Abstract
COVID-19 has caused severe consequences in terms of public health and economy worldwide since its outbreak in December 2019. SARS-CoV-2 3C-like protease (3CLpro), crucial for the viral replications, is an attractive target for the development of antiviral drugs. In this study, several kinds of Michael acceptor warheads were utilized to hunt for potent covalent inhibitors against 3CLpro. Meanwhile, novel 3CLpro inhibitors with the P3-3,5-dichloro-4-(2-(dimethylamino)ethoxy)phenyl moiety were designed and synthesized which may form salt bridge with residue Glu166. Among them, two compounds 12b and 12c exhibited high inhibitory activities against SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro. Further investigations suggested that 12b with an acrylate warhead displayed potent activity against HCoV-OC43 (EC50 = 97 nM) and SARS-CoV-2 replicon (EC50 = 45 nM) and low cytotoxicity (CC50 > 10 μM) in Huh7 cells. Taken together, this study devised two series of 3CLpro inhibitors and provided the potent SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro inhibitor (12b) which may be used for treating coronavirus infections.

Abstract
Thrombosis is a common clinical feature associated with morbidity and mortality in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients. Cytokine storm in COVID-19 increases patients' systemic inflammation, which can cause multiple health consequences. In this work, we aimed to indicate the effect of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination on the modulation of monocyte chemoattractant protein-3 (MCP-3), matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels, and other systemic inflammatory biomarkers that associates with COVID-19 severity in patients who suffers from thrombosis consequences. For this purpose, ninety people were collected from Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital and divided into three groups each of which contained 30 people, 15 of them were venous thromboembolism (VTE) positive and the other were VTE negative. The three groups were non-vaccinated COVID-19, vaccinated COVID-19, and control. The levels of MCP-3 and TNF-α were significantly (p < 0.05) increased in vaccinated and non-vaccinated COVID-19 patients regardless of their thrombosis condition, while MMP-1 level was non-significantly (p > 0.05) higher in vaccinated patients compared to control. MCP-3 and TNF-α were correlated positively with D-dimer (r = 0.544 and r = 0.513, respectively) in non-vaccinated patients, while MMP-1 and TNF-α were correlated positively with D-dimer (r = 0.624 and r = 0.575, respectively) in vaccinated patients. The odds ratio of MCP-3 (2.252), MMP-1 (1.062), and TNF-α (1.360) were reduced in vaccinated patients (2.093, 1.022, and 1.301 for MCP-3, MMP-1, and TNF-α respectively). Thus, MCP-3 plays a vital role in COVID-19 pathophysiology, and vaccination can reduce the risk of developing VTE in COVID-19 patients, and improve the inflammatory condition of patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection during the peripartum period and obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS). METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including all singleton vaginal deliveries and cesarean deliveries due to failed vacuum extraction, between June 2020 and January 2022 at a large tertiary medical center. OASIS complication during childbirth was compared between women with and without peripartum diagnosis of COVID-19, defined as a positive polymerase chain reaction test obtained within 1 week before delivery or up to 3 days after delivery. Universal screening for COVID-19 was implemented. A logistic regression model was used to adjust for confounding variables. RESULTS The study included 22 911 women, among whom 468 (2.0%) tested positive for COVID-19 and 22 443 women had no COVID-19 diagnosis. After adjusting for confounding variables, peripartum infection with COVID-19 was found to be independently associated with OASIS (adjusted odds ratio 4.38, 95% confidence interval 2.00-9.61; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Infection with COVID-19 during the peripartum period significantly increases the risk for OASIS by more than fourfold. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding the impact of COVID-19 on birth complications, such as OASIS, to improve public health measures and enhance obstetric outcomes during pandemics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate oral mucosal changes in patients with confirmed moderate-scale severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. METHODS We analyzed 85 COVID-19 patients (50 males, 35 females) with an average age of 53.6 years, treated at the prehospital infectious disease center and Aldent University Clinic in Tirana, Albania, from May 2021 to June 2022. RESULTS Elevated C-reactive protein levels were observed in 82 patients (±44.20), with 20 patients showing significant fibrinogen increase (mean ± 5.85 g/L), and 22 patients having elevated D-Dimer (mean ± 336.6 mg/mL). Despite the absence of anticoagulant history, 13 patients exhibited bleeding. Xerodermia, xerostomia, and angular cheilitis were noted, with 41 patients displaying angular cheilitis. In 82 patients, oral mucosal and tongue examinations revealed color changes from white to bright yellow, with brown edema. Pigmentation in the fixed gingiva of upper and lower front teeth was observed in 35 patients. CONCLUSIONS Oral mucosal changes during COVID-19 appear more influenced by drug treatment and disease progression than the infection itself, suggesting that secondary factors play a significant role. Despite the oral cavity's potential for viral entry, these changes seem connected to other underlying causes.

Abstract
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) has emerged as the causative agent behind the global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). As the scientific community strives to comprehend the intricate workings of this virus, a fundamental aspect lies in deciphering the myriad proteins it expresses. This knowledge is pivotal in unraveling the complexities of the viral machinery and devising targeted therapeutic interventions. The proteomic landscape of SARS-CoV2 encompasses structural, non-structural, and open-reading frame proteins, each playing crucial roles in viral replication, host interactions, and the pathogenesis of COVID-19. This comprehensive review aims to provide an updated and detailed examination of the structural and functional attributes of SARS-CoV2 proteins. By exploring the intricate molecular architecture, we have highlighted the significance of these proteins in viral biology. Insights into their roles and interplay contribute to a deeper understanding of the virus's mechanisms, thereby paving the way for the development of effective therapeutic strategies. Abstract
(1) Background: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been recognized that a considerable proportion of critically ill patients may die of this disease. The current study aims to assess the overall 1-year outcomes within the UMFST COVID-19 Unit, providing valuable insights into the efficacy of specialized care facilities in managing severe cases of COVID-19. (2) Methods: This is a retrospective monocentric observational study including 294 patients confirmed to have SARS-CoV-2 infection. Demographic data and clinical and paraclinical parameters were assessed. Survival probabilities were estimated using Kaplan-Meier curves. (3) Results: Overall, the 1-year mortality was 89.4%. All deaths occurred in-hospital, with two patients dying after 28 days. Diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney failure, cerebrovascular disease, and atrial fibrillation were more prevalent in deceased patients. Thirty percent of patients needed endotracheal intubation during the first 24 h. The incidence of hospital-acquired pneumonia was higher among deceased patients. The SOFA score was significantly different between deceased vs. survivors. The survival analysis showed that the use of noradrenaline increased the likelihood of surviving COVID-19. (4) Conclusions: The severe comorbidities of the patients were the primary factors contributing to the increased mortality rate in the COVID-19 unit.

