Abstract
Background Previous studies have suggested that providing dietary guidance along with denture treatment may improve dietary diversity in edentulous patients; however, none have examined the effects on nutritional blood biomarkers. This study investigated the effects of individualized dietary guidance combined with complete denture treatment on nutritional blood biomarker levels, dietary intake, and masticatory function. Materials and methods This was a prospective, randomized, open-label, controlled trial. Patients seeking new dentures with at least one edentulous arch were randomly allocated to Group A (denture treatment only) or Group B (dietary guidance followed by denture treatment). Individualized dietary guidance was provided exclusively to Group B by dentists based on baseline assessments. Baseline and post-treatment assessments included blood tests, a dietary survey using the Brief-type Self-Administered Diet History Questionnaire (BDHQ), occlusal force measurements using pressure-sensitive film, and masticatory performance tests using gummy jelly. The results from the baseline and post-treatment assessments were compared within each group, and exploratory comparisons of changes were conducted between groups. Results A total of 39 individuals completed the protocol (20 in Group A and 19 in Group B; mean age 73.4 ± 10.6 years; 17 males, 22 females). Both groups showed a significant increase in occlusal force after treatment (P = 0.007 for Group A; P = 0.011 for Group B), while no improvement in blood biomarkers was observed. In Group B, the intake of fish with bones (P = 0.035) and non-oily fish (P = 0.030), as evaluated using the BDHQ, significantly increased after treatment. Group B also showed significantly greater increases than Group A in methionine (P = 0.012), lysine (P = 0.048), and total essential amino acids (P = 0.029), as evaluated by blood tests, as well as the intake of fish with bones (P = 0.043). Conclusion Although denture treatment may increase occlusal force, combining dietary guidance with prosthetic treatment appears to further enhance dietary habits and support the nutritional status of edentulous patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE This prospective cohort study examined the effects of the number of present and functional teeth on mortality among older Japanese adults requiring nursing care in an environment of comprehensive oral hygiene and nutritional management. METHODS The study included 174 older adults (mean age: 84.4 ± 8.3 years; male/female: 49/125) in need of support or long-term care, who resided in either a local specialized healthcare facility or their own homes, and received daily oral hygiene and nutritional support at facilities in Okayama, Japan. The initial clinical oral examination along with assessment of general physical condition and nursing environment of the participants were performed in July 2013 and followed up for one year. RESULTS All-cause mortality occurred in 28 (mean age: 88.7 ±13.4 years; male/female: 6 /22) individuals during the follow-up period. Cox proportional hazard analysis indicated that older age, low performance in activities of daily living (Barthel Index <40), and underweight status (body mass index <18.5) were significant risk factors for mortality. The number of present and functional teeth were not found to be significant risk factors for mortality. CONCLUSIONS During the one-year follow-up period, the number of present and functional teeth did not have a significant impact on mortality among older Japanese adults requiring nursing care in a well-managed environment of oral hygiene and nutritional status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Single midline implants in the edentulous mandible can be used to support existing complete dentures to improve patients' satisfaction and masticatory efficiency. The impact on patients' dietary habits and the influence of the loading protocol of the implants was the subject of this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this prospective randomized clinical trial, edentulous patients with existing complete dentures in both jaws were treated with a single midline implant in the mandible. In group A, the implants were loaded immediately, in group B the loading was delayed after three months. Patients were asked to report on their nutritional intake before implant placement and 12, 24 and 60 months after loading using a standardized two-part questionnaire. RESULTS Nutritional intake regarding the frequency of consumption of the requested food items did not change significantly during the 60-months study period, regardless of the loading protocol. In contrast, the second part of the questionnaire revealed that after 60 months, there was a significant decrease in avoidance of food, that had a coarse and hard texture in both groups. This significant decrease was observable in the group A in the first 12 and 24 months and in the group B after 60 months. CONCLUSION A change in the patients' dietary habits due to the insertion of a single midline implant in the mandible to support the existing complete denture cannot be observed, independently to the loading protocol. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Improving the chewing efficiency by single midline implants in the edentulous mandible does not lead to a change in dietary habits.

Abstract
Introduction Patients who have jaw or tongue defects owing to head and neck cancer or congenital disease suffer from oral dysfunction such as speech, swallowing, and mastication. Although maxillofacial prostheses are applied to improve oral functions, their oral functions remain compromised compared to those of patients without jaw or tongue defects. On the other hand, it has been reported that oral hypofunction could lead to malnutrition in the general elderly. However, to date, no reports have evaluated the relationship between oral function and nutritional status in patients with maxillofacial prostheses. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated oral function according to the examination items for oral hypofunction. We assessed which functions were related to nutritional status in patients with jaw defects caused by tumors or congenital diseases who are candidates for maxillofacial prosthetic treatment. Methods Patients who underwent prosthetic treatment at the Department of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, Aichi-Gakuin University Dental Hospital, between May 2021 and January 2024 and who were doing well were included in the study. Oral function was assessed with seven tests according to the criteria of the Japanese Society of Geriatric Dentistry, and nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF). Patients were classified according to age and type of deficiency. Additionally, the presence or absence of oral hypofunction and malnutrition or risk of malnutrition were assessed. The impact of oral hypofunction tests and defect status on the risk of malnutrition was evaluated using a logistic regression model. Results Oral hypofunction and malnutrition or risk of malnutrition were more frequent in the elderly group by age. Regarding the type of defect, the rate of oral hypofunction and malnutrition or risk of malnutrition was highest in the tongue defect group. Results of the logistic regression analysis indicated that nutritional status was associated with tongue deficiency, tongue-lip motor function, tongue pressure, and swallowing function. Conclusion The nutritional status of maxillofacial prosthetic wearers