Abstract
Today, the world is facing a great problem of plastic pollution due to its non-degradable nature. Alternatively, polylactic acid (PLA), a bio-based and biodegradable polymer, is emerging as a promising substitute for conventional, non-biodegradable plastics. However, its high cost, limited properties, and single functionality hinder its wide application. Lignin, a natural and sustainable biomass derived from plant cell walls, has become a promising filler for PLA. The integration of lignin into PLA composites holds the potential to realize the trifecta of low cost, high performance, and multifunctional properties while maintaining the principles of biodegradation and sustainability. However, the poor compatibility between PLA and lignin severely affects their overall performance, which creates a major challenge for the development of PLA/lignin composites. In recent years, a significant of advancements have been achieved in addressing this challenge. In this review, we provide a systematic insight into PLA/lignin composites, focusing on numerous compatibilization strategies including physical addition and chemical modification, and the progress on the structural characteristics, synthesis methods, performance improvements brought by lignin, and multiple applications. Finally, the existing problems and developmental direction of PLA/lignin composites are discussed. We believe that this review can be useful for future research prospects and industrial applications.

Abstract
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA) are among the polymers used in the food industry. In this study, crude extracts of Dunaliella salina were used to treat the surface of 3D printed materials studied, aiming to provide them with an anti-adhesive property against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The hydrophobicity of treated and untreated surfaces was characterized using the contact angle method. Furthermore, the adhesive behavior of P. aeruginosa toward the substrata surfaces was also studied theoretically and experimentally. The results showed that the untreated PLA was hydrophobic, while the untreated PET was hydrophilic. It was also found that the treated materials became hydrophilic and electron-donating. The total energy of adhesion revealed that P. aeruginosa adhesion was theoretically favorable on untreated materials, while it was unfavorable on treated ones. Moreover, the experimental data proved that the adhesion to untreated substrata was obtained, while there was complete inhibition of adhesion to treated surfaces.

Abstract
Oil-in-water (O/W) high internal phase (HIP) emulsion was prepared to investigate its effects on the physicochemical properties and antimicrobial properties of soy protein isolate (SPI)-based films. The particle size and migration degree of oil droplets in the SPI film-forming solution with HIP emulsion and the films were lower than those with conventional O/W emulsion or oil. The SPI-based emulsion films with HIP emulsion containing 30 % oil had the lowest water vapor permeability (1.15 × 10-10 g·m-1·s-1·Pa-1), glass transition temperature (40.93 °C) and tensile strength (4.47 MPa), and the highest transparency value (12.87) and elongation at break (160.83 %). The antimicrobial test of the SPI-based emulsion films loaded with thymol showed that the thymol encapsulation efficiency, sustained release effect, and growth inhibition effect on microbes were higher for the films with HIP emulsion than those for the films with O/W emulsion or oil.

Abstract
Enhancing food preservation and safety using environmentally friendly techniques is urgently needed. The aim of this study was to develop food packaging films using biodegradable poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) as biopolymer and carvacrol (CV) essential oil as an antioxidant/antibacterial agent for the replacement of chemical additives. CV was adsorbed onto natural zeolite (NZ) via a new vacuum adsorption method. The novel nanohybrid CV@NZ with a high CV content contained 61.7%wt. CV. Pure NZ and the CV@NZ nanohybrid were successfully dispersed in a PLA/triethyl citrate (TEC) matrix via a melt extrusion process to obtain PLA/TEC/xCV@NZ and PLA/TEC/xNZ nanocomposite films with 5, 10, and 15%wt CV@NZ or pure NZ content. The optimum resulting film PLA/TEC/10CV@NZ contained 10%wt. CV@NZ and exhibited self-healable properties, 22% higher tensile strength, 40% higher elongation at break, 45% higher water barrier, and 40% higher oxygen barrier than the pure PLA/TEC matrix. This film also had a high CV release content, high CV control release rate as well as 2.15 mg/L half maximal effective concentration (EC50) and 0.27 mm and 0.16 mm inhibition zones against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica serovar Typhimurium, respectively. This film not only succeeded in extending the shelf life of fresh minced pork, as shown by the total viable count measurements in four days but also prevented the lipid oxidation of fresh minced pork and provided higher nutritional values of the minced meat, as revealed by the heme iron content determination. It also had much better and acceptable sensory characteristics than the commercial packaging paper.

