Superhydrophobic surfaces developed by mimicking hierarchical surface morphology of lotus leaf

Using a Carbon Quantum Dot Suspension as a New Solvent for Clear Hydrophobic Surface Coating on Hydrophilic PVA Films

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a popular material used in the packaging industry. However, it is vulnerable to moisture, which can affect its performance and durability. Introducing hydrophobic substances, such as tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS), on the top layer of PVA can help maintain the excellent properties of PVA under high-humidity conditions. The low compatibility of hydrophobic materials with the hydrophilic layers allows them to aggregate more easily. To overcome these issues, we focused on the effects of particle size when increasing the coating suspension's dispersibility. A carbon quantum dot (CQD) suspension is an appropriate novel solvent for hydrophobic TEOS/HDTMS coating suspensions because its particles are small and light and exhibit good dispersibility. The CQD suspension formed a smooth hydrophobic coating on the TEOS/HDTMS materials. Furthermore, the uniformly coated PVA with the CQD suspension exhibited a water contact angle of 110°. The water droplets remained intact without being absorbed, confirming the effectiveness of the surface coating facilitated by CQDs. These results suggested that CQDs improved the dispersibility and enhanced the coating quality of TEOS/HDTMS on PVA. Enhancing the hydrophobicity of PVA is ideal for applications in packaging and other fields.

Development of antifouling antibacterial polylactic acid (PLA) -based packaging and application for chicken meat preservation

Microbial contamination is the leading cause of food spoilage and food-borne disease. Here, we developed a multifunctional surface based on polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastic with antifouling and antibacterial properties via a facile dual-coating approach. The surface was designed with hierarchical micro/nano-scale roughness and low surface energy. Bactericidal agent polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) was incorporated to endow the film with bactericidal activity. The film had good superhydrophobic, antifouling and antibacterial performance, with a water contact angle of 154.3°, antibacterial efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus of 99.9 % and 99.6 %, respectively, and biofilm inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus of 63.5 % and 68.9 %, respectively. Synergistic effects of antibacterial adhesion and contact killing of bacteria contributed to the significant antibacterial performance of the film. The biobased biodegradable film was highly effective in preventing microbial growth when applied as antibacterial food packaging for poultry product, extending the shelf life of fresh chicken breast up to eight days.

The Design and Analysis of the Fabrication of Micro- and Nanoscale Surface Structures and Their Performance Applications from a Bionic Perspective

This paper comprehensively discusses the fabrication of bionic-based ultrafast laser micro-nano-multiscale surface structures and their performance analysis. It explores the functionality of biological surface structures and the high adaptability achieved through optimized self-organized biomaterials with multilayered structures. This study details the applications of ultrafast laser technology in biomimetic designs, particularly in preparing high-precision, wear-resistant, hydrophobic, and antireflective micro- and nanostructures on metal surfaces. Advances in the fabrications of laser surface structures are analyzed, comparing top-down and bottom-up processing methods and femtosecond laser direct writing. This research investigates selective absorption properties of surface structures at different scales for various light wavelengths, achieving coloring or stealth effects. Applications in dirt-resistant, self-cleaning, biomimetic optical, friction-resistant, and biocompatible surfaces are presented, demonstrating potential in biomedical care, water-vapor harvesting, and droplet manipulation. This paper concludes by highlighting research frontiers, theoretical and technological challenges, and the high-precision capabilities of femtosecond laser technology in related fields.

ROS-responsive hydrogels: from design and additive manufacturing to biomedical applications

Hydrogels with intricate 3D networks and high hydrophilicity have qualities resembling those of biological tissues, making them ideal candidates for use as smart biomedical materials. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsive hydrogels are an innovative class of smart hydrogels, and are cross-linked by ROS-responsive modules through covalent interactions, coordination interactions, or supramolecular interactions. Due to the introduction of ROS response modules, this class of hydrogels exhibits a sensitive response to the oxidative stress microenvironment existing in organisms. Simultaneously, due to the modularity of the ROS-responsive structure, ROS-responsive hydrogels can be manufactured on a large scale through additive manufacturing. This review will delve into the design, fabrication, and applications of ROS-responsive hydrogels. The main goal is to clarify the chemical principles that govern the response mechanism of these hydrogels, further providing new perspectives and methods for designing responsive hydrogel materials.

Starch/chitosan nanoparticles bionanocomposite membranes for methylene blue dye removal

This research aims to develop relatively new membranes from starch biopolymer incorporated with different concentrations (0, 5, 10, 15, 20% w/w of solid starch) of chitosan nanoparticles (CNP) that can be used for water treatment. The membranes were fabricated using the solvent casting method while the CNP was produced using the ionic gelation method. The membranes were characterized in terms of morphology, porosity, water vapor permeability (WVP), and water contact angle. The application of the membranes to treat water was demonstrated on methylene blue solution because methylene blue is a commonly used dye in many industries. It was found that the starch/10% CNP membrane was the optimum membrane for methylene blue dye treatment because the membrane exhibits a smooth surface, high WVP (1.67 × 10-10g Pa-1h-1m-1), high porosity (59.92%), low water contact angle value (44.8°), and resulted in the highest percentage removal of methylene blue (94.0%) after the filtration. After filtration, the starch/10% CNP membrane was still in good condition without breakage. In conclusion, the starch/CNP membranes produced in this study are promising for sustainable and environmentally friendly water treatment, especially for water containing methylene blue dye. This research aligns with current thematic trends in bionanohybrid composite materials utilization, offering innovative solutions for addressing water pollution challenges.

Hydrophobization of Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogel Using Soy Wax to Improve Sorption Properties

A special technique has been developed for producing a composite aerogel which consists of graphene oxide and soy wax (GO/wax). The reduction of graphene oxide was carried out by the stepwise heating of this aerogel to 250 °C. The aerogel obtained in the process of the stepwise thermal treatment of rGO/wax was studied by IR and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetry. The heat treatment led to an increase in the wax fraction accompanied by an increase in the contact angle of the rGO/wax aerogel surface from 136.2 °C to 142.4 °C. The SEM analysis has shown that the spatial structure of the aerogel was formed by sheets of graphene oxide, while the wax formed rather large (200-1000 nm) clumps in the folds of graphene oxide sheets and small (several nm) deposits on the flat surface of the sheets. The sorption properties of the rGO/wax aerogel were studied with respect to eight solvent, oil, and petroleum products, and it was found that dichlorobenzene (85.8 g/g) and hexane (41.9 g/g) had the maximum and minimum sorption capacities, respectively. In the case of oil and petroleum products, the indicators were in the range of 52-63 g/g. The rGO/wax aerogel was found to be highly resistant to sorption-desorption cycles. The cyclic tests also revealed a swelling effect that occurred differently for different parts of the aerogel.

