Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer imposes a substantial financial burden on patients because of the high out-of-pocket expenses and the significant hardships. Financial toxicity describes the impact of cancer care costs at the patient level. Although the financial impact of cancer has been recognized, understanding the extent and determinants of financial toxicity in specific contexts is crucial. This study investigated the level of financial toxicity and its associated factors among patients with cancer at an oncology hospital in central Vietnam. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 334 patients with cancer. Direct interviews and medical record reviews were used for data collection. Financial toxicity was assessed using the 11-item Comprehensive Score for financial Toxicity (COST). A logistic regression model was used to determine factors associated with financial toxicity. RESULTS A notable 87.7% of patients experienced financial toxicity due to cancer cost, with 37.7% experiencing mild financial toxicity and 49.7% suffering from moderate financial toxicity, 0.3% reporting severe financial toxicity. Individuals with low household income exhibited a higher proportion of financial toxicity compared to that of those with higher income (odds ratio (OR) = 5.78, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.29-25.68). Compared with that of participants in the early stages, a higher burden was found in patients with advanced-stage cancer (OR = 3.88, 95% CI: 1.36-11.11). CONCLUSION Our study indicates that patients with cancer in Vietnam facefinancial toxicity. It is thus necessary for interventions to mitigate the financial burden on patients with cancer, focusing on vulnerable individuals and patients in the advanced stages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate a co-designed intervention using digital resources "Vietnam Cancer Caring Coping" (V-CCC) on the health literacy, depression, and quality of life of caregivers supporting a cancer patient in oncology hospitals in Vietnam. METHODS A pre-post quantitative evaluation with adult cancer caregivers across regional Oncology hospitals in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho, and Hue). Participants completed baseline and follow-up measures of health literacy (HLS-SF12) depression (PHQ-9) and Health-related Quality of Life (5Q-5D-5L). Participants accessed and reviewed V-CCC for a 2-week period. RESULTS Two hundred and thirty-four caregivers completed pre and post-tests. Most participants were female (n = 143, 61%), married (n = 165, 70%), aged 18-44 (n = 155, 66%), lived rurally (n = 157, 67%). All health literacy scores of participants in post-intervention were significantly higher than that in pre-intervention across all domain's healthcare, disease prevention, and health promotion as well as the total score (p < 0.001). A significant reduction in the proportion of caregivers reporting PHQ-9 moderately severe/severe depression post-intervention was demonstrated (10.2 vs. 6.1%, respectively (p ≤ 0.001). No significant differences were observed pre and post-intervention across four 5Q-5D-5L health dimensions: mobility, self-care, usual activities, and pain/discomfort. Regarding anxiety/depression as measured by 5Q-5D-5L the proportion of participants who reported having moderate, severe, and extreme problems in pre- and post-intervention was statistically significant (32 vs. 24%), respectively (p = 0.0028). CONCLUSION Co-designed digital resources can reduce health literacy inequities and improve psychological outcomes for cancer caregivers.

Abstract
Alterations in signaling pathways and modulation of cell metabolism are associated with the pathogenesis of cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) proteins and NF-κB family play major roles in various cellular processes. The current study aims to determine the expression profile of SUMO and NF-κB genes in HCC tumors and investigate their association with the clinical outcome of HCC. The expression of 5 genes - SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3, NF-κB p65, and NF-κB p50 - was quantified in tumor and adjacent non-tumor tissues of 58 HBV-related HCC patients by real-time quantitative PCR and was analyzed for the possible association with clinical parameters of HCC. The expression of SUMO2 was significantly higher in HCC tumor tissues compared to the adjacent non-tumor tissues (P = .01), while no significant difference in SUMO1, SUMO3, NF-κB p65, and NF-κB p50 expression was observed between HCC tumor and non-tumor tissues (P > .05). In HCC tissues, a strong correlation was observed between the expression of SUMO2 and NF-κB p50, between SUMO3 and NF-κB p50, between SUMO3 and NF-κB p65 (Spearman rho = 0.83; 0.82; 0.772 respectively; P < .001). The expression of SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3, NF-κB p65, and NF-κB p50 was decreased in grade 3 compared to grades 1 and 2 in HCC tumors according to the World Health Organization grades system. Our results highlighted that the SUMO2 gene is upregulated in tumor tissues of patients with HCC, and is related to the development of HCC, thus it may be associated with the pathogenesis of HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vietnam is experiencing a growing burden of cancer, including among people living with HIV. Stigma acts as a sociocultural barrier to the prevention and treatment of both conditions. This study investigates how cultural notions of "respected personhood" (or "what matters most") influence manifestations of HIV-related stigma and cancer stigma in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS Thirty in-depth interviews were conducted with people living with HIV in Hanoi, Vietnam. Transcripts were thematically coded via a directed content analysis using the What Matters Most conceptual framework. Coding was done individually and discussed in pairs, and any discrepancies were reconciled in full-team meetings. RESULTS Analyses elucidated that having chữ tín-a value reflecting social involvement, conscientiousness, and trustworthiness-and being successful (eg, in career, academics, or one's personal life) are characteristics of respected people in this local cultural context. Living with HIV and having cancer were seen as stigmatized and interfering with these values and capabilities. Intersectional stigma toward having both conditions was seen to interplay with these values in some ways that had distinctions compared with stigma toward either condition alone. Participants also articulated how cultural values like chữ tín are broadly protective against stigmatization and how getting treatment and maintaining employment can help individuals resist stigmatization's most acute impacts. CONCLUSIONS HIV-related and cancer stigma each interfere with important cultural values and capabilities in Vietnam. Understanding these cultural manifestations of these stigmas separately and intersectionally can allow for greater ability to measure and respond to these stigmas through culturally tailored intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination in Vietnamese adults remains low and unequally distributed. We conducted a study on HBV-naïve adults living in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, to determine barriers associated with HBV vaccination uptake after removing the financial barrier by providing free coupons for HBV vaccination. METHODS After being screened for HBsAg, anti-HBs, and anti-HBc, 284 HBV-naïve study participants aged 18 and over (i.e., negative for HBsAg, anti-HBs, and anti-HBc total) were provided free 3-dose HBV vaccine coupons. Next, study participants' receipt of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd doses of HBV vaccine was documented at a pre-specified study healthcare facility, where HBV vaccines were distributed at no cost to the participants. Upon study entry, participants answered questionnaires on sociodemographics, knowledge of HBV and HBV vaccination, and related social and behavioral factors. The proportions of three doses of HBV vaccine uptake and their confidence intervals were analyzed. Associations of HBV vaccine initiation with exposures at study entry were evaluated using modified Poisson regression. RESULTS 98.9% (281 of 284) of study participants had complete data and were included in the analysis. The proportion of participants obtaining the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd doses of HBV vaccine was 11.7% (95% Confidence Interval [95% CI] 8.0-15.5%), 10.7% (95%CI 7.1-14.3%), and 8.9% (95%CI 5.6-12.2%), respectively. On the other hand, participants were more likely to initiate the 1st dose if they had adequate knowledge of transmission (adjusted relative risk [aRR] = 2.58, 95% CI 1.12-5.92), adequate knowledge of severity (aRR = 6.75, 95%CI 3.38-13.48), and annual health-checking seeking behavior (aRR = 2.04, 95%CI 1.07-3.87). CONCLUSION We documented a low HBV vaccination uptake despite incentivization. However, increased vaccine initiation was associated with better HBV knowledge and annual health check-up adherence. When considering expanding HBV vaccination to the general adult population, we should appreciate that HBV knowledge is an independent predictor of vaccine uptake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer burden in Asia is increasing, and Vietnam is no exception. Assessing the affordability of achieving a quality-adjusted life year (QALY) in gastrointestinal cancer patients Vietnam, as well as identifying predictors of willingness to pay (WTP) per QALY, is crucial to decision-making around medical intervention prioritization and performing medical technology assessments for these cancers. OBJECTIVES Our study aimed to estimate WTP/QALY gained and associated factors among patients diagnosed with GI cancer at a tertiary hospital in Hue, Vietnam. METHODS A cross-sectional descriptive study, using contingent valuation methodology was conducted among 231 patients at tertiary hospital in 2022. A double limited dichotomous choice and the EQ-5D-5L were utilised to estimate WTP and QALY, respectively. Quantile regression was applied to determine predictors of WTP/QALY. RESULTS The mean and median maximum WTP/QALY gained among GI patients was $15,165.6 (42,239.6) and $4,365.6 (IQR: 1,586.5-14,552.0), respectively, which was equal to 3.68 times the 2022 gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Vietnam. Additionally, cancer severity was found to have a significant impact on WTP per QALY gained, with a higher amount identified among patients with earlier stages of GI cancer. Furthermore, living in an urban dwelling and patients' treatment modalities were significantly associated with WTP/QALY. CONCLUSION Evidence from our study can be used to inform how decision-makers in Vietnam to determine the cost-effectiveness of GI cancer interventions.

