On the Road to Biopolymer Aerogels-Dealing with the Solvent

Integrated processes (HPSE+scCO2) to prepare sterilized alginate-gelatine-based aerogel

Biopolymers application in biomedical areas has been limited due to the physicochemical degradation that occurs using conventional processing/sterilization methods (e.g., steam heat, γ-radiation, ethylene oxide). Aiming to avoid/minimize degradation and preserve their properties, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has been proposed as an alternative sterilization method for such materials. ScCO2 can simultaneously be used as a drying method to produce aerogels (i) and sterilize them (ii). However, a solvent exchange is required to prepare the alcogel from hydrogel, achievable through high-pressure solvent exchange (HPSE) (iii). This study integrated three processes: HPSE, scCO2 drying, and sterilization to prepare alginate-gelatine sterilized aerogels. Two scCO2 sterilization methods were tested. Results showed that sterilization did not compromise the aerogels' chemical, thermal and swelling properties. Conversely, Young's Modulus increased, and BET surface area decreased, due to the structural changes caused by the fast pressurization/depressurization rates applied during sterilization. Regarding the sterilization efficiency, results showed a reduction in contamination throughout the process, achieving a SAL of 10-4. The sterilized aerogels were non-cytotoxic in vitro and showed improved wound-healing properties. The innovative integrated process produced decontaminated/sterile and ready-to-use aerogels reducing process time by 75 %, from 2 days up to 12 h without compromising the aerogel's properties.

Antimicrobial peptide immobilization on catechol-functionalized PCL/alginate wet-spun fibers to combat surgical site infection

Surgical site infection (SSI) caused by pathogenic bacteria leads to delayed wound healing and extended hospitalization. Inappropriate uses of antibiotics have caused a surge in SSI and common antibiotics are proving to be ineffective against SSI. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can be a potential solution to prevent SSI because of their broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities. In this study, naturally sourced AMPs were studied along with microfibers, fabricated by a novel wet-spinning method using sodium alginate and polycaprolactone. Afterward, fibers were functionalized by the catechol groups of dopamine immobilizing nucleophilic AMPs on the surface. Conjugation between PCL and alginate resulted in fibers with smooth surfaces improving their mechanical strength via hydrogen bonds. Having an average diameter of 220 μm, the mechanical properties of the fiber complied with USP standards for suture size 3-0. Engineered microfibers were able to hinder the growth of Proteus spp., a pathogenic bacterium for at least 60 hours whereas antibiotic ceftazidime failed. When subjected to a linear incisional wound model study, accelerated healing was observed when the wound was closed using the engineered fiber compared to Vicryl. The microfibers promoted faster re-epithelialization compared to Vicryl proving their higher wound healing capacity.

Impact of Weak Organic Acids as Coagulants on Tailoring the Properties of Cellulose Aerogel Beads

Tailoring the properties of cellulose aerogel beads was investigated in the present study by using weak organic acids as coagulants. Three different weak acids were specifically chosen, acetic acid, lactic acid and citric acid. For comparative studies, a strong acid, hydrochloric acid was examined. The production of aerogel beads by conventional dropping technique was controlled and optimized for weak acids. Aerogels were characterized by density analyses, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray powder diffractometry and IR spectroscopy. In common, all the aerogel beads showed interconnected nanofibrillar network, high specific surface area, high pore volume, high porosity and meso- and macroporous structure. In particular, when the weakest acid (acetic acid) was used as coagulant in the regeneration bath, the lowest shrinkage was observed. As a result, the cellulose aerogel beads produced from acetic acid showed the highest values of specific surface area (423 m2 g-1) and pore volume (3.6 cm3 g-1). The porous structure can be tuned by the choice of regeneration bath, which has either strong acid or a high concentration of weak acid. The aerogel beads were pure and showed cellulose II crystallinity. Hence this study paves an alternative path way to tailor the properties of cellulose aerogel beads.

