Preparation of calcium phosphate ion clusters through atomization method for biomimetic mineralization of enamel

Dental enamel is a mineralized extracellular matrix, and enamel defect is a common oral disease. However, the self-repair capacity of enamel is limited due to the absence of cellular components and organic matter. Efficacy of biomimetic enamel mineralization using calcium phosphate ion clusters (CPICs), is an effective method to compensate for the limited self-healing ability of fully developed enamel. Preparing and stabilizing CPICs presents a significant challenge, as the addition of certain stabilizers can diminish the mechanical properties or biosafety of mineralized enamel. To efficiently and safely repair enamel damage, this study quickly prepared CPICs without stabilizers using the atomization method. The formed CPICs were evenly distributed on the enamel surface, prompting directional growth and transformation of hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals. The study revealed that the mended enamel displayed comparable morphology, chemical composition, hardness, and mechanical properties to those of the original enamel. The approach of repairing dental enamel by utilizing ultrasonic nebulization of CPICs is highly efficient and safe, therefore indicating great promise.

Mechanical and in vitro study of 3D printed silk fibroin and bone-based composites biomaterials for bone implant application

When treating orthopaedic damage or illness and accidental fracture, bone grafting remains the gold standard of treatment. In cases where this approach doesn't seem achievable, bone tissue engineering can offer scaffolding as a substitute. Defective and fractured bone tissue is extracted and substituted with porous scaffold structures to aid in the process of tissue regeneration. 3D bioprinting has demonstrated enormous promise in recent years for producing scaffold structures with the necessary capabilities. In order to create composite biomaterial inks for 3D bioprinting, three different materials were combined such as silk fibroin, bone particles, and synthetic biopolymer poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL). These biomaterials were used to fabricate the two composites scaffolds such as: silk fibroin + bovine bone (SFB) and silk fibroin + bovine bone + Polycaprolactone (SFBP). The biomechanical, structural, and biological elements of the manufactured composite scaffolds were characterized in order to determine their suitability as a possible biomaterial for the production of bone tissue. The in vitro bioactivity of the two composite scaffolds was assessed in the simulated body fluids, and the swelling and degradation characteristics of the two developed scaffolds were analyzed separately over time. The results showed that the mechanical durability of the composite scaffolds was enhanced by the bovine bone particles, up to a specific concentration in the silk fibroin matrix. Furthermore, the incorporation of bone particles improved the bioactive composite scaffolds' capacity to generate hydroxyapatite in vitro. The combined findings show that the two 3D printed bio-composites scaffolds have the required mechanical strength and may be applied to regeneration of bone tissue and restoration, since they resemble the characteristics of native bone.

Biomass-Derived Catalytically Active Carbon Materials for the Air Electrode of Zn-Air Batteries

Given the growing environmental and energy problems, developing clean, renewable electrochemical energy storage devices is of great interest. Zn-air batteries (ZABs) have broad prospects in energy storage because of their high specific capacity and environmental friendliness. The unavailability of cheap air electrode materials and effective and stable oxygen electrocatalysts to catalyze air electrodes are main barriers to large-scale implementation of ZABs. Due to the abundant biomass resources, self-doped heteroatoms, and unique pore structure, biomass-derived catalytically active carbon materials (CACs) have great potential to prepare carbon-based catalysts and porous electrodes with excellent performance for ZABs. This paper reviews the research progress of biomass-derived CACs applied to ZABs air electrodes. Specifically, the principle of ZABs and the source and preparation method of biomass-derived CACs are introduced. To prepare efficient biomass-based oxygen electrocatalysts, heteroatom doping and metal modification were introduced to improve the efficiency and stability of carbon materials. Finally, the effects of electron transfer number and H2O2 yield in ORR on the performance of ZABs were evaluated. This review aims to deepen the understanding of the advantages and challenges of biomass-derived CACs in the air electrodes of ZABs, promote more comprehensive research on biomass resources, and accelerate the commercial application of ZABs.

Mimicking nature to develop halide perovskite semiconductors from proteins and metal carbonates

Halide perovskite (HPs) nanostructures have recently gained extensive worldwide attentions because of their remarkable optoelectronic properties and fast developments. However, intrinsic instability against environmental factors-i.e., temperature, humidity, illumination, and oxygen-restricted their real-life applications. HPs are typically synthesized as colloids by employing organic solvents and ligands. Consequently, the precise control and tuning of complex 3D perovskite morphologies are challenging and have hardly been achieved by conventional fabrication methods. Here, we combine the benefits of self-assembly of biomolecules and an ion exchange reaction (IER) approach to customize HPs spatial shapes and composition. Initially, we apply a biomineralization approach, using biological templates (such as biopolymers, proteins, or protein assemblies), modulating the morphology of MCO3 (M = Ca2+, Ba2+) nano/microstructures. We then show that the morphology of the materials can be maintained throughout an IER process to form surface HPs with a wide variety of morphologies. The fabricated core-shell structures of metal carbonates and HPs introduce nano/microcomposites that can be sculpted into a wide diversity of 3D architectures suitable for various potential applications such as sensors, detectors, catalysis, etc. As a prototype, we fabricate disposable humidity sensors with an 11-95% detection range by casting the formed bio-templated nano/micro-composites on paper substrate.

Designing Complex Tapestries with Photography-Inspired Manipulation of Self-Organized Thin-Films

Thin-films patterned with complex motifs are of fundamental interest because of their advanced optical, mechanical and electronic properties, but fabrication of these materials remains challenging. Self-organization strategies, such as immersion controlled reaction-diffusion patterning, have shown great potential for production of patterned thin-films. However, the autonomous nature of such processes limits controllable pattern customizability and complexity. Here, it is demonstrated that photography inspired manipulation processes can overcome this limitation to create highly-complex tapestries of micropatterned films (MPF's). Inspired by classical photographic processes, MPF's are developed, bleached, exposed, fixed, and contoured into user-defined shapes and photographic toning reactions are used to convert the chemical composition MPF's, while preserving the original stripe patterns. By applying principles of composite photography, highly complex tapestries composed of multiple MPF layers are designed, where each layer can be individually manipulated into a specific shape and composition. By overcoming fundamental limitations, this synergistic approach broadens the design possibilities of reaction-diffusion processes, furthering the potential of self-organization strategies for the development of complex materials.

Formation of Olive-like TiO2 Nanospheres in a Polymeric Mesh by Sol-Gel Method

Olive-like TiO2 (titanium dioxide), nanospheres compounds were synthesized. Polysaccharide (1-3 linked β-D galactapyranose and 1.4-linked 3.6 anyhdro-α-L-galactopyranose and titanium isopropoxide (IV) was used as a precursor in its formation. The powder sample was evaluated by scanning tunneling microscope, X-ray diffraction pattern, power spectral density, fast Fourier transform, differential thermal analysis, continuous wavelet transform, and isotropy texture analysis. The results demonstrate that these nanospheres can successfully be synthesized in a solution using a polysaccharide network by means of the sol-gel method. The synthesized olive-like TiO2 nanospheres have diameters ranging from 50 nm to 500 nm. The synthesis parameters, such as temperature, time, and concentration of the polysaccharide, were controlled in solution.

