Preparation and application of modified zeolites as adsorbents in wastewater treatment

Modification of natural zeolites and their applications for heavy metal removal from polluted environments: Challenges, recent advances, and perspectives

In recent decades, environmental pollution has become a significant problem for human health and environmental impact. The high accumulation of heavy metals in waters and soils from different sources was conducted by finding efficient and environmentally friendly treatment methods and materials for their removal. Natural zeolites have found wide-ranging applications in environmental remediation and protection, considering various treatment and modification methods designed to enhance the natural zeolites' adsorptive or ion-exchange capabilities for increased efficiency. This paper briefly consolidates the recent scientific literature related to the main characteristics of natural and modified zeolites, the advantages and limitations of their environmental remediation application, and summarizes the methodologies applied to natural zeolites in order to improve their properties. Their application for removing heavy metals from water systems and soils is also comprehensively discussed. This review highlights the excellent potential of natural zeolites to be used after specific treatment or modification as a sustainable and green material to solve numerous environmental pollution issues.

Decontaminating liquid-containing Cs-137 by natural Pumice stone

Radionuclides, emanating as consequential by-products of nuclear operations, are recognized as a potent source of environmentally deleterious contamination. In light of these concerns, the present investigation has employed unmodified natural pumice within a batch process to effectuate the removal of Cs-137 radionuclides from real liquid radioactive wastes (RLRWs). The discernment of optimal adsorption parameters encompassed a pH level of 5, a pumice dosage of 3.33 g/L, a mixing duration of 5 min, a mixing speed of 100 revolutions per minute, all maintained at room temperature. The attainment of a peak removal efficiency of 91.75% for Cs-137 substantiates the efficacy of the chosen conditions. Moreover, the determination of regression coefficients (R2) arising from the application of Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm analyses yielded values of 0.91 and 0.96, respectively, thus validating the appropriateness of both models in depicting the adsorption mechanism. Evidently, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model exhibited a high correlation coefficient of 0.99, attesting to its aptitude in characterizing the adsorption dynamics. A thermodynamic appraisal of the process indicated an endothermic nature, offering insights into the fundamental energetics governing the interaction. Consequently, the adsorption phenomenon unfolded predominantly on monolayer, heterogeneous surfaces, with chemical interactions taking precedence on the active pumice sites.

Preparation of novel clay/chitosan/ZnO bio-composite as an efficient adsorbent for tannery wastewater treatment

This study focuses on the preparation of an activated clay/chitosan/ZnO bio-composite using solvent casting method. Clay was activated through microwave radiation using 1 M H2SO4 at a minimum liquid to solid ratio (L/S). Chitosan was extracted from waste prawn shell and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized from zinc acetate di-hydrate (Zn (CH3CO2)2·2H2O) using the sol-gel method. The produced bio-composite were characterized using FT-IR, TGA, XRD and SEM. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for experimental design to find out the optimum conditions, e.g., pH of the solution, dosage of adsorbent and contact time for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and Cr (VI) using MINITAB 18.1 software. The optimum conditions obtained for the highest removal of MB were pH 9.57, dosage 55.44 mg and contact time 114.09 min. Similarly, for the highest removal of Cr (VI) the optimum conditions were pH 3.75, dosage 67.42 mg and contact time 111.27 min. Applying these optimum conditions, the highest removal efficiency for MB and Cr (VI) was obtained at 84.21 % and 82.67 % with 9.57 mg g-1 and 10.45 mg g-1 of adsorption capacity respectively. The adsorption data were studied for both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. The value of maximum Langmuir sorption was (qm) 17.346 mg g-1 and 17.621 mg g-1 for MB and Cr (VI) respectively.

Influence of diatomite and its base modifications on the self-adhesive properties of silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives

The study examined how diatomite and its modifications affected the self-adhesive ability of silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives. To create adhesive composition for testing, fillers were added to a commercial silicone resin, which were then used to create new modified pressure-sensitive tapes. The resulting tapes were tested to determine their adhesion, tack, cohesion at room and elevated temperature, SAFT test (Shear Adhesive Failure Temperature), pot-life (viscosity) and shrinkage. The results obtained were compared with those of the unmodified tapes. The tests resulted in higher thermal resistance (225 °C) and lower shrinkage (0.1%). As a result, we can conclude that materials with thermal resistance with a slight decrease in other parameters were obtained.