Polymerization/Depolymerization-Induced Self-Assembly under Coupled Equilibria of Polymerization with Self-Assembly

Depolymerization breaks down polymer chains into monomers like unthreading beads, attracting more attention from a sustainability standpoint. When polymerization reaches equilibrium, polymerization and depolymerization can reversibly proceed by decreasing and increasing the temperature. Here, we demonstrate that such dynamic control of a growing polymer chain in a selective solvent can spontaneously modulate the self-assembly of block copolymer micellar nano-objects. Compared to polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), where irreversible growth of a solvophobic polymer block from the end of a solvophilic polymer causes micellization, polymerization/depolymerization-induced self-assembly presented in this study allows us to reversibly regulate the packing parameter of the forming block copolymer and thus induce reversible morphological transitions of the nano-objects by temperature swing. Under the coupled equilibria of polymerization with self-assembly, we found that demixing of the growing polymer block in a more selective solvent entropically facilitates depolymerization at a substantially lower temperature. Taking ring-opening polymerization of δ-valerolactone initiated from the hydroxyl-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) as a model system, we show that polymerization/depolymerization/repolymerization leads to reversible morphological transitions, such as rod-sphere-rod and fiber-rod-fiber, during the heating and cooling cycle and accompanied by changes in macroscopic properties such as viscosity, suggesting their potential as dynamic soft materials.

Mechanically Strengthened Aerogels through Multiscale, Multicompositional, and Multidimensional Approaches: A Review

In recent decades, aerogels have attracted tremendous attention in academia and industry as a class of lightweight and porous multifunctional nanomaterial. Despite their wide application range, the low mechanical durability hinders their processing and handling, particularly in applications requiring complex physical structures. "Mechanically strengthened aerogels" have emerged as a potential solution to address this drawback. Since the first report on aerogels in 1931, various modified synthesis processes have been introduced in the last few decades to enhance the aerogel mechanical strength, further advancing their multifunctional scope. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art developments of mechanically strengthened aerogels through multicompositional and multidimensional approaches. Furthermore, new trends and future directions for as prevailed commercialization of aerogels as plastic materials are discussed.

Innovative strategies for enhancing gas separation: Ionic liquid-coated PES membranes for improved CO2/N2 selectivity and permeance

As a cost-effective advancement in membrane technology, this study investigates the impact of PEG additive and CBT on the structural, stability, and gas permeance properties of PES-coated membranes, utilizing 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid ([DDMI][Cl] IL) as a carrier liquid. BET and FT-IR analyses highlight the significant enhancement in performance through the immobilization of pores with [DDMIM][Cl] IL. The investigation focuses on PES-M5-coated membranes, revealing excellent stability in finger-like pore structures prepared through direct immersion and nitrogen pressure immobilization. PES-M5-coated membranes with [DDMIM][Cl] IL via direct immersion experience lower weight loss than those coated using nitrogen pressure, with critical pressures at 1.4 and 1.25 bar, respectively. The study identifies PES-coated membranes, particularly PES-M25 (20.88 GPU) with macro-void pores and PES-M5 (29 GPU) with finger-like pores, exhibiting the highest CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity. As a cost-effective advancement in membrane technology, ionic liquids are employed in support membranes to enhance gas separation. Employing pure PES membranes with varying pore structures, created through the NIPS method, the study immobilizes [DDMI][Cl] IL in membrane pores through nitrogen pressure and direct immersion. Results underscore the successful application of porous support materials coated with ionic liquids for continuous CO2 and sulfur compound separation, showcasing competitive permeability and selectivity compared to traditional polymer membranes.

Production of Kudzu Starch Gels with Superior Mechanical and Rheological Properties through Submerged Ethanol Exposure and Implications for In Vitro Digestion

Producing starch gels with superior mechanical attributes remains a challenging pursuit. This research sought to develop a simple method using ethanol exposure to produce robust starch gels. The gels' mechanical properties, rheology, structural characteristics, and digestion were assessed through textural, rheological, structural, and in vitro digestion analyses. Our investigation revealed an improvement in the gel's strength from 62.22 to178.82 g. The thermal transitions were accelerated when ethanol was elevated. The exposure to ethanol resulted in a reduction in syneresis from 11% to 9.5% over a period of 6 h, with noticeable changes in size and color. Rheologically, the dominating storage modulus and tan delta (<0.55) emphasized the gel's improved elasticity. X-ray analysis showed stable B- and V-type patterns after ethanol exposure, with relative crystallinity increasing to 7.9%. Digestibility revealed an ethanol-induced resistance, with resistant starch increasing from 1.87 to 8.73%. In general, the exposure to ethanol played a crucial role in enhancing the mechanical characteristics of kudzu starch gels while simultaneously preserving higher levels of resistant starch fractions. These findings have wide-ranging implications in the fields of confectioneries, desserts, beverages, and pharmaceuticals, underscoring the extensive academic and industrial importance of this study.