Material-specific binding peptides empower sustainable innovations in plant health, biocatalysis, medicine and microplastic quantification

Material-binding peptides (MBPs) have emerged as a diverse and innovation-enabling class of peptides in applications such as plant-/human health, immobilization of catalysts, bioactive coatings, accelerated polymer degradation and analytics for micro-/nanoplastics quantification. Progress has been fuelled by recent advancements in protein engineering methodologies and advances in computational and analytical methodologies, which allow the design of, for instance, material-specific MBPs with fine-tuned binding strength for numerous demands in material science applications. A genetic or chemical conjugation of second (biological, chemical or physical property-changing) functionality to MBPs empowers the design of advanced (hybrid) materials, bioactive coatings and analytical tools. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview comprising naturally occurring MBPs and their function in nature, binding properties of short man-made MBPs (<20 amino acids) mainly obtained from phage-display libraries, and medium-sized binding peptides (20-100 amino acids) that have been reported to bind to metals, polymers or other industrially produced materials. The goal of this review is to provide an in-depth understanding of molecular interactions between materials and material-specific binding peptides, and thereby empower the use of MBPs in material science applications. Protein engineering methodologies and selected examples to tailor MBPs toward applications in agriculture with a focus on plant health, biocatalysis, medicine and environmental monitoring serve as examples of the transformative power of MBPs for various industrial applications. An emphasis will be given to MBPs' role in detecting and quantifying microplastics in high throughput, distinguishing microplastics from other environmental particles, and thereby assisting to close an analytical gap in food safety and monitoring of environmental plastic pollution. In essence, this review aims to provide an overview among researchers from diverse disciplines in respect to material-(specific) binding of MBPs, protein engineering methodologies to tailor their properties to application demands, re-engineering for material science applications using MBPs, and thereby inspire researchers to employ MBPs in their research.

Mgp High-Expressing MSCs Orchestrate the Osteoimmune Microenvironment of Collagen/Nanohydroxyapatite-Mediated Bone Regeneration

Activating autologous stem cells after the implantation of biomaterials is an important process to initiate bone regeneration. Although several studies have demonstrated the mechanism of biomaterial-mediated bone regeneration, a comprehensive single-cell level transcriptomic map revealing the influence of biomaterials on regulating the temporal and spatial expression patterns of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is still lacking. Herein, the osteoimmune microenvironment is depicted around the classical collagen/nanohydroxyapatite-based bone repair materials via combining analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics. A group of functional MSCs with high expression of matrix Gla protein (Mgp) is identified, which may serve as a pioneer subpopulation involved in bone repair. Remarkably, these Mgp high-expressing MSCs (MgphiMSCs) exhibit efficient osteogenic differentiation potential and orchestrate the osteoimmune microenvironment around implanted biomaterials, rewiring the polarization and osteoclastic differentiation of macrophages through the Mdk/Lrp1 ligand-receptor pair. The inhibition of Mdk/Lrp1 activates the pro-inflammatory programs of macrophages and osteoclastogenesis. Meanwhile, multiple immune-cell subsets also exhibit close crosstalk between MgphiMSCs via the secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) signaling pathway. These cellular profiles and interactions characterized in this study can broaden the understanding of the functional MSC subpopulations at the early stage of biomaterial-mediated bone regeneration and provide the basis for materials-designed strategies that target osteoimmune modulation.

Photochemical Design for Diverse Controllable Patterns in Self-Wrinkling Films

Harnessing the spontaneous surface instability of pliable substances to create intricate, well-ordered, and on-demand controlled surface patterns holds great potential for advancing applications in optical, electrical, and biological processes. However, the current limitations stem from challenges in modulating multidirectional stress fields and diverse boundary environments. Herein, this work proposes a universal strategy to achieve arbitrarily controllable wrinkle patterns via the spatiotemporal photochemical boundaries. Utilizing constraints and inductive effects of the photochemical boundaries, the multiple coupling relationship is accomplished among the light fields, stress fields, and morphology of wrinkles in photosensitive polyurethane (PSPU) film. Moreover, employing sequential light-irradiation with photomask enables the attainment of a diverse array of controllable patterns, ranging from highly ordered 2D patterns to periodic or intricate designs. The fundamental mechanics of underlying buckling and the formation of surface features are comprehensively elucidated through theoretical stimulation and finite element analysis. The results reveal the evolution laws of wrinkles under photochemical boundaries and represent a new effective toolkit for fabricating intricate and captivating patterns in single-layer films.

Guidelines derived from biomineralized tissues for design and construction of high-performance biomimetic materials: from weak to strong

Living organisms in nature have undergone continuous evolution over billions of years, resulting in the formation of high-performance fracture-resistant biomineralized tissues such as bones and teeth to fulfill mechanical and biological functions, despite the fact that most inorganic biominerals that constitute biomineralized tissues are weak and brittle. During the long-period evolution process, nature has evolved a number of highly effective and smart strategies to design chemical compositions and structures of biomineralized tissues to enable superior properties and to adapt to surrounding environments. Most biomineralized tissues have hierarchically ordered structures consisting of very small building blocks on the nanometer scale (nanoparticles, nanofibers or nanoflakes) to reduce the inherent weaknesses and brittleness of corresponding inorganic biominerals, to prevent crack initiation and propagation, and to allow high defect tolerance. The bioinspired principles derived from biomineralized tissues are indispensable for designing and constructing high-performance biomimetic materials. In recent years, a large number of high-performance biomimetic materials have been prepared based on these bioinspired principles with a large volume of literature covering this topic. Therefore, a timely and comprehensive review on this hot topic is highly important and contributes to the future development of this rapidly evolving research field. This review article aims to be comprehensive, authoritative, and critical with wide general interest to the science community, summarizing recent advances in revealing the formation processes, composition, and structures of biomineralized tissues, providing in-depth insights into guidelines derived from biomineralized tissues for the design and construction of high-performance biomimetic materials, and discussing recent progress, current research trends, key problems, future main research directions and challenges, and future perspectives in this exciting and rapidly evolving research field.

Peptide-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs): what peptides can do for SAMs and vice versa

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) represent highly ordered molecular materials with versatile biochemical features and multidisciplinary applications. Research on SAMs has made much progress since the early begginings of Au substrates and alkanethiols, and numerous examples of peptide-displaying SAMs can be found in the literature. Peptides, presenting increasing structural complexity, stimuli-responsiveness, and biological relevance, represent versatile functional components in SAMs-based platforms. This review examines the major findings and progress made on the use of peptide building blocks displayed as part of SAMs with specific functions, such as selective cell adhesion, migration and differentiation, biomolecular binding, advanced biosensing, molecular electronics, antimicrobial, osteointegrative and antifouling surfaces, among others. Peptide selection and design, functionalisation strategies, as well as structural and functional characteristics from selected examples are discussed. Additionally, advanced fabrication methods for dynamic peptide spatiotemporal presentation are presented, as well as a number of characterisation techniques. All together, these features and approaches enable the preparation and use of increasingly complex peptide-based SAMs to mimic and study biological processes, and provide convergent platforms for high throughput screening discovery and validation of promising therapeutics and technologies.

