Abstract
Multifunctional peptides derived from various food sources, including ancestral grains, hold significant promise for managing metabolic syndrome. These bioactive peptides exhibit diverse properties that collectively contribute to improving the components of metabolic syndrome. In this study, we investigated the in vitro multifunctionality of six peptides (PW, PM, SW, PPG, PW, and IW) identified through in silico analysis and chemically synthesized. These peptides were evaluated for their potential to address metabolic syndrome-related activities such as antidiabetic, antiobesity, antihypertensive, and antioxidative properties. Assessment included their capacity to inhibit key enzymes associated with these activities, as well as their free radical scavenging and cellular antioxidative activities. Principal component analysis was employed to cluster the peptides according to their multifunctionality. Our results revealed that peptides containing tryptophan (SW, PW, and IW) exhibited the most promising multifunctional attributes, with SW showing particularly high potential. This multifunctional peptide represents a promising avenue for addressing metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a disease condition incorporating the abnormal accumulation of various metabolic components, including overweight or abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and abnormal glucose tolerance, hypertension, atherosclerosis, or dyslipidemia. It has been proved that the gut microbiota and microbial-derived products play an important role in regulating lipid metabolism and thus the onset and development of MetS. Previous studies have demonstrated that oligosaccharides with prebiotic effects, such as chitosan oligosaccharides, can regulate the structure of the microbial community and its derived products to control weight and reduce MetS associated with obesity. Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS), natural products extracted from degraded alginate salts with high solubility and extensive biological activity, have also been found to modulate gut microbiota. This review aims to summarize experimental evidence on the positive effects of AOS on different types of MetS while providing insights into mechanisms through which AOS regulates gut microbiota for preventing and treating MetS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES Changes in the stool metabolome have been poorly studied in the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Moreover, few studies have explored the relationship of stool metabolites with circulating metabolites. Here, we investigated the associations between stool and blood metabolites, the MetS and systemic inflammation. METHODS We analyzed data from 1,370 participants of the KORA FF4 study (Germany). Metabolites were measured by Metabolon, Inc. (untargeted) in stool, and using the AbsoluteIDQ® p180 kit (targeted) in blood. Multiple linear regression models, adjusted for dietary pattern, age, sex, physical activity, smoking status and alcohol intake, were used to estimate the associations of metabolites with the MetS, its components and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels. Partial correlation and Multi-Omics Factor Analysis (MOFA) were used to investigate the relationship between stool and blood metabolites. RESULTS The MetS was significantly associated with 170 stool and 82 blood metabolites. The MetS components with the highest number of associations were triglyceride levels (stool) and HDL levels (blood). Additionally, 107 and 27 MetS-associated metabolites (in stool and blood, respectively) showed significant associations with hsCRP levels. We found low partial correlation coefficients between stool and blood metabolites. MOFA did not detect shared variation across the two datasets. CONCLUSIONS The MetS, particularly dyslipidemia, is associated with multiple stool and blood metabolites that are also associated with systemic inflammation. Further studies are necessary to validate our findings and to characterize metabolic alterations in the MetS. Although our analyses point to weak correlations between stool and blood metabolites, additional studies using integrative approaches are warranted.

Abstract
The present study aimed to develop and optimize solidified supersaturated self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems (SNEDDS) for the combined administration of antihypertensive, antihyperglycemic, and antihyperlipidemic drugs to enhance their solubility and dissolution during the treatment of metabolic syndrome. Various SNEDDS formulations were prepared and subjected to pharmaceutical assessment. The solubility of candesartan (CC), glibenclamide (GB), and rosuvastatin (RC) in SNEDDS and supersaturated SNEDDS formulations was evaluated. The optimized formulation was solidified using Syloid adsorbent at different ratios. Pharmaceutical characterization of the formulations included particle size, zeta potential, in-vitro dissolution, PXRD, FTIR, and SEM analysis. The prepared optimized formulation (F6) was able to form homogeneous nanoemulsion droplets without phase separation, which is composed of Tween 20: PEG-400: Capmul MCM (4: 3: 3). It was mixed with 5% PVP-K30 to prepare a supersaturated liquid SNEDDS formulation (F9). In addition, it was found that the addition of PVP-K30 significantly increased solubility CC and GB from 20.46 ± 0.48 and 6.73 ± 0.05 to 27.67 ± 1.72 and 9.45 ± 0.32 mg/g, respectively. In-vitro dissolution study revealed that liquid and solid SNEDD formulations remarkably improved the dissolution rates of CC, GB, and RC compared to pure drugs. XRPD and FTIR analysis revealed that all drugs present in an amorphous state within prepared solidified supersaturated SNEDDS formulation. SEM images showed that liquid SNEDDS formulation was successfully adsorbed on the surface of Syloid. Overall, optimized F9 and solidified supersaturated SNEDDS formulations showed superior performance in enhancing drug solubility and dissolution rate. The present study revealed that the proposed triple combination therapy of metabolic syndrome holds a promising strategy during the treatment of metabolic syndrome. Further in-vivo studies are required to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of prepared solidified supersaturated SNEDDS formulation.

Abstract
Background While several risk factors for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) have been recognized, the pathogenesis of KOA and the causal relationship between modifiable risk factors and KOA in genetic epidemiology remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the causal relationship between KOA and its risk factors. Methods Data were obtained from published Genome-Wide Association study (GWAS) databases. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed with genetic variants associated with risk factors as instrumental variables and KOA as outcome. First, inverse variance weighting was used as the main MR analysis method, and then a series of sensitivity analyses were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the causal relationship between them. Results Univariate forward MR analysis revealed that genetically predicted hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism/thyrotoxicosis, educational level, income level, metabolic syndrome (MS), essential hypertension, height, hot drink temperature, diet (abstaining from sugar-sweetened or wheat products), and psychological and psychiatric disorders (stress, depression, and anxiety) were causally associated with KOA. Reverse MR exhibits a causal association between KOA and educational attainment. Multivariate MR analysis adjusted for the inclusion of potential mediators, such as body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol consumption, and sex, exhibited some variation in causal effects. However, hyperthyroidism/thyrotoxicosis had a significant causal effect on KOA, and there was good evidence that height, hypothyroidism, educational level, psychological and psychiatric disorders (stress, depression, and anxiety), and abstaining from wheat products had an independent causal relationship. The mediating effect of BMI as a mediator was also identified. Conclusion This study used MR to validate the causal relationship between KOA and its risk factors, providing new insights for preventing and treating KOA in clinical practice and for developing public health policies.