Laser-induced plasma micromachining on surfaces parallel to the incident laser in different solutions

Laser-induced plasma micromachining (LIPMM) is an advanced technology that utilizes the plasma generated from laser breakdown to remove material, thereby facilitating the fabrication of microstructures. This paper explores the use of LIPMM on 304 stainless steel surfaces parallel to the laser beam in different solutions, focusing on the impact of the liquid environment on the machining process. It presents a theoretical analysis of the material removal mechanisms unique to this orientation and experimentally investigates how water, a salt solution, and ethanol affect plasma shockwave characteristics. Notably, the plasma shockwave in the salt solution demonstrates the most significant peak pressure and energy, enhancing the micromachining efficiency. These findings suggest that varying the liquid environment can significantly influence LIPMM's effectiveness, offering potential improvements in precision and control. This study broadens the understanding of LIPMM applications, especially in orientations not commonly explored, and opens new possibilities for advanced micromachining techniques in various industrial applications.

Influence of Laser Treatment of Ti6Al4V on the Behavior of Biological Cells

This article explores the enhancement of material surface properties of Ti6Al4V, potentially applicable to dental implants, through ultra-short pulse laser systems. This study investigates potential connections between surface wettability and biocompatibility, addressing the challenge of improving variability in material properties with specific laser treatment. Several designed microstructures were manufactured using a picosecond laser system. After that, the wettability of these structures was measured using the sessile drop method. The basic behavior and growth activity of biological cells (MG-63 cell line) on treated surfaces were also analyzed. While the conducted tests did not conclusively establish correlations between wettability and biocompatibility, the results indicated that laser treatment of Ti6Al4V could effectively enlarge the active surface to better biological cell colonization and adhesion and provide a focused moving orientation. This outcome suggests the potential application of laser treatment in producing special dental implants to mitigate the issues during and following implantation.

Inverse design of pore wall chemistry and topology through active learning of surface group interactions

Design of next-generation membranes requires a nanoscopic understanding of the effect of biologically inspired heterogeneous surface chemistries and topologies (roughness) on local water and solute behavior. In particular, the rejection of small, neutral solutes, such as boric acid, poses a heretofore unsolved challenge. In prior work, a computational inverse design technique using an evolutionary optimization successfully uncovered new surface design strategies for optimized transport of water over solutes in smooth, model pores consisting of two surface chemistries. However, extending such an approach to more complex (and realistic) scenarios involving many surface chemistries as well as surface roughness is challenging due to the expanded design space. In this work, we develop a new approach that uses active learning to optimize in a reduced feature space of surface group interactions, finding parameters that lead to their assembly into ordered, optimal patterns. This approach rapidly identifies novel surface functionalizations that maximize the difference in water and boric acid transport through the nanopore. Moreover, we find that the roughness of the nanopore wall, independent of its chemistry, can be leveraged to enhance transport selectivity: oscillations in the pore wall diameter optimally inhibit boric acid transport by creating energetic wells from which the solute must escape to transport down the pore. This proof-of-concept demonstrates the potential for active learning strategies, in concert with molecular simulations, to rapidly navigate complex design spaces of aqueous interfaces and is promising as a tool for engineering water-mediated surface interactions for a broad range of applications.

Bionic Nanocoating of Prosthetic Grafts Significantly Reduces Bacterial Growth

Prosthetic materials are a source of bacterial infections, with significant morbidity and mortality. Utilizing the bionic "Lotus effect," we generated superhydrophobic vascular prostheses by nanocoating and investigated their resistance to bacterial colonization. Nanoparticles were generated from silicon dioxide (SiO2), and coated vascular prostheses developed a nanoscale roughness with superhydrophobic characteristics. Coated grafts and untreated controls were incubated with different bacterial solutions including heparinized blood under mechanical stress and during artificial perfusion and were analyzed. Bioviability- and toxicity analyses of SiO2 nanoparticles were performed. Diameters of SiO2 nanoparticles ranged between 20 and 180 nm. Coated prostheses showed a water contact angle of > 150° (mean 154 ± 3°) and a mean water roll-off angle of 9° ± 2°. Toxicity and viability experiments demonstrated no toxic effects of SiO2 nanoparticles on human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and HEK239T cells. After artificial perfusion with a bacterial solution (Luciferase+ Escherichia coli), bioluminescence imaging measurements showed a significant reduction of bacterial colonization of superhydrophobic material-coated prostheses compared to that of untreated controls. At the final measurement (t = 60 min), a 97% reduction of bacterial colonization was observed with superhydrophobic material-coated prostheses. Superhydrophobic vascular prostheses tremendously reduced bacterial growth. During artificial perfusion, the protective superhydrophobic effects of the vascular grafts could be confirmed using bioluminescence imaging.

Transforming polypropylene waste into transparent anti-corrosion weather-resistant and anti-bacterial superhydrophobic films

The global pollution crisis arising from the accumulation of plastic in landfills and the environment necessitates addressing plastic waste issues. Notably, polypropylene (PP) waste accounts for 20% of total plastic waste and holds promise for hydrophobic applications in the realm of recycling. Herein, the transparent and non-transparent superhydrophobic films made from waste PP are reported. A hierarchical structure with protrusions is induced through spin-casting and thermally induced phase separation. The films had a water contact angle of 159° and could vary in thickness, strength, roughness, and hydrophobicity depending on end-user requirements. The Bode plot indicated enhanced corrosion resistance in the superhydrophobic films. Antibacterial trials with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus microbial solutions showed that the superhydrophobic film had a significantly lower rate of colony-forming units compared to both the transparent surface and the control blank sample. Moreover, a life cycle assessment revealed that the film production resulted in a 62% lower embodied energy and 34% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin PP pellets sourced from petroleum. These films exhibit distinctiveness with their dual functionality as coatings and freestanding films. Unlike conventional coatings that require chemical application onto the substrate, these films can be mechanically applied using adhesive tapes on a variety of surfaces. Overall, the effective recycling of waste PP into versatile superhydrophobic films not only reduces environmental impact but also paves the way for a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Boosting the output performance of triboelectric nanogenerators via surface engineering and structure designing

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been utilized in a wide range of applications, including smart wearable devices, self-powered sensors, energy harvesting, and high-voltage power sources. The surface morphology and structure of TENGs play a critical role in their output performance. In this review, we analyze the working mechanism of TENGs with the aim to improve their output performance and systematically summarize the morphological engineering and structural design strategies for TENGs. Additionally, we present the emerging applications of TENGs with specific structures and surfaces. Finally, we discuss the potential future development and industrial application of TENGs. By deeply exploring the surface and structural design strategy of high-performance TENGs, it is conducive to further promote the application of TENGs in actual production. We hope that this review provides insights and guidance for the morphological and structural design of TENGs in the future.

