Geopolymer concrete containing nanomaterials-a step toward sustainable construction

Geopolymer concrete (GPC) utilizes industrial wastes such as fly ash, bottom, ash, and slag instead of conventional Portland cement as the primary binder, and thus promote a sustainable solution for bulk concrete works. Nanomaterials (NMs) have often been linked with developing these sustainable high-strength mixes. Furthermore, NMs have been proven to imbibe enhanced physio-mechanical properties, often eliminating the need for thermal curing. This not only reduces total energy demand for concrete production but also offers enhanced durability due to denser inter-particle packing of the mix. This review meticulously summarizes the performance of GPCs dosed with different types of NMs including nano-silica (NS), nano-alumina (NA), nano-titanium di oxide (NT), nano-clay (NC), nano-graphene oxide (NG), and carbon nanotubes (CNT). The reported findings of previous studies were carefully studied and compiled in a systematic manner in terms of physio-mechanical, durability, and microstructural properties. It was observed that addition of NM, in general, leads to a slight reduction in the mix's workability; however, the same can be counteracted by use of suitable superplasticizers. Furthermore, inclusion of NMs in GPC offers the distinct advantage of high density and impermeability, resulting in enhanced mechanical and durability characteristics. Two distinct multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques were employed in this study to statistically analyze the most preferred NM for GPC. It was found that addition of NS (2%) yields the most desirable outcomes. Finally, limitations and challenges associated with production of NM dosed GPC along with scopes for future works are presented toward the end of this review.

Recent Advances in Bioactive Carbon Nanotubes Based on Polymer Composites for Biosensor Applications

Recent breakthroughs in the field of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have opened up unprecedented opportunities for the development of specialized bioactive CNT-polymers for a variety of biosensor applications. The incorporation of bioactive materials, including DNA, aptamers and antibodies, into CNTs to produce composites of bioactive CNTs has attracted considerable attention. In addition, polymers are essential for the development of biosensors as they provide biocompatible conditions and are the ideal matrix for the immobilization of proteins. The numerous applications of bioactive compounds combined with the excellent chemical and physical properties of CNTs have led to the development of bioactive CNT-polymer composites. This article provides a comprehensive overview of CNT-polymer composites and new approaches to encapsulate bioactive compounds and polymers in CNTs. Finally, biosensor applications of bioactive CNT-polymer for the detection of glucose, H2O2 and cholesterol were investigated. The surface of CNT-polymer facilitates the immobilization of bioactive molecules such as DNA, enzymes or antibodies, which in turn enables the construction of state-of-the-art, future-oriented biosensors.

Aerosol-Synthesized Surfactant-Free Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Based NO2 Sensors: Unprecedentedly High Sensitivity and Fast Recovery

This study pioneers a chemical sensor based on surfactant-free aerosol-synthesized single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films for detecting nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Unlike conventional CNTs, the SWCNTs used in this study exhibit one of the highest surface-to-volume ratios. They show minimal bundling without the need for surfactants and have the lowest number of defects among reported CNTs. Furthermore, the dry-transferrable and facile one-step lamination results in promising industrial viability. When applied to devices, the sensor shows excellent sensitivity (41.6% at 500 ppb), rapid response/recovery time (14.2/120.8 s), a remarkably low limit of detection (below ≈0.161 ppb), minimal noise, repeatability for more than 50 cycles without fluctuation, and long-term stability for longer than 6 months. This is the best performance reported for a pure CNT-based sensor. In addition, the aerosol SWCNTs demonstrate consistent gas-sensing performance even after 5000 bending cycles, indicating their suitability for wearable applications. Based on experimental and theoretical analyses, the proposed aerosol CNTs are expected to overcome the limitations associated with conventional CNT-based sensors, thereby offering a promising avenue for various sensor applications.

Carbon Nanomaterial Fluorescent Probes and Their Biological Applications

Fluorescent carbon nanomaterials have broadly useful chemical and photophysical attributes that are conducive to applications in biology. In this review, we focus on materials whose photophysics allow for the use of these materials in biomedical and environmental applications, with emphasis on imaging, biosensing, and cargo delivery. The review focuses primarily on graphitic carbon nanomaterials including graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, as well as carbon dots and carbon nanohoops. Recent advances in and future prospects of these fields are discussed at depth, and where appropriate, references to reviews pertaining to older literature are provided.

A comprehensive review of various carbonaceous materials for anodes in lithium-ion batteries

With the advent of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the selection and application of electrode materials have been the subject of much discussion and study. Among them, graphite has been widely investigated for use as electrode materials in LIBs due to its abundant resources, low cost, safety and electrochemical diversity. While it is commonly recognized that conventional graphite materials utilized for commercial purposes have a limited theoretical capacity, there has been a steady emergence of new and improved carbonaceous materials for use as anodes in light of the progressive development of LIBs. In this paper, the latest research progress of various carbon materials in LIBs is systematically and comprehensively reviewed. Firstly, the rocking chair charging and discharging mechanism of LIBs is briefly introduced in this paper, using graphite anodes as an example. After that, the general categories of carbonaceous materials are highlighted, and the recent research on the recent progress of various carbonaceous materials (graphite-based, amorphous carbon-based, and nanocarbon-based) used in LIB anodes is presented separately based on the classification of the structural morphology, emphasizing the influence of the morphology and structure of carbon-based materials on the electrochemical performance of the batteries. Finally, the current challenges of carbonaceous materials in LIB applications and the future development of other novel carbonaceous materials are envisioned.

Stereoselective synthesis of (R)-(+)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine by ω-amine transaminase immobilized on amino modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes and biocatalyst recycling

Immobilized enzymes exhibit favorable advantages in biocatalysis, such as high operation stability, feasible reusability, and improved organic solvents tolerance. Herein, an immobilized ω-amine transaminase AtATA@MWCNTs-NH2 is successfully prepared using amino modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes as carrier and glutaraldehyde as crosslinker. Under the optimum immobilization conditions, the activity recovery is 78.7%. Compared with purified enzyme AtATA, AtATA@MWCNTs-NH2 possesses superior stability, even in harsh conditions (e.g., high temperature, acidic or alkali environment, and different kind of organic solvents). To simplify the separation and extraction of products, we choose methanol (10%, v/v) as the cosolvent, replacing DMSO (20%, v/v) in our previous work, for the catalytic reaction of AtATA@MWCNTs-NH2. AtATA@MWCNTs-NH2 can be used for stereoselective synthesis (R)-(+)- 1(1-naphthyl)ethylamine ((R)-NEA) for 15 cycles, with the e.e.p (enantiomeric excess) > 99.5%. The catalytic process of AtATA@MWCNTs-NH2 achieves cycle production of (R)-NEA using methanol as cosolvent.

