Abstract
Although Morchella esculenta (L.) Pers. is an edible and nutritious mushroom with significant selenium (Se)-enriched potential, its biological response to selenium stimuli remains unclear. This study explored the effect of selenium on mushroom growth and the global gene expression profiles of M. esculenta. While 5 µg mL-1selenite treatment slightly promoted mycelia growth and mushroom yield, 10 µg mL-1significantly inhibited growth. Based on comparative transcriptome analysis, samples treated with 5 µg mL-1 and 10 µg mL-1 of Se contained 16,061 (452 upregulated and 15,609 downregulated) and 14,155 differentially expressed genes (DEGs; 800 upregulated and 13,355 downregulated), respectively. Moreover, DEGs were mainly enriched in the cell cycle, meiosis, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, spliceosome, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum pathway, and mRNA surveillance pathway in both selenium-treated groups. Among these, MFS substrate transporter and aspartate aminotransferase genes potentially involved in Se metabolism and those linked to redox homeostasis were significantly upregulated, while genes involved in isoflavone biosynthesis and flavonoid metabolism were significantly downregulated. Gene expression levels increased alongside selenite treatment concentration, suggesting that high Se concentrations promoted M. esculenta detoxification. These results can be used to thoroughly explain the potential detoxification and Se enrichment processes in M. esculenta and edible fungi.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION Genome-wide identification revealed 79 BpNAC genes belonging to 16 subfamilies, and their gene structures and evolutionary relationships were characterized. Expression analysis highlighted their importance in plant selenium stress responses. Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera), a deciduous arboreal plant of the Moraceae family, is distinguished by its leaves, which are abundant in proteins, polysaccharides, and flavonoids, positioning it as a novel feedstock. NAC transcription factors, exclusive to plant species, are crucial in regulating growth, development, and response to biotic and abiotic stress. However, extensive characterization of the NAC family within paper mulberry is lacking. In this study, 79 BpNAC genes were identified from the paper mulberry genome, with an uneven distribution across 13 chromosomes. A comprehensive, genome-wide analysis of BpNACs was performed, including investigating gene structures, promoter regions, and chromosomal locations. Phylogenetic tree analysis, alongside comparisons with Arabidopsis thaliana NACs, allowed for categorizing these genes into 16 subfamilies in alignment with gene structure and motif conservation. Collinearity analysis suggested a significant homologous relationship between the NAC genes of paper mulberry and those in Morus notabilis, Ficus hispida, Antiaris toxicaria, and Cannabis sativa. Integrating transcriptome data and Se content revealed that 12 BpNAC genes were associated with selenium biosynthesis. Subsequent RT-qPCR analysis corroborated the correlation between BpNAC59, BpNAC62 with sodium selenate, and BpNAC55 with sodium selenite. Subcellular localization experiments revealed the nuclear functions of BpNAC59 and BpNAC62. This study highlights the potential BpNAC transcription factors involved in selenium metabolism, providing a foundation for strategically breeding selenium-fortified paper mulberry.

Abstract
Unlike terrestrial angiosperm plants, the freshwater aquatic angiosperm duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza) grows directly in water and has distinct responses to heavy-metal stress. Plantlets accumulate metabolites, including lipids and carbohydrates, under heavy-metal stress, but how they balance metabolite levels is unclear, and the gene networks that mediate heavy-metal stress responses remain unknown. Here, we show that heavy-metal stress induced by flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater reduces chlorophyll contents, inhibits growth, reduces membrane lipid biosynthesis, and stimulates membrane lipid degradation in S. polyrhiza, leading to triacylglycerol and carbohydrate accumulation. In FGD wastewater-treated plantlets, the degraded products of monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, primarily polyunsaturated fatty acids (18:3), were incorporated into triacylglycerols. Genes involved in early fatty acid biosynthesis, β-oxidation, and lipid degradation were upregulated while genes involved in cuticular wax biosynthesis were downregulated by treatment. The transcription factor gene WRINKLED3 (SpWRI3) was upregulated in FGD wastewater-treated plantlets, and its ectopic expression increased tolerance to FGD wastewater in transgenic Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Transgenic Arabidopsis plants showed enhanced glutathione and lower malondialdehyde contents under stress, suggesting that SpWRI3 functions in S. polyrhiza tolerance of FGD wastewater-induced heavy-metal stress. These results provide a basis for improving heavy metal-stress tolerance in plants for industrial applications.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) has become a major global concern. Se offers multiple health benefits in humans; however, its inadequate or excessive intake can be harmful. Therefore, determining the factors driving Se abundance and bioavailability in paddy soils is essential to ensure the safety of human Se intake. This study investigated the accumulation, bioavailability, and distribution of Se in 820 paddy soil and rice grain samples from Luxi County, China to assess how soil properties (soil organic matter [SOM], cation exchange capacity [CEC], and pH), geographical factors (parent materials, elevation, and mean annual precipitation [MAP] and temperature [MAT]), and essential micronutrients (copper [Cu], zinc [Zn], and manganese [Mn]) govern Se accumulation and bioavailability in paddy soils. Results showed that the average soil Se content was 0.36 mg kg-1, which was higher than that in China (0.29 mg kg-1). Alternatively, the average rice grain Se content was 0.032 mg kg-1, which was lower than the minimum allowable content in Se-rich rice grains (0.04 mg kg-1). Five studied parent materials all had a significant effect on soil Se content but had little effect on Se bioavailability (p < 0.05). CEC, elevation, and SOM, as well as the soil contents of Cu, Zn, and Mn were positively correlated with soil Se content, but pH, MAP, and MAT were negatively correlated. Correspondingly, Se bioavailability was negatively correlated with SOM and soil Zn content, but positively correlated with MAP and grain contents of Cu, Zn, and Mn. Furthermore, partial least squares path analysis revealed the interactive impacts of the influencing factors on Se accumulation and bioavailability in soils. On this basis, prediction models were established to predict Se accumulation and bioavailability in paddy soils, thereby providing theoretical support for developing efficient control measures to meet Se challenges in agriculture.

