Abstract
The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), a gonochoristic teleost fish with a XX/XY sex-determination system, is an ideal model for investigating gonadal sex differentiation. During gonadal differentiation, the expression of cyp19a1a in XX gonads and dmrt1 in XY gonads are required for undifferentiated tissues to develop into ovary or testis. In this study, quantitative real-time RT-PCR assessed the expression of cyp19a1a and dmrt1 genes in gonads and tail fin tissues. Differences in gene expression mean among sexually differentiated fish were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and validation of mixed model using discriminant analysis (DA) for morphometric traits and the gene expression in gonads and tail fin tissues used to validate and utilize them in discriminating sexes in sex-differentiated Nile Tilapia fish. The results revealed that, cyp19a1a gene expression in female ovaries was more significant than dmrt1 in male testis. In the other hand, the dmrt1 gene expression in the tail fin was higher in males than females. Both, cyp19a1a and dmrt1 genes, can discriminate fish sexes by 100% by using their expression in tail fin tissues. In conclusion, the cyp19a1a and dmrt1 genes could be used as a genetic marker to discriminate between the Nile Tilapia sexes, whereas used as an indicator for ovarian or testis differentiation in sexually differentiated Nile Tilapia using tail fin tissues. It is worth mentioning that this is the first investigation for using cyp19a1a and dmrt1 genes from Nile Tilapia tail fin tissues in sex determination.

Abstract
This study is the first investigation for using sex-related gene expression in tail fin tissues of seabass as early sex determination without killing the fish. The European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is gonochoristic and lacks distinguishable sex chromosomes, so, sex determination is referred to molecular actions for some sex-related genes on autosomal chromosomes which are well known such as cyp19a1a, dmrt1a, and dmrt1b genes which play crucial role in gonads development and sex differentiation. cyp19a1a is expressed highly in females for ovarian development and dmrt1a and dmrt1b are for testis development in males. In this study, we evaluated the difference in the gene expression levels of studied genes by qPCR in tail fins and gonads. We then performed discriminant analysis (DA) using morphometric traits and studied gene expression parameters as predictor tools for fish sex. The results revealed that cyp19a1a gene expression was significantly higher in future females' gonads and tail fins (p ≥ 0.05). Statistically, cyp19a1a gene expression was the best parameter to discriminate sex even the hit rate of any other variable by itself could not correctly classify 100% of the fish sex except when it was used in combination with cyp19a1a. In contrast, Dmrt1a gene expression was higher in males than females but there were difficulties in analyzing dmrt1a and dmrt1b expressions in the tail because levels were low. So, it could be used in future research to differentiate and determine the sex of adult fish using the cyp19a1a gene expression marker without killing or sacrificing fish.

Abstract
Gestagens are common pollutants accumulated in the aquatic ecosystem. Gestagens are comprised of natural gestagens (i.e. progesterone) and synthetic gestagens (i.e. progestins). The major contributors of gestagens in the environment are paper plant mill effluent, wastewater treatment plants, discharge from pharmaceutical manufacturing, and livestock farming. Gestagens present in the aquatic environment interact with progesterone receptors and other steroid hormone receptors, negatively influencing fish reproduction, development, and behavior. In fish, the gonadotropin induces 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) production, an important steroid hormone involved in gametogenesis. DHP interacts with the membrane progestin receptor (mPR), which regulates sperm motility and oocyte maturation. Gestagens also interfere with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which results in altered hormone levels in fish. Moreover, recent studies showed that even at low concentrations exposure to gestagens can have detrimental effects on fish reproduction, including reduced egg production, masculinization, feminization in males, and altered sex ratio, raising concerns about their impact on the fish population. This review highlights the hormonal regulation of sperm motility, oocyte maturation, the concentration of environmental gestagens in the aquatic environment, and their detrimental effects on fish reproduction. However, the long-term and combined impacts of multiple gestagens, including their interactions with other pollutants on fish populations and ecosystems are not well understood. The lack of standardized regulations and monitoring protocols for gestagens pollution in wastewater effluent hampers effective control and management. Nonetheless, advancements in analytical techniques and biomonitoring methods provide potential solutions by enabling better detection and quantification of gestagens in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
Post-operative pericardial adhesions remain a serious complication after cardiac surgery that can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Fibrous adhesions can destroy tissue planes leading to injury of surrounding vasculature, lengthening of operation time, and increased healthcare costs. While animal models are necessary for studying the formation and prevention of post-operative pericardial adhesions, a standardized animal model for inducing post-operative pericardial adhesions has not yet been established. In order to address this barrier to progress, an analysis of the literature on animal models for post-operative pericardial adhesions was performed. The animal model, method used to induce adhesions, and the time to allow development of adhesions were analyzed. Our analysis found that introduction of autologous blood into the pericardial cavity in addition to physical abrasion of the epicardium caused more severe adhesion formation in comparison to abrasion alone or abrasion with desiccation (vs. abrasion alone p = 0.0002; vs. abrasion and desiccation p = 0.0184). The most common time frame allowed for adhesion formation was 2 weeks, with the shortest time being 10 days and the longest being 12 months. Finally, we found that the difference in adhesion severity in all animal species was similar, suggesting the major determinants for the choice of model are animal size, animal cost, and the availability of research tools in the particular model. This survey of the literature provides a rational guide for researchers to select the appropriate adhesion induction modality, animal model, and time allowed for the development of adhesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Among the world's finest natural fiber composites is derived from the secondary hair follicles (SHFs) of cashmere goats yield one of the world's best natural fibres. Their development and cycling are characterized by photoperiodism with diverse, well-orchestrated stimulatory and inhibitory signals. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNAs) and mRNAs play important roles in hair follicle (HF) development. However, not many studies have explored their specific functions in cashmere development and cycling. This study detected mRNAs and lncRNAs with their candidate genes and related pathways in SHF development and cycling of cashmere goat. We utilized RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and bioinformatics analysis on lncRNA and mRNA expressions in goat hair follicles to discover candidate genes and metabolic pathways that could affect development and cycling (anagen, catagen, and telogen). RESULTS We identified 228 differentially expressed (DE) mRNAs and 256 DE lncRNA. For mRNAs, catagen and anagen had 16 upregulated and 35 downregulated DEGs, catagen and telogen had 18 upregulated and 9 downregulated DEGs and telogen and anagen had 52 upregulated and 98 downregulated DEGs. LncRNA witnessed 22 upregulated and 39 downregulated DEGs for catagen and anagen, 36 upregulated and 29 downregulated DEGs for catagen and telogen as well as 66 upregulated and 97 downregulated DEGs for telogen and anagen. Several key genes, including MSTRG.5451.2, MSTRG.45465.3, MSTRG.11609.2, CHST1, SH3BP4, CDKN1A, GAREM1, GSK-3β, DEFB103A KRTAP9-2, YAP1, S100A7A, FA2H, LOC102190037, LOC102179090, LOC102173866, KRT2, KRT39, FAM167A, FAT4 and EGFL6 were shown to be potentially important in hair follicle development and cycling. They were related to, WNT/β-catenin, mTORC1, ERK/MAPK, Hedgehog, TGFβ, NFkB/p38MAPK, caspase-1, and interleukin (IL)-1a signaling pathways. CONCLUSION This work adds to existing understanding of the regulation of HF development and cycling in cashmere goats via lncRNAs and mRNAs. It also serves as theoretical foundation for future SHF research in cashmere goats.

