Plantago asiatica L. Seed Extract Improves Lipid Accumulation and Hyperglycemia in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice

Plantaginis semen ameliorates diabetic kidney disease via targeting the sphingosine kinase 1/sphingosine-1-phosphate pathway

Plantaginis Semen (PS) is widely utilized as a common herb in several Asian countries, particularly China, due to its diuretic, anti-hypertensive, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anti-hyperglycemic properties. Furthermore, it is acknowledged for its ability to mitigate renal complications associated with metabolic syndrome. Despite its extensive usage, there is limited systematic literature elucidating its therapeutic mechanisms, thus emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive investigations in this field.

AIM

This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the therapeutical potential of PS in treating diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms through in vivo and in vitro models.

METHODS

The main composition of PS were characterized using the UPLC-QTOF-MS method. For the in vivo investigation, a mouse model mediated by streptozocin (STZ) associated with a high-fat diet (HFD) and unilateral renal excision was established. The mice were split into 6 groups (n = 8): control group (CON group), DKD group, low-dose of Plantago asiatica L. seed extract group (PASE-L group, 3 g/kg/d), medium-dose of PASE group (PASE-M, 6 g/kg/d), high-dose of PASE group (PASE-H, 9 g/kg/d), and positive drug group (valsartan, VAS group, 12 mg/kg/d). After 8 weeks of treatment, the damage induced by DKD was evaluated by using relevant parameters of urine and blood. Furthermore, indicators of inflammation and factors associated with the SphK1-S1P signaling pathway were investigated. For the in vitro study, the cell line HBZY-1 was stimulated by high glucose (HG), they were then co-cultured with different concentrations of PASE, and the corresponding associated inflammatory and sphingosine kinase 1/sphingosine-1-phosphate (SphK1-S1P) factors were examined.

RESULTS

A total of 59 major components in PS were identified, including flavonoids, iridoids, phenylethanol glycosides, guanidine derivatives, and fatty acids. In the mouse model, PS was found to significantly improve body weight, decrease fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, increased glucose tolerance and insulin tolerance, improved kidney-related markers compared to the DKD group, pathological changes in the kidneys also improved dramatically. These effects showed a dose-dependent relationship, with higher PASE concentrations yielding significantly better outcomes than lower concentrations. However, the effects of the low PASE concentration were not evident for some indicators. In the cellular model, the high dose of PASE suppressed high glucose (HG) stimulated renal mesangial cell proliferation, suppressed inflammatory factors and NF-κB, and decreased the levels of fibrillin-1(FN-1) and collagen IV(ColIV).

CONCLUSION

Our results indicate that PS exerts favorable therapeutic effects on DKD, with the possible mechanisms including the inhibition of inflammatory pathways, suppression of mRNA levels and protein expressions of SphK1 and S1P, consequently leading to reduced overexpression of FN-1 and ColIV, thereby warranting further exploration.

Plantaginis Semen Ameliorates Hyperuricemia Induced by Potassium Oxonate

Plantaginis semen is the dried ripe seed of Plantago asiatica L. or Plantago depressa Willd., which has a long history in alleviating hyperuricemia (HUA) and chronic kidney diseases. While the major chemical ingredients and mechanism remained to be illustrated. Therefore, this work aimed to elucidate the chemicals and working mechanisms of PS for HUA. UPLC-QE-Orbitrap-MS was applied to identify the main components of PS in vitro and in vivo. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was conducted to explore the gene expression profile, and the genes involved were further confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). A total of 39 components were identified from PS, and 13 of them were detected in the rat serum after treating the rat with PS. The kidney tissue injury and serum uric acid (UA), xanthine oxidase (XOD), and cytokine levels were reversed by PS. Meanwhile, renal urate anion transporter 1 (Urat1) and glucose transporter 9 (Glut9) levels were reversed with PS treatment. RNA-seq analysis showed that the PPAR signaling pathway; glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism signaling pathway; and fatty acid metabolism signaling pathway were significantly modified by PS treatment. Further, the gene expression of Slc7a8, Pck1, Mgll, and Bhmt were significantly elevated, and Fkbp5 was downregulated, consistent with RNA-seq results. The PPAR signaling pathway involved Pparα, Pparγ, Lpl, Plin5, Atgl, and Hsl were elevated by PS treatment. URAT1 and PPARα proteins levels were confirmed by Western blotting. In conclusion, this study elucidates the chemical profile and working mechanisms of PS for prevention and therapy of HUA and provides a promising traditional Chinese medicine agency for HUA prophylaxis.

Research progress of treating hyperuricemia in rats and mice with traditional Chinese medicine

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a common chronic metabolic disease caused by abnormal purine metabolism and uric acid excretion. Despite extensive research on HUA, no clear treatment has been found so far. Improving purine metabolism and promoting uric acid excretion is crucial for the effective treatment of HUA. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions have shown good effects in treating HUA. This article summarizes the latest progress in treating HUA in rats and mice using traditional Chinese medicine and prescriptions, elaborates on the pathogenesis of HUA, explores the application of commonly used traditional Chinese medicine treatment methods and prescriptions, and discusses the previous pharmacological mechanisms. In general, our research indicates that traditional Chinese medicine can effectively relieve the symptoms related to elevated uric acid levels in HUA rats and mice. However, further exploration and research are needed to verify its efficacy, safety, and feasibility.

Comparative pharmacokinetics of six bioactive components of Shen-Wu-Yi-Shen tablets in normal and chronic renal failure rats based on UPLC-TSQ-MS/MS

Shen-Wu-Yi-Shen tablets (SWYST), a Chinese patent medicine consisting of 12 herbal medicines, was formulated by a famous TCM nephrologist, Zou Yunxiang. It is clinically used to improve the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, dry mouth and throat, and dry stool in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) accompanied by qi and yin deficiency, dampness, and turbidity. SWYST can reduce urea nitrogen, blood creatinine, and urinary protein loss, and increase the endogenous creatinine clearance rate. However, little is known about its pharmacokinetics.