Abstract
This study investigates the treatment of combined wastewater from Hattar Industrial Estate using Biofilm Wetlands (BW) planted with monoculture species: Eichhornia crassipes (EAC), Pistia stratiotes (WL), and Arundo donax (GR). Each species showed distinct capabilities in organic degradation, metal uptake, and pH stabilization. BW2, planted with EAC, achieved the highest total solids (TS) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal efficiencies of 66% and 65%, respectively. GR effectively reduced initial COD concentrations from 232 mg/L to 58.67 mg/L, while EAC and WL reached reductions to 72.78 mg/L and 70.67 mg/L, respectively. Overall, the plant efficiency ranking was EAC > GR > WL. These findings underscore the potential of these plant species in synergistic BW systems, highlighting their role as natural solutions for remediating complex industrial effluents. This research contributes to advancing eco-friendly wastewater treatment approaches, suggesting promising applications for sustainable practices in industrial contexts.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTSThis research assessed the effectiveness of phytoremediation using Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Arundo donax for removing pollutants i.e. heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Hg) nitrates, phosphates and sulfates from combined industrial wastewater of Hattar Industrial Estate Pakistan.It highlighted the potential of selected plant species' as natural treatment systems, providing crucial insights into their efficiency.Findings contribute to understanding nature-based solutions for complex industrial effluents.

Abstract
Minks, cats, and some other species of carnivores are susceptible of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and have a high risk of transmitting SARS-CoV-2 to humans. The development of animal vaccines can be an effective measure to protect animals against SARS-CoV-2 and reduce the potential risk of human infection. We previously developed a messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine SYS6006 that has been proven to be an efficient coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine widely used in humans. Here, we further evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of SYS6006 as an animal COVID-19 vaccine candidate for SARS-CoV-2 susceptible animals or wild animals. SYS6006 was safe and immunogenic in mice and completely protected mice against mouse-adapted SARS-CoV-2 infection in the upper and lower respiratory tracts. SYS6006 was able to induce neutralizing antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 wild-type, Delta, and Omicron BA.2 strain on day 7 after prime immunization, and two doses of immunization could enhance the neutralizing antibody responses and produce long-lasting potent antibodies for more than 8 months in minks and cats, blue foxes, and raccoon dogs, while all immunized animals had no abnormal clinical signs during immunization. These results provided here warrant further development of this safe and efficacious mRNA vaccine platform against animal COVID-19.

Abstract
In this review, we successively present the methods for phenomenological modeling of the evolution of reported and unreported cases of COVID-19, both in the exponential phase of growth and then in a complete epidemic wave. After the case of an isolated wave, we present the modeling of several successive waves separated by endemic stationary periods. Then, we treat the case of multi-compartmental models without or with age structure. Eventually, we review the literature, based on 260 articles selected in 11 sections, ranging from the medical survey of hospital cases to forecasting the dynamics of new cases in the general population. This review favors the phenomenological approach over the mechanistic approach in the choice of references and provides simulations of the evolution of the number of observed cases of COVID-19 for 10 states (California, China, France, India, Israel, Japan, New York, Peru, Spain and United Kingdom).

Abstract
Since the start of 2020, COVID-19 has profoundly impacted global health. Classically, the disease manifests with pulmonary symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, pneumonia, and respiratory distress. However, it is important to note that in addition to these pulmonary symptoms, COVID-19 can present with extrapulmonary symptoms. This case report involves an 82-year-old male who tested positive for the causative agent of COVID-19 - severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), whose presentation manifested with gastrointestinal symptoms in the form of colonic ileus. This report aims to highlight the pathophysiological mechanisms of COVID-19-associated ileus while also delving into the importance of timely intervention to prevent complications like intestinal perforation.

Abstract
COVID-19 is associated with various cardiovascular complications, including arrhythmias. This study investigated the incidence of new-onset atrial fibrillation (AFB) and atrial flutter (AFL) in COVID-19 patients and identified potential risk factors. We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a tertiary-care safety-net community hospital including 647 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from March 2020 to March 2021. Patients with a prior history of AFB or AFL were excluded. Data on demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes were collected and analyzed using chi-square tests, t-tests, and binary logistic regression. We found that 69 patients (10.66%) developed AFB or AFL, with 41 patients (6.34%) experiencing new-onset arrhythmias. The incidence rates for new-onset AFB and AFL were 5.4% and 0.9%, respectively. Older age (≥65 years) was significantly associated with new-onset AFB/AFL (OR: 5.43; 95% CI: 2.31-12.77; p < 0.001), as was the development of sepsis (OR: 2.73; 95% CI: 1.31-5.70; p = 0.008). No significant association was found with patient sex. Our findings indicate that new-onset atrial arrhythmias are a significant complication in COVID-19 patients, particularly among the elderly and those with sepsis. This highlights the need for targeted monitoring and management strategies to mitigate the burden of atrial arrhythmias in high-risk populations during COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES External validation of the 4C and NEWS2 scores for the prediction of in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients, and evaluation of its operational performance in two time periods: before and after the start of the vaccination program in Colombia. METHODS Retrospective cohort in three high complexity hospitals in the city of Medellín, Colombia, between June 2020 and April 2022. RESULTS The areas under the ROC curve (AUC) for the 4C mortality risk score and the NEWS2 were 0.75 (95% CI 0.73-0.78) and 0.68 (95% CI 0.66-0.71), respectively. For the 4C score, the AUC for the first and second periods was 0.77 (95% CI 0.74-0.80) and 0.75 (95% CI 0.71-0.78); whilst for the NEWS2 score, it was 0.68 (95% CI 0.65-0.71) and 0.69 (95% CI 0.64-0.73). The calibration for both scores was adequate, albeit with reduced performance during the second period. CONCLUSIONS The 4C mortality risk score proved to be the more adequate predictor of in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients in this Latin American population. The operational performance during both time periods remained similar, which shows its utility notwithstanding major changes, including vaccination, as the pandemic evolved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND SARS-CoV-2 can damage human placentas, leading to pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia and premature birth. This study investigates the histopathological changes found in COVID-19-affected placentas. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 23 placentas from patients with active COVID-19 during delivery and 22 samples from patients without COVID-19 infection in their medical history. The samples underwent histopathological examination for pathology, such as trophoblast necrosis, signs of vessel damage, or fetal vascular malperfusion. RESULTS Newborns from the research group have lower weights and Apgar scores than healthy newborns. In the COVID-19 group, calcifications and collapsed intervillous space were more frequent, and inflammation was more severe than in the healthy group. At the same time, the placenta of SARS-CoV-2-positive patients showed signs of accelerated vascular maturation. Trophoblast necrosis was found only in the placentas of the research group. The expression of CD68+ was elevated in the COVID-19 cohort, suggesting that macrophages constituted a significant part of the inflammatory infiltrate. The increase in lymphocyte B markers was associated with placental infarctions, while high levels of CD3+, specific for cytotoxic T lymphocytes, correlated with vascular injury. CONCLUSIONS SARS-CoV-2 is associated with pathological changes in the placenta, including trophoblast necrosis, calcification, and accelerated villous maturation. Those changes appear to be driven by T cells and macrophages, whose increased expression reflects ongoing histiocytic intervillositis in the placenta.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The proportional trends of HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) according to various factors have not been analyzed in detail in previous studies. We aimed to evaluate the trends of HPV-associated OPSCC in the United States. METHODS This retrospective cohort study included 13,081 patients with OPSCC from large population-based data using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 2010-2017 database, 17 Registries. Patients were diagnosed with OPSCC primarily in the base of tongue (BOT), posterior pharyngeal wall (PPW), soft palate (SP), and tonsil and were tested for HPV infection status. We analyzed how the proportional trends of patients with OPSCC changed according to various demographic factors. Additionally, we forecasted and confirmed the trend of HPV (+) and (-) patients with OPSCC using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. RESULTS The proportion of patients who performed the HPV testing increased every year, and it has exceeded 50% since 2014 (21.95% and 51.37% at 2010 and 2014, respectively). The HPV-positive rates tended to increase over past 7 years (66.37% and 79.32% at 2010 and 2016, respectively). Positivity rates of HPV were significantly higher in OPSCC located in the tonsil or BOT than in those located in PPW or SP. The ARIMA (2,1,0) and (0,1,0) models were applied to forecast HPV (+) and (-) patients with OPSCC, respectively, and the predicted data generally matched the actual data well. CONCLUSION This large population-based study suggests that the proportional trends of HPV (+) patients with OPSCC has increased and will continue to increase. However, the trends of HPV (+) and (-) patients differed greatly according to various demographic factors. These results present a direction for establishing appropriate preventive measures to deal with HPV-related OPSCC in more detail.

