Abstract
BACKGROUND In Japan, few studies have examined suicide risk for five-year relative survival rates for cancer sites. Since five-year relative survival rates differ by sex, we aim to examine suicide risk for patients with cancer separately for men and women. METHODS We estimated the risk of suicide among patients with cancer by sex in Japan compared to the general population, using standardized mortality ratios (SMRs). Patients with cancer diagnosed between January 1, 1985-December 31, 2013 and registered in the Osaka Cancer Registry were followed-up with for up to 10 years. The outcome was suicide death. In addition, cancer sites were classified into three prognosis groups based on five-year relative survival rates: good (> 70%), moderate (40-70%), poor (< 40%). RESULTS Among 623 995 patients with cancer observed for 2 349 432 person-years, 1210 patients died by suicide (867 men and 343 women). The SMRs were almost equal for men (1.66, 95% CI, 1.55-1.77) and women (1.65, 95% CI, 1.48-1.83). SMRs for cancer prognosis groups were 1.01 (95% CI, 0.84-1.22) for men and 1.47 (95% CI, 1.24-1.73) for women in the good group, 1.53 (95% CI, 1.39-1.68) for men and 1.74 (95% CI, 1.47-2.05) for women in the moderate group, and 2.54 (95% CI, 2.27-2.85) for men and 1.87 (95% CI, 1.43-2.46) for women in the poor group. CONCLUSIONS In this population, both sexes had higher suicide risk with poor prognosis, but the difference in SMRs between the good and poor groups was smaller for women than men.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In recent years, the incidence of thyroid cancer has increased manyfold and young adults, who have a greater financial burden and occupational stress, comprise a large number. Previous studies have shown mixed results, even distinct results, on suicide rates among thyroid cancer survivors. As the overdiagnosis and overtreatment of thyroid cancer has gradually become a topical issue, the study aims to summarise the risk of suicide among patients with thyroid cancer to provide robust evidence of the effects of thyroid cancer on suicide. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A total of six databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Google Scholar) will be searched according to MeSH, subheadings, and free words, and the planned search date is 31 Jnauary 2024. The search strategy had three parts, such as suicide, cancer and epidemiological studies, moreover, we will collect the detailed suicide information by reviewers' extraction. Standard mortality ratio (SMR) was used as the outcome measure, when SMRs were not available, the risk ratio, HR and detailed number of suicides were extracted to calculate the SMRs. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The Institutional Review Board of Peking University People's Hospital provided ethical approval exemption and approved the data collection and subsequent analyses in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki as revised in 2013. Abstract
Background Depression is frequently associated with breast cancer. However, its prevalence and impact on patients' quality of life are negligible. Depression is often underdiagnosed and less treated. Objectives Our study is aimed at estimating the prevalence of depression in breast cancer patients, describing their sociodemographic and clinical profile, and determining the factors associated with this depression. Material and Methods. We carried out a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study, conducted from January to March 2018 at Mohammed V Military Hospital in Rabat. The survey included 100 breast cancer patients. It was conducted using an anonymous questionnaire, the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview test (MINI test) to diagnose depression and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to assess its severity. Results The major depressive episode was diagnosed in 26% of breast cancer patients. Age under 40, psychiatric history, metastatic breast cancer, refusal of treatment, heavier treatment, and spousal alteration were the factors most associated with higher depression prevalence in these patients. Discussion and Conclusion. The high prevalence of depression in breast cancer patients, as well as the influence of personal characteristics and treatment in the occurrence of this ailment, has been confirmed by several authors. It is recommended to improve the psychooncological care of patients with breast cancer, to prevent the occurrence of depression in this vulnerable population.

Abstract
Objectives Review of the current and relevant literature to develop a list of evidence-based recommendations that can be implemented in head and neck surgical practices. To provide rationale for the multiple aspects of comprehensive care for head and neck surgical patients. To improve postsurgical outcomes for head and neck surgical patients. Methods Extensive review of the medical literature was performed and relevant studies in both the head and neck surgery and other surgical specialties were considered for inclusion. Results A total of 18 aspects of perioperative care were included in this review. The literature search included 276 publications considered to be the most relevant and up to date evidence. Each topic is concluded with recommendation grade and quality of evidence for the recommendation. Conclusion Since it's conception, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have continued to push for comprehensive and evidence based postsurgical care to improve patient outcomes. Head and neck oncology is one of the newest fields to develop a protocol. Due to the complexity of this patient population and their postsurgical needs, a multidisciplinary approach is needed to facilitate recovery while minimizing complications. Current and future advances in head and neck cancer research will serve to strengthen and add new principles to a comprehensive ERAS protocol. Level of Evidence 2a.

Abstract
Background: The study explores whether Polish cancer patients face elevated suicide risk, emphasizing the vital need to comprehend and mitigate their unique mental health struggles. Methods: We conducted a cohort study based on Polish National Cancer Registry data (diagnosis in 2009-2019). Age-, sex-, and year-standardized mortality ratios (SMR) are presented with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) overall and by sex. Results: The study included 1.43 million individuals diagnosed with cancer. There were 830 suicide cases in this group. The overall SMR for suicide was 1.34 (95% CI 1.25-1.43). The highest risk of suicide death was observed in the first six months after diagnosis (SMR = 1.94, 1.69-2.21): cancers of the heart and pleura (19.15, 2.32-69.18), an unspecified site (3.99, 1.09-10.22), and the esophagus (3.34, 1.08-7.79). The highest overall risk of suicide after cancer diagnosis was observed in esophageal (2.94, 1.47-5.26), gastric (2.70, 2.00-3.57), cervical (2.20, 1.06-4.05), and head and neck cancers (2.06, 1.52-2.72). Conclusions: Patients with cancer face significantly higher suicide risk, peaking within six months post-diagnosis. Urgent integration of suicide risk screening and prevention into cancer care is crucial, supporting mental well-being and guiding proactive healthcare strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We tested the hypothesis of supporters of assisted dying that assisted suicide (AS) might be able to prevent cases of conventional suicide (CS). METHODS By using data from the Federal Statistical Office, we analyzed the long-term development of 30,756 self-initiated deaths in Switzerland over a 20-year period (1999-2018; CS: n = 22,018, AS: n = 8738), focusing on people suffering from cancer who died from AS or CS. RESULTS While cancer was the most often listed principal disease for AS (n = 3580, 41.0% of AS cases), cancer was listed in only a small minority of CS cases (n = 832, 3.8% of CS cases). There was a significant increase in the absolute number of cancer-associated AS cases: comparing four 5-year periods, there was approximately a doubling of cases every 5 years (1999-2003: n = 228 vs.2004-2008: n = 474, +108% compared with the previous period; 2009-2013: n = 920, +94%; 2014-2018: n = 1958, +113%). The ratio of cancer-associated AS in relationship with all cancer-associated deaths increased over time to 2.3% in the last observation period (2014-2018). In parallel, the numbers of cancer-associated CS showed a downward trend only at the beginning of the observation period (1999-2003, n = 240 vs. 2004-2008, n = 199, -17%). Thereafter, the number of cases remained stable in the subsequent 5-year period (2009-2013, n = 187, -6%), and increased again toward the most recent period (2014-2018, n = 206, +10%). CONCLUSION The assumption that, with the increasingly accessible option of AS for patients with cancer, CS suicide will become "superfluous" cannot be confirmed. There are strong reasons indicating that situations and circumstances of cancer-associated CS are different from those for cancer-associated AS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several reports examined the survival of laryngeal cancer (LC) patients, most of these studies only focused on the prognosis of the disease, and just a small number of studies examined non-cancer-related causes of death. The objective of the current study is to investigate and quantify the most common causes of deaths following LC diagnosis. METHODS The data of 44,028 patient with LC in the United States diagnosed between 2000 and 2018 were retrieved from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and analyzed. We stratified LC patients according to various demographic and clinical parameters and calculated standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for all causes of death. RESULTS Over the follow-up period, 25,407 (57.7%) deaths were reported. The highest fatalities (11,121; 43.8%) occurred within 1-5 years following LC diagnosis. Non-cancer causes of death is the leading cause of death (8945; 35.2%), followed by deaths due to laryngeal cancer (8,705; 34.3%), then other cancers deaths (7757; 30.5%). The most common non-cancer causes of death were heart diseases (N = 2953; SMR 4.42), followed by other non-cancer causes of death (N = 1512; SMR 3.93), chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (N = 1420; SMR 4.90), then cerebrovascular diseases (N = 547; SMR 4.28). Compared to the general population, LC patients had a statistically significant higher risk of death from all reported causes. CONCLUSIONS Non-cancer causes of death is the leading cause of death in LC patients, exceeding deaths attributed to LC itself. These findings provide important insight into how LC survivors should be counselled regarding future health risks.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to identify granular groups with an increased risk of suicide among adolescents and young adult (AYA) patients with a previous malignant neoplasm diagnosis. METHODS We deployed a cohort of all cases of primary malignant neoplasms diagnosed between the 1st of January 2009 and the 31st of December 2019 among individuals aged 15-39 years registered in the Polish National Cancer Registry. To assess the risk of suicide in comparison with the general AYA population, we calculated sex-age-year standardized mortality ratios (SMR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS A total of 50,298 cancer patients (22,111 men and 28,187 women) were included in this study. The risk of suicide for AYA after cancer diagnosis was 2.39-fold higher than that for AYA in the general population (SMR 2.39, 95% CI 1.69 to 3.28). The risk in women (SMR 4.18, 95% CI 1.68 to 8.62) was higher than that in men (SMR 2.18, 95% CI 1.48 to 3.09). A significantly higher risk of suicide was observed in men with testicular cancer (SMR 2.46, 95% CI 1.37 to 4.05). CONCLUSIONS Polish AYA diagnosed with cancer had an almost 2.5-fold higher risk of suicide than the general AYA population. The particular risk group was men with testicular cancer within 2-3 and 5-10 years after cancer diagnosis. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS To better identify patients at risk of suicide, there is a need to create or adapt screening tools, educate cancer care providers and family physicians, and integrate psychological services into select cancer care specialties.

