Abstract
Approximately 1 in 3 (or 80 million) Chinese age 60 years or older are living with type 2 diabetes in China. New perspectives are needed to understand the intricate phenomenon of diabetes self-management (DSM) in older Chinese adults. Guided by the expanded Tripartite Model of Self-Management, this study aimed to identify the inter-relationships between the tripartite components simultaneously and their influencing factors. This cross-sectional study included a stratified random sample of 98 community-dwelling adults age 60 or older with type 2 diabetes. Findings revealed distinct predictors for knowledge about DSM, DSM behaviors and coping. There were significant inter-relationships among the tripartite components. The theoretical model was a good fit for the data. This study provides valuable insights into the complex relationships between knowledge about DSM, DSM behaviors, and coping strategies, offering direct implications for improving the health outcomes of older adults with diabetes.

Abstract
We examined how global stress and general stressors of daily life relate to emotional well-being and type 1 diabetes (T1D) outcomes and amplify the effects of diabetes stressors in emerging adults. Two-hundred and seven 18-19-year-olds with T1D (duration 8.47 years) completed the Perceived Stress Scale (global stress) and a daily diary assessing daily diabetes and general stressors, positive and negative affect, self-care behaviors, and blood glucose (BG). Multi-level analyses indicated that global stress and within-person daily general and diabetes stressors were associated with more negative and less positive affect. In addition, general stress (between-person) was associated with more negative affect. Global stress amplified the association between daily diabetes stressors and negative affect, with greater affect reactivity to stress for those experiencing higher global stress. Global stress and both within- and between-person diabetes stressors were associated with lower self-care and higher BG. Emerging adults' general stressors in their daily lives relate to poorer well-being beyond the experience of diabetes stressors.

Abstract
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) "Standards of Care in Diabetes" includes the ADA's current clinical practice recommendations and is intended to provide the components of diabetes care, general treatment goals and guidelines, and tools to evaluate quality of care. Members of the ADA Professional Practice Committee, an interprofessional expert committee, are responsible for updating the Standards of Care annually, or more frequently as warranted. Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is growing evidence that type 2 diabetes (T2D) can be put into remission through lifestyle intervention. Current focus on remission in terms of physiological considerations and biomedical scales, means there is limited understanding of the role psycho-social factors play in moderating the efficacy of lifestyle interventions for T2D remission. In the current review we aimed to synthesise the emerging literature on psycho-social factors associated with T2D remission, specifically from lifestyle interventions. METHODS Five databases (EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL ultimate, PsychINFO and PsycArticles) were searched to identify studies from 2009 onwards that reported remission outcomes from lifestyle interventions in participants ≥ 18years old, with a clinical diagnosis of T2D. Studies included were of an interventional or observational design and restricted to English language. Screening and data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers using prespecified criteria. RESULTS In total 6106 studies were screened, 36 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included. Studies were globally diverse, with 30 (83%) being published ≥ 2017. Psycho-social scales were under-utilised with 22 (67%) of studies failing to include any psycho-social measures. Single arm, prospective studies were most frequently utilised, however study quality was perceived to be heterogeneous. Further disparity in the quality, content and delineation of the psycho-social interventions was also identified. Education and self-monitoring interventions were the most frequently incorporated. Self-monitoring was also identified as an important facilitator to remission, in addition to social support. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that psycho-social factors in T2D remission are under-explored. We have identified a number of methodological issues (comparability, conflicting remission criteria and poorly defined psycho-social interventions) suggesting knowledge gaps which could inform the methodology of future research design. There is significant opportunity for future research to incorporate the social model of disease, conceptualise remission more holistically, and build a more comprehensive evidence base to guide clinical practice.

