Abstract
Background Globally, every year, 20 million neonates are born with weights below 2500 g and are considered low birth weight (LBW). About 90% of these births occur in low- and middle-income countries. Information regarding the geographical variation, socioeconomic inequalities of LBW neonates, and the relationship between maternal inadequate dietary diversity and LBW is limited in rural areas of Bangladesh. We aimed to explore the geographical disparities and socioeconomic inequalities in the prevalence of LBW and its association with inadequate maternal dietary diversity. Methods We extracted data from a large-scale evaluation programme conducted as a part of the maternal infant and young child nutrition phase two in Bangladesh, implemented by BRAC. We used the concentration index (CIX) to measure the socioeconomic inequalities of LBW. We performed a cluster-adjusted multiple logistic regression analysis to determine the association between LBW and maternal dietary diversity. Results A total of 4651 children aged <5 years with their mother's information were included. The overall prevalence of LBW was 13.5%. About 16% of mothers living in the poorest wealth quintile gave birth to LBW babies, whereas 10% of mothers living in the richest households gave birth to LBW babies. The CIX exhibited LBW babies were more prevalent among the socioeconomically worst-off (poorest) group (CIX = -0.08), indicating mothers of the poorest households are vulnerable to giving birth to normal-weight babies. An adjusted multiple logistic regression model indicated that mothers with inadequate dietary diversity had higher odds (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.27; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.04, 1.54) of giving birth to LBW babies. Notably, in the interaction of mothers' age and dietary diversity, we found that adolescent mothers (aged ≤ 19 years) with inadequate dietary diversity had 2.56 times (AOR = 2.56; 95% CI = 1.14, 5.76) higher odds of giving birth to LBW babies compared to adult mothers (aged >19 years) who consumed diversified foods. Conclusions Intervention strategies for reducing LBW prevalence should target the poorest households. Also, interventions for improving the dietary diversity of adolescent pregnant mothers are expected to reduce the number of LBW babies from the rural areas of Bangladesh.

Abstract
Background Maternal undernutrition negatively influences both maternal and child health, as well as economic and social development. Limited research has been conducted on both the nutritional status and dietary diversity score among lactating mothers. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the magnitudes of undernutrition and dietary diversity scores and their associated factors among lactating mothers in Bahir Dar City, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2021. Systematic random sampling and interview-administered questionnaires were employed. Dietary diversity score and nutritional status were measured using a 24-h recall and body mass index (BMI), respectively. Data entry and analysis were performed using EpiData version 3.02 and SPSS version 24 software, respectively. Both the bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were performed, and the strength of association was measured in terms of odds ratio. Results The prevalence of undernutrition and low dietary diversity scores among respondents were 13.5% (95% CI; 10.4, 17.2) and 64.8% (95% CI, 60.0, 69.4), respectively. The significant factors for undernutrition were being young [AOR = 2.30, 95% CI (1.09, 5.43)], having low dietary diversity score [AOR = 2.26, 95% CI (1.01,5.10)], having poor nutritional knowledge [AOR = 2.56, 95% CI (1.03, 6.51)], meal frequency less or equal to 3 times per day [AOR = 4.06, 95% CI (0.71, 9.65)], educational status being primary school [AOR = 3.20, 95% CI (1.01, 9.11)], and educational status of husband being secondary school [AOR = 2.28, 95% CI (1.25, 8.53)]. Age between 20 and 30 years [AOR = 1.46, 95% CI (1.01, 2.48)], being food insecure [AOR = 3.41, 95% CI (1.21, 9.63)], and being poorest [AOR = 2.31, 95% CI (1.02, 5.32)] were associated with the dietary diversity score. Conclusion A high prevalence of undernutrition and low dietary diversity scores were recorded in the current study area. Age, educational status of lactating mothers and their husbands, nutritional knowledge, dietary diversity, and meal frequency were significant factors associated with undernutrition. Age, food security, and wealth index were associated with the dietary diversity score.