Abstract
This study examined the suppressive effects of 16 selected plant-based foods on α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase and their antioxidant properties. Among these, the bark of Cinnamomum cassia (Cinnamon, WLN-FM 15) showed the highest inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and the highest antioxidant activity. Additionally, WLN-FM 15 showed promising results in the other tests. To further identify the bioactive constituents of WLN-FM 15, a multi-bioactivity-labeled molecular networking approach was used through a combination of GNPS-based molecular networking, DPPH-HPLC, and affinity-based ultrafiltration-HPLC. A total of nine procyanidins were identified as antioxidants and inhibitors of α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase in WLN-FM 15. Subsequently, procyanidins A1, A2, B1, and C1 were isolated, and their efficacy was confirmed through functional assays. In summary, WLN-FM 15 has the potential to serve as a functional food ingredient with the procyanidins as its bioactive constituents. These results also suggest that the multi-bioactivity-labeled molecular networking approach is reliable for identifying bioactive constituents in plant-based foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global health challenge, with a rising rate in line with other metabolic diseases. We aimed to assess the global prevalence of NAFLD in adult and pediatric populations. METHODS PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were systematically searched up to May 2023. Heterogeneity was assessed using Cochran's Q test and I2 statistics, and random-effects model was used for meta-analysis. Analyses were performed using STATA version 18. RESULTS A total of 479 studies with 78,001,755 participants from 38 countries were finally included. The global prevalence of NAFLD was estimated to be 30.2% (95% CI: 28.7-31.7%). Regionally, the prevalence of NAFLD was as follows: Asia 30.9% (95% CI: 29.2-32.6%), Australia 16.1% (95% CI: 9.0-24.8%), Europe 30.2% (95% CI: 25.6-35.0%), North America 29% (95% CI: 25.8-32.3%), and South America 34% (95% CI: 16.9-53.5%). Countries with a higher human development index (HDI) had significantly lower prevalence of NAFLD (coefficient = -0.523, p = 0.005). Globally, the prevalence of NAFLD in men and women was 36.6% (95% CI: 34.7-38.4%) and 25.5% (95% CI: 23.9-27.1%), respectively. The prevalence of NAFLD in adults, adults with obesity, children, and children with obesity was 30.2% (95% CI: 28.8-31.7%), 57.5% (95% CI: 43.6-70.9%), 14.3% (95% CI: 10.3-18.8%), and 38.0% (95% CI: 31.5-44.7%), respectively. CONCLUSION The prevalence of NAFLD is remarkably high, particularly in countries with lower HDI. This substantial prevalence in both adults and children underscores the need for disease management protocols to reduce the burden.

Abstract
The incidence of diabetes, including type 2 diabetes (T2DM), is increasing sharply worldwide. To reverse this, more effective approaches in prevention and treatment are needed. In our review, we sought to summarize normal insulin action and the pathways that primarily influence the development of T2DM. Normal insulin action involves mitogenic and metabolic pathways, as both are important in normal metabolic processes, regeneration, etc. However, through excess energy, both can be hyperactive or attenuated/inactive leading to disturbances in the cellular and systemic regulation with the consequence of cellular stress and systemic inflammation. In this review, we detailed the beneficial molecular changes caused by some important components of nutrition and by exercise, which act in the same molecular targets as the developed drugs, and can revert the damaged pathways. Moreover, these induce entire networks of regulatory mechanisms and proteins to restore unbalanced homeostasis, proving their effectiveness as preventive and complementary therapies. These are the main steps for success in prevention and treatment of developed diseases to rid the body of excess energy, both from stored fats and from overnutrition, while facilitating fat burning with adequate, regular exercise in healthy people, and together with necessary drug treatment as required in patients with insulin resistance and T2DM.

Abstract
Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a chronic liver condition of increasing prevalence, is closely related to various metabolic disorders. Hemoglobin, a protein that transports oxygen in red blood cells, is the focus of this study, which seeks to investigate its potential association with NAFLD. Methods We selected 6,516 eligible adult participants from the United States using the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database for cross-sectional analyses. We analyzed the association of hemoglobin with NAFLD using weighted logistic regression models. Results The study performed a weighted logistic regression modeling analysis, which verified that hemoglobin levels were positively associated with NAFLD, especially in the higher hemoglobin quartile groups. Subgroup analyses revealed no significant interactions, demonstrating the robustness of the model. The analysis of mediation effects showed that Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase, Alanine Aminotransferase, and triglycerides were important mediating variables in the relationship between hemoglobin and NAFLD. Conclusion Increased hemoglobin levels were found to be significantly and independently associated with an increased NAFLD risk. This insight is crucial for the risk assessment and early detection of NAFLD, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance in individuals with higher hemoglobin levels.

Abstract
Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a severe and frequent complication of obesity, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes characterized by progressive distal-to-proximal peripheral nerve degeneration. However, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying PN, and whether these mechanisms change during PN progression, is currently lacking. Here, gene expression data were obtained from distal (sciatic nerve; SCN) and proximal (dorsal root ganglia; DRG) injury sites of a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model of obesity/prediabetes at early and late disease stages. Self-organizing map and differentially expressed gene analyses followed by pathway enrichment analysis identified genes and pathways altered across disease stage and injury site. Pathways related to immune response, inflammation, and glucose and lipid metabolism were consistently dysregulated with HFD-induced PN, irrespective of injury site. However, regulation of oxidative stress was unique to the SCN while dysregulated Hippo and Notch signaling were only observed in the DRG. The role of the immune system and inflammation in disease progression was supported by an increase in the percentage of immune cells in the SCN with PN progression. Finally, when comparing these data to transcriptomic signatures from human patients with PN, we observed conserved pathways related to metabolic dysregulation across species, highlighting the translational relevance of our mouse data. Our findings demonstrate that PN is associated with distinct site-specific molecular re-programming in the peripheral nervous system, identifying novel, clinically relevant therapeutic targets.

