Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to construct and validate a nomogram model that predicts the remission of migraine attacks by screening factors that affect the prognosis of migraine patients with patent foramen ovale (PFO) after closure. METHOD Retrospective analysis was conducted in migraine patients with PFO who underwent PFO closure in the Department of Cardiology of Jiangsu Province Hospital from September 2020 to April 2023. Based on the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) scores from the 1-year follow-up after PFO closure, all patients who met the inclusion criteria were categorized into a remission group and a non-remission group. The primary efficacy endpoint was remission of migraine headache. After collecting clinical data, transcranial doppler sonography (TCD) results and MIDAS scores, LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regression and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to filter variables predictive to migraine remission and construct the nomogram model. The Nomogram's accuracy and consistency were respectively assessed through Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration curves. Additionally, an analysis of decision curves (DCA) was conducted to evaluate the clinical utility of this newly developed model. RESULT A total of 241 consecutive patients were included in the study. The remission group included 21 males and 93 females, with a median age of 39 (30.25,50) years. The non-remission group included 26 males and 101 females, with a median age of 35 (25.5,47.5) years. All Patients were randomly divided into a training cohort and a validation cohort. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that 5 independent predictors, including MIDAS before closure (p = 0.0002), mitigating factors (p = 0.0057), number of attacks/month (p = 0.0058), TCD (p = 0.0093) and Platelet Crit (PCT) (p = 0.0351), played a significant role in the prediction of remission of migraine patients with PFO after closure. Based on these independent predictors, the predictive nomogram model of migraine remission in PFO patients was constructed. The application of the nomogram in the training cohort exhibited good discrimination (area under the ROC curve was 0.7763[95% CI 0.7108-0.8418]), which was confirmed in the validation cohort (AUC was 0.704[95% CI 0.5533-0.8547]). The calibration curve showed that the nomogram model demonstrated good calibration performance. Additionally, the decision curve analysis indicated the clinical utility of the nomogram model. CONCLUSION The construction of the nomogram model had a considerable predictive accuracy for migraine remission in patients after PFO closure, which may provide constructive guidance for clinical decision making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypercoagulability has been documented in cats with cardiac disease. However, hemostatic parameters, including viscoelastic coagulation monitoring (VCM) have not been reported in cats with arterial thromboembolism (ATE). HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Compare VCM parameters in cats with acute cardiogenic ATE and in control cats. ANIMALS Sixteen cats with ATE and 30 control cats. METHODS Multicenter university-based prospective study. Cardiogenic ATE was diagnosed based on physical examination and by ultrasonographically-diagnosed left atrial enlargement. Viscoelastic coagulation monitor analysis, CBC, serum biochemistry profile and coagulation profile were performed at admission in cats with ATE. Analysis from healthy control cats was performed using blood collected by direct venipuncture. Our objective was comparison of VCM parameters clot time (CT), clot formation time (CFT), alpha angle (Angle), maximum clot formation (MCF), amplitude at 10 and 20 minutes (A10 and A20, respectively) and clot lysis index at 30 and 45 minutes (LI30 and LI45, respectively) between ATE and control cats. RESULTS Cats with ATE had a decreased angle compared to control cats, with a median (range) of 43° (30-48°) compared to 47° (14-59°; P = .01). The parameters A10, A20 and MCF were decreased in ATE cats compared to control cats with a median (range) of 19 units (8-32) compared to 22 units (6-38), 24.5 units (11-40) compared to 29 units (10-47) and 29.5 units (13-44) compared to 33.5 units (14-53), respectively (P = .01, .01 and .01, respectively). The parameters CT, CFT, LI30 and LI45 were similar between groups (P = .22, .09, .62 and .34, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Cats with cardiogenic ATE cats have VCM parameters consistent with hypocoagulability compared with healthy cats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Late-onset sepsis (LOS) is a substantial contributor to morbidity and mortality among neonates. The use of nonculture-based tools for early diagnosis is an area of active investigation. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of serum interleukin-27 (IL-27) and mean platelet volume (MPV) in full-term neonates with LOS. STUDY DESIGN In this single-center, cross-sectional study, 90 full-term newborns were assigned to two equal-matched groups as follows: (1) culture-proven sepsis and (2) control groups. Clinical data and laboratory findings as complete blood pictures, including MPV, highly sensitive C-reactive protein, and blood culture results, were recorded. Moreover, IL-27 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS IL-27 levels (median = 4,364 pg/mL) and MPV (mean = 12.02 ± 1.54 FL) were significantly higher in the culture-proven sepsis group than in the control group (p < 0.001). For IL-27, the optimum cut-off value for the diagnosis of LOS was 283.8 pg/mL with sensitivity and specificity of 97.8 and 100%, respectively. For MPV, the optimum cut-off value was 11.6 FL, with diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 77.8 and 97.8%, respectively. CONCLUSION IL-27 and MPV are promising markers for the diagnosis of LOS in full-term neonates. The diagnostic performance of IL-27 was superior to MPV. Abstract
BACKGROUND Heatstroke (HS), associated with the early activation of the coagulation system and frequently presenting with thrombocytopenia, poses a significant healthcare challenge. Understanding the relationship of nadir platelet count (PLT) within 24 h for adverse outcomes in HS patients is crucial for optimizing management strategies. METHODS This retrospective cohort study, conducted in six tertiary care hospitals, involved patients diagnosed with HS and admitted to the emergency departments. The primary and secondary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and various acute complications, respectively, with logistic regression models utilized for assessing associations between nadir PLT and outcomes. The PLT count change curve was described using a generalized additive mixed model (GAMM), with additional analyses involving body temperature (BT) at 2 h also conducted. RESULTS Of the 152 patients included, 19 (12.5%) died in-hospital. The median nadir PLT within 24 h was 99.5 (58.8-145.0)*10^9/L. Notably, as a continuous variable (10*10^9/L), nadir PLT was significantly associated with in-hospital mortality (OR 0.76; 95% CI 0.64-0.91; P = 0.003) and other adverse outcomes like acute kidney and liver injury, even after adjustment for confounders. GAMM revealed a more rapid and significant PLT decline in the non-survival group over 24 h, with differential PLT dynamics also observed based on BT at 2 h. CONCLUSIONS Nadir PLT within 24 h were tied to in-hospital mortality and various adverse outcomes in HS patients. Early effective cooling measures demonstrated a positive impact on these associations, underscoring their importance in patient management.

Abstract
Investigating the correlation between blood cadmium levels, platelet characteristics, and susceptibility to coronary heart disease (CHD). Utilized NHANES 2005-2018 data with covariates such as age, sex, race, marital status, and socio-economic status. Blood cadmium served as the independent variable, while platelet count (PC) and mean platelet volume (MPV) were dependent variables. The average age of the participants was 68.77 ± 11.03 years, and 67.4% of them were male. The mean values for WBC, MPV, PC, and blood cadmium were 7.53 ± 3.36 × 103 cells/µL, 11.33 ± 0.27fL, 57.61 ± 5.34 × 103 cells/µL, and 2.58 ± 0.61 µg/L, respectively. Adjusting for other variables revealed increased MPV and PC with rising blood cadmium levels in cardiac patients, indicating a higher risk of CHD in those with elevated blood cadmium. The average age of the participants was 68.77 ± 11.03 years, and 67.4% of them were male. The mean values for WBC, MPV, PC, and blood cadmium were 7.53 ± 3.36 × 103 cells/µL, 11.33 ± 0.27fL, 57.61 ± 5.34 × 103 cells/µL, and 2.58 ± 0.61 µg/L, respectively. Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to discuss the causal relationship between physical activity and platelet traits. Methods: A dataset from a large-scale European physical activity and platelet traits was collected by using Mendelian randomization of the study. For the analysis, the inverse variance weighting method, weighted median and MR-Egger were used to estimate causal effects. The sensitivity analyses were also performed using Cochran's Q test, funnel plots and Leave-one-out analysis. Results: Light DIY, other exercises, strenuous sports, walking for pleasure were significantly associated with a decrease in platelet crit. But none of the heavy /light DIY was associated with increase in platelet crit. Other exercises and strenuous sports were associated with decrease in platelet count. Conclusion: Some types of physical activity have a causal relationship with platelet crit and platelet count. However, the types of physical activity we studied have not supported a causal relationship with mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width.