AIM OF STUDY

To compare the pharmacokinetics of six bioactive components after oral administration of SWYST in normal and adenine-induced CRF rats.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A method based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a triple-stage quadrupole mass spectrometer (UPLC-TSQ-MS/MS) was developed and validated to determine the six bioactive compounds (albiflorin, paeoniflorin, plantagoguanidinic acid, rhein, aloe-emodin, and emodin) in rat plasma. Rat plasma samples were prepared using protein precipitation. Chromatography was performed on an Agilent Eclipse Plus C18 column (3.0 × 50 mm, 1.8 μm) using gradient elution with a mobile phase composed of acetonitrile and water containing 0.1% (v/v) formic acid, while detection was achieved by electrospray ionization MS under the multiple selective reaction monitoring modes. After SWYST administration, rat plasma was collected at different time points, and the pharmacokinetic parameters of six analytes were calculated and analyzed based on the measured plasma concentrations.

RESULTS

The UPLC-TSQ-MS/MS method was fully validated for its satisfactory linearity (r ≥ 0.9913), good precisions (RSD <11.5%), and accuracy (RE: -13.4∼13.1%), as well as acceptable limits in the extraction recoveries, matrix effects, and stability (RSD <15%). In normal rats, the six analytes were rapidly absorbed (Tmax ≤ 2 h), and approximately 80% of their total exposure was eliminated within 10 h. Moreover, in normal rats, the AUC0-t and Cmax of albiflorin, plantagoguanidinic acid, and rhein exhibited linear pharmacokinetics within the dose ranges, while that of paeoniflorin is non-linear. However, in CRF rats, the six analytes exhibited reduced elimination and significantly different AUC or Cmax values. These changes may reflect a decreased renal clearance rate or inhibition of drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters in the liver and gastrointestinal tract caused by CRF.

CONCLUSIONS

A sensitive UPLC-TSQ-MS/MS method was validated and used to investigate the pharmacokinetics of SWYST in normal and CRF rats. This is the first study to investigate the pharmacokinetics of SWYST, and our findings elucidate the causes of their different pharmacokinetic behaviors in CRF rats. Furthermore, the results provide useful information to guide further research on the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic correlation and clinical application of SWYST.

A Plantaginis Semen-Coptidis Rhizoma compound alleviates type 2 diabetic mellitus in mice via modulating AGEs-RAGE pathway

Plantaginis Semen-Coptidis Rhizoma Compound(CQC) was first recorded in Shengji Zonglu. Clinical and experimental studies have reported that both of Plantaginis Semen and Coptidis Rhizoma exerted the effects of lowering blood glocose and lipid. However, the potential mechanism of CQC on type 2 diabetes (T2DM) remain unclear.

AIM OF THE STUDY

The main objective of our investigation was to explore the mechanisms of CQC on T2DM based on network pharmacology and experimental research.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Streptozotocin(STZ)/high fat diet(HFD)-induced T2DM models in mice were established to evaluate the antidiabetic effect of CQC in vivo. We obtained the chemical constituents of Plantago and Coptidis from the TCMSP database and literature sources. Potential targets of CQC were gleaned from the Swiss-Target-Prediction database, and T2DM targets were obtained from Drug-Bank, TTD, and DisGeNet. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed in the String database. The David database was used for gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses. We then verified the potential mechanism of CQC that were predicted by network pharmacological analysis in STZ/HFD-induced T2DM mouse model.

RESULTS

Our experiments confirmed that CQC improved hyperglycemia and liver injury. We identified 21 components and gleaned 177 targets for CQC treatment of T2DM. The core component-target network included 13 compounds and 66 targets. We further demonstrated that CQC improve T2DM through various pathways, especially the AGEs/RAGE signal pathway.

CONCLUSION

Our results indicated that CQC could improve the metabolic disorders of T2DM and it is a promising TCM compound for the treatment of T2DM. The potential mechanism may probably involve the regulation of the AGEs/RAGE signaling pathway.

Study on the therapeutic effect and mechanism of Tangningtongluo Tablet on diabetic mice

AIMS

To investigate the therapeutic effects of Tangningtongluo Tablet on diabetic mice and its mechanism. This study was established the scientific basis for the clinical application of Tangningtongluo Tablet in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and provided data supporting the transformation of Tangningtongluo Tablet from an in-hospital preparation to a new Chinese medicine.

METHODS

In this study, a diabetic mouse model was established by high-glucose and high-fat diet feeding in combination with STZ injection for 4 weeks. Glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, liver histomorphological changes and liver function related indexes were detected, pancreatic histomorphological changes and insulin resistance related indexes were observed, and the expression of pathway related proteins and inflammatory factors were examined.

RESULTS

Glycemia and glycated hemoglobin were reduced in diabetic mice after the treatment of Tangningtongluo Tablet, and glucose tolerance and lipid results were modified. The insulin resistance status of the mice was diminished and tissue damage to the pancreas and liver was repaired. Expression of ERS/NF-κB related pathway proteins was reduced in liver tissues, and inflammatory factors such as TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β were reduced in serum.

CONCLUSIONS

Tangningtongluo Tablet could reduce blood glucose in diabetic mice, regulate the disorder of lipid metabolism, enhance insulin sensitivity, improve insulin resistance, repair pancreatic tissue damage and protect mouse liver in diabetic mice. The mechanism of action might be related to the regulation of ERS/NF-κB signaling pathway and the reduction of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β production.

