Abstract
Sarcopenia is a progressive age-related muscle disease characterized by low muscle strength, quantity and quality, and low physical performance. The clinical overlap between these subphenotypes (reduction in muscle strength, quantity and quality, and physical performance) was evidenced, but the genetic overlap is still poorly investigated. Herein, we investigated whether there is a genetic overlap amongst sarcopenia subphenotypes in the search for more effective molecular markers for this disease. For that, a Bioinformatics approach was used to identify and characterize pleiotropic effects at the genome, loci and gene levels using Genome-wide association study results. As a result, a high genetic correlation was identified between gait speed and muscle strength (rG=0.5358, p=3.39 × 10-8). Using a Pleiotropy-informed conditional and conjunctional false discovery rate method we identified two pleiotropic loci for muscle strength and gait speed, one of them was nearby the gene PHACTR1. Moreover, 11 pleiotropic loci and 25 genes were identified for muscle mass and muscle strength. Lastly, using a gene-based GWAS approach three candidate genes were identified in the overlap of the three Sarcopenia subphenotypes: FTO, RPS10 and CALCR. The current study provides evidence of genetic overlap and pleiotropy among sarcopenia subphenotypes and highlights novel candidate genes and molecular markers associated with the risk of sarcopenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the best indicator of mobility decline between dynapenia, low skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI), and sarcopenia defined by the EWGSOP2 using different cutoff points for grip strength. METHODS A longitudinal study was conducted with a follow-up of eight years, involving 2,680 individuals aged 60 and older who participated in the ELSA study with a walking speed greater than 0.8 m/s at baseline. Dynapenia was defined using different cutoff points for grip strength. SMMI was defined by the 20th percentile of the entire ELSA sample distribution and sarcopenia was defined based on the EWGSOP2, using different cutoff points for grip strength. Mobility was analysed using the walking speed test. RESULTS Over time, the greatest decline in walking speed occurred in dynapenic women with grip strength < 17 kg (-0.005 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001) and < 20 kg (-0.007 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001). With regards to sarcopenia, the greatest walking speed decline occurred in women with probable sarcopenia when defined by grip strength < 17 kg [(-0.006 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001) or grip strength < 20 kg (-0.007 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001)]. Dynapenia in men as well as low SMMI and sarcopenia in men and women did not enable identifying the risk of mobility decline. CONCLUSION Dynapenia and probable sarcopenia defined by grip strength < 17 kg and < 20 kg enabled identifying walking speed decline over time only in women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Intrinsic capacity impairment results in poor outcomes among older adults. Here we tested handgrip strength as a screening tool for IC impairment in community-dwelling older adults in Xinjiang, China. We assessed the diagnostic accuracy and established optimal cut-off points for handgrip strength in the detection of intrinsic capacity impairment. METHODS In total, 1072 participants were included using a multilevel random sampling method. Intrinsic capacity was constructed according to the definition of the Integrated Care for Older People screening tool proposed by the WHO. RESULTS Altogether, 73.4 % (787/1072) participants had intrinsic capacity impairment. The prevalence of intrinsic capacity impairment for hearing, vision, mobility, cognition, psychological, and vitality domains was 8.6 %, 4.8 %, 39.6 %, 47.3 %, 12.0 %, and 18.8 %, respectively. The adjusted odds ratios [95 % confidence interval) for handgrip strength was 0.935 [0.914-0.956]. The area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic curve for handgrip strength of older men, and handgrip strength of older women with intrinsic capacity impairment were 0.7278, and 0.7534, respectively. The handgrip strength cut-off points were 28.47 kg (60-69 years), 25.76 kg (70-79 years), and 24.45 kg (≥80 years) for men, and 20.75 kg (60-69 years), 19.90 kg (70-79 years), and 16.17 kg (≥80 years) for women. CONCLUSIONS Handgrip strength can be used as a convenient tool for evaluating intrinsic capacity. Weak handgrip strength and low education level were associated with intrinsic capacity impairment in community-dwelling older adults in Xinjiang. Using the cut-off points of handgrip strength for different age groups and genders, older adults with impaired intrinsic capacity can be identified, which may reduce the occurrence of adverse outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional training is essential for maintaining the independence of older adults, especially in rural areas with limited resources. In this study, we assess the short-term and long-term impacts of the Precision Functional Training (PFT) program on mobility outcomes, specifically walking performance, and cognitive ability in community-dwelling older adults. The unique feature of this training program was its countywide, community-based, and tailored approach, designed to strengthen the functional abilities of older adults living in rural areas. METHODS 158 older adults aged 65 years and above were assessed in this one-group pre-posttest study conducted in 11 