Abstract
Persistent tic disorders (PTD) such as Tourette's syndrome (TS) are common childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorders. Stigmatization of individuals with these disorders remains an ongoing problem. The purpose of this scoping review is to serve as an updated review of the research regarding stigmatization in youth with PTD since the publication of the original systematic review about this topic in 2016. The electronic databases Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL were searched. Of the 4751 initial articles screened after removing duplications, 47 studies met the inclusion criteria. The studies were examined under the social-ecological stigmatization model, which helps categorize stigmatization into individual, interpersonal, community, and structural levels and serves as a broader definition of stigmatization than the previous systematic review. On the individual level, youth with PTD had lower self-esteem than peers, often leading to fear of future stigmatization, avoidant behaviors, and self-stigmatization. They also experienced higher rates of bullying and other forms of abuse than peers at the interpersonal level. At the community level, youth with PTD faced discriminatory environments in school and work and limited availability of community services and healthcare access. At the structural level, knowledge about PTD was limited in the general population, often about the limited portrayals of PTD in the media. We hope that the broader scope of this review serves to help inform future efforts to decrease the stigmatization faced by this group.

Abstract
Suffering from Tourette syndrome (TS) disrupts the daily lives and interpersonal relationships of patients. The psychosocial experiences of young people with TS are not yet clear. The aim of the systematic review is to identify and synthesize the psychosocial experiences of young people with TS. A meta-synthesis was conducted. PubMed, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, and Chinese Electronic Periodical Services databases were searched for articles published from their inception to February 2023. This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute's Guidelines for Systematic Reviews according to a previously developed protocol. We used the confidence of synthesized qualitative findings (ConQual) approach to evaluate the credibility and dependability of the synthesized findings. This review included 12 qualitative studies from Western and Asian countries published between 2005 and 2019, representing 190 young people with TS. We identified five synthesized findings: affliction by intractable TS, TS was negatively perceived in the social and cultural context, self-adjustment in response to social interaction, response to receiving various interventions, and positivity in promoting self-acceptance. The ConQual grade for each generated synthesized finding ranged from low to moderate. The psychosocial experiences of youths living with TS are unique and are influenced by their interpersonal relationships, social context, and cultural framework. The findings recommend that healthcare providers assist young people in developing personalized symptom management strategies and provide guidance and care that meets the needs of each individual.

Abstract
Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disease in which clinical manifestations are essentially present during childhood and adolescence, corresponding to one of the critical development phases. However, its consequences on the daily lives of young patients have been insufficiently investigated. Here, we aimed to investigate this using a statistical text mining approach, allowing for the analysis of a large volume of free textual data. Sixty-two adolescents with Tourette syndrome participated in an interview in which they discussed their daily life (i) in school, (ii) at home, and (iii) with strangers, (iv) the aspect of Tourette syndrome which caused the most difficulty, and (v) their thoughts regarding their future as adults. Following data pre-processing, these corpora were analyzed separately using the IRAMUTEQ software through factorial correspondence analysis to identify the most commonly recurring topics of each corpus, and their relations with clinical features. The main difficulty corpus was directly related to comorbidities of Tourette syndrome. Daily life at home was correlated with executive functioning. Difficulties at school were related to a higher severity of tics. Thoughts regarding future daily life were worst for the youngest patients and were correlated with executive functioning and a higher depression score. Taken altogether, our results highlighted that social stigma was a pervasive topic among our corpora. From a clinical standpoint, tic severity was especially related to difficulties at school, while comorbidities had a high impact on social daily living and cost for managing both tics and symptoms of comorbidities. Abstract
BACKGROUND TS is associated with learning disabilities and educational impairment. Teacher knowledge about TS may have a positive impact on students with TS, but factors associated with teacher knowledge of TS are not known. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, teachers of youth with TS and of a community control group completed a Teacher Understanding of Tourette Syndrome Survey (TUTS), a pilot questionnaire enquiring about self-perceived understanding, teacher knowledge, and sources of information. We compared TUTS scores between TS and control groups and between those who did and did not use specific sources of information about TS using Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. Bivariate correlation analyses were used to evaluate associations between teacher knowledge and potential contributing factors. RESULTS Data from 114 teachers of children with TS and 78 teachers of control subjects were included. Teachers of youth with TS had significantly more knowledge, had higher self-perceived understanding, and used more sources of information than teachers of the control group. Teachers who knew of the Tourette Association of America and who gathered information themselves had higher knowledge about TS than those who did not. CONCLUSION Teachers of children with TS know more about TS and use more sources to learn about TS than teachers of children without TS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that Tourette syndrome (TS) has an impact on academic achievements. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the severity of tics and comorbidities and educational outcomes. METHODS From 2005 to 2007, 395 participants were included in a large cohort (314 with TS and 81 controls) and the mean age was 12.60 ± 2.64 years. The cohort was re-examined after 4 to 8 years (median 5.6) where n = 276 participants (223 with TS and 53 controls) were included with a mean age of 18.52 ± 2.73 years. At both time points, severity of tics and the presence and severity of psychiatric comorbidity were assessed. Educational achievements were assessed through structured interviews. RESULTS Children with TS had a lower passing rate at lower secondary and high school compared to healthy controls. More severe vocal tics were associated with fewer passing lower secondary school at a prospective level. At a cross-sectional level, more severe motor tics were associated with fewer passing high school. Tic severity only influenced children with TS without comorbidity. The severity of comorbidity was found to be associated with the educational level at a longitudinal view, but not cross-sectional. CONCLUSION Overall, children with TS had a lower passing rate at lower secondary school and high school compared to healthy controls. We found that this difference was more likely driven by the severity of comorbidities than tic severity. It is important to be aware of academic achievement in children with TS in order to give them the right support and thereby optimize educational opportunities.