Carbon-Based Nanostructures as Emerging Materials for Gene Delivery Applications

Gene therapeutics are promising for treating diseases at the genetic level, with some already validated for clinical use. Recently, nanostructures have emerged for the targeted delivery of genetic material. Nanomaterials, exhibiting advantageous properties such as a high surface-to-volume ratio, biocompatibility, facile functionalization, substantial loading capacity, and tunable physicochemical characteristics, are recognized as non-viral vectors in gene therapy applications. Despite progress, current non-viral vectors exhibit notably low gene delivery efficiency. Progress in nanotechnology is essential to overcome extracellular and intracellular barriers in gene delivery. Specific nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs), nanodiamonds (NDs), and similar carbon-based structures can accommodate diverse genetic materials such as plasmid DNA (pDNA), messenger RNA (mRNA), small interference RNA (siRNA), micro RNA (miRNA), and antisense oligonucleotides (AONs). To address challenges such as high toxicity and low transfection efficiency, advancements in the features of carbon-based nanostructures (CBNs) are imperative. This overview delves into three types of CBNs employed as vectors in drug/gene delivery systems, encompassing their synthesis methods, properties, and biomedical applications. Ultimately, we present insights into the opportunities and challenges within the captivating realm of gene delivery using CBNs.

Utilization of carbon-based nanomaterials for wastewater treatment and biogas enhancement: A state-of-the-art review

The management of environmental pollution and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a challenge that has spurred increased research interest in determining sustainable alternatives to decrease biowaste. This state-of-the-art review aimed to describe the preparation and utilization of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNM) for biogas enhancement and wastewater contaminant (dyes, color, and dust particles) removal. The novelty of this review is that we elucidated that the performance of CNMs in the anaerobic digestion (AD) varies from one system to another. In addition, this review revealed that increasing the pyrolysis temperature can facilitate the transition from one CNM type to another and outlined the methods that can be used to develop CNMs, including arc discharge, chemical exfoliation, and laser ablation. In addition, this study showed that methane (CH4) yield can be slightly increased (e.g. from 33.6% to 60.89%) depending on certain CNM factors, including its type, concentration, and feedstock. Temperature is a fundamental factor involved in the method and carbon sources used for CNM synthesis. This review determined that graphene oxide is not a good additive for biogas and CH4 yield improvement compared with other types of CNM, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. The efficacy of CNMs in wastewater treatment depends on the temperature and pH of the solution. Therefore, CNMs are good adsorbents for wastewater contaminant removal and are a promising alternative for CO2 emissions reduction. Further research is necessary to determine the relationship between CNM synthesis and preparation costs while accounting for other factors such as gas flow, feedstock, consumption time, and energy consumption.

Applications and implications of carbon nanotubes for the sequestration of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater

The rapid growth in the population, industrial developments, and climate change over the century have contributed to a significant rise in aquatic pollution leading to a scarcity of clean, reliable, and sustainable water sources and supply. Exposure through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption of organic/inorganic compounds such as heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) discharged from municipalities, hospitals, textile industries, food, and agricultural sectors has caused adverse health outcomes in aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Owing to the high surface area, photocatalytic activity, antimicrobial, antifouling, optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, the application of nanotechnology offers unique opportunities in advanced wastewater management strategies over traditional approaches. Carbon nanomaterials and associated composites such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and carbon nanotubes (CNT) buckypaper membranes have demonstrated efficiency in adsorption, photocatalytic activity, and filtration of contaminants and thus show immense potentiality in wastewater management. This review focuses on the application of CNTs in the sequestration of organic and inorganic contaminants from the aquatic environment. It also sheds light on the aquatic pollutant desorption processes, current safety regulations, and toxic responses associated with CNTs. Critical knowledge gaps involving CNT synthesis, surface modification processes, CNT-environment interactions, and risk assessments are further identified and discussed.

Structural and functional perspectives of carbon filter media in constructed wetlands for pollutants abatement from wastewater

Constructed wetlands (CWs) represent the most viable artificial wastewater treatment system that works on the principles of natural wetlands. Filter media are integrally linked to CWs and have substantial impacts on their performance for pollutant removal. Carbon-derived substrates have been in the spotlight for decades due to their abundance, sustainability, reusability, and potential to treat complex contaminants. However, the efficiency and feasibility of carbon substrates have not been fully explored, and there are only a few studies that have rigorously analyzed their performance for wastewater treatment. This critical synthesis of the literature review offers comprehensive insights into the utilization of carbon-derived substrates in the context of pollutant removal, intending to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of CWs. It also compares several carbon-based substrates with non-carbon substrates with respect to physiochemical properties, pollutant removal efficiency, and cost-benefit analysis. Furthermore, it addresses the concerns and possible remedies about carbon filtration materials such as configuration, clogging minimization, modification, and reusability to improve the efficacy of substrates and CWs. Recommendations made to address these challenges include pretreatment of wastewater, use of a substrate with smaller pore size, incorporation of multiple filter media, the introduction of earthworms, and cultivation of plants. A current scientific scenario has been presented for identifying the research gaps to investigate the functional mechanisms of modified carbon substrates and their interaction with other CW components.

Electrophoretic Deposition of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Coatings on CoCrMo Alloy for Biomedical Applications

Carbon nanotubes are a promising material for use in innovative biomedical solutions due to their unique chemical, mechanical, electrical, and magnetic properties. This work provides a method for the development of ultrasonically assisted electrophoretic deposition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on a CoCrMo dental alloy. Functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes was carried out by chemical oxidation in a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids. The modified and unmodified multi-walled carbon nanotubes were anaphoretically deposited on the CoCrMo alloy in an aqueous solution. Chemical composition was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The mechanism and kinetics of the electrochemical corrosion of the obtained coatings in artificial saliva at 37 °C were determined using the open-circuit potential method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and anodic polarization curves. The capacitive behavior and high corrosion resistance of the tested electrodes were revealed. It was found that the kinetics of electrochemical corrosion of the CoCrMo electrode significantly decreased in the presence of the functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube coating. Electrophoretic deposition was shown to be an effective, low-cost, and fast method of producing nanotubes with controlled thickness, homogeneity, and packing density.