community care stations in Chiayi County, Taiwan. Participants had two follow-ups, with data collection on mobility and cognition. The 12-week PFT program, led by certified trainers, integrated aerobic, strength, and cognitive elements. Primary outcomes, including changes in gait, falls, and cognition, were analyzed using linear mixed effects and logit models. RESULTS Strengthening mobility is critical to slowing functional decline in older adults. The PFT program led to significant improvements in cognitive function and several gait parameters compared with the baseline. Participants with limited mobility showed enhanced activities of daily living 1-month post-training, but these gains did not persist at the 1-year mark. No significant differences were observed in fall occurrence and knee extension strength. CONCLUSIONS The training did not have a long-term effect; thus, more frequent practice may be necessary. Risk assessment and community-based interventions, particularly for older adults with a higher risk of falls, are recommended. Future prospective randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate the PFT program's effectiveness in preserving mobility.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Grip strength is an indicator for physical performance and highly correlated with general health among older adults. To date, there is limited knowledge regarding the factors contributing to grip strength exclusively among the oldest old based on data from large representative samples and also including institutionalized individuals. Consequently, the purpose of our current study was to address this gap in knowledge. DESIGN A large representative, longitudinal study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Survey on quality of life and subjective well-being of the very old in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW80+), including individuals ≥80 years (residing in institutionalized settings and living in private households) in North Rhine-Westphalia (n = 1824, mean age was 86.7 years, 80 to 104 years). METHODS In accordance with other large cohort studies, isometric grip strength was measured using a dynamometer (Smedley Dynamometer, 100 kg). RESULTS Linear fixed effects regressions showed that decreases in grip strength were significantly associated with increases in age (β = -0.70, P < .001), decreases in social network size (β = 0.08, P < .05), and worsening self-rated health (β = 0.80, P < .01). In contrast, decreases in grip strength were not significantly associated with changes in marital status, changes in living situation, changes in the number of chronic conditions, changes in depressive symptoms, and changes in health literacy. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS It has been shown that age, social network size, and self-rated health were associated with grip strength among the oldest old longitudinally. Our current study may assist in identifying individuals at risk for low grip strength. For example, efforts to maintain social contacts may be beneficial to maintain grip strength. This is relevant because low grip strength contributes to unfavorable outcomes such as poor quality of life, functional impairment, cognitive decline, and reduced longevity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Handgrip strength is a common, simple, and inexpensive method to measure muscle strength. On the other hand, the functional performance measurement involves a usual task which implies repeating elements between the individuals' interaction and the environment. This is fundamental for projecting their results to daily life situation. PURPOSE To explore the relationship between grip strength and measures of functional performance of the upper limbs (ULs) in people over 18 years of age, and to determine the influence of sociodemographic and anthropometric variables on the relationship. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted under the analytical empirical approach, using linear associations between handgrip strength and functional performance measurement tests (correspondence analysis). METHODS Three hundred sixty-two male and female individuals between 18 and 91 years of age from 4 Colombian cities participated. The grip strength of both ULs measured with a digital dynamometry was associated with the Box and Block Test (BBT, manual dexterity), Nine-Hole Peg Test (NHPT, daily living tasks), and Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JJT, ability to grasp, pick up, and place). Multiple linear regression analyzes were performed to assess possible explanatory factors of a sociodemographic and anthropometric order. RESULTS A significant association was found between the grip strength of dominant and non-dominant ULs with all functional performance tests (ρ > 0.27 and p < .001), except for the writing and simulated feeding subtests of the JJT (ρ ≤ 0.16). An interactive effect of age was found in the relationship between grip strength and the 3 functional performance tests. CONCLUSIONS These results support the association between grip strength with the NHPT, JJT, and BBT measures and the interactive effect of age on the performance of all tests.