Abstract
This study describes impairment in academic, interpersonal, recreational, and family financial or occupational domains across children in three mutually exclusive diagnostic groups: ever diagnosed with Tourette syndrome (TS), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and both disorders. In 2014, parents reported on impairment and diagnostic status of children aged 4-17 years (n = 3014). Weighted analysis and pairwise t-tests showed more children with ADHD (with or without TS) experienced impairment in overall school performance, writing, and mathematics, relative to children with TS but not ADHD. More children with TS and ADHD had problematic handwriting relative to children with ADHD but not TS. More children with TS and ADHD had problematic interpersonal relationships relative to those with ADHD but not TS. Children with TS and ADHD had higher mean impairment across domains than children with either TS or ADHD. Findings suggest assessing disorder-specific contributions to impairment could inform targeted interventions for TS and ADHD.

Abstract
PURPOSE Recent studies have shown that tics and related comorbidities can cause poorer social adjustment, lower self-esteem, and higher psychosocial stress among adolescents with Tourette syndrome. This study explored the role of self-esteem in mediating the relationship between psychosocial stress and social adjustment among adolescents with Tourette syndrome, and the role of comorbidities in moderating the relationship between self-esteem and social adjustment. DESIGN AND METHODS In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 118 Taiwanese adolescents with Tourette syndrome aged between 12 and 20 years old were recruited via convenience sampling. Their demographic information, Yale Global Tic Severity Scale, stress index for children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome, social adjustment scale for adolescents with Tourette syndrome, and Self-Esteem Scale results were collected. Moderated mediation analysis of the study data was performed with the Hayes's PROCESS macro. RESULTS Our results revealed that the self-esteem of adolescents with Tourette syndrome fully mediates the relationship between their psychosocial stress and social adjustment (B = -0.0703, 95% CI, [-0.0176, -0.001]), while comorbidities moderates the relationship between their self-esteem and social adjustment (B = -0.8416, 95% CI, [-1.4529, -0.2302]). The relationship between self-esteem and social adjustment was more pronounced in adolescents without comorbidities than those with comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS Psychosocial stress correlates negatively with social adjustment and self-esteem, and indirectly influences social adjustment through self-esteem, while comorbidities (particularly their absence) moderates the relationship between self-esteem and social adjustment. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Different self-esteem strengthening programs to enhance social adjustment for adolescents with Tourette syndrome may be developed in future studies.

