Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze differences in the menstrual pattern, age at menarche, and body mass index (BMI) in adolescents with Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian (HPO) axis immaturity and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS The PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Virtual Health Library, Scopus databases were searched using combinations of descriptors. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. For data analysis, the results were grouped into PCOS group and NPCOS group (HPO axis immaturity). We performed a meta-analysis of raw data and the inverse variance method, employing the standardized mean difference, of the age at menarche and BMI of adolescents. RESULTS Participants totaled 1,718 from nine selected studies. The meta-analysis showed that the PCOS group had a higher BMI than the NPCOS group (SMD 0.334; CI95% 0.073 - 0.595; p = .012). The degree of heterogeneity of the studies was approximately 40%. No significant difference in age at menarche (SMD - 0.027; CI95% -0.227 - 0.172; p = 0.790) and menstrual patterns was found, but amenorrhea was described only in adolescents with PCOS. CONCLUSIONS The main characteristic in menstrual pattern that differentiated PCOS patients from girls with HPO axis immaturity was amenorrhea. Also, the BMI of PCOS patients was nearly one third higher than that of adolescents with HPO axis immaturity.

Abstract
Background In modern times, metabolic disorders are most common and one of them is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women, which causes high morbidity and complications. PCOS has largely been a neglected and less researched area; however, it is gaining importance in recent times as PCOS is increasing as well as it can be prevented to a considerable extent. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess knowledge among females in government hospitals in Northern India. Data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire on 300 women (completed 270), selected by proportionate sampling technique, and admitted in government hospitals. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 23. Results The results showed that the mean age of respondents was 33.02 ± 9.039 years, the mean age at menarche was 12.33 ± 2.13 years, and the mean of gravida status was 1.82 ± 0.78 years. Only half of the respondents had good knowledge about PCOS. Conclusion This study suggests that efforts are needed to reinforce women's knowledge through setting-based awareness campaigns and health education in this context to enable them to identify and seek timely treatment and improve their quality of life.

Abstract
Introduction Asthma and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are linked in several possible ways. To date, there has been no study evaluating whether pediatric asthma is an independent risk factor for adult PCOS. Our study aimed to examine the association between pediatric asthma (diagnosed at 0-19 years) and adult PCOS (diagnosed at ≥20 years). We further assessed whether the aforementioned association differed in two phenotypes of adult PCOS which were diagnosed at 20-25 years (young adult PCOS), and at >25 years (older adult PCOS). We also evaluated whether the age of asthma diagnosis (0-10 vs 11-19 years) modified the association between pediatric asthma and adult PCOS. Material and methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional analysis using the United Arab Emirates Healthy Future Study (UAEHFS) collected from February 2016 to April 2022 involving 1334 Emirati females aged 18-49 years. We fitted a Poisson regression model to estimate the risk ratio (RR) and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) to assess the association between pediatric asthma and adult PCOS adjusting for age, urbanicity at birth, and parental smoking at birth. Results After adjusting for confounding factors and comparing to non-asthmatic counterparts, we found that females with pediatric asthma had a statistically significant association with adult PCOS diagnosed at ≥20 years (RR=1.56, 95% CI: 1.02-2.41), with a stronger magnitude of the association found in the older adult PCOS phenotype diagnosed at >25 years (RR=2.06, 95% CI: 1.16-3.65). Further, we also found females reported thinner childhood body size had a two-fold to three-fold increased risk of adult PCOS diagnosed at ≥20 years in main analysis and stratified analyses by age of asthma and PCOS diagnoses (RR=2.06, 95% CI: 1.08-3.93 in main analysis; RR=2.74, 95% CI: 1.22-6.15 among those diagnosed with PCOS > 25 years; and RR=3.50, 95% CI: 1.38-8.43 among those diagnosed with asthma at 11-19 years). Conclusions Pediatric asthma was found to be an independent risk factor for adult PCOS. More targeted surveillance for those at risk of adult PCOS among pediatric asthmatics may prevent or delay PCOS in this at-risk group. Future studies with robust longitudinal designs aimed to elucidate the exact mechanism between pediatric asthma and PCOS are warranted.