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hand grip strength (HGS) is one of the methods to help early identification of physical frailty and sarcopenia, the major concerns in the aging societies. It is also crucial to evaluate its impact on mortality. However, the available evidence regarding such impact among specific age cohorts (65 to 74 years and above) is limited. This study tried to investigate the relationship between HGS and mortality among specific cohorts of the community-dwelling older individuals in Yilan, Taiwan. METHODS A seven-year longitudinal follow-up study was conducted involving 2,468 community-dwelling older individuals in Yilan. The participants were divided into two groups based on their quartiles of hand grip strength: with poor HGS and with good HGS. The association between HGS and mortality was examined using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS The analysis revealed that age, HGS, gender, medical history of cardiovascular diseases, body mass index, and wrist-hip ratio had significant impacts on seven-year survival. Specifically, individuals with poor HGS exhibited increased mortality, with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 1.87 (95% CI: 1.52-2.30). Furthermore, the adverse effect of poor HGS on mortality was more pronounced in males aged 65-74 years (adjusted HR 4.12, 95% CI: 2.16-7.84), females aged 75 years or older (2.09, 1.43-3.04) and males aged 75 years or older (1.49, 1.07-2.07). CONCLUSION Poor hand grip strength is an independent risk factor for mid-term mortality among community-dwelling older individuals in Yilan. The assessment of HGS can serve as a valuable tool in identifying older individuals at higher risk of death.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our study aimed to identify the risk factors of incident falls between men and women. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING The study recruited participants from the Central region of Singapore. Baseline and follow-up data were collected via a face-to-face survey. PARTICIPANTS Community-dwelling adults aged 40 years and above from the Population Health Index Survey. OUTCOME MEASURE Incident falls were defined as the experience of a fall between the baseline and 1-year follow-up but having no falls 1 year prior to baseline. Multiple logistic regressions were performed to determine the association of sociodemographic factors, medical history and lifestyle with incident falls. Sex subgroup analyses were conducted to examine sex-specific risk factors for incident falls. RESULTS 1056 participants were included in the analysis. At 1-year follow-up, 9.6% of the participants experienced an incident fall. Incidence of falls in women was 9.8% compared with 7.4% in men. In the multivariable analysis for the overall sample, older age (OR: 1.88, 95% CI: 1.10 to 2.86), being pre-frail (OR: 2.13, 95% CI: 1.12 to 4.00) and having depression or feeling depressed/anxious (OR: 2.35, 95% CI: 1.10 to 4.99) were associated with higher odds for incident falls. In subgroup analyses, older age was a risk factor for incident falls in men (OR: 2.68, 95% CI: 1.21 to 5.90) and pre-frail was a risk factor for incident falls in women (OR: 2.82, 95% CI: 1.28 to 6.20). There was no significant interaction effect between sex and age group (p value=0.341) and sex and frailty status (p value=0.181). CONCLUSION Older age, presence of pre-frailty and having depression or feeling depressed/anxious were associated with higher odds of incident falls. In our subgroup analyses, older age was a risk factor for incident falls in men and being pre-frail was a risk factor for incident falls in women. These findings provide useful information for community health services in designing falls prevention programmes for community-dwelling adults in a multi-ethnic Asian population.

Identification and Characterization of Genomic Predictors of Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity Using UK Biobank Data. Nutrients 2023; 15:nu15030758. Abstract
The substantial decline in skeletal muscle mass, strength, and gait speed is a sign of severe sarcopenia, which may partly depend on genetic risk factors. So far, hundreds of genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with handgrip strength, lean mass and walking pace have been identified in the UK Biobank cohort; however, their pleiotropic effects on all three phenotypes have not been investigated. By combining summary statistics of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of handgrip strength, lean mass and walking pace, we have identified 78 independent SNPs (from 73 loci) associated with all three traits with consistent effect directions. Of the 78 SNPs, 55 polymorphisms were also associated with body fat percentage and 25 polymorphisms with type 2 diabetes (T2D), indicating that sarcopenia, obesity and T2D share many common risk alleles. Follow-up bioinformatic analysis revealed that sarcopenia risk alleles were associated with tiredness, falls in the last year, neuroticism, alcohol intake frequency, smoking, time spent watching television, higher salt, white bread, and processed meat intake; whereas protective alleles were positively associated with bone mineral density, serum testosterone, IGF1, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, height, intelligence, cognitive performance, educational attainment, income, physical activity, ground coffee drinking and healthier diet (muesli, cereal, wholemeal or wholegrain bread, potassium, magnesium, cheese, oily fish, protein, water, fruit, and vegetable intake). Furthermore, the literature data suggest that single-bout resistance exercise may induce significant changes in the expression of 26 of the 73 implicated genes in m. vastus lateralis, which may partly explain beneficial effects of strength training in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. In conclusion, we have identified and characterized 78 SNPs associated with sarcopenia and 55 SNPs with sarcopenic obesity in European-ancestry individuals from the UK Biobank.