Adsorption of heavy metals on natural zeolites: A review

Water pollution has jeopardized human health, and a safe supply of drinking water has been recognized as a worldwide issue. The increase in the accumulation of heavy metals in water from different sources has led to the search for efficient and environmentally friendly treatment methods and materials for their removal. Natural zeolites are promising materials for removing heavy metals from different sources contaminating the water. It is important to know the structure, chemistry, and performance of the removal of heavy metals from water, of the natural zeolites to design water treatment processes. This review focuses on critical analyses of the application of distinct natural zeolites for the adsorption of heavy metals from water, specifically, arsenic (As(III), As(V)), cadmium (Cd(II)), chromium (Cr(III), Cr(VI)), lead (Pb(II)), mercury(Hg(II)) and nickel (Ni(II)). The reported results of heavy-metal removal by natural zeolites are summarized, and the chemical modification of natural zeolites by acid/base/salt reagent, surfactants, and metallic reagents has been analyzed, compared, and described. Furthermore, the adsorption/desorption capacity, systems, operating parameters, isotherms, and kinetics for natural zeolites were described and compared. According to the analysis, clinoptilolite is the most applied natural zeolite to remove heavy metals. It is effective in removing As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, and Ni. Additionally, an interesting fact is a variation between the natural zeolites from different geological origins regarding the sorption properties and capacities for heavy metals suggesting that natural zeolites from different regions of the world are unique.

Ultra-effective modified clinoptilolite adsorbent for selective thorium removal from radioactive residue

This study investigated the efficacy of using phosphate-modified zeolite (PZ) as an adsorbent for removing thorium from aqueous solutions. The effects of various factors such as contact time, adsorbent mass, initial thorium concentration, and pH value of the solution on the removal efficiency were analyzed using the batch technique to obtain optimum adsorption condition. The results revealed that the optimal conditions for thorium adsorption were a contact time of 24 h, 0.03 g of PZ adsorbent, pH 3, and a temperature of 25 °C. Isotherm and kinetics parameters of the thorium adsorption on PZ were also determined, with equilibrium studies showing that the experimental data followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity (Q_o) for thorium was found to be 17.3 mg/g with the Langmuir isotherm coefficient of 0.09 L/mg. Using phosphate anions to modify natural zeolite increased its adsorption capacity. Furthermore, adsorption kinetics studies demonstrated that the adsorption of thorium onto PZ adsorbent fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. The applicability of the PZ adsorbent in removing thorium from real radioactive waste was also investigated, and nearly complete thorium removal was achieved (> 99%) from the leached solution obtained from cracking and leaching processes of rare earth industrial residue under optimized conditions. This study elucidates the potential of PZ adsorbent for efficient removal of thorium from rare earth residue via adsorption, leading to a reduction in waste volume for ultimate disposition.

Rapid start-up and long-term stable operation of the anammox reactor based on biofilm process: Status, challenges, and perspectives

Anammox-biofilm processes have great potential for wastewater nitrogen removal, as it overcomes the slow growth and easy loss of AnAOB (anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria). Biofilm carrier is the core part of the Anammox-biofilm reactor and plays a key role in the start-up and long-term operation of the process. Therefore, the research on the biofilm carrier of Anammox-based process was summarized and discussed in terms of configurations and types. In the Anammox-biofilm process, fixed bed biofilm reactor is a relatively mature biofilm carrier configuration and has advantages in terms of nitrogen removal and long-term operational stability, while moving bed biofilm reactor has advantages in terms of start-up time. Although the long-term operational stability of fluidized bed biofilm reactor is good, its nitrogen removal performance needs to be improved. Among the different biofilm carrier categories, the inorganic biofilm carrier has an advantage in start-up time, due to the enhancement of the growth and metabolic of AnAOB by inorganic materials (such as carbon and iron). Anammox-based reactors using organic biofilm carriers, especially suspension carriers, are well-established and more stable in long-term operation. Composite biofilm carriers combine the advantages of several materials, but their complex preparation procedures lead to high costs. In addition, possible research directions for accelerating the start-up and keeping the long-term stable operation of Anammox reactor by biofilm process were highlighted. It is hoped to provide a possible pathway for the rapid start-up of Anammox-based process, and references for the optimization and promotion of process.