Mechanical Actuation via Homeomorphic Transformations of Topological Solitons within Polymer Coatings

Topological solitons are currently under investigation for their exotic properties, especially in nonlinear physics, optics, and material sciences. However, challenges of robust generation and limited stability over time have hindered their practical uses. To address this issue, an approach is developed to form structured arrays of solitons in films of polymerizable liquid crystals. Their complex molecular architecture is preserved by in situ photopolymerization forming a stable liquid crystal network. Most excitingly, their properties are advanced to include responsiveness functions. When thermally actuated, these topological solitons mediate the reconfiguration of surface topographies. Complex shape changes occur depending on the intrinsic complex spatial distribution of the director, which may even lead to full shape inversion and topographical changes as high as ≈40% of the initial thickness. Conversely, the shape changes provide information on the initial director profile, which is consistent with the mathematical model. The soliton-containing polymer coatings are applicable in multiple domains, ranging from tunable optics to haptics, and from shape-coupled sensing systems to temperature-coupled heat management.

Micro-/Nanohierarchical Structures Physically Engineered on Surfaces: Analysis and Perspective

The high demand for micro-/nanohierarchical structures as components of functional substrates, bioinspired devices, energy-related electronics, and chemical/physical transducers has inspired their in-depth studies and active development of the related fabrication techniques. In particular, significant progress has been achieved in hierarchical structures physically engineered on surfaces, which offer the advantages of wide-range material compatibility, design diversity, and mechanical stability, and numerous unique structures with important niche applications have been developed. This review categorizes the basic components of hierarchical structures physically engineered on surfaces according to function/shape and comprehensively summarizes the related advances, focusing on the fabrication strategies, ways of combining basic components, potential applications, and future research directions. Moreover, the physicochemical properties of hierarchical structures physically engineered on surfaces are compared based on the function of their basic components, which may help to avoid the bottlenecks of conventional single-scale functional substrates. Thus, the present work is expected to provide a useful reference for scientists working on multicomponent functional substrates and inspire further research in this field.

Self-Cleaning and Spectral Selective Membrane for Sustainable Radiative Cooling

Radiative cooling materials have attracted great attention due to their superiority in energy-free cooling, especially for outdoor applications. However, outdoor cooling performance is threatened by surface pollution. Herein, we demonstrate a ternary compound system, including polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS), and hydrophobic silicon dioxide (SiO2), to synchronously achieve self-cooling and self-cleaning properties through biomimetically building a lotus-like papillomatous structure. The optimized membrane has a high infrared emissivity of 0.93, a sunlight reflectivity of 97.2%, and a water contact angle of 150.5°and not only efficiently cools the object to a suitable temperature but also protects the membrane from polluting and keeps cooling for a long time. The result shows that the membrane can cool a nonfebrile object by 30.5 and 1.7 °C for noon and night, respectively, and the noon and night-time temperature drops are 10.8 and 13.5 °C for the self-heating object, compared to the bare state. Meanwhile, the membrane always keeps self-cleaning if slurry is splashed onto its surface or it is exposed to slurry. Importantly, the integration of superhydrophobic and radiative cooling properties ensures that the membrane has permanent cooling performance by protecting it from being contaminated, which is significant for outdoor applications.

Effect of Polymer Waste Mix Filler on Polymer Concrete Composites

The hazards of polymer waste and emitted gas on the environment pose a global challenge. As a trial to control this, the current work aims to reuse the polymer waste mix (PM) as fillers in calcium silicate to prepare new composites of environmentally friendly polymer concrete. PM was first subjected to treatment to obtain treated PM (TPM) and then was filled in new dicalcium silicate cement with different concentrations. The microstructural characterizations declare the successful preparation of the dicalcium silicate base material. After the curing reaction, the precipitated carbonate main product is responsible for the gained properties. The CO2 uptake% in the proposed composites reached 16.6%, referring to the successful storage of CO2 gas during curing. The treatment reaction led to an increase in the flexural and compression strengths due to the strengthening of the polymer waste mix-cement interface; the strengths were increased gradually with more contents of TPM fillers. 7% TPM-cement concentration achieved the highest flexural strength and compression strength of10.2 and 12.7%, respectively, compared with blank cement. The used polymer improved slightly the pull-off force of the prepared cement, and 7 and 5% TPM-cement composites have the maximum values. All the proposed composites passed the impact testing without failure, where the combination between the polymer waste and silicate cement resulted in a stable composite surface. Compared with the blank, the different concentrations of TPM-cement composites show more stability against water absorption. In addition, the proposed composites and blank cement have a very low carbon dioxide emission. The ability to recycle the polymer waste, form new type of low-energy silicate, improve the mechanical and surface properties, uptake CO2 gas, and reduce gas emission makes the proposed polymer waste mix-cement composites as environmentally friendly construction products.

Controlling Superhydrophobicity on Complex Substrates Based on a Vapor-Phase Sublimation and Deposition Polymerization

The superhydrophobic properties of material surfaces have attracted significant research and practical development in a wide range of applications. In the present study, a superhydrophobic coating was fabricated using a vapor-phase sublimation and deposition process. This process offers several advantages, including a controllable and tunable superhydrophobic property, a dry and solvent-free process that uses well-defined water/ice templates during fabrication, and a coating technology that is applicable to various substrates, regardless of their dimensions or complex geometric configurations. The fabrication process exploits time-dependent condensation to produce ice templates with a controlled surface morphology and roughness. The templates are sacrificed via vapor sublimation, which results in mass transfer of water vapor out of the system. A second vapor source of a polymer precursor is then introduced to the system, and deposition occurs upon polymerization on the iced templates, replicating the same topologies from the iced templates. The continuation of the co-current sublimation and deposition processes finally renders permanent hierarchical structures of the polymer coatings that combine the native hydrophobic property of the polymer and the structured property by the sacrificed ice templates, achieving a level of superhydrophobicity that is tunable from 90° to 164°. The experiments demonstrated the use of [2,2]paracyclophanes as the starting materials for forming the superhydrophobic coatings of poly(p-xylylenes) on substrate surfaces. In comparison to conventional vapor deposition of poly(p-xylylenes), which resulted in dense thin-film coatings with only a moderate water contact angle of approximately 90°, the reported superhydrophobic coatings and fabrication process can achieve a high water contact angle of 164°. Demonstrations furthermore revealed that the proposed coatings are durable while maintaining superhydrophobicity on various substrates, including an intraocular lens and a cardiovascular stent, even against harsh treatment conditions and varied solution compositions used on the substrates.