Abstract
The risk for suicide in patients with cancer is higher compared to the general population. However, little is known about patients with lung cancer specifically. We therefore implemented a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of retrospective cohort studies on suicide in patients with lung cancer. We searched a high number of common databases up to 02/2021. For the systematic review, a total of 23 studies was included. To exclude bias due to patient sample overlap, the meta-analysis was performed on 12 studies. The pooled standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for suicide was 2.95 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 2.42-3.60) for patients with lung cancer as compared to the general population. Subgroups with a pronouncedly higher risk for suicide compared to the general population were found for patients living in the USA (SMR = 4.17, 95% CI = 3.88-4.48), with tumors of late stage (SMR = 4.68, 95% CI = 1.28-17.14), and within one year after diagnosis (SMR = 5.00, 95% CI = 4.11-6.08). An increased risk for suicide was found in patients with lung cancer, with subgroups at particular risk. Patients at increased risk should be monitored more closely for suicidality and should receive specialized psycho-oncological and psychiatric care. Further studies should clarify the role of smoking and depressive symptoms on suicidality among lung cancer patients.

Abstract
Cancer screening is recommended for select cancers worldwide. Cancer screening has become increasingly effective and accessible and often increases overall survival. However, the mental health effects of cancer screening, such as its impact on depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, are largely unknown. Conflicting available literature indicates the negative, neutral, and positive mental health effects of cancer screening across cancer types. There are a limited number of randomized controlled trials measuring the mental health effects of cancer screening. Overall, the more negative and life-threatening the screening results, the greater the mental health effects. Screening for cancer without a known precursor, for example, due to family history, can have positive impacts such as decreased worry and increased quality of life. However, receiving a cancer diagnosis often has negative mental effects that increase with the life-threatening potential of malignancy. In this study, we review the existing literature and provide recommendations for future research to determine if and when cancer screening is the best practice.

Abstract
This study aimed to understand the suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts among cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were collected from patients diagnosed with cancer while attending the largest cancer center in the south of China. A structured questionnaire was used to investigate patients' demographic data, suicidal behavior, and factors related to COVID-19. Mental health conditions were measured by the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and the Brief Symptom Inventory. Comorbidities and medical conditions of cancer patients were extracted from the electronic healthcare records. Among the 5670 cancer patients, 755 (13.3%) reported suicidal ideation, and 266 (4.7%) reported suicidal attempts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The age group with the highest risk of suicidal ideation was 20-24 years (23.9%). Lifetime history of suffering from mental disorders, longer time since cancer diagnosis, regional and distant tumor stage, depression, anxiety, hostility, having a higher frequency of worrying about cancer management due to COVID-19, higher frequency feeling of overwhelming psychological pressure due to COVID-19, having a higher level of barriers to manage cancer due to COVID-19, and higher barriers to continue treatment of cancer due to inconveniences caused by COVID-19, were all significantly associated with increased risk of suicidal ideation. We also identified the risk factors of suicide attempts. This is the first study investigating the prevalence and risk factors associated with suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts in Chinese cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings suggest that it is essential to monitor the mental health conditions of this vulnerable population, especially for cancer patients who have comorbidity with a history of mental disorders. Also, government policymakers should take action to protect cancer patients to avoid any interruption of their continued treatment. Further efforts are urgently required to develop specific psychological interventions to reduce the risk factors among cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Background The rate of suicide within one year after diagnosis in pancreatic cancer patients are high, but suicide studies based on the current large-scale data are still a vacancy. Our study aimed to determine, compared to the general population, the standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) of suicide and risk factors associated with pancreatic cancer patients committing suicide to provide clues for prevention. Methods We collected 199,604 patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer between 2000 and 2018 from the SEER database. Multivariate logistic regression and multivariate Cox regression were applied to determine the risk factors independently affecting the suicide outcome of pancreatic cancer patients. Results A total of 180 suicide deaths were observed in the cohort, yielding an overall suicide rate of 88.05 per 100,000 person-years and an SMR of 6.43. In multivariate analyses, males (HR: 12.798, 95% CI: 7.471-21.923), unmarried (HR: 1.826, 95% CI: 1.205-2.767), and divorced, separated or widowed (HR: 1.779, 95% CI: 1.230-2.572) were found associated with a higher risk of suicide. While race black (HR: 0.250, 95% CI: 0.110-0.567), diagnosed with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (HR: 0.487, 95% CI: 0.276-0.859), received chemotherapy (HR: 0.456, 95% CI: 0.323-0.646), and received surgical procedures (HR: 0.553, 95% CI: 0.342-0.895) were indicated might protective factors. Conclusions The 199,604 pancreatic cancer patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2018 had an overall suicide rate of 88.05 per 100,000 person-years and an SMR of 6.43 compared to the U.S. general population. Male, white, unmarried, and diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients were associated with a higher risk of suicide, while cancer-directed surgery and chemotherapy might indicate protective factors. The screening and prevention process should be enhanced for pancreatic cancer patients with adverse risk factors. Moreover, it is reasonable to assume that timely cancer-directed treatment might help reduce the subsequent suicide risk of pancreatic cancer patients.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Women diagnosed with breast cancer experience severe trauma. Psychological help for breast cancer patients is not sufficient because of limited professional resources. The goal of this study was to identify groups of breast cancer patients with the greatest suicidal risk, who could be the first target for psychosocial interventions. Materials and Methods: The study included 421 women with stage T1–T3/N0–N3/M0 breast cancer. We provided women with a set of questionnaires 1–2 days prior to breast surgery and one year after surgery. One hundred eighty-eight patients completed the questionnaires after one year. We used the Beck Depression Inventory Second Edition (BDI-II) item Suicidal Thoughts or Intentions for the assessment of suicidal risk. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) was used to measure the risk of PTSD and the Vrana–Lauterbach Traumatic Events Questionnaire-Civilian, TEQ-C (TEQ-CV) was used to measure whether patients had experienced other traumatic events in their lifetime. Results: The incidence of suicidal ideation one year after surgery increased from 4.3% to 12.8% of patients. Patients who lived in rural areas had a two times greater risk of suicidal thoughts than patients who lived in urban areas. Working patients were 2.5 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts prior to surgery. Severely traumatic events increased the chances of suicidal ideation (OR 7.72; 95% CI 1.63–36.6; p = 0.01). The symptoms of PTSD showed a threefold increase in the likelihood of suicidal ideation (OR 2.89; 95% CI 0.98–8.55; p = 0.05). Conclusions: Living in the countryside, having a history of traumatic experience, having a paid job and having symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder influence suicidal ideation in breast cancer patients. Particular attention should be drawn to individuals with multiple risk factors.

