Abstract
The risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been increasingly researched, but the lack of systematic identification and categorization makes it difficult for clinicians to quickly and accurately access and understand all the risk factors, which are categorized in this paper into five categories: Social determinants, lifestyle, checkable/testable risk factors, history of illness and medication, and other factors, which are discussed in a narrative review. Meanwhile, this paper points out the problems of the current research, helps to improve the systematic categorisation and practicality of T2DM risk factors, and provides a professional research basis for clinical practice and industry decision-making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hippuric acid (HA), a host-microbe cometabolite, normally derives from gut microbial catabolism of dietary polyphenols. OBJECTIVES We investigated the potential interplay between dietary polyphenols and gut microbiota on circulating HA concentrations and examined the associations between serum concentrations of HA and cardiometabolic risk markers. METHODS In a 1-y cohort of 754 community-dwelling adults, serum HA and its precursor [benzoic acid (BA)], and fecal microbiota were assayed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing, respectively. Diet, blood pressure, blood glucose, and lipid concentrations were measured twice, 1 y apart. Arterial stiffness [indicated by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index] and liver fat accumulation [indicated by controlled attenuation parameter (CAP)] were measured after 1 y. RESULTS We identified 27 microbial genera whose relative abundance was positively associated with serum HA concentrations (PFDR < 0.05) and constructed a microbial score to reflect the overall HA-producing potential. In multivariate-adjusted linear models, dietary intake of catechins and chlorogenic acids was positively associated with serum HA concentrations among participants with a higher microbial score (β = 0.26, P = 0.03) but not among those with a lower score (β = -0.13, P = 0.30, Pinteraction = 0.03). Participants with higher intake of dietary catechins and chlorogenic acids had lower triglyceride concentrations (Percentage change = -5.9%, P < 0.05). Each 1 μmol/L increase in serum HA, but not in BA, was associated with 5.7%, 1.5%, 1.7%, 1.7%, and 1.7% decrease in triglyceride, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, baPWV, and CAP, respectively (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The gut microbial genera that predicted circulating HA concentrations might modify the association between dietary polyphenol intake and circulating HA concentrations, and elevated serum HA concentrations are favorably associated with multiple cardiometabolic risk markers.

Abstract
AIMS Previous evidence suggests that serum lung cancer biomarkers are associated with inflammatory conditions; however, their relationship with peripheral arterial stiffness remains unclear. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between serum lung cancer biomarkers and peripheral arterial stiffness in middle-aged Chinese adults. METHODS In total, 3878 middle-aged Chinese adults were enrolled in this study. Increased peripheral arterial stiffness was assessed using the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and ankle-brachial index. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the independent effects of serum lung cancer biomarkers on the risk of increased peripheral arterial stiffness. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to assess the diagnostic ability of serum lung cancer biomarkers in distinguishing increased peripheral arterial stiffness. RESULTS Serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), cytokeratin-19 fragment 21-1, and pro-gastrin-releasing peptide were higher in subjects with increased peripheral arterial stiffness than in those without (P<0.05). After adjusting for other risk factors, serum CEA and NSE levels were found to be independently associated with increased peripheral arterial stiffness. The corresponding adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for increased peripheral arterial stiffness in CEA level quartiles were 1.00, 1.57, 2.15, and 6.13. The ORs for increased peripheral arterial stiffness in the quartiles of NSE levels were 1.00, 4.92, 6.65, and 8.01. CONCLUSIONS Increased serum CEA and NSE levels are closely linked to increased peripheral arterial stiffness, and high serum CEA and NSE levels are potential risk markers for peripheral arterial stiffness in middle-aged Chinese adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although emerging evidence suggests that indole derivatives, microbial metabolites of tryptophan, may improve cardiometabolic health, the effective metabolites remain unclear. Also, the gut microbiota that involved in producing indole derivatives are less studied. We identified microbial taxa that can predict serum concentrations of the key indole metabolite indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) at population level and investigated the associations of indole derivatives and IPA-predicting microbial genera with cardiometabolic risk markers. METHODS In a cohort of 318 community-dwelling adults, serum indole metabolites and fecal microbiota (16S ribosomal RNA) were measured at baseline. Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and fasting blood glucose were repeatedly measured at baseline and again after 1 year. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were measured after 1 year. The association between indole derivatives and the 1-year changes in blood lipids and glucose, and association of indole derivatives with baPWV and ABI were investigated using linear regression models. RESULTS Each 1 µmol/L increase in indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) levels was associated with 5.08% (P = 0.046) decrease in LDL-C. IPA levels were inversely associated with baPWV (percentage difference = -1.32%, P = 0.036). Per 1 µmol/L increase in Indole-3-aldehyde (IAld) levels was associated with 1.91% (P = 0.004) decrease in TC and 0.58% (P = 0.019) increase in ABI, but 1.79% decrease in HDL-C with borderline significance (P = 0.050). We identified 18 bacterial genera whose relative abundance was positively associated with serum IPA concentrations (PFDR < 0.05) and constructed a microbial score to reflect the overall IPA-producing potential. This score was inversely associated with baPWV (percentage difference = -0.48%, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that IAA, IPA, IAld, and IPA-predicting microbial score are favorably associated with several cardiometabolic risk markers, although IAld may decrease HDL-C levels.