Abstract
Seizure emergencies and potential emergencies, ranging from seizure clusters to prolonged seizure and status epilepticus, may affect adults with epilepsy despite stable antiseizure therapy. Seizure action plans (SAPs) are designed for patients and their caregivers/care partners to provide guidance on the individualized treatment plan, including response to potential seizure emergencies and appropriate use of rescue therapy. The use of pediatric SAPs is common (typically required by schools), however, most adults with epilepsy do not have a plan. Patient-centered action plans are integral to care for other chronic conditions and may offer insights applicable to the care of adults with epilepsy. This review analyzes the potential benefits of action plans for medical conditions by exploring their utility in conditions such as asthma, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, and opioid overdose. Evidence across these conditions substantiates the value of action plans for patients, and the benefits of adult SAPs in epilepsy are emerging. Because wide implementation of SAPs has faced barriers, other conditions may provide insights that are relevant to implementing SAPs in epilepsy. Based on these analyses, we propose concrete steps to improve the use of SAPs among adults. A recent consensus statement promoting the use of formal SAPs in epilepsy and advances in rescue therapy delivery methods provides support to engage patients around the value of SAPs. The precedent for use of SAPs for pediatric epilepsy patients serves as the foundation to support increased usage in adults. Seizure action plans in the context of improved clinical outcomes are expected to reduce healthcare utilization, improve patient quality of life, and optimize epilepsy management.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to test the effects of a novel diabetes self-management education (DSME) programme focused on multilevel social resources utilization on improving self-management behaviour, social resources utilization and haemoglobin Alc (HbA1c ) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS A randomized controlled design was used. A total of 118 participants with T2DM from two communities were recruited through randomized sampling, and randomly assigned to the novel DSME group or the traditional DSME group. DSME focusing on multilevel social resources utilization was implemented in the novel DSME group. Data were collected at baseline (T0 ), at the end of the intervention (T1 ) and 3 months after the end of intervention (T2 ) from 3 March to 16 November 2014. RESULTS Comparing these two groups, the participants in the novel DSME group reported significantly better improvement in self-management behaviour and social resources utilization at T1 and T2 (all p < 0.01). A significant difference was found in the mean improvement of HbA1c level between the two groups at T2 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The novel DSME programme focused on multilevel social resources utilization can effectively enhance T2DM patients' self-management behaviour and social resource utilization and lower HbA1c levels. More importantly, the effects could last longer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes self-management is crucial for patients with type 1 diabetes, and digital services can support their self-management and facilitate flexible follow-up. The potential of using digital patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures in routine outpatient care is not fully used owing to a lack of adapted PRO measures. OBJECTIVE This study presents the process of identifying and adapting a digital PRO measure for use in clinical diabetes practice and describes the preferred item topics of the adapted PRO measure, as reported by patients and diabetes specialist nurses. METHODS With the involvement of patients, diabetes specialist nurses, management, and researchers, we hosted a series of workshops and 2 dialogue conferences. Scoping searches to identify relevant PRO measures formed the foundation for the process. An in-person dialogue conference was conducted with diabetes specialist nurses as participants, and a digital dialogue conference was conducted with patients with type 1 diabetes as participants. A diabetes-specific PRO measure was translated and adapted to our digital platform. Notes and summaries from the dialogue conferences were imported into NVivo (QSR International) and thematically analyzed as a single combined data set. RESULTS The thematic analysis of the 2 dialogue conferences aimed to explore the views of patients with type 1 diabetes and diabetes specialist nurses on the outcomes necessary to measure. An overarching theme, Ensuring that the PRO measure captures the patients' needs precisely and accurately, in a way that facilitates care and communication with health care personnel, was identified and supported with data from both the patients and diabetes specialist nurses. This theme contained four categories: The need for explanatory text after questions to ensure understanding and accurate response, Capturing individual needs in standardized questions, getting to the heart of the patient's problem, and The questions increase patient reflection. CONCLUSIONS We successfully conducted an iterative process that identified a PRO measure aligned with the topics raised by the diabetes specialist nurses. Similarly, the patients found the PRO measure to be relevant and one that was addressing their needs. Only minor adjustments were necessary when programming the PRO measure in the digital platform. Our management, patients, and diabetes specialist nurses had a valuable impact on the results. User involvement facilitated a specific focus on the clinical requests to be met by PRO measures and how they must be adapted to local and digital platforms. Overall, this has facilitated the current implementation of the adapted digital PRO measure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) can