Abstract
A study on 81 individuals (18-75 years old) with mildly impaired fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations (98-125 mg/dL) was undertaken to investigate the tolerability of a food supplement (FS) based on Zea mays and Gymnema sylvestre extracts, zinc, and chromium and its efficacy on glucose and lipid metabolism. The subjects were randomized into three groups (27 in each group) and supplemented with one or two tablet(s)/day of FS (groups 1 and 2, respectively), or two tablets/day of placebo (group 3). Blood sampling was carried out at baseline (t0) and after a 3-month treatment (t1), and biochemical parameters associated with glucose and lipid metabolism and kidney and liver toxicity were evaluated. Compared to the placebo, FBG and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) were significantly (p < 0.001) reduced in group 1 subjects. In contrast, at the doses of one and two tablet(s)/day, the FS exerted no effect on the other parameters examined. We conclude that in subjects with slightly impaired FBG, ingestion of a FS based on Z. mays and G. sylvestre extracts, zinc, and chromium over 3 months lowers FBG and modulates glucose homeostasis by improving glucose metabolism. These beneficial effects occur in the absence of biochemical evidence of kidney and liver toxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of medical conditions and risk factors correlating with insulin resistance that increase the risk of developing cardiometabolic health problems. The specific criteria for diagnosing MetS vary among different medical organizations but are typically based on the evaluation of abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. A unique, quantitative and independent estimation of the risk of MetS based only on quantitative biomarkers is highly desirable for the comparison between patients and to study the individual progression of the disease in a quantitative manner. METHODS We used NMR-based metabolomics on a large cohort of donors (n = 21,323; 37.5% female) to investigate the diagnostic value of serum or serum combined with urine to estimate the MetS risk. Specifically, we have determined 41 circulating metabolites and 112 lipoprotein classes and subclasses in serum samples and this information has been integrated with metabolic profiles extracted from urine samples. RESULTS We have developed MetSCORE, a metabolic model of MetS that combines serum lipoprotein and metabolite information. MetSCORE discriminate patients with MetS (independently identified using the WHO criterium) from general population, with an AUROC of 0.94 (95% CI 0.920-0.952, p < 0.001). MetSCORE is also able to discriminate the intermediate phenotypes, identifying the early risk of MetS in a quantitative way and ranking individuals according to their risk of undergoing MetS (for general population) or according to the severity of the syndrome (for MetS patients). CONCLUSIONS We believe that MetSCORE may be an insightful tool for early intervention and lifestyle modifications, potentially preventing the aggravation of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a simple and inexpensive new marker of insulin resistance that is being increasingly used for the clinical prediction of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Nevertheless, there are only a few comparative studies on its predictive capacity for MetS versus those using the traditional homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). We conducted a cross-sectional study using a database from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999 March to 2020 pre-pandemic period). Using statistical methods, we compared the predictive abilities of the TyG index and HOMA (including HOMA of insulin resistance [HOMA-IR] and HOMA of beta-cell function [HOMA-β]) for MetS. A total of 34,195 participants were enrolled and divided into the MetS group (23.1%) or no MetS group (76.9%) according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) diagnostic criteria. After applying weighted data, the baseline characteristics of the population were described. Following the exclusion of medication influences, the final count was 31,304 participants. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that while distinguishing between MetS and no MetS, the TyG index had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.827 (sensitivity = 71.9%, specificity = 80.5%), and the cutoff was 8.75, slightly outperforming HOMA-IR (AUC = 0.784) and HOMA-β (AUC = 0.614) with a significance of P < 0.01. The prevalence of MetS in the total population calculated using the TyG index cutoff value was 30.9%, which was higher than that reported in the IDF diagnostic criteria. Weighted data analysis using univariate and multivariate logistic regression displayed an independent association between elevated TyG and HOMA-IR with the risk of MetS. Subgroup analysis further revealed differences in the predictive ability of the TyG index among adult populations across various genders and ethnicities, whereas such differences were not observed for children and adolescents. The TyG index is slightly better than HOMA in predicting MetS and may identify more patients with MetS; thus, its applications in a clinical setting can be appropriately increased.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review provides the latest insight into the impact of consuming plant-based protein for older people. RECENT FINDINGS According to the latest data, a healthy diet rich in plant-based-protein-rich-food could promote healthy aging. This health effect is partly because of the amino acid composition of proteins, as well as to the important constituents such as fiber and bioactive compounds found in the matrix. Furthermore, even though animal protein is more effective at stimulating muscle protein synthesis, a high consumption of plant protein (beyond 31 g/day) appears to enhance physical performance and reduce the risk of frailty in older individuals. SUMMARY Recent literature highlights numerous health benefits for older people associated with a substantial intake of plant-based vs. animal-based protein, both in preventing and mitigating chronic age-related diseases and reducing the risk of all-cause mortality. However, a high intake of plant-based protein-rich products could pose risks of malnutrition and fiber-related intestinal intolerances. Further research is needed to assess the risk-benefit ratio of a high consumption of plant proteins in older individuals before we can make robust recommendations on how far animal proteins can be healthfully replaced with plant proteins.

