Applications of nanotechnology in orthodontics: a comprehensive review of tooth movement, antibacterial properties, friction reduction, and corrosion resistance

Nanotechnology has contributed important innovations to medicine and dentistry, and has also offered various applications to the field of orthodontics. Intraoral appliances must function in a complex environment that includes digestive enzymes, a diverse microbiome, mechanical stress, and fluctuations of pH and temperature. Nanotechnology can improve the performance of orthodontic brackets and archwires by reducing friction, inhibiting bacterial growth and biofilm formation, optimizing tooth remineralization, improving corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of metal substrates, and accelerating or decelerating orthodontic tooth movement through the application of novel nanocoatings, nanoelectromechanical systems, and nanorobots. This comprehensive review systematically explores the orthodontic applications of nanotechnology, particularly its impacts on tooth movement, antibacterial activity, friction reduction, and corrosion resistance. A search across PubMed, the Web of Science Core Collection, and Google Scholar yielded 261 papers, of which 28 met our inclusion criteria. These selected studies highlight the significant benefits of nanotechnology in orthodontic devices. Recent clinical trials demonstrate that advancements brought by nanotechnology may facilitate the future delivery of more effective and comfortable orthodontic care.

Effects of chronic CuNPs treatment followed by termination for two spermatogenic cycles in the testicular functions of mice

The present study investigated the possible effects of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) after discontinuing treatment on testicular activity in a mouse model. The male mice were given continuous CuNPs treatment for 70 days and left untreated for 70 days. The results show that even after the discontinuation of CuNPs treatment, the testicular impairment was persistent till 140 days at a higher dose (200 mg/kg group). The spermatogenesis, sperm parameters, proliferation and antioxidant status were suppressed in the higher dose groups. However, these effects were also observed at moderate levels in the other CuNPs treated groups, such as at 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg. The apoptosis was stimulated at a higher dose compared to the other groups. The testosterone, LH levels and AR expression were suppressed in all the CuNPs treated groups, along with slight elevation in the estrogen levels and up-regulated ERβ expression. The fertility data also showed a decline in all CuNPs treated groups with the lowest litter size in the 200 mg/kg treated group. Despite testis, epididymis and accessory sex organs like prostate, seminal vesicle, and vas deferens, histoarchitecture also showed impairment. This is the first report on how CuNPs affect the male reproductive system in mice even after treatment was terminated. The current study also demonstrated possible negative effects on male reproductive function that might last for longer at higher dosages of chronic CuNPs exposure even after termination.

Novel antimicrobial applications of copper oxide nanoparticles after combination with tissue conditioner used in complete prostheses

BACKGROUND

Tissue conditioners are used for treating and improving the tissues supporting complete dentures. On the other hand, recent advances in nanotechnology have revolutionized various fields of science, including dentistry. The present study aimed to investigate novel antimicrobial applications of copper oxide nanoparticle-based tissue conditioner used in complete prostheses.

METHODS

The present experimental study included 126 tissue conditioner samples with different concentrations of copper oxide nanoparticles (20%, 10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, 0.625%, and 0% w/w). The samples were incubated with Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans in 24-well plates for 24 h. Then, samples from the wells were re-incubated for 24 h, and the microorganisms were counted.

RESULTS

The culture media containing E. faecalis and P. aeruginosa showed significantly different growth between different nanoparticle concentrations following 24 h (P < 0.001), showing a reduction in bacterial growth with increased nanoparticle concentration. Both bacteria did not show any growth at the 20% concentration. However, C. albicans showed significant differences in growth between different nanoparticle concentrations following 48 h (P < 0.001), showing a reduction in growth with increased nanoparticle concentration. Also, the least growth was observed at the 20% concentration.

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, the CuO nanoparticles were prepared using a green synthesis methon in the suitable sizes. Moreover, the tissue conditioners containing CuO nanoparticles showed acceptable antimicrobial properties against E. faecalis, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans.

Integration of local knowledge in the secondary school chemistry curriculum - A few examples of ethno-chemistry from Zambia

Before formally introducing chemistry in schools, Africans practiced it as ethnochemistry as they lived in their ethnic groupings. To a large extent, it may be true for other ethnic groups and communities across the globe as well. This study aimed to document a drop from the ocean of ethnochemistry knowledge that people in Zambia practiced in the past and modern times to use such ethnochemistry knowledge to teach chemistry in ethnically responsive ways. Further, this study sought to raise the profile of indigenous cultural knowledge in the globalized world dominated by modernity. Ethnography research design was used including unstructured interviews for data collection. This study purposively selected twenty (20) research participants using snowball sampling. Results show that many relevant ethnochemistry practices in Zambia can be used to grow the national economy, enrich the teaching of Secondary School Chemistry to ethnically diverse students, and generate secondary school students' interest and better familiarity with Chemistry.

