Relationships between blood chromium exposure and liver injury: Exploring the mediating role of systemic inflammation in a chromate-exposed population

Hexavalent chromium and its compounds are prevalent pollutants, especially in the work environment, pose a significant risk for multisystem toxicity and cancers. While it is known that chromium accumulation in the liver can cause damage, the dose-response relationship between blood chromium (Cr) and liver injury, as well as the possible potential toxic mechanisms involved, remains poorly understood. To address this, we conducted a follow-up study of 590 visits from 305 participants to investigate the associations of blood Cr with biomarkers for liver injury, including serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TBIL), and direct bilirubin (DBIL), and to evaluate the mediating effects of systemic inflammation. Platelet (PLT) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were utilized as biomarkers of systemic inflammation. In the linear mixed-effects analyses, each 1-unit increase in blood Cr level was associated with estimated effect percentage increases of 0.82% (0.11%, 1.53%) in TBIL, 1.67% (0.06%, 3.28%) in DBIL, 0.73% (0.04%, 1.43%) in ALT and 2.08% (0.29%, 3.87%) in AST, respectively. Furthermore, PLT mediated 10.04%, 11.35%, and 10.77% increases in TBIL, DBIL, and ALT levels induced by chromate, respectively. In addition, PLR mediated 8.26% and 15.58% of the association between blood Cr and TBIL or ALT. These findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying blood Cr-induced liver injury, which is partly due to worsening systemic inflammation.

Impact of high (1950 MHz) and extremely low (50 Hz) frequency electromagnetic fields on DNA damage caused by occupationally relevant exposures in human derived cell lines

Epidemiological studies indicate that electromagnetic fields are associated with cancer in humans. Exposure to mobile phone specific high frequency fields (HF-EMF) may lead to increased glioma risks, while low frequency radiation (LF-EMF) is associated with childhood leukemia. We studied the impact of HF-EMF (1950 MHz, UMTS signal) on DNA stability in an astrocytoma cell line (1321N1), and the effect of LF-EMF (50 Hz) in human derived lymphoma (Jurkat) cells. To find out if these fields affect chemically induced DNA damage, co-exposure experiments were performed. The cells were exposed to HF-EMF or LF-EMF and treated simultaneously and sequentially with mutagens. The compounds cause DNA damage via different molecular mechanisms, i.e. pyrimidine dimers which are characteristic for UV light (4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide, 4NQO), bulky base adducts (benzo[a]pyrene diolepoxide, BPDE), DNA-DNA and DNA-protein cross links and oxidative damage (NiCl2, CrO3). DNA damage was measured in single cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assays. We found a moderate reduction of basal and 4NQO-induced DNA damage in the astrocytoma line, but no significant alterations of chemically induced DNA migration by the HF and LF fields under all other experimental series. The biological consequences of the moderate reduction remain unclear, but our findings indicate that acute mobile phone and power line specific EMF exposures do not enhance genotoxic effects caused by occupationally relevant chemical exposures.

Characterization of airborne endotoxin in personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and bioreactivity for elderly residents in Hong Kong

The heavy metals and bioreactivity properties of endotoxin in personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were characterized in the analysis. The average personal exposure concentrations to PM2.5 were ranged from 6.8 to 96.6 μg/m3. The mean personal PM2.5 concentrations in spring, summer, autumn, and winter were 32.1±15.8, 22.4±11.8, 35.3±11.9, and 50.2±19.9 μg/m3, respectively. There were 85 % of study targets exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) PM2.5 threshold (24 hours). The mean endotoxin concentrations ranged from 1.086 ± 0.384-1.912 ± 0.419 EU/m3, with a geometric mean (GM) varied from 1.034 to 1.869. The concentration of iron (Fe) (0.008-1.16 μg/m3) was one of the most abundant transition metals in the samples that could affect endotoxin toxicity under Toll-Like Receptor 4 (TLR4) stimulation. In summer, the interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels showed statistically significant differences compared to other seasons. Spearman correlation analysis showed endotoxin concentrations were positively correlated with chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), implying possible roles as nutrients and further transport via adhering to the surface of fine inorganic particles. Mixed-effects model analysis demonstrated that Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) production was positively associated with endotoxin concentration and Cr as a combined exposure factor. The Cr contained the highest combined effect (0.205-0.262), suggesting that Cr can potentially exacerbate the effect of endotoxin on inflammation and oxidative stress. The findings will be useful for practical policies for mitigating air pollution to protect the public health of the citizens.

Use of micronucleus cytome assays with buccal cells for the detection of genotoxic effects: a systematic review and meta-analysis of occupational exposures to metals

Micronucleus (MN) assays with buccal cells are at present widely used to investigate occupational exposures to genotoxic carcinogens. This article describes their use for the monitoring of metal exposed workers. We found in total 73 relevant articles, in the majority (97%) increased MN and/or other nuclear anomalies were reported. Most studies were realized in South East Asia and South America. A variety of different occupations was studied including welders, electroplaters, painters, workers in battery recycling and production, tannery workers, dental technicians, miners, workers in foundries and smelters, and also subjects working in waste recycling, glass, aluminum and steel production. In many investigations the effects increased with the duration of the working period. The quality of individual studies was evaluated with a quality score tool. The number of cells was in most studies sufficient and DNA-specific stains were used. However, many studies have shortcomings, e.g. they focused solely on MN formation and did not evaluate anomalies, which provide additional information about the stability of the genetic material and acute cytotoxic effects. Only 35% of the investigations contain quantitative information about exposures to metals and other toxicants. In 6 of these studies, correlations were observed between the concentrations of specific metals (As, Pb, Cr, Cd) in body fluids and MN frequencies. Taken together, the available data indicate that the MN assay can be used to detect chromosomal damage in metal exposed groups; furthermore, it enables also comparisons between subgroups differing in regard to their exposure and allows an estimation of the efficiency of protective measures. The exposure of workers to metals is currently controlled with chemical analytical measurements only, MN assays with buccal cells could contribute to further improve the safety at workplaces as they reflect the biological consequences including synergistic and antagonistic interactions between toxicants.

Circulating lung-cancer-related non-coding RNAs are associated with occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium - A cross-sectional study within the SafeChrom project

BACKGROUND

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(Ⅵ)) is classified as a group 1 human carcinogen and increases the risk of lung cancer. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have key regulatory roles in lung cancer, but less is known about their relation to Cr(Ⅵ) exposure.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to 1) measure the expression of lung cancer-related circulating ncRNAs in exposed workers and controls; 2) assess associations between ncRNAs expression and Cr concentrations in red blood cells (RBC) and urine; and 3) evaluate correlations between the ncRNAs.

METHODS

The study included 111 Cr(VI) exposed workers and 72 controls recruited from the SafeChrom project. Cr concentrations were measured in RBC (biomarker of long-term exposure) and urine (biomarker of short-term exposure) samples. Long ncRNA (lncRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) were extracted from plasma followed by deoxyribonuclease treatment, complementary DNA synthesis, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction using target-specific assays for three lncRNAs (H19, MALAT1, NORAD), and four miRNAs (miR-142-3p, miR-15b-5p, miR-3940-5p, miR-451a).

RESULTS

Expression levels of lncRNAs MALAT1 and NORAD, and all four miRNAs, were significantly lower in Cr(VI) exposed workers compared with controls, and correlated significantly with RBC-Cr concentrations (rS = -0.16 to -0.38). H19 was non-significantly increased in exposed workers but significantly correlated with miR-142-3p (rS = -0.33) and miR-15b-5p (rS = -0.30), and NORAD was significantly positively correlated with all four miRNAs (rS = 0.17 to 0.46). In multivariate regression models adjusting for confounders, expressions of lncRNAs MALAT1 and NORAD and all miRNAs were still significantly lower in the exposed group compared with controls, and the expression decreased with increasing RBC-Cr concentrations.

