Switching indoor fuels and the incidence of physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity: A prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

In developing countries, including China, solid-fuel-based heating and cooking is common. For older people, the multimorbidity prevalence is exceptionally high. Nevertheless, studies on the associations of indoor solid fuels use, especially switching fuels types, on multimorbidity in middle-aged and older people is scarce.

METHODS

Data from five waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were used in this study. Indoor fuels were classified as solid or clean fuels. Physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity (PPC-multimorbidity) was defined as the simultaneous presence of three disease types (physical illness, psychological disorders, cognitive impairment). Using Cox proportional risk models, hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI) were calculated to investigate the associations of heating- and cooking-related baseline indoor fuels and switching indoor fuels with PPC-multimorbidity incidence.

RESULTS

In the heating (n=3121, mean age=56.55 years, male proportion=54.25 %) and cooking (n=3574, mean age=56.67 years, male proportion=52.94 %) analyses, 75.07 % and 45.64 % of the participants used solid fuels at baseline, and 564 (18.07 %) and 613 (17.15 %) PPC-multimorbidity cases were diagnosed during follow-up, respectively. Participants with baseline heating- and cooking-based solid fuels use had greater PPC-multimorbidity incidences [HRs (95 % CIs): 1.23 (0.98, 1.55) and 1.44 (1.21, 1.73)], respectively. Additionally, combined baseline heating- and cooking-based solid fuels use was associated with even greater PPC-multimorbidity incidence [HR (95 % CI): 1.55 (1.18, 2.04)]. Persistent solid fuels use obviously increased the PPC-multimorbidity incidence [HRs (95 % CIs): 2.43 (1.67, 3.55) for heating and 2.63 (2.03, 3.40) for cooking]. Moreover, switching from solid to clean fuels was associated with a significantly decreased PPC-multimorbidity incidence [HRs (95 % CIs): 0.27 (0.20, 0.35) for heating and 0.36 (0.28, 0.46) for cooking].

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term solid-fuels use is associated with an increased PPC-multimorbidity incidence, and switching to cleaner fuels is associated with a decreased PPC-multimorbidity incidence in adults aged ≥45 years.

Regulation-driven changes in PM2.5 sources in China from 2013 to 2019, a critical review and trend analysis

Identifying changes in source-specific fine particles (PM2.5) over time is essential for evaluating the effectiveness of regulatory measures and informing future policy decisions. After the extreme haze events in China during 2013-14, more comprehensive and stringent policies were implemented to combat PM2.5 pollution. To determine the effectiveness of these policies, it is necessary to assess the changes in the specific source types to which the regulations pertain. Multiple studies have been conducted over the past decade to apportion PM2.5. The purpose of this study was to explore the available literature and conduct a critical review of the reliable results. In total, 5008 articles were screened, but only 48 studies were included for further analysis given our inclusion criteria including covering a monitoring period of ≥1 year and having enough speciation data to provide mass closure. Using these studies, we analyzed temporal and spatial trends across China from 2013 to 2019. We observed the overall decrease in the concentration contributions from all main source categories. The reductions from industry, coal and heavy oil combustion, and the related secondary sulfate were more notable, especially from 2013 to 2016-17. The contributions from biomass burning initially decreased but then increased slightly after 2016 in some locations despite new constraints on agricultural and household burning practices. Although the contributions from vehicle emissions and related secondary nitrate decreased, they gradually became the primary contributors to PM2.5 by ∼2017. Despite the substantial improvements achieved by the air pollution regulation implementations, further improvements in air quality will require additional aggressive actions, especially those targeting vehicular emissions. Ultimately, source apportionment studies based on extended duration, fixed-site sampling are recommended to provide a more thorough understanding of the sources impacting areas and transformations in PM2.5 sources prompted by regulatory actions.

Effects of coal mining and climate-environment factors on the evolution of a typical Eurasian grassland

Coal mining can significantly impact vegetation evolution, yet the limited information on its patterns and driving factors hampers efforts to mitigate these effects and reclaim abandoned mines. This study aimed to 1) examine vegetation evolution in a semiarid steppe watershed in northeast China; and 2) characterize the driving factors behind this evolution. We analyzed the impact of twelve selected driving factors on fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) from 2000 to 2021 using a dimidiate pixel model, Sen's slope analysis, Mann-Kendall trend test, coefficient of variation analysis, and Geodetector model. At a significance level of α = 0.05, our findings revealed a south-to-north decline pattern in FVC, a significant decrease trend in proximity to coal mines, and a notable increase trend adjacent to river channels. Approximately 37% of the watershed exhibited low FVC, while the overall temporal trend across the watershed was deemed insignificant. Areas surrounding the mines experienced a substantial reduction in FVC due to coal mining activities, while FVC variations across the watershed were linked to precipitation, temperature, and soil type. FVC predictions improved notably when interactions between multiple two-way factors were considered. Each driving factors displayed an optimal range (e.g., precipitation = 63-71 mm) for maximizing FVC. Given the study watershed's status as a national energy base, understanding vegetation responses to coal mining and climate-environment changes is crucial for sustaining fragile terrestrial ecosystems and socioeconomic development. Achieving a long-time balance between coal extraction and ecological protection is essential. The study outcomes hold significant promise for advancing ecological conservation, vegetation restoration, and mitigation of environmental degradation in semiarid regions affected by extensive coal mining and climate fluctuations. These findings contribute to the strategic management of such areas, promoting sustainable practices amidst evolving environmental challenges.