Abstract
Background: Thrombotic adverse events and disease progression are crucial in Polycythemia Vera (PV), as it stands as the leading cause of mortality. The pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a valuable indicator of arterial aging and often plays a significant independent role in contributing to cardiovascular adverse events (CV-AEs). The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between PWV and critical vascular function parameters, with the goal of identifying new predictive factors of vascular damage and exploring a potential connection with disease progression. Methods: Non-invasive aortic stiffness was assessed through carotid-femoral PWV measurement. PWV was measured using the SphygmoCor device. History of arterial or venous thrombosis (TAEs) or other CV-AEs was collected at baseline. PWV measurements were repeated at baseline, at 6 and at 12 months. Results: The study involved 28 PV patients aged 27 to 77 years, with 57.1% being male. Fourteen patients (50%) reported a high-risk thrombotic score at diagnosis, and 60.7% had at least one comorbidity. Multivariable regression models showed that hemoglobin levels were independently associated with PWV (β: 0.68, SE 0.24, p < 0.01). During the follow-up period (median duration 21.3 months, range 6-33), a total of 13 events were documented. Specifically, two patients exhibited a loss of response to treatment, four patients presented an increase in spleen diameters, three patients displayed an escalation of systemic symptoms, and three patients had a clear progression to secondary myelofibrosis. PWV (per 1 m/s: OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.00-2.91, p = 0.047) and leukocyte count (per 1 × 103/μL: OR 1.47, 95% CI: 1.04-2.09, p = 0.043) were significant predictors of events, independently of waist circumference, blood pressure, treatment, and hematocrit. Conclusions: PWV has demonstrated its potential as an effective tool for monitoring PV patients. It stands as a clinical parameter that can predict the risk of progression in PV patients. Further investigation is essential to fully explore this potential. If successful, it could offer clinicians a valuable resource for effectively managing PV patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The white blood cell count to mean platelet volume ratio (WMR) is considered a promising inflammatory marker, and its recognition is increasing. Inflammation is closely related to metabolic diseases such as diabetes and its complications. However, there are currently no reports on the correlation between WMR and type 2 diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This study aims to explore the correlation between WMR and DPN in type 2 diabetes patients. By understanding this association, we hope to provide a theoretical basis for preventing DPN through the improvement of inflammatory responses. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving 2515 patients with T2DM. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the associations between WMR and DPN. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) was employed to evaluate the predictive efficacy of WMR for DPN. RESULTS Patients in higher WMR quartiles exhibited increased presence of DPN. Additionally, WMR remained significantly associated with a higher odds ratio (OR) of DPN (OR 4.777, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.296-17.610, P < 0.05) after multivariate adjustment. Moreover, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that the optimal cutoff value for WMR in predicting DPN presence was 0.5395 (sensitivity: 65.40%; specificity: 41.80%; and area under the curve [AUC]: 0.540). CONCLUSIONS In patients with T2DM, WMR was significantly increased in DPN and independently associated with an increased risk of DPN presence in Chinese patients. This suggests that WMR may serve as a useful and reliable biomarker of DPN, highlighting the importance of paying more attention to T2DM patients with high WMR to further prevent and reduce the development of DPN and related unfavorable health outcomes.

