Abstract
A balanced trace element status is essential for the optimal functioning of all organisms. However, their concentrations are often altered in diverse medical conditions. This study investigated the trace element profiles in plasma samples of dogs with endocrine diseases and used chemometric techniques to explore their associations with biochemical data. Thirteen elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn) were measured in 40 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (HAC), 29 dogs with diabetes mellitus (DM), 11 dogs with hypothyroidism (HT) and 30 control dogs using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Statistically significant differences were observed for As, Cu, Mo, Se and Zn. In comparison with the control group, the HT patients had higher As and lower Se levels, while the HAC group had higher concentrations of Mo. All three disease groups had higher Cu and Zn concentrations than the control group, with the DM group having higher Cu concentrations and the HAC group higher Zn concentrations than the other endocrinopathy groups. The chemometric analysis revealed distinctive association patterns for discriminating each pathology group and the control group. Moreover, the analysis revealed the following associations: Mo with glucose levels and Cu with fructosamine levels in the DM group, As with cortisol levels in the HAC group, and Se with TT4 levels and As with TSH levels in the HT group. The study findings provide valuable insights into the complex relationships between trace elements and endocrinopathies, elucidating the associations with biochemical markers in these diseases. Larger-scale studies are necessary to fully understand the observed relationships and explore the potential clinical applications.

Abstract
Limited and inconclusive evidence exists regarding the correlation between serum zinc levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and advanced fibrosis. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between serum zinc concentration and both NAFLD and advanced liver fibrosis among the United States (US) adults. 3398 subjects from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2016 were included. Serum zinc concentration was measured by inductively coupled plasma dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry (ICP-DRC-MS). NAFLD was diagnosed with Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI), and advanced fibrosis risk was assessed by NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS). Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to examine the association between serum zinc concentration and NAFLD and advanced fibrosis. Linear trend tests were conducted by incorporating the median of serum zinc quartiles as a continuous variable in the models. We employed sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis to enhance the robustness of our results. The results from the RCS regression revealed no evident nonlinear relationship between serum zinc concentration and the presence of NAFLD and advanced fibrosis (p-nonlinear > 0.05). Compared with those in the lowest quartile (Q1) of serum zinc concentrations, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of NAFLD were 1.49 (0.89,2.49) in Q2, 0.99 (0.68,1.45) in Q3, and 2.00 (1.40,2.86) in Q4 (p-trend = 0.002). Similarly, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for advanced fibrosis in Q2-4 compared to Q1 were 0.86 (0.50,1.47), 0.60 (0.26,1.39), and 0.41 (0.21,0.77), respectively (p-trend = 0.006). Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses reinforce the same conclusion. The investigation revealed a positive linear relationship between serum zinc concentrations and the probability of developing NAFLD. Conversely, an inverse correlation was observed between serum zinc concentrations and the incidence of advanced liver fibrosis among individuals diagnosed with NAFLD.

Abstract
The objective of the present study is assessment of serum trace element and amino acid levels in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients with subsequent evaluation of its independent associations with markers of liver injury and metabolic risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS 140 women aged 20-90 years old with diagnosed NAFLD and 140 healthy women with a respective age range were enrolled in the current study. Analysis of serum and hair levels of trace elements and minerals was performed with inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS). Serum amino acid concentrations were evaluated by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV-detection. In addition, routine biochemical parameters including liver damage markers, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), were assessed spectrophotometrically. RESULTS The findings demonstrated that patients with NAFLD were characterized by higher ALT, GGT, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cholinesterase (CE) activity, as well as increased levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and uric acid. NAFLD patients were characterized by reduced serum and hair Co, Se, and Zn levels, as well as hair Cu content and serum Mn concentrations in comparison to controls. Circulating Ala, Cit, Glu, Gly, Ile, Leu, Phe, and Tyr levels in NAFLD patients exceeded those in the control group. Multiple linear regression demonstrated that serum and hair trace element levels were significantly associated with circulating amino acid levels after adjustment for age, BMI, and metabolic parameters including liver damage markers. CONCLUSION It is proposed that altered trace element handling may contribute to NAFLD pathogenesis through modulation of amino acid metabolism.

Abstract
The increasing use of molybdate has raised concerns about its potential toxicity in humans. However, the potential toxicity of molybdate under the current level of human exposure remains largely unknown. Endogenous metabolic alterations that are caused in humans by environmental exposure to pollutants are associated with the occurrence and progression of many diseases. This study exposed eight-week-old male C57 mice to sodium molybdate at doses relevant to humans (0.01 and 1 mg/kg/day) for eight weeks. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) were utilized to assess changes in urine element levels and serum metabolites in mice, respectively. A total of 838 subjects from the NHANES 2017-2018 population database were also included in our study to verify the associations between molybdenum and cadmium found in mice. Analysis of the metabolome in mice revealed that four metabolites in blood serum exhibited significant changes, including 5-aminolevulinic acid, glycolic acid, l-acetylcarnitine, and 2,3-dihydroxypropyl octanoate. Analysis of the elementome revealed a significant increase in urine levels of cadmium after molybdate exposure in mice. Notably, molybdenum also showed a positive correlation with cadmium in humans from the NHANES database. Further analysis identified a positive correlation between cadmium and 2,3-dihydroxypropyl octanoate in mice. In conclusion, these findings suggest that molybdate exposure disrupted amino acid and lipid metabolism, which may be partially mediated by molybdate-altered cadmium levels. The integration of elementome and metabolome data provides sensitive information on molybdate-induced metabolic disorders and associated toxicities at levels relevant to human exposure.

Abstract
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), characterized primarily by hepatic steatosis, has become the most prevalent liver disease worldwide, affecting approximately two-fifths of the global population. The pathogenesis of MAFLD is extremely complex, and to date, there are no approved therapeutic drugs for clinical use. Considerable evidence indicates that various metabolic disorders play a pivotal role in the progression of MAFLD, including lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, and micronutrients. In recent years, the medicinal properties of natural products have attracted widespread attention, and numerous studies have reported their efficacy in ameliorating metabolic disorders and subsequently alleviating MAFLD. This review aims to summarize the metabolic-associated pathological mechanisms of MAFLD, as well as the natural products that regulate metabolic pathways to alleviate MAFLD.