Abstract
The significant biological and functional differences between small and large platelets suggested by recent studies could have profound implications for transfusion medicine. However, investigating the relationship between platelet size and function is challenging because separating platelets by size without affecting their properties is difficult. A standard approach is centrifugation, but it inevitably leads to premature activation and aggregation of separated platelets. This paper describes the development and validation of a microfluidic device based on controlled incremental filtration (CIF) for separating platelets by size without the cell damage and usability limitations associated with centrifugation. Platelet samples derived from whole blood were used to evaluate the dependence of the CIF device separation performance on design parameters and flow rate, and to compare the properties of PLT fractions generated by the CIF device with those produced using a centrifugation protocol in a split-sample study. This was accomplished by quantifying the platelet size distribution, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR) and platelet activation before and after processing for all input and output samples. The 'large platelet' fractions produced by the CIF device and the centrifugation protocol were essentially equivalent (no significant difference in MPV and P-LCR). Platelets in the 'small platelet' fraction produced by the CIF device were significantly smaller than those produced by centrifugation (lower MPV and P-LCR). This was because the CIF 'small platelet' fraction was contaminated by much fewer large platelets (∼2-times lower recovery of >12 fL platelets) and retained the smallest platelets that were discarded by the centrifugation protocol. There was no significant difference in platelet activation between the two methods. However, centrifugation required a substantial amount of additional anticoagulant to prevent platelet aggregation during pelleting. Unlike centrifugation, the CIF device offered continuous, flow-through, single-step processing that did not cause platelet aggregation. Such a capability has the potential to accelerate the basic studies of the relationship between platelet size and function, and ultimately improve transfusion practice, particularly in the pediatric setting, where the need for low-volume, high-quality platelet transfusions is most urgent.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Qi deficiency and blood stasis are identified to be pathological factors of pulmonary fibrosis (PF) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory. Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD) is a traditional Chinese prescription ameliorating Qi deficiency and blood stasis. AIM OF THE STUDY The objective of this study was to investigate the anti-fibrosis effect of BYHWD and the potential molecular mechanism in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bleomycin was used to construct PF rat models. 27 PF rats were randomly divided into three groups based on treatments: model group (saline solution, n = 9), low-dose BYHWD group (3.5 g/kg, n = 9), and high-dose BYHWD group (14.0 g/kg, n = 9). Moreover, 9 normal rats were used as the blank group. The blood viscosity, coagulation indexes (APTT, TT, PT, and FIB), platelet-related parameters (PLT, PDW, MPV, PCT, and PLCR), platelet microparticles (PMPs), and inflammatory factors (IL-2, IL-10, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-17, IFN-γ, TNF-α, PAC-1, HMGB1, NF-κB, and TF) were determined. The lung tissue samples of rats were observed after hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. The full component analysis of the BYHWD extract was performed using the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method. The signaling pathway included into the study was selected on the basis of bioinformatics analysis and the results of the phytochemical analysis. The expression levels of genes and proteins involved in the selected signaling pathway were detected. RESULTS Compared to the blank group, the whole blood viscosity, PLR, PDW, MPV, PCT, PLCR, PMPs, and the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-17, TNF-α, PAC-1, HMGB1, NF-κB, and TF were increased, while the levels of IL-2 and IL-10 were decreased in the model group. Both low-dose BYHWD and high-dose BYHWD reversed these PF-induced effects in spite of the fact that low-dose BYHWD had no significant effect on the level of NF-κB. In addition, BYHWD ameliorated PF-induced inflammation in the rat lung tissue. The phytochemical analysis of the BYHWD extract combined with the bioinformatics analysis suggested that the therapeutical effect of BYHWD on PF was related to the HMGB1/NF-κB pathway, which consisted of NF-κB, IKBKB, ICAM1, VCAM1, HMGB1, and TLR4. Both RT-qPCR and western blot analyses showed that PF induced increases in the expression levels of NF-κB, ICAM1, VCAM1, HMGB1, and TLR4, but a decrease in the expression level of IKBKB. Moreover, both low-dose BYHWD and high-dose BYHWD exerted the opposite effects, and recovered the expression levels of NF-κB, ICAM1, VCAM1, HMGB1, TLR4, and IKBKB, despite the fact that low-dose BYHWD had no effects on the mRNA expression levels of NF-κB or TLR4. CONCLUSIONS In summary, BYHWD alleviated PF-induced blood stasis, platelet activation, and inflammation in the rats. Our study suggested BYHWD had a therapeutic effect on PF and was a good alternative for the complementary therapy of PF, and the potential molecular mechanism was modulation of HMGB1/NF-κB signaling pathway, and it needs further study.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this research was to explore how psoriasis is linked to the occurrence of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in diabetic population. METHODS This was a retrospective, nationwide, population-based cohort study that examined medical records from January 2009 to December 2012. The study focused on patients ≥20 years of age who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The authors compared the incidence rate of RVO between a group of patients with psoriasis and a group of patients without psoriasis until December 2018 in all subjects. RESULTS Of the 2,745,689 Type 2 DM patients, 23,725 patients were classified in the psoriasis group and the rest of the 2,547,121 individuals in the control group. A total of 497 RVO cases occurred in the psoriasis group (3.14/1,000 person-years) and 42,388 RVO cases in the control group (2.44/1,000 person-years). According to multivariable Cox proportional hazard models, individuals with psoriasis had a significantly greater risk of developing RVO compared with control subjects (hazard ratio: 1.216, 95% confidence interval: 1.11-1.33) after adjustments for covariates. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that psoriasis was an independent risk factor for developing RVO in DM patients. Therefore, physicians need to be vigilant for the occurrence of RVO in DM patients who also have psoriasis.

Abstract
To evaluate platelet indices, platelet to lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio as prognostic and risk factors in patients with coronary artery disease Introduction: cardiovascular diseases have 12 million deaths annually which is one of the commonest causes of death globally. Platelet parameters like Mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and WBC parameters like Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio(PLR) have recently been emerging as a new prognostic marker in number of coronary artery disease (CAD) with limited studies to explore their utility. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES this study aimed to evaluate MPV, P-LCR, PDW, PLR, NLR and GRACE risk score in CAD patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS this descriptive cross-sectional study was done in 330 cases of CAD and 200 healthy controls were studied.MPV, platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR), PLR, NLR and PDW of patients were analyzed. RESULTS In our study, 245 were males and 85 were females. Mean PDW, MPV, Mean PLCR, Mean NLR was significantly higher in CAD cases as compared to controls (p value < 0.05). Mean PLR was not significantly different in CAD cases and controls. MPV was more associated risk predictor of CAD (8.98 times) followed by NLR (2.79 times), PDW (1.53 times) and PLCR (1.02 times). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION platelet indices, NLR and PLR are simple cost effective parameters and in future these might be useful adjuvant tests in conjunction with conventional biochemical cardiac markers in early prediction of risk of CAD in patients admitted to hospital and can guide clinicians in assessing the prognosis on short and long term follow up of these patients in terms of morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Introduction Platelet indices (PIs) are hematological parameters that indicate the number, morphology, and activation of platelets. Although some clinical trials suggest an association between PIs and the risk of stroke, the lack of robust evidence is attributed to confounding effects and reverse causation. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the association between PIs and stroke risk through Mendelian randomization (MR) while exploring the mediating effect of blood pressure in this association. Methods We identified genetic variants associated with PIs, including platelet count (PLT), platelet distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet crit (PCT), in the UK Biobank (n = 350,474). Relevant genome-wide association studies were utilized to gather summary statistics pertaining to the traits of interest. We primarily used the inverse-variance weighted analysis to obtain estimates for individual causal power. Result We observed a positive correlation between genetically predicted increases in PCT levels with the stroke onset [PCT: OR (95%CI) = 1.113(1.047, 1.183), p < 0.001]. However, no significant causal relationship was found between PLT, PDW, and MPV and the risk of stroke [PLT: OR (95%CI) = 1.037(0.979, 1.098), p = 0.221; PDW: OR (95%CI) = 0.973(0.923, 1.024), p = 0.294; MPV: OR (95%CI) = 0.990(0.945, 1.038), p = 0.675]. Multivariable MR analyses and mediation analysis found that the proportion mediated by systolic blood pressure (SBP) is 23.71% [95%CI (10.85-33.31%)] and the proportion mediated by diastolic blood pressure (DBP) is 28.09% [95%CI (12.92-39.63%)]. Conclusion This large MR study presents evidence for the potential causal relationship between the PCT level and the risk of ischemic stroke, which might be mediated by blood pressure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the role of plateletcrit as a potential biomarker for disease activity and treatment response in Takayasu arteritis (TAK). METHODS Totally, 215 newly diagnosed TAK patients were consecutively enrolled. Demographic data, clinical manifestations, laboratory and imaging examinations, and treatment strategy were recorded at baseline and at each visit during the 6-month treatment period. Normal plateletcrit (0.1%-0.4%) and hyper-plateletcrit (>0.4%) observed at baseline were used as group criteria. RESULTS At baseline, the overall plateletcrit was 0.32 (0.24-0.38)%, with a normal and high level observed in 172 (80.00%) and 43 (20.00%) patients, respectively. Baseline plateletcrit was significantly higher in patients with active disease and associated with inflammatory biomarkers, including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin (IL)-6 (all p < .01). At 6 months, complete remission was achieved in 171 (79.53%) patients, and a significant decrease in plateletcrit was observed in these cases (p < .01). Patients with a normal baseline plateletcrit were more likely to achieve complete remission compared to those with a high baseline plateletcrit (HR = 4.65, 95% CI: 2.38-19.08, p < .01). In addition, ESR (p = .01) and IL-6 (p = .02) levels were still higher in patients with a high baseline plateletcrit at 6 months. Progression of vascular lesions was indicated in 18 (8.37%) patients at 6 months, and these patients also had significantly higher baseline plateletcrit (p = .03). CONCLUSION Plateletcrit levels were positively related to disease activity and inflammatory index in TAK. Importantly, patients with high baseline plateletcrit levels may show a worse treatment response at 6 months.

Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction in piglets has been a problem in the pig industry due to genetic selection based on hyperprolificacy. This has led to an increase in the number of underweight piglets and a worsening of the survival rate. The goal of this study was to enhance the knowledge of differences between normal and IUGR piglets a few hours after birth in terms of haematological variables, biochemical parameters, and immunoglobulin levels. Two groups of 20 piglets each were assessed. The control group (N) was made up of piglets with weights greater than 1500 g, and the IUGR group consisted of piglets weighing 500-1000 g and with at least two IUGR features. Blood samples were collected 72 h after birth for analysis of the red and white blood cell parameters, reticulocyte indices, platelet indices, biochemical parameters, and immunoglobulin levels. Alterations in red blood cells and reticulocytes, a lower lymphocyte count, hyperinsulinemia, and high oxidative stress were observed in IUGR piglets (p < 0.05). In contrast, differences were not observed (p > 0.05) in the serum immunoglobulin level. It can be concluded that the haematological and biochemical differences in IUGR piglets with respect to normal-weight piglets are present at birth indicating possible alterations in immunity, metabolism, and redox status; therefore, IUGR piglets could be more vulnerable to illness and future disorders, such as metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess storage lesion development, platelet function, and bacterial growth in canine platelet concentrates (PCs) stored in a platelet additive solution (PAS) or a plasma control at 4°C for 21 days. DESIGN Prospective, ex vivo, experimental controlled study. SETTING University veterinary teaching hospital. ANIMALS Ten units of canine PCs collected from blood bank donations. INTERVENTIONS The PCs were separated into 2 bags, 1 containing 100% plasma and the other containing 35% plasma and 65% of a PAS (Plasma-Lyte A), and stored at 4°C for 21 days. At days 0, 7, 14, and 21, PCs were analyzed for the presence of swirling, aggregate formation, platelet counts, platelet indices, glucose, lactate, lactate dehydrogenase, Pvco2 , Pvo2 , aggregation via light aggregometry, activation percentages using flow cytometry, and bacterial growth. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Cold-stored PCs in both PAS and plasma control maintained mean pH >6.8 and mean lactate <9.0 mmol/L over 21 days, with no difference in glucose utilization. Swirl was maintained in both solutions for most days (76/80 combined total samples), with no difference in aggregate formation between solutions. The Pvco2 was higher in plasma on all days (P < 0.001), with no difference in Pvo2 . Platelet indices did not reflect significant storage lesion development in either solution. Lactate dehydrogenase did not differ between solutions but did increase from day 7 to day 21. Mean maximal aggregation percentage was reduced overall but with no significant difference between solutions. The only observed difference in mean activation percentage between solutions was in PAS on day 7, which was significantly higher than plasma (P < 0.05). No bacterial growth occurred during storage. CONCLUSIONS Cold storage in PAS and plasma allowed PCs to be stored for up to 21 days with minimal storage lesion development, maintenance of platelet function, limited platelet activation, and no bacterial growth within stored bags.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this retrospective study the effects of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), mean platelet volume to platelet count ratio (MPV/PC) values as well as C‑reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) levels on the severity and mortality in critically ill child trauma cases were evaluated. METHODS A total of 80 trauma cases aged 31 days to 16 years that were followed-up in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) were included in the study. The data of the patients on the first day of hospitalization (T1), the median day of intensive care admission (T2), and before discharge or exitus (T3) were analyzed. The cases were divided into three groups according to the injury severity score (ISS) as minor, moderate, and severe. RESULTS Of the 80 cases 59 (73.75%) were male and 21 (26.25%) were female. The mean age of all the cases was 54.5 ± 47.8 months, and the mean PICU stay was 7.35 ± 6.64 days. Of the cases 19 (23.75%) due to motor vehicle accidents and 61 (76.25%) due to falling from heights were followed-up. The mortality rate was found to be 13.75% (11 cases). The T1, T2 and T3 NLR, MLR, MPV/PC and PCT values did not differ between the groups. The T1 and T2 CRP levels were higher in the moderate trauma group than in the severe trauma group. Also, ISS and pediatric risk of mortality 3 (PRISM-3) scores were higher while the revised injury severity classification version II (RISC II), RISC II survival and Glasgow coma scale (GCS) scores were lower in the nonsurvivors. While the T3 MLR value was lower in nonsurvival cases, the T3 MPV/PC value was found to be higher. CONCLUSION The NLR, MLR, and MPV/PC values do not predict the severity of the trauma in children. In children with severe trauma, low MLR and high MPV/PC values can be used to predict mortality.

Abstract
Sodium metabisulfite (SMB) is a biocide and antioxidant agent generally used as a preservative in food and beverage industries but can oxidize to harmful sulfite radicals. A standardized Ginkgo biloba (EGb-761) has demonstrated potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which is beneficial for the treatment of diseases that exhibit oxidative stress and inflammation. The present study sought to investigate the putative ameliorative effects of EGb-761 against SMB-induced toxicity in mice. Thirty-two male Swiss white mice were randomized into control, SMB-treated, SMB + EGb-761-treated, and EGb-761-treated groups. EGb-761 (100 mg/kg/day) and SMB (98 mg/kg/day) were administered by gastric gavage for 40 days. Oral administration of EGb-761 restored SMB-induced decrease in body weight and prevented SMB-induced thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis, and anemia. Furthermore, EGb-761-treatment protected against SMB-induced liver and kidney injury depicted by decreased serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, creatinine, urea, uric acid, and albumin. Furthermore, EGb-761 treatment attenuated SMB-driven dyslipidemia and metabolic acidosis. Besides, EGb-761 supplementation abrogated SMB-driven oxidative stress as depicted by stabilized reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in the brain, liver, kidney, spleen, heart, and lungs. SMB induced a significant increase of tissue levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), serum nitric oxide (NO), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) which were abrogated by EGb-761 treatment. In conclusion, these results deepen our understanding of EGb-761 in light of various detrimental effects of SMB-driven toxicities. These findings provide a novel approach that can be optimized for preventing or treating exposure due to SMB toxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency worldwide. Recent studies on hematological inflammatory markers concerning acute appendicitis have shown variable results. AIMS The aim of this study was to evaluate pre-operative values of platelet indices such as mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), and red cell distribution width (RDW) in relation to the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and their efficacy as predictors of appendicular perforation. METHODS A prospective observational study of 190 patients diagnosed with appendicitis and who underwent an appendectomy was undertaken and confirmed histopathologically. Preoperatively, blood samples of white blood cells (WBCs), platelet count, MPV, PDW, and RDW were analyzed using a Sysmex XN1000 analyzer machine. RESULTS Of 190 patients, 169 had acute appendicitis, and 21 had perforated appendicitis. The mean age of patients was 28.04 ± 14.2 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1.5:1. The WBC (p<0.05), MPV (p<0.05), and PDW (p<0.05) were found to have higher statistically significant values in acute appendicitis and perforated appendicitis compared to the RDW (p>0.05). However, perforated appendicitis had a higher RDW value compared to acute appendicitis, which can be a predictive factor. CONCLUSIONS The elevated value of MPV and PDW associated with leukocytosis can be used as supportive evidence for the clinical and radiological diagnosis of acute appendicitis and appendicular perforation. Thus, these values can be used as diagnostic cost-effective inflammatory biomarkers.