CONCLUSIONS

Cr(VI) exposure was inversely and in a dose-response manner associated with the expression of circulating non-coding RNA, which suggests ncRNAs as potential biomarkers for Cr(VI)-induced toxicity. Correlations between miRNAs and lncRNAs suggest that they participate in the same lncRNA-miRNA-messenger RNA regulatory axes, which may play important roles in Cr(VI) carcinogenesis.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in leafy vegetables: implications for public health and regulatory measures

Heavy metal contamination in leafy vegetables poses significant health risks, highlighting the urgent need for stringent monitoring and intervention measures to ensure food safety and mitigate potential adverse effects on public health. This study investigates the levels of heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu), in locally grown and commercially available leafy vegetables, comparing them to the safety limits established by WHO/FAO. The results revealed that levels of Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb in the vegetables exceeded WHO/FAO limits, while Zn and Cu remained within permissible bounds. Marketed vegetables exhibited higher metal concentrations than those from nearby farms. For Cu (0.114-0.289 mg/kg) and Zn (0.005-0.574 mg/kg), the daily intake of metals (DIM) was below the dietary intake (DI) and upper limit (UL). Cd's DIM (0.031-0.062 mg/kg) remained below the UL but exceeded the DI. Marketed kale and mint surpassed both DI and UL limits for Ni, while local produce only exceeded the DI. All vegetables had DIM below the DI, except for mint and kale. For Pb, every vegetable exceeded DI limits, with market samples contributing significantly. Cr's DIM ranged from 0.028 to 1.335 mg/kg, for which no set maximum daily intake exists. The health risk index (HRI) values for Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Pb suggested potential health risks associated with leafy greens, while Cr's HRI was below 1. The study underscores the need for stringent monitoring and intervention measures to mitigate the health risks posed by heavy metal contamination in leafy vegetables. These findings suggest that consuming these leafy greens may put consumers at considerable risk for health problems related to Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn exposure.

Metals on the Menu-Analyzing the Presence, Importance, and Consequences

Metals are integral components of the natural environment, and their presence in the food supply is inevitable and complex. While essential metals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, and copper are crucial for various physiological functions and must be consumed through the diet, others, like lead, mercury, and cadmium, are toxic even at low concentrations and pose serious health risks. This study comprehensively analyzes the presence, importance, and consequences of metals in the food chain. We explore the pathways through which metals enter the food supply, their distribution across different food types, and the associated health implications. By examining current regulatory standards for maximum allowable levels of various metals, we highlight the importance of ensuring food safety and protecting public health. Furthermore, this research underscores the need for continuous monitoring and management of metal content in food, especially as global agricultural and food production practices evolve. Our findings aim to inform dietary recommendations, food fortification strategies, and regulatory policies, ultimately contributing to safer and more nutritionally balanced diets.

Prosthetic Metals: Release, Metabolism and Toxicity

The development of metallic joint prostheses has been ongoing for more than a century alongside advancements in hip and knee arthroplasty. Among the materials utilized, the Cobalt-Chromium-Molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) and Titanium-Aluminum-Vanadium (Ti-Al-V) alloys are predominant in joint prosthesis construction, predominantly due to their commendable biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance. Nonetheless, over time, the physical wear, electrochemical corrosion, and inflammation induced by these alloys that occur post-implantation can cause the release of various metallic components. The released metals can then flow and metabolize in vivo, subsequently causing potential local or systemic harm. This review first details joint prosthesis development and acknowledges the release of prosthetic metals. Second, we outline the metallic concentration, biodistribution, and elimination pathways of the released prosthetic metals. Lastly, we discuss the possible organ, cellular, critical biomolecules, and significant signaling pathway toxicities and adverse effects that arise from exposure to these metals.

Selective Isolation and Identification of Microorganisms with Dual Capabilities: Leather Biodegradation and Heavy Metal Resistance for Industrial Applications

Tanning, crucial for leather production, relies heavily on chromium yet poses risks due to chromium's oxidative conversion, leading to significant wastewater and solid waste generation. Physico-chemical methods are typically used for heavy metal removal, but they have drawbacks, prompting interest in eco-friendly biological remediation techniques like biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation. The EU Directive (2018/850) mandates alternatives to landfilling or incineration for industrial textile waste management, highlighting the importance of environmentally conscious practices for leather products' end-of-life management, with composting being the most researched and viable option. This study aimed to isolate microorganisms from tannery wastewater and identify those responsible for different types of tanned leather biodegradation. Bacterial shifts during leather biodegradation were observed using a leather biodegradation assay (ISO 20136) with tannery and municipal wastewater as the inoculum. Over 10,000 bacterial species were identified in all analysed samples, with 7 bacterial strains isolated from tannery wastewaters. Identification of bacterial genera like Acinetobacter, Brevundimonas, and Mycolicibacterium provides insights into potential microbial candidates for enhancing leather biodegradability, wastewater treatment, and heavy metal bioremediation in industrial applications.

Insights into the effects of chronic combined chromium-nickel exposure on colon damage in mice through transcriptomic analysis and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion assay

Heavy metals interact with each other in a coexisting manner to produce complex combined toxicity to organisms. At present, the toxic effects of chronic co-exposure to heavy metals hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and divalent nickel [Ni(II)] on organisms are seldom studied and the related mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we explored the mechanism of the colon injury in mice caused by chronic exposure to Cr or/and Ni. The results showed that, compared with the control group, Cr or/and Ni chronic exposure affected the body weight of mice, and led to infiltration of inflammatory cells in the colon, decreased the number of goblet cells, fusion of intracellular mucus particles and damaged cell structure of intestinal epithelial. In the Cr or/and Ni exposure group, the activity of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) increased, the expression levels of MUC2 were significantly down-regulated, and those of ZO-1 and Occludin were significantly up-regulated. Interestingly, factorial analysis revealed an interaction between Cr and Ni, which was manifested as antagonistic effects on iNOS activity, ZO-1 and MUC2 mRNA expression levels. Transcriptome sequencing further revealed that the expression of genes-related to inflammation, intestinal mucus and tight junctions changed obviously. Moreover, the relative contents of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) in the Cr, Ni and Cr+Ni groups all changed with in-vitro gastrointestinal （IVG）digestion, especially in the Cr+Ni group. Our results indicated that the chronic exposure to Cr or/and Ni can lead to damage to the mice colon, and the relative content changes of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) might be the main reason for the antagonistic effect of Cr+Ni exposure on the colon damage.

The comprehensive strategy in the human health risk assessment of total chromium impurities in cough syrups with Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) available in Polish pharmacies: regulatory aspects and special emphasis on Cr(VI) mode of action

Chromium, which can currently only be considered pharmacologically active and not an essential element, is a very intriguing elemental impurity in final pharmaceutical products, especially traditional herbal medicinal products. This kind of traditional herbal medicinal product with Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis L., radix) registered in the EU is widely used among the European population. The aim of this article is to propose a double regulatory strategy in assessing the human health risk of total chromium impurities in cough syrups with Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) available in Polish pharmacies. We applied the strategy based on the requirements of the ICH Q3D (R1) guideline for the assessment of Cr impurities in final traditional herbal medicinal products with Marshmallow Root registered in the EU. Furthermore, we applied the strategy based on the concept of margin of exposure (MoE) considering Cr(VI) genotoxicity mode of action (MOA) and based on BMD10 for Cr(VI) as a point of departure (PoD). The total Cr content was in the range: 1.12-9.61 µg/L (in comparison with the ICH Q3D R1 guidelines: 1100 µg/g). Total Cr levels in a single dose were relatively high compared to raw results, but were not a threat to patients. Comparison of estimated results with oral PDE value for Cr in final drugs suggested by the ICH Q3D R1 guideline (10,700 µg/day) show that all the products analyzed were below this value (the highest result was 278.40 ng/day). Despite conservative assumptions, the MoE values obtained for Cr in daily dose for each Marshmallow Root cough syrup were above 10,000; therefore, exposure to Cr would not cause a health risk for specific population groups (children and adults). It can be summarized that each of the phytopharmaceuticals analysed with Marshmallow root available in Polish pharmacies does not represent a health hazard to patients. We confirm the safety of Cr impurities by applying a double regulatory strategy without the application of an expansive and demanding HPLC-ICP-MS technique for Cr speciation.