Chitosan Polymer Functionalized-Activated Carbon/Montmorillonite Composite for the Potential Removal of Lead Ions from Wastewater

A simple approach for synthesizing a highly adsorbent composite was described for the uptake of heavy metal ions from wastewater. A simple approach for synthesizing a highly adsorbent composite was also described for the elimination of heavy metal ions from contaminated water. The nanocomposite was synthesized via a polymer grafting of chitosan on the activated carbon surface, followed by a stacking process with the layers of montmorillonite clay. The spectroscopic analyses were exploited to confirm the composite structure of the prepared materials. Various adsorption parameters, such as pH, initial concentration, and adsorption time, were assessed. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of the composite for Pb²⁺ ions increased as the pH increased until it reached pH 5.5. The maximum adsorption capacity was observed at an initial Pb²⁺ level of 20 mg/L and a contact time of 150 min. Kinetic models were evaluated, and the pseudo second-order model showed the best match. The adsorption isotherm data were processed by fitting the model with different isotherm behaviors, and the Langmuir isotherm was found to be the most suitable for the system. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb²⁺ ion on the MMT/CS/AC composite was found to be 50 mg/g at pH 5.5. Furthermore, the composite maintained a high adsorption capability of 85% for five adsorption-desorption cycles. Overall, this composite is envisioned as an addition to the market of wastewater remediation technology due to its chemical structure, which provides influential functional groups for wastewater treatment.

Mitigating abiotic stresses using natural and modified stilbites synergizing with changes in oxidative stress markers in aquaculture

In-depth mineralogical understanding and characterization are necessary to explore potential applications of clinoptilolites. In this study, the clinoptilolite collected from quarries and identified as stilbite microscopically and spectroscopically was subjected to physical and chemical treatments for the synthesis of modified stilbites, which were further evaluated for determining their removal efficiencies on ammonical contaminant in a predetermined concentration range from various source of aquaculture water namely fish pond, aquaponics and ornamental under laboratory condition. High-resolution transmission electron microscope results revealed that stilbite was rod-shaped in all forms but physically modified stilbite contains some nano-zeolite particles, synthesized probably due to heat treatment. The natural zeolite (stilbite) and microwave sodium acetate treated stilbite were found to be most effective in ammonia removal, hence both these products were further evaluated for the removal of cadmium and lead under laboratory conditions and for the ammonia removal in fish pond water under wet lab conditions. The results showed that these zeolites at 10-100 mg/L and 100-200 mg/L had a better removal efficiency of ammonical and metallic contaminants, respectively. Fish samples were taken at particular intervals to determine oxidative stress parameters, i.e., superoxide dismutase and catalase enzyme activities were found to be increased in control fish samples without treatment due to abiotic stress caused by higher ammonia concentration. The levels of oxidative stress markers are decreased in the treatments with zeolite-stilbite which brings to light its potential efficiency in alleviating stress in fish. This study revealed the potential of natural and abundantly available native zeolite-stilbite and its chemically modified form in relieving ammonical stress from the aquaculture system. This work has potential applications for the environmental management of aquaculture, ornamental fisheries, and aquaponics.

