Abstract
Objective This study investigates the prevalence of lipid abnormalities among adolescents diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and explores potential associations with microalbuminuria and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors.Research Design and Methods: A retrospective study analyzed lipid profiles, microalbuminuria, and CVD risk in adolescents with T1DM. Six hundred individuals were assessed for lipid levels, BMI, and microalbuminuria. Results Dyslipidemia prevalence was 59.7 %, with 22.7 % exhibiting abnormal total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG), and 15.8 % with elevated TC alone. A2 microalbuminuria was found in 59.2 %, with 14.6 % showing A3. Females had higher A2 prevalence and mild eGFR decrease (P = 0.02). Lipid levels correlated significantly with microalbuminuria (TC: r = 0.761; TG: r = 0.572, P = 0.03 and 0.04, respectively). The prevalence of high total cholesterol (TC) + high triglycerides (TG), as well as the high TG alone, was considerably higher in patients belonging to the A2 Microalbuminuria group. AIP, HbA1c, and UACR showed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.542, P = 0.04; r = 0.621, P = 0.02). Conclusion Our study highlights the prevalence of elevated or borderline lipid levels among adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), indicating a heightened risk of dyslipidemia in this population. Particularly concerning is the significantly increased incidence of dyslipidemia among young individuals with T1DM, with females exhibiting a notable susceptibility to cardiovascular disease (CVD) due to dyslipidemia's impact on the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP). Furthermore, Microalbuminuria, specifically type A2 and A3, was prevalent among our study participants, with females showing a significantly higher occurrence of A2 microalbuminuria compared to males. The association between microalbuminuria and dyslipidemia, especially the combination of high total cholesterol (TC) and high triglycerides (TG), emphasizes the importance of comprehensive screening protocols for both microalbuminuria and dyslipidemia in managing the cardiovascular risk profile of individuals with T1DM.

Abstract
New functional food products with health benefits are currently in high demand among health-conscious consumers. The present research aims to improve the functional properties of yogurt by adding peppermint hydroethanolic extract (PHE) at different doses. The impact of PHE (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) on yogurt was studied for acidity, pH, organoleptic quality, antioxidant activity, lipid peroxidation, and fatty acid profile. The results revealed that PHE is rich in phenolic compounds, of which rosmarinic acid was the main one (339.88 mg/g lyophilized extract) and has considerable antioxidant potential, which remarkably (p < .01) increased antioxidant capacity in yogurt by over 39.51%, even at a low dose of 2%, giving the product better protection against lipid peroxidation and preserving its physicochemical and sensory quality. At 4%, PHE increased significantly (p < .01) the content of omega-3 fatty acids, notably alpha-linolenic acid, in fortified yogurt compared with the control, and reduced (p < .01) the ratio of omega-6/omega-3, which dropped from 5.21 to 4.11. It looks feasible to prepare a yogurt with health-giving properties by adding Mentha piperita hydroethanolic extract at a concentration of up to 4% as an alternative to synthetic antioxidants, which would also extend its shelf life.

Abstract
Insulin resistance (IR) has been proposed as a potential risk factor for depression, a major common disorder affecting a significant proportion of adults worldwide. Based on this premise, this study systematically investigated all the studies examining the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a surrogate marker of IR, in patients with depression or suicidal ideas/attempts. Four online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science) were comprehensively searched. After screening, seven studies were included, comprised of 58,981 participants and 46.4% male. While there were some discrepancies among the reports of studies, most of the included studies reported higher levels of TyG index in patients with depression. Moreover, in most cases, a 1-unit increase in the TyG index was associated with significantly higher odds of depression. At last, higher TyG levels were associated with suicidal ideation and attempts. Therefore, this study emphasizes the critical need to further research in this regard and possibly integrate the TyG index measure with routine depression screening to avoid fatal events in the future.

Abstract
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) compromises walking and physical activity, which results in further loss of skeletal muscle. The cross-sectional area of the thigh muscle has been shown to be correlated with systemic skeletal muscle volume. In our previous pilot study, we observed an increase in thigh muscle mass following endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with proximal vascular lesions affecting the aortoiliac and femoropopliteal arteries. Considering the potential interactions between skeletal muscle, lipid profile, and glucose metabolism, we aimed to investigate the relationship between thigh muscle mass and apolipoproteins as well as glucose metabolism in PAD patients undergoing EVT. This study is a prespecified sub-study conducted as part of a pilot study. We prospectively enrolled 22 symptomatic patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and above-the-knee lesions, specifically involving the blood vessels supplying the thigh muscle. The mid-thigh muscle area was measured with computed tomography before and 6 months after undergoing EVT. Concurrently, we measured levels of apolipoproteins A1 (Apo A1) and B (Apo B), fasting blood glucose, 2 h post-load blood glucose (using a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test), and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Changes in thigh muscle area (delta muscle area: 2.5 ± 8.1 cm2) did not show significant correlations with changes in Apo A1, Apo B, fasting glucose, 2 h post-oral glucose tolerance test blood glucose, HbA1c, or Rutherford classification. However, among patients who experienced an increase in thigh muscle area following EVT (delta muscle area: 8.41 ± 5.93 cm2), there was a significant increase in Apo A1 (pre: 121.8 ± 15.1 mg/dL, 6 months: 136.5 ± 19.5 mg/dL, p < 0.001), while Apo B remained unchanged (pre: 76.4 ± 19.2 mg/dL, 6 months: 80.5 ± 4.9 mg/dL). Additionally, post-oral glucose tolerance test 2 h blood glucose levels showed a decrease (pre: 189.7 ± 67.5 mg/dL, 6 months: 170.6 ± 69.7 mg/dL, p = 0.075). Patients who exhibited an increase in thigh muscle area demonstrated more favorable metabolic changes compared to those with a decrease in thigh muscle area (delta muscle area: -4.67 ± 2.41 cm2). This pilot sub-study provides insights into the effects of EVT on thigh muscle, apolipoproteins, and glucose metabolism in patients with PAD and above-the-knee lesions. Further studies are warranted to validate these findings and establish their clinical significance. The trial was registered on the University Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN000047534).

Abstract
Background The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is a quick and inexpensive approach to measure insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the TyG index's ability to predict cardiovascular risk and determine the TyG index cutoff values in Syrian refugees. Methods A retrospective research study was conducted with 756 Syrian refugees. Data on demographics and clinical laboratory assessments were obtained from refugee's files. The formula Ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting plasma glucose (mg (dL)/2] was used to calculate the TyG index. The Framingham risk score was used to calculate ten-year cardiovascular risk. The TyG index cutoff point was determined using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Results Included participants had a mean age of 56.76 ± 10.78 years and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 27.42 ± 4.03 kg/m2. 28.57% of the subjects were smokers, and the majority were female (56.75%). A significant moderate correlation was observed between TyG index and Framingham score (r = 0.428, p < 0.001). ROC curve analysis for TyG index and Framingham score showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.741 (95% CI = 0.691-0.791; p < 0.001). The cutoff value of the TyG index to recognize intermediate/high risk Framingham risk score was 9.33, with a sensitivity of 64.3%, and specificity of 75.0%. Conclusion Our findings determine that, given a TyG index cutoff value of 9.33, the TyG index has a predictive ability to assess ten-year cardiovascular risk by comparison to the Framingham risk score in a high-risk group of Syrian refugees and can be used as an independent indicator of cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is closely associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS), is rarely reported in Tanzania, where MetS is prevalent. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of this condition in overweight and obese individuals and to correlate standard ultrasound diagnosis with triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI). METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was performed in 181 adult outpatients attending a general medical clinic. The presence of fatty liver was detected by ultrasound. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected and analyzed using STATA 15. To compare categorical variables, a chi-square test was employed, while a Student's t-test was used to compare continuous variables. Additionally, a multivariate regression analysis was conducted to identify the determinants of NAFLD. A significance level was set at p < 0.05. The discriminatory power of TyG and TyG-BMI for diagnosing NAFLD was evaluated using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve analysis and the Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) was reported. RESULTS The overall prevalence of NAFLD was 30.4% (55/181). The prevalence's of NAFLD in patients with class III obesity, class II obesity, class I obesity and overweight were 50.0% (12/24),, 38% (19/50), 23.7% (18/76), and 19.5% (6/31),respectively. NAFLD was strongly predicted by hyperuricemia (≥ 360 μmol/L) (p = 0.04) and TyG ≥ 8.99 (p = 0.003). The best cut-off values of TyG and TyG-BMI to predict NAFLD were 8.99 [AUC 0.735; sensitivity 70.9%, specificity 79.3%] and 312 [AUC 0.711; sensitivity 60% and specificity 75.4%] respectively. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of NAFLD is high among people with overweight and obesity in Tanzania. We did not find sufficient evidence to recommend the use of TyG and TyG-BMI as surrogates for hepatic ultrasound in detecting NAFLD, and further evaluation is recommended.