IMPROVING THE LONG-TERM DURABILITY OF POLYMERS USED IN BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS

Hydrophobic surfaces can improve the long-term mechanical response of polymers by delaying their degradation caused by moisture absorption over time. This improvement in long-term mechanical performance can significantly increase the lifespan of polymers used in various biomedical applications, such as total joint replacement prostheses applications. Although a number of surface modification techniques have been developed over the years, such as introduction of various textures on the surface; their specific influences on hydrophobicity enhancement as well as long-term mechanical performance are yet to be fully understood. In this study, surface textures, with variation in type and geometry, are introduced on model Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) surfaces to study the effect of surface modification on hydrophobicity and long-term mechanical performance under environmental conditions. The results show that introduction of surface textures significantly improves the hydrophobicity of model polymers. Texture length or diameter significantly affects the improvement in hydrophobicity. However, texture spacing does not have significant influence on the improvement in hydrophobicity. How this improvement in hydrophobicity facilitates improving the long-term mechanical performance under environmental conditions is investigated. The study provides useful guidelines to improve the long-term mechanical response of polymers for various applications, including biomedical applications.

Overview of strategies to improve the antibacterial property of dental implants

The increasing number of peri-implant diseases and the unsatisfactory results of conventional treatment are causing great concern to patients and medical staff. The effective removal of plaque which is one of the key causes of peri-implant disease from the surface of implants has become one of the main problems to be solved urgently in the field of peri-implant disease prevention and treatment. In recent years, with the advancement of materials science and pharmacology, a lot of research has been conducted to enhance the implant antimicrobial properties, including the addition of antimicrobial coatings on the implant surface, the adjustment of implant surface topography, and the development of new implant materials, and significant progress has been made in various aspects. Antimicrobial materials have shown promising applications in the prevention of peri-implant diseases, but meanwhile, there are some shortcomings, which leads to the lack of clinical widespread use of antimicrobial materials. This paper summarizes the research on antimicrobial materials applied to implants in recent years and presents an outlook on the future development.

Research progress of bionic fog collection surfaces based on special structures from natural organisms

With the increasing shortage of water resources, people are seeking more innovative ways to collect fog to meet the growing need for production and the demand for livelihood. It has been proven that fog collection is efficient for collecting water in dry but foggy areas. As a hot research topic in recent years, bionic surfaces with fog collection functions have attracted widespread attention in practical applications and basic research. By studying natural organisms and bionic surfaces, more avenues are provided for the development of fog collection devices. Firstly, starting from biological prototypes, this article explored the structural characteristics and fog collection mechanisms of natural organisms such as spider silk, desert beetles, cactus, Nepenthes and other animals and plants (Sarracenia, shorebird and wheat awn), revealing the fog collection mechanism of the natural organisms based on microstructures. Secondly, based on the theory of interfacial tension, we would delve into the fog collection function's theoretical basis and wetting model, expounding the fog collection mechanism from a theoretical perspective. Thirdly, a detailed introduction was given to prepare bionic surfaces and recently explore fog collection devices. For bionic surfaces of a single biological prototype, the fog collection efficiency is about 2000-4000 mg cm-2 h-1. For bionic surfaces of multiple biological prototypes, the fog collection efficiency reaches 7000 mg cm-2 h-1. Finally, a critical analysis was conducted on the current challenges and future developments, aiming to promote the next generation of fog collection devices from a scientific perspective from research to practical applications.

Research Progress of Superhydrophobic Materials in the Field of Anti-/De-Icing and Their Preparation: A Review

Accumulated ice has brought much damage to engineering and people's lives. The accumulation of ice can affect the flight safety of aircraft and lead to the failure of cables and power generation blades; it can even cause damage to human life. Traditional anti-icing and de-icing strategies have many disadvantages such as high energy consumption, low efficiency, or pollution of the environment. Therefore, inspired by animal communities, researchers have developed new passive anti-icing materials such as superhydrophobic material. In this paper, the solid surface wetting phenomenon and superhydrophobic anti-icing and de-icing mechanism were introduced. The methods of fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces were summarized. The research progress of wear-resistant superhydrophobic coatings, self-healing/self-repairing superhydrophobic coatings, photothermal superhydrophobic coatings, and electrothermal superhydrophobic coatings in the field of anti-icing and de-icing was reviewed. The current problems and challenges were analyzed, and the development trend of superhydrophobic materials was also prospected in the field of anti-icing and de-icing. The practicality of current superhydrophobic materials should continue to be explored in depth.

Impact of surface cooling on the water harvesting efficiency of nanostructured window glass

Humans face a severe shortage of fresh water due to economic growth, climate change, overpopulation, and overutilization. Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is a promising solution where clean water is collected from the air through various approaches, including dropwise condensation. However, designing surfaces that balance rapid condensation with efficient water removal is challenging. To address this issue, inspired by the efficient water collection mechanisms in the skin of cold-blooded tree frogs, we propose an eco-friendly approach to collect fresh water from cooled window glass. We fabricated various planar and TiO2 nanostructured surfaces including surfaces mimicking a lotus leaf and a hybrid surface mimicking a desert beetle and a cactus, with different wettability levels such as superhydrophilic, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, superhydrophobic, and biphilic. Sub-cooling of glass substrates between 5 and 15 °C using a Peltier device significantly enhanced the condensation process for all surfaces, with modest dependency on surface properties. This cooling temperature regime could be achieved by geothermal cooling methods that consume little energy. To improve visibility for window applications, we developed hydrophobic polymer nanofilm-modified glass substrates using a simple spin-coating technique, and achieved comparable water harvesting efficiency to that of nanostructured substrates. Our study provides insight into the optimal surface structures and cooling temperature for window glass AWH systems that could be used with an underground cooling system.

Advances in Sol-Gel-Based Superhydrophobic Coatings for Wood: A Review

As the focus of architecture, furniture, and other fields, wood has attracted extensive attention for its many advantages, such as environmental friendliness and excellent mechanical properties. Inspired by the wetting model of natural lotus leaves, researchers prepared superhydrophobic coatings with strong mechanical properties and good durability on the modified wood surface. The prepared superhydrophobic coating has achieved functions such as oil-water separation and self-cleaning. At present, some methods such as the sol-gel method, the etching method, graft copolymerization, and the layer-by-layer self-assembly method can be used to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces, which are widely used in biology, the textile industry, national defense, the military industry, and many other fields. However, most methods for preparing superhydrophobic coatings on wood surfaces are limited by reaction conditions and process control, with low coating preparation efficiency and insufficiently fine nanostructures. The sol-gel process is suitable for large-scale industrial production due to its simple preparation method, easy process control, and low cost. In this paper, the research progress on wood superhydrophobic coatings is summarized. Taking the sol-gel method with silicide as an example, the preparation methods of superhydrophobic coatings on wood surfaces under different acid-base catalysis processes are discussed in detail. The latest progress in the preparation of superhydrophobic coatings by the sol-gel method at home and abroad is reviewed, and the future development of superhydrophobic surfaces is prospected.