was associated with oral hypofunction. Particularly, malnutrition and risk of malnutrition were increased with tongue defects and deficiencies in tongue-lip motor function, tongue pressure, and swallowing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth loss is associated with suboptimal nutrient intake and greater risk of malnutrition. OBJECTIVE To develop and field-test a stakeholder-informed diet education tool that addresses the unique needs of older adults with tooth loss who do not wear dentures. METHODS An iterative user-centered approach was used. Initial content was developed based on findings from previous research. Stakeholder panels of older adults with 20 or fewer teeth, and dentists, were conducted at two time points to obtain feedback on the tool, which was revised following each panel. The tool was field-tested in a dental school clinic and evaluated using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool; it was further revised based on feedback. RESULTS A diet education tool entitled "Eating Healthier With Tooth Loss" was developed. Sections for fruits and vegetables, grains, and proteins food groups, and one addressing socioemotional aspects of eating with missing teeth were included. Panel members provided constructive, positive feedback; recommendations for editing text, images, design, and content were integrated. Field-testing in the dental clinic with 27 pairs of student dentists and their patients resulted in scores of 95.7% for understandability and 96.6% for actionability, with over 85% agreement with each item. The tool was revised based on field-testing feedback. CONCLUSION A diet education tool for older adults with tooth loss was developed using a user-centered approach, integrating the 'patient voice' and patient experiences with US dietary guidelines. Use of this tool is feasible in a dental clinic setting. Future research should explore usage in larger settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to capture General Dental Practitioners' (GDPs) views on delivering dietary advice to older adults in combination with treatment to replace missing teeth and identify solutions to help inform the development and implementation of future dietary interventions within primary dental care. BACKGROUND As natural teeth are lost, older adults may need to choose softer, more manageable foods which might be of lower nutrient density. Previous research has indicated that prosthodontic rehabilitation can improve masticatory function but not the intake of nutrients, highlighting a potential need for a combined approach of oral rehabilitation and dietary counselling. MATERIALS AND METHODS Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with a purposive sampling strategy of 12 GDPs. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. An iterative coding process using theme-analytic methods was used. RESULTS Twelve interviews were conducted with GDPs in the United Kingdom. The themes that emerged from the interviews included: the awareness of the importance of dietary advice among GDPs; the concerns GDPs had on patients' adherence to dietary advice; uncertainty over roles and responsibilities in the provision of dietary advice; and the limited time and remuneration for dietary advice in dental practice. A minor theme identified was the motivation of GDPs to implement dietary advice alongside oral rehabilitation. All reported that they were already providing dietary advice to their patients but that this was limited to caries prevention. CONCLUSION The GDPs interviewed expressed positive attitudes towards providing dietary advice alongside oral rehabilitation for older adults. However, a lack of confidence, awareness, time and remuneration are barriers to its provision in primary dental care. To facilitate the implementation of dietary advice alongside oral rehabilitation, clear guidance on and training in delivering dietary advice and multidisciplinary cooperation are required.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), including memory loss, has been attracting attention in Japan. This study assessed the effect of new complete dentures provision alone and with dietary intervention on cognitive functions assessed using the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-J). A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 70 older adults who required new complete dentures. The participants had new complete dentures fabricated and were randomly classified into the intervention or control group. The intervention group received simple dietary advice, and the control group only received denture care advice. Cognitive function was assessed using the MoCA-J before and at 3 and 6 months after treatment. The between-group comparison and within-group comparison were analyzed. No significant differences were reported for comparisons between the intervention and control groups. A significant increase was revealed in the within-group comparisons for the total scores between the 3- and 6-month assessments (p = 0.002) and between the baseline and 6-month assessments (p = 0.012) in the intervention group. In the control group, a significant increase in the total scores was not revealed between any of evaluation period. Complete denture replacement combined with simple dietary intervention may help improve MoCA-J scores in edentulous older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review was undertaken to evaluate, whether a shortened dental arch (SDA) was a good alternative to a conventional prosthodontic rehabilitation (RPD) in older adults when nutritional and economic factors are compared. DATA A total of 92 studies were included for the full-text analysis, and finally 4 reports from two RCTs qualified for data extraction and analysis. The final search update was performed on 06.11.2022 and no further searches and updates were performed after this date. SOURCES Electronic databases [PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, CENTRAL] were systematically searched to identify studies comparing nutritional and economic outcomes in partially edentate adults rehabilitated with conventional RPD and SDA therapy. STUDY SELECTION Studies were excluded if there were less than 10 participants per group, and if the subjects were not clinically followed up in recall visits. Two investigators performed the data extraction and were reciprocally blinded. Inter-investigator reliability was assessed using Cohen's unweighted kappa (κ). A meta-analysis could not be performed and the results were reported qualitatively. RESULTS The calculated κ ranged between 0.80 and 1.00. Three reports from two studies reported on nutritional outcomes and one report provided information on economic benefits, when comparing between the SDA therapy and conventional prosthodontic rehabilitation. No significant difference was recorded in the nutritional status of patients rehabilitated using the SDA concept compared with RPDs. Higher costs for treatment provision and maintenance for patients in the RPD group was found when compared to SDA treatment. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review identified the shortened dental arch concept as a reasonable alternative to the conventional prosthodontic rehabilitation where cost-effectiveness and nutrition are concerned based on the limited evidence obtained from current literature. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE SDA therapy may be considered as a feasible treatment concept in older adults especially in those with complex medical statuses and limited finances.

