Abstract
Somatosensory neuroprostheses restore, replace, or enhance tactile and proprioceptive feedback for people with sensory impairments due to neurological disorders or injury. Somatosensory neuroprostheses typically couple sensor inputs from a wearable device, prosthesis, robotic device, or virtual reality system with electrical stimulation applied to the somatosensory nervous system via noninvasive or implanted interfaces. While prior research has mainly focused on technology development and proof-of-concept studies, recent acceleration of clinical studies in this area demonstrates the translational potential of somatosensory neuroprosthetic systems. In this review, we provide an overview of neurostimulation approaches currently undergoing human testing and summarize recent clinical findings on the perceptual, functional, and psychological impact of somatosensory neuroprostheses. We also cover current work toward the development of advanced stimulation paradigms to produce more natural and informative sensory feedback. Finally, we provide our perspective on the remaining challenges that need to be addressed prior to translation of somatosensory neuroprostheses.

Abstract
In the field of sensory neuroprostheses, one ultimate goal is for individuals to perceive artificial somatosensory information and use the prosthesis with high complexity that resembles an intact system. To this end, research has shown that stimulation-elicited somatosensory information improves prosthesis perception and task performance. While studies strive to achieve sensory integration, a crucial phenomenon that entails naturalistic interaction with the environment, this topic has not been commensurately reviewed. Therefore, here we present a perspective for understanding sensory integration in neuroprostheses. First, we review the engineering aspects and functional outcomes in sensory neuroprosthesis studies. In this context, we summarize studies that have suggested sensory integration. We focus on how they have used stimulation-elicited percepts to maximize and improve the reliability of somatosensory information. Next, we review studies that have suggested multisensory integration. These works have demonstrated that congruent and simultaneous multisensory inputs provided cognitive benefits such that an individual experiences a greater sense of authority over prosthesis movements (i.e., agency) and perceives the prosthesis as part of their own (i.e., ownership). Thereafter, we present the theoretical and neuroscience framework of sensory integration. We investigate how behavioral models and neural recordings have been applied in the context of sensory integration. Sensory integration models developed from intact-limb individuals have led the way to sensory neuroprosthesis studies to demonstrate multisensory integration. Neural recordings have been used to show how multisensory inputs are processed across cortical areas. Lastly, we discuss some ongoing research and challenges in achieving and understanding sensory integration in sensory neuroprostheses. Resolving these challenges would help to develop future strategies to improve the sensory feedback of a neuroprosthetic system.

Abstract
SUMMARY Innovations in prosthetic devices and neuroprosthetic control strategies have opened new frontiers for the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals undergoing amputation. Commercial prosthetic devices are now available with sophisticated electrical and mechanical components that can closely replicate the functions of the human musculoskeletal system. However, to truly recognize the potential of such prosthetic devices and develop the next generation of bionic limbs, a highly reliable prosthetic device control strategy is required. In the past few years, refined surgical techniques have enabled neuroprosthetic control strategies to record efferent motor and stimulate afferent sensory action potentials from a residual limb with extraordinary specificity, signal quality, and long-term stability. As a result, such control strategies are now capable of facilitating intuitive, real-time, and naturalistic prosthetic experiences for patients with amputations. This article summarizes the current state of upper extremity neuroprosthetic devices and discusses the leading control strategies that are critical to the ongoing advancement of prosthetic development and implementation.

Abstract
Phantom Limb Syndrome (PLS) can be defined as the disabling or painful sensation of the presence of a body part that is no longer present after its amputation. Anatomical changes involved in Phantom Limb Syndrome, occurring at peripheral, spinal and brain levels and include the formation of neuromas and scars, dorsal horn sensitization and plasticity, short-term and long-term modifications at molecular and topographical levels. The molecular reorganization processes of Phantom Limb Syndrome include NMDA receptors hyperactivation in the dorsal horn of the spinal column leading to inflammatory mechanisms both at a peripheral and central level. At the brain level, a central role has been recognized for sodium channels, BDNF and adenosine triphosphate receptors. In the paper we discuss current available pharmacological options with a final overview on non-pharmacological options in the pipeline.

Abstract
The loss of a hand disrupts the sophisticated neural pathways between the brain and the hand, severely affecting the level of independence of the patient and the ability to carry out daily work and social activities. Recent years have witnessed a rapid evolution of surgical techniques and technologies aimed at restoring dexterous motor functions akin to those of the human hand through bionic solutions, mainly relying on probing of electrical signals from the residual nerves and muscles. Here, we report the clinical implementation of an interface aimed at achieving this goal by exploiting muscle deformation, sensed through passive magnetic implants: the myokinetic interface. One participant with a transradial amputation received an implantation of six permanent magnets in three muscles of the residual limb. A truly self-contained myokinetic prosthetic arm embedding all hardware components and the battery within the prosthetic socket was developed. By retrieving muscle deformation caused by voluntary contraction through magnet localization, we were able to control in real time a dexterous robotic hand following both a direct control strategy and a pattern recognition approach. In just 6 weeks, the participant successfully completed a series of functional tests, achieving scores similar to those achieved when using myoelectric controllers, a standard-of-care solution, with comparable physical and mental workloads. This experience raised conceptual and technical limits of the interface, which nevertheless pave the way for further investigations in a partially unexplored field. This study also demonstrates a viable possibility for intuitively interfacing humans with robotic technologies.

Abstract
Electrical neuromodulation plays a pivotal role in enhancing patient outcomes among individuals suffering from neurological disorders. Implantable neural interfaces are vital components of the electrical neuromodulation system to ensure desirable performance; However, conventional devices are limited to a single function and are constructed with bulky and rigid materials, which often leads to mechanical incompatibility with soft tissue and an inability to adapt to the dynamic and complex 3D structures of biological systems. In addition, current implantable neural interfaces utilized in clinical settings primarily rely on wire-based techniques, which are associated with complications such as increased risk of infection, limited positioning options, and movement restrictions. Here, the state-of-art applications of electrical neuromodulation are presented. Material schemes and device structures that can be employed to develop robust and multifunctional neural interfaces, including flexibility, stretchability, biodegradability, self-healing, self-rolling, or morphing are discussed. Furthermore, multimodal wireless neuromodulation techniques, including optoelectronics, mechano-electrics, magnetoelectrics, inductive coupling, and electrochemically based self-powered devices are reviewed. In the end, future perspectives are given.