Study on herb-herb interaction between active components of Plantago asiatica L. seed and Coptis chinensis Franch. rhizoma based on transporters using UHPLC-MS/MS

The combined efficacy in lowering serum lipid levels and increasing kidney protection of Plantago asiatica L. seed (Plantago) and Coptis chinensis Franch. rhizoma (Coptis) is far better than the effects of either herb alone. This finding suggests that there must be some degree of herb-herb interactions (HHI) affect potency. Here, we chose geniposidic acid (GPA), acteoside (ACT), and plantagoamidinic acid A (PLA) as active components in Plantago, and berberine (BBR) as the active component in Coptis, and, using transporter gene-transfected Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells in combination with specific substrates and inhibitors, investigated Plantago- Coptis HHIs. We also established a UPLC-MS/MS analytical method to determine substrate content. Results showed that PLA in Plantago was a substrate of rOCT1/2 and rMATE1, and had inhibitory effects on rOCT2 and rMATE1. We also found that ACT is a substrate of rMATE1, but GPA was not a substrate of any transporter that we investigated. When BBR was used as the substrate, the inhibition rate of 10 μM PLA was 53.6% on rOCT2 and 31.5% on rMATE1. The inhibition rates of 30 μM ACT and 30 μM GPA on rMATE1 were 47.0% and 31.0%, respectively. Thus, our findings suggest that GPA, ACT, PLA, and BBR have competitive interactions that are driven by the rOCT2 and rMATE1 transporters. These interactions affect the transport and excretion of compounds and result in efficacy changes after co-administration.

Phytochemicals, Biological Activities, Molecular Mechanisms, and Future Prospects of Plantago asiatica L

Plantago asiatica L. has been used as a vegetable and nutritious food in Asia for thousands of years. According to recent phytochemical and pharmacological research, the active compositions of the plant contribute to various health benefits, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer. This article reviews the 87 components of the plant and their structures, as well as their biological activities and molecular research progress, in detail. This review provides valuable reference material for further study, production, and application of P. asiatica, as well as its components in functional foods and therapeutic agents.

Method Development and Validation for Simultaneous Analysis of Eleven Components for Quality Control of Geumgwesingihwan Using HPLC–DAD and UPLC–MS/MS

Geumgwesingihwan (GGSGH) is an oriental herbal formula made by adding Achyranthes bidentate Blume and Plantago asiatica L. to Yukmijiwhanghwan. It has been used for the treatment of edema since ancient times. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a method for simultaneous quantification of 11 components: gallic acid (1), 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (2), geniposidic acid (3), morroniside (4), loganin (5), paeoniflorin (6), acteoside (7), cornuside (8), benzoic acid (9), benzoylpaeoniflorin (10), and paeonol (11), using high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC–DAD) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS). Compounds 1–11 were separated on a Capcell Pak UG 80 C18 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) using a mobile phase of a distilled water–acetonitrile system, both containing 0.1% formic acid. In UPLC–MS/MS, compounds 1–11 were separated on an Acquity UPLC BEH C18 column (100 mm × 2.1 mm, 1.7 µm) using a mobile phase of a distilled water–acetonitrile system containing 1.0% acetic acid. Using these methods, samples of GGSGH were determined to contain 0.13–2.87 mg/g (HPLC–DAD) and not detected–4.60 mg/g (UPLC–MS/MS) of compounds 1–11. The developed HPLC–DAD assays for simultaneous determination of all analytes were validated with respect to linearity, limits of detection and quantification, recovery, and precision. The established HPLC assay will be used to obtain basic data for quality evaluation of GGSGH and related oriental herbal formulas.

Human liver microsomes study on the inhibitory effect of plantainoside D on the activity of cytochrome P450 activity

BACKGROUND

Plantainoside D is widely existed in the herbs and possesses various pharmacological activities, making it possible to co-administrate with other herbs. Its effect on cytochrome P450 enzymes (P450) is a risk factor for inducing adverse drug-drug interactions. To assess the effect of plantainoside D on the activity of major P450 isoenzymes in human liver microsomes.

METHODS

The Cocktail method was conducted in human liver microsomes in the presence of probe substrates. The activity of P450 isoenzymes was evaluated by the production of corresponding metabolites. The concentration-dependent and time-dependent inhibition assays were performed in the presence of 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 μM plantainoside D to characterize the inhibitory effect of plantainoside D.

RESULTS

Significant inhibition was observed in the activity of CYP1A2, 2D6, and 3A, which was concentration-dependent with the IC₅₀ values of 12.83, 8.39, and 14.66 μM, respectively. The non-competitive manner and competitive manner were observed in the CYP3A inhibition (Ki = 7.16 μM) and CYP1A2 (Ki = 6.26 μM) and 2D6 inhibition (Ki = 4.54 μM), respectively. Additionally, the inhibition of CYP3A was found to be time-dependent with the KI of 1.28 μM^-1 and K_inact of 0.039 min^-1.

CONCLUSIONS

Weak inhibitory effects of plantainoside D on the activity of CYP1A2, 2D6, and 3A were revealed in vitro, implying its potential of inducing interactions with CYP1A2-, 2D6-, and 3A-metabolized drugs. Although further in vivo validations are needed, the feasibility of the Cocktail method in evaluating P450 activity has been verified.

Hua-Tan-Sheng-Jing Decoction Treats Obesity With Oligoasthenozoospermia by Up-Regulating the PI3K-AKT and Down-Regulating the JNK MAPK Signaling Pathways: At the Crossroad of Obesity and Oligoasthenozoospermia