Abstract
There has been limited research and understanding of the water quality in developing countries. Fresh produce consumed raw is nutrient-dense but is more susceptible to causing foodborne illness when contaminated water is used in production and consumption. There have been increasing reported incidences of foodborne outbreaks in Nepal linked to fresh produce contamination. However, water used in washing fresh produce by consumers and water used by growers or vendors is rarely tested. This research examines the source water used by consumers and growers in fresh produce systems in Nepal. To examine Escherichia coli (E. coli) detection as an indicator of contamination risk in water, we selected five major metropolitan cities for consumer households and ten districts representing commercial growers of vegetable growing areas of all seven provinces of Nepal. Altogether, we collected 394 water samples from randomly selected individual households: 156 from consumer households and 238 from growers or vendors. Results suggest that 59% of the water used in fresh produce systems is contaminated with E. coli in Nepal. On the water source used by consumers to wash fresh produce before consumption, we found that the dominant sources are the stored water in tanks or containers (46%) and municipal or communal supply water (39%)-which have E. coli prevalence rate of 66% and 57%, respectively. On the dominant sources of water used in fresh produce by growers or vendors, we found up to 88% of E. coli prevalence in the water they use. We also discussed the location or regional differences in contamination risks. This nationally represented study has implications for intervention policies and programs for safer food production and consumption practices in countries like Nepal where food safety is an emerging priority.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food insecurity is a major predicament for rural populations, especially mothers and children, whose livelihoods are often dependent on rain-fed agriculture. Indigenous foods have the potential of mitigating food insecurity as they can thrive in poor agro-ecological conditions. However, the associations between indigenous food production and food security status of mothers and children drawn from rural contexts has not been expansively assessed. Food insecurity evident by high food poverty rates remain high in Kisumu County due to over-reliance on food imports from other counties. The objective of the study was to assess seasonality in associations between production of selected indigenous foods (kidney beans, soya beans, millet, cassava, sweet potatoes, groundnuts, green grams, cow peas, amaranth leaves, spider plant leaves, black night shade leaves, mangoes, guavas, lime, and tamarind) and food security status of mothers and children during planting and harvesting seasons. METHODS We used a longitudinal study design adopting both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A structured questionnaire assessed production of selected indigenous foods in the sampled households, Household Food Insecurity Access Scale for mother's food security status and Prevalence of Underweight for children's food security status. Ordinal logistic regression was used to derive odds ratio (OR), which assessed strength of associations between dependent variables (mother's and children's food security status) and independent variables (production of selected indigenous foods). Significance was determined at α ≤ 0.05. RESULTS Results demonstrated that during planting season, production of kidney beans decreased the odds of mothers being severely food insecure by 53% (OR = 0.469, 95% CI = 0.228-0.964, p = 0.039). In the same season, sorghum production demonstrated 3.5 times increase in odds of children being severely food insecure (OR = 3.498, 95% CI = 1.454-8.418, p = 0.005). During harvesting season, production of kidney beans was associated with a 62% reduction in the odds of children being severely food insecure (OR = 0.379, 95% CI = 0.190-0.754, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Production of some of the selected indigenous foods demonstrated significant odds of predicting mother's and children's food security status across both study seasons. An intervention-based study approach that would best establish causal associations of indigenous food production and food security status is recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Breastfeeding is an energetically costly and intense form of human parental investment, providing sole-source nutrition in early infancy and bioactive components, including immune factors. Given the energetic cost of lactation, milk factors may be subject to tradeoffs, and variation in concentrations have been explored utilizing the Trivers-Willard hypothesis. As human milk immune factors are critical to developing immune system and protect infants against pathogens, we tested whether concentrations of milk immune factors (IgA, IgM, IgG, EGF, TGFβ2, and IL-10) vary in response to infant sex and maternal condition (proxied by maternal diet diversity [DD] and body mass index [BMI]) as posited in the Trivers-Willard hypothesis and consider the application of the hypothesis to milk composition. METHODS We analyzed concentrations of immune factors in 358 milk samples collected from women residing in 10 international sites using linear mixed-effects models to test for an interaction between maternal condition, including population as a random effect and infant age and maternal age as fixed effects. RESULTS IgG concentrations were significantly lower in milk produced by women consuming diets with low diversity with male infants than those with female infants. No other significant associations were identified. CONCLUSIONS IgG concentrations were related to infant sex and maternal diet diversity, providing minimal support for the hypothesis. Given the lack of associations across other select immune factors, results suggest that the Trivers-Willard hypothesis may not be broadly applied to human milk immune factors as a measure of maternal investment, which are likely buffered against perturbations in maternal condition.

Abstract
This study analyzed the role of women's empowerment in diversifying the diet of households through their own production. Developed from empowerment and food security theories, this study constructed measures from the household dietary diversity score (HDDS) and Women's Empowerment Index (WEI). The study focused on poverty-stricken regions in China and conducted a thematic questionnaire-based household survey on gender and food consumption in 2021. Based on micro-level evidence from 1199 rural households, this research found a low score of women's empowerment and an average WEI of 0.689; the status of diet diversity, measured by the HDDS, varied by income and social class; and the average rate was low. Agricultural production diversity and women's empowerment are positively associated with diet diversity. There is strong evidence that women's employment mitigates the side effects of decreasing production diversity on households' diet security. As a result, women's empowerment can potentially mitigate the adverse consequences of low agricultural diversification in household diet quality in less developed areas. This study provides evidence for repurposing food and agricultural policies toward healthy diets and gender-responsive agrifood systems.