Abstract
An ageing population presents significant nutritional challenges, particularly for partially dentate adults. This two-armed pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) compared habit formation (automaticity) for healthy eating behaviours between control and intervention groups after participation in a habit-based dietary intervention for older adults, following oral rehabilitation in the United Kingdom (UK). n = 54 participants were randomised to receive a habit-based dietary intervention (intervention group n = 27, IG) or standard dietary advice in a leaflet (control group n = 27, CG). The IG attended three sessions over six weeks, which focused on habit formation for three healthy eating behaviours (increasing fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, and healthy proteins). Participants were assessed for habit strength (using the Self-Report Behavioural Automaticity Index (SRBAI)) alongside health and nutrition outcomes at six weeks, four months and eight months. Forty-nine participants completed all follow-up visits. The IG compared to the CG had significant increases in automaticity at six weeks, four months (primary outcome) and eight months for eating ≥3 portions of fruit and vegetables; choosing wholegrain sources over white alternatives, and choosing healthy protein sources over red/processed meat. The mean change in the Mini Nutritional Assessment total score was greater in the IG compared with the CG at six weeks only (p = 0.03). A habit-based dietary intervention following oral rehabilitation increased automaticity for healthy dietary behaviours, which could translate into clinically meaningful benefits in this cohort of older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Although poor diet is a major driver of morbidity and mortality in people aged 60 and older, few dietary interventions are widely implemented for this population. We mapped behavior change theories, agents, and techniques in dietary interventions for adults aged 60 and older and explored relationships between these factors and ability to retain at least 80% of the study participants. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We conducted a scoping review using MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Web of Science through April 2021 for dietary interventions in adults aged 60 and older. We collated, summarized, and calculated frequency distributions of behavior change theories, behavior change agents, and behavior change techniques (BCTs) using BCTv1 taxonomy with regard to participant retention across 43 studies. RESULTS Only 49% and 30% of the studies reported behavior theory and change agents, respectively. Of the studies reporting on theory and agents, the most common were social cognitive theory and the related mechanism of self-efficacy. The most common BCTv1 clusters were "shaping knowledge" and "goals and planning." Several BCTv1 clusters such as "antecedents" and "reward and threat" and evidence for concordance between BCTs and change agents were more common in interventions with higher retention rates. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS Mechanistically concordant studies with BCTs that involve resource allocation and positive reinforcement through rewards may be advantageous for retention in dietary intervention for older adults. Future studies should continue developing theory and mechanism-oriented research. Furthermore, future studies should consider diversifying the portfolio of currently deployed BCTs and strengthening a concordance between BCTs and mechanisms of change.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A scoping review of available advice to address eating problems experienced by people who wear dentures was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The objective was to identify and map type, volume, and content of the available eating advice. METHODS Medline, CINAHL, and grey literature databases and Google were searched. Relevant content pertaining to study type, peer-review vs. grey literature, country of origin, advice content, and methods to evaluate effectiveness was mapped. RESULTS Of the 4591 records identified from peer-reviewed literature, 56 full papers underwent duplicate screening, resulting in 26 papers (from Germany (n = 1), Europe (n = 1), India (n = 2), Japan (n = 7), UK (n = 6), USA (n = 6), or other (n = 3)) being included in the review. These yielded 18 different items of relevant eating advice. Of the 258 screened websites, 63 were included, yielding 30 different items of eating advice. The most-cited advice was to eat soft food and avoid hard and sticky food, cut food into bite-sized pieces, and chew on both sides of the mouth and chew slowly and thoroughly. The identified advice was not supported by reference to peer-reviewed evidence. Advice included some conflicting messages and some advice was non-compliant with authoritative nutritional advice (e.g., avoid red meat, take a vitamin supplement). CONCLUSION There is support for providing eating advice at the time of denture provision. A broad range of advice based on clinical experience to support people who wear dentures to overcome the functional limitations exists. However, the efficacy of this advice in improving diet and eating experience has not been tested.

Abstract
Background Loss of masticatory function consequent to tooth loss has been associated with changes in food choices and insufficient nutritional intake. To date, interventions based on dental prostheses alone did not significantly improve nutrient intake. Pilot studies have shown positive impacts of interventions combining implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis with brief dietary advice. The relative contribution and the potential synergy of the components of such interventions need to be determined as it has major public health implications for the community-dwelling aging population that continues to disproportionately suffer from tooth loss and its consequences. Objective To assess the effect of rehabilitation of masticatory function with fixed implant supported dentures and nutrition education in older subjects with terminal dentition (stage IV periodontitis) or full edentulism. Methods A 2 × 2 factorial randomized controlled trial with 16-month follow-up of eligible adults (≥60 years) with loss of masticatory function consequent to full arch edentulism or terminal dentition (n = 120) will be conducted to test whether the rehabilitation of masticatory function with fixed implant supported dentures, nutrition education and/or their combination improves intake of fresh fruits and vegetables for aging subjects. The study has been designed to detect changes in fresh fruits and fresh vegetables intake at 4 months using the 24-h dietary recall method. Changes in protein as percentage of total energy, nutritional biomarkers, plasma metabolomics, oral and gut microbiome, quality of life and masticatory function will also be assessed. Discussion We hypothesize that receiving rehabilitation of masticatory function with fixed implant dentures together with nutrition education is the most effective intervention for improving nutrient intake in aging community-dwelling subjects with extensive tooth loss. The results of this study will assist in designing better treatment regimens, guide medical care for individual subjects, and inform public health and policy. Abstract