An Investigation into the Larvicidal Activity of Biologically Synthesized Silver and Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Against Mosquito Larvae

This study is primarily focused on the synthesis of silver and copper oxide nanoparticles utilizing the extract of Ipomoea staphylina plant and their larvicidal activity against specific larvae. Notably, Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti are significant disease vectors responsible for transmitting diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya (Anopheles stephensi), and dengue and Zika (Aedes aegypti). These mosquitoes have a substantial impact on urban areas, influencing disease transmission dynamics. In an effort to control these larvae, we have pursued the synthesis of a herbal-based nanomedicine derived from I. staphylina, a valuable herb in traditional medicine. Our successful synthesis of silver and CuO nanoparticles followed environmentally sustainable green chemistry methodologies. The I. staphylina plant extract played a dual role as a reducing agent and dopant, aligning with principles of sustainability. We employed X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to validate the nanoparticle structure and size, while field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed well-defined nanostructures. Elemental composition was determined through energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and UV-visible spectroscopy provided insights into the bandgap energy (3.15 eV for silver, 1.2 eV for CuO nanoparticles). These nanoparticles exhibited robust larvicidal activity, with CuO nanoparticles surpassing silver nanoparticles in terms of LC50 and LC90 values. Moreover, the developmental toxicity of CuO and Ag NPs was evaluated in zebrafish embryos as part of non-target eco-toxicological studies conducted in a standard laboratory environment. These findings underscore the potential utility of these nanoparticles as highly effective and environmentally friendly natural pesticides, offering cost-effectiveness and ecological benefits.

Adjuvant Novel Nanocarrier-Based Targeted Therapy for Lung Cancer

Lung cancer has the lowest survival rate due to its late-stage diagnosis, poor prognosis, and intra-tumoral heterogeneity. These factors decrease the effectiveness of treatment. They release chemokines and cytokines from the tumor microenvironment (TME). To improve the effectiveness of treatment, researchers emphasize personalized adjuvant therapies along with conventional ones. Targeted chemotherapeutic drug delivery systems and specific pathway-blocking agents using nanocarriers are a few of them. This study explored the nanocarrier roles and strategies to improve the treatment profile's effectiveness by striving for TME. A biofunctionalized nanocarrier stimulates biosystem interaction, cellular uptake, immune system escape, and vascular changes for penetration into the TME. Inorganic metal compounds scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) through their photothermal effect. Stroma, hypoxia, pH, and immunity-modulating agents conjugated or modified nanocarriers co-administered with pathway-blocking or condition-modulating agents can regulate extracellular matrix (ECM), Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF),Tyro3, Axl, and Mertk receptors (TAM) regulation, regulatory T-cell (Treg) inhibition, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) inhibition. Again, biomimetic conjugation or the surface modification of nanocarriers using ligands can enhance active targeting efficacy by bypassing the TME. A carrier system with biofunctionalized inorganic metal compounds and organic compound complex-loaded drugs is convenient for NSCLC-targeted therapy.

Eco-friendly approach for the fabrication of biо copper based superhydrophobic coating on steel metal and its corrosion resistance evaluation

This study presents an eco-friendly approach for constructing superhydrophobic (S.H.) coatings on steel surfaces. The biо Сu nanoparticles are synthesized using a biоgenic process. Two types of coatings, Ni-Ѕ.Α and Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α, were developed and characterized. The EDX results confirm the successful fabrication of two distinct coatings on the steel substrate: one involving the modification of nickel with stearic acid, Ni-Ѕ.Α, and the other involving the modification of nickel with both bio-Cu and stearic acid, Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α. The SEM results revealed that the S.H. coats exhibit circular microstructures which contribute to the surface roughness. The contact angles of water droplets on the Ni-Ѕ.Α and Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α coatings were measured at 158° ± 0.9° and 162° ± 1.1°, respectively. Chemical stability tests demonstrated that the Ni-Ѕ.Α coating maintains its S.H. behaviour in a pH range of 3-11, whereas the Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α coating exhibits excellent chemical stability in a broader range of pH (1-13). The coating's mechanical stability was evaluated through abrasion tests. The Ni-Ѕ.Α coating retained its S.H. properties even after an abrasion length equal 1100 mm, while the Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α coating maintained its S.H. behaviour till an abrasion length equal 1900 mm. The corrosion behavior and protective properties of the S.H. coatings were studied via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) techniques. The PDP and EIS findings demonstrated that both Ni-Ѕ.Α and Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α coatings significantly reduced the corrosion rate compared to uncoated steel.

