Abstract
Network analysis has become a crucial tool in genetic research, enabling the exploration of associations between genes and diseases. Its utility extends beyond genetics to include the assessment of environmental factors. Unipartite network analysis is commonly used in genomics to visualize initial insights and relationships among variables. Syndromic diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, are characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of various signs, symptoms, and clinicopathological features. Metabolic syndrome encompasses hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and dyslipidemia, and both genetic and environmental factors contribute to its development. Given that relevant data often consist of distinct sets of variables, a more intuitive visualization method is needed. This study applied multipartite network analysis as an effective method to understand the associations among genetic, environmental, and disease components in syndromic diseases. We considered three distinct variable sets: genetic factors, environmental factors, and disease components. The process involved projecting a tripartite network onto a two-mode bipartite network and then simplifying it into a one-mode network. This approach facilitated the visualization of relationships among factors across different sets and within individual sets. To transition from multipartite to unipartite networks, we suggest both sequential and concurrent projection methods. Data from the Korean Association Resource (KARE) project were utilized, including 352,228 SNPs from 8840 individuals, alongside information on environmental factors such as lifestyle, dietary, and socioeconomic factors. The single-SNP analysis step filtered SNPs, supplemented by reference SNPs reported in a genome-wide association study catalog. The resulting network patterns differed significantly by sex: demographic factors and fat intake were crucial for women, while alcohol consumption was central for men. Indirect relationships were identified through projected bipartite networks, revealing that SNPs such as rs4244457, rs2156552, and rs10899345 had lifestyle interactions on metabolic components. Our approach offers several advantages: it simplifies the visualization of complex relationships among different datasets, identifies environmental interactions, and provides insights into SNP clusters sharing common environmental factors and metabolic components. This framework provides a comprehensive approach to elucidate the mechanisms underlying complex diseases like metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study aims to identify the common patterns of multimorbidity and their distribution by age and gender. METHOD This cross-sectional study collected self-reported data from 42 785 Thai Cohort Study members through mailed questionnaires. Employing prevalence-based analysis, it identified common multimorbidity (coexistence of two or more chronic conditions) patterns, analysing the three most common patterns stratified by age and sex. P for trend (p-trend) was used to test the linear trend for associations between age and prevalence of these chronic conditions in the multimorbidity patterns. RESULTS Chronic conditions with the highest prevalence were related to metabolic syndromes: obesity (28.5%), hyperlipidaemia (13.2%) and hypertension (7.2%). A positive linear age-multimorbidity association was observed (p-trend = 0.0111). The 60+ participants averaged 1.20 diseases, with 33.7% multimorbidity prevalence. Hyperlipidaemia + obesity was most prevalent in the under-40 multimorbid group (38.7%). Men exhibited a higher prevalence of multimorbidity and associated patterns involving hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and obesity than women. CONCLUSION Metabolic syndrome components were the prominent factors driving multimorbidity. Significant age and gender differences were also revealed in multimorbidity prevalence. People aged 60+ faced high risk of multimorbidity, while younger individuals tended towards the multimorbidity pattern of obesity and hyperlipidaemia. Men were more susceptible to multimorbidity patterns associated with metabolic syndromes. Future studies for metabolic-related multimorbidity should consider these differences, addressing age and gender issues.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the characteristics of individuals transitioning from metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) to unhealthy obesity and the factors influencing the change. DESIGN This is a nationwide cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea. SAMPLE Individuals with obesity but metabolically healthy in 2009 and 2010 and those still obese 4 years later were selected. MEASUREMENTS Sociodemographic, physical, metabolic, and health behavior variables were collected, and logistic regression was used to find an association with the transition. RESULTS We analyzed 1,564,467 individuals, observing significant differences in all variables and the transition from MHO to unhealthy obesity. Among males, the transition was associated with smoking and drinking positively and physical activity negatively. Among females, drinking demonstrated a negative correlation. Regardless of age, regular exercise was negatively associated with the transition for all individuals. Except for older adults, all age groups showed a positive correlation with smoking and drinking. CONCLUSIONS Considering the significant factors in the transition, it is essential to develop and implement interventions varied by gender and age to delay and prevent the change in metabolic status. The necessity of developing interventions enables individuals to engage in regular exercise, regardless of age and gender.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, over 39% of individuals are obese. Metabolic syndrome, usually accompanied by obesity, is regarded as a major contributor to noncommunicable diseases. Given this relationship, the concepts of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity, considering metabolic status, have been evolving. Attention is being directed to metabolically healthy people with obesity who have relatively low transition rates to noncommunicable diseases. As obesity rates continue to rise and unhealthy behaviors prevail among young adults, there is a growing need for obesity management that considers these metabolic statuses. A nomogram can be used as an effective tool to predict the risk of transitioning to metabolically unhealthy obesity from a metabolically healthy status. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to identify demographic factors, health behaviors, and 5 metabolic statuses related to the transition from metabolically healthy obesity to unhealthy obesity among people aged between 20 and 44 years and to develop a screening tool to predict this transition. METHODS This secondary analysis study used national health data from the National Health Insurance System in South Korea. We analyzed the customized data using SAS (SAS Institute Inc) and conducted logistic regression to identify factors related to the transition from metabolically healthy to unhealthy obesity. A nomogram was developed to predict the transition using the identified factors. RESULTS Among 3,351,989 people, there was a significant association between the transition from metabolically healthy to unhealthy obesity and general characteristics, health behaviors, and metabolic components. Male participants showed a 1.30 higher odds ratio for transitioning to metabolically unhealthy obesity than female participants, and people in the lowest economic status were also at risk for the transition (odds ratio 1.08, 95% CI 1.05-1.1). Smoking status, consuming >30 g of alcohol, and insufficient regular exercise were negatively associated with the transition. Each relevant variable was assigned a point value. When the nomogram total points reached 295, the shift from metabolically healthy to unhealthy obesity had a prediction rate of >50%. CONCLUSIONS This study identified key factors for young adults transitioning from healthy to unhealthy obesity, creating a predictive nomogram. This nomogram, including triglycerides, waist circumference, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose, allows easy assessment of obesity risk even for the general population. This tool simplifies predictions amid rising obesity rates and interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases include a large group of pathologies and constitute one of the most serious chronic health problems facing the 21st century, with high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Unhealthy diets influence the development of these pathologies. The Mediterranean diet can be an important part in the treatment of these diseases. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of a program that aims to increase adherence to the Mediterranean diet on the improvement of different cardiometabolic risk parameters. METHODS A prospective intervention study was carried out on 7034 Spanish workers. Prior to the intervention, 22 cardiometabolic risk scales were evaluated. Participants in this study were informed both orally and in writing of the characteristics and benefits of the Mediterranean diet and were given the website of the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare of Spain, which provides advice on nutrition. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was reinforced by sending a monthly SMS to their mobile phones. After six months of follow-up, the 22 risk scales were re-evaluated to assess changes. Means and standard deviations were calculated using Student's t test to analyse quantitative variables. Prevalence was calculated using the Chi-square test when the variables were qualitative. RESULTS All the cardiometabolic risk scales studied decreased after implementing a program to improve and enhance adherence to the Mediterranean diet. The number of losses in the sample was very low, standing at 4.31%. CONCLUSIONS The Mediterranean diet is effective in reducing all cardiovascular risk scales evaluated. The mean values and prevalence of high values of the different cardiometabolic risk scales analysed led to lower values after the implementation of the program to increase adherence to the Mediterranean diet. We observed a significant positive difference in metabolic age in both sexes. We have obtained a significant improvement in the insulin resistance index, especially in the SPISE-IR index, data that we have not found in previous publications. Easy access to the Internet and new information and communication technologies facilitate adherence to a diet and can reduce the number of losses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), a standard treatment for prostate cancer (PC), causes many physical side effects. In particular, it causes metabolic changes such as fasting glucose abnormalities or accumulation of body fat, and its continuation can lead to metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is closely related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to maintain and practice a healthy lifestyle in patients with PC. OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led mobile-based program that aims to promote a healthy lifestyle in patients with PC undergoing ADT with MetS risk factors. METHODS This was a single-blind, randomized, waitlist control interventional study. A total of 48 patients were randomly assigned to the experimental and waitlist control groups at the urology cancer clinic of a tertiary general hospital in South Korea. The inclusion criteria were patients who had undergone ADT for >6 months, had at least 1 of the 5 MetS components in the abnormal range, and could access a mobile-based education program. The experimental group attended a 4-week mobile-based program on exercise and diet that included counseling and encouragement to maintain a healthy lifestyle, whereas the control group was placed on a waitlist and received usual care during the follow-up period, followed by the intervention. The primary outcome was a change in the lifestyle score. The secondary outcomes were changes in 5 MetS components, body composition, and health-related quality of life. The outcomes were measured at 6 weeks and 12 weeks after the initiation of the intervention. Each participant was assigned to each group in a sequential order of enrollment in a 4×4 permuted block design randomization table generated in the SAS (SAS Institute) statistical program. A linear mixed model was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS A total of 24 participants were randomly assigned to each group; however, 2 participants in the experimental group dropped out for personal reasons before starting the intervention. Finally, 46 participants were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. The experimental group showed more positive changes in the healthy lifestyle score (β=29.23; P≤.001), level of each MetS component (fasting blood sugar: β=-12.0; P=.05 and abdominal circumference: β=-2.49; P=.049), body composition (body weight: β=-1.52; P<.001 and BMI: β=-0.55; P<.001), and the urinary irritative and obstructive domain of health-related quality of life (β=14.63; P<.001) over time than the waitlist control group. CONCLUSIONS Lifestyle changes through nurse-led education can improve level of each MetS components, body composition, and ADT side effects. Nurses can induce positive changes in patients' lifestyles and improve the self-management of patients starting ADT through this program. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the effect of meal-type food for diabetes on improving metabolic syndrome risk factors in adults. METHODS The participants were adult men and women aged 40-55 y with 1 or more risk factors for metabolic syndrome. They were provided with a diabetic diet (a meal-type food) and general diet in the form of home meal replacement for 3 wk. The current research used a crossover design. All participants had iso-caloric meal replacement per day, and there was a 2-wk washout period between each diet. The nutritional standards of a diabetic diet were based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, which are: <50% carbohydrates, <10% sugars, <7% saturated fat, and >10 g dietary fiber. The average caloric content was 489.1 ± 45.0 kcal. The composition of the general diet was similar to that of the diabetic diet; however, there were differences in sugar content. In total, 15 participants were included in the research, and there was no significant difference between the 2 groups in terms of nutrient intake during the intervention period. RESULTS Body weight (P = 0.001), body mass index (P = 0.004), waist circumference (P = 0.030), triacylglycerol (P = 0.002), total cholesterol (P = 0.001), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.008) levels were significantly lower in the diabetic diet intervention period than before and after 3 wk of the intervention. In addition, reduction in body weight (P = 0.001), body mass index (P = 0.006), waist circumference (P = 0.032), and triacylglycerol (P = 0.036) and total cholesterol (P = 0.007) levels in the diabetic diet intervention period significantly differed compared with those in the general diet intervention period. CONCLUSIONS Replacing 1 meal per day with meal-type food for diabetes improved body composition and blood lipid levels in adults with metabolic syndrome risk factors.

