Abstract
BACKGROUND Pharmacy professionals, given their health expertise, can play a role in enhancing health education within their communities and among patients. The potential of the pharmacy workforce to enhance health education among primary school children is underexplored. AIM This study aimed to investigate the perspectives of pharmacy staff on the provision of education regarding self-care and treatment of minor ailments to primary school-aged children and to identify roles that pharmacists could play in this regard. METHOD Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted online with frontline pharmacy staff in the UK who had patient facing roles with primary school-aged children and parents. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic data analysis was applied to the transcripts. RESULTS A total of 17 participants were recruited. Participants included 12 pharmacists, two pharmacy technicians and three pharmacy dispensers. All participants worked within community, hospital or primary care facilities. Five themes emerged from the data analysis: sources of health knowledge accessed by children and parents; a perceived lack of knowledge regarding self-care and treatments for minor ailments among children and parents; a perceived positive impact of education on self-care; barriers to health education; and the potential role of pharmacy staff in self-care education in schools. CONCLUSION Pharmacy staff recognise the value of integrating health education into primary school curricula. A collaborative approach with educational institutions could bridge the gap in knowledge regarding self-care and treatment of minor ailments, and could empower children and reduce unnecessary use of healthcare resources.

Abstract
This research aimed to inform approaches to increase access to secure housing and improve mental health outcomes for migrants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (hereafter migrants) who are generally invisible in health and social policy and service provision in Western Australia. We used semi-structured, in-depth interviews (n = 11) and interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore service provider experiences and perspectives of issues impacting service provision and the needs of migrants in this context. Five superordinate themes reveal complex experiences for both service providers and the migrants with whom they work. Findings reflect tensions between contemporary notions of choice and control and a social service system that is difficult to navigate, reflects systemic racism and appears to rely heavily on the non-government sector. Insights have important and practical implications for health promotion policy, practice and research. Recommendations include improvements to housing access, provision, funding and policies; addressing service barriers via staff training and more accessible community resources; and co-design and community outreach approaches.

Abstract
Introduction The population of older adults is growing disproportionately, constituting 13% of the global population in 2022, and is expected to double by 2050. One of public health's priorities is healthy aging, the maintenance of functional ability aligned with well-being. As many as 50% of older adults report poor sleep quality, leading to an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The quality and quantity of social relationships may broadly benefit sleep in older adults. However, the concept of socially-supported sleep is underdeveloped as a basis for intervention. Methods Existing literature was searched without time restriction in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus ending in August 2022. Thematic analysis was used to determine the defining attributes, antecedents, and consequences of socially-supported sleep guided by Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis. Results Twenty-nine articles written in English, peer-reviewed, and examined social support and sleep in participants aged ≥50 were included. The defining attributes reflect dimensions of sleep quality. The antecedents are safe and secure, belonging and connection, and warmth and comfort. The consequences of socially-supported sleep include improved regulatory capabilities, physical and emotional well-being, and quality of life. Conclusion Socially-supported sleep has the potential to inform interventions that promote sleep in older adults. Ongoing research is needed to address the antecedents and mechanisms through which socially-supported sleep may promote sleep quality for healthy aging.

Abstract
Plain language resources (PLR) are lay summaries of clinical trial results or plain language summaries of publications, in digital/visual/language formats. They aim to provide accurate information in jargon-free, and easy-to-understand language that can meet the health information needs of the general public, especially patients and caregivers. These are typically developed by the study sponsors or investigators, or by national public health bodies, research hospitals, patient organizations, and non-profit organizations. While the usefulness of PLR seems unequivocal, they have never been analyzed from the perspective of ethics. In this commentary, we do so and reflect on whether PLR are categorically advantageous or if they solve certain issues but raise new problems at the same time. Ethical concerns that PLR can potentially address include but are not limited to individual and community level health literacy, patient empowerment and autonomy. We also highlight the ethical issues that PLR may potentially exacerbate, such as fair balanced presentation and interpretation of medical knowledge, positive publication bias, and equitable access to information. PLR are important resources for patients, with promising implications for individual as well as community health. However, they require appropriate oversight and standards to optimize their potential value. Hence, we also highlight recommendations and best practices from our reading of the literature, that aim to minimize these biases.

Abstract
Tinnitus is prevalent among military Veterans, yet there is a gap between the demand and the provision of services for tinnitus rehabilitation services within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). We sought to understand tinnitus rehabilitation service needs and preferences among Veterans with bothersome tinnitus who use Veterans Affairs (VA) services. We conducted semistructured telephone interviews in 2019 with Veterans diagnosed with tinnitus, who reported it as bothersome. Veterans were purposively sampled to represent national VA users, with and without comorbid traumatic brain injury (TBI), and who were or were not interested in tinnitus rehabilitation services. Qualitative data were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach. Among 40 Veterans interviewed (32 men, 8 women; 50% with TBI), 72.5% endorsed being somewhat/very likely to be interested in tinnitus rehabilitation services while 27.5% were very/somewhat unlikely. Themes related to Veterans' interest in tinnitus rehabilitation services included barriers and facilitators to participation and preferences for receiving tinnitus services (e.g., individual vs. group-based; in-person vs. remote access). Our findings highlight factors that influence Veterans' reported need and preferences for, and readiness to engage in, rehabilitation services for tinnitus. Personalized or otherwise adaptable approaches to program delivery may help ensure maximal uptake among Veterans.

Abstract
Introduction Health literacy refers to acquiring and utilizing health information to make health-related actions and decisions. Filipino domestic workers with low health literacy are often vulnerable to health problems due to poor living and working conditions. Objective This study examined the effect of an online health literacy promotion program on health literacy and health knowledge of Filipino domestic workers in Macao. Methods The mixed method combined quantitative findings of a quasi-experimental study with qualitative results applied. The quasi-experiment included three parallel groups: a synchronous online education group (videoconference group), an asynchronous online education group (video group), and a control group. A total of 88 Filipino domestic workers were assigned to one of these groups, and eight respondents participated in two focus-group interviews respectively after the intervention. Results For quantitative data, both synchronous and asynchronous online education interventions had positive effects. While comparing with the control group, participants in the videoconference group were more likely to have better health promotion health literacy after the intervention (β = 5.36, p = .02), and participants in the video group were more likely to have better general health literacy (β = 5.17, p = .01), disease prevention health literacy (β = 5.31, p = .04), health promotion health literacy (β = 5.97, p = .01). For qualitative data, three themes and eight subthemes were extracted after the online health literacy promotion program. After integrating the findings of this study, the study found that this program was essential and beneficial for Filipino domestic workers' health knowledge and health literacy. Conclusion Overall, online health literacy promotion programe had positive impacts on participants revealed in this study. Asynchronous online education has made significant progress in overall health literacy, which may be more suitable as a widely promoted education method because of the characteristics and working conditions of this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schools are important arenas for the promotion of critical health literacy (CHL) among adolescents. Key domains of CHL are information appraisal, understanding social determinants of health, and abilities to act on determinants of health. In this paper, we examine the psychometric properties of the Critical Health Literacy for Adolescents Questionnaire (CHLA-Q). METHODS A cross-sectional survey study was performed at 5 schools in Norway. Respondents included 522 pupils aged 13-15 years old. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine the structural validity. Internal reliability was assessed using ordinal Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS The estimated model had acceptable closeness of fit. Five of 6 scales displayed adequate internal reliability. CONCLUSION The results indicate acceptable fit of the CHLA-Q framework and that 5 of the 6 scales are applicable to inform future research and interventions. More research is needed on measurement of the second domain of CHL.