Abstract
Trace elements are important components in the body and have fundamental roles in maintaining a healthy and balanced pregnancy process. Either deficiency or excess of trace elements, including selenium, iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium can lead to pregnancy complications. As a rare disorder during pregnancy of unknown aetiology, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) poses a significant risk to the fetus of perinatal mortality. ICP is a multifactorial complication of which the pathogenesis is still an enigma. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated the association of ICP with some trace elements. Evidence from retrospective studies in humans further revealed the possible contributing roles of trace elements in the pathogenesis of ICP. The published literature on the association of trace elements with ICP was reviewed. Recent advances in molecular biological techniques from animal studies have helped to elucidate the possible mechanisms by how these trace elements function in regulating oxidative reactions, inflammatory reactions and immune balance in the maternal-fetal interface, as well as the influence on hepato-intestinal circulation of bile acid. The scenario regarding the role of trace elements in the pathogenesis of ICP is still developing. The administration or depletion of these trace elements may have promising effects in alleviating the symptoms and improving the pregnancy outcomes of ICP.

Abstract
Numerous nutritional factors increase the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. The dysregulation of zinc, copper, and selenium homeostasis is associated with the occurrence of HCC. The impairment of the homeostasis of these essential trace elements results in oxidative stress, DNA damage, cell cycle progression, and angiogenesis, finally leading to hepatocarcinogenesis. These essential trace elements can affect the microenvironment in HCC. The carrier proteins for zinc and copper and selenium-containing enzymes play important roles in the prevention or progression of HCC. These trace elements enhance or alleviate the chemosensitivity of anticancer agents in patients with HCC. The zinc, copper, or selenium may affect the homeostasis of other trace elements with each other. Novel types of cell death including ferropotosis and cupropotosis are also associated with hepatocarcinogenesis. Therapeutic strategies for HCC that target these carrier proteins for zinc and copper or selenium-containing enzymes have been developed in in vitro and in vivo studies. The use of zinc-, copper- or selenium-nanoparticles has been considered as novel therapeutic agents for HCC. These results indicate that zinc, copper, and selenium may become promising therapeutic targets in patients with HCC. The clinical application of these agents is an urgent unmet requirement. This review article highlights the correlation between the dysregulation of the homeostasis of these essential trace elements and the development of HCC and summarizes the current trends on the roles of these essential trace elements in the pathogenesis of hepatocarcinogenesis.

Abstract
Access to clean and safe drinking water is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a kind of small molecular natural mineral water, C-cell mineral water on hyperuricemia male mice metabolism condition. A 13-week drinking water intervention study was conducted in Uox-knockout mice (KO). The hepatic metabolite profiling and related genes expression were detected by UPLC-TOF-MS and transcriptomic, and the gut microbiota of KO mice was determined by metagenomics sequencing. Results showed that the body weight of mice fed with C-cell water was remarkably lower than that of control mice on D 77 and D 91. Hepatic metabolite profiling revealed a shift in the pathway of glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, and biosynthesis of cofactors in KO mice fed with C-cell mineral water. Increased energy metabolism levels were related to increased hepatic expression of genes responsible for coenzyme metabolism and lipid metabolism. Gut microbiota was characterized by increasing activity of beneficial bacteria Blautia, and reducing activity of pathobiont bacteria Parasutterella. These genera have been reported to be associated with obesity. Small molecular mineral-rich natural water ingestion regulates metabolism and gut microbiota, protecting against obesity induced by hyperuricemia through mediating a microbiota-liver axis.

Abstract
Essential trace elements are involved in the pathogenesis of chronic liver disease (CLD), which causes hepatic inflammation, steatosis and fibrosis. The present study investigated the roles of essential trace elements in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus-related CLD (CLD-C) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and compared the levels of these trace elements between the two groups. Serum zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), copper (Cu) and ferritin levels were measured in patients with CLD-C (n=66) and NASH (n=26). Subsequently, the correlations between the levels of these essential trace elements in patient sera and the biochemical or pathological parameters of patients with CLD-C and NASH were determined. The results demonstrated that the serum ferritin levels were significantly correlated with serum alanine aminotransferase levels in both the CLD-C and NASH groups. In both groups, the serum Zn and Se levels were significantly associated with serum albumin levels, and inversely associated with the stages of hepatic fibrosis. Furthermore, serum ferritin levels were positively associated, and serum Zn levels were inversely correlated with the grades of hepatic steatosis in patients with CLD-C, whereas serum Se levels were closely associated with the grades of hepatic steatosis only in patients with NASH. In both groups, serum ferritin levels were positively correlated, and serum Zn levels were inversely correlated with homeostasis model for the assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values, and serum Se was negatively correlated with the HOMA-IR values in patients with CLD-C only. In conclusion, these results indicated that the involvement of essential trace elements in insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis may differ slightly between patients with CLD-C and those with NASH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A balanced diet containing selenium (Se) and other trace elements is essential for normal development and growth. Se has been recognized as an essential trace element; however, its interaction with other elements has not been fully investigated. In the present study, sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), Se and rubidium (Rb), were analysed in liver and brain regions under altered dietary Se intake in weanling mice to identify major discriminatory elements. METHODS The study investigated the effects of different levels of Se intake on the elemental composition in liver and brain tissues of weaned mice. After 24 weeks of feeding with Se adequate, deficient, and excess diets, elemental analysis was performed on the harvested tissues using Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Statistical analysis that included analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation coefficient analysis, principal component analysis, and partial least squares discriminant analysis were performed. RESULTS The ANCOVA showed statistically significant changes and correlations among the analysed elements under altered dietary Se status. The multivariate analysis showed differential changes in elements in liver and brain regions. The results suggest that long-term dietary Se alternations lead to dyshomeostasis in trace elements that are required in higher concentrations compared to Se. It was observed that changes in the Fe, Co, and Rb levels were similar in all the tissues studied, whereas the changes in Mg, Cr, and Mn levels were different among the tissues under altered dietary Se status. Additionally, the changes in Rb levels correlated with the dietary Se intake but had no relation with the tissue Se levels. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest interactions between Mg, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Se under altered Se status may impact cellular functions during postnatal development. However, the possible biological significance of alterations in Rb levels under different dietary Se paradigms needs to be further explored.