Durability and Additional Properties of Anodized Aluminum-Based Coatings with Different Wettability under Natural Conditions

The study aimed to test the durability of coatings under natural conditions. The present study focused on the changes in wettability and additional properties of the coatings under natural conditions. The specimens were subjected to outdoor exposure and additionally immersed in the pond. Impregnating porous anodized aluminum is a popular production method for hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces. However, prolonged exposure of such coatings to natural conditions causes leaching of the impregnate and, thus, the loss of hydrophobic properties. After the loss of hydrophobic properties, all kinds of impurities and fouling adhere better to the porous structure. Additionally, deterioration of anti-icing and anti-corrosion properties was observed. Finally, the self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-icing and anti-corrosion properties were comparable or even worse to those of the hydrophilic coating. In the case of superhydrophobic specimens, during outdoor exposure there was no loss of superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning and anti-corrosion properties. Still, despite this, the icing delay time dropped. During outdoor exposure, the structure, which initially had anti-icing properties, may degrade. Nevertheless, the hierarchical structure responsible for the superhydrophobic effect can still be preserved. The superhydrophobic coating initially had the best anti-fouling properties. However, the coating was also gradually losing its superhydrophobic properties during water immersion.

A Novel Alginate Film Based on Nanocoating Approach for Enteric-Release Tablets

The objective of this study was to propose a new coating film for biodegradable polymers and environmentally friendly processing. Here, a novel implementation of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) into a biodegradable alginate (ALG) film composition created a new gastric-resistant film for an enteric-release tablet. Experiments were performed on a water-soluble substance (thiamine nitrate) to characterize the effects of SLN upon the addition of the ALG coating formulation. The coated tablets or cast films were characterized based on delayed-release properties, surface morphology, moisture resistance, and chemical interactions. The SLN-ALG film displayed gastric-resistant properties (< 10% drug substance dissolved at pH 1.2) and rapid disintegration in the intestinal medium (pH 6.8). Morphological analysis using a microscope and scanning electron microscope confirmed the uniformity and smoothness of the SLN-ALG film, which improved the mechanical properties of the film. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry indicated that SLN contributed to the formation of the film, which maintained free carboxylic groups, making the SLN-ALG film a higher acid resistance, but soluble in pH 6.8 buffer. These promising results suggest a novel nanotechnology-based coating formulation for various enteric-release dosage forms. Because of their biodegradability, the proposed ingredients and processes are safe and environment-friendly.

Permanent Anticoagulation Blood-Vessel by Mezzo-Sized Double Re-Entrant Structure

Having a permanent omniphobicity on the inner surface of the tube can bring enormous advantages, such as reducing resistance and avoiding precipitation during mass transfer. For example, such a tube can prevent blood clotting when delivering blood composed of complex hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds. However, it is very challenging to fabricate micro and nanostructures inside a tube. To overcome these, a wearability and deformation-free structural omniphobic surface is fabricated. The omniphobic surface can repel liquids by its "air-spring" under the structure, regardless of surface tension. Furthermore, it is not lost an omniphobicity under physical deformation like curved or twisted. By using these properties, omniphobic structures on the inner wall of the tube by the "roll-up" method are fabricated. Fabricated omniphobic tubes still repels liquids, even complex liquids like blood. According to the ex vivo blood tests for medical usage, the tube can reduce thrombus formation by 99%, like the heparin-coated tube. So, it is believed the tube can be soon replaced typical coating-based medical surfaces or anticoagulation blood vessel.

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in nanoparticulate form improves physical and biological performance of scaffolds

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are natural polyesters produced by microorganisms as a source of intracellular energy reserves. Due to their desirable material characteristics, these polymers have been thoroughly investigated for tissue engineering and drug delivery applications. A tissue engineering scaffold serves as a substitute of the native extracellular matrix (ECM) and plays a crucial role in tissue regeneration by providing temporary support for cells during natural ECM formation. In this study, porous, biodegradable scaffolds were prepared using native polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and PHB in nanoparticulate form using salt leaching method, to investigate the differences in the physicochemical properties such as crystallinity, hydrophobicity, surface morphology, roughness, and surface area and biological properties of the prepared scaffolds. As per the BET analysis, PHB nanoparticles-based (PHBN) scaffolds presented a significant difference in the surface area as compare to PHB scaffolds. PHBN scaffolds showed decreased crystallinity and improved mechanical strength as compared to PHB scaffolds. Thermogravimetry analysis shows delayed degradation of PHBN scaffolds. An examination of Vero cell lines' cell viability and adhesion over time revealed enhanced performance of PHBN scaffolds. Our research suggests that scaffold made of PHB nanoparticles could serve as a superior material for tissue engineering applications than its native form.

Preparation of ultrafiltration membrane from discarded polyethylene terephthalate bottles

In this study, the polymeric membranes were prepared using discarded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. The fabrication of the membrane process was carried out using a dope solution composed of polyethylene terephthalate (polymer), O-cresol (as a solvent), and polyethylene glycol 400 (as an additive). The solubility parameters were studied to dissolve the polymer into the solvent at a specific temperature. The melt flow index and thermal analysis were evaluated for the discarded bottles and prepared membranes to ensure the quality and thermal stability of the PET. The porosity of the membranes was determined using scanning electron microscopy. The temperature required to prepare the dope solution was 80 °C with a stirring speed of 350 rpm. Non-solvent-induced phase separation method was used to fabricate the membranes. The coagulation bath was composed of a water-ethanol mixture. The porosity of the prepared membranes ranges between 30 and 50%. The contact angle was determined for the membrane in the range of 40° to 80°. The flux of the membranes was evaluated using membrane testing cell at a specified pressure which ranges from 80 to 150 Lm^-2 h^-1. The prepared membranes could be used in various industries like dairy, pharmaceutical, juice, and beverages to separate temperature-sensitive substances.