Abstract
Dogs with canine parvovirus enteritis (CPVE) that develop systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) frequently have a poor prognosis. The aim of the study was to assess the prognostic potential of thrombocyte indices, acute phase proteins, electrolytes, and acid-base markers in CPVE puppies with SIRS (CPVE-SIRS+) at admission. A case-controlled, prospective, and observational study was performed on 36 CPVE puppies. Mean concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, thrombocyte count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl-) and ionized calcium (iCa) were measured and strong ion difference 3 (SID3), ATOT-albumin and ATOT-total protein were determined in CPVE-SIRS+ survivors and nonsurvivors. A prognostic cut-off value for predicting the disease outcome was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The mean values of MPV, PDW and CRP were significantly higher and the mean values of albumin, Cl- and ATOT-albumin were significantly lower in CPVE-SIRS+ nonsurvivor than CPVE-SIRS+ survivor puppies on the day of admission, but the thrombocyte count, Na+, K+, iCa, SID3 and ATOT- total protein values did not differ significantly. The positive predictive values (PPVs) for survival using cut-off value of MPV (≤15.08 fL), PDW (≤14.85%), CRP (≤180.7 mg/L), albumin (≥1.795 g/dL), Cl- (≥96.00 mmol/L), and ATOT-albumin (≥7.539) were determined as 100%, 100%, 100%, 80%, 100%, and 80%, respectively with better area under ROC curve and sensitivity. Based on sensitivity, specificity, and PPVs from ROC analysis, it is concluded that the determination of Cl- concentration and MPV at admission followed by CRP will serve as the most appropriate biomarkers in predicting the disease outcome of CPVE puppies that develop SIRS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the influence of platelet volume indices (PVI) on postoperative pain and edema in patients undergoing bimaxillary surgery and assessed the associations between PVI parameters and other clinical factors. METHODS We examined the medical records of 50 patients aged 18-40, treated between 2019 and 2020. Platelet indices (platelet count [PLT]), mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet large cell ratio) were analyzed. Postoperative pain and edema were assessed based on the frequency of intravenous (IV) analgesic administration and 3D imaging. A lasso-penalized regression was used for the analysis. RESULTS Significant positive correlations were observed between PLT and postoperative edema on the first (T1-0) and third (T3-0) postoperative days. Furthermore, PLT was positively associated with the number of IV analgesic drug administrations from 24 to 72 hours after surgery. Additionally, a discernible positive correlation was identified between PCT levels and the quantity of IV analgesic drugs administered within the first 24 hours after surgery. CONCLUSION Platelet indices, particularly PLT and PCT levels, were associated with postoperative pain and edema in patients undergoing bimaxillary surgery. These indices have the potential to serve as biomarkers for predicting and managing postoperative complications of orthognathic surgery. Further studies are required to explore the clinical utility and implications of these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thrombocytopenia and poor prognosis in severe conditions are associated. However, the clinical significance of thrombocytopenia in pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between thrombocytopenia and the prognosis of patients with PLA. METHODS A consecutive case series of 458 adult patients with PLA hospitalized at Tongji Hospital (Wuhan, China) between October 2011 and June 2021 was included in this cross-sectional analysis. Patient data were compared between the thrombocytopenia and non-thrombocytopenia groups. Multivariate logistic regression, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and propensity score -matched analyses (PSM) were performed. RESULTS Of the 458 patients with PLA, 94 (20.5%) developed thrombocytopenia, 19 (4.1%) developed septic shock, 14 (3.1%) were admitted to the ICU, and 15 (3.3%) died during hospitalization. Thrombocytopenia was independently associated with shock (95%CI = 3.529-57.944, P < 0.001), ICU admission (95%CI = 1.286-25.733, P = 0.022), and mortality (95%CI = 1.947-34.223, P = 0.004) in multivariate regression analysis. ROC analysis showed that thrombocytopenia may be an identified marker of shock [area under the ROC curve (AUC), 0.8119; cut-off, 92.50; P < 0.0001], ICU admission (AUC, 0.7484; cut-off, 82.50; P < 0.0015), and mortality (AUC, 0.7827; cut-off, 122.50; P < 0.002). These findings remained consistent across 86 pairs of patients analyzed for PSM analyses. CONCLUSIONS Thrombocytopenia is an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in PLA and patients may be more prone to adverse outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many studies have reported the association between platelets and preeclampsia. However, sample sizes were small, and their findings were inconsistent. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association in pooled samples and in detail. DATA SOURCES A systematic literature search was performed using Medline, Embase, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, NICHD-DASH, LILACS, and Scopus from inception to April 22, 2022. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Observational studies comparing platelet count between women with preeclampsia and normotensive pregnant women were included. METHODS The mean differences with 95% confidence interval in platelet count were calculated. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were conducted. Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 and ProMeta 3 software. RESULTS A total of 56 studies comprising 4892 preeclamptic and 9947 normotensive pregnant women were included. Meta-analysis showed that platelet count was significantly lower in women with preeclampsia than in normotensive controls (overall: mean difference, -32.83; 95% confidence interval, -40.13 to -25.52; P<.00001; I2=92%; mild preeclampsia: mean difference, -18.65; 95% confidence interval, -27.17 to -10.14; P<.00001; I2=84%; severe preeclampsia: mean difference, -42.61; 95% confidence interval, -57.53 to -27.68; P<.00001; I2=94%). Significantly lower platelet count was also observed in the second trimester (mean difference, -28.84; 95% confidence interval, -44.59 to -13.08; P=.0003; I2=93%), third trimester (mean difference, -40.67; 95% confidence interval, -52.14 to -29.20; P<.00001; I2=92%), and before the diagnosis of preeclampsia (mean difference, -18.81; 95% confidence interval, -29.98 to -7.64; P=.009; I2=87%), but not in the first trimester (mean difference, -15.14; 95% confidence interval, -37.71 to 7.43; P=.19; I2=71%). Overall, the pooled sensitivity and specificity of platelet count were 0.71 and 0.77, respectively. The area under the curve was 0.80. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis confirmed that platelet count was significantly lower in preeclamptic women, irrespective of severity and presence or absence of associated complications, even before the onset of preeclampsia and in the second trimester of pregnancy. Our findings suggest that platelet count may be a potential marker to identify and predict preeclampsia.

Abstract
Background Hematological inflammatory indices are currently suggested to assess systemic inflammation. This study aims to investigate a vitamin D supplementation effect on hematological indices of inflammation in rats. Method Forty-eight middle-aged male rats were allocated into a normal diet (ND) group (10% fat) and a high-fat diet (HFD) group (60% fat). The animals were fed for 26 weeks. After this period, each group was randomly divided into three subgroups, each of 8 rats: Group (1): animals were fed the ND and HFD containing 1 IU/g vitamin D for 4 months, group (2): animals were fed the ND and HFD containing 6 IU/g vitamin D for 4 months and group (3): animals were euthanized to evaluate the HFD effect. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, white blood cell count (WBCs), platelet count, platelet crit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) were measured. Results The HFD, significantly increased body weight, PCT, PDW, PLR, NLR, and MLR and significantly reduced serum vitamin D levels compared to the ND (P < 0.05). There was a significant decrease in food intake, MPV, PDW, and NLR after vitamin D supplementation in the ND-fed group (P < 0.05). A significant reduction in platelet count, PCT, and MLR was observed after vitamin D supplementation in HFD-fed rats (P < 0.05). Conclusions In our study, some hemogram-derived inflammatory indices were higher in the HFD-fed group, and vitamin D supplementation lowering effects on some hematological indices were seen in both ND and HFD groups.