Abstract
Background The Informed Health Choices (IHC) Key Concepts is a framework that provides a basis for developing educational resources and evaluating people's ability to think critically about health actions. We developed the original Key Concepts framework by reviewing texts and checklists for the public, journalists, and health professionals and collecting structured feedback from an international advisory group. We revised the original 2015 framework yearly from 2016 to 2018 based on feedback and experience using the framework. The objectives of this paper are to describe the development of the framework since 2018 and summarise their basis. Methods For the 2019 version, we responded to feedback on the 2018 version. For the current 2022 version, in addition to responding to feedback on the 2019 version, we reviewed the evidence base for each of the concepts. Whenever possible, we referenced systematic reviews that provide a basis for a concept. We screened all Cochrane methodology reviews and searched Epistemonikos, PubMed, and Google Scholar for methodology reviews and meta-epidemiological studies. Results The original framework included 32 concepts in six groups. The 2019 version and the current 2022 version include 49 concepts in the same three main groups that we have used since 2016. There are now 10 subgroups or higher-level concepts. For each concept, there is an explanation including one or more examples, the basis for the concept, and implications. Over 600 references are cited that support the concepts, and over half of the references are systematic reviews. Conclusions There is a large body of evidence that supports the IHC key concepts and we have received few suggestions for changes since 2019.

Abstract
Health literacy (HL) is an aspect that has been widely studied. However, in the military population there are hardly any studies on the influence of educational variables. Knowing the level of health literacy of military professionals is important as it has an impact on adequate health decision making, avoids the abuse of health services and makes it possible to ask for help when needed, especially in aspects related to mental health. The aim of this study was to measure the level of literacy, as well as its association with other training variables in a sample of military personnel. The study was carried out in 695 military personnel of the Spanish Army. A cross-sectional observational design was used, using a survey with the HLS-EU-Q47 scale. Among the results, it stands out that the level of health literacy of the military is high compared to the rest of the population. The results showed that the level of HL does not seem to be influenced by the level of languages, nor by the degree they hold, nor by experiences abroad. On the other hand, it was observed that the performance of professional internships and work in multidisciplinary teams, extracurricular training, does influence the level of HL, especially in the dimension related to health promotion. This fact seems to mean that the military have learned during these experiences to keep abreast of health-related issues, to understand, to value and to form a considered opinion on health-related information.

Abstract
Background The concept of "positive health" emerged from the need for a holistic and more dynamic perspective on health, emphasising the ability of individuals to adapt and self-manage. The positive health conversation tool helps understand how people score on six positive health dimensions. However, skills within these dimensions to maintain or improve health have not yet been described. This is important for enabling individuals to put health advice into practise. Therefore, this paper aims to define and suggest skills for maintaining and improving positive health. Subsections Suggestions for definitions of skills within the positive health dimensions are described using the functional, interactive, and critical health literacy framework. Additionally, executive functions and life skills were incorporated. Moreover, the environment's role in these individual skills was noted, mentioning organisational health literacy that emphasises organisations' responsibility to provide comprehensible health information to all individuals. We propose that health promotion interventions can incorporate the proposed skills in practical exercises while aligning intervention materials and implementation tools with end-users and implementers. Discussion and conclusion The suggested skills for maintaining and improving positive health are a first step towards a more comprehensive understanding and open to discussion. These skills may also be applied to other practical conversation tools for maintaining or improving health. Increasing positive health through the defined skills may be especially relevant to those with a lower socioeconomic position who also have limited health literacy and thereby may contribute to reducing health inequalities. Taken together, strengthening the defined skills may hopefully contribute to allowing people to flourish in life.

Abstract
AIM To analyze the associations between early childhood education (ECE) teachers´ digital health literacy (DHL) and well-being, and to determine whether the ECE teachers´ interaction with children and family mediated these associations. METHODS A total of 853 early childhood teachers, predominantly women (99.4%) participated in this cross-sectional study. The participants had a mean age of 39.9 years (standard deviation SD = 8.2). Data was collected through an online survey. DHL was assessed using five subscales adapted to the new coronavirus context, and the professionals´ well-being was measured using the WHO-5 well-being scale. Binary logistic regression and mediation analysis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS ECE teachers' DHL in dimensions of "information searching" and "determining relevance" had both direct and indirect effect on their well-being. Specifically, higher DHL in these dimensions was associated with better well-being. The dimension "evaluating reliability" had an indirect positive effect on well-being by promoting interaction with children. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that improving ECE teachers´ DHL could have a positive effect on their well-being and their interactions with children. Therefore, it is recommended to develop health promotion practices aimed at enhancing DHL among ECE teachers. Additionally, integrating DHL contents and competencies more prominently into the qualification, further education and training of ECE teachers may help equip them with the necessary skills to access and apply health information effectively. This, in turn, can enhance interactions with children and contribute to their overall well-being.