Abstract
Evolutionary epidemiology models have substantially impacted the study of various infections and prevention methods in the biology field. These models are called Susceptible, Lockdown, Vaccinated, Infected, and Recovered (SLVIR) epidemic dynamics. We explore how human behavior, particularly in the context of disease transmission, is influenced by two intervention strategies: vaccination and lockdown, both of which are grounded in the principles of evolutionary game theory (EGT). This comprehensive study using evolutionary game theory delves into the dynamics of epidemics, explicitly focusing on the transition rate from susceptibility to immunity and susceptibility to lockdown measures. Our research involves a thorough analysis of the structural aspects of the SLVIR epidemic model, which delineates disease-free equilibria to ensure stability in the system. Our investigation supports the notion that implementing lockdown measures effectively reduces the required level of vaccinations to curtail the prevalence of new infections. Furthermore, it highlights that combining both strategies is particularly potent when an epidemic spreads rapidly. In regions where the disease spreads comparatively more, our research demonstrates that lockdown measures are more effective in reducing the spread of the disease than relying solely on vaccines. Through significant numerical simulations, our research illustrates that integrating lockdown measures and efficient vaccination strategies can indirectly lower the risk of infection within the population, provided they are both dependable and affordable. The outcomes reveal a nuanced and beneficial scenario where we examine the interplay between the evolution of vaccination strategies and lockdown measures, assessing their coexistence through indicators of average social payoff.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there were under-recognized and unaddressed psychosomatic health problems among medical staff. The purpose of this study was to investigate their psychosomatic status. METHODS An online questionnaire was performed to the medical staff of major hospitals in Jinan in January 2023. In total, 1244 valid questionnaires were collected, and their psychosomatic status was assessed by the Psychosomatic Symptom Scale (PSSS) and Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10). Finally, we analyzed the influencing factors for their psychosomatic status. RESULTS The psychological health of the medical staff was poor, and the level of stress perception was intense, accompanied by obvious psychosomatic symptoms. Regression analysis indicated that age, gender, frontline involvement, work experience, marriage, presence of disease history and COVID-19 infection history were risk factors for psychosomatic symptoms, while education, frontline involvement and presence of disease history were risk factors for stress feeling. CONCLUSION Medical staff often showed obvious psychosomatic symptoms and intense stress. Psychological health education and intervention should be given in order to improve their working quality.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the infection landscape for many pathogens. This retrospective study aimed to compare Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae) infections in pediatric CAP patients hospitalized before (2018-2019) and during (2020-2022) the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed the clinical epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns of H. influenzae from a tertiary hospital in southwest China. A total of 986 pediatric CAP patients with H. influenzae-associated infections were included. Compared to 2018, the positivity rate increased in 2019 but dropped significantly in 2020. Although it rose in the following 2 years, the rate in 2022 remained significantly lower than in 2019. Patients' age during the pandemic was significantly higher than in 2018 and 2019, while gender composition remained similar across both periods. Notably, there were significant changes in co-infections with several respiratory pathogens during the pandemic. Resistance rates of H. influenzae isolates to antibiotics varied, with the highest resistance observed for ampicillin (85.9%) and the lowest for cefotaxime (0.0%). Resistance profiles to various antibiotics underwent dramatic changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanate, cefaclor, cefuroxime, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and the proportion of multi-drug resistant (MDR) isolates significantly decreased. Additionally, MDR isolates, alongside isolates resistant to specific drugs, were notably prevalent in ampicillin-resistant and β-lactamase-positive isolates. The number of pediatric CAP patients, H. influenzae infections, and isolates resistant to certain antibiotics exhibited seasonal patterns, peaking in the winter of 2018 and 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic, sharp decreases were observed in February 2020, and there was no resurgence in December 2022. These findings indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered the infection spectrum of H. influenzae in pediatric CAP patients, as evidenced by shifts in positivity rate, demographic characteristics, respiratory co-infections, AMR patterns, and seasonal trends.

Abstract
The recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the vaccination campaign posed a challenge to patients with autoimmune disease, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed for investigating whether psychological/sociodemographic/clinical characteristics of MS patients are associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status and self-reported vaccination side effects (SEs). We have asked patients with MS about their willingness to receive recommended standard vaccinations pre-pandemically since June 2019. Between 10/2021 and 01/2022, we surveyed 193 of these MS patients about their current SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status, their perception of vaccination-related SEs, and reasons for and against SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. 75.6% of the patients declared their willingness to receive standard vaccinations before the pandemic. 84.5%, 78.2%, and 13.0% of the patients had received the first, second, and third SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, respectively, until the follow-up survey. The most common reason for not getting vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 was concern about possible side effects (82.1%), followed by the belief that the vaccines had not been adequately tested (64.3%). Vaccination-related SEs were reported by 52.8% of the patients. Younger age, higher education, lower degree of disability, relapsing disease course, shorter disease duration, not receiving a disease-modifying therapy and higher anxiety and depression levels were associated with the occurrence of certain vaccination-related SEs. Concerns about novel vaccines are widespread among MS patients and necessitate targeted education of the patients, especially to those with more severe psychopathological symptoms (anxiety or depression) and those who are generally skeptical of vaccination.

