Abstract
Associations between different sarcopenia definitions and the risk of injurious falls were investigated in 75-80-year-old women in the Swedish SUPERB cohort. Only sarcopenia according to the Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) definition was associated with incident injurious falls with and without fractures in older women. PURPOSE To investigate the association between three commonly used sarcopenia definitions and the risk of injurious falls in a population of older Swedish women. METHODS A total of 2,883 75-80-year-old women with complete data on relevant sarcopenia definitions from the Swedish SUPERB cohort were studied. Sarcopenia was defined based on the Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC: low handgrip strength and gait speed), revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2: low appendicular lean mass index (ALMI, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived), appendicular lean mass (kg)/height (m2), hand grip strength (kg), or low chair stand time (s)), and Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS: low ALMI and hand grip strength (kg) or low gait speed (m/s)). Questionnaires captured the occurrence of falls in the past 12 months. Incident injurious falls were identified using national registers. Cox regression (hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI)) analyses were performed without adjustment and after adjustment for age, body mass index, previous falls, and the Charlson comorbidity index. RESULTS During a median (IQR) follow-up time of 7.06 (6.2-7.9) years, there were 491 injurious falls without fracture and 962 injurious falls when also including falls resulting in a fracture. Sarcopenia according to EWGSOP2 and AWGS was not associated with an increased risk of injurious falls. Individuals with sarcopenia defined by SDOC had a higher risk of injurious falls with and without fracture (HR 2.11; 95% CI, 1.63-2.73 and HR, 2.16; 95% CI, 1.55-3.02, respectively). CONCLUSION Sarcopenia definitions confined to muscle function and strength such as SDOC, rather than including DXA-determined ALMI (EWGSOP2 and AWGS), are associated with incident injurious falls with and without fractures in older women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of stroke-related sarcopenia has been noted; however, epidemiological data and interventions that increase or reduce the incidence of stroke-related sarcopenia remain lacking. METHODS Studies on stroke-related sarcopenia were included in association or interventional analyses. All analyses were performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Two evaluators independently extracted the data. RESULTS Female stroke patients had a higher preference for sarcopenia than male patients (pooled odds ratio [OR] = 0.670, 95 % CI 0.533-0.842, p = 0.001). Although stroke patients without drug use have improved skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) (MD = 0.272, 95 % CI 0.087-0.457, p = 0.004), handgrip strength (HGS) was not significantly altered (MD = -0.068, 95 % CI -0.221-0.076, p = 0.354). Stroke patients with nutrient interventions have improved SMI (MD = -0.354, 95 % CI -0.635- -0.073, p = 0.014) and HGS (MD = -0.394, 95 % CI -0.678- -0.111, p = 0.006); the synergistic effect of rehabilitation exercise has not been ruled out. Whether a sex difference exists in these interventions remains to be investigated. The underlying pathological mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies for this disease are discussed. CONCLUSION Sex difference, proteostasis, and mitochondrial function may impact the incidence of stroke-related sarcopenia. Understanding the underlying pathological mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets for this disease will provide new insights into disease treatment, prevention, and drug development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smart wearable technology has potential benefits for promoting physical activity and preventing sarcopenia. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of a wearable activity tracker with 2-stage goal-setting for daily steps on older adults' physical activity and sarcopenia indicators. METHODS The study used a clustered trial design and was conducted in March to June 2022. Participants were community-dwelling adults older than 60 years who were recruited from 4 community centers in Taipei City. The intervention was designed with 2-stage goals set to 5000 steps/day in the first 4 weeks and 7500 steps/day in the final 4 weeks while wearing a commercial wearable activity tracker. Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires, a body composition analyzer, a handle grip tester, and 5 sit-to-stand tests. RESULTS All 27 participants in the experimental group and 31 participants in the control group completed the 8-week intervention. Total and light-intensity physical activities, skeletal muscle index, and muscle strength increased, while sedentary time, BMI, and the waist circumference of participants decreased in the experimental group, with significant group-by-time interactions compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS A wearable activity tracker with gradual goal-setting is an efficient approach to improve older adults' physical activity and sarcopenia indicators. Smart wearable products with behavioral change techniques are recommended to prevent sarcopenia in older adult populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, is common among patients with chronic kidney disease, especially those on maintenance hemodialysis. This condition often arises from factors like reduced physical activity and metabolic changes associated with chronic kidney disease. This study aims to assess the prevalence and severity of sarcopenia in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), focusing on probable sarcopenia and its correlations with physical activity, body mass index, and inorganic phosphorus levels. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 220 patients on MHD who visited to West China Hospital of Sichuan University between February and April 2023. The demographic data, body measurements, and laboratory results were retrospectively collected. Sarcopenia was assessed using the 2019 criteria from the Asian Working Group and the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People, and physical activity was measured via the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. RESULTS Of the study participants, 141 (64.1%) were diagnosed with probable [110 (50.0%) or confirmed sarcopenia [31 (14.1%)], including 22 (10%) with severe sarcopenia. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire score, OR = 0.998, 95% CI: 0.998-0.999, P < 0.001), body mass index (OR = 0.868, 95% CI: 0.788-0.957, P = 0.004), and inorganic phosphorus levels (OR = 0.513, 95% CI: 0.270-0.975, P = 0.042) independently influenced the likelihood of sarcopenia. Within the sarcopenic group, physical activity and BMI significantly correlated with the condition's severity. CONCLUSION The prevalence of probable or confirmed sarcopenia in patients on MHD is significant. Factors such as physical activity, body mass index, and inorganic phosphorus levels are independently associated the presence and severity of sarcopenia in this population. Abstract
The prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing (PHD or EGL9-homologs) enzyme family is mainly known for its role in the cellular response to hypoxia. HIF-PH inhibitors can stabilize hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), activating transcriptional programs that promote processes such as angiogenesis and erythropoiesis to adapt to changes in oxygen levels. HIF-PH inhibitors have been clinically approved for treating several types of anaemia. While most discussions of the HIF-PH signalling axis focus on hypoxia, there is a growing recognition of its importance under normoxic conditions. Recent advances in PHD biology have highlighted the potential of targeting this pathway therapeutically for a range of aging-related diseases. In this article, we review these recent discoveries, situate them within the broader context of aging and disease, and explore current therapeutic strategies that target PHD enzymes for these indications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Psoas muscle parameters estimated from computed tomography images, as surrogates for sarcopenia, have been found to be associated with post-interventional outcomes after a wide range of cardiovascular procedures. The pre-interventional assessment in patients undergoing invasive treatment for peripheral arterial disease is increasingly often carried out with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and we therefore sought to investigate the predictive potential of MRI-derived psoas muscle area in this cohort. METHODS A total of 899 patients with available sufficient quality pre-interventional MRI conducted within 6 months prior to treatment undergoing open, endovascular, or hybrid revascularization procedures for claudication and/or limb-threatening ischemia at Tampere University hospital between 2010 and 2020 were retrospectively studied in this single-center cohort study. The follow-up lasted until 17 June 2021. Psoas muscle areas were measured from the magnetic resonance images at the L4 level, and the reliability of muscle parameter measurements was tested with intraclass correlation coefficient analysis. The average psoas muscle area values (mean of left and right psoas surface areas) were z-scored and analyzed separately for men and women. RESULTS The median follow-up time was 5.9 years (interquartile range (IQR) = 2.7-7.8), and the overall mortality count was 259 (28.8%) (29.5% n = 168/569 for men and 27.6% n = 91/330 for women). The intraclass correlation coefficient analysis showed excellent interrater reliability for psoas muscle measurements. The muscle surface areas were larger in men (mean = 7.58 cm2) compared to women (mean = 5.27 cm2) (p < 0.001). Higher psoas muscle area was associated with better survival in women (p = 0.003, hazard ratio (HR) = 0.71, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.6-0.9 per 1 SD), whereas in men, an independent association of the muscle parameter with mortality was not found. CONCLUSIONS MRI-derived psoas muscle area may be a prognostic factor for clinical use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The global aging population has led to increased noncommunicable diseases, often linked to poor diet and declining muscle strength and mass. This study assessed leucine intake and sarcopenia indicators among 181 adults aged 60-80 in Santiago, Chile, participating in the Program for Complementary Food in Older People (PACAM), with 80% being women. METHODS Sarcopenia was evaluated through muscle strength and mass using the EWGSOP2 criteria for its identification. RESULTS 78.45% of participants did not meet the recommended leucine intake of 3 g per day and sarcopenia was identified in 17.13% of them. The skeletal muscle index was 48.07%, and hand grip strength was 26.52%, with men showing significantly higher grip strength (48.60% vs. 28.80%, p = 0.00). Inadequate leucine intake was more common in those aged 60-75 (85.9%) than those over 75 (p = 0.03). No significant differences in BMI, grip strength, or muscle mass were found between those with adequate and inadequate leucine intake, and PACAM food consumption did not significantly affect these parameters. A sub-analysis showed significant differences in grip strength among powdered dairy drink consumers (35.20% vs. 17.80%, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Chilean elderly participating in PACAM present a high prevalence of sarcopenia and leucine deficiency among with no notable benefits from PACAM foods intake. Despite the limitations of the local body composition assessment method, this research addresses a critical public health issue in Chile. Future studies should evaluate physical performance and focus on leucine supplementation to clarify its effects on sarcopenia.