Abstract
AIM Analysis of the concept of hypertension literacy to ensure clarity, reduce ambiguities and promote consistency in usage. DESIGN Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was adopted. METHODS Searched four electronic databases using keywords combined with the appropriate Boolean operators. After removing duplicates, thirty titles were identified, and ten articles met the basic criteria for inclusion. The analysis was done using a convergent synthesis design to integrate results and transform them into qualitative descriptions. RESULTS Hypertension literacy's defining attributes were hypertension information search skills, comprehension of numeracy associated with blood pressure and medication and utilization of hypertension prevention information. The identified antecedents were formal education and improved cognitive, social, economic and health-related experiences. Consequences of hypertension literacy included improved self-reported and increased health awareness. Hypertension literacy allows nurses to assess and accurately improve knowledge and facilitate people to adopt prevention behaviours.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suboptimal breastfeeding rates are a public health priority. Interventions that include both breastfeeding women and their co-parents can increase breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity. eHealth can be an effective means of designing such interventions, as parents increasingly use the internet to access health information. The objective of this study was to determine maternal and co-parent satisfaction with an eHealth intervention. METHODS The study was part of a larger randomized controlled trial that took place in Canada between March 2018 and April 2020. Data was collected from mothers (n = 56) and co-parents (n = 47). INTERVENTION The eHealth intervention group received: 1) continued access to an eHealth breastfeeding co-parenting resource from the prenatal period to 52 weeks postpartum; 2) a virtual meeting with a research assistant; and 3) 6 weekly emails reminders. Follow-up data were collected via online questionnaires completed at 2 weeks post enrollment and 4, 12, 26, and 52 weeks postpartum to determine use and satisfaction with the intervention components. FINDINGS The majority of mothers and co-parents independently reviewed the eHealth resource (95% and 91%, respectively), with higher use in the prenatal period. Participants found the resource to be useful (92%), informative (93%), targeted both parents (90%), and easy to understand (97%). Participants indicated the resource was comprehensive, easily navigated, convenient, and engaging. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE Providing mothers and their co-parents with breastfeeding co-parenting support via an eHealth intervention delivers accessible, comprehensive information which may assist them in meeting their breastfeeding goals.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this prospective meta-analysis was to synthesize the results of three cluster-randomized trials of an intervention designed to teach lower-secondary school students (age 14-16) to think critically about health choices. METHODS We conducted the trials in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The intervention included a 2- to 3-day teacher training workshop, digital resources, and ten 40-min lessons. The lessons focused on nine key concepts. We did not intervene in control schools. The primary outcome was a passing score on a test (≥9 of 18 multiple-choice questions answered correctly). We performed random effects meta-analyses to estimate the overall adjusted odds ratios. Secondary outcomes included effects of the intervention on teachers. RESULTS Altogether, 244 schools (11,344 students) took part in the three trials. The overall adjusted odds ratio was 5.5 (95% CI: 3.0-10.2; p < 0.0001) in favor of the intervention (high certainty evidence). This corresponds to 33% (95% CI: 25-40%) more students in the intervention schools passing the test. Overall, 3397 (58%) of 5846 students in intervention schools had a passing score. The overall adjusted odds ratio for teachers was 13.7(95% CI: 4.6-40.4; p < 0.0001), corresponding to 32% (95% CI: 6%-57%) more teachers in the intervention schools passing the test (moderate certainty evidence). Overall, 118 (97%) of 122 teachers in intervention schools had a passing score. CONCLUSIONS The intervention led to a large improvement in the ability of students and teachers to think critically about health choices, but 42% of students in the intervention schools did not achieve a passing score.

Abstract
AIMS This research explores how health care providers determine the mental health needs of immigrant women in the perinatal phase of childbirth. The contextual factors that affect the mental health of these women and influence their engagement with the British Columbian communities in which they reside are investigated. METHOD Using a critical ethnographic approach, eight health care providers were interviewed to gain insight into health care provider's health literacy and immigrant perinatal women's mental health. Each participant was interviewed for 45-60 min in the period from January to February 2021 to obtain relevant data. RESULTS Three themes emerged from the data analysis: the health care provider's role and his/her health literacy, the health literacy of the participant, and the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on the participant's situation. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that a healthy working relationship between the health care provider and an immigrant woman in the perinatal phase of childbirth is essential to facilitate an effective interchange of health information.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Latinos suffer from health disparities associated with excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of messaging using critical health communication approaches and delivered by two narrative modalities (video and comic book) with similar content that aims to empower Latinos to advocate for social change and to make individual behavior change related to sugary beverage consumption. METHODS Participants (N = 129 Mexican American women between 18 and 29 years) completed an online survey before and after exposure to an embedded stimulus. Participants were randomly assigned to a stimulus, a narrative message in video or comic book format, both developed using critical health communication approaches that focused on individual harms and social causes of sugary beverage consumption. RESULTS Paired sample t-test results showed that both narrative messages increased intentions to reduce sugary beverage consumption (Video: P < 0.01; d = 0.43; Comic: P = 0.03; d = 0.28). Both groups also demonstrated significant improvements in sugary beverage-related media literacy (Video: P = 0.01, d = 0.34; Comic: P = 0.05, d = 0.25), public health literacy (Video: P = 0.05, d = 0.24; Comic: P = 0.01, d = 0.32), and empowerment to engage in sugary beverage-related community movements (Video: P = 0.003, d = 0.38; Comic: P = 0.034, d = 0.27). CONCLUSIONS This study provides initial evidence indicating the effectiveness of narrative messages in two modalities using critical health communication for promoting individual behavioral intention and social activation in reducing sugary beverage consumption.

Abstract
Background In Norway, the introduction of an interdisciplinary subject named Public Health and Life skills has brought about renewed attention to how health is conceptualized and taught within and across school subjects. Physical education (PE) is one subject that has traditionally been linked to health outcomes. However, a narrow focus on increased physical activity as the main outcome of PE could be counterproductive in the pursuit of health. Critical health literacy (CHL) is put forward as a resource for health that can be nurtured in the PE context; this study hypothesizes that academic achievement in PE is positively associated with some aspects of CHL. Methods This cross-sectional study included 521 pupils aged 13-15 years old from five lower secondary schools in Norway. Structural equation models were used as the primary statistical analysis to test the hypothesis. The study controlled for parents' education, leisure physical activity, and participation in sports club activities. Results The results confirm the hypothesis, showing a positive and significant association between PE and CHL. The association remains when controlling for parents' education, leisure physical activity, and participation in sports club activities (β^PE→CHL-C1 = 0.264, p = 0.001; β^PE→CHL-C2 = 0.351, p < 0.000). Conclusion In our sample, academic achievement in PE was associated with higher levels of CHL. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on the health benefits of PE. We argue that a resource-based health perspective can produce the appropriate aims for health in PE contexts and that the CHL concept contributes to illuminating key areas, promoting suitable teaching strategies, and bringing balance between an individual and collective focus for future health education, both within PE and across different subjects in school contexts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women have unique health concerns in the context of chronic illness. Although health literacy has been linked to health-related quality of life, the pathway by which some factors mediate this relationship has not been well examined among Saudi women with chronic disease. PURPOSE This study was designed to examine the relationship between health literacy and health-related quality of life and determine the mediating roles of healthy lifestyle and patient-centered care in explaining this relationship. METHODS A cross-sectional study was used. A random sample of 20 primary healthcare centers in Saudi Arabia was selected. A convenience sample of 300 women diagnosed with a chronic illness was recruited from these centers. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed relationships. RESULTS Controlling for women's age and education, the hypothesized model adequately fit the data. Health literacy and its dimensions were found to positively and directly affect both patient-centered care (β = 0.614, B = 0.189, p < .001) and healthy lifestyle behaviors (β = 0.550, B = 1.211, p < .001). Furthermore, both patient-centered care (β = 0.390, B = 1.301, p < .001) and healthy lifestyle behaviors (β = 0.322, B = 0.150, p < .001) were found to positively and directly affect health-related quality of life, whereas health literacy had significant, direct (β = 0.285, B = 0.292, p < .001) and indirect (β = 0.417, B = 0.428, p < .001) effects on health-related quality of life through patient-centered care and healthy lifestyle behaviors. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Special consideration should be given to health literacy, patient-centered care, and healthy lifestyle behaviors to enhance health-related quality of life in women with chronic illness. Gender-specific health services and interventions are needed to improve women's health literacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor functional health literacy has been found to be independently associated with poor self-assessed health, poor understanding of one's health condition and its management, and higher use of health services. Given the importance of functional health literacy, it is necessary to assess the overall status of functional health literacy in the general public. However, the literature review shows that no studies of functional health literacy have been conducted among the Chinese population in China. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to classify Chinese populations into different functional health literacy clusters and ascertain significant factors closely associated with low functional health literacy to provide some implications for health education, medical research, and public health policy making. METHODS We hypothesized that the participants' functional health literacy levels were associated with various demographic characteristics. Therefore, we designed a four-section questionnaire including the following information: (1) age, gender, and education; (2) self-assessed disease knowledge; (3) 3 validated health literacy assessment tools (ie, the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale, the eHealth Literacy Scale, and the 6-item General Health Numeracy Test); and (4) health beliefs and self-confidence measured by the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales Form B. Using randomized sampling, we recruited survey participants from Qilu Hospital affiliated to Shandong University, China. The questionnaire was administered via wenjuanxing. A returned questionnaire was valid only when all question items included were answered, according to our predefined validation criterion. All valid data were coded according to the predefined coding schemes of Likert scales with different point (score) ranges. Finally, we used latent class analysis to classify Chinese populations into clusters of different functional health literacy and identify significant factors closely associated with low functional health literacy. RESULTS All data in the 800 returned questionnaires proved valid according to the predefined validation criterion. Applying latent class analysis, we classified Chinese populations into low (n=292, 36.5%), moderate-to-adequate (n=286, 35.7%), and low-to-moderate (n=222, 27.8%) functional health literacy groups and identified five factors associated with low communicative health literacy: (1) male gender (aged 40-49 years), (2) lower educational attainment (below diploma), (3) age between 38 and 68 years, (4) lower self-efficacy, and (5) belief that staying healthy was a matter of luck. CONCLUSIONS We classified Chinese populations into 3 functional health literacy groups and identified 5 factors associated with low functional health literacy. These associated factors can provide some implications for health education, medical research, and health policy making.