Copper Materials for Caries Management: A Scoping Review

This study comprehensively reviewed the types, properties and potential applications of copper materials for caries management. Two researchers independently searched English publications using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. They screened the titles and abstracts of publications presenting original studies for review. They included 34 publications on copper materials, which were categorized as copper and copper alloy materials (13/34, 38%), copper salt materials (13/34, 38%) and copper oxide materials (8/34, 24%). All reported copper materials inhibited the growth of cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. The materials could be doped into topical agents, restorative fillers, dental adhesives, drinking water, dental implants, orthodontic appliances, mouthwash and sugar. Most publications (29/34, 83%) were laboratory studies, five (5/34, 14%) were animal studies and only one paper (1/34, 3%) was clinical research. In conclusion, copper and copper alloy materials, copper salt materials and copper oxide materials have an antimicrobial property that inhibits cariogenic bacteria and Candida albicans. These copper materials may be incorporated into dental materials and even drinking water and sugar for caries prevention. Most publications are laboratory studies. Further clinical studies are essential to validate the effectiveness of copper materials in caries prevention.

Emerging Applications of Nanotechnology in Dentistry

Dentistry is a branch of healthcare where nanobiotechnology is reverberating in multiple ways to produce beneficial outcomes. The purpose of this review is to bring into the awareness of the readers the various practical dimensions of the nano-dental complex (nanodentistry) in healthcare and how novelties linked with the field are revolutionizing dentistry. A methodological approach was adopted to collect the latest data on nanotechnology and dentistry from sources, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and official websites like the WHO. Nanodentistry is an emerging field in dentistry that involves the use of nanomaterials, nanorobots, and nanotechnology to diagnose, treat, and prevent dental diseases. The results summarize the descriptive analyses of the uses of nanodentistry within orthodontics, preventive dentistry, prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, periodontics, dental surgeries, dental restoration technologies, and other areas of dentistry. The future directions of nano-industries and nano-healthcare have been included to link them with the oral healthcare sector, treatment plans, and improved medical services which could be explored in the future for advanced healthcare regulation. The major limitations to the use of dental nanoproducts are their cost-effectiveness and accessibility, especially in financially constrained countries. These data will help the readers to experience a detailed analysis and comprehensive covering of the diverse achievements of nanodentistry with past analyses, present scenarios, and future implications.

Cytotoxicity, Antimicrobial, Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Activity of Camellia Sinensis and Citrus Mediated Copper Oxide Nanoparticle-An In vitro Study

Aim

Several applications of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) have been documented in various fields, including healthcare, dentistry, medication delivery, tissue and cancer imaging, biolabeling, and biosensing. Therefore, this study aimed to synthesize CuONPs using the plant extracts of Camellia Sinesis (CS) and citrus limon (CL). The nanoparticles were then evaluated for their cytotoxicity, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities.

Materials and Methods

CuONPs were prepared using CS and CL through the green synthesis method. The Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) test was used to assess the antibacterial activity against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans. The albumin denaturation assay was used to assess the substances' anti-inflammatory activity. The cytotoxicity was determined by conducting the brine shrimp lethality test. Additionally, the antioxidant nature was tested using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl method.

Results

CuONPs mediated by CS and CL were successfully synthesized. The nanoparticles demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against the bacteria being studied, specifically S. aureus. The cytotoxic effect was observed to be the least when the concentrations were below 20 µL. A potent antioxidant effect, characterized by its maximum absorbance at 517 nm, was observed at a concentration of 50 µL. A significant anti-inflammatory effect was noted for all tested concentrations.

Conclusion

The use of CS- and CL-mediated CuONPs demonstrates a favorable antimicrobial effect with reduced cytotoxicity, as well as improved anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects at higher concentrations.

Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles from Murraya koenigii and its corrosion resistivity on Ti-6Al-4V dental alloy

The present work describes green-mediated copper oxide nanoparticles as a potential corrosion inhibitor for the dental alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The salt of copper was reduced to metal nanoparticles using Murraya koenigii leaves, which helps with the agglomeration and nanocluster formation through a reduction mechanism. The current synthesis is a single-step process and is cost-effective. The synthesized nanoparticle was characterized using UV, FTIR, XRD, Zeta potential and Particle size analyzer, SEM, and EDX. The particles were then electrodeposited on Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the corrosion resistivity in the dental medium was analyzed using Electrochemical parameters such as Corrosion current, Corrosion potential, and anodic and cathodic intercepts through the Tafel and Nyquist plots. The synthesized nanoparticles showed characteristic absorbance at 359 nm. FTIR peaks confirm the phytochemical constituents present in the Murraya koenigii that accounts for the formation of nanoparticles. The XRD predicts the crystalline nature, which is further studied using SEM and EDX. The Zeta potential and Particle size analyzer confirms the negative-negative interactive nature of the synthesized CuO NPs. The NPs showed explicit corrosion inhibition properties with an overall inhibition efficiency of 58.15% and 25.6%, respectively. The study confirms the advantage of using Copper Oxide nanoparticles as a potential coating agent in dental implant alloys in increasing its corrosion efficiency.

Enhanced Antibacterial Activity at Ag-Cu Nanojunctions: Unveiling the Mechanism with Simple Surfaces of CuNPs-on-Ag Films

Deposition of CuNPs on silver film gives rise to the formation of active Ag-Cu interfaces leading to dramatic enhancements in antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) analyses reveal that CuNPs are covered in a thin Cu2O shell, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements (XPS) reveal that the Ag film samples contain significant amounts of Ag2O. XPS analyses show that the deposition of CuNPs on Ag films leads to the formation of a photoactive Ag2O-Cu2O heterostructure. Following a Z-scheme mechanism, electrons from the conduction band of Ag2O recombine with photogenerated holes from the valence band of Cu2O. Consequently, electrons at Cu2O's conduction band render Cu reduced and cause reductive activation of surface oxygen species on Cu forming reactive oxygen species (ROS). Interaction between metallic Cu and ROS species leads to the formation of a Cu(OH)2 phase. Both ROS and Cu(OH)2 species have previously been reported to lead to enhanced antibacterial properties. Holes on Ag2O produce a highly oxidized AgO phase, a phase reported to exhibit excellent antibacterial properties. Quantitative analysis of Cu and Ag high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS) spectra directly reveals several-fold increases in these active phases in full agreement with the observed increase in antibacterial activities. This study provides insight and surface design parameters by elucidating the important roles of Ag and Cu's bifunctionality as active antibacterial materials.

Green Synthesis of Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles With Rosemary and Ginger and Their Bactericidal Action Against Staphylococcus aureus

INTRODUCTION

Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) have significantly proved to be highly useful in restorative materials, dental adhesives, sealants, cements, and other dental applications to prevent microbial colonization and reduce the risk of infections. The present study was aimed at developing a dental material with antibacterial properties by combining titanium oxide NPs using ginger and rosemary extracts.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The formulation was prepared using rosemary and ginger, mediated by TiO2 NPs. The preparation was then introduced into the wells of a microplate consisting of cultured Staphylococcus aureus and was kept for incubation for four hours. To record the minimum inhibitory concentration, the test solution was added into Kimble tubes consisting of Muller-Hinton broth. The results obtained were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA.

RESULT

Increasing concentration led to decreased optical density, indicating bactericidal effects. Significantly lower optical density values were observed in decreasing order among the test samples (25, 50, and 100 μL) compared to control and antibiotic groups against Streptococcus, highlighting the potent antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of the greenly generated combination of titanium oxide NPs with herbs. This was also confirmed by moderate minimum inhibitory concentration at 100 μL.

CONCLUSION

The present study suggests that there is a bactericidal process at play, leading to a reduction in the overall bacterial count. It can be concluded that the ginger and rosemary-mediated titanium oxide NPs serve as potential antibacterial agents against S. aureus. This study can be used as a preliminary study, and further studies can be conducted to use this formulation in the field of medicine.

Exploring the potential of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials for sustainable water and wastewater treatment: A review of their antimicrobial properties