Construction of CNC@SiO2@PL Based Superhydrophobic Wood with Excellent Abrasion Resistance Based on Nanoindentation Analysis and Good UV Resistance

Construction of superhydrophobic woods with high abrasion resistance is still a major challenge, and micro analysis for abrasion resistance is scarce. To improve these issues, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)@SiO2@phosphorylated lignin (PL) rods were prepared by SiO2 in situ generated on CNC, and then the modified lignin attached to the CNC@SiO2 rods surface. Subsequently, the superhydrophobic coating was constructed using hydrophobic modified CNC@SiO2@PL rods as the main structural substance by simple spraying or rolling them onto wood surfaces, and both polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and epoxy resin were used as the adhesives. The resulting coating had excellent superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle (WCA) of 157.4° and a slide angle (SA) of 6°. The introduced PL could enhance ultraviolet (UV) resistance of the coating due to the presence of these groups that absorbed UV light in lignin. In the abrasion resistance test, compared with the SiO2/PL coating, the abrasion resistance of the one with CNC was much higher, suggesting that CNC could improve the abrasion resistance of the coating due to its high crystallinity and excellent mechanical strength. The coating with PDMS performed better than the one with epoxy resin because the soft surface could offset part of the external impact by deformation in the abrasion process. This was also consistent with the results of the nanoindentation (NI) tests. In view of the simple preparation and good performance, this superhydrophobic wood will have broad application potential.

Engineering the Performance and Stability of Molybdenum Disulfide for Heavy Metal Removal

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has recently emerged as one of the most promising water nano-based adsorbent materials for heavy metal removal with the potential to provide an alternative to conventional water decontamination technologies. In this study, we demonstrate the trade-off between mercuric removal capacity and overall MoS₂ adsorbent stability, both driven by MoS₂ synthesis parameters. A bottom-up hydrothermal synthesis setup at various growth temperatures was employed to grow flower-like MoS₂ films onto planar alumina supports. A thorough material characterization suggests that an increase in growth temperature from 150 to 210 °C results in higher MoS₂ crystallinity. Interestingly, elevated growth temperatures resulted in poor mercuric removal (525 mg g^-1, K = 2.2 × 10^-3 h^-1), yet showed enhanced chemical stability (i.e., minimal molybdenum leaching during exposure to mercury). On the other hand, low growth temperatures produce amorphous supported MoS₂, exhibiting superb mercuric removal capabilities (5158 mg g^-1, K = 36.1 × 10^-3 h^-1) but displaying poor stability, resulting in substantial byproduct molybdate leaching. Mercuric removal by crystalline MoS₂ was accomplished by adsorption and electrostatic attraction-based removal mechanisms, whereas redox reactions and HgS crystallization-based removal mechanisms were more dominant when using amorphous MoS₂ for mercury removal. Overall, our study provides essential insights into the delicate balance between MoS₂ mercuric removal capabilities and MoS₂ degradation, both related to material synthesis growth conditions. Employment of nano-enabled water treatments in general, and MoS₂ for heavy metal removal in particular, requires us to better understand these important fundamental trade-off behaviors to achieve sustainable, effective, and responsible implementation of nanotechnologies in large scale systems.

One-Step Fabrication of Paper-Based Inkjet-Printed Graphene for Breath Monitor Sensors

Irregularities in breathing patterns can be detected using breath monitor sensors, and this help clinicians to predict health disorders ranging from sleep disorders to heart failures. Variations in humidity during the inhalation and exhalation of breath have been utilized as a marker to detect breath patterns, and graphene-based devices are the favored sensing media for relative humidity (RH). In general, most graphene-based RH sensors have been used to explore resistance change as a measurement parameter to calibrate against the RH value, and they are prone to noise interference. Here, we fabricated RH sensors using graphene ink as a sensing medium and printed them in the shape of interdigital electrodes on glossy paper using an office inkjet printer. Further, we investigated the capacitance change in the sensor for the RH changes in the range of 10-70%. It exhibited excellent sensitivity with 0.03 pF/% RH, good stability, and high intraday and interday repeatability, with relative standard deviations of 1.2% and 2.2%, respectively. Finally, the sensor was embedded into a face mask and interfaced with a microcontroller, and capacitance change was measured under three different breathing situations: normal breathing, deep breathing, and coughing. The result show that the dominant frequency for normal breath is 0.22 Hz, for deep breath, it is 0.11 Hz, and there was no significant dominant cough frequency due to persistent coughing and inconsistent patterns. Moreover, the sensor exhibited a short response and recovery time (<5 s) during inhalation and exhalation. Thus, the proposed paper-based RH sensor is promising wearable and disposable healthcare technology for clinical and home care health applications.

Fabricated polyhydroxyalkanoates blend scaffolds enhance cell viability and cell proliferation

For tissue engineering applications, cell adhesion and proliferation are crucial factors, and blending polymers is one of the most effective ways to create a biocompatible scaffold with desired properties. In order to create new potential porous, biodegradable scaffolds using salt leaching technique, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) were blended in different ratios. SEM, BET, FTIR, and water contact angle measurements were used to analyze the scaffolds' porous surface, surface area, and roughness, chemical interaction, and hydrophilicity. Additionally, a hemolysis assay revealed that the mixtures were hemocompatible and had no impact on red blood cells. Different cells- Vero, Hela and MDBK cell lines cultured on the porous mats of these biopolymeric scaffolds exhibited significant increase in cell viability and attachment over time. The overall finding was that blended scaffolds exhibited reduced crystallinity, diverse porosity, higher surface area and hydrophilicity, and better cell viability, proliferation and adhesion. Our findings imply that a blended scaffold could be more suitable for use in tissue engineering applications.

Antibacterial features of material surface: strong enough to serve as antibiotics?

Bacteria are small but need big efforts to control. The use of antibiotics not only produces superbugs that are increasingly difficult to inactivate, but also raises environmental concerns with the growing consumption. It is now believed that the antibacterial task can count on some physiochemical features of material surfaces, which can be anti-adhesive or bactericidal without releasing toxicants. It is necessary to evaluate to what extent can we rely on the surface design since the actual application scenarios will need the antibacterial performance to be sharp, robust, environmentally friendly, and long-lasting. Herein, we review the recent laboratory advances that have been classified based on the specific surface features, including hydrophobicity, charge potential, micromorphology, stiffness and viscosity, and photoactivity, and the antibacterial mechanisms of each feature are included to provide a basic rationale for future design. The significance of anti-biofilms is also introduced, given the big role of biofilms in bacteria-caused damage. A perspective on the potential wide application of antibacterial surface features as a substitute or supplement to antibiotics is then discussed. Surface design is no doubt a solution worthy to explore, and future success will be a result of further progress in multiple directions, including mechanism study and material preparation.