Abstract
Bioelectronics is a hot research topic, yet an important tool, as it facilitates the creation of advanced medical devices that interact with biological systems to effectively diagnose, monitor and treat a broad spectrum of health conditions. Electrical stimulation (ES) is a pivotal technique in bioelectronics, offering a precise, non-pharmacological means to modulate and control biological processes across molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ levels. This method holds the potential to restore or enhance physiological functions compromised by diseases or injuries by integrating sophisticated electrical signals, device interfaces, and designs tailored to specific biological mechanisms. This review explains the mechanisms by which ES influences cellular behaviors, introduces the essential stimulation principles, discusses the performance requirements for optimal ES systems, and highlights the representative applications. From this review, we can realize the potential of ES based bioelectronics in therapy, regenerative medicine and rehabilitation engineering technologies, ranging from tissue engineering to neurological technologies, and the modulation of cardiovascular and cognitive functions. This review underscores the versatility of ES in various biomedical contexts and emphasizes the need to adapt to complex biological and clinical landscapes it addresses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Approximately 89% of all service members with amputations do not return to duty. Restoring intuitive neural control with somatosensory sensation is a key to improving the safety and efficacy of prosthetic locomotion. However, natural somatosensory feedback from lower-limb prostheses has not yet been incorporated into any commercial prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS We developed a neuroprosthesis with intuitive bidirectional control and somatosensation and evoking phase-dependent locomotor reflexes, we aspire to significantly improve the prosthetic rehabilitation and long-term functional outcomes of U.S. amputees. We implanted the skin and bone integrated pylon with peripheral neural interface pylon into the cat distal tibia, electromyographic electrodes into the residual gastrocnemius muscle, and nerve cuff electrodes on the distal tibial and sciatic nerves. Results. The bidirectional neural interface that was developed was integrated into the existing passive Free-Flow Foot and Ankle prosthesis, WillowWood, Mount Sterling, OH. The Free-Flow Foot was chosen because it had the highest Index of Anthropomorphicity among lower-limb prostheses and was the first anthropomorphic prosthesis brought to market. Conclusion. The cats walked on a treadmill with no cutaneous feedback from the foot in the control condition and with their residual distal tibial nerve stimulated during the stance phase of walking.

Abstract
Restoring somatosensory feedback in individuals with lower-limb amputations would reduce the risk of falls and alleviate phantom limb pain. Here we show, in three individuals with transtibial amputation (one traumatic and two owing to diabetic peripheral neuropathy), that sensations from the missing foot, with control over their location and intensity, can be evoked via lateral lumbosacral spinal cord stimulation with commercially available electrodes and by modulating the intensity of stimulation in real time on the basis of signals from a wireless pressure-sensitive shoe insole. The restored somatosensation via closed-loop stimulation improved balance control (with a 19-point improvement in the composite score of the Sensory Organization Test in one individual) and gait stability (with a 5-point improvement in the Functional Gait Assessment in one individual). And over the implantation period of the stimulation leads, the three individuals experienced a clinically meaningful decrease in phantom limb pain (with an average reduction of nearly 70% on a visual analogue scale). Our findings support the further clinical assessment of lower-limb neuroprostheses providing somatosensory feedback.

Abstract
The human hand, with its intricate sensory capabilities, plays a pivotal role in our daily interactions with the world. This remarkable organ possesses a wide range of natural sensors that enrich our experiences, enabling us to perceive touch, position, and temperature. These natural sensors work in concert to provide us with a rich sensory experience, enabling us to distinguish between various textures, gauge the force of our grip, determine the position of our fingers without needing to see them, perceive the temperature of objects we come into contact with or detect if a cloth is wet or dry. This complex sensory system is fundamental to our ability to manipulate objects, explore our surroundings, and interact with the world and people around us. In this article, we summarize the research performed in our laboratories over the years and our findings to restore both touch, position, and temperature modalities. The combination of intraneural stimulation, sensory substitution, and wearable technology opens new possibilities for enhancing sensory feedback in prosthetic hands, promising improved functionality and a closer approximation to natural sensory experiences for individuals with limb differences.

Abstract
As both the proportion of older people and the length of life increases globally, a rise in age-related degenerative diseases, disability, and prolonged dependency is projected. However, more sophisticated biomedical materials, as well as an improved understanding of human disease, is forecast to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of conditions ranging from osteoarthritis to Alzheimer's disease as well as impact disease prevention. Another, albeit quieter, revolution is also taking place within society: human augmentation. In this context, humans seek to improve themselves, metamorphosing through self-discipline or more recently, through use of emerging medical technologies, with the goal of transcending aging and mortality. In this review, and in the pursuit of improved medical care following aging, disease, disability, or injury, we first highlight cutting-edge and emerging materials-based neuroprosthetic technologies designed to restore limb or organ function. We highlight the potential for these technologies to be utilized to augment human performance beyond the range of natural performance. We discuss and explore the growing social movement of human augmentation and the idea that it is possible and desirable to use emerging technologies to push the boundaries of what it means to be a healthy human into the realm of superhuman performance and intelligence. This potential future capability is contrasted with limitations in the right-to-repair legislation, which may create challenges for patients. Now is the time for continued discussion of the ethical strategies for research, implementation, and long-term device sustainability or repair.

Abstract
Bionic prosthetic hands hold the potential to replicate the functionality of human hands. The use of bionic limbs can assist amputees in performing everyday activities. This article systematically reviews the research progress on bionic prostheses, with a focus on control mechanisms, sensory feedback integration, and mechanical design innovations. It emphasizes the use of bioelectrical signals, such as electromyography (EMG), for prosthetic control and discusses the application of machine learning algorithms to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Additionally, the paper explores advancements in sensory feedback technologies, including tactile, visual, and auditory modalities, which enhance user interaction by providing essential environmental feedback. The mechanical design of prosthetic hands is also examined, with particular attention to achieving a balance between dexterity, weight, and durability. Our contribution consists of compiling current research trends and identifying key areas for future development, including the enhancement of control system integration and improving the aesthetic and functional resemblance of prostheses to natural limbs. This work aims to inform and inspire ongoing research that seeks to refine the utility and accessibility of prosthetic hands for amputees, emphasizing user-centric innovations.

Abstract
Neuromuscular control of bionic arms has constantly improved over the past years, however, restoration of sensation remains elusive. Previous approaches to reestablish sensory feedback include tactile, electrical, and peripheral nerve stimulation, however, they cannot recreate natural, intuitive sensations. Here, we establish an experimental biological sensorimotor interface and demonstrate its potential use in neuroprosthetics. We transfer a mixed nerve to a skeletal muscle combined with glabrous dermal skin transplantation, thus forming a bi-directional communication unit in a rat model. Morphological analyses indicate reinnervation of the skin, mechanoreceptors, NMJs, and muscle spindles. Furthermore, sequential retrograde labeling reveals specific sensory reinnervation at the level of the dorsal root ganglia. Electrophysiological recordings show reproducible afferent signals upon tactile stimulation and tendon manipulation. The results demonstrate the possibility of surgically creating an interface for both decoding efferent motor control, as well as encoding afferent tactile and proprioceptive feedback, and may indicate the way forward regarding clinical translation of biological communication pathways for neuroprosthetic applications.