Abstract
Background Online support communities have become an accessible way of gaining social, emotional, and informational support from peers and may be particularly useful for individuals with chronic conditions. To date, there have been few studies exploring the online support available for tic disorders, such as Tourette syndrome. An exploratory study looking at users’ experiences with using online support communities for tic disorders suggested that members used such communities to share experiences, information, and strategies for tic management. Objective To build on these preliminary findings, this study examined the provision of social support in an online community for Tourette syndrome. Methods Data were collected from one publicly available online support community for Tourette syndrome and tics, from its inception to December 2019, by randomly selecting 10% of posts and their corresponding comments from each year for analysis. This resulted in 510 unique posts and 3802 comments posted from 1270 unique usernames. The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results The findings of this study suggest that users utilized the online community as a multifaceted virtual place where they could share and ask for information about tics, unload and share their feelings arising from living with Tourette syndrome, find people facing similar situations and experiences, and freely share the realities of living with Tourette syndrome. Conclusions The results complement the findings from a preliminary study and suggest that online support communities have a potentially valuable role as a mechanism for sharing and gaining information on illness experiences from similar peers experiencing tics and can promote self-management of tics. Limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental movement characterized by abrupt, rapid, repetitive, and non-rhythmic tics. While TS is not life-threatening, such tics and comorbidities affect a children's physical and mental health and social interactions. Treatment is necessary when the children experience physical discomfort, functional dysfunction, and poor interpersonal interaction and mental health. Common management strategies for TS include psychological interventions and pharmacological treatment. Additionally, it is important to consider the individual needs of youths with TS and reassess the treatment outcomes and the need to receive continuous treatment regularly. This review summarizes the symptom management and nursing care measures for youths with TS. Understanding and listening to the healthcare problems of youths with TS can help providers develop healthcare interventions tailored to the youths' needs. Providing the youths with strategies to reduce the tics' interference with their learning outcomes and helping them develop strategies to cope with diverse interpersonal interactions at school are also important. Further, enhancing acceptance given by parents, teachers, and peers, as well as improving the general public's understanding of TS are important measures that promote the youths' social adjustment as well as their ability to coexist with TS.

Abstract
Purpose of review Tic disorders are common in the pediatric population and are differentiated from other movement disorders by tic suppressibility. Understanding the mechanism of tic suppression may provide new insights to the pathophysiology of tic disorders. This article highlights clinical phenomenology and neuronal correlates of tic suppressibility. Recent findings Recent studies suggest that tic suppressibility exists in children shortly after onset of their tics. Moreover, those who are better able to suppress their tics have better tic outcomes. Interoceptive awareness and automatic action inhibition may be involved in tic suppression. Summary We illustrate a possible underlying mechanism of tic suppressibility and its clinical correlations and implications. New concepts such as interoceptive awareness and action inhibition may help explain tic disorders. Further study will be useful to fill remaining knowledge gaps.

Abstract
Background People living with a tic disorder (TD)—such as Tourette syndrome (TS)—experience many negative psychological and social challenges arising from chronic tics, such as stigmatization from peers and poorer quality of life, and these can impact upon their families too. It can be difficult for this population to access face-to-face support for tics, and so online support communities offer one avenue for support from peers facing similar experiences. However, little is known about how online support communities may be used by people with TS and other TDs, and by others (eg, parents, caregivers) supporting a person with TS/TD. Objective This study aimed to explore users’ experiences of participation in online support communities for TS and TDs. Methods In total, 90 respondents (aged 13-62 years; 62% [56/90] female) from 13 countries completed an online survey exploring their experiences of using online support communities for TS and TDs. Respondents were people living with TS/TD themselves (n=68) or supportive others of someone with TS/TD (eg, parent, sibling, spouse; n=14), or both (n=8). The online survey contained open-ended questions eliciting their self-reported motivations for using online communities, their benefits and drawbacks of participation, and whether online support communities affected offline management of tics. Responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results Seven overarching themes captured experiences of using online support communities for TS/TDs. The overwhelming reason for their use was to find accessible support due to a lack of offline face-to-face support. Online support communities were valued sources of informational and emotional support, and also had a positive impact upon helping users’ psychological well-being. Online communities helped provide a space where people with TS/TDs could feel accepted and reduce the social isolation they felt offline. The suggestible nature of tics and being reminded of the challenging nature of TDs were main disadvantages arising from using online support communities, alongside conflict arising within online communities. Conclusions The findings suggest that online support communities appear to offer valuable informational and emotional support to those living with TS/TD and their families too, especially given the lack of locally available support. This facilitates a sense of community online, which can help users in overcoming long-standing social isolation and aid self-reported improvements in psychosocial well-being. Users reported some drawbacks in engaging with online support communities, such as conflict between different types of users and triggering content, which negatively affected experiences of community participation.