improve clinical and health outcomes of people with diabetes. However, DSMES has been underutilized because of many barriers. We aimed to develop a patient-centered educational aid, SEE-Diabetes (Support-Engage-Empower-Diabetes), that facilitates shared decision-making about DSMES between patient and provider during the follow-up visit. We investigated the information needs to inform the design of the SEE-Diabetes from the providers' perspective. METHODS We conducted an online survey (N = 42) and three focus groups (N = 13) involving providers who have experience managing diabetes in older patients. Survey collected demographics and assessed knowledge of DSMES. During the subsequent focus groups, participants evaluated the Assessment and Plan section of three clinic notes of older people with diabetes. We also demonstrated the potential workflow of DSMES documentation using SEE-Diabetes during clinical practice. RESULTS The survey showed 60% of providers were familiar with DSMES. Focus group findings showed clinic notes should convey concise information at an appropriate reading level, numbered problems, and less medical jargon to improve the readability of clinic notes. Application of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals was suggested to deliver effective diabetes self-care information. CONCLUSIONS Providers should consider adopting validated DSMES guidelines along with goal-setting strategies to provide patient-centered care. The research team will integrate the provider recommendations when we develop SEE-Diabetes.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of Type 1 Diabetes is increasing in pediatrics and diabetes education plays one of the most important role in the management of diabetes, especially in children. However, the related evidence concerned diabetes education is rare in children and adolescents. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the status of diabetes education in hospital, which could help us know the reality of diabetes education. Methods We choose a nurse who is mainly responsible for diabetes education and management in each hospital to fill out the questionnaire. Overall, 98 nurses were enrolled from tertiary children's specialized hospitals and pediatric wards of general tertiary hospitals from Jan 2018 to Dec 2019. Results Of 98 nurses enrolled, 61 (63.3%) nurses from 98 hospitals responded, 39 (63.9%) of them received specialized training in diabetes. There were no differences in education characteristics among regions of China. There were 26(42.6%) hospitals have a full-time nurse for diabetes education or nurses with endocrinology training increased with the number of cases/year (P=0.02 and P=0.009). The use of game-based education, knowledge assessment at discharge did not vary among hospital volumes, and the presence of a psychiatrist (P=0.41, P=0.65, and P=0.85, respectively). Diet management education is the most common (23.0%) difficulty in children diabetes education. Conclusion The level of diabetes education in children and adolescents varied among hospitals, but not among regions in China. There was a lack of resources provided for children and adolescents diabetes education in terms of training and specialized services.

Abstract
To investigate the efficacy of self-management group education versus the standard care for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). An electronic search was performed in nine databases including PubMed for selecting eligible studies. Meta-analysis was used for pooling of the results. Of 3446 records screened, we included ten studies for this systematic review and meta-analysis. Regarding assessment of effectiveness, there was a significant superiority reported in the intervention group when compared to the usual/standard care (standardized mean difference [95% confidence interval] = 0.24 [0.15; 0.32]). The intervention group had a significant reduction in the levels of hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), fasting blood glucose, low-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, and body mass index compared to the usual/standard care (p < 0.05). Moreover, no significant difference was observed in the levels of high-density lipoprotein, systolic blood pressure (SBP), or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) between the two groups (p > 0.05). Self-management group education interventions are recommended in patients with type 2 DM for their effectiveness in different clinical aspects.

Abstract
Children and young people (CYP) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are twice as likely to develop disordered eating (T1DE) and clinical eating disorders than those without. This has significant implications for physical and mental health, with some eating disorders associated with repeated diabetic ketoacidosis and higher HbA1c levels, both of which are life threatening. There is currently limited psychological support for CYP and families with T1D but increasingly, policy and practice are suggesting disordered eating in T1D may be effectively prevented through psychological intervention. We describe the development and theoretical underpinnings of a preventative psychological intervention for parents of CYP aged 11-14, with T1D. The intervention was informed by psychological theory, notably the Information Motivation Behaviour Skills model and Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy. The intervention was co-developed with an expert advisory group of clinicians, and families with T1D. The manualised intervention includes two online group workshops, and supplementary online materials. The intervention continues to evolve, and feasibility findings will inform how best to align the intervention with routine care in NHS diabetes teams. Early detection and intervention are crucial in preventing T1DE, and it is hoped that the current intervention can contribute to improving the psychological and physical wellbeing of young people and families managing T1D.