Abstract
Objective. We intend to chronically restore somatosensation and provide high-fidelity myoelectric control for those with limb loss via a novel, distributed, high-channel-count, implanted system.Approach.We have developed the implanted Somatosensory Electrical Neurostimulation and Sensing (iSens®) system to support peripheral nerve stimulation through up to 64, 96, or 128 electrode contacts with myoelectric recording from 16, 8, or 0 bipolar sites, respectively. The rechargeable central device has Bluetooth® wireless telemetry to communicate to external devices and wired connections for up to four implanted satellite stimulation or recording devices. We characterized the stimulation, recording, battery runtime, and wireless performance and completed safety testing to support its use in human trials.Results.The stimulator operates as expected across a range of parameters and can schedule multiple asynchronous, interleaved pulse trains subject to total charge delivery limits. Recorded signals in saline show negligible stimulus artifact when 10 cm from a 1 mA stimulating source. The wireless telemetry range exceeds 1 m (direction and orientation dependent) in a saline torso phantom. The bandwidth supports 100 Hz bidirectional update rates of stimulation commands and data features or streaming select full bandwidth myoelectric signals. Preliminary first-in-human data validates the bench testing result.Significance.We developed, tested, and clinically implemented an advanced, modular, fully implanted peripheral stimulation and sensing system for somatosensory restoration and myoelectric control. The modularity in electrode type and number, including distributed sensing and stimulation, supports a wide variety of applications; iSens® is a flexible platform to bring peripheral neuromodulation applications to clinical reality. Abstract
Objective. Therapeutic brain stimulation is conventionally delivered using constant-frequency stimulation pulses. Several recent clinical studies have explored how unconventional and irregular temporal stimulation patterns could enable better therapy. However, it is challenging to understand which irregular patterns are most effective for different therapeutic applications given the massively high-dimensional parameter space.Approach. Here we applied many irregular stimulation patterns in a single neural circuit to demonstrate how they can enable new dimensions of neural control compared to conventional stimulation, to guide future exploration of novel stimulation patterns in translational settings. We optogenetically excited the septohippocampal circuit with constant-frequency, nested pulse, sinusoidal, and randomized stimulation waveforms, systematically varying their amplitude and frequency parameters.Main results.We first found equal entrainment of hippocampal oscillations: all waveforms provided similar gamma-power increase, whereas no parameters increased theta-band power above baseline (despite the mechanistic role of the medial septum in driving hippocampal theta oscillations). We then compared each of the effects of each waveform on high-dimensional multi-band activity states using dimensionality reduction methods. Strikingly, we found that conventional stimulation drove predominantly 'artificial' (different from behavioral activity) effects, whereas all irregular waveforms induced activity patterns that more closely resembled behavioral activity.Significance. Our findings suggest that irregular stimulation patterns are not useful when the desired mechanism is to suppress or enhance a single frequency band. However, novel stimulation patterns may provide the greatest benefit for neural control applications where entraining a particular mixture of bands (e.g. if they are associated with different symptoms) or behaviorally-relevant activity is desired.

Abstract
In neural prostheses, intensity modulation of a single channel (i.e., through a single stimulating electrode) has been achieved by increasing the magnitude or width of each stimulation pulse, which risks eliciting pain or paraesthesia; and by changing the stimulation rate, which leads to concurrent changes in perceived frequency. In this study, we sought to render a perception of tactile intensity and frequency independently, by means of temporal pulse train patterns of fixed magnitude, delivered non-invasively. Our psychophysical study exploits a previously discovered frequency coding mechanism, where the perceived frequency of stimulus pulses grouped into periodic bursts depends on the duration of the inter-burst interval, rather than the mean pulse rate or periodicity. When electrical stimulus pulses were organised into bursts, perceived intensity was influenced by the number of pulses within a burst, while perceived frequency was determined by the time between the end of one burst envelope and the start of the next. The perceived amplitude was modulated by 1.6× while perceived frequency was varied independently by 2× within the tested range (20-40 Hz). Thus, the sensation of intensity might be controlled independently from frequency through a single stimulation channel without having to vary the injected electrical current. This can form the basis for improving strategies in delivering more complex and natural sensations for prosthetic hand users.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental implantation has emerged as an efficient substitute for missing teeth, which is essential for restoring oral function and aesthetics. Compared to traditional denture repair approaches, dental implants offer better stability and sustainability. The position, angle, and depth of dental implants are crucial factors for their long-term success and necessitate high-precision operation and technical support. METHOD We propose an integrated dual-arm high-precision oral implant surgery navigation positioning system and a corresponding control strategy. Compared with traditional implant robots, the integrated dual-arm design greatly shortens the preparation time before surgery and simplifies the operation process. We propose a novel control flow and module for the proposed structure, including an Occluded Target Tracking Module (OTTM) for occlusion tracking, a Planting Plan Development Module (PPDM) for generating implant plans, and a Path Formulation Module (PFM) for controlling the movement path of the two robot arms. RESULT Under the coordinated control of the aforementioned modules, the robot achieved excellent accuracy in clinical trials. The average angular error and entry point error for five patients who underwent implant surgery using the proposed robot were 2.1° and 0.39 mm, respectively. CONCLUSION In essence, our study introduces an integrated dual-arm high-precision navigation system for oral implant surgery, resolving issues like lengthy preoperative preparation and static surgical planning. Clinical results confirm its efficacy, emphasizing its accuracy and precision in guiding oral implant procedures.

Abstract
Carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber electrodes have demonstrated exceptional spatial selectivity and sustained reliability in the context of intrafascicular electrical stimulation, as evidenced through rigorous animal experimentation. A significant presence of unmyelinated C fibers, known to induce uncomfortable somatosensory experiences, exists within peripheral nerves. This presence poses a considerable challenge to the excitation of myelinated Aβ fibers, which are crucial for tactile sensation. To achieve nuanced tactile sensory feedback utilizing CNT fiber electrodes, the selective stimulation of Aβ sensory afferents emerges as a critical factor. In confronting this challenge, the present investigation sought to refine and apply a rat sciatic-nerve model leveraging the capabilities of the COMSOL-NEURON framework. This approach enables a systematic evaluation of the influence exerted by stimulation parameters and electrode geometry on the activation dynamics of both myelinated Aβ and unmyelinated C fibers. The findings advocate for the utilization of current pulses featuring a pulse width of 600 μs, alongside the deployment of CNT fibers characterized by a diminutive diameter of 10 μm, with an exclusively exposed cross-sectional area, to facilitate reduced activation current thresholds. Comparative analysis under monopolar and bipolar electrical stimulation conditions revealed proximate activation thresholds, albeit with bipolar stimulation exhibiting superior fiber selectivity relative to its monopolar counterpart. Concerning pulse waveform characteristics, the adoption of an anodic-first biphasic stimulation modality is favored, taking into account the dual criteria of activation threshold and fiber selectivity optimization. Consequently, this investigation furnishes an efficacious stimulation paradigm for the selective activation of touch-related nerve fibers, alongside provisioning a comprehensive theoretical foundation for the realization of natural tactile feedback within the domain of prosthetic hand applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Current socket-based methods of prosthetic limb attachment are responsible for many of the dominant problems reported by persons with amputation. In this work, we introduce a new paradigm for attachment via electromagnetic attraction between a bone-anchored ferromagnetic implant and an external electromagnet. Our objective was to develop a design framework for electromagnetic attachment, and to evaluate this framework in the context of transfemoral amputation. METHODS We first used inverse dynamics to calculate the forces required to suspend a knee-ankle-foot prosthesis during gait. We then conducted cadaveric dissections to inform implant geometry and design a surgical methodology for covering the implant. We also developed an in silico framework to investigate how electromagnet design affects system performance. Simulations were validated against benchtop testing of a custom-built electromagnet. RESULTS The physical electromagnet matched simulations, with a root-mean-square percentage error of 4.2% between measured and predicted forces. Using this electromagnet, we estimate that suspension of a prosthesis during gait would require 33 W of average power. After 200 and 1000 steps of simulated walking, the temperature at the skin would increase 2.3 °C and 15.4 °C relative to ambient, respectively. CONCLUSION Our design framework produced an implant and electromagnet that could feasibly suspend a knee-ankle-foot prosthesis during short walking bouts. Future work will focus on optimization of this system to reduce heating during longer bouts. SIGNIFICANCE This work demonstrates the initial feasibility of an electromagnetic prosthetic attachment paradigm that has the potential to increase comfort and improve residual limb health for persons with amputation.

