Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to investigate whether Serpin clade C (SERPINC1), E-selectin, P-selectin, Placental protein 13 (PP13), and Retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP4) levels in maternal serum were associated with the presence of preeclampsia and to compare them with uncomplicated pregnancies. METHODS This prospective study included 40 women with preeclampsia and 40 healthy pregnant women. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit was used to measure serum SERPINC1, E-selectin, P-selectin, PP13, and RBP4 levels. RESULTS The preeclampsia group had significantly higher E-selectin and P-selectin levels than the control group. PP13 and SERPINC1 levels were also significantly lower than the control group. There was no significant difference in RBP4 levels. The receiver operating characteristic curve revealed the best cutoff values for the following: E-selectin >19.2 ng/mL, with 87.5% sensitivity and 95% specificity; P-selectin >5.1 ng/mL, with 97.5% sensitivity and 100% specificity; PP13 ≤ 107.03 pg/mL, with 72.5% sensitivity and 77.5% specificity; and SERPINC1 ≤ 87.76 ng/mL, with 100% sensitivity and 97.5% specificity. CONCLUSION In this study, the endothelial dysfunction parameters SERPINC1, PP13, E-selectin, and P-selectin were found to be associated with preeclampsia. Endothelial dysfunction biomarkers in maternal non-serum body fluids may differ. More research is needed, especially to determine the relationship between SERPINC1 and preeclampsia.

Abstract
Adipokines are signaling proteins involved in metabolic, endocrinological, vascular and immunogenic processes. Associations of various adipokines with not only insulin resistance but also with increased insulin sensitivity, increased systolic blood pressure, and atherosclerosis highlight the significance of adipokines in several components of metabolic syndrome and metabolic diseases in general. As pregnancy presents a unique metabolic state, the role of adipokines in pregnancy, and even in various pregnancy complications, appears to be key to elucidating these metabolic processes. Many studies in recent years have attempted to clarify the role of adipokines in pregnancy and gestational pathologies. In this review, we aim to investigate the changes in maternal adipokine levels in physiological gestation, as well as the association of adipokines with pregnancy pathologies, such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and preeclampsia (PE). Furthermore, we will analyze the association of adipokines in both maternal serum and cord blood with parameters of intrauterine growth and various pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the changes in serum levels of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) with cerebral infarction, relationship of RBP4 with oxidative stress and carotid atherosclerosis, and its possible role in cerebral infarction. Materials and methods According to the results of cervical vascular ultrasound, the experimental group was divided into three groups: intima thickening group (n = 31), stable plaque group (n = 51), and unstable plaque group (n = 54). Forty healthy subjects were selected as the control group. Their serum levels of RBP4, 8-iso-prostaglandin-F2alpha (8-iso-PGF2α), and catalase (CAT) were measured. Carotid vascular ultrasound was used to measure the plaque area and intima-media thickness (IMT). Results The serum RBP4 and 8-iso-PGF2α levels, IMT and plaque area in the control, intimal thickening, stable plaque, and unstable plaque groups increased, while the serum level of CAT decreased (P < 0.001). The serum levels of RBP4 positively correlated with 8-iso-PGF2α, IMT, and plaque area and negatively correlated with CAT level. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.778 in predicting unstable plaques. Conclusions The serum levels of RBP4 were significantly elevated in elderly patients with cerebral infarction and correlated with oxidative stress injury and the degree of atherosclerosis. Serum RBP4 has diagnostic value for unstable plaques in carotid arteries.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-related disease and is the leading cause of overall maternal mortality and morbidity. Our previous studies have shown that the serum and placental levels of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) in PE are reduced. Our previous bioinformatics analysis predicted that RBP4 is a target of the microRNA miRNA-24-3p. In this study, our database analysis also indicated that RBP4 is a miR-24-3p target. Compared with that of the normal placenta, the expression level of RBP4 in human PE placenta was significantly reduced, and miR-24-3p was highly expressed. In HTR-8/SVneo cells, transfection of exogenous miR-24-3p reduced RBP4 expression. A dual-luciferase reporter assay validated RBP4 as a direct target of miR-24-3p, indicating that it directly binds to the 3'-untranslated region of RBP4. This binding was reversed by a mutation in the microRNA-binding site. Transwell invasion experiments and CCK8 assay showed that inhibitory effect of miR-24-3p reduced RBP4 mediated HTR-8/SVneo cell invasion and proliferation. These data provide a new overarching perspective on the physiological role played by miR-24-3p in regulating RBP4 during trophoblast dysfunction and PE development.