Abstract
Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic motor/vocal tic disorder (CTD) are neurodevelopmental conditions defined by the occurrence of multiple tics. Besides the well-known association with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), rage attacks (RA) represent common and detrimental symptoms for patients. Inorder to explore prevalence of RA in tic disorders, relation to tic severity/comorbidities and available treatments, we performed a systematic literature review based on PRISMA Guidelines. 32 studies published between January 2008 - December 2019 were deemed suitable for the analysis and provided a prevalence of 20-67 %. Most findings showed a direct correlation with tic severity and a significant impact on psychosocial functioning. Although apparently related to comorbid ADHD, RA also frequently occur as independent manifestations. Association with other comorbidities, such as OCD, impulse control and mood disorders has also been reported, not yet fully established. Behavioral interventions appear to be effective, whereas there is limited evidence concerning the efficacy of medication. In TS/CTD, RA may be regarded as a major comorbidity that requires clinical investigation in order to develop personalized treatments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although circumstantial evidence suggests children with tic disorders (TD) experience challenges in handwriting which may be attributed to their tics, few studies have systematically investigated handwriting performance among children with TD. This study examined the relationship between handwriting deficits and TD using a causal comparative research design. METHODS Thirty-four children with TD completed the Test of Handwriting Skills-Revised (THS-R). The overall percentile ranks of the THS-R were analysed to determine if children with TD have lower scores compared to the test's normative values. Writing speed, letter reversals, touching letters and case errors were also evaluated. RESULTS Data revealed the median percentile rank of the THS-R for the participants was significantly lower than the median percentile score of the THS-R for the normative sample. Close to 80% (n = 27) of writing samples were scored below 50th percentile. More than one-third (35.3%, n = 12) of the writing samples were scored greater than one standard deviation below the normative mean on the THS-R. Of the four ancillary scores, 82.4% (n = 28) of the participants' writing samples scored below 50th percentile (in the categories of watch or test further) on case errors and 67.6% (n = 23) scored below 50th percentile on writing speed. CONCLUSION Findings suggested that children with TD took longer to complete the writing task, and committed more case substitution errors than the normative sample of the THS-R and were likely to exhibit handwriting deficits.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study developed the psychometric properties of the social adjustment scale for adolescents with Tourette syndrome (SASATS). DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional study design was conducted. 346 adolescents with Tourette syndrome (TS) were purposively sampled from pediatric outpatient departments at two hospitals in Taiwan. The scale was developed through a phenomenological study of adolescents with TS and by reviewing the literature. The reliability analysis of the SASATS was performed using the corrected item-total correlations coefficients, Cronbach alpha coefficients, and test-retest correlations. An exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to examine the construct validity. RESULTS The content validity index of 0.89 was obtained, and acceptable model fit was achieved according to the explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The final scale had 17- items and four factors: relationship between self and TS, academic performance, family relationship, and peer interaction. Acceptable values of 0.81 and 0.87 were obtained for the test-retest and internal consistency reliabilities, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The SASATS is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating social adjustment status in TS adolescents. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The SASATS is easy to use and offers an effective scale for nurses and healthcare providers in clinical and academic settings. It can quickly measure and detect the psychological functioning of the social adjustment of adolescents with TS during interpersonal interactions. Moreover, interventions can be provided to improve adolescents' social adjustment and promote their mental health.