Abstract
Background Cancer cachexia-characterized by anorexia, body weight loss, skeletal muscle atrophy, and fat loss-affects nearly 80% of cancer patients and accounts for 20% of cancer deaths. Curcuma xanthorrhiza, known as Java turmeric, and its active compound xanthorrhizol (XAN) exhibit anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, the ameliorative effects of C. xanthorrhiza extract (CXE) and XAN on cancer-associated adipose atrophy remain unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of CXE and XAN on cancer cachexia-induced adipose tissue wasting in CT26 tumor-bearing mice. Methods CT26 cells were injected subcutaneously into the right flank of BALB/c mice to establish a cancer cachexia model. To evaluate the inhibitory effects of CXE and XAN on cancer cachexia, 50 and 100 mg/kg CXE and 15 mg/kg XAN were administered orally every day for 1 week. Results CXE and XAN administration significantly attenuated the loss of body weight and epidydimal fat mass by cancer cachexia. In epididymal adipose tissues, administration of CXE or XAN inhibited white adipose tissue browning by repressing expression of the thermogenic genes. Simultaneously, CXE or XAN attenuated fat catabolism through the downregulation of lipolytic genes. The administration of CXE or XAN induced the expression of genes associated with adipogenesis and lipogenesis-related genes. Moreover, CXE or XAN treatment was associated with maintaining metabolic homeostasis; regulating the expression of adipokines and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Conclusions CXE and XAN mitigate cancer-induced adipose tissue atrophy, primarily by modulating lipid metabolism and WAT browning, indicating their therapeutic potential for cachectic cancer patients.

Abstract
Citrus fruit essential oil is considered one of the widely studied essential oils while its leaves attract less attention although being rich in nearly the same composition as the peel and flowers. The leaves of bitter orange or sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) were extracted using three different techniques namely; hydrodistillation (HD), steam distillation (SD), and microwave-assisted distillation (MV) to compare their chemical composition. The three essential oil samples were analyzed through GC/FID and GC/MS analyses. The samples were tested in vitro using different antioxidant techniques (DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, FRAP, PBD, and MCA), neuroprotective enzyme inhibitory activities (acetylcholine and butyl choline enzymes), and antidiabetic activities (α-amylase and α-glucosidase). The results showed that thirty-five volatile ingredients were detected and quantified. Monoterpenes represented the most abundant class in the three essential oils followed by sesquiterpenes. C. aurantium essential oil carried potential antioxidant activity where SD exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, with values arranged in the following order: FRAP (200.43 mg TE/g), CUPRAC (138.69 mg TE/g), ABTS (129.49 mg TE/g), and DPPH (51.67 mg TE/g). SD essential oil also presented the most potent α-amylase (0.32) inhibition while the MV essential oil showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibition (2.73 mmol ACAE/g), followed by HD (2.53 mmol ACAE/g), and SD (2.46 mmol ACAE/g). The SD essential oil exhibited the highest BChE and AChE inhibitory activities (3.73 and 2.06 mg GALAE/g), respectively). Thus, bitter orange essential oil can act as a potential source of potent antioxidant, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective activities for future drug leads.

Abstract
Introduction Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is newly proposed nomenclature, and its diagnosis involves an algorithm that can be complicated and impractical for clinicians in real-world clinical settings. Thus, we investigated the association between MAFLD and modified triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) indices to find a more concise, feasible method for predicting MAFLD in everyday clinical care. Methods Data were obtained from people who voluntarily underwent health check-ups at the Health Promotion Centre of Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, from January 2017 to October 2020. Four indices were analyzed: TyG-body to mass index (BMI), TyG-waist circumference (WC), TyG, and the fatty liver index (FLI). The odds ratios for MAFLD according to each index were calculated using multiple logistic regression analyses, and the receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) and area under the ROC were obtained to find the predictive powers of each index. Results The final number of study participants was 22,391, 8,246 with MAFLD and 14,145 without MAFLD. The odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) from TyG-WC and TyG-BMI after adjusting for confounding variables were 12.484 (9.962-15.644) and 12.494 (9.790-15.946), respectively, for quartile 2, 54.332 (43.131-68.442) and 51.580 (40.495-65.699) for quartile 3, and 165.804 (130.243-211.076) and 128.592 (100.601-164.371) for quartile 4. The area under the ROC curve values for TyG-WC and TyG-BMI were 0.862 (0.857-0.867) and 0.867 (0.862-0.872), respectively. Conclusion The modified TyG indices are highly reliable markers for predicting MAFLD that clinicians can easily and practically apply in everyday, real-world, clinical care settings.

Abstract
This work aimed to identify the mechanisms by which taurine exerts its anti-obesity effects in the C57BL/6J ob/ob mice model and determine if taurine supplementation increases the amelioration of inflammation and lipogenesis linked genes in the adipose and liver tissues. Three groups of C57BL/6J mice were fed a standard chow diet for a period of 10 weeks the C57BL/6J normal group, the C57BL/6J ob/ob negative control group with no taurine intake and C57BL/6J ob/ob taurine group with taurine intake. Real time PCR was used to examine the gene expression profile in the experimental groups intrascapular brown adipose tissue (BAT), inguinal white adipose tissue (WAT) and liver. TNF-alpha, Ccl2, Adgre and illb genes that are associated with inflammation were found to have varying level of expression in the three tissues. In comparison to BAT and liver these genes were expressed at a much lower level in WAT, with enhanced serum adiponectin levels.

Abstract
Background Insulin resistance(IR) and inflammation have been regarded as common potential mechanisms in coronary heart disease (CHD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a novel biomarker of insulin resistance, System immune-inflammation index(SII) and Systemic inflammation response index(SIRI) are novel biomarkers of inflammation, these biomarkers have not been studied in CHD with NAFLD patients. This study investigated the correlation between the TyG index, SII index, and SIRI index and CHD risk among NAFLD patients. Methods This cross-sectional study included 407 patients with NAFLD in the Department of Cardiology, The Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University. Of these, 250 patients with CHD were enrolled in the NAFLD+CHD group and 157 patients without CHD were enrolled as NAFLD control. To balance covariates between groups, 144 patients were selected from each group in a 1:1 ratio based on propensity score matching (PSM). Potential influences were screened using Lasso regression analysis. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses and the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression were used to assess independent risk and protective factors for CHD. Construction of nomogram using independent risk factors screened by machine learning. The receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve was used to assess the ability of these independent risk factors to predict coronary heart disease. The relationship between the Gensini score and independent risk factors was reflected using the Sankey diagram. Results The LASSO logistic regression analysis and Logistic regression analyses suggest that TyG index (OR, 2.193; 95% CI, 1.242-3.873; P = 0.007), SII index (OR, 1.002; 95% CI, 1.001-29 1.003; P <0.001), and SIRI index (OR,1.483;95%CI,1.058-2.079,P=0.022) are independent risk factors for CHD. At the same time, Neutrophils, TG, and LDL-C were also found to be independent risk factors in patients, HDL-C was a protective factor for CHD in patients with NAFLD. Further analysis using three machine learning algorithms found these independent risk factors to have good predictive value for disease diagnosis, SII index shows the highest predictive value. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that combining the SII index, SIRI index, and TyG index can improve the diagnostic ability of non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis patients with CHD.ROC curve analysis showed that the combined analysis of these independent risk factors improved the predictive value of CHD(AUC: 0.751; 95% CI: 0.704-0.798; P <0.001). Conclusion TyG index, SII index, and SIRI index are all independent risk factors for CHD in patients with NAFLD and are strongly associated with prediction and the severity of CHD.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a primary cause of illness and death globally and its mechanism is still unclear. Different animal models have been created to evaluate the progression of atherosclerosis, allowing researchers to carefully control the circumstances of the experiment as well as the nutrition and environmental risk factors. To investigate the negative effects of various interventions, pathophysiological alterations might be generated utilizing genetic or pharmacological methods. These models' molecular and pathophysiological mechanisms have been clarified through experiments, and they have served as platforms for the creation of new drugs. Different models can be employed to address various research problems, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. In the current review study, various species of atherosclerosis models are discussed, along with the viability of using them in experiments.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is the major incentive for intestinal dysfunction in weaned piglets, which usually leads to growth retardation or even death. Silybin has caught extensive attention due to its antioxidant properties. Herein, we investigated the effect of dietary silybin supplementation on growth performance and determined its protective effect on paraquat (PQ)-induced intestinal oxidative damage and microflora dysbiosis in weaned piglets. In trial 1, a total of one hundred twenty healthy weaned piglets were randomly assigned into five treatments with six replicate pens per treatment and four piglets per pen, where they were fed basal diets supplemented with silybin at 0, 50, 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg for 42 days. In trial 2, a total of 24 piglets were randomly allocated to two dietary treatments with 12 replicates per treatment and 1 piglet per pen: a basal diet or adding 400 mg/kg silybin to a basal diet. One-half piglets in each treatment were given an intraperitoneal injection of paraquat (4 mg/kg of body weight) or sterile saline on day 18. All piglets were euthanized on day 21 for sample collection. The results showed that dietary supplementation with 400 mg/kg silybin resulted in a lower feed conversion ratio, diarrhea incidence, and greater antioxidant capacity in weaned piglets. Dietary silybin enhanced intestinal antioxidant capacity and mitochondrial function in oxidative stress piglets induced by PQ. Silybin inhibited mitochondria-associated endogenous apoptotic procedures and then improved the intestinal barrier function and morphology of PQ-challenged piglets. Moreover, silybin improved intestinal microbiota dysbiosis induced by the PQ challenge by enriching short-chain fatty-acid-producing bacteria, which augmented the production of acetate and propionate. Collectively, these findings indicated that dietary silybin supplementation linearly decreased feed conversion ratio and reduced diarrhea incidence in normal conditions, and effectively alleviated oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, intestinal damage, and microflora dysbiosis in weaned piglets.

