Abstract
Assessing dietary habits with validated questionnaires is crucial for achieving reliable results in health research. The aim of this study was the development and validation of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in an 18-30-year-old Serbian population. A total of 93 participants completed the FFQ and three 24 h dietary recalls (24 hR). Pearson and intraclass correlations between FFQ and 24 hR intakes were assessed and were de-attenuated and energy-adjusted. Bland-Altman plots were generated, and quintiles of energy, water, fiber, and macronutrient intake were analyzed with contingency tables. Adjustments for sex differences were included. The validity of the FFQ varied, with significant correlations for energy, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and vitamin B12, vitamin C and vitamin D. Misclassification rates were generally low. Bland-Altman plots indicated good agreement between methods. It can be concluded that the validated FFQ is a promising tool for dietary assessment in the Serbian population. Results for several nutrients align closely with previous studies. The new FFQ is a useful tool for dietary assessment in the Serbian population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A common tactic used by athletes to improve performance, lessen tiredness, and hasten recovery is dietary supplementation. We aimed to assess the role of a microalgae dietary liquid supplement additivated with Copper 22.5% NRV in water polo players' performance. METHODS Twenty male water polo players were split into two groups: ten (spirulina group) took a twice-daily nutritional supplement containing 15 mL of spirulina liquid extract (titrated in Phycocyanin 1 mg/mL) and additivated with Copper 22.5% NRV for eight weeks, and ten (the placebo group) did not take the supplement. Subjective evaluations were finished using the Athlete's Subjective Performance Scale (ASPS). Levels of the biomarker creatine phosphokinase (CPK) were also assessed. RESULTS The spirulina group's mean total ASPS score increased significantly from baseline to follow-up and was significantly better than that of the placebo group (p < 0.001). Conversely, ASPS ratings in the placebo group slightly decreased. A positive correlation between spirulina supplementation and less severe ASPS was found using correlation matrix analysis. However, there was a slight difference in CPK levels from the baseline to the follow-up in the spirulina group. CONCLUSIONS A dietary supplement comprising spirulina and copper may help water polo players' subjective performance measurements by lowering muscular tension. Larger, randomized controlled trials are yet required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is linked with obesity, while limited evidence on its relationship with body fat distribution. Herein, we investigated the associations between serum TMAO and longitudinal change of fat distribution in this prospective cohort study. METHODS Data of 1964 participants (40-75y old) from Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study (GNHS) during 2008-2014 was analyzed. Serum TMAO concentration was quantified by HPLC-MS/MS at baseline. The body composition was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at each 3-y follow-up. Fat distribution parameters were fat-to-lean mass ratio (FLR) and trunk-to-leg fat ratio (TLR). Fat distribution changes were derived from the coefficient of linear regression between their parameters and follow-up duration. RESULTS After an average of 6.2-y follow-up, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and linear regression displayed women with higher serum TMAO level had greater increments in trunk FLR (mean ± SD: 1.47 ± 4.39, P-trend = 0.006) and TLR (mean ± SD: 0.06 ± 0.24, P-trend = 0.011). Meanwhile, for women in the highest TMAO tertile, linear mixed-effects model (LMEM) analysis demonstrated the annual estimated increments (95% CI) were 0.03 (95% CI: 0.003 - 0.06, P = 0.032) in trunk FLR and 1.28 (95% CI: -0.17 - 2.73, P = 0.083) in TLR, respectively. In men, there were no similar significant observations. Sensitivity analysis yielded consistent results. CONCLUSION Serum TMAO displayed a more profound correlation with increment of FLR and TLR in middle-aged and older community-dwelling women in current study. More and further studies are still warranted in the future. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT03179657.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The dual existence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and obesity within a single individual may describe a combined adverse health effects, including impaired quality of life and increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Oxidative stress is a contributing factor to the pathogenesis of obesity. Meanwhile, dietary antioxidants may improve the antioxidant defense system and thereby decrease oxidative injury. Dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is usually used to investigate the potential health effects of dietary antioxidant intake on several oxidative stress induced chronic diseases. This study aimed to examine the association of dietary TAC with obesity-related features in T2DM patients. METHODS The present study included 254 type 2 diabetes outpatients with a mean (SD) age of 54.52 (7.21) years and mean (SD) diabetes duration of 8.2 (6.4) years. Data on dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Dietary TAC was estimated by ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) method. Anthropometric, clinical and lifestyle characteristics were all collected. RESULTS In linear regression analyses, dietary antioxidant capacity was inversely associated with body mass index (β = -0,231; 95% CI, -0,419 to -0,042), waist circumference (β = -0,427; 95% CI, -0,849 to -0,006) and fat mass percentage (β = -0,328; 95% CI, -0,545 to -0,112) independently of the assessed confounding variables. Interestingly, dietary TAC showed positive and significant associations with vitamin A, vitamin C, β-carotene, magnesium, folic acid and iron intakes, after adjusting for age and daily energy intake. CONCLUSIONS Higher intake of dietary TAC was in association with lower indices of general and central obesity in T2DM patients. Therefore, dietary recommendations for counteracting obesity in patients with T2DM should take into account a high dietary TAC.

Abstract
Introduction The growing prevalence of vegetarianism determines the need for comprehensive study of the impact of these diets on health and particularly on bone metabolism. We hypothesized that significant dietary differences between vegans, lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and omnivores also cause significant differences in their nutrient status, which may affect bone health. Methods The study assessed dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry parameters in lumbar spine and femoral neck, average nutrient intake, serum nutrient concentrations, serum PTH levels, and urinary pH among 46 vegans, 38 lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and 44 omnivores. Results There were no differences in bone mineral density (BMD) between the groups. However, the parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were still higher in vegans compared to omnivores, despite the same prevalence of hyperparathyroidism in all groups. These findings may probably be explained by the fact that each group had its own "strengths and weaknesses." Thus, vegans and, to a lesser extent, lacto-ovo-vegetarians consumed much more potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, and vitamins B6, B9, and C. At the same time, the diet of omnivores contained more protein and vitamins D and B12. All the subjects consumed less vitamin D than recommended. More than half of vegans and omnivores had insufficiency or even deficiency of vitamin D in the blood. Low serum concentrations of manganese with its quite adequate intake are also noteworthy: its deficiency was observed in 57% of vegans, 79% of lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and 63% of omnivores. Discussion Currently, it is no longer possible to conclude that lacto-ovo-vegetarians have lower BMD than omnivores, as our research supported. Vegans in our study also did not demonstrate lower BMD values, only higher PTH blood concentrations, compared to omnivores, however, a large number of studies, including recent, show the opposite view. In this regard, further large-scale research is required. Vegans and lacto-ovo-vegetarians now have a variety of foods fortified with vitamins D and B12, as well as calcium. There is also a great diversity of ethically sourced dietary supplements. The found low concentrations of manganese require further investigation.

Abstract
This study aimed to validate a semiquantitative electronic food frequency questionnaire (eFFQ) in estimating the intake of a comprehensive list of nutrients and bioactive compounds among adults from six regions of Argentina using multiple 24 h dietary recall (24HR) as a reference. A total of 163 adults completed two administrations of the eFFQ and four 24HRs. The paired t-test/Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Spearman/Pearson correlations, cross-classification, weighted kappa statistics, and Bland-Altman plots were employed to determine relative validity. To determine reproducibility, intraclass correlations (ICC), cross-classification, and weighted kappa statistics were calculated. For relative validity, crude correlations ranged from 0.15 to 0.57; energy adjustment and de-attenuation slightly improved most of these correlations. In cross-classification analysis, agreements within one quintile adjacent to exact agreement (EA ± 1) ranged from 52.2% to ~74%; extreme misclassifications were < 7%. For reproducibility, the crude ICC ranged from 0.29 to 0.85, showing moderate to good correlations for most nutrients. Cross-classification analysis showed agreement levels for the EA ± 1 quintile of 70.6% to 87.7%. Weighted kappa values ranged from 0.21 to 0.62. The results show that this eFFQ is relatively valid in ranking adults according to their nutrient intake and has an acceptable reproducibility, yet it slightly overestimates the intake of most nutrients.

Abstract
Healthy dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet (MeDi), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) have been evaluated for their potential association with health outcomes. However, the lack of standardisation in scoring methodologies can hinder reproducibility and meaningful cross-study comparisons. Here we provide a reproducible workflow for generating the MeDi, DASH and MIND dietary pattern scores from frequently used dietary assessment tools including the 24-h recall tool and two variations of FFQ. Subjective aspects of the scoring process are highlighted and have led to a recommended reporting checklist. This checklist enables standardised reporting with sufficient detail to enhance the reproducibility and comparability of their outcomes. In addition to these aims, valuable insights in the strengths and limitations of each assessment tool for scoring the MeDi, DASH and MIND diet can be utilised by researchers and clinicians to determine which dietary assessment tool best meets their needs.