Abstract
The need for psychosocial care among patients with serious illnesses and available social work services continues to be great, especially in low- and middle-income countries. To evaluate the specific needs of Vietnamese cancer patients' quality of life (QOL), prevalence and severity of symptoms including depression and anxiety, and caregiver burden were assessed. Data on QOL, mood, caregiver burden, and other parameters were collected through face-to-face and phone- interviews. The QOL assessed by European Quality of Life scale version 5D (EQ5D) was poor but consistent with other studies of cancer patients. Assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and depression Scale (HADS), borderline or severe anxiety and depression were prevalent. Caregiver burden was high for one third of study participants. These results confirm the need among cancer patients for psycho-social support services that currently are rarely available in Vietnam. In light of this need, a comprehensive palliative care (CPC) service, including social work, was created to improve the quality of life (QOL) of Vietnamese cancer patients.

Abstract
The burden of digestive cancers is increasing worldwide. The Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2020 and the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 are two primary cancer databases, which have a significant impact on policy formulation and resource allocation. We aim to compare the incidence and mortality of digestive cancers between them. Digestive cancer (esophageal, stomach, colorectal, liver, gallbladder and pancreatic cancer) incidence was obtained from the Cancer Today and GBD 2019 result tool. The top five countries with the most or minor difference between GLOBOCAN 2020 and GBD 2019 in age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) of digestive cancers were identified. A systematic search on the incidence of specific digestive cancer in selected countries from PubMed and Embase was conducted, and 20 of 281 publications were included. The most significant differences in digestive cancers incidence were commonly found in Asian countries (70%), particularly Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar, located in Southeast Asia. The ASIRs for most digestive cancers, except liver cancer, in GLOBOCAN 2020 were higher than those in GBD 2019. Gallbladder cancer had the highest average ratio, followed by liver cancer. The most commonly used standard population was Segi's standard population, followed by the World Health Organization standard population. The data sources nor the processing methods of GLOBOCAN 2020 and GBD 2019 were not similar. Low- and middle-income countries without population-based cancer registries were more likely to have selection bias in data collection and amplify regional variations of etiological factors. Better judgments on the quality of cancer data can be made.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The burden of cancer can be altered by screening. The field of cancer screening is constantly evolving; from the initiation of program for new cancer types as well as exploring innovative screening strategies (e.g. new screening tests). The aim of this study was to perform a landscape analysis of existing cancer screening programs in South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. METHODS We conducted an overview of cancer screening in the region with the goal of summarizing current designs of cancer screening programs. First, a selective narrative literature review was used as an exploration to identify countries with organized screening programs. Second, representatives of each country with an organized program were approached and asked to provide relevant information on the organizations of their national or regional cancer screening program. RESULTS There was wide variation in the screening strategies offered in the considered region with only eight programs identified as having an organized design. The majority of these programs did not meet all the essential criteria for being organized screening. The greatest variation was observed in the starting and stopping ages. CONCLUSIONS Essential criteria of organized screening are missed. Improving organization is crucial to ensure that the beneficial effects of screening are achieved in the long-term. It is strongly recommended to consider a regional cancer screening network.

Abstract
Despite their promise, circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA)-based assays for multi-cancer early detection face challenges in test performance, due mostly to the limited abundance of ctDNA and its inherent variability. To address these challenges, published assays to date demanded a very high-depth sequencing, resulting in an elevated price of test. Herein, we developed a multimodal assay called SPOT-MAS (screening for the presence of tumor by methylation and size) to simultaneously profile methylomics, fragmentomics, copy number, and end motifs in a single workflow using targeted and shallow genome-wide sequencing (~0.55×) of cell-free DNA. We applied SPOT-MAS to 738 non-metastatic patients with breast, colorectal, gastric, lung, and liver cancer, and 1550 healthy controls. We then employed machine learning to extract multiple cancer and tissue-specific signatures for detecting and locating cancer. SPOT-MAS successfully detected the five cancer types with a sensitivity of 72.4% at 97.0% specificity. The sensitivities for detecting early-stage cancers were 73.9% and 62.3% for stages I and II, respectively, increasing to 88.3% for non-metastatic stage IIIA. For tumor-of-origin, our assay achieved an accuracy of 0.7. Our study demonstrates comparable performance to other ctDNA-based assays while requiring significantly lower sequencing depth, making it economically feasible for population-wide screening.