Abstract
The prevalence of sarcopenia depends on the diagnostic criteria and updates used. There are few studies investigating the relationship between the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) criteria and risk factors in active community-dwelling older adults. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 533 community-dwelling active older adults were assessed. 3.75 % were diagnosed with confirmed sarcopenia and 15.86 % with probable sarcopenia. The risk of sarcopenia was found to increase with age, taking more than four tablets a day and having a low level of education. There is a possible association between smoking and living alone. In contrast, active older adults had a lower prevalence of sarcopenia compared to the European and global populations, suggesting a protective effect of physical activity adherence against sarcopenia. Further studies in this population are needed to increase the sample size and to better understand the development and factors associated with sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia or skeletal muscle depletion is a poor prognostic factor for gastric cancer (GC). However, existing cutoff values of skeletal muscle index (SMI) for defining sarcopenia have been found to have limitations when clinically applied. This study aimed to determine the optimal cutoff for SMI to predict severe toxicities of chemotherapy and overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced GC. METHODS Patients with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma who received first-line palliative chemotherapy between January 2014 and December 2021 at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, were included in this study. The SMI was determined via a pre-chemotherapy computed tomography scan. Optimal cutoff points of SMI were identified by recursive partitioning analysis. Univariate and multivariate analyses evaluating risk factors of severe chemotherapy toxicities and OS were also performed. RESULTS A total of 158 patients (male: 108 (68.4%), median age: 65.3) were included. The SMI cutoff to define low SMI was ≤33 cm2/m2 for males and ≤28 cm2/m2 for females; 30 patients (19.0%) had low SMI. Patients with low SMI had a higher incidence of hematological toxicities (63.3% vs 32.0%, P = .001) and non-hematological toxicities (66.7% vs 36.7%, P = .003). Multivariable analysis indicated that low SMI and low serum albumin (≤28 g/L) were independent predictive factors of hematological toxicity, while low SMI and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio ≥5 were predictive factors of non-hematological toxicity. Moreover, patients with low SMI had a significantly shorter OS (P = .011), lower response rate to chemotherapy (P = .045), and lower utilization of subsequent lines of treatment (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Using pre-chemotherapy SMI cutoff (≤33 cm2/m2 for males and 28 cm2/m2 for females) one can identify individuals with a higher risk of severe chemotherapy toxicities and worse prognosis.

Abstract
Background Household solid fuel use is common in global households and has been linked to changes in handgrip strength and muscle mass. However, whether household solid fuel use results in sarcopenia over time is not well elaborated. Methods This study employed data from the 2011-2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) that recruited 4,932 participants ≥45 years. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was conducted to estimate the impact of household solid fuel use for cooking and heating on sarcopenia development. The analysis was further stratified based on geographic position. Mediation analysis was employed to estimate the potential mediating effects of cognitive function and depressive symptoms associated with household solid fuel use and sarcopenia. Results Over the 4-year follow-up, 476 cases of sarcopenia were reported (9.65%), with 254 in males (10.82%) and 222 in females (8.59%). Cooking and heating with solid fuels increased the risk of sarcopenia (Cooking: HR 1.401, 95% CI 1.138-1.724; Heating: HR 1.278, 95% CI 1.040-1.571). Crop residue/wood burning correlated with higher sarcopenia risk (Cooking: 1.420, 95% CI 1.147-1.758; Heating: 1.318, 95% CI 1.062-1.635). Switching to clean cooking fuels significantly reduced sarcopenia risk (HR 0.766, 95% CI 0.599-0.979). Heating with solid fuels was associated with higher sarcopenia risk only in southern China (HR 1.375, 95% CI 1.102-1.715). Additionally, cognitive function and depressive symptoms partially mediated the link between household solid fuel use and sarcopenia. Conclusion Household use of solid fuels is associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia. Restricting the use of solid fuels and focusing on cognitive function and depressive symptoms in solid fuel users can help decrease sarcopenia development.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is characterized by a decline in muscle strength, generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, and impaired physical performance, which are common outcomes used to screen, diagnose, and determine severity of sarcopenia in older adults. These outcomes are associated with poor quality of life, increased risk of falls, hospitalization, and mortality in this population. The development of sarcopenia is underpinned by aging, but other factors can lead to sarcopenia, such as chronic diseases, physical inactivity, inadequate dietary energy intake, and reduced protein intake (nutrition-related sarcopenia), leading to an imbalance between muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein breakdown. Protein digestion and absorption are also modified with age, as well as the reduced capacity of metabolizing protein, hindering older adults from achieving ideal protein consumption (i.e., 1-1.5 g/kg/day). Nutritional supplement strategies, like animal (i.e., whey protein) and plant-based protein, leucine, and creatine have been shown to play a significant role in improving outcomes related to sarcopenia. However, the impact of other supplements (e.g., branched-chain amino acids, isolated amino acids, and omega-3) on sarcopenia and related outcomes remain unclear. This narrative review will discuss the evidence of the impact of these nutritional strategies on sarcopenia outcomes in older adults.