Abstract
Postprandial insulin secretion has been associated with metabolic disorders such as hyperlipidemia and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationship between dietary insulin indices and dietary pattern with the risk of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). The participants of the present cross-sectional study were included among the individuals who participated in the Hoveyzeh Cohort Study (HCS). A total of 3905 Iranian adults, aged 35-70 years, are included in the current analysis. The Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) is used to calculate the dietary Insulin Index (DII), Insulin Load (DIL), and dietary pattern. Dietary pattern was derived using Reduced-Rank Regression (RRR) based on intake of protein (g/day), fiber (g/day), fat (g/day), magnesium (mg/day), and dietary insulin index were considered as response variables. The Generalized Linear Model was used to obtain the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for MetS based on gender, while considering quartiles of DIL, DII scores, and dietary pattern, adjusted for potential confounders. The mean ± SD of age and BMI of the participants in the top quartile of DIL were 45.72 ± 8.05 years and 28.25 ± 5.02 kg/m2, respectively. The mean ± SD of DII was 40.53 ± 4.06 and the mean ± SD of DIL was 117,986.1 ± 30,714.06. A significant positive association was observed between DIL and MetS in women after adjusting for confounding factors (OR: 1.51; 95% CI 1.16; 1.96). No significant association was seen between DIL, DII, and MetS among men. A derived dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of fruits, sugar, sweet deserts, Whole Grains, and dairy was associated with an increased risk of MetS in adjusted model2 among women (OR: 1.41; 95% CI 1.13; 1.75) and men in the same model (OR: 2.09; 95% CI 1.35; 3.21).However, the final model was significant just for men (OR: 2.08; 95% CI 1.35; 3.21) and not for women (OR: 1.24; 95% CI 0.96; 1.60). Our findings showed that adherence to a diet with a high insulin load can increase the risk of MetS in women. In addition, a derived dietary pattern by RRR indicated that a diet rich in fruits, sugar, sweet deserts, whole Grains, and dairy is related to increased risk of MetS in both men and women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Aim: To determine the relationship between body composition and hormonal levels in young men with metabolic syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and Methods: 123 males with a mean age of 24.1 ± 4.3 years (33 with metabolic syndrome (MS group) and 90 healthy physically active men (control group) were recruited at the study of body composition and hormone status. The total testosterone, cortisol, and insulin in blood serum by ELISA, the body weight (kg), lean body mass (kg) and fat mass (kg, %) by bioimpedance analysis method were investigated. RESULTS Results: It was establish the significand difference the mean value of body composition (body weight, lean body weight, fat body mass (kg, %), testosterone, cortisol insulin, and glucose concentration between MS group and control group. CONCLUSION Conclusions: A present study established the significant correlation of testosterone, insulin, and glucose concentration with fat body mass in all participants (MS and control groups). The negativee effect of overweight (BMI > 25; FBM > 18 %) and obesity (BMI > 30; FBM > 25 %) for testosterone concentration was determined due to an increase of FBM > 20 % and insulin increasing > 9,0 μlU/l.

Abstract
Determining the factors that contribute to making a reliable prediction of the metabolic syndrome will provide a deeper understanding of the medical indices involved in the prediction and assist in early diagnosis and treatment of patients. The study examined the optimal number of National cholesterol education program adult treatment panel (NCEP ATP) III indices needed to make a reliable prediction of the syndrome, whether each of the five NCEP ATP III indices for predicting the syndrome is equally important and whether a reliable prediction can be made using calculated blood pressure indices - estimated mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure - instead of NCEP ATP III blood pressure indices. The results show that NCEP ATP III indices for determination of the syndrome are not equally important. Moreover, the indices importance and their prediction quality vary according to gender. Optimal results are obtained by using all five NCEP ATP III indices for prediction.