Abstract
Djungarian hamsters are small rodents that show pronounced physiological acclimations in response to changes in photoperiod, and unfavorable environmental conditions such as reduced food availability and low external temperature. These include substantial adjustments, such as severe body weight loss and the use of daily torpor. Torpor is a state of decreased physiological activity in eutherms, usually marked by low metabolic rate and a reduced body temperature. In this study, we investigated the effects of photoperiodic acclimation and food deprivation on systemic iron metabolism in Djungarian hamsters. Our study illustrates the association between liver iron levels and the incidence of torpor expression during the course of the experiment. Moreover, we show that both, acclimation to short photoperiods and long-term food restriction, associated with iron sequestration in the liver. This effect was accompanied with hypoferremia and mild reduction in the expression of principal iron-hormone, hepcidin. In addition to iron, the levels of manganese, selenium, and zinc were increased in the liver of hamsters under food restriction. These findings may be important factors for regulating physiological processes in hamsters, since iron and other trace elements are essential for many metabolic and physiological processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Findings on the role of diet in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) pathogenesis are inconsistent. There are few studies on the dietary habits of pregnant women with NAFLD. Our primary aim was to compare the dietary intakes of pregnant women with and without NAFLD. METHODS This case-control study recruited 60 women (26-34 weeks' gestation) with recently diagnosed gestational diabetes (GDM) before any treatment was implemented. At recruitment, all participants underwent B-mode hepatic ultrasound. We included 30 women with sonographic NAFLD (cases) and 30 women without NAFLD (controls) matched for age, skin color, and pre-pregnancy body mass index. We assessed participants' dietary intakes in the last six months using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Mann-Whitney´s test was used to compare differences in median macro and micronutrient intakes between cases and controls. RESULTS Total median daily energy (1965.1 × 1949.2 calories) and lipid (25.1% × 28.3%) intakes were similar in women with and without NAFLD and fell within recommended ranges. Participants with NAFLD reported significantly higher median daily intakes of carbohydrates (59.4% × 53.1% p = 0.003), and significantly lower protein (15.6% × 17.0% p = 0.005), fiber (10.7 × 13.3 g/day p = 0.010), and vitamin C (151.8 × 192.6 mg/day p = 0.008) intakes than those without NAFLD. CONCLUSIONS Pregnant women with NAFLD ingest more carbohydrates and less protein, fiber, and vitamin C than those without NAFLD. Our findings contribute to understanding the role of diet in the development of NAFLD in pregnant women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Copper is an essential dietary element with a crucial role in physiological regulation. However, the relationship between dietary copper intake and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS This study encompassed a cohort of 2535 adults aged over 40 years, derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014. Dietary copper intake from both food sources and supplements was assessed through two 24-h dietary recall interviews. AAC was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and classified into 3 groups using the Kauppila score system. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to evaluate the association between dietary copper intake and AAC. Among the participants, a total of 771 individuals (30.4%) were diagnosed with AAC, of which 239 (9.4%) exhibited severe AAC. Higher dietary copper intake was significantly associated with a lower incidence of severe AAC. Specifically, for each 1 mg/day increase in dietary copper intake, the incidence of severe AAC decreased by 38% (odds ratios [OR] 0.62, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.39-0.98) after adjustment for relevant covariates. Moreover, individuals in the third tertile of copper intake had a 37% lower incidence of AAC compared to those in the first tertile [OR 0.63, 95% CI (0.43-0.95)]. However, no significant associations were found between supplemental copper intake or serum copper levels and AAC. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that lower dietary copper intake, rather than serum copper levels or supplement copper intake, is significantly associated with a higher prevalence of AAC in adults ≥40 years old in the United States.

Abstract
Background Sleep disturbance and trace elements imbalance are common features in patients with decompensated cirrhosis, partially sharing similar mechanistic contributors and linking to adverse outcomes. However, there is a paucity of data concerning their relationship. Objectives To investigate the association between serum trace elements levels and sleep quality in the context of cirrhosis. Design Cross-sectional study. Methods We consecutively enrolled 160 patients with decompensated cirrhosis. The sleep disturbance was determined by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI > 5). Serum trace elements [magnesium, calcium, iron, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead, and manganese] was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Association of examined trace elements levels and sleep disturbance was analyzed by multiple linear (global PSQI scores) and multivariate logistic (dichotomized PSQI categories) regression models, respectively. Results In total, 91 patients (56.88%) represented PSQI-defined sleep disturbance, characterized by female preponderance, lower body mass index levels, and higher serum Cu levels (all p < 0.05). Looking into its clinical relevance with debilitating conditions, we showed that Cu/Zn ratio (CZr) is significantly higher in cirrhosis with poor sleep quality (1.77 versus 1.48, p = 0.003). Diagnostic performance analysis indicated CZr > 1.62 to exhibit better discrimination relative to respective Cu. Both multiple linear (β = 0.355, p < 0.001) and multivariate logistic regression (odds ratio = 2.364, p = 0.019) identified higher CZr as an independent risk factor associated with sleep disturbance. Conclusion Our findings implied an association between higher CZr and the presence of sleep disturbance in patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

Abstract
Liver diseases are the major predisposing conditions for the development of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty. Recently, the mechanism of the onset of these complications has been better established. Regardless of the etiology of the underlying liver disease, the clinical manifestations are common. The main consequences are impaired dietary intake, altered macro- and micronutrient metabolism, energy metabolism disturbances, an increase in energy expenditure, nutrient malabsorption, sarcopenia, frailty, and osteopathy. These complications have direct effects on clinical outcomes, survival, and quality of life. The nutritional status should be assessed systematically and periodically during follow-up in these patients. Maintaining and preserving an adequate nutritional status is crucial and should be a mainstay of treatment. Although general nutritional interventions have been established, special considerations are needed in specific settings such as decompensated cirrhosis, alcohol-related liver disease, and metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease. In this review, we summarize the physiopathology and factors that impact the nutritional status of liver disease. We review how to assess malnutrition and sarcopenia and how to prevent and manage these complications in this setting.