Abstract
The role of alcohol consumption as a mediator in the risk between sarcopenia and dementia remains inadequately studied. There is currently limited research on whether the association between sarcopenia and the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is influenced by genetic susceptibility. Our study incorporated a total of 483,637 baseline non-dementia participants, who were classified into groups of individuals with no sarcopenia and those with probable sarcopenia based on the definition. We employed Cox proportional hazards models to evaluate the association between probable sarcopenia and the risk of all cause dementia (ACD), AD, and vascular dementia (VD). We conducted mediation analysis to explore the role of alcohol consumption in the association between probable sarcopenia and the risk of ACD, AD, and VD. During the median follow-up period of 13.6 years, we documented 9000 new cases of ACD (including 4061 AD and 2025 VD). Fully adjusted multivariate model revealed a significant correlation between probable sarcopenia and elevated risk for ACD (HR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.46-1.62, p < 0.001), AD (HR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.21-1.43, p < 0.001), and VD (HR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.52-1.89, p < 0.001). Mediation analysis elucidates that alcohol consumption explained 12.8%, 15.2%, and 11.1% of the associations of probable sarcopenia with the risk of ACD, AD, and VD, respectively. An interactive relationship prevails between probable sarcopenia and genetic factors (p for interaction <0.001), and regardless of the degree of genetic risk, probable sarcopenia correlates with an elevated AD risk. Our study reveals a significant association between probable sarcopenia and an increased risk of dementia, with alcohol consumption playing a mediating role in this association. There is an interaction between probable sarcopenia and genetic susceptibility related to the risk of AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is associated with impairments in muscle mass and quality increasing the risk of sarcopenia. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the odds of sarcopenia and its associated risk factors among Qatari adults (> 18 years), while exploring the modulating effects of health and lifestyle factors. METHODS Using a case-control design, data from 767 participants (481 cases with diabetes and 286 controls without diabetes) was collected from Qatar Biobank (QBB). Sociodemographic, lifestyle factors including dietary intake, anthropometric and biochemical measures were analyzed. Handgrip strength, Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and Bio-impedance were used to assess muscle strength, muscle mass and muscle quality, respectively. The risk of sarcopenia was estimated using the European consensus on definition and diagnosis of sarcopenia. RESULTS Cases with diabetes were older (55 vs. 36 years; P < 0.001), had higher BMI (31.6 vs. 28.3 kg/m2; P < 0.001), lower cardiorespiratory fitness (50.0% "Moderate" fitness for cases, 62.9% "High" fitness for controls), and consumed less total (59.0 vs. 64.0; P = 0.004) and animal protein (39.0 vs. 42.0; P = 0.001), compared to controls based on a computed score. Participants with diabetes also had lower appendicular lean mass/BMI, handgrip strength, and higher probability of sarcopenia/probable sarcopenia (P < 0.005). Adjusted multiple logistic regression revealed that elevated cardiorespiratory fitness (β = 0.299, 95%CI:0.12-0.74) and blood triglycerides (β = 1.475, 95% CI: 1.024-2.124), as well as being a female (β = 0.086, 95%CI: 0.026-0.288) and having higher BMI (β = 0.908, 95%CI: 0.852-0.967) and ALM/BMI (β = 0.000, 95% CI: 0.000-0.007) are independent predictors (p < 0.05) of sarcopenia risk. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the intricate relationship between diabetes and sarcopenia, revealing modifiable risk factors. Individuals with diabetes were found to have a higher likelihood of sarcopenia, which was associated with lower fitness levels and higher blood triglycerides. Protective factors against sarcopenia included being female and having higher BMI and ALM/BMI ratios.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia, characterized by muscle mass decline due to aging or other causes, is exacerbated by decreased estrogen levels after menopause in women. Isoflavones, a class of flavonoids acting on estrogen receptors, may have beneficial effects on metabolic disorders. We examined these effects in ovariectomized mice fed a high-fat, high-sucrose diet (HFHSD). METHODS At 7 weeks old, female C57BL6/J mice (18-20 g, n = 12) underwent bilateral ovariectomy (OVX), and were then fed a high-fat, high-sucrose diet starting at 8 weeks of age. Half of the mice received isoflavone water (0.1%). Metabolic analyses, including glucose and insulin tolerance tests, were conducted. Muscle analysis involved grip strength assays, next-generation sequencing, quantitative RT-PCR, and western blotting of skeletal muscle after euthanizing the mice at 14 weeks old. Additionally, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of the gut microbiota was performed. RESULTS The results demonstrated that isoflavone administration did not affect body weight, glucose tolerance, or lipid metabolism. In contrast, isoflavone-treated mice had higher grip strength. Gene expression analysis of the soleus muscle revealed decreased Trim63 expression, and western blotting showed inactivation of muscle-specific RING finger protein 1 in isoflavone-treated mice. Gut microbiota analysis indicated higher Bacteroidetes and lower Firmicutes abundance in the isoflavone group, along with increased microbiota diversity. Gene sets related to TNF-α signaling via NF-κB and unfolded protein response were negatively associated with isoflavones. CONCLUSIONS Isoflavone intake alters gut microbiota and increases muscle strength, suggesting a potential role in improving sarcopenia in menopausal women.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is the accelerated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function commonly, but not exclusively, associated with advancing age. It is observed across many species including humans in whom it can lead to decline in physical function and mobility as well as to increased risk of adverse outcomes including falls, fractures and premature mortality. Although prevalence estimates vary because sarcopenia has been defined in different ways, even using a conservative approach, the prevalence is between 5% and 10% in the general population. A life course framework has been proposed for understanding not only the occurrence of sarcopenia in later life but also influences operating at earlier life stages with potentially important implications for preventive strategies. Harnessing progress in understanding the hallmarks of ageing has been key to understanding sarcopenia pathophysiology. Considerable convergence in approaches to diagnosis of sarcopenia has occurred over the last 10 years, with a growing emphasis on the central importance of muscle strength. Resistance exercise is currently the mainstay of treatment; however, it is not suitable for all. Hence, adjunctive and alternative treatments to improve quality of life are needed. An internationally agreed approach to definition and diagnosis will enable a step change in the field and is likely to be available in the near future through the Global Leadership Initiative in Sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of sarcopenia and frailty syndrome with dietary patterns is not yet well recognized. THE AIM The aim of the study was to evaluate the association among dietary patterns, suspected sarcopenia, and frailty syndrome among older people in Poland. METHODS The study was conducted in 2022 and 2023 among people aged 55 and older. The sample was chosen arbitrarily. The following questionnaires were used in the study: the KomPAN (assessment of frequency of food intake and sociodemographic characteristics), the SARC-F (assessment of risk of sarcopenia), and the EFS (diagnosis of frailty syndrome). To confirm the suspicion of sarcopenia, muscle strength was assessed using the HGS and FTSST, and physical fitness was assessed using the GST. Based on the frequency of food consumption, 11 DPs (factors) were selected using PCA analysis. SARC-F, HGS, FTSST, and GST results were used to identify homogeneous groups (clusters) using cluster analysis, a k-means method. RESULTS Two clusters were identified: cluster 1 (the non-sarcopenic cluster, or nSC) and cluster 2 (the sarcopenic cluster, or SC). Associations between variables were assessed using logistic regression. Suspected sarcopenia was found in 32.0% of respondents, more in men than women, and more among those either over 75 or 65 and under. EFS results showed that the risk (22.1%) or presence of frailty syndrome (23.8%) was more common in men than women and more common in those aged 75 and older than in other age groups. Male gender; older age; and unfavorable dietary patterns, i.e., consumption of white bread and bakery products, white rice and pasta, butter, and potatoes (factor 1) and cheese, cured meat, smoked sausages, and hot dogs (factor 9), increased the likelihood of sarcopenia and frailty syndrome, while the pattern associated with fruit and water consumption (factor 7) had the opposite effect. CONCLUSIONS Confirmation of the importance of dietary patterns in the etiology and pathogenesis of sarcopenia and frailty syndrome should be documented in prospective cohort studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnostic criteria for respiratory sarcopenia have been recently reported. However, no studies have clarified the characteristics of skeletal muscle impairment of the limbs in subjects with respiratory sarcopenia. This study aimed to explore the factors, including skeletal muscle, associated with probable respiratory sarcopenia in elderly subjects. METHODS Subjects were classified into the probable respiratory sarcopenia group and nonrespiratory sarcopenia group. Probable respiratory sarcopenia was defined as the concurrent presence of respiratory muscle weakness (as less than the predicted value calculated from age, sex, and height) and low skeletal muscle mass (<7.0 kg/m2 in males and 5.7 kg/m2 in females). The following factors were measured: respiratory muscle strength, skeletal muscle mass index, muscle thickness and echo intensity of the rectus femoris, extracellular-to-intracellular water ratio, hand grip strength, 5 sit-to-stand, knee extension strength, bone mineral density, age, sex, body mass index, degree of frailty, presence or absence of medical history, presence or absence of habitual exercise, period of time since the start of exercise, and number of hours of exercise at a time. The association subjects with probable respiratory sarcopenia were analyzed using hierarchical logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Twenty-six with probable respiratory sarcopenia and 54 with nonrespiratory sarcopenia were included. Hierarchical logistic regression analysis revealed that echo intensity was a significant predictor of probable respiratory sarcopenia. The odds ratio for echo intensity was 2.54 (95% confidence interval: 1.04-6.23). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that a decrease in muscle quality in the lower extremity is associated with probable respiratory sarcopenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop and validate a predictive model for sarcopenia. METHODS A total of 240 subjects who visited our hospital between August 2021 and May 2023 were randomly divided by time of entry into a training set containing 2/3 of patients and a validation set containing 1/3 of patients. The muscle thickness (MT), echo intensity (EI), and shear wave velocity (SWV) of the medial gastrocnemius muscle were measured. Indicators that were meaningful in the univariate analysis in the training set were included in a binary logistic regression to derive a regression model, and the model was evaluated using a consistency index, calibration plot, and clinical validity curve. Diagnostic efficacy and clinical applicability were compared between the model and unifactorial indicators. RESULTS Four meaningful variables, age, body mass index (BMI), MT, and SWV, were screened into the predictive model. The model was Logit Y = 21.292 + 0.065 × Age - 0.411 × BMI - 0.524 × MT - 3.072 × SWV. The model was well differentiated with an internally validated C-index of 0.924 and an external validation C-index of 0.914. The calibration plot predicted probabilities against actual probabilities showed excellent agreement. The specificity, sensitivity, and Youden's index of the model were 73.80%, 97.40%, and 71.20%, respectively, when using the diagnostic cut-off value of >0.279 for sarcopenia. The logistic model had higher diagnostic efficacy (p < 0.001) and higher net clinical benefit (p < 0.001) over the same threshold range compared to indicators. CONCLUSION The logistic model of sarcopenia has been justified to have good discriminatory, calibrated, and clinical validity, and has higher diagnostic value than indicators.

Abstract
Muscle wasting is a universal hallmark of aging which is displayed by a wide range of organisms, although the causes and mechanisms of this phenomenon are not fully understood. We used Drosophila to characterize the phenomenon of spontaneous muscle fiber degeneration (SMFD) during aging. We found that SMFD occurs across diverse types of somatic muscles, progresses with chronological age, and positively correlates with functional muscle decline. Data from vital dyes and morphological markers imply that degenerative fibers most likely die by necrosis. Mechanistically, SMFD is driven by the damage resulting from muscle contractions, and the nervous system may play a significant role in this process. Our quantitative model of SMFD assessment can be useful in identifying and validating novel genetic factors that influence aging-related muscle wasting.