Abstract
Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is derived from the flax plant, an annual herb. The primary relevance of flaxseed is in the human nutrition sector, where it is emerging as a significant functional food component due to its high level of active chemicals, which have been linked to health benefits. Flaxseed may be consumed in numerous forms, including milled, oil, and bakery items. The phytochemicals that are present in flaxseed have greatly drawn interest as bioactive molecules beneficial for health. It is naturally enriched with alpha-linolenic acid, omega-3 fatty acid, lignin, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside, and fiber which are physiologically active in the protection of some chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cerebrovascular stroke. Furthermore, the benefits of flaxseed eating have been demonstrated in the animal nutrition industry, resulting in healthier food from animal origin. In reality, the fatty acid profile of meat and fat in swine and poultry is directly impacted by the source of fat in the diet. Feeding omega-3-enriched diets with flaxseed will improve the omega-3 content in eggs and meat, enriching the products. The current study focuses on the latest evidence on the chemical makeup of flaxseed and its positive benefits.

Abstract
Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in GBA1 gene that encodes the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase. Up to now, specific treatment for GD cannot completely reverse bone complications. Bone is composed of different cell types; including osteoblasts, osteocytes and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts are present on bone surfaces and are derived from local mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Depending on environment conditions, MSCs could differentiate into osteoblasts and adipocytes. Mature adipocytes-secreted adipokines and free fatty acids affect both osteoblasts and osteoclasts formation/activity and therefore mediate skeletal homeostasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible alterations in GD adipocyte (GD Ad) that could contribute to bone complications. MSCs were grown in adipogenic media in order to evaluate expression of differentiation markers as PPAR-γ. PPAR-γ was observed into the nucleus of GD Ad, indicating that these cells are properly stimulated. However, these cells accumulate lesser lipid droplets (LDs) than Control Ad. In order to study lipid droplet metabolism, we evaluated the lipolysis of these structures by the measurement of free glycerol in culture supernatant. Our results indicated that GD Ad had an alteration in this process, evidenced by an increase in glycerol release. We have also evaluated two enzymes involved in LDs synthesis: fatty acid synthase (FASN) and stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase 1 (SCD1). The transcription of these genes was decreased in GD Ad, suggesting a dysfunction in the synthesis of LDs. In conclusion, our results show an alteration in LDs metabolism of GD Ad, independent of adipocyte differentiation process. This alteration would be caused by an increase in lipolysis in early stages of differentiation and also by a reduction of lipid synthesis, which could contribute with the skeletal imbalance in GD.

Abstract
Catalases are crucial antioxidant enzymes that regulate plants responses to different biotic and abiotic stresses. It has been previously shown that the activities of durum wheat catalase proteins (TdCAT1) were stimulated in the presence of divalent cations Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, and Ca2+. In addition, TdCAT1s can interact with calmodulins in calcium-independent manner, and this interaction stimulates its catalytic activity in a calcium-dependent manner. Moreover, this activity is further enhanced by Mn2+ cations. The current study showed that wheat catalase presents different phosphorylation targets. Besides, we demonstrated that catalase is able to interact with Mitogen Activated Proteins kinases via a conserved domain. This interaction activates wheat catalase independently of its phosphorylation status but is more promoted by Mn2+, Fe2+ and Ca2+ divalent cations. Interestingly, we have demonstrated that durum wheat catalase activity is differentially regulated by Mitogen Activated Proteins kinases and Calmodulins in the presence of calcium. Moreover, the V0 of the reaction increase gradually following the increasing quantities of Mn2+ divalent cations. Such results have never been described before and suggest i) complex regulatory mechanisms exerted on wheat catalase, ii) divalent cations (Mn2+; Mg2+; Ca2+ and Fe2+) act as key cofactors in these regulatory mechanisms.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer (PC) remains one of the most lethal malignancies across the world, which is due to delayed diagnosis and resistance to current therapies. The interactions between pancreatic tumor cells and their tumor microenvironment (TME) allow cancer cells to escape from anti-cancer therapies, leading to difficulties in treating PC. With endocrine function and lipid storage capacity, adipose tissue can maintain energy homeostasis. Direct or indirect interaction between adipocytes and PC cells leads to adipocyte dysfunction characterized by morphological change, fat loss, abnormal adipokine secretion, and fibroblast-like transformation. Various adipokines released from dysfunctional adipocytes have been reported to promote proliferation, invasion, metastasis, stemness, and chemoresistance of PC cells via different mechanisms. Additional lipid outflow from adipocytes can be taken into the TME and thus alter the metabolism in PC cells and surrounding stromal cells. Besides, the trans-differentiation potential enables adipocytes to turn into various cell types, which may give rise to an inflammatory response as well as extracellular matrix reorganization to modulate tumor burden. Understanding the molecular basis behind the protumor functions of adipocytes in PC may offer new therapeutic targets.

