Short sleep duration is associated with specific food intake increase among school-aged children in China: a national cross-sectional study

Sleep deprivation in development of obesity, effects on appetite regulation, energy metabolism, and dietary choices

Sleep deprivation, which is a decrease in duration and quality of sleep, is a common problem in today's life. Epidemiological and interventional investigations have suggested a link between sleep deprivation and overweight/obesity. Sleep deprivation affects homeostatic and non-homoeostatic regulation of appetite, with the food reward system playing a dominant role. Factors such as sex and weight status affect this regulation; men and individuals with excess weight seem to be more sensitive to reward-driven and hedonistic regulation of food intake. Sleep deprivation may also affect weight through affecting physical activity and energy expenditure. In addition, sleep deprivation influences food selection and eating behaviours, which are mainly managed by the food reward system. Sleep-deprived individuals mostly crave for palatable energy-dense foods and have low desire for fruit and vegetables. Consumption of meals may not change but energy intake from snacks increases. The individuals have more desire for snacks with high sugar and saturated fat content. The relationship between sleep and the diet is mutual, implying that diet and eating behaviours also affect sleep duration and quality. Consuming healthy diets containing fruit and vegetables and food sources of protein and unsaturated fats and low quantities of saturated fat and sugar may be used as a diet strategy to improve sleep. Since the effects of sleep deficiency differ between animals and humans, only evidence from human subject studies has been included, controversies are discussed and the need for future investigations is highlighted.

Three-Year School-Based Multicomponent Intervention May Change Fruit and Vegetable Preferences in Primary School Children-A Quasi-Randomized Trial

Preference could be the trigger for fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption in children and could be modified by appropriate intervention to increase the acceptance of FVs. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the three-year school-based multicomponent intervention "Nutri-školica" on the FV preferences of primary school children. It also aimed to explore whether a positive change in FV preferences could lead to an increase in actual FV consumption. The study was conducted in 14 primary schools from the city of Zagreb on 193 children (52.3% boys; age, 7.7 ± 0.4 years; n = 85 in the control group and n = 108 in the intervention group) who completed a preference questionnaire before and after the intervention with a 5-point hedonic smiley-face scale, where 5 means "I like it a lot." The per-protocol approach was used for data analysis (28.3% of children from the study sample). After the intervention, children in the intervention group (before: 3.1 ± 0.8; after: 3.5 ± 0.8) increased their FV preferences significantly more than children in the control group (before: 3.2 ± 0.8; after: 3.3 ± 0.7). Children's FV preferences changed most toward the varieties for which they had the least preferences at the beginning of the study. Participation in the intervention had a stronger effect on changing FV intake than change in FV preferences among primary school children. In summary, the present study highlighted that a targeted intervention can increase children's FV preferences, but that participation in the intervention is substantial for increasing FV intake.

Dietary profile of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea patients, effects of routine educational counseling, and predictors for outcomes

Background

Dietary behavior is a main contributing yet modifiable factor to the body weight status of children and may be involved in the pathophysiology of childhood obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This study aimed to investigate the dietary profile of pediatric OSA patients, effects of educational counseling after adenotonsillectomy, and predictor for disease resolution.

Methods

This observational study included 50 pediatric OSA patients undergoing adenotonsillectomy with routine educational counseling (Group 1), 50 pediatric OSA patients undergoing adenotonsillectomy without formal educational counseling (Group 2), and 303 healthy children without OSA (Control). The three groups were matched by age. The consumption frequency of 25 food items/groups was assessed by the Short Food Frequency Questionnaire. Quality of life was evaluated by the OSA-18 questionnaire. Sleep architecture and OSA severity were measured by standard polysomnography. Between- and within-group comparisons were analyzed by non-parametric approaches and generalized estimating equations. Prediction of disease recovery was performed by multivariable logistic regression models.

Results

Group 1 children consumed fruit drinks with sugar, vegetables, sweets, chocolate, rice, and noodles more frequently than Control Group children. At baseline, the distributions of sex, weight status, OSA-18 scores, and polysomnographic variables were comparable between Group 1 and Group 2. After a 12-month follow-up, Group 1 had better improvements in physical suffering, caregiver concerns, sleep architecture, and mean peripheral oxygen saturation compared to Group 2. Furthermore, Group 1 no longer had excessive consumption of fruit drinks with sugar, chocolate, and noodles; however, food consumption frequencies did not change significantly. Notably, younger age and reduced intake of butter/margarine on bread and noodles were independent predictors of cured OSA in Group 1.