Abstract
Introduction Selenium-enriched foxtail millet (Setaria italica) represents a functional cereal with significant health benefits for humans. This study endeavors to examine the impact of foliar application of sodium selenite (Na2SeO4) on foxtail millet, specifically focusing on selenium (Se) accumulation and transportation within various plant tissues. Methods To unravel the molecular mechanisms governing selenium accumulation and transportation in foxtail millet, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of selenium content and transcriptome responses in foxtail millet spikelets across different days (3, 5, 7, and 12) under Na2SeO4 treatment (200 μmol/L). Results Foxtail millet subjected to selenium fertilizer exhibited significantly elevated selenium levels in each tissue compared to the untreated control. Selenate was observed to be transported and accumulated sequentially in the leaf, stem, and spikes. Transcriptome analysis unveiled a substantial upregulation in the transcription levels of genes associated with selenium metabolism and transport, including sulfate, phosphate, and nitrate transporters, ABC transporters, antioxidants, phytohormone signaling, and transcription factors. These genes demonstrated intricate interactions, both synergistic and antagonistic, forming a complex network that regulated selenate transport mechanisms. Gene co-expression network analysis highlighted three transcription factors in the tan module and three transporters in the turquoise module that significantly correlated with selenium accumulation and transportation. Expression of sulfate transporters (SiSULTR1.2b and SiSULTR3.1a), phosphate transporter (PHT1.3), nitrate transporter 1 (NRT1.1B), glutathione S-transferase genes (GSTs), and ABC transporter (ABCC13) increased with SeO4 2- accumulation. Transcription factors MYB, WRKY, and bHLH were also identified as players in selenium accumulation. Conclusion This study provides preliminary insights into the mechanisms of selenium accumulation and transportation in foxtail millet. The findings hold theoretical significance for the cultivation of selenium-enriched foxtail millet.

Abstract
Biofortification aims to increase selenium (Se) concentration and bioavailability in edible parts of crops such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), resulting in increased concentration of Se in plants and/or soil. Higher Se concentrations can disturb protein structure and consequently influence glutathione (GSH) metabolism in plants which can affect antioxidative and other detoxification pathways. The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of five different concentrations of selenate and selenite (0.4, 4, 20, 40 and 400 mg kg-1) on the ascorbate-glutathione cycle in wheat shoots and roots and to determine biochemical and molecular tissue-specific responses. Content of investigated metabolites, activities of detoxification enzymes and expression of their genes depended both on the chemical form and concentration of the applied Se, as well as on the type of plant tissue. The most pronounced changes in the expression level of genes involved in GSH metabolism were visible in wheat shoots at the highest concentrations of both forms of Se. Obtained results can serve as a basis for further research on Se toxicity and detoxification mechanisms in wheat. New insights into the Se impact on GSH metabolism could contribute to the further development of biofortification strategies.