The effect of synthesis conditions and process parameters on aerogel properties

Aerogels are remarkable nanoporous materials with unique properties such as low density, high porosity, high specific surface area, and interconnected pore networks. In addition, their ability to be synthesized from various precursors such as inorganics, organics, or hybrid, and the tunability of their properties make them very attractive for many applications such as adsorption, thermal insulation, catalysts, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. The physical and chemical properties and pore structure of aerogels are crucial in determining their application areas. Moreover, it is possible to tailor the aerogel properties to meet the specific requirements of each application. This review presents a comprehensive review of synthesis conditions and process parameters in tailoring aerogel properties. The effective parameters from the dissolution of the precursor step to the supercritical drying step, including the carbonization process for carbon aerogels, are investigated from the studies reported in the literature.

Insights into the Potential of Biopolymeric Aerogels as an Advanced Soil-Fertilizer Delivery Systems

Soil fertilizers have the potential to significantly increase crop yields and improve plant health by providing essential nutrients to the soil. The use of fertilizers can also help to improve soil structure and fertility, leading to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems. However, overuse or improper use of fertilizers can lead to soil degradation, which can reduce soil fertility, decrease crop yields, and damage ecosystems. Thus, several attempts have been made to overcome the issues related to the drawbacks of fertilizers, including the development of an advanced fertilizer delivery system. Biopolymer aerogels show promise as an innovative solution to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of soil-fertilizer delivery systems. Further research and development in this area could lead to the widespread adoption of biopolymer aerogels in agriculture, promoting sustainable farming practices and helping to address global food-security challenges. This review discusses for the first time the potential of biopolymer-based aerogels in soil-fertilizer delivery, going through the types of soil fertilizer and the advert health and environmental effects of overuse or misuse of soil fertilizers. Different types of biopolymer-based aerogels were discussed in terms of their potential in fertilizer delivery and, finally, the review addresses the challenges and future directions of biopolymer aerogels in soil-fertilizer delivery.

Biophysical Electrical and Mechanical Stimulations for Promoting Chondrogenesis of Stem Cells on PEDOT:PSS Conductive Polymer Scaffolds

The investigation of the effects of electrical and mechanical stimulations on chondrogenesis in tissue engineering scaffolds is essential for realizing successful cartilage repair and regeneration. The aim of articular cartilage tissue engineering is to enhance the function of damaged or diseased articular cartilage, which has limited regenerative capacity. Studies have shown that electrical stimulation (ES) promotes mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) chondrogenesis, while mechanical stimulation (MS) enhances the chondrogenic differentiation capacity of MSCs. Therefore, understanding the impact of these stimuli on chondrogenesis is crucial for researchers to develop more effective tissue engineering strategies for cartilage repair and regeneration. This study focuses on the preparation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) conductive polymer (CP) scaffolds using the freeze-drying method. The scaffolds were fabricated with varying concentrations (0, 1, 3, and 10 wt %) of (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GOPS) as a crosslinker and an additive to tailor the scaffold properties. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the material characteristics and the phase aggregation phenomenon of PEDOT:PSS scaffolds, the researchers performed theoretical calculations of solubility parameters and surface energies of PSS, PSS-GOPS, and PEDOT polymers, as well as conducted material analyses. Additionally, the study investigated the potential of promoting chondrogenic differentiation of human adipose stem cells by applying external ES or MS on a PEDOT:PSS CP scaffold. Compared to the group without stimulation, the group that underwent stimulation exhibited significantly up-regulated expression levels of chondrogenic characteristic genes, such as SOX9 and COL2A1. Moreover, the immunofluorescence staining images exhibited a more vigorous fluorescence intensity of SOX9 and COL II proteins that was consistent with the trend of the gene expression results. In the MS experiment, the strain excitation exerted on the scaffold was simulated and transformed into stress. The simulated stress response showed that the peak gradually decreased with time and approached a constant value, with the negative value of stress representing the generation of tensile stress. This stress response quantification could aid researchers in determining specific MS conditions for various materials in tissue engineering, and the applied stress conditions could be further optimized. Overall, these findings are significant contributions to future research on cartilage repair and biophysical ES/MS in tissue engineering.

Solubility and thermodynamic study of deferiprone in propylene glycol and ethanol mixture

This work aims to obtain the solubility, density and thermodynamic parameters of deferiprone in propylene glycol and ethanol. For this purpose, a shake-flask technique was applied for solid-liquid equilibration and the spectrophotometry method was employed for solubility measurement. Solubility and density of deferiprone in non-aqueous mixtures of propylene glycol and ethanol were measured in the temperatures 293.2-313.2 K. Some equations including van't Hoff, the Jouyban-Acree, the Jouyban-Acree-van't Hoff, the mixture response surface and modified Wilson equations were used for the mathematical data modeling. The apparent thermodynamic parameters of the deferiprone dissolution process were computed and reported.