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) are of particular interest as antimicrobial agents in water and wastewater treatment due to their broad suppressive range against bacteria, viruses, and fungi commonly found in these environments. This review explores the potential of different types of metallic NPs, including zinc oxide, gold, copper oxide, and titanium oxide, for use as effective antimicrobial agents in water and wastewater treatment. This is due to the fact that metallic NPs possess a broad suppressive range against bacteria, viruses, as well as fungus. In addition to that, NPs are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. Despite the fact that most research has been focused on silver NPs because of the antibacterial qualities that are known to be associated with them, curiosity about other metallic NPs as potential antimicrobial agents has been growing. Zinc oxide, gold, copper oxide, and titanium oxide NPs are included in this category since it has been demonstrated that these elements have antibacterial properties. Inducing oxidative stress, damage to the cellular membranes, and breakdowns throughout the protein and DNA chains are some of the ways that metallic NPs can have an influence on microbial cells. The purpose of this review was to engage in an in-depth conversation about the current state of the art regarding the utilization of the most important categories of metallic NPs that are used as antimicrobial agents. Several approaches for the synthesis of metal-based NPs were reviewed, including physical and chemical methods as well as "green synthesis" approaches, which are synthesis procedures that do not involve the employment of any chemical agents. Moreover, additional pharmacokinetics, physicochemical properties, and the toxicological hazard associated with the application of silver NPs as antimicrobial agents were discussed.

Biogenic Nanoparticles Silver and Copper and Their Composites Derived from Marine Alga Ulva lactuca: Insight into the Characterizations, Antibacterial Activity, and Anti-Biofilm Formation

Bacterial pathogens cause pain and death, add significantly to the expense of healthcare globally, and pose a serious concern in many aspects of daily life. Additionally, they raise significant issues in other industries, including pharmaceuticals, clothing, and food packaging. Due to their unique properties, a great deal of attention has been given to biogenic metal nanoparticles, nanocomposites, and their applications against pathogenic bacteria. This study is focused on biogenic silver and copper nanoparticles and their composites (UL/Ag2 O-NPS, Ul/CuO-NPs, and Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs) produced by the marine green alga Ulva lactuca. The characterization of biogenic nanoparticles UL/Ag2 O-NPS and Ul/CuO-NPs and their composites Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs has been accomplished by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, and the zeta potential. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) experiments were conducted to prove antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and anti-biofilm. The FTIR spectroscopy results indicate the exiting band at 1633 cm-1, which represents N-H stretching in nanocomposites, with a small shift in both copper and silver nanoparticles, which is responsible for the bio-reduction of nanoparticles. The TEM image reveals that the Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs were hexagonal, and the size distribution ranged from 10 to 35 nm. Meanwhile, Ul/CuO-NPs are rod-shaped, whereas UL/Ag2 O-NPS are spherical. The EDX analysis shows that Cu metal was present in a high weight percentage over Ag in the case of bio-Ag/Cu-NCMs. The X-ray diffraction denotes that Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs, UL/CuO-NPs, and UL/Ag2 O-NPS were crystalline. The results predicted by the zeta potential demonstrate that Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs were more stable than Ul/CuO-NPs. The antibacterial activity of UL/Ag2 O-NPS, Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs, and UL/CuO-NPs was studied against eleven Gram-negative and Gram-positive multidrug-resistant bacterial species. The maximum inhibition zones were obtained with UL/Ag2 O-NPS, followed by Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs and Ul/CuO-NPs in all the tested bacteria. The maximum anti-biofilm percentage formed by E. coli KY856933 was obtained with UL/Ag2 O-NPS. These findings suggest that the synthesized nanoparticles might be a great alternative for use as an antibacterial agent against different multidrug-resistant bacterial strains.

Recent advances in metal nanoparticles to treat periodontitis

The gradual deterioration of the supporting periodontal tissues caused by periodontitis, a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease, is thought to be triggered by the colonization of dysbiotic plaque biofilms in a vulnerable host. One of the most prevalent dental conditions in the world, periodontitis is now the leading factor in adult tooth loss. When periodontitis does develop, it is treated by scraping the mineralized deposits and dental biofilm off the tooth surfaces. Numerous studies have shown that non-surgical treatment significantly improves clinical and microbiological indices in individuals with periodontitis. Although periodontal parameters have significantly improved, certain bacterial reservoirs often persist on root surfaces even after standard periodontal therapy. Periodontitis has been treated with local or systemic antibiotics as well as scaling and root planning. Since there aren't many brand-new antibiotics on the market, several researchers are currently concentrating on creating alternate methods of combating periodontal germs. There is a delay in a study on the subject of nanoparticle (NP) toxicity, which is especially concerned with mechanisms of action, while the area of nanomedicine develops. The most promising of them are metal NPs since they have potent antibacterial action. Metal NPs may be employed as efficient growth inhibitors in a variety of bacteria, making them useful for the treatment of periodontitis. In this way, the new metal NPs contributed significantly to the development of efficient anti-inflammatory and antibacterial platforms for the treatment of periodontitis. The current therapeutic effects of several metallic NPs on periodontitis are summarized in this study. This data might be used to develop NP-based therapeutic alternatives for the treatment of periodontal infections.