Abstract
During inflammatory processes, immunocompetent cells are exposed to substantial amounts of free radicals and toxic compounds. Glutathione is a cysteine-containing tripeptide that is an important and ubiquitous antioxidant molecule produced in human organs. The intracellular content of GSH regulates the detoxifying capacity of cells, as well as the inflammatory and immune response. GSH is particularly important in the liver, where it serves as the major non-protein thiol involved in cellular antioxidant defense. There are numerous causes of hepatitis. The inflammation of the liver can be caused by a variety of infectious viruses. The relationship between oxidative stress and the hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is not fully known. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between hepatotropic viruses and glutathione status, including reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG), as well as antioxidant enzymes, e.g., glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in liver diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disorders of metal elements and platelet dysfunction are common in patients with trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC). AIM The aim of this study was to explore the potential role of plasma metal elements in platelet dysfunction in TIC. METHODS Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control, hemorrhage shock (HS) and multiple injury (MI) groups. At timepoints of 0.5 and 3 h after trauma and being documented as HS 0.5 h, HS3 h, MI 0.5 h or MI3 h, blood samples were harvested for inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, conventional coagulation function and thromboelastograph. RESULTS The plasma zinc (Zn), vanadium (V) and cadmium (Ca) decreased initially in HS 0.5 h and recovered slightly in HS3 h, whereas their plasma concentrations continued to decrease from beginning till MI3 h (p < 0.05). In HS, plasma Ca, V and nickel were negatively correlated to the time taken to reach the initial formation (R), whereas R was positively correlated to plasms Zn, V, Ca and selenium in MI (p < 0.05). In MI, plasma Ca was positively correlated to maximum amplitude, and plasma V was positively correlated to platelet count (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The plasma concentrations of Zn, V and Ca appeared to contribute to platelet dysfunction in HS 0.5 h, HS3 h, MI 0.5 h and MI3 h, which were trauma type sensitive.

Abstract
PURPOSE The therapeutic success of minimal invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) is challenging due to many factors including fibrotic or occlusive events. Recent clinical data show sudden peaks of intraocular pressure (IOP) in the postoperative care of glaucoma patients after suprachoroidal draining stents. Yet, the reasons for the IOP peaks are speculative. As a link between trace elements and fibrosis had been previously observed in systemic disorders, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of trace elements on the therapeutic success of the suprachoroidal draining stents in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). MATERIAL AND METHODS An analysis of a prospective single-center study was done: fifty-five eyes of patients with OAG (29 female, 26 male) underwent Cypass Micro-Stent implantation either as a stand-alone procedure or combined with cataract surgery. All patients underwent pre-operatively an ophthalmological examination which included slit lamp biomicroscopy and fundoscopy. IOP was measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry. Functional and morphometric data were assessed by Octopus G1-perimetry, which included measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (Spectralis OCT). Data of the patients' follow-ups were recorded during 18 months post-operatively. The therapeutic success of CyPass Micro-Stent was classified as 'success' (IOP reduction ≥20% compared to a pre-operative baseline without any medication), 'qualified success' (IOP reduction ≥20 % with same or lower additional eye medication), and 'failure' (IOP reduction ≤20 % or additional surgical treatment necessary). Aqueous humour was extracted once during surgery for analysis of the level of 14 trace elements: Copper (Cu), Cadmium (Cd), Cobalt (Co), Chromium (Cr), Iron (Fe), Lithium (Li), Magnesium (Mg), Manganese (Mn), Phosphorus (P), Lead (Pb), Titanium (Ti), Uranium (U), Vanadium (V), and Zinc (Zn). Analysis of the trace elements was done using an ELEMENT 2, ICP-sf-MS instrument (Thermo-Fisher Scientific, Bremen, Germany). Analysis of levels of trace elements was done across the patients' groups of the three subclasses of therapeutic success. Statistical investigations for substantial differences were conducted using the method of least squares to fit general linear models and mixed models. The last one for the repeated measurements of IOP. RESULTS Levels of Mg were significantly lower one month postoperatively in the success group (LS-Mean 1.30 mg/L) compared to the qualified success group (LS-Mean 1.22 mg/L; p-value = 0.04). Fe was significantly increased in the failure group (LS-Mean 2.07 µg/L) compared to the qualified success group (LS-Mean 1.64 µg/L; p-value = 0.019) after 3 months of follow-up. Additionally, Fe levels were significantly lower in the success group (LS-Mean 1.47 µg/L) compared to the failure cohort (LS-Mean 2.07 µg/L; p-value = 0.009). After a period of 18 months, significantly higher levels of Mn were observed in the success group (LS-Mean 1.24 µg/L) than in the failure group (LS Mean 0.30 µg/L, p-value = 0.019). CONCLUSION The present data might suggest that trace elements can influence therapeutic success of suprachoroidal draining devices postoperatively and thus offer first hints for potential novel therapeutic options.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatolenticular degeneration (HLD) is an autosomal recessive disorder concerning copper metabolism. Copper overload is also accompanied by iron overload in HLD patients, which can lead to ferroptosis. Curcumin, the active component in turmeric, has the potential to inhibit ferroptosis. PURPOSE The current study proposed a systematic investigation of the protective effects of curcumin against HLD and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS The protective effect of curcumin on toxic milk (TX) mice was studied. Liver tissue was observed via hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining and the ultrastructure of the liver tissue was observed through transmission electron microscopy. Copper levels in the tissues, serum, and metabolites were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). In addition, serum and liver indicators were evaluated. In cellular experiments, the effect of curcumin on the viability of rat normal liver cells (BRL-3A) was determined via the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Cell and mitochondrial morphology were observed in curcumin-mediated HLD model cells. The intracellular copper ion fluorescence intensity was observed via fluorescence microscopy, and intracellular copper iron content was detected using AAS. Further, oxidative stress indicators were evaluated. Cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cellular mitochondrial membrane potential were examined via flow cytometry. Furthermore, the expression levels of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) were determined via western blotting (WB). RESULTS The histopathology of the liver confirmed the hepatoprotective effects of curcumin. Curcumin improved copper metabolism in TX mice. Both serum liver enzyme markers and antioxidant enzyme levels indicated the protective effect of curcumin against HLD-related liver injury. The MTT assay results showed that curcumin was protective against excess copper-induced injury. Curcumin improved the morphology of HLD model cells and their mitochondrial morphology. The Cu2+ fluorescent probe and the AAS results indicated that curcumin reduced Cu2+ content in HLD hepatocytes. In addition, curcumin improved oxidative stress levels and prevented the decline of mitochondrial membrane potential in HLD model cells. The ferroptosis inducer Erastin reversed these effects of curcumin. WB revealed that curcumin promoted Nrf2, HO-1, and GPX4 protein expression in HLD model cells, and the Nrf2 inhibitor ML385 reversed the effects of curcumin. CONCLUSION Curcumin demonstrates a protective role by expelling copper and inhibiting ferroptosis, activating the Nrf2/HO-1/GPX4 signaling pathway in HLD.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element to maintain good health. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence of selenium deficiency and its effect on overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Patients who underwent serum selenium level measurement between January 2021 and April 2022 were enrolled. The factors associated with selenium deficiency (≤10 µg/dL) and the association between selenium deficiency and OHE were analyzed. Among 98 eligible patients, 24% were observed to have selenium deficiency, with a median serum selenium level of 11.8 µg/dL. The serum selenium levels were significantly lower in patients with cirrhosis than in those with chronic hepatitis (10.9 µg/dL vs. 12.4 µg/dL; p = 0.03). The serum selenium levels were negatively correlated with mac-2 binding protein glycan isomer, the FIB-4 index, albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score, and Child-Pugh score. The ALBI score remained significantly associated with selenium deficiency (odds ratio, 3.23; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.56-6.67). During a median follow-up period of 2.9 months, nine patients experienced OHE. Selenium deficiency was associated with OHE (hazard ratio, 12.75; 95% CI, 2.54-70.22). Selenium deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with CLD and is associated with an increased risk of OHE development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to metals has been associated with liver-related disease. Few studies have explored the effect of sex stratification on adolescent liver function. METHOD From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2016), 1143 subjects aged 12-19 years were selected for analysis. The outcome variables were the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. RESULTS The results showed a positive association between serum zinc and ALT in boys (odds ratio [OR], 2.37; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-5.06). Serum mercury was associated with an increase in ALT level in girls (OR, 2.73; 95% CI, 1.14-6.57). Mechanistically, the efficacy mediated by total cholesterol accounted for 24.38% and 6.19% of the association between serum zinc and ALT. CONCLUSIONS The results imply that serum heavy metals were associated with the risk of liver injury, possibly mediated by serum cholesterol, in adolescents.

