Abstract
Bacteria of the genus Listeria are ubiquitous in nature and are found in various food products and food processing facilities. The species Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen that causes listeriosis with a high fatality rate. For the prevention and control of listeriosis, the identification of effective antilisterial compounds is desirable. The number of investigations on nanoparticles (NPs) with antimicrobial activity has increased in recent years. In this context, green nanotechnology is a field of science that focuses on the synthesis of NPs through biological pathways using a wide range of microorganisms and plant extracts, which has led to the biofabrication of novel antimicrobial agents that have demonstrated remarkable potential against pathogenic bacteria. In this review, in vitro studies of the inhibitory action of antimicrobial NPs obtained by green biosynthesis, including silver, gold, zinc, zinc oxide, copper, palladium, and selenium NPs, on the growth of Listeria spp. were comprehensively summarized. This review mainly highlights antimicrobial NPs in biopolymer films against L. monocytogenes. Furthermore, studies on NPs in biopolymer-based functional food packaging films against L. monocytogenes are listed. Finally, safety considerations are indicated. This review provides an overview of the antilisterial activity of bio-based antimicrobial NPs and the potential of nanotechnology as an innovative technology for the development of food packaging films containing antimicrobial NPs to control Listeria spp.

Abstract
The widespread use of plastic in food packaging provides significant challenges due to its non-biodegradability and the risk of hazardous chemicals seeping into food and the environment. This highlights the pressing need to come up with alternatives to traditional plastic that prioritize environmental sustainability, food quality, and safety. The current study presents an up-to-date examination of micro/nano plastic (MP/NP) consumption and their associated toxicity to human health, while also considering bioplastic as safer and eco-friendly alternative materials for packaging. The study contributes to a deeper comprehension of the primary materials utilized for bioplastic manufacturing and their potential for large-scale use. The key findings underscore the distinctive features of bioplastics, such as starch, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polylactic acid, and polybutylene succinate, as well as their blends with active agents, rendering them suitable for innovative food packaging applications. Moreover, the study includes a discussion of insights from various scientific literature, agency reports (governmental and non-governmental), and industry trends in bioplastic production and their potential to combat MP/NP pollution. In essence, the review highlights future research directions for the safe integration of bioplastics in food packaging, addresses outstanding questions, and proposes potential solutions to challenges linked with plastic usage.

Abstract
The application of biodegradable and eco-friendly poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) toward respiratory healthcare has long been thwarted by the poor electroactivity and low surface activity of PLA. Herein, we unravel a microwave-assisted route to fabricate rod-like ZnO nanodielectrics, which were decorated with dopamine (ZnO@PDA) and anchored at the PLA nanofibers via an electrospinning-electrospray approach. The PLA/ZnO@PDA NFMs featured a substantially elevated specific surface area (up to 20.7 m2/g), increased dielectric constant (nearly 1.8) and a surface potential as high as 9.5 kV, resulting in superior air filtering performance (99.45% for PM0.3, 94.1 Pa, 32 L/min) compared with the pure PLA counterpart (90.04%, 169.0 Pa, 32 L/min). The notably increased electroactivity endowed the PLA/ZnO@PDA NFMs with significant improvements in triboelectric properties (output voltage of 11.5 V at 10 N, 0.5 Hz), laying down the cornerstone for self-powered monitoring of personal respiration. More importantly, a deep learning-assisted diagnostic system was developed based on respiration-driven signal patterns, enabling intelligent and real-time disease diagnosis with 100% accuracy for the protective membranes. The proposed hierarchical nanodecoration strategy opens up new possibilities for engendering eco-friendly nanofibers with an exceptional combination of efficient respiratory healthcare and intelligent diagnosis.

Abstract
Nanoparticles of spinel ferrites with a composition of Co0.9Cu0.1Fe2O4 (AM NPs) were effectively synthesized via a hydrothermal route. The structure of ferrite nanoparticles was characterized with X-ray diffraction, which showed a single cubic spinel phase. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were employed to analyse elemental composition and surface morphology, respectively. Moreover, the effects of the Co0.9Cu0.1Fe2O4 on the morphology of [PLA = polylactic acid] nanocomposites were examined through polarized light optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal behaviours for tested samples were studied through [DSC = differential scanning calorimetry] and [TGA = thermal gravimetric analysis]. A great number of minor PLA spherulites were detected using POM in the presence of the Co0.9Cu0.1Fe2O4 ceramic magnetic nanoparticles (AM), increasing with AM nanoparticle contents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the presence of nanoparticles led to an increase in the intensity of diffraction peaks. The DSC findings implied that the crystallization behaviours for the efficient PLA as well as its nanocomposites were affected by the addition of AM nanoparticles. They act as efficient nucleating agents because they shift the temperature of crystallization to a lower value. The Avrami models were used to analyse kinetics data. The experimental data were well described using the Avrami method for all samples tested. The addition of AM to the PLA matrix resulted in a decrease in the crystallization half-time t1/2 values, indicating a faster crystallization rate. TGA data showed that the occurrence of AM nanoparticles decreased the thermal stability of PLA.