Abstract
Introduction Currently, there are no validated food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) for evaluating nutrient intake in Ukrainian adults. This study aimed to adapt and validate the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer Food Frequency Questionnaire (EPIC-Norfolk FFQ) for this population group. Methods Adults aged 18-54 years (n=90) living in different regions of Ukraine completed the new Ukrainian version of the EPIC-Norfolk FFQ and provided information about their 24-hour dietary recall. Raw and energy-adjusted data were analysed using Spearman's correlation coefficients, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test, cross-classification method, weighted kappa and Bland-Altman analysis. Results Correlations ranged from 0.0738 (retinol equivalents) to 0.458 (total energy and phosphorus) and were statistically significant for all nutrients except cholesterol and vitamin A (as retinol and retinol equivalents). The percentage of participants classified into the same and adjacent quartiles ranged from 61.11% (vitamin A as retinol equivalents) to 81.11% (vitamin D). Gross misclassification into the opposite quartile ranged from 3.33% (magnesium) to 10% (cholesterol, vitamin A as retinol and retinol equivalents). Using the weighted kappa, most nutrients had a fair agreement (ĸ=0.21-0.40). Energy adjustment did not affect the results for most nutrients. Bland-Altman plots confirmed overestimation of the absolute intake of most nutrients and appeared to underestimate total sugars intake by FFQ; nevertheless, there was good agreement between the two methods. Conclusion The new Ukrainian version of the FFQ demonstrated reasonable relative validity for ranking an individual's nutrient intake. The overestimation of the absolute intake of most nutrients is comparable to or even less than that in other FFQ validation studies. We cannot recommend the current Ukrainian version of the FFQ for the assessment of vitamin A (as retinol and retinol equivalents) consumption because of significant differences in results between the two methods.

Abstract
AIMS A new approach to a healthy diet is the assessment of dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC). The aim of this study was to assess the dietary TAC among Moroccan Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients and identify the main food sources contributing to the total antioxidant capacity intake. METHODS A total of 254 patients with T2DM was included in the study. The usual dietary intakes were assessed by means of a validated food frequency questionnaire. The dietary TAC was estimated using published databases of the antioxidant content of foods measured by the FRAP (ferric ion reducing antioxidant potential) method. RESULTS The mean (SD) dietary TAC of the studied type 2 diabetes patients was 10.86 (3.42) mmol/day. Correlation analyses showed a positive association between dietary TAC and the consumption of healthy food groups, such as fruits and vegetables. Tea and coffee beverages (38.6%), vegetables (21.9%), cereals and pulses (18.8%), fruits and fruit juices (12.4%) were major food sources of dietary antioxidant intake. The relatively short list of twenty food items that contributed most to dietary TAC presented an important explanation of roughly 94%. These included tea, coffee, broad beans, artichoke, pepper, beetroot, sweet potatoes, pomegranate, mandarin, figs, strawberry, orange juice, olives, cashew nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, dchicha and white beans. CONCLUSIONS This study supplies baseline dietary TAC data for Moroccan T2DM patients that may help to elucidate which aspects of the eating habits and behaviours require improvement and provide the opportunity to develop dietary guidelines as part of the nutritional diabetes management.

Abstract
Introduction Theoretical models of health behavior are important guides for disease prevention and detection, treatment and rehabilitation, and promotion and maintenance of physical and mental health, but there are no intervention studies related to differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) that use theoretical models of health as a guide. In this study, we used a microblogging platform as an intervention vehicle and mobile patient-doctor interactive health education as a means of intervention, with the aim of improving the health behaviors of DTC patients as well as the corresponding clinical outcomes. Methods This research project is a quantitative methodological study, and the trial will be a single-blind, single-center randomized controlled trial conducted at the Fourth Hospital of Harbin Medical University in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. The study subjects are patients over 18 years of age with differentiated thyroid cancer who were given radioactive iodine-131 therapy as well as endocrine therapy after radical surgery for thyroid cancer. The intervention group will receive MTM-mhealth, and the realization of health education will rely on the smart terminal WeChat platform. Routine discharge education will be given to the control group at discharge. The primary outcome will be change in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from baseline and at 3 and 6 months of follow-up, and secondary outcomes will include change in self-management behavior, social cognitive and psychological, and metabolic control. Discussion This study will explore a feasible mHealth intervention program applied to a population of DTC patients using the Multi-theory model of health behavior change (MTM) as a guide, with the aim of evaluating the MTM-based intervention program for clinical outcome improvement in DTC patients, as well as determining the effectiveness of the MTM-based intervention program in improving self-management skills in DTC patients. The results of this study will indicate the feasibility as well as the effectiveness of the application of health theoretical modeling combined with mHealth applications in disease prognostic health management models, and provide policy recommendations and technological translations for the development of mobility-based health management applications in the field of health management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS In Saudi Arabia, very limited studies have been conducted to evaluate the validity of culturally appropriate food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The aim of this study was to validate a newly designed FFQ against two reference methods in Saudi adults. METHODS A new FFQ adapted from the Block FFQ was completed via interview and validated against three-day food records (3DFRs; n = 126) and 24-hour urinary urea nitrogen (UUN)-based protein intake estimates (n = 118) in adult Saudis living in Jeddah. FFQ-estimated nutrient intake was compared to the 3DFR and UUN methods using Pearson's correlations (r), Bland-Altman plots, and weighted kappa (κw) statistics. RESULTS This study included 126 participants (80 females and 46 males). The FFQ generally overreported nutrient intakes compared to the reference methods. The FFQ was strongly correlated with 3DFRs for energy, protein, carbohydrate, and total fat (r > 0.7); moderately correlated with cholesterol (r = 0.55) and iron (r = 0.44); and weakly correlated with the other micronutrients (r = 0.1-0.3). A moderate positive correlation for protein intake was found (r = 0.62) between the FFQ and 24-hour UUN method. The Bland-Altman analysis indicated the FFQ had an acceptable level of agreement with no significant proportional bias (P > 0.05) with the 3DFRs for energy, protein, total fat, and iron and with protein intake. Similarly, an acceptable level of agreement was found between the FFQ and the 24-hour UUN method for estimating protein intake. Cross-classification analysis showed that ≥ 50% of participants were ranked within the same quartile for energy, protein, and total fat. The FFQ showed good agreement with the 3DFRs for energy and protein (κw ≥ 0.61) and acceptable agreement with protein intake. An acceptable agreement was reported between the FFQ and 24-hour UUN method (κw = 0.56). Separate analyses of females and males showed stronger correlations and agreements between the FFQ and the two reference methods only in females. CONCLUSION The developed FFQ is an effective and valid tool for assessing dietary intake in Saudi adults. However, it still requires future optimization to improve its validity.