Abstract
Tea plants (Camellia sinensis) show discrepancies in selenium accumulation and transportation, the molecular mechanisms of which are not well understood. Hence, we aimed to conduct a systematic investigation of selenium accumulation and transportation mechanisms in different tea cultivars via transcriptome analysis. The Na2SeO3 and Na2SeO4 treatments improved selenium contents in the roots and leaves of three tea cultivars. The high selenium-enrichment ability (HSe) tea cultivars accumulated higher selenium contents in the leaves than did the low selenium-enrichment ability (LSe) tea cultivars. Transcriptome analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under the Na2SeO3 and Na2SeO4 treatments were enriched in flavonoid biosynthesis in leaves. DEGs under the Na2SeO3 treatment were enriched in glutathione metabolism in the HSe tea cultivar roots compared to those of the LSe tea cultivar. More transporters and transcription factors involved in improving selenium accumulation and transportation were identified in the HSe tea cultivars under the Na2SeO3 treatment than in the Na2SeO4 treatment. In the HSe tea cultivar roots, the expression of sulfate transporter 1;2 (SULTR1;2) and SULTR3;4 increased in response to Na2SeO4 exposure. In contrast, ATP-binding cassette transporter genes (ABCs), glutathione S-transferase genes (GSTs), phosphate transporter 1;3 (PHT1;3), nitrate transporter 1 (NRT1), and 34 transcription factors were upregulated in the presence of Na2SeO3. In the HSe tea cultivar leaves, ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 11 (ABCB11) and 14 transcription factors were upregulated under the Na2SeO3 treatment. Among them, WRKY75 was explored as a potential transcription factor that regulated the accumulation of Na2SeO3 in the roots of HSe tea cultivars. This study preliminary clarified the mechanism of selenium accumulation and transportation in tea cultivars, and the findings have important theoretical significance for the breeding and cultivation of selenium-enriched tea cultivars.

Abstract
Se-biofortified agricultural products receive considerable interest due to the worldwide severity of selenium (Se) deficiency. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), the king of forage, has a large biomass, a high protein content, and a high level of adaptability, making it a good resource for Se biofortification. Analyses of agronomic, quality, physiological, and microstructure results indicated the mechanism of biomass increase and quality development in alfalfa during Se treatment. Se treatment effectively increased Se content, biomass accumulation, and protein levels in alfalfa. The enhancement of antioxidant capacity contributes to the maintenance of low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which, in turn, serves to increase alfalfa's stress resistance and the stability of its intracellular environment. An increase in the rate of photosynthesis contributes to the accumulation of biomass in alfalfa. To conduct a more comprehensive investigation of the regulatory networks induced by Se treatment, the transcriptome sequencing of non-coding RNA (ncRNA) was employed to compare 100 mg/kg Se treatment and control groups. The analysis identified 1,414, 62, and 5 genes as DE-long non-coding RNAs (DE-lncRNA), DE-microRNAs (DE-miRNA), and DE-circular RNA (DE-circRNA), respectively. The function of miRNA-related regulatory networks during Se biofortification in alfalfa was investigated. Subsequent enrichment analysis revealed significant involvement of transcription factors, DNA replication and repair mechanisms, photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and protein processing. The antioxidant capacity and protein accumulation of alfalfa were regulated by the modulation of signal transduction, the glyoxalase pathway, proteostasis, and circRNA/lncRNA-related regulatory networks. The findings offer new perspectives on the regulatory mechanisms of Se in plant growth, biomass accumulation, and stress responses, and propose potential strategies for enhancing its utilization in the agricultural sector.

Abstract
Tea, as a global nonalcoholic beverage, is widely consumed due to its economic, health and cultural importance. Polyploids have the ability to solve the problems of low yield, cold resistance and insect resistance in tea tree varieties. However, the response mechanism to aluminum and heavy metal remains unclear. In this study, the content of Al, Cu and Cd were measured in the leaves and roots of 'Qianmei 419' and 'Qianfu 4', respectively. The content of Al, Cd and Cu in the roots of the 'Qianmei 419' tea variety were significantly higher than in 'Qianfu 4' roots. Only the content of Cu in the leaves of the 'Qianmei 419' tea variety was significantly higher than that in the roots of the 'Qianfu 4' tea variety. Moreover, we found that the content of Al, Cu and Cd in the soil around the root of 'Qianfu 4' were higher than in the soil around the root of 'Qianmei 419'. RNA-seq was performed to identify the DEGs involved in the accumulation of Al, Cu and Cd between 'Qianmei 419' and 'Qianfu 4'. A total of 23,813 DEGs were identified in the triploid tea variety, including 16,459 upregulated DEGs and 7354 downregulated DEGs. Among them, by analyzing the expression levels of some metal transporter genes, it was found that most of the metal transporter genes were downregulated in the triploid tea plants. In short, through the analysis of transcriptome data and metal content, it was found that changes in metal transporter gene expression affect the accumulation of metals in tea plants. These results provide candidate genes to enhance multi-metal tolerance through genetic engineering technology.