Abstract
Background: We aimed to systematically examine literature on the prevalence of known modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors for premature coronary heart disease (PCHD) in women compared with men. Materials and Methods: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched. Review protocol is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020173216). Quality was assessed using the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute tool. Review Manager 5.3 was used for meta-analysis. Effect sizes were expressed as odds ratio (OR) and mean differences/standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for categorical and continuous variables. Results: In this PCHD cohort (age <65 years), the mean age of presentation in women was 3 years older than men. Women had higher total cholesterol (SMD 0.11; 95% CI 0.00 to 0.23) and higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (SMD 0.49; 95% CI 0.29 to 0.69). Women were more likely to have hypertension (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.42 to 1.60), diabetes mellitus (OR 1.78, 95% CI 1.55 to 2.04), obesity (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.24 to 1.42), metabolic syndrome (OR 3.73, 95% CI 1.60 to 8.69), stroke (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.51 to 1.77), peripheral vascular disorder (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.43 to 1.96), and depression (OR 2.29, 95% CI 1.96 to 2.67). Women were less likely to be smokers (OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.55 to 0.66), have reported alcohol intake (OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.33 to 0.40), and reported use of illicit drug (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.16 to 0.62). Conclusions: Risk factor profile in PCHD has a clear sex difference that supports early, aggressive, holistic, but sex-specific, approach to prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND HIV increases the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This risk maybe even higher in adult survivors of perinatal HIV infection because of prolonged exposure to HIV and its treatments. Nutritional deprivation in early life may further increase CVD risk. SETTING Botswana-Baylor Children's Clinical Centre of Excellence, Gaborone. METHODS This study examined dyslipidemia in 18- to 24-year olds with perinatally-acquired HIV with and without linear growth retardation ("stunting"). Anthropometry and lipid profiles were measured following a minimum 8-hour fast. Stunting was defined by a height-for-age z-score of <2 SDs below the mean. Dyslipidemia was defined by non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) of ≥130 mg/dL, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) of ≥100 mg/dL, or HDL of <40 mg/dL for male subjects and <50 mg/dL for female subjects. We used logistic regression to determine whether dyslipidemia was associated with stunting while adjusting for demographic and HIV treatment variables. RESULTS Of 107 young adults (46 males; 61 females) enrolled, 36 (33.6%) were stunted. Prevalence of dyslipidemia was 11.2%, 24.3%, and 65.4% for high non-HDL-C, high LDL-C, and low HDL-C, respectively. In univariable analysis, being stunted was associated with elevated LDL-C (odds ratio [OR], 2.52; 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.02 to 6.25) but not with elevated non-HDL-C (OR = 2.17; 95% CI: = 0.65 to 7.28) or with low HDL-C (OR = 0.75; 95% CI: = 0.33 to 1.73). The association between stunting and elevated LDL-C (OR = 4.40; 95% CI: = 1.49 to 12.98) remained significant after controlling for measured confounders. CONCLUSION Dyslipidemia was common among perinatally HIV-infected youth and those with evidence of early nutritional deprivation who were more likely to have elevated LDL-C.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by complex metabolic changes involving a cluster of co-occurring conditions, such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high fasting plasma glucose, high serum triglycerides, and high LDL cholesterol levels or low HDL cholesterol levels. The incidence and risk factors of MetS occurrence increase every year. It is estimated that MetS affects approximately 30% of the population of some countries. Therefore, novel strategies are being studied to reduce the negative impact of having an unbalanced diet and a lack of physical activity. One of these strategies is the administration of probiotic microorganisms, such as the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, which has been associated with several beneficial health effects (including modulation of the intestinal microbiota and improvement of the inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory profiles). Thus, the objective of this study was to review the risk factors of MetS occurrence and the beneficial effects of S. boulardii ingestion in the treatment of MetS. Here, we critically evaluate the treatment necessary to promote these benefits. Using the pre-established inclusion criteria, eight studies were reviewed, including five animal and three human studies. The results reported the regulation of the lipid profile, modulation of the intestinal microbiota and gene expression, and a decrease in mass gain as positive results when S. boulardii was administered. Although more experiments are needed to validate these results, especially using human models, there is a trend toward improvement in MetS and a reduction in its risk factors with the administration of S. boulardii.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Metabolic syndrome (MetS), i.e. the cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors comprising visceral obesity, impaired glucose metabolism, arterial hypertension and atherogenic dyslipidemia, is prevalent globally and exacts a heavy toll on health care expenditures. AREAS COVERED The pathophenotypes of individual traits of the MetS in adults are discussed first, with strong emphasis on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sex differences. Next, I discuss recent studies on phenotypic and outcome heterogeneity of the MetS, highlighting the role of NAFLD, sex, reproductive status, and depressive disorders. In the second half of the article, the therapeutic implications of the variable MetS types and features are analyzed, focusing on the most recent developments, and guidelines. EXPERT OPINION I have identified physiological, pathological, social and medical sources of phenotypical heterogeneity in the MetS and its constitutive traits. Improved understanding of these variables may be utilized in the setting of future precision medicine approaches in the field of metabolic disorders and target organ damage.