Abstract
Noise pollution has grown to be a major public health issue worldwide. We sought to profile serum metabolite expression changes related to occupational noise exposure by untargeted metabolomics, as well as to evaluate the potential roles of serum metabolites in occupational noise-associated arterial stiffness (AS). Our study involved 30 noise-exposed industrial personnel (Lipo group) and 30 noise-free controls (Blank group). The untargeted metabolomic analysis was performed by employing a UPLC-HRMS. The associations of occupational noise and significant differential metabolites (between Blank/Lipo groups) with AS were evaluated using multivariable-adjusted generalized linear models. We performed the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis to further screen for AS's risk metabolites. We explored 177 metabolites across 21 categories significantly differentially expressed between Blank/Lipo groups, and these metabolites were enriched in 20 metabolic pathways. Moreover, 15 metabolites in 4 classes (including food, glycerophosphocholine, sphingomyelin [SM] and triacylglycerols [TAG]) were adversely associated with AS (all P < 0.05). Meanwhile, five metabolites (homostachydrine, phosphatidylcholine (PC) (32:1e), PC (38:6p), SM (d41:2) and TAG (45:1) have been proven to be useful predictors of AS prevalence. However, none of these 15 metabolites were found to have a mediating influence on occupational noise-induced AS. Our study reveals specific metabolic changes caused by occupational noise exposure, and several metabolites may have protective effects on AS. However, the roles of serum metabolites in noise-AS association remain to be validated in future studies.

Abstract
Background and aims Arterial stiffness (AS), quantified by pulse wave velocity (PWV), arises due to impaired arterial elastic tissue and smooth muscle dysfunction. We aimed to examine the longitudinal association of genetic, lipid and inflammation biomarkers with PWV and how these associations may change with aging. Materials and methods We utilized genotype and four time-point biomarker data from the SardiNIA cohort [n = 6,301; mean baseline age 43.3 (SD 17.3); 58% females]. To investigate the association of PWV with genetic variants, lipid, and inflammation biomarkers, we employed linear mixed modeling, using age as the time scale. Biomarkers exhibiting significant longitudinal associations were categorized into tertiles and individuals within the second tertile or those with heterozygous alleles were excluded, leaving a cohort of 2,000 individuals. This cohort was further divided into four risk groups: low genetic and low biomarker (L-L), low genetic and high biomarker (L-H), high genetic and low biomarker (H-L), and high genetic and high biomarker risk (H-H). Subsequent analyses focused on these risk groups to assess their association to PWV with time. Results Using the complete dataset, we found a significant longitudinal association of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), fibrinogen (FGN), and total white blood cell count (TWBC) with PWV, all with p < 3.33 × 10-3. After grouping, individuals with homogeneous risk alleles of SNP rs3742207 and high baseline TG levels (H-H group) exhibited a 1.39-fold higher PWV (m/s) (95% CI, 1.17-1.64, p = 1.21 × 10-4) compared to the L-L group. Similarly, individuals in the H-H group of rs3742207-TWBC combination showed 1.75 times higher PWV (95% CI, 1.48-0.2.07, p = 1.01 × 10-10) compared to the L-L group. Similar patterns were observed for groups based on SNP rs7152623-TWBC risk. Furthermore, these associations became more pronounced with increasing age (p < 3.33 × 10-3). Conclusion The longitudinal association of TG and TWBC biomarkers with PWV varied by SNPs rs3742207 and rs7152623 genotype. Further studies are warranted to investigate the function of genetics, lipids, and inflammation biomarkers on PWV change.