Abstract
Male infertility refers to the inability to conceive a natural pregnancy in a fertile female, and approximately 15% of reproductive‐aged couples worldwide face this problem. Several plants were used to treat fertility disorders and, among them, Lepidium meyenii, a folk medicament of Andean regions, is still used to enhance vitality and treat sterility in humans and domestic animals. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of L. meyenii Walpers on infertile patients by a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial. Fifty patients suffering from various reproductive‐related problems were enrolled for 16 weeks to evaluate the effect of yellow maca on semen quality and serum hormone levels. Treatment with maca improved the percentage of sperm concentration by 40%, whereas the placebo improved by 76% after 8 and 16 weeks of treatment, but the results were statistically non‐significant. No statistically significant change in hormone levels was reported by using maca, except a decrease in the level of free testosterone. Results are not sufficient to assess the efficacy of maca on male fertility. Further investigation and trials are required to obtain conclusive results.

Abstract
Intraperitoneal adhesions complicate over half of abdominal-pelvic surgeries with immediate, short, and long-term sequelae of major healthcare concern. The pathogenesis of adhesion development is similar to the pathogenesis of wound healing in all tissues, which if unchecked result in production of fibrotic conditions. Given the similarities, we explore the published literature to highlight the similarities in the pathogenesis of intra-abdominal adhesion development (IPAD) and other fibrotic diseases such as keloids, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and pulmonary, intraperitoneal, and retroperitoneal fibrosis. Following a literature search using PubMed database for all relevant English language articles up to November 2020, we reviewed relevant articles addressing the genetic and epidemiological similarities and differences in the pathogenesis and pathobiology of fibrotic diseases. We found genetic and epidemiological similarities and differences between the pathobiology of postoperative IPAD and other diseases that involve altered fibroblast-derived cells. We also found several genes and single nucleotide polymorphisms that are up- or downregulated and whose products directly or indirectly increase the propensity for postoperative adhesion development and other fibrotic diseases. An understanding of the similarities in pathophysiology of adhesion development and other fibrotic diseases contributes to a greater understanding of IPAD and these disease processes. At a very fundamental level, blocking changes in the expression or function of genes necessary for the transformation of normal to altered fibroblasts may curtail adhesion formation and other fibrotic disease since this is a prerequisite for their development. Similarly, applying measures to induce apoptosis of altered fibroblast may do the same; however, apoptosis should be at a desired level to simultaneously ameliorate development of fibrotic diseases while allowing for normal healing. Scientists may use such information to develop pharmacologic interventions for those most at risk for developing these fibrotic conditions.

Abstract
Post-surgical adhesions are common in almost all surgical areas and are associated with significant rates of morbidity, mortality, and increased healthcare costs, especially when a patient requires repeat operative interventions. Many groups have studied the mechanisms driving post-surgical adhesion formation. Despite continued advancements, we are yet to identify a prevailing mechanism. It is highly likely that post-operative adhesions have a multifactorial etiology. This complex pathophysiology, coupled with our incomplete understanding of the underlying pathways, has resulted in therapeutic options that have failed to demonstrate safety and efficacy on a consistent basis. The translation of findings from basic and preclinical research into robust clinical trials has also remained elusive. Herein, we present and contextualize the latest findings surrounding mechanisms that have been implicated in post-surgical adhesion formation.

Abstract
Polyhydramnios is a common feature diagnosed by ultrasound in the second half of pregnancy. Biochemical analysis of amniotic fluid can be useful when suspecting Bartter syndrome or digestive atresia but in most of cases, no etiology of polyhydramnios is found because of the complex regulation of amniotic fluid. Aquaporins (AQP) are transmembrane channel proteins contributing to water transfers. Some of them are expressed in fetal membranes and placenta. Their expression has been shown to be disrupted in some pathological conditions such as maternal diabetes, often associated with polyhydramnios. AQP-1, 3 and 8 levels in amniotic fluid were retrospectively measured in patients suffering from polyhydramnios (n=21) from 23 weeks of gestation (WG). They were compared to the levels observed in control subjects (n=96) and their relationship with maternal factors and neonatal issues was analyzed. AQP-1, 3, 8 levels were physiologically fluctuating, AQP-1 levels always being the lowest and AQP-3 the highest, with a significant decrease at the end of pregnancy. AQPs/AFP ratios increased about 8 folds during pregnancy, their kinetic profiles reflecting physiological dynamic evolution of amniotic fluid volume. In polyhydramnios, AQP-3 level tended to be decreased whereas AQP-8 level was decreased from mid-gestation whatever the etiology of polyhydramnios. No significant relationship was found between AQPs levels and either the fetal prematurity degree or macrosomia. No specific pattern was observed in idiopathic polyhydramnios, limiting the interest of AQPs dosage in amniotic fluid in the management of those complicated pregnancies.

Abstract
Post-surgical adhesions are internal scar tissue and a major health and economic burden. Adhesions affect and involve the peritoneal lining of the abdominal cavity, which consists of a continuous mesothelial covering of the cavity wall and majority of internal organs. Our understanding of the full pathophysiology of adhesion formation is limited by the fact that the mechanisms regulating normal serosal repair and regeneration of the mesothelial layer are still being elucidated. Emerging evidence suggests that mesothelial cells do not simply form a passive barrier but perform a wide range of important regulatory functions including maintaining a healthy peritoneal homeostasis as well as orchestrating events leading to normal repair or pathological outcomes following injury. Here, we summarise recent advances in our understanding of serosal repair and adhesion formation with an emphasis on molecular mechanisms and novel gene expression signatures associated with these processes. We discuss changes in mesothelial biomolecular marker expression during peritoneal development, which may help, in part, to explain findings in adults from lineage tracing studies using experimental adhesion models. Lastly, we highlight examples of where local tissue specialisation may determine a particular response of peritoneal cells to injury.

