Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to explore the association between tea-drinking habits and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Chinese adults and the mediating effect of sleep quality in this association. METHODS Data were derived from the 2020 Survey of Social Factors for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control among adults in Lishui District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. Tea-drinking habits were measured by participants' self-report. The HRQoL was measured using the 12-item Short Form Health Survey. Multiple linear regression modelling and mediating effects modelling were used for analyses. RESULTS Habitual tea drinking, frequent tea drinking (drinking tea 6-7 days per week), tea concentration and <10 g of tea per day were strongly associated with an increase in HRQoL among Chinese adults (all p<0.05). The association between tea-drinking habits and HRQoL among Chinese adults was more pronounced in the male population and in those ≥45 y of age (all p<0.05). Tea drinking habits may improve HRQoL in Chinese adults by enhancing sleep quality (all p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Maintaining the habit of habitual tea drinking (6-7 days per week), in small amounts (<10 g tea per day) was conducive to improving HRQoL of Chinese adults by improving sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tea (Camellia sinensis) has a rich history and is widely consumed across many countries, and is categorized into green tea, white tea, oolong tea, yellow tea, black tea, and dark tea based on the level of fermentation. Based on a review of previous literature, the commonly recognized bioactive substances in tea include tea polyphenols, amino acids, polysaccharides, alkaloids, terpenoids, macro minerals, trace elements, and vitamins, which have been known to have various potential health benefits, such as anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetes, and anti-obesity properties, cardiovascular protection, immune regulation, and control of the intestinal microbiota. Most studies have only pointed out the characteristics of tea's bioactivities, so a comprehensive summary of the pharmacological characteristics and mechanisms of tea's bioactivities and their use risks are vital. AIM OF REVIEW This paper aims to summarize tea's bioactive substances of tea and their pharmacological characteristics and mechanisms, providing a scientific basis for the application of bioactive substances in tea and outlining future research directions for the study of bioactive substances in tea. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW This review summarizes the main biologically active substances, pharmacological effects, and mechanisms and discusses the potential risks. It may help researchers grasp more comprehensive progress in the study of tea bioactive substances to further promote the application of tea as a natural bioactive substance in the medical field.

Abstract
The study aimed to comprehensively assess the separate and combined effects of physical activity (PA) and tea consumption on all-cause mortality and cancer-specific mortality among 21,350 participants from The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2009 and 2018. PA and tea consumption were evaluated through self-reported questionnaires and dietary recall interviews at baseline, with mortality data from the National Death Index. Cox regression analyses yielded hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results indicated that both tea consumption and PA independently reduced all-cause mortality. In the physically active group, tea consumption further decreased mortality risk, while this effect was not significant in the inactive group. Jointly, the highest tea consumers who exercised the most exhibited the lowest mortality risk compared to non-tea drinkers who exercised the least. Tea consumption alone does not significantly impact cancer-specific mortality; it is only in physically active group that tea consumption significantly lowers the risk of cancer-specific mortality. These findings underscore the potential benefits of regular tea consumption and PA in promoting longevity and reducing premature death risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to explore the association of socioeconomic status (SES) and life's essential 8 (LE8) with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality in north China. METHODS A total of 91,365 adults from the Kailuan study were included in this study. Comprehensive individual SES, mainly including monthly household income, education, Occupation position, and community environment, was confirmed by latent class analysis. Furthermore, the mediation and combination effects of SES and LE8 on CVD and all-cause mortality were further assessed. The Cox regression model was conducted to estimate HRs and 95% CI. RESULTS During about 13 years of follow-up, 7,646 cardiovascular events and 11,749 deaths were recorded. Relative to the high SES, there were decreased risks of CVD [HR (95% CI): 1.57(1.43-1.72)] and high all-cause death [HR (95% CI): 1.43(1.31-1.53)] in the low SES. The associations between SES and CVD [Mediation % (95% CI): 22.3 (16.4-30.4)] and mortality [Mediation % (95% CI): 10.1 (7.1-14.0)] were partially mediated by LE8 when comparing medium SES to high SES. Meanwhile, relative to high LE8, the elevated risk of death [HR (95% CI): 1.72(1.56-1.89)], and incident CVD [HR (95% CI): 3.34(2.91-3.83)] were detected in low LE8. Compared to participants who had the high SES and LE8, participants who had both the low SES and LE8 further increased the risk of CVD [HR (95% CI): 7.76(5.21-11.55)] and all-cause mortality [HR (95% CI): 2.80(2.19-3.58)]. CONCLUSION Low SES was related to a higher risk of CVD and mortality in low- and middle-income countries, which was partially mediated by LE8.

