Stuck in Unhealthy Places: How Entering, Exiting, and Remaining in Poor and Nonpoor Neighborhoods Is Associated with Obesity during the Transition to Adulthood

Longitudinal Exposure to Neighborhood Concentrated Poverty Contributes to Differences in Adiposity in Midlife Women

Background: Neighborhood poverty is associated with adiposity in women, though longitudinal designs, annually collected residential histories, objectively collected anthropometric measures, and geographically diverse samples of midlife women remain limited. Objective: To investigate whether longitudinal exposure to neighborhood concentrated poverty is associated with differences in body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) among 2,328 midlife women (age 42-52 years at baseline) from 6 U.S. cities enrolled in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) from 1996 to 2007. Methods: Residential addresses and adiposity measures were collected at approximately annual intervals from the baseline visit through a 10-year follow-up. We used census poverty data and local spatial statistics to identify hot-spots of high concentrated poverty areas and cold-spots of low concentrated poverty located within each SWAN site region, and used linear mixed-effect models to estimate percentage differences (95% confidence interval [CI]) in average BMI and WC levels between neighborhood concentrated poverty categories. Results: After adjusting for individual-level sociodemographics, health-related factors, and residential mobility, compared to residents of moderate concentrated poverty communities, women living in site-specific hot-spots of high concentrated poverty had 1.5% higher (95% CI: 0.6, 2.3) BMI and 1.3% higher (95% CI: 0.5, 2.0) WC levels, whereas women living in cold-spots of low concentrated poverty had 0.7% lower (95% CI: -1.2, -0.1) BMI and 0.3% lower (95% CI: -0.8, 0.2) WC. Site-stratified results remained in largely similar directions to overall estimates, despite wide CIs and small sample sizes. Conclusions: Longitudinal exposure to neighborhood concentrated poverty is associated with slightly higher BMI and WC among women across midlife.

Exposure to neighborhood poverty from adolescence through emerging adulthood and sleep duration in US adults

Does exposure to neighborhood poverty from adolescence to early adulthood have differential influence on sleep duration across racial/ethnic groups? We used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health that consisted of 6756 Non-Hispanic (NH) White respondents, 2471 NH Black respondents, and 2000 Hispanic respondents and multinomial logistic models to predict respondent reported sleep duration based on exposure to neighborhood poverty during adolescence and adulthood. Results indicated that neighborhood poverty exposure was related to short sleep duration among NH White respondents only. We discuss these results in relation to coping, resilience, and White psychology.

Longitudinal exposure to neighborhood poverty and obesity risk in emerging adulthood

This study uses data from the longitudinal Panel Study of Income Dynamics data and its Transition to Adulthood (TA) Study (2005-2017), in conjunction with decades of neighborhood-level data from the U.S. decennial census and American Community Survey, to examine the relationship between individuals' neighborhood poverty exposure trajectories in childhood and the likelihood of obesity in emerging adulthood. Latent growth mixture models reveal that exposure to neighborhood poverty differs considerably for white and nonwhite individuals over their childhood life course. Durable exposure to neighborhood poverty confers greater subsequent obesity risks in emerging adulthood than transitory experiences of neighborhood poverty. Racial differences in the changing and persistent trajectories of neighborhood poverty help explain part of the racial differences in obesity risks. Among nonwhites, and compared to consistent nonpoor neighborhood conditions, both durable and transitory neighborhood poverty exposures are significantly associated with higher obesity risks. This study suggests that a theoretical framework that integrates key elements of the life-course perspective is helpful to uncover the individual and structural pathways through which neighborhood histories in poverty shape population health in general.

Explaining obesity disparities by urbanicity, 2006 to 2016: A decomposition analysis

OBJECTIVE

A large, and potentially growing, disparity in obesity prevalence exists between large central metros and less urban United States counties. This study examines its key predictors.

METHODS

Using a rich county-year data set spanning 2006 to 2016, the authors conducted a Gelbach decomposition to examine the relative importance of demographic, socioeconomic, environmental, and behavioral factors in shaping the baseline obesity gap and the growth rate over time between large central metros and other counties.