Abstract
A physical barrier is one of the most effective strategies to alleviate excessive postoperative adhesion (POA) between tissues at an injury site. To overcome the limitations of current polymeric film-type physical barriers, we suggest a film of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) that is non-covalently coated with poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-co-n-butyl methacrylate (BMA)) (PMB). While maintaining the degradability and mechanical properties of PLGA, the PMB coating introduces strong anti-adhesive properties to the film by forming a zwitterionic MPC-based surface through the hydrophobic interactions between BMA moieties and PLGA. Compared to SurgiWrap®, the commercially available poly(lactic acid)-based anti-adhesive film against POA, the PMB-coated PLGA film is much more inhibitory against protein adsorption and fibroblast adhesion, processes that are crucial to the POA process. PMB coating also inhibits the expression of fibronectin containing extra domain A (FN-EDA), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and collagen type IV alpha 2 (COL4A2), which are marker genes and proteins involved in fibroblast activation and excessive fibrosis during POA. Such inhibitory activities are clearly observed in a 3-dimensional culture of fibroblasts within a collagen matrix, which mimics the in vivo environment of an injury site, as well as in a 2-dimensional culture. The kinetics and the stability of the PMB coating suggest potential future clinical use to coat PLGA films to create a film-type anti-adhesion barrier that overcomes the limitations of current products.

Abstract
Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is a prevalent incidence that generally happens during the healing process of traumatized tissues. It causes multiple severe complications such as intestinal obstruction, chronic abdominal pain, and female infertility. To prevent PPA, several antiadhesion materials and drug delivery systems composed of biomaterials are used clinically, and clinical antiadhesive is one of the important applications nowadays. In addition to several commercially available materials, like film, spray, injectable hydrogel, powder, or solution type have been energetically studied based on natural and synthetic biomaterials such as alginate, hyaluronan, cellulose, starch, chondroitin sulfate, polyethylene glycol, polylactic acid, etc. Moreover, many kinds of animal adhesion models, such as cecum abrasion models and unitary horn models, are developed to evaluate new materials' efficacy. A new animal adhesion model based on hepatectomy and conventional animal adhesion models is recently developed and a new adhesion barrier by this new model is also developed. In summary, many kinds of materials and animal models are studied; thus, it is quite important to overview this field's current progress. Here, PPA is reviewed in terms of the species of biomaterials and animal models and several problems to be solved to develop better antiadhesion materials in the future are discussed.

Abstract
Adhesions are permanent fibrovascular bands between peritoneal surfaces, which develop following virtually all body cavity surgeries. The susceptibility to develop, and the severity, of adhesions following intra-abdominal surgery varies within and between individuals, suggesting that heritable factors influence adhesion development. In this manuscript, we discuss the pathophysiology of adhesion development from the perspective of genetic susceptibility. We restrict our discussion to genes and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are specifically involved in, or that cause modification of, the adhesion development process. We performed a literature search using the PubMed database for all relevant English language articles up to March 2020 (n = 186). We identified and carefully reviewed all relevant articles addressing genetic mutations or single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that impact the risk for adhesion development. We also reviewed references from these articles for additional information. We found several reported SNPs, genetic mutations, and upregulation of messenger RNAs that directly or indirectly increase the propensity for postoperative adhesion development, namely in genes for transforming growth factor beta, vascular endothelial growth factor, interferon-gamma, matrix metalloproteinase, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and the interleukins. An understanding of genetic variants could provide insight into the pathophysiology of adhesion development. The information presented in this review contributes to a greater understanding of adhesion development at the genetic level and may allow modification of these genetic risks, which may subsequently guide management in preventing and treating this challenging complication of abdominal surgery. In particular, the information could help identify patients at greater risk for adhesion development, which would make them candidates for anti-adhesion prophylaxis. Currently, agents to reduce postoperative adhesion development exist, and in the future, development of agents, which specifically target individual genetic profile, would be more specific in preventing intraperitoneal adhesion development.

Abstract
Peruvian maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root native to the Andean region, cultivated for at least 2000 years. Maca is rich in fiber, a large number of essential amino acids, fatty acids, and other nutrients, including vitamin C, copper, iron, and calcium. Besides these essential nutrients, this root contains bioactive compounds responsible for benefits to the human body, which has caused a considerable increase in its consumption in the last 20 years worldwide. This review documents the Peruvian maca composition and the recent findings regarding the medicinal effects of this root in sexual dysfunction regulation, neuroprotective effects, action in memory enhancement, antidepressant, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory activities, and skin protection.

Abstract
Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is a serious clinical condition that affects the high percentage of patients after abdominal surgery. In this review, we have tried to focus on pathophysiology and different underlying signal pathways of adhesion formation based on recent progress in the molecular and cellular mechanisms. Also, the strategies, developed based on traditional herbal and modern medicines, to prevent and treat the PPA via regulation of the molecular mechanisms were investigated. The search engines such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct have been used to evaluate the current literature related to the pathogenesis of adhesion formation and novel products. Recently, different mechanisms have been defined for adhesion formation, mainly categorized in fibrin formation and adhesion fibroblast function, inflammation, and angiogenesis. Therefore, the suppression of these mechanisms via traditional and modern medicine has been suggested in several studies. While different strategies with encouraging findings have been developed, most of the studies showed contradictory results and were performed on animals. The herbal products have been introduced as safe and effective agent which can be considered in future preclinical and clinical studies. Although a wide range of therapeutics based on traditional and modern medicines have been suggested, there is no agreement in the efficacy of these methods to prevent or treat adhesion formation after surgeries. Further basic and clinical researches are still needed to propose the efficiency of recommended strategies for prevention and treatment of PPA.

Abstract
Lepidium meyenii (Maca) is an edible root plant that grows in the Andean region of Peru. For centuries, the plant has been used as a dietary supplement for its nutritional and therapeutic properties. Maca are rich in high value nutritional elements and secondary metabolites (macaridine, macamides and glucosinolates) with high biological activity. Several studies demonstrated various biological effects of Maca mainly in the field of fertility. The aim of this review is to summarize the state of knowledge on the properties of Maca on male reproduction. Literature data was performed in PubMed with researches published from 2000 to 2019. The research showed results related to the effects of Maca on the quality and quantity of the semen, sexual behaviour and disorders of the male genital tract. Despite the numerous studies carried out on different animal species, further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms of action of Maca.

