Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prior research on the effects of social media promotion of tobacco products has predominantly relied on survey-based self-report measures of marketing exposure, which potentially introduce endogeneity, recall, and selection biases. New approaches can enhance measurement and help better understand the effects of exposure to tobacco-related messages in a dynamic social media marketing environment. We used geolocation-specific tweet rate as an exogenous indicator of exposure to smokeless tobacco (ST)-related content and employed this measure to examine the influence of social media marketing on ST sales. AIMS AND METHODS Autoregressive error models were used to analyze the association between the ST-relevant tweet rate (aggregated by 4-week period from February 12, 2017 to June 26, 2021 and scaled by population density) and logarithmic ST unit sales across time by product type (newer, snus, conventional) in the United States, accounting for autocorrelated errors. Interrupted time series approach was used to control for policy change effects. RESULTS ST product category-related tweet rates were associated with ST unit sales of newer and conventional products, controlling for price, relevant policy events, and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. On average, 100-unit increase in the number of newer ST-related tweets was associated with 14% increase in unit sales (RR = 1.14; p = .01); 100-unit increase in conventional ST tweets was associated with ~1% increase in unit sales (p = .04). Average price was negatively associated with the unit sales. CONCLUSIONS Study findings reveal that ST social media tweet rate was related to increased ST consumption and illustrate the utility of exogenous measures in conceptualizing and assessing effects in the complex media environment. IMPLICATIONS Tobacco control initiatives should include efforts to monitor the role of social media in promoting tobacco use. Surveillance of social media platforms is critical to monitor emerging tobacco product-related marketing strategies and promotional content reach. Exogenous measures of potential exposure to social media messages can supplement survey data to study media effects on tobacco consumption.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION E-cigarettes have been marketed illicitly as smoking cessation aids and reduced risk tobacco products in the United States. Our study assessed consumers' exposure to such claims and evaluated their impact on relative risk perceptions and e-cigarette use. METHODS Data are from the Assessment of the post-College Experience study, which followed a cohort of young adults since 2010 when they were college freshmen. We used data from survey waves 10 (fall 2017) through 14 (fall 2019) to assess past 6 month exposure to e-cigarette marketing that made smoking cessation or modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) claims. Logistic regression models examined if exposure to claims at waves 11 through 14 were predictors of e-cigarette use and relative risk perceptions at wave 14. RESULTS Exposure to MRTP (28.4% to 40.1%) and cessation claims (29.1% to 46.6%) increased, with participants reporting more exposure to cessation than MRTP claims at each wave. Multiple exposures were associated with perceptions that e-cigarettes are less harmful compared to cigarettes (Cessation: AOR = 1.12, CI: 1.01-1.23; p = 0.025; MRTP: AOR = 1.16; CI: 1.05-1.29; p = 0.003). Neither claim type was associated with past 30-day e-cigarette use. Claim exposure did not increase e-cigarette initiation among never e-cigarette users. However, current cigarette smokers who had never used e-cigarettes at wave 10 had 2.5 higher odds of initiating e-cigarette use by wave 14 for each exposure to a cessation claim (AOR = 2.53; CI: 1.43-4.45; p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Young adults reported increasing exposure to unauthorized e-cigarette health claims. Exposure was associated with reduced relative risk perceptions, but was not associated with past 30-day e-cigarette use. Cessation claims may motivate current cigarette smokers to try e-cigarettes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cigar use, including little cigars and cigarillos (LCCs) and large traditional cigars, continues to harm young adults. Research on harm beliefs about cigars, particularly large cigars, is sparse. The current study examined cigar harm beliefs and associations with cigar use. Methods: Data are from a 2019 survey of a young adult cohort study recruited in fall 2010. Participants were asked questions about their beliefs about the