RESULTS

Predictors included in this model explain almost the entire obesity gap between large central metros and other counties in the baseline year but can explain only ~32% of the growing gap. At baseline, demographic predictors explain more than half the obesity gap, and socioeconomic and behavioral predictors explain the other half. Behavioral and socioeconomic predictors explain more than half the growing gap over time whereas controlling for environmental and demographic predictors decreases the obesity gap by urbanicity over time.

CONCLUSIONS

Results suggest policy makers should prioritize interventions targeting health behaviors of residents in non-large central metros to slow the growth of the obesity gap between large central metros and other counties. However, to fundamentally eliminate the obesity gap, in addition to improving health behaviors, policies addressing socioeconomic inequalities are needed.

Considering social determinants of health in the relationship between physical activity and exercise engagement and cognitive impairment among persons with epilepsy

Many persons with epilepsy (PWE) are not as active or physically fit as compared to the general population. This lack of engagement in physical activity has been attributed to a number of factors, few of which take into consideration the social determinants of health (SDH). In this perspective, we highlight how SDH are considered in explaining lower levels of physical activity engagement among PWE, particularly for those experiencing cognitive impairment. We also discuss how these data can be applied in research to yield a greater impact on the quality of life among PWE. Consideration of SDH allows for increased understanding of how cognition can be both a determinant of physical activity and an outcome of environments conducive to physical activity in PWE.

Theoretical Approaches to Research on the Social Determinants of Obesity

This article reviews selected theoretical approaches explaining the social determinants of obesity. The significance of this topic for medicine, public health, and other areas of obesity-related research is the growing body of evidence showing that the social environment is often key to understanding the risk of obesity. A review of relevant literature and analysis of empirical evidence linking theory to data in studies of obesity was performed. Several studies show that differences in social behavior and living conditions associated with SES, lifestyles, inequality, and other social variables have important roles in weight gain. Because the social determinants of obesity often begin in childhood, life course theory and its concepts of cumulative advantage/disadvantage and cumulative inequality are initially reviewed, followed by a discussion of how fundamental cause theory, health lifestyle theory, and cultural capital theory can be applied to obesity research. The stress process model and the concepts of social networks and neighborhood disadvantage concerning obesity are also included.

Neighborhood Conditions and Type 2 Diabetes Risk among Latino Adolescents with Obesity in Phoenix

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) has reached epidemic levels among the pediatric population. Furthermore, disparities in T2D among youth are distributed in a manner that reflects the social inequality between population sub-groups. Here, we investigated the neighborhood determinants of T2D risk among a sample of Latino adolescents with obesity residing in Phoenix, Arizona (n = 133). In doing so we linked together four separate contextual data sources: the American Community Survey, the United States Department of Agriculture Food Access Research Atlas, the Arizona Healthy Community Map, and the National Neighborhood Data Archive to systematically analyze how and which neighborhood characteristics were associated with T2D risk factors as measured by fasting and 2-h glucose following a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test. Using linear regression models with and without individual/household covariates, we investigated how twenty-two housing and transportation sociodemographic and built and food environment characteristics were independently and jointly associated with T2D risk. The main finding from these analyses was the strong association between the density of fast food restaurants and 2-h glucose values (b = 2.42, p < 0.01). This association was independent of individual, household, and other neighborhood characteristics. Our results contribute to an increasingly robust literature demonstrating the deleterious influence of the neighborhood food environment, especially fast food, for T2D risk among Latino youth.

Neighborhood structural disadvantage and biological aging in a sample of Black middle age and young adults

OBJECTIVES

Research on the social determinants of health has suggested that neighborhood disadvantage may undermine healthy aging and is particularly relevant for understanding health disparities. Recently, this work has examined deoxyribonucleic acid methylation (DNAm)-based measures of biological aging to understand the risk factors for morbidity and mortality. However, it is unknown whether neighborhood disadvantage is related to different indices of DNAm-based aging among Black Americans and whether such neighborhood effects vary as a function of age or gender.