Abstract
Peritoneal adhesion occurs in a majority of patients following abdominal surgery and can result in significant side effects and complications. Current strategies to minimize adhesions involve the use of nontargeted anatomical barriers that are either inefficient in protecting injured areas or lacking the adequate residence time to prevent adhesions. Herein, the development of a biologically targeted photo-crosslinkable nanopatch (pCNP) is reported that can prevent postsurgical adhesion. It is demonstrated that pCNP can form a compact protective barrier over surfaces with exposed collagen IV. Using a rat parietal peritoneal excision adhesion model, it is showed that pCNP is highly effective and safe in preventing postsurgical adhesions. This work presents a novel approach to preventing peritoneal adhesion with nanomaterials.

Abstract
Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walpers) has emerged as a popular functional plant food due to various claimed health effects. This review details the major (i.e., starch, dietary fiber, and protein) and minor constituents (i.e., minerals, non-starch polysaccharides, polyphenols (flavonolignans), macaenes, macamides, glucosinolates, and alkaloids) of maca (root and aerial parts). Diverse health effects of maca are also summarized. Various bioactivities of maca include enhanced reproductive health, antifatigue, antioxidation, neuroprotection, antimicrobial activity, anticancer, hepatoprotection, immunomodulation, and improving skin health and digestive system's function. Plant genetics, botanical parts, processing, extraction, and experimental protocols represent the major factors affecting the chemical composition, physicochemical attributes, and health effects of maca-based products. However, clinical studies to support the claimed health effects of maca and related mechanisms appear to be lacking. Product innovation and diversification in food and non-food utilization of different parts of maca to maximize the value perceptions are suggested.

Abstract
Abdominal adhesions (AA) account for the most common complication of peritoneal surgery with bowel obstruction being the severest problem in the absence of effective predicting biomarkers. Anti-AA-barriers or adhesiolysis did not completely prevent bowel obstruction, although there is evidence they might reduce related complications requiring reoperation. In addition, gender-related predispositions have not been adequately investigated. We explored the role of coagulation Factor XIII (F13A1 and F13B subunit-genes) in patients following laparotomy, mostly median/lower median incision line. Globally, 426 patients (54%,♀), were PCR-SNP-genotyped for FXIIIA V34L (rs5985), FXIIIA P564L (rs5982), FXIIIA Y204F (rs3024477) and FXIIIB H95R (rs6003). Patients' clinical phenotypes were: Group-A (n = 212), those who developed AA, and 55.2% of them developed bowel obstruction (subgroup-A1), the remaining were subgroup-A2; Group B (n = 214) were those who did not develop AA (subgroup-B1; 53.3%) or symptoms/complications (subgroup-B2). Among different laparotomy, colon surgery associated with AA at a major extent (OR = 5.1; 3.24-7.8; P < 0.0001) with different gender scores (♀OR = 5.33; 2.32-12.23; P < 0.0001 and ♂OR = 3.44; 1.58-7.49; P < 0.0001). Among SNPs, P564L (OR = 4.42; 1.45-13.4; P = 0.008) and Y204F (OR = 7.78; 1.62-37.3; P = 0.01) significantly predicted bowel obstruction and survival-analyses yielded interesting gender distinctions (♀HR = 5.28; 2.36-11.8; P = 0.00005; ♂HR = 2.22; 1.31-3.85; P = 0.0034). Active compounds preventing AA belong to the anticoagulant/fibrinolysis areas, suggesting them candidate investigation targets. We identified novel prognostic markers to predict AA/bowel obstruction giving insights to design novel therapeutic and gender prevention programs.

Abstract
The absence of the thyroid hormone (TH) could impair testicular function, but its mechanism is still rudimentary. This study aims to explore the roles of estrogen receptor (ER α, β) and G protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30), extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK1/2) and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathways in apoptosis in testes of hypothyroidism rats. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control (C), low-(L) and high-hypothyroidism (H) groups [1 mL per 100 g BW per day normal saline, 0.001% and 0.1% propylthiouracil (PTU), respectively] by intragastrical gavage for 60 days. The levels of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in serum were measured. Expressions of ERα, ERβ and GPR30, pathway related protein expressions of ERK1/2 and PI3 K/AKT and apoptosis were detected in testicular homogenates. The results showed that T3 and T4 levels were decreased, and the TSH level was increased significantly in the H group. Protein expressions of ERα, ERβ and GPR30 decreased significantly in the H group. Significantly decreased protein expressions of p-ERK1/2, p-PI3K p85, p-AKT Ser473, Ras, p-Raf-1 Ser259, p-Raf-1 Ser338 and cyclin D1 in L and H groups as well PI3K p85, p-AKT and Thr308 in the H group were observed. Moreover, there was a significant increase in the Bad protein expression in L and H groups. In addition, there was a significant increase in the expression of Bax/Bcl-2, caspase 9 and cleaved caspase 3 and a significant decrease in the total caspase 3 protein expression in the H group. These results suggested that ERK1/2 and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways could be suppressed by hypothyroidism via inhibiting the expressions of ERs and could finally induce apoptosis in testes.

Abstract
Cyclophosphamide is a chemotherapy drug for the treatment of cancer. Chicken embryo amniotic fluid, vitamin C and coenzyme Q10 have anti-oxidant properties. Total of 70 adult female mice were selected and divided into seven groups. The first group that received 2 ml kg-1 of inactivated amniotic fluid subcutaneously. The second group treated with 75 mg kg-1of cyclophosphamide by intraperitoneal injection. Third to fifth groups received 1, 2, and 4 ml kg-1 of chicken embryo amniotic fluid, respectively. The sixth group received vitamin C at a dose of 0.2 mg g-1 of body weight by oral gavages. Seventh group received 10 mg kg-1 coenzyme Q10 intraperitoneally. All cyclophosphamide treated groups (3-7) received 75 mg kg-1 of cyclophosphamide intraperitoneal on day 22. The mice were euthanized on day 29 and ovarian tissue antioxidant enzymes including glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) were evaluated. Activities of above mentioned enzymes in treatment groups (3-7) was significantly higher than patient control group (2). The results also revealed that MDA levels were higher in the control group in comparison to other treatment groups. Therefore, it is concluded that the chick embryo amniotic fluid and coenzyme Q10 can compete with compounds like vitamin C in increasing the anti-oxidant level in ovarian tissue.