Abstract
The aging process is associated with the development of a wide range of degenerative disorders in mammals. These diseases are characterized by a progressive decline in function at multiple levels, including the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal. Furthermore, it is responsible for various healthcare costs in developing and developed countries. Sarcopenia is the deterioration in the quality and functionality of muscles, which is extremely concerning as it manages many functions in the human body. This article reviews the molecular crosstalk involved in sarcopenia and the specific roles of many mediator molecules in establishing cross-talk between muscles, bone, and fatty tissues, eventually leading to sarcopenia. Besides, the involvement of various etiological factors, such as neurology, endocrinology, lifestyle, etc., makes it exceedingly difficult for clinicians to develop a coherent hypothesis that may lead to the well-organized management system required to battle this debilitating disease. The several hallmarks contributing to the progression of the disease is a vital question that needs to be addressed to ensure an efficient treatment for sarcopenia patients. Also, the intricate molecular mechanism involved in developing this disease requires more studies. The direct relationship of cellular senescence with aging is one of the pivotal issues contributing to disease pathophysiology. Some patented treatment strategies have been discussed, including drugs undergoing clinical trials and emerging options like miRNA and protein-enclosed extracellular vesicles. A clear understanding of the secretome, including the signaling pathways involved between muscles, bone, and fatty tissues, is extremely beneficial for developing novel therapeutics for curing sarcopenia.

Abstract
This study investigated the ability of a sarcopenia screening test to predict mortality among cancer inpatients. We conducted a prospective study of patients admitted to the oncology ward of a teaching hospital in southern Taiwan. Over a 5-month period, 82 patients were enrolled for evaluation and were followed for 3 years. All participants received a comprehensive assessment at the time of admission, including Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, cognitive ability, nutrition index, body mass index, and short physical performance battery (SPPB). Age, ECOG performance status, dementia, SPPB score, and albumin level were associated with sarcopenia. Of the enrolled participants, 53 (64.6%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. Patients with sarcopenia were associated with worse overall survival (OS) than patients without sarcopenia (28.8% vs. 82%, p = 0.01). Metastasis (hazard ratio [HR]: 5.166; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.358-19.656) and albumin level (HR: 4.346; 95% CI: 1.493-12.654) were independent and significant predictors of OS for the whole study population. Age was a predictor of 2-year all-cause mortality among patients aged ≥65 years but not among those aged <65 years (OS: 25.6% vs. 100%, p = 0.04). To summarize, the sarcopenia screening results were found to predict OS and all-cause mortality and may be helpful for patient stratification during in-hospital care.

Abstract
Many studies support the idea that sarcopenic obesity (SO) could be considered a potential risk factor for negative health outcomes. These results have been inconsistent, and no umbrella reviews exist regarding this topic. Several databases until November 2023 were searched for systematic reviews with meta-analysis of observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control and prospective). For each association, random-effects summary effect sizes with correspondent 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were evaluated using the GRADE tool. Among the 213 papers initially screened, nine systematic reviews with meta-analysis were included, for a total of 384 710 participants. In cross-sectional and case-control studies, 30 different outcomes were analysed, and 18 were statistically significant. In any population addressed in cross-sectional and case-control studies, compared with non-SO, SO increased the prevalence of cognitive impairment (k = 3; odds ratio [OR] = 3.46; 95% CI: 2.24-5.32; high certainty of evidence), coronary artery disease (k = 2; OR = 2.48; 95% CI: 1.85-3.31) and dyslipidaemia (k = 3; OR = 2.50; 95% CI: 1.51-4.15). When compared with sarcopenia or obesity, the results were conflicting. In prospective studies, the association between SO-compared with non-SO-and other negative outcomes was supported by low/very low certainty of evidence and limited to a few conditions. Besides, no comparison with sarcopenia or obesity was provided. Finally, only a few studies have considered muscle function/physical performance in the diagnostic workup. SO could be considered a risk factor only for a few conditions, with the literature mainly based on cross-sectional and case-control studies. Future studies with clear definitions of SO are needed for quantifying the importance of SO-particularly when compared with the presence of only sarcopenia or obesity-and the weight of muscle function/physical performance in its definition.

Abstract
To the best of our knowledge, little is known about the association between dietary variety status and sarcopenia in university-affiliated geriatric hospital in elderly. The present study aimed to investigate, in a multidisciplinary setting, the prevalence of sarcopenia and association between dietary variety status and sarcopenia in older outpatients at Juntendo Tokyo Koto Geriatric Medical Center (Tokyo, Japan). Between October 2020 and December 2021, a cross-sectional study of outpatients aged ≥65 years [458 male (44%) and 584 female (56%); mean age, 78.2±6.1 years] was conducted to assess prevalence of sarcopenia, according to Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria, and the relationship between dietary variety status and sarcopenia. Patient profile, comorbidities, drug use, neuropsychological data, abdominal symptoms, pulmonary function and dietary variety status were collected. Of 1,042 subjects, there were 223 (21.4%) with [142 male (63.7%) and 81 female (36.3%); mean age, 80.6±6.3 years] and 819 (78.6%) without sarcopenia [316 male (38.6%) and 503 female (61.4%); mean age, 77.6±5.8]. In multivariate analysis, older age, male sex, low body mass index, high Brinkman Index and phase angle, low quality of life, history of daycare use, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis and low Mini-Mental State Examination and Dietary Variety Score were related to sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia was higher in than in community-dwelling individuals. Dietary variety status was associated with sarcopenia.