From Unregulated Networks to Designed Microstructures: Introducing Heterogeneity at Different Length Scales in Photopolymers for Additive Manufacturing

Photopolymers have been optimized as protective and decorative coating materials for decades. However, with the rise of additive manufacturing technologies, vat photopolymerization has unlocked the use of photopolymers for three-dimensional objects with new material requirements. Thus, the originally highly cross-linked, amorphous architecture of photopolymers cannot match the expectations for modern materials anymore, revealing the largely unanswered question of how diverse properties can be achieved in photopolymers. Herein, we review how microstructural features in soft matter materials should be designed and implemented to obtain high performance materials. We then translate these findings into chemical design suggestions for enhanced printable photopolymers. Based on this analysis, we have found microstructural heterogenization to be the most powerful tool to tune photopolymer performance. By combining the chemical toolbox for photopolymerization and the analytical toolbox for microstructural characterization, we examine current strategies for physical heterogenization (fillers, inkjet printing) and chemical heterogenization (semicrystalline polymers, block copolymers, interpenetrating networks, photopolymerization induced phase separation) of photopolymers and put them into a material scientific context to develop a roadmap for improving and diversifying photopolymers' performance.

Bioinspired Macroporous Materials of MXene Nanosheets: Ice-Templated Assembly and Multifunctional Applications

Biological macroporous materials, such as stems of the plants and bone of the animals, possess outstanding properties for powerful guarantee of creatures' survival through the well-aligned architecture constructed from limited components. Transition metal carbides or nitrides (MXenes), as novel 2D assemblies, have attracted numerous attentions in various applications due to their unique properties. Therefore, mimicking the bioinspired architecture with MXenes will boost the development of human-made materials with unparalleled properties. Freeze casting has been widely applied to fabricate bioinspired MXene-based materials and achieve the assembly of MXene nanosheets into 3D forms. This process solves the inherent restacking problems of MXenes, simultaneously preserving the unique properties of MXenes with a physical process. Here, the ice-templated assembly of MXene in terms of the freezing processes and their potential mechanisms is summarized. In addition, applications of MXene-based materials in electromagnetic interference shielding and absorption, energy storage and conversion, as well as piezoresistive pressure sensors are also reviewed. Finally, the current challenges and bottlenecks of ice-templated assembly of MXene are further discussed to guide the development of bioinspired MXene-based materials.

Bioinspired Hierarchical Self-Assembled Nanozyme for Efficient Antibacterial Treatment

Along with the rapid development and ever-deepening understanding of nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanomaterials hold promise to mimic the highly evolved biological exquisite nanostructures and sophisticated functions. Here, inspired by the ubiquitous antibacterial nanostructures on the wing surfaces of some insects, a NiCo2 O4 nanozyme with self-adaptive hierarchical nanostructure is developed that can capture bacteria of various morphotypes via the physico-mechanical interaction between the nanostructure and bacteria. Moreover, the developed biomimetic nanostructure further exhibits superior peroxidase-like catalytic activity, which can catalytically generate highly toxic reactive oxygen species that disrupt bacterial membranes and induce bacterial apoptosis. Therefore, the mechano-catalytic coupling property of this NiCo2 O4 nanozyme allows for an extensive and efficient antibacterial application, with no concerns of antimicrobial resistance. This work suggests a promising strategy for the rational design of advanced antibacterial materials by mimicking biological antibiosis.

Manipulation of Convection Using Infrared Light Emitted from Human Hands

Control of convection plays an important role in heat transfer regulation, bio/chemical sensing, phase separation, etc. Current convection controlling systems generally depend on engineered energy sources to drive and manipulate the convection, which brings additional energy consumption into the system. Here the use of human hand as a natural and sustainable infrared (IR) radiation source for the manipulation of liquid convection is demonstrated. The fluid can sense the change of the relative position or the shape of the hand with the formation of different convection patterns. Besides the generation of static complex patterns, dynamic manipulation of convections can also be realized via moving of hand or finger. The use of such sustainable convections to control the movement of a floating "boat" is further achieved. The use of human hands as the natural energy sources provides a promising approach for the manipulation of liquid convection without the need of extra external energy, which may be further utilized for low-cost and intelligent bio/chemical sensing and separation.

Green in situ synthesis of sandwich-like W-bridged siligraphene (g-SiC@WC@g-SiC) heterostructure from Saccharum Ravennae gum for ultrahigh-rate photodegradation of acetaminophen

Herein, the sandwich-like W-bridged siligraphene (W/g-SiC) as a heterojunction of WC and siligraphene nanosheets have been first accomplished via a simple green synthesis using Saccharum Ravennae gum as a natural Si and W sources and gelatin as a natural C and N sources. In a magnesiothermic process, Si and C atoms bond together and form a graphene-like structure where half of the C atoms are replaced by Si atoms. The presence of W in the natural precursor creates a W-doped siligraphene structure. Tungsten in the form of carbide (WC) creates a heterojunction with g-SiC, which reduces the bandgap. According to the experimental and computational data, the proposed structure of W/g-SiC was predicted by replacing the W atoms with Si atoms and bonding with C atoms in the siligraphene structure. The W-C bond in this structure is elongated and the W atom comes out of the siligraphene sheet and is placed between two siligraphene layers to interact with three carbons from the next layer. Under visible light irradiation, holes are generated on the g-SiC layers and electrons in the WC interlayer, which makes it a highly efficient photocatalyst with ultrafast charge separation and active surface for the removal of Acetaminophen.

Electro-Sorting Create Heterogeneity: Constructing A Multifunctional Janus Film with Integrated Compositional and Microstructural Gradients for Guided Bone Regeneration

Biology remains the envy of flexible soft matter fabrication because it can satisfy multiple functional needs by organizing a small set of proteins and polysaccharides into hierarchical systems with controlled heterogeneity in composition and microstructure. Here, it is reported that controlled, mild electronic inputs (<10 V; <20 min) induce a homogeneous gelatin-chitosan mixture to undergo sorting and bottom-up self-assembly into a Janus film with compositional gradient (i.e., from chitosan-enriched layer to chitosan/gelatin-contained layer) and tunable dense-porous gradient microstructures (e.g., porosity, pore size, and ratio of dense to porous layers). This Janus film performs is shown multiple functions for guided bone regeneration: the integration of compositional and microstructural features confers flexible mechanics, asymmetric properties for interfacial wettability, molecular transport (directional growth factor release), and cellular responses (prevents fibroblast infiltration but promotes osteoblast growth and differentiation). Overall, this work demonstrates the versatility of electrofabrication for the customized manufacturing of functional gradient soft matter.