Abstract
A quantitative analysis of the morphology, as well as an analysis of the distribution of components and surface/interfacial properties in poly(lactic acid)(PLA) InegoTM 3251D, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) Capa 6800 and nano-silica (SiO2) Aerosil®200 blends, was conducted in this research. The study aimed to improve the understanding of how PLA, PCL, and nano-SiO2 interact, resulting in the specific morphology and surface properties of the blends. Samples were produced by varying the concentration of all three components. They were analyzed using SEM, EDS mapping, water contact angle measurements, surface free energy calculation, adhesion parameter measurements, and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. The results showed that the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles led to an increase in the contact angle of water, making the surface more hydrophobic. SEM images of the blends showed that increasing the PCL content reduced the size of spherical PCL elements in the blends. FTIR-ATR analysis showed that SiO2 nanoparticles influenced the structure ordering of PLA in the blend with equal portions of PLA and PCL. In the samples with a higher PCL content, the spherical elements present in the samples with a higher PLA/PCL ratio have been reduced, indicating better interactions at the interface between PLA, PCL, and SiO2. SEM-EDS mapping of the PLA/PCL 100/0 blend surfaces revealed the presence of SiO2 clusters and the silicon (Si) concentration reaching up to ten times higher than the nominal concentration of SiO2. However, with the addition of 3% SiO2 to the blend containing PCL, the structure became more granular. Specifically, Si protrusions in the sample PLA/PCL 90/10 with 3% SiO2 displayed 29.25% of Si, and the sample PLA/PCL 70/30 with 3% SiO2 displayed an average of 10.61% of Si at the protrusion locations. The results confirmed the affinity of SiO2 to be encapsulated by PCL. A better understanding of the interactions between the materials in the presented blends and the quantitative analysis of their morphology could improve the understanding of their properties and allow the optimization of their application for different purposes.

Abstract
Increasing concerns about global food safety and security demands innovative solutions, particularly in food packaging technologies. This review paper investigates the advanced integration of natural colourimetric sensors with biopolymer-based packaging materials, with a focus on developments over the past 5 years. These sensors change colour in response to environmental stimuli such as oxygen, temperature, pH and relative humidity, intuitively indicating food freshness and safety. The paper emphasizes the recent advancements in using natural colourants, such as alizarin, anthocyanins, betacyanins, chlorophyll, curcumin and shikonin. When combined with either natural or synthetic biopolymers, these colourants contribute to a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to food packaging. Such technological advances could notably decrease the incidence of foodborne illnesses by signaling potential spoilage or contamination, while also addressing food wastage by providing clear indications of edibility. Although challenges remain in sensor longevity and widespread adoption, the prospects for biopolymer-based food packaging with embedded natural colourimetric sensors are promising.