Abstract
Background Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) has been reported to be associated with diabetes. We aimed to assess possible links between SII and diabetes. Methods Data were obtained from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. After removing missing data for SII and diabetes, we examined patients older than 20 years. Simultaneously, the relationship between SII and diabetes was examined using weighted multivariate regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and smooth curve fitting. Results There were 7877 subjects in this study, the average SII was 524.91 ± 358.90, and the prevalence of diabetes was 16.07%. Weighted multivariate regression analysis found that SII was positively associated with diabetes, and in model 3, this positive association remained stable (OR = 1.04; 95% CI: 1.02-1.06; p = 0.0006), indicating that each additional unit of SII, the possibility of having diabetes increased by 4%. Gender, age, BMI, regular exercise, high blood pressure, and smoking did not significantly affect this positive link, according to the interaction test (p for trend>0.05). Discussion Additional prospective studies are required to examine the precise connection between higher SII levels and diabetes, which may be associated with higher SII levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Arterial stiffness and sarcopenia are commonly seen in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and both are age-related diseases. However, few studies have addressed the causal relationship between age, arterial stiffness, and sarcopenia, especially in patients with T2DM. This study is aimed at investigating the relationship among age, arterial stiffness, and sarcopenia in patients with T2DM. METHODS AND RESULTS This cross-sectional study enrolled 557 inpatients with diabetes at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, China, between June 2020 and July 2021. Patients who were diagnosed with T2DM and underwent examination of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, handgrip strength, 6-meter walk speed, and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV, a recognized indicator of arterial stiffness) were enrolled. A total of 447 patients were included. A dose-dependent relationship was found between age and sarcopenia. We also found a dose-dependent relationship between age and baPWV. Similarly, significant dose-dependent relationships were found across baPWV tertiles with higher prevalence of sarcopenia. Then, a mediation analysis was performed to explore the mediation effect of arterial stiffness on age-associated sarcopenia. We found that the prevalence of sarcopenia increased by 0.0115 (95% CI, 0.0028-0.0239) per 1 year increase in age by the mediation effect of baPWV and that the direct effect of aging on sarcopenia was 0.0441 (95% CI, 0.0101-0.0909) per 1 year older. baPWV mediated 20.5% of the positive relationship between increased age and the prevalence of sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS Elevated baPWV partially mediates the association of age and sarcopenia among patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most common blood tests requested by clinicians and evaluates the total numbers and characteristics of cell components in the blood. Recently, many investigations have suggested that the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), arteriosclerosis, type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and metabolic syndrome can be predicted using CBC components. This review introduces that white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are useful markers to predict CVD and metabolic diseases. Furthermore, we would like to support various uses of CBC by organizing pathophysiology that can explain the relationship between CBC components and diseases.

Abstract
Long-term noise exposure is reported to damage cardiovascular system, but the relationship between occupational noise exposure and arterial stiffness (AS) and the underlying mechanism is still unclear. We aimed to investigate the association of occupational noise exposure with arterial stiffness (AS), and further explore the mediation roles of microRNAs (miRNAs). A total of 838 workers were recruited from two companies in Wuhan, Hubei, China. Cumulative occupational noise exposure (CNE) was assessed through noise level of job title and work years in occupational noise. The AS for the participants were evaluated using brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) measured by an oscillometric device. Each 1-unit increase in CNE levels was significantly associated with a 0.002 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.001-0.003) unit increase in ln-transformed values of baPWV. In the sex-specific analysis, the association was significant in males (β = 0.002, 95%CI = 0.001-0.003). Meanwhile, the risk of bilateral hearing loss at high frequency was significantly higher in the high-exposed group than non-exposed group (OR = 1.895, 95%CI = 1.024-3.508), and participants with bilateral hearing loss at high frequency had a significantly higher level of ln-transformed baPWV (β = 0.032, 95%CI = 0.003-0.061). Occupational noise exposure and AS were both negatively associated with plasma miR-92a-3p and miR-21-5p, and the two miRNAs mediated 15.0% and 16.8% of the association of occupational noise with AS (P < 0.05). Our findings suggest that occupational noise exposure is positively associated with AS, and plasma miR-92a-3p and miR-21-5p may partly mediate such association.

