatedly favored the same alleles far more than expected. This high degree of parallelism is surprising, given the expectation of nonparallel evolution for polygenic adaptation. Factors such as population structure and the genome architecture underlying critical traits under selection might help drive rapid adaptation and parallel evolution. Given the preponderance of saline-to-freshwater invasions and climate-induced salinity change, the principles found here could provide invaluable insights into mechanisms operating in other systems and the potential for adaptation in a changing planet.

Synthesizing microbial biodiversity

The diversity of microbial ecosystems is linked to crucial ecological processes and functions. Despite its significance, the ecological mechanisms responsible for the initiation and maintenance of microbiome diversity are still not fully understood. The primary challenge lies in the difficulty of isolating, monitoring, and manipulating the complex and interrelated ecological processes that modulate the diversity of microbial communities in their natural habitats. Synthetic ecology experiments provide a suitable alternative for investigating the mechanisms behind microbial biodiversity in controlled laboratory settings, as the environment can be systematically and modularly manipulated by adding and removing components. This enables the testing of hypotheses and the advancement of predictive theories. In this review, we present an overview of recent progress toward achieving this goal.

Colonial morphology weakens the response of different inorganic carbon uptake systems to CO2 levels in Microcystis population

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentration negatively impacts aquatic ecosystems and may induce evolutionary changes in the CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM) of cyanobacteria. As the most notorious freshwater cyanobacteria, Microcystis strains have high phenotypic plasticity to form colonies and blooms in lakes and reservoirs worldwide. However, phenotypic plasticity of Microcystis responses to elevated CO2 is still a major open question. Here, we studied how Microcystis strains with two genotype of inorganic carbon uptake systems, bicA and sbtA, and different colonial morphology response to 200 ppm, 400 ppm, and 800 ppm CO2 levels. The results revealed that sbtA genotypes showed significantly higher specific growth rates, Chl a concentration, and photosynthetic efficiency at 200 ppm CO2, whereas higher specific growth rates, Chl a concentration, and photosynthetic efficiency were found in bicA genotype at 800 ppm CO2. The highest values of specific growth rates, Chl a concentration, Fv/Fm, and maximal net photosynthesis (Pm) were observed in unicellular morphology, followed by small colony and large colonial morphology at all CO2 levels. The values of K0.5 (DIC), K0.5 (CO2), and K0.5 (HCO3-) in the large colonials increased with rising CO2 levels, but these values significantly decreased in the unicellular and small colonials. ANOSIM analysis indicated that colonial morphology reduced significantly inter-group differences between bicA and sbtA genotypes at all CO2 treatments. These results suggest that colonial morphology of Microcystis can weakens the response of different inorganic carbon uptake systems to CO2 levels. Moreover, phenotypic and genotypic plasticity is likely to broaden strongly the fitness of Microcystis from rising atmospheric CO2.

Response of phytoplankton community structure to environmental changes in the coastal areas of northern China

In this study, we analyzed high-frequency data pertaining to phytoplankton and environmental factors in Jiaozhou Bay from December 10, 2004, to December 10, 2005 and from July 26, 2020, to August 1, 2021. Compared with 2004-2005, the abundance of phytoplankton during 2020-2021 presented a "two-peak pattern" of annual variation, and the number of species decreased significantly. The ecological types were dominated by eurythermal species, while cold-water species declined. The overall abundance showed a downward trend, and the peak period moved to a time with lower water temperature. This could be attributed to the increase in sea surface temperature. The increase in water temperature and intensification of eutrophication made the emergence of dominant species more inclined to be single; the diversity and stability of the community structure decreased. Generalized additive model (GAM) and network analysis showed that temperature was the main driving factor influencing the phytoplankton community structure, especially during the peak period. In addition, nitrogen and phosphorus were important factors influencing species composition and competitive advantage of phytoplankton.

Mean species responses predict effects of environmental change on coexistence

Environmental change research is plagued by the curse of dimensionality: the number of communities at risk and the number of environmental drivers are both large. This raises the pressing question if a general understanding of ecological effects is achievable. Here, we show evidence that this is indeed possible. Using theoretical and simulation-based evidence for bi- and tritrophic communities, we show that environmental change effects on coexistence are proportional to mean species responses and depend on how trophic levels on average interact prior to environmental change. We then benchmark our findings using relevant cases of environmental change, showing that means of temperature optima and of species sensitivities to pollution predict concomitant effects on coexistence. Finally, we demonstrate how to apply our theory to the analysis of field data, finding support for effects of land use change on coexistence in natural invertebrate communities.

Comparative experimental evolution reveals species-specific idiosyncrasies in marine phytoplankton adaptation to warming

A number of experimental studies have demonstrated that phytoplankton can display rapid thermal adaptation in response to warmed environments. While these studies provide insight into the evolutionary responses of single species, they tend to employ different experimental techniques. Consequently, our ability to compare the potential for thermal adaptation across different, ecologically relevant, species remains limited. Here, we address this limitation by conducting simultaneous long-term warming experiments with the same experimental design on clonal isolates of three phylogenetically diverse species of marine phytoplankton; the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp., the prasinophyte Ostreococcus tauri and the diatom Phaeodoactylum tricornutum. Over the same experimental time period, we observed differing levels of thermal adaptation in response to stressful supra-optimal temperatures. Synechococcus sp. displayed the greatest improvement in fitness (i.e., growth rate) and thermal tolerance (i.e., temperature limits of growth). Ostreococcus tauri was able to improve fitness and thermal tolerance, but to a lesser extent. Finally, Phaeodoactylum tricornutum showed no signs of adaptation. These findings could help us understand how the structure of phytoplankton communities may change in response to warming, and possible biogeochemical implications, as some species show relatively more rapid adaptive shifts in their thermal tolerance.