Abstract
Background Advanced prosthetic hands may embed nanosensors and microelectronics in their cosmetic skin. Heat influx may cause damage to these delicate structures. Protecting the integrity of the prosthetic hand becomes critical and necessary to ensure sustainable function. This study aims to mimic the sensorimotor control strategy of the human hand in perceiving nociceptive stimuli and triggering self-protective mechanisms and to investigate how similar neuromorphic mechanisms implemented in prosthetic hand can allow amputees to both volitionally release a hot object upon a nociceptive warning and achieve reinforced release via a bionic withdrawal reflex. Methods A steady-state temperature prediction algorithm was proposed to shorten the long response time of a thermosensitive temperature sensor. A hybrid sensory strategy for transmitting force and a nociceptive temperature warning using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation based on evoked tactile sensations was designed to reconstruct the nociceptive sensory loop for amputees. A bionic withdrawal reflex using neuromorphic muscle control technology was used so that the prosthetic hand reflexively opened when a harmful temperature was detected. Four able-bodied subjects and two forearm amputees randomly grasped a tube at the different temperatures based on these strategies. Results The average prediction error of temperature prediction algorithm was 8.30 ± 6.00%. The average success rate of six subjects in perceiving force and nociceptive temperature warnings was 86.90 and 94.30%, respectively. Under the reinforcement control mode in Test 2, the median reaction time of all subjects was 1.39 s, which was significantly faster than the median reaction time of 1.93 s in Test 1, in which two able-bodied subjects and two amputees participated. Results demonstrated the effectiveness of the integration of nociceptive sensory strategy and withdrawal reflex control strategy in a closed loop and also showed that amputees restored the warning of nociceptive sensation while also being able to withdraw from thermal danger through both voluntary and reflexive protection. Conclusion This study demonstrated that it is feasible to restore the sensorimotor ability of amputees to warn and react against thermal nociceptive stimuli. Results further showed that the voluntary release and withdrawal reflex can work together to reinforce heat protection. Nevertheless, fusing voluntary and reflex functions for prosthetic performance in activities of daily living awaits a more cogent strategy in sensorimotor control.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve injuries often result in severe personal and social burden, and even with surgical treatment, patients continue to have poor clinical outcomes. Over the past two decades, electrical stimulation has been shown to promote axonal regeneration and alleviate refractory neuropathic pain. The aim of this study was to analyse this field using a bibliometric approach. Literature was searched through Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) for the years 2002-2023. Literature analysis included: (1) Describing publication trends in the field. (2) Exploring collaborative network relationships. (3) Finding research advances and research hotspots in the field. (4) Summarizing research trends in the field. With the number of studies in this field still increasing, a total of 693 publications were included in the analysis. This field of research is interdisciplinary in nature. Research hotspots include peripheral nerve regeneration, the treatment of neuropathic pain, materials for nerve injury repair, and the restoration of sensory function in patients with peripheral nerve injury. Correspondingly, the development of nerve conduits and systems for peripheral nerve electrical stimulation, clinical trials of peripheral nerve electrical stimulation, and tactile recovery and movement for amputees have shown significant promise as future research trends in this field.

Abstract
The key to sEMG (surface electromyography)-based control of robotic hands is the utilization of sEMG signals from the affected hand of amputees to infer their motion intentions. With the advancements in deep learning, researchers have successfully developed viable solutions for CNN (Convolutional Neural Network)-based gesture recognition. However, most studies have primarily concentrated on utilizing sEMG data from the hands of healthy subjects, often relying on high-dimensional feature vectors obtained from a substantial number of electrodes. This approach has yielded high-performing sEMG recognition systems but has failed to consider the considerable inconvenience that the abundance of electrodes poses to the daily lives and work of patients. In this paper, we focused on transradial amputees and used sEMG data from the Ninapro DB3 database as our dataset. Firstly, we introduce a STFT (Short-Time Fourier Transform)-based time-frequency feature fusion map for sEMG. This map includes both time-frequency features and the time-frequency localization of sEMG signals. Secondly, we propose an Improved DenseNet (Dense Convolutional Network) model for recognizing motion intentions in the affected hand of amputees based on their sEMG signals. Finally, addressing the issue of optimizing the number of electrodes carried by amputees, we introduce the PCMIRR (Pearson Correlation and Motion Intention Recognition Rate) algorithm. This algorithm optimizes the number of channels by considering the Pearson correlation between the sEMG channels of amputees and the recognition rate of motion intentions in the affected hand based on single-channel sEMG data. The experimental results reveal that the recognition accuracy, recall, and F1 score achieved by the Improved DenseNet model were 93.82%, 93.61%, and 93.65%, respectively. When the number of electrodes was optimized to 8, the recognition accuracy reached 94.50%. In summary, this paper ultimately attained precise recognition of motion intentions in amputees' affected hands while utilizing the minimum number of sEMG channels. This method offers a novel approach to sEMG-based control of bionic robotic hands.

Abstract
Haptic human-machine interfaces (HHMIs) combine tactile sensation and haptic feedback to allow humans to interact closely with machines and robots, providing immersive experiences and convenient lifestyles. Significant progress has been made in developing wearable sensors that accurately detect physical and electrophysiological stimuli with improved softness, functionality, reliability, and selectivity. In addition, soft actuating systems have been developed to provide high-quality haptic feedback by precisely controlling force, displacement, frequency, and spatial resolution. In this Review, we discuss the latest technological advances of soft sensors and actuators for the demonstration of wearable HHMIs. We particularly focus on highlighting material and structural approaches that enable desired sensing and feedback properties necessary for effective wearable HHMIs. Furthermore, promising practical applications of current HHMI technology in various areas such as the metaverse, robotics, and user-interactive devices are discussed in detail. Finally, this Review further concludes by discussing the outlook for next-generation HHMI technology.

Abstract
While neurostimulation technologies are rapidly approaching clinical applications for sensorimotor disorders, the impact of electrical stimulation on network dynamics is still unknown. Given the high degree of shared processing in neural structures, it is critical to understand if neurostimulation affects functions that are related to, but not targeted by, the intervention. Here, we approach this question by studying the effects of electrical stimulation of cutaneous afferents on unrelated processing of proprioceptive inputs. We recorded intraspinal neural activity in four monkeys while generating proprioceptive inputs from the radial nerve. We then applied continuous stimulation to the radial nerve cutaneous branch and quantified the impact of the stimulation on spinal processing of proprioceptive inputs via neural population dynamics. Proprioceptive pulses consistently produce neural trajectories that are disrupted by concurrent cutaneous stimulation. This disruption propagates to the somatosensory cortex, suggesting that electrical stimulation can perturb natural information processing across the neural axis.