4',7-dihydroxyflavone conjugated carbon nanotube formulation demonstrates improved efficacy against Leishmania parasite

One of the global problems of rising concern is the spread of the neglected tropical disease, leishmaniasis. There are several drugs used for the treatment of the disease but the repertoire of drugs has drawbacks like toxicity and low therapeutic value. Considering the need for new drugs, we studied the synthesis of 4',7-dihydroxyflavone conjugated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (47DHF-MWCNTs) and evaluated their anti-leishmanial activity against Leishmania donovani. The compound 47DHF was conjugated to the acid oxidized MWCTNs by Steglich esterification. The synthesized 47DHF-MWCNTs were characterized by UV spectroscopy, and, from the zeta value of 35 mV, they were found to be stable. 47DHF-MWCNTs possessed 84% drug loading efficiency and 63% cumulative drug release at intra-macrophage pH of 5.8. Moreover, the evaluation of 47DHF-MWCNTs for activity showed an IC50 value of 0.051 ± 0.01 μg/ml and 0.072 ± 0.01 μg/ml against the promastigote and amastigote form, respectively. 47DHF-MWCNTs exhibited an infectivity index of 42 and selectivity index of 95, suggesting the activity of 47DHF-MWCNTs against intracellular amastigotes in the study. The 47DHF-MWCNTs also had low cytotoxicity towards macrophage cells. Fascinatingly, the 47DHF-MWCNTs treatment causes a high accumulation of ROS in the promastigotes suggesting the mechanism of anti-leishmanial activity to be ROS mediated. Summarizing from our results, we propose for the first time a novel 47DHF conjugated MWCNTs capable of anti-leishmanial activity with lower cytotoxicity that has a huge potential to be a formulation against leishmaniasis.

Supercapacitor Performance of NiO, NiO-MWCNT, and NiO-Fe-MWCNT Composites

The NiO-CNT and NiO-Fe-CNT composites that have been prepared from waste high density polyethylene plastic and their carbon nanotube (CNT) quality-dependent supercapacitance tuning have been reported here. Multiwalled CNT (MWCNT) formation has been confirmed from TEM and Raman spectra with an ID/IG ratio of 0.77, which stands for high graphitization. The specific surface area (SSA) of MWCNTs in the NiO-Fe-CNT composite was 87.8 m2/g, while in the NiO-CNT composite, it was 25 m2/g. NiO-Fe-CNT displayed higher specific capacitance and energy density (1360 Fg-1 and 1180 W h kg-1) than NiO-CNT (1250 Fg-1 and 1000 W h kg-1), which may be due to the presence of higher-quality MWCNTs in the NiO-Fe-CNT composite. NiO-Fe-CNT displayed higher contributions of electric double-layer capacitor (59%) behavior compared to NiO-CNT (38%) and represented a hybrid supercapacitor. NiO-Fe-CNT also displayed a capacitive retention of 96% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, studies in acidic electrolytes revealed higher performance of NiO-Fe-CNT than NiO-CNT, displaying specific capacitances of NiO-Fe-CNT to be 1147 Fg-1 in 2 M H2SO4 and 943 Fg-1 in 2 M HCl. It has been qualitatively explored that the quality of CNTs, SSA, and quantum confinement effects in the composites may be the factors responsible for the performance difference in NiO-Fe-CNT and NiO-CNT. The present work is geared toward the low-cost fabrication of high-quality CNT composites for supercapacitors and energy storage applications. The present work also contributes quantitatively to the understanding of CNT quality as an important parameter for the performance of CNT-composite-based supercapacitors.

A Recyclable Standalone Microporous Layer with Interpenetrating Network for Sustainable Fuel Cells

The commercialization of fuel cells inevitably brings recycling problems. Therefore, achieving high recyclability of fuel cells is particularly important for their sustainable development. In this work, a recyclable standalone microporous layer (standalone MPL) with interpenetrating network that can significantly enhance the recyclability and sustainability of fuel cells is prepared. The interpenetrating network enables the standalone MPL to have high strength (17.7 MPa), gas permeability (1.55 × 10-13  m2 ), and fuel-cell performance (peak power density 1.35 W cm-2 ), providing the basic guarantee for its application in high-performance and highly recyclable fuel cells. Additionally, the standalone MPL is highly adaptable to various gas-diffusion backings (GDBs), providing high possibility to select highly recyclable GDBs. Outstandingly, anode standalone MPLs and GDBs can be easily detached from the spent membrane electrode assembly (MEA). This not only saves >90 vol% solvent in the recovery of the catalyst-coated membrane (CCM), but also extends the service life of the GDBs and the anode standalone MPL at least 138 times (2 760 000 h assuming 20 000 h of CCM) comparing to CCM. Therefore, the standalone MPL significantly enhances the recyclability and sustainability of fuel cells and is promising to be an indispensable component in the next-generation fuel cells.

Short-Term Intravenous Administration of Carbon Nano-Onions is Non-Toxic in Female Mice

Background

A nanoscale drug carrier could have a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic uses provided that the carrier is biocompatible in vivo. Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) have shown promising results as a nanocarrier for drug delivery. However, the systemic effect of CNOs in rodents is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the toxicity of CNOs following intravenous administration in female BALB/c mice.

Results

Single or repeated administration of oxi-CNOs (125, 250 or 500 µg) did not affect mouse behavior or organ weight and there was also no evidence of hepatotoxicity or nephrotoxicity. Histological examination of organ slices revealed a significant dose-dependent accumulation of CNO aggregates in the spleen, liver and lungs (p<0.05, ANOVA), with a trace amount of aggregates appearing in the kidneys. However, CNO aggregates in the liver did not affect CYP450 enzymes, as total hepatic CYP450 as well as CYP3A catalytic activity, as meased by erythromycin N-demethylation, and protein levels showed no significant changes between the treatment groups compared to vehicle control. CNOs also failed to act as competitive inhibitors of CYP3A in vitro in both mouse and human liver microsomes. Furthermore, CNOs did not cause oxidative stress, as indicated by the unchanged malondialdehyde levels and superoxide dismutase activity in liver microsomes and organ homogenates.