Inadequate and poor quality of diet and malnutrition are common and associated with adverse health outcomes, including morbidity and mortality, among older persons. This review aimed to establish the latest evidence from studies investigating the association between oral function and nutrition among older adults. An electronic search of MEDLINE using PubMed for literature published in English between March 2018 and March 2021 was conducted, and 27 papers were identified. The selected studies comprised 23 observational studies (17 cross-sectional and 6 longitudinal studies) and 4 interventional studies. Most of the observational studies demonstrated the following associations in older adults: older adults with poor oral function are likely to have poorer dietary intake and poorer nutritional status, and malnourished older adults are likely to have poorer oral function. The results of the intervention studies demonstrated that the combination of prosthodontic treatment and dietary counseling is more effective for improving dietary intake and nutritional status in older persons with tooth loss than the prosthodontic treatment alone. Our review confirmed that a relationship exists between oral function and nutrition and revealed the need for additional high-quality studies investigating comprehensive oral function, rather than a single aspect of oral function, with regard to nutritional status.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A key purpose of denture provision is to enable eating, yet the body of evidence pertaining to the impact of dentures on wide-ranging nutritional outcomes has not been systematically reviewed. OBJECTIVES To systematically review published evidence pertaining to the effect of wearing removable dental prosthesis on dietary intake, nutritional status, eating function, and eating related-quality of life (ERQoL). METHODS Eight questions relating to the impact of wearing dentures on nutritional outcomes were addressed. The target population was healthy adults aged ≥18 y. Data sources included Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and PubMed. Included were all human epidemiologic studies. The Newcastle-Ottawa score was used for appraisal of study quality. Harvest plots, vote counting, and accompanying narrative provided the basis for synthesis. RESULTS Of the 1,245 records identified, 134 were retrieved and eligibility assessed by 2 reviewers, and 41 studies were included in the synthesis (14 rated good quality, 20 fair, and 7 poor). The balance of data supported a positive impact of wearing full (5/7 studies) or partial (3/3 studies) dentures (vs. no dentures) on nutritional status, though no clear direction of effect was detected for the impact of dentures on dietary intake. The balance of data clearly showed that objective measures of eating function were compromised in full (14/15 studies) and partial (6/7 studies) denture wearers as compared with the dentate. Data showed that ERQoL was also compromised in denture wearers as compared with the dentate (3/3 studies). However, data showed a positive impact of wearing dentures on ERQoL (5/5 studies) as opposed to wearing no dentures. CONCLUSION The balance of evidence shows that despite no clear pattern on impact of wearing dentures on measured dietary intake, in those with tooth loss, wearing dentures can have a positive impact on nutritional status and enjoyment of eating. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT The results of this systematic review can be used to advocate for health care services to address prosthodontic need to benefit nutritional outcomes. The findings will be of use in educating health care professionals on the impact of wearing dentures and not addressing prosthodontic need on nutritional outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This cross-sectional study compared gait performance between community-dwelling older adults with and without accumulated deficits in oral health, defined as oral frailty. METHODS A total of 1,082 individuals (439 men and 643 women; mean age, 77.1 years) from the Takashimadaira study were included in the current analysis. Based on a multifaceted oral health assessment, oral frailty was defined as having three or more of the following six components: (i) fewer teeth, (ii) low masticatory performance, (iii) low articulatory oral motor skills, (iv) low tongue pressure, (v) difficulties in eating, and (vi) swallowing. Eight gait parameters were assessed using an electronic walkway. Gait characteristics comparison between groups with and without oral frailty was performed using multiple linear regression models. Models were adjusted for age, sex, educational status, income, smoking, drinking, physical activity level, height, body mass index, comorbidities, and the presence of chronic pain. RESULTS Oral frailty was observed in 227 (21.0%) participants. After adjusting for potential confounders, the participants with oral frailty had slower gait speed, shorter stride and step length, wider step width, and longer double support duration as well as higher variability of stride length and step length. CONCLUSIONS Oral frailty was associated with poor gait performance among community-dwelling older adults.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between objective chewing ability and the nutritional status of Japanese community-dwelling elders. Design: A cross-sectional study. Participants: A total of 509 community-dwelling elders living in the Tokyo metropolitan area participated in a comprehensive survey conducted in October 2013. Measurements: The basic characteristics were sex, age, and body mass index. Undernutrition was examined through serum albumin levels. Chewing ability was examined through color-changeable xylitol gum by evaluating the color changes in chewing gum. Nutritional intake was examined using the semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Results: In the poor chewing ability group, all nutrient intake levels were significantly low, except for carbohydrates, and intake levels for all food groups were significantly low, except for cereals, confectionery, sugars, seasonings, and spices. Additionally, after adjusting for covariates for sex, age, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology-Index of Competence (TMIG-IC) score, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score, body mass index (BMI), stroke, number of functional teeth, energy intake, and protein intake, chewing ability was found to be significantly associated with undernutrition. Conclusion: We concluded that chewing ability was closely associated with nutrient and different food groups’ intake, as well as undernutrition, among Japanese community-dwelling elders. Thus, to ensure comprehensive nutritional management, nutritionists and dentists should collaborate when treating the same patients.

Abstract
Oral health has a symbiotic relationship with general health, with oral disease recognised to have an adverse effect on the overall systemic health of a patient. Deterioration in oral health has been shown to have an impact on the severity of chronic systemic diseases, nutrition, hydration and psychological and social wellbeing. Part 1 of this mini-series explored the common oral conditions that community patients may present with, and the role of the nursing team in aiding the prevention, diagnosis and management of these conditions. Following on from that, this article discusses the links between oral and general health, and preservation of a patient's quality of life. This article also aims to support nurses' knowledge on how to assess the oral health needs of patients, support oral care provision, how to access acute and elective dental services and signpost to additional supportive resources.