Abstract
Previous research shows that more than 70% of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are attributed to modifiable risk factors. Here, we investigated relationship between consumption of green tea in European and East Asian populations and risk of CVDs using Mendelian randomization (MR). Instrumental variables for green tea intake were obtained from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of 64,949 Europeans and 152,653 East Asians. GWASs for CVDs were derived from UK BioBank and BioBank Japan projects. The main method selected for MR analysis was either the inverse variance weighted (IVW) or Wald ratio, depending on the quantity of single nucleotide polymorphisms. Furthermore, we performed sensitivity analyses to confirm the reliability of the findings. Based on the results of IVW, there is no causal relationship between consumption of green tea and risk of 4 CVDs among Europeans (atrial fibrillation: OR = 1.000, 95% CI: 0.995-1.005, P = .910; heart failure: OR = 1.003, 95% CI: 0.994-1.012, P = .542; ischemic stroke: OR = 1.002, 95% CI: 0.993-1.011, P = .690; coronary artery disease: OR = 1.001, 95% CI: 0.996-1.007, P = .677). Sensitivity analyses and supplementary MR analyses also verify the robustness of the findings. Likewise, there was no correlation between the consumption of green tea and the occurrence of CVDs in East Asians. The consumption of green tea is not associated with a reduced risk of CVDs in populations from Europe and East Asia. This means that those who are trying to reduce their risk of CVDs by drinking more green tea may not benefit from doing so.

Abstract
Objective There is limited research on the relationship between the frequency of plant-based food intake and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among elderly Chinese. This study aims to evaluate the association between plant-based dietary index (PDI) and CVD risks, providing evidence for elderly Chinese to reduce CVD risks by increasing the frequency of plant-based food consumption. Methods This study analyzed data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) 2011-2018, employing a multivariate modified Poisson regression model, trend tests, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis to assess the linear and non-linear relationship between the PDI and CVD risks. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted to evaluate the robustness and population-specificity of the results. Results This study included a total of 1,414 elderly Chinese, and at the end of follow-up, 487 participants had developed CVD. The multivariate modified Poisson regression model revealed a negative association between PDI and CVD risks [RR = 0.983, 95%CI = (0.970, 0.997)]. Similarly, the multivariate trend test (p = 0.031) and RCS analysis (P for nonlinear = 0.600) indicated a linear relationship between PDI and CVD risks. Subgroup analyses showed that the relationship between PDI and CVD risk was not influenced by gender, BMI, smoking, alcohol use, or exercise. Conclusion The PDI was negatively correlated with CVD risks, indicating that increasing the frequency of plant-based food intake in the diet may reduce CVD risks among elderly Chinese.

Abstract
People often rely on scientific findings to help them make decisions-however, failing to report effect magnitudes might lead to a potential bias in assuming findings are practically significant. Across two online studies (Prolific; N = 800), we measured U.S. adults' endorsements of expensive interventions described in media reports that led to effects that were small, large, or of unreported magnitude between groups. Participants who viewed interventions with unreported effect magnitudes were more likely to endorse interventions compared with those who viewed interventions with small effects and were just as likely to endorse interventions as those who viewed interventions with large effects, suggesting a practical significance bias. When effect magnitudes were reported, participants on average adjusted their evaluations accordingly. However, some individuals, such as those with low numeracy skills, were more likely than others to act on small effects, even when explicitly prompted to first consider the meaningfulness of the effect.

Abstract
The relationship between beverage consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease has been extensively examined in cross-sectional studies. However, limited studies have investigated beverage consumption as a longer-term habitual behavior, which is important owing to potential cumulative harmful or beneficial cardiovascular effects. We examined the association between the long-term consumption of 6 types of beverages (sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened beverages, tea, coffee, fruit juice, energy drinks, and alcohol) and cardiovascular mortality, by considering sex differences. We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from 2010 to December 2023. Of 8049 studies identified, 20 studies were included for meta-analysis. Summary hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated with the use of a random-effects model. We found that long-term coffee consumption was related to reduced cardiovascular disease-related mortality in males (pooled HR: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.87; P = 0.005) but not in females (HR: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.60, 1.02; P = 0.07). Long-term higher intake of tea was associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related mortality in all adults (pooled HR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.72, 0.92; P ≤ 0.001). Higher alcohol intake was linked to higher stroke in both males (pooled HR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.94; P = 0.02) and females (pooled HR: 2.26; 95% CI: 1.34, 3.81; P = 0.002). Higher sugar-sweetened beverage intake was in relation to higher cardiovascular disease-related mortality (pooled HR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.16, 1.46; P ≤ 0.0001). We concluded that long-term habitual coffee consumption is beneficial for males, and tea consumption is beneficial for all adults. Long-term high alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption increased risk of cardiovascular disease-related mortality for both males and females. However, we were unable to draw conclusions on the potential benefit or harm of the long-term consumption of fruit juice and energy drinks on cardiovascular disease-related mortality owing to the limited number of studies available. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The quantification of cardiovascular health (CVH) was updated by the American Heart Association recently by using the "Life's Essential 8" (LE8) score. We aimed to investigate the associations of baseline and longitudinal CVH status measured by the new LE8 score (except for blood pressure) with the risk of hypertension. METHODS A total of 52 990 participants with complete data on LE8 metrics and without hypertension were enrolled from the Kailuan study, Tangshan, China. The associations of incident hypertension with the overall baseline, time-updated, and time-varying CVH score (ranging 0 [lowest] to 100 [highest]), and each component of LE8, were assessed by Cox regressions. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 10.73 years 28 380 cases of incident hypertension were identified. The risk of hypertension attenuated with increased CVH score (Ptrend < 0.0001), the hazard ratios (HRs) in high CVH versus low CVH group was 0.54 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.51-0.57) for baseline CVH, 0.47 (95% CI, 0.45-0.50) for time-updated CVH, and 0.59 (95% CI, 0.55-0.63) for time-varying CVH. The predictive value of CVH in predicting hypertension improved by using LE8 than using Life's Simple 7 metrics. Among LE8 components, body mass index score was the strongest risk factor for hypertension. Subgroup analyses showed that the benefit of a higher CVH score on hypertension was more prominent in young adults and in women (Pinteraction < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS A higher CVH score assessed by new LE8 is associated with a lower risk of subsequent hypertension, especially young adults and women.

