Abstract
The proposition of a minimal dose of resistance training (RT) to elicit health benefits, encompassing physiological and psychological aspects, has garnered attention. While empirical investigations have demonstrated the efficacy of low-volume RT protocols in inducing adaptations such as enhanced strength and functional capacity, further exploration of the effects of this paradigm across a broader spectrum of variables is warranted. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of minimal dose RT on strength and functional capacity, cardiac autonomic modulation, and hemodynamic parameters in menopausal women. Twenty-six women were randomly assigned to the training (TG: 63.2 ± 9.3 years) or control group (CG: 59.3 ± 7.6 years). Anthropometric measurements, strength and functional performance tests, cardiac autonomic assessment, and hemodynamic parameters were performed before and after four weeks of intervention. The TG performed the minimum dose RT twice weekly for four weeks (2 sets of 8-12 repetitions in three dynamic exercises, plus three 1-min isometric planks), and the CG had a weekly meeting with lectures and stretching. Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures was applied to each variable. Regarding time comparisons, there was a significant increase for LniRR (F = 4.78; ω2 = 0.046; p = 0.04), one repetition maximum (1RM) bench press (F = 8.06; ω2 = 0,013; p = 0.01), and 1RM leg press (F = 17.3; ω2 = 0,098; p < 0.01). There was a group*time interaction only for the index LnRMSSD (F = 5.11; ω2 = 0.042; p = 0.03), and 1RM bench press (F = 9.52; ω2 = 0,016; p = 0.01). No between-group main effect for any variable was found. The minimal dose RT protocol improved muscle strength, while cardiac autonomic and hemodynamic variables, as well as functional capacity, remained stable over 4 weeks in menopausal women.

Abstract
Background The association between exposure to cadmium (Cd) and cardiovascular health (CVH) has received considerable scientific interest. However, findings thus far have been inconclusive, particularly regarding sex-specific effects and dose-response relationships. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationships of blood Cd levels with the overall and component CVH scores. Methods We used data from the 2011-2018 NHANES to assess CVH using indicators such as BMI, blood pressure, lipid profiles, glucose levels, diet, physical activity, nicotine use, and sleep quality, each rated on a 0-100 scale. The overall CVH score was calculated as the average of these indicators. We employed both multiple linear and restricted cubic spline analyses to examine the relationship between blood Cd levels and CVH scores, including nonlinear patterns and subgroup-specific effects. Results Our analysis revealed that higher blood Cd levels were associated with lower overall CVH, nicotine exposure, sleep, and diet scores, with nonlinear decreases observed in overall CVH and nicotine exposure scores at specific thresholds (-1.447 and -1.752 log μg/dL, respectively). Notably, sex differences were evident; females experienced more adverse effects of Cd on CVH and lipid scores, while in males, Cd exposure was positively correlated with BMI, a link not observed in females. Conclusion Our study highlights the complex interplay between blood Cd levels and various aspects of CVH, revealing significant dose-response relationships and sex disparities. These findings enhance our understanding of the biobehavioral mechanisms linking Cd exposure to cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Background Bazi Bushen capsule (BZBS) is a Chinese herbal compound that is clinically used to treat fatigue and forgetfulness. However, it is still unclear whether and how BZBS affects heart function decline in menopausal women. This study aimed to examine the effect of BZBS on cardiac function in a high-fat diet-fed ovariectomy (HFD-fed OVX) mouse model and elucidate the underlying mechanism of this effect. Methods The experimental animals were divided into five groups: sham group, HFD-fed OVX group, and BZBS (0.7, 1.4, 2.8 g/kg) intervention groups. Senescence β-galactosidase staining and echocardiography were used to evaluate cardiac function. SwissTargetPrediction, KEGG and GO enrichment analyses were used to screen the underlying mechanism of BZBS. The morphological and functional changes in cardiac mitochondria and the underlying molecular mechanism were assessed by transmission electron microscopy, western blotting and biochemical assays. STRING database was used to analysis protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Molecular docking studies were employed to predict the interactions of specific BZBS compounds with their protein targets. Results BZBS treatment ameliorated cardiac senescence and cardiac systole injury in HFD-fed OVX mice. GO and KEGG analyses revealed that the 530 targets of the 14 main components of BZBS were enriched mainly in the oxidative stress-associated pathway, which was confirmed by the finding that BZBS treatment prevented abnormal morphological changes and oxidative stress damage to cardiac mitochondria in HFD-fed OVX mice. Furthermore, the STRING database showed that the targets of BZBS were broadly related to the Sirtuins family. And BZBS upregulated the SIRT3 and elevated the activity of SOD2 in the hearts of HFD-fed OVX mice, which was also verified in vitro. Additionally, we revealed that imperatorin and osthole from the BZBS upregulated the expression of SIRT3 by directly docking with the transcription factors HDAC1, HDAC2, and BRD4, which regulate the expression of SIRT3. Conclusion This research shows that the antioxidative effect and cardioprotective role of BZBS on HFD-fed OVX mice involves an increase in the activity of the SIRT3/SOD2 pathway, and the imperatorin and osthole of BZBS may play central roles in this process.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The rise in cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) reflects a major shift from communicable to noncommunicable diseases as primary health challenges. Consequently, this study aims to explore the burden of CVD and associated risk factors in SSA using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database. METHODS This study utilized data from the GBD 1990 to 2019 to examine CVD prevalence in 46 SSA countries. We employed Bayesian regression models, demographic techniques, and mortality-to-incidence ratios to analyze both prevalence and mortality rates. Additionally, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were computed, and various risk factors were examined using the GBD's comparative risk assessment framework. RESULTS Between 1990 and 2019, CVD raw counts in SSA rose by 131.7 %, with a 2.1 % increase in age-standardized prevalence rates. The most prevalent conditions were ischemic heart disease, stroke, and rheumatic heart disease. During the same period, the age-standardized CVD deaths per 100,000 individuals decreased from 314 (1990) to 269 (2019), reflecting a -14.4 % decline. Age-standardized CVD DALY rates also showed a decrease from 6,755 in 1990 to 5,476 in 2019, with translates to 18.9 % reduction. By 2019, the Central African Republic, Madagascar, and Lesotho were the countries with the highest age-standardized DALY rates for all CVDs. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights a contrasting trend in SSA's CVD landscape: a decrease in age-standardized mortality and DALYs contrasts with increasing CVD prevalence, emphasizing the need for targeted public health strategies that balance treatment advancements with intensified prevention and control measures.

Abstract
Abundant research has been published describing the effects invoked during menopause across different organ systems. Changing levels of estrogen and progesterone result in bidirectional alterations of immune cell pathways. Overall, the net trend dampens immunoregulation and promotes inflammation. In paradigmatic rheumatologic diseases, the combined effect is far from predictable. While some features may abate during menopause, studies have shown a general increased frequency toward disease exacerbation. Similarly, while impossible to isolate the ramifications of menopause in women with fibromyalgia, a tendency toward enhanced symptoms is unquestionably apparent. Furthermore, the comorbidities accrued by increasing age and the consequences of long-term medication use may also confound this picture. Periodic rheumatologic visits are warranted, with clinical assessments directed toward a multi-disciplinary approach. Ultimately, while an arsenal of effective tools is available for caring for these women and their underlying conditions, more studies are needed to better clarify how the different stages surrounding perimenopause affect subpopulations with rheumatic diseases and fibromyalgia-related disorders so that clinical course can be predicted and addressed prior to the emergence of symptomatology.