Abstract
Artificial communication with the brain through peripheral nerve stimulation shows promising results in individuals with sensorimotor deficits. However, these efforts lack an intuitive and natural sensory experience. In this study, we design and test a biomimetic neurostimulation framework inspired by nature, capable of "writing" physiologically plausible information back into the peripheral nervous system. Starting from an in-silico model of mechanoreceptors, we develop biomimetic stimulation policies. We then experimentally assess them alongside mechanical touch and common linear neuromodulations. Neural responses resulting from biomimetic neuromodulation are consistently transmitted towards dorsal root ganglion and spinal cord of cats, and their spatio-temporal neural dynamics resemble those naturally induced. We implement these paradigms within the bionic device and test it with patients (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03350061). He we report that biomimetic neurostimulation improves mobility (primary outcome) and reduces mental effort (secondary outcome) compared to traditional approaches. The outcomes of this neuroscience-driven technology, inspired by the human body, may serve as a model for advancing assistive neurotechnologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The upper extremity and particularly the hands are crucial for patients in interacting with their environment, therefore amputations or severe damage with loss of hand function significantly impact their quality of life. In cases where biological reconstruction is not feasible or does not lead to sufficient success, bionic reconstruction plays a key role in patient care. Classical myoelectric prostheses are controlled using two signals derived from surface electrodes in the area of the stump muscles. Prosthesis control, especially in high amputations, is then limited and cumbersome. The surgical technique of Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) offers an innovative solution: The major arm nerves that have lost their target organs due to amputation are rerouted to muscles in the stump area. This enables the establishment of cognitive control signals that allow significantly improved prosthesis control. PATIENTS/MATERIALS AND METHODS A selective literature review on TMR and bionic reconstruction was conducted, incorporating relevant articles and discussing them considering the clinical experience of our research group. Additionally, a clinical case is presented. RESULTS Bionic reconstruction combined with Targeted Muscle Reinnervation enables intuitive prosthetic control with simultaneous movement of various prosthetic degrees of freedom and the treatment of neuroma and phantom limb pain. Long-term success requires a high level of patient compliance and intensive signal training during the prosthetic rehabilitation phase. Despite technological advances, challenges persist, especially in enhancing signal transmission and integrating natural sensory feedback into bionic prostheses. CONCLUSION TMR surgery represents a significant advancement in the bionic care of amputees. Employing selective nerve transfers for signal multiplication and amplification, opens up possibilities for improving myoelectric prosthesis function and thus enhancing patient care. Advances in the area of external prosthetic components, improvements in the skeletal connection due to osseointegration and more fluid signal transmission using wireless, fully implanted electrode systems will lead to significant progress in bionic reconstruction, both in terms of precision of movement and embodiment.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve interfaces (PNIs) are electrical systems designed to integrate with peripheral nerves in patients, such as following central nervous system (CNS) injuries to augment or replace CNS control and restore function. We review the literature for clinical trials and studies containing clinical outcome measures to explore the utility of human applications of PNIs. We discuss the various types of electrodes currently used for PNI systems and their functionalities and limitations. We discuss important design characteristics of PNI systems, including biocompatibility, resolution and specificity, efficacy, and longevity, to highlight their importance in the current and future development of PNIs. The clinical outcomes of PNI systems are also discussed. Finally, we review relevant PNI clinical trials that were conducted, up to the present date, to restore the sensory and motor function of upper or lower limbs in amputees, spinal cord injury patients, or intact individuals and describe their significant findings. This review highlights the current progress in the field of PNIs and serves as a foundation for future development and application of PNI systems.

Abstract
Background The societal burden of chronic pain and the contribution-in-part to the opioid crisis, is a strong motivation to improve and expand non-addictive treatments, including spinal cord stimulation (SCS). For several decades standard SCS has consisted in delivery of tonic pulses with static parameter settings in frequency, pulse width, and amplitude. These static parameters have limited ability to personalize the quality of paresthesia, the dermatomal coverage, and thus may affect SCS efficacy. Further, static settings may contribute to the build-up of tolerance or loss of efficacy of the therapy over time in some patients. Methods We conducted an acute exploratory study to evaluate the effects of SCS using time-dynamic pulses as compared to time-static (conventional tonic) stimulation pulses, with the hypotheses that dynamic pulse SCS may enable beneficial tailoring of the sensation and the patient's expectation for better pain relief with SCS. During a single clinic visit, consented subjects undergoing a standard SCS trial had their implanted leads temporarily connected to an investigational external stimulator capable of delivering time-static and six categories of time-dynamic pulse sequences, each characterized by continuously varying a stimulation parameter. Study subjects provided several assessments while blinded to the stimulation pattern, including: drawing of paresthesia maps, descriptions of sensation, and ratings for comfort and helpfulness to pain relief. Results Even without optimization of the field location, a majority of subjects rated sensations from dynamic stimulation as better or equal to that of static stimulation for comfortableness and for helpfulness to pain relief. The initial data showed a gender and/or pain dermatomal location related preference to a stimulation pattern. In particular, female subjects and subjects with pain at higher dermatomes tended to rank the sensation from dynamic stimulation better. Dynamic stimulation produced greater pain coverage without optimization; in 70% (9/13) of subjects, maximal pain coverage was achieved with a dynamic stimulation pattern. There was also greater variety in the words used by patients to describe stimulation sensation in the free text and free form verbal descriptions associated with dynamic stimulation. Conclusions With the same electrode configuration and comparable parameter settings, acute SCS using dynamic pulses produced more positive ratings, expanded paresthesia coverage, and greater variation in sensation as compared to SCS using static pulses, suggesting that dynamic stimulation has the potential to improve capabilities of SCS for the treatment of chronic pain. Abstract
In individuals with sensory-motor impairments, missing limb functions can be restored using neuroprosthetic devices that directly interface with the nervous system. However, restoring the natural tactile experience through electrical neural stimulation requires complex encoding strategies. Indeed, they are presently limited in effectively conveying or restoring tactile sensations by bandwidth constraints. Neuromorphic technology, which mimics the natural behavior of neurons and synapses, holds promise for replicating the encoding of natural touch, potentially informing neurostimulation design. In this perspective, we propose that incorporating neuromorphic technologies into neuroprostheses could be an effective approach for developing more natural human-machine interfaces, potentially leading to advancements in device performance, acceptability, and embeddability. We also highlight ongoing challenges and the required actions to facilitate the future integration of these advanced technologies.