Improving Fine Particle Removal Using a Single-Channel Slit Bubbling Device in Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization System

To improve the cleanliness of coal-fired power plants' particulate matter emissions, a novel device (single-channel slit bubbling particle removal device (SCSB-PRD)) is proposed to improve the wet flue gas desulfurization system's (WFGDs) collaborative particle removal effect. Actual coal-fired flue gas was used to test the particle removal performance. The results showed that the flue gas temperature had no obvious effect on the scrubbing effect of the SCSB-PRD. The scrubbing space, scrubbing liquid volume, and flue gas flow rate effectively changed the gas-liquid flow state, and the bubbling state was the key factor in particle removal. The jet-bubbling contact state was more conducive to removing particles than the foam bubbling state. The jet-bubbling state improved the removal efficiency of fine particles by approximately 30% compared to the foam bubbling state. The device operated in a single stage, and the removal performance of the particulate matter reached more than 60%. Even the submicron particles had a satisfactory removal performance of greater than 50%. The particulate matter concentration at the outlet of the WFGDs was reduced to less than 10 mg/m3, which provides a feasible transformation path for ultraultra-low emissions of particulate matter from coal-fired power plants.

Environmental impacts of Indian coal thermal power plants and associated human health risk to the nearby residential communities: A potential review

Worldwide, harmful emissions from coal power plants cause many illnesses contribute to premature deaths burden. Despite its high impact on human health and being a major source of toxic pollutants, coal has been considered a component of global energy for decades. Hence, this work was envisaged to understand the rising environmental and multiple health issues from coal power plants. Studies on the adverse impacts of coal power plants on the environment, including soil, surface water, groundwater and air, were critically evaluated. The health risk from exposure to different pollutants and toxic metals released from the power plant was also demonstrated. The study also highlighted the government initiatives and policies regarding coal power operation and generation. Lastly, the study focused on guiding coal power plant owners and policymakers in identifying the essential cues for the risk assessment and management. The current study found an association between environmental and human health risks due to power generation, which needs intervention from the scientific and medical fields to jointly address public concerns. It is also suggested that future research should concentrate on exposure assessment techniques by integrating source-identification and geographic information systems to assess the health effects of different contaminants from power plants and to mitigate their adverse impact.

The dangerous link between coal dust exposure and DNA damage: unraveling the role of some of the chemical agents and oxidative stress

Exposure to coal mining dust poses a substantial health hazard to individuals due to the complex mixture of components released during the extraction process. This study aimed to assess the oxidative potential of residual coal mining dust on human lymphocyte DNA and telomeres and to perform a chemical characterization of coal dust and urine samples. The study included 150 individuals exposed to coal dust for over ten years, along with 120 control individuals. The results revealed significantly higher levels of DNA damage in the exposed group, as indicated by the standard comet assay, and oxidative damage, as determined by the FPG-modified comet assay. Moreover, the exposed individuals exhibited significantly shorter telomeres compared to the control group, and a significant correlation was found between telomere length and oxidative DNA damage. Using the PIXE method on urine samples, significantly higher concentrations of sodium (Na), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), chlorine (Cl), potassium (K), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and bromine (Br) were observed in the exposed group compared to the control group. Furthermore, men showed shorter telomeres, greater DNA damage, and higher concentrations of nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), and chromium (Cr) compared to exposed women. Additionally, the study characterized the particles released into the environment through GC-MS analysis, identifying several compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as fluoranthene, naphthalene, anthracene, 7H-benzo[c]fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, and some alkyl derivatives. These findings underscore the significant health risks associated with exposure to coal mining dust, emphasizing the importance of further research and the implementation of regulatory measures to safeguard the health of individuals in affected populations.