Abstract

Through interviews and in their own words, we recap highlights of their dental research journeys and inspirations, their career trajectories toward the IADR presidency, and the benefits and challenges that they faced in their careers and personal lives. The purpose of this special issue is to honor these women, their life journeys, and how they have contributed to oral health research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate associations between food avoidance and dental status, age, gender, and socio-economic status (SES). MATERIALS AND METHODS The Chinese sample comprised 1463 dentulous (≥ 1 tooth in each jaw) and 124 edentulous (in one or both jaws) participants aged ≥ 40 yrs. The Vietnamese sample comprised 2820 dentulous and 253 edentulous participants aged ≥ 20 yrs. Food avoidance due to chewing difficulties was scored for regionally common 4 soft and 4 hard foods. Dental status was classified according to the multi-level hierarchical dental functional classification system (HDFC) based on the number and location of teeth and posterior occlusal pairs. Associations were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS For dentulous participants, the chance of avoiding foods was significantly larger with < 10 teeth in each jaw (OR = 2.26 (Chinese sample), respectively 1.74 (Vietnamese sample)), incomplete anterior region (OR = 1.78, respectively 1.84), "impaired" premolar region (OR = 2.22, respectively 1.71), or "impaired" molar region (OR = 2.46, respectively 1.84). Edentulous participants had twice the chance of avoiding foods (OR = 2.01 respectively 2.20). Avoiding foods was significantly associated with higher age. Participants of low SES (Chinese sample, OR = 1.93) and females (Vietnamese sample, OR = 1.27) had a larger chance of avoiding foods. CONCLUSIONS Avoiding foods was significantly associated with reduced dentitions, edentulousness, and higher age; low SES only in the Chinese and being female only in the Vietnamese sample. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Incomplete anterior regions, "impaired" premolar or molar regions, and especially edentulousness can be considered significant risk indicators for food avoidance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many factors determine dietary intake in older adults, including physical health, psychological well-being and socio-economic status. Dental status may also be important. The aim was to examine how dental status impacts perceived ability to eat to certain foods, nutrient intake and nutritional status in UK older adults. METHODS Data collected by the National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme was analysed. A 4-day food diary assessed dietary intake, while a Computer Assisted Personal Interview collected socio-demographic, health behaviour and oral health information. Participants aged 65 years and over (n = 1053) were categorised into three groups according to their dental status: edentate with dentures (E-DEN, n = 292), dentate with dentures (D-DEN, n = 305) or dentate with no dentures (DEN, n = 456). A total of 515 participants provided a blood sample that was used to assess nutrient concentrations including vitamin B12, vitamin C, ferritin, vitamin B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate, PLP), retinol, β-carotene and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D). Multiple regression methods were performed to examine cross-sectional associations between dental status, food selection, nutrient intake and nutritional status. RESULTS Both E-DEN and D-DEN groups, compared with the DEN group, were more likely to report difficulty eating apples, raw carrots, lettuce, nuts, well-cooked steak and crusty bread (P < 0.01). No group differences were observed in perceived ability to eat sliced bread, sliced cooked meats and cheese. The E-DEN group compared with the DEN group had lower mean daily intakes of omega 3 fatty acids (P = 0.006), non-starch polysaccharides (P = 0.001), β-carotene (P = 0.001), folate (P = 0.001), vitamin C (P = 0.008), magnesium (P < 0.001) and potassium (P < 0.001), and had lower plasma vitamin B6 PLP (P = 0.001), vitamin C (P = 0.009) and β-carotene (P = 0.015) concentrations, after adjusting for socio-demographic and health behavioural factors. Compared with the DEN group, the D-DEN group did not have lower nutrient intakes or lower blood nutrient concentrations. CONCLUSIONS Within this sample of older adults, impaired dental status appears to influence food selection, and intake of important nutrients. Future research should focus on developing dental interventions coupled with dietary counselling to encourage the adoption of healthy eating habits in this high-risk population group.

Abstract
Background:
Tooth loss reduces masticatory function. Insufficient masticatory function causes an increase in carbohydrate intake while decreasing the intake of foods with a low Glycemic Index (GI) and high in protein, antioxidants, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Protein-energy malnutrition may lead to metabolic syndrome, frailty, and faster onset of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Individuals with tooth loss resulting in problematic eating habits require behavior modification and health guidance.
Objective:
This report aims to evaluate the influence of dental prostheses combined with health guidance on body composition and metabolic parameters.
Methods:
Data were collected from three subjects: Two with molar loss and one with edentulism. Masticatory function was restored in each subject through prosthodontic treatment. Masticatory performance was evaluated before and after the prosthodontic treatment by having the subjects chew a gummy jelly and measuring the glucose extraction. Questionnaires were used to assess food intake and lifestyle habits. Health guidance based on the results of the questionnaires was conducted simultaneously with the prosthodontic intervention. Body composition and blood pressure were measured and blood tests were performed at baseline and around 90 days after the first health guidance session.
Results:
Masticatory ability, body-mass index, basal metabolism standard value, body-fat percentage, and intake of certain nutrients improved in all cases. Blood pressure and hemoglobin A1c improved in two cases.
Conclusion:
Masticatory function recovery combined with health guidance was effective in preventing the onset or deterioration of NCDs in patients with masticatory dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the effect of conventional complete dentures fabricated using two different impression methods on masticatory performance and factors relating to masticatory performance in a randomized controlled trial. METHODS A crossover randomized controlled trial was performed with edentulous patients requiring maxillomandibular complete dentures. Mandibular complete dentures were fabricated using two different methods. The conventional method (C) used a custom tray border molded with an impression compound and a silicone. The simplified method (S) used a stock tray and an alginate. Participants were randomly divided into the two groups. In the C-S group, the conventional method was used first, followed by the simplified method; the order was reversed in the SC group. Adjustments were performed four times. The wash out period was 1 month. Masticatory performance as assessed by the mixing of a color-changeable chewing gum (mixing ability). Maximum occlusal force, occlusal contact area, and perceived chewing ability were assessed for each group. RESULTS Twenty-seven patients underwent randomization and 24 participants completed the trial. With regard to occlusal contact area, the conventional method showed significantly larger occlusal contact area than the simplified method. No significant differences were observed between the two methods regarding mixing ability, maximum occlusal force, and perceived chewing ability. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that complete dentures fabricated with the conventional method had a significantly larger occlusal contact area than those made using the simplified method. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Complete dentures fabricated with the conventional method, comprising a preliminary impression using alginate in a stock tray followed by a final impression using silicone impression material in a border molded custom tray, resulted in fewer post-insertion adjustments than the simplified method, potentially contributing to earlier stability of new dentures.