METHODS

Our analyses of a Black American sample included 448 young adults and 493 middle-aged adults. We measured neighborhood disadvantage using the Area Deprivation Index at the census block group level. DNAm-based accelerated aging indices were measured using established procedures. Regressions with clustered standard errors were used for the analysis.

RESULTS

Neighborhood disadvantage was independently associated with acceleration in PhenoAge, GrimAge, and DunedinPoAm, among young and middle-aged adults. Further, there was no evidence that gender conditioned the effects of neighborhood disadvantage on the aging indices.

CONCLUSIONS

Regardless of age groups or gender, accelerated biological aging among Black Americans is partly rooted in differences in neighborhood disadvantage. From a policy standpoint, our findings suggest that programs that decrease neighborhood disadvantage are likely to increase healthy aging, especially among Black Americans.

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Disadvantage and Childhood Body Mass Index Trajectories From Birth to 7 Years of Age

BACKGROUND

The epidemic of increasing childhood overweight and obesity is a major global health concern, with local contextual factors identified as possible contributors. Robust research is needed to establish an evidence base supporting health policy decisions to reverse the trend. We aimed to examine the association between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and trajectories of body mass index (BMI) from birth to age 7.

METHODS

The present study included 11,023 children born within the Southwest Finland Birth Cohort who were free of severe conditions affecting growth with adequate exposure and growth data. We obtained child growth data until school age from municipal follow-up clinics. We based cumulative childhood neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage on the average annual income, unemployment, and level of education in a residential area defined using a geographic grid at a spatial resolution of 250 m by 250 m.

RESULTS

Cumulative neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage was associated with distinct childhood BMI z score trajectories from birth to age 7. Despite being born in the lowest BMI z scores, children growing up in disadvantaged neighborhoods subsequently exhibited a trajectory of increasing BMI z scores starting at 4 years of age, ending up with a higher risk of overweight at the end of the follow-up (30%) as compared with children living in more affluent neighborhoods (22%). The corresponding risk of obesity was 5 % for those in affluent neighborhoods and 9 % and those in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

CONCLUSION

Cumulative exposure to neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage is independently associated with unfavorable BMI development and obesity in childhood.

Continuity and change in neighborhood disadvantage and adolescent depression and anxiety

We used data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study which includes a sample of adolescents of age 15 at the most recent wave (between 2014 and 2017) from mainly low-income urban families in the United States, to examine the association between neighborhood poverty entries and exits and adolescent depression and anxiety. In addition, we examined whether these associations differed by gender. Adolescents who consistently lived in disadvantaged neighborhoods had the highest level of depression and anxiety. Those who entered poor neighborhoods were more depressed than those who never lived in poor neighborhoods. Those who exited poor neighborhoods showed no significant difference in depression and anxiety compared to those never lived in poor neighborhoods. Furthermore, these associations applied to adolescent girls only and were not statistically significant for boys. The results suggest that neighborhood poverty has cumulative negative impacts on adolescent mental health and disproportionally affects adolescent girls. Reducing neighborhood poverty would substantially improve the health of adolescents, especially girls, which would reduce health disparities.

Where Do Online Games Fit into the Health Behaviour Ecology of Emerging Adults: A Scoping Review

Online video games are a common pastime for emerging adults (EAs). EAs are an age group that is of interest in health communication because habits formed during this life stage can cause or prevent disease later in life. Guided by three research questions, this scoping review identifies the current state of research into socio-ecological influences on physical activity and diet behaviours of EAs. The review also examines the role that online video games play within this behavioural ecology. In total, 112 articles were found that focused on behavioural ecological influences for physical activity and diet behaviour among EAs. Seven of these articles focused on the impact of online video games, although only in conjunction with their influence on physical activity, identifying a gap in understanding the influence of online games on diet. Results show that online video games are currently under-researched in terms of impacts on physical activity and diet despite the prevalence of the use of these games within the EA cohort.