Abstract
Background India is facing a galloping diabetes epidemic with an estimated 62 million patients and is projected to explode beyond 85 million by the year 2030. There is platelet dysfunction with platelet hyper-reactivity in diabetes mellitus. Aim To assess for any correlation between HbA1c levels with various platelet indices like mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR). Material and Methods Applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, diabetes mellitus patients have undergone detailed history, clinical examination, and laboratory investigations. Data is statistically analyzed for levels of HbA1c and their correlation to platelet indices. Results 58.7% study population is with HbA1c levels of more than 8%. In patients with normal range HbA1c levels between 4-6%, the MPV, PDW, and P-LCR are found to be 9.9 ± 0.97 fl, 10.84 ± 2.08 fl, and 23.75 ± 7.99%, respectively. In patients with HbA1c levels of 6.1 to 7%, the MPV, PDW, and P-LCR are found to be 10.22 ± 1.04 fl, 11.79 ± 1.8 fl, and 26.36 ± 7.05%, respectively. In patients with HbA1c levels of 7.1 to 8%, the MPV, PDW, and P-LCR values are found to be 10.21 ± 1.06 fl, 12.03 ± 2.52 fl, and 26.65 ± 8.05%, respectively. In patients with poor glycemic control with HbA1c levels more than 8%, the MPV, PDW, and P-LCR are found to be 10.64 ± 1.1 fl, 12.81 ± 2.61 fl, and 30.26 ± 8.24%, respectively. Conclusion In type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, HbA1c is positively correlated with platelet indices.

Abstract
Hypnosis is a clinically accepted relaxation technique known for stress reduction. Results from hematological research provide evidence of changes in blood components through hypnosis. However, these hematological effects have been rarely examined. Hence, we exploratively investigated the effect of a single relaxation hypnosis on the hemogram in stressed individuals, assuming a reduction of leukocytes, thrombocytes, and erythrocytes (primary outcomes). Additionally, a reduction in the erythrocyte-related parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit), and an increase in plasma volume was hypothesized (secondary outcomes). Forty-four either individuals (89 % women) with chronic stress and moderate to high hypnotic suggestibility were randomized to a hypnosis condition (20 min relaxation hypnosis; n = 20) or a control condition (20 min documentary; n = 24). Venous blood was drawn before and after the intervention and used to generate a differential hemogram and determine the plasma volume. The relaxation hypnosis led to a significant reduction in erythrocytes (Cohen's d=0.23) and consequently to a decrease in erythrocyte-related parameters (hemoglobin, d=0.27; hematocrit, d=0.37) as well as to a reduction in thrombocytes (d=0.15) in the hypnosis compared to the control condition. Putatively, this could be the consequence of an increased plasma volume (d=0.10), estimated by the hematocrit concentration and body weight. A hypnosis-induced change in leukocyte count could not be confirmed. Thus, a single session of relaxation hypnosis already alters specific blood count parameters. While relaxation-induced vasodilatation might explain these changes, it is still not completely clear how these changes affect our stress response system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is no standardized storage temperature of whole blood for acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS We conducted a prospective observational study to examine the difference in platelet function between short-term whole blood storage at 4 and 22°C. Venous blood (40 ml) was collected from seven healthy subjects who gave prior written consent. The samples were divided into three groups: before storage (group Pre), cold (4°C) storage (group C), and room temperature (22°C) storage (group R). Groups C and R were tested after 6 h of blood storage. Platelet aggregability, platelet factor 4 (PF4), β-thromboglobulin (β-TG), P-selectin expression, pH, PO2 , PCO2 , glucose, lactate, blood count, and thromboelastography (TEG) parameters were measured. The percentage change in each parameter in groups C and R was calculated using the value in group Pre as a reference. These data were then compared between groups C and R using a Wilcoxon matched pairs test. p < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS Compared with group R, group C showed significantly higher platelet aggregability with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) 2, 4, and 6 μM (all p = 0.016) and collagen 1 μg/ml (p = 0.047) stimulation, and significantly lower PF4 and β-TG elevation (both p = 0.031), glucose consumption (p = 0.031), and lactate production (p = 0.016). The ADP channel in TEG showed a significant increase in platelet aggregation rate in group C compared to group R. DISCUSSION Cold storage of whole blood in ANH may provide improved storage conditions for platelets and contribute to improved hemostasis compared to room temperature storage.

Abstract
Background Malaria is a major public health problem with the highest morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Hematological changes play a great role in malaria pathogenesis through platelets and platelet parameters. However, the changes in platelet parameters are not clearly described in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to compare platelet parameters and their correlation with parasitemia among malaria-infected adult patients and healthy adults. Methods An institutional-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 186 (93 malaria-infected patients and 93 healthy adults) study participants using a convenient sampling technique at Jinella health center, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia, from July 10-August 10, 2022. Five milliliters of venous blood were collected from each study participant, and platelet parameters were analyzed using a Unicel (DxH 800) automated hematologic analyzer. A drop of blood was taken from malaria-suspected patients for blood film preparation. Results between two groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationships between two continuous variables. A P-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Platelet, plateletcrit, and mean platelet volume of malaria-infected patients were significantly lower as compared with healthy adults (103 x103cells/μL vs 268 x103cells/μL, 0.13 fl vs 0.23 fl, and 9.6 fl vs 15.3 fl), respectively). Conversely, platelet distribution width and platelet large cell ratio were higher in malaria-infected patients than healthy adults (19.2% vs 15.3% and 0.35% vs 0.29%), respectively). Parasitemia levels had a moderately inverse correlation with platelet count (r= -0.419) and a weakly positive correlation with mean platelet volume (r=0.278). Conclusion The platelet, plateletcrit, and mean platelet volume of malaria-infected patients were significantly lower as compared with healthy adults. Malaria parasitemia had a moderate inverse correlation with platelet count and a weak positive correlation with mean platelet volume. Thrombocytopenia and alteration of platelet parameters should be considered in malaria patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Environmental inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure is potentially related to abnormal blood pressure (BP) changes and abnormal platelet activation. However, limited epidemiological studies have explored the impacts of iAs exposure on platelet change mediated by BP, especially for pregnant women. OBJECTIVES Our purpose was to investigate the associations of arsenic exposure with blood pressure and platelet indices among pregnant women. METHODS The present study population included 765 pregnant women drawn from a prospective birth cohort study in Wuhan, China, recruited between October 2013 and April 2016. Urine sampled in the second trimester were used to assess arsenic species concentrations. The relative distribution of urinary arsenic species was used to measure human methylation capacity. BP parameters and platelet indices originated from the medical record. We applied multivariable linear regression models to explore the cross-sectional relationships between urinary arsenic metabolites, BP parameters, and platelet indices. We utilized mediation analysis to investigate the impacts of arsenic exposure on platelet indices through BP as mediator variables. RESULTS We observed significant positive correlations between iAs and systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP). Pregnant women with higher methylation capacity to metabolize iAs characterized by higher secondary methylation index (SMI) and total methylation index (TMI) had a more significant reduction in SBP, DBP, and MAP. Pregnant women with higher DBP and MAP had higher platelet counts (PLC). A decreased PLC was found in subjects wither higher SMI. Additionally, SMI was negatively linked to PLC mediated through MAP. CONCLUSIONS Obtained results suggested that higher methylation capacity to metabolize iAs might contribute to decreased PLC among pregnant women, and MAP might mediate the influence of SMI on PLC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mechanical damage resulting from aortic dissection creates a thrombus in the false lumen, in which platelets are involved. Platelet index is useful for the function and activation of platelets. The aim of this study was to show the clinical relevance of the platelet index of aortic dissection. METHODS A total of 88 patients diagnosed with aortic dissection were included in this retrospective study. Demographic data and hemogram and biochemistry results of the patients were determined. Patients were divided into two groups: deceased and surviving patients. The data obtained were compared with 30-day mortality. The primary outcome was the relationship of platelet index with mortality. RESULTS A total of 88 patients, 22 of whom were female (25.0%), diagnosed with aortic dissection, were included in the study. It was determined that 27 (30.7%) of the patients were mortal. The mean age of the entire patient group was 58±13 years. According to the DeBakey classification of aortic dissection of the patients, the percentages of the 1-2-3 type were determined as 61.4, 8.0, and 30.7%, respectively. Platelet index was not found to be directly related to mortality. Increase in age, decrease in bicarbonate value, and presence of diabetes mellitus were associated with mortality. CONCLUSION Although there were no significant changes in platelet index in aortic dissection, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and platelet/lymphocyte ratio were found to be high in line with the literature. In particular, the presence of advanced age diabetes mellitus and decrease in bicarbonate are associated with mortality.