Abstract
A growing aging population is associated with increasing incidences of aging-related diseases and socioeconomic burdens. Hence, research into healthy longevity and aging is urgently needed. Longevity is an important phenomenon in healthy aging. The present review summarizes the characteristics of longevity in the elderly population in Bama, China, where the proportion of centenarians is 5.7-fold greater than the international standard. We examined the impact of genetic and environmental factors on longevity from multiple perspectives. We proposed that the phenomenon of longevity in this region is of high value for future investigations in healthy aging and aging-related disease and may provide guidance for fostering the establishment and maintenance of a healthy aging society.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular disease is the principal cause of mortality and morbidity in developed countries, leading to the formation of atherosclerosis plaques and thrombosis. Apoptosis of endothelial cells is one of the primary factors in vascular thrombosis. Lipids, when oxidized by endothelial cells, result in an increased thickness of the arterial wall. Iron is also recognized as an atherogenic element that induces atherosclerosis. There remains uncertainty about the antioxidative role of vitamin E in the formation of atherosclerosis. In this study, the authors evaluated the effect of iron and vitamin E on the apoptosis of endothelial cells in the carotid arteries of hypercholesterolemic male rabbits. METHOD Thirty white male rabbits were randomly divided into five groups and fed the following diet for six weeks: Group 1: control, Group 2: cholesterol (1%), Group 3: cholesterol (1%) + vitamin E (50 mg/kg), Group 4: cholesterol (1%) + Iron (50 mg/kg), and Group 5: cholesterol (1%) + vitamin E (50 mg/kg) + Iron (50 mg/kg). Serum cholesterol, TG, HDL, and LDL levels were assessed after six weeks. Finally, the animals were sacrificed with ketamine, and carotid arteries were removed. The samples were fixed in 10% formalin, and TUNEL staining was used after the tissue processing. Cell counts were carried out under a light microscope. RESULTS Vitamin E decreased Serum cholesterol and apoptotic endothelial cells in the hypercholesterolemic + vitamin E diet (P< 0.05). However, they increased significantly in the interference groups compared to the control group (P< 0.05). CONCLUSION According to our findings, vitamin E showed to have a beneficial effect on preventing cardiovascular diseases and may play a positive role in the prevention of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Acne vulgaris is a common neutrophil-driven inflammatory skin disorder in which Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) is known to play a key role. For decades, antibiotics have been widely employed to treat acne vulgaris, inevitably resulting in increased bacterial antibiotic resistance. Phage therapy is a promising strategy to combat the growing challenge of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, utilizing viruses that specifically lyse bacteria. Herein, we explore the feasibility of phage therapy against C. acnes. Eight novel phages, isolated in our laboratory, and commonly used antibiotics eradicate 100% of clinically isolated C. acnes strains. Topical phage therapy in a C. acnes-induced acne-like lesions mouse model affords significantly superior clinical and histological scores. Moreover, the decrease in inflammatory response was reflected by the reduced expression of chemokine CXCL2, neutrophil infiltration, and other inflammatory cytokines when compared with the infected-untreated group. Overall, these findings indicate the potential of phage therapy for acne vulgaris as an additional tool to conventional antibiotics.

Abstract
SCOPE Chronic hypernutrition promotes lipid accumulation in the body and excessive lipid accumulation leads to obesity. An increase in the number and size of adipocytes, a characteristic of obesity is closely associated with adipose dysfunction. Recent in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that probiotics may prevent this dysfunction by regulating lipid metabolism. However, the mechanisms of action of probiotics in obesity are not fully understood and their usage for treating obesity remains limited. METHODS AND RESULTS Bifidobacterium lactis IDCC 4301 is selected for its anti-obesity potential after evaluating inhibitory activity of pancreatic lipase and cholesterol reducing activity. Next, this study investigates the roles of B. lactis IDCC 4301 on lipid metabolism in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. B. lactis IDCC 4301 inhibits cell differentiation and lipid accumulation by suppressing the expression of adipogenic enzymes in 3T3-L1 cells. Moreover, the administration of B. lactis IDCC 4301 decreases body and adipose tissue weight, improves serum lipid levels, and downregulates adipogenic mRNA expression in HFD-fed mice. Additionally, metabolomic analysis suggests that 2-ketobutyrate should be a possible target compound against obesity. CONCLUSIONS B. lactis IDCC 4301 may be used as an alternative treatment for obesity.

Abstract
Ischemic stroke is highly concerning because it often leads to severe long-term neurological disability. Among clinical trials, ischemic stroke and inflammatory bowel disease interactions have been increasingly reported in recent years. Therefore, using bioinformatics approaches to explore novel protein interactions between them is of interest. We performed this exploratory analysis by using bioinformatics tools such as string to analyze gene data downloaded from NHGRI-GWAS data related to ischemic stroke and inflammatory bowel disease. We constructed a prospective protein interaction network for ischemic stroke and inflammatory bowel disease, identifying cytokine and interleukin-related signaling pathways, Spliceosome, Ubiquitin-Proteasome System (UPS), Thrombus, and Anticoagulation pathways as the crucial biological mechanisms of the network. Furthermore, we also used data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry (DIA-MS) to detect differential protein expression in eight samples, which also suggested that immune system, signal transduction, and hemostasis-related pathways are key signaling pathways. These findings may provide a basis for understanding the interaction between these two states and exploring possible molecular and therapeutic studies in the future.

Abstract
Objectives In this study, to find scientific evidence for the traditional use of Pergularia tomentosa as an anti-diabetic remedy, the effects of its aqueous extract on streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus in rats were evaluated. Materials and Methods Wistar rats were fasted overnight and diabetes mellitus was induced using streptozotocin (50 mg/kg body weight). The rats were randomly and equally divided into four groups (n=5): group I (normoglycaemic control), group II (diabetic rats), group III (diabetic rats treated with 200 mg/kg BW of an aqueous extract of P. tomentosa), group IV (normoglycemic rats treated with 200 mg/kg BW of an aqueous extract of P. tomentosa). Chemical profiling of the aqueous extract was carried out using liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization and multiple-stage linear ion-trap and orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/LTQOrbitrap/MS/MS). In addition, the quantitative determination of the main cardenolides in the extract was carried out by an analytical approach based on LC coupled to tandem mass spectrometry with ESI source and hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass analyzer (LC-ESI/QTrap/MS/MS). Results Aqueous extract of P. tomentosa showed a reasonable reduction in blood glucose level. Probably, the P. tomentosa effect on hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemic diabetic animals was associated with antioxidant properties, triglyceride levels, as well as liver enzymes. Meanwhile, LC-ESI/LTQOrbitrap/MS/MS analysis led to identification of double-linked cardenolides along with cardenolides and flavone glycosides as the main bioactive compounds. Conclusion The extract decreased the glucose level and induced a beneficial effect on the lipid profile, probably due to the presence of cardenolide glycosides.

Abstract
Sorafenib, an oral multiple kinase inhibitor, is the standardized treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). One strategy to improve HCC therapy is to combine agents that target key signaling pathways. In this study we set out to investigate the effect of combining sorafenib with either bevacizumab (anti-VEGF), panitumumab (anti-EGFR) or ramucirumab (anti-VEGFR2) on HepG2 cancer cell line with the aim of improving efficacy and possibility of therapeutic dose reduction of sorafenib.: HepG2 cancer cell line was treated with sorafenib alone or in combination with either bevacizumab, panitumumab or ramucirumab. Cell proliferation; apoptosis and cell cycle distribution; gene expression of VEGFR2, EGFR, MMP-9 and CASPASE3; the protein levels of pVEGFR2 and pSTAT3 and the protein expression of CASPASE3, EGFR and VEGFR2 were determined. Combined treatments of sorafenib with ramucirumab or panitumumab resulted in a significant decrease in sorafenib IC50. Sorafenib combination with ramucirumab or bevacizumab resulted in a significant arrest in pre-G and G0/G1 cell cycle phases, significantly induced apoptosis and increased the relative expression of CASPASE3 and decreased the anti-proliferative and angiogenesis markers´ MMP-9 and pVEGFR2 or VEGFR2 in HepG2 cells. A significant decrease in the levels of pSTAT3 was only detected in case of sorafenib-ramucirumab combination. The combined treatment of sorafenib with panitumumab induced a significant arrest in pre-G and G2/M cell cycle phases and significantly decreased the relative expression of EGFR and MMP-9. Sorafenib-ramucirumab combination showed enhanced apoptosis, inhibited proliferation and angiogenesis in HepG2 cancer cells. Our findings suggest that ramucirumab can be a useful as an adjunct therapy for improvement of sorafenib efficacy in suppression of HCC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There are inconsistent findings regarding the effect of lipid-lowering agents on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is an important player in cholesterol homeostasis and intracellular lipogenesis, and PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9-i) have been found to be efficient for pharmacological management of hyperlipidemia. AREAS COVERED Whether PCSK9 (itself) or PCSK9-i affects NAFLD is still disputed. To address this question, we review published preclinical and clinical studies providing evidence for the role of PCSK9 in and the effect of PCSK9-I on the development and pathogenesis of NAFLD. EXPERT OPINION The current evidence from a landscape of preclinical and clinical studies examining the role of PCSK9 in NAFLD shows controversial results. Preclinical studies indicate that PCSK9 associates with NAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) progression in opposite directions. In humans, it has been concluded that the severity of hepatic steatosis affects the correlation between circulating PCSK9 and liver fat content in humans, with a possible impact of circulating PCSK9 in the early stages of NAFLD, but not in the late stages. However, data from clinical trials with PCSK9-i reassure to the safety of these agents, although real-life long-term evidence is needed.

