Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between past-year internalizing symptoms and the time to first report of signs of nicotine dependence among young people. METHODS Secondary analysis using data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) (Waves 1-5; 2013-2019). The study included 2,102 (N = 5,031,691) young people (age 12-23 years) who reported past-30-day (P30D) e-cigarette use in one or more waves. Kaplan Meier curves, stratified by past year internalizing symptoms were used to estimate the time to the first report of three nicotine dependence symptoms (i.e., use within 30 min of waking, cravings, and really needing to use) following the first P30D e-cigarette use. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate crude and adjusted hazard ratios (AHR), comparing any past year internalizing symptoms to no past year internalizing symptoms. RESULTS We found no significant differences between past year internalizing symptoms and the time to the first report of cravings (AHR = 1.30, 95 % CI = 92-1.85), really needing to use (AHR = 1.31; 95 % CI = 0.92-1.89) and use within 30 min of waking for follow-up times 0-156 weeks (AHR = 0.84; 95 % CI = 0.55-1.30) and > 156 weeks (AHR = 0.41; 95 % CI = 0.04-4.67) respectively. CONCLUSION Past year internalizing symptoms did not modify the time to the first report of nicotine dependence among youth with P30D e-cigarette use. Further research is needed to understand how changing internalizing symptoms and e-cigarette use frequency influence nicotine dependence over time and, how this relationship impacts cessation behavior.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although the relationship between smoking and depression has been well-established, little is known about the association between use of e-cigarette and depression, particularly among youth and young adults. This study proposes that e-cigarette dependence, rather than simply use, serves as a potential stressor and may interact with pre-existing vulnerabilities to contribute to depression in youth, consistent with the diathesis-stress theory. This study examines the longitudinal association of vaping dependence and vaping frequency on depression symptoms among youth and young adults who have never smoked cigarettes. METHODS People who used e-cigarettes in the past month who reported never smoking a cigarette (N=1,226) aged between 16 and 25 years were followed longitudinally every 3 months for up to 1 year beginning in 2020. The Penn State E-Cigarette Dependence Index at time t was used to predict depression symptoms assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale at time t+1. RESULTS A total of 32.1% reported vaping in the past month with the Penn State E-Cigarette Dependence Index score (M=8.5) and a Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale score (M=15.8). Higher vaping dependence scores were significantly associated with increased depression symptoms scores at follow-up among youth and adults (β=0.08; 95% CI=0.01, 0.15), controlling for baseline depression symptom scores and covariates. Although vaping dependence was highly associated with vaping frequency level, no significant association between the frequency of vaping and depression was found (β= -0.33; 95% CI= 1.21, 0.54). CONCLUSIONS These results are consistent with the diathesis-stress model of the relationship between substance use and depression. Vaping dependence but not vaping frequency was associated with increased depressive symptoms among people who never smoked cigarettes.