Abstract
Most topical drug delivery techniques do not provide therapeutic concentrations for treatment of surgical site and other local infections and, therefore, require some kind of enhancement, such as physical methods like microneedles, the subject of the present investigation. Here, controlled-release long-lasting antibacterial polylactic acid (PLA) microneedles containing 1, 3, and 5% silver nanoparticles (AgNP) were prepared using micro-molding solvent-casting technique. Microneedles were characterized using optical microscopy, SEM, FTIR, XRD, and DSC. Also, mechanical strength, barrier disruption ability, insertion depth, in-vitro release kinetics, antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and silver permeation through rat skin were studied. Microneedles showed good mechanical strength with no signs of failure at an optimum PLA concentration of 25% (w/v). FTIR revealed no chemical interaction between ingredients, and XRD confirmed presence of AgNP in microneedles. Microneedles penetrated the skin model at depth of up to 1143 μm resulting 5-7 times increase in transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Release studies showed 2.2, 6.8, and 8.1 µg silver release from the whole body (obeying Higuchi's release model) and 0.33, 0.45, and 0.78 µg from the needles alone (obeying Fickian-cylindrical type release) for 1, 3, and 5% AgNP microneedles, respectively. Also, prolonged antibacterial activity (for 34 days) was observed. Skin studies over 72 h indicated that besides needles, silver is also released from the baseplate which had a marginal share in total silver permeation through the skin. In conclusion, a straightforward solvent-casting technique can be used to successfully prepare strong AgNP-containing PLA microneedles capable of long-lasting antibacterial activity.

Abstract
In response to the issues of foodborne microbial contamination and carbon neutrality goals, sustainable antimicrobial food packaging (SAFP) composed of renewable or biodegradable biopolymer matrices with ecofriendly antimicrobial agents has emerged. SAFP offers longer effectiveness, wider coverage, more controllability, and better environmental performance. Analyzing SAFP information, including the release profile of each antimicrobial agent for each food, the interaction of each biomass matrix with each food, the material size, form, and preparation methods, and its service quality in real foods, is crucial. While encouraging reports exist, a comprehensive review summarizing these developments is lacking. Therefore, this review critically examines recent release-antimicrobial mechanisms, kinetics models, preparation methods, and key regulatory parameters for SAFPs based on slow- or controlled-release theory. Furthermore, it discusses fundamental physicochemical characteristics, effective concentrations, advantages, release approaches, and antimicrobial and preservative effects of various materials in food simulants or actual food. Lastly, inadequacies and future trends are explored, providing practical references to regulate the movement of active substances in different media, reduce the reliance on petrochemical-based materials, and advance food packaging and preservation technologies.

Abstract
In this study, composite nanofiber films comprising polyvinyl alcohol, wheat gluten, and glucose (PWG) were fabricated using electrospinning, followed by crosslinking via Maillard crosslinking. Various mass concentrations of ferulic acid (FA) were incorporated into PWG films. The results indicated that the average diameter of the FA-PWG films decreased from 449 nm to 331 nm as the concentration of FA increased, until reaching a concentration of 12%; after which, a significant increase in diameter was observed. The subsequent Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results suggested that FA was distributed in the sample films in an amorphous form through hydrogen and ester bonds. Additionally, release experiments and antimicrobial tests on the FA-PWG sample films showed the good controlled release of FA and excellent anti-Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus activity of this film. These findings all indicate that the FA-PWG nanofiber film is a potential candidate for active food packaging.

Abstract
Food loss and waste occur for many reasons, from crop processing to household leftovers. Even though some waste generation is unavoidable, a considerable amount is due to supply chain inefficiencies and damage during transport and handling. Packaging design and materials innovations represent real opportunities to reduce food waste within the supply chain. Besides, changes in people's lifestyles have increased the demand for high-quality, fresh, minimally processed, and ready-to-eat food products with extended shelf-life, that need to meet strict and constantly renewed food safety regulations. In this regard, accurate monitoring of food quality and spoilage is necessary to diminish both health hazards and food waste. Thus, this work provides an overview of the most recent advances in the investigation and development of food packaging materials and design with the aim to improve food chain sustainability. Enhanced barrier and surface properties as well as active materials for food conservation are reviewed. Likewise, the function, importance, current availability, and future trends of intelligent and smart packaging systems are presented, especially considering biobased sensor development by 3D printing technology. In addition, driving factors affecting fully biobased packaging design and materials development and production are discussed, considering byproducts and waste minimization and revalorization, recyclability, biodegradability, and other possible ends-of-life and their impact on product/package system sustainability.