Abstract
Importance The influence of Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorders on academic performance has not been objectively quantified. Objective To investigate the association of Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorders with objectively measured educational outcomes, adjusting for measured covariates and unmeasured factors shared between siblings and taking common psychiatric comorbidities into account. Design, Setting, and Participants A population-based birth cohort consisting of all individuals born in Sweden from 1976 to 1998 was followed up until December 2013. Individuals with organic brain disorders, mental retardation, and 2 foreign-born parents were excluded. We further identified families with at least 2 singleton full siblings and families with siblings discordant for Tourette syndrome or chronic tic disorders. Exposures Previously validated International Classification of Diseases diagnoses of Tourette syndrome or chronic tic disorders in the Swedish National Patient Register. Main Outcomes and Measures Eligibility to access upper secondary school after compulsory education, finishing upper secondary school, starting a university degree, and finishing a university degree. Results Of the 2 115 554 individuals in the cohort, 3590 had registered a diagnosis of Tourette syndrome or a chronic tic disorder in specialist care (of whom 2822 [78.6%] were male; median [interquartile] age at first diagnosis, 14.0 [11-18] years). Of 726 198 families with at least 2 singleton full siblings, 2697 included siblings discordant for these disorders. Compared with unexposed individuals, people with Tourette syndrome or chronic tic disorders were significantly less likely to pass all core and additional courses at the end of compulsory school (odds ratios ranging from 0.23 [95% CI, 0.20-0.26] for the handcraft textile/wood course to 0.36 [95% CI, 0.31-0.41] for the English language course) and to access a vocational program (adjusted OR [aOR], 0.31; 95% CI, 0.28-0.34) or academic program (aOR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.39-0.47) in upper secondary education. Individuals with the disorders were also less likely to finish upper secondary education (aOR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.32-0.37), start a university degree (aOR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.37-0.46), and finish a university degree (aOR, 0.39; 95% CI, 0.32-0.48). The results were only marginally attenuated in the fully adjusted sibling comparison models. Exclusion of patients with neuropsychiatric comorbidities, particularly attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and pervasive developmental disorders, resulted in attenuated estimates, but patients with Tourette syndrome or chronic tic disorders were still significantly impaired across all outcomes. Conclusions and Relevance Help-seeking individuals with Tourette syndrome or chronic tic disorders seen in specialist settings experience substantial academic underachievement across all educational levels, spanning from compulsory school to university, even after accounting for multiple confounding factors and psychiatric comorbidities.