Characterization of lignite deposits of Barmer Basin, Rajasthan: insights from mineralogical and elemental analysis

The geochemistry of fly ash produced from the combustion of coal at thermal power plants presents a significant challenge for disposal and environmental impact due to its complex mineralogical and elemental composition. The objective of this study was to investigate the mineralogical and elemental distribution of thirty lignite samples from the Barmer Basin using advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). XRD analysis revealed the presence of minerals such as haematite (Fe2O3), nepheline, anhydrite, magnesite, andalusite, spinel and anatase. Other minor minerals included albite, siderite, periclase, calcite, mayenite, hauyne, pyrite, cristobalite, quartz, nosean and kaolinite. XRF analysis demonstrated that the most abundant elements in the Barmer Basin lignite ash were iron oxide (Fe2O3), sulphur oxide (SO3), calcium oxide (CaO), and quartz (SiO2) followed by minor traces of toxic oxides (SrO, V2O5, NiO, Cr2O3, Co2O3, CuO) that are known to have adverse effects on human health and the environment. The rare earth element (REE) composition showed higher concentrations of Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y and Sc at the Giral and lower concentrations at Sonari mine. The Barmer lignites recorded higher concentration of trace elements such as V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu and Sr while lower concentration of Rb, Cs, Ba, Pb, As, Th and U were observed within optimal range. The study findings revealed the predominant mineral concentration, elemental makeup, trace elements and rare earth elements associated with lignite reserves in the Barmer Basin.

Spatial distribution of selenium and other potentially toxic elements surrounding mountaintop coal mines in the Elk Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Despite the extensive use of mountaintop coal mining in the Elk Valley, British Columbia, Canada's largest metallurgical coal-producing region, little is known about the transport and deposition of fugitive dust emissions within its mountain landscape. This study aimed to assess the extent and spatial distribution of selenium and other potentially toxic elements (PTEs) near the town of Sparwood originating from fugitive dust emitted from two mountaintop coal mines. To achieve these objectives concentrations of 47 elements within moss tissues of Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium schreberi, and Ptilium crista-castrensis were analyzed from 19 locations between May 29 to June 1, 2022. Contamination factors were then calculated to identify areas of contamination, along with generalized additive models to assess the relationship between selenium and the mines. Finally, Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between selenium and other PTEs to determine which exhibited similar behaviour. This study found that selenium concentrations are a function of proximity to mountaintop mines, and the region's topographic features and prevailing wind patterns play a role in the transport and deposition of fugitive dust. Contamination is highest immediately surrounding mines and decreases at increasing distances, with the region's steep mountain ridges shielding the deposition of some fugitive dust when acting as a geographic barrier between adjacent valleys. Furthermore, silver, germanium, nickel, uranium, vanadium, and zirconium were identified as other PTEs of concern. The implications of this study are significant as it demonstrated the extent and spatial distribution of contaminants originating from fugitive dust emissions surrounding mountaintop mines and some of the controls to its distribution in mountain regions. As Canada and other mining jurisdictions look to expand critical mineral development, it will be important for proper risk assessment and mitigation in mountain regions to limit community and environmental exposure to contaminants within fugitive dust.

Long-Term Exposure to Fine Particulate Matter and Incidence of Esophageal Cancer: A Prospective Study of 0.5 Million Chinese Adults

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Evidence is sparse and inconclusive on the association between long-term fine (≤2.5 μm) particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and esophageal cancer. We aimed to assess the association of PM2.5 with esophageal cancer risk and compared the esophageal cancer risk attributable to PM2.5 exposure and other established risk factors.

METHODS

This study included 510,125 participants without esophageal cancer at baseline from China Kadoorie Biobank. A high-resolution (1 × 1 km) satellite-based model was used to estimate PM2.5 exposure during the study period. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% CIs of PM2.5 with esophageal cancer incidence were estimated using Cox proportional hazard model. Population attributable fractions for PM2.5 and other established risk factors were estimated.

RESULTS

There was a linear concentration-response relationship between long-term PM2.5 exposure and esophageal cancer. For each 10-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, the HR was 1.16 (95% CI, 1.04-1.30) for esophageal cancer incidence. Compared with the first quarter of PM2.5 exposure, participants in the highest quarter had a 1.32-fold higher risk for esophageal cancer, with an HR of 1.32 (95% CI, 1.01-1.72). The population attributable risk because of annual average PM2.5 concentration ≥35 μg/m3 was 23.3% (95% CI, 6.6%-40.0%), higher than the risks attributable to lifestyle risk factors.

CONCLUSIONS

This large prospective cohort study of Chinese adults found that long-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with an elevated risk of esophageal cancer. With stringent air pollution mitigation measures in China, a large reduction in the esophageal cancer disease burden can be expected.