Abstract
In Vietnam, colorectal cancer is one of the top diagnosed cancers, with 5-10% originating from inherited mutations. This study aims to define the mutation spectrum associated with hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes (HCCS) in Vietnam, evaluate the influence of genetic testing on carriers' awareness, and also investigate the barriers in familial testing. Genetic test reports were collected to identify HCCS cases, then cases underwent a survey investigating self-risk and familial-risk awareness, proactive cancer screening, and familial testing barriers. Participant characteristics, mutation prevalence, and results from the survey were descriptively analyzed and reported. Of all genetic test results, 3% (49/1632) were identified with mutations related to HCCS. Over 77% of them belonged to Lynch syndrome. PMS2 appeared to be the gene with the highest mutation frequency, while MLH1 was the lowest. 44% of cases further undertook cancer screening tests, and 48% of cases' families had uptake genetic testing. The biggest barrier of familial members for not taking genetic test was psychological reasons (fear, not being interested, or not feeling necessary). This study provided new evidence for HCCS mutation spectrum in Vietnamese population and the success in promoting cascade test in high-risk family members through financial and technical support. Also, study has suggested the needs of an innovative genetic testing process focusing on the quality of pre-and post-test consultancy, an increase in follow-ups, and the change in policy for permission of contacting relatives directly to improve the rate of cascade testing and proactive cancer screening.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine Kirsten Ras sarcoma virus (KRAS) mutations and the associations of KRAS mutations with clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes in Vietnamese non-polyp colon cancer (NPCC) patients. The data in the present study covered 194 patients with non-polyp colon cancers at stages II or III, according to the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system, in northern Vietnam from January 2016 to August 2020. All patients underwent radical surgery and adjuvant therapy with FOLFOX4 or XELOX. Subsequently, the recruited patients were followed-up with scheduled hospital exams for diagnosing recurrence. Genomic DNA samples were prepared from dissected tumors and specific sequences of the KRAS gene were amplified by polymerase chain reactions (PCR). The mutations at codons 12, 13, 59, 60, 61, 117 and 146 of the gene were determined. Possible associations of the KRAS mutations with clinicopathological properties and the survival of patients were analysed. The KRAS mutation rate was 47.9% in Vietnamese patients with NPCC, of those, mutations in exon 2 accounted for 91.4% of all detected mutations. The mutated-KRAS patients exhibited a significantly higher rate of anemia. Moreover, the KRAS mutation rate was higher in females (57.1%) than in males (39.8%). The KRAS mutation rate was also higher in patients with right colon cancers. Furthermore, KRAS mutations were an independent prognosis for poor disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in stage II patients. Among left-sided colon patients, mutated KRAS was a significant predictive factor for poor DFS but not for OS. The present study revealed a very high mutation rate of KRAS in Vietnamese patients with NPCC. The data of the present study indicated that the mutation status was associated with female patients and right-sided tumors. The KRAS mutations were a negative factor for the survival of patients with stage II NPCC and patients with left-sided colon cancer.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer in Vietnam but based on the literature, only ~25% of Vietnamese women reported ever being screened for cervical cancer. To inform strategies to reduce the cervical cancer burden in Southern Vietnam where disease incidence is higher than the national average, this study examined behaviors, awareness, barriers, and beliefs about cervical cancer screening among rural and urban women in this geographical region. In October-November 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional study among 196 rural and 202 urban women in Southern Vietnam; participants completed a cervical cancer screening questionnaire. Descriptive analyses and rural-urban differences in screening behavior, awareness, barriers, and beliefs are presented. About half of the rural and urban participants reported ever being screened for cervical cancer. Most participants showed high perceived severity of cervical cancer and benefits of screening. Further, they reported that they would screen if it was recommended by doctors and/or friends/family. However, most women showed low awareness and perceived susceptibility to cervical cancer. Logistical and psychosocial barriers to physician-based screening methods were reported. Based on our results, the World Health Organization 2030 goals for cervical cancer screening are not currently met in Southern Vietnam. Increasing health literacy and engaging doctors and family members/social networks emerged as important avenues to improve screening. HPV (Human papillomavirus) self-sampling is also a potential approach to increase uptake of cervical cancer screening given the identified psychosocial and logistical barriers.

Abstract
Identifying modifiable risk factors that contribute to cancer is essential in setting up preventive strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the number and proportion of cancer cases and deaths attributable to five behavior-related risk factors-tobacco smoking, second-hand smoking, alcohol consumption, high body mass index and insufficient physical activity in Vietnam in 2020. Population attributable fractions were calculated for relationships of risk factors and cancer types based on sufficient evidence according to IARC or strong evidence according to WCRF/AICR. Relative risks were retrieved from meta-analyses where possible. Prevalence of risk factors was obtained from the most current available nationally representative population surveys in Vietnam. Cancer cases and deaths were obtained from GLOBOCAN 2020. An estimated 40.5% of all cancer cases in men (39 924 cases) and 7.8% in women (6542 cases) were attributable to these risk factors. The proportions of cancer deaths attributable to these risk factors were 44.0% in men (32 807 cases) and 8.9% in women (4235 cases). Tobacco smoking was the leading cause of cancer cases and deaths in men, followed by alcohol consumption and high BMI. In women, high BMI accounted for the highest proportion of cancer cases and second-hand smoking accounted for the highest proportion of cancer deaths. Lung and upper aerodigestive tract cancer cases and deaths could have been reduced at least by half if these risk factors had been eliminated. To reduce cancer incidence and mortality, preventive actions focusing on tobacco control are likely to have the most significant impact, especially in men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with cancer who are not well informed often experience dissatisfaction with care, difficulty coping with their disease, and feelings of helplessness. PURPOSE This study was designed to investigate the information needs of women with breast cancer undergoing treatment in Vietnam and the determinants of these needs. METHODS One hundred thirty women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer in the National Cancer Hospital in Vietnam enrolled as volunteers in this cross-sectional descriptive correlational study. Self-perceived information needs, body functions, and disease symptoms were surveyed using the Toronto Informational Needs Questionnaire and the 23-item Breast Cancer Module of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire, which consists of two (functional and symptom) subscales. Descriptive statistical analyses included t test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression. RESULTS The results revealed participants had high information needs and a negative future perspective. The highest information needs related to potential for recurrence, interpretation of blood test results, treatment side effects, and diet. Future perspective, income level, and educational level were identified as determinants of information needs, explaining 28.2% of the variance in the need for breast cancer information. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This study was the first to use a validated questionnaire to assess information needs in women with breast cancer in Vietnam. Healthcare professionals may refer to the findings of this study when designing and delivering health education programs designed to meet the self-perceived information needs of women with breast cancer in Vietnam.

Abstract
The SPOT-MAS assay "Screening for the Presence Of Tumor by Methylation And Size" detects the five most common cancers in Vietnam by evaluating circulating tumor DNA in the blood. Here, we validated its performance in a prospective multi-center clinical trial, K-DETEK. Our analysis of 2795 participants from 14 sites across Vietnam demonstrates its ability to detect cancers in asymptomatic individuals with a positive predictive value of 60%, with 83.3% accuracy in detecting tumor location. We present a case report to support further using SPOT-MAS as a complementary method to achieve early cancer detection and provide the opportunity for early treatment.

The Health-Seeking Behavior of the Elderly with Non-Communicable Diseases in Coastal Areas of Vietnam. Healthcare (Basel) 2023; 11:healthcare11040465. Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the utilization of health care facilities and the health-seeking behavior of elderly people with non-communicable diseases and find the factors that affect them. A cross-sectional study was conducted in seven coastal areas of the Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam, using a sample of 370 elderly people aged over 60 years. Chi-square and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the factors associated with the utilization of health care services. The participants' average age was 69.70 (SD), and 18% of them reported having ≥ two non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The results of the study showed that 69.8% of the total participants exhibited health-seeking behaviors. The findings also revealed that elderly people living alone, and those with an average or above-average income, had higher utilization of health care services. Participants with multiple NCDs exhibited more health-seeking behaviors than those with only one (OR: 9.24, 95% CI: 2.66-32.15, p = <0.001). The presence of health insurance and the need for health care counseling were also relevant ([OR: 4.16, 95% CI: 1.30-13.31, p = 0.016], [OR: 3.91, 95% CI: 2.04-7.49, p < 0.001], respectively). Health-seeking behavior is one of the most important positive implications for the aged population, as it encompasses one's physical, mental, and psychological wellbeing. Future studies can aim at gaining an in-depth understanding of the same results, helping improve the health-seeking behavior of elderly people, and enhancing their quality of life.