Abstract
Handgrip strength is a predictor of functional impairment and presence of morbimortality in older adults. However, appropriate reference values and cutoff points are required for its optimal use. This study describes handgrip characteristics in the older adult population of Antioquia-Colombia and compares the dynapenia handgrip cutoffs proposed for Colombians with international criteria. A cross-sectional study including 1592 older adults was done. Dynapenia prevalence by handgrip was analyzed using the following cutoffs: European Consensus of Sarcopenia (2018), Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (2019), Chilean (2018), and Colombian (2019). Handgrip strength significantly decreased with aging, showing a positive and strong association with functional and health parameters. The highest prevalence of dynapenia was found with the Asian Consensus cutoffs (26.1%) and the lowest with the Colombian cutoffs (0.8%). Low agreement was found between the Colombian cutoffs with the European Consensus (kappa = 0.059; p < 0.001), the Asian Consensus (kappa = 0.039; p < 0.001) and the Chilean proposal (kappa = 0.053; p < 0.001). Dynapenia using the Chilean, European, and Asian cutoffs was associated with physical inactivity, presence of multimorbidity, slow gait speed, nutritional risk, and low calf circumference. Meanwhile, the Colombian cutoffs was only associated with slow gait speed and low calf circumference. The handgrip cutoffs proposed for Colombians seems to underestimate the dynapenia prevalence in older people from Antioquia. Furthermore, these cutoff points did not show associations with relevant functional and health parameters. The handgrip cutoffs proposed for Colombians should be used with caution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether handgrip strength can be used as a proxy for detecting slow walking speed in older adults. Measuring walking speed in older adults can be challenging as cognitive and functional decline may have a significant impact on test performance. METHODS Hundred subjects aged >/= 60 were recruited. Slow walking speed was defined as walking speed <1.0 m/s. Handgrip strength was measured using handheld dynamometer. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the two. RESULTS The mean age of the study participants was 67.8±6.2 years. There were 63 males and 37 females. The mean handgrip strength of the participants was 23±5.9 kgs. Older subjects had slow gait speed (r=-0.40, p<0.001) while patients with higher BMI (r=0.36, p<0.001), handgrip strength (r=0.72, p<0.001) and appendicular lean mass (r=0.53, p<0.001) had normal gait speed. On multiple linear regression analysis, only handgrip strength (OR 0.71; 95% CI 0.58-0.87, p=0.001) and nutritional status (OR 8.60; 95% CI 1.98 - 37.40, p=0.004) were found to have a significant association with walking speed. CONCLUSIONS Our study shows that handgrip strength assessment can be used as a surrogate indicator for detecting slow walking speed. Large population studies are warranted to examine its validity.

Abstract
There are observable decreases in muscle strength as a result of ageing that occur from the age of 40, which are thought to occur as a result of changes within the neuromuscular system. Strength-training in older adults is a suitable intervention that may counteract the age-related loss in force production. The neuromuscular adaptations (i.e., cortical, spinal and muscular) to strength-training in older adults are largely equivocal and a systematic review with meta-analysis will serve to clarify the present circumstances regarding the benefits of strength-training in older adults. 20 studies entered the meta-analysis and were analysed using a random-effects model. A best evidence synthesis that included 36 studies was performed for variables that had insufficient data for meta-analysis. One study entered both. There was strong evidence that strength-training increases maximal force production, rate of force development and muscle activation in older adults. There was limited evidence for strength-training to improve voluntary-activation, the volitional-wave and spinal excitability, but strong evidence for increased muscle mass. The findings suggest that strength-training performed between 2 and 12 weeks increases strength, rate of force development and muscle activation, which likely improves motoneurone excitability by increased motor unit recruitment and improved discharge rates.