Conclusion

The present study preliminarily characterized an unhealthy dietary profile among pediatric OSA patients and suggested that routine educational counseling in addition to adenotonsillectomy yielded some clinical benefits. Certain items/groups of food frequencies may be associated with disease recovery and further investigations are warranted.

Examination of sleep in relation to dietary and lifestyle behaviors during Ramadan: A multi-national study using structural equation modeling among 24,500 adults amid COVID-19

Background

Of around 2 billion Muslims worldwide, approximately 1.5 billion observe Ramadan fasting (RF) month. Those that observe RF have diverse cultural, ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds and are distributed over a wide geographical area. Sleep is known to be significantly altered during the month of Ramadan, which has a profound impact on human health. Moreover, sleep is closely connected to dietary and lifestyle behaviors.

Methods

This cross-sectional study collected data using a structured, self-administered electronic questionnaire that was translated into 13 languages and disseminated to Muslim populations across 27 countries. The questionnaire assessed dietary and lifestyle factors as independent variables, and three sleep parameters (quality, duration, and disturbance) as dependent variables. We performed structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine how dietary and lifestyle factors affected these sleep parameters.

Results

In total, 24,541 adults were enrolled in this study. SEM analysis revealed that during RF, optimum sleep duration (7-9 h) was significantly associated with sufficient physical activity (PA) and consuming plant-based proteins. In addition, smoking was significantly associated with greater sleep disturbance and lower sleep quality. Participants that consumed vegetables, fruits, dates, and plant-based proteins reported better sleep quality. Infrequent consumption of delivered food and infrequent screen time were also associated with better sleep quality. Conflicting results were found regarding the impact of dining at home versus dining out on the three sleep parameters.

Conclusion

Increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables, and plant-based proteins are important factors that could help improve healthy sleep for those observing RF. In addition, regular PA and avoiding smoking may contribute to improving sleep during RF.

Sleep duration and eating behaviours among adolescents: a scoping review

INTRODUCTION

In the past decade, investigations of the relationship between sleep duration and eating behaviours have been emerging; however, a formal synthesis of the literature focussed on adolescent populations has not yet been conducted. We conducted a scoping review of the literature examining the relationship between sleep duration and eating behaviours in adolescents. Gaps in the research and directions for future research were identified based on the findings.

METHODS

A systematic search was employed on four research databases: PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL and Scopus; relevant grey literature was also reviewed. Studies that reported on the relationship between sleep duration and eating behaviours among high school-aged adolescents were included in the review. Data were extracted, charted and synthesized into a narrative. Consistent with the purpose of a scoping review, the methodological quality of the studies was not appraised. Stakeholders were consulted to validate the findings and provide insight into the interpretation and identification of pressing gaps in the research that remain to be addressed.

RESULTS

In total, 61 studies published between 2006 and 2021 met the criteria for review. Existing research focussed heavily on examining sleep duration in relation to intake of food from certain food groups, beverages and processed foods, and relied on a population study design, cross-sectional analyses and self-report measures.

CONCLUSION

Future research is needed to understand the link between sleep duration and eating-related cognition, eating contexts and disordered eating behaviours in order to better understand how ensuring sufficient sleep among adolescents can be leveraged to support healthier eating practices and reduce diet-related risks.

Sleep and diet patterns of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns

Introduction: College students experience high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress during the academic year as they juggle the competing demands of young adulthood and their studies. The COVID-19 pandemic heightened this experience. Healthful diets and sleep patterns are associated with improved physical and mental well-being. Purpose: The goal of this study was to identify if there was a relationship between changes in sleep and diet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A group of college students was surveyed online using Qualtrics software during the first two months of lockdown restrictions at a large, midwestern university in the United States. Results: More participants reported no changes in diet and increased hours of sleep than reported declines or improvements in diet, or reductions or retained sleep patterns. Participants who maintained their diet were likely to maintain their current sleep pattern. Conclusion: College students demonstrated resilience in healthful behaviors during the first two months of COVID-19 lockdown.