Metal toxin threat in wildland fires determined by geology and fire severity

Accentuated by climate change, catastrophic wildfires are a growing, distributed global public health risk from inhalation of smoke and dust. Underrecognized, however, are the health threats arising from fire-altered toxic metals natural to soils and plants. Here, we demonstrate that high temperatures during California wildfires catalyzed widespread transformation of chromium to its carcinogenic form in soil and ash, as hexavalent chromium, particularly in areas with metal-rich geologies (e.g., serpentinite). In wildfire ash, we observed dangerous levels (327-13,100 µg kg-1) of reactive hexavalent chromium in wind-dispersible particulates. Relatively dry post-fire weather contributed to the persistence of elevated hexavalent chromium in surficial soil layers for up to ten months post-fire. The geographic distribution of metal-rich soils and fire incidents illustrate the broad global threat of wildfire smoke- and dust-born metals to populations. Our findings provide new insights into why wildfire smoke exposure appears to be more hazardous to humans than pollution from other sources.

Hexavalent chromium caused DNA damage repair and apoptosis via the PI3K/AKT/FOXO1 pathway triggered by oxidative stress in the lung of rat

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is an occupational carcinogen that accumulates in the lungs and causes lung injury and even lung cancer. 36 SD male rats received inhalable intratracheal instillation of Cr(VI) (0.05, 0.25 mg Cr/kg) or the same volume (3 ml/kg) of normal saline weekly for 28 days (total 5 times). After 28 days of exposure, half of the rats in each group were sacrificed for investigation, and the rest stopped exposure and began to be self-repaired for two weeks. Histopathology analyses revealed that Cr(VI) induced slight dilatation and hemorrhage of perialveolar capillaries, pulmonary bronchodilation, and congestion with peripheral flaky-like necrosis accompanied by inflammatory cell infiltration, especially the 0.25 mg Cr/kg group. Cr(VI) exposure caused the increase of blood Cr, urinary Cr, MDA, urinary 8-hydroxy-2' -deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and the decrease of GSH and MDA, while two-week repair only reduced urinary Cr. Exposure to Cr(VI) significantly upregulated FOXO1 and downregulated p-AKT and p-FOXO1 for two weeks. PI3K in the 0.25 mg Cr/kg group was inhibited after two weeks of repair. Cr(VI) exposure mainly promoted GADD45a and CHK2 in the exposure group, promoted Bim, Bax/Bcl-2, and suppressed Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL in the repair group. These results demonstrate that Cr(VI) may induce DNA damage repair and apoptosis in the lung by activating the PI3K/AKT/FOXO1 pathway. Two-week repair may alleviate oxidative stress and DNA damage induced by Cr(VI) exposure but couldn't eliminate its effects. This study provides a new perspective for exploring the Cr(VI) induced lung cancer mechanism.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi alter rhizosphere fungal community characteristics of Acorus calamus to improve Cr resistance

To investigate changes in fungal community characteristics under different Cr(VI) concentration stresses and the advantages of adding arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), we used high throughput sequencing to characterize the fungal communities. Cr(VI) stress reduced rhizosphere soil SOM (soil organic matter) content and AMF addition improved this stress phenomenon. There were significant differences in fungal community changes under different Cr(VI) concentrations. The fungal community characteristics changed through inhibition of fungal metabolic ability, as fungal abundance increased after AMF addition, and the fungal diversity increased under high Cr(VI) concentration. The dominant phyla were members of the Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Rozellomycota. Dominant groups relevant to Cr resistance were Ascomycota and Basidiomycota fungi. Moreover, Fungal community characteristics were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing of the cytochrome c metabolic pathway, NADH dehydrogenase, and NADH: ubiquinone reductase and all these functions were enhanced after AMF addition. Therefore, Cr(VI) stress significantly affects fungal community structure, while AMF addition could increase its SOM content, and metabolic capacity, and improve fungal community tolerance to Cr stress. This study contributed to the understanding response of rhizosphere fungal community in AMF-assisted wetland phytoremediation under Cr stress.

Selenium nanoparticles: Enhanced nutrition and beyond

Selenium is a trace nutrient that has both nutritional and nutraceutical functions, whereas narrow nutritional range of selenium intake limits its use. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are less toxic and more bioavailable than traditional forms of selenium, suggesting that SeNPs have the potential to replace traditional selenium in food industries and/or biomedical fields. From the perspective of how SeNPs can be applied in health area, this review comprehensively discusses SeNPs in terms of its preparation, nutritional aspect, detoxification effect of heavy metals, nutraceutical functions and anti-pathogenic microorganism effects. By physical, chemical, or biological methods, inorganic selenium can be transformed into SeNPs which have increased stability and bioavailability as well as low toxicity. SeNPs are more effective than traditional selenium form in synthesizing selenoproteins like glutathione peroxidases. SeNPs can reshape the digestive system to facilitate digestion and absorption of nutrients. SeNPs have shown excellent potential to adjunctively treat cancer patients, enhance immune system, control diabetes, and prevent rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally, SeNPs have good microbial anti-pathogenic effects and can be used with other antimicrobial agents to fight against pathogenic bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Development of novel SeNPs with enhanced functions can greatly benefit the food-, nutraceutical-, and biomedical industries.

Removal of Cr6+ ions and mordant violet 40 dye from liquid media using Pterocladia capillacea red algae derived activated carbon-iron oxides

In recent years, water pollution has become one of the most dangerous problems facing the world. Pollution of water with heavy metals and different dyes has caused many harmful effects on human health, living organisms and our environment. In this study, iron oxide nanomagnetic composite from Pterocladia Capillacea red algae-derived activated carbon (PCAC-IO) was synthesized by co-precipitation method using different iron salts and different base solutions. The synthesized nanocomposite was investigated with various characterization techniques such as FTIR, BET, SEM-EDX, TEM, XRD, and VSM. The obtained PCAC-IO adsorbent was used for Cr6+ ions and Mordant Violet 40 (MV40) dye removal. The adsorption mechanism of Cr6+ ions and MV40 dye on PCAC-IO was examined using several adsorption and kinetic isotherm models. Langmuir and Freundlich models were investigated using experimental data. Pseudo-first-order (PFO), Pseudo-second-order (PSO) and intraparticle diffusion models (IPDM) were applied to identify the adsorption mechanism. It has shown that the PSO kinetic model fits better with the experimental data obtained from PCAC-IO. This result can be interpreted as the adsorption of the adsorbate on the nanocomposite as chemical adsorption. The optimum conditions for maximum Cr6+ ions removal (96.88%) with PCAC-IO adsorbent occur at room temperature, 5 g L-1 adsorbent concentration, 100 mg L-1 initial pollutant concentration, pH 1 and at the end of 180 min, while maximum MV40 dye removal (99.76%), other conditions being the same, unlikely it occurred at pH 2.06 and after 45 min. The most suitable model for Cr6+ ions removal under the conditions of 1 L-1 g adsorbent concentration and 400 mg L-1 adsorbate concentration was Langmuir (Qmax = 151.52 mg g-1), while for MV40 removal it was Freundlich (Qmax = 303.03 mg g-1). We propose the use of activated carbon-supported iron oxide prepared from bio-waste material, especially from Pterocladia Capillacea red algae, as a promising adsorbent with high efficiency in the removal of Cr6+ ions and MV40 dye from aqueous media.