Abstract
Objective: Exploration of the relationship between mental health constructs and physical health constructs can help practitioners better understand the mental health of vulnerable populations, such as college students in the United States. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the connection between mental well-being and health literacy of US college students. Participants: The sample included 410 undergraduate students (63% white; 71% female) attending universities across the United States. Methods: Participants completed the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale. Univariate and bivariate statistics were observed for all study variables, and three linear regression models were run to see whether functional, communicative, and/or critical health literacy scores predicted mental well-being. Conclusions: Findings suggest that health literacy was associated with improved mental well-being among US college students, which has implications for health programming at US universities, such as the coordination of physical and mental healthcare.

Abstract
Health literacy has been identified as a significant predictor of healthcare utilization among refugee and immigrant communities. Considering its potential impact on their health outcomes, accurately measuring levels of health literacy among limited English proficiency (LEP) populations is an important area of investigation. This study examined the psychometric properties of a modified version of the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale (AAHLS), based on Nutbeam's model of health literacy, using an exploratory factor (EFA) and confirmatory factor (CFA) analysis among a sample of Karen refugees, an ethnic minority group from Burma. Results of the EFA confirmed a 3-factor model in our sample. CFA results indicated good model fits, demonstrating a promising use of the AAHLS in assessing health literacy among Karen refugees. The findings of this study support the validity of using this measure among this population and suggest some necessary adjustments to incorporate factors unique to the refugee experience that may affect the interpretation and application of items in the AAHLS. Further replication using other LEP samples is necessary to confirm the psychometric properties of the AAHLS and its ability to assess health literacy using Nutbeam's theoretical model of health literacy.

Abstract
Migrant health-seeking behaviour is understood to be influenced by transnationalism. This paper explores how transnationalism influences health seeking behaviour among Indonesian women living in Perth, Western Australia. Using a participatory action research approach, we conducted five focus groups with 21 women from Indonesia living in Perth. Transnational practices were common amongst Indonesian women. Transnational health-seeking (seeking Indonesian resources in Australia); transnational social support (between countries); and transnational healthcare (return to Indonesia) were common practices amongst Indonesian women. Transnational social networks were a critical source of health information and support. Findings suggest public health interventions may be improved through utilization of transnational social networks.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Most health literacy measures rely on subjective self-assessment. The Critical Thinking about Health Test is an objective measure that includes two multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for each of the nine Informed Health Choices Key Concepts included in the educational resources for secondary schools. The objective of this study was to determine cut-off scores for passing (the border between having and not having a basic understanding and the ability to apply the nine concepts) and mastery (the border between having mastered and not having mastered them). DESIGN Using a combination of two widely used methods: Angoff's and Nedelsky's, a panel judged the likelihood that an individual on the border of passing and another on the border of having mastered the concepts would answer each MCQ correctly. The cut-off scores were determined by summing up the probability of answering each MCQ correctly. Their independent assessments were summarised and discussed. A nominal group technique was used to reach a consensus. SETTING The study was conducted in secondary schools in East Africa. PARTICIPANTS The panel included eight individuals with 5 or more years' experience in the following areas: evaluation of critical thinking interventions, curriculum development, teaching of lower secondary school and evidence-informed decision-making. RESULTS The panel agreed that for a passing score, students had to answer 9 of the 18 questions and for a mastery score, 14 out of 18 questions correctly. CONCLUSION There was wide variation in the judgements made by individual panel members for many of the questions, but they quickly reached a consensus on the cut-off scores after discussions.

Abstract
Due to linguistic and cultural barriers, immigrants often have limited access to health information. Online health information is popular and accessible, but quality is questionable and its benefits dependent on an individual's eHealth literacy. This study examined online health information-seeking behaviours, eHealth literacy and its predictors among first-generation Chinese immigrants. A sample of 356 Chinese immigrants living in Australia completed an anonymous paper-based survey, including sociodemographic, clinical data, English proficiency, health literacy, online health information-seeking behaviours, and eHealth literacy. Linear regression models analyzed predictive factors of eHealth literacy. Participants were aged mean 59.3 years, female (68.3%), 53.1% completed university, and their English proficiency was rated fair/poor by 75.1%. Participants perceived online health information as useful (61.6%) and important (56.2%) to their health. Health information accessed was often related to lifestyle (61.2%), health resources (44.9%), diseases (36.0%), and medications (30.9%). Inadequate health literacy and eHealth literacy occurred in 48.3% and 44.9%, respectively. Age, number of technological devices used, education, and health status were independently associated with eHealth literacy. While most Chinese immigrants used online health information, many had inadequate eHealth literacy. Healthcare authorities and providers should support older immigrants, those with lower education and poorer health, and those less engaged with technology in online health information use by providing culturally and linguistically appropriate information, directing immigrants to credible websites, and involving them in health material development processes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease has been reported in the literature, suggesting that poor glycemic control is strongly associated with increased risk of developing periodontal disease. Therefore, this systematic review evaluated the level of knowledge of this bidirectional relationship among patients with diabetes. METHODS This systematic review (protocol CRD42018117902) was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. The following databases were considered: Medline/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Search strategy (April 05th , 2021) considered proper combination of keywords and eligibility criteria. The quality of studies was evaluated using the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS). RESULTS Among the 328 records identified in the initial search, 24 studies were selected, considering a total of 8,693 patients. All studies used a cross-sectional design. Among the included studies, only five showed prevalence of knowledge higher than 50%, ranging from 5.8% to 75.9%. Interestingly, 58.0% of patients reported that they brush their teeth at least 1x/day, but only four studies reported that the dentist was the main source of information. In terms of methodology and result quality, just one study clearly showed all information evaluated by the AXIS tool. Most of studies did not report sample size calculations and did not used validated questionnaires to assess patient knowledge. CONCLUSION The results show that less than half of people with diabetes have knowledge about their increased risk for periodontal disease, and often the dentist is not the main source of information to motivate them.