Abstract
Plastic is a highly used material in various sectors. Due to its plentiful availability in the environment, microorganism surface contamination is a risk. The aim of this work is to achieve bactericidal capacity in plastics that reduces the microorganism’s colonization risk and, consequently, reduces the chances of having an infection with E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Using polylactic acid (PLA) as the polymeric matrix, mixtures in concentrations of metal additive of ions of silver (Ag) R148 and S254 in 1% and 2% have been studied and manufactured. The materials are developed on an industrial scale through a process that proceeds as follows: (I) a mixture of polymer and additive in a double-screw compounder to obtain the compound in different concentrations, (II) the manufacture of filaments with a single-screw extruder, (III) 3D printing parts. Therefore, materials are evaluated in the form of powder, pellets and printed pieces to ensure their antibacterial effectiveness throughout the manufacturing process. The results of the research show antibacterial effectiveness for E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes of metal additives and polymeric compounds for all manufacturing phases on an industrial scale, with the effectiveness for additive R148 predominating at a concentration of 2%, demonstrating its microbial efficacy on surfaces with potential application in medicine.

Abstract
Understanding interactions of bacteria with fiber-based packaging materials is fundamental for appropriate food packaging. We propose a laboratory model to evaluate microbial growth and survival in liquid media solely consisting of packaging materials with different fiber types. We evaluated food contaminating species (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus), two packaging material isolates and bacterial endospores for their growth abilities. Growth capacities differed substantially between the samples as well as between bacterial strains. Growth and survival were strongest for the packaging material entirely made of recycled fibers (secondary food packaging) with up to 10.8 log10 CFU/ml for the packaging isolates. Among the food contaminating species, B. cereus and E. coli could grow in the sample of entirely recycled fibers with maxima of 6.1 log10 and 8.6 log10 CFU/mL, respectively. Escherichia coli was the only species that was able to grow in bleached fresh fibers up to 7.0 log10 CFU/mL. Staphylococcus aureus perished in all samples and was undetectable after 1-6 days after inoculation, depending on the sample. The packaging material strains were isolated from recycled fibers and could grow only in samples containing recycled fibers, indicating an adaption to this environment. Spores germinated only in the completely recycled sample. Additionally, microbial digestion of cellulose and xylan might not be a crucial factor for growth. This is the first study describing bacterial growth in food packaging materials itself and proposing functionalization strategies toward active food packaging through pH-lowering.

Abstract
The food industry has been exploring the association of polymers with nanoparticles in packaging production, and active products are essential to increase the shelf life of food and avoid contamination. Our study developed starch-poly (adipate co-terephthalate butyl) films with silver nanoparticles produced with Fusarium oxysporum components (bio-AgNPs), intending to control foodborne pathogens. The bio-AgNPs showed activity against different Salmonella serotypes, including multidrug-resistant Salmonella Saint Paul and Salmonella Enteritidis, with minimum bactericidal concentrations ranging from 4.24 to 16.98 µg/mL. Biodegradable films with bio-AgNPs inhibited the growth of up to 106Salmonella isolates. Silver migration from the films to chicken was analyzed using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and the results showed migration values (12.94 mg/kg and 3.79 mg/kg) above the limits allowed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (0.05 mg/kg). Thus, it is necessary to improve the technique to avoid the migration of silver to chicken meat, since these concentrations can be harmful.

Abstract
The multifunctional packaging used for fresh food, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial packaging, can reduce food waste. In this work, a polylactic acid (PLA)-based composite film with antioxidant and antibacterial properties was prepared by using nano-zinc oxide (ZnONPs) and pomegranate peel extract (PEE) via the solvent-casting method. Different amounts of PEE (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 wt%) and 3 wt% ZnONPs were added to PLA to produce the active films. The results of various characterizations (SEM, XRD, etc.) showed that ZnONPs and PEE were uniformly dispersed in PLA film. Compared to PLA films, the PLA/ZnONPs/PEE films showed an increased UV barrier, water vapor permeability and elongation at break, and decreased transparency and tensile strength. In addition, the antioxidant activity of the composite film was evaluated based on DPPH and ABTS. The maximum DPPH and ABTS scavenging activities of PLA/ZnONPs/PEE were 96.2 ± 0.8% and 93.1 ± 0.5%. After 24 h, PLA/ZnONPs/PEE composite film inhibited 1.4 ± 0.05 Log CFU/mL of S. aureus and 8.2 ± 0.35 Log CFU/mL of E. coli, compared with the blank group. The results showed that PLA/ZnONPs/PEE composite film had good antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Therefore, the composite film showed great potential for food packaging.