The Association Between Frequent Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake and Sleep Duration in School Children: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background

Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) maybe association with children's sleep pattern. However, few studies have considered this association in Asia, especially in school children. This study investigated the relationship between children's consumption frequency of such beverages and their sleep duration.

Methods

Participants aged 6–12 years were analyzed from two survey data in 2012 and 2013–2016 Nutrition and Health Surveys in Taiwan. A total of 2,628 participants were included in the analysis (2012, N = 1,267; 2013–2016, N = 1,361). Beverages weekly consumption were divided into low and high intake groups by medians cut-off points. The sleep variables were the sleep duration at night (including school days and weekends) and sleep debt. After controlling the confounders, the correlation between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and sleep duration was examined using multinomial logistic regression analysis.

Results

The students slept for an average of 8.8 h on school days and 9.7 h on weekends. Relative to the low SSB intake group, the high intake group exhibited shorter sleep durations on school days (P < 0.001), greater sleep debt (P = 0.049). In logistic regression, high intake group were more likely to sleep for <8.5 h on school days (OR = 1.67, P = 0.002) and exhibit >2 h of sleep debt than low intake group (OR = 1.41, P = 0.022).

Conclusions

Children who had consumed sugar-sweetened beverages frequently slept for shorter durations at night on school days and exhibited greater sleep debt. The causal relationship was not clear. Nonetheless, these two factors are important in promoting children health.

Telehealth Secure Solution to Provide Childhood Obesity Monitoring

Childhood obesity causes not only medical and psychosocial problems, it also reduces the life expectancy of the adults that they will become. On a large scale, obese adults adversely affect labor markets and the gross domestic product of countries. Monitoring the growth charts of children helps to maintain their body weight within healthy parameters according to the World Health Organization. Modern technologies allow the use of telehealth to carry out weight control programs and monitoring to verify children's compliance with the daily recommendations for risk factors that can be promoters of obesity, such as insufficient physical activity and insufficient sleep hours. In this work, we propose a secure remote monitoring and supervision scheme of physical activity and sleep hours for the children based on telehealth, multi-user networks, chaotic encryption, and spread spectrum, which, to our knowledge, is the first attempt to consider this service for safe pediatric telemedicine. In experimental results, we adapted a recent encryption algorithm in the literature for the proposed monitoring scheme using the assessment of childhood obesity as an application case in a multi-user network to securely send and receive fictitious parameters on childhood obesity of five users through the Internet by using just one communication channel. The results show that all the monitored parameters can be transmitted securely, achieving high sensitivity against secret key, enough secret key space, high resistance against noise interference, and 4.99 Mb/sec in computational simulations. The proposed scheme can be used to monitor childhood obesity in secure telehealth application.

The impact of nutrition on sleep in people with an intellectual disability: An integrative literature review

BACKGROUND

People with intellectual disabilities are more likely to experience sleep problems. Sleep can impact on health and well-being; therefore, evidence-based interventions are required to improve sleep in this population.

METHOD

An integrative literature review was conducted on the impact of nutrition on sleep in people with intellectual disabilities. Following screening of papers (n = 289), 14 papers met the inclusion criteria.

RESULTS

Themes related to nutrition and improved overall well-being, use of nutritional supplements, specific foods, links to health comorbidities and food fussiness.

CONCLUSION

This is the first comprehensive review completed on nutritional interventions to improve sleep in people with intellectual disabilities. Dietary patterns may be an important factor to improving the quality and quantity of sleep. However, the current literature regarding the benefit of improved nutrition on sleep in people with an intellectual disability needs to be interpreted with caution.

Adolescent-Reported Food Insecurity: Correlates of Dietary Intake and School Lunch Behavior

Much of what is known about food insecurity (FI) experiences for young people is based on caregiver report. As such, our understanding of relationships between youth FI and dietary intake (DI) may be limited, particularly among adolescents who often eat away from home. This study examined relationships between youth-reported past-month FI, past-week DI, and school lunch behavior. Data are from middle and high school participants in the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey (N = 125,375), one of the longest-running youth surveys in the US. Logistic regression assessed relationships between FI and DI, including fruit, vegetable, milk, sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB), and fast food consumption, and school lunch behavior, adjusting for demographic, physical, and emotional health indicators. Past-month FI was associated with reduced odds of meeting minimum thresholds for daily fruit, vegetable, and milk intake, and increased odds of daily SSB and frequent fast food consumption. Among food-insecure students, no participation in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or NSLP participation uncertainty was associated with increased odds of skipping lunch. Findings suggest the importance of clinical and community innovations to prevent the loss of nutritional quality in favor of energy density for youth and families experiencing FI.