Advances of plant and biomass extracted zirconium nanoparticles in dental implant application

Nanoparticles are minimal materials with unique physicochemical features that set them apart from bulk materials of the same composition. These properties make nanoparticles highly desirable for use in commercial and medical research. The primary intention for the development of nanotechnology is to achieve overarching social objectives like bettering our understanding of nature, boosting productivity, improving healthcare, and extending the bounds of sustainable development and human potential. Keeping this as a motivation, Zirconia nanoparticles are becoming the preferred nanostructure for modern biomedical applications. This nanotechnology is exceptionally versatile and has several potential uses in dental research. This review paper concentrated on the various benefits of zirconium nanoparticles in dentistry and how they provide superior strength and flexibility compared to their counterparts. Moreover, the popularity of zirconium nanoparticles is also growing as it has strong biocompatibility potency. Zirconium nanoparticles can be used to develop or address the major difficulty in dentistry. Therefore, this review paper aims to provide a summary of the fundamental research and applications of zirconium nanoparticles in dental implants.

Copper-based nanoparticles against microbial infections

Drug-resistant bacteria and highly infectious viruses are among the major global threats affecting the human health. There is an immediate need for novel strategies to tackle this challenge. Copper-based nanoparticles (CBNPs) have exhibited a broad antimicrobial capacity and are receiving increasing attention in this context. In this review, we describe the functionalization of CBNPs, elucidate their antibacterial and antiviral activity as well as applications, and briefly review their toxicity, biodistribution, and persistence. The limitations of the current study and potential solutions are also shortly discussed. The review will guide the rational design of functional nanomaterials for antimicrobial application. Bioactive Materials for Caries Management: A Literature Review

Researchers have developed novel bioactive materials for caries management. Many clinicians also favour these materials, which fit their contemporary practice philosophy of using the medical model of caries management and minimally invasive dentistry. Although there is no consensus on the definition of bioactive materials, bioactive materials in cariology are generally considered to be those that can form hydroxyapatite crystals on the tooth surface. Common bioactive materials include fluoride-based materials, calcium- and phosphate-based materials, graphene-based materials, metal and metal-oxide nanomaterials and peptide-based materials. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a fluoride-based material containing silver; silver is antibacterial and fluoride promotes remineralisation. Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate is a calcium- and phosphate-based material that can be added to toothpaste and chewing gum for caries prevention. Researchers use graphene-based materials and metal or metal-oxide nanomaterials as anticaries agents. Graphene-based materials, such as graphene oxide-silver, have antibacterial and mineralising properties. Metal and metal-oxide nanomaterials, such as silver and copper oxide, are antimicrobial. Incorporating mineralising materials could introduce remineralising properties to metallic nanoparticles. Researchers have also developed antimicrobial peptides with mineralising properties for caries prevention. The purpose of this literature review is to provide an overview of current bioactive materials for caries management.

Ceramic Nanomaterials in Caries Prevention: A Narrative Review

Ceramic nanomaterials are nanoscale inorganic metalloid solids that can be synthesised by heating at high temperatures followed by rapid cooling. Since the first nanoceramics were developed in the 1980s, ceramic nanomaterials have rapidly become one of the core nanomaterials for research because of their versatility in application and use in technology. Researchers are developing ceramic nanomaterials for dental use because ceramic nanoparticles are more stable and cheaper in production than metallic nanoparticles. Ceramic nanomaterials can be used to prevent dental caries because some of them have mineralising properties to promote the remineralisation of tooth tissue. Ceramic minerals facilitate the remineralisation process and maintain an equilibrium in pH levels to maintain tooth integrity. In addition, ceramic nanomaterials have antibacterial properties to inhibit the growth of cariogenic biofilm. Researchers have developed antimicrobial nanoparticles, conjugated ceramic minerals with antibacterial and mineralising properties, to prevent the formation and progression of caries. Common ceramic nanomaterials developed for caries prevention include calcium-based (including hydroxyapatite-based), bioactive glass-based, and silica-based nanoparticles. Calcium-based ceramic nanomaterials can substitute for the lost hydroxyapatite by depositing calcium ions. Bioactive glass-based nanoparticles contain surface-reactive glass that can form apatite crystals resembling bone and tooth tissue and exhibit chemical bonding to the bone and tooth tissue. Silica-based nanoparticles contain silica for collagen infiltration and enhancing heterogeneous mineralisation of the dentin collagen matrix. In summary, ceramic nanomaterials can be used for caries prevention because of their antibacterial and mineralising properties. This study gives an overview of ceramic nanomaterials for the prevention of dental caries.