Abstract
This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in polylactic acid (PLA) extrusion, emphasizing its applications in food packaging. PLA has witnessed a significant rise in demand, particularly within the food packaging sector. A notable increase in research publications has been observed in recent years, exploring the extrusion of PLA and PLA-based composite films. In comparison to conventional techniques such as solvent casting, extrusion offers advantages in scalability and environmental sustainability, especially for industrial-scale production. The benefits of this method include faster drying times, enhanced flexibility, consistent film thickness, and less structural defects. Extensive research has focused on the effect of various PLA blends on film properties, including flexibility, elongation, and barrier properties against water vapour and gases. Furthermore, the incorporation of compounds such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, and natural pigments has enabled the development of active and intelligent PLA-based packaging. This article summarizes the types of additives employed to enhance the physicochemical properties of extruded PLA and film performance. Additionally, this article explores the diverse applications of extruded PLA in active and intelligent packaging for various food products.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to prepare biocomposites through the solution casting method followed by compression moulding in which bacterial cellulose (BC) deposited flax fabric (FF) produced through fermentation is coated with minimal amount of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). Biocomposites incorporated with 60 % of PLA or PHB (% w/w) show enhanced tensile strength. Cross-sectional morphology showed good superficial interaction of these biopolymers with fibres of FF thereby filling up the gaps present between the fibres. The tensile strength of biocomposites at 60 % PLA and 60 % PHB improved from 37.97 MPa (i.e., BC deposited FF produced in presence of honey) to 67.17 MPa and 56.26 MPa, respectively. Further, 0.25 % of nalidixic acid (NA) (% w/w) and 6 % of oleic acid (OA) (% w/w) incorporation into the biocomposites imparted prolonged antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The in vitro cytotoxicity of biocomposites was determined using L929 mouse fibroblast cells. The 3-(4,5-cime- thylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide cytotoxicity tests showed that the PHB derived biocomposites along with antibacterial compounds in it were non-toxic. In vitro degradation of biocomposites was measured for up to 8 weeks in the mimicked physiological environment that showed a gradual rate of degradation over the period.

Abstract
This study is focused on investigating the rheological and mechanical properties of highly oxidized graphite (GrO) incorporated into a poly (lactic acid) (PLA) matrix composite. Furthermore, the samples were annealed at 110 °C for 30 min to study whether GrO concentration has an effect on the elastic modulus (E') after treatment. The incorporation of GrO into PLA was carried out by employing an internal mixing chamber at 190 °C. Six formulations were prepared with GrO concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 3 wt%. The thermal stability, thermomechanical behavior, and crystallinity of the composites were evaluated utilizing thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and differential scanning calorimetry DSC, respectively. The thermal stability (according to Tmax) of the PLA/GrO composites did not change substantially compared with PLA. According to DSC, the crystallinity increased until the GrO concentration reached 1 wt% and afterward decreased. Regarding the heat treatment of the PLA/GrO composites, the E' increased (by two orders of magnitude) at 80 °C with the maximum value achieved at 1 wt% GrO compared with the non-heat-treated composites.

Abstract
In diverse biomedical and other applications of polylactide (PLA), its bacterial contamination and colonization are unwanted. For this reason, this biodegradable polymer is often combined with antibacterial agents or fillers. Here, we present a new solution of this kind. Through the process of simple solvent casting, we developed homogeneous composite films from 28 ± 5 nm oleic-acid-capped gallium nanoparticles (Ga NPs) and poly(L-lactide) and characterized their detailed morphology, crystallinity, aqueous wettability, optical and thermal properties. The addition of Ga NPs decreased the ultraviolet transparency of the films, increased their hydrophobicity, and enhanced the PLA structural ordering during solvent casting. Albeit, above the glass transition, there is an interplay of heterogeneous nucleation and retarded chain mobility through interfacial interactions. The gallium content varied from 0.08 to 2.4 weight %, and films with at least 0.8% Ga inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 in contact, while 2.4% Ga enhanced the effect of the films to be bactericidal. This contact action was a result of unwrapping the top film layer under biological conditions and the consequent bacterial contact with the exposed Ga NPs on the surface. All the tested films showed good cytocompatibility with human HaCaT keratinocytes and enabled the adhesion and growth of these skin cells on their surfaces when coated with poly(L-lysine). These properties make the nanogallium-polyl(L-lactide) composite a promising new polymer-based material worthy of further investigation and development for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
This study investigates the suitability of using caffeine-treated and untreated black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) wood as a polylactide filler. Composites containing 10%, 20%, and 30% filler were investigated in terms of increasing the nucleating ability of polylactide, as well as enhancing its resistance to microorganisms. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed that the addition of caffeine-treated wood significantly altered the crystallization behavior of the polymer matrix, increasing its crystallization temperature and degree of crystallinity. Polarized light microscopic observations revealed that only the caffeine-treated wood induced the formation of transcrystalline structures in the polylactide. Incorporation of the modified filler into the matrix was also responsible for changes in the thermal stability and decreased hydrophilicity of the material. Most importantly, the use of black cherry wood treated with caffeine imparted antifungal properties to the polylactide-based composite, effectively reducing growth of Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium culmorum, Alternaria alternata, and Trichoderma viride. For the first time, it was reported that treatment of wood with a caffeine compound of natural origin alters the supermolecular structure, nucleating abilities, and imparts antifungal properties of polylactide/wood composites, providing promising insights into the structure-properties relationship of such composites.