Abstract
Selenium is a micronutrient with a wide range of functions in animals, including humans, and in microorganisms such as microalgae. However, its role in plant metabolism remains ambiguous. Recent studies of Se supplementation showed that not only does it increase the content of the element itself, but also affects the accumulation of secondary metabolites in plants. The purpose of this review is to analyze and summarize the available data on the place of selenium in the secondary metabolism of plants and its effect on the accumulation of some plant metabolites (S- and N-containing secondary metabolites, terpenes, and phenolic compounds). In addition, possible molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways underlying these effects are discussed. It should be noted that available data on the effect of Se on the accumulation of secondary metabolites are inconsistent and contradictory. According to some studies, selenium has a positive effect on the accumulation of certain metabolites, while other similar studies show a negative effect or no effect at all. The following aspects were identified as possible ways of regulating plant secondary metabolism by Se-supplementation: changes occurring in primary S/N metabolism, hormonal regulation, redox metabolism, as well as at the transcriptomic level of secondary metabolite biosynthesis. In all likelihood, the confusion in the results can be explained by other, more complex regulatory mechanisms in which selenium is involved and which affect the production of metabolites. Further study on the involvement of various forms of selenium in metabolic and signaling pathways is crucial for a deeper understanding of its role in growth, development, and health of plants, as well as the regulatory mechanisms behind them.

Abstract
Foliar Se (IV) application at 100 mg/kg can act as a positive bio-stimulator of redox, photosynthesis, and nutrient metabolism in alfalfa via phenotypes, nutritional compositions, biochemistry, combined with transcriptome analysis. Selenium (Se) is an essential element for mammals, and plants are the primary source of dietary Se. However, Se usually has dual (beneficial/toxic) effects on the plant itself. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is one of the most important forage resources in the world due to its high nutritive value. In this study, we have investigated the effects of sodium selenite (Se (IV)) (0, 100, 200, 300, and 500 mg/kg) on eco-physiological, biochemical, and transcriptional mechanisms in alfalfa. The phenotypic and nutritional composition alterations revealed that lower Se (IV) (100 mg/kg) levels positively affected alfalfa; it enhanced the antioxidant activity, which may contribute to redox homeostasis and chloroplast function. At 100 mg/kg Se (IV) concentration, the H2O2, and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents decreased by 36.72% and 22.62%, respectively, whereas the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) increased by 31.10%. Se supplementation at 100 mg/kg increased the plant pigments contents, the light-harvesting capacity of PSII (Fv/Fm) and PSI (ΔP700max), and the carbon fixation efficiency, which was demonstrated by enhanced photosynthesis (37.6%). Furthermore, alfalfa shifted carbon flux to protein synthesis to improve quality at 100 mg/kg of Se (IV) by upregulating carbohydrate and amino acid metabolic genes. On the contrary, at 500 mg/kg, Se (IV) became toxic. Higher Se (IV) disordered the plant antioxidant system, increasing H2O2 and MDA by 14.2 and 4.3%, respectively. Moreover, photosynthesis was inhibited by 20.2%, and more structural substances, such as lignin, were synthesized. These results strongly suggest that Se (IV) at a concentration of 100 mg/kg act as the positive bio-stimulator of redox metabolism, photosynthesis, and nutrient in alfalfa.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals, and it plays an important role in immune regulation and disease prevention. Tea is one of the top three beverages in the world, and it contains active ingredients such as polyphenols, theanine, flavonoids, and volatile substances, which have important health benefits. The tea tree has suitable Se aggregation ability, which can absorb inorganic Se and transform it into safe and effective organic Se through absorption by the human body, thereby improving human immunity and preventing the occurrence of many diseases. Recent studies have proven that 50~100.0 mg/L exogenous Se can promote photosynthesis and absorption of mineral elements in tea trees and increase their biomass. The content of total Se and organic selenides in tea leaves significantly increases and promotes the accumulation of polyphenols, theanine, flavonoids, and volatile secondary metabolites, thereby improving the nutritional quality of tea leaves. This paper summarizes previous research on the effects of exogenous Se treatment on the growth and quality of tea trees to provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the germplasm selection and exploitation of Se-rich tea.

Abstract
Pesticides are widely used in melon production causing safety issues around the consumption of melon and increasing pathogen and insect tolerance to pesticides. This study investigated whether a nano-selenium (Nano-Se) spray treatment can improve resistance to biological stress in melon plants, reducing the need for pesticides, and how this mechanism is activated. To achieve this, we examine the ultrastructure and physio-biochemical responses of two melon cultivars after foliar spraying with Nano-Se. Nano-Se treatment reduced plastoglobulins in leaf mesophyll cells, thylakoid films were left intact, and compound starch granules increased. Nano-Se treatment also increased root mitochondria and left nucleoli intact. Nano-Se treatment enhanced ascorbate peroxidase, peroxidase, phenylalanine ammonia lyase, β-1,3-glucanase, chitinase activities and their mRNA levels in treated melon plants compared to control plants (without Nano-Se treatments). Exogenous application of Nano-Se improved fructose, glucose, galactitol, stachyose, lactic acid, tartaric acid, fumaric acid, malic acid and succinic acid in treated plants compared to control plants. In addition, Nano-Se treatment enhanced cucurbitacin B and up-regulated eight cucurbitacin B synthesis-related genes. We conclude that Nano-Se treatment of melon plants triggered antioxidant capacity, photosynthesis, organic acids, and up-regulated cucurbitacin B synthesis-related genes, which plays a comprehensive role in stress resistance in melon plants.