A regional approach for health risk assessment of toxicants in plastic food containers

Plastic food containers are being used popularly, generating a waste of about 115 million tons in Vietnam. Such waste is causing environmental and health issues. This study conducted a field survey with 250 local people and selected 59 samples out of 135 plastic food containers collected in Go Vap district, Vietnam. Collected plastic samples identified compositions were PET 13.6%, PP 28.8%, PS 16.9%, and 40.7% undefined plastics. Collected plastic samples were classified based on the plastic type using recycling code and quantitatively analyzed with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy method to assess concentrations of Cd, Sb, Pb, Hg, Sn, Cr, Br, Cl, and S. Most of these collected plastic samples (91.5%) were found to contain 8/9 hazardous substances and most elements contained in these plastics were below their standard thresholds. These elements in plastic samples could be divided as the result into three hazard groups: (1) high hazard group (Sb, Cl, and S); (2) medium hazard group (Cr, Br and Hg); and (3) low hazard groups (Cd, Pb and Sn). Among substances in the high hazard group, element Sb was assessed for its migration because only Sb is regulated in Vietnam in QCVN 12-1: 2011/BYT. Substances of Cl, S, Cr, Br, and Hg (group 1, 2) do not have regulations related to the method of decontamination. Thus, additional health risks need to be assessed using the USEtox model. Finally, this study proposed a screening process to assess the risk of toxicity of elements contained in plastic food containers through ISO 31000:2018.

A review on chromium health hazards and molecular mechanism of chromium bioremediation

Living beings have been devastated by environmental pollution, which has reached its peak. The disastrous pollution of the environment is in large part due to industrial wastes containing toxic pollutants. The widespread use of chromium (Cr (III)/Cr (VI)) in industries, especially tanneries, makes it one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants. Chromium pollution is widespread due to ineffective treatment methods. Bioremediation of chromium (Cr) using bacteria is very thoughtful due to its eco-friendly and cost-effective outcome. In order to counter chromium toxicity, bacteria have numerous mechanisms, such as the ability to absorb, reduce, efflux, or accumulate the metal. In this review article, we focused on chromium toxicity on human and environmental health as well as its bioremediation mechanism.

Heavy metals and metalloid in aquatic invertebrates: A review of single/mixed forms, combination with other pollutants, and environmental factors

Heavy metals (HMs) and metalloid occur naturally and are found throughout the Earth's crust but they are discharged into aquatic environments at high concentrations by human activities, increasing heavy metal pollution. HMs can bioaccumulate in higher organisms through the food web and consequently affect humans. In an aquatic environment, various HMs mixtures can be present. Furthermore, HMs adsorb on other environmental pollutants, such as microplastics and persistent organic pollutants, causing a synergistic or antagonistic effect on aquatic organisms. Therefore, to understand the biological and physiological effects of HMs on aquatic organisms, it is important to evaluate the effects of exposure to combinations of complex HM mixtures and/or pollutants and other environmental factors. Aquatic invertebrates occupy an important niche in the aquatic food chain as the main energy link between higher and lower organisms. The distribution of heavy metals and the resulting toxic effects in aquatic invertebrates have been extensively studied, but few reports have dealt with the relationship between HMs, pollutants, and environmental factors in biological systems with regard to biological availability and toxicity. This review describes the overall properties of individual HM and their effects on aquatic invertebrates and comprehensively reviews physiological and biochemical endpoints in aquatic invertebrates depending on interactions among HMs, other pollutants, and environmental factors.

Biogeochemical behaviour and toxicology of chromium in the soil-water-human nexus: A review

Chromium (Cr) affects human health if it accumulates in organs to elevated concentrations. The toxicity risk of Cr in the ecosphere depends upon the dominant Cr species and their bioavailability in the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. However, the soil-water-human nexus that controls the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its potential toxicity is not fully understood. This paper synthesizes information on different dimensions of Cr ecotoxicological hazards in the soil and water and their subsequent effects on human health. The various routes of environmental exposure of Cr to humans and other organisms are also discussed. Human exposure to Cr(VI) causes both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects via complicated reactions that include oxidative stress, chromosomal and DNA damage, and mutagenesis. Chromium (VI) inhalation can cause lung cancer; however, incidences of other types of cancer following Cr(VI) exposure are low but probable. The non-carcinogenic health consequences of Cr(VI) exposure are primarily respiratory and cutaneous. Research on the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its toxicological hazards on human and other biological routes is therefore urgently needed to develop a holistic approach to understanding the soil-water-human nexus that controls the toxicological hazards of Cr and its detoxification.

Exploration of Whole Blood Chromium as Biomarker of Hexavalent Chromium Exposure: Based on Literature Review and Monte Carlo Simulation

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a sort of common industrial poison and environmental pollutant posing great health threat to the population. Appropriate biomarkers are indispensable indicative tools in the biological monitoring and health risk assessment of Cr(VI). In this study, we explored the rationality and feasibility of whole blood Cr serving as the biomarker of internal exposure with corroboration drawn from literature review and Monte Carlo simulation. It was indicated that the whole blood Cr had practical operability in the large-scale population researches and robust biological significance with broad association with various Cr(VI)-related effect indices. The simulated distribution of whole blood Cr concentration in exposed populations was about three times higher than that of the control (13.52 ± 24.99 vs. 4.25 ± 11.37 μg/L, P < 0.05; 6.73 ± 10.92 μg/L vs. 1.96 ± 2.05 μg/L in China, P < 0.05), which suggested a great discriminatory ability that might be supported as evidence for its reasonable application.

Serum cobalt and chromium concentration following total hip arthroplasty: a Bayesian network meta-analysis

The present systematic review investigated the concentration of chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co) in serum in patients who have undergone total hip arthroplasty (THA). The first outcome of interest was to investigate the mean concentration in serum of Cr and Co using different material combinations and to verify whether their concentrations change significantly using different patterns of head and liner in THA. The second outcome of interest was to investigate whether the time elapsed from the index surgery to the follow-up, BMI, sex, and side exert an influence on the mean concentration of Cr and Co in serum in patients who have undergone THA. The following material combinations were investigated (head-liner): Ceramic-Co Cr (CoCr), CoCr-CoCr, CoCr-Polyethylene, CoCr high carbide-CoCr high carbide. Data from 2756 procedures were retrieved. The mean length of follow-up was 69.3 ± 47.7 months. The ANOVA test evidenced good comparability in age, length of follow-up, BMI, and sex (P > 0.1). In patients who have undergone THA, the mean concentration in the serum of Co ranged between 0.5 µg/L and 3.5 µg/L, and the mean concentration of Cr from 0.6 to 2.6 µg/L. The difference in the concentration of Co and Cr in serum is strictly related to the implant configuration, with the coupling CoCr-CoCr showing the highest and CoCr-Polyethylene showing the lowest concentration. Patient characteristics, BMI, sex, side and the time elapsed from the index surgery to the last follow-up did not exert a significant influence on the concentration of Co and Cr in serum in patients who have undergone total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Chromium (III) and chromium (VI) removal and organic matter interaction with nanofiltration