Abstract
Despite substantial progress in cancer therapy in recent decades, patients with cancer remain at high suicide risk. Data from individual studies have not been comprehensively quantified and specific risk factors are ill-defined. We assessed suicide mortality risk according to cancer prognosis, stage, time since diagnosis, gender, ethnicity, marital status, year of recruitment and geographic region. We searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CINAHL and Google Scholar for relevant articles up to February 2021. We used a random effects model, performed meta-regression meta-analysis and assessed heterogeneity and publication bias using I², funnel plots and Egger's and Begg's tests. We performed a systematic review including 62 studies and 46,952,813 patients. To avoid patient sample overlap, the meta-analysis was performed on 28 studies, involving 22,407,690 patients with cancer. Suicide mortality was significantly increased compared with the general population (standardized mortality ratio = 1.85, 95% confidence interval = 1.55-2.20). Risk was strongly related to cancer prognosis, cancer stage, time since diagnosis and geographic region. Patients with cancer, particularly those with specific risk factors, should be closely monitored for suicidality and need specialized care to reduce short- and long-term risks of suicide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Large cohort studies that estimate the variation in suicide risk among cancer patients, depending on disease type and patient characteristics, are lacking. We aimed to investigate suicide risk among patients with different cancers types in the United States (US) and to identify subsets of patients at particularly high risk. METHODS A total of 9,300,812 cases of cancer in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database that were diagnosed between 1975 and 2016 were included in the study. Standardized mortality ratio (SMR) and absolute excess risk (AER) of suicide were estimated. FINDINGS From the included cases, 14,423 cancer patients were identified as having died by suicide, representing 0.26% of all deaths. We found that cancer patients had a higher risk of suicide compared with the general population, which equated to 0.8 excess deaths per 10,000 person-years. Greater suicide risk was correlated with the following: specific cancer sites, male sex, American Indian/Alaskan Native ancestry, being divorced, being uninsured, distance of metastasis, aged between 60 and 69 at diagnosis, and having a more recent diagnosis. The greatest SMR and AER were found in patients with cancers of the respiratory system, followed by those of the oral cavity and pharynx, myeloma, bones and joints, digestive system, and brain and other nervous system cancers. INTERPRETATION Suicide risk among cancer patients varies greatly and depends on both disease type and patient characteristics. A tailored clinical management should be considered for patients at a higher risk of suicide. FUNDING Natural Science Foundation of China.

Abstract
Although cancer patients are known to experience mental disorders and face suicide risk, little is known about the relationship between mental illness and death by suicide in this group. As such, this study aims to examine the association between mental disorders and suicide risk among cancer patients. We used nationally representative cohort data, and included newly diagnosed cancer patients from 2004 to 2012 with whom we followed-up throughout 2013. We used the clinical diagnoses of all mental disorders as an independent variable and suicide death as a dependent variable to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) of suicide deaths in patients with cancer using a Cox proportional hazard model. Among total cancer patients (n = 36,220), the 10,567 patients with mental disorders showed higher suicide risk than non-cancer patients (AHR, 1.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07-2.17), particularly in those who experienced mental disorders prior to cancer diagnosis (AHR, 2.24; 95% CI, 1.35-3.71). Suicide risk among cancer patients who had mood disorders (AHR, 2.23, 95% CI, 1.31-3.81) or anxiety and somatoform disorders (AHR, 1.61, 95% CI, 1.02-2.55) was higher than for those without mental disorders. Suicide risk of stomach (AHR, 3.32; 95% CI, 1.36-8.10) and liver (AHR, 7.57; 95% CI, 1.86-30.72) cancer patients who had mental disorders was higher than for patients without mental disorders. Cancer patients with mental disorders are at increased risk for suicide. During follow-ups after cancer diagnosis, early mental health support needs were provided to patients with mental disorders.

Abstract
Background:
Depression is a common psychiatric problem in the elderly and oncology patients. In elderly people with cancer, depression has a peculiar phenomenology. It has a significant impact on the quality of life. Moreover, it is associated with poor adherence to treatments, increased risk of suicide, and mortality. Nevertheless, the topic of depression in elderly people with cancer remains unexplored.
Objective:
The main goal of this article is to review the literature from the past 20 years on the relationships between depression, cancer, and aging.
Methods:
The methods followed the Prisma model for eligibility of studies. The articles in which the keywords “depression”, “cancer”, “ elderly, aging, or geriatric” were present, either in the text or in the abstract, were selected. 8.056 articles, by matching the keywords “depression and elderly and cancer,” were identified. Only 532 papers met the eligibility criteria of search limits and selection process. Out of 532 papers, 467 were considered irrelevant, leaving 65 relevant studies. Out of 65 suitable studies, 39 (60.0%) met our quality criteria and were included.
Results:
The risk factors associated with depression in elderly people with cancer can be divided into 4 groups: 1) tumor-related; 2) anticancer treatment-related; 3) patients-related; 4) number and type of comorbidity. The main obstacles in diagnosing depression in elderly patients with cancer are the overlap of the symptoms of cancer and side effects of treatment with the symptoms of depression but also the different ways of reporting depressive symptoms of elderly people and the different clinical types of depression. There is a lack of data regarding validated scales to assess depression in geriatric patients with cancer. Any mental illness, specifically co-occurring anxiety and depression, increases the risk of diagnosis delay and anticancer treatment adherence. Cancer and the diagnosis of mental disorders prior to cancer diagnosis correlate with an increased risk for suicide. A non-pharmacological therapeutic approach, pharmacological treatment and/or a combination of both can be used to treat elderly patients with cancer, but a detailed analysis of comorbidities and the assessment of polypharmacy is mandatory in order to avoid potential side-effects and interactions between antidepressants and the other drugs taken by the patients.
Conclusion:
Future research should be conducted with the aim of developing a modified and adapted assessment method for the diagnosis and treatment of depression in elderly people with cancer in order to improve their clinical outcomes and quality of life.