Abstract
Resistance training (RT) remains the most effective treatment for age-related declines in muscle mass. However, many older adults experience attenuated muscle hypertrophy in response to RT when compared with younger adults. This may be attributed to underlying molecular processes that are dysregulated by aging and exacerbated by improperly prescribed RT weekly volume, intensity, and/or frequency doses. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key epigenetic regulators that impact signaling pathways and protein expression within cells, are dynamic and responsive to exercise stimuli, and are often dysregulated in diseases. In this study, we used untargeted miRNA-seq to examine miRNA in skeletal muscle and serum-derived exosomes of older adults (n = 18, 11 M/7 F, 66 ± 1 yr) who underwent three times per wk RT for 30 wk [e.g., high intensity three times/wk (HHH, n = 9) or alternating high-low-high (HLH) intensity (n = 9)], after a standardized 4-wk washin. Within each tissue, miRNAs were clustered into modules based on pairwise correlation using weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA). Modules were tested for association with the magnitude of RT-induced thigh lean mass (TLM) change [as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)]. Although no modules were unique to training dose, we identified miRNA modules in skeletal muscle associated with TLM gains irrespective of exercise dose. Using miRNA-target interactions, we analyzed key miRNAs in significant modules for their potential regulatory involvement in biological pathways. Findings point toward potential miRNAs that may be informative biomarkers and could also be evaluated as potential therapeutic targets as an adjuvant to RT to maximize skeletal muscle mass accrual in older adults.NEW & NOTEWORTHY In this work, we identified a set of microRNAs correlated with thigh lean mass gains in a group of older adults. To our knowledge, this is the first time these microRNAs have been identified as novel predictive biomarkers correlating with lean mass gains in aging adults. As biomarkers, these may help interventionalists identify older individuals that are positively responding to an exercise intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing interest surrounds the utility of blood-based biomarkers for diagnosing sarcopenia. C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF), a marker of neuromuscular junction stability, is amongst the most promising candidates; however, a dearth of reference data impedes the incorporation of its use in public health settings. This study aimed to establish reference values for plasma CAF concentrations across adulthood in a large, well-characterized cohort of healthy adults; and comprehensively examine the association between plasma CAF levels and skeletal muscle health. METHODS One thousand people aged between 18 and 87 years took part in this study (mean age = 50.4 years; 51% females). Body composition and muscle strength were examined using DXA and hand dynamometry. Plasma CAF concentrations were measured, in duplicate, using commercially available ELISA kits. Sarcopenia and individual sarcopenia signatures [low skeletal muscle index (SMI) only/low grip strength only] were classified using the EWGSOP2 algorithm. RESULTS Detailed reference CAF values, according to sex and age, are presented. A significant but modest age-related increase in plasma CAF concentration was observed (P = 0.018). Across adulthood, CAF concentrations were negatively associated with grip strength and SMI (both P < 0.001). In people ≥50 years old, CAF concentrations were 22.6% higher in those with sarcopenia (P < 0.001), 11.3% higher in those with low SMI (P = 0.006) and 9.6% higher in those with low grip strength (P = 0.0034), compared with controls. People in the highest CAF concentration quartile, had 3.25 greater odds for sarcopenia (95% CI = 1.41-7.49, P = 0.005), 2.76 greater odds for low SMI (95% CI = 1.24-5.22, P = 0.012), and 2.56 greater odds for low grip strength (95% CI = 1.07-5.57, P = 0.037), compared with those in the lowest quartile. People with a CAF Z-score ≥2 had 9.52 greater odds for sarcopenia (95% CI = 3.01-30.05, P < 0.001) compared with a Z-score <1. Plasma CAF concentration had an acceptable level of diagnostic accuracy for sarcopenia (AUC = 0.772, 95% CI = 0.733-0.807, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The reference values presented herein may guide the clinical interpretation of circulating CAF and help identify people at risk of poor skeletal muscle outcomes for inclusion in therapeutic interventions. Our findings add clarity to existing data, demonstrating a robust relationship between circulating CAF and skeletal muscle integrity in the largest adult cohort to date, and support the use of CAF as an accessible, cost-effective screening tool for sarcopenia. However, further research into the prognostic utility of plasma CAF, and the establishment of normative data from other populations, are urgently needed if routine CAF screening is to be embedded into public healthcare settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to verify the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associations with sociodemographic, clinical and psychological factors in community-dwelling older adults. STUDY DESIGN A randomized cross-sectional study was extracted from a probabilistic cluster conducted on individuals aged 65 years or older residing in the community. METHODS Sarcopenia was defined according to the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2). Body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Associations were analyzed using networks based on mixed graphical models. Predictability indices of the estimated networks were assessed using the proportion of explained variance for numerical variables and the proportion of correct classification for categorical variables. RESULTS The study included 278 participants, with a majority being female (61 %). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 39.57 %. Among those with sarcopenia, 67 % were women and 33 % were men. In the network model, age, race, education, family income, bone mass, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, total cholesterol levels and rheumatism were associated with sarcopenia. The covariates demonstrated a high accuracy (62.9 %) in predicting sarcopenia categories. CONCLUSION The prevalence of sarcopenia was high, especially in women. In addition, network analysis proved useful in visualizing complex relationships between sociodemographic and clinical factors with sarcopenia. The results suggest early screening of sarcopenia for appropriate treatment of this common geriatric syndrome in older adults in Brazil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No study has investigated the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity and sarcopenia so far. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity (d-TAC) and sarcopenia in elderly adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study we enrolled 300 elderly people (150 men and 150 women) aged ≥ 55 years using cluster random sampling method. Sarcopenia was defined based on European Working Group on Sarcopenia (EWGSOP) definition. A DXA scanner, a squeeze bulb dynamometer and a 4-Meter walk gait speed test was used to measure Appendicular Skeletal Muscle (ASM), muscle strength and muscle performance respectively. We also used a Block-format 117-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intakes of participants. Multivariable logistic regression models were applied to examine the association between d-TAC and sarcopenia. RESULTS Mean ± SD age of study participants and their BMI was 66.8 ± 7.72 year and 27.3 ± 4.2 kg/m2, respectively. People in the highest tertile of d-TAC had the greatest hand grip strength (11.9 ± 3.63 vs. 10.4 ± 3.55 psi, p = 0.009) and had lower odds of sarcopenia compared with those in the lowest tertile, either before (OR = 0.39; 95% CI: 0.17, 0.88) or after adjustment for potential confounders (OR = 0.33; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.95). No other significant association was seen between d-TAC and components of sarcopenia. CONCLUSION We found an inverse association between dietary total antioxidant capacity and odds of sarcopenia. No significant association was seen between d-TAC and individual components of sarcopenia. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Background The relationship between the weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) and grip strength, a crucial marker in assessing sarcopenia, lacks clarity. We aimed to explore the relationship between WWI and muscle strength across genders. Methods The cross-sectional study involved adults with complete data on WWI and grip strength from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. WWI was derived by dividing waist circumference by the square root of weight. Weighted multivariable logistic regression and smooth curve fitting techniques were used to examine the independent association and potential non-linear relationship between WWI and grip strength. A two-piecewise linear regression model was utilized to determine the threshold effect. Additionally, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted. Results The study encompassed 9,365 participants, including 4,661 males and 4,704 females. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a negative correlation between WWI and grip strength among males (β = -11.49, 95% CI: -12.38, -10.60, p < 0.001) as well as females (β = -2.53, 95% CI: -2.98, -2.08, p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that the negative correlation of WWI with grip strength remained consistent across various age groups and levels of obesity for both males and females. Conclusion An increase in WWI correlates with reduced muscle strength in both males and females. WWI was negatively associated not only with muscle mass but also with muscle strength. WWI may serve as an assessment tool for sarcopenia, but further large-scale studies are needed to clarify causality.

Abstract
Osteosarcopenic adiposity (OSA) syndrome, the coexistence of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and adiposity (either excess or redistributed/infiltrated), has been studied globally in different populations and regions (mostly in East Asia, less in Europe and North America), resulting in varied prevalence. We aimed to determine the prevalence of OSA in a large population of apparently healthy Caucasian adults (18-90 years) and to compare it with the prevalence reported in other studies and other ethnicities. This study included 9719 participants (6412 women and 3307 men), stratified into four age-group categories, and recruited from the general medical practices in Italy. OSA was defined based on body composition measurements using bioelectrical impedance BIA-ACC®, which enables assessment of total bone mass, muscle/lean, and adipose tissues. The overall prevalence of OSA was 21.9% in women and 14.0% in men, and it significantly increased in every subsequent age group for both women and men (p < 0.001). The OSA prevalence was not significantly different between men and women below 40 years; however, it was considerably higher in women over 40 years. Participants with OSA had a significantly lower BMI compared to those without OSA, indicating OSA is a separate disorder not necessarily related to physiological fluctuations of BMI. The prevalence in Asian populations was lower than in our sample, indicating ethnic specificity. The relatively high prevalence of OSA detected in this study's population across the age groups suggests the necessity for its appropriate and timely identification to prevent possible clinical outcomes, including fracture, dismobility, frailty, or chronic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a marker of insulin resistance, but its role in sarcopenia is controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of the TyG index with sarcopenia. METHODS 4030 participants aged 20 years and above were selected from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for cross sectional study. Weighted logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between TyG index and sarcopenia. Threshold effect analysis and restricted cubic spline were employed to describe nonlinear link, with interaction tests and subgroup analyses performed. RESULTS It was found in the fully adjusted model that the TyG index was positively associated with sarcopenia (per 1-unit increase in the TyG index: OR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.07, 1.60). This association was further highlighted in groups characterized by the absence of MetS or diabetes, as well as the absence of vigorous or moderate work activity. Furthermore, analysis of the curve fitting and threshold effects indicated a nonlinear relationship, which exhibited a turning point at 9.14. CONCLUSION The study results indicated that the TyG index was positively associated with sarcopenia. Enhancing the management of insulin resistance could help reduce the risk of developing sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are slow-growing tumors. Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. First-line NEN therapy is somatostatin analogs, which could be responsible for malabsorption conditions, such as pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (EPI) with underlying sarcopenia. AIM Evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with NENs at diagnosis and during follow-up. METHODS A retrospective single-center study was conducted, including patients with advanced intestinal NENs G1/G2 (excluded pancreatic NENs). CT scans were analyzed at diagnosis and after 6 months of therapy, and the skeletal muscle index was assessed. RESULTS A total of 30 patients (F:M = 6:24) were enrolled, with the following primary tumor sites: 25 in the ileum, 1 stomach, 2 jejunum, and 2 duodenum. At diagnosis, 20 patients (66.6%) showed sarcopenic SMI values, and 10 patients (33.3%) showed non-sarcopenic SMI values. At follow-up, three more patients developed sarcopenic SMI values. Statistical significance in relation to the presence of sarcopenia was found in the group of patients with carcinoid syndrome (p = 0.0178), EPI (p = 0.0018), and weight loss (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION Sarcopenia was present in 2/3 of the patients with advanced intestinal NENs at the diagnosis and during the follow-up. It is reasonable to consider this condition to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Human hallmarks of sarcopenia include muscle weakness and a blunted response to exercise. Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase inhibitors (NNMTis) increase strength and promote the regenerative capacity of aged muscle, thus offering a promising treatment for sarcopenia. Since human hallmarks of sarcopenia are recapitulated in aged (24-month-old) mice, we treated mice from 22 to 24 months of age with NNMTi, intensive exercise, or a combination of both, and compared skeletal muscle adaptations, including grip strength, longitudinal running capacity, plantarflexor peak torque, fatigue, and muscle mass, fiber type, cross-sectional area, and intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) content. Exhaustive proteome and metabolome analyses were completed to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying the measured changes in skeletal muscle pathophysiology. Remarkably, NNMTi-treated aged sedentary mice showed ~ 40% greater grip strength than sedentary controls, while aged exercised mice only showed a 20% increase relative to controls. Importantly, the grip strength improvements resulting from NNMTi treatment and exercise were additive, with NNMTi-treated exercised mice developing a 60% increase in grip strength relative to sedentary controls. NNMTi treatment also promoted quantifiable improvements in IMCL content and, in combination with exercise, significantly increased gastrocnemius fiber CSA. Detailed skeletal muscle proteome and metabolome analyses revealed unique molecular mechanisms associated with NNMTi treatment and distinct molecular mechanisms and cellular processes arising from a combination of NNMTi and exercise relative to those given a single intervention. These studies suggest that NNMTi-based drugs, either alone or combined with exercise, will be beneficial in treating sarcopenia and a wide range of age-related myopathies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle disease manifesting as low muscle mass and impaired muscle function. It has been reported that sarcopenia correlates with a low quality of life (QOL) and an increased risk of falls in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the prevalence, impact, and screening methods of sarcopenia in Japanese patients with PD. METHODS Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus. We compared demographic characteristics, severity of PD, levodopa equivalent daily dose, QOL, fatigue, impulsive and compulsive behaviors, body mass index (BMI), calf circumference, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), handgrip strength, a 4-meter gait speed, a five-time sit-to-stand test (FTSST), short physical performance battery, and SARC-F questionnaire scores between sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups. Furthermore, to investigate the best tool for screening sarcopenia in PD, the sensitivity and specificity of calf circumference, handgrip strength, FTSST, and SARC-F questionnaire were compared. RESULTS The prevalence of sarcopenia in PD was 31.9% (15/47). The sarcopenia group showed significantly higher age (77.3 ± 5.12 versus 70.3 ± 8.17, p = 0.0042), lower BMI (19.3 ± 2.99 versus 23.3 ± 3.18, p = 0.0002), higher rate of decreased calf circumference (86.6% versus 34.3%, p = 0.0013) and SMI (100% versus 6.25%, p < 0.0001), and worse FTSST (15.5 ± 5.57 versus 12.0 ± 4.12, p = 0.0219). The other parameters were not significantly different. Among screening tools, calf circumference had the highest sensitivity (86%) and specificity (65%). All screening tools had higher sensitivity and specificity in men than in women. The SARC-F questionnaire was not useful in distinguishing sarcopenia but was significantly correlated with the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part 3 (r = 0.41, p = 0.0037) and the 39-item Parkinson's Disease QOL Scale (r = 0.71, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION This study investigated the characteristics of PD patients with sarcopenia in Japan. Calf circumference was found to be the most useful tool for screening sarcopenia in PD. Handgrip strength and FTSST also showed high sensitivities, particularly in men. Conversely, the SARC-F questionnaire is not suitable for diagnosing sarcopenia in PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Handgrip strength (HGS) testing is a highly recommended method for screening for sarcopenia in older adults. However, there is no consensus on the optimal protocol and number of trials for screening sarcopenia in older adults with cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE To investigate the use of the first trial (FT), the mean of three trials (MT), and the highest value (HT) from three trials of the HGS test to screen for sarcopenia in older adults with cognitive impairment. Additionally, to analyze the consistency, agreement, and measurement error in the diagnosis of muscle weakness. METHODS 176 older adults with cognitive impairment were evaluated. The HGS test was repeated three times. Analyses were performed using the Friedman repeated measures test with Wilcoxon post-hoc, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Standard Error of Measurement (SEM), Minimal Detectable Change (MDC95), and Kappa index tests. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the first trial (FT) and the mean of three trials (MT) (d = 0.17 [95 % CI: -0.08, 0.42]), but both differed significantly from the highest value (HT) (p < 0.001). The ICC indicated a reliability of 0.97 (95 % CI: 0.95, 0.98) across all participants, while the kappa index demonstrated over 80 % agreement. The SEM for the first measure of HGS ranged from 0.59 to 2.12 kgf. The MDC95 ranged from 1.64 to 5.87 kgf. CONCLUSION For HGS testing, there was excellent consistency between the FM and MT. All three testing methods demonstrated excellent agreement in diagnosing muscle weakness. The measurement errors confirm that FT can be reliably used to monitor changes during rehabilitation.