Systematic comparison of a biotrickling filter and a conventional filter for the removal of a mixture of hydrophobic VOCs by Candida subhashii

This work systematically compared the potential of a conventional fungal biofilter (BF) and a fungal biotrickling filter (BTF) for the abatement of a mixture of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Candida subhashii was herein used for the first time, to the best of the author's knowledge, to remove n-hexane, trichloroethylene, toluene and α-pinene under aerobic conditions. C. subhashii immobilized on polyurethane foam supported steady state removal efficiencies of n-hexane, trichloroethylene, toluene and α-pinene of 25.4 ± 0.9%, 20.5 ± 1.0%, 19.6 ± 1.5% and 25.6 ± 2.8% in the BF, and 35.7 ± 0.9%, 24.0 ± 1.6%, 44.0 ± 1.7% and 26.2 ± 1.8% in the BTF, respectively, at relatively short gas residence times (30 s). The ability of C. subhashii to biodegrade n-hexane, TCE, toluene and α-pinene was confirmed in a batch test conducted in serum bottles, where a biodegradation pattern (toluene ≈ n-hexane > α-pinene > trichloroethylene) comparable to that recorded in the BF and BTF was recorded.

Assessing the compressive elasticity and multi-responsive property of gelatin-containing weakly anionic copolymer gels via semi-IPN strategy

A series of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogels based on acrylamide (AAm) and itaconic acid (ITA) was prepared in the presence of different amounts of the natural polymer gelatin (GLN). The semi-IPNs were synthesized by simultaneous polymerization using N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent. A pH-sensitive system was obtained by adding 2 mol% ITA as an anionic comonomer. The effect of GLN content by changing the amine/carboxyl functional groups and incorporating carboxyl groups of ITA in semi-IPN on the swelling, elasticity and physical properties of the hydrogels was investigated. The presence of GLN improved the thermal stability, and the GLN-containing semi-IPNs exhibited a higher degradation temperature compared to the GLN-free copolymers. The addition of a small amount of GLN could effectively increase the swelling of the semi-IPNs in water. By employing the GLN-containing semi-IPN as a model system, the solvent/matrix interactions were demonstrated to reveal the effect of solvent structure on the swelling-shrinkage response. The addition of GLN improved the pH-sensitivity of the semi-IPN gels, resulting in a clear response to pH change by action of NH₃⁺ and COOH of GLN and additional COOH groups from ITA. The mechanical performance of the copolymer network was improved by entangling PAAm/ITA chains with GLN, which acted as a reinforcement node. In terms of the effect of Hofmeister anions on the swelling behavior, the anion effect became more pronounced with salt concentration. The affinity of semi-IPNs towards the cationic dyes methylene blue and malachite green was tested and the dependence of the adsorption process on the initial dye concentration, contact time and GLN content was determined. This method presents a simple and efficient approach for the design of chemically crosslinked protein-based gels for drug delivery applications.

Recovery of Model Pharmaceutical Compounds from Water and Organic Solutions with Alginate-Based Composite Membranes

In this work, we combined the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and further cross-linking by cations towards the preparation of nanofiltration membranes based on sodium alginate, a biodegradable, natural polymer. Acetone, ethanol, toluene, and hexane were used as non-solvents, and cations of calcium, silver, and aluminum—for polymer cross-linking, respectively. Results showed the precipitation strength of non-solvent played a noticeable role in the membrane’s performance; for instance, the toluene permeability changed by four orders of magnitude with the decrease of precipitation strength of the non-solvent: acetone (P_toluene = 0.1 kg∙m⁻²∙h⁻¹∙bar⁻¹) < ethanol (3 kg∙m⁻²∙h⁻¹∙bar⁻¹) < hexane (41 kg∙m⁻²∙h⁻¹∙bar⁻¹) < toluene (415 kg∙m⁻²∙h⁻¹∙bar⁻¹). It was shown that simultaneous precipitation and crosslinking in aqueous solutions AlCl₃ or AgNO₃ must be used in the preparation of alginate membranes for the highly selective recovery of pharmaceutical compounds from organic media. These membranes show rejection R = 90–93% of substances with MW = 626 g/mol and ethanol permeability P_EtOH = 1.5–2.5 kg∙m⁻²∙h⁻¹∙bar⁻¹. For the highly selective recovery of pharmaceutical compounds from water, the method of obtaining membranes must be changed. Precipitation in toluene and then crosslinking in aqueous solutions of AlCl₃ or AgNO₃ must be used sequentially instead of simultaneous precipitation and crosslinking in aqueous solutions of the same inorganic salts. The permeability of such membranes varied from 0.44 to 7.8 kg∙m⁻²∙h⁻¹∙bar⁻¹ depending on the crosslinking cation in the alginate. The rejection of model substances with MW 350 and 626 g/mol were on the level of 99%. Alginate membranes can be used to solve separation problems in the pharmaceutical field, for example, to isolate antibiotics from their extractants and remove the same antibiotics from aqueous pharmaceutical waste to prevent their accumulation in the environment and the emergence of resistant genes and bacteria.