Association Between Sleep Duration and Intelligence Quotient in 6-Year-Old Children

BACKGROUND

Sufficient sleep during childhood is important for cognitive functions such as learning and successful school performance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of sleep duration on the intelligence quotient (IQ) of 6-year-old children and aimed to analyze whether these effects differed by sex.

METHODS

The IQ of 538 6-year-old Korean participants from the cohort study, "The Environment and Development of Children," was measured during follow-up using the Korean Educational Developmental Institute's Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. The total, verbal, and performance IQ scores were evaluated. The relationship between sleep duration and IQ scores after adjusting for maternal age, maternal educational level, maternal occupation, maternal IQ, exposure to secondhand smoking, gestational age, and monthly age and birth season was also assessed.

RESULTS

Longer sleep duration was significantly associated with improved verbal IQ measures (β 0.55; p value 0.030). After stratifying participants by sex, a significant association was observed between sleep duration and total, verbal, and performance IQ scores in boys (total IQ 2.49, p value 0.012; verbal IQ 0.75, p value: 0.037; performance IQ 0.73, p value 0.048), but not in girls.

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicated that only boys show a significant association between IQ scores and sleep duration. These findings support the hypothesis that sleep duration is associated with IQ, in a sex dependent manner. Future studies are needed for a thorough evaluation of the connection between sleep duration and health outcome in young children.

Sleep duration and behavioral correlates in middle and high school students: a cross-sectional study in Zhejiang province, China

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the sleep duration and correlates from lifestyle, dietary and weight control behaviors in Chinese adolescents.

METHODS

Data were from 2017 Zhejiang Youth Risk Behavior Survey. A total of 17059 adolescents were included in this study and sleep duration and other behaviors information was collected via a self-reported questionnaire. Regression coefficients (β), calculated by multivariable linear regression, were used to assess the effects of related behaviors on sleep duration, adjusting for potential confounding factors.

RESULTS

Overall, the mean sleep duration in adolescents was 7.99 h. Ever smoking, engaging in moderate physical activity and muscle strengthening activity, attending physical education classes, and watching television were significantly associated with longer sleep duration (P _trend ≦0.01 for all). Adolescents with breakfast, fruits, vegetables, milk and soft drinks intake were more likely to have longer sleep duration (P _trend <0.05 for all). Weight perception of overweight and weight control behaviors including exercising and eating less food, fewer calories were significantly associated with the short sleep duration (P _trend <0.05 for all).

CONCLUSION

Chinese adolescents slept less than the counterparts in Western countries. Various lifestyle, dietary and weight control behaviors were associated with sleep duration.

Association between short sleep duration and metabolic syndrome in Chinese children and adolescents

BACKGROUND

The relationship between short sleep duration and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in children and adolescents has been inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the association between short sleep duration and MetS in Chinese children and adolescents.

METHODS

Data were from a cross-sectional survey conducted in Jinan, China between September 2013 and November 2014. A total of 1008 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years were included. Sleep duration was self-reported by participants and categorized as normal or short (<9 h in children aged 6-12 years or <8 h in adolescents aged 13-17 years) according to the recommendations of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. MetS was defined based on the modified criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III.

RESULTS

After adjusted for sex, age, parental education levels, and midpoint of sleep, compared with normal sleep duration, short sleep duration was associated with increased odds of MetS (odds ratio [OR]: 1.79, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09-2.95) and abdominal obesity (OR: 1.60, 95% CI: 1.14-2.25). In the subgroups stratified by age and sex, compared with normal sleep duration, short sleep duration was associated with increased odds of abdominal obesity (OR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.07-5.13) in girls aged 6-12 years; short sleep duration was associated with increased odds of MetS (OR: 2.49, 95% CI: 1.06-5.84), abdominal obesity (OR: 2.30, 95% CI: 1.10-4.82), and high TG (OR: 2.63, 95% CI: 1.11-6.21) in boys aged 13-17 years.

CONCLUSIONS

Short sleep duration associated with higher odds for MetS in Chinese children and adolescents. Interventions to improve sleep duration could help prevent and control MetS among children and adolescents.