Abstract
Pregnancy and lactation are critical life stages with unique nutritional requirements, including for vitamin A (VA). Current DRIs for VA were published in 2001. The objective of this review was to identify and categorize evidence related to VA requirements in pregnancy and lactation since these DRIs were formulated. We searched MEDLINE and included articles according to an analytic framework of maternal VA exposure on status and health outcomes in the mother-child dyad. Intermediate and indirect evidence supports that maternal VA intakes can impact the mother's VA status, breastmilk, and health outcomes, as well as the child's VA status and select health outcomes. Food-based approaches can lead to more sustained, sufficient VA status in mothers and children. Research needs include further study linking maternal VA intakes on maternal and child VA status, and further associations with outcomes to determine intake requirements to optimize health.

Abstract
Background To assess the association between plasma retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) levels both in the first trimester and second trimester and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods Plasma RBP4 levels and insulin were measured among 135 GDM cases and 135 controls nested within the Peking University Birth Cohort in Tongzhou. Multivariable linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the influence of RBP4 levels on insulin resistance. Conditional logistic regression models were used to compute the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) between RBP4 levels and risk of GDM. Results The GDM cases had significantly higher levels of RBP4 in the first trimester than controls (medians: 18.0 μg/L vs 14.4 μg/L; P < 0.05). Plasma RBP4 concentrations in the first and second trimester were associated with fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) in the second trimester (all P < 0.001). With adjustment for diet, physical activity, and other risk factors for GDM, the risk of GDM increased with every 1-log μg/L increment of RBP4 levels, and the OR (95% CI) was 3.12 (1.08–9.04) for RBP4 in the first trimester and 3.38 (1.03–11.08) for RBP4 in the second trimester. Conclusions Plasma RBP4 levels both in the first trimester and second trimester were dose-dependently associated with increased risk of GDM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metformin has been reported to decrease insulin resistance and is associated with a lower risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia. It is widely accepted that the placenta plays a crucial role in the development of preeclampsia. Our aim is to explore the effect of metformin on preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN We examined control diet-fed (isocaloric diet) pregnant mice (CTRL group), pregnant mice fed a high-fat diet (HF group), and high-fat-diet-fed pregnant mice treated with metformin (HF-M group). The HF mice were fed a high-fat diet six weeks before pregnancy to establish a preeclampsia-like model; then, the group was randomly divided into a HF group and a HF-M group after pregnancy. Blood pressure, urine protein, pregnancy outcomes, protein expression, and histopathological changes in the placentas of all groups were examined and statistically analysed. RESULTS We observed that metformin significantly improved high blood pressure, proteinuria, and foetal and placental weights in the HF-M group compared with the HF group. Metformin significantly improved placental labyrinth and foetal vascular development in preeclampsia. In addition, metformin effectively increased matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in the placenta. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that metformin can improve preeclamptic symptoms and pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate laboratory markers in women who got pregnant after renal transplantation. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional prospective study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Renal function parameters and maternal and fetal data were assessed in renal transplant recipients. RESULTS Forty-three women who got pregnant after renal transplantation (mean age, 28.5 years; mean gestational age, 35.6 weeks) were included. Most patients (53.5%) received a renal transplant from a deceased donor. Podocyturia was not significantly correlated with other renal function markers. Mean period from transplantation to pregnancy was approximately 5 years; this period was not associated with obstetric complications or changes in renal markers. A gradual increase was observed in the following parameters during pregnancy and puerperium: serum creatinine levels (P < 0.001), proteinuria (P < 0.001), urinary protein/creatinine ratio (P < 0.001), and albumin/creatinine ratio (P < 0.001). The sensitivity and specificity of protein/creatinine ratio in predicting preeclampsia were high (96.0% and 94.0%, respectively). Elevated serum creatinine levels, urinary albumin/creatinine ratio, and retinol-binding protein levels in the third trimester were associated with prematurity (P < 0.001). Preeclampsia was the main cause of renal function decline at the end of pregnancy (65.0% of cases). Approximately four (9.5%) pregnant women presented with premature rupture of membranes and 18 (42.0%) with a urinary tract infection. CONCLUSIONS Proteinuria, urinary protein/creatinine ratio, and retinol-binding protein levels were elevated in patients with preeclampsia. Using these markers to assess renal function during pregnancy may be clinically useful for detecting and monitoring renal injury in renal transplant recipients.