Abstract
Pulses, as an important part of the human diet, can act as a source of high-quality plant proteins. Pulse proteins and their hydrolysates have shown promising results in alleviating metabolic syndrome and modulating the gut microbiome. Their bioactivities have become a focus of research, with many new findings added in recent studies. This paper comprehensively reviews the anti-hypertension, anti-hyperglycemia, anti-dyslipidemia and anti-obesity bioactivities of pulse proteins and their hydrolysates in recent in vitro and in vivo studies, which show great potential for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome. In addition, pulse proteins and their hydrolysates can regulate the gut microbiome, which in turn can have a positive impact on the treatment of metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, the beneficial effects of some pulse proteins and their hydrolysates on metabolic syndrome have been supported by clinical studies. This review might provide a reference for the application of pulse proteins and their hydrolysates in functional foods or nutritional supplements for people with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study aimed to explore the relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) genetic variants and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its complications, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD), insulin resistance (IR), and metabolic syndrome (MS). METHOD 4329 individuals with suspected OSA who underwent a comprehensive assessment of anthropometric, biochemical, and polysomnography (PSG) data, along with 30 LDL-C single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were enrolled. The 10-year Framingham CVD risk score (FRS), IR and MS were evaluated for each subject. Linear regression and logistic regression were utilized to examine the correlations among these variables. RESULTS After the Benjamini-Hochberg correction, linear regression results indicated positive correlations between variants rs3741297 and rs629301 with FRS (β = 0.031, PBH=0.002; β = 0.026, PBH=0.015). Logistic regression revealed that rs3741297 increased MS risk among total subjects [OR = 1.67 (95% CI:1.369-2.038), PBH=1.32 × 10- 5] and increased IR risk in females [OR = 3.475 (95% CI:1.653-7.307), PBH=0.03]. In males, rs2642438 decreased MS risk [OR = 0.81 (95% CI:0.703-0.933), PBH=0.045]. CONCLUSIONS The rs3741297 variant correlated with susceptibility to CVD, IR, and MS in the OSA population. OSA, CVD, IR and MS share a potentially common genetic background, which may promote precision medicine. CINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION The study protocol was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR1900025714).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reportedly, the stress-hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) is closely associated with poor prognosis in patients with severe acute disease. However, the community-dwelling may also be in a state of stress due to environmental exposure. Our study aimed to explore the association between SHR and all-cause mortality in the community-dwelling population. METHODS A total of 18 480 participants were included out of 82 091 from the NHANES 1999-2014 survey. The Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were used to assess the disparities in survival rates based on SHR, and the log-rank test was employed to investigate the distinctions between groups. The multivariate Cox regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were performed to assess the association of SHR with all-cause mortality. A subgroup analysis was also conducted. RESULTS A total of 3188 deaths occurred during a median follow-up period of 11.0 (7.7; 15.4) years. The highest risk for all-cause mortality was observed when SHR≤ 0.843 or SHR ≥0.986 (log-rank p < .001). After adjusting for the confounding factors, compared with subjects in the second SHR quartile (Q2), participants in the highest (Q4, adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.28-1.73) and lowest quartiles (Q1, adjusted HR 1.37, 95% CI 1.16-1.60) have a higher probability of all-cause death. The RCS observed a dose-response U-shaped association between SHR and all-cause mortality. The U-shaped association between SHR and all-cause mortality was similar across subgroup analysis. CONCLUSIONS The SHR was significantly associated with all-cause mortality in the community-dwelling population, and the relationship was U-shaped.

Abstract
The influence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on long-term prognosis of patients with myocardial infarction (MI), the most severe type of coronary artery disease, remains not fully determined. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate the association between MetS and long-term clinical outcomes of patients with MI. A systematic search of Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases from inception to June 25, 2023, was conducted to obtain eligible studies. Only studies with follow-up duration for at least one year were considered. A random-effects model was utilized to pool the results, accounting for heterogeneity. Ten observational studies were included, which included 33 197 patients with MI. Among them, 17 244 (51.9%) were with MetS at baseline. During a follow-up duration of 12 to 48 months (mean: 22.5 months), patients with MetS were associated with higher incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events [risk ratio (RR): 1.35. 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.19 to 1.54, p<0.001; I2=64%] and all-cause deaths (RR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.18 to 1.52, p<0.001; I2=23%), as compared to those without MetS at baseline. Subgroup analyses showed that the results were not significantly affected by study characteristics such as study country, design, type of MI, mean age of the patients, treatment with percutaneous coronary intervention, follow-up durations, or study quality scores (p for subgroup difference all>0.05). In patients with MI, MetS may be a risk factor of poor long-term prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lifestyle interventions are recommended as the first-line treatment to control metabolic syndrome components and improve cardiometabolic risk factors. However, studies directly comparing the cardiometabolic effects of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) vs. the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) accompanied by salt restriction are currently lacking. Thus, with the present secondary analyses of a randomized trial, we aimed to assess the cardiometabolic effects of a 3-month intensive dietary intervention implementing salt restriction alone or on top of the DASH and MedDiet compared to no/minimal intervention in never drug-treated adults with high normal blood pressure (BP) or grade 1 hypertension. METHODS We randomly assigned individuals to the control group (CG, n = 60), salt restriction group (SRG, n = 60), DASH diet with salt restriction group (DDG, n = 60), or MedDiet with salt restriction group (MDG, n = 60). RESULTS According to the intention-to-treat analysis, the DDG and the MDG had lower odds ratio (OR) (95% CI) of metabolic syndrome [0.29 (0.12, 0.72), and 0.15 (0.06, 0.41), respectively] compared to the CG. Moreover, the MDG had lower odds of metabolic syndrome compared to the SRG and lower odds of elevated BP levels than the DDG and the SRG. Moreover, total and LDL-cholesterol, fasting glucose, HbA1c, and systolic/diastolic BP were reduced in all three intervention groups compared to the CG. CONCLUSION On a background of salt restriction, the MedDiet was superior in BP reduction, but the DASH and MedDiet reduced the prevalence of metabolic syndrome to the same extent.

Abstract
Here, by using in vitro and ex vivo approaches, we elucidate the impairment of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pathway in vascular complications associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). In the in vitro model simulating hyperlipidemic/hyperglycemic conditions, we observe significant hallmarks of endothelial dysfunction, including eNOS/NO signaling impairment, ROS overproduction, and a reduction in CSE-derived H2S. Transitioning to an ex vivo model using db/db mice, a genetic MetS model, we identify a downregulation of CBS and CSE expression in aorta, coupled with a diminished L-cysteine-induced vasorelaxation. Molecular mechanisms of eNOS/NO signaling impairment, dissected using pharmacological and molecular approaches, indicate an altered eNOS/Cav-1 ratio, along with reduced Ach- and Iso-induced vasorelaxation and increased L-NIO-induced contraction. In vivo treatment with the H2S donor Erucin ameliorates vascular dysfunction observed in db/db mice without impacting eNOS, further highlighting a specific action on smooth muscle component rather than the endothelium. Analyzing the NO signaling pathway in db/db mice aortas, reduced cGMP levels were detected, implicating a defective sGC/cGMP signaling. In vivo Erucin administration restores cGMP content. This beneficial effect involves an increased sGC activity, due to enzyme persulfidation observed in sGC overexpressed cells, coupled with PDE5 inhibition. In conclusion, our study demonstrates a pivotal role of reduced cGMP levels in impaired vasorelaxation in a murine model of MetS involving an impairment of both H2S and NO signaling. Exogenous H2S supplementation through Erucin represents a promising alternative in MetS therapy, targeting smooth muscle cells and supporting the importance of lifestyle and nutrition in managing MetS.

Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between dietary habits and metabolic health among women, emphasizing the role of anthropometric parameters as proxies for insulin resistance. We analyzed data from 443 women categorized into two groups based on the presence or absence of clinically diagnosed insulin resistance. Our assessments included dietary quality, socio-demographic characteristics, and a series of anthropometric measurements such as body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR), Abdominal Volume Index (AVI), and Body Adiposity Index (BAI). The results indicated significant disparities in these parameters, with the insulin-resistant group exhibiting higher average body weight (78.92 kg vs. 65.04 kg, p < 0.001), BMI (28.45 kg/m2 vs. 23.17 kg/m2, p < 0.001), and other related measures, suggesting a strong influence of dietary patterns on body composition and metabolic risk. The study underscores the importance of dietary management in addressing insulin resistance, advocating for personalized dietary strategies to improve metabolic health outcomes in women. This approach highlights the need for integrating dietary changes with lifestyle modifications and socio-demographic considerations to combat metabolic risks effectively.

Abstract
Obesity and metabolic syndrome affect the majority of the US population. Patients with obesity are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), each of which carry the risk of further complications if left untreated and lead to adverse outcomes. The rising prevalence of obesity and its comorbidities has led to increased mortality, decreased quality of life, and rising healthcare expenditures. This phenomenon has resulted in the intensive investigation of exciting therapies for obesity over the past decade, including more treatments that are still in the pipeline. In our present report, we aim to solidify the relationships among obesity, T2DM, OSA, and MASLD through a comprehensive review of current research. We also provide an overview of the surgical and pharmacologic treatment classes that target these relationships, namely bariatric surgery, the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and glucagon receptor agonists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a health issue consisting of multiple metabolic abnormalities. The impact of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on MetS and its components remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess the associations of individual urinary metabolites of VOC (mVOCs) and mVOC mixtures with MetS and its components among the general adult population in the United States. METHODS A total of 5345 participants with eligible data were filtered from the 2011-2020 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to assess the associations of individual mVOCs with MetS and its components. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression models were constructed to identify more relevant mVOCs. The weight quantile sum regression model was applied to further explore the links between mVOC co-exposure and MetS and its components. RESULTS The results indicated positive associations between multiple mVOCs and MetS, including CEMA, DHBMA, and HMPMA. CEMA was found to be positively correlated with all components of MetS. HMPMA was associated with elevated triglyceride (TG), reduced high-density lipoprotein, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) impairment; 3HPMA was associated with an elevated risk of high TG and FBG impairment; and DHBMA had positive associations with elevated TG and high blood pressure. The co-exposure of LASSO-selected mVOCs was associated with an increased risk of elevated TG, high blood pressure, and FBG impairment. CONCLUSION Positive associations of certain individual urinary mVOCs and mVOC mixtures with MetS and its components were observed by utilizing multiple statistical models and large-scale national data. These findings may serve as the theoretical basis for future experimental and mechanistic studies and have important implications for public health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) has been established as a significant factor in the pathogenesis of numerous chronic inflammatory conditions. However, its role in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP) is unknown. This study aims to investigate the association between MetS, its components, and the risk of postoperative recurrence in Chinese patients with CRSwNP. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted on CRSwNP patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery in our hospital. Patients were divided into MetS and non-MetS groups, and the clinical characteristics and recurrence rates were compared. All CRSwNP patients were followed up for more than 2-years and further categorized into non-recurrent and recurrent groups. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the effects of MetS and its components on the risk of postoperative recurrence. RESULTS A total of 555 CRSwNP patients were enrolled in the present study, 157 patients were included in the MetS group and 398 patients were categorized into the non-MetS group. The recurrence rate in the MetS group was significantly higher compared to the non-MetS group (p < 0.05). The rate of MetS, overweight or obesity, hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia were higher in the recurrent group in comparison with the non-recurrent group (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that MetS, overweight or obesity, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and accompanying allergic rhinitis were associated with the risk of postoperative recurrence of CRSwNP (p < 0.05). Moreover, adjusted and unadjusted regression models showed that MetS was an independent risk factor for postoperative recurrence of CRSwNP, and the risk increased with more components of MetS included (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings revealed that MetS independently increased the risk of postoperative recurrence in patients with CRSwNP, with the risk escalating as the number of MetS components increased. Moreover, accompanying allergic rhinitis was also demonstrated to be a potential risk factor for CRSwNP recurrence. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level 4.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the leading public health issues in the world with a reported prevalence of nearly 25% in the past decades in Iran. The present research aimed to identify the association between the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and MetS components among female teachers. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 97 female teachers aged 31-57 years were enrolled from 2018 to 2019 in Qom, Iran. Usual dietary intakes were assessed using a validated 168-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). HEI-2015 was calculated according to the consumption of whole fruits, vegetables, protein foods, beans, seafood, plant proteins, total and refined grain, dairy, fatty acid ratio, saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium. We also measured anthropometric and biochemical parameters. To evaluate the association between HEI-2015 and MetS, multivariate logistic regression was performed. RESULTS MetS was found in 59.8% of participants. Total HEI-2015 scores were significantly lower in participants with MetS compared to those without MetS (59.69 ± 8.98 vs. 64.21 ± 8.71, respectively; p = 0.02). Daily energy intake, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum triglyceride, and fasting blood sugar levels were higher in women with MetS (all p < 0.05). Higher HEI-2015 total scores (OR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.89-0.99; p = 0.02) and scores of total vegetables (OR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.42-0.91; p = 0.02), dark green vegetables and beans (OR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.39-0.98; p = 0.04), fatty acid ratio (OR: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.68-0.99; p = 0.04), refined grain (OR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.75-0.99; p = 0.04), and added sugars (OR: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.26-0.75; p = 0.002) were all associated with lower odds of having MetS. CONCLUSIONS Higher HEI-2015 scores, particularly in total vegetables, dark green vegetables, beans, and fatty acid ratio, as well as refined grain and added sugars were found to be associated with reduced odds of having MetS among Iranian female teachers. However, further prospective studies are required to confirm this finding.