Abstract
Being responsible for a death every 40s, suicide is a major public health concern (Brunier et al. 2019). Even if many of its risk factors are social (Van Orden et al. 2010), there are surprisingly few qualitative sociological studies about the phenomenon. This study aim is to provide a life-story sociological analysis of suicidal trajectories. Two challenges are identified: gathering suicidal narrative and maintaining a quantitative foreground in order to deepen and rationalize the interpretation of data. They are both faced using a self-made, free to use, open access, algorithm: Highway_star (https://github.com/matheo-daly/highway_star). Two corpora of Wikipedia biographies of people who died by suicide in the 1920s (N = 82) and 2020s (N = 49) are gathered. Following an application of Fritze Schütze's methodology (Schütze, 2014), classical textual visualizations are produced. A Hierarchical Descending Classification, a Factorial Correspondence Analysis and a Similarity Analysis reveal five narration categories centered around different topics: cinema, death, family, poetry and politics. As none of those visualizations focuses on the developmental aspect of the biography, they offer limited interest for a life-story investigation. The second functionality of the Highway_star tool, which represents a narrative's unfolding with a Sankey Diagram, allows completing the analysis. It shows interesting differences between decades or gender. An example of the last being that men narratives tend to be more complex and achievement focused, while the women ones are more linear and family centered. The study's range has limitations. A major one is related to the corpus and the inability to identify clearly which parts of the narratives are associated to fame and which to suicide. Another one is linked to the Highway_star tool that sometimes lack of flexibility.

Abstract
Background As the survival rates of cancer patients continue to increase, most cancer patients now die of non-cancer causes. Several studies have been showing elevated suicide rates among patients with cancer. However, no large-scale study has thoroughly assessed the risk of suicide among adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer. This study was conducted to characterize suicide mortality among AYA patients in the US and identify risk factors associated with a higher risk of suicide. Methods Patients aged 15–39 years were residents of the US served by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program, who were diagnosed with cancers from 1973 to 2015. Results We report that 981 of the 572,500 AYA patients with cancer committed suicide, for an age-, sex-, and race-adjusted suicide rate of 17.68/100,000 person-years. The rate of suicide was 14.33/100,000 person-years in the corresponding general population, giving a standardized mortality ratio (SMR) of 1.234 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.159–1.313]. Higher suicide rates were associated with male sex, white race, unmarried state, distant tumor stage, and single primary tumor. AYA patients with otorhinolaryngologic, gonad, stomach, soft tissue, and nasopharyngeal cancer were at the greatest risk of suicide compared with those with other types of cancer. In older patients (≥ 40 years), the risk was highest in those with lung, stomach, oral cavity and pharynx, larynx, and bone malignancies. SMRs were highest in the first 5 years after diagnosis for most types of cancer. Conclusion AYA patients with cancer in the US have over 20% higher the incidence of suicide of the general population, and most suicides occurred in the first 5 years following diagnosis. Suicide rates vary among patients with cancers of different anatomic sites. Further examination of the psychological experience of these young patients with cancer, particularly that of those with certain types of cancer, is warranted. Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the high-risk period of the occupation of suicide after diagnosis; and clarify the risk factors of suicidal behaviors (suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and suicidal death) behind the lung cancer patients during the cancer cure process. METHODS This scoping review was conducted through the whole month of April 2021. We extracted data of the suicide mortality after diagnosis and latent risk factors of suicidal behaviors among lung cancer patients where we used to study from the two online databases which are PubMed and Web of Science. Two online databases were searched and written in English without age restriction. To note that the standardized mortality ratio (SMR), person-years, and odds ratio (OR) associated with lung cancer were documented. RESULTS Out of 570 records, 23 studies mentioned suicidal behaviors and lung cancer met the included criteria. Eleven (n = 47.8%) of the selected publications reported changes in suicide mortality. None of them reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempt after diagnosis. The individuals with lung cancer have significantly higher rates of suicidal death (SMR, 2.04-13.4) during the first years after diagnosis and decrease over subsequent years (SMR, 0.66-3.17). The median time from cancer diagnosis to suicide death was around 7 months. Across all studies with the 22 studies that examined factors, we extracted the data of the suicidal ideation (n = 3), suicide attempt (n = 1), and suicidal death (n = 18) in individuals. For patients with suicidal ideation, there was a significantly higher incidence in males than in females. Among patients who attempted suicide, the incidence of mental illness is greater than the incidence of physical illness. Factors for suicidal death, including gender (male, 56.3-100%), prognosis tumors (poor, 25.8-66.3%), marital status (widowhood or unmarried, 19-75.7%), and age of patients (> 70 years, 24.5-47%) with lung cancer, play a vital role. Treatment of lung cancer is expected to affect a patient in his/her mental state. CONCLUSION Overall, our finding indicates that lung cancer patients have been presented with a higher incidence of suicide death in a specific period, especially the early years after diagnosis. Discovering risk factors for suicide helps prevent potential suicide. It is essential to screen lung cancer patients for suicidal ideation, especially those with high-risk factors. Future prospective studies are necessary to confirm these findings to support care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to determine whether the suicide risk increased after a cancer diagnosis. DESIGN Population-based cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS This study incorporated the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort in South Korea. Of the 975 348 subjects, 39 027 with cancer and 936 321 who were cancer free participated between 2005 and 2013. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE Suicide. RESULTS A total of 110 suicides (82 men, 28 women) were identified among these 39 027 subjects with cancer during a total of 127 184 person-years; among the 936 321 cancer-free subjects, 2163 suicides were reported during a total of 8 222 479 person-years. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare all-cause and suicide mortalities after cancer diagnosis following adjustment for possible confounding covariates. After adjusting for factors related to suicide, we identified an elevated relative risk of suicide among patients with cancer (HR: 1.480, 95% CI: 1.209 to 1.812). Among men, the relative risk was substantially increased among patients with lip, oral cavity/pharyngeal, colon and rectal, pancreatic and lung cancers when compared with cancer-free subjects; whereas among women, the relative risk was substantially increased among patients with colon and rectal cancers. CONCLUSION Our study observed an increased risk of suicide among patients with cancer that varied according to the anatomical cancer site, even after accounting for clinical comorbidities and psychiatric illness. Our findings indicate a need for social support and suicide prevention strategies for patients with cancer.

Abstract
People with advanced cancer are at heightened risk of desire for hastened death (DHD), suicidal ideation (SI), and completed suicide. Loss of Meaning (LoM), a component of demoralization, can be elevated by a cancer diagnosis and predicts DHD and SI in this population. We completed a randomized controlled trial in which psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) produced rapid and sustained improvements in depression, demoralization, and hopelessness in people with cancer. Converging epidemiologic and clinical trial findings suggests a potential antisuicidal effect of this treatment. To probe our hypothesis that PAP relieves SI through its beneficial impacts on depression and demoralization (LoM in particular), we performed secondary analyses assessing within- and between-group differences with regard to LoM and an SI composite score. Among participants with elevated SI at baseline, PAP was associated with within-group reductions in SI that were apparent as early as 8 h and persisted for 6.5 months postdosing. PAP also produced large reductions in LoM from baseline that were apparent 2 weeks after treatment and remained significant and robust at the 6.5 month and 3.2 and 4.5 year follow-ups. Exploratory analyses support our hypothesis and suggest that PAP may be an effective antisuicidal intervention following a cancer diagnosis due to its positive impact on hopelessness and demoralization and its effects on meaning-making in particular. These preliminary results implicate psilocybin treatment as a potentially effective alternative to existing antidepressant medications in patients with cancer that are also suicidal, and warrant further investigation in participants with elevated levels of depression and suicidality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Throughout the world, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains the primary type of liver cancer. The suicide risk was higher among patients with HCC than the general population. Hence, the purpose of this study was to confirm the suicide rates, standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), and the potential risk factors associated with suicide among HCC patients. METHODS HCC patients were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database during 1975-2016. Suicide rates and SMRs among these patients were calculated, and the general population of the United States (U.S.) during 1975-2016 was used as a reference. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression were taken to find out the underlying risk factors of suicide in HCC patients. RESULTS There were 70 suicides identified among 102,567 individuals with HCC observed for 160,500.88 person years. The suicide rate was 43.61 per 100,000 person-years, and SMR was 2.26 (95% CI: 1.78-2.84). On Cox regression, year of diagnosis (1975-1988 vs. 2003-2016, HR: 3.00, 95% CI: 1.01-8.89, P = 0.047; 1989-2002 vs. 2003-2016, HR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.10-3.34, P = 0.021), gender (male vs. female, HR: 8.72, 95% CI: 2.73-27.81, P < 0.001), age at diagnosis (63-105 years old vs. 0-55 years old, HR: 2.28, 95% CI: 1.21-4.31, P = 0.011), race (white race vs. American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian/Pacific Islander, HR: 3.02, 95% CI: 1.35-6.76, P = 0.007) were independent risk factors of suicide among HCC patients. CONCLUSIONS Diagnosed in the early years (1975-2002), male sex, the older age (63-105 years old), white race, survival months (<2 months) were significantly associated with suicide among HCC patients. For the sake of preventing suicide behaviors, the government, clinicians, and family members should take adequate measures to decrease the rate of suicide, especially in patients with high-risk factors of suicide.