Abstract
Introduction The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift in global lifestyles as individuals sought to safeguard themselves and their loved ones from the virus. This adaptation involved embracing a distinct way of life marked by social distancing, reduced outdoor engagements, and home confinement. Consequently, this period of quarantine led to diminished social interactions, challenges in accessing essential resources such as food, heightened unemployment rates, and increased burden on healthcare systems. Understandably, these circumstances gave rise to heightened emotions including fear, depression, and anxiety. In response to these dynamics, our research aimed to explore the psychological and behavioral shifts among medical students residing in Islamabad and Rawalpindi (the twin cities of Pakistan) during the year 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A structured, self-administered questionnaire was constructed, based on previously conducted surveys, assessing the psychological impact and behavioral changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The questionnaire was made available online through Google Forms and was provided to students of the various medical colleges of the twin cities of Pakistan. The results were further stratified based on gender. Results Categorical data were collected from 400 medical students studying in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The negative psychological impact was shown by increased stress, 260 (65%), feeling of less energy, 211 (52.8%), and increased anxiety with upper respiratory symptoms, 202 (50.5%). Behavioral changes were also a reflection of the psychological changes depicted by an increased use of disinfectants, 256 (64%), increased desire to clean surfaces, 262 (65.6%), increased use of soaps and detergents, 300 (75%), reduced number of times one left their house 281, (70.3%), and decreased consumption of food products from outside, 226 (56.5%). When compared between the two genders, females had significantly increased stress levels (p=0.034), decreased food consumption from outside (p=0.026), and increased avoidance of people not wearing masks (p=0.001). Conclusion Through our study, we identified the various psychological and behavioral changes among our population due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study not only highlights these changes but also discusses the various ways to address them. This study would help relevant organizations to understand the broader aspect of how this pandemic has affected individual lives and will also give them ideas regarding how to cater to these changes in a positive way.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a sharp decline in blood donation which posed a serious threat to the clinical blood supply worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on blood donation and supply in China on a nationwide level. METHODS A comprehensive review of the published literature was performed using eight databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Ovid, Embase, CNKI, WANFANG, and VIP by searching relevant words combinations. RESULTS Twenty-seven studies were determined to be eligible and included. Among them, 21 studies reported the situation of blood donation during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. The donation of both whole blood and platelet concentrates declined (with a decline of 5%-86% for whole blood and 3%-34% for platelet concentrates), with this especially evident in February 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the pattern of blood donation and the composition of blood donors accordingly. Fifteen articles reported the supply of various blood components during the COVID-19 pandemic. The supply and usage of both packed red blood cell (PRBC) and fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) decreased (with a decrease of 4%-40% for PRBC and 9%-58% for FFP). The proportion of blood transfusions in different departments changed too. Compared to 2019, there was a decrease in surgical blood transfusions, and an increase in that used in treatments performed in emergency and internal medicine departments. CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an overall reduction of blood transfusion activities in most cities in China, in particular blood donations and blood demands.

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the food safety concerns, purchasing behaviors, and hygiene practices of individuals who contracted and did not contract the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection. A total of 2393 individuals 18-65 years years of age, 760 who contracted and 1633 who did not contract SARS-CoV-2 infection, participated in the study. Participants were administered a questionnaire to assess demographic information, food safety concerns, hygiene practices, purchasing behavior, and fear of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Results indicated that 56.3% of participants expressed concern about food safety, and 67% were concerned about infected individuals while shopping. Participants who did not contract COVID-19 had higher levels of food safety concerns and generally adhered to better hygiene practices such as handwashing, hygienic food preparation, sanitizer use, and cleaning and disinfection practices (p < 0.05). Overall, purchasing behaviors did not significantly differ by the infection status, except for a significant difference in reduced purchase frequency (p < 0.001). In addition, purchasing behavior varied in relation to fear levels (p < 0.05). As the pandemic appears to be increasingly controlled, the insights gained from managing outbreaks might contribute to improved understanding and preparedness for global pandemics and food safety education in the future.

Abstract
The increasing demand for rapid, cost-effective, and reliable diagnostic tools in personalized and point-of-care medicine is driving scientists to enhance existing technology platforms and develop new methods for detecting and measuring clinically significant biomarkers. Humanity is confronted with growing risks from emerging and recurring infectious diseases, including the influenza virus, dengue virus (DENV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Ebola virus, tuberculosis, cholera, and, most notably, SARS coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19), among others. Timely diagnosis of infections and effective disease control have always been of paramount importance. Plasmonic-based biosensing holds the potential to address the threat posed by infectious diseases by enabling prompt disease monitoring. In recent years, numerous plasmonic platforms have risen to the challenge of offering on-site strategies to complement traditional diagnostic methods like polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Disease detection can be accomplished through the utilization of diverse plasmonic phenomena, such as propagating surface plasmon resonance (SPR), localized SPR (LSPR), surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF), surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy, and plasmonic fluorescence sensors. This review focuses on diagnostic methods employing plasmonic fluorescence sensors, highlighting their pivotal role in swift disease detection with remarkable sensitivity. It underscores the necessity for continued research to expand the scope and capabilities of plasmonic fluorescence sensors in the field of diagnostics.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges worldwide. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies hold tremendous potential for tackling key aspects of pandemic management and response. In the present review, we discuss the tremendous possibilities of AI technology in addressing the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. First, we outline the multiple impacts of the current pandemic on public health, the economy, and society. Next, we focus on the innovative applications of advanced AI technologies in key areas such as COVID-19 prediction, detection, control, and drug discovery for treatment. Specifically, AI-based predictive analytics models can use clinical, epidemiological, and omics data to forecast disease spread and patient outcomes. Additionally, deep neural networks enable rapid diagnosis through medical imaging. Intelligent systems can support risk assessment, decision-making, and social sensing, thereby improving epidemic control and public health policies. Furthermore, high-throughput virtual screening enables AI to accelerate the identification of therapeutic drug candidates and opportunities for drug repurposing. Finally, we discuss future research directions for AI technology in combating COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Though promising, barriers related to model generalization, data quality, infrastructure readiness, and ethical risks must be addressed to fully translate these innovations into real-world impacts. Multidisciplinary collaboration engaging diverse expertise and stakeholders is imperative for developing robust, responsible, and human-centered AI solutions against COVID-19 and future public health emergencies.

Abstract
Drug repositioning is critical to drug development. Previous drug repositioning methods mainly constructed drug-disease heterogeneous networks to extract drug-disease features. However, these methods faced difficulty when we are using structurally simple models to deal with complex heterogeneous networks. Therefore, in this study, the researchers introduced a drug repositioning method named DRDSA. The method utilizes a deep sparse autoencoder and integrates drug-disease similarities. First, the researchers constructed a drug-disease feature network by incorporating information from drug chemical structure, disease semantic data, and existing known drug-disease associations. Then, we learned the low-dimensional representation of the feature network using a deep sparse autoencoder. Finally, we utilized a deep neural network to make predictions on new drug-disease associations based on the feature representation. The experimental results show that our proposed method has achieved optimal results on all four benchmark datasets, especially on the CTD dataset where AUC and AUPR reached 0.9619 and 0.9676, respectively, outperforming other baseline methods. In the case study, the researchers predicted the top ten antiviral drugs for COVID-19. Remarkably, six out of these predictions were subsequently validated by other literature sources.

Abstract
Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, insomnia has become one of the longer COVID-19 symptoms. This study aimed to investigate insomnia among COVID-19 survivors and explore the occurrence and influencing factors of insomnia. A cross-sectional study was performed from December 2022 to February 2023 through an online questionnaire star survey with 8 questions. The insomnia severity index scale (ISI) was used to assess the severity of insomnia. Univariate analysis was used to analyze the factors related to COVID-19 infection. A total of 564 participants (183 males and 381 females) were surveyed in the present study. The prevalence of insomnia was 63.12%. Among these insomnia patients, there were 202 (35.82%) with sub-threshold symptoms, 116 (20.57%) with moderate symptoms, and 38 (6.74%) with severe symptoms. Univariate analysis indicated that there were statistically significant differences in the prevalence of insomnia among COVID-19 survivors of different ages, occupations, and educational levels (P < .05). Of the 356 insomnia patients, 185 (51.97%) did not take any measures against insomnia, while those who took drugs only, physical exercise only, drugs and physical exercise, and other measures were 90 (25.28%), 42 (11.80%), 17 (4.78%), and 22 (6.18%), respectively. Additionally, of the 107 insomnia patients with drug therapy, 17 (15.89%) took estazolam, 16 (14.95%) took alprazolam, 39 (36.45%) took zopiclone, and 35 (32.71%) took other drugs to improve insomnia symptoms. The prevalence of insomnia symptoms remains high among COVID-19 survivors in China. Education level and occupation may be the influencing factors. Unfortunately, most patients with insomnia do not take corresponding treatment measures.