harm of LCC and large cigar use. Those reporting ever use of cigars were asked how frequently they inhale the smoke into their lungs. Results: Participants (N = 1910) were 51.9% female with a mean age of 26.7 (SD = 0.6). Ever cigar use was 44.2% for large cigars and 43% for LCCs. Compared to those who have never used large cigars or LCCs, those reporting ever use of large cigars or LCCs reported lower harm beliefs about inhaling harmful chemicals and becoming addicted (ps <.0001). Those who reported higher harm beliefs also reported inhaling the smoke into their lungs more frequently for large cigars and LCCs (ps<.05). Conclusions: Cigar use harm beliefs were lower among participants reporting ever use of cigars compared to those reporting never use. Contrary to predictions, those reporting greater harm beliefs were more likely to report inhaling smoke more frequently than those with lower harm beliefs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We assessed patterns and correlates, including demographic characteristics, psychological factors, and social role transitions, of young adults' tobacco use over time. METHODS In the fall of 2010, we recruited a cohort of 3146 students from 11 colleges in North Carolina and Virginia. Participants completed baseline and at least two survey waves between 2010 and 2019. RESULTS The sample was 49.8% female, 15.7% non-white, and 6.6% Hispanic. Longitudinal latent class analysis revealed a five-class model with distinct patterns and correlates of tobacco use. Limited Use (52.6% of sample) had minimal use. College-Limited Combustible Tobacco Users (18.6%) had moderate probability of cigarette, cigar, and waterpipe smoking, which decreased to no use post-college. Intermittent Sustained Polytobacco Users (10.9%) had low probability of use that continued post-college. College Polytobacco with Continued Cigarette and E-Cigarette Users (14.5%) had high probability of use of cigarette smoking and increasing probability of e-cigarette, both of which continued post-college. Sustained Polytobacco Users (5.7%) had moderate probability of use of tobacco products across all waves. CONCLUSIONS Patterns of tobacco use varied considerably. In most classes, tobacco use was highest during freshman year and in three classes, use continued post-college. Prevention activities should focus on first-year students and target those at risk for post-college tobacco use.

Abstract
In Spring 2020, most US states and territories implemented stay-at-home orders to slow transmission of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2, the cause of COVID-19. Little is known about the impact of stay-at-home orders on tobacco and nicotine use including among young adults. The current study examined participants (N = 1727) completing three recent survey waves from a longitudinal cohort of young adults recruited in 2010 from North Carolina and Virginia, USA: Wave 13 (Spring 2019), Wave 14 (Fall 2019), and Wave 15 (Spring 2020) to assess changes in cigarette and e-cigarette use. We conducted logistic regression analyses to compare the odds that participants reported smoking or vaping in Wave 14 relative to Wave 13 to establish if there was a trend of use pre-pandemic. Then, we conducted logistic regression analyses to compare the odds that participants reported smoking or vaping in Wave 15 relative to Wave 14 to determine the impact of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. When comparing the odds of reporting tobacco use at Wave 14 to Wave 13, no differences emerged (p > 0.05). However, when comparing tobacco use at Wave 15 to Wave 14, participants had 40% lower odds of reporting past 30-day cigarette use (p = 0.02) and 50% lower odds of reporting past 30-day e-cigarette use (p < 0.01). The current study provides initial evidence that young adults may have reduced their tobacco and nicotine use during the stay-at-home orders. However, more work is needed to determine the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tobacco use and cessation in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE E-cigarettes have gained popularity, most recently with pod-style devices, such as JUUL. We examined changes in JUUL awareness, use, perceptions, nicotine content knowledge, number of days a pod lasts and exposure to JUUL retail advertising over a 6-month period in a cohort of young adults. METHODS In spring and fall 2018, 1836 young adults completed online surveys on tobacco use, including JUUL perceptions and use behaviours. Demographics, tobacco use and JUUL advertising exposure in spring 2018 were examined as predictors of current JUUL use in fall 2018. RESULTS Ever and