Abstract
Social workers have a prominent role in responding to cancer patients' mental health needs. Given the risk of mental health distress in cancer patients, and given that social workers are responsible for responding to these needs, the purpose of this study was to explore how social workers describe their role in responding to mental health distress and suicidality in people with cancer. The Grounded Theory method of data collection and analysis was used. Eighteen social workers were recruited and interviewed. Social workers saw themselves and acted as an interprofessional hub for their patients. This approach was based on the values of holistic care, multiple treatment modalities, interpersonal consultation, and continuity of care. From this standpoint, social workers offered their patients (and at times, their families) comprehensive services providing emotional, behavioral and practical support within the hospital setting, but also outside of it in the patient's communities. Consideration should be paid to promote systemic changes to acknowledge and compensate oncology socials workers' invisible labor that includes both emotional carryover and continuous engagement in their role as liaison and intermediaries for their patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence indicated the higher risk of suicide in cancer survivors compared with general population. Our aim is to systematically quantify the extent of suicide death and identify risk factors associated with the incidence of suicide in cancer patients. METHODS We conducted a meta-analysis of relevant studies published in English or Chinese before May 20, 2020. Suicide rate and the number of suicide death were extracted. Our main outcome was suicide rate per 100,000 person-years with 95% CIs using random-effects model. RESULTS The pooled incidence of suicide death was 39.72 per 100,000 person-years (95%CI, 33.91-46.52, I 2= 99.6%, P <0 .001). The suicide rate for cancer patients was higher in men (57.78, 95%CI, 47.31-70.56) than in women (14.47, 95%CI, 11.27-18.57). For both sexes combined, esophagus cancer had the highest rate of suicide (87.71, 95%CI, 27.42-280.54). By sex, suicide rates ranked first in males and females were pancreas cancer (195.70, 95%CI, 129.55-295.61) and esophagus cancer (18.34, 95%CI, 5.92-56.84), respectively. The highest suicide rate was 61.02(95%CI, 53.66-69.40) in Asia, and Oceania (24.07, 95%CI, 20.78-27.88) had lowest suicide rate. Suicide rate had a downward trend by years after diagnosis, with the first six months after cancer diagnosis clearly standing out (89.33, 95%CI, 50.64-157.58). LIMITATIONS Included studies came from high-income countries and our results might not represent the suicide rate among cancer patients in low- and middle-income countries. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of suicide among cancer patients was high despite the declined trend recent years, which emphasized psychological health aspects of interventions and perfecting suicide prevention programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have shown that people with physical illness are at increased risk of suicide, but knowledge on the association between absence from work due to specific physical health problems and suicide risk is limited. This study aimed to examine the relationship between suicide risk and physical illness requiring leave from work across a range of specific physical diagnoses, and to study the interactions of mental illness and socioeconomic factors on this relationship. METHODS Using a nested case-control design, 9313 suicide cases and 169 235 matched controls were retrieved and interlinked from Norwegian national registries. Data on sick leave and related physical illness were derived from claims for sickness benefit and analyzed using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS For males, the risk of suicide increased progressively with the number of previous physical illness-related absences and the duration of recent physical illness-related absences. Absences related to digestive, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders as well as cancer and accidents/injuries were associated with a significantly increased risk of suicide. In contrast, females with a history of physical illness-related absence and a diagnosis of most organ or system specific illnesses were at a relatively reduced risk of suicide. In both genders, the suicide risk associated with physical illness resulting in absence from work differentiated significantly by history of sickness absence due to mental illness, and by education and income levels. CONCLUSIONS The risk of suicide associated with physical illness requiring leave from work varied significantly by gender and by education and income status.

Abstract
To explore the role of culture in communicating with cancer patients about mental health distress and suicidality. The Grounded Theory method of data collection and analysis was used. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) reported that language competency was a facilitator while being unable to speak the language or understand the nuances of their patient's communication could be a barrier. HCPs noted that being culturally matched with their patients helped them communicate effectively. HCPs also spoke about religious taboos on suicide as being a barrier to having conversations, either because patients did not feel comfortable discussing these issues, or because they perceived that this was not a topic they could bring up. Some HCPs reported that the culture/ethnicity of their patients had no effect on their ability to communicate effectively with them about mental health distress or suicidality. Advancing effective cross-cultural communication is a challenge faced by HCPs. Raising awareness about communication styles is an important step in addressing communication gaps about mental health and suicide with cancer patients. Training should facilitate skill development to engage in a culturally humble approach to cross-cultural communication including diversity training which encourages asking and actively listening to patients' needs and preferences.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify how oncology nurses address mental health distress and suicidality in patients, what strategies they employ in treating this distress, and the barriers they face in addressing distress and suicidality in patients with cancer. PARTICIPANTS & SETTING 20 oncology nurses at two cancer centers in Israel were interviewed. METHODOLOGIC APPROACH The grounded theory method of data collection and analysis was employed. FINDINGS Strategies used in addressing patients' mental health distress were being emotionally available, providing practical support, treating physical symptoms, and referring to counseling. Strategies in addressing suicidality were assessing the situation, offering end-of-life or palliative care, treating physical symptoms, and referring for assessment. Barriers to addressing distress were lack of training, stigma, workload or lack of time, and limited availability and accessibility of mental health resources. Barriers in addressing suicidality were lack of knowledge and training, patient reluctance to receive care, and lack of protocol. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Developing guidelines for addressing and responding to mental health distress and suicidality is essential to improving patients' quality of life and reducing disease-related morbidity and mortality. Reducing mental healthcare stigma for patients is critical.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have adequately addressed long-term survival (>20 years from diagnosis) among survivors of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancers. METHODS In this retrospective, population-based cohort study in a US integrated health care system, the authors examined cause-specific mortality in 2-year survivors of AYA cancers (patients aged 15-39 years who were diagnosed between 1990 and 2012; N = 10,574) matched (by age, sex, and calendar year) to individuals without cancer (N = 136,683) to determine whether mortality rates changed over time. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for mortality were estimated using multivariable Poisson regression. A multivariable Cox model was used to examine predictors of cause-specific mortality among AYA cancer survivors. RESULTS Through December 31, 2014, 1352 deaths were observed among AYA cancer survivors, yielding an overall survival rate of 78.5% at 25 years after diagnosis. Overall, AYA cancer survivors were at 10.4-fold increased risk for death (95% CI, 9.7-fold to 11.2-fold increased risk for death) compared with the matched noncancer cohort, and this risk remained elevated at >20 years after diagnosis (IRR, 2.9; 95% CI, 2.0-4.3). The absolute excess risk for death from any cause was 12.7 per 1000 person-years (95% CI, 11.9-13.4 per 1000 person-years). Starting at 15 years after diagnosis, the incidence of second cancer-related mortality exceeded the rate of recurrence-related mortality, and similar trends were observed for deaths from other health-related conditions. The 8-year cumulative incidence of mortality declined over time (before 2000, 12.6%; 2000-2006, 10.1%; after 2006, 7.3%; P < .001), largely because of declines in recurrence-related mortality. Age, sex, race/ethnicity, cancer stage at diagnosis, and cancer treatment predicted cause-specific mortality. CONCLUSIONS The current data highlight the need for specialized, long-term follow-up care for AYA cancer survivors.