Conclusion

This study provides the first evidence that short-term intravenous administration of oxi-CNOs is non-toxic to female mice and thus could be a promising novel and safe drug carrier.

Tubular nanomaterials for bone tissue engineering

Nanomaterial composition, morphology, and mechanical performance are critical parameters for tissue engineering. Within this rapidly expanding space, tubular nanomaterials (TNs), including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), titanium oxide nanotubes (TNTs), halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), silica nanotubes (SiNTs), and hydroxyapatite nanotubes (HANTs) have shown significant potential across a broad range of applications due to their high surface area, versatile surface chemistry, well-defined mechanical properties, excellent biocompatibility, and monodispersity. These include drug delivery vectors, imaging contrast agents, and scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. This review is centered on the recent developments in TN-based biomaterials for structural tissue engineering, with a strong focus on bone tissue regeneration. It includes a detailed literature review on TN-based orthopedic coatings for metallic implants and composite scaffolds to enhance in vivo bone regeneration.

Nanomaterial interfaces designed with different biorecognition elements for biosensing of key foodborne pathogens

Foodborne diseases caused by pathogen bacteria are a serious problem toward the safety of human life in a worldwide. Conventional methods for pathogen bacteria detection have several handicaps, including trained personnel requirement, low sensitivity, laborious enrichment steps, low selectivity, and long-term experiments. There is a need for precise and rapid identification and detection of foodborne pathogens. Biosensors are a remarkable alternative for the detection of foodborne bacteria compared to conventional methods. In recent years, there are different strategies for the designing of specific and sensitive biosensors. Researchers activated to develop enhanced biosensors with different transducer and recognition elements. Thus, the aim of this study was to provide a topical and detailed review on aptamer, nanofiber, and metal organic framework-based biosensors for the detection of food pathogens. First, the conventional methods, type of biosensors, common transducer, and recognition element were systematically explained. Then, novel signal amplification materials and nanomaterials were introduced. Last, current shortcomings were emphasized, and future alternatives were discussed.

MXene-Based Nanocomposites for Piezoelectric and Triboelectric Energy Harvesting Applications

Due to its superior advantages in terms of electronegativity, metallic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, customizable surface chemistry, etc., 2D MXenes for nanogenerators have demonstrated significant progress. In order to push scientific design strategies for the practical application of nanogenerators from the viewpoints of the basic aspect and recent advancements, this systematic review covers the most recent developments of MXenes for nanogenerators in its first section. In the second section, the importance of renewable energy and an introduction to nanogenerators, major classifications, and their working principles are discussed. At the end of this section, various materials used for energy harvesting and frequent combos of MXene with other active materials are described in detail together with the essential framework of nanogenerators. In the third, fourth, and fifth sections, the materials used for nanogenerators, MXene synthesis along with its properties, and MXene nanocomposites with polymeric materials are discussed in detail with the recent progress and challenges for their use in nanogenerator applications. In the sixth section, a thorough discussion of the design strategies and internal improvement mechanisms of MXenes and the composite materials for nanogenerators with 3D printing technologies are presented. Finally, we summarize the key points discussed throughout this review and discuss some thoughts on potential approaches for nanocomposite materials based on MXenes that could be used in nanogenerators for better performance.

Nanoantibiotic effect of carbon-based nanocomposites: epicentric on graphene, carbon nanotubes and fullerene composites: a review

Carbon in many different forms especially, Graphene, Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and Fullerene is emerging as an important material in the areas of the biomedical field for various applications. This review comprehensively describes the nano antibiotic effect of carbon-based nanocomposites: epicenter on graphene, carbon nanotubes, and fullerene Composites. It summarises the studies conducted to evaluate their antimicrobial applications as they can disrupt the cell membrane of bacteria resulting in cell death. The initial section gives a glimpse of both "Gram"-positive and negative bacteria, which have been affected by Graphene, CNTs, and Fullerene-based nanocomposites. These bacteria include Staphylococcus Aureus, Bacillus Thuringiensis, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebseilla pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Pseudomonas syringae , Shigella flexneri,Candida Albicans, Mucor. Another section is dedicated to the insight of Graphene, and its types such as Graphene Oxide (GO), Reduced graphene oxide (rGO), Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs), Graphene Nanoribbons (GNRs), and Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs). Insight into CNT, including both the types SWCNT and MWCNT, studied, followed by understanding fullerene is also reported. Another section is dedicated to the antibacterial mechanism of Graphene, CNT, and Fullerene-based nanocomposites. Further, an additional section is dedicated to a comprehensive review of the antibacterial characteristics of Graphene, CNT, and nanocomposites based on fullerene. Future perspectives and recommendations have also been highlighted in the last section.

Carbon-Based Nanomaterials as Drug Delivery Agents for Colorectal Cancer: Clinical Preface to Colorectal Cancer Citing Their Markers and Existing Theranostic Approaches

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the universally established cancers with a higher incidence rate. Novel progression toward cancer prevention and cancer care among countries in transition should be considered seriously for controlling CRC. Hence, several cutting edge technologies are ongoing for high performance cancer therapeutics over the past few decades. Several drug-delivery systems of the nanoregime are relatively new in this arena compared to the previous treatment modes such as chemo- or radiotherapy to mitigate cancer. Based on this background, the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, treatment possibilities, and theragnostic markers for CRC were revealed. Since the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the management of CRC has been less studied, the present review analyzes the preclinical studies on the application of carbon nanotubes for drug delivery and CRC therapy owing to their inherent properties. It also investigates the toxicity of CNTs on normal cells for safety testing and the clinical use of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) for tumor localization. To conclude, this review recommends the clinical application of carbon-based nanomaterials further for the management of CRC in diagnosis and as carriers or therapeutic adjuvants.