Abstract
Background As the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, obesity and diabetes increase worldwide, the need to identify modifiable lifestyle risk factors also increases, especially those that may be relatively unique to a specific population. To explore a possible association between betel quid chewing and metabolic syndrome, a community-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Methodology Three hundred ninety-one (391) adults were interviewed and the following parameters were measured: triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, glucose, waist circumference, body mass index and blood pressure. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the association between betel quid chewing and metabolic syndrome while controlling for confounders. Results The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was similar in chewers and non-chewers, 50% and 49%, respectively. After controlling for other factors, development of metabolic syndrome was positively associated with number of betel quids chewed per day, age greater than 40 years, and a positive family history of hypertension and diabetes. Regarding the duration of betel chewing, when analyzed by sex, the risk was doubled in men compared to non-chewers (OR 2.15; 95% CI = 1.21, 3.84). As a result, a man chewing more than 10 pieces (OR 2.49; 95% CI = 1.36, 4.57) of betel quids per day for more than 10 years had a two-fold increased chance of developing the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions Frequency and duration of betel quid chewing may represent a behavioral lifestyle target for approaches to reduce the incidence of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
We examined effects of exposing female and male mice for 33 weeks to 45% or 60% high fat diet (HFD). Males fed with either diet were more vulnerable than females, displaying higher and faster increase in body weight and more elevated cholesterol and liver enzymes levels. Higher glucose metabolism was revealed by PET in the olfactory bulbs of both sexes. However, males also displayed altered anterior cortex and cerebellum metabolism, accompanied by a more prominent brain inflammation relative to females. Although both sexes displayed reduced transcripts of neuronal and synaptic genes in anterior cortex, only males had decreased protein levels of AMPA and NMDA receptors. Oppositely, to anterior cortex, cerebellum of HFD-exposed mice displayed hypometabolism and transcriptional up-regulation of neuronal and synaptic genes. These results indicate that male brain is more susceptible to metabolic changes induced by HFD and that the anterior cortex versus cerebellum display inverse susceptibility to HFD.

Abstract
This record study aimed to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) profiles regarding sex, age, and obesity for the riskier factor of cardiovascular diseases in a general population in Saudi Arabia. Laboratory and anthropometric measurements were performed on non-specific participants with variant ages and BMI in either sex. Serobiochemical changes were measured for metabolic profiles, i.e., A1C/FSG, TC, TGC, HDLC/LDLC, Vit.D, TSH/T4, Hb, and Cr. The study was applied in a Polyclinic, Abha, Saudi Arabia in 2020 G. The general population showed variable incidences of MetS profiles, such as 69.4% diabetes, 85.5% hypothyroidism, and 92.2% obesity. Hypothyroidism showed a higher incidence in women rather than in men, but men were more dyslipidemic, with higher TGC and LDLC but low HDLC, compared to women. Men <40 Y. showed diabetes and hypothyroidism, but elders were dyslipidemic. Women <40 Y. showed anemia and hypovitaminosis-D but were suffering from hypothyroidism at all ages. Diabetes, hypothyroidism, hypovitaminosis-D, and dyslipidemia were the main MetS components in both overweight and obese participants, and an incidence of more than 50% in each profile was recorded. Diabetes with hypertension was characteristic of obese participants rather than those overweight. About 66.1% of the mixed-hypercholesterolemic cases were diabetic, but 18.9% of the mixed-diabetic participants were hypercholesterolemic. Castelli's risk factors, CRI-I and CRI-II, and atherogenic indices, AIP and AC, were measured for evaluating the cardiac risk in different populations based on the AUC-ROC and cut-off values. Insulin-resistance marker (TyG) was also measured, showing considerable cut-off values for diabetic susceptibility in the lipidemic participants with higher TGC and TC rather than HDLC or LDLC. In conclusion, MetS showed higher susceptibility to sex and age with increased incidence in women rather than men. However, the cardiac risk was more susceptible to men of higher TGC and low HDLC than women. Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was more prominent in both elders (≥40 Y.) than younger ages of either sex. Anemia and deficiency of Vit. D was characteristic of young women (<40 Y.). Hypothyroidism affects young men <40 Y. but was recorded in women of all ages. Both dyslipidemia and diabetes could trigger CVD, showing higher cardiac risk in mixed-hypercholesterolemic men rather than women. Our study strongly suggests that the consumption of unhealthy junk food, tobacco smoking, lack of exercise, and physical inactivity could be conclusive evidence of MetS in the Saudi population.

Abstract
These days, it is not common for people to have time to do physical activities regularly because of their own work. So, they perform physical activities all at once, which is often called the "weekend warrior". Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association of the "weekend warrior" and other physical activity patterns with metabolic syndrome. Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used, and 27,788 participants were included. The participants were divided into inactive, weekend warriors, and regularly active based on physical activity patterns. The risk of metabolic syndrome in each group was analyzed using multiple logistic regression. The inactive and weekend warrior groups showed a higher likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome than the regularly active groups (weekend warrior: odds ratio (OR) 1.29, confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.65; inactive: OR 1.38, CI 1.25-1.53). According to the physical activity patterns, the weekend warrior group showed a dose-response relationship compared to the regularly active group (only moderate: OR 1.85, CI 1.25-2.72; only vigorous: OR 1.41, CI 0.93-2.14; both: OR 0.84, CI 0.56-1.27). This study found increasing the amount of physical activity and performing vigorous-intensity physical activity helped manage metabolic syndrome in the weekend warrior group.