Abstract
Inhibition of adipocyte differentiation would be a key strategy to control obesity. Human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are a promising tool for adipocyte differentiation research. Thymoquinone (TQ) as a potent antioxidant molecule may inhibit adipocyte differentiation. Herein, we aim to investigate the inhibitory effect of TQ on lipid differentiation in ADSCs. Quantification of cell surface markers was used by Flow-Cytometry and the effect of TQ on cell viability was assessed using the AlamarBlue test. ADSCs were subjected to induction of differentiation in the presence of non-cytotoxic concentrations of TQ (6.25, 12.5 and 25 μg/mL). Lipid accumulation was assessed using the Oil-Red O staining technique. Moreover, the expression of PPARγ (Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ) and FAS (Fatty Acid Synthetase) proteins was evaluated using Western blotting. Flow-cytometry demonstrated the expression of CD44, CD90, and CD73 as mesenchymal stem cell markers on the cell surface. At concentrations ≤100 μg/mL of TQ, no significant difference in cell viability was observed compared to the control. Lipid accumulation in ADSCs significantly decreased at 25 μg/mL (P < 0.001) and 12.5 μg/mL (P < 0.01) of TQ. The findings of the qualitative examination of Lipid Droplets also confirmed these results. Western-blot showed that TQ at 12.5 (p < 0.05) and 25 μg/mL (p < 0.01) reduced FAS/β-actin ratio compared to the positive group. TQ also decreased the expression of PPARγ at 6.25 μg/mL but not at higher concentrations. In conclusion, TQ may reduce differentiation of fat stem cells into fat cells through inhibition of the expression of PPARγ and FAS proteins and might be a potential anti-obesity compound.

Abstract
The centenary of insulin discovery represents an important opportunity to transform diabetes from a fatal diagnosis into a medically manageable chronic condition. Insulin is a key peptide hormone and mediates the systemic glucose metabolism in different tissues. Insulin resistance (IR) is a disordered biological response for insulin stimulation through the disruption of different molecular pathways in target tissues. Acquired conditions and genetic factors have been implicated in IR. Recent genetic and biochemical studies suggest that the dysregulated metabolic mediators released by adipose tissue including adipokines, cytokines, chemokines, excess lipids and toxic lipid metabolites promote IR in other tissues. IR is associated with several groups of abnormal syndromes that include obesity, diabetes, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), cardiovascular disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and other abnormalities. Although no medication is specifically approved to treat IR, we summarized the lifestyle changes and pharmacological medications that have been used as efficient intervention to improve insulin sensitivity. Ultimately, the systematic discussion of complex mechanism will help to identify potential new targets and treat the closely associated metabolic syndrome of IR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior work has shown that combining bootstrap imputation with tree-based machine learning variable selection methods can provide good performances achievable on fully observed data when covariate and outcome data are missing at random (MAR). This approach however is computationally expensive, especially on large-scale datasets. METHODS We propose an inference-based method, called RR-BART, which leverages the likelihood-based Bayesian machine learning technique, Bayesian additive regression trees, and uses Rubin's rule to combine the estimates and variances of the variable importance measures on multiply imputed datasets for variable selection in the presence of MAR data. We conduct a representative simulation study to investigate the practical operating characteristics of RR-BART, and compare it with the bootstrap imputation based methods. We further demonstrate the methods via a case study of risk factors for 3-year incidence of metabolic syndrome among middle-aged women using data from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). RESULTS The simulation study suggests that even in complex conditions of nonlinearity and nonadditivity with a large percentage of missingness, RR-BART can reasonably recover both prediction and variable selection performances, achievable on the fully observed data. RR-BART provides the best performance that the bootstrap imputation based methods can achieve with the optimal selection threshold value. In addition, RR-BART demonstrates a substantially stronger ability of detecting discrete predictors. Furthermore, RR-BART offers substantial computational savings. When implemented on the SWAN data, RR-BART adds to the literature by selecting a set of predictors that had been less commonly identified as risk factors but had substantial biological justifications. CONCLUSION The proposed variable selection method for MAR data, RR-BART, offers both computational efficiency and good operating characteristics and is utilitarian in large-scale healthcare database studies.

Abstract
Post-stroke depression (PSD), a prevalent complication of stroke, causes poor outcomes. However, little is known about its prevalence and management among community-dwelling stroke survivors. Thus, we investigated the prevalence, awareness, and treatment of PSD in a community setting. A cross-sectional study was performed using representative data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Surveys 2014, 2016, and 2018. A total of 11,122 participants aged ≥ 40 years were categorized, including 343 stroke survivors and 10,779 non-stroke survivors. We then calculated and compared the prevalence, awareness (formal diagnosis of depression by a doctor), and treatment rates of depression between the two groups. Depression was defined as a score ≥ 10 in the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Depression was significantly more prevalent among stroke survivors than in non-stroke survivors (22.2% vs. 8.5%, respectively), while the differences in the awareness and treatment rates were insignificant. However, only 46.8% of stroke survivors with PSD were aware of their condition, and only 20.5% were receiving treatment. These results suggest that clinicians should more actively screen for and treat depression among stroke survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The effects of increased intracranial pulsatility on the severity of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in participants with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis (aICAS) remain uncertain. We aimed to investigate whether an increased pulsatility index (PI) is associated with WMH volume (WMHV) in individuals with aICAS. MATERIALS AND METHODS All participants were recruited from the Kongcun Town aICAS Study, including a total of 103 participants with aICAS and 98 healthy controls (age- and sex-matched). PI was assessed using transcranial Doppler ultrasound. The WMHV was calculated through the lesion segmentation tool system for the Statistical Parametric Mapping package based on magnetic resonance imaging. The association between PI and lnWMHV was analyzed by linear regression models adjusting for demographics, lifestyle, and vascular risk factors. RESULTS The lnWMHV and PI between the aICAS and control groups showed no significant differences (P = 0.171 and 0.287, respectively). In a multivariable model, age ≥ 60 years and male sex (P = 0.000 and 0.006, respectively) were significant predictors of lnWMHV in the aICAS group. In sex-stratified analyses, there was a significant association between PI and lnWMHV in males with aICAS (P = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS This study suggest there might be a likely association between increased intracranial pulsatility and WMH burden in males with aICAS.

Abstract
Exosomes are spherical bilayer membrane vesicles with an average diameter of 40-100 nm. These particles perform a wide range of biological activities due to their contents, including proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, lncRNA, and miRNA. Exosomes are involved in inflammation induction, oxidative stress and apoptosis, which can be effective in endothelial dysfunction. Due to the induction of mentioned processes in the endothelial cells, the intercellular connections are destroyed, cell permeability increases and finally cell efficiency decreases and functional defects occur. Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) are of consequences of endothelial dysfunction. Thus by identifying the exosome signaling pathways, which induce inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, endothelial dysfunction and subsequently CVDs can be reduced; exosomes can be used for appropriate target therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lean NAFLD may differ from NAFLD found in overweight or obese patients. We used the UK biobank to conduct a cross-sectional study that examined features that distinguish lean NAFLD from overweight or obese NAFLD. METHODS MRI-PDFF data were used to identify patients with NAFLD, with NAFLD defined as PDFF ≥ 5%. BMI patient cohorts were identified, with lean defined as a BMI < 25, and overweight or obese defined as a BMI ≥ 25. Variables of interest to fatty liver disease, including single nucleotide polymorphisms, were chosen from the UK biobank data portal. Logistic regression was used to generate models predictive of NAFLD in each cohort. RESULTS 1007 patients had NAFLD, and of these, 871 had BMI ≥ 25, and 136 BMI < 25. Factors associated with NAFLD in patients with BMI < 25 included male sex, white blood cell count, red blood cell count, triglycerides, ALT, creatinine, visceral adipose tissue, rs58542926 T, and rs738409 G. In contrast, factors associated with NAFLD in patients with BMI ≥ 25 included male sex, waist circumference, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, serum glucose, ALT, creatinine, urate, visceral adipose tissue, rs1260326 T, rs1044498 C, rs58542926 T, and rs738409 G. For lean patients, our generated prediction score had an AUC of 0.92, sensitivity of 0.90 and specificity of 0.81. For overweight or obese patients, the prediction score had an AUC of 0.86, sensitivity of 0.87 and specificity of 0.70. CONCLUSIONS Our analysis suggests that lean and overweight or obese NAFLD are distinct entities. We have developed a risk score incorporating both clinical and genetic factors that accurately classify lean patients with NAFLD, with the potential to serve as a tool for screening purposes.