Abstract
Tea is an important cash crop worldwide, and its nutritional value has led to its high economic benefits. Tea anthracnose is a common disease of tea plants that seriously affects food safety and yield and has a far-reaching impact on the sustainable development of the tea industry. In this study, phenotypic analysis and pathogenicity analysis were performed on knockout and complement strains of HTF2-the transcriptional regulator of tea anthracnose homeobox-and the pathogenic mechanism of these strains was explored via RNA-seq. The MoHox1 gene sequence of the rice blast fungus was indexed, and the anthracnose genome was searched for CfHTF2. Evolutionary analysis recently reported the affinity of HTF2 for C. fructicola and C. higginsianum. The loss of CfHTF2 slowed the vegetative growth and spore-producing capacity of C. fructicola and weakened its resistance and pathogenesis to adverse conditions. The transcriptome sequencing of wild-type N425 and CfHTF2 deletion mutants was performed, and a total of 3144 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained, 1594 of which were upregulated and 1550 of which were downregulated. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of DEGs mainly focused on signaling pathways such as the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. In conclusion, this study lays a foundation for further study of the pathogenic mechanism of tea anthracnose and provides a molecular basis for the analysis of the pathogenic molecular mechanism of CfHTF2.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent a major global health concern, responsible for significant morbidity, mortality, and disability. To mitigate the impact of CVDs, individuals often seek preventive measures, and one such approach is the consumption of green tea. This study aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the effects of green tea consumption on the prevalence of cardiovascular outcomes. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review using PubMed and Google Scholar databases to identify relevant studies. Our analysis revealed that the risk factors associated with CVDs can vary across different diseases, with hypertension being a common risk factor for CVD mortality and CVD. Notably, the consumption of green tea exhibited a positive effect on reducing the prevalence of cardiometabolic risks and hypercholesterolemia. Furthermore, green tea consumption was observed to have a beneficial impact on lowering both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. In conclusion, the studies reviewed in this research suggest that the consumption of green tea has a significant and positive influence on cardiovascular health. These findings highlight the potential of green tea as a valuable component of a healthy lifestyle, offering a promising avenue for its use as a dietary supplement to reduce the risk of CVDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between tea and coffee consumption and mortality among patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains barely explored. Herein, this study aimed to examine the association between tea and coffee consumption and the likelihood of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in patients with MetS. METHODS A total of 118,872 participants with MetS at baseline from the UK Biobank cohort were included. Information on tea and coffee consumption was obtained during recruitment using a touchscreen questionnaire. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality were determined using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 13.87 years, 13,666 deaths were recorded, with 5913, 3362, and 994 deaths from cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and respiratory disease (RD), respectively. This research showed a significant inverse association between tea intake and the risk of all-cause and cancer mortality, the respective HRs (95% CI) for consuming tea 2 vs. 0 cup/day were 0.89 (0.84-0.95), and 0.91 (0.83-0.99), and tea intake ≥ 4 cups/day could reduce CVD mortality by 11% (HR 0.89; 95% CI 0.81-0.98). The U-shaped nonlinear association between coffee intake and all-cause/CVD mortality was examined (all p-nonlinear < 0.001). The HRs (95% CI) for coffee consumption 1 vs. 0 cup/day were 0.93 (0.89-0.98) and 0.89 (0.80-0.99), and for ≥ 4 vs. 0 cup/day were 1.05 (1.01-1.11) and 1.13 (1.03-1.25), respectively. Notably, the combined intake of tea and coffee presented a protective effect against all-cause mortality (HR < 1). CONCLUSIONS The importance of daily tea and moderate coffee consumption in individuals with MetS to optimise health benefits are highlighted.

Abstract
Catechins in green tea extract (GTE) (epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG)) vary in bioactivity. We developed a physiologically relevant mathematical model of catechin metabolism to test the hypothesis that fractional catabolic rates of catechins would be differentially affected by their structural attributes. Pharmacokinetic data of plasma and urine catechin concentrations were used from healthy adults (n = 19) who ingested confections containing 0.5 g GTE (290 mg EGCG, 87 mg EGC, 39 mg EC, 28 mg ECG). A 7-compartmental model of catechin metabolism comprised of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small and large intestine), liver, plasma, extravascular tissues, and kidneys was developed using a mean fraction dose of EGCG, ECG, EGC, and EC. Fitting was by iterative least squares regression analysis, and goodness of fit was ascertained by the estimated variability of parameters (FSD < 0.5). The interaction of gallation and B-ring dihydroxylation most greatly extended plasma residence time such that EGC > EC = EGCG > EGC. The interaction between gallation and B-ring dihydroxylation accelerated the transfer from the upper gastrointestinal tract to the small intestine but delayed subsequent transfers from the small intestine through the liver to plasma and from kidneys to urine. Gallation and B-ring dihydroxylation independently delayed the transfer from plasma to extravascular tissues, except the uptake to kidneys, which was slowed by gallation only. This multi-compartment model, to be validated in a future study, suggests that gallation and B-ring dihydroxylation affect catechin catabolism in a tissue-specific manner and thus their potential bioactivity.