Abstract
Metabolic Syndrome is a clustering of obesity, hyperglycemia/insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. We aimed to determine the incidence of metabolic syndrome among Royal Thai Army (RTA) personnel and its risk factors. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from 2017 to 2021. Metabolic syndrome was defined by NCEP ATP III (2005 Revision). A total of 98,264 participants were enrolled in the present study. The overall incidence rate of metabolic syndrome was 3.7 per 100 person-year (95% CI 3.7–3.8). The statistically significant risk factors for metabolic syndrome included male sex (aHR 1.40; 95% CI 1.29–1.51), age > 35 years, current alcohol consumption, and no exercise. When stratified by sex, the incidence rate of metabolic syndrome among participants aged ≥ 45 years was higher than those aged < 35 years with aHR 6.34; 95% CI 6.01–6.70 for males and aHR 9.59; 95% CI 7.55–12.19 for females. Our data demonstrated that metabolic syndrome is a common health issue, especially among RTA personnel over 35 years. Alcohol consumption and sedentary behavior played an essential role in facilitating metabolic syndrome in this study population and are potential targets for intervention to enhance primary prevention of the sequelae of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
What is already known about this topic? Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the most easily available health indicative markers for cardiovascular diseases, and it has become a major public health problem worldwide due to increasing urbanization and aging populations. The prevalence of MetS increased dramatically in China, however, there are no records of MetS defined by the 2017 Chinese Diabetes Society for Beijing by far. What is added by this report? In this study, the data of 24,412 participants aged 18-74 years from a large population-based study in Beijing was collected. The overall prevalence of MetS among Beijing residents was 24.5%. The prevalence was 35.2% in males and 15.4% in females. What are the implications for public health practice? Effective public health strategies should target males, people with older age, lower education, higher body mass index, smokers, those who drink alcohol, those who are unemployed or retired, and those who live in rural areas on MetS prevention and control.

Abstract
Excessive alcohol consumption, as part of an unhealthy lifestyle, can contribute to metabolic abnormalities. This study investigated the sex differences in the relationship between excessive drinking and the risk of metabolic abnormalities. This community-based study included 3387 participants (age range: 30–103 years, mean age ± SD: 57 ± 13.5 years, 38.2% males) from the northeastern region of Taiwan. All participants completed a demographic survey and were subjected to blood tests. The risks of excessive drinking were evaluated using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). The results showed that males were at higher risks of obesity, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia, but at a lower risk of abdominal obesity than females. Males with hazardous drinking were at greater risks of hypertension, hyperglycemia, low serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and hypertriglyceridemia compared to those with no drinking. Females with hazardous drinking were at a greater risk of hypertension than those with no drinking. There was no interaction effect of sex and excessive drinking on the risks of metabolic abnormalities after controlling for demographics and lifestyle-related habits. Future studies are warranted to explore the sex-specific risk factors for metabolic abnormalities and to elucidate the mechanism underlying this association between alcohol consumption and metabolic abnormalities.

Abstract
Accumulative evidence indicates that meal timing is associated with cardiometabolic risks by deteriorating circadian rhythms. However, evidence is unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relation between nightly fasting duration, meal timing and frequency and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Iranian adults. Eight hundred fifty adults were recruited in this study. Dietary data were collected by 24-h dietary recalls. Time-related eating patterns were determined as nightly fasting duration, occasions of eating, time and energy proportion of first and last meal and meal frequency on a day. The MetS was recognised on the basis of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. A binary logistic regression was applied to examine the relation between meal timing and MetS. A significant inverse relation between habitual nightly fasting duration with MetS (OR = 0·74, 95 % CI 0·55, 0·99, P = 0·04) and 'increased TAG' (OR = 0·73, 95 % CI 0·55, 0·98, P = 0·03) was found after confounder adjustment. Also, habitual first and last meal energy had no significant connection with MetS. However, the odds of 'increased fasting blood glucose' were lower in subjects who consumed ≥25% of habitual energy intake in the last meal (OR = 0·60, 95 % CI 0·42, 0·85, P = 0·005). Having longer nightly fasting duration may be useful for decreasing the risk of both MetS and 'elevated TAG'. These findings introduce a new insight that time-related eating patterns, instead of nightly fasting duration alone, might be related to cardiometabolic risks in Iranian adults.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to investigate differences in lifestyle factors and prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the Indonesian population between 2013 and 2018. In addition, we investigated whether adherence to the 2015-released national healthy lifestyle guideline (‘GERMAS’) is associated with MetS in different sex, age, urban/rural, and BMI categories. We performed cross-sectional analyses in individuals aged >15 of the 2013 (n = 34,274) and 2018 (n = 33,786) Indonesian National Health Surveys. A stratified, multi-stage, systematic random sampling design and the probability proportional to size method were used to select households in the 34 provinces across the country. MetS was defined according to the Joint Interim Statement Criteria, and adherence to ‘GERMAS’ guideline was defined as fulfilling the national healthy lifestyle recommendations of ≥150 min/week physical activity (PA), ≥5 portions/day fruit and vegetable (FV), no smoking (NS), and no alcohol consumption (NA). We examined the associations of each lifestyle factor with MetS using logistic regression categorised by sex, age groups, urban/rural, and BMI, and adjusted for sociodemographic factors. We observed that men who adhered to the guideline had lower odds ratio of MetS [OR(95%CI) associated with PA: 0.85(0.75–0.97); NA: 0.75(0.56–1.00)] than non-adherent men. Middle-aged adults who adhered to the guideline had lower OR of MetS [PA: 0.85(0.72–1.01); FV: 0.78(0.62–0.99); NA: 0.66(0.46–0.93)] than non-adherent adults <45 years. The adherent urban population had lower OR of MetS [FV: 0.85(0.67–1.07); NA: 0.74(0.52–1.07)] than the non-adherent urban population. Those with overweight or obesity who adhered to the guideline had relatively lower odds of MetS than those who did not. In conclusion, in this nationally representative study, adherence to the ‘GERMAS’ guideline may confer cardiometabolic health benefits to several groups of the Indonesian population, particularly men, middle-aged, those with overweight and obesity, and potentially urban population.