Background
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the world’s most common type of liver disease caused due to overconsumption of alcohol. The liver supports the best level of tissue damage by hefty drinking since it is the binding site of ethanol digestion. This disease can progress to alcoholic steatohepatitis from alcoholic fatty liver, which implies steatosis has become the most punctual reaction to hefty drinking and is portrayed by the deposition of fat hepatocytes. In addition, steatosis can advance to steatohepatitis, a more extreme, provocative sort of liver damage described by hepatic inflammation. Constant and unnecessary liquor utilization delivers a wide range of hepatic sores, fibrosis and cirrhosis, and sometimes hepatocellular carcinoma. Most people consuming > 40 g of liquor each day create alcoholic fatty liver (AFL); notwithstanding, just a subset of people will grow further developed infection. Hereditary, epigenetic, and non-hereditary components may clarify the impressive interindividual variety in the ALD phenotype.

This systematic review is to classify new candidate genes associated with alcoholic liver disorders, such as RASGRF2, ALDH2, NFE2L2, ADH1B, PNPLA3, DRD2, MTHFR, TM6SF2, IL1B, and CYP2E1, MBOAT7 as well as to revise the functions of each gene in its polymorphic sequence. The information obtained from the previously published articles revealed the crucial relationship between the genes and ALD and discussed each selected gene’s mechanism.
Conclusion
The aim of this review is to highlight the candidate genes associated with the ALD, and the evidence of this study is to deliberate the part of genetic alterations and modifications that can serve as an excellent biological maker, risk predictors, and therapeutic targets for this disease.

Abstract
Background The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and the incisionless endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) weight loss procedures require further investigation of their efficacy, safety and patient-centered outcomes in the Australian setting. Methods The aim was to examine the 6- and 12-month weight loss efficacy, safety, and weight-related quality of life (QoL) of adults with obesity who received the ESG or LSG bariatric procedure with 12+ months of adjuvant multidisciplinary pre- and postprocedural support. Data were from a two-arm prospective cohort study that followed patients from baseline to 12-months postprocedure from a medical center in Queensland. Percent excess weight loss (%EWL) was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes were body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, android:gynoid ratio, bone mineral content) via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, weight-related QoL, lipid, glycemic, and hepatic biochemistry, and adverse events. Results 16 ESG (19% attrition; 81.2% female; aged:41.4 (SD: 10.4) years; BMI: 35.5 (SD: 5.2) kg/m2) and 45 LSG (9% attrition; 84.4% female; aged:40.4 (SD: 9.0) years; BMI: 40.7 (SD: 5.6) kg/m2) participants were recruited. At 12-months postprocedure, ESG %EWL was 57% (SD: 32%; p < 0.01) and LSG %EWL was 79% (SD: 24%; p < 0.001). ESG and LSG cohorts improved QoL (19.8% in ESG [p > 0.05]; 48.1% in LSG [p < 0.05]), liver function (AST: − 4.4 U/L in ESG [p < 0.05]; − 2.7 U/L in LSG [p < 0.05]), HbA1c (− 0.5% in ESG [p < 0.05]; − 0.1% in LSG [p < 0.05]) and triglycerides (− 0.6 mmol/L in ESG [p > 0.05]; − 0.4 mmol/L in LSG [P < 0.05]) at 12-months. Both cohorts reduced fat mass (p < 0.05). The ESG maintained but LSG decreased fat-free mass at 6-months (p < 0.05); and both cohorts lost fat-free mass at 12-months (p < 0.05). There were no adverse events directly related to the procedure. The ESG reported 25% mild-moderate adverse events possibly related to the procedure, and the LSG reported 27% mild-severe adverse events possibly related to the procedure. Conclusions In this setting, the ESG and LSG were safe and effective weight loss treatments for obese adults alongside multidisciplinary support. Patients who elected the ESG maintained fat-free mass at 6-months but both cohorts lost fat-free mass at 12-months postprocedure. Patients who elected the LSG had large and significant improvements to weight-related quality of life. Further well-powered studies are required to confirm these findings. Abstract
Dyslipidemia, a major contributor to cardiovascular diseases, is rapidly increasing in Asian countries including Bangladesh. In addition to the cardiovascular system, abnormal lipid levels are also known to cause complications in renal and hepatic systems. The data regarding dyslipidemia and its relationship with liver enzymes are scarce for the Bangladeshi population. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of dyslipidemia and determine the relationship between lipid profile and liver enzymes in Bangladeshi adults. A total of 405 participants (318 males and 87 females) were enrolled in the study. Serum levels of TG, TC, LDL, HDL and liver enzymes including ALT, AST, GGT and ALP were analyzed using standard methods. Dyslipidemia and liver function tests abnormalities were defined according to the international standard guidelines. The association between elevated lipid profile markers and liver enzyme abnormalities was assessed by logistic regression analysis. Overall, the prevalence of elevated TG, TC, LDL and low HDL were 30.9%, 23.7%, 26.2% and 78.8%, respectively. On the other hand, the prevalence of elevated liver enzymes ALT, AST, GGT and ALP were 18.8%, 21.6%, 12.9% and 21.9%, respectively. Dyslipidemia and liver enzyme abnormalities were higher in diabetic and hypertensive participants than in the healthy participants. About 61% of participants with dyslipidemia had at least one or more elevated liver enzymes. In regression analysis, an independent association was observed between serum GGT and all lipid components. In conclusion, a high prevalence of dyslipidemia and liver enzyme abnormalities were observed among the study participants. Of the four liver enzymes, the serum levels of GGT showed an independent association with all lipid components. Moreover, this study indicates that subjects with dyslipidemia often have a higher chance of having liver diseases than subjects with no dyslipidemia. However, large-scale prospective studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of lipid-induced hepatic dysfunction in the Bangladeshi population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The production of lipid-laden cells in macrophages after significant ingestion of oxidized low-density lipoprotein is considered the most critical phase in the creation of atherosclerotic lesions, which is known as foam cell formation. Targeting foam cell development to find a potential therapeutic strategy for the management of atherosclerosis has yielded numerous promising outcomes. Multiple variables influence foam cell growth, including scavenger receptor expression, cholesterol transporter expression acyl CoA: cholesterol acyltransferase activity, and neutral cholesteryl ester hydrolase activity. Plants used during herbal therapy have been shown to assist with a variety of ailments. RESULT In this study, we found medicinal plants and their bioactive components suppress foam cell formation in a variety of ways; some inhibit cholesterol transporter and lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 upregulation, while others inhibit the function of acyl CoA: cholesterol acyltransferase activity, and neutral cholesteryl ester hydrolase activity. CONCLUSION Recent study findings related to the synthesis of the new active component from plant sources by focusing on the typical process involved in the generation of foam cells. We're also looking at using a cellular target-based therapeutic approach to generate novel plant-based medications for the cure of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Background and aims There is a bi-directional association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a novel surrogate marker of insulin resistance. In this population-based study, we aimed firstly to investigate the association of the TyG-index with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) risk. Methods This case-control study used the data from the first phase of the Persian Cohort Study in Sabzevar. Of 4,241 participants aged 35 to 70 years, we identified and recruited 968 MAFLD cases and 964 age- and sex-adjusted controls. Demographic, lifestyle, anthropometric, and biochemical information were collected. We calculated TyG and a new index combined of TyG and alanine aminotransferase (TyG-ALT). We used the multivariable unconditional logistic regression model to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) of the TyG and TyG-ALT for having MAFLD. Results Among those in the highest relative to the lowest TyG and TyG-ALT tertiles, the multivariable-adjusted ORs were 12.01 (95% CI [confidence interval] 9.03 - 15.98; P trend < 0.001) and 10.89 (95% CI 7.66 - 15.48; P trend = 0.001), respectively. The area under the curves (AUC) for the TyG-index to predict MAFLD was 8.62, resulting in a cut-off value of 8.62 with a sensitivity of 81.66% and specificity of 75.36%. Conclusions The higher TyG and TyG-ALT scores were significantly positively associated with higher MAFLD risk in the Iranian population.