Abstract
The shortage of diversified diets in lactating postpartum mothers is a severe problem in developing countries. The promotion of diverse diets is important to improving micronutrient nourishment and adequate energy intake for lactating mothers. To date, there is limited evidence regarding inadequate dietary diversity practices among lactating postpartum mothers in Gambella region. The study is aimed to determine inadequate dietary diversity practice and associated factors among lactating postpartum mothers in Gambella city, southwest Ethiopia. Mixed methods were employed on 407 randomly selected lactating postpartum mothers and 15 purposively selected key informants from February 28 to March 24, 2021. A pre-tested questionnaire and interview guide were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21 software. Binary logistic regression models were used to determine the associated factors of dietary diversity. Qualitative data were analyzed manually through a thematic approach. The prevalence of inadequate dietary diversity practice was 60.2%. Having no education (AOR = 3.74, 95% CI: 1.18, 11.88), employed women(AOR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.75), meal frequency < 3 meals (AOR = 2.92, 95% CI: 1.04, 8.71), time taken to market > 30 min (AOR = 4.20, 95% CI: 2.01, 8.76), not received nutrition education (AOR = 2.0, 95% CI:1.09, 3.68), having home gardening (AOR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.57) and having big animals (AOR = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.29) were significant factors of inadequate dietary diversity practice. Diet habits, food taboos, low social status of women in ownership of household assets, low family support, order of feeding, child preference for resource distribution in a polygamous family, and health care provider's advice were the main mentioned reasons for inadequate dietary diversity practices. The prevalence of inadequate dietary diversity practices were high compared to previous studies. Having no education, employed women, meal frequency < 3 meals, time taken to market > 30 min, not receiving nutrition education, having a home garden, and having big animals were significant factors of inadequate dietary diversity practice. Nutrition intervention focused on nutrition education to increase meal frequency should be provided for lactating postpartum mothers to improve inadequate dietary diversity practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Child feeding practices during the first two years of life are crucial to ensure good health and nutrition status. This study aimed to assess the factors influencing inappropriate child feeding practices in children aged 6 - 23 months in families receiving nutrition allowance in the remote Mugu district, Nepal. METHODS A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 318 mothers who had children aged 6 - 23 months of age in the seven randomly selected wards. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select the desired number of respondents. Data were collected using pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariable binary logistic regression was used to estimate crude odds ratio (cOR), and adjusted odds ratio (aOR), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to understand factor associated with child feeding practices. RESULTS Almost half of the children aged 6 - 23 months were not consuming a diverse diet (47.2%; 95% CI: 41.7%, 52.7%), did not meet the recommended minimum meal frequency (46.9%; 95% CI: 41.4%, 52.4%) and did not consume minimum acceptable diet (51.7%; 95% CI: 46.1%, 57.1%). Only 27.4% (95% CI: 22.7%, 32.5%) of children met the recommended complementary feeding practices. Multivariable analysis showed maternal characteristics such as mothers who gave birth at home (aOR = 4.70; 95% CI: 1.03, 21.31) and mothers in unpaid employment (aOR = 2.56; 95% CI: 1.06, 6.19) were associated with increased odds of inappropriate child feeding practices. Household economy (i.e. family with < 150 USD monthly income) was also associated with increased odds of inappropriate child feeding practices (aOR = 1.19; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.42). CONCLUSION Despite the receipt of nutritional allowances, child feeding practices among 6 - 23 months children were not optimal. Additional context-specific behavior change strategies on child nutrition targeting mothers may be required.

Abstract
We explore the impacts of economic and financial dislocations caused by COVID-19 pandemic shocks on food sales in the United States from January 2020 to January 2021. We use the US weekly economic index (WEI) to measure economic dislocations and the Chicago Board Options Exchange volatility index (VIX) to capture the broader stock market dislocations. We validate the NARDL model by testing a battery of models using the autoregressive distributed lags (ARDL) methodology (ARDL, NARDL, and QARDL specifications). Our study postulates that an increase in WEI has a significant negative long-term effect on food sales, whereas a decrease in WEI has no statistically significant (long-run) effect. Thus, policy responses that ignore asymmetric effects and hidden cointegration may fail to promote food security during pandemics.

IntroductionThe impact of COVID-19 on small-scale fishing communities is of great concern given the importance of aquatic foods in trade, nutrition and livelihoods. Using a case study of Lake Victoria, augmented by published literature, we examine the socioeconomic dynamics and severity of COVID-19 impacts on Kenyan fishing communities.MethodsA household level questionnaire was administered through phone interviews on a monthly basis from June 2020 to May 2021, including a focus group discussion in July 2021.ResultsWe find that multifold fear of COVID-19 infection and control measures were present and varied across case rates and stringency of control measures. Fishers and traders reported being affected by disease control measures that limited market access and their ability to fish overnight. In spite of these worries, and contrary to what has been reported in the published literature regarding impacts observed in the early months of the pandemic, we see stable participation in fishing and fish trading over time despite the pandemic. Food insecurity was high before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, but did not substantially shift with the pandemic.ConclusionOur findings suggest that Kenyan fishing and fish trading households adopted diverse strategies to cope and balance generating income to provide for their families and staying safe. Our results underscore the need to understand ways in which acute pandemic impacts evolve over time given that effects are likely heterogeneous across small-scale fishing communities.

Abstract
The combined burden of stunting and wasting in children under five years is a serious public health concern. The present study aimed to estimate the joint burden of stunting and wasting among children aged 6-59 months and explore its spatial variation across Nepal. The 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey data was used to study acute and chronic childhood malnutrition. A Bayesian distributional bivariate probit geoadditive model was designed to study the linear association and geographical variation of stunting and wasting among 6-59 months, children. Child-related factors such as low birth weight, fever in the last 2 weeks preceding the survey and fourth or greater birth order were associated with a higher likelihood of stunting. The likelihood of a child being stunted was significantly less in the wealthiest households, having improved toilet facilities, and if mothers were overweight. Children from severely food insecure households were significantly more likely, and children from poorer households were significantly less likely to suffer both acute and chronic malnutrition simultaneously. Results from spatial effect showed that children from Lumbini and Karnali had a higher burden of stunting, and the likelihood that achild would have been wasted was significantly higher in Madhesh and Province 1. Immediate nutritional efforts are vital in low-income and severely food insecure households to lessen the risk of stunting and wasting in under children. Disproportionate geographic variations in stunting and wasting warrant sub-regional-specific nutrition intervention to achieve nutrition targets and reduce the burden of childhood malnutrition across the country.