Smart Hydrogels: Preparation, Characterization, and Determination of Transition Points of Crosslinked N-Isopropyl Acrylamide/Acrylamide/Carboxylic Acids Polymers

Smart hydrogels (SH) were prepared by thermal free radical polymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm), acrylamide (AAm) with acrylic acid (A) or maleic acid (M), and N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide. Spectroscopic and thermal characterizations of SHs were performed using FTIR, TGA, and DSC. To determine the effects of SHs on swelling characteristics, swelling studies were performed in different solvents, solutions, temperatures, pHs, and ionic strengths. In addition, cycle equilibrium swelling studies were carried out at different temperatures and pHs. The temperature and pH transition points of SHs are calculated using a sigmoidal equation. The pH transition points were calculated as 5.2 and 4.2 for SH-M and SH-A, respectively. The NIPAAm/AAm hydrogel exhibits a critical solution temperature (LCST) of 28.35 °C, while the SH-A and SH-M hydrogels exhibit the LCST of 34.215 °C and 28.798 °C, respectively, and the LCST of SH-A is close to the body. temperature. Commercial (CHSA) and blood human serum albumin (BHSA) were used to find the adsorption properties of biopolymers on SHs. SH-M was the most efficient SH, adsorbing 49% of CHSA while absorbing 16% of BHSA. In conclusion, the sigmoidal equation or Gaussian approach can be a useful tool for chemists, chemical engineers, polymer and plastics scientists to find the transition points of smart hydrogels.

The dielectric and polarization behavior of polyurethane-based polycarbonate diols with different content levels of fluorinated hard segments

The addition of a fluorinated chain improved the polarization in polyurethane, shifted the relaxation peaks, and changed the hysteresis loop behavior from a ferroelectric to a paraelectric phase.

Nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials: A review

Nanocellulose has been widely concerned and applied in recent years. Because of its high aspect ratio, large specific surface area, good modifiability, high mechanical strength, renewability and biodegradability, nanocellulose is particularly suitable as a base for constructing lightweight porous materials. This review summarizes the preparation methods and applications of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials including aerogels, cryogels, xerogels, foams and sponges. The preparation of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials usually involves gelation and drying processes. The characteristics and influencing factors of three main drying methods including freeze, supercritical and evaporation drying are reviewed. In addition, the mechanism of physical and chemical crosslinking during gelation and the effect on the structure and properties of the porous materials in different drying methods are especially focused on. This contribution also introduces the application of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials in the fields of adsorption, biomedicine, energy storage, thermal insulation and sound absorption, flame retardancy and catalysis.

A Review on Revolutionary Natural Biopolymer-Based Aerogels for Antibacterial Delivery

A biopolymer-based aerogel has been developed to become one of the most potentially utilized materials in different biomedical applications. The biopolymer-based aerogel has unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties and these properties are used in tissue engineering, biosensing, diagnostic, medical implant and drug delivery applications. Biocompatible and non-toxic biopolymers such as chitosan, cellulose and alginates have been used to deliver antibiotics, plants extract, essential oils and metallic nanoparticles. Antibacterial aerogels have been used in superficial and chronic wound healing as dressing sheets. This review critically analyses the utilization of biopolymer-based aerogels in antibacterial delivery. The analysis shows the relationship between their properties and their applications in the wound healing process. Furthermore, highlights of the potentials, challenges and proposition of the application of biopolymer-based aerogels is explored.

Effect of Ethanol on the Textural Properties of Whey Protein and Egg White Protein Hydrogels during Water-Ethanol Solvent Exchange

This study aims at investigating the effect of ethanol (EtOH) on the textural properties of whey protein and egg white protein hydrogels. The hydrogels were produced by thermally induced gel formation of aqueous protein solutions. The water contained in the gel network was subsequently exchanged by EtOH to assess structural changes upon exposure of hydrogels to ethanolic aqueous phases. The textural properties of the hydrogel and alcogel samples were analyzed by uniaxial compression tests. For both protein sources, the hardness increased exponentially when pH and EtOH concentration were increased. This increase correlated with a shrinkage of the gel samples. The gel texture was found to be elastic at low EtOH concentrations and became stiff and hard at higher EtOH concentrations. It was found that the solvent exchange influences the ion concentration within the gels and, therefore, the interactions between molecules in the gel structure. Non-covalent bonds were identified as substantially responsible for the gel structure.