A life course perspective on BMI in rural America

Rural Americans are substantially more likely to be obese than their urban counterparts. A life course perspective offers insights into how growing up in rural areas may affect weight in young adulthood. Using data from the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics, this study follows the residential trajectories of 3157 respondents since birth. Living in a rural area during the critical period of early childhood (before age two) is predictive of higher BMI, while residence in later childhood and adolescence is not. Improving the health and wellbeing of rural mothers and infants could potentially help address the roots of rural obesity.

Challenges and Opportunities for the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease Among Young Adults: Report From a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Working Group

Improvements in cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates among young adults in the past 2 decades have been offset by increasing racial/ethnic and gender disparities, persistence of unhealthy lifestyle habits, overweight and obesity, and other CVD risk factors. To enhance the promotion of cardiovascular health among young adults 18 to 39 years old, the medical and broader public health community must understand the biological, interpersonal, and behavioral features of this life stage. Therefore, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, with support from the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research, convened a 2-day workshop in Bethesda, Maryland, in September 2017 to identify research challenges and opportunities related to the cardiovascular health of young adults. The current generation of young adults live in an environment undergoing substantial economic, social, and technological transformations, differentiating them from prior research cohorts of young adults. Although the accumulation of clinical and behavioral risk factors for CVD begins early in life, and research suggests early risk is an important determinant of future events, few trials have studied prevention and treatment of CVD in participants <40 years old. Building an evidence base for CVD prevention in this population will require the engagement of young adults, who are often disconnected from the healthcare system and may not prioritize long-term health. These changes demand a repositioning of existing evidence-based treatments to accommodate new sociotechnical contexts. In this article, the authors review the recent literature and current research opportunities to advance the cardiovascular health of today's young adults.

Neighborhood Poverty and Physical Health at Midlife: The Role of Life-Course Exposure

Studies of the effect of neighborhood poverty on health are dominated by research designs that measure neighborhood poverty at a single point in time, ignoring the potential influence of exposure to neighborhood poverty over the life course. Applying latent class analysis to restricted residential history data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 Cohort, we identify four trajectories of life-course exposure to high-poverty neighborhoods between adolescence and midlife and then examine how these groups differ in their physical health conditions (SF-12 score) and self-rated health at around age 40. Linear and logistic regression analyses show that life-course exposure to high-poverty neighborhoods is a stronger predictor of midlife physical health than are point-in-time measures of neighborhood poverty observed during either adolescence or midlife. Our findings suggest that a life-course approach can enhance our understanding of how neighborhood poverty affects physical health.

Associations between the Neighborhood Social Environment and Obesity Among Adolescents: Do Physical Activity, Screen Time, and Sleep Play a Role?

This study examines: (1) the association between the neighborhood social environment and obesity among adolescents, (2) whether physical activity, screen time, and short sleep mediates this association, and (3) examine sex differences. Participants (n=12,692; age 11-19 years old) came from Waves I and II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Neighborhood social disorganization and socioeconomic status (NSES) measures were associated with obesity adjusting for sex, race, age, parental education, and urbanicity. Screen time mediated NSES and obesity. Very short sleep duration (<6 hours) mediated social disorganization and obesity among females only. Findings suggest improving neighborhood social conditions may reduce the risk for obesity.

Neighborhoods and health during the transition to adulthood: A scoping review

Research suggests that neighborhoods play an important role in shaping health outcomes across the life course, but the neighborhood-health link during the transition to adulthood period (18-29 years) is not well studied. A scoping review of 24 studies used thematic analysis to examine the theoretical and methodological approaches of the neighborhood-health literature during this period. Themes illustrate the varied approaches used in this research, including diversity in how neighborhood is defined, theoretical variation regarding the importance of the transition period and the neighborhood-health link, and the importance of gender and race/ethnicity to this area of study. While the literature on this topic is fragmented, with varied definitions and minimal theoretical coherence, all studies found some degree of support for the relationship between neighborhoods and health during the transition to adulthood. Our analysis suggests that future research should focus on developing a theoretical foundation for these relationships in order to clarify key concepts and advance a science to better understand how and why neighborhoods affect health during this period.