Exposure to coal mining can lead to imbalanced levels of inorganic elements and DNA damage in individuals living near open-pit mining sites

Coal mining activities are considered harmful to living organisms. These activities release compounds to the environment, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, and oxides, which can cause oxidative damage to DNA. In this study, we compared the DNA damage and the chemical composition of peripherical blood of 150 individuals exposed to coal mining residues and 120 non-exposed individuals. Analysis of coal particles revealed the presence of elements such as copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), chrome (Cr), silicon (Si) and iron (Fe). The exposed individuals in our study had significant concentrations of Al, sulfur (S), Cr, Fe, and Cu in their blood, as well as hypokalemia. Results from the enzyme-modified comet assay (FPG enzyme) suggest that exposure to coal mining residues caused oxidative DNA damage, particularly purine damage. Furthermore, particles with a diameter of <2.5 μm indicate that direct inhalation could promote these physiological alterations. Finally, a systems biology analysis was performed to investigate the effects of these elements on DNA damage and oxidative stress pathways. Interestingly, Cu, Cr, Fe, and K are key nodes that intensely modulate these pathways. Our results suggest that understanding the imbalance of inorganic elements caused by exposure to coal mining residues is crucial to understanding their effect on human health.

Environmental Justice: Where It Has Been, and Where It Might Be Going

Taking stock of environmental justice (EJ) is daunting. It is at once a scholarly field, an ongoing social movement, and an administrative imperative adopted by government agencies and incorporated into legislation. Moreover, within academia, it is multidisciplinary and multimethodological, comprising scholars who do not always speak to one another. Any review of EJ is thus necessarily restrictive. This article explores several facets of EJ activism. One is its coalitional and "inside-outside" orientation. EJ activists are constantly forming alliances with other stakeholders, but these coalitions do not flout the importance of engaging with formal institutions. The review next turns to one set of such institutions-the courts and regulatory agencies-to see how well EJ claims have fared there. I then survey scientific findings that have been influenced by EJ. The review concludes with future directions for activists and scholars to consider: the changing nature of EJ coalitions, fragmentation within EJ and with other fields, the historical roots of environmental injustice, and opportunities for stronger infusion of the EJ lens.

Analysis of the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in a population chronically exposed to coal mining residues

During coal mining activities, many compounds are released into the environment that can negatively impact human health. Particulate matter, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, and oxides are part of the complex mixture that can affect nearby populations. Therefore, we designed this study to evaluate the potential cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in individuals chronically exposed to coal residues from peripheral blood lymphocytes and buccal cells. We recruited 150 individuals who lived more than 20 years in La Loma-Colombia and 120 control individuals from the city of Barranquilla without a history of exposure to coal mining. In the cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome (CBMN-Cyt) assay, significant differences in the frequency of micronucleus (MN), nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB), nuclear bud (NBUD), and apoptotic cells (APOP) were observed between the two groups. In the buccal micronucleus cytome (BM-Cyt) assay, a significant formation of NBUD, karyorrhexis (KRX), karyolysis (KRL), condensed chromatin (CC), and binucleated (BN) cells was observed in the exposed group. Considering the characteristics of the study group, a significant correlation for CBMN-Cyt was found between NBUD and vitamin consumption, between MN or APOP and meat consumption, and between MN and age. Moreover, a significant correlation for BM-Cyt was found between KRL and vitamin consumption or age, and BN versus alcohol consumption. Using Raman spectroscopy, a significant increase in the concentration of DNA/RNA bases, creatinine, polysaccharides, and fatty acids was detected in the urine of individuals exposed to coal mining compared to the control group. These results contribute to the discussion on the effects of coal mining on nearby populations and the development of diseases due to chronic exposure to these residues.

Private and External Costs and Benefits of Replacing High-Emitting Peaker Plants with Batteries

Falling costs of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have made them attractive for grid-scale energy storage applications. Energy storage will become increasingly important as intermittent renewable generation and more frequent extreme weather events put stress on the electricity grid. Environmental groups across the United States are advocating for the replacement of the highest-emitting power plants, which run only at times of peak demand, with Li-ion battery systems. We analyze the life-cycle cost, climate, and human health impacts of replacing the 19 highest-emitting peaker plants in California with Li-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS). Our results show that designing Li-ion BESS to replace peaker plants puts them at an economic disadvantage, even if facilities are only sized to meet 95% of the original plants' load events and are free to engage in arbitrage. However, five of 19 potential replacements do achieve a positive net present value after including monetized climate and human health impacts. These BESS cycle far less than typical front-of-the-meter batteries and rely on the frequency regulation market for most of their revenue. All projects offer net air pollution benefits but increase net greenhouse gas emissions due to electricity demand during charging and upstream emissions from battery manufacturing.