Abstract
According to classical knowledge of reproductive biology, in the ovary of female mammals there is a limited number of oocytes and there is no possibility of renewal if the oocytes are lost due to disease or injury. However, in recent years, the results of some studies on renewal and formation of oocytes and follicles in the adult mammalian ovary have led to the questioning of this opinion. The aim of our study is to demonstrate the presence of putative germline and pluripotent stem cells in the adult mouse ovary and their differentiation potential into germ and somatic cells. In ovary tissues and cells harvested from pre-differentiation step, the expression of pluripotent and germline stem cell markers was analysed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), immunofluorescence staining and western blotting. Embryoid bodies that formed in this step were analysed using immunofluorescence staining and transmission electron microscopy. Ovarian stem cells were induced to differentiate into oocyte, osteoblast, chondrocyte and neural cells. Besides morphological observation, differentiated cells were analysed by RT-PCR, histochemical and immunofluorescence staining. Expression of germline and pluripotent stem cell markers both in mRNA and at the protein level were detected in the pre-differentiated cells and ovary tissues. As a result of the differentiation process, the formation of oocyte-like cells, osteoblasts, chondrocytes and neural cells was observed and characteristics of differentiated cells were confirmed using the methods mentioned above. Our study results revealed that the adult mouse ovary contains germline and pluripotent stem cells with the capacity to differentiate into oocyte-like cells, osteoblasts, chondrocytes and neural cells.

Abstract
Ovarian tissue cryopreservation together with follicle culture provides a promising technique for fertility preservation in cancer patients. The study aimed to evaluate follicle parameters in a culture medium supplemented with VEGFA165 and/or fetuin. Vitrified-warmed ovarian cortical pieces were divided randomly into four culture groups consisting of basic culture medium (control), and the basic culture medium supplemented with VEGFA165, fetuin or both. After six days of culture, we evaluated the following: percentage of resting, primary and secondary growing follicles; survival rate; steroid hormones production; levels of reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant capacity; and developmental and antioxidant gene expression. The addition of VEGFA165 alone or in combination with fetuin to the culture medium caused resting follicle activation and increased the number of growing follicles. In the VEGFA165 group, we found a significant increase in the concentrations of 17β-estradiol at day 6 and progesterone from 4th day of the culture period. In the VEGFA165 + fetuin group, the concentration of 17β-estradiol rose at day 4 of the culture period. The levels of BMP15, GDF9 and INHB mRNAs were increased in all treated groups. In the fetuin and fetuin + VEGFA165 groups, we observed a high level of total antioxidant capacity and expression of SOD1 and CAT genes, low reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation levels and increased number of viable follicles. In conclusion, the present study provides useful evidence that supplementation of culture medium with VEGFA165 + fetuin leads to primordial follicle activation and development and increased percentage of healthy secondary growing follicles.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Lepidium meyenii (maca) in chemically and physically subfertile mice. After 35 days, the following groups of mice were evaluated: control, sham, chemical subfertility, chemical subfertility-maca-supplemented, physical subfertility, physical subfertility-maca-supplemented and maca-supplemented only. Motility (32.36% ± 5.34%) and sperm count (44.4 ± 5.37 × 10(6) /ml) in the chemically and physically subfertile mice (11.81% ± 4.06%, 17.34 ± 13.07 × 10(6) /ml) decreased compared to the control (75.53% ± 2.97% and 57.4 ± 19.6 10(6) /ml) and sham (53.5% ± 7.86% and 58.4 ± 14.10 10(6) /ml). Maca was able to reverse the deleterious effect of motility (76.36 ± 1.97) as well as sperm count (53.5 ± 9.18 × 10(6) /ml) on chemical subfertility. In contrast, maca did not reverse the effects of induced physical subfertility nor motility (18.78% ± 14.41%) or sperm count (20.17 ± 11.20 × 10(6) /ml). The percentage of sperm DNA fragmentation in the physically subfertile mice increased (11.1% ± 19.29%) compared to the control (0.84% ± 0.85%). However, in the physically subfertile group, maca decreased sperm DNA fragmentation (2.29% ± 2.30%) closer to the sham (1.04% ± 0.62%) and the control (0.84% ± 0.85%). The group supplemented only with maca showed 0.54% ± 0.50% of spermatozoa with DNA fragmentation. Yet, the differences observed were statistically not significant. In conclusion, it appears that maca activates the cytochrome P450 system after chemically induced subfertility. However, it does not reverse the low mitochondrial membrane potential in spermatozoa compromised in the physical subfertility group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lepidium meyenii Walpers (maca) is an herb known as a traditional nutritional supplement and widely used in Peru, North America, and Europe to enhance human fertility and treat osteoporosis. The secondary metabolites of maca, namely, maca alkaloids, macaenes, and macamides, are bioactive compounds, but their targets are undefined. METHODS The pharmacophore-based PharmaDB targets database screening joint the ligand shape similarity-based WEGA validation approach is proposed to predict the targets of these unique constituents and was performed using Discovery Studio 4.5 and PharmaDB. A compounds-targets-diseases network was established using Cytoscape 3.2. These suitable targets and their genes were calculated and analyzed using ingenuity pathway analysis and GeneMANIA. RESULTS Certain targets were identified in osteoporosis (8 targets), prostate cancer (9 targets), and kidney diseases (11 targets). This was the first study to identify the targets of these bioactive compounds in maca for cardiovascular diseases (29 targets). The compound with the most targets (46) was an amide alkaloid (MA-24). CONCLUSION In silico target fishing identified maca's traditional effects on treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, prostate cancer, and kidney diseases, and its potential function of treating cardiovascular diseases, as the most important of this herb's possible activities.