Abstract
Menopause is a natural physiological phase during which women experience dramatic hormonal fluctuations. These lead to many symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, which, in turn, can negatively affect quality of life. Proper nutrition has an influential role in alleviating depression as well as anxiety. It is well known that gut microbiota dysbiosis contributes to the development of mood disorder. There is mounting evidence that modulating the gut-brain axis may aid in improving mood swings. In this context, this narrative review summarizes recent findings on how aging changes the composition of the gut microbiota and on the association between gut microbiota and mood disorders. In addition, it evaluates the effectiveness of psychobiotics and fermented foods in treating mood swings in middle-aged and older women. A search was done using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, and thirteen recent articles are included in this review. It is evident that psychobiotic supplementation and fermented foods can improve mood swings via several routes. However, these conclusions are based on only a few studies in middle-aged and older women. Therefore, long-term, well-designed randomized controlled trials are required to fully evaluate whether psychobiotics and fermented foods can be used to treat mood swings in this population.

Abstract
Hormone therapy (HT) is important and frequently used both regarding replacement therapy (HRT) and gender affirming therapy (GAHT). While HRT has been effective in addressing symptoms related to hormone shortage, several side effects have been described. In this context, there are some studies that show increased cardiovascular risk. However, there are also studies reporting protective aspects of HT. Nevertheless, the exact impact of HT on cardiovascular risk and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This article explores the relationship between diverse types of HT and cardiovascular risk, focusing on mechanistic insights of the underlying hormones on platelet and leukocyte function as well as on effects on endothelial and adipose tissue cells.

Abstract
Pomegranate is widely used to preserve human health and help prevent many kinds of diseases. This study aims to review and assess the effects of pomegranate on women's health during and after menopause. PubMed, Web of science, Cochrane, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched up to the end of 2022 with no language or study type restriction. All types of clinical research studies (randomized clinical trial [RCT], pre-post, case report, and case series) were included. The Cochrane RoB 2.0 tool was used for quality assessment of RCTs. A summary of intervention's effects for each study was provided by calculating standardized mean differences and accompanying 95% confidence interval using random effect model. Weighted mean differences and heterogeneity between studies were assessed using Hedges's method and Cochran's Q test, respectively. Pomegranate can significantly improve hot flashes severity and menopause symptoms and decrease FSH. It significantly improves high-density lipoprotein but not low-density lipoprotein, body mass index, and weight. Most of our results are inconclusive, and the small sample sizes and the lack of blinding and randomization have led to an increased risk of bias. Pomegranate can decrease menopause symptoms, but more well-designed studies, with bigger sample sizes are needed to establish its other clinical benefits for menopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To distinguish the metabolic profile between women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) and those with normal ovarian reserve (NOR). METHODS In this retrospective study, we enrolled 524 women under the age of 40 who were experiencing infertility: 261 in the DOR group and 263 in the NOR group. Physical characteristics and metabolic parameters were compared between these two groups. RESULTS Women with DOR exhibited a higher propensity for elevated parameters including body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), as well as heightened serum levels of homocysteine (Hcy), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, while concurrently experiencing reduced serum levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the incidence rates of TG ≥ 1.7 mmol/L, hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, SBP/DBP ≥ 130/85 mmHg, and metabolic syndrome (MS) were significantly elevated within the DOR group as compared to the NOR group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The prevalence of metabolic disturbances and HHcy were notably elevated in women with infertility and DOR compared to those with NOR.

Abstract
The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is an important part of the natural immune system that plays an important role in many diseases. Estrogen is a sex hormone that plays an important role in controlling reproduction and regulates many physiological and pathological processes. Recent studies have indicated that estrogen is associated with disease progression. Estrogen can ameliorate some diseases (e. g, sepsis, mood disturbances, cerebral ischemia, some hepatopathy, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, osteoarthritis, and renal fibrosis) by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome. Estrogen can also promote the development of diseases (e.g., ovarian endometriosis, dry eye disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus) by upregulating the NLRP3 inflammasome. In addition, estrogen has a dual effect on the development of cancers and asthma. However, the mechanism of these effects is not summarized. This article reviewed the progress in understanding the effects of estrogen on the NLRP3 inflammasome and its mechanisms in recent years to provide a theoretical basis for an in-depth study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency is common among the population, but its relationship with mortality of postmenopausal females is unclear. The aim of this study is to explore the association between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and all-cause and cause-specific mortality among postmenopausal women in the United States. METHODS 6812 participants of postmenopausal females from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001-2018) were included in this study. The mortality status of the follow-up was ascertained by linkage to National Death Index (NDI) records through 31 December 2019. We used cox proportional hazards models to estimate the association of serum 25(OH)D concentrations and mortality of postmenopausal females. RESULTS The mean level of serum 25(OH)D was 72.57 ± 29.93 nmol/L, and 65.34% had insufficient vitamin D. In postmenopausal females, low serum 25(OH)D concentrations were significantly associated with higher levels of glycohemoglobin, glucose, and lower levels of HDL. During follow-up, 1448 all-cause deaths occurred, including 393 cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related deaths and 263 cancer deaths. After multivariate adjustment, higher serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly related with lower all-cause and CVD mortality. In addition, serum 25(OH)D presented a L-shaped relationship with all-cause mortality, while appeared a U-shaped with CVD mortality, and the cut-off value is 73.89 nmol/L and 46.75 nmol/L respectively. CONCLUSIONS Low serum 25(OH)D levels are associated with the higher risk of all-cause and CVD mortality in postmenopausal females. These findings provide new ideas and targets for the health management of postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, predisposing to major cardiovascular events, including coronary heart disease, stroke, aortic valve calcification and abdominal aortic aneurysm. Lp(a) is differentiated from other lipoprotein molecules through apolipoprotein(a), which possesses atherogenic and antithrombolytic properties attributed to its structure. Lp(a) levels are mostly genetically predetermined and influenced by the size of LPA gene variants, with smaller isoforms resulting in a greater synthesis rate of apo(a) and, ultimately, elevated Lp(a) levels. As a result, serum Lp(a) levels may highly vary from extremely low to extremely high. Hyperlipoproteinemia(a) is defined as Lp(a) levels > 30 mg/dL in the US and >50 mg/dL in Europe. Because of its association with CVD, Lp(a) levels should be measured at least once a lifetime in adults. The ultimate goal is to identify individuals with increased risk of CVD and intervene accordingly. Traditional pharmacological interventions like niacin, statins, ezetimibe, aspirin, PCSK-9 inhibitors, mipomersen, estrogens and CETP inhibitors have not yet yielded satisfactory results. The mean Lp(a) reduction, if any, is barely 50% for all agents, with statins increasing Lp(a) levels, whereas a reduction of 80-90% appears to be required to achieve a significant decrease in major cardiovascular events. Novel RNA-interfering agents that specifically target hepatocytes are aimed in this direction. Pelacarsen is an antisense oligonucleotide, while olpasiran, LY3819469 and SLN360 are small interfering RNAs, all conjugated with a N-acetylgalactosamine molecule. Their ultimate objective is to genetically silence LPA, reduce apo(a) production and lower serum Lp(a) levels. Evidence thus so far demonstrates that monthly subcutaneous administration of a single dose yields optimal results with persisting substantial reductions in Lp(a) levels, potentially enhancing CVD risk reduction. The Lp(a) reduction achieved with novel RNA agents may exceed 95%. The results of ongoing and future clinical trials are eagerly anticipated, and it is hoped that guidelines for the tailored management of Lp(a) levels with these novel agents may not be far off.