current JUUL use doubled in 6 months (5.9% vs 12.7%, p<0.001; 1.6% vs 3.4%, p<0.001). The number of days a JUUL pod lasts significantly changed (p=0.049). Although there was an increase in those reporting JUUL has as much or more nicotine than a pack of cigarettes, 58% are 'not sure' of JUUL's nicotine content. Exposure to JUUL's advertising significantly increased (31.8% to 46.4%; p<0.001). In multivariable models, those perceiving JUUL as or more harmful than cigarettes, and former and never cigarette smokers had significantly lower odds of current JUUL use at 6 months compared with their respective counterparts (p<0.0001). Those reporting exposure to JUUL's advertising had significantly increased odds of current JUUL use 6 months later (p<0.03). CONCLUSIONS Findings demonstrate changes in knowledge of JUUL's nicotine content, perceptions and use over a short period of time, suggesting frequent measurement is necessary. Additionally, efforts are needed to regulate retail advertising and ensure consumer education about product risks as they are associated with current use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to other marketing restrictions, one venue where tobacco companies concentrate their marketing efforts to reach young adults is bars/nightclubs. OBJECTIVE This study examined the relationship between exposure to tobacco marketing in bars/nightclubs and number of alternative tobacco/nicotine products used 6 months later among college students. METHODS Participants were 1,406 students aged 18-29 years old who reported going to bars or nightclubs at least rarely (M age=21.95; 67% female; 46% non-Hispanic white). Students completed an online survey in fall 2014/spring 2015 (wave 1) and again 6 months later (wave 2). Multilevel Poisson regression models were used to assess the relationship between exposure to three types of marketing at bars/nightclubs at wave 1 (tobacco/nicotine product advertisements; free samples; industry representatives) and number of tobacco products used (range=0-5) at wave 2, controlling for school type (2 year vs 4 year), age, sex, race/ethnicity and frequency of bar visits. An interaction between the number of wave 1 products and each marketing variable was tested. RESULTS Greater exposure to free samples and tobacco industry representatives at bars/nightclubs predicted a greater number of products used 6 months later, but only among wave 1 non-tobacco users and not among tobacco users. Exposure to advertisements at bars/nightclubs did not predict the number of products used 6 months later. CONCLUSION Tobacco companies claim that marketing is targeted to those who already use the product, not to non-users. However, the current study indicates tobacco marketing in bars and nightclubs may encourage use among non-users and has no influence on current users.

Abstract
PURPOSE We examined whether waterpipe café, vape shop, and traditional tobacco retailer (e.g. stores selling cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco) locations were associated with census tract composition and tobacco use among young adults in North Carolina and Virginia. Methods: We identified waterpipe cafés, vape shops, and traditional tobacco retailers in North Carolina and Virginia and conducted multivariable analyses between community characteristics (gender, race, ethnicity, education, college enrollment, and poverty) and density per 1000 population. Using fall 2017 data from 1099 young adults residing in North Carolina and Virginia, we conducted logistic regression analyses to determine whether tobacco retailer density and proximity were associated with tobacco use. Results: Waterpipe café, vape shop, and traditional retailer density were higher in communities with more people who were Hispanic, college-educated, and college-enrolled (each p < .05). Waterpipe café and traditional retailer density were higher in communities with more people living below the poverty level (each p < .05). Waterpipe café density was higher in communities with more people who were male (p < .05), while traditional retailer density was lower (p < .05). Waterpipe café and vape shop proximity were associated with increased likelihood of waterpipe tobacco use in the past 6 months (each p < .05; unadjusted). Traditional retailer proximity and waterpipe café, vape shop, and traditional retailer density were not associated with tobacco use. Conclusions: Waterpipe cafés and vape shops are located in both impoverished and college-educated communities in North Carolina and Virginia, similar to where traditional tobacco retailers are located. Further research is needed to examine associations with tobacco use.