Abstract
Trace elements and minerals play a significant role in human health and diseases. In recent years, ionomics has been rapidly and widely applied to explore the distribution, regulation, and crosstalk of different elements in various physiological and pathological processes. On the basis of multi-elemental analytical techniques and bioinformatics methods, it is possible to elucidate the relationship between the metabolism and homeostasis of diverse elements and common diseases. The current review aims to provide an overview of recent advances in the application of ionomics in metabolic disease research. We mainly focuses on the studies about ionomic or multi-elemental profiling of different biological samples for several major types of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, which reveal distinct and dynamic patterns of ion contents and their potential benefits in the detection and prognosis of these illnesses. Accumulation of copper, selenium, and environmental toxic metals as well as deficiency of zinc and magnesium appear to be the most significant risk factors for the majority of metabolic diseases, suggesting that imbalance of these elements may be involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Moreover, each type of metabolic diseases has shown a relatively unique distribution of ions in biofluids and hair/nails from patients, which might serve as potential indicators for the respective disease. Overall, ionomics not only improves our understanding of the association between elemental dyshomeostasis and the development of metabolic disease but also assists in the identification of new potential diagnostic and prognostic markers in translational medicine.

Abstract
To evaluate metal(loid) contamination in tea leaves and assess health risks of tea drinking in China, metal(loid) concentrations in tea leaves from major tea-producing provinces were determined. Nine metal(loid)s (Al, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb) were measured in a total of 217 tea samples representing five tea varieties (black tea, dark tea, green tea, oolong tea and white tea) from seven major tea-producing provinces of China (Fujian, Guangdong, Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Yunnan and Zhejiang). The results indicated that tea samples from Hunan Province had the highest metal(loid) concentrations, likely due its high prevalence of heavy industrial activities and soil pollution. The concentrations of As and Pb in dark tea were markedly higher than those in other tea varieties. A strong Spearman correlation coefficient (0.78, P < 0.001) of As and Pb in all the tea varieties has also been found, indicating their similar sources. Human health risk assessment for the nine analyzed metal(loid)s indicated that co-exposure to these metal(loids) may not cause significant health risks (hazard index [HI] > 1 suggests considerable health risks). Among the five tea varieties, metal(loids)s in dark and green tea induced relatively higher health risks, with 90th percentile HI values approached 0.8. Co (53.6 %-84.5 %) and Al (3.33 %-15.8 %) made the highest contributions to the HI of the selected tea commodities. Thus, public and regulatory agencies should reduce excessive Co and Al accumulation in these tea varieties during cultivation and production processes.