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of age, gender, mandibular bone height, previous experience with prostheses, and methods for denture fabrication on masticatory performance of complete denture (CD) wearers. MATERIALS AND METHODS For this study, 29 individuals treated with CDs fabricated by simplified or conventional methods had their masticatory performance assessed 4 weeks after the prostheses' adjustment and control, using the sieve method and almonds as a natural food test. Experimental variables related to age, gender, and previous use of complete dentures were collected from dental records. Panoramic digital radiographs were used to determine mandibular bone height according to the criteria described by the American College of Prosthodontists. Data on masticatory performance were assessed using t-test for independent samples to make comparison between simplified and conventional methods, and a multiple linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of age, gender, previous experience with CDs, and mandibular bone height on masticatory performance using SPSS software with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS There was no significant influence regarding the method for CD fabrication (p = 0.92), age (p = 0.36), mandibular bone height (p = 0.37), and previous experience with prostheses (p = 0.15) on masticatory performance of CD wearers. Female patients presented lower masticatory performance than male (p = 0.04) patients did. CONCLUSIONS Considering the limitations of this study, it was concluded that gender might be considered a risk factor for masticatory performance of CD wearers. Female patients demonstrated reduced masticatory performance in comparison to male patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Proper nutrition and physical exercises are essential to prevent frailty in older adults. Proper masticatory performance and oral function may influence on physical activities as well since the mouth is the entrance of nutrition and digestion. Thus, the present study aimed to test the combined program of specially devised lunch gatherings containing textured foods with oral and physical exercises on the improvement of oral and physical function in community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN A Cluster randomized controlled trial; Setting and Participants: Eighty-six community-dwelling older adults in Daito city, Japan, were randomly assigned into control (n = 43) or intervention (n = 43) groups. INTERVENTION The control group performed the physical exercise regimen only. The intervention group participated in a 12-week physical and oral exercise program and ate a so-called "munchy lunch" that introduced textured foods with proper nutrients together after performing the physical exercise twice a week following brief dietary instruction at the intervention onset. Physical training and lunch gatherings were held at local public centers. MEASUREMENTS The differences in measured variables for physical and oral function between baseline and 12 weeks of intervention were statistically tested. RESULTS Oral function as measured by tongue pressure increased significantly in the intervention group (p=0.031), but not in the control group. Physical properties and activities, including body fat percentage and results of the timed up and go test, decreased more significantly in the intervention group than in controls (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that a combined program of textured lunch gatherings with oral and physical exercises may improve physical and oral function as a preventative approach for frailty in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze implant and prosthetic survival rates, complications, patient satisfaction, and biological parameters of patients rehabilitated with implant overdentures (IOV) on splinted and nonsplinted implants and different attachment systems, in function for one to 17 years. METHODS This retrospective study evaluated data collected from patients rehabilitated with implant overdentures between January 2001 and December 2016 in nine different centers. Outcome measures were implant and prosthetic success rates, mechanical complications, marginal bone loss (MBL), oral health impact profile (OHIP), bleeding on probing, and plaque index. RESULTS A total of 581 implants were installed in 194 patients. Patients were followed for a mean period of 60.6 months (range 6⁻206). Eighty-nine patients received 296 low profile attachment (OT Equator), 62 patients received 124 ball attachments, and 43 patients received 107 Locator attachments. In eighty-three patients the implants were splinted with computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) or casted bar. At the last follow-up, 10 implants failed in eight patients. Statistical significance was found for failed prostheses (P = 0.0723) and complications (P = 0.0165), with better values for splinted implants. No statistically significant differences were found in proportion of implant and prosthetic failure (P > 0.05). At a five-year follow-up, proportion of complications (P = 0.0289) and failed prostheses (P = 0.0069) were statistically higher for IOV on Locator attachments. No difference was founded in MBL at one- and two-year follow-up between different attachment systems (P > 0.05). Statistically significant improvement in all the OHIP categories was reported in all the patients, after one year of function. CONCLUSIONS Implant overdenture showed high implant and prosthetic survival rates, low complications, high patient satisfaction, and good biological parameters in the long-term follow-up. Splinting the implants may reduce number of mechanical complications. Locator attachments showed higher number of complications. Further studies are needed to confirm these preliminary results.

Abstract
Poor dental status and chewing deficiencies have been associated with cognitive decline. Altered dietary habits and malnutrition have been suggested as linking mechanisms. The aim of the present review was thus to investigate if poor oral health, and in particular tooth loss and impaired masticatory function, may affect dietary selection and nutritional intake in older adults, and moreover, to assess if prosthodontic dental care may improve nutritional status. Extensive tooth loss may impair masticatory function. Several studies in older populations have shown that severe tooth loss and masticatory impairment are associated with limited consumption of various food types (especially fruits and vegetables), increased consumption of sugary and easy-to-chew foods, and lower dietary intake of fibre and vitamins. However, these findings are not consistently reported, due to methodological variation among studies, potential adverse causalities, and the multifactorial nature of food choices. On the other hand, a few interventional studies revealed that prosthetic rehabilitation of missing teeth, when accompanied by dietary counselling, may improve dietary habits and nutritional intake. Further research is required to improve current knowledge of these associations. Under the limitations of the current study, a functional dental arch of natural or artificial teeth is important for maintaining adequate chewing efficiency and ability, but this only partly contributes to food choices and nutritional status. The multifactorial nature of food choices necessitates the interprofessional collaboration of dental professionals, dietetics practitioners, and primary care providers to improve dietary habits and nutritional intake.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to evaluate the combined effects of a new complete denture fabrication and simple dietary advice (using unique pamphlets) by dentists on nutrient intake in edentulous elderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A randomized controlled trial was performed on edentulous elderly patients who were randomly allocated to either an intervention or a control group. The intervention group received a new complete denture and simple dietary advice, whereas the control group received a new complete denture and denture care advice. The outcomes of this trial (nutrient intakes) were calculated using a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ) and assessed at three time points (pretreatment and 3 and 6 months post-treatment). RESULTS At 3 months post-treatment, the intake of several nutrients such as proteins (p = 0.004), magnesium (p < 0.001), and vitamin B1 (p = 0.014) was significantly higher in the intervention group than the control group, whereas at 6 months post-treatment, plant protein (p = 0.028) intake was significantly higher in the intervention group than the control group. On the contrary, animal protein (p = 0.049) and vitamin B12 (p = 0.028) intakes were significantly higher in the control group. CONCLUSIONS New complete denture fabrication with simple dietary advice might improve nutrient intake in elderly edentulous patients; however, the effect is probably short term. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE New complete denture fabrication along with simple dietary advice by dentists might improve nutrient intake in edentulous elderly patients. Therefore, regular use of these interventions in the dental setting might have long-term effects on nutrient intake in elderly edentulous patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty likely results in impaired functioning, and frail individuals requiring long-term care have recently attracted the attention of researchers. In the oral health field, the number of elderly individuals who require intervention for retaining occlusion has been increasing, as has the number of remaining teeth and required prosthetic treatment. Additionally, the number of elderly with reduced masticatory function has also been increasing, and frailty is a suspected factor. AIMS The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between frailty and masticatory function decline. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. METHODS A total of 747 participants (total mean age 73.6 ± 5.8 years old) underwent a comprehensive examination at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology. Three masticatory functions were evaluated: maximum occlusal force, mixing ability, and self-reported chewing ability. Frailty was determined using all 25 questions of the Basic checklist developed by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, following the method reported by Satake et al. RESULTS: Binomial logistic analysis clarified the relationship between frailty and evaluation of each of the three masticatory functions. Significant correlations of pre-frailty or frailty with maximum occlusal force, mixing ability, and subjective chewing ability were observed. CONCLUSION All three masticatory functions (maximum occlusal force, mixing ability, and self-reported chewing ability) were associated with pre-frailty or frailty in community-dwelling Japanese elderly.