Abstract
As a functional beverage, selenium (Se)-enriched green tea (Se-GT) has gained increasing popularity for its superior properties in promoting health. In this study, we compared the brewing characteristics, in vitro digestion profiles, and protective effects on neurotoxicity induced through the amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide of two typical Se-GTs (Enshi Yulu (ESYL) and Ziyang Maojian (ZYMJ), representing the typical low-Se green tea and high-Se green tea, respectively). ESYL and ZYMJ showed similar chemical component leaching properties with the different brewing methods, and the optimized brewing conditions were 5 min, 90 °C, 50 mL/g, and first brewing. The antioxidant activities of the tea infusions had the strongest positive correlation with the tea polyphenols among all of the leaching substances. The tea infusions of ESYL and ZYMJ showed similar digestive behaviors, and the tea polyphenols in the tea infusions were almost totally degraded or transferred after 150 min of dynamic digestion. Studies conducted in a cell model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) showed that the extract from the high-Se green tea was more effective for neuroprotection compared with the low-Se green tea. Overall, our results revealed the best brewing conditions and digestion behaviors of Se-GT and the great potential of Se-GT or Se-enriched green extract (Se-GTE) to be used as promising AD-preventive beverages or food ingredients.

Abstract
Tea (Camelliasinensis) is the world’s most widely consumed non-alcoholic beverage with essential economic and health benefits since it is an excellent source of polyphenols, catechins, amino acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins, and polysaccharides. The aim of this review is to summarize the main secondary metabolites in tea plants, and the content and distribution of these compounds in six different types of tea and different organs of tea plant were further investigated. The application of these secondary metabolites on food processing, cosmetics industry, and pharmaceutical industry was reviewed in this study. With the rapid advancements in biotechnology and sequencing technology, omics analyses, including genome, transcriptome, and metabolome, were widely used to detect the main secondary metabolites and their molecular regulatory mechanisms in tea plants. Numerous functional genes and regulatory factors have been discovered, studied, and applied to improve tea plants. Research advances, including secondary metabolites, applications, omics research, and functional gene mining, are comprehensively reviewed here. Further exploration and application trends are briefly described. This review provides a reference for basic and applied research on tea plants.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element for humans and obtained from diary diets. The consumption of selenium-rich agricultural food is an efficient way to obtain selenium, but the quality and safety of selenium-rich agro-food are always affected by their associated heavy metals, even poses a potential threaten to human health. In this research, a sampling survey of heavy metals contents in selenium-rich rice was conducted, 182 sets of selenium-rich rice samples were collected from five selenium-rich rice-producing areas of China, and the accumulation of selenium and cadmium were found to be associated in rice and soil. Subsequently, a pot experiment was performed in the greenhouse via treating the soil samples with 12 different concentrations of selenium and heavy metals, and the contents of selenium and cadmium in rice grain were confirmed to be significantly associated. Moreover, transcriptome analysis revealed that the up-regulation of transporter-coding may promote the absorption of selenium and cadmium. The expression of antioxidant-coding genes and cadmium chelator transporter coding-genes was up-regulated to reduce the toxicity of cadmium. Meanwhile, the up-regulation of key genes of the ascorbic acid-glutathione metabolic pathway were responsible for the association between selenium and cadmium in Se-rich rice. Our work suggested the correlation between selenium and cadmium accumulation in selenium-rich rice, clarified their accumulation mechanism, provides a direction for the scientific production of selenium-rich agro-foods.