Abstract
In addition to its role in maintaining organism homeostasis, the immune system also plays a crucial role in the modulation of ovarian function, as it regulates ovarian development, follicular maturation, ovulation and the formation of the corpus luteum. Ovarian germline stem cells are pluripotent stem cells derived from the ovarian cortex that can differentiate into ovarian germ cells and primary granulosa cells. Recent work has demonstrated that the proliferation and differentiation of ovarian germline stem cells is regulated in part by immune cells and their secreted factors. This paper reviews the role of the immune system in the regulation of ovarian function, the relationship between immune components and ovarian germline stem cells and current research efforts in this field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A common cause of failure in laminectomy surgery is when epidural, peridural, or perineural adhesion occurs postoperatively. The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of a temperature-sensitive, anti-adhesive agent (TSAA agent), Guardix-SG®, as a mechanical barrier for the prevention or reduction of peridural scar adhesion in a rabbit laminectomy model. METHODS Twenty-six mature rabbits were used for this study. Each rabbit underwent two separate laminectomies at lumbar vertebrae L3 and L6, left empty (the control group) and applied 2 mL of the TSAA agent (the experimental group), respectively. Invasive scar formation or inflammation after laminectomy was quantitatively evaluated by measuring the thickness of the dura, the distance from the surface of dura to the scar tissues, the number of inflammatory cells in the scar tissues at the laminectomy site, and the concentration of collagen in histological sections. RESULTS At 6 weeks postsurgery, the dura was significantly thinner and the distance from the surface of dura to the scar tissues was greater in the experimental group than in the control group (p=0.04 and p=0.01). The number of inflammatory cells was not significantly different in the two groups (p=0.08), although the mean number of inflammatory cells was relatively lower in the experimental group than in the control group. CONCLUSION The current study suggests that the TSAA agent, Guardix-SG®, could be useful as an interpositional physical barrier after laminectomy for the prevention or reduction of adhesion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether metabolic markers are differentially expressed in normal and adhesion fibroblasts with and without hypoxia exposure. DESIGN Prospective experimental study. SETTING University research laboratory. PATIENT(S) Fibroblasts established from normal peritoneum and adhesion tissues from the same patients. INTERVENTION(S) In vitro experiments on normal peritoneal and adhesion fibroblasts under normal and hypoxic (2% O2) conditions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Expression of metabolic markers, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α, hexokinase 2 (HK2), lactose dehydrogenase A (LDHA), and pyruvate dehydrogenase alpha 1 (PDHA1) were measured using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction; adenosine triphosphate (ATP), HIF-1α, and lactate levels were assessed with ELISAs. RESULT(S) Baseline mRNA levels of GAPDH and HIF-1α were increased, while GLUT1 and PDHA1 were decreased in adhesion as compared with in normal peritoneal fibroblasts. There was no change in baseline levels of HK2 or LDHA between the cell lines. Hypoxia increased protein levels of HIF-1α and mRNA levels of GAPDH, GLUT1, and HK2 and decreased levels of PDHA1 in both cell lines. Hypoxia increased LDHA mRNA levels in normal peritoneal fibroblasts. Baseline levels of lactate and ATP were lower in adhesion as compared with in normal peritoneal fibroblasts. In response to hypoxia, there was an increase in lactate in both cell lines and a decrease in ATP in normal fibroblasts. CONCLUSION(S) Adhesion fibroblasts manifested an altered metabolic profile, which favors the glycolytic pathway, and is further altered by hypoxia. Targeting these specific metabolic markers during surgery can be an important therapeutic intervention minimizing the development of postoperative adhesions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postoperative peritoneal adhesions continue to be a major source of morbidity and occasional mortality. Studies have shown that matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels are decreased postoperatively which may limits matrix degradation and participate in the development of peritoneal adhesions. In this proof-of-principle study, we evaluated the effect of gene therapy with catalytically inactive mutant MMP-9 on postoperative peritoneal adhesions in rats. METHODS Adenovirus encoding mutant MMP-9 (Ad-mMMP-9) or saline was instilled in the peritoneal cavity after cecal and parietal peritoneal injury in rats. Expression of mutant MMP-9 transcript was verified by sequencing. Adenovirus E4 gene expression, adhesion scores, MMP-9, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) expression were evaluated at sacrifice one week after treatment. RESULTS Both mutant MMP-9 transcripts and adenovirus E4 gene were expressed in Ad-mMMP-9 treated adhesions. Adhesions severity decreased significantly (p = 0.036) in the Ad-mMMP-9-treated compared with saline-treated adhesions. Expression of MMP-9 mRNA and protein were elevated (p = 0.001 and p = 0.029, respectively) in the Ad-mMMP-9-treated adhesions compared with saline-treated adhesions. While tPA levels were increased (p = 0.02) in Ad-mMMP-9 treated adhesions compared with saline-treated adhesions, TGF-β1 and PAI-1 levels were decreased (p = 0.017 and p = 0.042, respectively). No difference in mortality were found between groups (p = 0.64). CONCLUSIONS Mutant MMP-9 gene therapy effectively transduced peritoneal adhesions resulting in reduction of severity of primary peritoneal adhesions.

Abstract
P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is encoded by the multidrug resistance (MDR1) gene and is well studied as a multi-drug resistance transporter. Peritoneal adhesion formation following abdominal surgery remains an important clinical problem. Here, we found that P-gp was highly expressed in human adhesion fibroblasts and promoted peritoneal adhesion formation in a rodent model. Knockdown of P-gp expression by intraperitoneal injection of MDR1-targeted siRNA significantly reduced both the peritoneal adhesion development rate and adhesion grades. Additionally, we found that operative injury up-regulated P-gp expression in peritoneal fibroblasts through the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway and histone H3 acetylation. The overexpression of P-gp accelerated migration and proliferation of fibroblasts via volume-activated Cl(-) current and cell volume regulation by enhancing phosphorylation of the chloride channel-3. Therefore, P-gp plays a critical role in postoperative peritoneal adhesion formation and may be a valuable therapeutic target for preventing the formation of peritoneal adhesions.

