Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES A correlation between low handgrip strength (HGS), HGS asymmetry, and low cognitive performance has been demonstrated. However, it remains unclear whether low HGS is associated with psychotic symptoms and whether HGS asymmetry is associated with cognitive and psychotic symptoms in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate the validity of HGS as a measure for assessing cognition and psychotic symptoms in hospitalized patients with stable schizophrenia. METHODS A total of 235 inpatients with stable schizophrenia were recruited between August 1, 2023, and August 31, 2023. The highest HGS values from three tests on the dominant hand were used to determine low HGS (male < 28 kg, female < 18 kg), and HGS asymmetry was identified when the non-dominant HGS/dominant HGS ratio was outside 0.9-1.1. Cognition and psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Chinese Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-C) and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Generalized linear model analyses examined the relationship between HGS and scale scores. RESULTS Covariate-adjusted generalized linear models confirmed a strong association between low HGS alone and the MoCA-C score (OR = 0.819, 95% CI = 0.710‒0.945, p = 0.006) and PANSS score (OR = 1.113, 95% CI = 1.036‒1.239, p = 0.006). Similarly, the combination of low and asymmetric HGS was strongly associated with both MoCA-C (OR = 0.748, 95% CI = 0.653‒0.857, p<0.001) and PANSS scores (OR = 1.118, 95% CI = 1.032‒1.211, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that hospitalized patients with schizophrenia and low HGS, with or without asymmetry, are likely to have lower MoCA-C scores and higher PANSS scores. Screening stable schizophrenia patients with low HGS, with or without asymmetry, could be a valuable and straightforward approach to identifying those with lower cognition and severe psychotic symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are growing concerns associated with increasing diabetes incidence, but data from Indian diabetic cohorts are limited. This study examined the prevalence and clinical factors associated with sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 750 participants aged 35-70 years were recruited by systematic stratification and a fixed quota sampling technique from medical camps and categorized into diabetic (n = 250), nondiabetic (n = 250), and obese nondiabetic (n = 250) groups. The assessments included questionnaires, muscle mass estimation by bioimpedance analysis, and blood tests. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group consensus, and sarcopenic obesity was defined as sarcopenia with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. Logistic regression was used to analyze risk factors. RESULTS Sarcopenia affected 60% of diabetic patients, 28% of nondiabetic patients, and 38% of nonobese nondiabetic patients (p < 0.001). The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was 40%, 11%, and 30%, respectively (p < 0.001). Diabetes was associated with 2.3-fold greater odds (95% CI 1.1-4.7) of sarcopenia and 2.4-fold greater odds (1.1-5.0) of sarcopenic obesity after adjustment. A duration greater than 10 years, uncontrolled diabetes, age greater than 65 years, low physical activity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia also independently increased the odds. CONCLUSION Indian adults with type 2 diabetes have a high burden of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. Early optimization of diabetes care and lifestyle changes are vital for preserving muscle health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study sought to investigate the potential risk factors associated with weak and asymmetric handgrip strength (HGS) in older Chinese adults. METHODS A total of 2702 participants aged ≥65 years from the two waves of data (2011 and 2013) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were analyzed. The highest recorded HGS values (Method A) or the average HGS values (Method B) for the dominant hand were used to compute the HGS asymmetry (nondominant HGS/dominant HGS out of 0.9-1.1) and HGS weakness (male <28 kg, female <18 kg). Risk factors associated with the weak and asymmetric HGS were identified by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Risk factors associated with weak and asymmetric HGS of varying severity differed between the two methods. Both methods identified age and illiteracy as risk factors for weak HGS with 10%-20% asymmetry. Method A also identified speech impediment, stroke, and sleep duration as additional risk factors. Similarly, both methods identified age, illiteracy, primary school education and below, diabetes, and stroke as risk factors for weak HGS and asymmetry over 30.1%. Method B additionally identified a history of falls as a risk factor. However, apart from age, the risk factors for weak HGS with 20.1%-30% asymmetry differed between the two methods-Method A identified kidney disease, while Method B identified illiteracy and asthma. CONCLUSIONS The results revealed that risk factors associated with the abnormal HGS in older adults varied based on the methods used to define these conditions.