Abstract
Human epidemiological studies have identified links between nicotine intake and stress disorders, including anxiety, depression and PTSD. Here we review the clinical evidence for activation and desensitization of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) relevant to affective disorders. We go on to describe clinical and preclinical pharmacological studies suggesting that nAChR function may be involved in the etiology of anxiety and depressive disorders, may be relevant targets for medication development, and may contribute to the antidepressant efficacy of non-nicotinic therapeutics. We then review what is known about nAChR function in a subset of limbic system areas (amygdala, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex), and how this contributes to stress-relevant behaviors in preclinical models that may be relevant to human affective disorders. Taken together, the preclinical and clinical literature point to a clear role for ACh signaling through nAChRs in regulation of behavioral responses to stress. Disruption of nAChR homeostasis is likely to contribute to the psychopathology observed in anxiety and depressive disorders. Targeting specific nAChRs may therefore be a strategy for medication development to treat these disorders or to augment the efficacy of current therapeutics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression are the leading causes of disability in the U.S. Using five cycles (2009-2018) of the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we examined the cross-sectional association between CVD risk factor burden and depression severity in nonpregnant adults with no history of CVD events. METHODS With at least 3000 participants per cycle, the overall N was 18,175. CVD risk factors were ascertained through self-report, lab tests, or medications. The sum of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and current smoking represented a CVD risk score variable (range: 0-4). Depression severity was assessed using scores on the 9-item patient health questionnaire: 0-9 (none-mild) and 10-27 (moderate-to-severe). Logistic regression models were performed to investigate the association between CVD risk score categories and moderate-to-severe depression. Cycle-specific odds ratios (OR) were meta-analyzed to obtain a pooled OR (95 % CI) (Q-statistic p > 0.05). RESULTS Compared to participants with no CVD risk factors, participants with risk scores of 1, 2, 3, and 4, had 1.28 (0.92-1.77), 2.18 (1.62-2.94), 2.53 (1.86-3.49), 2.97 (1.67-5.31) times higher odds of moderate-to-severe depression, respectively, after adjusting for socio-demographics and antidepressant use (linear trend p < 0.0001). This relationship persisted after additionally adjusting for lifestyle variables. LIMITATIONS NHANES data is cross-sectional and self-reported, thus preventing causal assessments and leading to potential recall bias. CONCLUSIONS Among U.S. adults, CVD risk factor burden was associated with worsened depression symptoms. Integrated mental and physical healthcare services could improve risk stratification among persons with CVD and depression, possibly reducing long-term disability and healthcare costs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Models of addiction have identified deficits in inhibitory control, or the ability to inhibit inappropriate or unwanted behaviors, as one factor in the development and maintenance of addictive behaviors. Current literature supports disruption of the prefrontal circuits that mediate reactive inhibitory control processes (i.e., inhibition in response to sudden, unplanned changes in environmental demands) in substance use disorders. However, the relationship between disorders of addiction, such as nicotine dependence, and planned inhibitory processes (i.e., inhibition that occurs after advance warning) is unclear. The goal of the present study was to examine the extent to which reactive and planned inhibitory processes are differentially disrupted in nicotine dependent individuals. METHOD We employed an internet-based novel stop signal task wherein participants were instructed to stop a continuous movement at either a predictable or unpredictable time. This task explicitly separated planned and reactive inhibitory processes and assessed group differences in task performance between smokers (N = 281) and non-smokers (N = 164). The smoker group was defined as any participant that identified as a smoker and reported an average daily nicotine consumption of at least 2 mg. The non-smoker group was defined as any participant that identified as a non-smoker and had not been a former smoker that quit within the last year. The smoker group also completed a questionnaire regarding smoking behaviors which included the Fägerstrom Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND). We used these data to assess the continuous relation between planned stopping, unplanned stopping, and smoking behaviors. RESULTS We found significant differences in stop times for both reactive and planned stopping between groups as well as within the smoker group. Additionally, in the smoker group, dependence as measured by the FTND was associated with longer stop times on planned stop trials. Surprisingly, greater daily average consumption of nicotine was related to faster stopping for both trial types. CONCLUSION These results indicate the relevance of measuring both reactive and planned inhibitory processes for elucidating the relationship between nicotine addiction and mechanisms of inhibitory control.

Abstract
Nowadays, tobacco companies target to recruit new smokers among adolescents due to this age group was easy to be influenced by smoking behaviours. This narrative review aimed to explore the possible impact of smoking among adolescents. Knowing the negative impacts of smoking might result in avoiding continuing the habit or preventing from initiation of the habit. The literature search on PubMed, SCOPUS, and Epistemonikos database with related search terms of “adolescents”, “smoking” and “impact”. Only papers published within the year 2017 to 2021 and in the English language were included. However, articles without full text were excluded from this review. Fourteen articles were selected and divided impacts into three categories which are effect on oral health, effect on general health and other impacts. Possible impacts of smoking among adolescents were identified, and it could be beneficial in the development of customized smoking prevention or smoking cessation intervention for adolescents.