Abstract
Introduction Health literacy (HL) refers to an individual's ability to process and use health information to make health-related decisions. However, previous HL scales did not fully cover all aspects of this concept. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive Hong Kong HL scale (HLS-HK) and evaluate its psychometric properties among Chinese adults. Methods A scale of 31-item covering Nutbeam's framework, namely functional and interactive HL (FHL and IHL), and critical HL (CHL) within three subdomains: critical appraisal of information, understanding of social determinants of health, and actions to address social determinants of health, was developed based on previous literature review and Delphi survey. Cognitive interviews were performed to examine all items' face validity in terms of three aspects: comprehensiveness, clarity, and acceptability. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to investigate the scale's psychometric properties, including its internal consistency reliability, factorial structure validity, convergent validity, and predictive validity. Results Nine interviewees participated in the cognitive interviews in October 2021. Based on the input from respondents, two items were deleted, two items were combined, and several items' wording was revised. The other items were clear and readable. Finally, 28 items remained. A total of 433 adults completed the questionnaire survey between December 2021 and February 2022. After excluding one item with low inter-item correlations, the scale's internal consistency reliability was acceptable, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.89. Exploratory factor analysis produced a five-factor model, as shown in the original theoretical framework. These factors accounted for 53% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the fit indices for this model were acceptable (comparative fit index = 0.91, root mean square error of approximation = 0.06, and root mean square residual = 0.06). The scale is also significantly correlated with theoretically selected variables, including education and self-rated health. Conclusion The HLS-HK is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating HL. Compared with existing tools, this scale extended the operationalization of FHL, IHL, and CHL and fully operationalized the CHL via three subdomains. It can be used to understand the difficulties and barriers that people may encounter when they use health-related information and services.

Abstract
Background An adequate level of health literacy will help university students to better respond to public health emergencies and reduce unintended harm caused by public health events. The objective of this study was to assess the health literacy levels of students from Universities of Shaanxi province of China, in order to provide a basis for the development of health literacy promotion plan for university students. Methods An online cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted at five universities in Shaanxi Province of China on the Wen-Juan-Xing online platform. A purposive sampling method was used to 1578 students via self-administered questionnaire. Comparisons of means were made using the t-test and ANOVA, and comparisons of ratios or composition ratios were made using the χ2 test. Results The mean score for health literacy was (105.33±10.14) out of 135, and the mean scores for the three dimensions of health knowledge, attitudes and practices were (36.093±4.192), (34.178±4.227) and (35.059±4.515) respectively. Of the total sample, 39.2% were classified as sufficient in health literacy. Female students had higher health literacy level than male students (t=4.064, p=0.044), lower grade students scored higher than higher grade (F=3.194, p=0.013), students from urban cities scored higher than those who came from rural areas (t=16.376, p<0.001), and university students with health education experience scored higher than those without (t=24.389, p<0.001). Conclusion University students' health literacy is closely related to their gender, grades, family location and health education experience.

Abstract
Summary
Health literacy is a critical asset for adolescents to develop given its positive impact on health outcomes. The few studies that have targeted teacher knowledge and attitudes show that teachers themselves find it difficult to: navigate the multi-modal nature of health information; critically evaluate the different modes and texts; and apply health-related information in a variety of contexts. This research study aimed to address this issue through developing and implementing a teacher professional development (PD) programme for three Australian secondary schools and nine Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers to improve health literacy, particularly critical health literacy, content and pedagogies embedded in current HPE programmes. Fifteen HPE programmes were analysed using Nutbeam’s health literacy hierarchy and the Australian Curriculum: HPE outcomes and content, with this analysis informing a personalized PD programme. To evaluate how teachers experienced the personalized PD programme, interviews conducted at the completion of the PD programme were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic approach. According to the teachers, the PD had improved their knowledge and understanding of the three levels of HL, including how to implement it into their practice. The personalized nature was a key strength of the PD programme as it allowed for changes to be made in a time-efficient manner, a known challenge for teachers. Teachers recommended the provision of additional resources that foster students’ critical health literacy levels and an additional session to ensure sustainable changes in planning and teaching practices.

Abstract
Summary
The objective of this study was to evaluate the criterion validity of the 14-item Health Literacy Scale (HLS-14) in Brazilian adults and older adults. The cross-sectional study performed in an oral health (OH) prospective cohort was conducted in 2017 in Piracicaba, Brazil. The HLS-14 questionnaire was applied to evaluate Health Literacy (HL) by dimensions: Functional literacy (FunL), Communicative literacy (ComL) and Critical literacy (CriL). An evaluation protocol (EP) was proposed to evaluate the criterion validity of HLS-14 considering HL dimensions (FunL: reading of the drug information leaflets; ComL: reading of the medical prescription and CriL: identification of OH conditions). HL (total) was dichotomized by the median in high (≥35 point) or low (<35 point) HL. Kendall’s rank correlation coefficient (p < 0.05) and chi-squared test (p < 0.05) were applied. There was agreement between EP and HLS-14 for FunL (p < 0.01). There was association between high HL, measured through the HLS-14 questionnaire, assessing the reading of the drug information leaflets (p < 0.01) and the need for help to read them (p < 0.01). EP showed association between high HL and being able to read the drug information leaflet (p < 0.01), not needing help to read (p < 0.01), having found in the prescription all the information to take the medicine (p < 0.01) and knowing two or more health and OH information in the educational material (p < 0.01). The HSL-14 questionnaire showed criterion validity to measure FunL, and for some items of ComL and CriL evaluation. HL evaluation in a practical and multidimensional way could have an effect on the communication between health professional and patient, motivation and health outcomes.