Abstract
Given the growing prevalence and accelerating cost of diabetes, there is an urgent need to expand strategies in health care that improve access and outcomes and reduce the financial and human burden of the disease. Diabetes care and education specialists (DCESs) are well positioned to assist health care systems with delivery models that enhance diabetes care through evidence-based standards and quality improvement strategies. DCESs have increased opportunities to apply their competencies in primary, specialty, hospital, and acute care settings; accountable care organizations; community settings; research; and academia. Two national certification programs provide an evidence-based foundation for quality in the specialty, with updated competencies guiding practice. This article serves as a call to action for health care systems to integrate specialists in diabetes care and education into diabetes care delivery models and raise awareness of the positive impact these professionals have on the lives of people with diabetes.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION This 6-month, single-center, prospective, open-labeled, randomized trial was designed to investigate whether physicians' diabetes self-management education using an education tool developed by the Japan Association of Diabetes Education and Care and a self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) analyzer improves glycemic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes receiving insulin and SMBG. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants were randomized into intervention (I) and control (C) groups. Both groups received physicians' diabetes self-management education at each hospital visit, whereas the Japan Association of Diabetes Education and Care education tool and the SMBG readings analyzer was used in group I, but not group C. All participants filled out a diabetes treatment-related quality of life form and an original questionnaire on SMBG use with five questions (Q1-Q5) before and after the study period. RESULTS A total of 76 individuals were recruited and randomized. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was significantly improved during the study period in group I, whereas no significant change was observed in group C. The change in HbA1c was greater in group I, although it did not reach statistical significance. The diabetes treatment-related quality of life total score was not changed in either group. Interestingly, the score of Q1 ("How important is SMBG to you?") in the SMBG questionnaire was unchanged in group I, whereas it was significantly decreased in group C. HbA1c change was independently associated with changes in insulin dose and SMBG Q1 score. CONCLUSION Greater HbA1c-lowering by physicians' diabetes self-management education using the Japan Association of Diabetes Education and Care education tool and SMBG analyzer in individuals with type 2 diabetes receiving insulin and SMBG was suggested, but not confirmed.

Following the COVID-19 Experience, Many Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Wish to Use Telemedicine in a Hybrid Format. Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light both challenges and unique opportunities regarding type 1 diabetes (T1D) management, including the usage of telemedicine platforms. Methods: This study was conducted in a tertiary hospital diabetes clinic. All consecutive T1D patients during March and June 2021 were asked to fill out a structured anonymous questionnaire that aimed to determine their preference regarding continuous use of a virtual platform. Results: In total, 126 T1D patients answered the questionnaire, of whom 51% were under the age of 40, half were men, half used insulin pumps, and 69% used continuous glucose monitoring. During the pandemic, the exposure of patients to virtual visits has grown about twofold, from 29% to 53%. Of the respondents, 49% expressed an interest in future usage of a virtual platform, but most of them preferred use in a hybrid manner. We found an association between preference to use telemedicine in the future and younger age, previous virtual platform experience, and confidence in being able to download data. Conclusions: Our data demonstrate that the COVID-19 experience has led to a growing interest of T1D patients in using the hybrid format of telemedicine. However, we still need to better understand who will benefit most from this platform and assess its cost-effectiveness and organization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs are patient-centered, holistic solution that enables it one of the best approaches for improving medication adherence enhanced coping, empowerment and self-efficacy, quality of life (QoL), and lower rates of depression, in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In isolation, DSME strategies have not shown significant improvements to self-care and/or reduction of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU).
AIM: This study sought to determine the effect of modified DSMES on self-care, DFU severity, and QoL in rural Indonesian patients with DFUs.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control group design, in Singkawang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, with a total sample of 60 patients consisting of 30 patients in the intervention group and 30 patients in the control group. The DSMES has been adapted to cover 2 h of content for a period of 8 weeks and the eight-core components of DSMES. The curriculum was culturally adapted revised to incorporate culturally appropriate nature similarities, such as a prominent change to represent changes in glucose counts; to incorporate photos; to incorporate culturally relevant eating habits, such as fish and fruit; to communicate in detail the significance of medication adherence, with an emphasis on metformin’s organic, plant-based characteristics; and to emphasize engagement. Intention-to-treat analyses were conducted to determine the effect of modified DSMES on self-care, DFU severity, and QoL.
RESULTS: The DSMES program improved outcomes in three of the three outcome indicators when compared to the control group at T1: In this study, (1) the DFU degree increased by 3.3% points (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.018–0.194), (2) the diabetes foot self-care behavior score increased by a modest 8.8% points (95% CI: 0.021–0.203), and (3) the QoL increased by 32.7% points (95% CI: 00.075–0.689). The degree of DFU (difference-in-difference [DID] coef. 0.350, 95% CI 0.084–0.572), diabetes foot self-care behavior (DID coef. 0.085, 95% CI 0.065–0.405), and QoL (DID coef. 0.343, 95% CI 0.078–0.436) are all still significantly improved compared to the control at T2.
CONCLUSION: The primary outcome analyses indicate that the adapted DSMES was more effective than standard care at improving self-care and QoL and decreasing DFU degree in this sample of Indonesians with DFU, both immediately after and 3 months after the intervention. As nurse educators, it is our responsibility to ensure that we evaluate all of the support options accessible to the patients in our care.