Abstract
CONTEXT Dengue fever is the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral disease in humans. Platelet indices (PIs) are given by the cell counters but are often not reported which is possibly due to under-recognition of the utility of these parameters. AIMS This study aimed to compare PIs in patients with dengue fever to assess their role in the outcome such as hospital stay and platelet transfusion requirements. SETTINGS AND DESIGN Prospective observational study in a tertiary care center, Thrissur, Kerala. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A group of 250 dengue patients was studied over a period of 18 months. The platelet parameters (platelet count, mean platelet volume [MPV], platelet distribution width [PDW], platelet large cell ratio [PLCR], plateletcrit [PCT] and immature platelet fraction [IPF]) were measured with Sysmex XN-1000 and followed up every 24 h. The clinical features, duration of hospital stay and platelet transfusion requirements details were collected. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Independent t-test, Chi-square test, Karl Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS A total of sample size was 250. The study showed normal PDW and MPV, low platelet count and PCT, and high PLCR and IPF in dengue patients. There were significant differences in PIs (lower platelet count and PCT, higher MPV, PDW, PLCR, and IPF) in comparison between dengue patients based on platelet transfusion. CONCLUSIONS PIs may act as a predictive tool in the diagnosis and predicting outcomes in dengue fever. Low platelet count and PCT, high PDW, MPV, PLCR, and IPF in transfused dengue patients were found to be statistically significant. Clinicians need to be sensitized about the utility and limitations of these indices and rationalize the need for red cell and platelet transfusions in dengue.

Abstract
Background Adriamycin-Cytoxan (AC) is a common chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer (BC) patients. Its electrolyte and hematological adverse effects have not been addressed adequately. Objective This study aimed to assess the effect of AC on hematological and electrolyte parameters among BC patients. Methods A hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study design was conducted from March to November 2022. Randomly selected AC-treated (n=100) and untreated (n=100) patients were included. Structured questionnaire and medical records were used to collect sociodemographic data. Anthropometric parameters, hematological indices, and serum electrolytes were measured. Cobas Integra 400+and SYSMEX-XT-4000i were used to analyze serum electrolytes and hematological indices respectively. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Independent t-test and chi-square test were used. p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results AC-treated patients' mean total white blood cell (TWBC), neutrophil (NE), lymphocyte (LY), red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (Hgb), hematocrit (HCT), and sodium(Na+) values were significantly reduced (p<0.05) than patients with no treatment. However, mean eosinophils (EO), platelet (PLT) counts, red cell distribution-width (RDW), potassium (K+), and plateletcrit (PCT values were significantly increased (p<0.05). Conclusion The majority of blood cells and serum sodium were affected by AC treatment. Incorporating these parameters in the routine analysis and further studies on the detailed mechanism of action of this drug is required.

Abstract
Background Thrombocytopenia may result from mechanisms such as marrow hypoplasia, increased destruction of platelets, and splenic sequestration. The gold standard method for discriminating the causes of thrombocytopenia is bone marrow examination, but it is invasive and expensive. Therefore, an alternative method should be introduced as a first-line diagnostic procedure. Of late, the automated blood cell analyzer has made it possible to assess the cause of thrombocytopenia through various machine-derived parameters, known as platelet indices, which include the mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT), which are provided as a part of routine complete blood count. Objectives The objectives of the present study are to study the variation and effectiveness of platelet indices in establishing the etiology of thrombocytopenia. Method An observational, prospective, and comparative study was conducted on 134 patients with thrombocytopenia, and 67 cases were taken as the normal group. The study group was classified into two groups: hypo-productive and hyper-destructive. Platelet indices were recorded and compared in the two groups along with the normal group. Results The mean platelet count (10^3 μL) in the normal, hypo-productive, and hyper-destructive groups was 232.03 ± 74.84, 73.00 ± 36.52, and 68.28 ± 38.24, respectively. The MPV and mean PCT in the normal, hypo-productive, and hyper-destructive groups were 9.46 ± 1.68fL, 8.99 ± 1.49fL, and 11.35 ± 1.35fL and 0.22 ± 0.06%, 0.07 ± 0.04%, and 0.08 ± 0.05%, respectively. The mean PDW in the normal, hypo-productive, and hyper-destructive groups was 15.66 ± 1.76fL, 17.63 ± 1.01fL, and 18.32 ± 1.10fL, respectively. Conclusion In the present study, platelet indices such as MPV, PCT, and PDW are higher in the hyper-destructive group and may discriminate hyper-destructive from hypo-productive causes of thrombocytopenia.

Abstract
Background
Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific disorder characterized by endothelial dysfunction, and activation of the coagulation system. Alteration of PLT parameters is the common hematological abnormality observed in women with PE. The main aim of this study was to systematically review previous studies from around the world to generate evidence about the relationship between platelet count (PC) and PE, as well as mean platelet volume (MPV) and PE, by calculating the pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) of PC and MPV between PE and normotensive (NT) groups.
Methods
Relevant articles which were published in the English language from January 10, 2011, to January 10, 2021, were systematically searched through PubMed, Web of Science, and African journals online. In addition, reference probing of published articles searching was employed through Google Scholar and Google for searching grey literature. The methodological qualities of articles were assessed using Joana Brigg’s institute critical appraisal checklist. A random-effects model was used to estimate pooled WMD of PLT parameters between the two groups with the respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) using Stata version 11.0. The I2 statistics and Egger’s regression test were used to assess heterogeneity and publication bias among included studies, respectively.
Results
A total of 25 articles were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Of which, 23 studies were used in each PC and MPV analysis. The overall pooled WMD of PC and MPV between PE and NT groups were -41.45 × 109/L [95% CI; -51.8, -31.0] and 0.98 fl [95% CI; 0.8, 1.1], respectively. The pooled WMD revealed that PC decreased significantly in the PE group compared to the NT group while MPV increased significantly in the PE group.
Conclusions
This systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that there is a significant decrease in PC and a significant increase in MPV during PE development among pregnant women. As a result, a change in these parameters among pregnant women may indicate the development of PE.

Abstract
Various candidate biomarkers have been investigated for the early and accurate diagnosis of Kawasaki disease (KD). We aimed to evaluate platelet activity using platelet indices (PI) in patients with KD or simple febrile illness to determine whether these indices might support a diagnosis of KD. Another objective of the study was to delineate the changes in PI from the acute to convalescent phases of KD. A total of 225 patients with complete KD (cKD), 110 with incomplete KD (iKD), and 71 with simple febrile illness (control) were enrolled. PI included mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT). We serially measured the serum PI four times for each patient with KD from the acute to convalescent phases: on D0 (day of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment) and repeated on days 2 (D2), 14 (D14), and 56 (D56) after IVIG therapy. Data from the control group were collected during the acute stage of the disease (D0). The platelet counts in the cKD (341±103×103/mm3) and iKD (374±135×103/mm3) at diagnosis were higher than the control group (290±128×103/mm3). The PCT in the cKD (0.284±0.085%) and iKD (0.313±0.109%) groups at diagnosis were also higher than the control group (0.246±0.108%). However, the MPV and PDW levels in the KD group were not statistically significant. Therefore, platelet count and PCT are adjuvant parameters for the differential diagnosis of KD from a simple febrile illness.

Abstract
Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal tract inflammatory state, which is affecting millions of individuals in the world. It can affect alimentary canals such as colon, rectum, ileum and other parts. In IBD, platelet parameters underwent several changes. Therefore, the aim of this review was determining the estimated pooled mean platelet volume and mean difference in inflammatory bowel disease to elucidate its potential diagnostic value. Methods Articles were extensively searched in bibliographic databases using Medical Subject Heading and entry phrases or terms. In addition, articles were directly searched in Google Scholar to account for the studies omission in searching bibliographic databases. Observational (cohort, cross-sectional and case-control) studies, published in English language and conducted on IBD were included. For studies meeting the eligibility criteria, the first author’s name, publication year, population, study design, study area, sample size, mean platelet volume and standard deviation were extracted and entered in to Microsoft-excel. The analysis was done by Stata version 11. In order to estimate the pooled mean platelet volume and mean difference, random effect model was done. The heterogeneity was quantified using Higgin’s I2 statistics. Publication bias was determined using Egger’s test statistics and funnel plot. Sub-group analysis based on population carried to reduce heterogeneity. Results A total of 17 relevant articles with 2957 participants (1823 IBD cases and 1134 healthy controls) were included to this study. The pooled estimated MPV was 9.29fl; 95% CI: 9.01–9.57 and 9.50fl; 95% CI: 8.81–10.20 in IBD and control groups, respectively. The standardized pooled estimate of mean difference in mean platelet volume was -0.83fl; 95% CI: -1.15, -0.51; I2: 93.1%; P-value < 0.001. In subgroup analysis based on population, the highest estimated mean difference in MPV was observed among patients of CD; -2.30; 95% CI: -3.46, -1.14; I2: 97.8%; P-value < 0.001. Conclusion According to the current systematic review and meta-analysis, mean platelet volume was lower in IBD compared to control. The decreased mean platelet volume could be attributed to platelet consumption or sequestration associated with the progression of IBD. As a result, in IBD, mean platelet volume can provide diagnostic and prognostic information.