Review on lignocellulose valorization for nanocarbon and its composites: Starting from laboratory studies to business application

This study concerns a scoping and literature review of nanocarbon and its composites with details on specific propositions, including nanocarbon history, nanocarbon types, and lignocellulose nanocarbon types, properties, applications, toxicity, regulation, and business model for commercialization. The review brings novelties, comprehensively expounding on laboratory studies and industrial applications of biomass or lignocellulose materials-derived nanocarbon and its composites. Since its first discovery in the form of Buckyball in 1985, nanocarbon has brought interest to scientists and industries for applications. From the previous studies, it is discovered that many types of nanocarbon are sourced from lignocellulose materials. With their excellent properties of nanomaterials, nanocarbon has been harnessed for such as reinforcing and filler agents for nanocomposites or direct use of individual nanocarbon for specific purposes. However, the toxicological properties of nanocarbon have delivered a level of concern in its use and application. In addition, with the radically growing increase in the use of nanocarbon, policies have been enacted in several countries that rule on the use of nanocarbon. The business model for the commercialization of lignocellulose-based nanocarbon was also proposed in this study. This study can showcase the importance of both individual nanocarbon and nanocarbon-based composites for industrial implementations by considering their synthesis, properties, application, country legislations/regulations, and business model. The studies also can be the major references for researchers to partner with industries and governments in investing in lignocellulose-sourced nanocarbon potential research, development, and policies.

Modern Electrochemical Biosensing Based on Nucleic Acids and Carbon Nanomaterials

To meet the requirements of novel therapies, effective treatments should be supported by diagnostic tools characterized by appropriate analytical and working parameters. These are, in particular, fast and reliable responses that are proportional to analyte concentration, with low detection limits, high selectivity, cost-efficient construction, and portability, allowing for the development of point-of-care devices. Biosensors using nucleic acids as receptors has turned out to be an effective approach for meeting the abovementioned requirements. Careful design of the receptor layers will allow them to obtain DNA biosensors that are dedicated to almost any analyte, including ions, low and high molecular weight compounds, nucleic acids, proteins, and even whole cells. The impulse for the application of carbon nanomaterials in electrochemical DNA biosensors is rooted in the possibility to further influence their analytical parameters and adjust them to the chosen analysis. Such nanomaterials enable the lowering of the detection limit, the extension of the biosensor linear response, or the increase in selectivity. This is possible thanks to their high conductivity, large surface-to-area ratio, ease of chemical modification, and introduction of other nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles, into the carbon structures. This review discusses the recent advances on the design and application of carbon nanomaterials in electrochemical DNA biosensors that are dedicated especially to modern medical diagnostics.

Fabrication and desired properties of conductive hydrogel dressings for wound healing

Conductive hydrogels are platforms recognized as constituting promising materials for tissue engineering applications. This is because such conductive hydrogels are characterized by the inherent conductivity properties while retaining favorable biocompatibility and mechanical properties. These conductive hydrogels can be particularly useful in enhancing wound healing since their favorable conductivity can promote the transport of essential ions for wound healing via the imposition of a so-called transepithelial potential. Other valuable properties of these conductive hydrogels, such as wound monitoring, stimuli-response etc., are also discussed in this study. Crucially, the properties of conductive hydrogels, such as 3D printability and monitoring properties, suggest the possibility of its use as an alternative wound dressing to traditional dressings such as bandages. This review, therefore, seeks to comprehensively explore the functionality of conductive hydrogels in wound healing, types of conductive hydrogels and their preparation strategies and crucial properties of hydrogels. This review will also assess the limitations of conductive hydrogels and future perspectives, with an emphasis on the development trend for conductive hydrogel uses in wound dressing fabrication for subsequent clinical applications.

Pristine, carboxylated, and hybrid multi-walled carbon nanotubes exert potent antioxidant activities in in vitro-cell free systems

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are tubular-shaped carbon allotropes, composed of multiple concentric graphene cylinders. The extended systems of conjugated double bonds, that MWCNTs are constituted by, provide them with high electron affinities, enabling them to act as electron donors or acceptors. Consequently, their potential biomedical applications, as synthetic antioxidant agents, are of particular interest. Based on the above, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the intrinsic antioxidant properties of pristine and carboxylated MWCNTs, as well as of novel hybrid nanocomposites of MWCNTs and inorganic nanoparticles. To this end, after the synthesis and characterization of MWCNTs, their antiradical, reducing, and antigenotoxic properties were assessed in cell-free assays, using a methodological approach that has been recently proposed by our research group. According to our results, most of the tested MWCNTs exhibited strong antioxidant activities. More elaborately, the hybrid material of MWCNTs and ferrous oxide nanoparticles, i.e., CNTs@Fe₃O₄, showed robust scavenging capacities in all free-radical scavenging assays examined. As regards reducing properties, the pristine MWCNTs, i.e., CNTs-Ref, exhibited the greater electron donating capacity. Finally, in terms of antigenotoxic properties, the hybrid material of MWCNTs and silicon carbide nanoparticles, i.e., CNTs@SiC, exhibited potent ability to inhibit the formation of peroxyl radicals, thus preventing from the oxidative DNA damage. Conclusively, our findings suggest that the MWCNTs of the study could be considered as promising broad-spectrum antioxidants, however, further investigations are required to evaluate their toxicological profile in cell-based and in vivo systems.

Recent Prospects of Carbonaceous Nanomaterials-Based Laccase Biosensor for Electrochemical Detection of Phenolic Compounds

Phenolic compounds (PhCs) are ubiquitously distributed phytochemicals found in many plants, body fluids, food items, medicines, pesticides, dyes, etc. Many PhCs are priority pollutants that are highly toxic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic. Some of these are present in body fluids and affect metabolism, while others possess numerous bioactive properties such as retaining antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in plants and food products. Therefore, there is an urgency for developing an effective, rapid, sensitive, and reliable tool for the analysis of these PhCs to address their environmental and health concern. In this context, carbonaceous nanomaterials have emerged as a promising material for the fabrication of electrochemical biosensors as they provide remarkable characteristics such as lightweight, high surface: volume, excellent conductivity, extraordinary tensile strength, and biocompatibility. This review outlines the current status of the applications of carbonaceous nanomaterials (CNTs, graphene, etc.) based enzymatic electrochemical biosensors for the detection of PhCs. Efforts have also been made to discuss the mechanism of action of the laccase enzyme for the detection of PhCs. The limitations, advanced emerging carbon-based material, current state of artificial intelligence in PhCs detection, and future scopes have also been summarized.