Abstract
The aim is to provide meta-analytical evidence on eHealth interventions’ efficacy in supporting the psychosocial and physical well-being of adults with type 1 or type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM), and to investigate differences in interventions primarily targeted at providing glycemic control vs. psychosocial support. A PRISMA-guided systematic search was conducted. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) regarding eHealth interventions for adults (18–65 years) with DM were included. Data were pooled using Standard Mean Difference (SMD); sub-group analysis and meta-regressions were performed when appropriate. Outcomes were Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), diabetes distress, quality of life, anxiety, stress, and depression. Intervention acceptability was assessed performing the Odds Ratio (OR) of drop-out rates. Thirteen RCTs comprising 1315 participants were included (52.09% females; Mage = 46.18, SD = 9.98). Analyses showed intervention efficacy on HbA1c (SMD = −0.40; 95% CI = −0.70, −0.12; k = 13) and depressive symptoms (SMD = −0.18; 95% CI = −0.33, −0.02; k = 6) at RCTs endpoint and were well accepted (OR = 1.43; 95% CI = 0.72, 2.81; k = 10). However, efficacy on HbA1c was not maintained at follow-up (SMD = −0.13; 95% CI = −0.31, 0.05; k = 6). eHealth interventions providing medical support were acceptable and effective in fostering glycemic control and decreasing depressive symptoms in the short-term only. Digital solutions should be developed on multiple levels to fully support the psychophysical well-being of people with DM.

Abstract
Background Globally, the incidence of diabetes is increasing and strategies to reach a comprehensive approach of care are needed, including education in self-management. This is particularly true in low and middle-income countries where the number of people living with diabetes is higher than in the high-income ones. This article describes the development of a structured patient education program for Brazilians living with diabetes or prediabetes. Methods These steps were undertaken: 1) a 4-phase needs assessment (literature search of local diabetes guidelines, environmental scan, evaluation of information needs of patients identified by diabetes experts, and patient focus groups); and, 2) the translation and cultural adaptation of the patient guide (preparation, translation, back-translation, back-translation review, harmonization, and proofreading). Results Four of the seven guidelines identified include educational aspects of diabetes management. No structured education program was reported from the environmental scan. Regarding the information needs, 15 diabetes experts identified their patients’ needs, who referred that they have high information needs for topics related to their health condition. Finally, results from six patient focus groups were clustered into six themes (self-management, physical activity, eating habits, diabetes medication, psychosocial being, and sleep), all embedded into the new education program. Constructive theory, adult learning principles, and the Health Action Process Approach model were used in program development and will be used in delivery. The developed program consists of 18 educational sessions strategically mapped and sequenced to support the program learning outcomes and a patient guide with 17 chapters organized into five sections, matched with weekly lectures. Conclusions This program is a sequential and theoretical strategic intervention that can reach programs in Brazil to support diabetes and prediabetes patient education. Abstract
Background: The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) showed that lifestyle change or metformin is equally efficacious in preventing diabetes in women who have had gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Few studies have investigated the relationship between education and willingness to engage in either intervention and between education and preferred decision-making style. Methods: Within a large health system, we surveyed insured women 18-64 years old with a history of GDM, identified through the electronic health record. We estimated preference for decision-making style and interest in DPP lifestyle change and/or metformin by educational level, using multivariate logistic regression models controlling for age, race, and ethnicity. Results: Our sample (n = 264) was 36% Latino, 29% Asian, 28% non-Latino white, and 5% African American, with a mean age of 37 years. In terms of education, 31% had a postgraduate degree, 41% were college graduates, and 29% did not graduate from college. In multivariate analyses, willingness to engage in either intervention did not vary by education. Women who did not graduate from college were more likely to leave medical decisions to their provider (p = 0.004) compared to women with a college or postgraduate degree. However, regardless of education, over 80% of women preferred to make medical decisions themselves or jointly with their provider. Conclusions: Most women prefer to play an active role in their own medical decisions and have an interest in both evidence-based diabetes prevention strategies. This suggests that shared decision-making is appropriate for many women with a history of GDM and different levels of educational attainment.