Background: Oligoasthenozoospermia is the leading cause of male infertility, seriously affecting men's health and increasing the societal medical burden. In recent years, obesity-related oligoasthenozoospermia has attracted increased attention from researchers to find a cure. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Hua-Tan-Sheng-Jing decoction (HTSJD) in treating obesity with oligoasthenozoospermia, determine its active ingredients and identify its mechanism of action. Methods: The ingredients of HTSJD were determined by combining the ultra-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and systems pharmacology approach. The common pathogenesis of obesity and oligoasthenozoospermia and the potential mechanism of HTSJD against obesity with oligoasthenozoospermia were obtained through target fishing, network construction, and enrichment analyses. Further, molecular docking of the key ingredients with the upstream receptors of the key signaling pathways of the potential mechanism was used to predict their affinity. Finally, high-fat-induced obesity with oligoasthenozoospermia rat model was constructed to determine the effects of HTSJD on semen concentration, sperm motility, body weight, and serum lipid metabolism. The key proteins were validated by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: A total of 70 effective components and 847 potential targets of HTSJD (H targets) were identified, of which 743 were common targets related to obesity and oligoasthenozoospermia (O-O targets) mainly enriched in the pathways related to inflammation, oxidative stress and hormone regulation. Finally, 143 common targets (H-O-O targets) for HTSJD against obesity with oligoasthenozoospermia were obtained. Combining the hub genes and the results of Gene Ontology (GO) functional and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis of H-O-O targets, PI3K-AKT and MAPK signaling pathways were identified as the key pathways. Molecular docking results showed that Diosgenin, Kaempferol, Quercetin, Hederagenin, Isorhamnetin may act on the related pathways by docking EGFR, IGF1R and INSR. The animal-based in vivo experiments confirmed that HTSJD improves the sperm quality of high-fat diet-fed rats by reducing their body weight and blood lipid levels, influencing the PI3K-AKT and MAPK signaling pathways and altering the corresponding protein expressions. Conclusion: HTSJD treats obesity with oligoasthenozoospermia by up-regulating the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway and down-regulating the MAPK signaling pathway, which are at the crossroad of obesity and oligoasthenozoospermia.

The protective effects of Aster yomena (Kitam.) Honda on high-fat diet-induced obese C57BL/6J mice

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

Aster yomena (Kitam.) Honda (AY) has remarkable bioactivities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-cancer activities. On the other hand, the effects of AY against obesity-induced insulin resistance have not been reported. Therefore, this study examined the potential of AY against obesity-associated insulin resistance in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice.

MATERIALS/METHODS

An obesity model was established by feeding C57BL/6J mice a 60% HFD for 16 weeks. The C57BL6/When ethyl acetate fraction from AY (EFAY) at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg/day was administered orally to mice fed a HFD for the last 4 weeks. Normal and control groups were administered water orally. The body weight and fasting blood glucose were measured every week. Dietary intake was measured every other day. After dissection, blood and tissues were collected from the mice.

RESULTS

The administration of EFAY reduced body and organ weights significantly compared to HFD-fed control mice. The EFAY-administered groups also improved the serum lipid profile by decreasing the triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein compared to the control group. In addition, EFAY ameliorated the insulin resistance-related metabolic dysfunctions, including the fasting blood glucose and serum insulin level, compared to the HFD-fed control mice. The EFAY inhibited lipid synthesis and insulin resistance by down-regulation of hepatic fatty acid synthase and up-regulation of the AMP-activated protein kinase pathway. EFAY also reduced lipid peroxidation in the liver, indicating that EFAY protected hepatic injury induced by obesity.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that EFAY improved obesity-associated insulin resistance by regulating the lipid and glucose metabolism, suggesting that AY could be used as a functional food to prevent obesity and insulin resistance.

Spiky titanium dioxide nanoparticles-loaded Plantaginis Semen polysaccharide as an adjuvant to enhance immune responses

The purpose of this study was to prepare spiky titanium dioxide nanoparticles-loaded Plantaginis Semen polysaccharide (SN-TiO₂-PSP), and the structural characterization and immune response of infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) vaccine in Hetian chickens were investigated. The structural characterization of SN-TiO₂-PSP was analyzed by FT-IR, TEM, and TGA analysis. And the immune organs indexes, lymphocytes proliferation, specific antibody levels, and ratios of CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T lymphocytes were studied. Structural characterization results showed that SN-TiO₂-PSP has a typical polysaccharide absorption peak and good stability. The SN-TiO₂-PSP's shape was similar to sea urchin, and its zeta potential and particle size were 27.56 mV and 976.11 nm, respectively. In vivo results showed that SN-TiO₂-PSP could enhance the proliferation of peripheral lymphocytes, specific antibody levels, CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T lymphocytes ratios, IL-4 and INF-γ levels in Hetian chickens vaccinated with ILT vaccine on D₇, D₁₄, D₂₁, and D₂₈. In addition, SN-TiO₂-PSP not only enhanced the indexes of immune organs but also promoted the development of immune organs. Therefore, SN-TiO₂-PSP has immune adjuvant activity and may become a new potential immune adjuvant.

Complete genome sequence of Plantago asiatica virus A, a novel putative member of the genus Polerovirus

Here, we report the complete genome sequence of a novel polerovirus, "Plantago asiatica virus A" (PlaVA), detected in Plantago asiatica using high-throughput RNA sequencing and validated by Sanger sequencing. The complete PlaVA genome contains 5,881 nucleotides and has seven open reading frames (ORF0-5 and ORF3a) encoding putative proteins (P0-5 and P3a, respectively) in an arrangement that is similar to that of typical Polerovirus members. Pairwise sequence comparisons revealed that P0 to P5 encoded by PlaVA had the highest sequence identity (25.48%-79.21%) to the corresponding proteins of previously reported poleroviruses. A phylogenetic analysis using the PlaVA P1-2 and P3 amino acid sequences and those of members of the family Solemoviridae (formerly Luteoviridae) indicated that although PlaVA belongs to the genus Polerovirus, it does not represent a known species. Consequently, PlaVA should be considered a member of a new species within the genus Polerovirus.

Lipidomics study of the therapeutic mechanism of Plantaginis Semen in potassium oxonate-induced hyperuricemia rat

BACKGROUND

Plantaginis Semen has been widely used as folk medicine and health care food against hyperuricemia (HUA) and gout, but its pharmacological mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated the therapeutic mechanism of Plantaginis Semen extract on potassium oxonate -induced HUA rats based on a lipidomics approach.