Abstract
Interleukins (ILs) are a group of cytokines known to have immunomodulatory effects; they include ILs-33 and -37 whose emerging roles in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) remain under investigated. In this study, we compared circulating IL-33 and IL-37 in Arab adults with and without MetS to determine its associations with MetS components. A total of 417 Saudi participants (151 males, 266 females; mean age ± SD 41.3 ± 9.0 years; mean body mass index ± SD 30.7 ± 6.3 kg/m2) were enrolled and screened for MetS using the ATP III criteria. Anthropometrics and fasting blood samples were taken for the assessment of fasting glucose and lipids. Circulating levels of IL-33 and IL-37 were measured using commercially available assays. The results showed higher levels of serum IL-33 and IL-37 in participants with MetS than those without (IL-33, 3.34 3.42 (2.3-3.9) vs. (1-3.9), p = 0.057; IL-37, 5.1 (2.2-8.3) vs. 2.9 (2.1-6.1), p = 0.01). Additionally, having elevated levels of IL-33 was a risk factor for hypertension, low HDL-c, and hypertriglyceridemia. A stratification of the participants according to sex showed that males had higher IL-33 levels than females [3.7 (3.0-4.1) vs. 3.15 (1.4-3.8), p < 0.001], while females had higher levels of IL-37 than males [3.01 (2.2-7.0) vs. 2.9 (2.1-5.6), p = 0.06]. In conclusion, the presence of MetS substantially alters the expression of ILs-33 and -37. IL-33 in particular can be potentially used as a therapeutic target to prevent MetS progression. Longitudinal and interventional studies are warranted to confirm present findings.

Abstract
Complex multi-omics effects drive the clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors, underscoring the imperative to comprehend how individual and combined omics shape phenotypic variation. Our study partitions phenotypic variance in metabolic syndrome (MetS), blood glucose (GLU), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and blood pressure through genome, transcriptome, metabolome, and exposome (i.e., lifestyle exposome) analyses. Our analysis included a cohort of 62,822 unrelated individuals with white British ancestry, sourced from the UK biobank. We employed linear mixed models to partition phenotypic variance using the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method, implemented in MTG2 (v2.22). We initiated the analysis by individually modeling omics, followed by subsequent integration of pairwise omics in a joint model that also accounted for the covariance and interaction between omics layers. Finally, we estimated the correlations of various omics effects between the phenotypes using bivariate REML. Significant proportions of the MetS variance were attributed to distinct data sources: genome (9.47%), transcriptome (4.24%), metabolome (14.34%), and exposome (3.77%). The phenotypic variances explained by the genome, transcriptome, metabolome, and exposome ranged from 3.28% for GLU to 25.35% for HDL-C, 0% for GLU to 19.34% for HDL-C, 4.29% for systolic blood pressure (SBP) to 35.75% for TG, and 0.89% for GLU to 10.17% for HDL-C, respectively. Significant correlations were found between genomic and transcriptomic effects for TG and HDL-C. Furthermore, significant interaction effects between omics data were detected for both MetS and its components. Interestingly, significant correlation of omics effect between the phenotypes was found. This study underscores omics' roles, interaction effects, and random-effects covariance in unveiling phenotypic variation in multi-omics domains.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) complications involves the excessive production of reactive oxygen species, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Due to Lycopene, a highly unstable structure and its significant effects on modulating the metabolic system, there is a strong need for a formula that can increase its stability. The aim of this study was to develop an approach for encapsulating Lycopene and investigate its effects on inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, and liver enzymes in patients with MetS. Materials and Methods: This study is a simple randomized, double-blind, objective-based clinical trial that involved eighty subjects with MetS, who were equally and randomly assigned to two groups: one group received 20 mg of Lycopene per day for 8 weeks, and the Placebo group followed the same protocol as the Lycopene group but received a placebo instead of Lycopene. They were called Lycopene and placebo, respectively. During follow-up visits after 4 and 8 weeks, 20 ml of blood was collected for evaluation of liver enzymes and some inflammatory related markers. Results: Prior to the assignment of volunteers to their respective groups, there were no notable differences in C-reactive protein (CRP), serum liver enzymes, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, or pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) between the Lycopene and placebo groups. However, our subsequent analysis revealed a significant reduction in the serum levels of CRP (P=0.001) and PAB (P=0.004) in the group that received Lycopene. Our encapsulated Lycopene treatment was not associated with a significant difference in serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transferase (AST), or alkaline phosphatase (ALP) between our two groups. Conclusion: This study investigated the impact of Lycopene on individuals with MetS, revealing a noteworthy modulation effect on PAB and inflammation linked to MetS. However, no significant differences was demonstrated in serum levels of ALT, AST and ALP between the studied group (registration number: IRCT20130507013263N3).

Abstract
Ginsenoside Rc, a dammarane-type tetracyclic triterpenoid saponin primarily derived from Panax ginseng, has garnered significant attention due to its diverse pharmacological properties. This review outlined the sources, putative biosynthetic pathways, extraction, and quantification techniques, as well as the pharmacokinetic properties of ginsenoside Rc. Furthermore, this study explored the pharmacological effects of ginsenoside Rc against metabolic syndrome (MetS) across various phenotypes including obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and osteoarthritis. It also highlighted the impact of ginsenoside Rc on multiple associated signaling molecules. In conclusion, the anti-MetS effect of ginsenoside Rc is characterized by its influence on multiple organs, multiple targets, and multiple ways. Although clinical investigations regarding the effects of ginsenoside Rc on MetS are limited, its proven safety and tolerability suggest its potential as an effective treatment option.