Abstract
Certain tea plants (Camellia sinensis) have the ability to accumulate selenium. In plants, the predominant forms of bioavailable Se are selenite (SeO3 2-) and selenate (SeO4 2-). We applied transcriptomics and proteomics to hydroponically grown plants treated with selenite or selenate for 48 h in the attempt to elucidate the selenium absorption and assimilation mechanisms in tea. A total of 1,844 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 691 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were obtained by comparing the Na2SeO3 and Na2SeO4 treatments against the control. A GO analysis showed that the genes related to amino acid and protein metabolism and redox reaction were strongly upregulated in the plants under the Na2SeO3 treatment. A KEGG pathway analysis revealed that numerous genes involved in amino acid and glutathione metabolism were upregulated, genes and proteins associated with glutathione metabolism and ubiquinone and terpenoid-quinone biosynthesis were highly expressed. Genes participating in DNA and RNA metabolism were identified and proteins related to glutathione metabolism were detected in tea plants supplemented with Na2SeO4. ABC, nitrate and sugar transporter genes were differentially expressed in response to selenite and selenate. Phosphate transporter (PHT3;1a, PHT1;3b, and PHT1;8) and aquaporin (NIP2;1) genes were upregulated in the presence of selenite. Sulfate transporter (SULTR1;1 and SULTR2;1) expression increased in response to selenate exposure. The results of the present study have clarified Se absorption and metabolism in tea plants, and play an important theoretical reference significance for the breeding and cultivation of selenium-enriched tea varieties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although selenium (Se) plays important roles in scavenging free radicals, alleviating oxidative stresses, and strengthening immune system, the knowledge about Se responses in bread wheat is still limited. In order to clarify the molecular mechanism of Se responses in bread wheat, 2-week-old wheat seedlings of cultivar 'Jimai22' treated with 10 μM disodium selenate (Na2SeO4) for 0, 3, and 24 h were collected and analyzed by transcriptional sequencing and tandem mass tag-based (TMT) quantitative proteomics. RESULTS At least 11,656 proteins and 133,911 genes were identified, and proteins including ATP sulfurylase (APS), cysteine synthase (CS), SeCys lyase, sulfate transporters, glutathione S-transferase (GSTs), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutaredoxins (GRXs), superoxide dismutases (SODs), catalases (CATs), heat shock proteins (HSPs), UDP-glycose flavonoid glycosyltransferases (UFGTs), sucrose-6-phosphate hydrolases (Suc-6-PHs), archaeal phosphoglucose isomerases (APGIs), malate synthases (MSs), and endo-1,4-beta-xylanase (Xyn) in Se accumulation, ROS scavenging, secondary metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism were significantly differently expressed. CONCLUSIONS This is the first complementary analyses of the transcriptome and proteome related with selenium responses in bread wheat. Our work enhances the understanding about the molecular mechanism of selenium responses in bread wheat.

Abstract
In view of damaging impacts of cadmium (Cd) toxicity on various vital processes of plants and strategies for alleviating these effects, selenium (Se) application has been recently achieved great attention. In addition, chitosan (CS) and its nano-form, besides many positive effects on plants, could be considered as an excellent adsorption matrix and a carrier for a wide range of materials like Se with various applications in agricultural sector. For that point, the combination nano-form of Se and CS (CS-Se NPs), using CS as a carrier and control releaser for Se, could enhance Se efficiency particularly at lower doses under stress conditions. Therefore, Se (10 mg L-1), CS (0.1%) and CS-Se NPs (in two concentrations; 5 and 10 mg L-1) were applied on Moldavian balm plant under 0, 2.5 and 5 mg kg-1 Cd-stress conditions. The results demonstrated that mostly Se and CS-Se NPs treatments could lessen negative effects of Cd-stress conditions through enhancing agronomic traits, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and SPAD, proline, phenols, antioxidant enzymes activities and some dominant constituents of essential oils and decreasing MDA and H2O2. These encouraging impacts were more significant at lower dose of CS-Se NPs (5 mg L-1) introducing it as the best treatment to ameliorate Moldavian balm performance under Cd-stress conditions. In conclusion, CS-Se NPs could be considered as a supportive approach in plant production mainly under different heavy metal stressful conditions and probably a potential plant growth promoting and stress protecting agent with new outlooks for applying in agricultural sector.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential element for human health and an important nutrient for plant growth. Selenite is the main form of Se available to plants in acidic soils. Previous studies have shown that phosphate transporters (PTHs) participate in selenite uptake in plants. Research on the PHT gene family is therefore vital for production of Se-rich products. Here, 23 CsPHT genes were identified in the tea (Camellia sinensis) genome and renamed based on homology with AtPHT genes in Arabidopsis thaliana. The CsPHT genes were divided into four subfamilies: PHT1, PHT3, PHT4, and PHO, containing nine, three, six, and five genes, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that fewer duplication events occurred in tea plants than in A. thaliana, rice, apple, and poplar. Genes in the same subfamily tended to share similar gene structures, conserved motifs, and potential functions. CsPHT genes were differentially expressed in various tissues and in roots under different Se levels, suggesting key roles in selenite uptake, translocation, and homeostasis. The results illuminate the contributions of CsPHT genes to selenite supply in tea plants, and lay a foundation for follow-up studies on their potential functions in this plant species.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is a trace mineral element in soils that can be beneficial to plants in small amounts. Although maize is among the most economically important crops, there are few reports on the effects of Se on maize seedling growth at the molecular level. In this study, the growth of maize seedlings treated with different concentrations of Na2SeO3 was investigated, and the physiological characteristics were measured. Compared with the control, a low Se concentration promoted seedling growth, whereas a high Se concentration inhibited it. To illustrate the transcriptional effects of Se on maize seedling growth, samples from control plants and those treated with low or high concentrations of Se were subjected to RNA sequencing. The differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis revealed that there were 239 upregulated and 106 downregulated genes in the low Se treatment groups, while there were 845 upregulated and 1,686 downregulated DEGs in the high Se treatment groups. Both the Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotation analyses showed a low concentration of the Se-stimulated expression of "DNA replication" and "glutathione (GSH) metabolism"-related genes. A high concentration of Se repressed the expression of auxin signal transduction and lignin biosynthesis-related genes. The real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) results showed that in the low Se treatment, "auxin signal transduction," "DNA replication," and lignin biosynthesis-related genes were upregulated 1.4- to 57.68-fold compared to the control, while, in the high Se concentration treatment, auxin signal transduction and lignin biosynthesis-related genes were downregulated 1.6- to 16.23-fold compared to the control. Based on these transcriptional differences and qRT-PCR validation, it was found that a low dosage of Se may promote maize seedling growth but becomes inhibitory to growth at higher concentrations. This study lays a foundation for the mechanisms underlying the effects of Se on maize seedling growth.