Abstract
Cellulose, starch, chitosan, polylactic acid, and polyhydroxyalkanoates are seen as promising alternatives to conventional plastics in food packaging. However, the application of these biopolymers in the food packaging industry on a commercial scale is limited due to their poor performance and processing characteristics and high production cost. This review aims to provide an insight into the recent advances in research that address these limitations. Loading of nanofillers into polymer matrix could improve thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of biopolymers. Blending of biopolymers also offers the possibility of acquiring newer materials with desired characteristics. However, nanofillers tend to agglomerate when loaded above an optimum level in the polymer matrix. This article throws light on different methods adopted by researchers to achieve uniform dispersion of nanofillers in bionanocomposites. Furthermore, different processing methods available for converting biopolymers into different packaging forms are discussed. In addition, the potential utilization of agricultural, brewery, and industrial wastes as feedstock for the production of biopolymers, and integrated biorefinery concept that not only keep the total production cost of biopolymers low but are also environment-friendly, are discussed. Finally, future research prospects in this field and the possible contribution of biopolymers to sustainable development are presented. This review will certainly be helpful to researchers working on sustainable food packaging, and companies exploring pilot projects to scale up biopolymer production for industrial applications.

Abstract
A mixed oxide of titania-silica oxides (TixSiy oxides) was successfully prepared via the sol-gel technique from our previous work. The use of TixSiy oxides to improve the mechanical properties, photocatalytic efficiency, antibacterial property, permeability tests, and biodegradability of polylactic acid (PLA) was demonstrated in this study. The influence of different types and contents of TixSiy oxides on crystallization behavior, mechanical properties, thermal properties, and morphological properties was presented. In addition, the effect of using TixSiy oxides as a filler in PLA composites on these properties was compared with the use of titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and TiO2SiO2. Among the prepared biocomposite films, the PLA/TixSiy films showed an improvement in the tensile strength and Young's modulus (up to 5% and 31%, respectively) in comparison to neat PLA films. Photocatalytic efficiency to degrade methylene blue (MB), hydrolytic degradation, and in vitro degradation of PLA are significantly improved with the addition of TixSiy oxides. Furthermore, PLA with the addition of TixSiy oxides exhibited an excellent antibacterial effect on Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli or E. coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus or S. aureus), indicating the improved antimicrobial effectiveness of PLA composites. Importantly, up to 5% TixSiy loading could promote more PLA degradation via the water absorption ability of mixed oxides. According to the research results, the PLA composite films produced with TixSiy oxide were transparent, capable of screening UV radiation, and exhibited superior antibacterial efficacy, making them an excellent food packaging material.

Antimicrobial Activity of a Titanium Dioxide Additivated Thermoset. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
The transmission of pathogens via surfaces poses a major health problem, particularly in hospital environments. Antimicrobial surfaces can interrupt the path of spread, while photocatalytically active titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have emerged as an additive for creating antimicrobial materials. Irradiation of such particles with ultraviolet (UV) light leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species that can inactivate bacteria. The aim of this research was to incorporate TiO2 nanoparticles into a cellulose-reinforced melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) to obtain a photocatalytic antimicrobial thermoset, to be used, for example, for device enclosures or tableware. To this end, composites of MF with 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt% TiO2 were produced by ultrasonication and hot pressing. The incorporation of TiO2 resulted in a small decrease in tensile strength and little to no decrease in Shore D hardness, but a statistically significant decrease in the water contact angle. After 48 h of UV irradiation, a statistically significant decrease in tensile strength for samples with 0 and 10 wt% TiO2 was measured but with no statistically significant differences in Shore D hardness, although a statistically significant increase in surface hydrophilicity was measured. Accelerated methylene blue (MB) degradation was measured during a further 2.5 h of UV irradiation and MB concentrations of 12% or less could be achieved. Samples containing 0, 10, and 20 wt% TiO2 were investigated for long-term UV stability and antimicrobial activity. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed no changes in the chemical structure of the polymer, due to the incorporation of TiO2, but changes were detected after 500 h of irradiation, indicating material degradation. Specimens pre-irradiated with UV for 48 h showed a total reduction in Escherichia coli when exposed to UV irradiation.

Abstract
Bio-based thermoplastic natural rubber (TPNR) has recently received much attention due to its sustainability. TPNR based on natural rubber (NR), poly(lactic acid) (PLA), thermoplastic starch (TPS), and nano-precipitated calcium carbonate (NPCC) was fabricated using a twin-screw extruder with two different mixing sequences: MI (NPCC was first compounded with PLA) and MII (NPCC was initially compounded with TPS), and then converted to a sheet through cast sheet extrusion. A constant weight ratio of NR:PLA:TPS at 30:40:30 and varying concentrations of NPCC at 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt% were employed. The effects of NPCC and mixing sequence on the properties of NR/PLA/TPS/NPCC nanocomposites were investigated. The NR and TPS phases were dispersed in the PLA matrix. The nanocomposites loaded with a small amount of NPCC (0.5 and 1 wt%) showed increased tensile strength and Young's modulus. NPCC enhanced melt flowability, slightly improved the water vapor barrier property of the NR/PLA/TPS blend and caused decreased Tg, Tcc, and Tm of PLA in the nanocomposites. The PLA phase of the MI nanocomposites contained a higher amount of NPCC, consequently having greater PLA chain scission and poorer tensile properties than that of the MII nanocomposites.