Abstract
This study aims to assess the food and nutrition insecurity among different income quintiles in Central Sudan. Particularly, it seeks to determine the level of dietary energy consumption (DEC) and other macronutrients intake. In addition, it estimates the Engel ratios and income elasticity of food demand. A sample of about 668 households was selected from Khartoum State to collect the primary data during the year 2017. Primary data was collected through two types of questionnaires, the structured household questionnaire, and the 24-hour food recall questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and One-way ANOVA Table. The outcomes prove that income contributes extensively to DEC as well as intakes of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. The households in the lowest income quintile spend a high monetary value to purchase foods when compared with households in other income quintiles. The Engel ratios exhibit that the share of food consumption from the total income for the lowest income quintile is about 62%, which is higher relative to the highest income quintile (43.6%). In addition, Engel ratios varies significantly among the income quintiles at level 1%. The income elasticity of food demand in dietary energy consumption is higher for the lowest income quintile (0.49) than the highest income quintile (0.23). This indicates that a little increase in income will contribute significantly to better nutritional status for the lowest income quintile. Eventually, the paper recommends improving income earnings through income-based policies to reduce the level of food deprivation. The government should adopt specific market policies that focus on the low-income level to enhance access to nutritious foods.

Abstract
Increasingly, rural households in developing countries are shopping for food online, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend. In parallel, dietary guidelines worldwide recommend eating a balanced and healthy diet. With this in mind, this study explores whether online food shopping boosts dietary diversity-defined as the number of distinct food groups consumed-among rural households in China. Because people choose to shop for food online, it is important to account for the self-selection bias inherent in online food shopping. Accordingly, we estimate the treatment effects of online food shopping on dietary diversity using the endogenous switching model with a count outcome variable. The results indicate that online food shopping increases dietary diversity by 7.34%. We also find that education, asset ownership, and knowing the government's dietary guidelines are the main factors driving rural households' decisions to shop for food online.

Abstract
Syrian refugees in Lebanon are facing vulnerabilities that are affecting their food insecurity (FI) levels. The objectives of this study were to measure dietary diversity, FI and mental health status of Syrian refugee mothers in Lebanon and to explore its associations with their anaemia and nutritional status. A cross-sectional study was conducted among mothers with children under 5 years (n 433) in Greater Beirut, Lebanon. Dietary diversity was measured using the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) of reproductive age and FI using the global Food Insecurity Experience Scale at the individual level. Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were measured to assess the maternal mental health status. Data on socio-economic characteristics, anthropometric measurements and Hb concentrations were collected. Overall, 63·3 % of the mothers had a low dietary diversity (LDD) and 34·4 % were moderately to severely food insecure, with 12·5 % being severely food insecure. The prevalence of PTSD, moderate depression and severe depression was 13·2, 11·1 and 9·9 %, respectively. A significant correlation was found between LDD and FI (P < 0·001). Low income was significantly associated with LDD and FI. Poor mental health was significantly associated with FI. LDD and FI were not associated with anaemia and nutritional status of mothers. Low-income households had significantly higher intakes of grains and refined starchy staples, whereas high-income households consumed more nutritious foods and sweets. Evidence of inadequate diet quality, FI and poor mental health among Syrian refugee mothers in Lebanon is presented. Multifaceted actions are needed to reduce FI and improve dietary diversity.

Abstract
Introduction Lactating mothers are extremely vulnerable to both macro and micronutrient deficiencies due to the increased nutritional requirements and high magnitude of food insecurity in low-income countries. However, there are a dearth of studies conducted in sub-Saharan African countries regarding this study area. Thus, this study aimed to assess the magnitude of food insecurity and its associated factors among lactating mothers in the Chiro district, eastern Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 446 randomly selected lactating mothers from 1-30 June, 2020. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured and pre-tested questionnaire. Data were entered using EpiData version 3.1 and exported to STATA version 14.2 for cleaning and analysis. Bi-variable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were fitted to check the association between independent variables and food insecurity. The level of statistical significance was declared at a p-value < 0.05. Results The magnitude of food insecurity among lactating mothers was 68.8 % (95 % CI: 64.4, 72.9) and 12.1% (95 % CI: 9.4, 15.5) were severely food insecure. Residing in the rural (AOR =2.36, 95% CI:1.21, 4.62), poor wealth indices (AOR =4.68, 95% CI:2.02, 10.8), owning farmland of less than a hectare (AOR =2.35, 95% CI:1.06, 5.19), mothers who had less than three meals a day (AOR =2.70, 95% CI:1.33, 5.46), and who did not have their own income (AOR =2.32, 95% CI:1.36, 3.96) were significantly associated factors with food insecurity among lactating mothers. Conclusion Food insecurity is highly prevalent in lactating mothers' households. Therefore, the government and other stakeholders need to take action that addresses factors affecting mothers' food security status through strengthening nutrition-sensitive interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Food adequacy and dietary quality in the lactation period are fundamental for maternal and child health. Lactating mothers are vulnerable to malnutrition because of increased physiological demand, monotonous diet, lactogenesis process, and increased nutrient requirements. The micronutrient adequacy especially among women is not ensured in Indian diet. The dual course of gender bias and poverty, along with lack of knowledge about diet quality are significant impediments in maintaining minimum dietary diversity among Indian women. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of minimum dietary diversity and associated factors among lactating women. METHODOLOGY A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 1236 lactating women through a multistage sampling procedure in Haryana state, India. Data were collected in Computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) using a pretested structured interview schedule. Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was used to calculate the minimum dietary diversity. RESULTS The mean dietary diversity score among lactating women from the ten food groups was 6.35 ± 2.57 and the prevalence of minimum dietary diversity was 77.1%. The complete model revealed that both individual and household factors can explain the variation in dietary diversity intake. Furthermore, the result of model 2 explained that women aged 31 to 35 years (AOR 5.92,95% (1.87-18.77), graduation and above qualified women (AOR 1.98, 95% (0.96-4.09) and lactating women with high knowledge on nutrition (AOR 2.00, 95% (1.34-4.57) were the significant factors promoting minimum dietary diversity. CONCLUSION Three-fourths of the lactating women reached adequate minimum dietary diversity. Younger age, low educational level, and poor nutritional knowledge were significant constraints to achieving minimum dietary diversity. Further improvement in the minimum dietary diversity among lactating women is very much required. It is also advised that exiting platforms dispersing awareness on nutrition should be supported and strengthened.