Abstract
With the development of nanotechnology and confronting the problems of traditional pharmaceutical formulations in treating lung diseases, inhalable nano-formulations have attracted interest. Inhalable nano-formulations for treating lung diseases allow for precise pulmonary drug delivery, overcoming physiological barriers, improving aerosol lung deposition rates, and increasing drug bioavailability. They are expected to solve the difficulties faced in treating lung diseases. However, limited success has been recorded in the industrialization translation of inhalable nano-formulations. Only one relevant product has been approved by the FDA to date, suggesting that there are still many issues to be resolved in the clinical application of inhalable nano-formulations. These systems are characterized by a dependence on inhalation devices, while the adaptability of device formulation is still inconclusive, which is the most important issue impeding translational research. In this review, we categorized various inhalable nano-formulations, summarized the advantages of inhalable nano-formulations over conventional inhalation formulations, and listed the inhalable nano-formulations undergoing clinical studies. We focused on the influence of inhalation devices on nano-formulations and analyzed their adaptability. After extensive analysis of the drug delivery mechanisms, technical processes, and limitations of different inhalation devices, we concluded that vibrating mesh nebulizers might be most suitable for delivering inhalable nano-formulations, and related examples were introduced to validate our view. Finally, we presented the challenges and outlook for future development. We anticipate providing an informative reference for the field.

Abstract
Background The relationship between genetic polymorphisms and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains to be inconsistent. This meta-analysis aimed to provide an updated evaluation of the role of genetic polymorphisms in the infection, severity and mortality of COVID-19 based on all available published studies. Methods A systematic search was performed using six databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wanfang. Summary odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were used to calculate the genotypic comparison. All statistical analyses were conducted in Stata 12.0. Results A total of 62 studies with 19600 cases and 28899 controls was included in this meta-analysis. For COVID-19 infection, ACE Ins/Del polymorphism might be related with significantly decreased risk of COVID-19 infection under dominant, homozygote and allelic models. Meanwhile, the IFITM3 rs12252 and TMPRSS2 rs12329760 polymorphisms were significantly associated with the increased risk of COVID-19 infection under one or more models. Regarding COVID-19 severity, ACE2 rs2074192, ACE2 rs2106809, IFITM3 rs12252 and VDR rs1544410 polymorphisms might be related with significantly increased risk of COVID-19 severity in one or more models. Moreover, the analysis of TMPRSS2 rs2070788 indicated that a variant A allele decreased the risk of COVID-19 severity in recessive model. For COVID-19 mortality, the variant C allele of IFITM3 rs12252 polymorphism might be related with significantly increased risk of COVID-19 mortality under all genetic models. Conclusions This meta-analysis indicated that he infection, severity or mortality of COVID-19 were related to the above genetic polymorphisms, which might provide an important theoretical basis for understanding the clinical feature of COVID-19 disease.

Abstract
The emergence of long COVID during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has presented considerable challenges for healthcare professionals and researchers. The task of identifying relevant literature is particularly daunting due to the rapidly evolving scientific landscape, inconsistent definitions, and a lack of standardized nomenclature. This paper proposes a novel solution to this challenge by employing machine learning techniques to classify long COVID literature. However, the scarcity of annotated data for machine learning poses a significant obstacle. To overcome this, we introduce a strategy called medical paraphrasing, which diversifies the training data while maintaining the original content. Additionally, we propose a Data-Reweighting-Based Multi-Level Optimization Framework for Domain Adaptive Paraphrasing, supported by a Meta-Weight-Network (MWN). This innovative approach incorporates feedback from the downstream text classification model to influence the training of the paraphrasing model. During the training process, the framework assigns higher weights to the training examples that contribute more effectively to the downstream task of long COVID text classification. Our findings demonstrate that this method substantially improves the accuracy and efficiency of long COVID literature classification, offering a valuable tool for physicians and researchers navigating this complex and ever-evolving field.

Abstract
Precision genome editing is a rapidly evolving field in gene therapy, allowing for the precise modification of genetic material. The CRISPR and Cas systems, particularly the CRISPRCas9 system, have revolutionized genetic research and therapeutic development by enabling precise changes like single-nucleotide substitutions, insertions, and deletions. This technology has the potential to correct disease-causing mutations at their source, allowing for the treatment of various genetic diseases. Programmable nucleases like CRISPR-Cas9, transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), and zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs) can be used to restore normal gene function, paving the way for novel therapeutic interventions. However, challenges, such as off-target effects, unintended modifications, and ethical concerns surrounding germline editing, require careful consideration and mitigation strategies. Researchers are exploring innovative solutions, such as enhanced nucleases, refined delivery methods, and improved bioinformatics tools for predicting and minimizing off-target effects. The prospects of precision genome editing in gene therapy are promising, with continued research and innovation expected to refine existing techniques and uncover new therapeutic applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has affected physical and occupational therapist education in various ways. OBJECTIVE This study investigated whether the pandemic changed clinical placement, thus influencing the clinical competence of physical and occupational therapists at a hospital in Japan. METHODS Eleven therapists (seven physical and four occupational) participated in this study in April 2021. Clinical placement teaching methods were surveyed using an online questionnaire. The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), comprising attitudinal and technical items, was used to examine clinical competence. The results were calculated as the sum of the attitudinal and technical scores, and the ratios of these scores to the full score were compared using a paired-sample Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS During the pandemic, some schools implemented shortened practical clinical placements. The substituted classes included online-only classes and combined online and face-to-face classes. Regarding clinical competence, scores on the OSCE were mostly high. The median proportion of the total attitudinal score to the perfect score was 100% for all three items (range-of-motion test, muscle strength test, Stroke Impairment Assessment Set). The median proportion of the total technical score to the perfect score ranged from 56.7% to 76.7% for the three items. The ratio of the total attitudinal score to the full score was significantly higher than that of the total technical score to the full score (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Most clinical placements were canceled or partially administered through online learning during the pandemic. This decrease in clinical placements did not affect newly recruited physical and occupational therapists' clinical competence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute respiratory distress syndrome in the elderly with COVID-19 complicated by airway obstruction with sputum and mucus, and cases of asphyxia with blood, serous fluid, pus, or meconium in newborns and people of different ages can sometimes cause hypoxemia and death from hypoxic damage to brain cells, because the medical standard does not include intrapulmonary injections of oxygen-producing solutions. The physical-chemical repurposing of hydrogen peroxide from an antiseptic to an oxygen-producing antihypoxant offers hope for the development of new drugs. METHODS This manuscript is a meta-analysis performed according to PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS It is shown that replacement of the traditional acidic activity of hydrogen peroxide solutions by alkaline activity with pH 8.4 and heating the solutions to the temperature of +37 - +42 °C allows to repurpose hydrogen peroxide from antiseptics into inhalation and intrapulmonary mucolytics, pyolytics and antihypoxants releasing oxygen. The fact is that warm alkaline hydrogen peroxide solution (WAHPS) in local interaction with sputum, mucus, pus, blood and meconium provides optimal conditions for the metabolism of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen gas under the action of the enzyme catalase, always present in these tissues. It was established that WAHPS liquefies these biological masses due to alkaline saponification of lipid and protein-lipid complexes and simultaneously transforms dense masses into soft oxygen foam due to active enzymatic metabolism of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen gas, the rapidly appearing bubbles of which are formed by the type of "cold boiling" and literally explode these masses. The results of the first experiments showed that inhalation and intrapulmonary injections of WAHPS can significantly optimize the treatment of suffocation and hypoxemia. DISCUSSION The results showed that catalase, which is found in sputum, mucus, pus, and blood, may be a target for localized WAHPS because this enzyme provides an intensive metabolism of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen gas up to the formation of the cold boiling process. CONCLUSION These data provide a new perspective way for intrapulmonary drugs and new technologies for the emergency increase of blood oxygenation through the lungs in asphyxia with thick sputum, mucus, pus, meconium and blood.