Abstract
Background Calcium carbide (CaC2) is a chemical primarily used in the production of acetylene gas. The misuse of CaC2 to induce fruit ripening is a global challenge with a potential adverse effects to human health. Additionally, CaC2 is known to contain some reasonable amount of arsenic and phosphorous compounds that are toxic and pose a danger to human health when ingested. The current study sought to characterize CaC2 toxicity and elucidate any protective effects by cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12), a well-established antioxidant and anti-inflammatory bio-molecule. Female Swiss white mice were randomly assigned into three groups; the first group was the control, while the second group was administered with CaC2. The third group received CaC2 followed by administration of vitamin B12. The mice were sacrificed at 60 days post treatment, hematological, biochemical, glutathione assay, cytokine ELISA and standard histopathology was performed. Results CaC2 administration did not significantly alter the mice body weight. CaC2 administration resulted in a significant decrease in packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cells (RBCs) and RBC indices; indicative of CaC2-driven normochromic microcytic anaemia. Further analysis showed CaC2-driven leukopenia. Evidently, vitamin B12 blocked CaC2-driven suppression of PCV, Hb, RBCs and WBCs. Monocytes and neutrophils were significantly up-regulated by CaC2. CaC2-induced elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and bilirubin signaled significant liver damage. Notably, vitamin B12 stabilized AST, ALT and bilirubin in the presence of CaC2, an indication of a protective effect. Histopathological analysis depicted that vitamin B12 ameliorated CaC2-driven liver and kidney injury. CaC2 resulted in the depletion of glutathione (GSH) levels in the liver; while in the brain, kidney and lungs, the GSH levels were elevated. CaC2 administration resulted in elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IFN-γ. Vitamin B12 assuaged the CaC2-induced elevation of these pro-inflammatory cytokines. Conclusions These findings demonstrate for the first time that oral supplementation with vitamin B12 can protect mice against CaC2-mediated toxicity, inflammation and oxidative stress. The findings provide vital tools for forensic and diagnostic indicators for harmful CaC2 exposure; while providing useful insights into how vitamin B12 can be explored further as an adjunct therapy for CaC2 toxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is generally recognized that repeat apheresis increases the risk for iron deficiency, thus may impact on the blood homeostasis. With regard to donor vigilance, we clarified the mid- to long-term effects of plateletapheresis by comparing the most frequent donors with the first-time ones in hematological and biochemical tests. METHODS Levels of erythropoietin (EPO), hemoglobin (Hb) and ferritin were analyzed in double-unit (500 mL whole blood or 6 × 1011 apheresis platelets) donations in three male cohorts, with identifiers of first-time whole-blood donors (n = 30), first-time platelet donors transited from maximal whole blood to apheresis (n = 30) and frequent donors subjected to extreme plateletpheresis (n = 90), respectively. According to the number of donations, the last earnest cohort, who donate almost 24 times a year, was further subdivided into three groups- casual (76-120 life-time donations in 5 years), mediocre (121-168 within 7 years) and enthusiastic (≥169 within 7 years and a month). RESULTS Regardless of the donation experience in whole blood or plateletpheresis, iron deficiency (serum ferritin concentrations <15 μg/L) was identified in all earnest cohorts. The ferritin means were significantly lower in plateletpheresis groups, with the lowest values in the enthusiastic group. EPO levels showed a significant inverse correlation with ferritin (p = 0.015, r = -0.224). Long-term earnest donors had the lowest iron stores accompanied by a later thrombocytosis and a final increase in EPO was revealed. CONCLUSION Regular ferritin screens are crucial to ensure a high level of donor health protection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of livedoid vasculopathy (LV) remains unknown. Although platelet activation occurs in LV, little research has been conducted on LV platelet morphology parameters. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether platelet morphology changes in LV and its clinical significance. METHODS Twenty-seven LV patients and 21 cutaneous small vessel vasculitis (CSVV) patients, all at the active stage, were included. Platelet parameters in active- and stable-stage LV and CSVV patients were compared. Correlations between these platelet parameters and LV composite clinical scores were analysed. RESULTS LV patients' mean age was 25.48 years (range: 9-62 years), and 81.48% (22/27) were women and 18.52% (5/27) were men. The platelet counts and plateletcrit (PCT) levels were significantly elevated in LV patients compared with CSVV patients and in active-stage LV patients compared with stable-stage LV patients after treatment. LV patient composite clinical scores that reflected disease severity and activity were positively correlated with the platelet count and PCT levels. CONCLUSION Altered platelet morphology was detected in LV patients. Platelet count and PCT might be haematological biomarkers for early prediction of LV activity and relapses and for differential identification between LV and CSVV.

Abstract
Background Both malignant pleural effusion (MPE) and tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) are common etiologies of pleural effusion; the present study was conducted to establish the diagnostic value of platelet parameters in the differential diagnosis of MPE and TPE. Methods This retrospective study enrolled patients with lung adenocarcinoma-associated MPE and TPE. Platelet parameter data, including platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet-larger cell ratio (P-LCR), were collected. Principal component analysis and multiple logistic regression modelling were carried out to assess the diagnostic value of these platelet parameters. Results The MPE group and the TPE group enrolled 270 and 433 patients, respectively. Demographic characteristics of patients were more female and higher age in the MPE group. MPV, PDW, and P-LCR were significantly higher in MPE patients, while PLT and PCT were significantly higher in TPE patients. Principal component analysis generated two principal components (PCs) based on above platelet parameters. After adjusting for confounding factors including gender and age, multiple logistic regression showed positive association between PC1 and MPE. Conclusion Platelet parameters were potential biomarkers in distinguishing lung adenocarcinoma-associated MPE from TPE. A patient with lower PLT and PCT and higher MPV, PDW, and P-LCR was more likely to be diagnosed as the former. Principal component analysis and multiple logistic regression performed well in improving multicollinearity, adjusting confounding factors, and identifying important risk factors for MPE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelet distribution width (PDW) and PDW-to-platelet ratio (PPR) have been proven to be good prognostic indicators for many diseases. However, their prognostic values in severe burns have not been reported. OBJECTIVE To investigate the early time course of PDW and PPR in severe burn patients and investigate their prognostic values. METHODS This is a 16-year, single-center retrospective study of 590 severe burn patients. The complete blood count parameters on day 1, day 3, and day 7 postburn, including PDW and PPR, were collected. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) analysis, multiple logistic regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were performed to evaluate the prognostic values of PDW and PPR in severe burn patients. RESULTS According to 120-day follow-up records, 96 patients were nonsurvivors and 494 patients were survivors. ROC and area under the curve (AUC) analysis showed that, for predicting 120-day prognosis, the AUC of PDW (0.782) and PPR (0.816) on day 3 was the highest, followed by the AUC of PDW (0.764) and PPR (0.750) on day 7. The ROC-AUC of PPR (0.816) on day 3 was very close to that of the ABSI score (0.818). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the PDW (P = 0.033 and P = 0.009) and PPR (P = 0.052 and P = 0.046) on day 3 and day 7 were all significantly independently positively associated with 120-day mortality. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that high PDW and PPR were both significantly associated with a high 120-day mortality rate on day 3 and day 7. CONCLUSION PDW and PPR on day 3 and day 7 were independent risk factors for 120-day mortality in severe burn patients. These objective and readily available prognostic indicators may be more clinically favored.