Multifunctional Medical Grade Resin with Enhanced Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties: The Effect of Copper Nano-Inclusions in Vat Polymerization (VPP) Additive Manufacturing

Vat photopolymerization (VPP) is an additive manufacturing process commonly used in medical applications. This work aims, for the first time in the literature, to extend and enhance the performance of a commercial medical-grade resin for the VPP process, with the development of nanocomposites, using Copper (Cu) nanoparticles as the additive at two different concentrations. The addition of the Cu nanoparticles was expected to enhance the mechanical properties of the resin and to enable biocidal properties on the nanocomposites since Cu is known for its antibacterial performance. The effect of the Cu concentration was investigated. The nanocomposites were prepared with high-shear stirring. Specimens were 3D printed following international standards for mechanical testing. Their thermal and spectroscopic response was also investigated. The morphological characteristics were examined. The antibacterial performance was evaluated with an agar well diffusion screening process. The experimental results were analyzed with statistical modeling tools with two control parameters (three levels each) and eleven response parameters. Cu enhanced the mechanical properties in all cases studied. 0.5 wt.% Cu nanocomposite showed the highest improvement (approximately 11% in tensile and 10% in flexural strength). The antibacterial performance was sufficient against S. aureus and marginal against E. coli.

Growing Global Research Interest in Antimicrobial Peptides for Caries Management: A Bibliometric Analysis

Objective: Researchers are studying the use of antimicrobial peptides as functional biomaterials to prevent and treat dental caries. This study aims to investigate the global research interest in antimicrobial peptides for caries management. Methods: Two independent investigators systematically searched with keywords ('Caries' OR 'Dental caries') AND ('Antimicrobial peptide' OR 'AMP' OR 'Statherin' OR 'Histatin' OR 'Defensin' OR 'Cathelicidin') on Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus. They removed duplicate publications and screened the titles and abstracts to identify relevant publications. The included publications were summarized and classified as laboratory studies, clinical trials or reviews. The citation count and citation density of the three publication types were compared using a one-way analysis of variance. The publications' bibliometric data were analyzed using the Bibliometrix program. Results: This study included 163 publications with 115 laboratory studies (71%), 29 clinical trials (18%) and 19 reviews (11%). The number of publications per year have increased steadily since 2002. The citation densities (mean ± SD) of laboratory study publications (3.67 ± 2.73) and clinical trial publications (2.63 ± 1.85) were less than that of review articles (5.79 ± 1.27) (p = 0.002). The three publication types had no significant difference in citation count (p = 0.54). Most publications (79%, 129/163) reported the development of a novel antimicrobial peptide. China (52/163, 32%) and the US (29/163, 18%) contributed to 50% (81/163) of the publications. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis identified an increasing trend in global interest in antimicrobial peptides for caries management since 2002. The main research topic was the development of novel antimicrobial peptides. Most publications were laboratory studies, as were the three publications with the highest citation counts. Laboratory studies had high citation counts, whereas reviews had high citation density.

Using Copper-Doped Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanospheres to Impart Anti-Bacterial Properties to Dental Composites

Experimental dental resin composites containing copper-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanospheres (Cu-MBGN) were developed to impart anti-bacterial properties. Increasing amounts of Cu-MBGN (0, 1, 5 and 10 wt%) were added to the BisGMA/TEGDMA resin matrix containing micro- and nano-fillers of inert glass, keeping the resin/filler ratio constant. Surface micromorphology and elemental analysis were performed to evaluate the homogeneous distribution of filler particles. The study investigated the effects of Cu-MBGN on the degree of conversion, polymerization shrinkage, porosity, ion release and anti-bacterial activity on S. mutans and A. naeslundii. Experimental materials containing Cu-MBGN showed a dose-dependent Cu release with an initial burst and a further increase after 28 days. The composite containing 10% Cu-MBGN had the best anti-bacterial effect on S. mutans, as evidenced by the lowest adherence of free-floating bacteria and biofilm formation. In contrast, the 45S5-containing materials had the highest S. mutans adherence. Ca release was highest in the bioactive control containing 15% 45S5, which correlated with the highest number of open porosities on the surface. Polymerization shrinkage was similar for all tested materials, ranging from 3.8 to 4.2%, while the degree of conversion was lower for Cu-MBGN materials. Cu-MBGN composites showed better anti-bacterial properties than composites with 45S5 BG.