Surface and Interface Engineering for the Catalysts of Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The massive use of fossil fuels releases a great amount of CO₂ , which substantially contributes to the global warming. For the global goal of putting CO₂ emission under control, effective utilization of CO₂ is particularly meaningful. Electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (eCO₂ RR) has great potential in CO₂ utilization, because it can convert CO₂ into valuable carbon-containing chemicals and feedstock using renewable electricity. The catalyst design for eCO₂ RR is a key challenge to achieving efficient conversion of CO₂ to fuels and useful chemicals. For a typical heterogeneous catalyst, surface and interface engineering is an effective approach to enhance reaction activity. Herein, the development and research progress in CO₂ catalysts with focus on surface and interface engineering are reviewed. First, the fundaments of eCO₂ RR is briefly discussed from the reaction mechanism to performance evaluation methods, introducing the role of the surface and interface engineering of electrocatalyst in eCO₂ RR. Then, several routes to optimize the surface and interface of CO₂ electrocatalysts, including morphology, dopants, atomic vacancies, grain boundaries, surface modification, etc., are reviewed and representative examples are given. At the end of this review, we share our personal views in future research of eCO₂ RR.

Advances in Research on Titanium and Titanium Alloys with Antibacterial Functionality for Medical Use—A Review

Materials based on titanium and its alloys are widely used in the medical and dental fields because of their excellent physical properties such as hardness, ductility and elastic modulus, etc. However, because commonly used titanium alloy internal plants do not have antibacterial properties, when these implants are implanted into the human body, there is a certain risk of infection. Such infections are extremely painful for the patient and problematic for the attending physician. In the past, infections of implants were usually treated with systemic antibiotics in combination with thorough debridement or implant replacement. However, these are passive treatments and typically cause huge physical and economic burdens on the patient. Therefore, attempts towards the development of implants with antibacterial functionality have been increasing, with the combination of titanium alloys with antibiotics, antibacterialmetals, and antibacterial peptides being the main research direction. Therefore, this paper will discuss the latest research progress in the preparation of titanium alloys with antibacterial strategies such as combining antibiotics or antimicrobial peptides, adding antimicrobial metals, and the antibacterial properties and biocompatibility of proposed systems are summarised and discussed herein. This review should serve as a reference for further research on antibacterial titanium alloy implants.

Silver Nanoparticles and Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice) Root Extract as Modifying Agents of Hydrogels Designed as Innovative Dressings

The interest in the application of plant extracts as modifiers of polymers intended for biomedical purposes is constantly increasing. The therapeutical properties of the licorice root, including its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity, make this plant particularly promising. The same applies to silver nanoparticles showing antibacterial properties. Thus the main purpose of the research was to design hydrogel dressings containing both licorice root extract and nanosilver so as to obtain a system promoting wound regeneration processes by preventing infection and inflammation within the wound. The first step included the preparation of the plant extract via the solid-liquid extraction using the Soxhlet extractor and the synthesis of silver nanoparticles by the chemical reduction of silver ions using a sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. Subsequently, hydrogels were synthesized via photopolymerization and subjected to studies aiming at characterizing their sorption properties, surface morphology via scanning electron microscopy, and their impact on simulated physiological liquids supported by defining these liquids' influence on hydrogels' structures by FT-IR spectroscopy. Next, the tensile strength of hydrogels and their percentage elongation were determined. Performed studies also allowed for determining the hydrogels' wettability and free surface energies. Finally, the cytotoxicity of hydrogels towards L929 murine fibroblasts via the MTT reduction assay was also verified. It was demonstrated that developed materials showed stability in simulated physiological liquids. Moreover, hydrogels were characterized by high elasticity (percentage elongation within the range of 24-29%), and their surfaces were hydrophilic (wetting angles below 90°). Hydrogels containing both licorice extract and nanosilver showed smooth and homogeneous surfaces. Importantly, cytotoxic properties towards L929 murine fibroblasts were excluded; thus, developed materials seem to have great potential for application as innovative dressings.

Biology and nature: Bionic superhydrophobic surface and principle

Nature is the source of human design inspiration. In order to adapt to the environment better, creatures in nature have formed various morphological structures during billions of years of evolution, among which the superhydrophobic characteristics of some animal and plant surface structures have attracted wide attention. At present, the preparation methods of bionic superhydrophobic surface based on the microstructure of animal and plant body surface include vapor deposition, etching modification, sol-gel method, template method, electrostatic spinning method and electrostatic spraying method, etc., which have been used in medical care, military industry, shipping, textile and other fields. Based on nature, this paper expounds the development history of superhydrophobic principle, summarizes the structure and wettability of superhydrophobic surfaces in nature, and introduces the characteristics differences and applications of different superhydrophobic surfaces in detail. Finally, the challenge of bionic superhydrophobic surface is discussed, and the future development direction of this field is prospected.

Flower-like Superhydrophobic Surfaces Fabricated on Stainless Steel as a Barrier against Corrosion in Simulated Acid Rain

Functionalisation of the metal surface of low-carbon ferritic stainless steel (from hydrophilic to hydrophobic properties) was achieved by flower-like hierarchical structures on a steel substrate prepared by a low-cost immersion method. The flower-like structured hydrophobic layers on the steel substrate were obtained by immersing the samples in an ethanolic solution of stearic acid with the addition of various concentrations of expired vitamin E ((+)α-tocopherol). The stability and corrosion-inhibiting effect of the hierarchically structured (such as natural cornflower) hydrophobic layers were studied systematically during short and long immersion tests, 120 h (five days) in an acidic environment (pH = 3) using potentiodynamic measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronopotentiometry. The surfaces of the samples, their wettability, surface morphology and chemical composition were characterised by contact angle measurements, SEM, ATR-FTIR and EDAX. After 120 h of immersion, the inhibition efficiency of the flower-like structured hydrophobic layers on the steel substrate in the selected corrosion medium remained above 99%, and the hierarchical structure (flower-like structure) was also retained on the surface.

HYDROPHOBICITY IMPROVEMENTS OF POLYMERS USED IN BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS

Improvement in hydrophobicity is important for polymers used in various applications such as biomedical applications, as it can delay their degradation due to long-term exposure to moisture environments. Although a number of surface modification techniques have been developed over the years to improve hydrophobicity, their specific influences on hydrophobicity enhancement as well as long-term mechanical and tribological performances are yet to be fully understood. In this study, surface textures, with variation in type and geometry, are introduced on Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) surfaces to study the effect of surface modification on hydrophobicity and long-term mechanical and tribological performances. Based on the theoretical study using Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter models, surface textures of various types and dimension are introduced on UHMWPE and HDPE surfaces. The results show that introduction of surface textures significantly improves the hydrophobicity of polymers. Specific relationship between texture type and geometry, and improvement in hydrophobicity is explored. Based on the comparison between experimental results and theoretical models, transition state modeling seems to be more suitable in describing the change in hydrophobicity with the addition of surface texture. The study provides useful guidelines to improve hydrophobicity of polymers for biomedical applications.