Abstract
Importance Although a few studies have shown that mental health disorders (MHDs) are strongly associated with the 5-year survival and recurrence rates in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), none have been replicated in a large-scale study. Objective To describe the prevalence of MHDs in patients with HNC and the potential associations with survival and recurrence using a large insurance claims database. Design, Setting, and Participants This retrospective cohort study assessed data queried from the MarketScan database from January 1, 2005, through December 31, 2014, for 52 641 patients with a diagnosis of HNC. To exclude patients with a preexisting HNC diagnosis or those with incomplete data, patients were included if they were in the database for at least 12 months before the index diagnosis and continuously enrolled. Data were analyzed from February 20, 2017, through January 22, 2019. Main Outcomes and Measures To compare the frequency of MHDs before and after diagnosis of HNC, χ2 tests for independence were used. Adjusted adds ratios (aORs) were obtained using multivariable logistic regression by comparing the prevalence of MHDs in patients with oral cavity cancer and those with other cancer sites in the head and neck. Results Among the 52 641 patients included in the analysis (mean [SD] age, 51.31 [9.79] years), men (58.5%), patients aged 55 to 64 years (46.6%), and those from the South (40.3%) were most commonly affected by HNC. Oral cavity cancers (40.4%) were the most common type, followed by cancers of the oropharynx (19.2%) and larynx (15.5%). Of the various cancer sites, the OR for MHD prevalence was significantly increased in patients with cancers of the trachea compared with the oral cavity (2.11; 95% CI, 1.87-2.38). The prevalence of MHDs in patients with HNC increased to 29.9% compared with 20.6% before the cancer diagnosis. Specifically, women (adjusted OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.49-1.67) and patients with a history of tobacco use (adjusted OR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.34-1.50) and alcohol use (adjusted OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.38-1.76) had significantly higher odds of MHDs after the diagnosis of HNC. Conclusions and Relevance Although the baseline MHD prevalence of 20.6% before the cancer diagnosis was close to the national average (17.9% according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health), results of this study showed that it increased to 29.9% after the cancer diagnosis. Women and patients with a history of tobacco and alcohol use were most susceptible to being diagnosed with an MHD. There is an association between patients with HNC and an increased prevalence of MHDs after treatment compared with the general population.

Abstract
Despite good prognosis, increased suicide rates are reported for prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of suicide among prostate cancer patients before and after the start of nation-wide prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening programme. Prostate cancer cases diagnosed between 2000 and 2011 were identified from the population-based Lithuanian Cancer Registry and analysis was conducted in 2018. Analysis was stratified by period of diagnosis, age, Gleason score, extent of disease, and time since diagnosis. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were used to assess suicide risk. SMRs were calculated by dividing the observed number of suicides among prostate cancer patients by the expected number of suicides from the general population. Overall, 25 786 prostate cancer cases were diagnosed 2000-2011, and 135 suicides occurred among them compared with expected number of 133 (SMR: 1.10; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.85-1.20). The suicide risk among prostate cancer patients was 1.08 before and 0.97 after the start of nation-wide PSA-based screening programme. Statistically significant increase in suicide risk was associated with Gleason score 8-10 in the prescreening period (SMR: 2.45; 95% CI 1.23-4.90). Suicide risk among prostate cancer patients before and after introduction of nation-wide PSA-based screening programme is similar to that in the general population.

Abstract
Depression and depressive symptoms are prevalent in patients with cancer. Depression is underdiagnosed and therefore, patients often receive inadequate treatment for depression. We have assessed the evidence of primary prophylactic treatment for depression in patients with cancer. The systematic review was prospectively registered at PROSPERO and was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Five electronic databases were searched on the 31st of May 2018 and two independent reviewers screened the papers. Randomized controlled trials of adult patients with cancer treated prophylactically with an antidepressive intervention of any kind using validated assessment tools to measure depression or depressive symptoms were included. No language or publication year restrictions were applied. Seven out of eighteen studies reported a statistically significant prophylactic effect on depression. The studies were classified into three groups based on the type of intervention. The meta-analyses showed a significant difference in favour of pharmacotherapy (RR 0.34, 95% CI 0.18; 0.63), psychotherapy (SMD -0.23,95% CI -0.46; 0.00), and other interventions (SMD -0.17, 95% CI -0.31; -0.03). Only one study had overall low risk of bias and the rest had high risk of bias predominantly due to blinding, incomplete data, or allocation concealment. Preventive measures have been examined in patients with cancer, but no convincing evidence for any specific intervention is present. Depression in patients with cancer can be prevented and prophylactic treatment should be given during oncological treatment but further high quality studies testing safe interventions are still needed.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the most common diseases and suicide is one of the causes of cancer patients' mortality. However, the suicide mortality rate in cancer patients has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and a meta-analysis of suicide mortality risk in cancer patients. The authors systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, psycInfo, and Google Scholar databases using MESH keywords until July 2018; searching was limited to English. Random effects model was used for meta-analyzing the studies. Forest plot was calculated for the whole of the 22 studies and the subgroups. Publication bias was examined, and qualitative evaluation of the articles entered into the meta-analysis was also carried out. 22 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) for suicide mortality (SMR = 1.55; 95% and confidence interval (CI) CI = 1.37-1.74) in cancer patients were achieved. It has been shown (SMR = 1.67; 95% CI = 1.48-1.89 and p < 0.001) that cancer has increased suicidal rates in men and also in women (SMR = 1.34; 95% CI = 1.20-1.50 and p < 0.001). The following results were reported based on the subtypes of cancer; pooled SMR = 2.06; 95% CI = 1.32-3.23, and p < 0.001 in esophagus, stomach, pancreas and liver cancers; SMR = 1.57; 95% CI = 1.26-1.97, and p < 0.001 in colon and rectum cancers; SMR = 3.07; 95% CI = 2.20-4.28, and p < 0.001 in bronchus, trachea and lung cancers; SMR = 1.24; 95% CI = 1.03-1.48, and p = 0.020 in breast cancer; SMR = 1.71; 95% CI = 1.38-2.12, and p < 0.001 in prostate cancer. Overall, there is an evaluated suicide mortality rate in cancer patients. There was some evidence of publication bias. Our findings indicate that cancer increases the risk of suicide. Given the results and co-morbidities between suicide-induced cancer and other psychological disorders, the development of psychological interventions can be useful in reducing the risk of suicide in these patients.