Abstract
Background Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a common diabetic complication and increases the complexity of diabetes management. No prospective study has focused on the association between DKD and Life's Essential 8 (LE8). Our study aims to examine the association between LE8 and DKD risk. Methods and Results A total of 7605 participants, aged 54.32±9.77 years, and 4688 participants, aged 56.11±10.38 years, were included in the longitudinal and trajectory analyses, respectively, from 2006 to 2020. The DKD was confirmed using data collected during each follow-up. LE8 was based on 4 health behaviors and 4 health factors. The range of each metric was 0 to 100, and the overall LE8 score was calculated as the unweighted average of all 8 component metric scores. The trajectories of LE8 during 2006 to 2010 were classified using latent mixture models. Cox models and restricted cubic splines were applied. After a median follow-up of 12.41 and 6.71 years in longitudinal and trajectory analyses, respectively, the DKD incidence decreased, with the LE8 level increasing (P-trend<0.05), and the linearity assumption for this relationship (P-nonlinear=0.685) had been satisfied. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for the highest tertile were 0.77 (95% CI, 0.69-0.87) and 0.70 (95% CI, 0.62-0.78) in baseline and time-updated LE8 scores, respectively, compared with the lowest tertile. Adjusted HR was 0.53 (95% CI, 0.41-0.69) for the stable-high pattern compared with the stable-low pattern. Conclusions Although LE8 is an indicator of cardiovascular health, the beneficial impact of a high LE8 score is also evident in the protection of renal health among patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to examine the association between the baseline Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score and LE8 score trajectories with the continuous carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) as well as the risk of high cIMT. Methods The Kailuan study has been an ongoing prospective cohort study since 2006. A total of 12,980 participants who completed the first physical examination and cIMT detection at follow-up without a history of CVD and missing data on the component of LE8 metrics in or before 2006 were finally included in the analysis. The LE8 score trajectories were developed from 2006 to 2010 using trajectory modeling of the SAS procedure Proc Traj. The measurement and result review of the cIMT were performed by specialized sonographers using standardized methods. According to quintiles of baseline LE8 score, participants were categorized into five groups: Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, and Q5. Similarly, based on their LE8 score trajectories, they were classified into four groups: very low-stable group, low-stable group, median-stable group, and high-stable group. In addition to continuous cIMT measurement, we determined the high cIMT based on the age (by 5 years) and sex-specific 90th percentile cut point. To address aims 1 and 2, the association between baseline/trajectory groups and continuous cIMT/high cIMT was assessed by using SAS proc genmod to calculate β, relative risk (RR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results A total of 12,980 participants were finally included in aim 1, and 8,758 participants met aim 2 of the association between LE8 trajectories and cIMT/high cIMT. Compared with the Q1 group, the continuous cIMT for Q2, Q3, Q4, and Q5 groups were thinner; the other groups had a lower risk of high cIMT. For aim 2, the results indicated that compared with a very low-stable group, the cIMT for the low-stable group, the median-stable group, and the high-stable group were thinner (-0.07 mm [95% CI -0.10~0.04 mm], -0.10 mm [95% CI -0.13~-0.07 mm], -0.12 mm [95% CI -0.16~-0.09 mm]) and had a lower risk of high cIMT. The RR (95% CI) for high cIMT was 0.84 (0.75~0.93) in the low-stable group, 0.63 (0.57~0.70) in the median-stable group, 0.52 (0.45~0.59) in the high-stable group. Conclusions In summary, our study revealed that high baseline LE8 scores and LE8 score trajectories were associated with lower continuous cIMT and attenuated risk of high cIMT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Conflicting evidence exists regarding the association between green tea consumption and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). We performed a meta-analysis to determine whether an association exists between them in cohort studies. METHODS AND RESULTS We searched the PubMed and EMBASE databases for studies conducted until September 2022. Prospective cohort studies that provided relative risk (RR) estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association were included. Study-specific risk estimates were combined using a random-effects model. A total of seven studies, with 9211 CHD cases among 772,922 participants, were included. We observed a nonlinear association between green tea consumption and the risk of CHD (P for nonlinearity = 0.0009). Compared with nonconsumers, the RRs (95% CI) of CHD across levels of green tea consumption were 0.89 (0.83, 0.96) for 1 cup/day (1 cup = 300 ml), 0.84 (0.77, 0.93) for 2 cups/day, 0.85 (0.77, 0.92) for 3 cups/day, 0.88 (0.81, 0.96) for 4 cups/day, and 0.92 (0.82, 1.04) for 5 cups/day. CONCLUSIONS This updated meta-analysis of studies from East Asia suggests that green tea consumption may be associated with a reduced risk of CHD, especially among those with low-to-moderate consumption. Abstract
Tea has long been valued for its health benefits, especially its potential to prevent and treat atherosclerosis (AS). Abnormal lipid metabolism and oxidative stress are major factors that contribute to the development of AS. Tea, which originated in China, is believed to help prevent AS. Research has shown that tea is rich in catechins, which is considered a potential source of natural antioxidants. Catechins are the most abundant antioxidants in green tea, and are considered to be the main compound responsible for tea's antioxidant activity. The antioxidant properties of catechins are largely dependent on the structure of molecules, and the number and location of hydroxyl groups or their substituents. As an exogenous antioxidant, catechins can effectively eliminate lipid peroxidation products. They can also play an antioxidant role indirectly by activating the endogenous antioxidant system by regulating enzyme activity and signaling pathways. In this review, we summarized the preventive effect of catechin in AS, and emphasized that improving the antioxidant effect and lipid metabolism disorders of catechins is the key to managing AS.