Abstract
Cancer led to nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). Consequently, both biomedical therapeutics and psychological interventions have been implemented to decrease the burden of this non-communicable disease. However, the research conducted so far has only described some aspects of these interventions, which may increase the health-related quality of life of cancer patients. Therefore, a systematic review is necessary to depict an overall picture of the cancer interventions globally. Then, the impact of these interventions on the preference-based health-related quality of life of cancer patients may be synthesized. The protocol is developed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The Web of Science database is used to retrieve the literature using four keyword terms: quality of life (QoL), cancer, interventions, and health utility. Then, we draw the global mapping diagram and conduct the meta-analysis for this research. Additionally, longitudinal measurements are used to estimate the changes in the health utility of patients during the interventions. Thus, this systematic review can provide insight into the impact of interventions on increasing the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of cancer patients.

BACKGROUND GLOBOCAN 2020 and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 are the two most established global online cancer databases. It is important to examine the differences between the two platforms, to attempt to explain these differences, and to appraise the quality of the data. There are stark differences for lip and oral cancers (LOC) and we attempt to explain these by detailed analysis of ten countries at the extremes of differences. METHODS Age-standardised incidence rates (ASIR) of LOC were obtained from GLOBOCAN 2020 and GBD 2019. Five countries with the greatest and smallest fold differences were selected. A systematic search of PubMed and Embase electronic databases was then performed to identify publications reporting the incidence of LOC in the selected countries between 2015 and 2022. Specifically, data sources of the articles were examined and evaluated. FINDINGS For LOC, greatest differences were found in Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, and Indonesia (group A). In contrast, the United States of America (USA), Brazil, France, Germany, and India (group B) had the least differences between the two databases. INTERPRETATION It is not surprising that when GLOBOCAN and GBD could not obtain high-quality or accessible LOC data from national or local cancer registries, as in group A, discrepancies would be seen between the two online databases. In contrast, where only minor differences were seen between GLOBOCAN and GBD, as in group B, presumptively due to those countries having well-established cancer registries and healthcare administrative systems, the literature is more consistent. Moreover, many studies have grouped lip and oral cavity with pharynx and categorised outputs as "oral and oropharyngeal cancer" or "oral cavity and pharynx cancer". Those categorisations lacked subsite accuracy and failed to realise that oral cancer and oropharyngeal cancer have completely different etiological factors, pathogeneses, prognosis, and treatment outcomes. Prevalence and risk factors for human papillomavirus infection among female sex workers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam: a cross-sectional study. Abstract
Objective Female sex workers (FSWs) are at high risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and cervical cancer due to their high number of sexual partners. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of HPV and identify risk factors for high-risk HPV infection among FSWs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Viet Nam. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Hanoi and HCMC between December 2017 and May 2018. We surveyed and screened 699 FSWs aged 318 years for HPV infection and abnormal cytology. A multivariable modified Cox regression model was used to determine risk factors for high-risk HPV infection. Results The overall prevalence of any HPV, high-risk HPV and HPV-16/18 infection in the 699 FSWs was 26.3%, 17.6% and 4.0%, respectively, and were similar in both cities. Multiple infections were identified in 127 participants (69.0%). HPV-52 was the most prevalent (7%), followed by HPV-58 (6%). Abnormal cytology was detected in 91 participants (13.0%). FSWs who are divorced (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]: 1.96, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-3.81), widowed (aPR: 3.26, 95% CI: 1.49-7.12) or living alone (aPR: 1.85, 95% CI: 1.01-3.39) were associated with a higher prevalence of high-risk HPV infection. Discussion Almost one in five FSWs in Viet Nam are infected with high-risk HPV. This highlights the importance of prevention strategies such as HPV vaccination and screening in this high-risk group.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the outcome and safety of the paclitaxel, carboplatin, and capecitabine (TCX) regimen in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Methods Advanced gastric cancer patients received the TCX regimen for up to six cycles, which were 3 weeks apart. Paclitaxel (175 mg/m2) was given over a 3-hour infusion, followed by carboplatin in a 1-hour infusion on day 1. Capecitabine (850 mg/m2) was given orally twice daily from day 1 to day 14. Primary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results Among 83 patients at stage IVa and IVb, the median PFS was 9.3 months; 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year PFS were 74.6%, 32.5%, and 14.4%, respectively. The median OS was 17.0 months; 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year OS were 97.5%, 68.7%, and 21.7%, respectively. In the multivariable Cox regression model, higher CEA was associated with poor OS. Common adverse events included hand-food syndrome (77.9%), peripheral neuropathy (63.2%), fatigue (68.7%), and nausea (54.2%). Conclusion The TCX regimen provided good survival and a better safety profile. More clinical trials are needed to confirm its treatment efficacy and safety, especially in comparison with other triplet regimens.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Excess salt consumption is causally linked with stomach cancer, and salt intake among adults in Vietnam is about twice the recommended levels. The aim of this study was to quantify the future burden of stomach cancer that could be avoided from population-wide salt reduction in Vietnam. DESIGN A dynamic simulation model was developed to quantify the impacts of achieving the 2018 National Vietnam Health Program (8 g/d by 2025 and 7 g/d by 2030) and the WHO (5 g/d) salt reduction policy targets. Data on salt consumption were obtained from the Vietnam 2015 WHO STEPS survey. Health outcomes were estimated over 6-year (2019-2025), 11-year (2019-2030) and lifetime horizons. We conducted one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. SETTING Vietnam. PARTICIPANTS All adults aged ≥ 25 years (61 million people, 48·4 % men) alive in 2019. RESULTS Achieving the 2025 and 2030 national salt targets could result in 3400 and 7200 fewer incident cases of stomach cancer, respectively, and avert 1900 and 4800 stomach cancer deaths, respectively. Achieving the WHO target by 2030 could prevent 8400 incident cases and 5900 deaths from stomach cancer. Over the lifespan, this translated to 344 660 (8 g/d), 411 060 (7 g/d) and 493 633 (5 g/d) health-adjusted life years gained, respectively. CONCLUSIONS A sizeable burden of stomach cancer could be avoided, with gains in healthy life years if national and WHO salt targets were attained. Our findings provide impetus for policy makers in Vietnam and Asia to intensify salt reduction strategies to combat stomach cancer and mitigate pressure on the health systems.