Chromium (Cr) is a toxic inorganic contaminant for drinking water, in which the concentration has to be controlled for human health and safety. Cr retention was investigated with stirred cell experiments using sulphonated polyethersulfone nanofiltration (NF) membranes of different molecular weight cut-off (MWCO). Cr(III) and Cr(VI) retention follow the order of the MWCO of the studied NF membranes; HY70-720 Da > HY50-1000 Da > HY10-3000 Da with a pH dependency, especially for Cr(III). The importance of the charge exclusion was highlighted when Cr(OH)₄^- (for Cr(III)) and CrO₄^2- (for Cr(VI)) was the predominant species in the feed solution. In presence of organic matter, namely humic acid (HA), Cr(III) retention increased by 60 %, while no influence of HA was observed for Cr(VI). HA did not induce major modifications on the membrane surface charge for these membranes. Solute-solute interaction, in particular Cr(III)-HA complexation, was the responsible mechanism for the increase in Cr(III) retention. This was confirmed by asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation, coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (FFFF-ICP-MS) analysis. Cr(III)-HA complexation was significant at HA concentrations as low as 1 mgC/L. The chosen NF membranes were able to achieve the EU guideline (25 μg/L) for Cr in drinking water for a feed concentration of 250 μg/L.

Mitigating the nephrotoxic impact of hexavalent chromium in Ctenopharyngodon idellus (grass carp) with Boerhavia diffusa (punarnava) leaf extract

In Ctenopharyngodon idellus, the ameliorative influence of rutin-containing leaf extract of Boerhavia diffusa was assessed against chronic exposure to hexavalent chromium. For this, alterations in chromium accumulation, oxidative stress, kidney function markers, histopathology (light and transmission electron microscopy), and transcriptional profiling (Nrf2 and MT2) were examined. RP-HPLC analysis confirmed the presence of rutin (90.45 ± 0.98 mg/g) in the ethanolic leaf extract of the plant. LD₅₀ of the extract to the fish was beyond 5000 mg/kg b.w. The fish was subjected to a sublethal concentration of hexavalent chromium (5.30 mg/L) accompanied by a dose of 250 mg/kg b.w./day of extract in the diet for the experimental duration of 45 days. The extract alone did not generate any adverse consequences in the nephric tissue. Chronic exposure to hexavalent chromium damaged tissue irreparably, demonstrated by elevated levels of kidney function markers (blood urea nitrogen and creatinine) and altered histoarchitecture (DTC value of 78.02 ± 10.5). The metal exposure increased chromium accumulation and malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreased the reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione-S-transferase) and gene expression in the tissue. The co-supplementation of leaf extract with metal exposure revealed a tissue architecture with normal to slight modifications, and the level of kidney markers, antioxidants, and genes expressed in a normalized range. Principal component analysis created two components with antioxidants (GSH, SOD, CAT, and GST) revealing a negative correlation with the second component comprising MDA, DTC, and chromium concentration. It can be concluded that B. diffusa leaves are safe additives in the fish diet and possess an ameliorative capacity for renal injury incurred by hexavalent chromium.

Regulation of chromium translocation to shoot and physiological, metabolomic, and ionomic adjustments confer chromium stress tolerance in the halophyte Suaeda maritima

Chromium (Cr) is a highly toxic element adversely affecting the environment, cultivable lands, and human populations. The present study investigated the effects of Cr (VI) (100-400 μM) on plant morphology and growth, photosynthetic pigments, organic osmolytes, ionomics, and metabolomic dynamics of the halophyte Suaeda maritima to decipher the Cr tolerance mechanisms. Cr exposure reduced the growth and biomass in S. maritima. The photosynthetic pigments content significantly declined at higher Cr concentrations (400 μM). However, at lower Cr concentrations (100-300 μM), the photosynthetic pigments remained unaffected or increased. The results suggest that a high concentration of Cr exposure might have adverse effects on PS II in S. maritima. The enhanced uptake of Na⁺ in S. maritima imposed to Cr stress indicates that Na⁺ might have a pivotal role in osmotic adjustment, thereby maintaining water status under Cr stress. The proline content was significantly upregulated in Cr-treated plants suggesting its role in maintaining osmotic balance and scavenging ROS. The metabolomic analysis of control and 400 μM Cr treated plants led to the identification of 62 metabolites. The fold chain analysis indicated the upregulation of several metabolites, including phytohormones (SA and GA₃), polyphenols (cinnamic acid, sinapic acid, coumaric acid, vanillic acid, and syringic acid), and amino acids (alanine, leucine, proline, methionine, and cysteine) under Cr stress. The upregulation of these metabolites suggests the enhanced metal chelation and sequestration in vacuoles, reducing oxidative stress by scavenging ROS and promoting photosynthesis by maintaining the chloroplast membrane structure and photosynthetic pigments. Furthermore, in S. maritima, Cr tolerance index (T_i) was more than 60% in all the treatments, and Cr bio-concentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (T_f) values were all greater than 1.0, which clearly indicates the Cr-hyperaccumulator characteristics of this halophyte.

Detailed insight into chromium species released from failed CoCrMo implants: Ex vivo periprosthetic tissues study

This unique study provides information on Cr species and their distribution in periprosthetic tissues of patients with metal-on-polyethylene joint implants. Co-Cr-Mo alloy has been widely used in joint replacement and represents a source of metal derived species. In the case of chromium, previous studies on periprosthetic tissues revealed mainly Cr(III) distribution, whereas the potential release of carcinogenic Cr(VI) species has been still a subject of debate. Here, an analytical approach utilizing speciation and fractionation was developed to analyze periprosthetic tissue samples collected from wide range of patients with failed total hip or knee replacements. The results reveal that Cr(III) is mainly released in the form of insoluble CrPO₄ and Cr₂ O₃ particles. The highest Cr contents were found in periprosthetic tissues of patients suffering from aseptic loosening and having more Cr-based implants in the body. Cr species penetrated tissue layers, but their levels decreased with the distance from an implant. The detailed speciation/fractionation study carried out using the set of consecutive periprosthetic tissues of a patient with extensive metallosis showed the presence of trace amounts of free Cr(III), nanoparticles, and metal-protein complexes, but the majority of Cr still occurred in CrPO₄ form. Carcinogenic Cr(VI) species were not detected. Up to date, there is no published human tissue study focused on the detailed speciation of both soluble and insoluble Cr-based species in the context of failing total hip and knee replacements.

Hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite as a reusable sorbent for removal of Nile blue dye and Cr(VI) from polluted water

In this study, hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite was used as a novel adsorbent to eliminate Nile blue (NB) dye and hexavalent chromium ion (Cr(VI)) from aqueous media. Different analyses such as FTIR, Map, SEM, EDX, BET, and XRD were used to study the characteristics of the composite. The highest sorption efficiencies of Cr(VI) and NB at pH 2 and 10 were 97.63% and 98.83%, respectively, which are significant values. Equilibrium and kinetic studies of the sorption process showed that the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model can better describe the equilibrium and kinetic behavior of the sorption process. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum sorption capacities of NB dye and Cr(VI) ion using the hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite were 0.259 and 0.938 mmol/g, respectively. Also, the results of the thermodynamic study showed that the sorption process is favorable (ΔS° =  - 34.2 kJ/mol·K for Cr(VI) and - 144.6 kJ/mol·K for NB), spontaneous (ΔG° < 0), and exothermic (ΔH° =  - 27.99 kJ/mol for Cr(VI) and - 64.2 kJ/mol for NB). Moreover, the desorption process of both contaminants using the hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite showed that the H₂SO₄ solution with a concentration of 3 mol/L can remove both contaminants separately with the highest efficiency. Furthermore, the reusability study indicated that the composite can be used in five reuse cycles without significant decrease in its efficiency. Besides, the composite was able to eliminate color, turbidity, COD, and BOD₅ from the textile wastewater with removal efficiencies of 93.06, 81.61, 76.05, and 71.88%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite was synthesized and used for the first time to remove Cr(VI) ions and NB dye. In general, the aforementioned composite is recommended for industrial wastewater treatment.