Abstract
Background: Previous studies have reported inconsistent results on the causal association between habitual tea consumption and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study is aim to determine the association between habitual tea intake and CVD using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods: The genetically predicted causation between tea consumption and 7 common cardiovascular diseases (atrial fibrillation, hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, coronary atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease, angina, and heart failure) was evaluated using MR analysis model. We performed a total of 9 MR analysis methods to analyze the final results. The IVW methods was used as the primary outcome. The other MR analysis method (simple mode, weighted mode, simple median, weighted median, penalized weighted median, MR Egger, and MR-Egger (bootstrap)) were performed as the complement to IVW. Also, the robustness of the MR analysis results was assessed using a leave-one-out analysis. Results: The IVW analysis methods indicated that there is no causal association between tea consumption and risk of CVD (AF: OR, 0.997, 95% CI, 0.992-1.0001, p = 0.142; hypertension: OR, 0.976, 95% CI, 0.937-1.017, p = 0.242; AMI: OR, 0.996, 95% CI, 0.991-1.000, p = 0.077; CA: OR, 1.001, 95% CI, 0.993-1.009, p = 0.854; PVD: OR, 1.002, 95% CI, 1.000-1.005, p = 0.096; angina: OR, 0.999, 95% CI, 0.993-1.006, p = 0.818; HF: OR, 0.999, 95% CI, 0.996-1.002, p = 0.338). The other MR analysis method and further leave-one-out sensitivity analysis suggested the results were robust. Conclusion: This MR study indicated that there was no genetically predicted causal association between habitual tea intake and risk of CVD.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between fruit intake and stroke risk considering the genetic predisposition. We used data from 34,871 participants from the project of Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR project) from 2007 to 2020. A polygenic risk score comprising 534 genetic variants associated with stroke and its related factors was constructed to categorize individuals into low, intermediate, and high genetic risk groups. The associations of genetic and fruit intake with incident stroke were assessed by the Cox proportional hazard regression. We documented 2586 incident strokes during a median follow-up of 11.2 years. Compared with fruit intake < 200 g/week, similar relative risk reductions in stroke with adherence to fruit intake > 100 g/day across the genetic risk categories were observed (28−32%), but the absolute risk reductions were relatively larger in the highest genetic risk group (p for trend = 0.03). In comparison to those with a fruit intake < 200 g/week, those with a fruit intake >100 g/day in the low, intermediate, and high genetic risk groups had an average of 1.45 (95% CI, 0.61−2.31), 2.12 (1.63−2.59), and 2.19 (1.13−3.22) additional stroke-free years at aged 35, respectively. Our findings suggest that individuals with a high genetic risk could gain more absolute risk reductions and stroke-free years than those with a low genetic risk from increasing fruit intake for the stroke primary prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies suggested that moderate coffee and tea consumption are associated with lower risk of mortality. However, the association between the combination of coffee and tea consumption with the risk of mortality remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the separate and combined associations of coffee and tea consumption with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. METHODS This prospective cohort study included 498,158 participants (37-73 years) from the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010. Coffee and tea consumption were assessed at baseline using a self-reported questionnaire. All-cause and cause-specific mortalities, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), respiratory disease, and digestive disease mortality, were obtained from the national death registries. Cox regression analyses were conducted to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS After a median follow-up of 12.1 years, 34,699 deaths were identified. The associations of coffee and tea consumption with all-cause and cause-specific mortality attributable to CVD, respiratory disease, and digestive disease were nonlinear (all P nonlinear < 0.001). The association between separate coffee consumption and the risk of all-cause mortality was J-shaped, whereas that of separate tea consumption was reverse J-shaped. Drinking one cup of coffee or three cups of tea per day seemed to link with the lowest risk of mortality. In joint analyses, compared to neither coffee nor tea consumption, the combination of < 1-2 cups/day of coffee and 2-4 cups/day of tea had lower mortality risks for all-cause (HR, 0.78; 95% CI: 0.73-0.85), CVD (HR, 0.76; 95% CI: 0.64-0.91), and respiratory disease (HR, 0.69; 95% CI: 0.57-0.83) mortality. Nevertheless, the lowest HR (95% CI) of drinking both < 1-2 cup/day of coffee and ≥ 5 cups/day of tea for digestive disease mortality was 0.42 (0.34-0.53). CONCLUSIONS In this large prospective study, separate and combined coffee and tea consumption were inversely associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