Possible Sources of Trace Metals in Obese Females Living in Informal Settlements near Industrial Sites around Gauteng, South Africa

Trace metals have been reported in the literature to be associated with obesity. Exposure to some trace metals such as Mn, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb may pose a serious health risk to individuals living around a polluted environment. The present study assessed the levels of trace metals in the blood of obese females living around industrial areas in Gauteng, South Africa. The study was carried out using a mixed method approach. Only females with a BMI ≥ 30.0 were considered. A total of 120 obese females participated in the study (site 1: 40-industrial area, site 2: 40-industrial area, and site 3: 40-residential area), aged 18-45 and not in menopause. Blood samples were analysed for trace metals content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The mean concentrations of trace metals were in the order Pb > Mn > Cr > Co > As > Cd (site 1), Pb > Mn > Co > As > Cd (site 2), and Mn > Cr > Co > As > Pb > Cd (site 3). The blood Mn from site 1 ranged from 6.79 µg/L-33.99 µg/L, and the mean differences obtained from the participants from different sites were significant (p < 0.01). The blood levels of Mn, Pb, Cr, Co, As, and Cd were above the recommended limits set by the WHO in some of the participants. The present study noted, among others, closeness to industrial areas, lifestyle decisions such as the use of tobacco products by their partners indoors, and the method used for cooking as factors that might have accounted for the blood levels of Mn, Pb, Cd and Co. The study showed that there is a need for constant monitoring of the levels of trace metals in the blood of those living in these areas.

Association between solid fuel use and nonfatal cardiovascular disease among middle-aged and older adults: Findings from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS)

BACKGROUND

Few studies have been conducted on the association between domestic solid fuel combustion and incident nonfatal cardiovascular disease (CVD). We assessed the prospective association between domestic fuel type and incident nonfatal CVD among Chinese adults aged ≥45 years.

METHODS

This was a prospective cohort study using data from the China Longitudinal Study of Health and Retirement (CHARLS) that recruited 8803 participants ≥45 years in 2013. Household fuel types were assessed based on self-reports, including solid fuel (coal, crop residue, or wood fuel) and clean fuel (central heating, solar power, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, electricity, or marsh gas). Nonfatal CVD was defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed nonfatal CVD. We established Cox proportional hazard regression models with age as the time scale and strata by sex to evaluate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs).

RESULTS

After a median follow-up of five years, 970 (11.02 %) nonfatal CVD cases were documented, including 423 (9.96 %) in males and 547 (12.01 %) in females. Participants with exposure to solid fuel for cooking and clean fuel for heating [HR (95 % CI):2.01 (1.36-2.96)], solid fuel for heating and clean fuel for cooking [HR (95 % CI):1.45 (1.06-1.99)], and solid fuel for both heating and cooking [HR (95 % CI):1.43 (1.07-1.92)] had an elevated nonfatal CVD risk compared to users of cleaner fuel for both cooking and heating. Those whom self-reported switching from solid fuels to cleaner fuels for cooking had significantly decreased nonfatal CVD risk [HR (95 % CI):0.76 (0.58-0.99)] than participants who did not switch to cleaner fuels.

CONCLUSIONS

Exposure to domestic solid fuel burning for cooking or heating is associated with an elevated nonfatal CVD risk. Notably, switching cooking fuels from solid to cleaner fuels is related to a reduced risk of nonfatal CVD.

Association between Household Solid Fuel Use and Sarcopenia Risk among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study

BACKGROUNDS

Household solid fuel have been associated with changes of handgrip strength, and exposure to ambient air pollution might be one risk factor of sarcopenia. However, the prospective association between household solid fuel use and sarcopenia remains limited.

METHODS

A total of 11,924 participants (5,723 men (48%) and 6,201 women (52%) with the average age was 59.17 ± 9.57 years) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011 were included in cross-sectional analyses. 7,507 participants at baseline were included in longitudinal analyses and were followed up in 2015. Sarcopenia status was defined according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019) criteria.

RESULTS

In cross-sectional analyses, the participants who used solid fuel for cooking and heating had higher prevalence of sarcopenia than those who used clean fuel. During the follow-up, 302 (4.02%) participants experienced sarcopenia. In the longitudinal analysis, after multivariable adjustment of age, sex and other risk factors, individuals who used solid fuel for cooking had an elevated risk of new-onset sarcopenia, with corresponding odds ratio of 1.32 (95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.71). Consistently, individuals reported solid fuels use for heating were associated with 20% (odds ratio=1.20, 95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.56) increased risk of sarcopenia. In addition, a self-reported switch from clean to solid fuel for cooking appeared to have an increased sarcopenia risk (odds ratio=1.20, 95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.43).

CONCLUSION

Using household solid fuel for cooking and heating was associated with increased risk of sarcopenia prevalence and incidence.