Abstract
Ovarian reserve is a term used to estimate the total number of immature follicles present in the ovaries. Between birth and menopause, there is a progressive decrease in the number of ovarian follicles. Ovarian aging is a continuous physiological phenomenon, with menopause being the clinical mark of the end of ovarian function. Genetics, measured as family history for age at the onset of menopause, is the main determinant. However, physical activity, diet, and lifestyle are important factors that can influence the age of menopause. The low estrogen levels after natural or premature menopause increased the risk for several diseases, resulting in increased mortality risk. Besides that, the decreasing ovarian reserve is associated to reduced fertility. In women with infertility undergoing in vitro fertilization, reduced markers of ovarian reserve, including antral follicular count and anti-Mullerian hormone, are the main indicators of reduced chances of becoming pregnant. Therefore, it becomes clear that the ovarian reserve has a central role in women's life, affecting fertility early in life and overall health later in life. Based on this, the ideal strategy for delaying ovarian aging should have the following characteristics: (1) be initiated in the presence of good ovarian reserve; (2) maintained for a long period; (3) have an action on the dynamics of primordial follicles, controlling the rate of activation and atresia; and (4) safe use in pre-conception, pregnancy, and lactation. In this review, we therefore discuss some of these strategies and its feasibility for preventing a decline in the ovarian reserve.

Abstract
Hypertension is the most prevalent cardiovascular disease of the adult population and is closely associated with serious cardiovascular events. The burden of hypertension with respect to vascular and other organ damage is greater in women. These sex differences are not fully understood. The unique feature in women is their transition to menopause accompanied by profound hormonal changes that affect the vasculature that are also associated with changes of blood pressure. Results from studies of hormone replacement therapy and its effects on the cardiovascular system are controversial, and the timing of treatment after menopause seems to be important. Therefore, revealing potential sex- and sex hormone-dependent pathophysiological mechanisms of hypertension in experimental studies could provide valuable information for better treatment of hypertension and vascular impairment, especially in postmenopausal women. The experimental rat models subjected to ovariectomy mimicking menopause could be useful tools for studying the mechanisms of blood pressure regulation after menopause and during subsequent therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine the effect of vitamin D (VitD) supplementation on serum heat-shock proteins (HSP) in postmenopausal women (PW). METHODS In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 160 PW aged 45 to 65 years with amenorrhea 12 months or more were randomized into two groups: 80 PW in VitD group (oral supplementation with 1,000 IU VitD 3 /d) or 80 PW in placebo group. The PW were assessed at baseline and after 10 months of intervention. Plasma concentrations of 25-hydroxyVitD (25[OH]D) were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. HSP27/pS78/pS82, HSP27/total, HSP60, HSP70/72, and HSP90α levels were assessed in serum using a multiplexed bead immunoassay. RESULTS HSP27 (pS78/pS82 [ P < 0.035] and total [ P < 0.001]) levels increased in the supplemented group when compared with the control group. There was no effect of VitD supplementation on HSP60, HSP70/72, and HSP90α levels. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D supplementation increases serum HSP27 level in PW.

Abstract
Religious fasting that involves abstinence from specific food(s) is part of many religions worldwide and has been gaining attention by the research community during the last years. The study aimed to investigate whether the periodic Christian Orthodox fasting mitigates the changes in body composition, dietary intake, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in postmenopausal women. One hundred and thirty-four postmenopausal women aged 57.3 ± 6.7 years participated in this study. The Christian Orthodox fasting was followed by 68 postmenopausal women since their childhood, whereas 66 postmenopausal women were non-fasters. Data collection involved anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary information. Postmenopausal women who fasted according to Christian Orthodox Church recommendations had significantly higher mean fat free mass (45 vs. 44 kg, p = 0.002), hip circumference (104 vs. 99 cm, p = 0.001), and diastolic blood pressure (79 vs. 82 mmHg, p = 0.024). No other differences were found with regards to anthropometric data. Fasters also consumed significantly less fat (78 vs. 91 g, p = 0.006), as well as saturated (19 vs. 23 g, p = 0.015), monounsaturated (41 vs. 47 g, p = 0.018), and polyunsaturated fat (8.5 vs. 10 g, p = 0.023), trans fatty acids (0.5 vs. 2.3 g, p = 0.035), and cholesterol (132 vs. 176 g, p = 0.011). In terms of MetS features, non-fasters had more frequently elevated fasting blood glucose (11.8 vs. 24.2%, p = 0.039) and elevated blood pressure (13.2 vs. 36.4%, p = 0.041) compared with fasters. MetS was more common in non-fasters versus fasters with a marginal level of significance (30.3 vs. 23.5%, p = 0.052). Postmenopausal women who follow the Christian Orthodox fasting regime had lower fat intake, and no other difference in nutrient intake, compared with non-fasters. The latter were more likely to have MetS and some of its components. Overall, periodic abstinence from meat, dairy products, and eggs might play a protective role in postmenopausal women with regard to MetS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) has been implicated in activating autophagy by upregulating SIRT3 (Sirtuin 3) expression, thereby inhibiting the senescence of vascular endothelial cells. Herein, we further examined the molecular mechanisms that regulate SIRT3 expression in 17β-E2-induced autophagy. METHODS Reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction was employed to measure the expression of plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 (PVT1), microRNAs (miRNAs), and SIRT3, and the dual-luciferase assay was used to determine their interaction. Electron microscopy observes autophagosomes, green fluorescent protein-microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (GFP-LC3) staining, and immunoblot analysis with antibodies against LC3,beclin-1, and P62 were conducted to measure autophagy. Cellular senescence was determined using immunoblot analysis with anti-phosphorylated retinoblastoma and senescence-associated β-galactosidase staining. RESULTS Women with higher estrogen levels (during the 10-13th day of the menstrual cycle or premenopausal) exhibit markedly higher serum levels of PVT1 than women with lower estrogen levels (during the menstrual period or postmenopausal). The dual-luciferase assay showed that PVT1 acts as a sponge for miR-31, and miR-31 binds to its target gene, SIRT3. The 17β-E2 treatment increased the expression of PVT1 and SIRT3 and downregulated miR-31 expression in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Consistently, PVT1 overexpression suppresses miR-31 expression, promotes 17β-E2-induced autophagy, and inhibits H2O2-induced senescence. miR-31 inhibitor increases SIRT3 expression and leads to activation of 17β-E2-induced autophagy and suppression of H2O2-induced senescence. CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrated that 17β-E2 upregulates PVT1 gene expression and PVT1 functions as a sponge to inhibit miR-31, resulting in the upregulation of SIRT3 expression and activation of autophagy and subsequent inhibition of H2O2-induced senescence in HUVECs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the prevalence and severity of menopausal symptoms and investigate their associated factors among rural and urban middle-aged Chinese women. METHODS A descriptive, cross-sectional study of 4,580 urban and 2,729 rural randomly sampled participants aged 40 to 55 years in Gansu Province, China, was conducted. Questionnaires assessing the sociodemographic information and menstrual and reproductive histories of the participants were administered. The modified Kupperman scale was used to assess the presence and severity of menopausal symptoms. Binary and ordinal logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with the occurrence and severity of menopausal syndrome, respectively, according to the modified Kupperman Menopausal Index score rank. RESULTS The natural menopausal age of the rural women was significantly lower than that of the urban women (rural: 47.22, urban: 47.98; P < 0.05). Furthermore, rural women had a higher prevalence (rural: 56.35%, urban: 43.47%) and severity (rural: 11.40%, urban: 6.61%) of menopausal syndrome than the urban women ( P < 0.05). For both the urban and rural women, the prevalence and severity of most menopausal symptoms increased as menopause progressed. The three most prevalent symptoms in both the urban and rural women were fatigue (rural: 70.43%, urban: 68.19%), muscle/joint pain (rural: 62.84%, urban: 59.32%), and vertigo (rural: 57.42%, urban: 47.44%). Positive associations between menopausal symptoms and age, residence, body mass index, level of education, time of pregnancy, menstrual cycle, and presence of chronic diseases were observed. CONCLUSIONS Rural women experience more frequent and severe menopausal syndrome than do urban women.