Abstract
Background The Mediterranean diet (MD) has been recognized by several studies as beneficial for health improvement. The degree of adherence to this diet has also been evaluated using several scales, particularly time-consuming measures such as the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). This study aims to (a) adapt into Moroccan Arabic the 14-item Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), which is a simple and brief tool that assesses the degree of diet adherence and was used in the Prevencion con Dieta Mediterranea (PREDIMED) study, and (b) determine its psychometric properties. Methods MEDAS consists of 12 questions on food frequency and two on dietary habits, with each question scoring 0 or 1. To translate and adapt the scale, Beaton et al.'s six-step cross-cultural adaptation process guidelines were followed. The screener's psychometric properties were tested on staff at the CHU Mohammed VI (Tangier), i.e., the hospital's administrative and maintenance staff, excluding medical and paramedical personnel. Internal consistency was evaluated using the Kuder-Richardson 21 (K-R 21) formula, while test-retest reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Moreover, criterion validity was performed using the Spearman correlation between the MEDAS and the MedQ-Sus scores. Discrimination performance was also tested using the receiving operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results The validation study included 160 participants who completed both questionnaires. The K-R 21 formula estimated strong internal consistency in the range of 0.851. The ICC of test-retest reliability was significant at 0.876 95% CI [0.831-0.909]. The MEDAS score correlated significantly with the comparative MedQ-Sus score (Spearman's rho = 0.494 95% CI [0.363-0.606], p < 0.001). Also, MEDAS can strongly distinguish between MD adherence and non-adherence (optimal cut-off = 7.5, sensitivity 0.81, specificity = 0.57), with an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.743 95% CI [0.667-0.819], p < 0.001. Conclusion The results showed that MEDAS is a valid and time-saving instrument for assessing adherence to the MD in the Moroccan population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer burden is rising rapidly in Nigeria, the most populous country in sub-Saharan Africa; this trend may in part be attributable to diet. We developed and validated a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess regional diet in Nigeria. METHODS We recruited 68 adult participants from rural and urban settings in South West Nigeria. We developed an FFQ administered at baseline and assessed its validity using 3 dietary recalls (baseline, 7 days post baseline, 3 months post baseline). We calculated Spearman's rank correlation coefficients and energy-adjusted de-attenuated correlation coefficients for food items and macronutrients. We evaluated cross-classification using quartiles of macronutrient intake. RESULTS Energy-adjusted de-attenuated food item correlations between the FFQ and dietary recalls ranged from -0.08 (smoked beef/goat) to 0.73 (fried snacks) for the average intake from the first 2 recalls (2DR) and from -0.05 (smoked beef/goat) to 0.75 (smoked fish) for the average of all 3 recalls (3DR). Macronutrient correlations ranged from 0.15 (fat) to 0.37 (fiber) for the 2DR and from 0.08 (fat) to 0.41 (carbohydrates) for the 3DR. The percent of participants classified in the same quartile ranged from 16.4% (fat) to 32.8% (fiber, protein) for the 2DR and from 25.6% (fat) to 34.9% (carbohydrates) for the 3DR. Agreement improved when including adjacent quartiles, from 65.5% (carbohydrates) to 70.5% (fat, fiber) for the 2DR and from 62.8% (protein) to 76.8% (carbohydrate) for the 3DR. CONCLUSION Our semi-quantitative FFQ was reasonably valid for ranking intake of certain foods and macronutrients in adults in South West Nigeria.

Abstract
The increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) worldwide is particularly worrisome, as no medication has been approved to treat the disease. Lifestyle modifications aimed at promoting weight loss and weight maintenance remain the current first-line treatment for NAFLD. However, due to the lack of standard and scientific guidance and out-of-hospital supervision, long-term outcomes of lifestyle interventions for patients with NAFLD are often unsatisfactory. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic aggravated this dilemma. At the same time, digital therapeutics (DTx) are expected to be a new method for the convenient management and treatment of patients with NAFLD and are attracting a great deal of attention. DTx, which provide evidence-based medicine through software programs for remote intervention in preventing, treating, or managing diseases, overcome the drawbacks of traditional treatment. The efficacy of the approach has already been demonstrated for some chronic diseases, but DTx have not been fully developed for NAFLD. This study reviews the concepts, clinical value, and practical applications related to DTx, with an emphasis on recommendations based on unmet needs for NAFLD. A better understanding of the current state will help clinicians and researchers develop high-quality, standardized, and efficient DTx products, with the aim of optimizing the prognosis of patients with NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Assessment of dietary intake is fundamental for evaluating the interrelationships between diet and disease. The present study aimed to develop and validate the semiquantitative Cypriot food frequency questionnaire (CyFFQ). METHODS A 171-item paper-and-pencil semiquantitative interview-administered FFQ was developed, including local foods and culturally specific meals commonly consumed among Cypriot adults. FFQ reproducibility was assessed by comparing the energy-adjusted daily macro- and micronutrients intake at baseline (FFQ1) and 1 year later (FFQ2) using a Wilcoxon matched pairs signed rank test and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) in a random sample of Cypriot adults. FFQ relative validity was evaluated by comparing the intake as estimated by FFQ2 with that obtained from the average of three 24-h recalls taken over the year between FFQ1 and FFQ2. Associations between nutrient intakes estimated using FFQ2 and the 24-h recalls were assessed using Spearman rank correlation and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess agreement between the FFQ and the 24-h recalls. RESULTS Among eligible participants, 68 (78%) completed the study (44.1% males, aged 30.5-47.5 years). The energy-adjusted intakes of macro- and micronutrients did not significantly differ between the two FFQs, excluding magnesium. The FFQ2 and the averaged 24-h recalls were significantly correlated for most macro- and micronutrients. The median (interquartile) ICC for all macro- and micronutrients was 0.46 (0.38-0.52) (p < 0.05). Agreement was satisfactory (>30%) for most micro- and macronutrients. Bland-Altman plots also confirmed good agreement between the two methods. CONCLUSIONS The CyFFQ is a valid and reliable tool for assessing dietary consumption in Cypriot adults.

Abstract
All dietary assessment methods inevitably introduce measurement errors, which should ideally be considered during data analysis and interpretation. Methodological studies should be conducted to address how well a given assessment method captures dietary intake and to highlight the extent and direction of the measurement error. Within a subgroup of the Hordaland Health Study (HUSK3), we examined the relative validity of a web-based food frequency questionnaire (WebFFQ) by comparing its estimates of mean daily intake of nutrients and foods with estimated mean daily intakes from repeated administrations of 24-hour dietary recall interviews (24-HDRs). Men and women born between 1950 and 1951 were recruited from HUSK3. The participants (n = 67) completed a WebFFQ and three non-consecutive 24-HDRs over the course of a year. Relative validity was assessed using Spearman's rank correlation, crosstab analysis and Bland-Altman plots. Linear regression models were used to compute the calibration coefficients. The estimated correlation coefficients were acceptable or strong for all nutrients and foods except iodine (rs = 0⋅19). The highest correlation coefficient was found for juice (rs = 0⋅71), whereas the lowest correlation coefficient was found for iodine (rs = 0⋅19). Cross-classification by quartiles categorised more than 72 % of the participants into the same or adjacent quartiles using the two methods. Few data points fell outside the limits of agreement in the Bland-Altman plots. Calibration coefficients ranged from 0⋅10 (wholegrain) to 0⋅81 (alcohol). Our findings suggest that the WebFFQ has reasonable ranking abilities for all the included nutrients and foods, except for iodine.

Abstract
Background Diet is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but there is still a lack of tools to assess dietary intakes of this high-risk population in Ningxia, China. Objective We aim to evaluate the validity and reliability of the semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) in the groups in Ningxia using a 24-hour dietary recall method. Method Two hundred five participants were included in the analysis. The two FFQs were 6 months apart, and during this time two 24-hour dietary recalls (24HDRs) were completed. Statistical methods were compared using inter-class correlation coefficient, unadjusted, energy-adjusted, de-attenuated correlation coefficient, quartile classification, weighted K values, and 95% limits of agreement (LOA). Results The inter-class correlation coefficients between FFQ1 and FFQ2 ranged from 0.25 to 0.73. The number of subjects classified as identical or adjacent was 72.2 to 85.9%. The crude correlation coefficient between FFQs and 24HDRs was 0.30 ~ 0.81, the energy-adjusted correlation coefficient was 0.16 ~ 0.83, and the de-attenuated correlation coefficient was 0.19 ~ 0.98. Weighted k statistics and Bland-Altman plots showed acceptable agreement between FFQs and 24HDRs. Conclusion The FFQ developed for the population at high risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in areas of Ningxia can be used to measure the dietary intake of nutrients and food groups reliably and validly. Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the reproducibility and validity of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ) developed for vegetarians and omnivores in Harbin, China. Participants (36 vegetarians and 64 omnivores) administered SQFFQ at baseline (SQFFQ1) and six months later (SQFFQ2) to assess the reproducibility. The 24 h recalls (24 HRs) for three consecutive days were completed between the administrations of two SQFFQs to determine the validity. For reproducibility, Pearson correlation coefficients between SQFFQ1 and SQFFQ2 for vegetarians and omnivores were 0.45~0.88 and 0.44~0.84, respectively. For validity, unadjusted Pearson correlation coefficients were 0.46~0.83 with an average of 0.63 and 0.43~0.86 with an average of 0.61, respectively; energy-adjusted Pearson correlation coefficients were 0.43~0.82 with an average of 0.61 and 0.40~0.85 with an average of 0.59, respectively. Majority of the correlation coefficients for food groups and macronutrients decreased or remained unchanged after energy adjustment. Furthermore, all correlations were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Bland−Altman plots also showed reasonably acceptable agreement between the two methods. In conclusion, the SQFFQ developed in this study has reasonably acceptable reproducibility and validity.