Tyrosinase Immobilization Strategies for the Development of Electrochemical Biosensors-A Review

The development of enzyme biosensors has successfully overcome various challenges such as enzyme instability, loss of enzyme activity or long response time. In the electroanalytical field, tyrosinase is used to develop biosensors that exploit its ability to catalyze the oxidation of numerous types of phenolic compounds with antioxidant and neurotransmitter roles. This review critically examines the main tyrosinase immobilization techniques for the development of sensitive electrochemical biosensors. Immobilization strategies are mainly classified according to the degree of reversibility/irreversibility of enzyme binding to the support material. Each tyrosinase immobilization method has advantages and limitations, and its selection depends mainly on the type of support electrode, electrode-modifying nanomaterials, cross-linking agent or surfactants used. Tyrosinase immobilization by cross-linking is characterized by very frequent use with outstanding performance of the developed biosensors. Additionally, research in recent years has focused on new immobilization strategies involving cross-linking, such as cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) and magnetic cross-linked enzyme aggregates (mCLEAs). Therefore, it can be considered that cross-linking immobilization is the most feasible and economical approach, also providing the possibility of selecting the reagents used and the order of the immobilization steps, which favor the enhancement of biosensor performance characteristics.

A comprehensive review on bio-mimicked multimolecular frameworks and supramolecules as scaffolds for enzyme immobilization

Immobilization depicts a propitious route to optimize the catalytic performances, efficient recovery, minimizing autocatalysis, and also augment the stabilities of enzymes, particularly in unnatural environments. In this opinion, supramolecules and multimolecular frameworks have captivated immense attention to achieve profound controllable interactions between enzyme molecules and well-defined natural or synthetic architectures to yield protein bioconjugates with high accessibility for substrate binding and enhanced enantioselectivities. This scholastic review emphasizes the possibilities of associating multimolecular complexes with biological entities via several types of interactions, namely covalent interactions, host-guest complexation, π - π ${\rm{\pi }}-{\rm{\pi }}$ interactions, intra/inter hydrogen bondings, electrostatic interactions, and so forth offers remarkable applications for the modulations of enzymes. The potential synergies between artificial supramolecular structures and biological systems are the primary concern of this pedagogical review. The majority of the research primarily focused on the dynamic biomolecule-responsive supramolecular assemblages and multimolecular architectures as ideal platforms for the recognition and modulation of proteins and cells. Embracing sustainable green demeanors of enzyme immobilizations in a quest to reinforce site-selectivity, catalytic efficiency, and structural integrality of enzymes are the contemporary requirements of the biotechnological sectors that instigate the development of novel biocatalytic systems.

Advances in Lung Cancer Treatment Using Nanomedicines

Carcinoma of the lungs is among the most menacing forms of malignancy and has a poor prognosis, with a low overall survival rate due to delayed detection and ineffectiveness of conventional therapy. Therefore, drug delivery strategies that may overcome undesired damage to healthy cells, boost therapeutic efficacy, and act as imaging tools are currently gaining much attention. Advances in material science have resulted in unique nanoscale-based theranostic agents, which provide renewed hope for patients suffering from lung cancer. Nanotechnology has vastly modified and upgraded the existing techniques, focusing primarily on increasing bioavailability and stability of anti-cancer drugs. Nanocarrier-based imaging systems as theranostic tools in the treatment of lung carcinoma have proven to possess considerable benefits, such as early detection and targeted therapeutic delivery for effectively treating lung cancer. Several variants of nano-drug delivery agents have been successfully studied for therapeutic applications, such as liposomes, dendrimers, polymeric nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, carbon nanotubes, gold nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, hydrogels, and micelles. In this Review, we present a comprehensive outline on the various types of overexpressed receptors in lung cancer, as well as the various targeting approaches of nanoparticles.

Alternative High-Performance Fibers for Nonwoven HEPA Filter Media

Continual research, development, and advancement in air filtration technology is important to abate the ever increasing health hazards of air pollution and global pandemics. The purpose of this review is to survey, categorize, and compare mechanical and thermal characteristics of fibers to assess their potential applicability in air filter media. The history of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter development explains how we arrived at the current state of the art nonwoven fibrous borosilicate glass filter paper. This review explores the history and practical uses of particular fiber types and explains fiber production methods in general terms. The thermal and mechanical properties of particular fibers are examined using the codes and standards produced by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to generalize the applicability of fiber categories for HEPA filter units within the nuclear air cleaning industry. This review discusses common measurements for specific strength and tenacity used by the textile and construction industries. Particular fibers are selectively compared for density, tensile strength, tensile stiffness, flexural rigidity, moisture regain, decomposition temperature, and thermal expansion. This review concludes with a subjective assessment of which types of fibers may be appropriate to study for HEPA filtration.

The Use of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy as a Tool for the In-Situ Monitoring and Characterization of Carbon Nanotube Aqueous Dispersions

So far, there is no validated technology for characterizing the dispersion and morphology state of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) aqueous dispersions during sonication. Taking advantage of the conductive nature of CNTs, the main hypothesis of the current study is that Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is an appropriate technique for the in-situ monitoring and qualification of the dispersion state of CNTs in aqueous media. To confirm our hypothesis, we monitored the Impedance |Z| during the sonication process as a function of type CNTs/admixtures used for the preparation of the aqueous solutions and of crucial process parameters, such as the applied sonication power and duration (i.e., sonication energy). For dispersions above the percolation threshold, a drop of |Z| by approximately seven orders of magnitude was observed, followed by a linear reduction. The dramatic change in |Z| is regarded as an indication of the formation of a conductive path or destruction of an existing one during sonication and can be used to characterize the dispersion and morphology state of CNTs. The results of the EIS provide, straightforwardly and reliably, the required information to create an optimum dispersion protocol for conductive CNT suspensions. The produced dispersions are part of research focusing on the manufacturing of cement-based composite materials with advanced thermoelectric functionalities for energy harvesting. Such dispersions are not only limited to energy harvesting applications but also to applications where functionalities are introduced through the use of conductive-based suspensions.

Fabrication of Conductive Fabrics Based on SWCNTs, MWCNTs and Graphene and Their Applications: A Review

In recent years, the field of conductive fabrics has been challenged by the increasing popularity of these materials in the production of conductive, flexible and lightweight textiles, so-called smart textiles, which make our lives easier. These electronic textiles can be used in a wide range of human applications, from medical devices to consumer products. Recently, several scientific results on smart textiles have been published, focusing on the key factors that affect the performance of smart textiles, such as the type of substrate, the type of conductive materials, and the manufacturing method to use them in the appropriate application. Smart textiles have already been fabricated from various fabrics and different conductive materials, such as metallic nanoparticles, conductive polymers, and carbon-based materials. In this review, we study the fabrication of conductive fabrics based on carbon materials, especially carbon nanotubes and graphene, which represent a growing class of high-performance materials for conductive textiles and provide them with superior electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Therefore, this paper comprehensively describes conductive fabrics based on single-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and graphene. The fabrication process, physical properties, and their increasing importance in the field of electronic devices are discussed.