The Emerging Role of Salivary Oxidative Stress Biomarkers as Prognostic Markers of Periodontitis: New Insights for a Personalized Approach in Dentistry

Periodontitis is a multifactorial and infective oral disease that leads to the destruction of periodontal tissues and tooth loss. Although the treatment of periodontitis has improved recently, the effective treatment of periodontitis and the periodontitis-affected periodontal tissues is still a challenge. Therefore, exploring new therapeutic strategies for a personalized approach is urgent. For this reason, the aim of this study is to summarize recent advances and the potential of oxidative stress biomarkers in the early diagnosis and personalized therapeutic approaches in periodontitis. Recently, ROS metabolisms (ROMs) have been studied in the physiopathology of periodontitis. Different studies show that ROS plays a crucial role in periodontitis. In this regard, the reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) started to be searched for the measures of the oxidizing capacity of the plasma understood as the total content of oxygen free radicals (ROS). The oxidizing capacity of plasma is a significant indicator of the body's oxidant state as well as homocysteine (Hcy), sulfur amino acid, which has pro-oxidant effects as it favors the production of superoxide anion. More specifically, the thioredoxin (TRX) and peroxiredoxin (PRX) systems control reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide and hydroxyl species, to transduce redox signals and change the activities of antioxidant enzymes to remove free radicals. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), among other antioxidant enzymes, change their activity when ROS are produced in order to neutralize free radicals. The TRX system is triggered and transduces redox signals to do this.

Pollution impact assessment of secondary iron smelting on soil and some medicinal herbs grown at Fasina community in Ile-Ife, Nigeria

Use of medicinal herbs is now gaining popularity especially among the low-income people because it is cheap, readily available and its "seeming" lack of side effects. However, environmental pollution is a potential threat to its continued use. This study examines the effect of air pollution on the soil and consequently on the medicinal herbs grown on such soils. Soil and four medicinal herbs, Chromolaena odorata, Vernonia amygdalina, Carica papaya and Ocimum gratissimum, commonly used in the south western part of Nigeria either as purely medicinal herbs, soup vegetables or both were carefully harvested from Fasina, a polluted area, and Moro, a relatively unpolluted area, all in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Samples were prepared following standard practice and analysed for nickel, chromium, cadmium and lead using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The results showed that elemental concentrations at the two locations were within the permissible limit for both soil and herbs, the statistical test also established no significant difference between the two locations. However, toxic metals concentrations (chromium, cadmium and lead) were found higher at the polluted site while that of the essential metal, nickel, was higher at the unpolluted site. Of the four metals, cadmium has the highest transfer ratio (0.39 and 0.34) while lead has the least (0.21 and 0.25) for Moro and Fasina sites respectively. Similarly, Chromolaena odorata has the highest transfer ratio (0.34) while Carica papaya has the least (0.28). In conclusion, gradual build-up of the toxic metals at the polluted site is evident and may eventually contaminate the herbs.

Structural Properties of Graphene Oxide Prepared from Graphite by Three Different Methods and the Effect on Removal of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solution

Herein, three types of graphene oxides (GOs, GO-M1, GO-M2 and GO-M3) have been successfully prepared from graphite by three different methods and utilized for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Further, the effects of initial concentration and pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature on the adsorption performance of GOs were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms for Cr(VI) adsorption by GOs are mainly the redox reaction and electrostatic attraction, while there are also pore filling, ion exchange and complexation involved in these adsorption processes. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm data indicate that these adsorption processes of GOs on Cr(VI) are dominantly monolayer chemisorption and equilibrium can be reached in 30 min. The saturation adsorption capacities (Q_m, 298.15 K) of GO-M1, GO-M2 and GO-M3 for Cr(VI) are estimated to be 3.5412 mg⋅g^-1, 2.3631 mg⋅g^-1 and 7.0358 mg⋅g^-1, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption thermodynamic study showed that these adsorption processes of Cr(VI) by the three types of GOs at 298.15 K to 323.15 K are endothermic, entropy-driven and thermodynamically spontaneous and feasible. Overall, these findings provided vital insights into the mechanism and application of Cr(VI) removal by GOs.

The Potential Contribution of Hexavalent Chromium to the Carcinogenicity of Chrysotile Asbestos

Chrysotile asbestos is a carcinogenic mineral that has abundantly been used in industrial and consumer applications. The carcinogenicity of the fibers is partly governed by reactive Fe surface sites that catalyze the generation of highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (HO^•) from extracellular hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Chrysotile also contains Cr, typically in the low mass permille range. In this study, we examined the leaching of Cr from fibers at the physiological lung pH of 7.4 in the presence and absence of H₂O₂. Furthermore, we investigated the potential of cells from typical asbestos-burdened tissues and cancers to take up Cr leached from chrysotile in PCR expression, immunoblot, and cellular Cr uptake experiments. Finally, the contribution of Cr to fiber-mediated H₂O₂ decomposition and HO^• generation was studied. Chromium readily dissolved from chrysotile fibers in its genotoxic and carcinogenic hexavalent redox state upon oxidation by H₂O₂. Lung epithelial, mesothelial, lung carcinoma, and mesothelioma cells expressed membrane-bound Cr(VI) transporters and accumulated Cr up to 10-fold relative to the Cr(VI) concentration in the spiked medium. Conversely, anion transporter inhibitors decreased cellular Cr(VI) uptake up to 45-fold. Finally, chromium associated with chrysotile neither decomposed H₂O₂ nor contributed to fiber-mediated HO^• generation. Altogether, our results support the hypothesis that Cr may leach from inhaled chrysotile in its hexavalent state and subsequently accumulate in cells of typically asbestos-burdened tissues, which could contribute to the carcinogenicity of chrysotile fibers. However, unlike Fe, Cr did not significantly contribute to the adverse radical production of chrysotile.

Reduction of hexavalent chromium using bacterial isolates and a microbial community enriched from tannery effluent

We investigated microbial growth in increasing concentrations of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and its reduction by a microbial community enriched from tannery effluent and by the bacterial strains isolated from the enriched community. The bacterial growth was monitored by measuring the optical cell density (OD₆₅₀), while the Cr(VI) concentration in the samples was determined using spectrophotometry and liquid chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). At a Cr(VI) concentration of 100 mg/L, the isolates affiliated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) reached higher optical cell densities, but were in general less effective for Cr(VI) reduction than the isolates affiliated with Mammaliicoccus sciuri (M. sciuri). All three M. sciuri isolates and only one of the seven P. aeruginosa isolates were able to reduce 50% of the Cr(VI) with an initial concentration of 100 mg/L within 24 h (pH 7.1), while the six isolates affiliated with P. aeruginosa were less effective. Compared to the isolated, individual bacterial strains, the enriched microbial community was better adapted to the elevated Cr(VI) concentrations, but needed a longer time (48 h) to reduce the Cr(VI) with the same efficacy as the most efficient individual isolates. The ability of the enriched microbial community and the isolated bacterial strains to reduce the Cr(VI) highlights their potential for use in the rapid bioremediation of wastewaters contaminated with Cr(VI).