Using photovoice to explore social determinants of obesity in two underserved communities in the southeast

Over the past 25 years, the adult obesity rate in the U.S. has increased 70%, with obesity placing a disproportionate chronic disease burden on African Americans. Using Photovoice methodology, this study aimed to: (1) explore the social determinants contributing to obesity from the perspectives of residents of two low-income municipalities in Birmingham, Alabama with varying levels of segregation, (2) better understand residents' perceptions of contributors to obesity in their communities, and (3) examine residents' perceptions of interventions that might be effective in promoting positive change. Focus groups (N=10) segmented by race and community were conducted by trained moderators. Transcriptions were analyzed by theoretical thematic analysis. The study design and data analysis analyses were guided by a conceptual framework based on the Social Determinants of Obesity model. Findings from this study lend support to the efficacy of the conceptual framework as a multilevel approach describing obesity disparities in the south. Regardless of community and race, participants believed that elements of their built environment, such as fast food restaurants and unsafe walking conditions, contributed to obesity, and that schools and churches should play an active role in addressing the issue.

Downward Neighborhood Poverty Mobility during Childhood Is Associated with Child Asthma: Evidence from the Geographic Research on Wellbeing (GROW) Survey

Causal evidence regarding neighborhood effects on health remains tenuous. Given that children have little agency in deciding where they live and spend proportionally more of their lives in neighborhoods than adults, their exposure to neighborhood conditions could make their health particularly sensitive to neighborhood effects. In this paper, we examine the relationship between exposure to poor neighborhoods from birth to ages 4-10 and childhood asthma. We used data from the 2003-2007 California Maternal Infant and Health Assessment (MIHA) and the 2012-2013 Geographic Research on Wellbeing (GROW) survey (N = 2619 mother/child dyads) to fit relative risks of asthma for children who experience different types of neighborhood poverty mobility using Poisson regression controlling for individual-level demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, and neighborhood satisfaction. Our results demonstrate that [1] living in a poor neighborhood at baseline and follow-up and [2] moving into a poor neighborhood were each associated with higher risk of asthma, compared with children not living in a poor neighborhood at either time. Exposure to impoverished neighborhoods and downward neighborhood poverty mobility matters for children's health, particularly for asthma. Public health practitioners and policymakers need to address downward neighborhood economic mobility, in addition to downward family economic mobility, in order to improve children's health.

Socioeconomic Differences and the Potential Role of Tribes in Young People's Food and Drink Purchasing Outside School at Lunchtime

Socioeconomic deprivation has been linked to food consumption practices, but studies investigating the food environment around schools provide mixed findings. Peer influence and marketing cues are considered important influencers of young people's behaviors. This study used a tribal theory lens to investigate the factors affecting pupils' purchasing and consumption of food/drinks outside schools at lunchtime. A survey was conducted with 243 pupils from seven UK secondary schools of differing socioeconomic status (SES). A purchasing recall questionnaire (PRQ) was developed and administered online at the participating schools to capture food and drink purchasing, intake, and expenditure. No significant differences were found in terms of energy and nutrients consumed or food/drink expenditure between pupils from schools of lower and higher SES. Enjoyment of food shopping with friends was linked with higher food energy intake and spend. Higher susceptibility to peer influence was associated with greater influence from food advertising and endorsements. Without ignoring the impact that SES can have on young people's food choices, we suggest that tribal theory can be additionally used to understand pupils' eating behaviors and we present implications for social marketers and policy makers.

The indelible weight of place: Childhood neighborhood disadvantage, timing of exposure, and obesity across adulthood

I use 28 (1986-2014) years of restricted geocoded NLSY tract-level data and find positive associations between exposure to childhood neighborhood disadvantage and adult obesity and BMI among individuals growing up and entering adulthood during the rise of obesity in the United States. Sibling fixed effects and cousin fixed effects models partially address unobserved confounding nested in the nuclear as well as extended family. Furthermore, exposure to neighborhood disadvantage in adolescence is most salient, providing insight into when policy intervention may be most effective. Results are robust to alternative specifications for neighborhood disadvantage, ages of exposure, and to alternative sampling strategies.