Abstract
Metabolomic analysis was conducted by collecting urine samples from 128 participants in diagnose of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 105 volunteers in healthy condition, in order to identify biomarkers of experimental populations. The urinary concentrations of organophosphate flame retardant (OPFR) diesters were determined and linear regression model was used to find associations between OPFR diesters and the identified biomarkers. The urinary concentrations of OPFR diesters ranged from 0.17-779 μg/g creatinine. Diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) was detected with the highest frequency of 97% at a median level of 1.21 μg/g, and bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP) dominated the highest median level at 4.24 μg/g with a detection frequency of 94.4%. As compared with the control, the urinary median concentrations of bis(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (BBOEP), bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCPP) and DPHP were 2.76, 2.48, and 1.46 times higher in people with T2DM, respectively. Urinary metabolomic data revealed that steroid synthesis was the most significantly altered metabolic pathway between the case and control population. Two biomarkers of cortisol and cortisone that play an important role in steroid hormone regulation were quantified. The linear regression model indicated that per-quartile range increase in the concentrations of each OPFR diester was associated 18%-41% increase in the concentrations of cortisol and cortisone, which may impact energy metabolism linked with T2DM. To our knowledge, this study for the first time reported the altered levels of steroid hormones associated with urinary OPFR diesters.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Suboptimal self-care by individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health concern. The common-sense model (CSM) proposes that illness representations are associated with coping and health outcomes across various conditions. The present study examined the efficacy of a CSM-based intervention in improving illness representations, self-care, self-care self-efficacy, use of adaptive coping strategies, and glycated hemoglobin among individuals with type 2 DM (T2DM). METHODS A two-arm randomized controlled trial was used. A total of 455 T2DM patients were recruited from an outpatient DM clinic and randomized to an intervention group that consisted of five weekly group-based education sessions or a control group that received five weekly educational booklets. Evaluation was conducted at baseline and at 1- and 6-month follow-up. RESULTS The 2 × 3 linear mixed-model analysis using a modified intention to treat revealed a significant time by condition interaction effect on level of self-care (F(2,840) = 7.78, p < .001), self-care self-efficacy (F(1.89,794.57) = 14.40, p < .001), and use of adaptive coping strategies (F(1.94,812.93) = 4.75, p = .010) in which participants in the intervention group reported greater improvement in such aspects compared with those in the control group. A significant time effect was observed in some dimensions of illness representations. No significant effect was found in glycated hemoglobin. Participants reported positive feedback to the intervention and perceived improvement in various domains. CONCLUSIONS The CSM-based intervention was effective in improving self-care and coping among DM patients. The intervention also demonstrated high feasibility and acceptability. Findings provided important insights in improving health-related outcomes for patients with T2DM using the CSM framework.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to explore an understanding of the psychosocial-behavioral impact of diabetes self-management among veterans with diabetes. METHODS Twenty-six veterans participated in 1 of 9 focus groups that were conducted following a group diabetes self-management education class and prior to a mindfulness intervention as part of a feasibility pilot study. Discussions were guided by open-ended questions that addressed the overarching research question, "How do attitudes and experiences with diabetes inform psychosocial-educational approaches to diabetes self-management education and care for veterans?" Focus groups were audio-recorded and transcribed. The data was then independently coded and thematically analyzed by 2 coders. RESULTS Five main themes that reflect veterans' perceptions of their experiences with diabetes and diabetes self-management were identified: (1) distress and negative emotions, (2) social isolation, (3) perceived lack of control, (4) attitudes toward diabetes support, and (5) desire for information about stress, diabetes, health, and behavior. CONCLUSIONS Veterans experience emotional distress and have unmet psychosocial needs related to diabetes self-management. Insight gained from these veteran perspectives suggests a framework for integrating psycho-educational interventions like mindfulness into diabetes care that emphasize stress reduction, person-centered communication, and opportunities for peer support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with diabetic foot and ankle complications are at heightened risk for depression, anxiety, and stress. PURPOSE This study evaluated the effect of a stress management group education (SMGE) program in this population. METHODS The 21-question Depression Anxiety Stress Scales and the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale were administered prior to, upon completion of, and at approximately 6 weeks after the program. RESULTS Twenty-five patients from an urban diabetic foot and ankle center completed the study. CONCLUSION The SMGE program demonstrated decreased levels of anxiety, depression, and diabetes problem areas for our study population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is a serious chronic disease. Medical treatment and good psychosocial support are needed to cope with acute and long-term effects of diabetes. Self-management is a large part of diabetes management, with healthcare providers playing a supportive role. Young adults with type 1 diabetes are of special interest as they tend to