Abstract
Women's nutritional status remains poor in South Asia, impacting maternal and infant health outcomes. Women's household status is also low, as evidenced by eating behaviours. We started with triadic qualitative interviews with newly married women, husbands and mothers-in-law to explore the link between women's status and eating patterns, followed by longitudinal data from a cohort of 200 newly married women in rural Nepal to measure associations over time. Quantitative data were collected every 6 months for 18 months (four rounds of data) between 2018 and 2020. Interviews suggested that household relationships, women's status, and how much and what types of food she was given were intricately linked. Using mixed effects logistic regression models, we explore the association between markers of changing women's status (becoming pregnant, giving birth and working outside the home) on two outcomes (eating last always/usually and achieving minimum dietary diversity). We also explore for interaction between women's status and household food insecurity. Pregnancy increases women's dietary diversity, but this is not sustained post-partum. Women who work outside the home are less likely to eat last in the household. Food insecurity is associated with both the order of household eating and dietary diversity. Interactions between food insecurity and giving birth suggested that women who give birth in food insecure households are more likely to eat last in the household. Changes in women's household status are associated with some improvements in dietary diversity and order of household eating, but the associations are not long-lasting and depend on food security status.

Abstract
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and profile of food insecurity in households with children under 5 years old using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) in Thailand. We integrated FIES into the 2019 Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS). A total of 861 households were successfully interviewed with FIES. The Rasch model was applied to examine the validity and reliability. Multiple logistic regression was used to assess the association between socio-economic status and prevalence of food insecurity, adjusting for geographical regions and characteristics of households. We found that FIES measurement is valid as Infit falls within the normal range of 0.7−1.3 and is reliable (Rasch reliability value of 0.81). The overall prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity was 2.79%. The wealthiest households were less likely to suffer from food insecurity than the poorest households (adjusted OR: 0.07; 95% CI: 0.02−0.34; p-value < 0.05). Households with children under 5 years old living in rural areas had lower food insecurity severity scores. We recommend social protection policies such as food and nutrition subsidies or conditional cash transfer to poor households with children under the age of 5.