Abstract
Tea plants (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) can hyperaccumulate fluoride (F). The accumulation of F in tea leaves may induce serious health problems in tea consumers. It has been reported that selenium (Se) could reduce the accumulation of heavy metals in plants. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether exogenous Se could reduce F accumulation in tea plant. The results showed that Se treatment could decrease F content in tea leaves, increase F accumulation in roots, decrease the proportion of water-soluble F in tea leaves and increase the Se content. Low F levels promoted the accumulation of Se in tea plants. Se treatment could modulate F-induced oxidative injury by decreasing malondialdehyde level and increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase. Moreover, Se inhibited F-induced increase in leaf iron, calcium, aluminum, leaf and root magnesium and lead contents. These results showed that Se application could decrease F content and increase Se content in tea leaves, which may be served as a novel strategy for production of healthy tea.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore whether supplementation of the culture medium with selenium nanoparticles (nSe) can influence growth, biochemistry, expression of transcription factors, and epigenetic DNA methylation in Capsicum annuum. The seeds were grown in hormone-free MS culture medium supplemented with nSe (0, 0.5, 1, 10, and 30 mgL-1) or corresponding doses of bulk type selenate (BSe). Incorporation of nSe into the medium caused variations in morphology and growth in a manner dependent on the dose and Se type. The low doses of nSe displayed growth-promoting effects, whereas nSe at 10 and 30 mgL-1 were associated with severe toxicity and abnormality in leaf and root development. MSAP analysis confirmed the substantial variation in cytosine DNA methylation in response to the toxic dose of nSe exhibiting epigenetic modification. The nSe toxicity was associated with DNA hyper-methylations. The nSe treatments transcriptionally upregulated the bZIP1 transcription factor by an average of 3.5 folds. With a similar trend, the upregulation (mean = 9.8 folds) in the expression of the WRKY1 transcription factor resulted from the nSe application. The nSe0.5 or nSe1 treatments resulted in a significant induction (mean = 48%) in nitrate reductase activity. A high dose of nSe led to an increase in proline concentration. The nSe treatments were also associated with modifications in activities of peroxidase and catalase enzymes. Besides, the nSe utilization increased the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase enzyme (mean = 76%) and concentrations of soluble phenols (mean = 51%). The toxic dose of nSe also caused abnormalities in the structure of the stem apical meristem. The nSe toxicity was also associated with inhibition in the differentiation of xylem tissues. These findings provide novel insights into the nSe-associated molecular variations in conferring the modified growth, anatomy, and metabolism.