Enhanced anti-microbial activity and osseointegration of Ta/Cu co-implanted polyetheretherketone

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been widely applied for orthopedic and oral implants due to its excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and radiolucency. However, its bioinert and the lack of anti-microbial activity limit its application. We modified the PEEK surface with Ta/Cu co-implantation using plasma immersion ion-implantation technology. After implantation of Ta/Cu ions, the morphology and roughness of the PEEK surface were not significantly changed at micron level. We estimated the cytocompatibility, anti-microbial ability, and osteogenic differentiation of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) of the modified surfaces in vitro. Compared to the untreated surfaces, the Ta ion-treated surface showed improved adhesion, proliferation, ALP activity, ECM mineralization, and osteogenic gene expression of BMSCs. Further, the Cu ion-treated surface showed reduced initial adhesion and proliferation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro and proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus in the mouse subcutaneous implant-associated infection model. According to a rat bone repair model, all Ta ion-implanted groups demonstrated improved new bone formation. In summary, Ta/Cu ion co-impanation improved anti-microbial activity and promoted osseointegration of the PEEK surface.

Impact of Copper-Doped Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanospheres on the Polymerisation Kinetics and Shrinkage Stress of Dental Resin Composites

We embedded copper-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanospheres (Cu-MBGN) with antibacterial and ion-releasing properties into experimental dental composites and investigated the effect of Cu-MBGN on the polymerisation properties. We prepared seven composites with a BisGMA/TEGDMA (60/40) matrix and 65 wt.% total filler content, added Cu-MBGN or a combination of Cu-MBGN and silanised silica to the silanised barium glass base, and examined nine parameters: light transmittance, degree of conversion (DC), maximum polymerisation rate (R_max), time to reach R_max, linear shrinkage, shrinkage stress (PSS), maximum PSS rate, time to reach maximum PSS rate, and depth of cure. Cu-MBGN without silica accelerated polymerisation, reduced light transmission, and had the highest DC (58.8 ± 0.9%) and R_max (9.8 ± 0.2%/s), but lower shrinkage (3 ± 0.05%) and similar PSS (0.89 ± 0.07 MPa) versus the inert reference (0.83 ± 0.13 MPa). Combined Cu-MBGN and silica slowed the R_max and achieved a similar DC but resulted in higher shrinkage. However, using a combined 5 wt.% Cu-MBGN and silica, the PSS resembled that of the inert reference. The synergistic action of 5 wt.% Cu-MBGN and silanised silica in combination with silanised barium glass resulted in a material with the highest likelihood for dental applications in future.

Comparison and Advanced Antimicrobial Strategies of Silver and Copper Nanodrug-Loaded Glass Ionomer Cement against Dental Caries Microbes

Caries lesions during cement repairs are a severe issue, and developing a unique antimicrobial restorative biomaterial can help to reduce necrotic lesion recurrence. As a result, Thymus vulgaris extract was used to biosynthesize copper nanoparticles (TVE-CuNPs) exhibiting different characteristics (TVE). Along with TVE-CuNPs, commercial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and metronidazole were combined with glass ionomer cement (GIC) to test its antibacterial efficacy and compressive strength. FTIR, XRD, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and TEM were applied to characterize the TVE-CuNPs. Additionally, AgNPs and TVE-CuNPs were also combined with metronidazole and GIC. The modified GIC samples were divided into six groups, where groups 1 and 2 included conventional GIC and GIC with 1.5% metromidazole, respectively; group 3 had GIC with 0.5% TVE-CuNPs, while group 4 had 0.5% TVE-CuNPs with metronidazole in 1.5%; group 5 had GIC with 0.5% AgNPs, and group 6 had 0.5% AgNPs with metronidazole at 1.5%. An antimicrobial test was performed against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) by the disc diffusion method and the modified direct contact test (MDCT). GIC groups 4 and 6 demonstrated a greater antimicrobial efficiency against the two tested strains than the other groups. In GIC groups 4 and 6, the combination of GIC with two antimicrobial agents, 1.5% metronidazole and 0.5% TVE-CuNPs or AgNPs, enhanced the antimicrobial efficiency when compared to that of the other groups with or without a single agent. GIC group specimens combined with nanosilver and nanocopper had similar mean compressive strengths when compared to the other GIC groups. Finally, the better antimicrobial efficacy of GIC boosted by metronidazole and the tested nanoparticles against the tested strains may be relevant for the future creation of more efficient and modified restorations to reduce dental caries lesions.