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS The incidence of pre-eclampsia, a multisystem disorder of pregnancy, is fourfold higher in type 1 diabetic than non-diabetic women; it is also increased in women with features of the metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. In a prospective study of pregnant women with type 1 diabetes, we measured plasma levels of adipokines known to be associated with insulin resistance: leptin, fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4), adiponectin (total and high molecular weight [HMW]; also known as high molecular mass), retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) and resistin and evaluated associations with the subsequent development of pre-eclampsia. METHODS From an established prospective cohort of pregnant type 1 diabetic women, we studied 23 who developed pre-eclampsia and 24 who remained normotensive; for reference values we included 19 healthy non-diabetic normotensive pregnant women. Plasma adipokines were measured (by ELISA) in stored samples from three study visits (Visit 1- Visit 3) at different gestational ages (mean ± SD): Visit 1, 12.4 ± 1.8 weeks; Visit 2, 21.7 ± 1.4 weeks; and Visit 3, 31.4 ± 1.5 weeks. All the women were free of microalbuminuria and hypertension at enrolment. All study visits preceded the clinical onset of pre-eclampsia. RESULTS In all groups, leptin, the ratio of leptin to total or HMW adiponectin, FABP4 concentration, ratio of FABP4 to total or HMW adiponectin and resistin level increased, while total and HMW adiponectin decreased, with gestational age. At Visit 1: (1) in diabetic women with vs without subsequent pre-eclampsia, leptin, ratio of leptin to total or HMW adiponectin, and ratio of FABP4 to total or HMW adiponectin, were increased (p < 0.05), while total adiponectin was decreased (p < 0.05); and (2) in normotensive diabetic vs non-diabetic women, total adiponectin was elevated (p < 0.05). At Visits 2 and 3: (1) the primary findings in the two diabetic groups persisted, and FABP4 also increased in women with subsequent pre-eclampsia (p < 0.05); and (2) there were no differences between the two normotensive groups. By logistic regression analyses after covariate adjustment (HbA1c, insulin kg-1 day-1 and gestational age), the best predictive models for pre-eclampsia were as follows: Visit 1, doubling of leptin, OR 9.0 (p < 0.01); Visit 2, doubling of the leptin:total adiponectin ratio, OR 3.7 (p < 0.05); and Visit 3, doubling of FABP4 concentration, OR 25.1 (p < 0.01). The associations were independent of BMI. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION As early as the first trimester in type 1 diabetic women, adipokine profiles that suggest insulin resistance are associated with subsequent pre-eclampsia, possibly reflecting maternal characteristics that precede pregnancy. These associations persist in the second and third trimesters, and are independent of BMI. Insulin resistance may predispose women with type 1 diabetes to pre-eclampsia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and lipids may relate to preeclampsia and preterm birth risk but longitudinal data are lacking. This study examines these biomarkers longitudinally during pregnancy in relation to preeclampsia and preterm birth risk. METHODS Maternal serum samples from the Calcium for Preeclampsia Prevention (CPEP) trial were analyzed at baseline: average 15 gestational weeks; mid-pregnancy: average 27 weeks; and at >34 weeks. We measured RBP4, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides and lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)). Cross-sectional logistic regression analyses estimated the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for preterm preeclampsia (n = 63), term preeclampsia (n = 104), and preterm delivery (n = 160) associated with RBP4 and lipids at baseline and mid-pregnancy compared with controls (n = 136). Longitudinal trajectories across pregnancy were assessed using mixed linear models with fixed effects. Adjusted models included clinical and demographic factors. RESULTS RBP4 concentrations at baseline and mid-pregnancy were associated with a 4- to 8-fold increase in preterm preeclampsia risk but were not associated with term preeclampsia. RBP4 measured mid-pregnancy was also associated with preterm birth (OR = 6.67, 95% CI: 1.65, 26.84). Higher triglyceride concentrations in mid-pregnancy were associated with a 2- to 4-fold increased risk for both preeclampsia and preterm birth. Longitudinal models demonstrate that both preterm preeclampsia and preterm birth cases had elevated RBP4 throughout gestation. CONCLUSIONS Elevated RBP4 is detectable early in pregnancy and its strong relation with preterm preeclampsia merits further investigation and confirmation to evaluate its potential use as a predictor, particularly among high-risk women.