Abstract
Previous studies showed conflicting results regarding the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and risk of lung cancer. We performed a systemic review and meta-analysis to determine the relationship between MetS and lung cancer incidence and mortality in adults. Longitudinal follow-up studies were identified by search of Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. By incorporating potential heterogeneity into the model, a randomized-effects model was selected to pool the results. Fourteen observational studies were included. Pooled results showed that MetS was associated with a higher risk of lung cancer incidence [risk ratio (RR): 1.15, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05 to 1.26, p=0.002; I2=89%). Subgroup analysis suggested that the association was not significantly affected by study country, design, sex of the participants, adjustment of smoking, or different study quality scores (p for subgroup difference all>0.05). The association was predominantly contributed by studies with MetS defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel-III rather than those with MetS defined by the International Diabetes Foundation criteria, and the association seemed to be stronger in studies with follow-up within 6 years than those over 6 years (p for subgroup difference=0.03 and 0.04, respectively). In addition, pooled results also showed that MetS was associated with a higher risk of lung cancer mortality (RR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.79, p <0.001; I2=0%). In conclusion, in adult population, MetS may be a risk factor of lung cancer incidence and mortality.

Abstract
Most studies on ketosis have focused on short-term effects, male athletes, or weight loss. Hereby, we studied the effects of short-term ketosis suppression in healthy women on long-standing ketosis. Ten lean (BMI 20.5 ± 1.4), metabolically healthy, pre-menopausal women (age 32.3 ± 8.9) maintaining nutritional ketosis (NK) for > 1 year (3.9 years ± 2.3) underwent three 21-day phases: nutritional ketosis (NK; P1), suppressed ketosis (SuK; P2), and returned to NK (P3). Adherence to each phase was confirmed with daily capillary D-beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) tests (P1 = 1.9 ± 0.7; P2 = 0.1 ± 0.1; and P3 = 1.9 ± 0.6 pmol/L). Ageing biomarkers and anthropometrics were evaluated at the end of each phase. Ketosis suppression significantly increased: insulin, 1.78-fold from 33.60 (± 8.63) to 59.80 (± 14.69) pmol/L (p = 0.0002); IGF1, 1.83-fold from 149.30 (± 32.96) to 273.40 (± 85.66) µg/L (p = 0.0045); glucose, 1.17-fold from 78.6 (± 9.5) to 92.2 (± 10.6) mg/dL (p = 0.0088); respiratory quotient (RQ), 1.09-fold 0.66 (± 0.05) to 0.72 (± 0.06; p = 0.0427); and PAI-1, 13.34 (± 6.85) to 16.69 (± 6.26) ng/mL (p = 0.0428). VEGF, EGF, and monocyte chemotactic protein also significantly increased, indicating a pro-inflammatory shift. Sustained ketosis showed no adverse health effects, and may mitigate hyperinsulinemia without impairing metabolic flexibility in metabolically healthy women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between carotid plaque load score (CPS) and metabolic syndrome (MS) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), in order to provide theoretical basis for the precaution and control of MS and CVD. METHODS A total of 1962 patients were incorporated into the study and divided into MS group and non-MS group, CVD group and non-CVD group. CPS and CIMT were obtained by carotid artery ultrasound, and the data of each group were statistically analyzed. RESULTS Age, BMI, basal metabolic rate, body fat rate, gender, and the incidence of central obesity, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia are statistical different between MS group and non-MS group (P < 0.05). CIMT between CVD group and non-CVD group are statistical different (1.040 ± 0.239 VS 0.972 ± 0.297, P < 0.001). CPS was statistically significant between MS group and non-MS group(2.254 ± 2.728 VS 1.548 ± 2.219, P = 0.003) and between CVD group and non-CVD group (2.322 ± 2.760 VS 1.688 ± 2.347, P = 0.004). CONCLUSION Patients in MS group and CVD group have higher carotid plaque burden than those in non-MS group and non-CVD group. The higher the CPS was, the higher the incidence of MS and CVD was, and the distribution of CPS in MS and CVD population was consistent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher dietary quality, including increased vegetable consumption, was associated with a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, specific vegetable consumption in the development of MetS remains obscure. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between starchy and non-starchy vegetables and MetS. METHODS Secondary data analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2018). MetS was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult treatment Panel III (NCEP ATPIII) and dietary consumption was assessed by trained staff using two 24-h diet recall methods. Weighted logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were performed to further investigate specific vegetable subtypes and MetS. RESULTS This research enrolled 24,646 individuals (11,725 females and 12,921 males), with an average age of 45.84 ± 0.23 years. Approximately 15,828(64.22%) participants were defined to be with non-MetS and 8818(35.78%) were with MetS. Both total starchy vegetables and potatoes were associated with increased MetS risk, with the corresponding OR per standard deviation (SD) (95%CI, p-trend) being 1.06(1.02-1.11, p-trend = 0.028) and 1.08(1.04-1.13, p-trend = 0.011), respectively. However, an inverse correlation was found between dark-green vegetables and MetS, and the OR per SD (95%CI, p-trend) was 0.93(0.90-0.97, p-trend = 0.010). Subgroup analyses showed that the positive associations of starchy vegetables and potatoes on MetS risk were stronger in non-Hispanic White participants (p for interaction < 0.050). CONCLUSION Total starchy vegetables and white potatoes were both associated with an increased risk of MetS, while consumption of dark-green vegetables was negatively associated with MetS risk. These findings might provide a promising and healthy dietary strategy for preventing MetS.