Abstract
Maca, Lepidium meyenii Walpers (Brassicaceae), is an annual herbaceous plant native to the high plateaus of the Peruvian central Andes. Its underground storage hypocotyls have been a traditional medicinal agent and dietary staple since pre-Columbian times. Reported properties include energizing and fertility-enhancing effects. Published reports have focused on the benzylalkamides (macamides) present in dry hypocotyls as one of the main bioactive components. Macamides are secondary amides formed by benzylamine and a fatty acid moiety, with varying hydrocarbon chain lengths and degree of unsaturation. Although it has been assumed that they are usually present in fresh undamaged tissues, analyses show them to be essentially absent from them. However, hypocotyls dried by traditional Andean postharvest practices or industrial oven drying contain up to 800μgg(-1) dry wt (2.3μmolg(-1) dry wt) of macamides. In this study, the generation of macamides and their putative precursors were studied during nine-week traditional drying trials at 4200m altitude and in ovens under laboratory conditions. Freeze-thaw cycles in the open field during drying result in tissue maceration and release of free fatty acids from storage and membrane lipids up to levels of 1200μgg(-1) dry wt (4.3μmolg(-1) dry wt). Endogenous metabolism of the isothiocyanates generated from glucosinolate hydrolysis during drying results in maximal benzylamine values of 4300μgg(-1) dry wt (40.2μmolg(-1) dry wt). Pearson correlation coefficients of the accumulation profiles of benzylamine and free fatty acid to that of macamides showed good values of 0.898 and 0.934, respectively, suggesting that both provide sufficient substrate for amide synthesis during the drying process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of intravenous infliximab in preventing the formation of peritoneal adhesions in an animal model of rat. METHODS This was an experimental study being performed in animal laboratory of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences during 2012. Sixty albino rats were randomly assigned in to three groups by Random Design Method. The first group received single infliximab injection (n=20), the second one received double infliximab injection (n=20) and the third received nothing (n=20), after receiving intra-peritoneal injection of talc for induction of peritoneal adhesions. All the animals were sacrificed after 6 weeks and the peritoneal adhesions were evaluated according to Nair classification. RESULTS We observed that the mean adhesion grade was lower in those who received double dose of infliximib when compared to single dose and controls. However the difference did not reach a significant value (p=0.178). The grade of peritoneal adhesion was also comparable between the three study groups (p=0.103). The mean number of 1st WBC count was also comparable between three study groups (p=0.382). We observed that 2nd WBC count was also comparable between two study groups (p=0.317). CONCLUSION Administration of intravenous infliximab after intraabdominal surgicalprocedures would not prevent the formation of peritoneal adhesions in animal model of albino rat.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, relation between reactive oxygen species (ROS) ROS concentration and semen quality was indicated. Saffron has traditionally been not only considered as a food additive but also as a medicinal herb, which has a good antioxidant properties. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the protection potency of saffron and vitamin E on sperm chromatin integrity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty adult male Wistar rats divided equally into saffron (100 mg/kg), vitamin E (100 mg/kg) and control (0.5cc distilled water /day) groups. After 60 days, cauda epididymis dissected and sperm cells were used for analysis of sperm chromatin packaging by chromomycin A3 (CMA3) staining, and sperm chromatin susceptibility to acid denaturation by acridine orange (AO) staining. RESULTS The mean percentage of CMA3 positive sperm was significantly decreased in saffron and vitamin E groups relative to control group (p<0.001). Moreover, the AO staining results showed that the mean percentage of sperm with DNA damage was significantly decreased in saffron and vitamin E groups as compared with control group (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Our results purposed that saffron can protect sperm against DNA damage and chromatin anomalies.

Abstract
This research investigated the regulation of aromatase and androgen receptor gene expression in the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis of male and female European eels (Anguilla anguilla) during induced sexual maturation. Complete A. anguilla aromatase (aa-cyp19a1) and partial androgen receptor α and β (aa-ara and aa-arb) sequences were isolated, and qPCR assays were validated and used for quantification of transcript levels for these three genes. Expression levels of the genes varied with sex, tissue and stage of maturation. aa-arb was expressed at higher levels than aa-ara in the pituitary and gonad in both sexes, suggesting aa-arb is the physiologically most important androgen receptor in these tissues. In the female brain, a decrease in aa-ara and an increase in aa-cyp19a1 were observed at the vitellogenic stage. In contrast, a progressive increase in all three genes was observed in the pituitary and ovaries throughout gonadal development, with aa-arb and aa-cyp19a1 reaching significantly higher levels at the vitellogenic stage. In the male pituitary, a decrease in aa-arb and an increase in aa-cyp19a1 were observed at the beginning of spermatogenesis, and thereafter remained low and high, respectively. In the testis, the transcript levels of androgen receptors and aa-cyp19a1 were higher during the early stages of spermatogenesis and decreased thereafter. These sex-dependent differences in the regulation of the expression of aa-ara, aa-arb and cyp19a1 are discussed in relation to the role of androgens and their potential aromatization in the European eel during gonadal maturation.

Abstract
This article presents an overview of the involvement of iron overload-induced nitric oxide (NO) overproduction in apoptosis of peritoneal macrophages of women with endometriosis. We have postulated that the peritoneal iron overload originated from retrograde menstruation or bleeding lesions in the ectopic endometrium, which may contribute to the development of endometriosis by a wide range of mechanisms, including oxidative damage and chronic inflammation. Excessive NO production may also be associated with impaired clearance of endometrial cells by macrophages, which promotes cell growth in the peritoneal cavity. Therefore, further research of the mechanisms and consequences of macrophage apoptosis in endometriosis helps discover novel therapeutic strategies that are designed to prevent progression of endometriosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE(S) PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) produces symptoms in approximately 5% to 10% of women of reproductive age (12-45 years old). It is thought to be one of the leading causes of female subfertility. This study aimed to confirm the role of nutrition containing omega-3 (polyunsaturated fatty acid) on control of experimental PCO induced by estradiol-valerat in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Wistar female rats (n=40) were allocated into control (n=10) and test groups (n= 30), test group was subdivided into 3 groups: G1, received omega-3 (240 mg/kg/orally/daily); G2 and G3 groups were induced PCO by single injection of estradiol-valerate (16 mg/kg/IM). Group 3 received omega-3 (240 mg/kg/orally/daily) and low carbohydrate feeding for 60 subsequent days; on sixtieth day 5 ml blood samples and ovarian tissues of all rats in the group were removed and prepared for biochemical and hormonal analysis. RESULTS Catalase, GPX (Glutathione peroxidase), SOD (Superoxide dismutase) in groups that received omega-3 showed higher levels, but MDA (malondialdehyde) level was significantly decreased (P<0.05) in comparison with other experimental groups. Ovarian weights in both experimental and control groups were similar (P<0.05). Level of serum FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) was decreased, but level of testosterone was significantly increased (P<0.05) in PCO group in comparison with control and omega-3 groups. CONCLUSION RESULTS revealed that administration of omega-3 plus lower carbohydrate food significantly controlled PCO syndrome and balanced FSH and testosterone.