Abstract
Phthalates exposure has been reported to be linked with arterial stiffness. However, the biological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We conducted a panel study using 338 paired urine-blood samples by repeated measurements of 123 adults across 3 seasons to assess the potential mediating role of plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) in the association of phthalates exposure with arterial stiffness. We measured 10 urinary phthalate metabolites by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and 5 candidate arterial stiffness-related miRNAs (miR-146a, miR-222, miR-125b, miR-126, and miR-21) in plasma by real-time PCR. Arterial stiffness parameters including brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were determined in health examinations during each visit. Linear mixed-effect (LME) models revealed that mono-methyl phthalate (MMP), mono-iso-butyl phthalate (MiBP), mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP), mono-n-octyl phthalate (MOP), and mono-(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) phthalate (MECPP) were significantly associated with one or more of the 5 plasma miRNAs (all PFDR < 0.05). Based on weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, we found positive associations of phthalate metabolites mixture with miR-146a, miR-125b, and miR-222, and individual MMP and MBP were the major contributors. Additionally, miR-146a was inversely related to ABI. Mediation analysis further indicated that miR-146a mediated 31.6% and 21.3% of the relationships of MMP and MiBP with ABI, respectively. Our findings suggested that certain phthalates exposure was related to plasma miRNAs alterations in a dose-response manner and miR-146a might partly mediate phthalate-associated ABI reduction.

Abstract
The association between white blood cell (WBC) count and arterial stiffness in patients with hypertension is not well-documented. We aimed to examine the relationships of total WBC count with arterial stiffness and risk of macrovascular damage in hypertensive patients. A total of 631 hypertensive adults (mean age: 65.6 years) were included in the present study. Arterial stiffness was determined by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI). Macrovascular damage was defined as baPWV >1.8 m/s or ABI <.9. The dose-response associations were assessed by multivariate linear or logistic regression models. After multivariate adjustments, we observed a dose-response relationship between increasing total WBC count and arterial stiffness. Participants in the highest tertile of total WBC count showed a significantly elevated baPWV (β = .088; 95% CI: .021, .154; Ptrend = .010) and reduced ABI (β = -.027; 95% CI: -.046, -.008; Ptrend = .005), as compared with those in the first tertile. The association was similar in different subgroups. In addition, elevated total WBC count was related to a greater risk of macrovascular damage, as indicated by baPWV >1.8 m/s (OR = 1.86; 95% CI: 1.15, 2.99, comparing the extreme tertiles). Our data suggest that elevated total WBC count was related to arterial stiffness among individuals with hypertension.

Abstract
Background Metabolic dysfunction is known to be associated with arterial stiffness. However, the risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes due to arterial stiffness and the potential mechanism remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the association of arterial stiffness with the risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes, and determine whether this association is mediated by liver fat. Methods A prospective study was conducted with 4,139 Chinese adults who were metabolically healthy at baseline. Arterial stiffness was measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Obesity was defined as body mass index ≥25 kg/m2. The primary outcomes were incident metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Results During a median follow-up of 4.4 years, 1,022 (24.7%) and 354 (9.5%) participants developed metabolic syndrome and diabetes, respectively. Compared with those in the lowest quartile of baPWV, participants in the highest quartile had 85 and 91% higher risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes [risk ratio (RR) 1.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.41, 2.42 for metabolic syndrome; RR 1.91, 95% CI 1.16, 3.15 for diabetes]. Mediation analyses indicated that fatty liver significantly mediated the association of arterial stiffness with metabolic syndrome and diabetes risk. Specifically, 18.4% of metabolic syndrome and 12.6% of diabetes risk due to arterial stiffness were mediated through fatty liver. Conclusions Arterial stiffness was associated with higher risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in individuals with obesity. This association may be partially mediated by fatty liver.