Efficiency of zero-dimensional and two-dimensional graphene architectural nanocomposites for organic transformations in the contemporary environment: a review

Graphene derivatives-based nanocatalyst finds increasing utilisation in the catalysis field for organic transformations. Researchers have been working on the development of graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and graphene quantum dots with metal or metal oxide nanocomposites over the last few years. These materials exhibit excellent electrical, catalytic, optical, thermal, and magnetic properties. In particular, GO/rGO/GQDs composites assisted by metal or metal oxides have attracted broad attention for their possible applications in organic compound synthesis, drug delivery, sensors, devices, and the related areas of the environment. In this review, we have summarised GO/rGO/GQDs-metal or metal oxide composites using catalyst for organic conversions and synthesis of organic compounds in accordance with the discussion on the key problems and prospects for future study. Furthermore, there is a significant function for the catalytic efficiency of composites assisted by metal or metal oxide nanocatalyst which is categorised by graphene derivatives bases.

Competitive Formation Zones in Carbon Nanotube Float-Catalysis Synthesis: Growth in Length vs. Growth Suppression

Catalytic synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNT) produces numerous various byproducts such as soot, graphite platelets, catalyst nanoparticles, etc. Identification of the byproduct formation mechanisms would help develop routes to more selective synthesis of better carbon-based materials. This work reports on the identification of the formation zone and conditions for rather unusual closed multishell carbon nanocapsules in a reactor for float-catalysis synthesis of longer CNT. Structural investigation of the formed nanocapsule material along with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the reactor suggested a nanocapsule formation mechanism, in which CNT embryos are suppressed in growth by the in-reactor turbulence. By means of TEM and FFT investigation, it is found that differently oriented single crystals of γ-Fe₂O₃, which do not have clear connections with each other, determine a spherical surface. The carbon atoms that seep through these joints do not form crystalline graphite layers. The resulting additional product in the form of graphene-coated (γ-Fe/Fe₃C)/γ-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles can be a lightweight and effective microwave absorber.

Nanoparticles Loaded with Platinum Drugs for Colorectal Cancer Therapy

Colorectal cancer is a common cancer in both men and women. Numerous studies on the therapeutic effectiveness of nanoparticles against colorectal cancer have been reported. Platinum treatments as well as other medications comprising of nanoparticles have been utilized. Drug resistance restricts the use of platinum medicines, despite their considerable efficacy against a variety of cancers. This review reports clinically licensed platinum medicines (cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin) combined with various nanoparticles that have been evaluated for their therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of colorectal cancer, including their mechanism of action, resistance, and limitations.

Effects of Carbon Nanomaterials and Aloe vera on Melanomas-Where Are We? Recent Updates

Melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer that affects approximately 140,000 people worldwide each year, with a high fatality rate. Available treatment modalities show limited efficacy in more severe cases. Hence, the search for new treatment modalities, including immunotherapies, for curing, mitigating, and/or preventing cancer is important and urgently needed. Carbon nanoparticles associated with some plant materials, such as Aloe vera, have shown appealing antineoplastic activity, derived mainly from the compounds aloin, aloe-emodin, barbaloin acemannan, and octapeptide, thus representing new possibilities as antitumor agents. This systematic review aims to arouse interest and present the possibilities of using Aloe vera combined with carbon-based nanomaterials as an antineoplastic agent in the treatment and prevention of melanoma. Limitations and advances in melanoma treatment using functionalized carbon nanomaterials are discussed here. Moreover, this review provides the basis for further studies designed to fully explore the potential of carbon nanomaterials associated with Aloe vera in the treatment of various cancers, with a focus on melanoma.

Electrospun aluminum silicate nanofibers as novel support material for immobilization of alcohol dehydrogenase

Ceramic materials with high surface area, large and open porosity are considered excellent supports for enzyme immobilization owing to their stability and reusability. The present study reports the electrospinning of aluminum silicate nanofiber supports from sol-gel precursors, the impact of different fabrication parameters on the microstructure of the nanofibers and their performance in enzyme immobilization. A change in nanofiber diameter and pore size of the aluminum silicate nanofibers was observed upon varying specific processing parameters, such as the sol-composition (precursor and polymer concentration), the electrospinning parameters and the subsequent heat treatment (calcination temperature). The enzyme, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), was immobilized on the aluminum silicate nanofibers by physical adsorption and covalent bonding. Activity retention of 17% and 42% was obtained after 12 d of storage and repeated reaction cycles for physically adsorbed and covalently bonded ADH, respectively. Overall, the immobilization of ADH on aluminum silicate nanofibers resulted in high enzyme loading and activity retention. However, as compared to covalent immobilization, a marked decrease in the enzyme activity during storage for physically adsorbed enzymes was observed, which was ascribed to leakage of the enzymes from the nanofibers. Such fibers can improve enzyme stability and promote a higher residual activity of the immobilized enzyme as compared to the free enzyme. The results shown in this study thus suggest that aluminum silicate nanofibers, with their high surface area, are promising support materials for the immobilization of enzymes.

A Synergistic Effect of Phthalimide-Substituted Sulfanyl Porphyrazines and Carbon Nanotubes to Improve the Electrocatalytic Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide

A sulfanyl porphyrazine derivative with peripheral phthalimide moieties was metallated with cobalt(II) and iron(II) metal ions. The purity of the macrocycles was confirmed by HPLC, and subsequently, compounds were characterized using various analytical methods (ES-TOF, MALDI-TOF, UV–VIS, and NMR spectroscopy). To obtain hybrid electroactive electrode materials, novel porphyrazines were combined with multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The electrocatalytic effect derived from cobalt(II) and iron(II) cations was evaluated. As a result, a significant decrease in the overpotential was observed compared with that obtained with bare glassy carbon (GC) or glassy carbon electrode/carbon nanotubes (GC/MWCNTs), which allowed for sensitive determination of hydrogen peroxide in neutral conditions (pH 7.4). The prepared sensor enables a linear response to H₂O₂ concentrations of 1–90 µM. A low detection limit of 0.18 μM and a high sensitivity of 640 μA mM⁻¹ cm⁻² were obtained. These results indicate that the obtained sensors could potentially be applied in biomedical and environmental fields.