Abstract
Home gardening has a long history that started when humans became sedentary, being traditionally considered an accessible source of food and medicinal plants to treat common illnesses. With trends towards urbanization and industrialization, particularly in the post-World War II period, the importance of home gardens as important spaces for growing food and medicinal plants reduced and they began to be increasingly seen as decorative and leisure spaces. However, the growing awareness of the negative impacts of agricultural intensification and urbanization for human health, food quality, ecosystem resilience, and biodiversity conservation motivated the emergence of new approaches concerning home gardens. Societies began to question the potential of nearby green infrastructures to human wellbeing, food provisioning, and the conservation of traditional varieties, as well as providers of important services, such as ecological corridors for wild species and carbon sinks. In this context. and to foster adaptive and resilient social-ecological systems, our supported viewpoint intends to be more than an exhaustive set of perceptions, but a reflection of ideas about the important contribution of home gardens to sustainable development. We envision these humble spaces strengthening social and ecological components, by providing a set of diversified and intermingled goods and services for an increasingly urban population.

Abstract
Background Mobility deficits are highly prevalent among geriatric patients and have serious impact on quality of life, hospitalizations, and mortality. This study aims to capture predictors of mobility deficits in hospitalized geriatric patients using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model as a framework. Methods Data were obtained from n = 397 patients (78 ± 7 years, 15 ± 7 ICD-11 diagnoses) on a geriatric ward at time of admission. Mobility was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) total score and gait, static balance and transfer subscores. Parameters from an extensive assessment including medical history, neuropsychological and motor examination, and questionnaires were assigned to the five components of the ICF model. Spearman’s Correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were calculated to identify predictors for the SPPB total score and subscores. Results Use of walking aid, fear of falling (FOF, but not occurrence of previous falls), participation in society, ADL and grip strength were strongly associated with the SPPB total score and all subscores (p < .001). FOF and grip strength were significant predictors for the SPPB total score as well as for gait and transfer subscores. FOF also showed a strong association with the static balance subscore. The clinical parameters of the ICF model could only partially explain the variance in the SPPB total score (24%) and subscores (12–23%), with no parameter from the activities and participation component being significantly predictive. Conclusions FOF and reduced grip strength are associated with mobility deficits in a hospitalized geriatric cohort. Further research should focus on interventions to reduce FOF and increase muscle strength in geriatric patients. Moreover, there is a need for ICF-based assessments instruments (especially in the activities and participation components) that allow a holistic view on mobility and further daily life-relevant health aspects in geriatric patients.

Muscle Weakness and Walking Slowness for the Identification of Sarcopenia in the Older Adults from Northern Brazil: A Cross-Sectional Study. Abstract
Background: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly people from Northern Brazil according to muscle weakness or walking slowness. Methods: The sample consisted of 312 elderly people (72.6 ± 7.8 years). For walking slowness, a gait speed ≤ 0.8 m/s was used as a cut-off value, and for muscle weakness the following handgrip strength criteria were used for men and women, respectively: CI: <27.0/16.0 kg; CII: <35.5/20.0 kg; CIII: grip strength corrected for body mass index (BMI) < 1.05/0.79; CIV: grip strength corrected for total fat mass: <1.66/0.65; CV: grip strength corrected for body mass: <0.45/0.34. Results: Walking speed was reduced in 27.0% of women and 15.2% of men (p < 0.05). According to grip strength criteria, 28.5% of women and 30.4% of men (CI), 58.0% of women and 75.0% of men (CII), 66.0% of women and 39.3% of men (CIII), 28.8% of women and 19.6% of men (CIV), and 56.5% of women and 50.0% of men (CV) were identified as having sarcopenia. Conclusions: Walking slowness is more prevalent in women and muscle weakness is more prevalent in men in Northern Brazil. Walking slowness proved to be more concordant with muscle weakness in both sexes when the CI for handgrip strength was adopted.