Abstract
AIMS This study aims to predict poor glycemic control during Ramadan among non-fasting patients with diabetes using machine learning models. METHODS First, we conducted three consultations, before, during, and after Ramadan to assess demographics, diabetes history, caloric intake, anthropometric and metabolic parameters. Second, machine learning techniques (Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbor, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Extra Trees Classifier and Catboost) were trained using the data to predict poor glycemic control among patients. Then, we conducted several simulations with the best performing machine learning model using variables that were found as main predictors of poor glycemic control. RESULTS The prevalence of poor glycemic control among patients was 52.6%. Extra tree Classifier was the best performing model for glycemic deterioration (accuracy = 0.87, AUC = 0,87). Caloric intake evolution, gender, baseline caloric intake, baseline weight, BMI variation, waist circumference evolution and Total Cholesterol serum level after Ramadan were selected as the most significant for the prediction of poor glycemic control. We determined thresholds for each predicting factor among which this risk is present. CONCLUSIONS The clinical use of our findings may help to improve glycemic control during Ramadan among patients who do not fast by targeting risk factors of poor glycemic control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the consumption of foods and drinks from different food processing categories using the NOVA classification and CRC risk among Moroccan adults. METHODS 1453 cases and 1453 matched controls aged at least 18 years and recruited from the 5 greater Moroccan regions were interviewed by trained investigators about their habitual diet using a standardized food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Foods were categorized according to their degree of processing by the NOVA classification. Intakes of each food processing group were categorized into tertiles based on the distribution of controls with the lowest tertile considered as the reference category. Multivariable conditional logistic regression models were used to assess the association between each group and CRC risk (Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI)), taking relevant confounders into account. RESULTS High consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed foods (NOVA group 1) was significantly inversely (OR = 0.82, 95%CI = 0.72-0.93), while high consumption of ultra-processed foods and drink products (NOVA group 4) was significantly positively (OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.22-1.61) associated with CRC risk as compared to the lowest intake group. These results were similar for colon and rectum sub-sites. CONCLUSION This is the first study to evaluate the association between the NOVA classification groups and CRC risk in an African country. Our results suggest that the consumption of ultra-processed foods and drink products may be associated with an increased risk of developing CRC, but longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity has been associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer in studies mainly conducted in high-income countries, while sedentary behavior has been suggested to increase CRC risk. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of physical activity and sedentary behavior on CRC risk in the Moroccan population. METHODS A case-control study was conducted involving 1516 case-control pairs, matched on age, sex and center in five university hospital centers. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on socio-demographics, lifestyle habits, family history of CRC, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use. Information on physical activity and sedentary behavior were collected by the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). For each activity (work, household, and recreational activities), a metabolic equivalent (MET) was calculated using GPAQ recommendations. Conditional logistic regression models were used to assess the association between physical activity, sedentary behavior and the risk of overall CRC, colon cancer, and rectal cancer taking into account other CRC risk factors. RESULTS High level of physical activity was associated with lower risk of rectal cancer, colon cancer, and overall CRC, the adjusted odds ratios (ORa) for the highest versus the lowest level of activity were 0.67 (95% CI: 0.54-0.82), 0.77 (95% CI: 0.62-0.96), and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.62-0.83), respectively. In contrast, sedentary behavior was positively associated with rectal cancer risk (ORa=1.19, 95% CI: 1.01-1.40), but was unrelated to colon cancer risk (ORa=1.02, 95% CI: 0.87-1.20). CONCLUSION We found an inverse association between physical activity and CRC risk in the Moroccan population, and a positive association between sedentary behavior and rectal cancer risk. Considering that one-third of the total population studied had a sedentary lifestyle, these results may be used to improve strategies of public health suitable for Moroccan population.

Abstract
Objective: Osteoporosis (OP) is the most common bone disease. The genetic and metabolic factors play important roles in OP development. However, the genetic basis of OP is still elusive. The study aimed to explore the relationships between OP and dietary habits. Methods: This study used large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics from the UK Biobank to explore potential associations between OP and 143 dietary habits. The GWAS summary data of OP included 9434 self-reported OP cases and 444,941 controls, and the GWAS summary data of the dietary habits included 455,146 participants of European ancestry. Linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) was used to detect the genetic correlations between OP and each of the 143 dietary habits, followed by Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to further assess the causal relationship between OP and candidate dietary habits identified by LDSC. Results: The LDSC analysis identified seven candidate dietary habits that showed genetic associations with OP including cereal type such as biscuit cereal (coefficient = −0.1693, p value = 0.0183), servings of raw vegetables per day (coefficient = 0.0837, p value = 0.0379), and spirits measured per month (coefficient = 0.115, p value = 0.0353). MR analysis found that OP and PC17 (butter) (odds ratio [OR] = 0.974, 95% confidence interval [CI] = (0.973, 0.976), p value = 0.000970), PC35 (decaffeinated coffee) (OR = 0.985, 95% CI = (0.983, 0.987), p value = 0.00126), PC36 (overall processed meat intake) (OR = 1.035, 95% CI = (1.033, 1.037), p value = 0.000976), PC39 (spirits measured per month) (OR = 1.014, 95% CI = (1.011, 1.015), p value = 0.00153), and servings of raw vegetables per day (OR = 0.978, 95% CI = (0.977, 0.979), p value = 0.000563) were clearly causal. Conclusions: Our findings provide new clues for understanding the genetic mechanisms of OP, which focus on the possible role of dietary habits in OP pathogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Osteoarthritis (OA) started to be associated to shifted microbiota composition recently. This systematic review aims to elucidate if there is a common microbiota composition linked with OA between different studies. METHODS We screened PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane databases up to July 26th 2021 to identify original studies in which microbiome was assessed from OA individuals, both in human and laboratory animals' studies. Bacteria associated with OA were summarized to find common patterns between the studies. RESULTS We identified 37 original studies where the microbiota composition was assessed in OA subjects. We identified some bacteria (Clostridium, Streptococcus, Bacteroides and Firmicutes) that were reported to be upregulated in OA subjects, whereas Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium longum were associated with improved OA outcomes. The heterogeneity of sampling and analysis methods, different taxonomical levels reported and the lack of healthy controls in several studies made it difficult to compare the studies and reach conclusions about a potential causal link. CONCLUSIONS The current study demonstrated that some bacteria were identified as regulators of OA. Future works following standardized methodologies with more proper controls are needed to elucidate our understanding of the role of the microbiota in OA pathogenesis and progress towards new treatments.

Abstract
Background Dietary pattern analysis is a robust statistical procedure that efficiently characterize the dietary intakes of individuals. However, there is a lack of robust dietary intake evidence beyond nutrient intake in Ethiopia. This study was to answer, what are the major dietary consumption patterns and its predictors among pregnant women in Ethiopia. Methods A facility-based survey among 380 randomly selected pregnant women using a contextualized food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) over 1 month recall was used. The frequency of food consumption was standardized to daily frequency equivalents, and a sequential exploratory factor analysis was used to derive major dietary patterns. A multivariable ordinary logistic regression model was fitted with all its assumptions. Results Three major dietary patterns (“fruits and animal-source foods,” “cereals, tubers, and sweet foods,” “legumes and vegetables”), explaining 65% of the total variation were identified. Women snacks (AOR = 1.93; 1.23–2.75), without food aversion (AOR = 1.59; 1.08–2.35), non-fasting (AOR = 0.75; 1.12–2.12), and receiving nutritional counseling (AOR = 1.96; 1.25–3.07) were significantly positively associated with a higher tercile of fruits and animal-source food consumption. Non-working mothers (AOR = 1.8;1.23–2.76), chronic disease (AOR = 1.88; 1.14–3.09), or received nutritional counseling (AOR = 1.33; 0.88–2.01), were fasting (AOR = 1.33;0.88–2.01), and no food cravings (AOR = 4.27;2.67–6.84), and aversion (AOR = 1.60;1.04–2.44) had significantly higher odds of consuming cereals, tubers, and sweet foods. Literacy (AOR = 1.87; 1.14–3.09), urban residence (AOR = 2.10; 1.10–3.93), low socioeconomic class (AOR = 2.68; 1.30–5.23), and skipping meals (AOR = 1.73; 1.15–2.62) were associated with higher odds of legume and vegetable consumption. Conclusion Socioeconomic class, literacy, occupation, getting nutritional counseling, habits of food craving, food aversion, and fasting can predict a woman’s dietary pattern.