Neighborhood disadvantage across the transition from adolescence to adulthood and risk of metabolic syndrome

This study investigates the association between neighborhood disadvantage from adolescence to young adulthood and metabolic syndrome using a life course epidemiology framework. Data from the United States-based National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (n = 9500) and a structural equation modeling approach were used to test neighborhood disadvantage across adolescence, emerging adulthood, and young adulthood in relation to metabolic syndrome. Adolescent neighborhood disadvantage was directly associated with metabolic syndrome in young adulthood. Evidence supporting an indirect association between adolescent neighborhood disadvantage and adult metabolic syndrome was not supported. Efforts to improve cardiometabolic health may benefit from strategies earlier in life.

The Moving to Health (M2H) approach to natural experiment research: A paradigm shift for studies on built environment and health

Improving the built environment (BE) is viewed as one strategy to improve community diets and health. The present goal is to review the literature on the effects of BE on health, highlight its limitations, and explore the growing use of natural experiments in BE research, such as the advent of new supermarkets, revitalized parks, or new transportation systems. Based on recent studies on movers, a paradigm shift in built-environment health research may be imminent. Following the classic Moving to Opportunity study in the US, the present Moving to Health (M2H) strategy takes advantage of the fact that changing residential location can entail overnight changes in multiple BE variables. The necessary conditions for applying the M2H strategy to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases and to large longitudinal cohorts are outlined below. Also outlined are significant limitations of this approach, including the use of electronic medical records in lieu of survey data. The key research question is whether documented changes in BE exposure can be linked to changes in health outcomes in a causal manner. The use of geo-localized clinical information from regional health care systems should permit new insights into the social and environmental determinants of health.

Neighborhood and Social Environmental Influences on Child Chronic Disease Prevalence

We investigate how distinct residential environments uniquely influence chronic child disease. Aggregating over 200,000 pediatric geocoded medical records to the census tract of residence and linking them to neighborhood-level measures, we use multiple data analysis techniques to assess how heterogeneous exposures of social and environmental neighborhood conditions influence an index of child chronic disease (CCD) prevalence for the neighborhood. We find there is a graded relationship between degree of overall neighborhood disadvantage and children's chronic disease such that the highest neighborhood CCD scores reside in communities with the highest concentrated disadvantage. Finally, results show that higher levels of neighborhood concentrated disadvantage and air pollution exposure associate with higher risks of having at least one chronic condition for children after also considering their individual- and family-level characteristics. Overall, our analysis serves as a comprehensive start for future researchers interested in assessing which neighborhood factors matter most for child chronic health conditions.

Personal, behavioral, and environmental predictors of healthy weight maintenance during the transition to adulthood

There is a high prevalence of overweight among U.S. young adults and the intergenerational implications of excess weight gain at this life stage are great. We used Project EAT (Eating and Activity in Teens and Young Adults) study data to identify personal, behavioral, and environmental factors that predicted healthy weight maintenance during the transition from adolescence to adulthood and as individuals progressed from the third to fourth decade of life. The sample included 1120 young adults who were secondary school students in Minneapolis-St. Paul at Time 1 (1998-1999) and responded at follow-ups in 2008-2009 and 2015-2016. Results showed individual factors and multiple environmental factors contribute to maintenance. The most consistent findings suggest that having higher body satisfaction and avoiding unhealthy weight control behaviors (e.g., skipping meals) and dieting are protective against excess weight gain for women and men. For example, the odds ratio associated with a one standard deviation increase in the probability of using an extreme weight control behavior from adolescence and adulthood was 0.67 (CI: 0.54, 0.84) among women and 0.34 (CI: 0.12, 0.96) among men indicating decreased odds of maintaining a healthy weight. Social support for healthy eating and physical activity were protective whereas close relationships with individuals who were dieting (e.g., parents, significant others) reduced the likelihood of maintaining a healthy weight. Primary prevention strategies should continue beyond adolescence and involve peer social support to encourage young people at a healthy weight to be satisfied with their shape/size and avoid restrictive weight control behaviors.