Abstract
Hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women. Both traditional and sex-specific risk modifiers occurring from menarche to pregnancy to menopause modulate the risk of hypertension and adverse cardiovascular events. This review provides a narrative summary of risk and treatment of hypertension in women across the lifespan, from adolescence to the post-menopausal period, where each period represents a potential window for risk assessment, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment. Management of hypertension throughout a woman's life must be included in a holistic cardiovascular prevention approach for women in order to prevent future cardiovascular complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Midlife in women is associated with an increase in prevalence of hypertension. Little is known on the risk factors of new-onset hypertension among middle-aged women. METHODS In this nested case-control study, 1,430 women aged 40 to 60 years with repeated physical examinations between 2009 and 2019 were recruited. Data included age, body mass index, blood pressure (BP), and a series of blood biomarkers. Participants with hypertension were divided into two case-control samples: 388 cases with episodic new-onset hypertension (ie, one normal BP at the first visit and one abnormal BP during follow-up) each with two age-matched controls (n = 776) and 151 cases with regular new-onset hypertension (ie, normal BP at the first two visits and abnormal BP at two or more follow-up visits) each with three age-matched controls (n = 453). Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression was used to analyze the data. RESULTS Our data showed very consistent results for episodic and regular new-onset hypertension, respectively, and verified known associations (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], per SD increase) with obesity (body mass index, 1.72 [1.49-1.98] and 1.81 [1.45-2.26]), inflammation (white blood cell count, 1.39 [1.23-1.58] and 1.38 [1.13-1.69]), and metabolic dysregulation (triglycerides, 1.25 [1.09-1.44] and 1.31 [1.08-1.58]; glucose, 1.46 [1.23-1.73] and 1.27 [1.05-1.54]) but, more surprisingly, also revealed positive associations with red blood cell count (1.27 [1.11-1.44] and 1.38 [1.14-1.68]), hemoglobin (1.18 [1.03-1.35] and 1.31 [1.05-1.64]), and platelet count (1.39 [1.20-1.61] and 1.33 [1.09-1.63]). CONCLUSIONS In addition to obesity and metabolic dysregulation, increased hemoglobin and counts of platelets, and red and white blood cells are associated with hypertension in this period. Future study may verify whether these associations are causal in nature and whether these variables are useful in risk stratification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Throughout the life stages of women with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSD), lower estrogen levels are associated with more severe disease course. At perimenopause in the mid-forties, estrogen levels decline to remain persistently low after menopause. This period is hypothesized to increase relapse risk and reduce antipsychotic effectiveness in preventing relapse. STUDY DESIGN The cohort of persons with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder was identified from Finnish nationwide registers (N = 61 889) and stratified by sex and age <45 vs. ≥45 years. Hospitalizations for psychosis were defined per 5-year age group during the follow-up 1996-2017. Risk of psychosis hospitalization (Adjusted Hazard Ratio, aHR) was assessed using within-individual design, by comparing antipsychotic monotherapy use to nonuse periods in the same individuals for seven dose categories in defined daily doses (DDDs/day). RESULTS Starting at age 45-50, women were consistently more often hospitalized for psychosis than their male peers. Women ≥45 had significantly higher aHRs than women <45 at antipsychotic monotherapy >0.6 DDDs/day, and than men at >1.1 DDDs/day. This female-specific age-dependent decrease in effectiveness was present for clozapine doses >0.6 DDDs/day, olanzapine doses >1.4 DDDs/day, and for specific doses of quetiapine (0.9-1.1 DDDs/day) and risperidone (0.6-0.9 DDDs/day). CONCLUSIONS While younger women have a lower risk of relapse and generally need a lower antipsychotic dose to prevent rehospitalization than men, antipsychotic effectiveness declines in women after the age of 45. Starting in mid-forties, older women with SSD should be regarded as a vulnerable group that deserve special attention.

Abstract
Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and is characterized by progressive loss of visual function and retinal ganglion cells (RGC). Current epidemiological, clinical, and basic science evidence suggest that estrogen plays a role in the aging of the optic nerve. Menopause, a major biological life event affecting all women, coincides with a decrease in circulating sex hormones, such as estrogen. While 59% of the glaucomatous population are females, sex is not considered a risk factor for developing glaucoma. In this review, we explore whether menopause is a sex-specific risk factor for glaucoma. First, we investigate how menopause is defined as a sex-specific risk factor for other pathologies, including cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, and bone health. Next, we discuss clinical evidence that highlights the potential role of menopause in glaucoma. We also highlight preclinical studies that demonstrate larger vision and RGC loss following surgical menopause and how estrogen is protective in models of RGC injury. Lastly, we explore how surgical menopause and estrogen signaling are related to risk factors associated with developing glaucoma (e.g., intraocular pressure, aqueous outflow resistance, and ocular biomechanics). We hypothesize that menopause potentially sets the stage to develop glaucoma and therefore is a sex-specific risk factor for this disease.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Menopause is a biological stage associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality due to changes in sex hormone levels. OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to investigate the benefits and harms of RT in menopausal and postmenopausal women. EVIDENCE REVIEW We searched PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to 2021, and clinical trial registries. Randomized controlled trials (RCT) in menopausal and postmenopausal women that compared women undergoing RT programs with a control group were included. The primary outcomes were C-reactive protein level and adverse events; and, the secondary outcomes were lipid profile and waist circumference. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted data, and assessed the completeness of RT programs, risk of bias, and quality of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach (GRADE). A random-effects model was used. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. FINDINGS Twelve RCTs published from 2012 to 2020 met the inclusion criteria (n = 482). Four follow-up periods were assessed. RT caused reductions in C-reactive protein levels compared to those in the control group in postmenopausal women in the short- to long-term follow-up (mean difference, -0.47 mg/dL; 95% confidence interval, -0.66 to -0.29; P < 0.00001). Furthermore, RT may reduce C-reactive protein levels even at moderate and moderate-to-high intensity ( P < 0.0001 and P = 0.0005, respectively). Similar findings were found for lipid profiles in the short- to long-term follow-up ( P < 0.05). RT may have had little to no effect on waist circumference. The certainty of the body of evidence was assessed as very low and downgraded owing to serious study limitations, inconsistency, imprecision, and publication bias. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE There was very low-quality evidence supporting the benefits of RT compared with control for C-reactive protein levels and lipid profile. No benefits were found for the outcome of waist circumference in postmenopausal women with different comorbidities or risk factors. Safety data were scarce. We have little confidence in the results, and the true effect is likely to be substantially different. Further well-conducted and well-reported RCTs are warranted to strengthen the evidence. Abstract
Aging is an important risk factor for the development of heart failure (HF) and half of patients with HF have preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) which is more common in elderly women. In general, sex differences that lead to discrepancies in risk factors and to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been attributed to the reduced level of circulating estrogen during menopause. Estrogen receptors adaptively modulate fibrotic, apoptotic, inflammatory processes and calcium homeostasis, factors that are directly involved in the HFpEF. Therefore, during menopause, estrogen depletion reduces the cardioprotection. Preclinical menopause models demonstrated that several signaling pathways and organ systems are closely involved in the development of HFpEF, including dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), chronic inflammatory process and alteration in the sympathetic nervous system. Thus, this review explores thealterations observed in the condition of HFpEF induced by menopause and the therapeutic targets with potential to interfere with the disease progress.