METHODS

A model of HUA was established by potassium oxonate intragastric administration. 42 Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats were randomly divided into the control group, model group, benzbromarone group (10 mg/kg) and three Plantaginis Semen groups (n = 7). The Plantaginis Semen groups were treated orally with Plantaginis Semen, 0.9375, 1.875  or 3.75 g/kg for 28 days. The levels of serum uric acid (UA), creatinine (Cr), triacylglycerol (TG) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were  measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Ultra performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS) was used for the serum lipidomics analysis, multivariate statistical analysis and independent samples t-test were carried out for the pattern recognition and characteristic metabolites identification. The relative levels of critical regulatory factors were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR).

RESULTS

Compared with the model group, the levels of serum UA, Cr, TG and TNF-α were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in benzbromarone and three Plantaginis Semen groups. With lipidomics analysis, significant lipid metabolic perturbations were observed in HUA rats, 13 metabolites were identified as potential biomarkers and glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway was  most affected. These perturbations  were partially restored via treatment of benzbromarone and Plantaginis Semen. Additionally, the mRNA expression levels of urate anion transporter 1 (URAT1) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinases B (PI3K/Akt) were significantly decreased (p < 0.01) after treatment with benzbromarone and high dose of Plantaginis Semen.

CONCLUSIONS

Plantaginis Semen had significant effects on anti-HUA, anti-inflammatory and renal protection. It attenuated potassium oxonate-induced HUA through regulation of lipid metabolism disorder.

The composition of Australian Plantago seeds highlights their potential as nutritionally-rich functional food ingredients

When wetted, Plantago seeds become covered with a polysaccharide-rich gel called mucilage that has value as a food additive and bulking dietary fibre. Industrially, the dry husk layer that becomes mucilage, called psyllium, is milled off Plantago ovata seeds, the only commercial-relevant Plantago species, while the residual inner seed tissues are either used for low value animal feed or discarded. We suggest that this practice is potentially wasting a highly nutritious resource and here describe the use of histological, physicochemical, and chromatographic analyses to compare whole seed composition/characteristics of P. ovata with 11 relatives already adapted to harsh Australian conditions that may represent novel commercial crop options. We show that substantial interspecific differences in mucilage yield and macromolecular properties are mainly a consequence of differences in heteroxylan and pectin composition and probably represent wide differences in hydrocolloid functionality that can be exploited in industry. We also show that non-mucilage producing inner seed tissues contain a substantial mannan-rich endosperm, high in fermentable sugars, protein, and fats. Whole seed Plantago flour, particularly from some species obtained from harsh Australian environments, may provide improved economic and health benefits compared to purified P. ovata psyllium husk, by retaining the functionality of the seed mucilage and providing additional essential nutrients.

miRNA-22 deletion limits white adipose expansion and activates brown fat to attenuate high-fat diet-induced fat mass accumulation

BACKGROUND

Obesity, characterized by excessive expansion of white adipose tissue (WAT), is associated with numerous metabolic complications. Conversely, brown adipose tissue (BAT) and beige fat are thermogenic tissues that protect mice against obesity and related metabolic disorders. We recently reported that deletion of miR-22 enhances energy expenditure and attenuates WAT expansion in response to a high-fat diet (HFD). However, the molecular mechanisms involved in these effects mediated by miR-22 loss are unclear.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Here, we show that miR-22 expression is induced during white, beige, and brown adipocyte differentiation in vitro. Deletion of miR-22 reduced white adipocyte differentiation in vitro. Loss of miR-22 prevented HFD-induced expression of adipogenic/lipogenic markers and adipocyte hypertrophy in murine WAT. In addition, deletion of miR-22 protected mice against HFD-induced mitochondrial dysfunction in WAT and BAT. Loss of miR-22 induced WAT browning. Gain- and loss-of-function studies revealed that miR-22 did not affect brown adipogenesis in vitro. Interestingly, miR-22 KO mice fed a HFD displayed increased expression of genes involved in thermogenesis and adrenergic signaling in BAT when compared to WT mice fed the same diet.

CONCLUSIONS

Collectively, our findings suggest that loss of miR-22 attenuates fat accumulation in response to a HFD by reducing white adipocyte differentiation and increasing BAT activity, reinforcing miR-22 as a potential therapeutic target for obesity-related disorders.

The effect of Plantago major supplementation on leptin and VEGF-A serum levels, endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis in obese women - a randomised trial

Obesity is associated with increased serum leptin level, endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis. In vitro studies have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) synthesis is increased by leptin. Animal studies revealed the effectiveness of Plantago supplementation treatment of obesity. The study aim was to evaluate the effect of Plantago major supplementation on serum leptin and VEGF blood concentration, endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis in obese women. Seventy-two obese women received oral Plantago major supplement (Plantago group, n = 35) or placebo (placebo group, n = 37) for 12 weeks. At baseline and after completion, anthropometric and body composition measurements were performed, and blood samples were collected. Serum concentrations of leptin, VEGF-A, adiponectin, tumour necrosis factor α and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule have been determined. At completion, the leptin level was higher in the Plantago group (39 781.55 ± 20 360.73 pg ml-1) compared to both the baseline (36 138.71 ± 25 401.51 pg ml-1) and placebo group (30 502.81 ± 19 003.18 pg ml-1). Also, leptin concentration in the Plantago group at completion correlated positively with an increase in VEGF-A level (R = 0.45), and baseline VEGF-A level correlated negatively with the increase in leptin concentration (R = -0.47). Plantago major supplementation increases leptin serum level, enhances leptin influence on VEGF-A serum level increase and by this mechanism may intensify endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis in obese women.

Associations Between Using Chinese Herbal Medicine and Long-Term Outcome Among Pre-dialysis Diabetic Nephropathy Patients: A Retrospective Population-Based Cohort Study

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a worldwide burden due to the high co-morbidity and mortality. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the leading causes of CKD, and pre-dialysis is one of the most critical stages before the end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Although Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) use is not uncommon, the feasibility of using CHM among pre-dialysis DN patients remains unclear.