Starch-Based Aerogels Obtained via Solvent-Induced Gelation

In this work, the ability of several solvents to induce gel formation from amylomaize starch solubilized in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was investigated. The formed gels were subjected to solvent exchange using ethanol and dried with supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO₂) to obtain the aerogels. The influence of starch concentration (3–15 wt%) and solvent content (20–80 wt%) on gel formation was also studied. It was demonstrated that the gelation of starch in binary mixtures of solvents can be rationalized by Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP) revealing a crucial hole of hydrogen bonding for the gel’s strength, which is in agreement with rheological measurements. Only the addition of water or propylene glycol to starch/DMSO solutions resulted in strong gels at a minimum starch and solvent content of 7.5 wt% and 50 wt%, respectively. The resulting aerogels showed comparably high specific surface areas (78–144 m² g⁻¹) and low envelope densities (0.097–0.203 g cm⁻³). The results of this work indicate that the HSP parameters could be used as a tool to guide the rational selection of water-free gelation in starch/DMSO systems. In addition, it opens up an attractive opportunity to perform starch gelation in those solvents that are miscible with sc-CO₂, avoiding the time-consuming step of solvent exchange.

Hourglass-Shaped Microfibers

Heterotypic microfibers have been recognized as promising building blocks for the multifunctionality demanded in various fields, such as environmental and biomedical engineering. We present a novel microfluidics-based technique to generate bio-inspired microfibers with hourglass-shaped knots (named hourglass-shaped microfibers) via the integration of a non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The microfibers with spindle knots (named spindle-microfibers) are generated as templates at a large scale. The morphologies of spindle-microfibers can be precisely regulated by controlling the flow rates of the constituent fluids. After post-treatment of the partially gelled spindle-microfibers in ethanol, the encapsulated oil cores leak from knots, and the fibers morph into an hourglass shape. By controlling the oil core spillage and the template's configurations, a variety of hourglass-shaped microfibers can be obtained with adjustable morphologies and densities ranging from those of cavity-microfibers to those of spindle-microfibers. The hourglass-shaped microfibers preponderate spindle-microfibers in terms of changeable weight, adjustable morphologies, high specific surface areas, and enhanced surface roughness. Their unique macroscale topographies and properties lead to enhanced dehumidification and water collection abilities. This NIPS-integrated microfluidic technique offers a promising and novel way to manufacture microfibers by design, tailoring their structures and properties to suit a desired application.

New Trends in Bio-Based Aerogels

(1) Background: The fascinating properties of currently synthesized aerogels associated with the flexible approach of sol-gel chemistry play an important role in the emergence of special biomedical applications. Although it is increasingly known and mentioned, the potential of aerogels in the medical field is not sufficiently explored. Interest in aerogels has increased greatly in recent decades due to their special properties, such as high surface area, excellent thermal and acoustic properties, low density and thermal conductivity, high porosity, flame resistance and humidity, and low refractive index and dielectric constant. On the other hand, high manufacturing costs and poor mechanical strength limit the growth of the market. (2) Results: In this paper, we analyze more than 180 articles from recent literature studies focused on the dynamics of aerogels research to summarize the technologies used in manufacturing and the properties of materials based on natural polymers from renewable sources. Biomedical applications of these bio-based materials are also introduced. (3) Conclusions: Due to their complementary functionalities (bioactivity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and unique chemistry), bio-based materials provide a vast capability for utilization in the field of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific research.

Novel alginate-chitosan aerogel fibres for potential wound healing applications

Aerogels produced from marine polymers, such as chitosan and alginate, are of interest for wound healing applications due to their attractive properties. These properties can be the aerogel's high porosity along with the antimicrobial activity of chitosan or the capacity to provide a moist environment of alginate. The aim of this work was to develop a new route towards hybrid alginate-chitosan aerogel fibres and to evaluate their potential for wound healing applications. The influence of chitosan molecular weight and its content on the fibres characteristics was evaluated. To produce the fibres, the formation of polyelectrolyte complex hydrogels of both polymers was performed by the emulsion-gelation method. Hydrogels were converted in alcogels through a solvent exchange followed by drying with supercritical CO₂. Resulting aerogels were observed to be light-weight, fluffy mesoporous fibres with a specific surface area of 162-302 m²/g and specific pore volume of 1.41-2.49 cm³/g. Biocompatibility of the fibres was evaluated, and the result showed that they were non-cytotoxic. Bioactivity of the fibres regarding the ability to close a wound on an in vitro scale and antibacterial activity were also evaluated. Aerogel fibres presented percentages of recovered scratch area of about 75%, higher than the untreated control (~50%) and a clear antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The obtained results suggest that these alginate-chitosan aerogel fibres could be good candidates for wound healing applications.