Abstract
Individuals with upper limb loss lack sensation of the missing hand, which can negatively impact their daily function. Several groups have attempted to restore this sensation through electrical stimulation of residual nerves. The purpose of this study was to explore the utility of regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNIs) in eliciting referred sensation. In four participants with upper limb loss, we characterized the quality and location of sensation elicited through electrical stimulation of RPNIs over time. We also measured functional stimulation ranges (sensory perception and discomfort thresholds), sensitivity to changes in stimulation amplitude, and ability to differentiate objects of different stiffness and sizes. Over a period of up to 54 months, stimulation of RPNIs elicited sensations that were consistent in quality (e.g. tingling, kinesthesia) and were perceived in the missing hand and forearm. The location of elicited sensation was partially-stable to stable in 13 of 14 RPNIs. For 5 of 7 RPNIs tested, participants demonstrated a sensitivity to changes in stimulation amplitude, with an average just noticeable difference of 45 nC. In a case study, one participant was provided RPNI stimulation proportional to prosthetic grip force. She identified four objects of different sizes and stiffness with 56% accuracy with stimulation alone and 100% accuracy when stimulation was combined with visual feedback of hand position. Collectively, these experiments suggest that RPNIs have the potential to be used in future bi-directional prosthetic systems.

Abstract
The last few years witnessed radical improvements in lower-limb prostheses. Researchers have presented innovative solutions to overcome the limits of the first generation of prostheses, refining specific aspects which could be implemented in future prostheses designs. Each aspect of lower-limb prostheses has been upgraded, but despite these advances, a number of deficiencies remain and the most capable limb prostheses fall far short of the capabilities of the healthy limb. This article describes the current state of prosthesis technology; identifies a number of deficiencies across the spectrum of lower limb prosthetic components with respect to users' needs; and discusses research opportunities in design and control that would substantially improve functionality concerning each deficiency. In doing so, the authors present a roadmap of patients related issues that should be addressed in order to fulfill the vision of a next-generation, neurally-integrated, highly-functional lower limb prosthesis.

Abstract
Despite the increasing incidence and prevalence of amputation across the globe, individuals with acquired limb loss continue to struggle with functional recovery and chronic pain. A more complete understanding of the motor and sensory remodeling of the peripheral and central nervous system that occurs postamputation may help advance clinical interventions to improve the quality of life for individuals with acquired limb loss. The purpose of this article is to first provide background clinical context on individuals with acquired limb loss and then to provide a comprehensive review of the known motor and sensory neural adaptations from both animal models and human clinical trials. Finally, the article bridges the gap between basic science researchers and clinicians that treat individuals with limb loss by explaining how current clinical treatments may restore function and modulate phantom limb pain using the underlying neural adaptations described above. This review should encourage the further development of novel treatments with known neurological targets to improve the recovery of individuals postamputation.Significance Statement In the United States, 1.6 million people live with limb loss; this number is expected to more than double by 2050. Improved surgical procedures enhance recovery, and new prosthetics and neural interfaces can replace missing limbs with those that communicate bidirectionally with the brain. These advances have been fairly successful, but still most patients experience persistent problems like phantom limb pain, and others discontinue prostheses instead of learning to use them daily. These problematic patient outcomes may be due in part to the lack of consensus among basic and clinical researchers regarding the plasticity mechanisms that occur in the brain after amputation injuries. Here we review results from clinical and animal model studies to bridge this clinical-basic science gap.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Information transmission into the human nervous system is the basis for a variety of prosthetic applications. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) systems are widely available, have a well documented safety record, can be implanted minimally invasively, and are known to stimulate afferent pathways. Nonetheless, SCS devices are not yet used for computer-brain-interfacing applications. OBJECTIVE Here we aimed to establish computer-to-brain communication via medical SCS implants in a group of 20 individuals who had been operated for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain. METHODS In the initial phase, we conducted interface calibration with the aim of determining personalized stimulation settings that yielded distinct and reproducible sensations. These settings were subsequently utilized to generate inputs for a range of behavioral tasks. We evaluated the required calibration time, task training duration, and the subsequent performance in each task. RESULTS We could establish a stable spinal computer-brain interface in 18 of the 20 participants. Each of the 18 then performed one or more of the following tasks: A rhythm-discrimination task (n = 13), a Morse-decoding task (n = 3), and/or two different balance/body-posture tasks (n = 18; n = 5). The median calibration time was 79 min. The median training time for learning to use the interface in a subsequent task was 1:40 min. In each task, every participant demonstrated successful performance, surpassing chance levels. CONCLUSION The results constitute the first proof-of-concept of a general purpose computer-brain interface paradigm that could be deployed on present-day medical SCS platforms.

Abstract
Electrotactile feedback is a cost-effective and versatile method to provide new information or to augment intrinsic tactile feedback. As tactile feedback provides critical information for human-environment interaction, electrotactile feedback, accordingly, has many purposes to improve the quality of human-environment interaction in both direct and remote settings. However, electrotactile feedback overlays tingling sensation on top of the natural tactile feedback. To better characterize electrotactile feedback and understand the origin of the tingling sensation, a need arises to characterize the human perception of electrotactile feedback qualitatively and quantitatively, while varying the key stimulation parameters, namely amplitude and frequency. This study consists of two experiments. In the first experiment, the voltage for each subject was characterized by setting perception and discomfort thresholds. In the second experiment, subjects received electrical stimulation in 9 different combinations of voltages and frequencies. On delivering stimulation with each parameter combination, subjects reported their perception in two comparative scales-pressure vs. tingling and constant vs. pulsing. Subjects also reported the location of perception for stimulation with every parameter combination. More tingling and less pressure was reported as frequency increased, while the tingling-pressure percept was not affected by the amplitude change. Additionally, less pulsing and more constant was reported as frequency increased, while the pulsing-constant percept was not affected by the amplitude change. Concurrently, the normalized level of voltage thresholds was decreased as frequency increased. Dependency of tingling-pressure percept on stimulation frequency suggests that incongruency between the stimulation frequency and the natural firing rate of the sensory neuron would be an important factor of the tingling sensation. This study is a steppingstone to further demystify the origin of the tingling percept caused by electrical stimulation, thus broadening the use of transcutaneous electrical stimulation as a way of providing tactile cue or augmentation.

Abstract
Objective.This study's objective is to understand distally-referred surface electrical nerve stimulation (DR-SENS) and evaluates the effects of electrode placement, polarity, and stimulation intensity on the location of elicited sensations in non-disabled individuals.Approach.A two-phased human experiment was used to characterize DR-SENS. In Experiment One, we explored 182 electrode combinations to identify a subset of electrode position combinations that would be most likely to elicit distally-referred sensations isolated to the index finger without discomfort. In Experiment Two, we further examined this subset of electrode combinations to determine the effect of stimulation intensity and electrode position on perceived sensation location. Stimulation thresholds were evaluated using parameter estimation by sequential testing and sensation locations were characterized using psychometric intensity tests.Main Results.We found that electrode positions distal to the wrist can consistently evoke distally referred sensations with no significant polarity dependency. The finger-palm combination had the most occurrences of distal sensations, and the different variations of this combination did not have a significant effect on sensation location. Increasing stimulation intensity significantly expanded the area of the sensation, moved the most distal sensation distally, and moved the vertical centroid proximally. Also, a large anodic-leading electrode at the elbow mitigated all sensation at the anodic-leading electrode site while using symmetric stimulation waveforms. Furthermore, this study showed that the most intense sensation for a given percept can be distally referred. Lastly, for each participant, at least one of the finger-palm combinations evaluated in this study worked at both perception threshold and maximum comfortable stimulation intensities.Significance.These findings show that a non-invasive surface electrical stimulation charge modulated haptic interface can be used to elicit distally-referred sensations on non-disabled users. Furthermore, these results inform the design of novel haptic interfaces and other applications of surface electrical stimulation based haptic feedback on electrodes positioned distally from the wrist.