Abstract
Polyphenols and flavonoids from non-fermented green tea and fully-fermented black tea exhibit antioxidant abilities that function as natural health foods for daily consumption. Nonetheless, evidence regarding prophylactic effects of purple shoot tea on immunomodulation remains scarce. We compared the immunomodulatory effects of different tea processes on oxidative stress and cytokine expressions in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. Major constituents of four tea products, Taiwan Tea Experiment Station No.12 (TTES No. 12) black and green tea and purple shoot black and purple shoot green tea (TB, TG, PB and PG, respectively), were analyzed to explore the prophylactic effects on expressions of free radicals, nitric oxide (NO), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in LPS-activated RAW264.7 cell models. PG contained abundant levels of total polyphenols, flavonoids, condensed tannins and proanthocyanidins (371.28 ± 3.83; 86.37 ± 1.46; 234.67 ± 10.1; and 24.81 ± 0.75 mg/g, respectively) contributing to excellent free radical scavenging potency. In both the LPS-activated inflammation model and the prophylactic model, all tea extracts suppressed NO secretion in a dose-dependent manner, especially for PG. Intriguingly, most tea extracts enhanced expressions of IL-6 in LPS-stimulated macrophages, except PG. However, all teas disrupted downstream transduction of chemoattractant MCP-1 for immune cell trafficking. In the prophylactic model, all teas inhibited inflammatory responses by attenuating expressions of IL-6 and TNF-α in a dose-dependent manner, especially for TG and PG. Our prophylactic model demonstrated PG exerts robust effects on modulating LPS-induced cytokine expressions of MCP-1, IL-6 and TNF-α through scavenging free radicals and NO. In light of the prophylactic effects on LPS-related inflammation, PG effectively scavenges free radicals to modulate cytokine cascades that could serve as a functional beverage for immunomodulation.

Abstract
Background: Tea consumption is widely reported to have beneficial effects on metabolic functions. The current study is to evaluate the association between habitual tea consumption and risk for metabolic syndrome and its components among Chinese adults aged 18~59 years. Methods: 43,757 participants aged 18~59 years from China Nutrition and Health Surveillance 2015–2017 were included and divided into four groups based on the amount of daily tea consumption in the current study. Using multiple-adjustment logistic regression to explore the relationship between habitual tea consumption and metabolic syndrome-related health outcomes. Results: Compared with those who did not consume tea habitually, participants who drank over 5 cups of tea per day showed a significantly lower risk of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.836, 95% CI = 0.771–0.905), blood pressure elevated (OR = 0.906, 95% CI = 0.845–0.972), triglyceride elevated (OR = 0.797, 95% CI = 0.741–0.857), and fasting plasma glucose elevated (OR = 0.772, 95% CI = 0.715–0.833), but higher risk for central obesity (OR = 1.354, 95% CI = 1.236–1.484). Regardless of gender, higher tea consumption was related to lower risk of triglyceride and fasting blood glucose elevated but higher risk for central obesity. While for protective effect on metabolic syndrome, blood pressure elevated, and HDL-C reduction only showed in females. Conclusions: Results from current study support that habitual tea consumption would benefit metabolic syndrome and its related components, especially among females.

Abstract
Background Vast accumulative evidence suggests that the consumption of tea and its components have various potential health benefits. This study used a longitudinal study to examine the causality between tea consumption and frailty in older Chinese people. Methods This study employed the longitudinal data from 2008 to 2014 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), which were systematically collected through face-to-face interviews. Two thousand four hundred and seventy three participants completed six-follow-up surveys in 2014 and were analyzed in this study. The frailty index recommended by Searle and co-authors, including 44 health deficits, was used. A Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) was applied to determine the risk ratio (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) for frailty, and further subgroup analyses were conducted to investigate whether the risk differed stratified by age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Additionally, the interaction between tea consumption with sex and frailty was tested. Results Of the 2,473 participants, 14.1% were consistent daily tea drinkers, and 22.6% reported frailty at the 6-year follow-up. Compared to non-tea drinkers, consistent daily tea drinkers reported a significantly lower ratio of having frailty [risk ratio (RR) = 0.54, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.38-0.78], adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, health behavior, socioeconomic status, and chronic illnesses. In further subgroup analyses, consistent daily tea consumption significantly reduced the risk of frailty for males (RR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.32-0.87) but not females (RR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.37-1.12); in the young (RR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.22-0.74) but not in the oldest (aged ≥ 80) (RR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.40-1.06); informal education (RR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.28-0.84) but not formal education (RR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.37-1.03); financial dependence (RR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.25-0.71) but not financial independence (RR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.41-1.23). Additionally, females showed a lower tea-mediated risk of frailty in occasional tea consumers (RR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.29-0.89) and inconsistent tea drinkers (RR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.37-0.93). Conclusions Habitual tea consumption can reduce the risk of frailty in older Chinese, and the benefit varied by age, sex, education, and financial support.