Abstract
Se-enriched green tea, with an increasing consumption, is the shoot of tea plants grown naturally in a seleniferous region. A label-free proteomic strategy based on ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole Orbitrap was applied to characterize and distinguish the difference between the Se-enriched and normal green tea with a total of 283 proteins identified and 264 proteins quantified, in which 96 proteins were observed different. The expressions of 10 proteins were upregulated and 40 proteins were downregulated (p < 0.05) in Se-enriched samples. Gene ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis results indicated that these differentially expressed proteins significantly interacted and were involved in secondary metabolites and inflammatory response biological processes. Furthermore, the expression of methyl-jasmonate- and ethylene-related genes changed significantly in Se-enriched green tea, and catalase proteins were employed as the center of the pathway that changed significantly in the PPI network. These results associating with the current knowledge of selenium in soil-plant cycling revealed that organic selenium was synthesized in green tea, which provided novel information on Se assimilation in Camellia sinensis and improved the understanding of Se-enriched green tea as a possible ideal selenium supplement in daily life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Camellia sinensis 'Huangjinju' is an albino tea variety developed recently in China. Young leaves of 'Huangjinju' demonstrate bright yellow when cultivated under natural sunlight, but regreens under reduced light intensity. To elucidate the physiological and molecular mechanisms of this light-sensitive albinism, we compared leaf pigmentation, metabolites, cellular ultrastructure and transcriptome between plants cultured under natural sunlight and shade. RESULTS Shading treatment doubled the chlorophyll concentration and regreened albino leaves; carotenoid also increased by 30%. Electron microscopy analyses showed that chloroplast not only increased in number but also in size with a complete set of components. In addition, regreened leaves also had a significantly higher concentration of polyphenols and catechins than albino leaves. At transcriptomic level, a total of 507 genes were differentially expressed in response to light condition changes. The most enriched pathways include light harvest protein complex, response to stimuli, oxidation-reduction process, generation of precursor metabolites and energy response. CONCLUSION The integrated strategy in this study allows a mechanistic understanding of leaf albinism in light-sensitive tea plants and suggested the regulation of gene networks involved in pigmentation and protein processing. Results from this study provide valuable information to this area and can benefit the domestication and artificial breeding to develop new albino tea varieties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome, a group of factors that increase the risk of health problems, is becoming increasingly common. Strategies to prevent metabolic syndrome have received substantial attention. Black tea consumption and selenium (Se) intake have been reported to be associated negatively with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. We therefore sought to investigate whether Se-rich black tea might have a stronger effect than Se-deficient black tea in the prevention of metabolic syndrome. RESULTS Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups and fed a normal rodent diet, high-fat diet, high-fat diet containing 3% Se-rich black tea, or a high-fat diet containing 3% Se-deficient black tea for 4 weeks. Blood and tissue samples were tested at the end of the experiment. The results suggested that both types of black tea ameliorated high-fat diet-induced body-weight gain, lowered serum triglycerides and attenuated intestinal barrier dysfunction. Selenium-rich black tea showed stronger activity in decreasing fasting serum glucose and increasing insulin sensitivity, as well as stronger hepatoprotection, owing to higher total antioxidant capacity and activated hepatic antioxidant enzymes. However, it did not exhibit better effects in preventing fat accumulation. The different effects of Se-rich and Se-deficient black tea on the gut microbiota might have been partially responsible for the results. CONCLUSION Compared with Se-deficient black tea, Se-rich black tea displayed stronger activity in preventing high-fat diet-induced hyperglycemia and liver damage but was not better at preventing fat accumulation and attenuating dysbiosis. More experiments are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms further. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Presently, concern regarding the effects of selenium (Se) on the environment and organisms worldwide is increasing. Too much Se in the soil is harmful to plants. In this study, Illumina RNA sequencing and the untargeted metabolome of control and Se-treated celery seedlings were analyzed. In total, 297,911,046 clean reads were obtained and assembled into 150,218 transcripts (50,876 unigenes). A total of 36,287 unigenes were annotated using different databases. Additionally, 8,907 differentially expressed genes, including 5,319 up- and 3,588 downregulated genes, were identified between mock and Se-treated plants. “Phenylpropanoid biosynthesis” was the most enriched KEGG pathway. A total of 24 sulfur and selenocompound metabolic unigenes were differentially expressed. Furthermore, 1,774 metabolites and 237 significant differentially accumulated metabolites were identified using the untargeted metabolomic approach. We conducted correlation analyses of enriched KEGG pathways of differentially expressed genes and accumulated metabolites. Our findings suggested that candidate genes and metabolites involved in important biological pathways may regulate Se tolerance in celery. The results increase our understanding of the molecular mechanism responsible for celery’s adaptation to Se stress.

Abstract
The metalloid element, selenium (Se) is in many ways special and perhaps because of this its research in human and plant systems is of great interest. Despite its non-essentiality, higher plants take it up and metabolize it via sulfur pathways, but higher amounts of Se cause toxic symptoms in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms of selenium phytotoxicity have been only partly revealed; the data obtained so far point out that Se toxicity targets the plant proteome. Besides seleno- and oxyproteins, nitroproteins are also formed due to Se stress. In order to minimize proteomic damages induced by Se, certain plants are able to redirect selenocysteine away from protein synthesis thus preventing Se-protein formation. Additionally, the damaged or malformed selenoproteins, oxyproteins and nitroproteins may be removed by proteasomes. Based on the literature this review sets Se toxicity mechanisms into a new concept and it draws attention to the importance of Se-induced protein-level changes.