Abstract
This article aims to analyze the prevalence of sarcopenia among the elderly in Guizhou Province, China, and its association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This cross-sectional study included 377 patients aged 60 and above in Guiyang Public Health Treatment Center from December 2022 to October 2023, including 231 patients in the community clinic and 146 HIV-infected individuals. According to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 Consensus to diagnose sarcopenia. Logistic regression was used to explore association between sarcopenia and HIV, and stratified by sex and age group. The prevalence of sarcopenia in the non-HIV infection elderly in Guizhou Province was 7.8% (21.3% in males and 5.5% in females), and the prevalence of sarcopenia in HIV-infected individuals was 29.5% (33.3% in males and 13.2% in females), with a statistically significant difference between HIV groups (χ2 = 30.946, P < .001). After control of gender, age, body mass index, body fat percentage, hypertension, diabetes, taking statins, smoking status, medium to high-intensity physical activity, whether childhood poverty, and parents died young, HIV infection was significantly associated with sarcopenia in the elderly (odds ratio = 4.635, 95% confidence interval = 1.920-11.188, P = .001). The results of stratified regression were similar to the main results. The prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly population in China was severe. HIV infection was a risk factor for sarcopenia. It is urgent to establish a prevention and treatment system for sarcopenia in the elderly population, especially for elderly HIV-infected male.

Abstract
Ageing is associated with widespread physiological changes prominent within all tissues, including skeletal muscle and the brain, which lead to a decline in physical function. To tackle the growing health and economic burdens associated with an ageing population, the concept of healthy ageing has become a major research priority. Changes in skeletal muscle mitochondrial characteristics have been suggested to make an important contribution to the reductions in skeletal muscle function with age, and age-related changes in mitochondrial content, respiratory function, morphology, and mitochondrial DNA have previously been reported. However, not all studies report changes in mitochondrial characteristics with ageing, and there is increasing evidence to suggest that physical activity (or inactivity) throughout life is a confounding factor when interpreting age-associated changes. Given that physical activity is a potent stimulus for inducing beneficial adaptations to mitochondrial characteristics, delineating the influence of physical activity on the changes in skeletal muscle that occur with age is complicated. This review aims to summarise our current understanding and knowledge gaps regarding age-related changes to mitochondrial characteristics within skeletal muscle, as well as to provide some novel insights into brain mitochondria, and to propose avenues of future research and targeted interventions. Furthermore, where possible, we incorporate discussions of the modifying effects of physical activity, exercise, and training status, to purported age-related changes in mitochondrial characteristics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia among older Thai adults residing in Bangkok and identify associated risk factors. METHODS This cross-sectional study included Thai adults aged ≥60 years. All participants underwent assessments using the Yubi-wakka test, anthropometric measurements, bioelectrical impedance analysis, handgrip strength tests, and physical performance evaluations. Information on demographic characteristics, chronic health conditions, nutritional status, and medication use was also collected. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. Statistical analyses were performed using the independent t-test, Chi-square test, and logistic regression to identify risk factors. RESULTS Among the 600 participants, the overall prevalence of sarcopenia was 19%. The multivariate analysis identified 13 significant risk factors associated with sarcopenia, including age ≥75 years (odds ratio [OR]=10.6, 95% confidence interval [CI]=3.7-30.2), higher education level (year) (OR=0.85, 95% CI=0.74-0.98), lower income level (OR=5.4, 95% CI=1.4-21.4), Barthel index <90 (OR=11.0, 95% CI=3.5-34.5), lower body mass index (OR=0.7, 95% CI=0.6-0.8), low calf circumference (OR=7.6, 95% CI=2.5-23.3), fall in the past year (OR, 3.1; 95% CI, 1.4-6.6), frailty (OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.1-4.5), malnutrition (OR=3.5, 95% CI=1.3-9.3), history of stroke (OR=7.5, 95% CI=1.3-41.4), vitamin D deficiency (OR=9.4, 95% CI=1.1-82.5), knee osteoarthritis (OR=6.3, 95% CI=1.57-25.31), and malignancy (OR=4.8, 95% CI=1.01-22.70). CONCLUSION This study evaluated the sarcopenia status across a diverse demographic of older Thai adults using comprehensive assessments, and examined the impact of socioeconomic factors and various chronic conditions on the occurrence of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Sarcopenia screening tools have a low capacity to predict adverse outcomes that are consequences of sarcopenia in the elderly population. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of a new sarcopenia screening tool SARC-GLOBAL to predict negative clinical outcomes in the elderly. A total of 395 individuals were evaluated in a 42-month period. The screening tools SARC-GLOBAL, SARC-F, and SARC-CalF and the diagnosis of sarcopenia according to European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older Persons (EWGSOP2) were performed at the beginning of the study. Logistic and Poisson regression models were applied to assess the predictive value of the tools for the odds and risks of negative clinical outcomes, respectively. The most common negative clinical outcome in the followed population was falls (12.9%), followed by infections (12.4%), hospitalizations (11.8%), fractures (4.3%), and deaths (2.7%). Both SARC-GLOBAL and SARC-F were similar in predicting the odds of falls and hospitalizations during the follow up period, however SARC-CalF only predicted the odds of hospitalizations at 42 months.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A nationwide, prospective, multicenter, cohort study (the Disease-Related caloric-protein malnutrition EChOgraphy (DRECO) study) was designed to assess the usefulness of ultrasound of the rectus femoris for detecting sarcopenia in hospitalized patients at risk of malnutrition and to define cut-off values of ultrasound measures. METHODS Patients at risk of malnutrition according to the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) underwent handgrip dynamometry, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and rectus femoris ultrasound studies. European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) criteria were used to define categories of sarcopenia (at risk, probable, confirmed, severe). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) analyses were used to determine the optimal diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of cut-off points of the ultrasound measures for the detection of risk of sarcopenia and probable, confirmed, and severe sarcopenia. RESULTS A total of 1000 subjects were included and 991 of them (58.9% men, mean age 58.5 years) were evaluated. Risk of sarcopenia was detected in 9.6% patients, probable sarcopenia in 14%, confirmed sarcopenia in 9.7%, and severe sarcopenia in 3.9%, with significant differences in the distribution of groups between men and women (p < 0.0001). The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the rectus femoris showed a significantly positive correlation with body cell mass of BIA and handgrip strength, and a significant negative correlation with TUG. Cut-off values were similar within each category of sarcopenia, ranging between 2.40 cm2 and 3.66 cm2 for CSA, 32.57 mm and 40.21 mm for the X-axis, and 7.85 mm and 10.4 mm for the Y-axis. In general, these cut-off values showed high sensitivities, particularly for the categories of confirmed and severe sarcopenia, with male patients also showing better sensitivities than women. CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenia in hospitalized patients at risk of malnutrition was high. Cut-off values for the better sensitivities and specificities of ultrasound measures of the rectus femoris are established. The use of ultrasound of the rectus femoris could be used for the prediction of sarcopenia and be useful to integrate nutritional study into real clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging has been associated with a progressive loss of skeletal muscle quality, quantity and strength, which may result in a condition known as sarcopenia, leading to a decline in physical performance, loss of independence and reduced quality of life. While the cause of impaired physical functioning observed in elderly populations appears to be multifactorial, recent evidence suggests that age-associated alterations in gut microbiota could be a contributing factor. The primary objective will be to assess the effects of a dietary synbiotic formulation on sarcopenia-related functional outcomes such as handgrip strength, gait speed and physical performance within older individuals living independently. The secondary objective will be to examine associations between changes in gut microbiota composition, functional performance and lean muscle mass. METHODS Seventy-four elderly (60-85 years) participants will be randomized in a double-blind, placebo-controlled fashion to either an intervention or control group. The intervention group (n = 37) will receive oral synbiotic formulation daily for 16 weeks. The control group (n = 37) will receive placebo. Assessments of physical performance (including Short Physical Performance Battery, handgrip strength and timed up-and-go tests) and muscle ultrasonography will be performed at 4 time points (baseline and weeks 8, 16 and 20). Likewise, body composition via bioelectric impedance analysis and blood and stool samples will be collected at each time point. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry will be performed at baseline and week 16. The primary outcomes will be between-group changes in physical performance from baseline to 16 weeks. Secondary outcomes include changes in body composition, muscle mass and architecture, fecal microbiota composition and diversity, and fecal and plasma metabolomics. DISCUSSION Gut-modulating supplements appear to be effective in modifying gut microbiota composition in healthy older adults. However, it is unclear whether these changes translate into functional and/or health improvements. In the present study, we will investigate the effects of a synbiotic formulation on measures of physical performance, strength and muscle health in healthy older populations. TRIAL REGISTRATION This study was prospectively registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12622000652774) in May 2022.