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to examine the link between handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry and mortality risk among older Chinese adults. METHODS These analyses were conducted using data from adults aged 60 years and older from the 2011-2013 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, using baseline participant data collected in 2011. Proxy-reported information was used to assess the mortality outcomes of the participants over a 2-year follow-up. The highest recorded HGS values for each hand were used to compute the HGS asymmetry ratio (non-dominant HGS/dominant HGS) and HGS weakness (Male<26 kg, Female<16 kg). Covariate-adjusted Cox models were employed to gauge the relationship between abnormal HGS and mortality risk. RESULTS Overall, 5083 adults were enrolled in this study, of whom 50.15% (2549/5083) were male. The proportions of low HGS alone, HGS asymmetry alone, and asymmetric and low HGS were 6.43%, 30.95%, and 9.22%, respectively, in males, and 4.81%, 35.87%, and 9.55%, respectively, in females. A total of 96 and 78 deaths were recorded for male (3.77%) and female (3.08%) participants, respectively, over the 2-year follow-up period. Significant differences in mortality were observed between the different HGS groups for both sexes. An adjusted Cox regression analysis model confirmed that only low HGS (P = 0.047, hazard ratio [HR] = 1.949, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.008-3.768) and low HGS with asymmetry (P = 0.007, HR = 2.152, 95% CI: 1.231-3.764) were significantly associated with mortality risk in older males. CONCLUSIONS The results revealed that low HGS with or without asymmetry was associated with a higher risk of death over a 2-year follow-up interval in older Chinese males. Abstract
BACKGROUND The worldwide epidemic of weight gain and obesity is increasing in response to the evolution of lifestyles. Our aim is to provide a new predictive method for current and future weight status estimation based on individual and behavioral characteristics. METHODS The data of 273 normal (NW), overweight (OW) and obese (OB) subjects were assigned either to the training or to the test sample. The multi-layer perceptron classifier (MLP) classified the data into one of the three weight statuses (NW, OW, OB), and the classification model accuracy was determined using the test dataset and the confusion matrix. RESULTS On the basis of age, height, light-intensity physical activity and the daily number of vegetable portions consumed, the multi-layer perceptron classifier achieved 75.8% accuracy with 90.3% for NW, 34.2% for OW and 66.7% for OB. The NW and OW subjects showed the highest and the lowest number of true positives, respectively. The OW subjects were very often confused with NW. The OB subjects were confused with OW or NW 16.6% of the time. CONCLUSIONS To increase the accuracy of the classification, a greater number of data and/or variables are needed.

Abstract
Molecules such as cytokines, energetic substrates, and hormones found in the immune cell environment, especially lymphocytes and monocytes, are crucial for directing energy metabolism. In turn, changes in energy metabolism occur in a synchronized manner with the activation of certain signaling pathways, thereby this crosstalk is responsible for determining the functionality of immune cells. The immunometabolism field has grown over time and that is becoming increasingly promising in several populations; here we discuss the mechanisms involved in sedentary and physically active middle-aged individuals and master athletes. In this context, this review shows that the physical activity status and lifelong exercise seems to be good strategies for the promotion of metabolic and functional adaptations in T lymphocytes and monocytes, counteracting inflammatory environments caused by expanded adipose tissue and sedentary behavior, as well as delaying the immunosenescence caused by aging.

Leading Factors for Weight Gain during COVID-19 Lockdown in a Spanish Population: A Cross-Sectional Study. Nutrients 2021; 13:nu13030894. Abstract
The increase in sedentary behaviors during the COVID-19-induced lockdown may have led to a significant weight gain. To investigate this hypothesis, a representative sample of the Spanish adult population comprising 1000 subjects was enrolled in a cross-sectional study between 26 May and 10 June 2020. Computer-assisted telephone interviews were conducted consisting of 29 questions on the topic of lifestyle habits during the lockdown. The cohort comprised 51.5% women and 51% overweight or obese subjects and had a mean age of 50 ± 18 years. Of the respondents, 44.5% self-reported weight gain during the lockdown; of these, 58.0% were women, 69.9% had previous excess weight, 44.7% lived with a relative who also gained weight, and 73.5 experienced increased appetite. Further, an increased consumption of energy-dense products was found relative to respondents who did not gain weight (p ≤ 0.016 for all). Additionally, respondents were unaware that obesity is a poor prognostic factor for COVID-19 infection, lived in smaller flats, and had a lower level of education and lower monthly income. The factors independently associated with weight gain were female gender, previous overweight or obesity, lack of food care, increased appetite, and increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, alcoholic beverages, and snacks (p ≤ 0.023 for all). Should another lockdown be mandated, extra caution is warranted to prevent weight gain.