Abstract
Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) is a nuclear enzyme involved in processes of cell cycle regulation, DNA repair, transcription, and replication. Hyperactivity of PARP-1 induced by changes in cell homeostasis promotes development of chronic pathological processes leading to cell death during various metabolic disorders, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. In contrast, tumor growth is accompanied by a moderate activation of PARP-1 that supports survival of tumor cells due to enhancement of DNA lesion repair and resistance to therapy by DNA damaging agents. That is why PARP inhibitors (PARPi) are promising agents for the therapy of tumor and metabolic diseases. A PARPi family is rapidly growing partly due to natural polyphenols discovered among plant secondary metabolites. This review describes mechanisms of PARP-1 participation in the development of various pathologies, analyzes multiple PARP-dependent pathways of cell degeneration and death, and discusses representative plant polyphenols, which can inhibit PARP-1 directly or suppress unwanted PARP-dependent cellular processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Association between tea consumption and incident hypertension remains uncertain. This study conducted to examine the health effects of tea consumption on blood pressure progression and hypertension incidence. METHODS A population-based cohort of 38,913 Chinese participants without hypertension at baseline were included in the current study. Information on tea consumption was collected through standardized questionnaires. Associations of tea consumption with blood pressure progression and incident hypertension were analyzed using logistic regression models and Cox proportional hazards regression models, respectively. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 5.9 years, 17,657 individuals had experienced progression to a higher blood pressure stage and 5,935 individuals had developed hypertension. In multivariate analyses, habitual tea drinkers (≥ 3 times/week for at least six months) had a 17% lower risk for blood pressure progression [odds ratio (OR) = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.79–0.88] and a 14% decreased risk for incident hypertension [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.80–0.91] compared with non-habitual tea drinkers. Individuals in different baseline blood pressure groups could obtain similar benefit from habitual tea drinking. In terms of tea consumption amount, an inverse, linear dose-response relation between monthly consumption of tea leaves and risk of blood pressure progression was observed, while the risk of incident hypertension did not reduce further after consuming around 100 g of tea leaves per month. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that habitual tea consumption could provide preventive effect against blood pressure progression and hypertension incidence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Active commuting as a contributor to daily physical activity is beneficial for cardiovascular health, but leads to more chances of exposure to ambient air pollution. This study aimed to investigate associations between active commuting to work with cardiovascular disease (CVD), mortality and life expectancy among general Chinese adults, and to further evaluate the modification effect of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure on these associations. METHODS We included 76,176 Chinese adults without CVD from three large cohorts of the Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China project. Information about commuting mode and physical activity were collected by unified questionnaire. Satellite-based PM2.5 concentrations at 1-km spatial resolution was used for estimating PM2.5 exposure of participants. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD incidence, mortality and all-cause mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Multiplicative interaction term of commuting mode and PM2.5 level was tested to investigate potential effect modification. RESULTS During 448,499 person-years of follow-up, 2230 CVD events and 2777 all-cause deaths were recorded. Compared with the non-active commuters, the multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of CVD incidence and all-cause mortality were 0.95(0.85-1.05) and 0.79(0.72-0.87) for walking commuters, respectively. Corresponding HRs (95% CIs) for cycling commuters were 0.71(0.62-0.82) and 0.67(0.59-0.76). Active commuters over 45 years old were estimated to have more CVD-free years and life expectancy than non-active commuters under lower PM2.5 concentration. However, these beneficial effects of active commuting were alleviated or counteracted by long-term exposure to high PM2.5 concentration. Significant multiplicative interaction of commuting mode and PM2.5 level was showed in all-cause mortality, with the lowest risk observed in cycling participants exposed to lower level of PM2.5. CONCLUSIONS Active commuting was associated with lower risk of CVD, all-cause mortality, and longer life expectancy among Chinese adults under ambient settings with lower PM2.5 level. It will be valuable to encourage active commuting among adults and develop stringent strategies on ambient PM2.5 pollution control for prevention of CVD and prolongation of life expectancy.