Abstract
Muscle weakness has been associated to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in the general population. However, it is still unclear whether this association is maintained in older adults. This study investigated correlations between low handgrip strength (HGS) and metabolic syndrome, or some of its components, in older adults through a systematic review of the literature. Searches were conducted in the Virtual Health Library Regional Portal, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase, MEDLINE/ PubMed, SciELO, and Web of Science databases for relevant studiesinvestigating muscle weakness (measured by hand dynamometer) and metabolic syndrome or its components in older adult populations, published up to September 2023. From the 2050 references initially identified, 20 studies, comprising a total of 31,264 older adults of both genders, completely met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Eighteen studies showed that lower HGS was associated with metabolic syndrome or some of its risk factors, such as abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, or high blood pressure. Two studies found that older men with high blood pressure had increased HGS. Most studies included in this systematic review revealed a significant correlation between reduced HGS and metabolic syndrome or some of its components, especially abdominal obesity and insulin resistance. We conclude that below-average HGS can be associated with metabolic syndrome in older adults.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of three sarcopenia definitions and their associations with fracture risk in older Swedish women when adjusted for fracture risk assessment (FRAX)-based risk factors; 2,883 women with a mean age of 77.8 years were included. Sarcopenia was defined based on the Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC; low handgrip strength [kg] and gait speed (m/s)), revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2; low appendicular lean mass index, appendicular lean mass [ALM]/height; kg/m2], and hand grip strength [kg]), and Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS; low ALM (kg), and hand grip strength [kg]) definitions. Femoral neck T-score was obtained from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. All fractures, confirmed by X-ray or medical record review, were subsequently categorized as major osteoporotic fractures (MOFs) and hip fractures. Deaths were verified through regional registers. The total follow-up time was 6.4 ± 1.3 (mean ± SD) yr. Cox regression (hazard ratios [HR] and 95% CIs) analyses were performed with adjustment for age, FRAX variables, and femoral neck T-score. Sarcopenia prevalence was 4.5% (n = 129) according to SDOC, 12.5% (n = 360) for EWGSOP2, and 10.3% (n = 296) defined by AWGS. Individuals with sarcopenia defined by SDOC had a higher mortality risk than individuals without sarcopenia (HR: 3.41; 95% CI: 2.51, 4.62) after adjusting for age and FRAX variables. Sarcopenia according to EWGSOP2 and AWGS was not associated with an increased fracture risk after adjusting for age and FRAX variables. Individuals with sarcopenia defined by SDOC had a higher risk for any fractures (HR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.10, 1.99) and MOF (HR: 1.42; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.98) compared with individuals without sarcopenia after adjusting for clinical risk factors used in FRAX. In conclusion, sarcopenia defined by SDOC, incorporating muscle function/strength, was the only sarcopenia definition associated with fracture risk in older women.

Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia is defined as a loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical function associated with aging. It is due to a combination of genetic, environmental, and physiological factors. It is also associated with an increased risk of health problems. Since there are many different researchers in the field, with their own algorithms and cut-off points, there is no single criterion for diagnosis. This review aims to compare the prevalence of sarcopenia according to these different diagnostic criteria in older adult populations by age group and sex. Methods: Different databases were searched: Web of Science, Pubmed, Dialnet, Scopus, and Cochrane. The keywords used were "sarcopenia", "diagnosis", "prevalence", "assessment", "aged", "aging" and "older". Studies conducted in a population aged ≥65 assessing the prevalence of sarcopenia were selected. Results: Nineteen articles met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 33,515 subjects, 38.08% female and 61.42% male, at a mean age of 74.52. The diagnostic algorithms used were 52.63% AWGS2, 21.05% EWGSOP2, 10.53% AWGS1 and EWGS1, and 5.26% FNIH. Prevalence ranged from 1.7% to 37.47%, but was higher in males and increased with age. Conclusions: The prevalence of sarcopenia varies depending on the diagnostic algorithm used, but it increases with age and is higher in men. The EWGSOP2 and AWGS2 are the most used diagnostic criteria and measure the same variables but have different cut-off points. Of these two diagnostic algorithms, the one with the highest prevalence of sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia is the AWGS2. These differences may be due to the use of different tools and cut-off points. Therefore, a universal diagnostic criterion should be developed to allow early diagnosis of sarcopenia.