Abstract
Background Child undernutrition continues to be a major public health problem in many countries, including Nepal. The repercussions of undernutrition are not only limited to the affected children and families but also transcend to the national and global economy. Earlier studies from Nepal have predominantly used either ordinary least squares (OLS) regression or binary regression to analyse the socioeconomic and demographic correlates of the nutritional outcome. In this study, quantile regression was used to understand a complete and more precise estimate of the effects of the covariates on the child nutritional status. Methods This study was based on the most recent nationally representative Nepal Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2019. Height-for-age z scores (HAZ) were used as an indicator for assessing the nutritional status of under-five children. Quantile regression was used to examine the heterogeneous association of covariates with conditional HAZ distribution across the different quantiles (0.10, 0.30, 0.50, 0.85). As a comparison, the effects of covariates at conditional mean of HAZ using OLS regression was also analysed. The graphs were plotted to visualize the changes in the coefficients for each regressor across the entire conditional HAZ distribution. Results Age of children, sex of children, province and wealth had a consistent and statistically significant association with HAZ in both OLS and quantile regression. Improved toilet facility was positively correlated with HAZ at the lower tails (tenth and thirtieth percentiles). Ethnicity (Janajati and Newer) was positively correlated with HAZ at the lower tail (thirtieth percentile) and mean (OLS regression). Maternal education was a significant predictor of improved height-for-age across conditional quantiles, except at the tenth percentile. Maternal age, number of under-five children in household, number of household members, and improved source of drinking water showed heterogeneous effects across different quantiles of conditional HAZ distribution. Conclusion Use of quantile regression approach showed that the effect of different factors differed across the conditional distribution of HAZ. Policymakers should consider the heterogeneous effect of different factors on HAZ so that the targeted intervention could be implemented to maximize the nutritional benefits to children. Abstract
Background Maternal undernutrition is one of the most common causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Severe undernutrition among mothers leads to reduced lactation performance which further contributes to an increased risk of infant mortality. However, data regarding nutritional status of lactating mothers at Dessie town and its surrounding areas is lacking. This study assessed dietary diversity, nutritional status and associated factors of lactating mothers visiting health facilities at Dessie town, Amhara region, Ethiopia. Methods Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April, 2017 among 408 lactating mothers. Systematic random sampling technique was employed to select the study participants. Data on socio-demographic and economic characteristics, health related characteristics, dietary diversity and food security status of participants were collected using interviewer administered questionnaire. Data were entered into EPI-INFO and analyzed using SPSS Version 22. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with dietary diversity and nutritional status of lactating mothers. Results More than half (55.6%) of lactating mothers had inadequate dietary diversity (DDS<5.3) and about 21% were undernourished (BMI<18.5 kg/m2). Household monthly income [AOR = 2.0, 95% CI (1.15, 3.65)], type of house [AOR = 1.8, 95% CI (1.15, 2.94)], nutrition information [AOR = 1.6, 95% CI (1.05, 2.61)] and household food insecurity [AOR = 1.8, 95% CI (1.05, 3.06)] were factors associated with dietary diversity of lactating mothers. Being young in age 15–19 years [AOR = 10.3, 95% CI (2.89, 36.39)] & 20–29 years [AOR = 3.4, 95% CI (1.57, 7.36)], being divorced/separated [AOR = 10.1, 95% CI (1.42, 72.06)], inadequate dietary diversity [AOR = 3.8, 95% CI (2.08, 7.03)] and household food insecurity [AOR = 3.1, 95% CI (1.81, 5.32)] were factors associated with maternal undernutrition. Conclusion The dietary diversity of lactating mothers in the study area was sub optimal and the prevalence of undernutrition was relatively high. Public health nutrition interventions such as improving accessibility of affordable and diversified nutrient rich foods are important to improve the nutritional status of mothers and their children in the study area.

Abstract
Despite Bangladesh's remarkable progress in agricultural production over the past few decades, household food and nutrition insecurity persist, especially in rural areas. The nutrition security and dietary diversity are even more critical for women of reproductive age among smallholders. This study examined household food insecurity and dietary diversity of women of reproductive age in the rural areas of northwest Bangladesh. Using cross-sectional data collected from 252 smallholder households, we measured household food insecurity and dietary diversity of women of reproductive age by the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale and the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women, respectively. Determinants of household food insecurity were examined, and associations between household food insecurity and low dietary diversity were determined. The majority of the households were mildly insecure (51.2%) followed by moderately insecure (27.4%). The households felt anxiety of food insecurity for more than six months a year (Food Security Index = 2.10 out of 4.00). The mean food group consumed by women was 4.63 indicating low dietary diversity and dominance of diets by grains and dark green leafy vegetables. The findings also indicate a significant and positive association between household food insecurity and low dietary diversity of women. Education of household heads, household size, access to information sources, access to credit support, and perceived impacts of climate change on crop production were identified as determinants of household food insecurity. The study recommends that appropriate interventions be formulated to improve the food and nutrition security in the study areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lactating mothers are at increased risk of being underweight because of the physiological changes that lead to disproportionately higher energy and nutrient requirements compared to their non-pregnant and non-lactating counterparts. OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with being underweight among lactating women in Uganda. METHODS We used the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) 2016 data of 1356 women aged 20 to 49 years. Multistage stratified sampling was used to select study participants. The data were collected using validated questionnaires. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine factors associated with underweight among 20 to 49-year-old lactating women in Uganda. RESULTS The prevalence of underweight was 8.2% (111/1356) (95% confidence interval, [CI]: 7.0-10.0). Women who had no education were 10.21 (adjusted odds ratio, [AOR] = 10.21; 95% CI: 1.61-64.74) times as likely to be underweight as those who had higher (post-secondary) education levels. Women who were not working were 50% (AOR = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.26-0.94) less likely to be underweight compared to those who were working. Women in the Western (AOR = 0.15; 95% CI: 0.07-0.32), Eastern (AOR = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.18-0.66), and Central (AOR = 0.30; 95% CI: 0.12-0.74) regions were 85%, 66% and 70% respectively less likely to be underweight compared to those in the Northern region. CONCLUSION Based on the findings of this and other studies, it is important for the different stakeholders to design targeted nutrition programs for lactating women particularly those with low levels of education and those from the Northern region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food insecurity is a serious social and public health problem which is exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic especially in resource-poor countries such as Nepal. However, there is a paucity of evidence at local levels. This study aims to explore food insecurity among people from the disadvantaged community and low-income families during the COVID-19 pandemic in Province-2 of Nepal. METHODS The semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted virtually among purposively selected participants (n = 41) from both urban and rural areas in eight districts of Province 2 in Nepal. All the interviews were conducted in the local language between July and August 2020. The data analysis was performed using thematic network analysis in Nvivo 12 Pro software. RESULTS The results of this study are grouped into four global themes: i) Impact of COVID-19 on food security; ii) Food insecurity and coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic, iii) Food relief and emergency support during the COVID-19 pandemic, and iv) Impact of COVID-19 and food insecurity on health and wellbeing. Most participants in the study expressed that families from low socioeconomic backgrounds and disadvantaged communities such as those working on daily wages and who rely on remittance had experienced increased food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants used different forms of coping strategies to meet their food requirements during the pandemic. Community members experienced favouritism, nepotism, and partiality from local politicians and authorities during the distribution of food relief. The food insecurity among low-income and disadvantaged families has affected their health and wellbeing making them increasingly vulnerable to the COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSION Food insecurity among low-income and disadvantaged families was found to be a serious problem during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study suggests that the relief support plan and policies should be focused on the implementation of immediate sustainable food security strategies to prevent hunger, malnutrition, and mental health problems among the most vulnerable groups in the community.