Abstract
The link between phthalates exposure and arterial stiffness in adults remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations of urinary phthalate metabolites with arterial stiffness in a longitudinal panel study involving 3 repeated visits among 127 Chinese adults. Urine samples were collected once a day for 4 consecutive days and 10 urinary phthalate metabolites were measured by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were determined using an oscillometric device (BP-203RPEIII; Omron) in physical examinations during each visit. Linear mixed-effect (LME) models with the adaptive Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) method were applied to assess the associations between urinary phthalate metabolites and arterial stiffness parameters. The odds ratio (OR) for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) was estimated using generalized estimating equations. For ABI, mono-methyl phthalate (MMP) and mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP) at lag 0 day were selected by the adaptive LASSO, whereas no phthalates were selected for baPWV. After adjusting for potential covariates and other metabolites, we found ABI reduction was associated with one-unit increase of ln-transformed urinary MBP at lag 0 day [β = 0.013 (SE = 0.006), P = 0.003)]. Stratified analysis revealed that the inverse association was more evident in males (Pinteraction = 0.025). In addition, we observed a borderline risk of PAD in relation to MBP exposure at lag 0 day (P = 0.06). Our data suggested that environmental exposure to MBP may contribute to arterial stiffness, and the effect seems to be sex-specific.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays a role in occurrence and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Whether peripheral immune cells are involved in major pathological processes including amyloid-β plaques and tau tangles is still controversial. OBJECTIVE We aimed to examine whether peripheral immune cells counts were associated with early changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of AD pathology in cognitively intact older adults. METHODS This study included 738 objective cognitive normal participants from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and Lifestyle (CABLE) database. Group comparisons of peripheral immune cells counts were tested by analysis of covariance. Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the associations of peripheral immune cells counts with CSF AD biomarkers. RESULTS In preclinical AD, peripheral lymphocytes and eosinophils changed dynamically along with disease progression. Consistently, regression analysis showed that lymphocytes and eosinophils were associated with Aβ pathology. There were no interaction effects of peripheral immune cells counts with APOE ɛ4, gender, age, and educate. Eosinophil to lymphocyte ratio were also significantly associated with Aβ-related biomarkers. CONCLUSION Our findings showed the relationship between peripheral immune cells and Aβ pathological biomarkers, which indicated that peripheral immune might play a role in progression of AD pathology.

Abstract
Introduction Low albumin levels, high levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and high white blood cell count were risk factors for changes in arterial intima-media thickness (IMT). Femoral artery IMT damages were one of the common peripheral artery type 2 diabetes. This study was conducted to determine the association between femoral artery IMT and plasma albumin, hs-CRP levels, and white blood cell count in newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (nT2D). Materials and Methods From January 2015 to May 2020, 306 patients with nT2D were recruited for this cross-sectional descriptive study at Vietnam's National Endocrinology Hospital. We measured IMT by Doppler ultrasound. Results There was a statistically significant difference in albumin, hs-CRP levels, hs-CRP-to-albumin ratio, and white blood cell counts between three different IMT groups namely normal IMT, thick IMT, and atherosclerosis (p = 0.003, p = 0.001, p = 0.001 and p = 0.049, respectively). In the multivariate linear regression analysis, white blood cell count, and hs-CRP levels showed a significantly positive correlation to IMT (standardized B and p of 0.17, 0.015 and 0.163, 0.024, respectively), but albumin levels were a significantly negative correlation to IMT (standardized B = -0.151, p = 0.029). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that albumin (OR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.65-0.90, p = 0.018), hs-CRP (OR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.01-1.18, p = 0.026), and white blood cell count (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.03-1.81, p = 0.033) had correlation to atherosclerosis of femoral artery. Conclusion Reduced plasma albumin, elevated hs-CRP, and white blood cell count associated with IMT increased the odds for atherosclerosis of femoral artery among nT2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies proposed that chronic inflammation in diabetes has a role in abnormal collagen production and elastin degradation, which promotes arterial stiffness. Monocyte-to-High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) is a simple measurement associated with inflammation and oxidative stress. However, little is known about the relationship of MHR with arterial stiffness. This study aimed to determine the association of MHR with arterial stiffness in patients with diabetes. METHODS A total of 81 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Arterial stiffness factor in this study was Cardio Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI). We analyzed complete blood count and lipid profile in all participants, then performed statistical analysis to determine the relationship between MHR and CAVI. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to estimate the cut-off values of MHR to predict CAVI ≥ 9. RESULTS Median of MHR in this study was 11.91 with the mean of CAVI was 8.13 ± 0.93. Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between MHR and CAVI (ρ = 0.239, p = 0.031). Multivariate analysis showed the independent association of MHR to arterial stiffness (β = 0.361, 95% CI 0.023-0.093) and to CAVI ≥ 9 (OR 1.181, 95% CI 1.047-1.332). The cut-off values of MHR for predicting CAVI ≥ 9 were identified as ≥ 13 (OR 3.289, 95% CI 1.036-10.441). CONCLUSION MHR is associated with CAVI in patients with diabetes, irrespective of various potential confounders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We aimed to investigate the individual and combined effects of age-specific and sex-specific pulse pressure (PP) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) on the incidence of new-onset diabetes mellitus. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Participants in the Kailuan study cohort who were ≥20 years old, participated in follow-up assessments and underwent baPWV measurements in 2010-2011, 2012-2013, and 2014-2015 were studied. The participants were allocated to four groups according to their PP and baPWV status, each categorized as high or normal, according to age-specific and sex-specific median values. Cox proportional hazards models were used to explore the individual and combined effects of PP and baPWV on the incidence of diabetes mellitus. RESULTS There were 18 619 participants who were followed for 4.27±1.91 years. A total of 877 new cases of diabetes were identified, and the incidence density was 11.03/1000 per year. Using the normal PP and normal baPWV group as the reference group, the multivariable-adjusted HRs and 95% CIs for diabetes mellitus in the high PP and high baPWV groups were 1.08 (0.93 to 1.25) and 1.64 (1.41 to 1.90), respectively. Compared with the normal PP/baPWV group, the HR and 95% CI for diabetes in the normal PP/high baPWV, the high PP/normal baPWV, and high PP/baPWV groups were 1.66 (1.35 to 2.05), 1.09 (0.86 to 1.37), and 1.74 (1.43 to 2.13), respectively. CONCLUSIONS High baPWV was independently associated with a higher risk of diabetes mellitus, and individuals with both high baPWV and high PP were at a still higher risk of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
AIMS Chronic low-grade inflammation is closely linked to the development and progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Since inflammatory markers tend to be chronically elevated in current smokers, we examined the association of inflammatory markers, including leukocyte counts and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, with incidence risk of T2DM in non-smoking adults. METHODS 5568 non-smoking participants aged 40-69 years without diabetes at baseline were selected from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES), a large prospective cohort study. The hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident T2DM according to leukocyte and CRP quartiles, respectively, were calculated using multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS During the 12-year follow-up period, T2DM developed in 1030 subjects (18.5%, 1030/5568), with an incidence rate of 3.1-4.9 per 2 years. The cumulative incidence of T2DM increased proportionally with increasing leukocyte and CRP quartiles. Compared with the reference first quartile, the HRs of incident T2DM in the second, third, and fourth quartiles of leukocyte counts and third and fourth quartiles of CRP levels increased in a dose-dependent manner after adjusting for potentially confounding variables. CONCLUSIONS Leukocyte counts and CRP levels are predictors of incident T2DM independent of tobacco smoking.

Abstract
Chronic exposure to metals has been linked to arterial stiffness. However, the effects of exposure to multiple metals on arterial stiffness have rarely been studied. We aimed to investigate the associations of 23 urinary metals with arterial stiffness in a panel study of 127 Chinese adults with 3 repeated visits. Urinary metal measurements were conducted once a day for 4 consecutive days of each visit. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were measured in health examinations during each visit. Linear mixed models, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) penalized regression models, and generalized linear models were applied to investigate the associations between multiple metals and arterial stiffness parameters. The odds ratio (OR) for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) was examined using generalized estimating equations. After adjusting for potential covariates and other metals, we found ABI reductions were associated with one unit increase in 4-day average (lag 0-3 day) of ln-transformed urinary titanium (Ti) [β = -0.019 (SE = 0.010), P = 0.045], and cobalt (Co) [β = -0.012 (SE = 0.006), P = 0.048], whereas no significant associations were observed for baPWV at different lag days. Stratified analyses revealed that urinary Ti was inversely related to ABI among never-smokers or in the winter. In addition, the current day or 4-day average of ln-transformed urinary Ti was associated with an increased OR of 1.94 (95% CI: 1.28, 2.92) or 3.30 (95% CI: 1.64, 6.63) for PAD, respectively. Our study showed significant associations of exposure to Ti and Co with arterial stiffness. Particularly, Ti may increase the risk of PAD.