Prevalence of cerebrovascular accidents in patients with ulcerative colitis in a single academic health system. Sci Rep 2022; 12:18668. Abstract
In general, IBD increases arteriovenous thromboembolic events, though the association between UC and cerebrovascular complications remains inconclusive. Some studies suggest young women with UC have an increased risk of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). The focus of this study was to characterize the rates, anatomic distribution, and risk factors for CVA in patients with UC. We developed a retrospective cohort of patients with UC at a single health care system from June 2010 to June 2015. Neuroimaging was used to document presence, location and type of stroke and traditional risk factors were considered. Prevalence of CVAs in patients with UC was compared to that of the general population of Minnesota (MN) and the United States (U.S.). A total of 2,183 UC patients were identified (1088 females [f-UC], 1095 males [m-UC]). The prevalence of CVA in UC patients (4.7%, 95% CI 3.9-5.6) was higher than in the U.S. (2.5-2.7%, p < 0.0001) and in Minnesota (1.8% CI 1.5-2.2, p < 0.0001) . The prevalence increased in both sexes with a peak prevalence of 24.7% (95% CI 17.1-34.4) in women with UC over the age of 80. Older age, cancer and atrial fibrillation were risk factors for CVA in univariate analysis for both sexes. In multifactorial analysis, both age and atrial fibrillation were risk factors for CVA in the m-UC cohort, but only age was associated with CVA in f-UC. The most common type of CVA was ischemic stroke (77.7%). The most common locations for CVAs in UC patients were frontal and occipital lobes (19% and 18%, respectively). UC patients have an increased risk for CVA, with women over 80 demonstrating the highest risk. Providers should be aware of these risks in making treatment decisions for UC.

Abstract
To assess the link between a mixed heavy metal (cadmium, lead, and mercury) and the 10-year risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in pre- and post-menopausal Korean women aged ≥20 years, as well as identify potential molecular mechanisms of mixed heavy metal-induced CVDs. Multivariate linear regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, quantile g-computation (gqcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to examine the effects of mixed heavy metals and the 10-year risk of CVDs. The Comparative Toxicogenomics Database, MicroRNA ENrichment TURned NETwork, and the microRNA sponge generator and tester were used as the key data-mining approaches. In our BKMR analysis, we found that the overall effect of mixed heavy metals was linked to the 10-year risk of CVDs in postmenopausal women in the upper 20th percentiles and in premenopausal women in the upper 55th percentiles. Mercury was identified as the key chemical for the 10-year risk of CVDs in pre- and postmenopausal women. In silico analysis revealed that a heavy metal mixture interacted with six genes associated with CVD development. Physical interactions (77.6%) were found to be the most common among CVD-related genes induced by the heavy metals studied. Several pathways have been identified as the main molecular mechanisms that could be affected by studied heavy metals and are implicated in the development of CVDs (e.g., lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, lipoprotein metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, and cardiovascular disease). ALB, APOE, ATF5, and CREB3L3 were the key genes and transcription factors related to CVDs induced by the mixture of the investigated heavy metals, respectively. The two miRNAs with the highest interaction and expression in the development of CVDs were hsa-miR-199a-5p and hsa-miR-199a-3p. We also designed and tested miRNA sponge sequences for these miRNAs. The cutoff thresholds for each heavy metal level linked with the 10-year risk of CVDs were described. A mixture of heavy metal exposures, especially mercury, was more strongly linked with the 10-year risk of CVDs in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women. Early interventions in postmenopausal women should be considered to reduce CVD risks.

Abstract
AIM Endometriosis is linked to asymptomatic atherosclerosis and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Vascular function tests are used to assess atherosclerosis, an important indicator of CVD development. In this study, we aimed to evaluate atherosclerosis-related biomarkers, such as vascular function tests and laboratory data, in perimenopausal women with endometriosis. METHODS This prospective cohort study enrolled 207 women (≥40 years old) with endometriosis. Laboratory data, ankle brachial index (ABI), and cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) were evaluated. RESULTS The mean age, CAVI, and ABI of the participants at the initial examination were 45.02 years, 6.9 ± 0.6, and 1.07 ± 0.06, respectively. In multiple regression analysis, no factor was associated with CAVI, but ABI was significantly correlated with elevated total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and estradiol (partial regression coefficient [β] = -0.00074, p = 0.017; β = -0.00075, p = 0.033; and β = -0.00022, p = 0.015, respectively). The annual rate of change in CAVI showed a positive correlation with TC and pentosidine and a negative correlation with history of hormone therapy. Neither correlation was strong. In a comparison of three groups classified by the annual rate of change in CAVI, the group with the severe change had a higher level of pentosidine. In adjusted multinomial logistic regression analysis, high pentosidine levels were a risk factor for increased rate of change in CAVI. CONCLUSIONS The association between CAVI and serum markers related to lipid metabolism and ovarian function was mild. Longitudinal analysis of CAVI showed an association with pentosidine, which may be helpful in assessing atherosclerosis risk in women with endometriosis during perimenopause.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the combined effects of depression and obesity on ischemic heart disease and its subtypes. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2018 were used. A total of 29,050 participants aged 20 years or older were included in the analyses. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline models were applied to evaluate the associations between depression symptom and ischemic heart disease. There were significant correlations between depressive symptoms and ischemic heart disease [OR and 95% CI 2.44 (1.91, 3.10)] and its subtypes: coronary heart disease [2.32 (1.67, 3.23)], heart attack [2.18 (1.71, 2.78)], and angina [2.72 (1.96, 3.79)].The synergistic effects of depression with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) and central obesity (waist ≥ 102/88 cm for men/women) on ischemic heart disease were estimated and expressed using the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and the attributable proportion due to interaction (AP). The RERI and AP with 95% CIs of depression and central obesity for ischemic heart disease were 1.10 (0.01, 2.19) and 0.35 (0.06, 0.64). When we analysed the other three subtypes of ischemic heart disease, we only found depressive symptoms and central obesity could have a meaningful synergistic effect on heart attack (RERI: 0.84 (− 0.28, 1.96) AP: (0.31 (0.00, 0.69)).

Abstract
Unhealthy diet and inappropriate lifestyle contribute to an imbalance in cardiometabolic profiles among postmenopausal women. This research aimed to analyze the association between dietary pattern and changes in cardiovascular risk factors among postmenopausal Taiwanese women using binary logistic regression. This cross-sectional study involved 5689 postmenopausal Taiwanese women aged 45 years and above, and the data were obtained from Mei Jau Health Management Institution database between 2001 and 2015. The cardiovascular risk dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of processed food, rice/flour products, organ meat, and sauce was derived by reduced rank regression. Participants in the highest quartile of the cardiovascular risk dietary pattern were more likely to have high levels of systolic blood pressure (OR = 1.29, 95% CI 1.08-1.53), diastolic blood pressure (OR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.01-1.62), atherogenic index of plasma (OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.06-1.49), triglycerides (OR = 1.38, 95% CI 1.17-1.62), and fasting blood glucose (Q3: OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.07-1.97). However, this dietary pattern was not correlated with total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and C-reactive protein. Therefore, adherence to the cardiovascular risk dietary pattern increases the risk of having higher levels of blood pressure, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose in postmenopausal Taiwanese women.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases remain an age-related pathology in both men and women. These pathologies are 3-fold more frequent in men than in women before menopause, although this difference progressively decreases after menopause. The vasculoprotective role of estrogens are well established before menopause, but the consequences of their abrupt decline on the cardiovascular risk at menopause remain debated. In this review, we will attempt to summarize the main clinical and experimental studies reporting the protective effects of estrogens against cardiovascular diseases, with a particular focus on atherosclerosis, and the impact of aging and estrogen deprivation on their endothelial actions. The arterial actions of estrogens, but also part of that of androgens through their aromatization into estrogens, are mediated by the estrogen receptor (ER)α and ERβ. ERs belong to the nuclear receptor family and act by transcriptional regulation in the nucleus, but also exert non-genomic/extranuclear actions. Beside the decline of estrogens at menopause, abnormalities in the expression and/or function of ERs in the tissues, and particularly in arteries, could contribute to the failure of classic estrogens to protect arteries during aging. Finally, we will discuss how recent insights in the mechanisms of action of ERα could contribute to optimize the hormonal treatment of the menopause.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cimicifuga racemosa extracts (CRE) have obtained a "well-established use status" in the treatment of postmenopausal (i.e., climacteric) complaints, which predominantly include vasomotor symptoms such as hot flushes and sweating, as well as nervousness, irritability, and metabolic changes. Although characteristic postmenopausal complaints are known for a very long time and the beneficial effects of CRE on climacteric symptoms are well accepted, both the pathophysiology of postmenopausal symptoms and the mechanism of action of CREs are not yet fully understood. In particular, current hypotheses suggest that changes in the α-adrenergic and serotonergic signaling pathways secondary to estrogen depletion are responsible for the development of hot flushes. PURPOSE Some of the symptoms associated with menopause cannot be explained by these hypotheses. Therefore, we attempted to extend our classic understanding of menopause by integrating of partly age-related metabolic impairments. METHODS A comprehensive literature survey was performed using the PubMed database for articles published through September 2021. The following search terms were used: (cimicifuga OR AMPK) AND (hot flush* OR hot flash* OR menopaus* OR osteoporos* OR cancer OR antioxida* OR cardiovasc*). No limits were set with respect to language, and the references cited in the articles retrieved were used to identify additional publications. RESULTS We found that menopause is a manifestation of the general aging process, with specific metabolic changes that aggravate menopausal symptoms, which are accelerated by estrogen depletion and associated neurotransmitter dysregulation. Cimicifuga extracts with their metabolic effects mitigate climacteric symptoms but may also modulate the aging process itself. Central to these effects are effects of CRE on the metabolic key regulator, the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). CONCLUSIONS As an extension of this effect dimension, other off-label indications may appear attractive in the sense of repurposing of this herbal treatment.