Abstract
Abstract. Background: A substantial number of people with cancer endorse suicidality when compared with the general population. Thus, oncology healthcare workers may experience the death of a patient to suicide over their careers. Aims: To explore the impact of patients' mental health distress and suicidality on oncology personnel with a secondary aim of exploring how personnel cope with these types of events. Method: We interviewed 61 healthcare professionals (HCPs) at two cancer centers. The grounded theory method (GT) was used. Results: The impact of patients' mental health distress and suicidal ideation on oncology HCPs included sadness, depression, worry and concern, and feeling emotionally overwhelmed. The impact of patient suicide on HCPs included trauma, guilt, and surprise. Oncology personnel reported a change in practice, including communication style, being attuned to patient cues, and changing the physical environment. Coping strategies included colleague support, seeking professional help, and setting boundaries between their work and home life. Limitations: It is likely that HCPs who participated in the study represent those who are more willing to discuss issues related to suicide. Thus, the impact of patient suicide on healthcare providers may be even more pronounced among the general oncology HCP community. Conclusion: Given the higher risk of suicide among cancer patients, it is necessary to increase awareness about the impact these events may have on HCPs. Professional guidelines can highlight the need for a balance between ensuring the availability of informal support and more formal methods of help.

Abstract
Background Many researchers have studied suicide risk factors of patients with one specific cancer. But there is no comprehensive study to compare suicide issues between adolescents and young adult (AYA) group and all-age groups in a pan-cancer view. Methods Patients diagnosed with 20 solid malignancies were identified from SEER database. Multivariable logistic regression was operated to find out risk factors of suicide. Results Male sex has less impact on AYA than all-age patients (OR 2.72, 95% CI: 2.23-3.31, P<0.001 vs. OR 4.64, 95% CI: 4.37-4.94, P<0.001), while white race (OR 3.28, 95% CI: 2.02-5.77, P<0.001 vs. OR 3.40, 95% CI: 3.02-3.84, P<0.001) and unmarried status (OR 1.51, 95% CI: 1.24-1.83, P<0.001 vs. OR 1.39, 95% CI: 1.33-1.46, P<0.001) have similar impact on AYA and all-age groups. Localized cancer stage may have stronger impact on AYA than all-age (OR 2.90, 95% CI: 1.83-4.84; P<0.001 vs. OR 1.76, 95% CI: 1.61-1.92; P<0.001), while surgery only influence all-age (OR 1.14, P=0.451 vs. 1.24, P<0.001). Within 5 years from cancer diagnosis, longer survival time is associated with higher suicide risk of both all-age and AYA patients. Conclusions Male sex, white race and unmarried status, earlier cancer stage and longer survival time within 5 years are similar prevalent risk factors for both AYA group patients and all-age patients. It is not necessary to pick AYA cancer patients out when considering suicide risk of cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood cancer survivors have been reported to be vulnerable to psychiatric morbidities and risky health behavior. Suicides, substance abuse, accidents, and violence as causes of death can be regarded as an extreme manifestation of risky health behavior. In the current study, the authors studied the risk of suicide and other risky health behavior-related deaths among childhood cancer patients in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. METHODS Using linkage between national cancer, population, and cause-of-death registries, the authors investigated the causes of death in 29,285 patients diagnosed with cancer before age 20 years between 1971 and 2009 compared with a cohort of 146,282 age-matched, sex-matched, and country-matched population comparisons. Rate ratios (RRs) with 95% CIs were estimated using Poisson regression models, adjusting for demographic factors. RESULTS The overall risk of dying of a risky health behavior was found to be increased among childhood cancer patients (RR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.06-1.47) when compared with population comparisons. The elevated risk was statistically significant among patients with central nervous system tumors (RR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.08-2.05) and patients diagnosed at ages 5 to 9 years and 15 to 19 years (RR, 1.50 [95% CI, 1.01-2.24] and RR, 1.31 [95% CI, 1.03-1.67], respectively). The overall risk of suicide was found to be increased (RR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.02-1.83), and statistically significantly so when patients were diagnosed between ages 15 and 19 years (RR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.09-2.39). CONCLUSIONS Childhood cancer patients appear to have an increased risk of risky health behavior-related causes of death compared with the general population. The results of the current study suggest the importance of integrating psychosocial support into the follow-up care of these individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to summarize interventions for suicide prevention in patients with cancer and highlight any methodological issues. METHODS We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and the Cochrane database from their inception until July 2018. Additionally, we manually searched the references of included studies and recent systematic reviews of psychotherapy, antidepressants, and collaborative care for cancer patients with depression. RESULTS Of the 1365 retrieved articles, 11 randomized controlled trials and 11 intervention studies met the inclusion criteria. These were categorized by type of intervention: psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, integrated collaborative care, muscle relaxation and therapeutic walking, and cancer treatment. The trials showed little evidence to confirm the effects of suicide prevention strategies. Seven trials were designed to assess the efficacy of interventions treating depression. In all studies, suicidal behavior or ideation was reported as one of the secondary outcomes. Three trials did not report information about suicidal ideation, despite assessing depressive symptoms using scales that contained suicidal ideation items. Most trials demonstrated inadequate study quality. CONCLUSIONS Our review summarized interventions for suicide prevention in patients with cancer and revealed methodological issues. The findings highlighted a need to explore new treatment strategies that focus on unique suicide risk factors among patients with cancer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A growing body of literature has demonstrated that cancer patients have a higher risk of suicide and cardiovascular mortality compared with the general population, especially immediately after a cancer diagnosis. Using data from the National Cancer Registry in Japan launched in January 2016, we will conduct the first nationwide population-based study in Japan to compare incidence of death by suicide, other externally caused injuries (ECIs) and cardiovascular disease following a cancer diagnosis with that of the general population in Japan. We will also aim to identify the patient subgroups and time periods associated with particularly high risk. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Our study subjects will consist of cancer cases diagnosed between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2016 in Japan and they will be observed until 31 December 2018. We will calculate standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) and excess absolute risks (EARs) for suicide, other ECIs and cardiovascular death compared with the general population in Japan, after adjustment for sex, age and prefecture. SMRs and EARs will be calculated separately in relation to a number of factors: sex; age at diagnosis; time since cancer diagnosis; prefecture of residence at diagnosis; primary tumour site; behaviour code of tumour; extension of tumour; whether definitive surgery of the primary site was performed; and presence/absence of multiple primary tumours. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study protocol was approved by the institutional review board and ethics committee of the National Cancer Center Japan and Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medical Sciences. Abstract
Majority of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are male, and more than 85% of patients with HNC have the habit of smoking and drinking. Due to the specific demographic characteristics, HNC patients are anticipated to have specific coping styles, affecting psychological distress, survival, and quality of life. We explored the subscales of the Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) Scale in male patients with HNC, and then examined the correlation between revised subscales of the MAC scale and anxiety/depression. Participants were 150 male inpatients with HNC, and their demographic and medical data were obtained. Coping style was assessed by MAC scale. Anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Out of 40 items in the original MAC scale, 19 items were excluded by factor analysis, and the remaining 21 items were divided into three factors: Negative Adjustment, Positive Adjustment, and Abandonment. Negative and Positive Adjustments were similar to the copings of mixed gender patients with heterogeneous cancers, and Abandonment was a new subscale specific to male patients with HNC. This subscale had a weak positive correlation with anxiety and depression. Male HNC patients revealed a specific coping style of Abandonment, related with psychological distress. We believe that an understanding of the Abandonment coping style revealed in our study will improve the psychological support offered to male patients with HNC.