Polyelectrolyte-Cation Complexes Using PAsp-Sr Complexes Induce Biomimetic Mineralization with Antibacterial Ability

Remineralized dentin with an antibacterial ability is still a significant challenge in dentistry. Previously, a polyelectrolyte-calcium complexes pre-precursor (PCCP) process is proposed for rapid collagen mineralization. In the present study, the expansion concept of the PCCP process is explored by replacing the calcium with other cations, such as strontium. The results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 3D stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and high-resolution TEM with selected area electron diffraction demonstrate that biomimetic mineralization of collagen fibrils and demineralized dentin could be fulfilled with Sr&F-codoped hydroxyapatite (HAp) after they are treated with poly-aspartic acid-strontium (PAsp-Sr) suspension followed by a phosphate&fluoride solution. Moreover, dentin remineralized with Sr&F-codoped HAp exhibits in vitro and in vivo antibacterial ability against Streptococcus mutans. The cytotoxicity and oral mucosa irritation tests reveal excellent biocompatibility of mineralization mediums (PAsp-Sr suspension and phosphate&fluoride solution). The demineralized dentin's mechanical properties (elastic modulus and microhardness) could be restored almost to that of the intact dentin. Hence, the expansion concept of the PCCP process that replaces calcium ions with some cationic ions along with fluorine opens up new horizons for generating antibacterial remineralized dentin containing ions-doped HAp with excellent biocompatibility via biomimetic mineralization technology.

Electrostatic assembly of a multicomponent peptide/amphiphile nanotube

The ability to integrate the elements of a multicomponent nanostructure with nanoscale precision by co-assembly provides a versatile strategy to create novel materials with tunable properties. The search for function in these materials will require new strategies to be developed that control the assembly process, especially for structurally dissimilar components, which often have a propensity to self-sort into non-integrated nanostructures. In this work, two components, a peptide (1) and an amphiphile (2), were integratively co-assembled into a multicomponent nanotube. The interaction between the two components at the supramolecular level was driven by the electrostatic complementarity of the components, which was controlled by the pH-dependent charge of 1. Characterization of the co-assembled nanotube, 1-2NT, was achieved using a combination of TEM, AFM, CLSM and SIM techniques, which showed that both components were colocalized within the nanotube. These studies, in conjunction with CD, IR and fluorescence studies, suggested that 1 and 2 were arranged in partially reorganized, self-sorted domains, which were integrated as laminated nanoribbons that coiled together into the final co-assembled nanotube.

Interlinking spatial dimensions and kinetic processes in dissipative materials to create synthetic systems with lifelike functionality

Biological systems spontaneously convert energy input into the actions necessary to survive. Motivated by the efficacy of these processes, researchers aim to forge materials systems that exhibit the self-sustained and autonomous functionality found in nature. Success in this effort will require synthetic analogues of the following: a metabolism to generate energy, a vasculature to transport energy and materials, a nervous system to transmit 'commands', a musculoskeletal system to translate commands into physical action, regulatory networks to monitor the entire enterprise, and a mechanism to convert 'nutrients' into growing materials. Design rules must interconnect the material's structural and kinetic properties over ranges of length (that can vary from the nano- to mesoscale) and timescales to enable local energy dissipations to power global functionality. Moreover, by harnessing dynamic interactions intrinsic to the material, the system itself can perform the work needed for its own functionality. Here, we assess the advances and challenges in dissipative materials design and at the same time aim to spur developments in next-generation functional, 'living' materials.

Hierarchically Structured Nanocomposites via Mixed-Graft Block Copolymer Templating: Achieving Controlled Nanostructure and Functionality

Integrating inorganic and polymerized organic functionalities to create composite materials presents an efficient strategy for the discovery and fabrication of multifunctional materials. The characteristics of these composites go beyond a simple sum of individual component properties; they are profoundly influenced by the spatial arrangement of these components and the resulting homo-/hetero-interactions. In this work, we develop a facile and highly adaptable approach for crafting nanostructured polymer-inorganic composites, leveraging hierarchically assembling mixed-graft block copolymers (mGBCPs) as templates. These mGBCPs, composed of diverse polymeric side chains that are covalently tethered with a defined sequence to a linear backbone polymer, self-assemble into ordered hierarchical structures with independently tuned nano- and mesoscale lattice features. Through the coassembly of mGBCPs with diversely sized inorganic fillers such as metal ions (ca. 0.1 nm), metal oxide clusters (0.5-2 nm), and metallic nanoparticles (>2 nm), we create three-dimensional filler arrays with controlled interfiller separation and arrangement. Multiple types of inorganic fillers are simultaneously integrated into the mGBCP matrix by introducing orthogonal interactions between distinct fillers and mGBCP side chains. This results in nanocomposites where each type of filler is selectively segregated into specific nanodomains with matrix-defined orientations. The developed coassembly strategy offers a versatile and scalable pathway for hierarchically structured nanocomposites, unlocking new possibilities for advanced materials in the fields of optoelectronics, sensing, and catalysis.

Poly(Ionic Liquid) Double-Network Elastomers with High-Impact Resistance Enhanced by Cation-π Interactions

With the continuous development of impact protection materials, lightweight, high-impact resistance, flexibility, and controllable toughness are required. Here, tough and impact-resistant poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)/poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) double-network (DN) elastomers are constructed via multiple cross-linking of polymer networks and cation-π interactions of PIL chains. Benefiting from the strong noncovalent cohesion achieved by the cation-π interactions in PIL chains, the prepared PIL DN elastomers exhibit extraordinary compressive strength (95.24 ± 2.49 MPa) and toughness (55.98 ± 0.66 MJ m-3 ) under high-velocity impact load (5000 s-1 ). The synthesized PIL DN elastomer combines strength and flexibility to protect fragile items from impact. This strategy provides a new research idea in the field of the next generation of safety and protective materials.

Emergent Self-Assembly of Sustainable Plastics Based on Amino Acid Nanocrystals

Development of biodegradable plastic materials is of primary importance in view of acute environmental and health problems associated with the accumulation of plastic waste. We fabricated a biodegradable composite material based on hydroxyethyl cellulose polymer and tyrosine nanocrystals, which demonstrates enhanced strength and ductility (typically mutually excluding properties), superior to most biodegradable plastics. This emergent behavior results from an assembly pattern that leads to a uniform nanoscale morphology and strong interactions between the components. Water-resistant biodegradable composites encapsulated with hydrophobic polycaprolactone as a protection layer were also fabricated. Self-assembly of robust sustainable plastics with emergent properties by using readily available building blocks provides a valuable toolbox for creating sustainable materials.

Mechanical properties of TiO2/carboxylic-acid interfaces from first-principles calculations

Nature forms structurally complex materials with a large variation of mechanical and physical properties from only very few organic compounds and minerals. Nanocomposites made from TiO2 and carboxylic-acids, two substances that are available to nature as well as materials engineers, can be seen as representative of a huge class of natural and bio-inspired materials. The hybrid interfaces between the two components are thought to determine the overall properties of the composite. Yet, little is known about the atomistic processes at those interfaces under load and their failure mechanisms. The present work models the stress-strain curves of TiO2/carboxylic-acid interfaces in the slow deformation limit for different facets and binding modes, employing density functional theory calculations. Contrary to former hypotheses, the interface rarely fails through a de-bonding of the molecule, but rather through a surface failure mechanism. Furthermore, a stress-release mechanism is discovered for the bi-dentate binding mode on the {101} facet. Deriving mechanical properties, such as the interface strength, strain at interface failure, and the elastic modulus, allows a comparison with experimental results. The calculated strengths and elastic moduli already agree qualitatively with properties of nanocomposites, despite the simplifications in the model consisting of periodic sandwich structures. The results presented here will help to improve these materials and can be directly integrated in multi-scale simulations, in order to reach a more accurate quantitative description.