Abstract
A cohort of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) women presents themselves with persistent abnormal reproductive hormone levels and has a familial representation of characteristics. In our study, we have aimed to identify genetic variants which are inherited across such PCOS families and also validate them among Indian population. Independent discovery was done by whole exome sequencing in a three-generation family (Family P01). Validation was done by targeted sequencing at 30,000x using HaloPlex panel in 9 families (P01-P09). The variants were filtered and reported according to American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines. Mutation burden analysis and in-silico functional analyses were performed. After careful annotation analyses, we report 24 likely pathogenic variants from 21 genes, out of which 8 are novel structural variants, 14 missense variants and 2 intronic variants. Out of these, 3 variants from the genes FSHR, SCARB1, and INSR are involved in the ovarian steroidogenesis pathway and 5 variants from genes DFFB, ACTG1, GPX4, CYC1 and ALDOA directly or indirectly trigger the apoptotic pathways. Three ovarian steroidogenesis variants, FSHR, SCARB1 and INSR were screened among Indian women using a case-control approach to validate these variant's pathogenicity in Indian PCOS women. Variants of SCARB1 and INSR were found to be pathogenic to Indian PCOS women, while FSHR variants did not show significant association to PCOS cases.

Abstract
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition where women reproductive hormones are out of endocrinal balance. Women with PCOS frequently exhibit obesity, which causes irregularities in the levels of adipocytes like adiponectin. It is hypothesized that the altered adiponectin levels also play a role in the endocrine and metabolic abnormalities seen in PCOS women. We aimed to study the association of adiponectin levels with PCOS women. This case control study included 60 PCOS women under 30 age, and BMI matched healthy controls were recruited. For all the subjects Biochemical and serum adiponectin were determined. The serum adiponectin shows significantly decreased in PCOS women when compared to healthy controls (P <0.001**). This levels were inversely associated with BMI and total cholesterol, triglycerides in women with PCOS (P<0.001**). The significantly decreased levels of serum adiponectin can be useful for diagnostic and prognostic tool for PCOS in women and its application can be used for the success of specific emerging treatment modalities where the follow up shows improvement of levels of adiponectin.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in the progenitive age group and the leading cause of infertility. The worldwide prevalence of PCOS in women varies between 2.2% to 26%. Due to limited literature on burden of PCOS among adolescent girls, its significance is still unfathomed as a research is few and far between in the present time. We conducted Systematic review and metanalysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of PCOS among Indian adolescent girls (14-19 years). Methods With the help of a search strategy, two authors searched Scopus, Embase and Pubmed independently. We screened studies considering eligibility criteria and extracted data. Selected studies were assessed for quality and risk biases using the NIH tool. R software was used for analysis. Results Twelve studies were included in the meta-analysis. The total number of participants in the study was 4473. All studies scored average and above as per the NIH quality assessment tool. The prevalence of PCOS among adolescents based on the Rotterdam criteria was 17.74 per 100 (CI = 11.77-23.71) with I2 =97 %. Hospital-based studies had a comparatively higher prevalence of PCOS as compared to community-based. Conclusion Pooled prevalence of PCOS among Indian adolescents’ girls was high, approximately one in five.

Abstract
Background: The features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) vary greatly among adolescent girls and adult women. Some of the features of PCOS may overlap with features of normal pubertal development in girls. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents newly diagnosed with PCOS attending a tertiary hospital in Bangladesh. The relevant clinical, metabolic and hormonal profiles of 175 participants were evaluated. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 16.8 (±1.7) years. Oligomenorrhea was the predominant menstrual irregularity (88%). More than one-quarter of participants (27.4%) had a first-degree relative with PCOS, and 12% had a first-degree relative with type 2 diabetes. More than three-quarters (77.7%) had acanthosis nigricans. The majority (69.1%) were overweight (29.7%) or obese (39.4%), whereas 6.3% were underweight. A total of 65.7% had abdominal obesity. One-fifth (20%) of participants had pre-hypertension, and 3.4% were hypertensive. Around one-quarter (24%) had abnormal glucose tolerance (prediabetes 21.1%, diabetes 2.9%) and the majority (90.9%) had dyslipidaemia. The median Ferriman-Gallwey score was 12, 94.9% of participants had hirsutism and 33.7% had biochemical hyperandrogenism. Metabolic syndrome was present in 42.3% of participants. Higher body mass index and presence of hirsutism were associated with higher risks of metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: The clinical, metabolic and hormonal profiles of Bangladeshi adolescents with PCOS highlight risk factors and the need for clinical vigilance with respect to metabolic disease.