Abstract
Debates about subject English in Australia are often conducted through the senior years curriculum. In light of the anticipated interest in the new Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) English study design released in 2022 to be implemented in 2023, this paper outlines the current state of research on the VCE English subject by mapping areas of interest, types of evidence and gaps in research. The authors utilise a hybrid approach of narrative scoping review to identify methodological and thematic trends in the scholarly literature, and intersecting professional and media discourse on VCE English from 1990 to 2021. Finding that the student experience and the enacted curriculum have been largely elided, the paper identifies fresh lines of inquiry into VCE English and advocates for new discussions around scholarly interest and approaches to senior secondary English in Australia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Australia provides an ideal population-base for cancer migration studies because of its multicultural society and high-quality cancer registrations. Among migrant groups there is considerable variability in the incidence of infection-related cancers; thus, the patterns of three such cancers were examined among migrant groups relative to Australian-born residents. METHODS Using national incidence data for cancers of the stomach, liver, and cervix diagnosed during 2005 to 2014, incidence rates were compared for selected migrant groups with the Australian-born population using incidence rate ratios (IRR), from a negative binomial regression model. RESULTS Wide variations in incidence between countries/regions of birth were observed for all three cancers (P < 0.0001). The patterns were similar for cancers of the stomach and liver, in that migrants from countries/regions with higher incidence rates maintained an increased risk in Australia, with the highest being among South American migrants (IRR = 2.35) for stomach cancer and among Vietnamese migrants (5.44) for liver cancer. In contrast, incidence rates of cervical cancer were lower for many migrant groups, with women from Southern Asia (0.39) and North Africa (0.42) having the lowest rates. The rate of cervical cancer was higher in migrants from New Zealand, Philippines, and Polynesia. CONCLUSIONS Several Australian migrant groups were found to experience a disproportionate burden of infection-related cancers; further studies of associated risk factors may inform the design of effective interventions to mediate these disparities. IMPACT By identifying these migrant groups, it is hoped that these results will motivate and inform prevention or early detection activities for these migrant groups. Abstract
Objective KINDLE-Vietnam was a part of a real-world KINDLE study with an aim to characterise treatment patterns and clinical outcomes of patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods Retrospective data from patients diagnosed with stage III NSCLC (American Joint Committee on Cancer, 7th edition) between January 2013 and December 2017 with at least 9 months of follow-up were collected from 2 centres in Vietnam. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise demographics, disease characteristics and treatment modalities. Kaplan-Meier methodology evaluated survival estimates; 2-sided 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed. Inferential statistics were used to correlate clinical and treatment variables with median progression-free survival (mPFS) and median overall survival (mOS). Results A total of 150 patients (median age: 60 years [range 26-82]) were enrolled; 75.3% were male, 62.0% had smoking history, 56.4% had stage IIIB disease and 62.5% had adenocarcinoma. The majority of the cases (97.3%) were not discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting. Overall, chemotherapy alone (43.3%), radiotherapy alone (17.0%), sequential chemoradiation (13.5%) and concurrent chemoradiation (12.8%) were preferred as initial therapy. Surgery-based treatment was administered in limited patients (stage IIIA, 10%; stage IIIB, 1.3%). Palliative therapy was the most commonly administered treatment upon relapse in the second-and third-line setting. The mPFS and mOS for the Vietnam cohort were 8.7 months (95% CI, 7.59-9.72) and 25.7 months (95% CI, 19.98-42.61), respectively. The mPFS and mOS for stage IIIA were 11.9 months (95% CI, 8.64-14.95) and 28.2 months (95% CI, 24.15-not-calculable) and for stage IIIB were 7.8 months (95% CI, 6.64-8.71) and 20.0 months (95% CI, 13.01-42.61). Conclusions KINDLE-Vietnam offers insights into the clinical findings of stage III NSCLC. There is a high unmet need for identifying patients in the early stages of NSCLC. Strategies for improving clinical outcomes in this patient population include physician education, multidisciplinary management and catering to increased access to novel agents like immunotherapy and targeted therapy.

Abstract
Multiple barriers impede the transformation of evidence-based research into implementation of cervical cancer screening in ASEAN countries. This review is the first of its kind to show the disease burden of cervical cancer, progress till date to implement screening and corresponding challenges, and propose tailored solutions to promote cervical cancer prevention in ASEAN. In 2020, approximately 69 000 cervical cancer cases and 38 000 deaths happened in ASEAN, and more than 44% and 63% increases on new cases and deaths are expected in 2040. Only four countries have initiated population-based cervical cancer screening programs, but the participation rate is less than 50% in some countries and even lower than 10% in Myanmar and Indonesia. Inequity and unavailability in service delivery, lack of knowledge and awareness, limited follow-up and treatment capacity, and funding sustainability affect successful scale-up of cervical cancer screening most in ASEAN. Implementing HPV detection-based primary screening, appropriate management of screen-positives, enhancing health education, integrating health services can accelerate reduction of cervical cancer burden in ASEAN. Achieving high screening coverage and high treatment compliance will help ASEAN countries remain aligned to cervical cancer elimination strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND DNA methylation on cytosine in the CpG dinucleotides is one of the most common epigenetic perturbations taking place during cancer initiation, progression, occurrence and resistance therapy. DNA methylation seems to be sufficiently stable epigenetic modification to be utilized as a cancer biomarker in in vitro diagnostic (IVD) settings. Nowadays, the SHOX2 methylation (mSHOX2) is one of the most valuable DNA methylation biomarkers of lung cancer that is the leading cause of cancer death. It is being continuously validated across ethnicities, lifestyles and lifespan. This study focused on characteristics of mSHOX2 in Vietnamese patients with lung cancer since a lack of investigation and evidence of its utility in this country. METHODS The probe and primer sets were designed according to the MethyLight method for quantitative assessment of the mSHOX2 in 214 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) lung tissues and 57 plasma samples. RESULTS mSHOX2 in FFPE tissues allowed discriminating benign and malignant lung diseases with 60% (95% CI 50.7-68.8%) sensitivity and 90.4% (95% CI 82.6-95.5%) specificity. Importantly, based on mSHOX2 in plasma, lung cancer could be detected with 83.3% (95% CI 65.3-94.4%) sensitivity and 92.6% (95% CI 75.7-99.1%) specificity, respectively. There were insignificant associations between mSHOX2 with age, cancer stage, EGFR mutation and serum CEA, CYFRA21-1 concentrations except for that gender. CONCLUSION Our study indicated that mSHOX2 was satisfactory for distinguishing malignant from benign lung tissue and noninvasively detecting lung cancer.

Abstract
Having a good understanding of cancer patients' health literacy in the early stage of diagnosis can help to implement strategies to improve the management process and overall health outcomes. The study aims to describe health literacy and its association with socio-demographic characteristics among newly admitted cancer patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 262 newly admitted patients of a cancer hospital in Vietnam using the Vietnamese version of the HLS-SF12 questionnaire. Descriptive analytics and regression analysis were used to describe health literacy and examine associated factors. Older age, lower level of education, and living in rural areas were associated with lower health literacy while there was no significant relationship between gender and health literacy among newly admitted cancer patients. Many newly admitted patients, especially the older patients have difficulties understanding the different treatment options (54%) and evaluating the reliability of health information on the internet (43%). During the early stage of treatment, strategies should be implemented with regards to patients' health literacy, to properly educate patients and their caregivers to improve communication, adherence to medication, lifestyle, and overall better quality of life and treatment outcome.

Abstract
Identification of tumor-derived mutation (TDM) in liquid biopsies (LB), especially in early-stage patients, faces several challenges, including low variant-allele frequencies, interference by white blood cell (WBC)-derived mutations (WDM), benign somatic mutations and tumor heterogeneity. Here, we addressed the above-mentioned challenges in a cohort of 50 nonmetastatic colorectal cancer patients, via a workflow involving parallel sequencing of paired WBC- and tumor-gDNA. After excluding potential false positive mutations, we detected at least one TDM in LB of 56% (28/50) of patients, with the majority showing low-patient coverage, except for one TDM mapped to KMT2D that recurred in 30% (15/30) of patients.