Abstract
Pentoxifylline reduces peritoneal adhesions and increases peritoneal fibrinolysis in rodents. Furthermore, the activation of the fibrinolytic system by streptokinase leading to degradation of fibrin is effective in the prevention of adhesion formation. We have investigated the effects of pentoxifylline and streptokinase alone and/or coadministration on postoperative intra-abdominal adhesion formation in adult female NMRI mice. Drugs were administered from the day of surgery until 10 days after surgery. At relaparotomy 11 days after surgery, the abdomen was opened, and the adhesions were graded in a blinded fashion utilizing the classification system described. Oral gavage administration of lower doses of pentoxifylline (3.125, 6.25, and 12.5 mg/kg) had no significant effect on postsurgical adhesion formation, while the higher doses of pentoxifylline (25 and 50 mg/kg) significantly decreased postsurgical adhesion formation. Moreover, intraperitoneal injection of lower doses of streptokinase (9.375, 18.75, and 37.5 unit/kg, i.p.) had no significant effect on postsurgical adhesion formation, while the higher doses of streptokinase (75 and 150 unit/kg) significantly decreased postsurgical adhesion formation. In other series of experiments, coadministration of lower doses of pentoxifylline and streptokinase doses, which were ineffective when given alone, significantly decreased postsurgical intra-abdominal adhesion formation compared with streptokinase control group. The results suggest that pentoxifylline may interfere with streptokinase in the reduction of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesion formation by enhancing local fibrinolytic activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative peritoneal adhesion formation following abdominal surgery remains a relevant surgical problem. The application of soluble physico-chemical barriers like 4% icodextrin is one approach to protect the peritoneal surface from getting linked to adhesive scar. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of 4% icodextrin on peritoneal tissue response both of visceral and parietal peritoneum, adhesion formation and wound healing. METHODS 40 rats were divided into two groups. After creation of an intraabdominal defect, either 4% icodextrin (Adept®) or sodium chloride was applied. Animals were sacrificed after 7 and 21 days. Adhesions were scored by an adhesion score. Furthermore, immunohistochemical investigations were conducted to determine the discrete influence of icodextrin on the parietal and visceral peritoneal tissue responses (CD68+ macrophages, CD3+ T-lymphocytes, vimentin for mesenchymal cells, HBME-1 for mesothelial cells, and as components of wound healing COX-2, C-myc, catenin). RESULTS Postoperative peritoneal adhesions were predominantly present in the sodium chloride group as compared to the icodextrin group (14/19 (74%) vs. 9/19 (47%); p = 0.048). The adhesion score however did not reveal any significant differences, (p = 0.614). Furthermore, the expression of vimentin in both the parietal and visceral peritoneum after 21 days was significantly lower in the icodextrin group than in the sodium chloride group (p = 0.038 and p = 0.028, respectively). No significant differences were observed for macrophages, lymphocytes, reperitonealisation or the expression of COX-2, C-myc or Catenin. CONCLUSIONS The intraperitoneal application of 4% icodextrin reduces adhesion formation in comparison to sodium chloride. 4% icodextrin solution reduces the inflammatory and mesenchymal infiltrate in the wounded area, thus improving the ratio of mesothel cells to mesenchymal infiltrate. As demonstrated, icodextrin is able to ameliorate the local tissue response. Further experimental studies would be done to elaborate the impact on the early response of the adaptive immune system, which may then trigger the subsequent wound healing and tissue repair.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the adverse effects of various doses of nicotine and protective effects of different concentrations of gamma-tocotrienol (gamma-TCT) on in vitro embryonic development and lipid peroxidation in mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS A) Effects of various doses of nicotine on in vitro embryonic development: Female mice were treated with 1.0, 3.0, or 5.0 mg/kg/day nicotine for 7 consecutive days. Animals were superovulated, cohabited overnight, and sacrificed. Embryos were cultured in vitro. Plasma was assayed. B) Effects of concomitant treatment of nicotine concurrently with various doses of gamma-TCT on in vitro embryonic development: Female mice were treated with nicotine (5.0 mg/kg/day), gavaged gamma-TCT of 30, 60, or 90 mg/kg/day or nicotine concurrently with gamma-TCT of 3 different doses for 7 consecutive days. Animals were superovulated, cohabited overnight, and sacrificed. Embryos were cultured and plasma was assayed. RESULTS A) Effects of various doses of nicotine on in vitro embryonic development: Number of hatched blastocysts decreased in 1.0 and 3.0 mg/kg/day nicotine groups. Nicotine at 5.0 mg/kg/day stopped embryo development at morula. MDA concentrations increased following all nicotine doses. B) Effects of concomitant treatment of nicotine concurrently with various doses of gamma-TCT on in vitro embryonic development: Embryo development was completed in all groups. MDA concentration increased only in the group treated with nicotine concurrently with 30 mg/kg/day gamma-TCT. CONCLUSIONS Nicotine impairs in vitro embryo development and increases MDA in plasma. The deleterious impact of nicotine on embryo development is reversed by supplementing gamma-TCT concurrently with nicotine.

Abstract
S-metolachlor is a chloroacetanilide herbicide widely used in the agriculture to control weeds and was demonstrated that it increases the activity of the aromatase enzyme in cell cultures, which may culminate as endocrine disruption action in vivo. To investigate this hypothesis, prepubertal Wistar male rats were exposed to metolachlor (5 or 50 mg/kg/day, NOEL for reproductive toxicity: 23.5-26.0 mg/kg/day) from PND23 (postnatal day) to PND53. During this period, the growth of the animals and the age and weight at puberty were recorded. In PND53, tissues were collected and the analysis of LH, FSH, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estradiol serum concentrations, morphometric evaluation of the seminiferous epithelium, and weight of the testes and the seminal vesicle (undrained and drained) was performed (Statistical difference: P < 0.05). Metolachlor caused an increase in serum concentrations of testosterone, estradiol, and FSH and a reduction in DHT but did not alter the LH. There were also observed a higher amount of fluid in the seminal vesicles, precocious puberty, and changes in morphology of the seminiferous epithelium of treated animals. We demonstrated in this paper that prepubertal exposure to S-metolachlor caused changes in reproductive endocrinology of male rats.

Abstract
Postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions represent a serious clinical problem. In this review, we have focused on recent progress in the cellular and humoral mechanisms underpinning adhesion formation, and have reviewed strategies that interfere with these pathways as a means to prevent their occurrence. Current and previous English-language literature on the pathogenesis of adhesion formation was identified. As the burden of surgical disease in the world population increases, and the frequency of reoperation increases, prevention of adhesion formation has become a pressing goal in surgical research.

Abstract

However, the expression and function of nidogen-2 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unknown at present. In this study, we sought to investigate the potential role of nidogen-2 in HCC. METHODS Nidogen-2 expression in HCC tissues, cell lines, and serum was evaluated by immunohistochemistry, immunoassay, and real-time PCR assays. The regulation of nidogen-2 expression was investigated using doxycycline induction and small interfering RNA analyses. RESULTS Nidogen-2 was significantly decreased in both HCC tissues and serum (P < 0.001). The decreased expression of nidogen-2 in HCC tissues was significantly correlated with tumor progression factors (P < 0.05). Inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 led to significantly upregulate nidogen-2 expression in vitro assays. Moreover, patients with HCC had lowest serum nidogen-2 levels compared with patients with benign liver diseases and normal volunteers. Furthermore, the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed a good diagnostic performance of nidogen-2 for HCC. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that decreased expression of nidogen-2 may have a potential pathogenetic role in the development of HCC and may also have potential diagnostic value for HCC.