Improving the air quality with Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes: Sensing and remediation applications in the real world

With the world developing exponentially every day, the collateral damage to air is incessant. There are many methods to purify the air but using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as adsorbents remains one of the most efficient and reliable methods, due to their high maximum adsorption capacity which renders them extremely useful for removing pollutants from the air. The different types of CNTs, their synthesis, functionalization, purification, functioning, and advantages over conventional filters are deliberated along with diverse types of CNTs like single-walled (SWCNTs), multiwalled (MWCNTs), and others, which can be functionalized and deployed for the removal of harmful gases like oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, and ozone, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), among others. A comprehensive description of CNTs is provided in this overview with illustrative examples from the past five years. The fabrication methods and target gases of many CNTs-based gas sensors are highlighted, in addition to the comparison of their properties, mainly sensitivity. The effect of functionalization on sensors has been discussed in detail for various composites targeting specific gases, including the future outlook of functionalized CNTs in assorted practical applications.

Computational Studies of the Excitonic and Optical Properties of Armchair SWCNT and SWBNNT for Optoelectronics Applications

In this study, the optical refractive constants of the (5, 5) SWBNNT and (5, 5) SWCNT systems were calculated in both parallel and perpendicular directions of the tube axis by using Quantum ESPRESSO and YAMBO code. It also extended the optical behaviors of (5, 5) SWCNT and (5, 5) SWBNNT to both perpendicular and parallel directions instead of the parallel directions reported in the literature. It also looked at the effects of the diameter of the nanotube on the optical properties instead of chiral angles. From our results, the best optical reflection was found for (5, 5) SWBNNT, while the best optical refraction was found with (5, 5) SWCNT. It was observed that the SWCNT demonstrates refraction in both parallel and perpendicular directions, while (5, 5) SWBNNT shows perfect absorption in perpendicular direction. These new features that appeared for both nanotubes in perpendicular directions were due to new optical band gaps, which appear in the perpendicular directions to both nanotubes’ axis. The electron energy loss (EEL) spectrum of SWBNNT revealed the prominent π- and π + δ- Plasmon peaks, which demonstrates themselves in the reflectivity spectrum. Furthermore, little effect of diameter was observed for the perpendicular direction to both nanotubes’ axis; as such, the combined properties of (5, 5) SWBNNT and (5, 5) SWCNT materials/systems for transmitting light offer great potential for applications in mobile phone touch screens and mobile network antennas. In addition, the studies of optical properties in the perpendicular axis will help bring ultra-small nanotubes such as SWCNT and SWBNNT to the applications of next-generation nanotechnology.

Engineering plants with carbon nanotubes: a sustainable agriculture approach

Sustainable agriculture is an important conception to meet the growing food demand of the global population. The increased need for adequate and safe food, as well as the ongoing ecological destruction associated with conventional agriculture practices are key global challenges. Nanomaterials are being developed in the agriculture sector to improve the growth and protection of crops. Among the various engineered nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the most promising carbon-based nanomaterials owing to their attractive physiochemical properties such as small size, high surface area, and superior mechanical and thermal strength, offering better opportunities for agriculture sector applications. This review provides basic information about CNTs, including their history; classification; and electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties, with a focus on their applications in the agriculture field. Furthermore, the mechanisms of the uptake and translocation of CNTs in plants and their defense mechanisms against environmental stresses are discussed. Finally, the major shortcomings, threats, and challenges of CNTs are assessed to provide a broad and clear view of the potential and future directions for CNT-based agriculture applications to achieve the goal of sustainability.

Nano-Structured Carbon: Its Synthesis from Renewable Agricultural Sources and Important Applications

Carbon materials are versatile in nature due to their unique and modifiable surface and ease of production. Nanostructured carbon materials are gaining importance due to their high surface area for application in the energy, biotechnology, biomedical, and environmental fields. According to their structures, carbon allotropes are classified as carbon nanodots, carbon nanoparticles, graphene, oxide, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes. They are synthesized via several methods, including pyrolysis, microwave method, hydrothermal synthesis, and chemical vapor deposition, and the use of renewable and cheaper agricultural feedstocks and reactants is increasing for reducing cost and simplifying production. This review explores the nanostructured carbon detailed investigation of sources and their relevant reports. Many of the renewable sources are covered as focused here, such as sugar cane waste, pineapple, its solid biomass, rise husk, date palm, nicotine tabacum stems, lapsi seed stone, rubber-seed shell, coconut shell, and orange peels. The main focus of this work is on the various methods used to synthesize these carbon materials from agricultural waste materials, and their important applications for energy storage devices, optoelectronics, biosensors, and polymer coatings.

Biocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of secondary allylic alcohols using Burkholderia cepacia lipase immobilized on multiwalled carbon nanotubes

The lipase from Burkholderia cepacia (BCL) was immobilized through physical adsorption on pristine and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with carboxyl or amine groups and used in the stereoselective acylation of (R,S)-1-octen-3-ol (1) and (R,S)-(E)-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-ol (4) with vinyl acetate. All immobilized preparations produced better results than free BCL. For (R,S)-4, 50% conversion and E > 200 were obtained in n-hexane or in solvent-free medium. For (R,S)-1, in solvent-free medium, the conversion was 38% with a slight increase in the E-value (E = 10).

Carbon-Supported Noble-Metal Nanoparticles for Catalytic Applications—A Review

Noble-metal nanoparticles (NMNPs), with their outstanding properties, have been arousing the interest of scientists for centuries. Although our knowledge of them is much more significant today, and we can obtain NMNPs in various sizes, shapes, and compositions, our interest in them has not waned. When talking about noble metals, gold, silver, and platinum come to mind first. Still, we cannot forget about elements belonging to the so-called platinum group, such as ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, and iridium, whose physical and chemical properties are very similar to those of platinum. It makes them highly demanded and widely used in various applications. This review presents current knowledge on the preparation of all noble metals in the form of nanoparticles and their assembling with carbon supports. We focused on the catalytic applications of these materials in the fuel-cell field. Furthermore, the influence of supporting materials on the electrocatalytic activity, stability, and selectivity of noble-metal-based catalysts is discussed.