Abstract
The global pandemic known as coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is causing morbidity and mortality on a daily basis. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV- -2) virus has been around since December 2019 and has infected a high number of patients due to its idiopathic pathophysiology and rapid transmission. COVID-19 is now deemed a newly identified "syndrome" condition since it causes a variety of unpleasant symptoms and systemic side effects following the pandemic. Simultaneously, it always becomes potentially hazardous when new variants develop during evolution. Its random viral etiology prevents accurate and suitable therapy. Despite the fact that multiple preclinical and research studies have been conducted to combat this lethal virus, and various therapeutic targets have been identified, the precise course of therapy remains uncertain. However, just a few drugs have shown efficacy in treating this viral infection in its early stages. Currently, several medicines and vaccinations have been licensed following clinical trial research, and many countries are competing to find the most potent and effective immunizations against this highly transmissible illness. For this narrative review, we used PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus to obtain epidemiological data, pre-clinical and clinical trial outcomes, and recent therapeutic alternatives for treating COVID-19 viral infection. In this study, we discussed the disease's origin, etiology, transmission, current advances in clinical diagnostic technologies, different new therapeutic targets, pathophysiology, and future therapy options for this devastating virus. Finally, this review delves further into the hype surrounding the SARS-CoV-2 illness, as well as present and potential COVID-19 therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral respiratory disease that is associated with severe damage to other human organs. It causes by a novel coronavirus, and it is spreading all over the world. To date, there is some approved vaccine or therapeutic agent which could be effective against this disease. But their effectiveness against mutated strains is not studied completely. The spike glycoprotein on the surface of the coronaviruses gives the virus the ability to bind to host cell receptors and enter cells. Inhibition of attachment of these spikes can lead to virus neutralization by inhibiting viral entrance. AIMS In this study, we tried to use the virus entrance strategy against itself by utilizing virus receptor (ACE-2) in order to design an engineered protein consisting of a human Fc antibody fragment and a part of ACE-2, which reacts with virus RBD, and we also evaluated this interaction by computational methods and in silico methods. Subsequently, we have designed a new protein structure to bind with this site and inhibit the virus from attaching to its cell receptor, mechanically or chemically. METHODS Various in silico software, bioinformatics, and patent databases were used to retrieve the requested gene and protein sequences. The physicochemical properties and possibility of allergenicity were also examined. Three-dimensional structure prediction and molecular docking were also performed to develop the most suitable therapeutic protein. RESULTS The designed protein consisted of a total of 256 amino acids with a molecular weight of 28984.62 and 5.92 as a theoretical isoelectric point. Instability and aliphatic index and grand average of hydropathicity are 49.99, 69.57 and -0.594, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In silico studies can provide a good opportunity to study viral proteins and new drugs or compounds since they do not need direct exposure to infectious agents or equipped laboratories. The suggested therapeutic agent should be further characterized in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is the most common neuromuscular junction disorder. We evaluated the MG incidence rate in the province of Ferrara, Northern Italy, over two time frames (2008-2018 and 2019-2022, i.e., the COVID-19 pandemic) and considered early-onset (EOMG), late-onset (LOMG), and thymoma- and non-thymoma-associated MG. Moreover, in the second period, we assessed its possible relationship with SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 vaccination. We used a complete enumeration approach to estimate the MG incidence and its temporal trend. For the period of 2008-18, 106 new cases were identified (mean incidence rate 2.7/100,000 people). The highest rates were observed for the over-70 age group and in rural areas, with 17% of thymoma-associated MG. During the COVID-19 period, 29 new cases were identified (average incidence rate 2.1/100,000 people), showing a marked (though not statistically significant) decrease in the mean annual incidence compared to the previous period. Again, the highest rate was observed for the over-70 age group. The first period was in line with our previous observations for the period between 1985 and 2007, highlighting a rising incidence of LOMG and a marked decrease in EOMG. During the COVID-19 period, incidence rates were lower in the first years whereas, when the pandemic ended, the previous trend was confirmed.

Abstract
The outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) is closely related to the intra-urban environment. It is important to understand the influence mechanism and risk characteristics of urban environment on infectious diseases from the perspective of urban environment composition. In this study, we used python to collect Sina Weibo help data as well as urban multivariate big data, and The random forest model was used to measure the contribution of each influential factor within to the COVID-19 outbreak. A comprehensive risk evaluation system from the perspective of urban environment was constructed, and the entropy weighting method was used to produce the weights of various types of risks, generate the specific values of the four types of risks, and obtain the four levels of comprehensive risk zones through the K-MEANS clustering of Wuhan's central urban area for zoning planning. Based on the results, we found: ①the five most significant indicators contributing to the risk of the Wuhan COVID-19 outbreak were Road Network Density, Shopping Mall Density, Public Transport Density, Educational Facility Density, Bank Density. Floor Area Ration, Poi Functional Mix ②After streamlining five indicators such as Proportion of Aged Population, Tertiary Hospital Density, Open Space Density, Night-time Light Intensity, Number of Beds Available in Designated Hospitals, the prediction accuracy of the random forest model was the highest. ③The spatial characteristics of the four categories of new crown epidemic risk, namely transmission risk, exposure risk, susceptibility risk and Risk of Scarcity of Medical Resources, were highly differentiated, and a four-level integrated risk zone was obtained by K-MEANS clustering. Its distribution pattern was in the form of "multicenter-periphery" gradient diffusion. For the risk composition of the four-level comprehensive zones combined with the internal characteristics of the urban environment in specific zones to develop differentiated control strategies. Targeted policies were then devised for each partition, offering a practical advantage over singular COVID-19 impact factor analyses. This methodology, beneficial for future public health crises, enables the swift identification of unique risk profiles in different partitions, streamlining the formulation of precise policies. The overarching goal is to maintain regular social development, harmonizing preventive measures and economic efforts.