Phytoplankton life strategies, phenological shifts and climate change in the North Atlantic Ocean from 1850 to 2100

Significant phenological shifts induced by climate change are projected within the phytoplankton community. However, projections from current Earth System Models (ESMs) understandably rely on simplified community responses that do not consider evolutionary strategies manifested as various phenotypes and trait groups. Here, we use a species-based modelling approach, combined with large-scale plankton observations, to investigate past, contemporary and future phenological shifts in diatoms (grouped by their morphological traits) and dinoflagellates in three key areas of the North Atlantic Ocean (North Sea, North-East Atlantic and Labrador Sea) from 1850 to 2100. Our study reveals that the three phytoplanktonic groups exhibit coherent and different shifts in phenology and abundance throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. The seasonal duration of large flattened (i.e. oblate) diatoms is predicted to shrink and their abundance to decline, whereas the phenology of slow-sinking elongated (i.e. prolate) diatoms and of dinoflagellates is expected to expand and their abundance to rise, which may alter carbon export in this important sink region. The increase in prolates and dinoflagellates, two groups currently not considered in ESMs, may alleviate the negative influence of global climate change on oblates, which are responsible of massive peaks of biomass and carbon export in spring. We suggest that including prolates and dinoflagellates in models may improve our understanding of the influence of global climate change on the biological carbon cycle in the oceans.

The cellular response to ocean warming in Emiliania huxleyi

Marine phytoplankton contribute substantially to the global flux of carbon from the atmosphere to the deep ocean. Sea surface temperatures will inevitably increase in line with global climate change, altering the performance of marine phytoplankton. Differing sensitivities of photosynthesis and respiration to temperature, will likely shift the strength of the future oceanic carbon sink. To further clarify the molecular mechanisms driving these alterations in phytoplankton function, shotgun proteomic analysis was carried out on the globally-occurring coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi exposed to moderate- (23°C) and elevated- (28°C) warming. Compared to the control (17°C), growth of E. huxleyi increased under elevated temperatures, with higher rates recorded under moderate- relative to elevated- warming. Proteomic analysis revealed a significant modification of the E. huxleyi cellular proteome as temperatures increased: at lower temperature, ribosomal proteins and photosynthetic machinery appeared abundant, as rates of protein translation and photosynthetic performance are restricted by low temperatures. As temperatures increased, evidence of heat stress was observed in the photosystem, characterized by a relative down-regulation of the Photosystem II oxygen evolving complex and ATP synthase. Acclimation to elevated warming (28°C) revealed a substantial alteration to carbon metabolism. Here, E. huxleyi made use of the glyoxylate cycle and succinate metabolism to optimize carbon use, maintain growth and maximize ATP production in heat-damaged mitochondria, enabling cultures to maintain growth at levels significantly higher than those recorded in the control (17°C). Based on the metabolic changes observed, we can predict that warming may benefit photosynthetic carbon fixation by E. huxleyi in the sub-optimal to optimal thermal range. Past the thermal optima, increasing rates of respiration and costs of repair will likely constrain growth, causing a possible decline in the contribution of this species to the oceanic carbon sink depending on the evolvability of these temperature thresholds.

Warmer temperatures favor slower-growing bacteria in natural marine communities

Earth's life-sustaining oceans harbor diverse bacterial communities that display varying composition across time and space. While particular patterns of variation have been linked to a range of factors, unifying rules are lacking, preventing the prediction of future changes. Here, analyzing the distribution of fast- and slow-growing bacteria in ocean datasets spanning seasons, latitude, and depth, we show that higher seawater temperatures universally favor slower-growing taxa, in agreement with theoretical predictions of how temperature-dependent growth rates differentially modulate the impact of mortality on species abundances. Changes in bacterial community structure promoted by temperature are independent of variations in nutrients along spatial and temporal gradients. Our results help explain why slow growers dominate at the ocean surface, during summer, and near the tropics and provide a framework to understand how bacterial communities will change in a warmer world.

Life-history responses to temperature and seasonality mediate ectotherm consumer-resource dynamics under climate warming

Climate warming is altering life cycles of ectotherms by advancing phenology and decreasing generation times. Theoretical models provide powerful tools to investigate these effects of climate warming on consumer-resource population dynamics. Yet, existing theory primarily considers organisms with simplified life histories in constant temperature environments, making it difficult to predict how warming will affect organisms with complex life cycles in seasonal environments. We develop a size-structured consumer-resource model with seasonal temperature dependence, parameterized for a freshwater insect consuming zooplankton. We simulate how climate warming in a seasonal environment could alter a key life-history trait of the consumer, number of generations per year, mediating responses of consumer-resource population sizes and consumer persistence. We find that, with warming, consumer population sizes increase through multiple mechanisms. First, warming decreases generation times by increasing rates of resource ingestion and growth and/or lengthening the growing season. Second, these life-history changes shorten the juvenile stage, increasing the number of emerging adults and population-level reproduction. Unstructured models with similar assumptions found that warming destabilized consumer-resource dynamics. By contrast, our size-structured model predicts stability and consumer persistence. Our study suggests that, in seasonal environments experiencing climate warming, life-history changes that lead to shorter generation times could delay population extinctions.