Abstract
Senescent cells are in a cell cycle arrest state and accumulate with aging and obesity, contributing to a chronic inflammatory state. Treatment with senolytic drugs dasatinib and quercetin (D + Q) can reduce senescent cell burden in several tissues, increasing lifespan. Despite this, there are few reports about senescent cells accumulating in female reproductive tissues. Therefore, the aim of the study was to characterize the ovarian reserve and its relationship with cellular senescence in genetically obese mice (ob/ob). In experiment 1, ob/ob (n = 5) and wild-type (WT) mice (n = 5) at 12 months of age were evaluated. In experiment 2, 2-month-old female ob/ob mice were treated with senolytics (D + Q, n = 6) or placebo (n = 6) during the 4 months. Obese mice had more senescent cells in ovaries, indicated by increased p21 and p16 and lipofuscin staining and macrophage infiltration. Treatment with D + Q significantly reduced senescent cell burden in ovaries of obese mice. Neither obesity nor treatment with D + Q affected the number of ovarian follicles. In conclusion, our data indicate that obesity due to leptin deficiency increases the load of senescent cells in the ovary, which is reduced by treatment by senolytics. However, neither obesity nor D + Q treatment affected the ovarian reserve.

Abstract
AIM Endocrinometabolic disorders in women of reproductive age, including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has contributed to increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and its attendant complications. Acetate, the most abundant endogenously produced short chain fatty acid has been linked to metabolic health. However, the impact of acetate on CVD-driven pathologies in PCOS is unknown. The present study therefore investigated the effects of acetate on cardiometabolic abnormalities associated with PCOS in rat model, and the possible involvement of PCSK9/NF-kB-dependent pathways. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight-week-old female Wistar rats were allotted into four groups (n = 6) and the groups received vehicle, acetate (200 mg/kg), letrozole (1 mg/kg) and letrozole plus acetate respectively. The administrations were done once daily by oral gavage and lasted for 21 days. KEY FINDINGS In letrozole-induced PCOS rats characterized with insulin resistance, glucose dysregulation, elevated plasma testosterone and decreased 17-β estradiol as well as degenerated ovarian follicles, there was a significant increase in plasma and cardiac lipid/lipoproteins, lipid peroxidation, inflammatory mediators (NF-kB and TNF-α), γ-glutamyl transferase/lactate dehydrogenase and lactate content, PCSK9 and reduction in plasma and cardiac antioxidants (glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione) and plasma nitric oxide synthesis (eNOS and NO) compared with the control rats. In addition, immunohistochemical assessment of cardiac tissue showed severe expression of inflammasome in letrozole-induced PCOS rats compared with the control rats. Nevertheless, supplementation with acetate significantly attenuated these alterations. SIGNIFICANCE The present results suggest that acetate protects against cardiac inflammation in a rat model of PCOS by suppression of PCSK9 and NF-kB-dependent mechanisms.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and the Risk of Diabetes Mellitus by Menopausal Status: A Nationwide Cohort Study. J Pers Med 2022; 12:jpm12040546. Abstract
Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is regarded as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Menopausal status also influences T2DM risk, where estrogen is presumed to play a protective role by decreasing insulin resistance. As such, we investigated the association between NAFLD and DM risk according to menopausal status. Objectives: We sought to examine the association between NAFLD and DM incidence in pre- and post-menopausal women. Methods: A total of 842,772 pre-menopausal and 1,074,767 post-menopausal women who underwent health examinations between 2009 and 2014 were included from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the risk of DM according to menopausal status and NAFLD, defined by a fatty liver index >60. Results: During the mean follow-up period (7.8 years), DM was diagnosed in 33,461 (4.0%) of pre-menopausal women and 121,102 (9.4%) post-menopausal women. A stronger association between NAFLD and the risk of DM was found in pre-menopausal women (multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 3.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.48−3.71) than in post-menopausal women (aHR, 2.24; 95% CI, 2.21−2.28) (P-interaction < 0.01). Subgroup analyses among women aged 45 to 55 years also showed a stronger association in pre-menopausal (aHR, 3.35; 95% CI, 3.21−3.49) than in post-menopausal women (aHR, 2.83; 95% CI, 2.68−2.98) (P-interaction < 0.01). Conclusions: The association between NAFLD and DM was stronger in pre-menopausal women than in post-menopausal women. This might be due to the protective effect of estrogen, which is possibly in higher production in the peripheral fat tissue of post-menopausal women with NAFLD.

Abstract
The study involved clinical and laboratory examination of 54 women with vasomotor menopausal disorders divided into 3 subgroups depending on the duration of symptoms (not more than 12 months, about 3 years, from 5 to 7 years). The control group included 21 patients without vasomotor disorders during the menopausal period. Data from the general and obstetric-gynecological anamnesis and the results of objective and general clinical examinations were analyzed. To assess the state of intestinal microbiocenosis in patients, a bacteriological study of feces was used according to modern methods. In women with menopausal vasomotor disorders, chronic arterial hypertension, overweight, diabetes mellitus, chronic enterocolitis, and chronic pyelonephritis prevailed among somatic diseases. The study also revealed that these patients had a pronounced imbalance of the intensive microbiota, which was characterized by a significant decrease in the main representatives of the obligate microflora (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus) and an increase in the number of opportunistic strains (Klebsiella and Clostridiodes difficile). Considering modern concepts, a change in the microbial composition of the intestine may be one of the possible trigger factors for the occurrence of vasomotor menopausal disorders. Further research will clarify the influence of the microbiome on the formation of the pathological menopausal symptom complex and improve the preventive and therapeutic measures in this category of women.