Abstract
Efforts to design devices emulating complex cognitive abilities and response processes of biological systems have long been a coveted goal. Recent advancements in flexible electronics, mirroring human tissue's mechanical properties, hold significant promise. Artificial neuron devices, hinging on flexible artificial synapses, bioinspired sensors, and actuators, are meticulously engineered to mimic the biological systems. However, this field is in its infancy, requiring substantial groundwork to achieve autonomous systems with intelligent feedback, adaptability, and tangible problem-solving capabilities. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in artificial neuron devices. It starts with fundamental principles of artificial synaptic devices and explores artificial sensory systems, integrating artificial synapses and bioinspired sensors to replicate all five human senses. A systematic presentation of artificial nervous systems follows, designed to emulate fundamental human nervous system functions. The review also discusses potential applications and outlines existing challenges, offering insights into future prospects. We aim for this review to illuminate the burgeoning field of artificial neuron devices, inspiring further innovation in this captivating area of research.

Abstract
Introduction Either non-invasive somatotopic or substitute sensory feedback is capable of conveying a single modality of sensory information from prosthetic hands to amputees. However, the neurocognitive ability of amputees to integrate multi-modality sensory information for functional discrimination is unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the fusion of non-invasive somatotopic tactile and substitute aperture feedbacks for profile perception of multiple physical features during grasping objects. Methods Two left transradial amputees with somatotopic evoked tactile sensation (ETS) of five fingers participated in the study. The tactile information of prosthetic hand was provided to amputees by the ETS feedback elicited on the stump projected finger map. Hand aperture information was conveyed to amputees with substitute electrotactile stimulation on the forearm or upper arm. Two types of sensory feedback were integrated to a commercial prosthetic hand. The efficacy of somatotopic ETS feedback on object length identification task was assessed with or without substitute aperture stimulation. The object size identification task was utilized to assess how ETS stimulation at the stump may affect aperture perception with stimulation on the ipsilateral upper arm or forearm. Finally, the task of identifying combined length and size was conducted to evaluate the ability of amputees to integrate the dual modalities of sensory feedback for perceiving profile features. Results The study revealed that amputee subjects can effectively integrate the ETS feedback with electrotactile substitutive feedback for object profile discrimination. Specifically, ETS was robust to provide object length information with electrotactile stimulation at either the forearm or upper arm. However, electrotactile stimulation at the upper arm for aperture perception was less susceptible to the interference of ETS stimulation than at the forearm. Discussion Amputee subjects are able to combine somatotopic ETS and aperture feedbacks for identifying multi-dimensional features in object profiling. The two sensory streams of information can be fused effectively without mutual interference for functional discrimination.

Abstract
Objective.Nerve rehabilitation following nerve injury or surgery at the wrist level is a lengthy process during which not only peripheral nerves regrow towards receptors and muscles, but also the brain undergoes plastic changes. As a result, at the time when nerves reach their targets, the brain might have already allocated some of the areas within the somatosensory cortex that originally processed hand signals to some other regions of the body. The aim of this study is to show that it is possible to evoke a variety of somatotopic sensations related to the hand while stimulating proximally to the injury, therefore, providing the brain with the relevant inputs from the hand regions affected by the nerve damage.Approach.This study included electrical stimulation of 28 able-bodied participants where an electrode that acted as a cathode was placed above the Median nerve at the wrist level. The parameters of electrical stimulation, amplitude, frequency, and pulse shape, were modulated within predefined ranges to evaluate their influence on the evoked sensations.Main results.Using this methodology, the participants reported a wide variety of somatotopic sensations from the hand regions distal to the stimulation electrode.Significance.Furthermore, to propose an accelerated stimulation tuning procedure that could be implemented in a clinical protocol and/or standalone device for providing meaningful sensations to the somatosensory cortex during nerve regeneration, we trained machine-learning techniques using the gathered data to predict the location/area, naturalness, and sensation type of the evoked sensations following different stimulation patterns.

Abstract
Background Every year, more than 90,000 U.S. women undergo mastectomy. More than 40% have reconstruction. Following reconstruction, most women experience persistent partial or complete numbness of the reconstructed breasts, and many experience pain. Yet, breast reconstruction procedures focus largely on esthetic outcomes with mixed impact on sensory outcomes and little attention to pain. This study examines whether and how breast sensation is important to women. Materials and Methods Conventional content analysis of extant qualitative data from a clinical registry (29 women with prior breast surgery for cancer, 2008-2022), a volunteer community sample (qualitative interviews with 6 women with and 5 without breast cancer, 2019), and from a Twitter social media survey (N = 32, 2022). Results Functions of the breast identified by women with and without cancer include breastfeeding, sexual function, and femininity. Five interrelated themes on the importance of breast sensation emerged among women with breast cancer history: sexual function, experience of partnered sex or relationship with one's sexual partner, breast embodiment, effect of breast pain on sexual function, and importance to psychological wellbeing. Women, advocates, and clinicians described a lack of patient-physician communication in this domain that exacerbates the negative impact of breast sensation loss on health and wellbeing. Conclusions Breast sensation is important to women following mastectomy, yet a gap exists in patient-physician communication about the impact of mastectomy and reconstruction on breast sensory function. Lessons for physicians, scientists, and skeptics are conveyed about why the basic integrity of women's bodies matters for practice and science.

Abstract
Somatosensory neuroprostheses are devices with the potential to restore the senses of touch and movement from prosthetic limbs for people with limb amputation or paralysis. By electrically stimulating the peripheral or central nervous system, these devices evoke sensations that appear to emanate from the missing or insensate limb, and when paired with sensors on the prosthesis, they can improve the functionality and embodiment of the prosthesis. There have been major advances in the design of these systems over the past decade, although several important steps remain before they can achieve widespread clinical adoption outside the lab setting. Here, we provide a brief overview of somatosensory neuroprostheses and explores these hurdles and potential next steps towards clinical translation.

Abstract
Intuitive and perceptual neuroprosthetic systems require a high degree of neural control and a variety of sensory feedback, but reliable neural interfaces for long-term use that maintain their functionality are limited. Here, a novel hybrid bionic interface is presented, fabricated by integrating a biological interface (regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI)) and a peripheral neural interface to enhance the neural interface performance between a nerve and bionic limbs. This interface utilizes a shape memory polymer buckle that can be easily implanted on a severed nerve and make contact with both the nerve and the muscle graft after RPNI formation. It is demonstrated that this interface can simultaneously record different signal information via the RPNI and the nerve, as well as stimulate them separately, inducing different responses. Furthermore, it is shown that this interface can record naturally evoked signals from a walking rabbit and use them to control a robotic leg. The long-term functionality and biocompatibility of this interface in rabbits are evaluated for up to 29 weeks, confirming its promising potential for enhancing prosthetic control.