Abstract
This study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 602 patients with first-time positive results for the HCV nucleic acid test between 1 May 2021 and 31 March 2023, exploring the association between DAA treatment and SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that 9.8% of HCV patients were co-infected with SARS-CoV-2. Gender, age, vaccination status, and HCV genotype did not significantly affect SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, patients undergoing DAA treatment showed significantly lower rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection and mortality compared to those not undergoing DAA treatment. The analysis also compared patients undergoing different DAA treatments, with Epclusa and Maviret showing superior protection against SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, this study explored the severity and mortality of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients undergoing and having completed DAA treatment. It revealed that patients diagnosed with COVID-19 during DAA treatment experienced only mild symptoms, and none died, suggesting a potential protective effect of DAA treatment against severe outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The findings contribute to the understanding of the interplay between HCV, DAA treatment, and SARS-CoV-2 infection, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and healthcare measures for individuals with chronic conditions during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Around the world, pandemics have been considered among the main hazards in the last 2 decades. Hospitals are 1 of the most important organizations responding to pandemics. The aim of this study was to design and develop a valid checklist for evaluating the hospitals' performance in response to COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time. METHODS This study is a mixed method research design that began in February, 2020 and was conducted in 3 phases: Designing a conceptual model, designing a primary checklist structure, and checklist psychometric evaluation. Known-groups method has been used to evaluate construct validity. Two groups of hospitals were compared: group A (COVID-19 Hospitals) and group B (the other hospitals). RESULTS The checklist's main structure was designed with 6 main domains, 23 sub-domains, and 152 items. The content validity ratio and index were 0.94 and 0.79 respectively. Eleven items were added, 106 items were removed, and 40 items were edited. Independent t-test showed a significant difference between the scores of the 2 groups of hospitals (P < 0.0001). Pearson correlation coefficient test also showed a high correlation between our checklist and the other. The internal consistency of the checklist was 0.98 according to Cronbach's alpha test. CONCLUSIONS Evaluating the hospitals' performance and identifying their strengths and weaknesses, can help health system policymakers and hospital managers, and leads to improved performance in response to COVID-19.

Abstract
Understanding the role of salivary constituents, such as lactoferrin, lysozyme, and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), in immune protection and defense mechanisms against microbial invasion and colonization of the airways is important in light of the ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. The salivary immune barrier in individuals affected by COVID-19 may contribute to disease prognosis. Thus, the aim of the present review is to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 vaccines on the immunological composition of saliva. IgA antibodies generated by vaccination can neutralize the virus at mucosal surfaces, whereas antimicrobial peptides, such as lysozyme and lactoferrin, have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Collectively, these components contribute to the protective immune response of the oral cavity and may help minimize viral transmission as well as the severity of COVID-19. Measuring the levels of these components in the saliva of COVID-19-vaccinated individuals can help in evaluating the vaccine's ability to induce mucosal immunity, and it might also provide insights into whether saliva can be used in diagnostics or surveillance for monitoring immune responses following vaccination. This also has implications for viral transmission.

Abstract
The constant presence of infectious diseases poses an everlasting threat to the entire world. In recent years, there has been an increased attention toward the application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the treatment of emerging infectious diseases, as it has played a significant role. The aim of this article is to provide a concise overview of the roles and mechanisms of TCM in treating infectious diseases. TCM possesses the ability to modulate relevant factors, impede signaling pathways, and inhibit microbial growth, thereby exhibiting potent antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects that demonstrate remarkable efficacy against viral and bacterial infections. This article concludes that the comprehensive regulatory features of Chinese herbal medicines, with their various components, targets, and pathways, result in synergistic effects. The significance of Chinese herbal medicines in the context of infectious diseases should not be underestimated; however, it is crucial to also acknowledge their underutilization. This paper presents constructive suggestions regarding the challenges and opportunities faced by Chinese medicines. Particularly, it emphasizes the effectiveness and characteristics of Chinese medicines in the treatment of infectious diseases, specifying how these medicines' active substances can be utilized to target infectious diseases. This perspective is advantageous in facilitating researchers' pharmacological studies on Chinese medicines, focusing on the specific points of action. The mechanism of action of Chinese herbal medicines in the treatment of infectious diseases is comprehensively elucidated in this paper, providing compelling evidence for the superior treatment of infectious diseases through Chinese medicine. This information is favorable for advancing the development of TCM and its potential applications in the field of infectious diseases.

Abstract
Purpose This study aims to identify common COVID-19 symptoms and asymptomatic infection rates during the epidemic in China. We also introduce the concepts of "Time-point asymptomatic rate" and "Period asymptomatic rate". Object and Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted online from December 2022 to January 5, 2023, collecting demographic characteristics, laboratory results, clinical symptoms, lifestyle and vaccination history. Statistical methods were used to analyze symptom characteristics, associated factors, and patterns during an 8-day observation period. Numerical variables were described by median M (Q1-Q3) or mean and standard deviation (). Categorical variables are described by frequency (N), ratio (%) or rate (%). The influencing factors were studied by Wilcoxon or Kruskal-Willis H rank sum test or logistic regression analysis, and the trend of symptom incidence by Spearman rank correlation. P value being ≤0.05 was statistically significant. Results Out of 536 participants, 493 (91.98%) were infected, with 3 asymptomatic cases and 490 symptomatic cases within 8 days. The time-point asymptomatic rate increased from 0.61% on day 1 to 15.42% on day 8. Fever, cough, and fatigue were the main symptoms, with additional symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and hyposmia reported. Symptom durations varied, with cough and expectoration lasting longer and vomiting and diarrhea lasting shorter. Several symptoms showed a downward trend over time. Conclusion Our online survey highlighted that most COVID-19 patients experienced symptoms, and the time-point asymptomatic rate showed a dynamic change among the infected population. Onset patterns and demographic factors influence symptom occurrence and duration. These findings have implications for clinical practitioners and decision-makers in public health measures and strategies.

Abstract
Although peripheral facial paralysis and sudden sensorineural hearing loss are not as common as anosmia, they are reported neurological manifestations of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We present a 62-year-old, serologically COVID-19 positive woman with seventh and eighth nerve involvement showed electrophysiologically with Auditory Brainstem Response and electroneurography and radiologically with internal acoustic canal magnetic resonance imaging. This single case report suggests a possible association between the SARS-CoV-2 infection with simultaneous sudden sensorineural hearing loss and isolated facial paralysis. However, further studies are needed to determine whether this relationship is coincidental or occasional.

Abstract
AIMS The possible role of lifestyle including diet on immunity led us to investigate the association between dietary macronutrient intake and COVID-19 in an Iranian population. METHODS Dietary intakes were recorded in the first phase of the MASHAD cohort study (started in 2007), using a 24-h dietary recall. To determine the COVID-19 incidence, data from all PCR-positive patients in Mashhad were recorded between February 2020 and June 2022. Dietary macronutrients were included in the regression model, adjusting for age and sex. System dynamical models were also applied. RESULTS The analysis included 1957 participants, including 193 COVID-19-positive patients. Dietary intakes of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and fiber were significantly lower in COVID-19 patients (P < 0.05). After adjusting for age and sex, starch and total sugar were significantly associated with COVID-19 infection ((OR = 1.0008, P = 0.001) and (OR = 1.0006, P = 0.026), respectively). There was also a significant association between dietary fiber intake and hospitalization (OR = 0.99, P = 0.018). In the dynamical system models, dietary intakes of cholesterol, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and total sugar above 180.2 mg, 13.11 g, and 79.53 mg, respectively, were associated with an increased susceptibility to COVID-19 infection, while dietary fiber had a protective role. CONCLUSION Dietary intake of starch and total sugars was associated with increased odds of COVID-19, while fiber intake decreased the odds of hospitalization due to COVID-19. The dynamical system models showed that dietary intake of cholesterol, PUFAs, and total sugar was associated with an increased risk of COVID-19, while fiber had a protective role.