Removal of Ammonium Ions from Aqueous Solutions Using Alkali-Activated Analcime as Sorbent

Five alkali-activated analcime (ANA) sorbents (ANA-MK 1, ANA 2, ANA 3, ANA-MK 4, and ANA-MK 5) were developed for ammonium (NH4+) ion removal. Acid treatment and calcination were used as pre-treatments for analcime, and metakaolin (MK) was used as a blending agent in three sorbents. Sorption experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of sorbent dosage (1–20 g L−1), initial NH4+ ion concentration (5–1000 g L−1), and contact time (1 min–24 h). ANA-MK 1, ANA 2, and ANA-MK 4 were the most efficient sorbents for NH4+ ion removal, with a maximum experimental sorption uptake of 29.79, 26.00, and 22.24 mg g−1, respectively. ANA 3 and ANA-MK 5 demonstrated lower sorption capacities at 7.18 and 12.65 mg g−1, respectively. The results for the sorption of NH4+ ions onto the alkali-activated analcime surfaces were modeled using several isotherms. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips, and Bi-Langmuir isotherms were the best isotherm models to represent the studied systems. The results of the kinetic studies showed the maximum NH4+ ion removal percentage of the sorbents was ~80%, except for ANA-MK 5, which had a ~70% removal. Moreover, the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich models were applied to the experimental data. The results showed that the sorption process for ANA-MK 1, ANA 2, ANA 3, and ANA-MK 4 followed the Elovich model, whereas the pseudo-second-order model provided the best correlation for ANA-MK 5.

Adsorptive removal of levofloxacin and antibiotic resistance genes from hospital wastewater by nano-zero-valent iron and nano-copper using kinetic studies and response surface methodology

In the twenty-first century, water contamination with pharmaceutical residues is becoming a global phenomenon and a threat. Antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are recognized as new emerging water pollutants because they can negatively affect aquatic ecosystems and human health, thereby posing a complex environmental problem. These nano-adsorbents of the next generation can remove these pollutants at low concentrations. This study focuses on the chemical synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) and nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) used as nano-adsorbents for levofloxacin removal from water samples and antibiotic-resistant genes. The CuONPs and nZVI are initially characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The levofloxacin adsorption isotherm on the CuONPS and nZVI shows the best fit with the Langmuir isotherm model, exhibiting correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.993 and 0.999, respectively. The adsorption activities of CuONPS and nZVI were fitted to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.983 and 0.994, respectively. The maximum levofloxacin removal capacity was observed at (89%), (84%), (89%), (88%) and (71.6) at pH 7 and adsorbent dose(0.06 mg/L), initial LEV concentration (1 mg/L), temperature 25 °C, and contact time 120 min for CuONPs. Removal efficiency was (91%), (90.6%), (91%), (89%), and (80%), at pH 7, adsorbent dose(0.06), initial LEV concentration (1 mg/L), temperature 35 °C, and contact time 120 min. The levofloxacin adsorption is an exothermic process for nZVI and CuONPs, according to thermodynamic analysis. A thermodynamic analysis indicated that each adsorption process is spontaneous. Several genera, including clinically pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Acinetobacter_baumannii, Helicobacter_pylori, Escherichia_coli, Pseudomonas_aeruginosa, Clostridium_beijerinckii, Escherichia/Shigella_coli, Helicobacter_cetorum, Lactobacillus_gasseri, Bacillus_cereus, Deinococcus_radiodurans, Rhodobacter_sphaeroides, Propionibacterium_acnes, and Bacteroides_vulgatus) were relatively abundant in hospital wastewater. Furthermore, 37 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were quantified in hospital wastewater. The results demonstrated that 95.01% of nZVI and 91.4% of CuONPs are effective adsorbents for removing antibiotic-resistant bacteria from hospital effluent. The synthesized nZVI and CuONPs have excellent reusability and can be considered cost effective and eco-friendly adsorbents.