Abstract
AIM Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a disorder of pregnancy associated with maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. The aim of the present study was to use proteomics to identify biomarkers of, and elucidate the pathogenesis of, PE. METHODS Serum samples were analyzed using peptide ligand library beads (PLLB) on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry. Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) was used as the target protein for further validation on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunohistochemistry and real-time polymerase chain reaction. Transwell invasion assay was used to evaluate whether RBP4 affects the invasive ability of trophoblast tumor cells. RESULTS Twenty upregulated and 17 downregulated proteins were differentially expressed between severe PE patients and healthy pregnant women. Those proteins were further classified according to molecular function and biological process according to the gene ontology terms. RBP4 concentration was significantly lower in women with severe PE than in those with healthy pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS RBP4 is able to function as biomarker to distinguish severe PE from normal pregnancy. More importantly, these results may shed light on the role of RPB4 in the pathogenesis in PE. Further studies are required to validate these results, and determine the precise role of RBP4 in the pathogenesis of PE.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a complication of pregnancy that is characterized by impaired glucose tolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. The reported prevalence of GDM varies between 0.6% and 20% of pregnancies depending on screening method, gestational age and the population studied. GDM is characterized by pancreatic β-cell function that is insufficient to meet the body's insulin needs. Available evidence suggests that β-cell defects in GDM result from the same spectrum of causes that underline hyperglycemia in general, including autoimmune disease, monogenic causes and insulin resistance. Adipokines are proteins secreted from the adipocytes and are believed to have a metabolic influence. Our review suggests that, in GDM, various adipokines, mainly leptin and adiponectin, are dysregulated. These two adipokines might have both prognostic and pathophysiological significance in this disease.

Abstract
Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a novel adipocyte-derived cytokine playing an important role in the regulation of energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Although the association between RBP4 and metabolic dysfunction is well established, studies on the relationship between circulating RBP4 levels and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have yielded inconclusive results. We performed a meta-analysis to investigate whether women with GDM had higher circulating RBP4 levels than the normglycemic pregnant women. PubMed, Web of Science and EMBASE were searched up to 1 August 2014. A total of 14 studies comprised of 884 women with GDM and 1251 normglycemic pregnant women were included. The overall results suggested that maternal circulating RBP4 levels were significantly higher in GDM than their normal controls (SMD: 0.49 μg/ml, 95% CI: 0.23-0.75 μg/ml, p < 0.001, random effect model). However, stratified results indicated that this significant difference only existed in the second/third trimester and was limited to Asian populations. Furthermore, subgroup analysis according to matched maternal age and BMI still demonstrated that GDM had higher circulating RBP4 levels than the normal controls. Our findings suggested that Asian women with GDM had increased circulating RBP4 levels in their second/third trimester.