Abstract
Abstract Objective To analyze the differences between the proportions of chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) at two time periods, in a cohort of older adults, based on sociodemographic determinants. Method This is a retrospective longitudinal study with baseline data obtained in 2008-2009 and follow-up in 2016-2017, from the FIBRA Study. The McNemar test was used to compare the frequencies of CNCDs according to sex, age, and education, with a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). Results The sample consisted of 453 older adults (mean age 72±5.2 years old; 69.4% women). There was an increase in the proportions of arterial hypertension (64.4% versus 71.1%) and diabetes mellitus (21.9% versus 27.5%) in the periods studied, and a reduction in rheumatologic disease (43.6% versus 35.8%) and depression (21.7% versus 15.7%). Hypertension increased in older women, in those aged 65-74 years old and those with low education levels. Diabetes increased in older men, in those over 65 years of age and those with low education levels. A reduction in the proportions of rheumatologic diseases and depression was observed in women, in those aged 65-74 years old and those with low education levels. Conclusion The data reflect the need to understand the sociodemographic health determinants involved in the health-disease-care process to reduce social inequities and the burden of CNCDs in the most vulnerable population segments, especially in the older adult population with multimorbidity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of aerobics training on anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance in perimenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 289 perimenopausal women with anxiety, depression or sleep disorder in Lishi district of Luliang city were treated with aerobics training. Self-rating anxiety scale, self-rating depression scale and Pittsburgh sleep scale were used to investigate the anxiety, depression and sleep status of perimenopausal women before and after intervention. RESULTS After aerobics training, the scores of self-rating anxiety scale, self-rating depression scale and Pittsburgh sleep questionnaire were 48.26 ± 6.47, 50.27 ± 6.54 and 10.64 ± 4.38, respectively. The levels of anxiety, depression and sleep disorder in 289 subjects were significantly lower than those before intervention (t = 3.865, 4.541, 5.596, P < 0.01). The remission rate of symptoms was significantly different in subjects with different frequency of spontaneous practice (P < 0.01), and the higher the number of spontaneous practice, the higher the remission rate of anxiety, depression and sleep disorders in subjects (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION aerobics training can effectively improve the anxiety and depression of perimenopausal women, improve sleep quality, the more frequency of practice, the more obvious the effect. It can be used as an intervention to improve the mental health level of perimenopausal women in terms of anxiety, depression and sleep quality in clinical promotion.

Resumo Objetivo Analisar as diferenças entre as proporções de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis (DCNT), em dois momentos, em uma coorte de idosos a partir de determinantes sociodemográficos. Método Trata-se de estudo longitudinal retrospectivo com dados obtidos do Estudo FIBRA linha de base (2008-2009) e seguimento (2016-2017). O teste de McNemar foi utilizado para comparar as frequências de DCNT segundo sexo, idade e escolaridade, com nível de significância de 5% (p<0,05). Resultados A amostra foi composta por 453 idosos (idade média 72±5,2 anos; 69,4% do sexo feminino). Observou-se aumento nas proporções de hipertensão arterial (64,4% versus 71,1%) e diabetes mellitus (21,9% versus 27,5%) no período estudado, e redução nas de doença reumatológica (43,6% versus 35,8%) e depressão (21,7% versus 15,7%). A hipertensão aumentou no sexo feminino, e nos idosos com 65-74 anos e com baixa escolaridade; o diabetes aumentou nos idosos do sexo masculino e nos indivíduos com idade acima de 65 anos e com baixa escolaridade; observou-se redução das proporções de doenças reumatológicas e de depressão no decorrer do estudo nas mulheres, naqueles com 65-74 anos de idade e com nível mais baixo de escolaridade. Conclusão Os dados refletem a necessidade de compreensão dos determinantes sociodemográficos de saúde envolvidos no processo saúde-doença-cuidado para a redução de iniquidades sociais e da carga de DCNT nos segmentos populacionais mais vulneráveis, especialmente na população idosa com multimorbidade.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) includes a long asymptomatic stage, which precedes the formal diagnosis of dementia. AD biomarker models provide a framework for precision medicine approaches during this stage. However, such approaches have ignored the possible influence of sex on cognition and brain health, despite female sex noted as a major risk factor. Since AD-related changes may emerge in midlife, intervention efforts are being redirected around this period. Midlife coincides with several endocrinological changes, such as the menopausal transition experienced by women. In this narrative review, we discuss evidence for sex-differences in AD neuropathological burden and outline key endocrinological mechanisms for both sexes, focussing on hormonal events throughout the lifespan that may influence female susceptibility to AD neuropathology and dementia onset. We further consider common non-modifiable (genetic) and modifiable (lifestyle and health) risk factors, highlighting possible sex-dependent differential effects for the AD disease course. Finally, we evaluate the studies selected for this review demonstrating sex-differences in cognitive, pathological and health factors, summarising the state of sex differences in AD risk factors. We further provide recommendations for targeted research on female-specific risk factors, to inform personalised strategies for AD-prevention and the promotion of female brain health.

Abstract
Chronotype is defined as the behavioral manifestation of circadian rhythms related to the external light–dark cycle. Evening chronotype has been associated with an increased risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases in obesity. Menopause is a lifestage associated with an increased risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases and a change in circadian rhythmicity compared to pre-menopause. However, the prevalence of chronotype categories in menopause and their role in determining menopause-related cardiometabolic risk, mostly in obesity, have not been investigated. Thus, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of chronotype categories in post-menopausal women with obesity and their role in menopause-related cardiometabolic risk. In this cross-sectional study we enrolled 49 pre-menopausal and 74 post-menopausal women with obesity. Anthropometric parameters, lifestyle habits, adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD), sleep quality, chronotype and the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were studied. No significance differences were detected in terms of lifestyle and adherence to the MD between pre- and post-menopausal women. Chronotype was classified as morning in 66 (53.6%), evening in 20 (16.3%) and intermediate in 37 (30.1%) women. In addition, pre-menopausal women with obesity showed a significantly higher chance to have an intermediate chronotype (OR = 2.21, 95% CI 1.28–3.83; p = 0.004), whereas post-menopausal women with obesity showed a trend to have a higher morning chronotype (OR = 1.42, 95% CI 0.98–2.06; p = 0.051), although this did not reach statistical significance. No significant differences were detected in terms of prevalence of evening chronotype between the two groups. However, the evening chronotype had a significantly higher risk to have T2DM compared to the morning (OR = 17.29, 95% CI 2.40–124.27; p = 0.005) and intermediate chronotypes (OR = 30.86, 95% CI 2.05–464.32; p = 0.013) in both pre- and post-menopausal women with obesity. In conclusion, the intermediate chronotype was significantly more prevalent in pre-menopausal women with obesity compared to post-menopausal women. Evening chronotype was associated to T2DM in both pre- and post-menopause. These results support the importance of including the assessment of chronotype in the management of women with obesity in post-menopause.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The menopause is associated in females with the presence of dysglycemia, insulin resistance and with the development of endothelial dysfunction. Tibolone (TIB) is a synthetic steroid compound with selective oestrogenic and, to a lesser extent, progestogenic and androgenic properties prescribed to postmenopausal women to alleviate the symptoms of the climaterium and to prevent the development of osteoporosis. However, the impact of TIB on fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index and flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in women has not been evaluated so far. Thus, to investigate this research question, we conducted the present systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS Two independent reviewers searched the Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed/Medline and Embase databases up to 20 December 2020. The weighted mean differences (WMDs) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird random effects models between the TIB and control groups and included in the forest plot. RESULTS The overall findings were generated from 12 eligible randomized controlled trials. As compared to controls, TIB administration resulted in a significant reduction of FBS (WMD: -3.06 mg/dL, 95% CI: -5.30 to -0.82, P = 0.007), and of the HOMA-IR index (WMD: -0.61, 95% CI: -1.11 to -0.11, P = 0.01). However, treatment with TIB did not lead to significant changes of the FMD (WMD: 0.78%, 95% CI: -0.20 to 1.77, P = 0.12) or of insulin levels (WMD: -0.10 mIU/L, 95% CI: -2.04 to 1.83, P = 0.91). CONCLUSION TIB administration can decrease FBS and the HOMA-IR index in postmenopausal women. However, the use of TIB does not influence insulin levels or FMD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to validate a commercially available luteinising hormone (LH) cat ELISA, to determine whether the increases in plasma LH concentration that occur after neutering are maintained throughout cats' lives and if other factors such as calendar seasons in both intact and neutered cats, and neutering age in neutered cats, influence plasma LH concentrations. METHODS Stored plasma samples from client-owned cats were used for the measurement of LH concentrations. Clinical data, including age, sex, age at neutering and medical history, were reviewed. Two populations were included in this study: (1) a senior and geriatric cat population (⩾9 years old), including 18 intact and 18 neutered cats matched for age, sex and month of sample collection; and (2) an adult cat population (2-8 years old), including 45 neutered cats. LH concentrations were measured using a commercially available feline ELISA. RESULTS Senior and geriatric neutered cats had higher plasma LH concentrations than age-matched intact cats (P <0.001). Calendar season did not influence plasma LH concentrations in the adult (P = 0.727) or senior/geriatric (P = 0.745) cats included in this study. No influence of age at neutering was observed on plasma LH concentrations (P = 0.296). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Neutering causes a significant long-term increase in LH concentrations in cats and further studies are required to determine the consequences on feline health.