Abstract
Public health challenges relating to Covid-19 are highly complex and reasons behind preventive measures can be difficult to understand. Complexity awareness, an important part of healthy literacy, may help young people to understand the situation and act accordingly. However, we could not find any tools to assess complexity awareness during a pandemic in the literature. The purpose of this study was to develop pandemic-specific items to assess complexity awareness and explore relationships with sociodemographic characteristics in university students. Based on critical health literacy concepts and expert knowledge from public health, we developed four survey items, which were answered by 3616 Swiss university students online as part of the COVID-19 International Student Well-Being Study. Relationships between awareness and sociodemographic characteristics were explored using logistic regression and odds ratio (OR). Results showed that 49.6% of the students demonstrated limited and 50.4% demonstrated high complexity awareness. Being female (OR = 1.26; 95% CI 1.07–1.47), having highly educated parents (OR = 1.29; 95% CI 1.06–1.57), and being at a practically oriented university (OR = 0.79; 95% CI 0.64–0.97) was associated with high awareness. Covid-19-related complexity awareness varied significantly among university students, indicating that they have difficulties in dealing with complex information and processes in this pandemic. The results call for action to support students in understanding the complexity of this pandemic and to investigate complexity awareness in the general population.

Abstract
Background The assessment of patients’ medication literacy skills (i.e., abilities to access, comprehend and interact with medication-related information) is an important step in assisting clinicians to plan for appropriate care. Despite several attempts by researchers to develop measures of medication literacy, an instrument tailored to the specific needs of older adults remains a significant shortfall. Therefore, an interprofessional team that included a citizen co-researcher conceptualized a new standardised measure of medication literacy—the MEDedication Literacy Assessment of Geriatric patients and informal caregivers (MED-fLAG). MED-fLAG was designed as a three-dimensional self-reported measure of functional, interactive and critical skills. This study describes the conceptualization process and provides the results of an evaluation of MED-fLAG’s content validity, acceptability, and feasibility during a hospital stay. Methods MED-fLAG was developed in accordance with the guidance on scale development and standards for good content validity, by using the following steps: (I) conceptualization of a provisional version of MED-fLAG; (II) iterative qualitative evaluation of its content validity by older adults, informal caregivers and healthcare professionals. Results The qualitative assessment of the initial 54-item MED-fLAG was conducted in 36 participants, namely 13 home-dwelling older adults and/or informal caregivers and 23 healthcare professionals. Six rounds of revisions were performed to achieve content validity and to propose a 56-item revised MED-fLAG. Participants reported benefits of using a standardized assessment of medication literacy during a hospital stay but warned about certain limitations and prerequisites. The extent to which MED-fLAG could be integrated into discharge planning needs to be further investigated. Conclusions MED-fLAG is the first medication literacy measure tailored to the specific needs of older patients and informal caregivers. A unique feature of this measure is that it includes prescribed and non-prescribed medications, irrespective of the galenic form. Additional studies are required to evaluate the other measurement properties of MED-fLAG, and to reduce the number of items before considering its clinical application. On the basis of what has been written about medication literacy and the experiences of experts, we developed a new questionnaire to measure medication literacy (MED-fLAG) in older adults and/or informal caregivers. MED-fLAG was then submitted to older adults, informal caregivers and healthcare professionals to retrieve their feedback concerning the relevance, comprehensibility and exhaustiveness of the proposed items. In future, MED-fLAG will allow health professionals to evaluate medication literacy skills in older patients during hospitalization and/or in their informal caregivers when they are responsible for preparing or administering the medications, and then propose individualised support.

Abstract
Health literacy research is growing rapidly and broadly; however, conceptual advances in critical health literacy (CHL) seem hampered by a lack of a clear definition. In this paper, we refer to key features of the concept as identified in earlier works, offer a new definition of CHL and briefly discuss its theoretical roots. Reflection and action are suggested as the two constituent components of CHL. Consequences for future research are also discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study explored self-reported knowledge and interest to learn more about medicines research, development and health technology assessment among Finnish general public. It also aimed to define possible knowledge gaps and needs for public education regarding these topics. DESIGN Online survey with 503 participants. The questionnaire was originally developed as a part of the Needs Assessment Work Package of the European Patients' Academy on Therapeutic Innovation Project. The survey was carried out in Finland in 2019. METHODS The survey was conducted as an online survey by Kantar TNS Gallup Forum online panel. The data were analysed by using the freely available programming language R. Relationships between the demographic characteristics (such as age, gender and education level) of respondents and their knowledge or interest in medicines research and development were determined using Pearson's χ2 tests. Statistically significant responses of demographic characteristics in the respondents' knowledge or interest in medicines research were determined by logistic regression. RESULTS Of the 503 respondents (age 16-64) only 12% reported having good or very good knowledge of medicines research and development in general. Regarding health technology assessment, pharmacoeconomics and regulation, the percentage of respondents reporting good or very good knowledge was as low as 8%. Respondents were most interested in learning more about predictive and personalised medicine (47%) and least interested in medicines regulation (30%) and pharmacoeconomics (31%). CONCLUSIONS Self-reported knowledge about medicines research and development and health technology assessment appears to be very low in Finland. Patient and public participation is recognised as an important and essential element in up-to-date medical research and assessment of new treatments. In order to participate as an active and equal partner in these processes, the public needs more information and education in these topics.

Abstract
The strategic use of media is a common approach to promote health. A large body of evidence identifies specific features that increase message efficacy, including tailoring messages to the target audience and using a storytelling format. Yet most message testing research has focused on individual-level outcomes, ignoring the social and environmental determinants of health behaviors, which require collective action and political will to change. Grounded in an ecological approach to communication, we will carry out two double-blinded randomized experiments to test the relative effectiveness of message tailoring (culturally-tailored vs. standard) and format (narrative vs. didactic) to increase the intention to reduce individual sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, the understanding of social and commercial determinants of health, and the sense of empowerment among young adult Latinas. Based on power analyses (80% power at alpha = 0.05), we will randomize 438 participants to two groups (traditional standard infographic and culturally-tailored infographic) in the first study, and 662 participants to two groups (culturally-tailored infographic and culturally-tailored comic book) in the second study. All participants will be measured by a pre-treatment test and an immediate post-treatment test. We hypothesize that culturally-tailored comic book will be most effective, and traditional standard infographic will be least effective, on all levels of outcomes. This study will provide empirical evidence in communication strategies to help young Latinos or other racial/ethnic minority young people to pursue positive dietary behaviors that both benefit themselves and contribute to change of social norms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy (HL) is implicated in improved health decision-making and health promotion, and reduced racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health disparities. Three major areas of HL include functional, interactive, and critical HL. HL skills develop throughout the lifespan as individuals' psychosocial and cognitive capacities develop and as they accumulate experiences with navigating health systems. Though adolescence is marked by increased involvement in health decision-making, most HL studies and measures of HL have focused on adults. Both the adult and adolescent HL literature are also limited by the paucity of validated test-based measures for assessing HL. The existing test-based validated HL measures for adolescents were originally designed for adults. However, adolescents are at an earlier phase of developing their HL skills (e.g., fewer experiences navigating the health system) compared to adults and measures originally designed for adults may assume prior knowledge that adolescents may lack therein underestimating adolescents' HL. This study developed and validated test-based assessments of adolescents' functional, interactive, and critical HL. METHODS Items were generated in an iterative process: focus groups with adolescents informed item content, cognitive interviews with adolescents and expert consultation established content and face validity of the initial items, and items were revised or removed where indicated. High school students (n = 355) completed a measurement battery including the revised HL items. The items were evaluated and validated using Rasch measurement models. RESULTS The final 6-item functional, 10-item interactive, and 7-item critical HL assessments and their composite (23 items) fit their respective Rasch models. Item-level invariance was established for gender (male vs. female), age (12-15-year-olds vs. 16-18-year-olds), and ethnicity in all assessments. The assessments had good convergent validity with an established measure of functional HL and scores on the assessments were positively related to reading instructions before taking medicine and questioning the truthfulness of health information found online. CONCLUSIONS These assessments are the first test-based measures of adolescents' interactive and critical HL, the first test-based measure of functional HL designed for adolescents, and the first composite test-based assessment of all three major areas of HL. These assessments should be used to inform strategies for improving adolescents' HL, decision-making, and behaviors.