Materials and methods: We analyzed a population-based cohort, retrieved from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, to study the long-term outcome of using CHM among incident pre-dialysis DN patients from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2007. All patients were followed up to 5 years or the occurrence of mortality. The risks of all-cause mortality and ESRD were carried out using Kaplan-Meier and competing risk estimation, respectively. Further, we demonstrated the CHM prescriptions and core CHMs using the Chinese herbal medicine network (CMN) analysis.

Results: A total of 6,648 incident pre-dialysis DN patients were analyzed, including 877 CHM users and 5,771 CHM nonusers. With overlap weighing for balancing all accessible covariates between CHM users and nonusers, we found the use of CHM was associated with lower all-cause mortality (0.22 versus 0.56; log-rank test: p-value <0.001), and the risk of mortality was 0.42 (95% CI: 0.36–0.49; p-value <0.001) by adjusting all accessible covariates. Further, the use of CHM was associated with a lower risk of ESRD (cause-specific hazard ratio: 0.59, 95%CI: 0.55–0.63; p-value <0.001). Also, from the 5,901 CHM prescriptions, we found Ji-Sheng-Shen-Qi-Wan, Astragalus mongholicus Bunge or (Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge.), Plantago asiatica L. (or Plantago depressa Willd.), Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, and Rheum palmatum L. (or Rheum tanguticum (Maxim. ex Regel) Balf., Rheum officinale Baill.) were used as core CHMs for different CHM indications. Use of core CHMs was associated with a lower risk of mortality than CHM users without using core CHMs.

Conclusions: The use of CHM seemed feasible among pre-dialysis DN patients; however, the beneficial effects still need to be validated by well-designed clinical trials.

Plantago media L.-Explored and Potential Applications of an Underutilized Plant

The search of valuable natural compounds should be directed towards alternative vegetal resources, and to the re-discovery of underutilized plants. Belonging to the Plantaginaceae family, the hoary plantain (Plantago media L.) represents one of the lesser studied species from the Plantago genus. The literature study revealed the under-utilization of the hoary plantain, a surprising aspect, considering its widespread. If the composition of Plantago media L. is rather well established, its applications are not nearly studied as for other Plantago species. The goal of the present paper is to summarize the findings regarding the applications of P. media, and, having as starting point the applications of related species, to propose new emerging areas of research, such as the biomedical applications validation through in vivo assays, and the evaluation of its potential towards industrial applications (i.e., development of food or personal care products), pisciculture or zootechny, phytoremediation and other environmental protection applications, or in the nanotechnology area (materials phytosynthesis). The present work constitutes not only a brief presentation of this plant's present and potential applications, but also an invitation to research groups world-wide to explore the available vegetal resources.

Response of plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) supplementation on nutritional, endo-parasitic, and endocrine status in lambs

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of plantain herb (Plantago lanceolata L.) supplementation on growth, plasma metabolites, liver enzymatic activity, hormonal status, gastrointestinal parasites, and carcass characteristics of lambs. A total of 24 lambs, aged 6 months weighing 8.0 ± 0.5 kg were randomly allocated to one of two dietary treatments: (1) CL diet-roadside grass and concentrate mixture; (2) PL diet-CL diet + 5% fresh plantain supplementation on a DM basis. The PL diet group exhibited 23% higher (P = 0.01) average daily gain and 15% improved (P = 0.03) feed conversion efficiency. Circulating cholesterol concentrations were suppressed by 9% (P = 0.03), and liver enzyme activity was improved by 5-25% (P < 0.05) in the lamb fed PL diet, compared with CL diet only. The inclusion of plantain in the diet was highly effective at suppressing the parasites, Paramphistomum spp. (P = 0.003) and coccidial parasites (P = 0.04), but not stomach worms. Moreover, plantain supplementation increased growth hormone and insulin concentrations in plasma level, whereas decreased carcass fat by 32.7%. Therefore, supplementation of the lambs' diet with plantain showed some beneficial effects on productivity and parasitic infection, while it led to a leaner carcass.

Comparison of main chemical composition of Plantago asiatica L. and P. depressa Willd. seed extracts and their anti-obesity effects in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

BACKGROUND

Nowadays, the pharmacological effects of Plantaginis semen was getting more and more attention because of the great effect of treating diuresis, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Plantaginis semen is the seed of Plantago asiatica L. or P. depressa Willd. This was verified by examining chemical composition differences in a preliminary experiment, predicting their differences in pharmacology.

PURPOSE

In this study, we aimed to compared the the differences in main components and anti-obesity effects of Plantago asiatica L. seed extract (PASE) and P. depressa Willd. seed extract (PDSE).

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS

The ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) analysis was used to characterize and compare the differences chemical constituents of PASE and PDSE. The difference therapeutic effects between PASE and PDSE on obesity and associated metabolic disorders was investigated by high-fat (HF) diet induced mice model.

RESULTS

The fingerprint of Plantaginis semen were established by screening and identified 15 main components, including iridoids, phenethanol glycosides, flavonoids, guanidines, and fatty acids. Pentahydroxy flavanone was observed only in PDSE but not in PASE. The quantitative analysis results indicated that the main bioactive components in PASE were geniposidic acid and acteoside; their concentrations were three times higher in PASE than in PDSE. In anti-obesity effects, the result show the levels of fasting blood glucose were improved in both PASE and PDSE when compared with the HF group, while the PASE is show a significant effect then the PDSE group and improved the glucose tolerance but not in PDSE. The results also displayed that the Plantaginis semen did not modify food intake or body weight but decreased abdominal white/brown adipocyte size, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), hepatic TG and TC, fecal TG and TC concentrations when compared with the HF group. Among these indicators, serum TG, liver TG, fecal TC and TG levels were significantly improved in PASE compared with PDSE. The results indicated that PASE treatment more effectively improved lipid and glucose metabolism in HF diet-induced obese mice than did PDSE.

CONCLUSION

As Plantaginis semen sources, P. asiatica L. seeds demonstrated more bioactive components and favorable metabolic disorder treatment outcomes than did P. depressa Willd. seeds.