Abstract
Background Beyond the degree of adiposity, the pattern of fat distribution has a profound influence on cardiometabolic risk. It is unclear if sex differences in body fat distribution can potentially explain any sex differences in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and in individual cardiometabolic risk factors among obese men and women. Methods In this cross-sectional analysis, 432 persons from the ongoing Obesity Weight Reduction Study (n = 356 obese, ØBMI 41 ± 8 kg/m2, and 76 non-obese, ØBMI 25 ± 3 kg/m2), were included. The relations of sex to MetS prevalence and selected cardiometabolic risk factors were assessed using univariate and multivariate adjusted regression models. Results In crude analyses, %fat mass and the fat mass/lean mass ratio were significantly higher in women than in men, regardless of increasing obesity categories, from normal weight to grade-3-obesity. In contrast, markers of abdominal obesity, such as waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio were higher in men than in women, despite similar BMI. The prevalence of the MetS was higher in obese men than in women (67.6 vs. 45.0%, p < 0.0001), particularly in younger individuals < 40 years (72.5 vs. 36.8%, p < 0.0001), but “metabolically healthy obesity” (BMI ≥ 30, no other NCEP ATPIII MetS component) was more common in women than in men (15.6 vs. 4.1%, p < 0.0001). After adjusting for age, %body fat and height, sex differences were observed for HDL-cholesterol (p < 0.001), triglycerides (p < 0.001), fasting glucose (p = 0.002), insulin and HOMA-IR levels (p < 0.001), ALAT (p < 0.001), adiponectin (p < 0.001), and sE-selectin (p = 0.005). In contrast, crude sex differences in other variables, such as leptin levels (68 ± 4 in obese women vs. 33 ± 2 µg/L in men, p < 0.0001), disappeared after accounting for differences in %body fat (least-squares means of leptin: 52 ± 4 vs. 55 ± 6 µg /L, p = 0.740). A logistic regression model adjusting for age and lifestyle factors revealed a lower risk of having MetS for women as compared to men (OR = 0.38[0.22–0.60]). That risk estimate did not materially alter after adding BMI to the model. In contrast, no statistically significant association between sex and MetS prevalence was observed after adding waist circumference and adiponectin to the model (OR = 1.41[0.59–3.36]). Conclusions Different body fat distribution patterns, particularly abdominal adiposity, adiponectin, and related biomarkers, may contribute to sex differences in cardiometabolic risk factors and to the prevalence of the MetS. Abstract
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors among the Korean population requires effective health surveillance and examination of the effects of preventative behaviors. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the relationships between the clustering of MetS and MVPA in a large sample of 36,987 Koreans ranging from 20 to 80 years of age. This study recruited a total of 36,987 adults (23,813 males and 13,174 females). All participants were assessed for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) using the Korean version short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The International Diabetes Federation and the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for blood pressure, hyperglycemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and high triglycerides (TG) defined MetS. Waist circumference (WC) was determined by Asian-Pacific region populations. According to the 150-minute MVPA, there were differences in MetS risk factors in young adult males, and only three factors (WC, HDL-C, and TG) were different males in ≥ 70 years old. In females, there was a difference in MetS risk factors in the elderly, and only three factors (WC, blood pressure, and TG) were different females in ≤ 29 years old. The males who did not met the recommended MVPA had a 1.16 to 3.14 -times increase in the MetS risk factors. The females who did not met the recommended MVPA had a 1.18 to 2.57 -times increase in the MetS risk factors. Our study provides evidence that Korean adults who do not engage in recommended MVPA levels increase the odds ratio for each of the MetS risk factors when compared to those who meet the recommendations.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between insomnia and metabolic syndrome among Taiwanese older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled participants aged over 60 years from outpatient clinics between July and September 2018. Demographic characteristics of all participants and questionnaire data for sleep duration, use of hypnotic agents, baseline activities of daily living, 5 items of the geriatric depression scale, comorbidities, medications, and risk of obstructive sleep apnea were obtained. Insomnia was defined by scores of questionnaires of the Chinese version of the Athens Insomnia Scale higher or equal to 6 points. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. Multivariable forward stepwise logistic regression analysis was applied to investigate independent associations between insomnia and metabolic syndrome before and after stratifying by gender. RESULTS Among the 336 participants (mean age 74.9 ± 8.5 years, female 49.1%), 63.1% participants had metabolic syndrome, with significantly higher prevalence among females than males (males 56.7%; females 69.7%). Participants with metabolic syndrome had higher rates of insomnia (34.0% vs. 21.8%, P = 0.018). The significant associations between insomnia and metabolic syndrome disappeared after adjusting for all covariates. However, insomnia was independently associated with metabolic syndrome in older females (adjusted OR 2.614, 95% CI 1.011-6.763, P = 0.048) after adjusting for all covariates. CONCLUSIONS Insomnia is significantly associated with metabolic syndrome among older female adults. These findings suggest that gender may play a role in the pathogenesis of insomnia and metabolic syndrome in older adults.