Abstract
BackgroundAccurately assessing dietary intake is crucial for understanding how diet affects a person’s health. In large cohorts, paper-based dietary assessment tools (DAT) such as food recalls or food frequency questionnaires have emerged as valid tools with a low burden for participants.ObjectiveTo validate a visually aided DAT for use in studies with Swiss adults against the gold standard of a weighed 7-day food record (7 d-FR).DesignFifty-one adults (n = 24 women, n = 27 males) participated in the study and were recruited within two age groups (20–40 and 50–70 y). Each participant filled out the visually aided DAT, then the 7 d-FR. The DAT was compared to the 7 d-FR for total energy intake, macronutrients, sugar, water, and portions of fruits and vegetables. Pearson correlation and Bland–Altman analyses were used for statistical analyses.ResultsTotal correlations ranged from 0.288 (sugar, p < 0.05) to 0.729 (water, p < 0.01). The older age group showed higher correlations for total energy intake, protein, fats, carbohydrates, and sugar, but not for water (p < 0.05). Correlations were moderate at r > 0.5, whereas only water and protein reached those values in the young group. Both groups overestimated total calories in kcal (+14.0%), grams of protein (+ 44.6%), fats (+36.3%), and portions of fruits and vegetables (+16.0%) but strongly underestimated sugar intake (−50.9%).ConclusionThis DAT showed that all macronutrients and total energy intake were estimated more accurately by the older age group and therefore might be adequate to capture dietary habits in older Swiss adults.

Abstract
The changing structure of food consumption requires updating the nutrition assessment tool, taking into account modern dietary patterns.Aim. To develop, evaluate the validity and reproducibility of semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for the adult population.Material and methods. The FFQ questionnaire was developed as part of the Russian part of the international Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study. To compare the quantitative parameters of the energy and nutritional value of diet, the validation used data on the actual nutrition of 294 men and women aged 25-65 years, collected by 2 methods: 24-hour dietary recall (24hDR) — 4 surveys per year (1 time per season) and the developed FFQ — 2 surveys: initially (FFQ1) and after 12 months (FFQ2).Results. The minimum mean values for the vast majority of nutrients were recorded by the 24hDR method, while higher values — by FFQ2, and maximum values — by FFQ1. Pearson’s correlation coefficients ranged from 0,19 (retinol equivalent) to 0,53 (cholesterol), showing a moderate relationship between the two methods. After crossclassification, the proportion of subjects assigned to the same quartile of 24hDR and FFQ2 nutrient profile ranged from 26,9% (β-carotene) to 43,5% (cholesterol), and those assigned to opposite quartiles ranged from 3,1% (cholesterol) to 11,2% (retinol equivalent), indicating good agreement between these methods. The Bland-Altman plots showed slightly overestimated FFQ2 scores for total carbohydrate, protein, and dietary calories. The Pearson correlation between FFQ1 and FFQ2 values ranged from 0,46 to 0,82. The intraclass correlation showed the questionnaire reproducibility coefficients lower than the Pearson correlation. However, most of them remained at a value of >0,60.Conclusion. The results showed predominantly moderate validity and good reproducibility of the modern FFQ version, which allows it to be used to assess nutrition in the adult population with estimation of the energy and nutritional value of diet in the protocols of Russian epidemiological, preventive and clinical studies.

Abstract
Background and objective A culture-specific web-based food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intake in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) adult population was developed using data from the 2009–2010 national nutrition survey. The objective of this study was to assess the relative validity of the newly developed FFQ for use in the adult Emirati population (AE-FFQ), which contained a list of 139 food lines. Methods A convenient sample of 60 (36 females and 24 males) adult Emiratis completed 3 non-consecutive 24HRs over a period of one month, followed by the AE-FFQ, which assessed the intake over the previous month. Relative validity was evaluated by comparing nutrient and food group intakes from the AE-FFQ with the average three 24HRs using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, Spearman’s correlation coefficients (CC), Bland-Altman analysis, and cross-classification. Results The AE-FFQ overestimated energy and most nutrients and food groups. Bland–Altman analysis showed significant proportional bias between the 2 methods. Deattenuated energy-adjusted Spearman correlation coefficients were poor to good ranging from 0.06 (iron) to 0.62 (fiber) for nutrients, 0.39 median value, and from –0.01 (cruciferous vegetables) to 0.64 (eggs) for food groups, 0.41 median value. A fairly acceptable agreement was obtained, with correct classification into the same or adjacent quartile ranging from 34% (vitamin B12) to 78% (pyridoxine), median 69% for nutrients and from 55% (diet soft drinks) to 87% (soft drinks), median 67% for food groups. Conclusions The AE-FFQ is an acceptable tool for ranking UAE adults (aged 18 to 50) according to their dietary intake to investigate the role of Emirati dietary patterns on health and disease. Caution is needed for assessing absolute intake, however, given the bias observed in assessing group-level agreement.

Abstract
Epidemiologic data support an association between diet and mutations in the Kirsten-ras (KRAS) gene involved in colorectal cancer (CRC) development. This study aimed to explore the associations between fat intake and KRAS mutations in codons 12 and 13 in cases of CRC in the Moroccan population. A multicenter case-series study nested in a large-scale Moroccan CRC case-control study was conducted. Among all CRC cases recruited, 151 specimens were available for the DNA mutation analysis. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (Cis) for KRAS mutation status according to the fat intake variables. A KRAS mutation was detected in the CRC tumor of 34.4% of the patients among whom 65.4% had a single mutation at codon 12 and 34.6% had a single mutation at codon 13. Compared to low levels of consumption, a positive association was observed between high polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) consumption (>16.9 g/day) and prevalence of KRAS mutations (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.01-4.59). No statistically significant associations were observed for total fat, monounsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids and KRAS mutations. The results of this study suggest that PUFA may be relevant in the etiology of CRC, possibly through the generation of G > A transitions at the KRAS oncogene. Further studies are needed to verify and explain this finding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The management of diabetes during Ramadan is well codified. International guidelines recommend avoiding fasting for patients with the risk of complications. However, during Ramadan drastic changes occur in lifestyles habits. Our study aims to evaluate the impact of the month of Ramadan on the lifestyle habits and metabolic profile of non-fasting patients with diabetes. PATIENTS AND METHODS This observational cross-sectional study was carried out during 3 months of Ramadan in 2018, Ramadan 2019, and Ramadan 2021. We conducted 3 consultations (before, during, and after Ramadan). Before Ramadan, we collected anthropometric and metabolic parameters, and we assessed physical activity level and dietary intake. During Ramadan, we evaluated the occurrence of complications such as hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, as well as we assessed physical activity level, dietary intake, and the number of meals. After Ramadan re-evaluate anthropometric and metabolic parameters. RESULTS We included 155 patients, 93.5% had type 2 diabetes and 6.5% had type 1 diabetes. We found that glycated hemoglobin, LDL cholesterol, and Triglyceride increased significantly after Ramadan (p-value <0.001). We also found that weight, body mass index, waist circumference. Caloric intake increased significantly during Ramadan (p-value <0.001); this increase concerned 61.3% of patients. In terms of metabolic parameters, diabetes was unbalanced in 52.6% of patients, hypoglycemia occurs in 20.9% of patients, and hyperglycemia was experienced by 37% of patients during Ramadan. We found that LDL cholesterol increased in 48.4% of patients, triglycerides increased in 60.6% of patients and serum level of total cholesterol increased in 55% of patients. CONCLUSION Our study showed that during Ramadan risk of complications in patients with diabetes is not only related to fasting.

Abstract
In light of the globally increasing prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases, new scalable and non-invasive dietary monitoring techniques are urgently needed. Automatically collected digital receipts from loyalty cards hereby promise to serve as an objective and automatically traceable digital marker for individual food choice behavior and do not require users to manually log individual meal items. With the introduction of the General Data Privacy Regulation in the European Union, millions of consumers gained the right to access their shopping data in a machine-readable form, representing a historic chance to leverage shopping data for scalable monitoring of food choices. Multiple quantitative indicators for evaluating the nutritional quality of food shopping have been suggested, but so far, no comparison has validated the potential of these alternative indicators within a comparative setting. This manuscript thus represents the first study to compare the calibration capacity and to validate the discrimination potential of previously suggested food shopping quality indicators for the nutritional quality of shopped groceries, including the Food Standards Agency Nutrient Profiling System Dietary Index (FSA-NPS DI), Grocery Purchase Quality Index-2016 (GPQI), Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015), Healthy Trolley Index (HETI) and Healthy Purchase Index (HPI), checking if any of them performs differently from the others. The hypothesis is that some food shopping quality indicators outperform the others in calibrating and discriminating individual actual dietary intake. To assess the indicators' potentials, 89 eligible participants completed a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and donated their digital receipts from the loyalty card programs of the two leading Swiss grocery retailers, which represent 70% of the national grocery market. Compared to absolute food and nutrient intake, correlations between density-based relative food and nutrient intake and food shopping data are stronger. The FSA-NPS DI has the best calibration and discrimination performance in classifying participants' consumption of nutrients and food groups, and seems to be a superior indicator to estimate nutritional quality of a user's diet based on digital receipts from grocery shopping in Switzerland.