Modification of Clinoptilolite as a Robust Adsorbent for Highly-Efficient Removal of Thorium (IV) from Aqueous Solutions

The natural zeolite has been modified with sulphate and phosphate. The adsorption of thorium from the aqueous solutions by using the natural and modified zeolites has been investigated via a batch method. The adsorbent samples were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), N₂ adsorption-desorption (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Modification of natural zeolite with sulphate and phosphate was found to increase its adsorption capacity of thorium but reduced its specific surface area (S_BET). The adsorption experiments were expressed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevitch (D-R) isotherm models and the results of adsorption demonstrated that the adsorption of thorium onto the natural and modified zeolites correlated better with the Langmuir isotherm model than with the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qo) was determined using the Langmuir isotherm model at 25 °C and was found to be 17.27, 13.83, and 10.21 mg/g for phosphate-modified zeolite, sulfate-modified zeolite, and natural zeolite, respectively. The findings of this study indicate that phosphate-modified zeolite can be utilized as an effective and low-cost adsorbent material for the removal of thorium from aqueous solutions.

Comprehensive Review on Zeolite-Based Nanocomposites for Treatment of Effluents from Wastewater

All humans and animals need access to clean water in their daily lives. Unfortunately, we are facing water scarcity in several places around the world, and, intentionally or unintentionally, we are contaminating the water in a number of ways. The rise in population, globalization, and industrialization has simultaneously given rise to the generation of wastewater. The pollutants in wastewater, such as organic contaminants, heavy metals, agrochemicals, radioactive pollutants, etc., can cause various ailments as well as environmental damage. In addition to the existing pollutants, a number of new pollutants are now being produced by developing industries. To address this issue, we require some emerging tools and materials to remove effluents from wastewater. Zeolites are the porous aluminosilicates that have been used for the effective pollutant removal for a long time owing to their extraordinary adsorption and ion-exchange properties, which make them available for the removal of a variety of contaminants. However, zeolite alone shows much less photocatalytic efficiency, therefore, different photoactive materials are being doped with zeolites to enhance their photocatalytic efficiency. The fabrication of zeolite-based composites is emerging due to their powerful results as adsorbents, ion-exchangers, and additional benefits as good photocatalysts. This review highlights the types, synthesis and removal mechanisms of zeolite-based materials for wastewater treatment with the basic knowledge about zeolites and wastewater along with the research gaps, which gives a quality background of worldwide research on this topic for future developments.

A novel platform using homobifunctional hydrazide for enrichment and isolation of urinary circulating RNAs

Changes in specific circulating RNA (circRNA) expressions can serve as diagnostic noninvasive biomarkers for prostate cancer (PCa). However, there are still unmet needs, such as unclear types and roles of circRNAs, PCa detection in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by unstandardized methods, and limitations of sample volume capacity and low circRNA concentrations. This study reports a simple and rapid circRNA enrichment and isolation technique named "HAZIS-CirR" for the analysis of urinary circRNAs. The method utilizes homobifunctional hydrazides with amine-modified zeolite and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) syringe filtration for combining electrostatic and covalent coupling and size-based filtration, and it offers instrument-free isolation of circRNAs in 20 min without volume limitation, thermoregulation, and lysis. HAZIS-CirR has high capture efficiency (82.03%-92.38%) and a 10-fold more sensitive detection limit (20 fM) than before enrichment (200 fM). The clinical utility of HAZIS-CirR is confirmed by analyzing circulating mRNAs and circulating miRNAs in 89 urine samples. Furthermore, three miRNA panels that differentiate PCa from BPH and control, PCa from control, and BPH from control, respectively, are established by comparing miRNA levels. HAZIS-CirR will be used as an optimal and established method for the enrichment and isolation of circRNAs as diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers in human cancers.

Onsite Wastewater Treatment Upgrade for Water Reuse in Cooling Towers and Toilets