Abstract
Objective Healthy lifestyle and adequate reproductive health knowledge are prerequisites for maintenance of physical and mental well-being of women across the world. With increasing prevalence of metabolic disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it is important that sufficient awareness of these issues is generated, especially in conservative communities in Arab regions. The main objective of this study is to assess reproductive health (RH) knowledge and awareness of PCOS among female Emirati students and also to explore their lifestyle choices. Materials and Methods A total of 493 Emirati students were recruited based on convenience sampling and completed a survey containing questions related to demography, lifestyle preferences, RH knowledge, and PCOS awareness. Results Of the students, 13% self-reported being diagnosed with PCOS, with 3.5% also taking medication for the same, 6% reported having high androgen levels, 30.7% reported polymenorrhea, and 3.5% reported oligomenorrhea for frequency of menstrual cycle. Also, 12.4% students experienced abnormal bleeding (heavy/none) during menstruation and 24% reported excessive body hair. It was found that 4.3% of students were taking medication for hyperglycemia and 75% of students reported a family history of diabetes. Students displayed low reproductive health knowledge and poor awareness of PCOS. Lifestyle preferences indicated low physical activity and high indulgence in fast food. Conclusion Lifestyle choices adopted by Emirati University students may predispose them to disorders such as PCOS. Early detection and management of PCOS coupled with a dynamic awareness campaign for RH can help in improving fertility rates of Emirati women. The study identifies major gaps in knowledge and awareness of RH and PCOS in Emirati women that need to be addressed by creating a culturally congruent heathcare policy with emphasis on education and health promotion. Mandatory PA programs and increasing availability of healthy eating options in campus should be considered by all universities, particularly in Arab regions, for improving lifestyle and preventing metabolic disorders in young students.

Abstract
Objectives Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common metabolic and reproductive disorders among women of reproductive age. In low income and developing countries like India, there are very high chances of developing PCOS due to marked variation between culture, ethnic groups, diet, lifestyle and genetic factors. This study aims to determine the burden of probable PCOS among college going students in Puducherry. Methods A cross sectional study was carried out among students aged 18 years and above in a Government College for Women located in urban Puducherry. A total of 610 students were selected through a cluster random sampling technique. A pretested validated proforma was administered after obtaining informed consent. Results 25.1% (21.8-28.7) of women were having probable PCOS, 18.7% (15.8-22.0) had irregular menstrual history, 8.4% (6.4-10.8) had Hirsutism and 2% (1.8-3.3) had both the symptoms. Regarding food habits, 43.1% were vegetarians and were having probable PCOS and this association was found to be statistically significant. No significant association was found between prevalence of probable PCOS and factors such as higher age, parental income, higher BMI and physical inactivity. Conclusions The present study found a high prevalence of probable PCOS among college going students, especially among study respondents who were obese, physically inactive and vegetarians compared to the counterpart. Earlier detection and proper management of the symptoms can avoid some major co-morbidity in the future. Therefore, screening is an important part in the diagnosis and management of PCOS among adolescent girls.