Novel Mixed Matrix Sodium Alginate-Fullerenol Membranes: Development, Characterization, and Study in Pervaporation Dehydration of Isopropanol

Novel mixed matrix dense and supported membranes based on biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) modified by fullerenol were developed. Two kinds of SA–fullerenol membranes were investigated: untreated and cross-linked by immersing the dry membranes in 1.25 wt % calcium chloride (CaCl₂) in water for 10 min. The structural and physicochemical characteristics features of the SA–fullerenol composite were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic methods, scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and swelling experiments. Transport properties were evaluated in pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol in a wide concentration range. It was found that the developed supported cross-linked SA-5/PAN^CaCl2 membrane (modified by 5 wt % fullerenol) possessed the best transport properties (the highest permeation fluxes 0.64–2.9 kg/(m² h) and separation factors 26–73,326) for the pervaporation separation of the water–isopropanol mixture in the wide concentration range (12–90 wt % water) at 22 °C and is suitable for the promising application in industry.

Using Supercritical Fluid Technology as a Green Alternative During the Preparation of Drug Delivery Systems

Micro- and nano-carrier formulations have been developed as drug delivery systems for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that suffer from poor physico-chemical, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic properties. Encapsulating the APIs in such systems can help improve their stability by protecting them from harsh conditions such as light, oxygen, temperature, pH, enzymes, and others. Consequently, the API's dissolution rate and bioavailability are tremendously improved. Conventional techniques used in the production of these drug carrier formulations have several drawbacks, including thermal and chemical stability of the APIs, excessive use of organic solvents, high residual solvent levels, difficult particle size control and distributions, drug loading-related challenges, and time and energy consumption. This review illustrates how supercritical fluid (SCF) technologies can be superior in controlling the morphology of API particles and in the production of drug carriers due to SCF's non-toxic, inert, economical, and environmentally friendly properties. The SCF's advantages, benefits, and various preparation methods are discussed. Drug carrier formulations discussed in this review include microparticles, nanoparticles, polymeric membranes, aerogels, microporous foams, solid lipid nanoparticles, and liposomes.

Formation of Nanofibrous Structure in Biopolymer Aerogel during Supercritical CO2 Processing: The Case of Chitosan Aerogel

Supercritical drying is widely considered as the gold standard to produce aerogels that preserve the microstructure of the gels, but we have found this is not always the case. Chitosan aerogel, one of the emerging biopolymer aerogels, was prepared by chemical cross-linking gelation, followed by solvent exchange with methanol and supercritical drying using CO₂. Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis shows that the structure of the wet gel, which consists of Gaussian chains of individual molecular strands, converts into a nanofibrous network during CO₂ processing. In situ observation reveals a drastic shrinkage of the gel in CO₂, demonstrating that physical coagulation caused by the low affinity between chitosan and CO₂ is the main structure-forming step. These results challenge the common perception of supercritical drying: it is no longer an inactive drying method, but rather an active nanostructure forming a tool to produce porous biopolymer materials with tailored structure and properties.

Porous Starch Materials via Supercritical- and Freeze-Drying

The production of porous materials based on starch has been explored with supercritical drying—yielding aerogel—and freeze-drying. The two drying procedures were applied on the same gelling solution of amylomaize starch pasted at 140 °C and for two concentrations (5 and 10 wt.%). After gelation and retrogradation, water from the samples to be supercritically dried was exchanged to ethanol. The resulting starch aerogel presented high specific surface area (197 m²/g). Freeze-drying was assessed by investigating the effect of the gelation, retrogradation, freezing temperature, and sublimation pressure. The resulting starch materials were macroporous, with limited specific surface area and limited mechanical integrity. Cohesive open cell foam with pore size of ~20 µm was produced by quenching the hot starch melt in liquid nitrogen. The highest specific surface area obtained with freeze-drying was 7.7 m²/g for the hot starch melt frozen at −20 °C.