Abstract
Despite progress in dentistry, tooth loss in old age is still a reality, even more so in long-term-care residents. However, recent trends indicate that natural teeth are lost later in life. Functional decline and age-related pathologies have to be considered in oral health care for this vulnerable population. Retaining and restoring teeth and oral function in elders is important. Tooth loss significantly impairs masticatory performance, which cannot be fully restored by prosthodontic means. Hence an unconscious change in food intake occurs, often involving malnutrition and withdrawal from common meals. Poor oral appearance and bad breath may further impede social activities. Although a chewing activity may be beneficial for cognitive function, natural teeth can present a considerable risk for fragile elders, in whom aspiration of biofilm can lead to pneumonia and death. The presence of natural teeth is also correlated with higher life expectancy, but socio-economic confounding factors have to be considered. When evaluating oral health in the elderly population, standards and priorities for reporting oral health outcome measures have to be defined. Anatomical indicators such as the number of natural teeth or the presence of prostheses might be one option for reporting. However, functional indicators such as masticatory performance and patient-centred outcome measures may be more relevant. In conclusion, there is an overwhelming body of evidence that maintaining a healthy natural dentition in old age is beneficial from a structural, functional and psycho-social point of view.

Abstract
There is a perceived gap between dietary advice given by health practitioners and adherence to the advice by patients. We investigated whether a behaviour change technique (implementation-planning) was more effective than standard-of-care diet advice at reducing dietary acid intake using quantitative erosive tooth wear progression as an objective clinical outcome. This study was a randomised controlled, double-blind, single-centre clinical trial in the UK. Participants (n = 60) with high dietary acid intake (≥2 daily), were recruited and randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either implementation-planning or standard-of-care diet advice in a single clinical session. Questionnaires and impressions were taken at baseline and 6 months later. Dental casts were scanned using laser profilometry and superimposed using surface-matching software. Data were analysed per protocol and intention-to-treat using independent t-tests and Mann-Whitney tests. The intervention group reduced their dietary acid intake between meals to 1 intake per day compared to 2 intakes per day for the controls and demonstrated reduced dental hard tissue volume loss (-0.00 mm3 (SD = 0.01)) compared to controls (-0.07 mm3 (SD 0.17)), p = 0.049. This paper supports the use of implementation planning in clinical practice and presents a non-invasive method of intervention assessment in behaviour change. Larger trials are needed to confirm the generalisability of results.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar o estado nutricional de indivíduos idosos submetidos a procedimentos de reabilitação oral cirúrgico-protético. Métodos: foram avaliados 15 pacientes completamente edêntulos com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos (10 mulheres e 5 homens). Todos os indivíduos usaram prótese removível em ambos os arcos e tiveram suas próteses mandibulares substituídas por próteses com implante, foram submetidas à avaliação nutricional, compreendendo aspectos antropométricos, análise bioquímica do sangue e avaliação dietética antes da cirurgia e três e seis meses após a cirurgia. Resultados: a análise estatística da avaliação antropométrica não revelou diferença significativa entre os períodos de estudo, para todos os parâmetros investigados. A avaliação bioquímica revelou um aumento significativo da albumina três meses após o tratamento odontológico, voltando a níveis inferiores após seis meses. A avaliação dietética evidenciou que a ingestão calórica, macronutrientes proteínas e carboidratos não foram alterados após o tratamento odontológico. Por outro lado, a ingestão de lipídios foi menor seis meses após o tratamento odontológico em comparação com os resultados anteriores. Conclusão: portanto, a colocação de próteses dentárias completas implantadas nos idosos investigados neste estudo não modificou a condição nutricional no curto prazo, sugere que os sujeitos mantiveram as características alimentares anteriores.