Abstract
Background: The association between serum vitamin A and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains uncertain due to inconsistent results and scarce longitudinal data. We examined the prospective associations between serum vitamin A and the evolution of the NAFLD severity score as well as the potential mediating effects in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. Method: A total of 2658 adults (between 40-75 years of age) were included in the analysis. We determined the serum concentrations of vitamin A at the onset of the study (the baseline), and the degree of NAFLD after years 3 and 6. Results: Subjects were classified into stable, progressed, and improved groups according to the changes in their severity score (0-3) of NAFLD between two visits. Analyses of covariance showed that the serum VA concentrations were positively associated with NAFLD progression (all p-trend < 0.05). After adjusting for potential confounders, the mean differences in the serum vitamin A were 7.7% lower in the improved group than those in the progressed group among the total population. Path analyses showed that vitamin A was positively associated with the serum retinol-binding protein 4, triglycerides, insulin resistance, and body mass index (standardized β 0.065-0.304, all p < 0.001), and all of these factors positively correlated with the prevalence and progression of NAFLD (standardized β 0.045-0.384, all p < 0.01). Conclusions: A higher serum vitamin A concentration was associated with NAFLD progression, which might be mediated by increases in the serum retinol-binding protein 4, triglycerides, insulin resistance, and body mass index.

Abstract
The present study evaluates the concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including Pb, Cd, As, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Ni, in vegetable oils through a meta-analytic approach. The published studies in relation to the concentrations of PTEs in vegetable oils were retrieved from major international databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase followed by meta-analysis. Moreover, the health risk assessment was evaluated using total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) by a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) model. According to the results of 51 articles included among 958 retrieved studies, the concentrations of the PTEs were as follows: Cd ≈As (0.110 mg/kg) > Pb (0.086 mg/kg) in cottonseed, canola, and olive oil and Fe (12.964 mg/kg) > Zn (1.044 mg/kg) > Ni (0.893 mg/kg) > Cu (0.264 mg/kg) in cottonseed, olive, and soybean for trace elementals, respectively. Based on the continent type, the higher concentration of Cd, As, and Pb was related to PAHO (American region) and AFRO (African region), and the higher concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, and Ni were observed in WPRO (Western Pacific Region), EMRO (Eastern Mediterranean Region), and AFRO. On the other hand, non-carcinogenic health risk assessment of the PTEs indicated that there was a different risk pattern in various countries, and the TTHQ level in adult groups was lower than 1. It can be concluded that the consumption of vegetable oils is safe and does not pose risk to the health of consumers.

Abstract
The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were fed diets with three experimental feeds, a control diet (Control, crude protein (CP): 54.52%, crude lipid (CL): 11.45%), a low-protein diet with lysophospholipid (LP-Ly, CP: 52.46%, CL: 11.36%), and a low-lipid diet with lysophospholipid (LL-Ly, CP: 54.43%, CL: 10.19%), respectively. The LP-Ly and LL-Ly groups represented the addition of 1 g/kg of lysophospholipids in the low-protein and low-lipid groups, respectively. After a 64-day feeding trial, the experimental results showed that the growth performance, hepatosomatic index, and viscerosomatic index of largemouth bass in both the LP-Ly and LL-Ly groups were not significantly different compared to those in the Control group (P > 0.05). The condition factor and CP content of whole fish were significantly higher in the LP-Ly group than those in the Control group (P < 0.05). Compared with the Control group, the serum total cholesterol level and alanine aminotransferase enzyme activity were significantly lower in both the LP-Ly group and the LL-Ly group (P < 0.05). The protease and lipase activities in the liver and intestine of both group LL-Ly and group LP-Ly were significantly higher than those of the Control group (P < 0.05). Compared to both the LL-Ly group and the LP-Ly group, significantly lower liver enzyme activities and gene expression of fatty acid synthase, hormone-sensitive lipase, and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 were found in the Control group (P < 0.05). The addition of lysophospholipids increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Cetobacterium and Acinetobacter) and decreased the abundance of harmful bacteria (Mycoplasma) in the intestinal flora. In conclusion, the supplementation of lysophospholipids in low-protein or low-lipid diets had no negative effect on the growth performance of largemouth bass, but increased the activity of intestinal digestive enzymes, enhanced the hepatic lipid metabolism, promoted the protein deposition, and regulated the structure and diversity of the intestinal flora.

Abstract
Background: The association between the CYP17A1 and ATP2B1 SNPs and essential hypertension (referred to as hypertension) is far from being consistent. In addition to the heterogeneity of hypertension resulting in inconsistent results, gene–gene and gene–environment interactions may play a major role in the pathogenesis of hypertension rather than a single gene or environmental factor. Methods: A case–control study consisting of 1,652 individuals (hypertension, 816; control, 836) was conducted in Maonan ethnic minority of China. Genotyping of the four SNPs was performed by the next-generation sequencing technology. Results: The frequencies of minor alleles and genotypes of four SNPs were different between the two groups (p < 0.001). According to genetic dominance model analysis, three (rs1004467, rs11191548, and rs17249754) SNPs and two haplotypes (CYP17A1 rs1004467G-rs11191548C and ATP2B1 rs1401982G-rs17249754A) were negatively correlated, whereas rs1401982 SNP and the other two haplotypes (CYP17A1 rs1004467A-rs11191548T and ATP2B1 rs1401982A-rs17249754G) were positively associated with hypertension risk (p ≤ 0.002 for all). Two best significant two-locus models were screened out by GMDR software involving SNP–environment (rs11191548 and BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2) and haplotype–environment (CYP17A1 rs1004467G-rs11191548C and BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2) interactions (p ≤ 0.01). The subjects carrying some genotypes increased the hypertension risk. Conclusions: Our outcomes implied that the rs1004467, rs11191548, and rs17249754 SNPs and CYP17A1 rs1004467G-rs11191548C and ATP2B1 rs1401982G-rs17249754A haplotypes have protective effects, whereas the rs1401982 SNP and CYP17A1 rs1004467A-rs11191548T and ATP2B1 rs1401982A-rs17249754G haplotypes showed adverse effect on the prevalence of hypertension. Several SNP–environment interactions were also detected.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and abdominal obesity are escalating in South Asian countries. It is well established that MetS is associated with increased risk for both Type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. South Asians have an increased risk of MetS due to a variety of factors including unhealthy lifestyle and their unique body composition. AREAS COVERED In this review, we discuss the prevalence, associated risk factors, and evidence-based preventive and curative strategies for MetS and abdominal obesity in South Asians. A literature search through PubMed®, Web of Science®, and Scopus® was performed for studies published before 31st April 2021. A combination of the following keywords was used with the names of the individual South Asian countries: 'metabolic syndrome,' 'syndrome X,' 'abdominal obesity,' 'central obesity,' 'visceral obesity,' 'prevention,' and 'management.' EXPERT OPINION According to current evidence, MetS and abdominal obesity are highly prevalent among South Asians. Several risk factors, such as lifestyle, socio-demography, cultural, and body composition, are associated with MetS. Limited research shows culturally tailored lifestyle interventions are effective in preventing and managing MetS and abdominal obesity among South Asians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the past few years, the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids have been reported in the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) complications.This study evaluated the effects of Camelina sativa oil (CSO) supplementation as one of the richest dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids on glucose homeostasis,inflammation, metabolic endotoxemia, and oxidative stress in NAFLD patients. METHODS A total of 46 patients with NAFLD were allocated to either an intervention (20 g/d CSO) or placebo (20 g/d sunflower oil) group receiving a calorie-restricted diet for 12 weeks. Fasting plasma levels of glycemic indices, hs-CRP, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), antioxidant enzymes activity, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α), and uric acid were measured at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS The CSO supplementation led to significant differences in insulin concentration, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), hs-CRP, LPS, TAC, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, MDA and 8-iso-PGF2α between the two groups at end of the study (ANCOVA, P < .05). Hs-CRP decreased significantly in both groups (pair-t-test, P < .05). Insulin concentration, quantitative insulin sensitivity check index, LPS, TAC, SOD, glutathione peroxidase activity, MDA and 8-iso-PGF2α changed significantly only in CSO group (P < .05). CONCLUSION These findings indicate that CSO may improve glycemia, inflammation, metabolic endotoxemia, and oxidative stress status in patients with NAFLD.