Abstract
Recently, non-invasive proximal nerve stimulation has been widely investigated to restore tactile sensations. It has been demonstrated that tactile sensations in the hand could be elicited by nerve stimulation on the upper arm. However, it is still unknown whether tactile sensations could be elicited by stimulation at a proximal location close to the neck. In this study, non-invasive proximal nerve stimulation tests were performed to elicit tactile sensations in the hand of subjects. Six Ag/AgCl gel electrodes (2 × 3) were placed on the supraclavicular fossa where the proximal parts of the brachial plexus nerves were located. Then, fifteen potential electrode pairs were tested to explore whether tactile sensations could be elicited by non-invasive proximal nerve stimulation. Eight able-bodied subjects (male) were recruited to participate in the test. The stimulated sensation regions in the hand and the sensory intensity were reported and recorded during the experiment. The results demonstrated that the tactile sensations in various regions in the hand could be elicited through non-invasive nerve stimulation at the proximal location close to the neck.

Abstract
Miniature wireless bioelectronic implants that can operate for extended periods of time can transform how we treat disorders by acting rapidly on precise nerves and organs in a way that drugs cannot. To reach this goal, materials and methods are needed to wirelessly transfer energy through the body or harvest energy from the body itself. We review some of the capabilities of emerging energy transfer methods to identify the performance envelope for existing technology and discover where opportunities lie to improve how much-and how efficiently-we can deliver energy to the tiny bioelectronic implants that can support emerging medical technologies.

Abstract
Sensory Substitution (SS) allows the elaboration of information via non preferential sensory modalities. This phenomenon occurs in robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), in which haptic feedback is lacking. It has been suggested that SS could sustain surgeons' proficiency by means of visual clues for inferring tactile information, that also promotes the feeling of haptic phantom sensations. A critical role in reaching a good performance in procedural tasks is also sustained by the Sense of Embodiment (SE), that is, the capacity to integrate objects into subjective bodily self-representation. As SE is enhanced by haptic sensations, we hypothesize a role of SS in promoting SE in RAS. Accordingly, the goal of this systematic review is to summarize the evidence pertaining the study of SS in RAS in order to highlight the impact on the performance, and to identify a mediating role of the SE in increasing dexterity in RAS. Eight studies selected from the MEDLINE and Scopus® databases met inclusion criteria for a qualitative synthesis. Results indicated that haptic to other modalities SS enhanced force consistency and accuracy, and decreased surgeon fatigue. Expert surgeons, as compared to novices, showed a better natural SS processing, testified by a proficient performance with and without SS aids. No studies investigated the mediating role of SE. These findings indicate that SS is subjected to learning and memory processes that help surgeons to rapidly derive haptic-correlates from visual clues, which are highly required for a good performance. Also, the higher ability of doing SS and the associated perception of haptic sensations might increase multisensory integration, which might sustain performance.

Abstract
Restoration of sensorimotor function after amputation has remained challenging because of the lack of human-machine interfaces that provide reliable control, feedback, and attachment. Here, we present the clinical implementation of a transradial neuromusculoskeletal prosthesis-a bionic hand connected directly to the user's nervous and skeletal systems. In one person with unilateral below-elbow amputation, titanium implants were placed intramedullary in the radius and ulna bones, and electromuscular constructs were created surgically by transferring the severed nerves to free muscle grafts. The native muscles, free muscle grafts, and ulnar nerve were implanted with electrodes. Percutaneous extensions from the titanium implants provided direct skeletal attachment and bidirectional communication between the implanted electrodes and a prosthetic hand. Operation of the bionic hand in daily life resulted in improved prosthetic function, reduced postamputation, and increased quality of life. Sensations elicited via direct neural stimulation were consistently perceived on the phantom hand throughout the study. To date, the patient continues using the prosthesis in daily life. The functionality of conventional artificial limbs is hindered by discomfort and limited and unreliable control. Neuromusculoskeletal interfaces can overcome these hurdles and provide the means for the everyday use of a prosthesis with reliable neural control fixated into the skeleton.

Abstract
Accurate assessment of hand dexterity plays a critical role in informing rehabilitation and care of upper-limb hemiparetic stroke patients. Common upper-limb assessments, such as the Box and Blocks Test and Nine Hole Peg Test, primarily evaluate gross motor function in terms of speed. These assessments neglect an individual's ability to finely regulate grip force, which is critical in activities of daily living, such as manipulating fragile objects. Here we present the Electronic Grip Gauge (EGG), an instrumented fragile object that assesses both gross and fine motor function. Embedded with a load cell, accelerometer, and Hall-effect sensor, the EGG measures grip force, acceleration, and relative position (via magnetic fields) in real time. The EGG can emit an audible "break" sound when the applied grip force exceeds a threshold. The number of breaks, transfer duration, and applied forces are automatically logged in real-time. Using the EGG, we evaluated sensorimotor function in implicit grasping and gentle grasping for the non-paretic and paretic hands of 3 hemiparetic stroke patients. For all participants, the paretic hand took longer to transfer the EGG during implicit grasping. For 2 of 3 participants, grip forces were significantly greater for the paretic hand during gentle grasping. Differences in implicit grasping forces were unique to each participant. This work constitutes an important step towards more widespread and quantitative measures of sensorimotor function, which may ultimately lead to improved personalized rehabilitation and better patient outcomes.

Abstract
Achieving multicapability in a single soft gripper for handling ultrasoft, ultrathin, and ultraheavy objects is challenging due to the tradeoff between compliance, strength, and precision. Here, combining experiments, theory, and simulation, we report utilizing angle-programmed tendril-like grasping trajectories for an ultragentle yet ultrastrong and ultraprecise gripper. The single gripper can delicately grasp fragile liquids with minimal contact pressure (0.05 kPa), lift objects 16,000 times its own weight, and precisely grasp ultrathin, flexible objects like 4-μm-thick sheets and 2-μm-diameter microfibers on flat surfaces, all with a high success rate. Its scalable and material-independent design allows for biodegradable noninvasive grippers made from natural leaves. Explicitly controlled trajectories facilitate its integration with robotic arms and prostheses for challenging tasks, including picking grapes, opening zippers, folding clothes, and turning pages. This work showcases soft grippers excelling in extreme scenarios with potential applications in agriculture, food processing, prosthesis, biomedicine, minimally invasive surgeries, and deep-sea exploration.

Abstract
Modulation in the temporal pattern of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), such as Pulse width modulated (PWM), has been considered a new dimension in pain and neurorehabilitation therapy. Recently, the potentials of PWM TENS have been studied on sensory profiles and corticospinal activity. However, the underlying mechanism of PWM TENS on cortical network which might lead to pain alleviation is not yet investigated. Therefore, we recorded cortical activity using electroencephalography (EEG) from 12 healthy subjects and assessed the alternation of the functional connectivity at the cortex level up to an hour following the PWM TENS and compared that with the effect of conventional TENS. The connectivity between eight brain regions involved in sensory and pain processing was calculated based on phase lag index and spearman correlation. The alteration in segregation and integration of information in the network were investigated using graph theory. The proposed analysis discovered several statistically significant network changes between PWM TENS and conventional TENS, such as increased local strength and efficiency of the network in high gamma-band in primary and secondary somatosensory sources one hour following stimulation. Our findings regarding the long-lasting desired effects of PWM TENS support its potential as a therapeutic intervention in clinical research.