Abstract
Maternal dietary feeding practice is one of the proxy indicators of maternal nutrient adequacy and it improves outcomes for both mothers and their offspring. The minimum maternal dietary diversity score of lactating women is defined as when the mother ate at least four and above food groups from the nine food groups 24 h preceding the survey regardless of the portion size. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the minimum dietary diversity score (MDDS) and its predictors among lactating mothers in the Pastoralist community, Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study design was employed on 360 lactating mothers using a multi-stage sampling technique from 5 January 2020 to 10 February 2020. Data were collected using questionnaires and anthropometry measurements. Data were entered using EPI-data 4.6.02 and exported into SPSS version 25. Statistical significance was declared at P-value <0⋅05 at multivariable logistic regression. Only one in four lactating mothers met the MDDS. The majority of them consumed cereals in the preceding 24 h of data collection. The most important predictors were maternal meal frequency (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 6⋅26; 95 % confidence interval (CI) (3⋅51, 11⋅15)), antenatal care (ANC) follow-up one to three times and four and above times (AOR: 2⋅58; 95 % CI (1⋅24, 5⋅36), 4⋅77 (1⋅90, 11⋅95), respectively) and secondary paternal education (AOR 2⋅97; 95 % CI (1⋅44, 6⋅11)). The MDDS among lactating mothers was low. Paternal education, maternal meal frequency and ANC follow-up were the significant predictors. Therefore, to improve maternal dietary diversity score emphasis should be given to those predictors.

Abstract
Background Major reasons for malnutrition, particularly among those who live in low- and middle-income countries, are physiological vulnerability and inadequate intake. The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence of undernutrition and associated factors among lactating mothers of Angecha District, Southern Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected lactating mothers in Angecha District from March to April 2017. A pretested structured questionnaire was used to assess the prevalence of undernutrition and associated factors among lactating mothers. Undernutrition was defined as the body mass index of less than 18.5 kg/m2. A multivariable logistic regression model was fitted, and the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) at a p value less than 0.05 was used to determine a statistically significant association between predictors and outcome variables. Result The prevalence of undernutrition among lactating mothers was 21.2% (95% CI: 17.52, 25.46). The odds of undernutrition were higher among lactating mothers in the younger age group (AOR 4.12 (95% CI: 1.25–13.63), compared to 36–49 years group), dietary diversity less than five food groups (AOR 2.4, 95% CI: 1.35–4.36), and not attending antenatal care (ANC) (AOR 2.90 (95% CI: 1.43–5.86), compared to those who attended ANC for 4 or more times). The odds of undernutrition among lactating women from 3rd quantile wealth index households reduced by nearly half (AOR 0.47, 95% CI: 0.23–0.98) compared to lactating mothers from 1st quantile wealth index households. Conclusion Nearly one in every five lactating mothers was undernourished. Age, dietary diversity score, ANC visit, and wealth index were found to be the associated factors of undernutrition. Therefore, due attention should have to be given to increase the use of ANC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The main objective of this study was to explore the factors affecting anaemia among women of reproductive age (WRA) in Nepal using spatial and multilevel epidemiological analysis. DESIGN This cross-sectional study analysed data from the 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey. Spatial analysis was performed using ArcGIS software V.10.8 to identify the hot and cold spots of anaemia among WRA (15-49 years). Data were analysed using multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression analysis. SETTING Nepal. PARTICIPANTS A total of 6414 WRA were included in the analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Anaemia defined by WHO as haemoglobin level less than 120 g/L in non-pregnant women and less than 110 g/L in pregnant women. RESULTS The spatial analysis showed that statistically significant hotspots of anaemia were in the southern Terai region (four districts in province 1, eight districts in province 2, one district in Bagmati province, two districts in province 5 and one district in Sudurpaschim province) of Nepal. At the individual level, women who underwent female sterilisation (adjusted OR, aOR: 3.61, 95% CI 1.10 to 11.84), with no education (aOR: 1.99, 95% CI: 1.17 to 3.39), and from middle socioeconomic class families (aOR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.02 to 2.68) were more likely to be anaemic, whereas, older women (>35 years) (aOR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.26 to 0.97) and those women who were using hormonal contraceptives (aOR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.43 to 0.90) were less likely to be anaemic. At the community level, women from province 2 (aOR=2.97, 95% CI: 1.52 to 5.82) had higher odds of being anaemic. CONCLUSION WRA had higher odds of developing anaemia, and it varied by the geographical regions. Nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions can be tailored based on the factors identified in this study to curb the high burden of anaemia.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess dietary diversity (DD) and associated factors among human immune deficiency virus (HIV)-positive adults attending the anti-retroviral therapy (ART) clinic at Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (FHCSH) in Northwest Ethiopia. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at FHCSH in 2019. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to select 352 study subjects. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and chart review. Statistical Package for the Social Science version 26 was used for analysis. A simple and multivariable binary logistic regression was used to determine associated factors. Two hundred and nine (59⋅4 %) adults had consumed a diversified diet. The mean individual DD score was 3⋅86 ± 1⋅18. Self-employment status (adjusted odd ratio (AOR): 4⋅60; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1⋅72, 12⋅27), quintiles of wealth index (the second (AOR: 4⋅33; 95 % CI: 1⋅72, 10⋅89), middle (AOR: 4⋅40; 95 % CI: 1⋅71, 11⋅31), fourth (AOR: 6⋅60; 95 % CI: 2⋅36, 18⋅48) and the highest quintiles (AOR: 9⋅45: 95 % CI: 3⋅34, 26⋅77), the last CD4 count 200-349 cells/mm3 (AOR: 8⋅08; 95 % CI: 2⋅93, 22⋅23), those who took first-line ART regimen drugs (AOR: 4⋅49; 95 % CI: 2⋅19, 9⋅21), subjects who did not take co-trimoxazole prophylaxis (AOR: 6⋅36; 95 % CI: 2⋅54, 15⋅88), those who had nutritional counselling at a health institution (AOR: 2⋅36; 95 % CI: 1⋅08, 5⋅16), had no food preference (AOR: 2⋅42; 95 % CI: 1⋅14, 5⋅13) and a food-secure household (AOR: 3⋅51; 95 % CI: 1⋅85, 6⋅67) were associated factors of DD among adults on ART. This study exhibited that the DD status among adults attending the ART clinic was below two-thirds. Health institutions and health professionals working at ART clinics shall strengthen their efforts to sustain the nutritional counselling service and ART adherence at health institutions and encourage the patients to avoid food preference for their meal. It is vital to ensure the household food security of adults on ART.