An Ethnobotanical Study on Qīng-Căo-Chá Tea in Taiwan

Herbal tea, a beverage prepared from a variety of plant materials excluding the leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze of the family Theaceae, for a long time, has been consumed by most Chinese people for preventive and/or therapeutic health care. Usually, it is brewed or prepared as a decoction of local plants in water. The qīng-căo-chá tea, a commercial herbal tea, is the most common among many differently formulated herbal teas in Taiwan. For hundreds of years, qīng-căo-chá tea has played an important role in the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with the environmental conditions in Taiwan. However, research studies in this field have been insufficient. The raw material formulas of qīng-căo-chá tea have always been passed down from “masters” to “apprentices.” Hence, there is no systematic collation or record, and, therefore, there is a need to assess and confirm the composition, safety, and effectiveness of the raw materials. This study aimed to document the uses of Taiwan's qīng-căo-chá tea through a semi-structured interview survey and investigate the background of traditional practitioners, tea compositions, and plant origins and uses. This will improve our understanding of the knowledge inherited by the practitioners and the theoretical basis of the medicinal uses of these teas. In our field investigation, we visited 86 shops and assessed 71 raw ingredients of qīng-căo-chá tea. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to conduct the interviews. During the interviews, in addition to written records, audio and video recordings were made, and photographs were taken with the permission of the interviewees. The qīng-căo-chá raw materials have long been used as herbal teas, although more research should clarify their efficacy and safety. Traditional sellers of qīng-căo-chá tea were mainly males, and most shops have been in operation for more than 71 years. Some of the raw materials were derived from multiple sources, including different plants, and were often mixed without any safety concerns. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic ethnobotanical study on qīng-căo-chá tea that assesses and confirms its herbal ingredients. Our study represents a reference for herbal teas in Taiwan that can be used by the public and regulatory agencies.

Effect of herbal supplementation on growth, immunity, rumen histology, serum antioxidants and meat quality of sheep

There is a wide range of feed additives deliberately designed to be used in sheep diets that can improve production performance. Whereas herbal supplementation is gaining popularity not only for improving sheep productivity and mutton quality but also for safe application without any harmful residual effects. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) and/or garlic leaf (Allium sativum) dietary supplementation on growth performance, immunity, rumen histology, serum antioxidants and meat quality of sheep. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design with 32 one-year-old sheep (initial mean live weight 9 ± 0.2 kg) allocated to four groups (8 sheep per group). Rice straw and concentrates-based total mixed ration pellets (2390 kcal/kg DM, CP = 15.1%) were offered as a control diet (CL diet). Herbal treatment diets included (i) CL diet + 10 g DM of plantain herb (PL diet), (ii) CL diet + 10 g DM of garlic leaf (GL diet) and (iii) CL diet + 5 g DM of PL and 5 g DM of GL (PG diet). Compared with the CL diet group, the live weight gain and feed conversion ratio were 18% to 26% and 13% to 20% higher in herbal-supplemented groups, respectively. Moreover, the herbal-supplemented groups, especially the PL diet group had higher serum immunoglobulin concentration, antioxidant capacity and rumen papillae size compared to the control. Besides, the lowest caul fat and pelvic fat levels were observed in the PL diet group followed by PG, GL and CL diet groups. In addition, lower mutton ether extract and saturated fatty acid along with higher polyunsaturated fatty acid levels were found in all herbal-supplemented groups. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with PL and/or GL might be used as an alternative in sheep to promote growth, health status and lean mutton production.

Advanced Glycation End Products in Chinese Medicine Mediated Aging Diseases: A Review

Aging has become a worldwide problem. During this process, the incidence of related diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis increases dramatically. Studies within the most recent two decades suggest a pivotal role of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) in the aging process. This review aims to systemically summarize the effects and potential mechanism of Chinese Medicines on inhibiting AGEs-related aging diseases.

An integrative investigation on the efficacy of Plantaginis semen based on UPLC-QTOF-MS metabolomics approach in hyperlipidemic mice

Plantaginis semen, the dried mature seed of Plantago asiatica L. or Plantago deprdssa Willd., has a prominent effect on the treatment of obesity, type 2 diabetes and lipid disorders, however, its clinical application is limited due to inadequate in-depth mechanism exploration and incomplete discussion of action targets of its in vivo. Therefore, an untargeted metabolomics approach was firstly applied to study the serum metabolic differences in mice. Metabolomics analysis was performed using ultra performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) together with multivariate statistical data analysis. The results showed that Plantaginis semen can mainly improve blood lipids, some degree in blood glucose and insulin levels in high-fat mice, in addition, the phenotype of liver and fat stained sections demonstrated remarkable results. A total of 22 metabolites involved in arachidonic acid, glycerophospholipid, glycosphingolipid, linoleate, Omega-3 fatty acid, phosphatidylinositol phosphate and tyrosine metabolisms were identified. In further, it was found that the possible mechanisms of Plantaginis semen on hyperlipidemic mice lied in the biosynthesis of thyroxine, biological effects of enzymes of phospholipase A2 activity, glucosylceramide synthase and inositol essential enzyme 1α, genes expressions of fatty acid metabolism and inflammation. Serum metabolomics revealed that Plantaginis semen could cure the organism disease via regulating multiple metabolic pathways which will be helpful for understanding the mechanism of this herb and providing references for better applications of it in clinic, even researches on other TCMs.