Abstract
A unified diagnostic criterion has yet to be established for sarcopenia. Therefore, we analyzed the reliability and validity of sarcopenia diagnosis using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) compared with the gold standard, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and evaluated the predictive accuracy of BIA for diagnosis. The clinical trial, involving a total of 239 participants, was conducted between December 2018 and September 2019 on healthy volunteers without significant medical histories. The participants underwent health assessments, followed by sequential DEXA and BIA measurements. In both the low and normal appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) groups, there were significant differences in the right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg, ASM, and ASM index (ASMI) between DEXA and BIA across all age groups (p < 0.05). BIA tended to overestimate compared to DEXA, but ASMI values for males and females were consistent with the criteria for sarcopenia. Bland-Altman analysis showed that each segment in both the low and normal ASM groups fell within the limits of agreement (LOA). The diagnosis of sarcopenia using BIA was significantly different from that using DEXA. However, it exhibited a significantly high correlation, fell within the LOA, and demonstrated high predictive accuracy. BIA can be considered an effective tool for diagnosing sarcopenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and fatty liver in middle-aged and elderly patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to provide a theoretical foundation for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. METHODS A total of 282 patients diagnosed with T2DM aged 50 and older and were admitted to the Endocrinology Department of Xin Medical University First Affiliated Hospital between December 2021 and February 2023, were selected. Body mass index (BMI), and limb and trunk muscle mass of the patients were measured, and data were collected. Patients were grouped based on the sarcopenia diagnostic criteria. All study participants underwent the same physical examinations and laboratory tests. The relationship between the onset of sarcopenia and fatty liver in middle-aged and elderly patients diagnosed with T2DM was then investigated using statistical analysis. RESULTS Comparing the sarcopenia group to the non-sarcopenia group revealed statistically significant variations in gender, BMI, fatty liver prevalence rate, uric acid (UA), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood glucose, blood lipid associated indicators, and limb skeletal muscle content. There were, however, no statistically significant differences in age, disease duration, hypertension, smoking, or alcohol intake. There was a positive correlation between BMI, UA, fasting c-peptide, and Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Index (ASMI). Higher levels of BMI, ASMI, and UA were identified as protective variables against sarcopenia by multifactorial logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION Higher levels of BMI, ASMI, and UA can greatly reduce skeletal muscle atrophy in patients with T2DM. Patients with a fatty liver may be less vulnerable to sarcopenia. There is little evidence, however, that a fatty liver works as a preventive factor against sarcopenia.

Abstract
Purpose To establish, validate, and clinically evaluate a nomogram for predicting the risk of sarcopenia in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) based on clinical and lower extremity computed tomography angiography (LE-CTA) imaging characteristics. Methods Clinical data and CTA imaging features from 281 PAD patients treated between January 1, 2019, and May 1, 2023, at two hospitals were retrospectively analyzed using binary logistic regression to identify the independent risk factors for sarcopenia. These identified risk factors were used to develop a predictive nomogram. The nomogram's effectiveness was assessed through various metrics, including the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, area under the curve (AUC), concordance index (C-index), Hosmer-Lemeshow (HL) test, and calibration curve. Its clinical utility was demonstrated using decision curve analysis (DCA). Results Several key independent risk factors for sarcopenia in PAD patients were identified, namely age, body mass index (BMI), history of coronary heart disease (CHD), and white blood cell (WBC) count, as well as the severity of luminal stenosis (P < 0.05). The discriminative ability of the nomogram was supported by the C-index and an AUC of 0.810 (95% confidence interval: 0.757-0.862). A robust concordance between predicted and observed outcomes was reflected by the calibration curve. The HL test further affirmed the model's calibration with a P-value of 0.40. The DCA curve validated the nomogram's favorable clinical utility. Lastly, the model underwent internal validation. Conclusions A simple nomogram based on five independent factors, namely age, BMI, history of CHD, WBC count, and the severity of luminal stenosis, was developed to assist clinicians in estimating sarcopenia risk among PAD patients. This tool boasts impressive predictive capabilities and broad utility, significantly aiding clinicians in identifying high-risk individuals and enhancing the prognosis of PAD patients.

Abstract
AIMS We investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia and its influence on 1-year major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) in patients after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS AND RESULTS This retrospective medical record review using purposive sampling was conducted at a tertiary care university hospital in Korea. Medical records of a total of 303 patients (≥40 years) who underwent successful PCI between January 2014 and December 2020 were analysed. We retrospectively assessed sarcopenia at initial admission. Sarcopenia was assessed by a sarcopenia index based on a ratio of serum creatinine to serum cystatin C. MACE rates were evaluated within l year after PCI. A Kaplan-Meier analysis with a log-rank test was performed to compare the time with 1-year MACE event-free survival between groups with and without sarcopenia. Cox proportional hazards regression was conducted to assess sarcopenia's influence on MACE. The prevalence of sarcopenia and 1-year MACE after PCI were 24.8 and 8.6%, respectively. We found that sarcopenia at admission (hazard ratio, 3.01; 95% confidence interval, 1.22-7.38, P = 0.017) was significantly associated with 1-year MACE among patients after PCI. CONCLUSION Expanding knowledge of sarcopenia among cardiovascular nurses may aid in early recognition of patients at risk of sarcopenia. Our finding implies that the sarcopenia index based on serum creatinine and cystatin C may be available as a prognostic factor for MACE in patients undergoing PCI. Future studies should be conducted to prospectively validate the sarcopenia index with a multi-centre, large sample.

Abstract
Globally, we are currently facing a rapid demographic shift leading to an increase in the proportion of older adults within the population. This raises concerns about the potential increase in age-related diseases and their impact on our ability to provide adequate health and end-of-life care. To apply appropriate interventions, understanding the changes that happen with ageing becomes essential. Ageing is often accompanied by a decrease in appetite and physical activity, which may lead to malnutrition, resulting in decreased muscle mass, physical capabilities and independence. To preserve muscle mass, older adults are advised to increase protein intake and physical activity. However, protein's high satiating effect may cause reduced energy intake. Physical activity is also advised to maintain or enhance older adult's appetite. This review paper aims to discuss appetite-related changes that occur with ageing and their consequences. In particular, it will focus on investigating the relationship between protein intake and physical activity and their impact on appetite and energy intake in the ageing population. Recent studies suggest that physical activity might contribute to maintaining or enhancing appetite in older adults. Nevertheless, establishing a definitive consensus on the satiating effect of protein in ageing remains a work in progress, despite some promising results in the existing literature.

Abstract
Aging-related sarcopenia exerts harmful impacts on muscle mass, strength, and physical mobility. Protein supplementation has been demonstrated to augment efficacy of resistance training (RT) in elderly. This study compared the relative effects of different protein supplements on muscle mass, strength, and mobility outcomes in middle-aged and older individuals undergoing RT. A comprehensive search of online databases was performed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the efficacy of protein supplement plus RT in untrained community-dwelling adults, hospitalized, or institutionalized residents who suffered acute or chronic health conditions. Network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed using a frequentist method for all analyses. Treatment effects for main outcomes were expressed as standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). We used the surface-under-the cumulative-ranking (SUCRA) scores to rank probabilities of effect estimation among all identified treatments. Meta-regression analyses were performed to identify any relevant moderator of the treatment efficacy and results were expressed as β with 95% credible interval (CrI). We finally included 78 RCTs (5272 participants) for analyses. Among the six protein sources identified in this NMA, namely whey, milk, casein, meat, soy, and peanut, whey supplement yielded the most effective treatments augmenting efficacy of RT on muscle mass (SMD = 1.29, 95% CI: 0.96, 1.62; SUCRA = 0.86), handgrip strength (SMD = 1.46, 95% CI: 0.92, 2.00; SUCRA = 0.85), and walking speed (SMD = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.39, 1.07; SUCRA = 0.84). Participant's health condition, sex, and supplementation dose were significant factors moderating the treatment efficacy on muscle mass (β = 0.74; 95% CrI: 0.22, 1.25), handgrip strength (β = -1.72; 95% CrI: -2.68, -0.77), and leg strength (β = 0.76; 95% CrI: 0.06, 1.47), respectively. Our findings suggest whey protein yields the optimal supplements to counter sarcopenia in older individuals undergoing RT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is an age-related clinical syndrome characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass and muscle strength. It appears to be closely linked to dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, its prevalence among AD patients remains unclear. In this study, we assessed differences in sarcopenia prevalence between non-demented individuals and AD patients. Moreover, we assessed sex-specific differences in sarcopenia prevalence and explored the diagnostic value of the Muscle Quality Index (MQI) for diagnosing sarcopenia among AD patients. METHOD Cross-sectional study including 145 patients with probable AD and 51 older adults with normal cognition. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP1 and EWGSOP2) and of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH). The MQI was computed as the ratio of handgrip strength to skeletal muscle mass. RESULTS No significant difference in sarcopenia prevalence was observed between AD patients and controls. Prevalence ranged from 3.4 to 23.4% in AD patients and from 2 to 11.8% in controls, depending on diagnostic criteria. Prevalence was higher using EWGSOP1 and decreased using EWGSOP2 and FNIH. Prevalence was higher in males than in females with AD. The MQI was lower in AD patients than in controls (95%CI: - 0.23, - 0.05, p < 0.001), but displayed poor diagnostic accuracy in identifying sarcopenia cases. CONCLUSIONS AD patients and controls show comparable sarcopenia prevalence. Sarcopenia prevalence is higher in males than females among AD patients and higher when using EWGSOP1 compared to FNIH and EWGSOP2 criteria.