Abstract
Evidence about the response patterns of fruit and vegetable consumption with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality was inconsistent. These associations were examined using a large-scale, population-based Chinese cohort comprising 100,728 participants. A food-frequency questionnaire was used to assess fruit and vegetable consumption. Outcomes were ascertained by interviewing individuals or their proxies and checking hospital records or death certificates. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). At the 736,668 person-years of follow-up, 3,677 CVD cases and 5,466 deaths were identified. The multivariable-adjusted HRs for CVD across increasing quartiles of total fruit and vegetable consumption were 1 (reference), 0.94 (95%CI=0.85-1.04), 0.89 (95%CI=0.80-0.98), and 0.85 (95% CI=0.11-0.95). Moreover, participants in the highest quartile displayed a 13% lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR=0.81; 95% CI=0.80-0.95). A nonlinear dose-response relation was found for CVD, without additional benefits beyond a consumption of 600 g d-1, whereas the all-cause mortality risk decreased along with higher consumption, with a linear trend. These associations remained significant for fruit consumption but not for vegetable consumption. Our findings indicated that greater fruit and vegetable consumption was significantly associated with a lower risk of CVD and all cause mortality. Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, especially fruit, in the general population would prevent CVD and premature mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Epidemiological evidence on the relationship between eating behaviors, including breakfast skipping, late night dinner, and bedtime snacking, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) events among the general population is scarce. We sought to explore the association of eating behaviors with subsequent CVD using a nationwide epidemiological database. METHODS AND RESULTS Medical records of 1,941,125 individuals without prior history of CVD were extracted from the Japan Medical Data Center contracting with more than 60 insurers from multiple regions in Japan, mainly including employed working-age individuals. Skipping breakfast <3 times per week, late night dinner <3 times per week, and bedtime snacking <3 times per week were defined as optimal eating behaviors. Median age was 45 (interquartile range 39-53) years, and 1,138,676 were men. Median follow-up period was 978 (interquartile range 481-1790) days. Among them, 948,805 individuals (48.9%) had optimal eating behaviors, whereas 647,383 individuals (33.4%), 283,017 individuals (14.6%), and 61,920 individuals (3.2%) had single, double, and triple non-optimal eating behaviors, respectively. Individuals with non-optimal eating behaviors were younger and more likely to be men. Obesity and high waist circumference were more commonly observed in those with non-optimal eating behaviors. Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that, compared with no non-optimal eating behavior, having non-optimal eating behaviors would have higher risk of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, stroke, and heart failure. However, the dose-response relationship was not clear in the association between the number of non-optimal eating behaviors and incident CVD. Multivariable Cox regression analysis after multiple imputation for missing values also showed the association between non-optimal eating behaviors and incident CVD. CONCLUSIONS Using a nationwide epidemiological database, we found a possible relationship between eating behaviors including skipping breakfast, late night dinner, and bedtime snacking, and subsequent cardiovascular events among the general population, suggesting the potential importance of maintaining optimal eating behaviors for the primordial and primary CVD prevention in the general population.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is the most prevalent hepatic disorder worldwide, affecting 25% of the general population, describes a spectrum of progressive liver conditions ranging from relatively benign liver steatosis and advancing to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Hallmark features of NASH are fatty hepatocytes and inflammatory cell infiltrates in association with increased activation of hepatic nuclear factor kappa-B (NFκB) that exacerbates liver injury. Because no pharmacological treatments exist for NAFLD, emphasis has been placed on dietary approaches to manage NASH risk. Anti-inflammatory bioactivities of catechin-rich green tea extract (GTE) have been well-studied, especially in preclinical models that have detailed its effects on inflammatory responses downstream of NFκB activation. This review will therefore discuss the experimental evidence that has advanced an understanding of the mechanisms by which GTE, either directly through its catechins or potentially indirectly through microbiota-derived metabolites, limits NFκB activation and NASH-associated liver injury. Specifically, it will describe the hepatic-level benefits of GTE that attenuate intracellular redox distress and pro-inflammatory signaling from extracellular receptors that otherwise activate NFκB. In addition, it will discuss the anti-inflammatory activities of GTE on gut barrier function as well as prebiotic and antimicrobial effects on gut microbial ecology that help to limit the translocation of gut-derived endotoxins (e.g. lipopolysaccharides) to the liver where they otherwise upregulate NFκB activation by Toll-like receptor-4 signaling. This summary is therefore expected to advance research translation of the hepatic- and intestinal-level benefits of GTE and its catechins to help manage NAFLD-associated morbidity.

Abstract
The accumulation of cross-β-sheet amyloid fibrils is a hallmark of all human amyloid diseases. The compound epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main polyphenol present in green tea, has been described to have beneficial effects in several pathologies, including amyloidogenic diseases. This polyphenol blocks amyloidogenesis and disaggregates a broad range of amyloidogenic peptides comprising amyloid fibrils in vitro. The mechanism by which EGCG acts in the context of amyloid aggregation is not clear. Most of the biological effects of EGCG are attributable to its antioxidant activity. However, EGCG-oxidized products appear to be sufficient for the majority of EGCG amyloid remodeling observed against some polypeptides. If controlled, EGCG oxidation can afford homogenous microparticles (MPs) and can serve as drug delivery agents. Herein, we produced EGCG MPs by oxidative coupling and analyzed their activity during the aggregation of the protein α-synuclein (α-syn), the main protein related to Parkinson's disease. The MPs modestly remodeled mature amyloid fibrils and efficiently inhibited the amyloidogenic aggregation of α-syn. The MPs showed low cytotoxicity against both dopaminergic cells and microglial cells. The MPs reduced the cytotoxic effects of α-syn oligomers. Interestingly, the MPs were loaded with another antiamyloidogenic compound, increasing their activity against amyloid aggregation. We propose the use of EGCG MPs as a bifunctional strategy, blocking amyloid aggregation directly and carrying a molecule that can act synergistically to alleviate the symptoms caused by the amyloidogenic pathway.