Abstract
Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) dysregulation has been implicated in the pathophysiology of many psychiatric disorders, as well as nicotine use and dependence. We used positron emission tomography with [18F]FPEB to measure mGluR5 availability in vivo in 6 groups: (1) nicotine users (NUs) without other psychiatric comorbidities (n = 23); (2) comparison controls (CCs) without nicotine use or psychiatric comorbidities (n = 38); (3) major depressive disorder subjects with concurrent nicotine use (MDD-NU; n = 19); (4) MDD subjects without concurrent nicotine use (MDD-CC; n = 20); (5) posttraumatic stress disorder subjects with concurrent nicotine use (PTSD-NU; n = 17); and (6) PTSD subjects without concurrent nicotine use (PTSD-CC; n = 16). The goal of the study was to test the hypothesis that mGluR5 availability in key corticolimbic regions of interest (ROIs) is different in NU with versus without comorbid psychiatric disorders (ROI: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex [dlPFC], orbitofrontal cortex [OFC], ventromedial prefrontal cortex [vmPFC], anterior cingulate cortex [ACC], amygdala, hippocampus). We found that NU had 11%-13% lower mGluR5 availability in OFC, vmPFC, dlPFC, and ACC as compared with CC, while PTSD-NU had 9%-11% higher mGluR5 availability in OFC, dlPFC, and ACC compared with PTSD. Furthermore, relationships between mGluR5 availability and psychiatric symptoms varied as a function of psychiatric diagnosis among NUs. NU showed a negative correlation between mGluR5 and smoking cravings and urges (r's = -0.58 to -0.70, p's = 0.011 - 0.047), while PTSD-NU had the reverse relationship (r's = 0.60-0.71, p's = 0.013-0.035 in ACC, vmPFC, and dlPFC). These findings have substantial implications for our understanding of glutamate homeostasis in psychiatric subgroups and for identifying key neural phenotypes among NU. mGluR5 is a potential treatment target for precision medicine in individuals with nicotine use.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether significant associations exist between multicultural families and adolescent smoking risks in South Korea. Data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based survey from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed. Participants were classified into four family types (South Korean mother-foreign father, South Korean father-foreign mother, both foreign parents, and both South Korean parents) according to their parents' country of birth and smoking was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. A logistic regression analysis was used to examine the significance of the associations. Overall, 194,259 participants (boys: 94,793, girls: 99,466) enrolled in this study. Adolescents whose parents were born overseas were more likely to smoke than native South Korean adolescents (boys: odds ratio [OR] = 2.61, confidence interval [CI] = 1.79-3.81, girls: OR 3.94, CI 2.42-6.43). When the mother's country of birth was a developing country, there was an increased likelihood of girls smoking, and there was an increased likelihood of smoking among boys when the mother's country of birth was North Korea. When both parents were born abroad, and the mother's country of birth was a developing country, the likelihood of smoking risks among their multicultural teenage children increased. Policies and interventions need to be established and implemented to lower the smoking rate among multicultural teenagers.

Abstract
Despite remarkable progress, tobacco control efforts are not equitably distributed, and tobacco-related disparities continue to contribute to significant health disparities. Our premise in this commentary is that Intersectionality can serve as a productive analytical framework for examining tobacco-related disparities across and within multiple marginalized populations. Intersectionality is a theoretical framework for understanding the multiple interlocking societal systems that bestow privilege and oppression and is increasingly being to the study of health inequities. We present a model and describe how tobacco-related disparities can be understood via critical elements of Intersectionality. We conclude that the application of Intersectionality to understanding tobacco-related disparities has potential to stimulate meaningful discussion and lead to new and innovative multilevel and cross-cutting interventions to eliminate tobacco-related disparities and foster culturally safe environment in which all people can thrive. IMPLICATIONS This commentary describes how Intersectionality can serve as a productive analytic framework for examining the development and maintenance of tobacco-related disparities across and within many marginalized groups.