Abstract
s-Triazine possesses an auspicious status in the field of drug discovery and development owing to its presence in many naturally occurring compounds as well as commercially available drugs like enasidenib, gedatolisib, bimiralisib, atrazine, indaziflam, and triaziflam. Easy, cost-effective, and efficient access to its derivatives in addition to their splendid biological activities such as anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anticonvulsant, anti-tubercular, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, makes it an attractive heterocyclic nucleus in the field of medicinal chemistry. Other than the direct access of its derivatives from simple commercially available starting materials like amidine, the s-triazine derivatives have also been obtained starting from an inexpensive commercially available 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (TCT) commonly known as cyanuric chloride. Owing to the high reactivity and the possibility of sequential substitution of TCT, a variety of biologically active heterocyclic scaffolds have been installed on this nucleus in order to have more potent compounds. These s-triazine-based heterocyclic hybrids have been reported to show enhanced biological activities in recent years. Therefore, it is important to summarize and highlight recent examples of these hybrids which is imperative to attract the attention of the drug development community.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The negative effects of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on patients with gastric cancer are poorly understood. This study was designed to compare the short-term and long-term outcomes of patients with gastric cancer in the same period before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS We retrospectively collected consecutive patients with definite diagnosis of gastric cancer at our center between 1 January and 30 June of 2019 (Before COVID-19) and 2020 (During COVID-19). A comparison was made between the number of patients and their characteristics before and during the COVID-19 epidemic. Propensity score matching (PSM) at 1:1 ratio was performed to evaluate the outcomes of patients that underwent laparoscopic radical gastrectomy in two groups. RESULT The total number of patients diagnosed with gastric cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic increased by 21.4%, compared to that before the COVID-19 pandemic. AII the qualified patients were divided Before COVID-19 Pandemic group (BCP n = 99) and During COVID-19 Pandemic group (DCP n = 118). PSM yielded 81 patients with comparable baseline characteristics into each group. Compared to the BCP group, the DCP group had longer surgery time(P = 0.011), more blood loss(P = 0.015), longer postoperative hospital stay(P = 0.002). No statistical differences were observed in terms of type of resection, number of retrieved lymph nodes (LNs), pathology, short-term and long-term complications (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Patients diagnosed with gastric cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic had comparable short-term outcomes and long-term complications, but worse peri-operative outcomes, compared to that before the COVID-19 pandemic. Further research is needed to investigate long-term outcomes.

Abstract
To compare the diagnostic effectiveness of chest computed tomography (CT) utilizing a single- versus a dual-reviewer approach in patients with pneumonia secondary to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), we conducted a retrospective observational study of data from a cross-section of 4809 patients with probable SARS-CoV-2 from March to November 2020. All patients had a CT radiological report and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results. A dual-reviewer approach was applied to two groups while conducting a comparative examination of the data. Reviewer 1 reported 108 patients negative and 374 patients positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in group A, and 266 negative and 142 positive in group B. Reviewer 2 reported 150 patients negative and 332 patients positive for COVID-19 in group A, and 277 negative and 131 positive in group B. The consensus result reported 87 patients negative and 395 positive for COVID-19 in group A and 274 negative and 134 positive in group B. These findings suggest that a dual-reviewer approach improves chest CT diagnosis compared to a conventional single-reviewer approach.

Abstract
Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 caused the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), which rapidly became a pandemic, claiming millions of lives. Apart from the main manifestations of this infection concerning the respiratory tract, such as pneumonia, there are also many manifestations from the gastrointestinal tract. Of these, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract is a significant complication quite dangerous for life. This bleeding is divided into upper and lower, and the primary pathophysiological mechanism is the entering of the virus into the host cells through the Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors. Also, other comorbidities and the medication of corticosteroids and anticoagulants are considered to favor the occurrence of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). Methods: This systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and the studies were searched in two different databases (Scopus and PubMed) from November 2019 until February 2023. All studies that reported GIB events among COVID-19 patients were included. Results: 33 studies were selected and reviewed to estimate the prevalence of GIB. A total of 134,905 patients with COVID-19 were included in these studies, and there were 1458 episodes of GIB. The prevalence of GIB, in these 33 studies, ranges from 0.47% to 19%. This range of prevalence is justified by the characteristics of the COVID-19 patients. These characteristics are the severity of COVID-19, anticoagulant and other drug treatments, the selection of only patients with gastrointestinal manifestations, etc. The pooled prevalence of gastrointestinal bleeding was estimated to be 3.05%, rising to 6.2% when only anticoagulant patients were included. Conclusions: GIB in COVID-19 patients is not a rare finding, and its appropriate and immediate treatment is necessary as it can be life-threatening. The most common clinical findings are melena and hematemesis, which characterize upper GIB. Treatment can be conservative; however, endoscopic management of bleeding with embolization is deemed necessary in some cases.

Abstract
Based on the modification of carbon paste electrode with NiCo2O4 nanoplates and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, a new electrochemical sensing platform for the sensing of favipiravir (a drug with potential therapeutic efficacy in treating COVID-19 patients) in the presence of acetaminophen was prepared. For determining the electrochemical behavior of favipiravir, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and chronoamperometry have been utilized. When compared to the unmodified carbon paste electrode, the results of the cyclic voltammetry showed that the proposed NiCo2O4 nanoplates/1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate/carbon paste electrode had excellent catalytic activity for the oxidation of the favipiravir in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.0). This was due to the synergistic influence of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (ionic liquid) and NiCo2O4 nanoplates. In the optimized conditions of favipiravir measurement, NiCo2O4 nanoplates/1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate/carbon paste electrode had several benefits, such as a wide dynamic linear between 0.004 and 115.0 µM, a high sensitivity of 0.1672 µA/µM, and a small limit of detection of 1.0 nM. Furthermore, the NiCo2O4 nanoplates/1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate/carbon paste electrode sensor presented a good capability to investigate the favipiravir and acetaminophen levels in real samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract
In general, an individual who experiences the symptoms of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2 infection is declared as recovered after 2 weeks. However, approximately 10-20% of these survivors have been reported to encounter long-term health problems, defined as 'long COVID-19', e.g., blood coagulation which leads to stroke with an estimated incidence of 3%, and pulmonary embolism with 5% incidence. At the time of infection, the immune response produces pro-inflammatory cytokines that stimulate stromal cells to produce pro-hepatocyte growth factor (pro-HGF) and eventually is activated into hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), which helps the coagulation process in endothelial and epithelial cells. HGF is a marker that appears as an inflammatory response that leads to coagulation. Currently, there is no information on the effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on serum HGF concentrations as a marker of the prognosis of coagulation in long COVID-19 survivors. This review discusses the pathophysiology between COVID-19 and HGF, IL-6, and D-dimer.