Acemannan Gels and Aerogels

The procedures to obtain two types of acemannan (AC) physical gels and their respective aerogels are reported. The gelation was induced by the diffusion of an alkali or a non-solvent, then supercritical CO₂ drying technology was used to remove the solvent out and generate the AC aerogels. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis indicated that alkali diffusion produced extensive AC deacetylation. Conversely, the non-solvent treatment did not affect the chemical structure of AC. Both types of gels showed syneresis and the drying process induced further volume reduction. Both aerogels were mesoporous nanostructured materials with pore sizes up to 6.4 nm and specific surface areas over 370 m²/g. The AC physical gels and aerogels enable numerous possibilities of applications, joining the unique features of these materials with the functional and bioactive properties of the AC.

Poly(Urethane-Acrylate) Aerogels via Radical Polymerization of Dendritic Urethane-Acrylate Monomers

The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of multifunctionality on material properties of synthetic polymer aerogels. For this purpose, we present the synthesis and characterization of monolithic dendritic-type urethane-acrylate monomers based on an aliphatic/flexible (Desmodur N3300), or an aromatic/rigid (Desmodur RE) triisocyanate core. The terminal acrylate groups (three at the tip of each of the three branches, nine in total) were polymerized with 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) via free radical chemistry. The resulting wet-gels were dried with supercritical fluid (SCF) CO₂. Aerogels were characterized with ATR-FTIR and solid-state 13C NMR. The porous network was probed with N₂-sorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal stability of aerogels was studied with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Most aerogels were macroporous materials (porosity > 80%), with high thermal stability (up to 300 °C). Aerogels were softer at low monomer concentrations and more rigid at higher concentrations. The material properties were compared with those of analogous aerogels bearing only one acrylate moiety at the tip of each branch and the same cores, and with those of analogous aerogels bearing norbornene instead of acrylate moieties. The nine-terminal acrylate-based monomers of this study caused rapid decrease of the solubility of the growing polymer and made possible aerogels with much smaller particles and much higher surface areas. For the first time, aliphatic/flexible triisocyanate-based materials could be made with similar properties in terms of particle size and surface areas to their aromatic/rigid analogues. Finally, it was found that with monomers with a high number of crosslinkable groups, material properties are determined by multifunctionality and thus aerogels based on 9-acrylate- and 9-norbornene-terminated monomers were similar. Materials with aromatic cores are carbonizable with satisfactory yields (20⁻30% w/w) to mostly microporous materials (BET surface areas: 640⁻740 m² g-1; micropore surface areas: 360⁻430 m² g-1).

Review on the Production of Polysaccharide Aerogel Particles

A detailed study of the production of polysaccharide aerogel (bio-aerogel) particles from lab to pilot scale is surveyed in this article. An introduction to various droplets techniques available in the market is given and compared with the lab scale production of droplets using pipettes and syringes. An overview of the mechanisms of gelation of polysaccharide solutions together with non-solvent induced phase separation option is then discussed in the view of making wet particles. The main steps of particle recovery and solvent exchange are briefly described in order to pass through the final drying process. Various drying processes are overviewed and the importance of supercritical drying is highlighted. In addition, we present the characterization techniques to analyse the morphology and properties of the aerogels. The case studies of bio-aerogel (agar, alginate, cellulose, chitin, κ-carrageenan, pectin and starch) particles are reviewed. Potential applications of polysaccharide aerogel particles are briefly given. Finally, the conclusions summarize the prospects of the potential scale-up methods for producing bio-aerogel particles.

Millimeter-Size Spherical Polyurea Aerogel Beads with Narrow Size Distribution

We report the room temperature synthesis of spherical millimeter-size polyurea (PUA) aerogel beads. Wet-gels of said beads were obtained by dripping a propylene carbonate solution of an aliphatic triisocyanate based on isocyanurate nodes into a mixture of ethylenediamine and heavy mineral oil. Drying the resulting wet spherical gels with supercritical fluid (SCF) CO₂ afforded spherical aerogel beads with a mean diameter of 2.7 mm, and a narrow size distribution (full width at half maximum: 0.4 mm). Spherical PUA aerogel beads had low density (0.166 ± 0.001 g cm⁻3), high porosity (87% v/v) and high surface area (197 m² g⁻1). IR, ¹H magic angle spinning (MAS) and 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR showed the characteristic peaks of urea and the isocyanurate ring. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the presence of a thin, yet porous skin on the surface of the beads with a different (denser) morphology than their interior. The synthetic method shown here is simple, cost-efficient and suitable for large-scale production of PUA aerogel beads.