Heavy metal contamination of soil, sediment and water due to galena mining in Ebonyi State Nigeria: Economic costs of pollution based on exposure health risks

In this study, the effect of galena mining with respect to heavy metal pollution of groundwater, surface water, soil and sediments in Enyimagalagu and Mkpuma-Akpatakpa Communities in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, was investigated to estimate the health and economic burden. The heavy metals were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The water quality of the groundwater and surface water was determined using the water quality index (WQI). The potential health burden was estimated by determining carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks via risk index (RI) and hazard index (HI), respectively. The potential economic burden was estimated using the value of statistical life (VSL) and cost of illness (COI). Obtained results revealed that the WQI of the groundwater and surface water ranged from 197 to 327 indicating very poor to unsuitable water for drinking. No non-carcinogenic risks were associated with exposure to the soil and sediment components of the environment. However, there were non-carcinogenic risks associated with the surface and groundwater, with the HIs ranging from 1.8 to 5.4. Based on the carcinogenic risk threshold of 10^-6, there were carcinogenic risks across all the environmental media ranging from 8.4*10^-5 - 2.1*10^-3. The economic cost of heavy metal pollution ranged from 20.7 million USD (10.35 billion) to 543.3 million USD (271.6 billion) for the VSL, whereas it ranged from 0.141 million USD (70.8 million) to 3.72 million USD (1.86 billion) for the COI. These costs are quite huge and can be avoided via pollution abatement measures.

Unravelling the emerging carcinogenic contaminants from industrial waste water for prospective remediation by electrocoagulation - A review

The need of the hour relies on finding new but sustainable ways to curb rising pollution levels. The accelerated levels of urbanization and increase in population deplete the finite resources essential for human sustenance. In this aspect, water is one of the non-renewable sources that is running out very fast and is polluted drastically day by day. One way of tackling the problem is to reduce the pollution levels by decreasing the usage of chemicals in the process, and the other is to find ways to reuse or reduce the contaminants in the effluent by treatment methods. Most of the available water recycling or treatment methods are not sustainable. Some of them even use toxic chemicals in the processing steps. Treatment of organic wastes from industries is a challenging task as they are hard to remove. Electrocoagulation is one of the emerging water treatment technologies that is highly sustainable and has a comparatively cheaper operating cost. Being a broad-spectrum treatment process, it is suitable for treating the most common water pollutants ranging from oils, bacteria, heavy metals, and others. The process is also straightforward, where electrical current is used to coagulate the contaminates. The presence of carcinogens in these waste water increases the need for its treatment towards further use. The present investigation is made as an extensive analysis of the emerging carcinogens and their various sources from process industries, especially in the form of organic waste and their removal by electrocoagulation and its coupled techniques. The paper also aims to ascertain why the electrocoagulation technique may be a better alternative compared with other methods for the removal of carcinogens in organic wastewater, an analysis which has not been explored before.

A comprehensive review on human health effects of chromium: insights on induced toxicity

The growing use of heavy metals in most industrial activities has led to it being considered as the most important environmental pollutant that may cause harm and toxicity to animals and humans. Chromium has been found in the environment in different oxidation states such as Cr⁰, Cr(III), and Cr(VI) and is released from a variety of anthropogenic and natural activities. At among, trivalent and hexavalent chromium are the most stable forms. Considerably, Cr(VI) is frequently more toxic than Cr(III) because of its particular solubility and high mobility. Chronic exposure and bioaccumulation of chromium, as a heavy metal, can cause toxicity and numerous pathophysiological defects, including allergic reactions, anemia, burns, and sores especially in the stomach and small intestine, damage to sperm along with the male reproductive system, and affect various biological systems. Chromium pollution can have severe consequences for water and the soil environment. This article reviews the toxicological effects of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) and their mechanisms of toxicity and carcinogenicity.

Chromium toxicity and its remediation by using endophytic bacteria and nanomaterials: A review

Chromium (Cr) is a crucial element for all life forms. Various anthropogenic activities have been responsible for environmental contamination with Cr (VI) in recent years. For this review, articles were collected using electronic databases such as Web of Science, Pubmed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar as per the guidelines of PRISMA-2015, applying the Boolean search methods. Chromium can cause severe health complications in humans and animals and threatens the surrounding environment, with negative impacts on crop yield, development, and quality. Hence, monitoring Cr contamination is essential, and various remediation technologies have emerged in the past 50 years to reduce the amount of Cr in the environment. This review focuses on chromium exposure and the associated environmental health risks. We also reviewed sustainable remediation processes, with emphasis on nanoparticle and endophytic remediation processes.

Unboxing the molecular modalities of mutagens in cancer

The etiology of the majority of human cancers is associated with a myriad of environmental causes, including physical, chemical, and biological factors. DNA damage induced by such mutagens is the initial step in the process of carcinogenesis resulting in the accumulation of mutations. Mutational events are considered the major triggers for introducing genetic and epigenetic insults such as DNA crosslinks, single- and double-strand DNA breaks, formation of DNA adducts, mismatched bases, modification in histones, DNA methylation, and microRNA alterations. However, DNA repair mechanisms are devoted to protect the DNA to ensure genetic stability, any aberrations in these calibrated mechanisms provoke cancer occurrence. Comprehensive knowledge of the type of mutagens and carcinogens and the influence of these agents in DNA damage and cancer induction is crucial to develop rational anticancer strategies. This review delineated the molecular mechanism of DNA damage and the repair pathways to provide a deep understanding of the molecular basis of mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. A relationship between DNA adduct formation and cancer incidence has also been summarized. The mechanistic basis of inflammatory response and oxidative damage triggered by mutagens in tumorigenesis has also been highlighted. We elucidated the interesting interplay between DNA damage response and immune system mechanisms. We addressed the current understanding of DNA repair targeted therapies and DNA damaging chemotherapeutic agents for cancer treatment and discussed how antiviral agents, anti-inflammatory drugs, and immunotherapeutic agents combined with traditional approaches lay the foundations for future cancer therapies.

Catalyst supports based on ZnO-ZnAl2O4 nanocomposites with enhanced selectivity and coking resistance in isobutane dehydrogenation

Development of coking resistant supports and catalysts for hydrocarbons conversion is challenging, especially when using such acidic materials as alumina. Apparently, this problem can be mitigated by using spinels that are less acidic, being, however, thermally stable. In this study, a series of ZnO-ZnAl₂O₄ nanocomposites with different ZnO loading were prepared by urotropine-nitrate combustion synthesis to be used as supports for isobutane dehydrogenation catalysts. The nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, SEM, N₂-physisorption analysis, EDS, H₂-TPR, TPD of NH₃ and tested in isobutane dehydrogenation. Spinels with small amounts of ZnO displayed higher acidity and specific surface areas than samples with a higher ZnO content (30-40 mol%). At the same time, the maximum activity and the lowest selectivity to by-products (CH₄ and C₃H₆) after 10 min of the reaction were observed for the nanocomposite containing 20 mol% of ZnO. The obtained nanocomposites have demonstrated better resistance to coking compared to commercial alumina.

Biosorptive ascendency of plant based biosorbents in removing hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions - Insights into isotherm and kinetic studies

Chromium is a toxic heavy metal prevalent in higher levels in aqueous matrices owing to industrial applications. Whilst being a key player in industries, the environmental issues caused by Cr(VI) are highly deleterious. Adsorptive remediation is found to be an effective method adopted by researchers in the past decades for Cr(VI) removal from water streams in which variety of naturally available biosorbents have been explored for handling Cr(VI). This review article briefly sketches up the biosorptive potential of plant-based biosorbents used in raw and chemically modified form for the optimum exclusion of Cr(VI) from aqueous sources. Mechanisms and kinetic behavior of the removal process are also discussed. pH of the solution and initial Cr(VI) concentration were found to be the key parameters in Cr removal. The mechanism of Cr removal from aqueous systems was elucidated to be either adsorption or adsorption-coupled-reduction. After precise discussion on various plant-based biosorbents with their maximum adsorption capacities, desorption and regeneration potential, it is perceived that plant-based biosorbents are superior options for Cr(VI) elimination from aqueous streams.