Abstract
Background Individuals who are edentulous have a lower intake of fruit, vegetables, fiber, and protein compared with their dentate counterparts because tooth loss is accompanied by a decrease in ability to chew. Whether or not a combination of prosthetic rehabilitation and simple dietary advice produces improvement in dietary intake among edentulous persons is unclear. We aim to investigate the effect of a simultaneous combination of simple dietary advice delivered by dentists and provision of new complete dentures on dietary intake in edentulous individuals who request new dentures. Methods/design Through a double-blinded, parallel, randomized controlled trial in which 70 edentate persons who request new complete dentures will be enrolled, eligible study participants will be randomly allocated to either a dietary intervention group receiving dietary advice or to a control group receiving only advice on the care and maintenance of dentures. Outcome measures include daily intake of nutrients and food items, assessed using a brief self-administered diet history questionnaire; antioxidant capacity, determined using blood and urine samples; nutritional status, assessed with the Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form; oral health-related quality of life, assessed with the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-EDENT and the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index; subjective chewing ability; masticatory performance, assessed using a color-changeable chewing gum and a gummy jelly; patient self-assessment of dentures; mild cognitive impairment, assessed with the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment; and functional capacity, assessed with the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence. Outcome measures, except for antioxidant capacity, are to be implemented at three time points: at baseline and at 3 and 6 months following intervention. Antioxidant capacity data are to be collected twice: at baseline and at 3 months following intervention. Differences between the groups at 3 and 6 months and within-group changes are to be compared using the paired t test. Discussion Simple dietary advice that can be implemented by a dentist would be more practical in clinical practice than tailored dietary counseling. The results of this study will provide beneficial information on dietary intake changes for both edentulous individuals requesting new complete dentures and dentists. Abstract
BACKGROUND The consumption of fruit and vegetables in old ages is particularly important, so that the appropriate consumption amount leads to reduction in the risk of chronic diseases. To increase consumption of fruit and vegetables and modify consumption pattern in the elderlies, training programs and appropriate intervention can be designed and implemented. AIMS The study was done to assess and compare nutritional intervention-based training methods and education using theories and health education models for the consumption of fruits and vegetables in the elderlies. METHODS Electronic search using keywords of Country Review Information Bank (Magiran), Scientific Information Database, Pub Med, Science direct, Science, Biomed central from the beginning of March 2014 to end of April 2015 was performed. RESULTS Ten interventional studies were assessed in this systematic study. The interventions were divided into two groups of studies, a total of five studies, theories and health education models were the basis of training intervention and the other five studies that include their interventions without the use of theories and health education models was carried out. Of ten interventional studies, three studies as before and after and seven studies as the intervention and control was performed. DISCUSSION The results showed that education-based theory and health education models have a greater impact on the consumption of fruit and vegetables in the elderlies. CONCLUSIONS The duration and interventions performing method, environmental factors and educational programs using appropriate models and theories are important on the effectiveness of interventions to increase consumption of fruit and vegetables in the elderliness.

Abstract
AIM To systematically assess the efficacy of oral health behaviour change counselling for tobacco use cessation (TUC) and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. MATERIALS AND METHODS Systematic Reviews, Randomized (RCTs), and Controlled Clinical Trials (CCTs) were identified through an electronic search of four databases complemented by manual search. Identification, screening, eligibility and inclusion of studies were performed independently by two reviewers. Quality assessment of the included publications was performed according to the AMSTAR tool for the assessment of the methodological quality of systematic reviews. RESULTS A total of seven systematic reviews were included. With the exception of inadequate oral hygiene, the following unhealthy lifestyles related with periodontal diseases were investigated: tobacco use, unhealthy diets, harmful use of alcohol, physical inactivity, and stress. Brief interventions for TUC were shown to be effective when applied in the dental practice setting while evidence for dietary counselling and the promotion of other healthy lifestyles was limited or non-existent. CONCLUSIONS While aiming to improve periodontal treatment outcomes and the maintenance of periodontal health current evidence suggests that tobacco use brief interventions conducted in the dental practice setting were effective thus underlining the rational for behavioural support.

Abstract
Eating is an essential activity to get energy and necessary nutrients for living. While chewing, the food is broken down by the teeth and dissolved by saliva. Taste, flavour and texture are perceived during chewing and will contribute to the appreciation of the food. The senses of taste and smell play an important role in selecting nutritive food instead of toxic substances. Also visual information of a food product is essential in the choice and the acceptance of food products, whereas auditory information obtained during the chewing of crispy products will provide information on whether a product is fresh or stale. Food perception does not just depend on one individual sense, but appears to be the result from multisensory integration of unimodal signals. Large differences in oral physiology parameters exist among individuals, which may lead to differences in food perception. Knowledge of the interplay between mastication and sensory experience for groups of individuals is important for the food industry to control quality and acceptability of their products. Environment factors during eating, like TV watching or electronic media use, may also play a role in food perception and the amount of food ingested. Distraction during eating a meal may lead to disregard about satiety and fullness feelings and thus to an increased risk of obesity. Genetic and social/cultural aspects seem to play an important role in taste sensitivity and food preference. Males generally show larger bite size, larger chewing power and a faster chewing rhythm than females. The size of swallowed particles seems to be larger for obese individuals, although there is no evidence until now of an 'obese chewing style'. Elderly people tend to have fewer teeth and consequently a less good masticatory performance, which may lead to lower intakes of raw food and dietary fibre. The influence of impaired mastication on food selection is still controversial, but it is likely that it may at least cause adaptation in food choice. Systemic conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer, with or without medicine use, tend to be associated with taste and chewing alterations. However, definite conclusions seem hard to reach, as research protocols vary largely.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the impact of implant-prosthetic rehabilitation combined with nutritional counseling on the nutritional status of patients with severely reduced dentitions. Design An explorative intervention study including an intra-individual comparison of 20 patients with severely reduced dentitions in terms of nutrition- and quality of life-related parameters recorded at baseline and at six and twelve months after implant-prosthetic rehabilitation. Participants Twenty patients from the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry of Justus-Liebig University of Giessen, with an mean age of 63 years, who had fewer than ten pairs of antagonists. Measurements The baseline data collection included dental status, a chewing ability test, laboratory parameters, anthropometric data (body mass index), energy supply, a 3-day dietary record, an analysis of the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) with the OHIP-G14, the Mini-Mental Status (MMS) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). Six months after implantation and prosthetic rehabilitation, individual nutritional counseling was performed by a dietician. Data were again collected and analyzed. A final follow-up was conducted 12 months after prosthetic rehabilitation. Results Despite the highly significant improvement in masticatory ability and OHRQoL after implant-prosthetic rehabilitation, no significant changes were observed regarding MNA, anthropometric data or energy supply. Except for cholinesterase (p = 0.012), ferritin (p = 0.003), folic acid (p = 0.019) and vitamin A (p = 0.004), no laboratory parameter changed significantly during the investigation period. In addition, no general significant differences were observed for nutrient intake or food choice. Conclusion The present study does not confirm the assumption that the implant-prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with severely reduced residual dentitions with or without an individual nutritional counseling influences nutritional status.