Untapped Potential of Deep Eutectic Solvents for the Synthesis of Bioinspired Inorganic-Organic Materials

Since the discovery of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in 2003, significant progress has been made in the field, specifically advancing aspects of their preparation and physicochemical characterization. Their low-cost and unique tailored properties are reasons for their growing importance as a sustainable medium for the resource-efficient processing and synthesis of advanced materials. In this paper, the significance of these designer solvents and their beneficial features, in particular with respect to biomimetic materials chemistry, is discussed. Finally, this article explores the unrealized potential and advantageous aspects of DESs, focusing on the development of biomineralization-inspired hybrid materials. It is anticipated that this article can stimulate new concepts and advances providing a reference for breaking down the multidisciplinary borders in the field of bioinspired materials chemistry, especially at the nexus of computation and experiment, and to develop a rigorous materials-by-design paradigm.

Anisotropic wood-hydrogel composites: Extending mechanical properties of wood towards soft materials' applications

Delignified wood (DW) offers a versatile platform for the manufacturing of composites, with material properties ranging from stiff to soft and flexible by preserving the preferential fiber directionality of natural wood through a structure-retaining production process. This study presents a facile method for fabricating anisotropic and mechanically tunable DW-hydrogel composites. These composites were produced by infiltrating delignified spruce wood with an aqueous gelatin solution followed by chemical crosslinking. The mechanical properties could be modulated across a broad strength and stiffness range (1.2-18.3 MPa and 170-1455 MPa, respectively) by varying the crosslinking time. The diffusion-led crosslinking further allowed to manufacture mechanically graded structures. The resulting uniaxial, tubular structure of the anisotropic DW-hydrogel composite enabled the alignment of murine fibroblasts in vitro, which could be utilized in future studies on potential applications in tissue engineering.

Nanoscale dynamic mechanical analysis on interfaces of biological composites

Biological composites incorporate structural arrays of rigid-elastic reinforcements made of minerals or crystalline biopolymers, which are connected by thin, compliant, and viscoelastic macromolecular matrix material. The near-interface regions of these biological composites grant them energy dissipation capabilities against dynamic mechanical loadings, which promote various biomechanical functions such as impact adsorption, fracture toughness, and mechanical signal filtering. Here, we employ theoretical modeling and finite-element simulations to analyze the mechanical response of the near-interface in biological composites to nanoscale dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). We identified the dominating load-bearing mechanisms of the near-interface region and employed these insights to introduce simple semi-empirical formulations for approaching the mechanical properties (storage and loss moduli) of the biological composite from the nanoscale DMA results. Our analysis paves the way for the nanomechanical characterization of biological composites in diverse natural materials systems, which can also be employed for bioinspired and biomedical configurations.

Biomimetic Silk Architectures Outperform Animal Horns in Strength and Toughness

Structural biomimicry is an intelligent approach for developing lightweight, strong, and tough materials (LSTMs). Current fabrication technologies, such as 3D printing and two-photon lithography often face challenges in constructing complex interlaced structures, such as the sinusoidal crossed herringbone structure that contributes to the ultrahigh strength and fracture toughness of the dactyl club of peacock mantis shrimps. Herein, bioinspired LSTMs with laminated or herringbone structures is reported, by combining textile processing and silk fiber "welding" techniques. The resulting biomimetic silk LSTMs (BS-LSTMs) exhibit a remarkable combination of lightweight with a density of 0.6-0.9 g cm-3 , while also being 1.5 times stronger and 16 times more durable than animal horns. These findings demonstrate that BS-LSTMs are among the toughest natural materials made from silk proteins. Finite element simulations further reveal that the fortification and hardening of BS-LSTMs arise primarily from the hierarchical organization of silk fibers and mechanically transferable meso-interfaces. This study highlights the rational, cost-effective, controllable mesostructure, and transferable strategy of integrating textile processing and fiber "welding" techniques for the fabrication of BS-LSTMs with advantageous structural and mechanical properties. These findings have significant implications for a wide range of applications in biomedicine, mechanical engineering, intelligent textiles, aerospace industries, and beyond.

Biomimetic Mineralization: From Microscopic to Macroscopic Materials and Their Biomedical Applications

Biomineralization is an attractive pathway to produce mineral-based biomaterials with high performance and hierarchical structures. To date, the biomineralization process and mechanism have been extensively studied, especially for the formation of bone, teeth, and nacre. Inspired by those, abundant biomimetic mineralized materials have been fabricated for biomedical applications. Those bioinspired materials generally exhibit great mechanical properties and biological functions. Nevertheless, substantial gaps remain between biomimetic materials and natural materials, particularly with respect to mechanical properties and mutiscale structures. This Review summarizes the recent progress of micro- and macroscopic biomimetic mineralization from the perspective of materials synthesis and biomedical applications. To begin with, we discuss the progress of biomimetic mineralization at the microscopic level. The mechanical strength, stability, and functionality of the nano- and micromaterials are significantly improved by introducing biominerals, such as DNA nanostructures, nanovaccines, and living cells. Next, numerous biomimetic strategies based on biomineralization at the macroscopic scale are highlighted, including in situ mineralization and bottom-up assembly of mineralized building blocks. Finally, challenges and future perspectives regarding the development of biomimetic mineralization are also presented with the aim of offering insights for the rational design and fabrication of next-generation biomimetic mineralized materials.

Calcitic Prisms of The Giant Seashell Pinna Nobilis Form Light Guide Arrays

The shells of the Pinnidae family are based on a double layer of single-crystal-like calcitic prisms and inner aragonitic nacre, a structure known for its outstanding mechanical performance. However, on the posterior side, shells are missing the nacreous layer, which raises the question of whether there can be any functional role in giving up this mechanical performance. Here, it is demonstrated that the prismatic part of the Pinna nobilis shell exhibits unusual optical properties, whereby each prism acts as an individual optical fiber guiding the ambient light to the inner shell cavity by total internal reflection. This pixelated light channeling enhances both spatial resolution and contrast while reducing angular blurring, an apt combination for acute tracking of a moving object. These findings offer insights into the evolutionary aspects of light-sensing and imaging and demonstrate how an architectured optical system for efficient light-tracking can be based on birefringent ceramics.

Patterning Complex Line Motifs in Thin Films Using Immersion-Controlled Reaction-Diffusion

The discovery of self-organization principles that enable scalable routes toward complex functional materials has proven to be a persistent challenge. Here, reaction-diffusion driven, immersion-controlled patterning (R-DIP) is introduced, a self-organization strategy using immersion-controlled reaction-diffusion for targeted line patterning in thin films. By modulating immersion speeds, the movement of a reaction-diffusion front over gel films is controlled, which induces precipitation of highly uniform lines at the reaction front. A balance between the immersion speed and diffusion provides both hands-on tunability of the line spacing (d = 10 - 300 μ m $d = 10-300 \; \umu \text{m}$ ) as well as error-correction against defects. This immersion-driven patterning strategy is widely applicable, which is demonstrated by producing line patterns of silver/silver oxide nanoparticles, silver chromate, silver dichromate, and lead carbonate. Through combinatorial stacking of different line patterns, hybrid materials with multi-dimensional patterns such as square-, diamond-, rectangle-, and triangle-shaped motifs are fabricated. The functionality potential and scalability is demonstrated by producing both wafer-scale diffraction gratings with user-defined features as well as an opto-mechanical sensor based on Moiré patterning.