Abstract
Nanomaterials, and in particular metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), have significantly contributed to the production of healthier, safer, and higher-quality foods and food packaging with special properties, such as greater mechanical strength, improved gas barrier capacity, increased water repellency and ability to inhibit microbial contamination, ensuring higher quality and longer product shelf life. MNPs can also be incorporated into chemical and biological sensors, enabling the design of fast and sensitive monitoring devices to assess food quality, from freshness to detection of allergens, food-borne pathogens or toxins. This review summarizes recent developments in the use of MNPs in the field of food science and technology. Additionally, a brief overview of MNP synthesis and characterization techniques is provided, as well as of the toxicity, biosafety and regulatory issues of MNPs in the agricultural, feed and food sectors.

Abstract
The greater awareness of non-renewable natural resources preservation needs has led to the development of more ecological high-performance polymeric materials with new functionalities. In this regard, biobased composites are considered interesting options, especially those obtained from agro-industrial wastes and by-products. These are low-cost raw materials derived from renewable sources, which are mostly biodegradable and would otherwise typically be discarded. In this review, recent and innovative academic studies on composites obtained from biopolymers, natural fillers and active agents, as well as green-synthesized nanoparticles are presented. An in-depth discussion of biobased composites structures, properties, manufacture, and life-cycle assessment (LCA) is provided along with a wide up-to-date overview of the most recent works in the field with appropriate references. Potential uses of biobased composites from agri-food residues such as active and intelligent food packaging, agricultural inputs, tissue engineering, among others are described, considering that the specific characteristics of these materials should match the proposed application.

Abstract
Effective interfacing of energy-efficient and biobased technologies presents an all-green route to achieving continuous circular production, utilization, and reproduction of plastics. Here, we show combined ultragreen chemical and biocatalytic depolymerization of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) using deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based low-energy microwave (MW) treatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. DESs are emerging as attractive sustainable catalysts due to their low toxicity, biodegradability, and unique biological compatibility. A green DES with triplet composition of choline chloride, glycerol, and urea was selected for PET depolymerization under MW irradiation without the use of additional depolymerization agents. Treatment conditions were studied using Box-Behnken design (BBD) with respect to MW irradiation time, MW power, and volume of DES. Under the optimized conditions of 20 mL DES volume, 260 W MW power, and 3 min MW time, a significant increase in the carbonyl index and PET percentage weight loss was observed. The combined MW-assisted DES depolymerization and enzymatic hydrolysis of the treated PET residue using LCC variant ICCG resulted in a total monomer conversion of ≈16% (w/w) in the form of terephthalic acid, mono-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, and bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate. Such high monomer conversion in comparison to enzymatically hydrolyzed virgin PET (1.56% (w/w)) could be attributed to the recognized depolymerization effect of the selected DES MW treatment process. Hence, MW-assisted DES technology proved itself as an efficient process for boosting the biodepolymerization of PET in an ultrafast and eco-friendly manner.

Abstract
Fruits and vegetables are highly perishable in nature. Several factors could affect the quality and shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Packaging materials (usually made up of polymers, proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, etc.,) are incorporated with essential oil (EO) which is high in antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds that can enhance the shelf life of fruits and vegetables without affecting their quality. However, the use of EO for postharvest preservation can alter the organoleptic properties of fresh produce. Exploiting synergistic interactions between several EOs, encapsulation of EO, or combining EO with non-thermal techniques such as irradiation, UV-C, cold plasma, ultrasound, etc., may help in preventing the spoilage of food products at lower concentrations without altering their organoleptic properties. This review aims to discuss the overview and current scenario of packaging film with EO for the preservation of fruit and vegetables. We have also discussed the spoilage mechanism of fruits and vegetables, mode of action of EOs, and the effect of EO with packaging film on antimicrobial and sensory properties of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract
Due to the global rise of the human population, one of the top-most challenges for poor and developing nations is to use the food produces safely and sustainably. In this regard, the storage of surplus food (and derived products) without loss of freshness, nutrient stability, shelf life, and their parallel efficient utilization will surely boost the food production sector. One of the best technologies that have emerged within the last twenty years with applications in the packaging of food and industrial materials is the use of green mode-based synthesized nanoparticles (NPs). These NPs are stable, advantageous as well as eco-friendly. Over the several years, numerous publications have confirmed that these NPs exert antibacterial, antioxidant, and antifungal activity against a plethora of pathogens. The storage in metal-based NPs (M-NPs) does not hamper the food properties and packaging efficiency. Additionally, these M-NPs help in the improvement of properties including freshness indicators, mechanical properties, antibacterial and water vapor permeability during food packaging. As a result, the nano-technological application facilitates a simple, alternate, interactive as well as reliable technology. It even provides positive feedback to food industries and packaging markets. Taken together, the current review paper is an attempt to highlight the M-NPs for prominent applications of antimicrobial properties, nanosensors, and food packaging of food items. Additionally, some comparative reports associated with M-NPs mechanism of action, risks, toxicity, and overall future perspectives have also been made.