Abstract
Background/Purpose: The Guam Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Consortium developed action teams as part of their strategic plan to reduce the risk of NCDs. Smoking, Nutrition, Alcohol, Physical Activity, and Obesity (SNAPO) health indicators were targeted. The primary objective of this study was to describe SNAPO among students at the University of Guam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2015 on a non-random sample of students (n=378; 185 males, 193 females) ≥18 years old attending the University of Guam. Information on SNAPO indicators (smoking/tobacco-related uses, poor nutritional behaviors, alcohol use, physical inactivity, and obesity) were collected using questions from the Guam Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and other local studies. Statistical tests were used to determine sex-specific differences. Results: The overall prevalence of SNAPO health indicators included cigarette smoking (9.1%), smokeless tobacco use (6.7%), areca nut chewing (7.5%), alcohol consumption (44.3%) and binge drinking (24.6%), physical inactivity (54.5%), infrequent fruit (77.5%) and vegetable (68.0%) consumption, frequent fast food consumption (31.5%), inadequate water intake (89.1%) and obesity (22.6%). Sex-specific statistical differences were marginal for cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco use and significant for physical inactivity and obesity. Conclusion: The SNAPO health indicators provide an updated status of substance use and obesity-related risk factors of college students in Guam. Continued collection of the data is encouraged to inform campus-wide policies or programs that promote student health, monitor student health trends, and evaluate the Guam NCD Strategic Plan over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We assess the longitudinal associations between marijuana and cigar (little cigars and cigarillos [LCCs] and large cigars) use on subsequent initiation of marijuana and cigar use. METHODS Data are from a cohort study of 2189 young adults recruited in fall 2010 from 11 colleges in the Southeast. We used discrete-time survival analysis to examine whether ever use of marijuana at baseline (spring 2011, freshman year) predicted initiation of LCCs and large cigars and whether ever use of these cigar products predicted initiation of marijuana use across 10 waves of data collection (2011-2018). RESULTS The sample was 65.3 % female, 83.6 % White, 5.9 % Hispanic, and 61.8 % had college-educated mothers. At baseline, 70 % reported never using LCCs, 71 % reported never using large cigars, and 74 % reported never using marijuana. Ever use of marijuana at baseline was associated with an increased risk of LCC initiation (Incident rate ratio [IRR] = 1.6, 95 %CI = 1.0, 2.5) but not large cigar initiation. Ever use of LCCs (IRR = 1.4, 95 %CI = 1.1, 1.8) and ever use of large cigars (IRR = 1.3, 95 %CI = 1.1, 1.8) at baseline both predicted initiation of marijuana use. CONCLUSIONS Our findings support growing evidence that marijuana and LCCs are strongly associated and use of one substance predicts use of the other. In contrast to studies of adults, we also found that young adults who have tried large cigars may be at increased risk for subsequent marijuana use. These findings highlight the need to consider each product as a potential gateway of the other when developing interventions for young adults.

Abstract
Background: Alcohol mixed with energy drink (AmED) use among college students is associated with specific adverse effects (e.g., sexual assault, driving while intoxicated). This study offered the opportunity to evaluate correlates of past year AmED use in a large sample of college students. Methods: In autumn 2010, emails were sent to all first year students (n = 29,536) at 11 colleges and universities in North Carolina and Virginia, inviting them to participate in a brief web-based survey to be used to establish a cohort for the parent tobacco use study; 10,340 (35%) students responded to the web-based survey, which elicited items on demographics, past year use of AmED, and other health behaviors. Results: Past year of AmED was reported by 29.4% of students. Logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender (adjusted odds ratios [AOR] = 1.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.16-1.42); ever use of smokeless tobacco (AOR = 3.51, 95% CI = 3.00-4.10); current smoking (AOR = 4.97, 95% CI = 4.34-5.69); 2 or fewer days of physical activity per week (AOR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.04-1.28); and 7 or 8 hours of sleep per day (AOR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.02-1.24) predicted risk of past year use of AmED. Conclusions: Nearly a third of first year college students reported past year use of AmED. Our finding of increased past year use of AmED use among women is new and might reflect the changing epidemiology of female college alcohol use. Of additional concern, such use might also reflect targeted marketing to women by the energy drink industry. Findings can guide future research as well as substance counseling to college students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Colleges have implemented policies to limit tobacco use on-campus; however, the off-campus environment is often overlooked in tobacco control efforts. We assessed availability, marketing, and promotion of cigarettes, snus, and traditional smokeless tobacco (SLT) in a sample of communities surrounding 11 college campuses in North Carolina and Virginia. PARTICIPANTS Between January-March of 2011, 2012 and 2013, 481 tobacco-selling retailers, including convenience stores, pharmacies and supermarkets, located near campuses were assessed. METHODS Trained observers completed annual point-of-sale assessments. RESULTS The percentage of stores selling (81.4% to 58.6%; p < .0001) and advertising snus (80.1% to 53.11%; p < .0001) significantly decreased over time. Convenience stores increased promotions of cigarettes (65.4% to 72.8%; p = 0.04) and SLT (3.1% to 23.3%; p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS Off-campus environments have abundant tobacco availability and marketing. Colleges should collaborate with state and local tobacco control advocates to address tobacco promotion near campuses to potentially decrease product appeal and access among young adults.