Revisiting Nature's "Unifying Patterns": A Biological Appraisal

Effective bioinspiration requires dialogue between designers and biologists, and this dialogue must be rooted in a shared scientific understanding of living systems. To support learning from "nature's overarching design lessons" the Biomimicry Institute has produced ten "Unifying Patterns of Nature". These patterns have been developed to engage with those interested in finding biologically inspired solutions to human challenges. Yet, although well-intentioned and appealing, they are likely to dishearten biologists. The aim of this paper is to identify why and propose alternative principles based on evolutionary theory.

Bamboo-Inspired Structurally Efficient Materials with a Large Continuous Gradient

Because of its light weight and high strength, bamboo is used in many applications around the world. Natural bamboo is built from fiber-reinforced material and exhibits a porous graded architecture that provides its remarkable mechanical performance. This porosity gradient is generated through the unique distribution of densified vascular bundles. Scientists and engineers have been trying to mimic this architecture for a very long time with much of the work focusing on the effect of fiber reinforcement. However, there still lacks quantitative studies on the role of pore gradient design on mechanical properties, in part because the fabrication of bamboo-inspired graded materials is challenging. Here, the steep and continuous porosity gradient through an ingenious cellular design in Moso bamboo is revealed. The effect of gradient design on the mechanical performance is systematically studied by using 3D-printed models. The results show that not only the magnitude of gradient but also its continuity have a significant effect. By introducing a continuous and large gradient, the maximum flexural load and energy absorption capability can be increased by 40% and 110% when comparing to the structure without gradient. These bamboo-inspired cellular architectures can offer efficient solutions for the design of damage tolerant engineering structures.

Direct Ink Writing of Pickering Emulsions Generates Ultralight Conducting Polymer Foams with Hierarchical Structure and Multifunctionality

Porous materials with multiple hierarchy levels can be useful as lightweight engineering structures, biomedical implants, flexible functional devices, and thermal insulators. Numerous routes have integrated bottom-up and top-down approaches for the generation of engineering materials with lightweight nature, complex structures, and excellent mechanical properties. It nonetheless remains challenging to generate ultralight porous materials with hierarchical architectures and multi-functionality. Here, the combined strategy based on Pickering emulsions and additive manufacturing leads to the development of ultralight conducting polymer foams with hierarchical pores and multifunctional performance. Direct writing of the emulsified inks consisting of the nano-oxidant-hydrated vanadium pentoxide nanowires-generated free-standing scaffolds, which are stabilized by the interfacial organization of the nanowires into network structures. The following in situ oxidative polymerization transforms the nano-oxidant scaffolds into foams consisting of a typical conducting polymer-polyaniline. The lightweight polyaniline foams featured by hierarchical pores and high surface areas show excellent performances in the applications of supercapacitor electrodes, planar micro-supercapacitors, and gas sensors. This emerging technology demonstrates the great potential of a combination of additive manufacturing with complex fluids for the generation of functional solids with lightweight nature and adjustable structure-function relationships.

Mechanical and Crack Propagating Behavior of Sierpiński Carpet Composites

Fractals, mathematically defined as "self-similar subsets at different scales", are ubiquitous in nature despite their complexity in assembly and formulation. Fractal geometry formed by simple components has long been applied to many fields, from physics and chemistry to electronics and architecture. The Sierpiński carpet (SC), a fractal with a Hausdorff dimension of approximately 1.8933, has two-dimensional space-filling abilities and therefore provides many structural applications. However, few studies have investigated its mechanical properties and fracture behaviors. Here, utilizing the lattice spring model (LSM), we constructed SC composites with two base materials and simulated tensile tests to show how fractal iterations affect their mechanical properties and crack propagation. From observing the stress-strain responses, we find that, for either the soft-base or stiff-base SC composites, the second iteration has the optimal mechanical performance in the terms of stiffness, strength, and toughness compared to the composites with higher hierarchies. The reason behind this surprising result is that the largest stress intensities occur at the corners of the smallest squares in the middle zone, which consequently induces crack nucleation. We also find that the main crack tends to deflect locally in SC composites with a soft matrix, but in global main crack behavior, SC composites with a stiff matrix have a large equivalent crack deflection. Furthermore, considering the inherent anisotropy of SC composites, we rotated the samples by 45°. The results show that the tensile strength and toughness of rotated SC composites are inferior and the crack propagating behaviors are distinct from the standard SC composites. This finding infers advanced engineering for crack control and deflection by adjusting the orientation of SC composites. Overall, our study opens the door for future engineering applications in stretchable devices, seismic metamaterials, and structural materials with tunable properties and hierarchies.

Multifunctionality in Nature: Structure-Function Relationships in Biological Materials

Modern material design aims to achieve multifunctionality through integrating structures in a diverse range, resulting in simple materials with embedded functions. Biological materials and organisms are typical examples of this concept, where complex functionalities are achieved through a limited material base. This review highlights the multiscale structural and functional integration of representative natural organisms and materials, as well as biomimetic examples. The impact, wear, and crush resistance properties exhibited by mantis shrimp and ironclad beetle during predation or resistance offer valuable inspiration for the development of structural materials in the aerospace field. Investigating cyanobacteria that thrive in extreme environments can contribute to developing living materials that can serve in places like Mars. The exploration of shape memory and the self-repairing properties of spider silk and mussels, as well as the investigation of sensing-actuating and sensing-camouflage mechanisms in Banksias, chameleons, and moths, holds significant potential for the optimization of soft robot designs. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of mussel and gecko adhesion mechanisms can have a profound impact on medical fields, including tissue engineering and drug delivery. In conclusion, the integration of structure and function is crucial for driving innovations and breakthroughs in modern engineering materials and their applications. The gaps between current biomimetic designs and natural organisms are also discussed.

Hygrothermic Wood Actuated Robotic Hand

Stimulus-responsive actuators play a vital role in the new generation of intelligent systems. However, poor mechanical performance, complicated fabrication processes, and the inability to complex deformation limit their practical applications. Herein, these challenges are overcome via designing a strong hygrothermic wood actuator with asymmetric water affinity. The actuator is readily constructed by sandwiching polypyrrole-coated wood with a Ni complex hygroscopic gel top layer for moisture absorption and a polyimide bottom layer as the water barrier. The resulting hygrothermic wood spontaneously stretches and bends itself in response to moisture and thermal/light stimulation. A robotic hand and a series of grippers made of hygrothermic wood demonstrate dexterous object-hand interactions during grasping and holding, while the reversible hygrothermic property allows the actuator to be potentially applied in fire rescue scenarios to rescue trapped objects. A combination of good mechanical properties, multi-stimulus-response, complex deformation, wide working temperature range, low manufacturing cost, and biocompatibility are simultaneously realized by one device. It is thus believed that such a strong wood actuator will open up a new avenue for building intelligent robotic hand systems.