Historical neighborhood poverty trajectories and child sleep

OBJECTIVES

To determine whether historical neighborhood poverty measures are associated with mothers' reports of their children's sleep duration and to compare results from historical neighborhood poverty measures to contemporaneous measures of neighborhood poverty.

DESIGN

The Geographic Research on Wellbeing (GROW) study is a follow-up survey of mothers who gave birth between 2003 and 2007. GROW mothers assessed their own and their children's health and health behaviors 5-10 years later (2012-2013).

We categorized children's sleep as adequate or inadequate using clinical age-specific guidelines and based on mothers' reports of their child's sleep duration. We conducted a latent class analysis to identify historical poverty classes for all California census tracts using data from 1970 to 2005-2009, and we categorized current neighborhood poverty based on data from 2005 to 2009 only. We then assigned children to different neighborhood exposure classes based on their neighborhood of residence at birth and follow-up.

RESULTS

Logistic models indicated that net of controls for demographics, child behavior and health characteristics, mother characteristics, and household socioeconomic status, children who grew up in historically low (OR: 0.64, 95% confidence interval=0.45-0.92) or historically moderate poverty classes (OR: 0.68, 95% confidence interval=0.48-0.98) had lower odds of inadequate sleep duration compared with children who grew up in historically high poverty. We show that the historical specification of neighborhood poverty remained significant despite controls, whereas contemporaneous measures of neighborhood poverty did not.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate strong associations between historical neighborhood poverty and child sleep duration.

Long-term neighborhood poverty trajectories and obesity in a sample of california mothers

Neighborhoods (and people) are not static, and are instead shaped by dynamic long-term processes of change (and mobility). Using the Geographic Research on Wellbeing survey, a population-based sample of 2339 Californian mothers, we characterize then investigate how long-term latent neighborhood poverty trajectories predict the likelihood of obesity, taking into account short-term individual residential mobility. We find that, net of individual and neighborhood-level controls, living in or moving to tracts that experienced long-term low poverty was associated with lower odds of being obese relative to living in tracts characterized by long-term high poverty.

Associations of Continuity and Change in Early Neighborhood Poverty With Adult Cardiometabolic Biomarkers in the United States: Results From the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, 1995-2008

Limitations of extant research on neighborhood disadvantage and health include general reliance on point-in-time neighborhood measures and sensitivity to residential self-selection. Using data from the US Census and the 1995-2008 National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we applied conventional methods and coarsened exact matching to assess how cardiometabolic health varies among those entering, exiting, or remaining in poor and nonpoor neighborhoods. Within the full sample (n = 11,767), we found significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures among those who entered or consistently lived in poor neighborhoods relative to those who never lived in poor neighborhoods. Obesity was similarly more common among those who originated from poor neighborhoods than among those who originated from nonpoor neighborhoods. Having exited poor neighborhoods was associated with lower systolic blood pressure than was consistent residence in low-income communities. Among the matched sample (n = 9,727), results adjusted for confounders and residential self-selection revealed fewer significant contrasts. Compared with peers who had no neighborhood poverty exposure, those who consistently lived in poor neighborhoods had 46% and 52% higher odds of being obese or hypertensive, respectively. Those who exited neighborhood poverty had significantly higher diastolic blood pressures than those who had never lived in poor neighborhoods. These findings underscore the importance of past as well as current residential circumstances for cardiometabolic health.

Individual mental health, life course events and dynamic neighbourhood change during the transition to adulthood

Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, this study examines the relationship between significant changes in neighbourhood poverty during the transition to adulthood and shifts in depressive symptoms. We found that associations between changes in neighbourhood poverty and mental health disappeared after controlling for contemporaneous life course events, specifically transitions associated with intimate relationship building and human capital formation. The exception is a decrease in depressive symptoms for females moving into lower poverty neighbourhoods across the entire transition to adulthood period. We conclude that the impact of moving into significantly higher or lower poverty neighbourhoods during the transition to adulthood is conditioned on age, period and gender and complicated by the occurrence of other significant life course transitions.