The increasing population size and housing density are responsible for greater consumption of water resources, causing drinking water shortages in many regions. To reduce water consumption, it is essential to perform wastewater treatment, particularly in onsite non-potable water systems (ONWS). This article discusses the performance of a wastewater treatment system in a shopping mall in Brazil (City of Guarulhos, São Paulo State, Brazil), using data collected over 3 years (2015–2018) that resulted in water reuse ranging from 12 to 42 m³ per day. The strategy used for this wastewater treatment and further reuse in cooling towers and toilets initially included nine steps; after adjustments, an additional step (tertiary decanter) was added. All steps were named as follows: (1) railing; (2) fats boxes; (3) aerobic reactors with selector tank; (4) denitrification; (5) flocculation; (6) secondary decanter; (7) ultrafiltration; (8) disinfection; (9) filtration by zeolites; and (10) tertiary decanter. Based on using FeCl3 as a flocculant followed by filtration by zeolites (SFM) for ion adsorption and removing above 99% of the biological oxygen demand (BOD5), generating a final BOD5 of <2.0 mg/L, total dissolved solids of 130 to 594 mg/L, pH ranging from 6.75 to 7.79, and remaining pathogen-free. This treatment demonstrated the feasibility of reusing water in air conditioning cooling towers and toilets, generating up to 797 m³/month of treated water for reuse with savings of up to 27% in drinking water consumption at the mall.

A Short Review on the Utilization of Incense Sticks Ash as an Emerging and Overlooked Material for the Synthesis of Zeolites

The traditional hydrothermal synthesis methods are mainly performed under batch operation, which generally takes few days to weeks to yield a zeolite with the desired properties and structure. The zeolites are the backbone of the petrochemical and wastewater industries due to their importance. The commercial methods for zeolite synthesis are expensive, laborious and energy intensive. Among waste products, incense sticks ash is a compound of aluminosilicates and could act as a potential candidate for the synthesis of zeolites for daily needs in these industries. Incense sticks ash is the byproduct of religious places and houses and is rich in Ca, Mg, Al and Si. As a result, incense sticks ash can be proven to be a potential candidate for the formation of calcium-rich zeolites. The formation of zeolites from incense sticks ash is an economical, reliable and eco-friendly method. The application of incense sticks ash for zeolite synthesis can also minimize the problem related to its disposal in the water bodies, which will also minimize the solid waste in countries where it is considered sacred and generated in tons every day.

Modeling the impacts of plants and internal organic carbon on remediation performance in the integrated vertical flow constructed wetland

The integrated vertical flow (IVF) constructed wetland consists of two or more chambers with heterogeneous flow patterns and strong aeration capability, possesses favorable remediation performance. The Constructed Wetland Model No.1 (CWM1) embedded in the OpenGeoSys # IPHREEQC was applied to investigate the wetland plant effects on treatment efficiency. Two fundamental functions of the plant roots (i) the radial oxygen loss (ROL) and (ii) exudation of internal organic carbon (IOC), are developed and implemented in the model to simulate the treating processes of planted laboratory-scale IVF wetlands fed by the synthetic wastewater. The good agreement between simulated results and measurements of the planted IVF wetland and the unplanted filters mimicking wetland demonstrates the combined effects of ROL and IOC and the model reliability. In summer the ammonia (NH₄-N) and total nitrogen (TN) removals are high as above 90% in both IVF wetlands, and in winter they decline significantly to around 55% and 45% in unplanted wetland, contrastively to about 85% and 78% in the planted wetland. The nitrogen removal - COD/N ratio relation curves of IVF wetlands are proposed and obtained by modeling to evaluate organic carbon loading status. Based on the curves, the COD/N ratios of unplanted and planted wetlands are about 3∼7 and 3∼10 gCOD/gN for high TN removal respectively. Planted wetlands can tolerate a wider range of COD/N ratio influents than unplanted ones. The ROL in the unplanted wetland promotes COD and NH₄-N removal, while may inhibit denitrification under low-temperature conditions. The single addition of IOC enhances the oxygen-consuming and restrains the nitrification under the full loaded COD condition. Summing up all organic carbon releases from substrate and roots as IOC, the quantification of IOC acts on nitrogen treatment was simulated and compared with the external organic carbon (EOC) loading from influent. IOC performs higher efficiency on TN removal than EOC at the same organic loading rates. The results provide the thoughts of the solution for low TN removal in the carbon deficient constructed wetlands.