Wafer-Scale Fabrication of Hierarchically Porous Silicon and Silica by Active Nanoparticle-Assisted Chemical Etching and Pseudomorphic Thermal Oxidation

Many biological materials exhibit a multiscale porosity with small, mostly nanoscale pores as well as large, macroscopic capillaries to simultaneously achieve optimized mass transport capabilities and lightweight structures with large inner surfaces. Realizing such a hierarchical porosity in artificial materials necessitates often sophisticated and expensive top-down processing that limits scalability. Here, an approach that combines self-organized porosity based on metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) with photolithographically induced macroporosity for the synthesis of single-crystalline silicon with a bimodal pore-size distribution is presented, i.e., hexagonally arranged cylindrical macropores with 1 µm diameter separated by walls that are traversed by pores 60 nm across. The MACE process is mainly guided by a metal-catalyzed reduction-oxidation reaction, where silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) serve as the catalyst. In this process, the AgNPs act as self-propelled particles that are constantly removing silicon along their trajectories. High-resolution X-ray imaging and electron tomography reveal a resulting large open porosity and inner surface for potential applications in high-performance energy storage, harvesting and conversion or for on-chip sensorics and actuorics. Finally, the hierarchically porous silicon membranes can be transformed structure-conserving by thermal oxidation into hierarchically porous amorphous silica, a material that could be of particular interest for opto-fluidic and (bio-)photonic applications due to its multiscale artificial vascularization.

Biological and Bioinspired Thermal Energy Regulation and Utilization

The regulation and utilization of thermal energy is increasingly important in modern society due to the growing demand for heating and cooling in applications ranging from buildings, to cooling high power electronics, and from personal thermal management to the pursuit of renewable thermal energy technologies. Over billions of years of natural selection, biological organisms have evolved unique mechanisms and delicate structures for efficient and intelligent regulation and utilization of thermal energy. These structures also provide inspiration for developing advanced thermal engineering materials and systems with extraordinary performance. In this review, we summarize research progress in biological and bioinspired thermal energy materials and technologies, including thermal regulation through insulation, radiative cooling, evaporative cooling and camouflage, and conversion and utilization of thermal energy from solar thermal radiation and biological bodies for vapor/electricity generation, temperature/infrared sensing, and communication. Emphasis is placed on introducing bioinspired principles, identifying key bioinspired structures, revealing structure-property-function relationships, and discussing promising and implementable bioinspired strategies. We also present perspectives on current challenges and outlook for future research directions. We anticipate that this review will stimulate further in-depth research in biological and bioinspired thermal energy materials and technologies, and help accelerate the growth of this emerging field.

Biomimetic Gradient Bouligand Structure Enhances Impact Resistance of Ceramic-Polymer Composites

Biological materials relied on multiple synergistic structural design elements typically exhibit excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. Hierarchical incorporation of different biostructural elements into a single artificial material is a promising approach to enhance mechanical properties, but remains challenging. Herein, a biomimetic structural design strategy is proposed by coupling gradient structure with twisted plywood Bouligand structure, attempting to improve the impact resistance of ceramic-polymer composites. Via robocasting and sintering, kaolin ceramic filaments reinforced by coaxially aligned alumina nanoplatelets are arranged into Bouligand structure with a gradual transition in filament spacing along the thickness direction. After the following polymer infiltration, biomimetic ceramic-polymer composites with a gradient Bouligand (GB) structure are eventually fabricated. Experimental investigations reveal that the incorporation of gradient structure into Bouligand structure improves both the peak force and total energy absorption of the obtained ceramic-polymer composites. Computational modeling further suggests the substantial improvement in impact resistance by adopting GB structure, and clarifies the underlying deformation behavior of the biomimetic GB structured composites under impact. This biomimetic design strategy may provide valuable insights for developing lightweight and impact-resistant structural materials in the future.

Soft Functionally Gradient Materials and Structures - Natural and Manmade: A Review

Functionally gradient materials (FGM) have gradual variations in their properties along one or more dimensions due to local compositional or structural distinctions by design. Traditionally, hard materials (e.g., metals, ceramics) are used to design and fabricate FGMs; however, there is increasing interest in polymer-based soft and compliant FGMs mainly because of their potential application in the human environment. Soft FGMs are ideally suitable to manage interfacial problems in dissimilar materials used in many emerging devices and systems for human interaction, such as soft robotics and electronic textiles and beyond. Soft systems are ubiquitous in everyday lives; they are resilient and can easily deform, absorb energy, and adapt to changing environments. Here, the basic design and functional principles of biological FGMs and their manmade counterparts are discussed using representative examples. The remarkable multifunctional properties of natural FGMs resulting from their sophisticated hierarchical structures, built from a relatively limited choice of materials, offer a rich source of new design paradigms and manufacturing strategies for manmade materials and systems for emerging technological needs. Finally, the challenges and potential pathways are highlighted to leverage soft materials' facile processability and unique properties toward functional FGMs.

Using Wool Keratin as a Structural Biomaterial and Natural Mediator to Fabricate Biocompatible and Robust Bioelectronic Platforms

The design and fabrication of biopolymer-incorporated flexible electronics have attracted immense interest in healthcare systems, degradable implants, and electronic skin. However, the application of these soft bioelectronic devices is often hampered by their intrinsic drawbacks, such as poor stability, inferior scalability, and unsatisfactory durability. Herein, for the first time, using wool keratin (WK) as a structural biomaterial and natural mediator to fabricate soft bioelectronics is presented. Both theoretical and experimental studies reveal that the unique features of WK can endow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with excellent water dispersibility, stability, and biocompatibility. Therefore, well-dispersed and electroconductive bio-inks can be prepared via a straightforward mixing process of WK and CNTs. The as-obtained WK/CNTs inks can be directly exploited to design versatile and high-performance bioelectronics, such as flexible circuits and electrocardiogram electrodes. More impressively, WK can also be a natural mediator to connect CNTs and polyacrylamide chains to fabricate a strain sensor with enhanced mechanical and electrical properties. With conformable and soft architectures, these WK-derived sensing units can be further assembled into an integrated glove for real-time gesture recognition and dexterous robot manipulations, suggesting the great potential of the WK/CNT composites for wearable artificial intelligence.

Architected Metal Selenides via Sequential Cation and Anion Exchange on Self-Organizing Nanocomposites

Shape-preserving conversion reactions have the potential to unlock new routes for self-organization of complex three-dimensional (3D) nanomaterials with advanced functionalities. Specifically, developing such conversion routes toward shape-controlled metal selenides is of interest due to their photocatalytic properties and because these metal selenides can undergo further conversion reactions toward a wide range of other functional chemical compositions. Here, we present a strategy toward metal selenides with controllable 3D architectures using a two-step self-organization/conversion approach. First, we steer the coprecipitation of barium carbonate nanocrystals and silica into nanocomposites with controllable 3D shapes. Second, using a sequential exchange of cations and anions, we completely convert the chemical composition of the nanocrystals into cadmium selenide (CdSe) while preserving the initial shape of the nanocomposites. These architected CdSe structures can undergo further conversion reactions toward other metal selenides, which we demonstrate by developing a shape-preserving cation exchange toward silver selenide. Moreover, our conversion strategy can readily be extended to convert calcium carbonate biominerals into metal selenide semiconductors. Hence, the here-presented self-assembly/conversion strategy opens exciting possibilities toward customizable metal selenides with complex user-defined 3D shapes.