Tailoring Structure: Current Design Strategies and Emerging Trends to Hierarchical Catalysts

Nature mimicking implies the design of nanostructured materials, which can be assembled into a hierarchical structure, thus outperforming the features of the neat components because of their multiple length scale organization. This approach can be effectively exploited for the design of advanced photocatalysts with superior catalytic activity for energy and environment applications with considerable development in the recent six years. In this context, we propose a review on the state of the art for hierarchical photocatalyst production. Particularly, different synthesis strategies are presented, including template-free structuring, and organic, inorganic, and hybrid templating. Furthermore, emerging approaches based on hybrid and bio-waste templating are also highlighted. Finally, a critical comparison among available methods is carried out based on the envisaged application.

Biotemplate Replication of Novel Mangifera indica Leaf (MIL) for Atmospheric Water Harvesting: Intrinsic Surface Wettability and Collection Efficiency

Water shortage has become a global crisis that has posed and still poses a serious threat to the human race, especially in developing countries. Harvesting moisture from the atmosphere is a viable approach to easing the world water crisis due to its ubiquitous nature. Inspired by nature, biotemplate surfaces have been given considerable attention in recent years though these surfaces still suffer from intrinsic trade-offs making replication more challenging. In the design of artificial surfaces, maximizing their full potential and benefits as that of the natural surface is difficult. Here, we conveniently made use of Mangifera indica leaf (MIL) and its replicated surfaces (RMIL) to collect atmosphere water. This research provides a novel insight into the facile replication mechanism of a wettable surface made of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which has proven useful in collecting atmospheric water. This comparative study shows that biotemplate surfaces (RMIL) with hydrophobic characteristics outperform natural hydrophilic surfaces (DMIL and FMIL) in droplet termination and water collection abilities. Water collection efficiency from the Replicated Mangifera indica leaf (RMIL) surface was shown to be superior to that of the Dry Mangifera indica leaf (DMIL) and Fresh Mangifera indica leaf (FMIL) surfaces. Furthermore, the wettability of the DMIL, FMIL, and RMIL was thoroughly investigated, with the apices playing an important role in droplet roll-off.

Biomimicked large-area anisotropic grooves fromDracaena sanderianaleaf enhances cellular alignment and subsequent differentiation

Cellular alignment is important for the proper functioning of different tissues such as muscles or blood vessel walls. Hence, in tissue engineering, sufficient effort has been made to control cellular orientation and alignment. It has been shown that micro-and nanoscale anisotropic topological features on cell culture substrates can control cellular orientation. Such substrates are fabricated using various lithography techniques such as photolithography and soft lithography. Although such techniques are suitable for creating patterns in small areas to establish a proof-of-concept, patterning large areas with intricate features is an unsolved problem. In this work, we report that a replica of the groove-like anisotropic patterns of the abaxial side of aDracaena sanderiana(bamboo) leaf can be used for large-area patterning of cells. We imprinted the leaf on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and characterised its surface topography using scanning electron microscopy. We further cultured bone marrow human mesenchymal cells (BM-hMSCs), skeletal muscle cells (C2C12), and neuroblastoma cells (SHSY5Y) on the patterned PDMS on which the cells orient along the direction of the grooved pattern. Further, we observed enhanced neuronal differentiation of SHSY5Y cells on biomimicked pattern compared to flat PDMS as measured by percentage of cells with neurites, neurite length and the expression of neuronal differentiation marker beta-III tubulin (TUJ1). This process is simple, frugal, and can be adopted by laboratories with resource constraints. This one-step technique to fabricate large-area anisotropic surface patterns from bamboo leaves can be used as a platform to study cellular alignment and its effect on various cellular functions, including differentiation.

Surgical Applications of Materials Engineered with Antimicrobial Properties

The infection of surgically placed implants is a problem that is both large in magnitude and that broadly affects nearly all surgical specialties. Implant-associated infections deleteriously affect patient quality-of-life and can lead to greater morbidity, mortality, and cost to the health care system. The impact of this problem has prompted extensive pre-clinical and clinical investigation into decreasing implant infection rates. More recently, antimicrobial approaches that modify or treat the implant directly have been of great interest. These approaches include antibacterial implant coatings (antifouling materials, antibiotics, metal ions, and antimicrobial peptides), antibacterial nanostructured implant surfaces, and antibiotic-releasing implants. This review provides a compendium of these approaches and the clinical applications and outcomes. In general, implant-specific modalities for reducing infections have been effective; however, most applications remain in the preclinical or early clinical stages.

Bioinspired Topographic Surface Modification of Biomaterials

Physical surface modification is an approach that has been investigated over the last decade to reduce bacterial adhesion and improve cell attachment to biomaterials. Many techniques have been reported to modify surfaces, including the use of natural sources as inspiration to fabricate topographies on artificial surfaces. Biomimetics is a tool to take advantage of nature to solve human problems. Physical surface modification using animal and vegetal topographies as inspiration to reduce bacterial adhesion and improve cell attachment has been investigated in the last years, and the results have been very promising. However, just a few animal and plant surfaces have been used to modify the surface of biomaterials with these objectives, and only a small number of bacterial species and cell types have been tested. The purpose of this review is to present the most current results on topographic surface modification using animal and plant surfaces as inspiration to modify the surface of biomedical materials with the objective of reducing bacterial adhesion and improving cell behavior.

Lotus-Leaf-Inspired Biomimetic Coatings: Different Types, Key Properties, and Applications in Infrastructures

A universal infrastructural issue is wetting of surfaces; millions of dollars are invested annually for rehabilitation and maintenance of infrastructures including roadways and buildings to fix the damages caused by moisture and frost. The biomimicry of the lotus leaf can provide superhydrophobic surfaces that can repel water droplets, thus reducing the penetration of moisture, which is linked with many deterioration mechanisms in infrastructures, such as steel corrosion, sulfate attack, alkali-aggregate reactions, and freezing and thawing. In cold-region countries, the extent of frost damage due to freezing of moisture in many components of infrastructures will be decreased significantly if water penetration can be minimized. Consequently, it will greatly reduce the maintenance and rehabilitation costs of infrastructures. The present study was conducted to explore any attempted biomimicry of the lotus leaf to produce biomimetic coatings. It focuses on anti-wetting characteristics (e.g., superhydrophobicity, sliding angle, contact angle), self-cleaning capability, durability, and some special properties (e.g., light absorbance and transmission, anti-icing capacity, anti-fouling ability) of lotus-leaf-inspired biomimetic coatings. This study also highlights the potential applications of such coatings, particularly in infrastructures. The most abundant research across coating materials showed superhydrophobicity as being well-tested while self-cleaning capacity and durability remain among the properties that require further research with existing promise. In addition, the special properties of many coating materials should be validated before practical applications.