Abstract
Introduction Platelets are not only involved in hemostasis and coagulation, but play a significant role in innate immunity and inflammatory response. Excess production of cytokines and acute phase reactants affect megakaryopoiesis resulting in the release of immature platelets from the bone marrow altering platelet indices. Aim To study platelet indices in RT-PCR-proven COVID patients and non-COVID patients. Methods A case-control study was conducted on 199 COVID-19 patients and 198 normal individuals. Blood samples were analyzed in an automated hematology analyzer. The platelet indices like platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet large cell count (PLCC), and platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR) were compared among two groups. Results Platelet count in COVID-19 patients were significantly low (p<0.01) compared to controls, and a significant number of COVID-19 patients had thrombocytopenia. Plateletcrit (PCT) was also significantly decreased in COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID individuals. MPV, PDW, and PLCR were significantly (p<0.05) high in COVID-19 patients in comparison to controls, but was not significantly raised in a large number of cases. In contrast, there were no significant differences in platelet large cell count (PLCC) values between COVID-19 cases and non-COVID-19 controls. Conclusion Platelet indices like platelet count, PCT, MPV, PDW, and P-LCR are significantly altered in COVID-19 infection and thereby can be used as biomarkers in COVID-19. Further research is needed to find if these simple, cost-effective parameters can be used to predict the severity and prognosis in COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Platelets are increasingly considered to play an important role in inflammation and are being regarded as a putative bridge linking mental diseases and inflammatory response. Platelet-associated haematological parameters including mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet to albumin ratio (PAR) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) to platelet ratio (RPR), have been recently investigated as simple, easily available, and inexpensive inflammatory markers. In this study, we aimed is to use large-scale clinical data to study platelet parameters in patients with affective disorders, to further investigate the predictive power of platelet parameters for major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS The retrospective, naturalistic, cross-sectional study analysed the data of 14,007 Chinese affective disorder patients, including 4,801 patients with first-episode MDD, 4,098 patients with recurrent MDD, 3,444 patients with BD manic episodes and 1,664 patients with BD depressive episodes. Meanwhile, 6,847 healthy subjects were served as the control group. The differences in the MPV, PDW, PCT, SII, PLR, PAR, RPR and albumin among different groups were compared, and the contributing factors for the occurrence of MDD or BD were analysed. RESULTS There were significant differences in MPV, PDW, PCT, SII, PLR, RPR and albumin values among the study groups. In the subjects, patients experiencing BD manic episodes had the highest mean values of MPV and SII, patients experiencing BD depressive episodes had the lowest mean values of platelet counts and PAR, and patients with MDD had the highest mean values of PLR and RDW. The levels of MPV, PDW and albumin were independently correlated with MDD and BD, and they are important predictors for differentiating patients with MDD or BD from healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that different affective disorders have unique platelet parameter variation patterns, highlighting the role of platelet parameters and systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD.

Abstract
Background Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy‐related illness characterized by high blood pressure (BP) and proteinuria after the 20th gestational week (GW). Platelet (PLT) parameter changes are the common hematological abnormalities observed in PE patients. The main aim of this study was to assess the role of PLT parameters for PE diagnosis among pregnant women. Methods A comparative cross‐sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar Specialized Hospital. A total of 126 pregnant women (63 normotensive [NT] and 63 PE) were recruited using a convenient sampling method. Three milliliter blood was collected from each participant, and PLT parameters were determined using Sysmex XS‐500i analyzer. An independent t‐test supplemented with receiver‐operating characteristics (ROC) were used for comparisons and diagnostic value of PLT parameters between the study groups. Results Platelet count (PC) was significantly lower in the PE group compared to that in the NT group, whereas mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet large cell ratio (P‐LCR), and platelet distribution width (PDW) were significantly higher in PE. MPV had the largest area under the curve (AUC) [0.91: 95% CI; 0.85–0.96] followed by PC [0.79: 95% CI; 0.72–0.87]. MPV can differentiate PE patients from NT pregnant women at cut‐off value ≥12.10 fl (84.1% sensitivity and 87.3% specificity) while PC can indicate PE at a cut‐off value ≤176.5 × 109/L (65.1% sensitivity and 87.3% specificity). Conclusion A decreased PC and an increased MPV, P‐LCR, and PDW can be used as a simple, cost‐effective, quick, and reliable method of PE screening. Of them, MPV is the best indicator of PE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between platelet-associated parameters and psoriasis has been controversial. The purpose of our meta-analysis was to assess whether platelet count, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) are associated with psoriasis. METHODS We performed a thorough documentation retrieval via PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science until June 2021. Pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. RESULTS Overall, 22 studies involving 1749 patients with psoriasis and 1538 healthy controls were selected for the meta-analysis. The outcomes showed that platelet count presented non-significant differences between psoriatic patients and normal individuals (SMD = 0.12, 95% CI = -0.07 to 0.32, P = .210), while PLR (SMD = 0.28, 95% CI = 0.03-0.53, P = .031), MPV (SMD = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.30-0.79, P < .001), and PDW (SMD = 0.29, 95% CI = 0.03-0.55, P = .027) were remarkably greater in the psoriatic patients than in the healthy individuals, and similar results were found in subgroup analyses. The analytical results of susceptibility revealed that the outcomes were robust, and no evidence of substantial publication bias was identified. CONCLUSION Patients with psoriasis present significantly higher PLR, MPV, and PDW than healthy individuals, suggesting that psoriasis is accompanied by low-grade systemic inflammation and platelet activation.

Abstract
Background: Heatstroke is a common clinical symptom in summer with high mortality requiring identification of appropriate and rapid methods of assessment. Method: This is a retrospective study that included the recent 10 years clinical data of heatstroke patients. A total of n = 186 patients were included in this study and grouped based on platelet (PLT) abnormality observed on admission. Results: In the study group, n = 120 patients (64.5%) patients had normal PLT and n = 66 patients (35.5%) had abnormal PLT. Compared with PLT-normal group, PLT-abnormal group had higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scores [median 15.0 (IQR 11.5–21.5) vs. 9.0 (IQR 7.0–12.5)] and SOFA scores [median 6.0 (IQR 4.0–10.0) vs. 2.0 (IQR 2.0–4.0)], lower Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (GCS)[median 8.0 (IQR 5.0–12.0) vs. 13.0 (IQR 9.0–14.0)]. The PLT-abnormal group had severe organ damage, including damage to the coagulation system, liver, and kidney (all p < 0.05). Significant differences were noted in 90-day survival between the two groups even after correction for Age, GCS, White blood cell count (WBC), Neutrophil, International normalized ratio (INR), Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), Procalcitonin (PCT), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Creatine (CR), D-Dime (D-D) (Before correction P < 0.001; After correction P = 0.009).The area under the ROC curve for the prediction of mortality based on PLT was 80.7% (95% CI 0.726–0.888, P < 0.001), the optimal cutoff value was 94, the sensitivity was 77.3%, and the specificity was 82.6%. Conclusion: Patients with heatstroke with platelet abnormalities during admission have more severe organ impairment and a lower 90-day survival rate even when adjusted for other factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pre-eclampsia (PET) is a potentially devastating multi-systemic disorder resulting in the generation of oxidative stress. Platelet activation causes vasoconstriction and release of inflammatory cytokines, resulting in an intensified inflammatory response, endothelial damage, and coagulopathy which culminate in adverse pregnancy outcomes. AIM To compare the platelet parameters between preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women and their relationship to adverse outcomes in women with pre-eclampsia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a case-control study of platelet indices of 60 pre-eclamptic and 60 normotensive pregnant women recruited at 28 weeks and followed till delivery. A blood sample was collected at entry into the study and just before delivery. The sample was analyzed within 1 h of collection using the Mythic 18 hematological auto-analyzer. Data were analyzed using IBM-SPSS version 22. A P-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS The mean platelet count, Platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit were statistically significantly different between normotensive and severe preeclamptic participants (p= <0.001). Statistically significant differences were not present in any of the platelet parameters between mild and severe PET. The odds of developing eclampsia was low at higher mean platelet count and plateletcrit levels above 161.36 ± 73.74 × 109/L [p = 0.02, AOR = 0.27, 95% CI (0.08-0.88)] and 0.13 ± 0.05% [p = 0.001, AOR = 0.22, 95% CI (0.08-0.58)] respectively. Eclampsia was strongly associated with P-LCR (platelet-large cell ratio) above 23.15 ± 4.92% [p = 0.004, AOR = 11.00, 95%CI (1.48-89.02)]. Abruptio placentae had low odds at lower levels of mean plateletcrit. Pre-term birth was significantly lower at mean plateletcrit levels above 0.14 ± 0.05%; admission into neonatal intensive care unit was strongly associated with a mean PLC ratio above 22.73 ± 5.91%. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated significant differences in platelet count, plateletcrit, platelet distribution width, and P-LCR between pre-eclamptic and normotensive women. Increase in P-LCR is a risk factor for eclampsia although the effect size is low.