Tobacco product use and mental health status among young adults. Addict Behav 2018; 77:67-72. Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with mental health conditions represent a priority population for tobacco control. This population smokes cigarettes at disproportionately higher rates than the general population, but less is known about the relationship between non-cigarette tobacco use and mental health status. METHOD In 2013, 2370 young adults recruited from 11 colleges in North Carolina and Virginia completed an online survey on tobacco use. We compared past 6-month self-reported mental health diagnosis, past 30-day depression score, and past 7-day stress score to past 30-day cigarette, e-cigarette, waterpipe, cigar, and smokeless tobacco use. Models adjusted for age, gender, race, ethnicity, and mother's education. Non-cigarette products were also adjusted for past 30-day cigarette use. RESULTS Among participants, 249 (10.5%) reported a mental health diagnosis, most commonly depression (5.5%), ADHD/ADD (4.5%), and anxiety (0.8%). Those who reported a mental health diagnosis had greater odds of using cigarettes (AOR=1.55; CI=1.01, 2.27). Mean stress score was 16.0 (SD=6.9) of possible 40. Higher stress scale score was associated with increased odds of e-cigarette (AOR=1.03; CI=1.01, 1.05), waterpipe (AOR=1.04; CI=1.01, 1.06), and cigarette (AOR=1.02; CI=1.00, 1.04) use. Mean depression score was 7.2 (SD=5.6) of possible 33. Higher depression scale score was associated with increased odds for e-cigarette (AOR=1.04; CI=1.01, 1.08) and cigarette (AOR=1.03; CI=1.01, 1.06) use. CONCLUSION Findings in this study provide further evidence of a potential relationship between non-cigarette tobacco products and mental health status. Tobacco control efforts aimed at reducing tobacco use disparities among mental health populations should focus on non-cigarette tobacco products in addition to cigarettes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug by college students. Prior studies have established an association between marijuana use and poor academic performance in college, but research on the frequency of marijuana use over the entire college career is limited. The study objective was to examine the association of marijuana use trajectories on academic outcomes, including senior year enrollment, plans to graduate on time, and GPA. METHODS Data were collected from a cohort of 3146 students from 11 colleges in North Carolina and Virginia at six time points across the college career. Group-based trajectory models were used to characterize longitudinal marijuana use patterns during college. Associations between marijuana trajectory groups and academic outcomes were modeled using random-effects linear and logistic regressions. RESULTS Five marijuana trajectory groups were identified: non-users (69.0%), infrequent users (16.6%), decreasing users (4.7%), increasing users (5.8%), and frequent users (3.9%). Decreasing users and frequent users were more likely to drop out of college and plan to delay graduation when compared to non-users. All marijuana user groups reported lower GPAs, on average, than non-users. CONCLUSION These results identify marijuana use patterns that put students at risk for poor academic performance in college. Students who use marijuana frequently at the beginning of the college career are especially at risk for lower academic achievement than non-users, suggesting that early intervention is critical.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As the tobacco market expands, so too have the opportunities for youth to be introduced to nicotine. The goal of this study was to identify product choice for initial tobacco trial, correlates associated with product choice, and the relationship between first product and current cigarette smoking among college students. METHODS A cross-sectional web survey of 3146 first-year students at 11 universities in North Carolina and Virginia was conducted in fall 2010. RESULTS Weighted prevalence of ever use of tobacco was 48.6%. Cigarettes were the most common first product (37.9%), followed by cigars (29.3%), hookahs (24.6%), smokeless tobacco (6.1%), and bidis/kreteks (2.2%). Two thirds (65%) of current smokers initiated with cigarettes, but 16.4% started with cigars, 11.1% with hookahs, 5.7% with smokeless, and 1.7% with bidis/kreteks. Females were more likely to report their first product was cigarettes and hookahs, while males were more likely to start with cigars and smokeless tobacco. Compared to those whose first product trial occurred after the age of 18, younger age of initiation (17years or younger) was associated with cigarettes and smokeless as first products, while older age of initiation (18 or older) was associated with starting with hookahs and cigars. Dual or poly tobacco use was more common among those who initiated with hookahs and smokeless tobacco. CONCLUSIONS While over a third of students used cigarettes first, two thirds started with a non-cigarette product. Just about a third of current cigarette smokers initiated with a non-cigarette product, suggesting that those non-cigarette products may have facilitated escalation to cigarettes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Significant changes in the tobacco industry have led to heightened concern about co-use of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (SLT) products. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess whether male cigarette smokers who also used SLT products, in the first semester of their first year of college, were more or less likely than male cigarette smokers who did not use SLT products to still be smoking by the first semester of their senior year. METHODS Using a longitudinal, observational study, we followed a cohort of undergraduate students from 11 four-year universities in North Carolina and Virginia through their college career. Mixed-effects logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the likelihood of being a current smoker fall of senior year for male students who used both cigarettes and SLT at baseline, compared to those who only smoked cigarettes, after adjustment for potential confounders (n = 274). RESULTS At baseline, 67.2% of participants were smoking cigarettes only (no SLT use) and 32.8% were dual users (cigarettes and SLT). A total of 62% were still smoking at senior year. Dual users were 30% more likely to be current smokers senior year compared to cigarette only users, although this difference was not statistically significant. Having at least one friend who smoked cigarettes and heavier cigarette smoking at baseline were significantly related to senior year smoking. CONCLUSIONS Our findings do not support the argument that SLT use may help male college smokers discontinue their smoking habit. In fact, it may contribute to smoking persistence.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION College youth susceptible to waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) represent an important target to intervene upon in order to prevent their uptake of this product. This study examined the performance of a 4-item susceptibility measure to WTS to predict future waterpipe use and correlates of susceptibility. METHODS A cohort of college students from 11 university campuses in North Carolina and Virginia completed an online survey in 2012 and again in 2013 that assessed WTS susceptibility and subsequent waterpipe use. Tobacco use, marijuana use, binge drinking, and sensation seeking were also assessed. RESULTS Overall, 964 students who reported having never used waterpipe tobacco in 2012 completed the online surveys both years. Overall, about 27% of college youth were susceptible to WTS each year. Participants susceptible in 2012 were 2.5 times more likely to report having used waterpipe tobacco the subsequent year than non-susceptible participants after controlling for significant correlates of waterpipe use. Correlates of susceptibility were: being male, past 30 day cigarette smoking, use of other tobacco products, binge drinking and marijuana use, as well as higher sensation seeking. CONCLUSIONS A 4-item WTS susceptibility measure predicts future WTS. This measure can be used to identify and intervene upon susceptible college youth to curb further exploration of WTS. Indeed, a nontrivial proportion of college students found susceptible go on to use waterpipe tobacco within a year.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We assessed the impact of trying electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) on future cigarette smoking in a sample of smokers enrolled in college. METHODS In this longitudinal study, first-semester college students at 7 colleges in North Carolina and 4 in Virginia completed a baseline survey and 5 follow-up surveys between fall 2010 and fall 2013. Current cigarette smoking at wave 6 was the primary outcome. Participants (n = 271) reported current cigarette smoking at baseline and no history of e-cigarette use. We measured trying e-cigarettes at each wave, defined as use in the past 6 months. RESULTS By wave 5, 43.5% had tried e-cigarettes. Even after controlling for other variables associated with cigarette smoking, trying e-cigarettes was a significant predictor of cigarette smoking at wave 6 (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.48; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.32, 4.66), as were friends' cigarette smoking (AOR = 4.20; 95% CI = 2.22, 7.96) and lifetime use of other tobacco products (AOR = 1.63; 95% CI = 1.22, 2.17). CONCLUSIONS