Abstract
Currently, the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater by photocatalytic technology has attracted great attention. In this study, a new type of 3D printing material with photocatalytic activity was first prepared to print a water treatment equipment, and then a layer of silver-loaded TiO2 was coated on the equipment to further improve the catalytic degradation performance. The composite filaments with a diameter of 1.75 ± 0.05 mm were prepared by a melt blending method, which contained 10 wt% of modified TiO2 and 90 wt% of PLA. The silver-loaded TiO2 was uniformly coated on the equipment through a UV-curing method. The final results showed that those modified particles were uniformly dispersed in the PLA matrix. The stable printing composite filaments could be produced when 10 wt% TiO2 was added to the PLA matrix. Moreover, the photocatalytic degradation performance could be effectively improved after 5 wt% of silver loading was added. This novel facility showed good degradability of organic compounds in wastewater and bactericidal effect, which had potential applications for the drinking water treatment in the future.

Abstract
The study reports obtaining, characterization and evaluation of the preservation efficacy of nano-Ag-graphene-TiO2-polylactic acid (PLA) film during the storage of the curd cheese. The reusability of the active package was also evaluated. The mechanical resistance of the film was improved by 30% following the composite addition. Water vapour permeability decreased by 11-27% when the composite was incorporated into PLA in a mass percentage ranged between 0.5 and 3%. The highest fat permeability was obtained for PLA3% at 4 °C. The oxygen permeability of PLA3% is 24.6% lower than that of neat-PLA. PLA0.5% and PLA3% presented the highest antibacterial activity. PLA3% achieved the lowest solubility in food simulants at 4 °C compared to PLA and reference. The best active packages for curd storage were PLA0.5% and PLA3%. They showed also the lowest depreciation from the first to the second use. Their active role is kept 100% and 85% respectively, during the second use.

Abstract
This work demonstrates a novel method to deposit an antibacterial TiO2 thin film on a polymer substrate at room temperature. A combination of sol–gel and photon assistance was used in the experiment in order to avoid any thermal processes of thin film crystallization. The morphological photograph of samples indicated that the TiO2 thin film was perfectly coated on the PVC substrate without any cracks or pinholes. Chemical analysis by EDS and XPS reported that the thin film consisted of titanium (Ti), oxygen (O), and carbon (C). The Raman spectrum proved that the thin film was the anatase phase of TiO2 and, furthermore, that it was contaminated with carbon remaining from the photon assistance process. In addition, the optical band gap of the thin film was 3.35 eV, suggesting that the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 should occur under UV-A radiation. The bacteria viability assay was examined using E. coli and S. typhimurium as indicator strains under UV-A irradiation (365 nm) at different times. The data from OD and CFU count revealed that >97% of bacteria were killed after 60 min of irradiation, and the bacteria were completely killed at 120 min for E. coli and 180 min for S. typhimurium.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to develop antimicrobial bioplastics based on Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) with the addition of chitosan-ZnO, and chitosan-TiO2 to improve antimicrobial properties. METHODS For the preparation of the bioplastics, PLA with chitosan-ZnO or chitosan-TiO2 were used. The antimicrobial activity, mechanical and thermal properties, and water vapor permeability of bioplastics were evaluated. RESULTS PLA-chitosan-ZnO indicated a robust antimicrobial activity against bacteria such as Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, yeast such as Candida albicans, and fungus Aspergillus niger. No formation of new functional groups in PLA-chitosan-ZnO composites. In comparison to other PLA-based bioplastics, this bioplastic has medium tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation percentages with low barrier ability to water vapor. Chitosan-ZnO itself has a greater tensile strength compared to chitosan-TiO2. These two compounds undergo 2 stages of decomposition in a temperature range of 43 °C to 265 °C. The addition of PLA into chitosan-ZnO or chitosan TiO2 causes the bioplastics decomposed in a single stage. It also increases the decomposition temperature of bioplastic. However, compared to chitosan-ZnO or TiO2, the PLA-chitosan-ZnO or TiO2 bioplastics tend to produce a fragile composite indicating by decrease in their tensile strength. CONCLUSION In general, the addition of chitosan-ZnO into in PLA-based bioplastic produces better antimicrobial properties compared to TiO2.