Exposure to coal ash and depression in children aged 6-14 years old

BACKGROUND

When coal is burned for energy, coal ash, a hazardous waste product, is generated. Throughout the world, over 1 billion tons of coal ash is produced yearly. In the United States, over 78 million tons of coal ash was produced in 2019. Fly ash, the main component of coal ash contains neurotoxic metal (loid)s that may affect children's neurodevelopment and mental health. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between fly ash and depressive problems in children aged 6-14 years old.

METHODS

Children and their parents/guardians were recruited from 2015 to 2020. Tobit regression and logistic regression were used to assess the association between coal fly ash and depressive problems. To determine fly ash presence, Scanning Electron Microscopy was conducted on polycarbonate filters containing PM10 from the homes of the study participants. Depressive problems in children were measured using the Depressive Problems DSM and withdrawn/depressed syndromic problem scales of the Child Behavior Checklist.

RESULTS

In covariate-adjusted Tobit regression models, children with fly ash on the filter had higher scores on the DSM Depressive Problems (3.13 points; 95% CI = 0.39, 5.88) compared with children who did not have fly ash on the filter. Logistic regression supported these findings.

CONCLUSION

Coal ash is one of the largest waste streams in the U.S, but it is not classified as a hazardous waste by the Environmental Protection Agency. To our knowledge, no studies have assessed the impact of coal ash on children's mental health. This study highlights the need for further research into the effects of coal ash exposure on children's mental health, and improved regulations on release and storage of coal ash.

Maternal proximity to mountain-top removal mining and birth defects in Appalachian Kentucky, 1997–2003

Extraction of coal through mountaintop removal mining (MTR) alters many dimensions of the landscape. Explosive blasts, exposed rock, and coal washing have the potential to pollute air and water. Previous research suggests that infants born to mothers living in areas with MTR have a higher prevalence of birth defects. In this cross-sectional study, we further examine the relationship between MTR activity and several types of birth defects. Maternal exposure to MTR was assessed using remote sensing data from Skytruth, which captures MTR activity in the Central Appalachian region of the United States. Active MTR area was quantified within a five-kilometer buffer surrounding geocoded maternal address captured on birth records for live births to Appalachian Kentucky mothers between 1997 and 2003 (N = 95,581). We assigned high, medium, and low exposure based on the tertile of total MTR area within 5-km, and births with no MTR within this buffer were assigned zero exposure. The presence or absence of a birth defect grouped into six major organ systems was identified using birth records alone. Finally, we applied conditional multiple imputation for variables with missing values before conducting separate multivariable log-binomial regression models for each birth defect group. Prevalence ratio (PR) estimates were adjusted for individual level covariates from birth records. The prevalence of gastro-intestinal defects was significantly higher in birth records with high and low active MTR exposure compared to records with no exposure. (High exposure: PR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.14–3.47; low exposure PR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.06–3.31). This study supports some of the existing findings of previous ecological studies. Research addressing the relationship between gastro-intestinal birth defects and MTR coal mining is warranted but should carefully consider temporal dimensions of exposure.

Study on the Spatial and Temporal Distribution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Particulate Matter Pollution in Coal Production Cities in China

In recent years, with the continuous advancement of China's urbanization process, regional atmospheric environmental problems have become increasingly prominent. We selected 12 cities as study areas to explore the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of atmospheric particulate matter in the region, and analyzed the impact of socioeconomic and natural factors on local particulate matter levels. In terms of time variation, the particulate matter in the study area showed an annual change trend of first rising and then falling, a monthly change trend of "U" shape, and an hourly change trend of double-peak and double-valley distribution. Spatially, the concentration of particulate matter in the central and southern cities of the study area is higher, while the pollution in the western region is lighter. In terms of social economy, PM_2.5 showed an "inverted U-shaped" quadratic polynomial relationship with Second Industry and Population Density, while it showed a U-shaped relationship with Generating Capacity and Coal Output. The results of correlation analysis showed that PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ were significantly positively correlated with NO₂, SO₂, CO and air pressure, and significantly negatively correlated with O₃ and air temperature. Wind speed was significantly negatively correlated with PM_2.5, and significantly positively correlated with PM₁₀. In terms of pollution transmission, the southwest area of Taiyuan City is a high potential pollution source area of fine particles, and the long-distance transport of PM_2.5 in Xinjiang from the northwest also has a certain contribution to the pollution of fine particles. This study is helpful for us to understand the characteristics and influencing factors of particulate matter pollution in coal production cities.