Abstract
We developed a culturally-specific Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to the Ethiopian context and evaluate its validity in comparison to two 24-h dietary recalls (24-HRs) of food and nutrient intake. To evaluate the validity of a culturally-specific FFQ against two 24-HRs, we used a paired t-test, Wilcoxon-signed-rank test, Correlation coefficients, cross-classification, κ and Bland-Altman analysis. The FFQ was obtained 15 d after the second 24-HR was completed. A total of 105 adults, of which 43 (41 %) were men and 62 (59 %) women, aged 20–65 years participated in this present study. Mean energy and macronutrient intake obtained from the FFQ were significantly higher than those obtained from the mean of two 24-HRs. For energy and nutrient intakes, the crude correlation ranged from 0⋅05 (total fat) to 0⋅49 (vitamin B1). The de-attenuated correlation ranged from to 0⋅10 (total fat) to 0⋅80 (vitamin A). For the majority of food groups, no significant difference was observed in the median intake of food and nutrients. Crude correlation for food groups ranged from 0⋅12 (egg) to 0⋅78 (legumes). The de-attenuated correlation ranged from 0⋅24 (egg) to 1⋅00 (meat/poultry/fish and dairy). The FFQ is valid to assess and rank individuals in terms of intake of most food groups according to high and low intake categories.

Abstract
As the most widely used tool for assessing dietary intake, the validity of food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) should be evaluated before application. A comprehensive search of the PubMed and Web of Science databases was conducted for publications from January 2000 to April 1, 2020. Pooled estimates were calculated for correlation coefficients and mean differences for energy and 61 nutrients between FFQs and standard methods. The literature search identified 130 articles that included 21,494 participants. Subgroup analyses according to the number of administrations of the reference method, sample size, administration methods, FFQ items, reference periods, quality of the studies, gender, and regions were also performed. We conducted a meta-analysis by summarizing the available evidence to comprehensively assess the validity of FFQs stratified by the reference method type (24-hour recall (24HRs) and food records (FRs). We also performed subgroup analyses to examine the impact on the final summary estimates. After a meta-analysis of the FFQs' validity correlation coefficients of the included studies, this study showed that the range (median) of the validity coefficients of the 24HRs as reference methods was 0.220-0.770 (0.416), and for the FRs, it was 0.173-0.735 (0.373), which indicated that FFQs were suitable to assess the overall dietary intake in nutritional epidemiological studies. The results of the subgroup analysis showed that the number of administrations of the reference method, administration mode, number of items, reference periods, sample size, and gender mainly affected the validity correlation of FFQs.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/10408398.2021.1966737 .

Abstract
Objective: The Moroccan cross-sectional study aimed to investigate obesity in
association to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Fez city. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in Moroccan adults. Anthropometric
and spirometry measurements were performed using standardized
guidelines. Results: Among the 744 participants, 53.9% of were women, with a mean age of 55.27
years (SD = 10.29). Nearly all women declared themselves to be never
smokers, while 21% of men were current smokers. Overall, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease prevalence decreased with body mass index
(p = 0.01) and waist circumference (p
< 0.001). The same trends were also observed in women. The adjusted
regression analysis showed a significant independent association between
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and decreasing overweight
(ORa: 0.66; CI95% (0.40–0.98)), obesity
(ORa: 0.66 CI95%: (0.36–0.89)), and a decreasing
waist circumference-abdominal obesity (ORa: 0.58
CI95%: (0.34–0.99)) in the whole population. The same association
remains significant in women for overweight (ORa: 0.18
CI95%: (0.06–0.54)) and for waist circumference-abdominal
obesity (ORa: 0.40 CI95%: (0.19–0.85)). All these
associations disappeared for men. Conclusion: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease decreases with the increase in body
mass index and waist circumference. The effect of waist circumference on the
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was greater among women, regardless of
the tobacco factor. A multicenter study would help to confirm the accuracy
of these findings in a larger sample of the Moroccan population. Developed
lifestyle programs in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
should be considered.

Abstract
Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQ) can be used to document food consumption and to estimate the intake of contaminants for Indigenous populations. The objective of this project was to refine and implement an FFQ to estimate the consumption of traditional locally harvested foods for Dene/Métis in the Northwest Territories, Canada. The strategy consisted of: 1) refining the FFQ through three focus groups and, 2) implementing the FFQ in Indigenous communities. Participants were asked to complete the FFQ using an iPad to document the types of traditional foods consumed over the past 12 months, as well as the consumption frequency, the portion size, and the preparation methods. Focus groups supported the refinement of the FFQ on the format, the list of foods, and the preparation methods listed in the questionnaire. The refined FFQ was then implemented with participants (n = 237). Findings indicated that the traditional foods most frequently consumed were moose, whitefish and lake trout. Participants who consumed fish and land animals reported, on average, a portion size for one serving of between 126 and 143 g, depending on age and sex. These findings increase knowledge of the current traditional food consumption of Dene/Métis communities and will support the assessment of contaminant exposure.

Abstract
This study aimed at developing a valid culture-sensitive quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Qatari adults. A convenient sample of healthy Qataris (n = 107) were recruited from family members of Qatar University students. The Diet History Questionnaire II of the US National Cancer Institute was translated to Arabic language, back-translated to English, pilot tested, and then modified accordingly to be used in Qatari setting. Participants were asked to complete the translated version of the FFQ. This FFQ was then validated against three 24 h diet recall (24 hDR) including a weekend day. Participants were asked to complete the FFQ again after one-month period to measure its repeatability. Dietary data were analyzed using the dietary analysis software ESHA. The validity and reliability of FFQ were assessed by comparing the median intake of nutrients and foods and by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficients. The median nutrient intakes assessed by the second FFQ were higher than that reported in the baseline FFQ1 except for fat. The percentage of increase varies between 1.5% and 96%. Results of the second FFQ indicated an overestimation of intake for most nutrients (macro and micro). Macronutrient intakes assessed by the two FFQ and 24 hDR were strongly correlated. The correlation coefficients for micronutrient intakes between FFQ2 and 24hDR were lower than that of the two FFQs except for calcium (r = 0.55) and sodium (r = 0.643). They ranged from (-0.17) for fluorine to (0.643) for sodium. The agreement rates for classifying macronutrient intakes into same or adjacent quartile were between 79.4% and 100% for the two FFQs and between 71% and 100% for the second FFQ and 24hDR. The reported consumption of food groups estimated by FFQ2 was significantly higher than that reported by FFQ1. In conclusion, the developed FFQ was sufficiently valid to assess energy and macronutrients but not micronutrients. The reliability was adequate for most nutrients.

Unadjusted and energy-adjusted correlations, Bland-Altman plots and weighed kappa statistics were used to assess the agreement between the two methods. SETTING Lebanon. PARTICIPANTS 119 adults (staff and students) at a Lebanese University. RESULTS Good unadjusted and energy-adjusted correlation coefficients were found between data from the two methods which ranged from -0·002 (vitamin A) to 0·337 (carbohydrates) and were all statistically significant except for vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin A, Se and niacin. Slight/fair agreement was reported through weighed kappa estimates for unadjusted data ranging from -0·05 (vitamin C) to 0·248 (Mg) and for energy-adjusted data ranging from -0·034 (vitamin A) to 0·203 (P). Individuals were categorised into exact and adjacent quartiles with an average of 78 % for unadjusted data and 70 % for energy-adjusted data, indicating a very good agreement between the EPIC FFQ and the average of the 24-HR data. The visual inspection of the Bland-Altman plots revealed an overestimation of energy, carbohydrates, protein and fat intakes by the FFQ method. CONCLUSION Overall, when all tests were taken into consideration, the current study demonstrated an acceptable agreement of the EPIC FFQ with the 24-h dietary recall method and significantly good correlations between dietary intakes. Therefore, the EPIC FFQ can be considered a valid tool for assessing diet in epidemiological studies among Lebanese adults.