Abstract
This paper investigates the gendered and racialized discourse on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in India. A complex metabolic, endocrinal and reproductive disorder, PCOS is one of the most common endocrinopathies in women of reproductive age today. Due to an unclear etiology, there is no single clinical definition for PCOS, contributing to a sense of confusion around the syndrome. India has one of the highest rates of PCOS in the world. Medical and social discourses on PCOS suggest the high rates are due to the failures of Westernized lifestyle and diet in women from developing countries. Taking the example of India, I argue that the lack of a clear etiology creates a discursive vacuum and that PCOS in itself is not a gendered and racialized syndrome, but the discourse on it is. Through the figure of the "new Indian woman," I address the socio-political anxieties of nationalism projected onto the female body and suggest that the discourse on PCOS in India is in reaction to a rising nationalist rhetoric. As a syndrome that presents through "masculine" symptoms, PCOS acts a unique entryway into the intersectional issues of gender, race, sexuality, class and national identities. An analysis of the Indian setting might shed light on PCOS discourses that are increasingly relevant globally.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder predominantly affecting women of reproductive age. Clinical manifestations are diverse including hyperandrogenism, anovulation, infertility and increased risk of metabolic diseases besides psychosocial dysfunction. This review provides information on the problem of PCOS in India, its pathophysiology, genetics and an overview of current management options to instigate further research in this field. Prevalence of PCOS in India ranges from 3.7 to 22.5 per cent depending on the population studied and the criteria used for diagnosis. Abnormalities in leptin-adiponectin (adipocyte biology), oxidative stress and autoimmunity are among the mechanisms studied regarding pathogenesis of PCOS. Many candidate gene studies have shown associations with PCOS in various studies. Studies have consistently demonstrated the relationship between the well-known manifestation of hyperandrogenism among Indian PCOS women and the metabolic morbidities including insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and cardiovascular risk. Management of individual components of PCOS can be achieved by medications or surgical methods, though further clarification regarding pathogenesis of PCOS is needed to sharpen our therapeutic armamentarium.

Abstract
PURPOSE Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent hormonal disorder in adolescents; this study seeks to elaborate the main concerns of adolescents with PCOS. DESIGN AND METHODS This qualitative content analysis was conducted on 15 adolescents with PCOS using purposive sampling in 2018. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were held for data collection, and data saturation occurred when no new data were being obtained. Data were analyzed concurrently with data collection. RESULTS Fifteen adolescents with PCOS aged 13-19 years were enrolled into the study. Thirteen were single and two were married. The data analysis led to the extraction of "threats to feminine identity" as the main theme of this research, which was then divided into two categories: 1) concerns about attractiveness, with subcategories including fashion-related stress and the loss of physical beauty 2) concerns about femininity, with subcategories including the underlying issues of worrying about future marriage prospects, anxiety about infertility in the future and stress about menstrual abnormalities. CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, attractiveness and threat to femininity is the main concern of adolescents with PCOS that should be further considered in the management of their treatment. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Understanding the main concerns of adolescents with PCOS can help healthcare professionals better manage this disease in this population subgroup.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous disorder that demonstrates ethnic and regional differences. To assess the phenotypic variability among Indian PCOS women, we evaluated clinical, biochemical and hormonal parameters of these women being followed in two tertiary care institutions located in Delhi and Srinagar. A total of 299 (210 PCOS diagnosed by Rotterdam 2003 criteria and 89 healthy) women underwent estimation of T4, TSH, LH, FSH, total testosterone, prolactin, cortisol, 17OHP, and lipid profile, in addition to post OGTT, C-peptide, insulin, and glucose measurements. Among women with PCOS, mean age, age of menarche, height, systolic, diastolic blood pressure, and serum LH were comparable. PCOS women from Delhi had significantly higher BMI (26.99 ± 5.38 versus 24.77 ± 4.32 kg/m(2); P = 0.01), glucose intolerance (36 versus 10%), insulin resistance as measured by HOMA-IR (4.20 ± 3.39 versus 3.01 ± 2.6; P = 0.006) and QUICKI (0.140 ± 0.013 versus 0.147 ± 0.015; P = 0.03) while PCOS from Srinagar had higher FG score (12.12 ± 3.91 versus 10.32 ± 2.22; P = 0.01) and serum total testosterone levels (0.65 ± 0.69 versus 0.86 ± 0.41 ng/ml; P = 0.01. Two clear phenotypes, i.e. obese hyperinsulinaemic dysglycemic women from Delhi and lean hyperandrogenic women from Srinagar are emerging. This is the first report on North Indian women with PCOS showing phenotypic differences in clinical, biochemical and hormonal parameters despite being in the same region.