Abstract
The anti-cancer activity of bannaxanthone E isolated from Garcinia mckeaniana leaves was assessed through a flow cytometric method on human lung SK-LU-1 cancer cells, including cell cycle changes and induction of cell apoptosis. Treatment with bannaxanthone E led to the suppression of cell cycle progression at the G2/M phase to 19.6% at 4 µM, and induced apoptosis via cell morphological changes, increased the fluorescence signal in caspase-3/7 activation, and accumulation of apoptotic cells in the SK-LU-1 line at 4 µM to 25.7%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Delays in diagnosis and treatment from first noticeable breast cancer symptoms are associated with poor outcomes. Understanding the reasons and barriers for patients' delay in seeking medical care is critical to mitigating the problem. METHODS In-person surveys were conducted among 462 women, aged 18-79, with incident breast cancer cases, recruited from two cancer hospitals in North Vietnam. Delay, defined as the time interval between symptom recognition to the diagnosis and initiation of treatment equal to or exceeding 3 months, was categorized as follows: no delay (<3 months), moderate delay (3-8 months), and serious delay (≥9 months). Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was applied in data analyses. RESULTS Over one-quarter patients (31.5%) experienced moderate delays, and close to one-fifth (17.5%) experienced serious delays. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for moderate and serious delays were 5.60 (3.00-10.47) and 4.25 (2.05-8.85) for financial and physical barriers, respectively. Moderate delay was positively associated with psychological barriers (5.55 [1.75-17.57]) and lack of proper knowledge (3.15 [1.47-6.74]). The associations of barriers with delays in diagnosis and treatment appeared stronger among women living in rural areas. A lack of proper knowledge was significantly associated with delay among young women (<45 years old) and those with high incomes, while psychological barriers were significantly associated with delay among older women (≥45 years old). CONCLUSION Delays in diagnosis and treatment are common among Vietnamese breast cancer patients and are affected by several noted barriers. Proper policy needs to be developed to address this public health issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study examined the financial toxicity faced by breast cancer (BC) patients in Vietnam and the factors associated with the risk and degree of that toxicity. METHODS A total of 309 BC patients/survivors completed an online survey (n=209) or a face-to-face interview (n=100) at two tertiary hospitals. Descriptive statistics and χ2 tests were used to identify and analyse the forms and degree of financial toxicity faced by BC patients/survivors. A Cragg hurdle model assessed variation in risk and the degree of financial toxicity due to treatment. RESULTS 41% of respondents faced financial toxicity due to BC treatment costs. The mean amount of money that exceeded BC patients/survivors' ability to pay was 153 million Vietnamese Dong (VND) ($6602) and ranged from 2.42 million VND to 1358 million VND ($104-58,413). A diagnosis at stage II or III of BC was associated with 16.0 and 18.0 million VND (~$690-777) more in the degree of financial toxicity compared with patients who were diagnosed at stage 0/I, respectively. Being retired or married or having full (100%) health insurance was associated with a decrease in the degree of financial toxicity. CONCLUSIONS A significant proportion of Vietnamese BC patients/survivors face serious financial toxicity due to BC treatment costs. There is a need to consider the introduction of measures that would attenuate this hardship and promote uptake of screening for the reduction in financial toxicity as well as the health gains it may achieve through earlier detection of cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Vietnam is undergoing rapid socio-economic transition with an increasing cancer burden. The contribution of modifiable risk factors to cancers in Vietnam has not been studied. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the attributable causes of cancer in Vietnam. METHODS We reviewed the data on burden of cancer in Vietnam from 2 cancer registries in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City between 1995 and 2012. Next, we calculated the fractions of cancers occurring in 2018 attributable to established modifiable risk factors whose impact could be quantified. Data on exposure prevalence were obtained for the period from 2000 to 2010 from national sources wherever possible. RESULTS Cancer incidence in Vietnam has decreased slightly in both sexes. Cancer related to infectious agents decreased sharply, whereas cancer related to nutrition and metabolism has increased. In 2018, established carcinogens included in the analysis explained 47.0% of cancer burden in Vietnam. Chronic infections accounted for 29.1% of cancers (34.7% in men and 22.1% in women), tobacco smoking for 13.5% (23.9% in men and 0.8% in women), and alcohol drinking for 10.3%. Passive smoking was responsible for 8.8% of cancers in women. Other risk factors, including overweight or obesity, nulliparity, and low vegetable and fruit intake, accounted for < 1% of all cancers each. CONCLUSION Cancer incidence is slowly decreasing in Vietnam, and the causes of more than half of cancers remain unexplained. This result underlines the need for further epidemiologic and fundamental research. Our findings confirm the notion that controlling oncogenic infections and decreasing tobacco smoking are the most effective approaches to reduce the burden of cancer in Vietnam, but other risk factors, including alcohol drinking and diet, should not be neglected.