Abstract
Background and Aim Secondary bioactive compounds of medicinal plants exert anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and metabolism-modulating effects. This study aimed to investigate the effect of feeding 4-hexylresorcinol, as well as its combinations with gamma-octalactone and 7-hydroxycoumarin, on the digestibility of dietary nutrients, weight gain, and quality characteristics of the meat and liver of Arbor Acres broiler chickens. Materials and Methods The following feeding scheme was applied on the chickens: Control, basal diet (BD); I experimental, BD + 4-hexylresorcinol at 0.5 mg/kg of live weight per day; II experimental, BD + 4-hexylresorcinol + gamma-octalactone at 0.4 mg/kg of live weight per day; III experimental, BD + 4-hexylresorcinol + 7-hydroxycoumarin at 0.1 and 0.15 mg/kg of live weight per day; and IV experimental, BD + 4-hexylresorcinol + gamma-octalactone + 7-hydroxycoumarin at 0.05, 0.15, and 0.01 mg/kg of live weight per day. Results Chickens in I, II, and IV experimental groups at the age of 35 days showed superior live weight than chickens in the control group. Supplementation with all the tested additives, except the combination 4-hexylresorcinol + 7-hydroxycoumarin, significantly increased the digestibility coefficients of dietary nutrients. Supplementation with the combinations 4-hexylresorcinol + gamma-octalactone and 4-hexylresorcinol + gamma-octalactone + 7-hydroxycoumarin significantly increased the amount of fat in the pectoral muscles. However, the mass fraction of fat in the thigh muscles of broiler chickens decreased in II, III, and IV experimental groups. The pectoral muscles of broiler chickens in experimental Group IV contained small amounts of lysine, tyrosine, histidine, leucine-isoleucine, methionine, valine, proline, threonine, serine, alanine, and glycine. Supplementation with pure 4-hexylresorcinol significantly reduced the levels of lysine, phenylalanine, histidine, leucine-isoleucine, methionine, valine, proline, threonine, and alanine in the thigh muscles. However, supplementation with pure 4-hexylresorcinol significantly increased the concentrations of P, Fe, Se, Zn, and B and decreased the concentrations of I, Ni, V, Al, and Pb in the pectoral muscles. Supplementation with the combination 4-hexylresorcinol + gamma-octalactone + 7-hydroxycoumarin resulted in the accumulation of Ca, Co, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn, and Li and a decrease in the concentrations of K, Mg, and V. Conclusion Supplementation with all the tested additives, except the combination 4-hexylresorcinol + 7-hydroxycoumarin, exerted a positive effect on the indicators of live weight gain and dietary nutrient digestibility in broiler chickens. Supplementation with the combinations 4-hexylresorcinol + gamma-octalactone and 4-hexylresorcinol + gamma-octalactone + 7-hydroxycoumarin increased the amount of fat in the pectoral muscles but decreased it in the thigh muscles. Supplementation with all the tested additives decreased the concentrations of I in the pectoral muscles and Zn in the thigh muscles in all the experimental groups compared with those in the control group.

Abstract
We have clarified that malnutrition risk evaluated by the Royal Free Hospital-Nutritional Prioritizing Tool (RFH-NPT) is prevalent in patients with cirrhosis. Mineral elements (zinc, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, and calcium) are micronutrients essential for versatile physiological processes and cellular bioactivities. However, the association between these trace elements and integral nutritional status is unclear in decompensated cirrhotics. We collected blood samples from hospitalized patients with cirrhosis, and serum trace element concentrations were examined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Association of trace element levels with high malnutrition risk was determined by multivariate logistic regression model. Sera from 141 patients with decompensated cirrhosis were analyzed for a total of six trace element concentrations. No significant differences were observed between high and low/moderate RFH-NPT malnutrition risk groups with the exception of zinc. The serum zinc concentrations were significantly decreased in patients at high malnutrition risk when compared to low/moderate subjects (57.9 vs 68.1 μg/dL, P = 0.006). In terms of receiver operating characteristics curve, zinc < 64 μg/dL represented best discriminative capability with an area of 0.635 (95% CI: 0.542, 0.728). Patients in the group with zinc < 64 μg/dL had elevated RFH-NPT and MELD score, higher proportion of Child-Pugh class C and ascites, higher CRP, lower albumin and sodium than in the group with zinc ≥ 64 μg/dL. Zinc < 64 μg/dL was an independent risk factor for high malnutrition risk. Low levels of serum zinc referring to less than 64 μg/dL were associated with poor integral nutritional status in cirrhosis.

Abstract
The associations of circulating trace elements with sleep health have attracted increasing attention given their potential link. However, there is scant data on the relationship between serum trace elements and abnormal sleep duration patterns in cirrhosis. We aimed to investigate these associations with the purpose of identifying modifiable risk factors. The blood samples were collected from inpatients with cirrhosis, and serum levels of several trace elements were assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Self-reported sleep duration was categorized to short- (< 7 h/night), optimal (7-8 h/night), and long-sleep duration (> 8 h/night). The dose-response trends and associations of trace elements levels with sleep duration were determined by restricted cubic splines (RCS) and logistic regression, respectively. Cirrhotic patients with optimal sleep duration experienced the highest levels of serum Zinc (Zn) and the lowest values of copper to zinc ratio (CZr). RCS model corroborated non-linear associations of serum Zn and CZr against sleep duration. Multiple regression analysis showed that both CZr (short vs optimal sleep duration: OR 4.785, P < 0.001; long vs optimal sleep duration: OR 4.150, P = 0.019) and serum Zn levels (short vs optimal sleep duration: OR 0.985, P = 0.040; long vs optimal sleep duration: OR 0.956, P = 0.008) serve as independent risk factors for sleep duration abnormalities. In conclusion, our findings unraveled a close relationship of serum Zn and CZr with sleep duration in cirrhosis. Further trace element-based therapy such as Zn supplementation may be novel approach to reverse this sleep problem.

Abstract
We aimed to verify antitumor effects of zinc acetate on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in vitro. Five HCC cell lines (HepG2, Hep3B, Huh7, HLE and Alex) were used to evaluate the antitumor effects of zinc acetate. Cell viability was determined by the Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. The cell-cycle alteration was evaluated by a flow cytometric analysis and the detection of cell cycle-related proteins. Apoptosis was determined based on the caspase-cleaved cytokeratin 18 (cCK18) levels. The microRNAs (miRNAs) related to an antitumor effect of zinc acetate were identified using microarrays. Zinc acetate significantly inhibited the proliferation of HCC cells in a dose-dependent manner. The treatment with zinc acetate resulted in significantly increased cCK18 levels in the supernatant and enhanced the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in HCC cells. The flow cytometric analysis revealed an increase of HCC cells in the S and G2/M phases by the administration of zinc acetate, and the expressions of Cdk2 and cyclin E were increased. The miRNA expression profile of the HCC cells treated with zinc acetate was extremely different from that of the untreated HCC cells. These results suggest that the zinc acetate supplementation induces the apoptosis of HCC cells, but does not affect the cell cycle progression. Upregulation of HO-1 and the alteration of miRNAs' profile may be involved in antitumor effects of zinc acetate in HCC cells.