Trying e-cigarettes during college did not deter cigarette smoking and may have contributed to continued smoking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND K2 and Spice consist of an herbal blend of plant matter and chemical synthetic cannabinoids. These substances emerged in the early 2000s as a popular alternative to marijuana among youth and young adults. OBJECTIVES This study sought to identify rates and correlates of K2 and Spice at college entry and first use during college. METHODS In Fall 2010, 3146 students at 11 colleges in North Carolina and Virginia were recruited to participate in a longitudinal cohort survey. The cohort was invited to participate in a total of six surveys over their college career. Random-effects logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with lifetime K2 and Spice use at college entry and first use during college, adjusting for clustering within schools and sample weights. RESULTS Weighted lifetime prevalence of K2 and Spice use at college entry was 7.6%. An additional 6.6% of students reported first use during college. By the cohort's fourth year, 17.0% reported lifetime K2 and Spice use. While lifetime prevalence increased, past 6-month prevalence decreased substantially over time. K2 and Spice use at college entry was associated with sensation seeking; hookah, marijuana, and illicit drug use; and low religiosity. First use during college was associated with having a father with less than a four-year degree; alcohol and hookah use. CONCLUSION Universities should ensure that prevention efforts address current substance use, including K2/Spice, and that treatment options are available for first year students who use substances.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION E-cigarettes are relatively new products that simulate the smoking experience. This descriptive study assessed changes in e-cigarette availability and promotions among retailers in 11 college communities in North Carolina and Virginia during a 1-year period. METHODS During the spring of 2012 and 2013, observers completed assessments in 320 tobacco-selling retailers, including grocery and convenience stores, pharmacies, and tobacco shops. Assessors collected e-cigarette availability, advertising, price, and promotions. RESULTS E-cigarette availability increased among retailers from 24.7% in 2012 to 59.9% in 2013. They were available in the form of disposables and reusable kits and were most frequently available in tobacco shops, convenience stores, and pharmacies. The average price for disposables was $9.70 (SD = 1.07) in 2012 and $9.61 (SD = 2.10) in 2013; the average price for kits was $39.58 (SD = 15.79) in 2012 and $32.59 (SD = 18.65) in 2013. The presence of interior advertising increased from 12.7% to 50.6% (p < .0001), and the presence of exterior advertising increased from 7.6% to 22.8% (p = .0002). Convenience stores with gas (16.4%-70.4%; p < .0001) and without gas (6.0%-48.4%; p < .0001) had significant increases in the presence of interior advertising. Convenience stores with gas also had a significant increase in the presence of exterior advertising (8.2%-33.3%; p < .0001). Only 3% of retailers offered price promotions. CONCLUSIONS Availability of e-cigarettes, including rechargeable kits and disposables, more than doubled during the study. The presence of interior and exterior advertising also significantly increased. Results underscore the need for further surveillance to understand how these environmental characteristics impact individual exposure and use of e-cigarettes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dissolvable tobacco products (DTPs) have been introduced into test markets in the U.S. We sought to gauge the level of interest in trying these products and correlates of interest among potential consumers. METHODS A web-based survey of freshman at 11 universities in North Carolina and Virginia was conducted in fall 2010. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify correlates of students' likelihood to try DTPs if offered a free sample. RESULTS Weighted prevalence of likelihood to try DTPs was 3.7%. Significant correlates of likelihood to try included male gender, current cigarette smoking, current snus use, sensation seeking, lifetime illicit drug use, and perceived health risk of using DTPs. Among current smokers, current snus use, current use of chewing tobacco, and considering quitting smoking were associated with likelihood to try DTPs. CONCLUSIONS While overall interest in trying these products was low, current users of cigarettes and snus were much more likely than others in trying a free sample. Some current smokers may consider DTPs to be an aid to smoking cessation, although the population-level impact of introducing these products is unknown.