Abstract
Background:Presently, there are no national screening programs for cancer in Vietnam. This study aimed to analyze the cost-effectiveness of an annual colorectal cancer (CRC) screening program from the healthcare service provider's perspective for the Vietnamese population.Methods:The economic model consisted of adecision tree and aMarkov model. Adecision tree was constructed for comparing two strategies, including ascreening group with aguaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) and ano-screening group in general populations, aged 50 years and above. The Markov model projected outcomes over a25-year horizon. The cost-effectiveness outcome was the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) represented by costs per quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs).Results:When compared with no screening, ICER was $1,388per QALY with an increased cost of $ 43.98 and again of 0.032 QALY (Willingness to pay $2,590). The uptake rate of gFOBT, cost of colonoscopy, and the total cost of screening contributed to the largest impact on the ICER. PSA showed that results were robust to variation in parameter estimates, with annual screening remaining cost-effective compared with no screening.Conclusion:Our screening strategy could be considered cost-effective compared to ano screening strategy. Our findings could be potentially used to develop aCRC national screening program.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Research on the needs of family caregivers of people living with cancer remains disproportionately focused in high income contexts. This research gap adds to the critical challenge on global equitable delivery of cancer care. This study describes the roles of family caregivers of people living with cancer in Vietnam and possible implications for intervention development. METHODS Semi-structured interviews and focus groups with family caregivers (n = 20) and health care providers (n = 22) were conducted in two national oncology hospitals. Findings were verified via workshops with carers (n = 11) and health care professionals (n = 28) in five oncology hospitals representing different regions of Vietnam. Data was analyzed collaboratively by an international team of researchers according to thematic analysis. RESULTS Family caregivers in Vietnam provide an integral role in the delivery of inpatient cancer care. In the hospital environment families are responsible for multiple roles including feeding, hydration, changing, washing, moving, wound care and security of personal belongings. Central to this role is primary decision making in terms of treatment and end-of-life care; relaying information, providing nutritional, emotional and financial support. Families are forced to manage severe complications and health care needs with minimal health literacy and limited health care professional input. CONCLUSIONS Understanding context and the unique roles of family caregivers of people living with cancer is critical in the development of supportive services. As psycho-oncology develops in low and middle income contexts, it is essential that family caregiver roles are of significant importance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The best treatment therapy for gastrointestinal cancer patients is assessed by the improvement of health status and quality of life (QoL) after treatments. Malnutrition is related to loss of muscle strengths which leads to lower physical performance and emotional status. Thus, this study aimed to estimate the effects of nutritional interventions on the improvement of QoL among gastrointestinal patients undergoing chemotherapy in Vietnam. METHODS A quasi-experiment with intervention and control groups for pre- and post-intervention assessment was carried out at the Department of Oncology and Palliative Care-Hanoi Medical University Hospital from 2016 to 2019. Sixty gastrointestinal cancer patients were recruited in each group. The intervention regimen consisted of nutritional counseling, a specific menu with a recommended amount of energy, protein, and formula milk used within 2 months. Nutritional status and QoL of patients were evaluated using The Scored Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). The difference in differences (DiD) method was utilized to estimate the outcome between control and intervention groups. RESULTS After the intervention, patients of the intervention group had better changes in scores of global health status (Coef =16.68; 95% CI =7.90; 25.46), physical (Coef =14.51; 95% CI =5.34; 23.70), and role functioning (Coef =14.67; 95% CI =1.63; 27.70) compared to the control group. Regarding symptom scales, the level of fatigue, pain, and insomnia symptoms significantly reduced between pre- and post-intervention in the intervention group. In addition, living in urban areas, defined as malnourished and having low prealbumin levels, were positively associated with the lower global health status/QoL score. CONCLUSION Nutritional therapy with high protein was beneficial to the improvement in QoL, physical function and the reduction of negative symptoms among gastrointestinal cancer patients. Early individualized nutritional support in consultation with professional dietitians during chemotherapy plays an integral part in enhancing the QoL and better treatment prognosis. Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to analyze the treatment outcome and toxicities, along with prognosis factors of patients with FIGO 2018 stage III cervical cancer treated with definitive concurrent chemoradiation. Methods: A total of 83 stage III cervical cancer patients with good performance status (ECOG PS 0, 1) were treated with three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) combined with chemotherapy (weekly cisplatin), followed by high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy between January 2017 and March 2019 at Vietnam National Cancer hospital. Treatment outcomes and prognosis factors were assessed along with acute and late toxicities. Results: The 3-year DFS was 67.8% and 3-year OS was 80.3%. On multivariate analyses, short axis of pelvic lymph node diameter of ≥ 15mm, invasion of the lower third of vagina and para-aortic lymph node metastasis were identified as adverse prognostic factors for DFS. The cumulative incidence rate of gastrointestinal and genitourinary toxicity (≥ grade 2) at the 3-year follow-up were 29.6% and 11.6%, respectively. Conclusions: 3D CRT and HDR brachytherapy with concurrent chemotherapy is an effective treatment, with acceptable toxicity for FIGO 2018 stage III cervical cancer in Vietnam.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy combined with lymphadenectomy is widely utilized worldwide for treating non-small cell lung cancer. We evaluated the long-term survival outcomes of this approach and determined the prognostic factors of overall survival. METHODS This prospective observational study was performed in patients with non-small cell lung cancer who were subjected to video-assisted lobectomy and lymphadenectomy from 2012 to 2016. Independent prognostic factors were determined via uni- and multivariable Cox models. RESULTS There were 109 patients with the mean age of 59.2 years and males accounted for 54.1%. Postoperative staging determined 22.9% of stage IA, 31.2% of stage IB, 16.5% of stage IIA and 29.4% of stage IIIA. Median follow-up time was 27 months. The overall survival rate after 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 years was 100%, 85.9%, 65.3%, 55.9% and 55.9%, respectively. In univariable analysis, smoking (hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 2.50 [1.18-5.31]), Tumor--nodes--metastases (TNM) stage (IIA: 7.60 [1.57-36.9]; IIIA: 14.3 [3.28-62.7] compared to IA), histological differentiation (moderately differentiated: 4.91 [1.04-23.2]; poorly differentiated: 8.25 [1.91-35.6] compared to well differentiated), lymph node size ≥1 cm (8.22 [3.11-21.7]), tumour size ≥3 cm (4.24 [1.01-17.9]), radical lymphadenectomy (6.67 [3.14-14.2]) were identified as prognostic factors of the long-term survival. In multivariable analysis, only radical lymphadenectomy was an independent prognostic factor (HR [95% CI]: 3.94 [1.41-11.0]). CONCLUSION Video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy combined with lymphadenectomy is feasible, safe and effective for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The long-term outcomes of this method are favourable, especially at the early stage of cancer.

Abstract
Asian Americans (AAs) are heterogeneous, and aggregation of diverse AA populations in national reporting may mask high-risk groups. Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers constitute one-third of global cancer mortality, and an improved understanding of GI cancer mortality by disaggregated AA subgroups may inform future primary and secondary prevention strategies. Using national mortality records from the United States from 2003 to 2017, we report age-standardized mortality rates, standardized mortality ratios and annual percent change trends from GI cancers (esophageal, gastric, colorectal, liver and pancreatic) for the six largest AA subgroups (Asian Indians, Chinese, Filipinos, Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese). Non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) are used as the reference population. We found that mortality from GI cancers demonstrated nearly 3-fold difference between the highest (Koreans, 61 per 100 000 person-years) and lowest (Asian Indians, 21 per 100 000 person-years) subgroups. The distribution of GI cancer mortality demonstrates high variability between subgroups, with Korean Americans demonstrating high mortality from gastric cancer (16 per 100 000), and Vietnamese Americans demonstrating high mortality from liver cancer (19 per 100 000). Divergent temporal trends emerged, such as increasing liver cancer burden in Vietnamese Americans, which exacerbated existing mortality differences. There exist striking differences in the mortality burden of GI cancers by disaggregated AA subgroups. These data highlight the need for disaggregated data reporting, and the importance of race-specific and personalized strategies of screening and prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vietnam has experienced a rapid increase in cancer incidence with many cancers (70%) being diagnosed at a late stage. The majority of physical and psychosocial care is provided by caregivers with minimal professional input. Due to limited resources in hospitals and social and cultural norms regarding caregiving in Vietnam, caregivers provide a range of supportive functions for family members diagnosed with cancer. OBJECTIVES This study sought to provide empirical evidence on the self-identified unmet needs of caregivers of inpatients in national oncology hospitals in Vietnam. METHODS Focus groups and in-depth interviews were conducted with caregivers (n = 20) and health care providers (n = 22) in national oncology hospitals in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Data was collaboratively analysed using thematic analysis. Findings were validated through key stakeholder group discussions with both caregivers and healthcare providers across multiple regions in Vietnam. RESULTS Analysis demonstrated that the burden of informal care is high with many caregivers managing patient's severe and complex health needs with minimal support. Caregivers highlighted four main areas of critical need: (i) challenges in providing long term care, particularly in hospital and in-patient settings, such as accessing comfortable facilities, accommodation and finance; (ii) information needs about cancer, treatment, and nutrition; (iii) support for the emotional impact of cancer; and (iv) training about how to provide care to their family members during treatment and recovery phases. CONCLUSIONS Caregivers provide invaluable support in supporting people with a cancer diagnosis, particularly given wider systemic challenges in delivering cancer services in Vietnam. Increasing visibility and formal support is likely to have both a positive impact upon the health and wellbeing of caregivers, as well as for cancer patients under their care. Given its absence, it is critical that comprehensive psychosocial care is developed for caregivers in Vietnam.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Although cancer is common in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, the community awareness is still unknown. The primary objective of this study was to examine and compare the knowledge and risk perceptions of cancer possessed by cancer patients - relatives and healthy adults in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to August 2019. Cancer patients and their relatives were drawn from those who were hospitalized in the Oncology Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City. Healthy individuals were those without a known diagnosis of cancer, and they were drawn from the participants of the Vietnam Osteoporosis Study. A total of 533 participants including 249 patients and relatives (cancerous group) and 284 healthy individuals (healthy group), were asked to respond to a structured questionnaire that was comprised of items concerning cancer knowledge, risk factor perception, and general attitude towards cancer, using Yes, No, or Likert Scale for response. Results: The findings showed that patients hold poorer knowledge of pathology, signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment and lower awareness of risk factors but more positive attitude towards cancer as compared to their healthy counterparts. Overall, both groups varied in their cancer knowledge, with many areas remain to be improved. Conclusions: Knowledge about cancer and its risk factors should be improved among the general population as well as among those with direct experiences with cancer. Practical implications: The findings provided by this study has major implications for the design of an educational program for cancer patients in clinical settings and awareness programs for the general public as a primary preventive measure for mitigating the cancer burden. Future studies with larger and more diverse samples or qualitative studies exploring the personal narratives of people living with cancer could take advantage from the preliminary data provided by this study.