Abstract
The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is experiencing a nutrition transition, characterized by the emergence of overnutrition and micro-nutrient deficiencies. No previous study has comparatively examined nutrient intake in adults across countries in the EMR. This review examined the adequacy of nutrients in adults living in the EMR. Moreover, it analyzed the food balance sheets (FBS) for 1961–2018 to identify the trajectory of energy supply from macro-nutrients in the EMR. A systematic search was conducted from January 2012 to September 2020. Only observational studies were retained with a random sampling design. An assessment of the methodological quality was conducted. Levels of nutrient daily intake and their adequacy compared to the daily reference intake of the Institute of Medicine were reported across the region. No studies were identified for half of the region’s countries. Although nutrient energy intake was satisfactory overall, fat and carbohydrate intake were high. Intake of vitamin D, calcium, potassium, zinc, and magnesium were below that recommended. The analysis of the FBS data allowed for the identification of four linear patterns of trajectories, with countries in the EMR best fitting the ‘high-energy-supply from carbohydrate’ group. This systematic review warrants multi-sectorial commitment to optimize nutrient intake.

Abstract
AIM To validate a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) and assess the dietary intake of Iranian adults. METHODS This study was conducted among 113 healthy adults in Iran. We administered twelve 24-hour dietary recalls (24DRs) during a year as a reference method. The 165-item SFFQ was administered twice, along with the first and last 24DRs. To examine validity and reproducibility of SFFQ, the correlation coefficients (r) and de-attenuated correlation coefficients and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) between 24DRs and SFFQ were calculated. The Bland-Altman method was used to assess agreement between the two methods. RESULTS De-attenuated correlations varied from 0.42 (polyunsaturated fatty acids) to 0.62 (energy) (all P < .001) for nutrients and from 0.48 (oils and fats) to 0.65 (sweets) for food groups (all P < .05). We found reasonable reproducibility of SFFQ for both nutrients and food groups. ICC (95%CI) varied from 0.47 (0.15-0.74) for saturated fatty acids to 0.64 (0.47-0.76) for energy and from 0.43 (0.15-0.62) for oils and fats to 0.58 for grains (0.31-0.69). According to the Bland-Altman plots, we observed an acceptable level of agreement between the two methods. CONCLUSIONS We found reasonable relative validity and acceptable reproducibility of SFFQ. This SFFQ can be used to classify individuals based on their dietary intake in our population.

Abstract
Background The dietary nutritional status of the lactating mothers is related to maternal health and has a significant impact on the growth and development of infants through the secretion of breast milk. The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is the most cost-effective dietary assessment method that can help obtain information on the usual dietary pattern of participants. Until now, the FFQs have been used for different populations in China, but there are few FFQs available for the lactating mothers. We aimed to develop a semi-quantitative, 156-item FFQ for the Chinese lactating mothers, and evaluate its reproducibility and relative validity. Methods A total of 112 lactating mothers completed two FFQs and one 3-d dietary record (3DR). The first FFQ (FFQ1) was conducted during postpartum at 60–65 days and the second FFQ (FFQ2) during subsequent follow-up at 5 weeks. The 3DR was completed with portion sizes assessed using photographs taken by the respondent before and after eating (instant photography) 1 week after FFQ1. Results For reproducibility, the Spearman’s correlation coefficients for food ranged from 0.34 to 0.68, and for nutrients from 0.25 to 0.61. Meanwhile, the intra-class correlation coefficients for food ranged from 0.48 to 0.87, and for nutrients from 0.27 to 0.70. For relative validity, the Spearman’s correlation coefficients for food ranged from 0.32 to 0.56, and for nutrients from 0.23 to 0.72. The energy-adjusted coefficients for food ranged from 0.26 to 0.55, and for nutrients from 0.22 to 0.47. Moreover, the de-attenuation coefficients for food ranged from 0.34 to 0.67, and for nutrients from 0.28 to 0.77. The Bland-Altman plots also showed reasonably acceptable agreement between the two methods. Conclusions This FFQ is a reasonably reproducible and a relative valid tool for assessing dietary intake of the Chinese lactating mothers.

Abstract
PURPOSE Little is known about the combined effect of different lifestyle factors on CRC incidence among populations living in developing countries. In this study, we sought to create an Extended Healthy Lifestyle Index (EHLI) and to investigate its association with CRC risk in the Moroccan population. METHODS A large case-control study including 1516 cases and 1516 controls, matched on age, sex and center were recruited in 5 Moroccan university hospital centers between 2009 and 2017. EHLI scores, including 9 modifiable factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity intensity, BMI, fruit and vegetables consumption, drinks that promote weight gain, red and processed meat, relatively unprocessed cereals and/or pulses, and dairy products consumption) were assigned to lifestyle information derived from the participants. We assessed the score based on the answers on each of the nine lifestyle components as unhealthy/un-compliant (0 point), healthy/compliant (1 point) and 0.5 for partial compliance to the recommendation. Conditional logistic regression models were used to assess the association between the EHLI and CRC risk and to estimate multivariate ORs and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). All potential confounder variables were considered. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, a significant decrease in the risk of overall CRC was observed when comparing the highest EHLI category with the lowest index category (0.39, 95% CI: 0.33-0.47). These results did not differ by colon or rectum subsite. CONCLUSION Combined healthy lifestyle factors are associated with a significantly lower incidence of CRC in Moroccan populations. Prevention strategies should consider targeting of multiple lifestyle factors.

Validation and reproducibility of a FFQ focused on pregnant women living in Northeastern Brazil. Public Health Nutr 2021; 24:5769-5776. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the current study is to assess the validity and reproducibility of a FFQ focused on pregnant women living in Northeastern Brazil. DESIGN Three 24-hour-dietary recalls (24 hR) and two FFQ were applied at 15-d intervals between research stages in order to confirm the validity and reproducibility of the FFQ. Validity assessment was based on Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) or Spearman's correlation coefficient (SCC) between FFQ and the mean of three 24 hR (the 24 hR was used as reference standard), whereas reproducibility assessment was based on the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) among FFQ, and P < 0·05 was set as significance level. SETTING Public health network of a capital city in Northeastern Brazil. PARTICIPANTS Overall, 100 pregnant women were included in the study. RESULTS The PCC or SCC adopted in the validity analysis recorded the recommended values (from 0·4 and 0·7) for energy (0·44; P < 0·001), carbohydrate (0·40; P < 0·001), vitamins B2 (0·40; P < 0·001), B5 (0·40; P < 0·001), E (0·47; P < 0·001), B12 (0·48; P < 0·001), phosphorus (0·92; P < 0·001), Mg (0·81; P < 0·001), Se (0·70; P < 0·001), cholesterol (0·64; P < 0·001), saturated (0·76; P < 0·001), polyunsaturated (0·73; P < 0·001) and monounsaturated fats (0·87; P < 0·001) and fibres (0·77; P < 0·001). Mg (0·72; P < 0·001), Fe (0·65; P < 0·001), lipid (0·56; P < 0·001) and energy (0·55; P < 0·001) presented ICC within the recommended reproducibility values. CONCLUSIONS The FFQ developed in the current study is a useful tool to assess the usual food intake of pregnant women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reproducibility of FFQs measures the consistency of the same subject at different time points. We performed a meta-analysis to explore the reproducibility of FFQs and factors related to reproducibility of FFQs. METHODS AND FINDINGS A systematic literature review was performed before July 2020 using PubMed and Web of Science databases. Pooled intraclass and Spearman correlation coefficients (95% confidence interval) were calculated to assess the reproducibility of FFQs. Subgroup analyses based on characteristics of study populations, FFQs, or study design were performed to investigate factors related to the reproducibility of FFQs. A total of 123 studies comprising 20,542 participants were eligible for the meta-analysis. The pooled crude intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.499 to 0.803 and 0.499 to 0.723 for macronutrients and micronutrients, respectively. Energy-adjusted intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.420 to 0.803 and 0.507 to 0.712 for macronutrients and micronutrients, respectively. The pooled crude and energy-adjusted Spearman correlation coefficients ranged from 0.548 to 0.851 and 0.441 to 0.793, respectively, for macronutrients; and from 0.573 to 0.828 and 0.510 to 0.744, respectively, for micronutrients. FFQs with more food items, 12 months as dietary recall interval (compared to less than 12 months), and a shorter time period between repeated FFQs resulted in superior FFQ reproducibility. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, FFQs with correlation coefficients greater than 0.5 for most nutrients may be considered a reliable tool to measure dietary intake. To develop FFQs with higher reproducibility, the number of food items and dietary recall interval should be taken into consideration.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective This study evaluated reproducibility, relative validity, using a 24-hour recall questionnaire as a reference standard, and estimated calibration factors for a food frequency questionnaire adapted for use with German descendants living in Brazil. Methods The target population consisted of 50 volunteers, of both genders, aged over 20 years, living in a German colonization city in southern Brazil. The food frequency questionnaire was applied twice, in the first and third months of the investigation. During this period, three 24-hour recalls were applied, with an interval of one month between them. Reproducibility was estimated by the intraclass correlation coefficient. Validity was tested by the intraclass correlation coefficient, weighted kappa test and Bland-Altman method. Calibration factors were estimated using linear regression. Results Among the food frequency questionnaires, there was a strong correlation for energy and most of the nutrients corrected for energy. There was a weak correlation between a food frequency questionnaire and a 24-hour dietary recall. However, the exact concordance in the categorization in tertiles among the instruments ranged from 28% (vitamin A) to 52% (fiber and potassium). Gross values of the food frequency questionnaire were reduced with the calibration and approached the consumption data estimated by the 24-hour dietary recall. Conclusions The food frequency questionnaire showed good reproducibility, however, weak correlation with the 24-hour dietary recall. The calibration of the data obtained by the food frequency questionnaire brought them closer to the reference method.