Abstract
A critical health literacy (CHL) approach is recommended for promoting health in the school context. This construct is complex and includes three interconnected domains: (A) appraisal of critical information, (B) awareness of the social determinants of health (SDH), and (C) collective action to promote health and well-being. In recent literature reviews, no measurement instrument that covers all three domains of CHL in the school-context was found. Our aim was to develop self-reported measurement scales for each domain of CHL. The development process reported in this study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, an initial item pool was generated based on literature reviews and focus group interviews (N = 15) with adolescents (steps 1–2). In the next steps, items were adjusted and removed based on the feedback from an expert panel and from representatives from the target group (steps 3–5). In stage two, we aimed to reduce the number of items and develop scales for each domain. We then piloted the current draft, which consists of 28 items (N = 114). A sub-sample (N = 10) of the participants were interviewed after they completed the survey to examine the instrument’s face validity. Cronbach’s α was used to assess the internal reliability of the scales; the reliability was promising for scales A (α = 0.83) and C (α = 0.85) but was below the recommended value for scale B (α = 0.61). The model fit indices were promising (TLIscaleA = 0.97, RSMEAscaleA = 0.055, TLIscaleB = 1.05, RMSEAscaleB = 0.00, TLIscaleC = 0.95, RMSEAscaleC = 0.074). The piloted version of scales A and C were positively correlated with subjective health literacy, health-related quality of life, and subjective health; however, we found no such correlations for scale B. The post-survey group interviews led to some adjustments in scales A and B. The revised version of CHLA-Q must be tested using a larger sample; this will enable more robust statistical testing of the properties of the items and the scale.

Abstract
The relationship between education and health is well-established. The empirical literature finds that individuals with higher levels of education experience lower risks of poor health outcomes compared to individuals with less education. Outstanding to this literature is the examination of a dimension of education – literacy – and its association with health. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between literacy (reading, numeracy) and health (self-reported health). We use data from the 2012 wave of the Canadian Longitudinal International Survey of Adults (LISA). The LISA includes rich information on health, broader sociodemographic characteristics (income, age, sex, etc.) as well as information on literacy skills from the Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Using logistic regression, we first reaffirm the association between education and self-reported health. We then find that after controlling for measures of literacy, understood as proficiency in reading and numeracy, the magnitude of effect of education on health is reduced. Skills in literacy reduce the risk of reporting poor health, but only for the older subset of respondents (ages 40–65). Our results suggest that literacy should not be understated in empirical research on education and health, and in fact serve to sharpen our understanding of how education impacts health by drawing attention to indirect pathways. Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel virus in the coronavirus family, causing the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Biomedical vaccines are key but alongside biomedical vaccines, a social vaccine can be similarly useful to prevent infection from SARS-CoV-2, if applied as a health promotion strategy. In order to slow down and control the spread of SARS-CoV-2, applying the social vaccine concept should be considered in parallel. From a health promotion perspective, a social vaccine is a process of social and political mobilization driven by governmental and non-governmental organizations aiming at populations by applying interventions such as health communication, education and mass media campaigns as well as determinant-based programs to address environmental factors influencing personal behavior and community capacities to cope with and overcome the societal burdens of COVID-19. In this context, health literacy is significant, as seen in the role it plays in empowering citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic and enabling them to deal with health information considering COVID-19. As a public health strategy, health literacy as a social vaccine will enable individuals and communities to mitigate the spread of the virus by understanding and applying information as provided through governments and health authorities. The aim of this article is to explore health literacy as a promising social vaccine and opportunity to utilize social vaccination and thus be considered as a key public health approach—both bottom-up and top-down—to support the combat of COVID-19 and future states of emergency.

Abstract
The functional, interactive, and critical domains of health literacy are associated with health. However, studies examining the relationship between health literacy subdomains and health in the Chinese-speaking context are still limited. Thus, we aimed to examine the association of functional, interactive, and critical health literacy with self-rated health among older Taiwanese adults. A total of 1,072 participants aged 60 or older were included in the analysis. Health literacy was measured by the 11-item short-form Mandarin Health Literacy Scale and validated tools. Self-rated health was categorized into good (good/very good), fair, and poor (poor/very poor) status. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that only interactive health literacy was associated with reporting good health status (OR = 2.30; 95% CI = 1.65 to 3.21). Conversely, all health literacy subdomains were not associated with reporting poor health. This study suggested that interactive health literacy was the key determinant of good self-rated health status for community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Information forms one of the main commonalities shared between definitions of health literacy. However, information literacy research, which centres how people become informed within a specific setting, has been almost completely sidelined from health literacy scholarship. This oversight risks limiting understanding of how health literacy is practised as well as narrowing research discourses. It also forms a missed opportunity as the recent sociocultural turn creates a valuable point of synergy between each field. This paper carries out a narrative literature review to identify key areas where information literacy research could help to extend understanding about how people interact with information within health contexts. Centred on exploring theoretical and empirical work, the paper uses examples from literature to suggest that assumptions related to how information, models of information use, social dynamics of information environments, the outcomes of information activity and critical approaches to information practice are understood impact the scope and the reach of health literacy research and practice. The goal of this paper is to establish an initial, shared research agenda that places health and information literacy in dialogue rather than in isolation from each other.

Abstract
In the current COVID-19 pandemic the active participation of the public is of central importance, however, certain factors found in this new pandemic disease complicates the participation. Addressing these complications needs public health and health promotion experts to understand the role of critical health literacy in a pandemic. We present the case for a definition of critical health literacy in a pandemic, CHL-P. We suggest that CHL-P can help professionals to support individuals and communities as agents for effectively dealing with the unique features of this pandemic.