Abstract
The incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased rapidly in Vietnam, but the economic burden of this disease has never been estimated. We estimate the direct and indirect cost of CRC patients in Vietnam in 2018 using a prevalence-based approach and human capital method. The total economic cost of CRC was VND 3041.88 billion (~$132.9 million), representing 0.055% of the 2018 gross domestic product. Notably, indirect costs comprised 83.58 % of the total cost, 82.61% of which is future income loss, because CRC occurs during productive years. The economic burden of CRC in Vietnam is substantial. The medical cost for CRC diagnosis and treatment is higher for younger patients and for those in advanced stages. Strategies to decrease the economic burden of CRC at the patient and national level, such as screening programs, should be developed and implemented in Vietnam.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cervical cancer is a major disease burden in Vietnam. This study aimed to estimate the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer in Vietnam (1999-2017) in comparison to those in Korea, where a population-based cancer registry and national cervical cancer screening program have been implemented. METHODS The estimated incidence and mortality of cervical cancer in Vietnam and Korea (1999-2017) were collected from Global Burden of Disease 2017 study. Estimated age-standardized rates (ASRs) in both countries were calculated utilizing the 1999-2017 population of each country and the World Health Organization standard population. The reported ASRs in Korea were also computed using data on incidence and mortality (1999-2017) and the Korean population from the Korea Statistical Information Service. RESULTS In Vietnam, the estimated incidence and mortality of cervical cancer decreased annually by 0.84% and 1.01%. In Korea, the trend of reported incidence showed a dramatic drop (1999-2007 annual percent change [APC], -4.53%) before stably declining (2007-2017 APC, -2.71%). Reported mortality also significantly decreased (2003-2008 APC, -6.63%), and then maintained a stable decline (2008-2017 APC, -3.78%). The incidence and mortality rates were higher in Vietnam than in Korea. The declining trend of incidence and mortality in Vietnam was slower than the corresponding trends in Korea. CONCLUSIONS A national screening program should be implemented for Vietnamese women aged over 30 to maintain, or even hasten, the decline in cervical cancer incidence and mortality. A population-based cancer registry may help monitor the effectiveness of a cervical cancer screening program.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Survival outcomes in patients with unresectable colorectal cancer (CRC) liver metastasis treated by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with systemic chemotherapy and correlation with potential prognostic factors were investigated. Material and Methods. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 61 CRC patients with unresectable liver metastasis who underwent liver tumor-directed percutaneous RFA combined with conventional systemic chemotherapy between October 2013 and September 2018. Survival analyses were conducted using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test was used to characterize differences in the median survival time and the 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year overall survival rates of subgroups to identify prognostic factors. RESULTS Median overall survival and progression-free survival of all patients were 32 and 14 months, respectively. The cumulative survival rates at 1-, 3-, and 5-years were 93.2%; 44.5%, and 38.2%, respectively. Univariate analysis revealed that pre-RFA serum CEA levels, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) status, number of liver lesions, the size of the largest lesion, and the total lesion size were prognostic factors. However, multivariate analysis demonstrated that only the number of liver lesions and the size of the largest lesion were independent prognostic factors for survival. CONCLUSION RFA plus systemic chemotherapy provides an encouraging survival outcome for patients with unresectable CRC liver metastasis. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the number and size of liver metastatic lesions are independent prognostic factors for survival.

Abstract
Tumor heterogeneity and resistance to chemotherapy have been recognized as two major obstacles in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). Microsatellite instability (MSI) and KRAS and BRAF mutations are common diagnostic factors that have been widely used to classify CRC for therapeutics. In the present study, 151 patients with CRC were analyzed from the two most populous ethnic groups of Vietnam, Kinh and Muong, for their MSI status, frequency of KRAS and BRAF mutations, and their clinical implications. MSI-high (MSI-H) was detected in 45.0% (68/151), while mutated KRAS and BRAF were identified in 37.1% (56/151) and 2.6% (4/151) of the cases, respectively. There was a substantial co-existence of MSI-H with KRAS (27/56; 48.2%) and BRAF (3/4; 75.0%) mutations. Statistical analysis showed that MSI-H tumors were significantly associated with colon location (P=0.011) and more advanced T stages (P=0.016). KRAS exon 2 mutations were significantly more likely to be detected in patients who belonged to the Muong ethnic group (P=0.013) or those with no/fewer lymph node metastasis (P=0.048) as compared with their counterparts. In summary, the data revealed typical molecular features of Vietnamese patients with CRC, including a strikingly high rate of MSI-H and its high co-existence with KRAS and BRAF mutations, which should be carefully considered in the future therapeutics for this type of cancer.

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 262 newly admitted patients of a cancer hospital in Vietnam. The Vietnamese version EORTC-30 questionnaire 3.0 was used to interviews patients during the first week after their admission. Lower global quality of life and physical functioning scores were significantly associated with older age, lung and gastrointestinal cancers. Emotional functioning score was lower among female patients as compared to males. Financial difficulty was an important preditor for almost all functional scales. Management of early symptoms, providing early emotional supports and appropriate policies to reduce financial difficulty are important to improve cancer patients' quality of life.

Abstract
Colon cancer is the third major cancer contributor to mortality worldwide. Nanosized particles have attracted attention due to their possible contribution towards cancer treatment and diagnosis. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cancer therapeutic modality that involves a light source, a photosensitizer and reactive oxygen species. Carbon nanotubes are fascinating nanocarriers for drug delivery, cancer diagnosis and numerous potential applications due to their unique physicochemical properties. In this study, single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were coupled with hyaluronic acid (HA) and chlorin e6 (Ce6) coated on the walls of SWCNTs. The newly synthesized nanobiocomposite was characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform electron microscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), particle size analysis and zeta potential. The loading efficiency of the SWCNTs-HA for Ce6 was calculated. The toxicity of the nanobiocomposite was tested on colon cancer cells using PDT at a fluence of 5 J/cm2 and 10 J/cm2. After 24 h, cellular changes were observed via microscopy, LDH cytotoxicity assay and cell death induction using annexin propidium iodide. The results showed that the newly synthesized nanobiocomposite enhanced the ability of PDT to be a photosensitizer carrier and induced cell death in colon cancer cells.