Abstract
Disposable surgical gowns are usually made from petroleum-based synthetic fibers that do not naturally decompose, impacting the environment. A promising approach to diminish the environmental impact of disposable gowns involves utilizing natural fibers and/or bio-based synthetic fibers. In this study, composite webs from polylactic acid (PLA) bicomponent fiber and natural fibers, cattail and kapok fibers, were prepared using the hot press method. Only the sheath region of the PLA bicomponent fiber melted, acting as an adhesive that enhanced the strength and reduced the thickness of the composite web compared with its state before hot pressing. The mechanical and physical properties of these composite webs were evaluated. Composite webs created from kapok fibers displayed a creamy yellowish-white color, while those made from cattail fibers showed a light yellowish-brown color. Additionally, the addition of natural fibers endowed the composite webs with hydrophobic properties. The maximum natural fiber content, at a ratio of 30:70 (natural fiber to PLA fiber), can be incorporated while maintaining proper water vapor permeability and mechanical properties. This nonwoven material presents an alternative with the potential to replace petroleum-based surgical gowns.

Abstract
The biodegradable activity antibacterial materials have been widely applied on food preservation because they not only protect foods from pathogenic attacks but also relieve environmental pollution. Biodegradable melt-blown nonwovens (MB) have several advantages over the other materials in terms of a simpler and more environmentally friendly fabrication process, higher specific surface area, and lower cost. Herein, polylactic acid (PLA) MB is first modified by polydopamine (PDA) to activate the surface. Then, chitosan (CS) and cinnamon essential oil (CEO) are used to decorate the surface of the modified PLA MB via a simple one-pot method to prepare CEO/CS@PLA MB with different CEO contents. Compared with PLA MB, CEO/CS@PLA MB had a rougher surface and larger average fiber diameter, while the average pore diameter and air permeability reduced. The input of CEO led to a decrease in the tensile strength of CEO/CS@PLA MB and an obvious increase in the elongation at break. The combination of CS and CEO shows excellent synergistic antibacterial effect. The antibacterial efficiencies of CEO/CS@PLA MB against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus enhance with the increase of the CEO content. When the weight ratio of CS to CEO is 1:2, the antibacterial efficiencies of CEO2/CS@PLA MB against E. coli and S. aureus are 99.98 and 99.99%, respectively. When being applied to the preservation of fresh strawberry, CEO2/CS@PLA MB can effectively inhibit the microbial growth in strawberry and reduce decay, which extends the shelf time of strawberry.

Abstract
Packaging is fundamental to maintaining the quality of food, but its contribution with a negative footprint to the environment must be completely changed worldwide to reduce pollution and climate change. Innovative and sustainable packaging and new strategies of reutilization are necessary to reduce plastic waste accumulation, maintain food quality and safety, and reduce food losses and waste. The purpose of this chapter is to present innovations in food packaging for a sustainable and circular economy. First, to present the eco-design packaging approach as well as new strategies for recycled or recyclable materials in food packaging. Second, to show current trends in new packaging materials developed from the use of agro-industrial wastes as well as new methods of production, including 3D/4D printing, electrostatic spinning, and the use of nanomaterials.