Fabrication of Copper(II)-Coated Magnetic Core-Shell Nanoparticles Fe3O4@SiO2: An Effective and Recoverable Catalyst for Reduction/Degradation of Environmental Pollutants

In this work, we report the synthesis of a magnetically recoverable catalyst through immobilizing copper (II) over the Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface [Fe3O4@SiO2-L–Cu(II)] (L = pyridine-4-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazide). Accordingly, synthesized catalysts were determined and characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) procedures. The [Fe3O4@SiO2-L–Cu(II)] was used for the reduction of Cr(VI), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and organic dyes such as Congo Red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) in aqueous media. Catalytic performance studies showed that the [Fe3O4@SiO2–L–Cu(II)] has excellent activity toward reduction reactions under mild conditions. Remarkable attributes of this method are high efficiency, removal of a homogeneous catalyst, easy recovery from the reaction mixture, and uncomplicated route. The amount of activity in this catalytic system was almost constant after several stages of recovery and reuse. The results show that the catalyst was easily separated and retained 83% of its efficiency after five cycles without considerable loss of activity and stability.

Effect of Cerium Tartrate on the Corrosion Resistance of Epoxy Coating on Aluminum Alloy and Its Mechanism

The inhibition effect and mechanism of cerium tartrate (CeTar) as a pigment in epoxy coating on AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution were studied. Two kinds of coatings were applied on the substrate, including a single-layer epoxy coating with CeTar distributed uniformly and a double-layer coating composed of an inner layer doped with CeTar and an outer layer with no CeTar. The protective performances of the coatings were assessed by a Machu test and an Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique. The corrosion inhibition mechanism of CeTar in the coating was analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR). The results show that the addition of CeTar can evidently improve the protective performance of the epoxy coating for a long time (>520 d). This might have relationship with the modification effect on the epoxy coating by cerium salts, and also may be due to the synergistic inhibitory effect by tartrate group and cerium ions on the alloy substrate after their continuous releasing to the coating/alloy interface and forming of a protective film. The double-layer coating provides similar protective properties to the single-layer coating. This suggested that creating a protective film on the aluminum alloy substrate could result in a greater contribution to improving the protection performance of the coating.

Long-term hexavalent chromium exposure disturbs the gut microbial homeostasis of chickens

Industrial production, ore smelting and sewage disposal plant can discharge large amounts of heavy metals every year, which may contaminate soil, water and air, posing a great threat to ecological environment and animal production. Hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)], a recognized metallic contaminant, has been shown to impair kidney, liver and gastrointestinal tract of many species, but little is known about the gut microbial characteristics of chickens exposed to Cr (VI). Herein, this study characterized the gut microbial alternations of chickens exposed to Cr (VI). Results indicated that the gut microbial alpha-diversity in chickens exposed to Cr (VI) decreased significantly, accompanied by a distinct shifts in taxonomic composition. Microbial taxonomic analysis demonstrated that the preponderant phyla (Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria and Epsilonbacteraeota) were the same in both groups, but different in types and relative abundances of dominant genera. Moreover, some bacterial taxa including 2 phyla and 47 genera significantly decreased, whereas 3 phyla and 17 genera significantly increased during Cr (VI) exposure. Among decreased taxa, 9 genera (Coprobacter, Ruminococcus_1, Faecalicoccus, Eubacterium_nodatum_group, Parasutterella, Slackia, Barnesiella, Family_XIII_UCG-001 and Collinsella) even cannot be detected. In conclusion, this study revealed that Cr (VI) exposure dramatically decrased the gut microbial diversity and altered microbial composition of chickens. Additionally, this study also provided a theoretical basis for relieving Cr (VI) poisoning from the perspective of gut microbiota.

Speciation and Bio-Imaging of Chromium in Taraxacum officinale Using HPLC Post-column ID-ICP-MS, High Resolution MS and Laser Ablation ICP-MS Techniques

A new analytical procedure for the speciation of chromium (Cr) in plants by high performance liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) was developed using a strong anion-exchange Mono Q column for the separation of the Cr species. To optimize the analytical procedure, Cr complexes were first synthesized from Cr-nitrate with the addition of an excess of ligand (90°C). Cr-oxalate, Cr-malate, Cr-citrate, Cr-aconitate and Cr-quinate complexes and Cr-nitrate (pH 6.5) were chromatographically separated from Cr(VI) by applying linear gradient elution from 100% water to 100% NH4Cl at a flow rate of 1.5 ml min−1 in 10 min. The column recoveries ranged from 100 to 104%. The exception was Cr-aconitate (column recovery 33%), where a quantitative synthesis was not possible. Good repeatability of the measurements (relative standard deviations better than ± 3%) and low limits of detection (below 0.37 ng ml−1 Cr) were achieved for the individual Cr species. The developed analytical procedure was applied to Cr speciation for dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) grown in soil with a high Cr content and a study of the uptake and metabolism of Cr species in dandelions grown in soil with a low Cr content treated with solutions of Cr(VI) or Cr-nitrate (5000 ng ml−1 Cr, pH 6.5) for 48 h. The separated Cr species were quantified by post-column isotope dilution ICP-MS, while the identification was based on retention times and was also supported by mass spectra obtained with high resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS). The data indicate that for dandelions grown in Cr-rich soil and that treated with Cr-nitrate (pH 6.5), the Cr was mainly accumulated in the roots, while in plants treated with Cr(VI) (pH 6.5), the Cr was evenly distributed between the roots and the leaves. The Cr species found in dandelion roots and leaves were Cr-aconitate, Cr-malate, and Cr-quinate. The results revealed that Cr(VI) was completely reduced and metabolized to Cr(III) complexes. LA-ICP-MS data showed that the Cr in a leaf of dandelion grown in Cr-rich soil was localized mainly at the apex of the leaf.

Identification of a Novel Chromate and Selenite Reductase FesR in Alishewanella sp. WH16-1

A ferredoxin protein (AAY72_06850, named FesR) was identified to associate with chromate [Cr(VI)] resistance in Alishewanella sp. WH16-1. FesR and its similar proteins were phylogenetically separated from other reductase families. Unlike the reported Cr(VI) and selenite [Se(IV)] reductases, two 4Fe-4S clusters and one flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) -binding domain were found in the FesR sequence. The experiment in vivo showed that the mutant strain ΔfesR had lost partial Cr(VI) and Se(IV) reduction capacities compared to the wild-type and complemented strains. Furthermore, overexpression in Escherichia coli and enzymatic tests in vitro showed FesR were involved in Cr(VI) and Se(IV) reduction. 4Fe-4S cluster in purified FesR was detected by ultraviolet-visible spectrum (UV-VIS) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). The Km values of FesR for Cr(VI) and Se(IV) reduction were 1682.0 ± 126.2 and 1164.0 ± 89.4 μmol/L, and the Vmax values for Cr(VI) and Se(IV) reduction were 4.1 ± 0.1 and 9.4 ± 0.3 μmol min^–1 mg^–1, respectively. Additionally, site-directed mutagenesis and redox potential analyses showed that 4Fe-4S clusters were essential to FesR, and FAD could enhance the enzyme efficiencies of FesR as intracellular electron transporters. To the best of our knowledge, FesR is a novel Cr(VI) and Se(IV) reductase.