Abstract
Serum uric acid (SUA) level has been suggested to be associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. However, little is known about the relationship between SUA and liver enzymes activity in the general population. The present study aimed to assess the relationship between SUA and serum liver enzymes in an adult population in Bangladesh. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 410 blood samples were collected from apparently healthy adults aged > 18 years. SUA, liver enzymes, lipid profile and other biochemical markers were measured in the collected samples by using standard methods. Multinomial logistic regression model was used to assess the relationship between SUA and elevated levels of liver enzymes among the participants. Overall, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was 30.1% with 32.2% in male and 18.6% in female participants. About 33% of the participants had at least one or more elevated levels of liver enzymes. The mean level of SUA was significantly higher in males (389.3 ± 96.9 µmol/L) than in the female (290.4 ± 89.8 µmol/L) subjects (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference in the mean levels of serum ALT and GGT between the male (34.5 ± 16.0 U/L and 26.7 ± 19.5 U/L, respectively) and female (25.0 ± 13.0 U/L and 19.5 ± 13.2 U/L, respectively) participants (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). An increasing trend was observed in the mean levels of serum ALT and GGT across the SUA quartile groups (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). SUA showed a positive and significant correlation with serum ALT (p < 0.001) and GGT (p < 0.01). In further statistical analysis after adjustment for potential confounders, SUA showed an independent and significant association with serum ALT and GGT in all regression models. In conclusion, SUA was strongly associated with serum levels of ALT and GGT after adjustment for potential confounders. More prospective studies are needed to clarify the complex relationship between SUA and liver enzymes in the general population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the relationship of Apolipoprotein E (APOE) and solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 1B1 (SLCO1B1) gene polymorphisms with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS 1,129 CAD patients and 1,014 non-CAD controls were included in the study, and relevant information and medical records were collected. The single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed, including rs429358, rs7412 in APOE gene and rs2306283, rs4149056 in SLCO1B1 gene. RESULTS The CAD patients' average age was 66.3 ± 10.7 years, while 65.5 ± 12.0 years in controls. The frequencies of APOE allele ɛ3, ɛ4, and ɛ2 were 83.01%, 10.08%, and 6.91% respectively. There were statistically significant differences in genotype ɛ3/ɛ4 (χ2 = 8.077, p = 0.005) in CAD patients compared with the controls. The SLCO1B1 genotype *1b/*1b and haplotype *1b showed the highest frequency in the study sample. Moreover, ε4 carriers had significantly lower HDL-C, Apo-A1 levels than ε3 carriers among CAD patients, while ε2 carriers showed lower LDL-C, Apo-B level, and higher Apo-A1/Apo-B level than ε3 and ε4 carriers. In controls, ε2 carriers showed lower LDL-C and Apo-B level, higher Apo-A1, and Apo-A1/Apo-B level than ε4 carriers. Logistic regression analysis showed that high LDL-C and Apo-B level, low HDL-C level, smoking, and the ε4 allele were risks for the presence of CAD. CONCLUSIONS APOE ε4 allele may be associated with susceptibility to CAD in southern Chinese Hakka population. It indicated that the APOE SNPs rs429358 and rs7412 are associated with CAD, but not SNPs rs2306283 and rs4149056 of SLCO1B1 gene.

Abstract
The association between the phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) gene rs4810479 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and serum lipid levels is largely unknown. This investigation aimed to evaluate the relationship between the PLTP rs4810479 SNP, several environmental risk factors, and serum lipid parameters in the Chinese Maonan and Han nationalities. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism, gel electrophoresis, and direct sequencing were employed to determine the PLTP rs4810479 genotypes in 633 Maonan and 646 Han participants. The frequencies of CC, CT, and TT genotypes and the C allele were different between Maonan and Han groups (29.07%, 53.08%, 17.85%, and 55.61% vs. 35.60%, 49.70%, 14.70%, and 60.45%, respectively, P < 0.05). The C allele carriers in the Maonan group had higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels than the C allele noncarriers, but this finding was only found in Maonan males but not in females. The C allele carriers in Han males had lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels than the C allele noncarriers. Serum lipid profiles were also affected by several traditional cardiovascular risk factors in both populations. There might be an ethnic- and/or sex-specific association between the PLTP rs4810479 SNP and serum lipid traits.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 has mutation capability, and there are no specific drug therapies that are available to fight or inhibit the proteins of this virus. The present study aims to investigate the binding affinity of the bioactive and synthetic compounds with the main protease (Mpro) enzymes and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE 2) by computational approach. PASS prediction, pharmacokinetics, and toxicological properties prediction studies were performed through the Google PASS prediction and Swiss ADME/T website. Besides, molecular docking studies were accomplished by BIOVIA Discovery Studio 2020, UCSF Chimera, and PyRx autodock vina. Results The docking scores were inferred and the selected compounds showed results varying from −3.2 to −9.8 (kcal/mol). Theaflavin scored the highest docking score to the 5REB, 6VW1, and 1R42 enzymes and showed the binding affinity as −6.3 kcal/mol, −9.8 kcal/mol, and −8.6 kcal/mol, respectively. Again, kaempferol showed the best binding affinity to the 7BQY (−7.1 kcal/mol) and 6Y2FB (−6.6 kcal/mol) enzymes. All the chemical constituents showed better probability in action in pass prediction analysis. Besides, no ligands (except theaflavin) have any conflict with Lipinski’s rules of five, which authorized the drug probability of these ligands. Conclusion Therefore, the selected compounds could be considered a potential herbal treatment source against SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Background
Diabetes mellitus (DM), an endocrine disease is characterized by increased level of blood glucose. Diabetes may affect other functions of the body and organs including, renal function and lipid metabolism. Pandanus tectorius (P. tectorius) Parkinson ex Du Roi is a small tree used in folk medicine in treatment of many diseases.
Methods
Diabetes in rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight for 3 days. Water and ethanol extracts of root, stem and leave of P. tectorius were given to rats at 200 mg/kg body weight at day 3. Rats were sacrificed on day 4 after 12 h fasting. Serum glucose and other biochemical parameters like liver enzymes; [alanine aminotransferases (ALT), aspartate aminotransferases (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)], kidney parameters (urea & creatinine), lipid profile [total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides] and coronary artery risk index (CRI) were estimated in blood serum. Antioxidant potential, polyphenol content and phytochemical constituents in different parts of P. tectorius were also determined.
Results
Results showed that water extract of stem and ethanol extract of root of P. tectorius produced maximum fall in sugar level of alloxan diabetic rats. Extracts of all three plant parts significantly dropped the increased level of urea and creatinine with maximum reduction in creatinine was observed by water extract of root. P.tectorius extracts showed positive effect on liver enzymes and lipid profile by bringing them closer to normal range in comparison to alloxan diabetic control rats. Phytochemical screening indicated presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and saponin in P. tectorius. In DPPH free radical scavenging test the highest antioxidant potential was found in water extract of roots, while ethanol extract of stem also showed good activity.
Conclusion
The study demonstrated that different parts of P.tectorius have potential to attenuate diabetes and diabetes related complications like, liver, kidney dysfunction and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our study aimed to determine the association between homocysteine levels and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in middle-aged and elderly adults in a community in northern Taiwan. METHODS Participants in our study included adults aged 50 to 85 years old during community health examinations in 2019. A total of 396 people were enrolled, the ethnicity of all participants is Chinese. We divided participants according to tertiles of ln[homocysteine] level (low, middle and high groups). The CVD risk was calculated by the Framingham cardiovascular risk score (FRS). An FRS ≥ 20% indicated high CVD risk. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between homocysteine level and other cardio-metabolic risk factors while adjusting for age. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association of high and middle ln[homocysteine] groups with high CVD risk after adjusting age, sex, uric acid, creatinine, and body mass index (BMI). The Youden index and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were performed to determine the optimized cut-off value. RESULTS There were 396 people enrolled for analysis; 41.4% of participants were male, and the average age was 64.79 (± 8.76). In our study, we showed a positive correlation of homocysteine with FRS. In the logistic regression models, higher ln[homocysteine] levels was associated with higher CVD risk with a odds ratio (OR) of 2.499 and 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.214 to 5.142 in the high homocysteine level group compared with the low homocysteine group after adjusting for traditional CVD risk factors. The area under the ROC curve was 0.667, and a ln[homocysteine] cut-off value of 2.495 µmol/L was determined. CONCLUSIONS Middle-aged and elderly people with increased homocysteine levels were associated with higher FRSs in this Taiwan community. Furthermore, homocysteine was an independent risk factor for high CVD risk in this study.