Abstract
Although findings are mixed, discrimination has been identified as a risk factor for smoking in sexual minority women (SMW; e.g., lesbian and bisexual). We examined associations between past-year discrimination and cigarette smoking among SMW. Using regression analyses we examined associations of past-year discrimination including count of types of discriminatory experiences and attributions of the main reason for discrimination (i.e., sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, gender) with smoking outcomes (e.g., current smoking, nicotine dependence, smoking more cigarettes now than 12 months ago). We conducted exploratory analyses to examine whether race/ethnicity and sexual identity moderated the associations of past-year discrimination with smoking outcomes. The sample included 619 SMW. Most identified as lesbian (74.3%) and non-White (61.1%). SMW who reported a higher count of types of discriminatory experiences (AOR 1.54, 95% CI 1.12-2.12) and any gender-based discrimination in the past year (AOR 4.79, 95% CI 1.39-16.45) reported smoking more cigarettes now than 12 months ago. Associations of other past-year discrimination measures with other smoking outcomes were not significant. Compared to White SMW, any discrimination [B (SD) = 2.56 (0.83)] and a higher count of types of discriminatory experiences in the past year [B (SD) = 0.88 (0.31)] were associated with higher nicotine dependence scores in Black/African American SMW. Past-year discrimination are associated with smoking outcomes in SMW. Black/African American race moderated the associations of any past-year discrimination and a higher count of types of discriminatory experiences with nicotine dependence scores in SMW. Targeted interventions to mitigate the influence of discrimination on smoking among SMW are needed.

Abstract
We identified associations between cigarette-smoking and taste function in the U.S. NHANES 2013-2014. Adults ≥ 40 years (n = 2849, nearly half former or current smokers) rated whole-mouth and tongue-tip bitter (1 mM quinine) and salt (1 M NaCl, 0.32 M NaCl) intensities and reported smoking history (pack years, PY), dependence (time to first cigarette, TTFC) and menthol/non-menthol use. Perceived intensity on the tongue-tip averaged just below moderate for quinine and moderate to strong for 1 M NaCl. Current chronic smokers (≥ 20 PY) reported lower bitter and salty intensities on the tongue-tip (β: -2.0, 95% CI: -3.7 to -0.4 and β: -3.6, 95% CI: -6.9 to -0.3, respectively) than never smokers. Similarly, compared to never smokers, dependent current smokers (TTFC ≤ 30 min) and dependent chronic smokers (≥ 20 PY, TTFC ≤ 30 min) rated less bitter (β: -2.0, 95% CI: -4.0 to 0.1 and β: -2.9, 95% CI: -4.5 to -1.3, respectively) and salty (β: -5.3, 95% CI: -9.3 to -1.4 and β: -4.7, 95% CI: -8.6 to -0.7, respectively) intensities on the tongue-tip. Depressed tongue-tip intensity in dependent smokers (with/without chronicity) versus never smokers was significant in younger (40-65 years), but not older (> 65 years) adults. Former smokers, non-chronic/less dependent smokers, and menthol smokers were more likely to report elevated whole-mouth quinine and 1 M NaCl intensities. Tongue-tip and whole-mouth taste intensity concordance varied between smokers and never smokers-current dependent smokers were more likely to rate tongue-tip quinine and NaCl lower than their respective whole-mouth tastants (OR: 1.8, 95% CI: 1.0 to 3.1 and OR: 1.8, 95% CI: 1.1 to 2.8, respectively). In summary, these U.S. nationally-representative data show that current smoking with chronicity and/or dependence associates with lower tongue-tip intensity for bitter and salty stimuli. Smokers with greater exposure to nicotine and/or dependence showed greater risk of taste alterations, with implications for diet- and smoking-related health outcomes.