Chemico-nanotreatment methods for the removal of persistent organic pollutants and xenobiotics in water - A review

While the technologies available today can generate high-quality water from wastewater, the majority of the wastewater treatment plants are not intended to eliminate emerging xenobiotic pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care items. Most endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and personal care products (PPCPs) are more arctic than most regulated pollutants, and several of them have acid or critical functional groups. Together with the trace occurrence, EDCs and PPCPs create specific challenges for removal and subsequent improvements of wastewater treatment plants. Various technologies have been investigated extensively because they are highly persistent which leads to bioaccumulation. Researchers are increasingly addressing the human health hazards of xenobiotics and their removal. The emphasis of this review was on the promising methods available, especially nanotechnology, for the treatment of xenobiotic compounds that are accidentally released into the setting. In terms of xenobiotic elimination, nanotechnology provides better treatment than chemical treatments and their degradation mechanisms are addressed.

Production of zeolitic materials in pilot scale based on coal ash for phosphate and potassium adsorption in order to obtain fertilizer

The use of different types of zeolites (X, Na-P1, and 4A) synthesized by different methods and scales were tested in this work to adsorb nutrients present in synthetic solutions and industrial effluents for later application as fertilizer. Modifications with calcium chloride were performed on the zeolite with the best performance to increase its adsorption capacity. The best performing zeolite was type X (ZXH) produced on a pilot scale by the hydrothermal process. Its adsorption capacity without modification was 149 mg P-PO₄/g zeolite and 349 mg K/g zeolite. With the change, there was a fourfold increase in these results, which were up to threefold higher than reported in the literature. The kinetic model that best characterized the adsorption process was the intraparticle diffusion model, and the equilibrium isotherm was that of Freundlich. The adsorption tests performed with industrial effluent showed high removal of the nutrients of interest (> 90% for PO₄^3- and > 95% for K⁺). The desorption tests with zeolites nutrient-loaded from synthetic solutions showed 13 to 24% PO₄^3- and 14 to 47% K⁺ release within 24 h, while for zeolite nutrient-loaded from effluent the release were 7 and 100% for PO₄^3- and K⁺, respectively. The results we obtained in this work indicated the potential use of zeolites in the treatment of effluent and its application as a fertilizer.

Overview of Current and Future Perspectives of Saudi Arabian Natural Clinoptilolite Zeolite: A Case Review

After a thorough review of existing studies of clinoptilolite zeolites, three areas for potential investigation of the Saudi Arabian zeolites were found. They are the characterizations, the catalytic activity, active sites, and uses of natural clinoptilolite zeolites. First, no analysis is available worldwide to compare the percentage weight of local zeolites with those sourced from other countries, nor does one exist for the establishment on the zeolite conversion of MBOH with water on acidic catalysts at lower temperatures. Secondly, a review of current literature on the topic revealed that basic and active sites of Saudi Arabian zeolites have yet to be examined. Future investigation of zeolite catalytic activity can be achieved by methyl butynol test reaction (MBOH) and absorption-desorption of ammonia. In the characterization of a range of international materials, the methyl butynol test reaction was utilized, including on natural zeolites, natural clays, and synthesized hydrotalcites. However, the catalytic performance of natural Saudi Arabian clinoptilolite zeolites by test reaction of MBOH conversion has not been yet investigated. Therefore, this article also includes an outline of the general testing conditions and parameters required to execute the accurate characterization of local Saudi clinoptilolite under optimal test conditions. Likewise, knowledge of the important active acidic centers of local materials is prescribed. This can be ascertained by determining the conditions together with the test parameters for the application of the “temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia” method in order to obtain an accurate determination of local Saudi clinoptilolite acidic centers. Additionally, an outline of the catalytic activity of worldwide clinoptilolite is given in this article together with kinetic investigations of other sources for the clinoptilolite zeolite in order to form the basis for the testing of local Saudi clinoptilolite. The percentage average of chemical composition (Wt.%) of natural clinoptilolite from various countries is also included. Finally, a future research plan is proposed here. This will form the basis for a complete study or survey to be compiled detailing the modifications needed to increase the surface areas for Saudi natural clinoptilolite zeolites using different methods of modifications. This could enhance its application as acid catalysts for use in the retardation of coke formation and for membrane separation on cationic exchange.