Abstract
The relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) scores and the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) is unclear; therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current published literature was conducted. Relevant studies published online (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) until February 1, 2021 were identified for review. The initial search yielded 13 reports, and after perusing their titles, abstracts, and full texts, 5 studies were deemed appropriate for inclusion in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Individuals with higher DII scores (representing a more proinflammatory diet) had a higher risk of DM (pooled odds ratio 1.32, 95% confidence interval 1.01-1.72, I2 58.6%, p < 0.05). Although the current meta-analysis indicated a trend toward a positive association between DII and DM, further evidence-especially from larger prospective studies in different countries-is needed to clarify this association.

Abstract
Background In China, many people are regarded suitable for participating in regular physical examination for diagnosis and prevention of diseases. Some simplified food frequency questionnaires have been designed and used; however, the accuracy of the questionnaire is absent. This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of simplified food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) used among adults undergoing physical examination in southwest region of China. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted among physical health examination adults in the Southwest region of China. A total of 239 participants aged 20–65 were included from February 2019 to June 2019. The performance of SFFQ was evaluated by means of a three-day 24-h dietary record (3R24). The relative validity and agreement was assessed by Pearson’s correlation and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), respectively. Results The median energy-adjusted ICC of food groups between SFFQ2 and SFFQ1 was 0.59 (range: 0.49–0.73) and the ICC of nutrients was 0.47(range: 0.39–0.76). The Pearson correlation showed a valid comparisons between SFFQ1 and 3R24, ranging from -0.086 to 0.93 for food and 0.21 to 0.71 for nutrition, respectively. The energy-adjustment slightly increased the correlation coefficients. Conclusions The reliability and validity of SFFQ was acceptable, and it could be an appropriate dietary assessment tool for the future epidemiological studies conducted among physical health examination adults of southwest China. Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with lipid metabolism disorder, particularly elevated plasma levels of non-esterified free fatty acids (NEFFA) and an increased cardiovascular disease risk, such as essential hypertension (H). The plasma unbalance of saturated fatty acid (SFA)/polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) ratio is a likely contributor, but the mechanisms involved are not clearly elucidated. The aim of this study is to explore the association between plasma SFA/PUFA ratio and the clusters of cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS), including the atherogenic biomarkers, inflammatory status, feeding patterns, and physical activity in people with T2DM with or without essential hypertension. The study was conducted on 784 adult male and female participants, aged between 30 and 50 years, and divided into 3 groups: 100 T2DM without hypertension (D); 368 T2DM with hypertension (DM); and 316 hypertensive participants without T2DM (H). All Participants were phenotyped regarding CMS clusters according to the NCEP/ATPIII criteria. Insulin resistance was assessed by Homeostasis model assessment (HOMA model). Metabolic, atherogenic, and inflammatory parameters were analyzed by biochemical methods; NEFFA by microfluorimetry; SFA, PUFA-n6 and PUFA-n3 by gas phase chromatography. Dietary lipids and physical activity were analyzed through the use of validated questionnaires. The clusters of CMS were found in all groups. Dyslipidemia was correlated with accretion NEFFA levels in all groups, but more accentuated in the DH group (r = +0.77; p < 0.001). Similarly, plasma PUFA/SFA ratio and PUFA-3 level was lower, concomitantly with a higher plasma ApoB100/ApoA1 (p < 0.001), lipoprotein (a), homocysteine (p < 0.001), and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-6, IL1-β) in the DH group. Likewise, the depletion of PUFA-n3/PUFA-n6 ratio is associated with the decrease of omega 3-DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and omega 3-EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) (p < 0.001). It appears that the PUFAs-n3 ratio modulates cardiometabolic risk, inflammatory state and atherogenic biomarkers. The plasma unbalanced ratio of SFA/PUFA reflects dietary fatty acids intake. The contribution of dietary lipids is undisputed. Nutritional recommendations are required to determine the fatty acids ratio (saturated and unsaturated) provided in the diet.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the type of maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy and the distribution characteristics of children's birth weight and the association between dietary patterns and neonatal birth weight in China. METHODS Data were derived from a cross-sectional program named "The prevalence and risk factors of birth defects in Shaanxi Province" in July to November in 2013. A stratified multistage random sampling method was used to select women and their children. The mother's diet during pregnancy was investigated using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to collect the frequency and amount of food consumption, and the newborn birth weight as well as related social demographic information was collected at the same time. In our study, 0-1 year old children and their mothers with complete dietary survey data were selected as research objects. The main dietary patterns were identified according to factor analysis, and latent class analysis (LCA) was used to investigate the social demographic factors affecting dietary patterns. The logistic regression model was used to assess the association between birth weight and maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy by establishing three adjusting models and the data were stratified for further analysis by urban-rural and regions. RESULTS A total of 15,980 participants were involved in this study. Four dietary patterns were identified: "vegetarian pattern", "balance pattern", "traditional pattern" and "processing pattern". Compared with moderate tertile, women in the highest tertile of adherence to vegetarian pattern increased the risk of low birth weight in offspring in rural areas (OR = 1.61, 95%CI:1.06-2.93) and middle region (OR = 1.75, 95%CI:1.18-2.62), and the traditional pattern had greater odds of lower birth weight in the middle region (OR = 1.55, 95%CI:1.05-3.75). The processing pattern was found a protective factor for the occurrence of low birth weight in rural areas (OR = 0.98, 95%CI:0.43-0.99) but was a risk factor for low birth weight in the southern region (OR = 8.83, 95%CI:1.22-15.16). The balance pattern was a protective factor for the occurrence of low birth weight in the northern region(OR = 0.35, 95%CI:0.14-0.83). CONCLUSION The vegetarian and traditional pattern may be positively related to a higher risk of low birth weight while the balanced pattern may keep birth weight of offspring within the appropriate range. Health education of balanced diet and individual nutrition guidance during pregnancy should be strengthened, to make the dietary structure during pregnancy are more reasonable, reduce the occurrence of adverse birth weight of newborns.

Abstract
AbstractObjectives:The current study aimed to develop a modified Mediterranean diet (MMD) score adjusted to the southern Mediterranean countries’ cultural specificities and to evaluate associations between adherence to this modified score and overweight/obesity risk in Moroccan adults.Design:Population-based cross-sectional study.Setting:Rural and urban areas of the five greatest provinces of Morocco.Participants:In total, 1516 participants were recruited between September 2009 and February 2017. Dietary assessment was obtained using a validated Moroccan FFQ. We constructed a MMD score focusing on twelve components. The MMD score ranged from 0 (no adherence to the traditional southern Mediterranean diet (MD)) to 12 (maximal adherence) and was categorised as low (scores 0–4), moderate (scores 5–7) and high (scores 8–12).Results:Among the whole population, 754 (50·5 %) were women and 738 (49·5 %) were men, and the mean age was about 55·60 ± 13·70. In total, 58 % of participants were moderately active. Regarding educational level, 50·7 % were illiterate. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 43·3 and 8·6 %, respectively. In multivariate analyses, close adherence to MMD (scores 8–12) was associated with reduced overweight/obesity risk (OR 0·61, 95 % CI 0·44, 0·84).Conclusion:The prevalence of overweight and obesity was very high among Moroccan adults. Adherence to the traditional southern MD may help prevent overweight and obesity.