Abstract
Obesity is a global and dramatic public health problem; maternal obesity represents one of the main risk factors of infertility and pregnancy complications as it is associated with adverse maternal and offspring outcomes. In the last few years, adipose tissue dysfunction associated with altered adipocytokine secretion has been suggested to play a critical role in all the phases of reproductive process. Obesity is a nutrition-related disorder. In this regard, dietary intervention strategies, such as high intake of fruit and vegetables, have shown significant effects in both preserving health and counteracting obesity-associated diseases. Evidence has been provided that polyphenols, important constituents of plant-derived food, can influence developmental program of oocyte and embryo, as well as pregnancy progression by modulating several cellular pathways. This review will examine the controversial results so far obtained on adipocytokine involvement in fertility impairment and pregnancy complications. Furthermore, the different effects exerted by polyphenols on oocyte, embryo, and pregnancy development will be also taken in account.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine maternal serum levels of retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP4) at 11-13 weeks' gestation in normal and pathological pregnancies. METHODS Serum RBP4 at 11-13 weeks was measured in 480 singleton pregnancies, including 240 with normal outcome, 60 that subsequently developed preeclampsia (PE), 60 that developed gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), 60 that delivered large for gestational age (LGA) neonates and 60 that delivered small (SGA) neonates. The values in each adverse pregnancy outcome group were compared to those of normal pregnancies. RESULTS Serum concentration of RBP4 was not significantly different in women who subsequently developed PE (p=0.925), or GDM (p=0.074), or had pregnancies that led to delivery to SGA (p=0.085), LGA (p=0.332) neonates. CONCLUSION Maternal serum RBP4 in the first trimester is not significantly altered in pathological pregnancies.

Abstract
AIM We investigated association of maternal retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) with risk of gestational diabetes (GDM). METHODS GDM cases (N=173) and controls (N=187) were selected from among participants of a cohort study of risk factors of pregnancy complications. Early pregnancy (16 weeks on average) serum RBP4 concentration was measured using an ELISA-based immunoassay. Logistic regression was used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (ORs/aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS Mean serum RBP4 was significantly higher among GDM cases compared with controls (47.1 vs. 41.1 μg/ml, respectively; p-value <0.05). Participants in the highest quartile for serum RBP4 had a 1.89-fold higher risk of GDM compared with participants in the lowest quartile (95%CI: 1.05-3.43). However, this relationship did not reach statistical significance after adjustment for confounders (aOR: 1.54; 95%CI: 0.82-2.90). Women who were ≥35 years old and who had high RBP4 (≥38.3 μg/ml, the median) had a 2.31-fold higher risk of GDM compared with women who were <35 years old and had low RBP4 (<38.3 μg/ml) (aOR: 2.31; 95%CI: 1.26-4.23; p-value for interaction=0.021). CONCLUSION Overall, there is modest evidence of a positive association of early pregnancy elevated RBP4 concentration with increased GDM risk, particularly among women with advanced age.

Abstract
Serum retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is the sole specific vitamin A (retinol) transporter in blood. Elevation of serum RBP4 in patients has been linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetic retinopathy. However, the significance of RBP4 elevation in the pathogenesis of these vascular diseases is unknown. Here we show that RBP4 induces inflammation in primary human retinal capillary endothelial cells (HRCEC) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) by stimulating expression of proinflammatory molecules involved in leukocyte recruitment and adherence to endothelium, including vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), E-selectin, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). We demonstrate that these novel effects of RBP4 are independent of retinol and the RBP4 membrane receptor STRA6 and occur in part via activation of NADPH oxidase and NF-κB. Importantly, retinol-free RBP4 (apo-RBP4) was as potent as retinol-bound RBP4 (holo-RBP4) in inducing proinflammatory molecules in both HRCEC and HUVEC. These studies reveal that RBP4 elevation can directly contribute to endothelial inflammation and therefore may play a causative role in the development or progression of vascular inflammation during cardiovascular disease and microvascular complications of diabetes.