Undernutrition and Associated Factors among Lactating Mothers in Dega Damot Woreda, Northwest Ethiopia. J Nutr Metab 2020. Abstract
Introduction. Nutritional status of lactating women is highly linked with the overall nutritional status of population. Undernutrition during lactation results in increased morbidity and mortality to the mother and her child. The literature is dearth regarding to nutrition status of lactating mothers in developing countries such as Ethiopia. Objective. The aim of this study was to assess undernutrition and associated factors among lactating mothers having child 6–23 months in Dega Damot Woreda, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 21 to April 19, 2018. Simple random sampling technique was employed to recruit a total of 733 participants. Data were collected by using an interview-administered questionnaire and entered into EpiData version 4.2 and transferred to SPSS version 20 for further analysis. Factors associated with undernutrition were identified using multivariable logistic regression at a
value of less than 0.05 at 95% confidence interval. The direction and strength of association was interpreted using adjusted odds ratio. Results. In this study, the magnitude of undernutrition among lactating women was 21.8%. Being unmarried (AOR: 2.65, 95% CI: 1.54, 4.53), their first pregnancy <18 years (AOR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.42, 3.87), having more than 5 number of pregnancies (AOR: 2.79, 95% CI: 1.55, 5.03), inadequate dietary diversity score (AOR: 2.1, 95% CI: 1.16, 3.83), and household food insecurity (AOR: 3.68, 95% CI: 2.35, 5.77) were significantly associated factors with undernutrition. Conclusions. The prevalence of undernutrition among lactating women was found to be high. Programs should do better in enhancing activities of agricultural production to reduce household food insecure and to increase accessibility of diversified diet. Other researchers better to do other studies to identify main factors of undernutrition using a qualitative study.

Abstract
Background Food insecurity is a critical public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Nepal. The demographic transition has resulted in a growing population of senior citizens. However, the determinants of food insecurity among Nepali senior citizens remain unknown. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing food insecurity among the older populations in the far-western region, one of the poorest regions of the country. Further, we also aim to assess the potential association between adult children's migration and the food insecurity status of the left behind older parents. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 260 randomly selected senior citizens in the Kanchanpur district in far-western Nepal. The short form of the household food security scale, originally developed by the United States Department of Agriculture, was used to measure household food security. Associations were examined by logistic regression. Results The prevalence of food insecurity in senior citizens' households was 41.1%. Senior citizen households with their adult children's migration (AOR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.24-0.95) had lower odds of being food insecure whereas households with lower family income (<$100 compared to ≥ $100) had two times higher odds of being food insecure (AOR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.08-4.76). Also, households owning a cultivable land/farm (AOR = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.05-0.40), primary source of income as service/pension (AOR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.08-0.89) or business (AOR = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.03-0.59) and participants who received geriatric allowances (AOR = 0.05, 95% CI = 0.01-0.16) had lower odds of being food insecure. Conclusion The prevalence of food insecurity among households with a senior citizen in Kanchanpur district was high and associated with the migration status of adult children, and household socioeconomic status. This calls for a greater policy response focused specifically on households with older adults and the integration of gerontological evidence into the existing food security and nutrition strategies.