Abstract
Demoralization is a form of psychological distress that may cause suicidal ideation. Demoralization syndrome is common among cancer patients, but there has been little empirical study on the association of suicidal ideation with demoralization, depression, and anxiety in this population. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of high demoralization among cancer patients in mainland China and the contribution of high demoralization to suicidal ideation beyond the impact of self-report depression and anxiety. In this cross-sectional study, 303 patients with cancer were invited to complete questionnaires. In total, 14.5% participants reported suicidal ideation and 49.50% high demoralization. Logistic regression analysis identified high demoralization as an independent risk factor for suicidal ideation. Only depression (odds ratio [OR], 6.68) had a stronger influence on suicidal ideation than demoralization (OR, 5.85), and patients with both depression and high demoralization were most likely to experience suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that measures of demoralization can help identify cancer patients at high suicide risk and that such patients require further attention and measures targeting demoralization for suicide prevention.

Abstract
Our purpose is to identify cancer patients at highest risk of suicide compared to the general population and other cancer patients. This is a retrospective, population-based study using nationally representative data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program, 1973-2014. Among 8,651,569 cancer patients, 13,311 committed suicide; the rate of suicide was 28.58/ 100,000-person years, and the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) of suicide was 4.44 (95% CI, 4.33, 4.55). The predominant patients who committed suicide were male (83%) and white (92%). Cancers of the lung, head and neck, testes, bladder, and Hodgkin lymphoma had the highest SMRs ( > 5-10) through the follow up period. Elderly, white, unmarried males with localized disease are at highest risk vs other cancer patients. Among those diagnosed at < 50 years of age, the plurality of suicides is from hematologic and testicular tumors; if > 50, from prostate, lung, and colorectal cancer patients. Cancer patients are at an increased risk of suicide: elderly, white, unmarried males with localized disease are at highest risk vs other cancer patients. Abstract
IMPORTANCE A diagnosis of cancer carries a substantial risk of psychological distress. There has not yet been a national population-based study in England of the risk of suicide after cancer diagnosis. OBJECTIVES To quantify suicide risk in patients with cancers in England and identify risk factors that may assist in needs-based psychological assessment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Population-based study using data from the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service in England linked to death certification data of 4 722 099 individuals (22 million person-years at risk). Patients (aged 18-99 years) with cancer diagnosed from January 1, 1995, to December 31, 2015, with follow-up until August 31, 2017, were included. EXPOSURES Diagnosis of malignant tumors, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES All deaths in patients that received a verdict of suicide or an open verdict at the inquest. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) and absolute excess risks (AERs) were calculated. RESULTS Of the 4 722 099 patients with cancer, 50.3% were men and 49.7% were women. A total of 3 509 392 patients in the cohort (74.3%) were aged 60 years or older when the diagnosis was made. A total of 2491 patients (1719 men and 772 women) with cancer died by suicide, representing 0.08% of all deaths during the follow-up period. The overall SMR for suicide was 1.20 (95% CI, 1.16-1.25) and the AER per 10 000 person-years was 0.19 (95% CI, 0.15-0.23). The risk was highest among patients with mesothelioma, with a 4.51-fold risk corresponding to 4.20 extra deaths per 10 000 person-years. This risk was followed by pancreatic (3.89-fold), esophageal (2.65-fold), lung (2.57-fold), and stomach (2.20-fold) cancer. Suicide risk was highest in the first 6 months following cancer diagnosis (SMR, 2.74; 95% CI, 2.52-2.98). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Despite low absolute numbers, the elevated risk of suicide in patients with certain cancers is a concern, representing potentially preventable deaths. The increased risk in the first 6 months after diagnosis may indicate an unmet need for psychological support. The findings of this study suggest a need for improved psychological support for all patients with cancer, and attention to modifiable risk factors, such as pain, particularly in specific cancer groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have suggested that suicide rates are elevated among cancer patients relative to the general population. In this analysis, we comprehensively evaluated characteristics associated with higher suicide rates among patients with cancers of the digestive system. METHODS Using the United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, we identified all patients diagnosed with digestive system cancers during 2000 to 2014. Patients were classified as having died of suicide if their cause of death in Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results was listed as "suicide and self-inflicted injury." Suicide rates were compared to age-, sex-, and race-adjusted rates in the general population. RESULTS A total of 881 suicides were identified among 856 293 patients diagnosed with digestive system cancers. The suicide rate in this population was 32.8 per 100 000 person-years and was nearly twice that in the general population (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 1.91; 95% CI, 1.79-2.04). Suicide rates were significantly elevated for all cancer sites but were highest for esophageal (SMR = 5.03), pancreatic (SMR = 5.28), stomach (SMR = 2.84), and liver (SMR = 2.14) cancers. Standardized mortality ratios for suicide were highest within the first 5 years of diagnosis and increased with age at diagnosis for all sites except colon and stomach. CONCLUSIONS Patients with cancers of the digestive system have a higher incidence of suicide than the general population. Suicide rates among esophageal and pancreatic cancer patients are more than 5 times general population rates. The involvement of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals may be a critical component of cancer care for these high-risk patient subgroups.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous studies have reported that psychological and social distresses associated with a cancer diagnosis have led to an increase in suicides compared to the general population. We sought to explore lung cancer-associated suicide rates in a large national database compared to the general population, and to the three most prevalent non-skin cancers [breast, prostate and colorectal cancer (CRC)]. METHODS The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database (1973-2013) was retrospectively reviewed to identify cancer-associated suicide deaths in all cancers combined, as well as for each of lung, prostate, breast or CRCs. Suicide incidence and standardised mortality ratio (SMR) were estimated using SEER*Stat-8.3.2 program. Suicidal trends over time and timing from cancer diagnosis to suicide were estimated for each cancer type. RESULTS Among 3,640,229 cancer patients, 6,661 committed suicide. The cancer-associated suicide rate was 27.5/100,000 person years (SMR = 1.57). The highest suicide risk was observed in patients with lung cancer (SMR = 4.17) followed by CRC (SMR = 1.41), breast cancer (SMR = 1.40) and prostate cancer (SMR = 1.18).Median time to suicide was 7 months in lung cancer, 56 months in prostate cancer, 52 months in breast cancer and 37 months in CRC (p < 0.001).We noticed a decreasing trend in suicide SMR over time, which is most notable for lung cancer compared to the other three cancers. In lung cancer, suicide SMR was higher in elderly patients (70-75 years; SMR = 12), males (SMR = 8.8), Asians (SMR = 13.7), widowed patients (SMR = 11.6), undifferentiated tumours (SMR = 8.6), small-cell lung cancer (SMR = 11.2) or metastatic disease (SMR = 13.9) and in patients who refused surgery (SMR = 13). CONCLUSION The cancer-associated suicide rate is nearly twice that of the general population of the United States of America. The suicide risk is highest among the patients with lung cancer, particularly elderly, widowed, male patients and patients with unfavourable tumour characteristics. The identification of high-risk patients is of extreme importance to provide proper psychological assessment, support and counselling to reduce these rates.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) and behaviours are higher among patients with cancer than general population. No systematic review/meta-analysis investigated this topic; therefore, our aim will be to assess the relationship between cancer and SI and behaviours. METHODS We will search PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, PsycINFO and Cochrane Library databases from their inception until 30 June 2018. Case-control and cohort studies focused on the association between cancer (any type) and suicidal outcomes (suicide, suicide attempt and SI) will be included. Two team members will independently: (A) perform the selection of the included studies and data extraction, with the supervision of a third member in case of discrepancies and (B) assess each study with: (1) Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS); (2) Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement; (3) Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). We will conduct a random-effects meta-analysis. Individual and pooled ORs and associated 95% CIs will be calculated as well as between-study heterogeneity. We will examine the potential for publication bias. If possible, we will explore reasons for potential between-study heterogeneity. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study does not require ethical approval. The study will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, will be publicly disseminated and will be the topic of research presentations. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42017072482.