Abstract
Adiponectin was reported recently to have roles in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Moreover, elevation of adiponectin and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) has been observed in preeclampsia. We examined the possible links between adiponectin and BNP in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. We performed a cross-sectional study in 56 preeclampsia patients and 56 controls matched for gestational age and body mass index. The BNP, leptin, and adiponectin levels were measured by ELISA, and their mRNA expressions were evaluated in omental adipose tissue by real-time PCR. The effects of BNP on adiponectin and leptin mRNA expression and secretion were investigated in primary cultures of adipocytes from obese and normal-weight women. The BNP, adiponectin, and leptin levels were significantly higher in preeclampsia patients compared with controls. The adiponectin level was increased significantly in normal-weight preeclampsia patients compared with overweight preeclampsia patients. Adiponectin mRNA expression was increased significantly in adipose tissues of preeclampsia patients compared with controls and was also increased significantly in normal-weight preeclampsia patients compared with overweight preeclampsia patients, whereas leptin was not. BNP and adiponectin showed significant positive correlations in both normal-weight and overweight preeclampsia patients. BNP had a significantly weaker effect on adiponectin in overweight compared with normal-weight preeclampsia patients. Moreover, BNP had a weaker effect on adiponectin production in adipocytes from overweight women compared with adipocytes from normal-weight women using primary culture of human adipocytes. These data suggested that BNP may play a role in hyperadiponectinemia of preeclampsia patients. The weaker effect of BNP on adiponectin production may participate in the pathophysiology of overweight preeclampsia patients.

Abstract
Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) has been reported to decrease insulin resistance, while obesity and insulin resistance may also be involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. We examined whether a CAR ligand, 1,4-bis(2-(3,5-dichloropyridyloxy)) benzene (TCPOBOP), can ameliorate the signs of preeclampsia in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese pregnant mice to examine a possibility of CAR as a therapeutic target. We employed six groups including non-pregnant, HFD-fed or control diet-fed pregnant mice with or without TCPOBOP treatment (n=6). In HFD pregnant mice, insulin resistance increased with increasing expression of gluconeogenic and lipogenic genes and abnormal adipocytokine levels. TCPOBOP treatment, which was once-weekly intraperitoneal injections (0.5 mg/kg) and started at day 0.5 of pregnancy, improved glucose tolerance with significant changes of gluconeogenic, lipogenic and adipocytokine genes. HFD pregnant mice had hypertension and proteinuria, while TCPOBOP treatment ameliorated these signs. Our data suggested CAR might be a potential therapeutic target for obese preeclampsia patients with insulin resistance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Preeclampsia (PE) is a cause of glomerulopathy worldwide. Urinary retinol-binding protein (RBP) is a marker of proximal tubular dysfunction, albuminuria is an endothelial injury marker, urine protein:creatinine ratio (PCR) may have a predictive value for renal disease later in life, and, recently, podocyturia has been proposed as a sensitive tool in pregnancy, but it needs to be tested. The aim of this study was to evaluate renal involvement in PE and healthy pregnancy. METHODS Case-control study with 39 pregnant women assessed after 20 weeks of gestation (25 in the control group, CG, and 14 in the PE group) by performing urinary tests. RESULTS Mean (±SD) age and gestational age of the CG were 26.9 ± 6.4 years and 37.1 ± 5.0 weeks, and of the PE group 26.4 ± 6.9 years and 30.6 ± 5.6 weeks, respectively (p = 0.001). Mean (±SD) urinary RBP (p = 0.017), albuminuria (p = 0.002), and urinary albumin concentration (UAC) ratio (p = 0.006) of the CG were 0.4 ± 0.7 mg/l, 7.3 ± 6.9 mg/l, and 8.2 ± 6.7 mg/g and of the PE group 2.0 ± 4.4 mg/l, 2,267.4 ± 2,130.8 mg/l (p = 0.002), and 3,778.9 ± 4,296.6 mg/g (p = 0.006), respectively. Mean (±SD) urine PCR in the PE group was 6.7 ± 6.1 g/g (p < 0.001). No statistical differences were found between podocyturia in the CG and PE group (p = 0.258). CONCLUSIONS Urinary RBP, PCR, albuminuria, and UAC ratio were elevated in the PE group in comparison to the CG. Podocyturia did not predict PE.

Abstract
Proteins secreted from adipocytes - so-called adipokines - influence metabolic and vascular function. Recent data suggest that various adipokines are dysregulated in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-eclampsia (PE) and might be of pathophysiological and prognostic significance in these complications of pregnancy. This review gives an overview on the regulation and pathophysiology of leptin and adiponectin in GDM and PE. Furthermore, data on novel adipokines including resistin, visfatin, retinol-binding protein 4 and vaspin are summarized.