have higher mean glycosylated haemoglobin values than other patients with type 1 diabetes, and they often miss visits in traditional diabetes care. A well-designed virtual solution may improve a range of measures (e.g. glycaemic control and perceived health) and reduce hospitalisations. METHOD This randomised controlled trial with a control group using a wait list design will recruit 100 young adults from a hospital in Sweden. All participants will receive usual diabetes care besides the virtual clinic. The primary objective is to evaluate the effect of a virtual diabetes clinic on glycaemic control, treatment satisfaction and quality of life in young adults (aged 18-25 years) with type-1 diabetes. The secondary objective is to determine the effects of virtual care on the patient experience. DISCUSSION Virtual tools are becoming increasingly common in healthcare; however, it remains unclear if these tools improve diabetes self-management. The results of this study will build understanding of how healthcare providers can use a virtual clinic to improve diabetes self-management. Abstract
AIMS/OBJECTIVES Glycemic control varies according to stress level and the efficacy of control measures, affecting the outcomes of diabetes. Although detailed coping styles have not been well studied in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, problem-focused coping strategies are believed to be related to better control of blood glucose. Associations between coping profiles/dimensions and blood glucose control were examined in individuals with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The participants included 503 Japanese patients (mean age 63.9 ± 12.6 years) with type 2 diabetes. The average glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were calculated from HbA1c levels measured more than four times within the 12 months before the assessment. Coping profiles were assessed using the Brief Scale for Coping Profile. Lifestyle factors were also included in the analyses. RESULTS Factors other than age were not associated with HbA1c levels in patients who used insulin. Conversely, habitual alcohol consumption, single status, the adaptive emotion-focused coping dimension, and changing mood and changing one's point of view profiles were associated with HbA1c levels. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that adaptive emotion-focused coping supports glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients who do not use insulin. Additional studies using a longitudinal design are required to further examine the relationships between psychological factors and glycemic control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to assess the effectiveness of an education intervention associated with an exercise program in improving knowledge and health behaviours among diabetes patients. METHODS Diabetes and prediabetes patients were exposed to an evidence- and theoretically-based comprehensive education intervention over 24 weeks. Patients completed surveys assessing knowledge, physical activity, food intake, self-efficacy, and health literacy. Functional capacity was measured by oxygen uptake. All outcomes were assessed pre- and post-CR. Satisfaction about the education provided was assessed at post-CR. Paired t-tests, Pearson correlation coefficients, and linear regression models were computed to investigate the effectiveness of this intervention. RESULTS 84 patients consented to participate, of which 47(56.0%) completed post-CR assessments. There was a significant improvement in patients' overall knowledge pre- to post-CR, as well as in physical activity, food intake, self-efficacy, and health literacy (p < 0.05). Peak VO2 has clinically significant improved. Results showed a low significant positive correlation was between post-CR knowledge and food intake(r = 0.297;p = 0.04). Linear regression analysis revealed that age(B=-0.051; p = 0.01) was influential in changing post-CR knowledge. CONCLUSION The benefits of an education intervention designed for diabetes and prediabetes patients associated with an exercise program have been supported. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS This work shows one effective education strategy taken in place that can be replicated in different settings.

Abstract
PURPOSE The AADE7 Self-Care Behaviors® (AADE7) is a robust framework for self-management of diabetes and other related conditions, such as prediabetes and cardiometabolic diseases. It is the position of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) that, at the cornerstone of diabetes self-management education and support, the AADE7 is the framework for achieving behavior change that leads to effective self-management through improved behavior and clinical outcome measures. The AADE7 model guides the health care team in effective person-centered collaboration and goal setting to achieve health-related outcomes and improved quality of life. Continued research and evidence are critical to expand this model and broaden its application to other chronic conditions. Given the advances in the science of diabetes management, as well as in diabetes self-management education and support, AADE has evaluated the AADE7 within the framework of these advances, including the digital and dynamic health care landscape. CONCLUSION This revised position statement blends the updates in research and AADE's vision and expansion beyond diabetes to refresh the AADE7 framework. This revision reflects the perspectives of all members of the health care team as they problem solve with individuals who are at risk for or who have diabetes and related conditions to achieve healthier outcomes.