Biomolecular 1D Necklace-like Nanostructures Tailoring 2D Janus Interfaces for Controllable 3D Enteric Biomaterials

Construction of well-ordered two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) assemblies using one-dimensional (1D) units is a hallmark of many biointerfaces such as skin. Mimicking the art of difunctional properties of biointerfaces, which skin exhibits as defense and shelter materials, has inspired the development of smart and responsive biomimetic interfaces. However, programming the long-range ordering of 1D base materials toward vigorous control over 2D and 3D hierarchical structures and material properties remains a daunting challenge. In this study, we put forward construction of 3D enteric biomaterials with a two-strata 2D Janus interface assembled from self-adaptation of 1D protein-polysaccharide nanostructures at an oil-water interface. The biomaterials feature a protein dermis accommodating oil droplets as a reservoir for bioactive compounds and a polysaccharide epidermis protecting them from gastric degradation. Furthermore, the epidermis can be fine-tuned with different thicknesses rendering enteric delivery of a bioactive cargo (coumarin-6) with controllable retention in the intestinal tract from 6 to 24 h. The results highlight a skin-inspired construction of enteric biomaterials by self-adaptation of 1D nanostructures at the oil-water interface toward 2D Janus biointerfaces and 3D microdevices, which can be tailored for intestinal treatments with intentional therapeutic efficacies.

Biomimetic mineralization based on self-assembling peptides

Biomimetic science has attracted great interest in the fields of chemistry, biology, materials science, and energy. Biomimetic mineralization is the process of synthesizing inorganic minerals under the control of organic molecules or biomolecules under mild conditions. Peptides are the motifs that constitute proteins, and can self-assemble into various hierarchical structures and show a high affinity for inorganic substances. Therefore, peptides can be used as building blocks for the synthesis of functional biomimetic materials. With the participation of peptides, the morphology, size, and composition of mineralized materials can be controlled precisely. Peptides not only provide well-defined templates for the nucleation and growth of inorganic nanomaterials but also have the potential to confer inorganic nanomaterials with high catalytic efficiency, selectivity, and biotherapeutic functions. In this review, we systematically summarize research progress in the formation mechanism, nanostructural manipulation, and applications of peptide-templated mineralized materials. These can further inspire researchers to design structurally complex and functionalized biomimetic materials with great promising applications.

The load-bearing mechanism of plant wings: A multiscale structural and mechanical analysis of the T. tipu samara

Spinning winged fruits ("helicopter" samaras) generate significant lift forces at relatively low velocities, which enable the wind to disperse them across long distances. The biological material of the samara sustains the aerodynamic loadings and maintains the physical shape of the samara in the air via a yet unknown load-bearing mechanism. Here, positing that this mechanism fundamentally originates from the macro-to-microscale structural and mechanical characteristics of the samara, we use sub-micron computer tomography, electron microscopy, and multi-scale mechanical experiments to map the structural and mechanical characteristics of the tipu tree (Tipuana tipu) samara down to the micrometer length scale. Then, using theoretical models, we characterize the multiscale structural-mechanical principles of the samara and use these principles to disclose the underlying load-bearing mechanism. We found that the structural motifs of the tipu tree samara are closely analogous to various other types and forms of winged fruits, suggesting that this load-bearing mechanism is widespread in plant wings. The structural-mechanical principles governing the samara bear unconventional design concepts, which pave the way toward the development and engineering of small-scale wing elements for miniature aviation platforms with specialized mechanical capabilities. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The biomaterial of plant wings grants them mechanical resistance to flight forces during wind dispersal. "Helicopter seeds" demonstrate an intricate load-bearing mechanism that spans three structure-functional scales of their biomaterial. This mechanism appears widespread in plant wings and may promote novel micro-engineering design guidelines for futuristic flight materials and small-scale aviation platforms.

Bio-inspired nacre-like composites with excellent mechanical properties, gas-barrier function and fire-retardant performances based on self-assembly between hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s and montmorillonite

The fabrication of mechanically robust multifunctional nanocomposite (NC) films using simple but effective strategies is a long-term challenge. Inspired by natural nacre, we designed and fabricated high-performance nacre-like NC films (Na-MTM/HBP) through the self-assembly of the hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (HBP) and montmorillonite (Na-MTM) using a vacuum filtration approach. The optimal Na-MTM/HBP NC film shows excellent mechanical strength (106 MPa), which can be attributed to the formation of numerous hydrogen bonds and the electrostatic interactions between hyperbranched HBP and Na-MTM nanosheets. Such films also exhibit excellent gas barrier and fire-fire-retardant owing to the high aspect ratio of the Na-MTM nanosheets. In this work, a class of high-performance NC films exhibiting good mechanical, gas barrier, and flame retardancy properties have been developed. These NC films have great potential in packing or coating materials.

Bioinspired Impact-Resistant and Self-Monitoring Nanofibrous Composites

Lightweight and impact-resistant materials with self-monitoring capability are highly desired for protective applications, but are challenging to be artificially fabricated. Herein, a scalable-manufactured aramid nanofiber (ANF)-based composite combining these key properties is presented. Inspired by the strengthening and toughening mechanisms relying on recoverable interfaces commonly existing in biological composites, mechanically weak but dense hydrogen bonds are introduced into the ANF interfaces to achieve simultaneously enhanced tensile strength (300 MPa), toughness (55 MJ m^-3 ), and impact resistance of the nanofibrous composite. The achieved mechanical property combination displays attractive advantages compared with that of most of previously reported nanocomposites. Additionally, the nanofibrous composite is designed with a capability for real-time self-monitoring of its structural safety during both quasi-static tensile and dynamic impact processes, based on the strain/damage-induced resistance variations of a conductive nanowire network inside it. These comprehensive properties enable the present nanofibrous composite with promising potential for protective applications.

Comparative nanoindentation study of biogenic and geological calcite

Biogenic minerals are often reported to be harder and tougher than their geological counterparts. However, quantitative comparison of their mechanical properties, particularly fracture toughness, is still limited. Here we provide a systematic comparison of geological and biogenic calcite (mollusk shell Atrina rigida prisms and Placuna placenta laths) through nanoindentation under both dry and 90% relative humidity conditions. Berkovich nanoindentation is used to reveal the mechanical anisotropy of geological calcite when loaded on different crystallographic planes, i.e., reduced modulus E_r{104} ≥ E_r{108} > E_r{001} and hardness H_{001} ≥ H_{104} ≥ H_{108}, and biogenic calcite has comparable modulus but increased hardness than geological calcite. Based on conical nanoindentation, we elucidate that plastic deformation is activated in geological calcite at the low-load regime (<20 mN), involving r{104} and f{012} dislocation slips as well as e{018} twinning, while cleavage fracture dominates under higher loads by cracking along {104} planes. In comparison, biogenic calcite tends to undergo fracture, while the intercrystalline organic interfaces contribute to damage confinement. In addition, increased humidity does not show a significant influence on the properties of geological calcite and the single-crystal A. rigida prisms, however, the laminate composite of P. placenta laths (layer thickness, ∼250-300 nm) exhibits increased toughness and decreased hardness and modulus. We believe the results of this study can provide a benchmark for future investigations on biominerals and bio-inspired materials.