Plantago asiatica Seed Extracts Alleviated Blood Pressure in Phase I⁻Spontaneous Hypertension Rats

Arterial pressure of each new breeding spontaneous Phase-1 hypertension (P1-HT) rat was recorded for 5 min by intravascular femoral artery catheter that served as a reference value prior to treatment. In the acute antihypertensive test, 0.36 g/kg Bwt of Plantago asiatica seed extract (PSE) was administered, via gavage feeding, to P1-HT rats, and the arterial pressures were continuously recorded for 1 h. The acute antihypertensive effects of PSE on P1-HT rats appeared within 15 min after PSE administration and lasted over 1 h with systolic pressure decreased 31.5 mmHg and diastolic pressure decreased 18.5 mmHg. The systolic pressure decreased 28 mmHg and diastolic pressure decreased 16 mmHg in P1-HT rats when simultaneously compared with verapamil hydrochloride (reference drug), whereas there were no significant differences in the pretreated reference values of acute PSE treatment and the untreated control. In the chronic test, P1-HT rats received 0.36 g/kg Bwt day of PSE or equal volume of water for 4 weeks via oral gavage, and the lower blood pressure tendencies of chronic PSE treatment were also found when compared with the controls. The antihypertensive values of PSE were also confirmed in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Oral administration with PSE can effectively moderate blood pressure within an hour, while taking PSE daily can control the severity of hypertension, suggesting PSE is a potentially antihypertensive herb.

Extract of Plantago asiatica L. Seeds Ameliorates Hypertension in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats by Inhibition of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme

Plantago asiatica L. seeds is a common folk medicine with a long history of medical use in China because of its antipyretic, diuretic, and expectorant properties. It has been applied to treat hypertension clinically due to its diuresis, however, its efficacy and mechanisms on anti-hypertension has not been reported yet to our knowledge. In this study, we investigated the antihypertensive effect and underlying mechanisms of P. asiatica L. seeds extract (PASE) in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Male SHRs were treated with 2.5 mg/kg of fosinopril (FOS) and 400 mg/kg of PASE orally per day for once or 12 weeks. SHR or Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) receiving vehicle (distilled water) was used as control. The results demonstrated systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures (SBP, DBP, and MBP) were significantly lowered after single and long-term intragastric administration of PASE. The cardiac and aortic index and collagen accumulation were improved in the PASE group compared with the SHRs group. Meanwhile, PASE treatment remarkably reduced urine total protein, the ratio of serum urea nitrogen to serum creatinine, and increased serum potassium. The levels of serum angiotensin I (Ang I), angiotensin II (Ang II), the ratio of Ang II to Ang I, and aldosterone (ALD) were lowered after treatment of PASE. Besides, PASE and its major active constituents of phenylethanoid glycosides, including isoacteoside, plantamajoside and acteoside, were found to effectively inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activation in vitro. These findings suggest that PASE has the antihypertensive effect that may involve a mechanism of ACE inhibition and simultaneously protect organ damage against hypertension.

Renoprotective Effect of Plantago major Against Proteinuria and Apoptosis Induced by Adriamycin in Rat

Objective

Adriamycin (ADR) is an important anti-cancer drug which can cause renal toxicity. Given the known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Plantago major (P. major), the aim of this study was to determine the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of P. major on ADR- induced nephropathy in rats.

Methods

Fifty male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 5 groups including: control, ADR (5 mg/kg), ADR + P. major (600 and 1200 mg/kg) and P. major (1200 mg/kg). The animals were treated with P. major extract for 5 consecutive weeks and ADR was intravenously injected on the 7th day of the study. Urine and serum samples were collected on days 0, 14, 21, 28, and 35 for the measurement of serum cholesterol and albumin levels and urine protein excretion rate. At the end of the study, the left kidneys were removed for apoptosis assessment.

Results

Administration of ADR significantly decreased serum albumin level and increased serum cholesterol and urine protein excretion rate as well as, apoptotic cell numbers compared to the control group (P < 0.001) while had no effect on glomerular filtration rate (P > 0.05). Treatment with P. major, in both 600 and 1200 mg/kg doses, increased serum albumin level and decreased serum cholesterol concentration, urine protein excretion rate and as well as the number of apoptotic cell compared to the ADR group (P < 0.001).

Conclusion

Our results showed that the P. major extract effectively protects against ADR- induced nephropathy by reducing kidney apoptosis and improving renal functioning in rats.

Ojayeonjonghwan, an oriental medicine composed of five seeds, protects against vasomotor and neurological disorders in estrogen-deficient rats

IMPACT STATEMENT

Menopausal symptoms impair the quality of life of many women, and although conventional treatments are often effective, their use is limited by adverse effects. Ojayeonjonghwan, OJa, is a traditional Oriental medicine that is used for both male and female reproductive health and has a long history of safe use. We evaluated the effectiveness of two variations of OJa (OJa1 and OJa2) for treating menopausal symptoms in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Both OJa preparations were effective for relieving indicators of hot flashes and depression, and for preventing loss of bone mineral density and lean body mass. Only OJa 2 prevented memory dysfunction. These results show that the traditional Oriental medicine, Ojayeonjonghwan, has the potential to relieve menopausal symptoms in women and should be further evaluated in human clinical trials as an alternative to convention therapies in women for whom conventional therapies are not indicated or found to be ineffective.

Effect of Sheng-Jiang Powder on Obesity-Induced Multiple Organ Injuries in Rats

Background and Aims

Obesity has become the main public health issue nowadays with poor control and has been associated with increased risk of multiorgan disease, but the specific mechanism and effective medication are still to be addressed. Sheng-jiang powder (SJP) showed great potential in preventing obesity in Chinese researches but has no trace in English reports. This study was designed to investigate the effect of SJP on obesity and obesity-mediated multiorgan injuries.

Methods

Rats were randomized into normal group (NG), obese group (OG), and SJP treatment group (SG). Obesity was induced by high-fat diet feeding. Rats were gavaged with SJP/normal saline daily from the third week and all rats were sacrificed after 12 weeks' feeding. Tissues were obtained for cytokines tests.

Results

Firstly, high-fat diet feeding led to significant obesity. Compared to NG, the level of SOD in the liver, spleen, lung, and kidney was much lower in OG (p < 0.05), while the pathological scores of pancreas, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney were much higher. SJP significantly increased SOD level in the liver, spleen, and lung and reduced the pathological scores of pancreas, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney correspondingly (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

SJP ameliorates inflammatory response and mitigates obesity-induced multiple organ injuries.