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus contributes to poor health outcomes including mortality, yet there is a gap in the literature when seeking to understand the influence of psychosocial factors on coping in this population. The paper presents a systematic review of quantitative studies that examined relationships among psychosocial determinants and coping in adults with type 2 diabetes. This review is the second layer of knowledge discovery for the concept, “Taking on a life-altering change is a rhythmical journey of experiencing ups and downs on the way to acceptance.” The life-altering change was determined to be a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, the journey is the ups and downs of coping with the diagnosis as people work toward acceptance of type 2 diabetes. The review includes a synthesis of findings from 22 quantitative studies of psychosocial factors and coping in adults with type 2 diabetes. Anxiety, depression, stress, and diabetes distress were identified as key influential psychosocial factors. Increased social support was inversely related to emotional distress and coping styles were related to social well-being, psychological health, and physical health outcomes. The positive coping style of problem-focused coping was linked to improved psychological and physical health. Emotional responses to diagnosis were related to depression and anxiety. Negative coping styles of resignation, protest, or isolation were higher in women and linked to poorer quality of life, while avoidance was linked to increased diabetes-related distress and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to design a culturally sensitive dyad-level diabetes intervention to improve glycemic control for older Latino adults with type 2 diabetes. Methods This study used a pretest-posttest noncontrol group design. The intervention was developed from formative research with Mexican-origin caregiving dyads. The curriculum was adapted from 2 randomized trials of community interventions specifically designed for Latino older adults with type 2 diabetes. The curriculum consisted of communication skill-building exercises and dyad decision making on lifestyle changes to improve the older adult’s blood glucose levels. Thirty-two community-dwelling dyads completed a 6-week program of one-on-one sessions with a trained program facilitator. Main outcomes were feasibility and acceptability of the Juntos program. The authors assessed feasibility by examining participant burden and retention and acceptability by participant exit interviews. Although underpowered for outcomes, A1C, health status, and dyadic communication were also assessed to evaluate whether trends suggested the effectiveness of the intervention. Results Most participants viewed Juntos as an acceptable program and wanted the program expanded in terms of length and scope. All outcomes showed improvement from baseline through 6 months postintervention. Conclusions Results show that Juntos is acceptable to Mexican-origin caregiving dyads and is a promising approach for effectively controlling type 2 diabetes among older Latino adults who have a family caregiver.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Behavioural agreements have been proposed as a clinical strategy for improving concordance with diabetes foot self-management practices, both for individuals 'At-risk' of, and with active, diabetes foot disease. This narrative review sought to explore the potential supportive role of person-centred diabetes foot behavioural agreements in promoting protective foot self-management behaviours among 'At-risk' individuals. CONCLUSIONS Healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in diabetes foot risk stratification and management dedicate considerable time, effort and resources to the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and lower extremity amputation (LEA) and are uniquely placed to deliver person-centred diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) interventions. Written, verbal and non-verbal agreements are consistent with a wider global move toward DSMES approaches, respectful of people's preferences, and supporting them to undertake protective self-care behaviours. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS It is theorised that clear communication of the roles of the person with diabetes, their family or carers and HCPs may improve concordance with self-management behaviours. Rather than a punitive measure or means of facilitating discharge of 'non-concordant' individuals, person-centred behavioural agreements should be framed positively, as a means of delineating, prescribing and supporting individual diabetes foot-care responsibilities. This is an area worthy of further research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Success in diabetes research and self-management is often defined as a significant decrease in glycated hemoglobin (A1C). The aim of this article is to explore different types of successes experienced by adults with type-2 diabetes participating in a health technology and nurse coaching clinical trial. METHODS A qualitative analysis was conducted using surveys and documentation from motivational interview-based coaching sessions between study nurses and intervention participants. RESULTS Of the 132 cases reviewed, types of success predominantly fell into five categories: 1) change in health behaviors; 2) change in mindset or awareness; 3) change in engagement with healthcare resources; 4) change in physical or emotional health; and 5) change in health indicators. CONCLUSION Experiences of success in diabetes are more varied than traditional A1C-based outcome models. Our findings suggest coaching and technology can assist patients to achieve a range of successes in diabetes management through goal setting, health tracking, resolving barriers, and aligning goals with factors that impact change. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS While A1C reduction is a critical factor in decreasing risk of diabetes-related complications, when healthcare professionals focus on A1C as the main indicator of diabetes management success, important changes in individuals' health and well-being may be overlooked or undervalued.

Abstract
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) "Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes" includes ADA's current clinical practice recommendations and is intended to provide the components of diabetes care, general treatment goals and guidelines, and tools to evaluate quality of care. Members of the ADA Professional Practice Committee, a multidisciplinary expert committee, are responsible for updating the Standards of Care annually, or more frequently as warranted.