Abstract
Children with persistent (chronic) tic disorders (PTDs) experience impairment across multiple domains of functioning, but given high rates of other non-tic-related conditions, it is often difficult to differentiate the extent to which such impairment is related to tics or to other problems. The current study used the Child Tourette's Syndrome Impairment Scale - Parent Report (CTIM-P) to examine parents' attributions of their child's impairment in home, school, and social domains in a sample of 58 children with PTD. Each domain was rated on the extent to which the parents perceived that impairment was related to tics versus non-tic-related concerns. In addition, the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) was used to explore the relationship between tic-related impairment and tic severity. Results showed impairment in school and social activities was not differentially attributed to tics versus non-tic-related impairment, but impairment in home activities was attributed more to non-tic-related concerns than tics themselves. Moreover, tic severity was significantly correlated with tic-related impairment in home, school, and social activities, and when the dimensions of tic severity were explored, impairment correlated most strongly with motor tic complexity. Results suggest that differentiating tic-related from non-tic-related impairment may be clinically beneficial and could lead to treatments that more effectively target problems experienced by children with PTDs.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To explore and describe the experience of social adjustment of adolescents with Tourette syndrome in Taiwan. BACKGROUND Although Tourette syndrome is a non-life-threatening disease, the inherent difficulties in controlling tics and comorbidities can cause long-term physical and psychological issues, as well as social maladjustment among adolescents. Good social adjustment can promote mental health among adolescents. Currently, it is not clear how adolescents with Tourette syndrome can self-adjust and maintain harmonious social interaction with others. DESIGN Descriptive phenomenological approach was used in this study. Four criteria were applied to establish the trustworthiness or methodological rigour. METHODS Sixteen adolescents with Tourette syndrome were recruited by purposive sampling from a medical centre in Northern Taiwan. Semistructured one-on-one interviews were performed from March 2014-April 2015 for data collection. Every participant was interviewed once or twice, and each interview lasted for duration of around 60-90 min. Data were analysed with Giorgi's phenomenological method for data analysis. RESULTS Three themes were identified from the adolescent' interviews. The themes were included visible and invisible destitution, moulding a socially acceptable self and coexisting friends and foes. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with Tourette syndrome experienced that tics are often not understood nor accepted during social interactions with others. However, with age and autonomy of adolescents, they were able to adjust and develop a socially acceptable body image and maintain amicable social interactions with others. Accompanied by positive thinking, support from friends and families, the adolescents could achieve good social adjustments for living with Tourette syndrome. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The experiences and feelings highlighted in this study can bring awareness to nurses and healthcare professionals for developing interventions that promote healthy social adjustment and mental health for adolescents with Tourette syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Children with Tourette syndrome (TS) are at risk for a variety of co-occurring conditions and learning and school problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of TS and co-occurring conditions on school measures. METHODS Parent-reported data from the 2007-2008 and 2011-2012 National Survey of Children's Health were combined (n = 129,353 children aged 6-17 yrs). Parent report of health care provider diagnosis of TS; co-occurring mental, emotional, and behavioral conditions; learning and language conditions; and school measures were assessed. School measures included type of school, individual education plan (IEP), number of school days missed, school problems, doing well in school, doing homework, and repeating a grade. Children with TS were compared with those who never had TS on school measures accounting for co-occurring conditions. RESULTS After adjusting for demographics, compared with children without TS, children currently with TS were more likely to have an IEP, have a parent contacted about school problems, and not complete homework. After further adjusting for co-occurring conditions, only IEP status remained statistically significant. Compared with children with mild TS, children with moderate or severe TS were more likely to have an IEP, repeat a grade, encounter school problems, and not care about doing well in school. CONCLUSION Tourette syndrome severity and co-occurring conditions are associated with school challenges and educational service needs. Awareness among health care providers, teachers and parents of the potential challenges related to both TS and co-occurring conditions would help to best support the child's education.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study explored whether Jian-Pi-Zhi-Dong-Decoction (JPZDD) could regulate the metabolism of glutamate (GLU) and its transporters in the striatum to exert anti-tics effects in Tourette syndrome (TS) rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS We randomly assigned 56 Sprague Dawley rats into four groups, each with 14 rats: control, model, tiapride (Tia), and JPZDD. TS groups (model, Tia, and JPZDD) received intraperitoneal injection of 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile for 7 days to establish TS model. Thereafter, rats in the four groups were treated differently once a day for 6 weeks. Behavioral evaluation was performed each week by using stereotypy recording and autonomic activity test. The level of GLU in the striatum was examined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Expression of EAAT1 and VGLUT1 were measured by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and laser scanning confocal microscope. RESULTS Compared with the model group, the stereotypy score and autonomic activity were decreased in Tia and JPZDD groups. Notably, the model group had increased concentration of GLU, which decreased after JPZDD and Tia treatments. In the model group, EAAT1 and glial cells were highly co-expressed and the relative fluorescence intensity (FI) of EAAT1 was significantly lower than that in the control group. Treatment with JPZDD and Tia increased the relative FI of EAAT1. The mRNA level of EAAT1 decreased in the model group compared to that in the control group, although it was significantly elevated following JPZDD or Tia treatment. In the model group, there was low co-expression of VGLUT1 and axon cells and the FI of VGLUT1 was remarkably increased relative to that in the control group and reduced following treatment with JPZDD and Tia. A similar trend was observed in the mRNA and protein expression of VGLUT1, although it was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION The mechanism by which JPZDD alleviated behavioral dysfunction of TS rats may be associated with maintaining normal GLU transport by upregulating EAAT1 and down-regulating VGLUT1 in the striatum.

Abstract
Neurocognitive functioning in Tourette syndrome (TS) has been the subject of intensive research in the past 30 years. A variety of impairments, presumably related to frontal and frontostriatal dysfunctions, have been observed. These impairments were found in various domains, such as attention, memory, executive functions, language, motor and visuomotor functions, among others. In line with contemporary research, other neurocognitive domains have recently been explored in TS, bringing evidence of altered social reasoning, for instance. Therefore, the aims of this review are to give an overview of the neuropsychological dimensions of TS, to report how neuropsychological functions evolve from childhood to adulthood, and to explain how various confounding factors can affect TS patients' performance in neuropsychological tasks. Finally, an important contribution of this review is to show how recent research has confirmed or changed our beliefs about neuropsychological functioning in TS.