The Health Impact of Household Cooking Fuel Choice on Women: Evidence from China

In order to achieve sustainable development, the world is experiencing a profound energy transition from traditional biomass through fossil fuel to clean and renewable energy. As women are the primary undertakers of cooking in developing countries, they are more vulnerable to household air pollution caused by solid fuel combustion. Although women can benefit from clean fuel switching for household cooking, its influence on women’s health is still not well understood. Using the longitudinal data from China Family Panel Studies in 2014 and 2018, this study adopts panel data models to investigate the impact of household cooking fuel choice on women’s health from multiple dimensions in China, including self-rated health, others-rated health, and instrumental activities of daily living, aiming at shedding light on energy transition and health improvement for developing countries. It is found that household cooking fuel switching from solid fuel to clean fuel improves women’s self-rated and others-rated health but has no significant impact on women’s abilities of independence in daily activities. Specifically, each level of household cooking fuel increases respondents’ self-rated and others-rated health by 0.009 and 0.043, respectively. Moreover, further investigation of the impact of household cooking fuel switching on the health status of women from different groups found: (1) the health effect of clean cooking fuel switching on women aged 46 and above is more significant than that on women aged 45 and below, (2) there are significant differences between urban and rural areas in the impact of household cooking fuel switching on women’s health, and (3) uneducated women benefit more than educated women from clean cooking fuel switching. Finally, this study provides some policy implications to promote the energy transition and improve women’s health in China and other developing countries.

Tracking progress on health and climate change in Europe

Left unabated, climate change will have catastrophic effects on the health of present and future generations. Such effects are already seen in Europe, through more frequent and severe extreme weather events, alterations to water and food systems, and changes in the environmental suitability for infectious diseases. As one of the largest current and historical contributors to greenhouse gases and the largest provider of financing for climate change mitigation and adaptation, Europe's response is crucial, for both human health and the planet. To ensure that health and wellbeing are protected in this response it is essential to build the capacity to understand, monitor, and quantify health impacts of climate change and the health co-benefits of accelerated action. Responding to this need, the Lancet Countdown in Europe is established as a transdisciplinary research collaboration for monitoring progress on health and climate change in Europe. With the wealth of data and academic expertise available in Europe, the collaboration will develop region-specific indicators to address the main challenges and opportunities of Europe's response to climate change for health. The indicators produced by the collaboration will provide information to health and climate policy decision making, and will also contribute to the European Observatory on Climate and Health.

Health impacts of indoor air pollution from household solid fuel on children and women

The inefficient and incomplete combustion of solid fuel (SF) is associated with high levels of indoor air pollutants leading to 3.55 million deaths annually. The risk is higher in women and children, due to their higher exposure duration and unique physical properties. The current article aims to provide a critical overview regarding the use of solid fuel, its associated pollutants, their toxicity mechanisms and, most importantly the associated health impacts, especially in women and children. Pollutants associated with SF mostly include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, particulate matter, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide, and their concentrations are two- to threefold higher in indoor environments. These pollutants can lead to a variety of health risks by inducing different toxicity mechanisms, such as oxidative stress, DNA methylation, and gene activation. Exposed children have an increased prevalence of low birth weight, acute lower respiratory tract infections, anemia and premature mortality. On the other hand, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular diseases are the major causes of disability and premature death in women. Indoor air pollution resulting from SF combustion is a major public health threat globally. To reduce the risks, it is important to identify future research gaps and implement effective interventions and policies.

Sex difference in the association between solid fuel use and cognitive function in rural China

BACKGROUND

Whether indoor air pollution from solid fuel use is associated with cognitive function remains unclear.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to examine the association of solid fuel use with the risk of cognitive impairment in males and females.

METHODS

The data was from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Self-reported heating and cooking fuel were categorized as clean fuel (solar, liquefied gas, natural gas, or electricity) and solid fuel (coal, biomass charcoal, wood, or straw). Cognitive function, including orientation and attention, episodic memory, and visuospatial abilities, was assessed using standardized questionnaires.

RESULTS

A total of 7824 individuals were included in our study (aged 57.0 ± 9.3, 46.2% female), with 47.0% and 76.0% used solid fuel for cooking and heating, respectively. There was an interaction between sex and solid fuel use for cooking (P=0.008) for the progress of cognitive impairment. Solid fuel use for cooking was associated with a larger decrease in cognitive function score in females (β=-0.832; 95% CI: -1.043, -0.622; P < 0.001) than in males (β=-0.487; 95% CI: -0.671, -0.302; P < 0.001). The sex difference remained with further adjustment of covariates (β=-0.321; 95% CI: -0.503, -0.138; P=0.001 for males; β=-0.534; 95% CI: -0.745, -0.324; P < 0.001 for females). For heating, the interaction between sex and solid fuel was not statistically significant (P=0.156). After controlling for the covariates, solid fuel use for heating was inversely associated with a 0.321 unit of decrease of cognitive function score (β=-0.321; 95% CI: -0.652, 0.009; P=0.057) in males, and a 0.598 unit of decrease of cognitive function (β=-0.598; 95% CI: -0.978, -0.218; P=0.002) in females.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, solid fuel use for cooking and heating was significantly associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment. Furthermore, for the first time, we found that the effect of solid fuel use on cognitive function in females was greater than in males.