Abstract
A high protein intake at old age is important for muscle protein synthesis, however, this could also trigger protein oxidation with the potential risk for DNA damage. The aim of this study was to investigate whether an increased protein intake at recommended level or well above would affect DNA damage or change levels of reduced (GSH) and oxidised glutathione (GSSG) in community-dwelling elderly subjects. These analyses were performed in two randomized intervention studies, in Austria and in New Zealand. In both randomized control trials, the mean protein intake was increased with whole foods, in the New Zealand study (n = 29 males, 74.2 ± 3.6 years) to 1.7 g/kg body weight/d (10 weeks intervention; p < 0.001)) in the Austrian study (n = 119 males and females, 72.9 ± 4.8 years) to 1.54 g/kg body weight/d (6 weeks intervention; p < 0.001)). In both studies, single and double strand breaks and as formamidopyrimidine-DNA glycosylase-sensitive sites were investigated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells or whole blood. Further, resistance to H2O2 induced DNA damage, GSH, GSSG and CRP were measured. Increased dietary protein intake did not impact on DNA damage markers and GSH/GSSG levels. A seasonal-based time effect (p < 0.05), which led to a decrease in DNA damage and GSH was observed in the Austrian study. Therefore, increasing the protein intake to more than 20% of the total energy intake in community-dwelling seniors in Austria and New Zealand did not increase measures of DNA damage, change glutathione status or elevate plasma CRP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amongst the cardiovascular risk (CVR) factors, hypertension (HT) and obesity appear to be prominent in post-menopausal women. The underlying mechanisms of HT development in menopause are not fully understood. AIM To determine the association between HT, obesity and dietary intakes in post-menopausal women from rural Zambia. SETTING This study was conducted in Twatasha Compound of Kitwe and Ndeke Community of Ndola. METHODS Blood pressure (BP), weight, height and dietary intakes (24-h recall) were measured in 153 women (> 50 years) from households. The South African Hypertension Society (SAHS), the World Health Organization (WHO) and estimated average requirements (EARs) guidelines were followed for HT, obesity and dietary intake definitions, respectively. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 was used for descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. RESULTS Prevalence of HT was 70%, whilst 37.25% and 28.10% of the participants were overweight and obese, respectively. The median interquartile range (IQR) dietary intakes showed inadequate intakes for most nutrients, except for carbohydrates (170 g [133; 225]). The total fat intake represented 14% of total energy intake. All median fatty acid intakes and sodium intakes (409 mg [169; 662]) were below the recommended levels. Only body mass index (BMI) correlated with HT (r = 0.268; p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Despite low dietary intakes, an alarming prevalence of HT and obesity was found in our population. Hormonal changes, a high energy-dense diet and poor treatment adherence, may be possible underlying factors. We recommend measures to better manage HT as a CVR factor. CONTRIBUTION This article supplements evidence on the prevalence of obesity-related hypertension in post-menopausal women and the link to dietary intake.

Abstract
Heart disease, such as coronary heart disease (CHD), is the leading cause of death among aging women. However, over the past years, the mortality rate has declined, resulting in an increased number of CHD survivors. In this context, research has uncovered relationships between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the development of neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting that CHD can act as a precursor. Despite heart disease affecting both sexes, CVD research has significantly neglected women. Therefore, we conducted the first systematic review of neuropsychological sequelae of CHD in women to gain a clear portrait of the current knowledge of the association of CHD on women's neuropsychological status. We found that studies continue to include an insufficient number of women in their research. Our work also uncovered that there is variability in the definition of CHD by researchers (i.e., operationalization of the variable), which could explain inconsistencies across studies. Overall, we found evidence that supports the heart-brain disease hypothesis. To conclude, we provide several guidelines for future research involving the impact of CHD in women.

Abstract
The prevalence of hypertension is higher in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women. Regular exercise training has been shown to be effective in addressing hypertension. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize the effect of exercise training on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in menopausal and postmenopausal women. This review was reported according to the PRISMA statement and registered in PROSPERO. The literature search was done in MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL and ClinicalTrials. Randomized controlled trials involving menopausal and postmenopausal women undergoing exercise training were included. Two blinded reviewers assessed risk of bias in the included studies by using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. A random-effects model was used for all analyses. Significance was set at P < 0.05. Compared with the control group, exercise training resulted in clinically significant reductions on SBP (MD -3.43 mmHg; 95% CI, -5.16, -1.71; P < 0.0001), DBP (MD, -2.25 mmHg; 95% CI, -3.40, -1.11; P = 0.0001) and MAP (MD, -3.48 mmHg; 95% CI, -5.84, -1.11; P = 0.004). Aerobic training (AT) did not produce a significant reduction in SBP, DBP and MAP (P >0.05). Combined training (CT) generated larger reductions. Exercise training generated small but clinically relevant reductions in SBP, DBP and MAP in menopausal and postmenopausal women, younger or older than 65 years, with prehypertension or hypertension. AT did not lead to a clinically relevant improvement in blood pressure (BP) in this population. In addition, CT showed the largest reductions in SBP, DBP and MAP.

Abstract
Perimenopause is an important stage of female senescence. Epidemiological investigation has shown that the incidence of cardiovascular disease in premenopausal women is lower than that in men, and the incidence of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women is significantly higher than that in men. This phenomenon reveals that estrogen has a definite protective effect on the cardiovascular system. In the cardiovascular system, oxidative stress is considered important in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, myocardial dysfunction, cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, and myocardial ischemia. From the perspective of oxidative stress, estrogen plays a regulatory role in the cardiovascular system through the estrogen receptor, providing strategies for the treatment of menopausal women with cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Our understanding of platelet functionality has undergone a sea change in the last decade. No longer are platelets viewed simply as regulators of haemostasis; they are now acknowledged to be pivotal in coordinating the inflammatory and immune responses. This expanded role for platelets brings new opportunities for controlling a range of health conditions, targeting platelet activation and their interactions with other vascular cells. Antiplatelet drugs may be of wider utility than ever expected but often cause platelet suppression too strong to be used out of clinical settings. Dietary antiplatelets represent a nutritional approach that can be efficacious while safe for general use. In this review, we discuss potential new uses for dietary antiplatelets outside the field of cardiovascular health, with specific reference to the water-soluble tomato extract Fruitflow®. Its uses in different aspects of inflammation and immune function are discussed, highlighting exercise-induced inflammation, mediating the effects of air pollution, and controlling thrombotic aspects of the immune response. Potential future developments in women’s health, erectile dysfunction, and the allergic response indicate how broad the utility of dietary antiplatelets can be.