Abstract
Poly lactic acid (PLA) is a compostable, as well as recyclable, sustainable, versatile and environmentally friendly alternative, because the monomer of PLA-lactide (LA) is extracted from natural sources. PLA's techno-functional properties are fairly similar to fossil-based polymers; however, in pristine state, its brittleness and delicacy during processing pose challenges to its potential exploitation in diverse food packaging applications. PLA is, therefore, re-engineered to improve its thermal, rheological, barrier and mechanical properties through nanoparticle (NP) reinforcement. This review summarises the studies on PLA-based nanocomposites (PLA NCs) developed by reinforcing inorganic metal/metallic oxide, graphite and silica-based nanoparticles (NPs) that exhibit remarkable improvement in terms of storage modulus, tensile strength, crystallinity, glass transition temperature (Tg) value, antimicrobial property and a decrease in water vapour and oxygen permeability when compared with the pristine PLA films. This review has also discussed the regulations around the use of metal oxide-based NPs in food packaging, PLA NC biodegradability and their applications in food systems. The industrial acceptance of NCs shows highly promising perspectives for the replacement of traditional petrochemical-based polymers currently being used for food packaging.

Abstract
An innovative antimicrobial technology for plastic surfaces is presented. We report the synthesis and scale-up of triangular silver nanoplates (TSNPs) and their integration into polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic acid (PLA) polymers through a solvent-casting technique. The TSNPs have a high geometric aspect ratio and strong local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) response, which provides an effective tool for monitoring their integrity during processing and integration with the biodegradable plastics. An aqueous-based seed-mediated chemical method was used to synthesize the TSNPs, and characterisation was carried out using TEM and UV (Ultraviolet)-VIS (Visible) spectroscopy to measure LSPR profiles. The UV-VIS spectra of silver seeds and TSNPs exhibited characteristic peaks at 395 and 600 nm respectively. Synthesized TSNPs were coated with thiol-terminated polyethylene glycol (SH-PEG) and transferred into chloroform in order to effect compatibility with PCL and PLA. TSNP/PCL and TSNP/PLA composite films were prepared by solvent casting. The morphological structure, thermal, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties of the TSNP-incorporated composite films were evaluated. Results showed the TSNP-treated films had a rougher surface than the bare films. Insignificant changes in the thermal properties of TSNP-treated films compared to bare ones were also observed, which indicated the thermal stability of the composite films. The tensile strength and antimicrobial properties of the composite films were increased after TSNP incorporation. TSNP/PCL and TSNP/PLA films exhibited improved antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with antimicrobial effect (AE) values ranging between 0.10 and 0.35. The obtained results and demonstrated TSNP production scalability validate the TSNP treated PCL and PLA films as a composite material with desirable antimicrobial effect for wide-ranging surface applications.

Abstract
In this literature review, the antipathogenic properties and contact-mediated antibacterial and antiviral performance of copper cold spray surfaces are assessed and compared with alternative antimicrobial materials that are able to kill and/or inactivate infectious agents via direct contact. Discussion is also provided concerning the suitability of copper cold spray material consolidations as biocidal and viricidal surfaces that retain long-term functionality as a preventative measure against fomite transmission of pathogenic agents and hospital-acquired infections from contaminated high-touch surfaces. Numerable alternative antimicrobial coatings and surfaces that do not rely upon the oligodynamic action of copper are detailed. Given the ongoing need for recognition of said alternative antimicrobial materials by authoritative agencies, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the relevant literature on non-copper-based antipathogenic coatings and surfaces are then described. Furthermore, a wide-ranging take on antipathogenic copper cold spray coatings are provided and consideration is given to the distinctive grain-boundary mediated copper ion diffusion pathways found in optimizable, highly deformed, copper cold spray material consolidations that enable pathogen inactivation on surfaces from direct contact. To conclude this literature review, analysis of how copper cold spray coatings can be employed as a preventative measure against COVID-19 was also presented in light of on-going debates surrounding SARS-CoV-2's non-primary, but non-negligible, secondary transmission pathway, and also presented in conjunction with the inevitability that future pathogens, which will be responsible for forthcoming global pandemics, may spread even more readily via fomite pathways too.

Abstract
Chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) based on their different derivatives were proposed as antioxidant and antimicrobial additives for active bioplastic packaging. Chitosan was modified with polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA), stearyl methacrylate (SMA) and deoxycholic acid (DC) using radiation-induced graft polymerization and chemical conjugation. The modified CSNPs-g-pPEGMA, CSNPs-g-pSMA and CSNPs-DC self-assembled into nanoparticles with the size in the range of 25-60 nm. The CSNPs-DC derivative has superior antioxidant activity and the CSNPs-g-pSMA derivative exhibited outstanding antibacterial activity against growth of E.coli (95.33 %). All modified CSNPs showed their capacities to inhibit S.aureus bacterial growth (>98 %). PLA packaging films containing CSNPs-g-pSMA inhibited the growth of natural microorganism on bread slices. Different chemical functions of the CSNPs derivatives provided different gas permeability and mechanical properties of the PLA films. The CSNPs derivatives would be promising antioxidant and antimicrobial additives for bioplastics to be further used as bio-based active food packaging.

Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) films containing 1 wt % and 3 wt % of lignin nanoparticles (pristine (LNP), chemically modified with citric acid (caLNP) and acetylated (aLNP)) were prepared by extrusion and characterized in terms of their overall performance as food packaging materials. Morphological, mechanical, thermal, UV–Vis barrier, antioxidant and antibacterial properties were assayed; appropriate migration values in food simulants and disintegration in simulated composting conditions were also verified. The results obtained indicated that all lignin nanoparticles succeeded in conferring UV-blocking, antioxidant and antibacterial properties to the PLA films, especially at the higher filler loadings assayed. Chemical modification of the fillers partially reduced the UV protection and the antioxidant properties of the resulting composites, but it induced better nanoparticles dispersion, reduced aggregates size, enhanced ductility and improved aesthetic quality of the films through reduction of the characteristic dark color of lignin. Migration tests and disintegration assays of the nanocomposites in simulated composting conditions indicated that, irrespectively of their formulation, the multifunctional nanocomposite films prepared behaved similarly to neat PLA.

Abstract
This review presents a perspective on the research trends and solutions from recent years in the domain of antimicrobial packaging materials. The antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities can be induced by the main polymer used for packaging or by addition of various components from natural agents (bacteriocins, essential oils, natural extracts, etc.) to synthetic agents, both organic and inorganic (Ag, ZnO, TiO2 nanoparticles, synthetic antibiotics etc.). The general trend for the packaging evolution is from the inert and polluting plastic waste to the antimicrobial active, biodegradable or edible, biopolymer film packaging. Like in many domains this transition is an evolution rather than a revolution, and changes are coming in small steps. Changing the public perception and industry focus on the antimicrobial packaging solutions will enhance the shelf life and provide healthier food, thus diminishing the waste of agricultural resources, but will also reduce the plastic pollution generated by humankind as most new polymers used for packaging are from renewable sources and are biodegradable. Polysaccharides (like chitosan, cellulose and derivatives, starch etc.), lipids and proteins (from vegetal or animal origin), and some other specific biopolymers (like polylactic acid or polyvinyl alcohol) have been used as single component or in blends to obtain antimicrobial packaging materials. Where the package's antimicrobial and antioxidant activities need a larger spectrum or a boost, certain active substances are embedded, encapsulated, coated, grafted into or onto the polymeric film. This review tries to cover the latest updates on the antimicrobial packaging, edible or not, using as support traditional and new polymers, with emphasis on natural compounds.

Abstract
To eliminate the microbial infection from an injury site, various modalities have been developed such as dressings and human skin substitutes. However, the high amount of reactive oxygen species, microbial infection, and damaging extracellular matrix remain as the main challenges for the wound healing process. In this study, for the first time, green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Teucrium polium extract were embedded in poly lactic acid/poly ethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) film to provide absorbable wound dressing, with antioxidant and antibacterial features. The physicochemical analysis demonstrated, production of AgNPs with size approximately 32.2 nm and confirmed the presence of phytoconstituents on their surface. The antibacterial assessments exhibited a concentration-dependent sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa toward biosynthesized AgNPs, which showed a suitable safety profile in human macrophage cells. Furthermore, oxidant scavenging assays demonstrated exploitation of plant extract as a reducing agent, endows antioxidant activity to biogenic AgNPs. The formation of PLA/PEG nanofilm and entrapment of AgNPs into their matrix were clearly confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. More importantly, antibacterial examination demonstrated that the introduction of biogenic AgNPs into PLA/PEG nanofibers led to complete growth inhibition of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. In summary, the simultaneous antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity of the novel biogenic AgNPs/PLA/PEG nanofilm showed its potential for application as wound dressing.

Development of Bionanocomposites Based on PLA, Collagen and AgNPs and Characterization of Their Stability and In Vitro Biocompatibility. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2020. Abstract
Bionanocomposites including poly(lactic acid) (PLA), collagen, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared as biocompatible and stable films. Thermal properties of the PLA-based bionanocomposites indicated an increase in the crystallinity of PLA plasticized due to a small quantity of AgNPs. The results on the stability study indicate the promising contribution of the AgNPs on the durability of PLA-based bionanocomposites. In vitro biocompatibility conducted on the mouse fibroblast cell line NCTC, clone 929, using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay showed high values of cell viability (>80%) after cell cultivation in the presence of bionanocomposite formulations for 48 h, while the percentages of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) released in the culture medium were reduced (<15%), indicating no damages of the cell membranes. In addition, cell cycle analysis assessed by flow cytometry indicated that all tested bionanocomposites did not affect cell proliferation and maintained the normal growth rate of cells. The obtained results recommend the potential use of PLA-based bionanocomposites for biomedical coatings.