Abstract
Background: Little is known regarding the role of eating quickly, physical inactivity, and poor cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in assessing the onset of metabolic syndrome (Mets) in Korean young adults. Objectives: This study examined the association between the three risk factors and Mets in 1891 Korean university students (30% female) aged 18–29 years. Methods: Eating speed (slow vs. fast) and physical activity (active vs. inactive) were assessed with a standardized questionnaire. Maximal oxygen uptake as an indicator of CRF was assessed with graded exercise testing. Components of Mets were waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC). Results: All the three exposures were positively associated with abdominal obesity, elevated blood pressures, elevated FBG, elevated TG, and decreased HDLC. Logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio (OR) of Mets was incremental in the order of physical inactivity (odds ratio, OR = 1.666; 95% confidence interval, CI = 1.024–2.708; p = 0.040), fast eating (OR = 1.687; 95% CI = 1.094–2.601; p = 0.018), and poor CRF (OR = 5.378; 95% CI = 3.475–8.325; p < 0.001). Conclusions: The current findings suggest that a multifaceted intervention targeting at promotion of physical activity and CRF in concert with healthy eating behaviors should be implemented as a preventive strategy against Mets in Korean university students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fatigue, a painful and unpleasant subjective experience, is common in perimenopausal women. Therefore, an effective tool to evaluate the fatigue-precipitating factor is important for perimenopausal women prone to fatigue syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was surveyed by short-term perimenopausal fatigue scale. The enrollment period was from November 2019 to January 2020. The subjects were perimenopausal women prone to perimenopausal fatigue. The differences between the fatigue-precipitating factors and the degrees of fatigue and disturbance were determined by one-way ANOVA and t test. RESULTS A total of 220 perimenopausal women with mean age of 51.3 years were included. Among these, 64.1% did not have a habit of regular exercise and 55.5% had chronic diseases. Fatigue syndrome was found in 64.1% of subjects, who were mainly presented by shoulder and neck pain and sleep problems. There were significant differences between "perimenopausal fatigue" and "duration" (p < 0.001); "with and without regular exercise" (p = 0.05); and "with and without chronic diseases" (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed the perimenopausal fatigue syndrome is more frequently found in perimenopausal women who have a co-morbidity (chronic illness) and do not have a habit of regular exercise. An early identification and prompt intervention may help perimenopausal women to deal with their fatigue syndrome. The short questionnaire perimenopausal fatigue scale seems to be useful for screening perimenopausal women prone to fatigue syndrome.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations among obesity-related indices and MetS in diabetic patients, and explore sex differences in these associations. Methods: Patients with type 2 DM were included from two hospitals in southern Taiwan. The Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for an Asian population were used to define MetS. In addition, the following obesity-related indices were evaluated: waist-to-height ratio, waist-hip ratio (WHR), conicity index (CI), body mass index (BMI), body roundness index, body adiposity index, lipid accumulation product (LAP), abdominal volume index, visceral adiposity index (VAI), abdominal volume index and triglyceride-glucose index. Results: A total of 1,872 patients with type 2 DM (mean age 64.0 ± 11.3 years, 808 males and 1,064 females) were enrolled. The prevalence rates of MetS were 59.8% and 76.4% in the males and female (p < 0.001), respectively. All of the obesity-related indices were associated with MetS in both sex (all p < 0.001). LAP and BMI had the greatest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves in both sex. In addition, the interactions between BMI and sex (p = 0.036), WHR and sex (p = 0.016), and CI and sex (p = 0.026) on MetS were statistically significant. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study demonstrated significant relationships between obesity-related indices and MetS among patients with type 2 DM. LAP and VAI were powerful predictors in both sex. The associations of BMI, WHR and CI on MetS were more significant in the men than in the women.