Abstract
Research in health literacy is fundamentally impacted by our ability to adequately assess the construct. Although various measures of health literacy have been developed, there are few reflective discussions of the challenges and learnings from the instrument development process. This is somewhat surprising given that health literacy is a multi-dimensional and contested concept (with inherent measurement challenges), and that there are important practical considerations owing to the fact that people completing health literacy assessments may have lower general literacy (i.e. ability to read and write) and English-language skills. This paper discusses our learnings from developing a performance-based measure of parenting health literacy skills (the Parenting Plus Skills Index). The performance-based instrument is characterised by its grounding in health literacy as asset, with items spanning Nutbeam's functional, communicative and critical health literacy skills, and was designed chiefly to capture improvements resulting from health literacy skills training. This paper elucidates critical junctures in the development process, particularly regarding the conceptualisation and operationalisation of the construct. We also outline our approach to addressing practical measurement issues (e.g. administration time; item difficulty). In summarising these, we offer a 13-item checklist to inform the development of health literacy instruments for other health contexts or health conditions.

Abstract
The relationship between health literacy and adherence has been described in medical literature, especially for patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, the relevance that an individual's local context can have has not been considered. This study aimed to examine the association of both concepts at a population level and estimate the correlation between health literacy and adherence to pharmacological treatment in adults from 14 districts in different regions in Chile. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 14 districts from 3 different regions of Chile. Sampling was carried out by volunteers. Three questionnaires were applied: sociodemographic; Morisky-Green-Levine (MMAS-4) and the Short Assessment of Health Literacy for Spanish Adults test (SAHLSA-50). Data were analyzed descriptively, and a Multilevel Poisson Regression model was fitted to evaluate the relationship between health literacy and adherence to pharmacological treatment, considering the districts as fixed intercepts. A total of 1,336 persons were surveyed; 811 self-reported as having at least 1 NCD. A 83.4% had adequate literacy and 37.1% were adherent to pharmacological treatment, regardless of their health literacy. A 3.6% (variance partition coefficient = 0.036) correlation of adherence to treatment was observed in respondents living in the same district. Those with inadequate health literacy had a 12% greater prevalence of being non-adherent (prevalence ratio 1.12; IC 95% 0.87 - 1.47) when adjusting for individual variables. These results could suggest that the individual's local context does not influence the relation of functional health literacy and adherence to pharmacological treatment in populations with basic and intermediate levels of education. We suggest further studies in this matter.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood is a critical period for developing food-related skills and knowledge, known as food literacy (FL). Schools may be an important setting for interventions aiming to improve FL in children. This systematic scoping review aimed to characterize food literacy interventions in elementary schools. METHODS Databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO) were searched for FL interventions in elementary schools (students aged 4-12 years). Studies were assessed according to design, duration, theoretical underpinning, and ascertainment of FL outcome(s). Interventions were assessed according to FL competencies (functional, interactive, and critical). RESULTS After exclusions, 116 studies were eligible for review, including 105 original interventions. Interventions ranged from 45 minutes to 4 years. Social cognitive theory was the most referenced theory and common interventions included; classroom lessons, games, school gardens, food preparation, and cooking classes. Most studies measured FL outcomes quantitatively (96%, N = 111). All studies addressed functional FL (N = 116), while 77% (N = 89) addressed interactive FL and 28% (N = 32) addressed critical FL. CONCLUSIONS This first international review of FL programs in elementary schools found great heterogeneity in school-based FL intervention design and measurement of FL. Few interventions addressed critical FL, which should be a focus for future interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Health literacy has been associated with pain intensity and pain control. However, there is a paucity of evidence regarding this association. In the field of low back pain research, inconsistent reporting of outcomes has been highlighted. To address this issue a Core Outcome Set has been developed. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this scoping review were: (1) The health literacy measures currently employed for low back pain and the aspects of health literacy they include. (2) The low back pain health outcomes included in such work. (3) The extent to which these health outcomes reflect the Core Outcome Set for Clinical Trials in Non-Specific Low Back Pain. METHODS The search included thirteen bibliographic databases, using medical subject heading terms for low back pain and health literacy, and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. The eligibility criteria were defined by the Joanna Briggs Institute PCC mnemonic. A thematic framework approach was used for analysis. RESULTS The search yielded ten relevant studies for inclusion, amongst which a total of nine health literacy measures and 50 health outcome measures were used. Most health literacy measures focused on functional health literacy, with few assessing communicative and critical health literacy. The health outcomes assessed by the included studies could be broadly categorised into: Pain, Disability, Behaviour, Knowledge and Beliefs, and Resource Utilisation. Most of these outcome measures studied (36 out of 50) did not directly reflect the Core Outcome Set for Clinical Trials in Non-Specific Low Back Pain. CONCLUSIONS To allow for comparison across findings and the development of a rigorous evidence base, future work should include the Core Outcome Set for Clinical Trials in Non-Specific Low Back Pain. There is an urgent need to broaden the evidence-base to include regions where low back pain morbidity is high, but data is lacking. Such work demands the incorporation of comprehensive measures of health literacy that have both generic and culturally sensitive components.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore health literacy and community engagement in relation to active living with newcomer young people and their families. We employed a case study design and a participatory approach. The data collected included photovoice and photo-assisted focus group interviews, which included an initial stage when youth participated in workshops creating collages on healthy living. A follow-up focus group centred on discussion of the collages with subsequent training on the photovoice method and the use of the cameras, and a second focus group, which incorporated photos taken by participants during the programming and their leisure time. Different themes were developed from the data: active living, balance, body talk, challenges, environment and health, culture and health, family, health and food, health and safety, knowledge, source of knowledge, peers and friends, personal hygiene, recreational activities, socio-emotional health, social isolation and spiritual health. Excerpts were taken from the different themes to demonstrate the immigrant/refugee youths' understanding of levels of health literacy and its contribution to healthy eating and active living. The qualitative findings are presented under the different tenets of health literacy. Health literacy extends beyond the individual level and effects the whole family and communities; intervention need to extend to include community connections and involvement activities. Future research needs to focus on the long-term effects of critical health literacy among immigrant communities.

Abstract
Objectives: The recent health crisis has led to a tightening of visitor policies during medical consultations. This work studies the relationship between the companion's health literacy (functional, interactive, and critical) and the companion's co-creation of value (co-production and value in use). Methods: Six hypotheses are tested by means of a sample of companions of chronically ill patients over the age of 65, using structural equation modeling. Results: Functional literacy does not predict the co-creation of value through either of its dimensions (co-production and value in use). Interactive literacy has a positive influence on co-production and a negative influence on value in use. Critical literacy only positively influences value in use. Discussion: Merely understanding the health information is not sufficient for the companion to be recognized as a collaborator or "ally" of the doctor. It is necessary to encourage the companion's communication and critical evaluation skills.