Physico-chemical properties and reactive oxygen species generation by respirable coal dust: Implication for human health risk assessment

This study investigates the mineralogy, micro-morphology, chemical characteristics and oxidation toxicity of respirable dusts generated in underground coal mines. The active sampling was applied to collect airborne particulates with aerodynamic diameter <4 µm (PM₄) at depth greater than 500 m from earth surface. The average mass concentration of PM₄ was extremely higher than recommended values. QXRD and FESEM-EDS analyses were applied to study the micro-mineralogy and micro-morphology of respirable dusts. The chemical analysis by ICP-MS revealed an enrichment of V, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd and Sb in respirable dust compared with the background environment and world coals. The EPA's health risk model showed that the health risk posed by Cr and Co in all workplaces exceeded the acceptable risk value for human health. The synthetic respiratory tract lining fluid (RTLF) model was utilized to achieve a novel insight into the toxicity of respirable coal dust. The result showed an overall depletion of lung surface antioxidants with the decreasing trend of ascorbic acid > reduced glutathione >> urate, implying low- to medium level of oxidative stress. The result of this study can be applied globally by decision-makers to decrease hazardous exposure of mine workers to respirable dust.

Proposed Cleaning Potential Gradient Based on a Study of Coals from Three Exploration Areas in Shanxi Province, China

The cleaning potential of selected Chinese bituminous coals during coal preparation was evaluated in terms of coal quality, cleaning grade, and cleanability. The cleaning potentials were determined for coals sampled from a total of six seams, two each in three different general exploration areas in southern Shanxi, China. Distribution maps of resources with different cleaning potential characteristics were prepared using mapping and geographical information software. In each case, the area and calculated reserves for coals having different classifications of cleaning potentials were determined. The total areal extent of the six coals studied is about 410 million m², and the total reserves of these coals amount to about 1460 million tonnes, which include coals of poor, fair, good, and proficient cleanabilities. The proportion of high-quality coals is about 28.9%. Coals that can be processed into high-quality coals account for about 69.2%. A cleaning potential gradient is proposed for indicating the cleaning potential level, and an equation for calculating it is established. The necessity of processing raw coal of good quality is also to be considered in terms of economics. It does not make economic sense to process coal with an organic sulfur content more than 1.5%, even though it may have a good cleanability.

Maternal residency in Central Appalachia counties with coal production has been previously associated with increased rates of low birth weight (LBW). To refine the relationship between surface mining and birth outcomes, this study employs finer spatiotemporal estimates of exposure.

Solid fuel use for heating and risks of breast and cervical cancer mortality in China

BACKGROUND

Carcinogens released from indoor burning of solid fuels are believed to enter the bloodstream and to be metabolized in breast and cervical tissues. Little evidence exists about the relationship of solid fuel use from heating with breast and cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVES

To examine the association of solid heating fuel use with breast and cervical cancer mortality.

METHODS

This study included female participants aged 30-79 years who were enrolled in the China Kadoorie Biobank during 2004-2008 from 10 diverse regions across China. During a 10.2-year median follow-up, 177 breast cancer deaths and 113 cervical cancer deaths were documented. Multivariable Cox regression models yielded adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for the associations of self-reported long-term heating fuel exposure with two cancer deaths. Stratified analyses were used to assess effect modification.

RESULTS

We included 236,116 participants for breast cancer analyses and 228,795 for cervical cancer analyses. Compared with non-solid fuel use, the fully adjusted HRs of cervical cancer deaths were 1.75 (0.91-3.38) for wood use, 2.23 (1.09-4.59) for mixed fuel (coal and wood) use. No evident relationship was observed for breast cancer deaths. Cervical cancer risk increased with the duration of solid fuel use (P for trend = 0.041). Elevated cervical cancer risk was observed in post-menopausal women (HR 2.01, 1.01-4.03), not in pre-menopausal women (HR 0.77, 0.56-2.31) (P for heterogeneity = 0.004); and in those aged ≥50 years (HR 2.56, 1.17-5.86), not in those aged < 50 years (HR 0.69, 0.26-1.84) (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Indoor solid fuel combustion for heating may be associated with a higher risk for cervical cancer death, but not for breast cancer. The strength of the association increased with the duration of exposure and was modified by age and menopause status.