Abstract
The associations between selenium and liver stiffness and steatosis remain uncertain. This study aimed to explore the clinical relevance of selenium with liver stiffness and steatosis in adults from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Subjects with excessive alcohol consumption and hepatitis B or C infection were excluded. Liver stiffness and steatosis were detected by transient elastography. Dietary selenium intakes and blood selenium concentrations were included as exposures. In multivariate analysis without adjustment for obesity, higher dietary selenium intakes (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1) were positively associated with liver stiffness in females (odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 2.64 (1.88-3.70)), and were positively associated with liver steatosis overall (1.54 (1.20-1.97)) and also in males (1.55 (1.06-2.26)). In multivariate analysis without adjustment for obesity, higher blood selenium concentrations (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1) were positively associated with liver steatosis overall (1.33 (1.02-1.76)) and also in males (1.56 (1.13-2.16)). After further adjustment for obesity, the abovementioned associations remain significant between dietary selenium intakes and liver stiffness in females (2.29 (1.69-3.12)) and liver steatosis overall (1.37 (1.01-1.86)), and between blood selenium concentrations and liver steatosis in males (1.67 (1.25-2.21)). Dose-response analysis showed that the abovementioned associations were linear. However, dietary selenium intakes meeting the recommended daily allowance (≥ 55 µg/day) were not associated with liver stiffness (0.99 (0.62-1.55)) and steatosis (1.01 (0.69-1.49)). In conclusion, higher dietary selenium intakes and blood selenium concentrations were positively associated with liver stiffness and steatosis, and obesity may partially account for the observed associations.

Abstract
A trace element is a chemical element with a concentration (or other measures of an amount) that is very low. The essential TEs, such as copper (Cu), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and the electrolyte magnesium (Mg) are among the most commonly studied micronutrients. Each element has been shown to play a distinctive role in human health, and TEs, such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), are among the essential elements required for the organisms' well-being as they play crucial roles in several metabolic pathways where they act as enzyme co-factors, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents. Epidemics of infectious diseases are becoming more frequent and spread at a faster pace around the world, which has resulted in major impacts on the economy and health systems. Different trace elements have been reported to have substantial roles in the pathogenesis of viral infections. Micronutrients have been proposed in various studies as determinants of liver disorders, COVID-19 and T2DM risks. This review article sheds light on the roles and mechanisms of micronutrients in the pathogenesis and prevention of chronic hepatitis B, C and E, as well as Coronavirus-19 infection and type-2 diabetes mellitus. An update on the status of the aforementioned micronutrients in pre-clinical and clinical settings is also briefly summarized.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been significantly growing in recent years. Although the pathophysiology of fibrosis progression in NAFLD is not yet known, oxidative stress and inflammation have been known to have a major role in the development of NASH. Understanding the impact of micronutrients in NAFLD could potentially help us better understand NAFLD pathogenesis. AIMS Assessing the serum levels of Zn, Se, and Vitamin E and their relation to the development of hepatic fibrosis in NAFLD patients. METHODS This study included 80 NAFLD patients and 40 healthy controls. All of the patients were subjected to abdominal ultrasound and FibroScan examination (to estimate hepatic fibrosis and steatosis degree), and the serum levels of Zn, Se, and vitamin E were evaluated. RESULTS A statistically significant difference in the serum levels of Zn and Se was observed between the NAFLD group and the control group (P-value = 0.04 and 0.05, respectively). The serum levels of Zn and Se were independently related to the presence of hepatic fibrosis in NAFLD. However, serum vitamin E was not related to the severity of NAFLD. Furthermore, no significant difference in the levels of Zn, Se, and vitamin E was observed between the different groups of NAFLD patients categorized according to the degree of steatosis and the control group. CONCLUSIONS Reduced serum levels of Zn and Se can be considered a possible risk factor for hepatic fibrosis in NAFLD. Deficiency in these micronutrients could play a role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD.

Abstract
Background: The potential role of selenium in preventing chronic liver diseases remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to summarize the available evidence from observational studies and intervention trials that had evaluated the associations between body selenium status and chronic liver diseases. Methods: We comprehensively searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library from inception to April 2021. The study protocol was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42020210144). Relative risks (RR) for the highest versus the lowest level of selenium and standard mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were pooled using random-effects models. Heterogeneity and publication bias were evaluated using the I2 statistic and Egger’s regression test, respectively. Results: There were 50 studies with 9875 cases and 12975 population controls in the final analysis. Patients with hepatitis (SMD = −1.78, 95% CI: −2.22 to −1.34), liver cirrhosis (SMD = −2.06, 95% CI: −2.48 to −1.63), and liver cancer (SMD = −2.71, 95% CI: −3.31 to −2.11) had significantly lower selenium levels than controls, whereas there was no significant difference in patients with fatty liver diseases (SMD = 1.06, 95% CI: −1.78 to 3.89). Moreover, the meta-analysis showed that a higher selenium level was significantly associated with a 41% decrease in the incidence of significant advanced chronic liver diseases (RR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.49 to 0.72). Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggested that both body selenium status and selenium intake were negatively associated with hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. However, the associations for fatty liver diseases were conflicting and need to be established in prospective trials.

Abstract
Decompensated liver cirrhosis has a dismal prognosis, with patients surviving on average for 2-4 years after the first diagnosis of ascites. Albumin is an important tool in the therapy of cirrhotic ascites. By virtue of its oncotic properties, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction after paracentesis. Treatment with albumin also counteracts the development of hepatorenal syndrome and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. More recently, the positive impact of long-term albumin supplementation in liver disease, based on its pleiotropic non-oncotic activities, has been recognized. These include transport of endo- and exogenous substances, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities, and stabilizing effects on the endothelium. Besides the growing recognition that effective albumin therapy requires adjustment of the plasma level to normal physiological values, the search for substances with adjuvant activities is becoming increasingly important. More than 75% of patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis do not only present with hypoalbuminemia but also with zinc deficiency. There is a close relationship between albumin and the essential trace element zinc. First and foremost, albumin is the main carrier of zinc in plasma, and is hence critical for systemic distribution of zinc. In this review, we discuss important functions of albumin in the context of metabolic, immunological, oxidative, transport, and distribution processes, alongside crucial functions and effects of zinc and their mutual dependencies. In particular, we focus on the major role of chronic inflammatory processes in pathogenesis and progression of liver cirrhosis and how albumin therapy and zinc supplementation may affect these processes.

Abstract
The highlands evoke both fascination and awe. Regardless of the reason to live in the highlands, symptoms related to altitude sickness are unbearable because of low atmospheric pressure, low oxygen concentration, strong ultraviolet radiation, cold, and psychological factors. Food and herbal medicines and/or health-care foods have protected highland dwellers owing to their multisystem regulation. These versatile products combine health-care properties with medical values by enhancing immunity, relieving physical fatigue, improving sleep, and augmenting hypoxia tolerance, with rare side effects. We therefore aimed to provide a more comprehensive analysis of these nutraceuticals, which can be used to prevent and treat symptoms of altitude hypoxia in the Chinese market. Finally, we dissect a new perspective for their promotion and development from molecular aspects.

Abstract
Despite recent advances, the causes of and effective therapies for pediatric chronic cholestatic diseases remain elusive, and many patients progress to liver failure and need liver transplantation. Malnutrition is a common complication in these patients and is a well-recognized, tremendous challenge for the clinician. We undertook a narrative review of both recent and relevant older literature, published during the last 20 years, for studies linking nutrition to pediatric chronic cholestasis. The collected data confirm that malnutrition and failure to thrive are associated with increased risks of morbidity and mortality, and they also affect the outcomes of liver transplantation, including long-term survival. Malnutrition in children with chronic liver disease is multifactorial and with multiple potential nutritional deficiencies. To improve life expectancy and the quality of life, patients require careful assessments and appropriate management of their nutritional statuses by multidisciplinary teams, which can identify and/or prevent specific deficiencies and initiate appropriate interventions. Solutions available for the clinical management of these children in general, as well as those directed to specific etiologies, are summarized. We particularly focus on fat-soluble vitamin deficiency and malnutrition due to fat malabsorption. Supplemental feeding, including medium-chain triglycerides, essential fatty acids, branched-chain amino acids, and the extra calories needed to overcome the consequences of anorexia and high energy requirements, is reviewed. Future studies should address the need for further improving commercially available and nutritionally complete infant milk formulae for the dietary management of this fragile category of patients. The aid of a specialist dietitian, educational training regarding nutritional guidelines for stakeholders, and improving family nutritional health literacy appear essential.

Abstract
Adequate maternal selenium level is essential for immune response and healthy pregnancy. This study aimed to shed light on the selenium status of pregnant women with COVID-19 and the effects of potential deficiency in serum selenium levels. Totally 141 pregnant women, 71 of them were COVID-19 patients, in different trimesters were included in the study. Maternal serum selenium levels, demographic and clinical parameters were determined. Serum selenium levels of pregnant women in the second (p: .0003) and third (p: .001) trimesters with COVID-19 were significantly lower than in the healthy group. Maternal selenium level was found to be negatively correlated with gestational week (p < .0001, r: -.541), D-dimer (p: .0002, r: -.363) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) level (p: .02, r: -.243). In the second trimester, serum selenium level positively correlated with white blood cell (p: .002, r: .424), neutrophil (p: .006, r: .39), lymphocyte (p: .004, r: .410) count and hemoglobin (p: .02, r: .323), hematocrit (p: .008, r: .38) status. In the third trimester, it was found that maternal selenium level positively correlated with monocyte (p: .04, r: .353) and negatively correlated with C-reactive protein level (p: .03, r: -.384). Serum selenium level was gradually decreased during the pregnancy period, however, this natural decrease was enhanced together with COVID-19 infection. The reason might be increased selenium needs depended on the immune response against infection. The decrease in maternal selenium level was found to be related to IL-6 and D-dimer levels, which indicate selenium's role in disease progression.

Abstract
Glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide particularly concentrated in the liver, is the most important thiol reducing agent involved in the modulation of redox processes. It has also been demonstrated that GSH cannot be considered only as a mere free radical scavenger but that it takes part in the network governing the choice between survival, necrosis and apoptosis as well as in altering the function of signal transduction and transcription factor molecules. The purpose of the present review is to provide an overview on the molecular biology of the GSH system; therefore, GSH synthesis, metabolism and regulation will be reviewed. The multiple GSH functions will be described, as well as the importance of GSH compartmentalization into distinct subcellular pools and inter-organ transfer. Furthermore, we will highlight the close relationship existing between GSH content and the pathogenesis of liver disease, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), chronic cholestatic injury, ischemia/reperfusion damage, hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatocellular carcinoma. Finally, the potential therapeutic benefits of GSH and GSH-related medications, will be described for each liver disorder taken into account.

Abstract
The trace element selenium (Se) is taken up from the diet and is metabolized mainly by hepatocytes. Selenoprotein P (SELENOP) constitutes the liver-derived Se transporter. Biosynthesis of extracellular glutathione peroxidase (GPx3) in kidney depends on SELENOP-mediated Se supply. We hypothesized that peri-operative Se status may serve as a useful prognostic marker for the outcome in patients undergoing liver transplantation due to hepatocellular carcinoma. Serum samples from liver cancer patients were routinely collected before and after transplantation. Concentrations of serum SELENOP and total Se as well as GPx3 activity were determined by standardized tests and related to survival, etiology of cirrhosis/carcinoma, preoperative neutrophiles, lymphocytes, thyrotropin (TSH) and Child-Pugh and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores. A total of 221 serum samples from 79 transplanted patients were available for analysis. The Se and SELENOP concentrations were on average below the reference ranges of healthy subjects. Patients with ethanol toxicity-dependent etiology showed particularly low SELENOP and Se concentrations and GPx3 activity. Longitudinal analysis indicated declining Se concentrations in non-survivors. We conclude that severe liver disease necessitating organ replacement is characterized by a pronounced Se deficit before, during and after transplantation. A recovering Se status after surgery is associated with positive prognosis, and an adjuvant Se supplementation may, thus, support convalescence.