Abstract
Bile acids are acknowledged as signaling molecules involved in metabolic syndrome. The Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) functions as a significant bile acid receptor. The accumulated evidence suggests that TGR5 involves lipid homeostasis, glucose metabolism, and inflammation regulation. In line with this, recent preclinical studies also demonstrate that TGR5 plays a significant role in the generation and progression of metabolic syndrome, encompassing type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, atherosclerosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this review, we discuss the role of TGR5 in metabolic syndrome, illustrating the underlying mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Christian Orthodox Church (COC) fasting is a periodic vegetarian-type diet lasting 180-200 days annually in which seafood and snails are allowed on all fasting days. Our aim was to investigate the effects of COC fasting on metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults >50 years. METHODS One hundred seventy-six individuals participated in the study (mean age 59.7 ± 6.0 years). Eighty-nine had been following the COC fasting regime since their childhood and eighty-seven were non-fasters. Anthropometric measurements, blood samples, and nutrient intake data were collected at a scheduled appointment, during a non-fasting period. RESULTS Fasters had significantly higher hip circumference (102 ± 8.5 vs. 98.8 ± 7.5 cm, p = 0.009), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (136 ± 73 vs. 115 ± 51 mg/dL, p = 0.033), and folic acid levels (6.0 ± 4.0 vs. 3.0 ± 1.2 ng/mL, p = 0.018), as well as lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) (131 ± 13 vs. 136 ± 14 mmHg, p = 0.045), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (80 ± 8 vs. 83 ± 7 mmHg, p = 0.007), glucose (87 ± 16 vs. 93 ± 25 mg/dL, p = 0.039), and triglycerides (143 ± 94 vs. 175 ± 84 mg/dL, p = 0.040). Fasters had significantly less intake of calories (1493.65 ± 363.74 vs. 1614.65 ± 426.28 kcal, p = 0.044) and fat (81.17 ± 25.47 vs. 90.74 ± 24.75 g, p = 0.012), whereas they also consumed significantly less vitamin A-retinol, vitamin B2, vitamin B12, vitamin E, folic acid, pantothenic acid, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and significantly more vitamin C (p < 0.005 for all comparisons). BP was significantly higher in non-fasters (44.8 vs. 22.5%, p = 0.002), whereas MetS was more frequently present in non-fasters vs. fasters, with a marginal level of significance (35.6 vs. 22.5%, p = 0.055). CONCLUSIONS COC fasting may affect beneficially MetS prevalence in individuals >50 years, although future research is needed before reaching definite conclusions.

Abstract
Endocrine homeostasis and metabolic diseases have been the subject of extensive research in recent years. The development of new techniques and insights has led to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying these conditions and opened up new avenues for diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we discussed the rise of metabolic diseases, especially in Western countries, the genetical, psychological, and behavioral basis of metabolic diseases, the role of nutrition and physical activity in the development of metabolic diseases, the role of single-cell transcriptomics, gut microbiota, epigenetics, advanced imaging techniques, and cell-based therapies in metabolic diseases. Finally, practical applications derived from this information are made.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by increased pro-oxidative stress and a chronic inflammation state and their consequent alterations. Several studies have highlighted the protective effect of carotenoids and polyphenols in MetS patients. This study aimed to evaluate the plasma level of selected carotenoids and polyphenols and to determine their relationship with MetS severity, MetS components, and inflammatory markers in Polish adults with metabolic disorders. It was designed as a cross-sectional study. The final study group comprised 275 adults, including 158 women and 117 men. Data were collected on the frequency of consumption of selected food groups. Anthropometric measurements and blood samples were taken to determine the concentration of carotenoids, polyphenols, and indicators (parameters) of metabolic disorders. Plasma concentrations of selected carotenoids and polyphenols were low in adults with MetS. The highest concentrations of carotenoids and polyphenols in the blood were observed for lutein and phenolic acids (including gallic and p-coumaric acids). Nevertheless, a correlation was found between the individual bioactive compounds and MetS components. In terms of the lipid profile, our study showed that the plasma of the selected carotenoids and polyphenols positively correlated with HDL cholesterol (zeaxanthin; total carotenoids), LDL cholesterol (chlorogenic acid), triglycerides (lycopene), and the total cholesterol (kaempferol). We found that the level of CRP as a marker of inflammation negatively correlated with the concentration of zeaxanthin. In our study group, no relationship was found between the dietary antioxidant intensity and the variables studied, which may be attributed to the low frequency of consumption of the sources of bioactive compounds, such as carotenoids and polyphenols, but also to the metabolic disorders. Further research is needed to determine whether these associations are causally related to the metabolic syndrome or are a result of the pathologies of the syndrome or improper diet with a low intake of vegetables and fruit.

Abstract
Polyphenols are compounds found in various plants and foods, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recently, researchers have been exploring the therapeutic potential of marine polyphenols and other minor nutrients that are found in algae, fish and crustaceans. These compounds have unique chemical structures and exhibit diverse biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antitumor action. Due to these properties, marine polyphenols are being investigated as possible therapeutic agents for the treatment of a wide variety of conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. This review focuses on the therapeutic potential of marine polyphenols and their applications in human health, and also, in marine phenolic classes, the extraction methods, purification techniques and future applications of marine phenolic compounds.

Abstract
Religious fasting that involves abstinence from specific food(s) is part of many religions worldwide and has been gaining attention by the research community during the last years. The study aimed to investigate whether the periodic Christian Orthodox fasting mitigates the changes in body composition, dietary intake, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in postmenopausal women. One hundred and thirty-four postmenopausal women aged 57.3 ± 6.7 years participated in this study. The Christian Orthodox fasting was followed by 68 postmenopausal women since their childhood, whereas 66 postmenopausal women were non-fasters. Data collection involved anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary information. Postmenopausal women who fasted according to Christian Orthodox Church recommendations had significantly higher mean fat free mass (45 vs. 44 kg, p = 0.002), hip circumference (104 vs. 99 cm, p = 0.001), and diastolic blood pressure (79 vs. 82 mmHg, p = 0.024). No other differences were found with regards to anthropometric data. Fasters also consumed significantly less fat (78 vs. 91 g, p = 0.006), as well as saturated (19 vs. 23 g, p = 0.015), monounsaturated (41 vs. 47 g, p = 0.018), and polyunsaturated fat (8.5 vs. 10 g, p = 0.023), trans fatty acids (0.5 vs. 2.3 g, p = 0.035), and cholesterol (132 vs. 176 g, p = 0.011). In terms of MetS features, non-fasters had more frequently elevated fasting blood glucose (11.8 vs. 24.2%, p = 0.039) and elevated blood pressure (13.2 vs. 36.4%, p = 0.041) compared with fasters. MetS was more common in non-fasters versus fasters with a marginal level of significance (30.3 vs. 23.5%, p = 0.052). Postmenopausal women who follow the Christian Orthodox fasting regime had lower fat intake, and no other difference in nutrient intake, compared with non-fasters. The latter were more likely to have MetS and some of its components. Overall, periodic abstinence from meat, dairy products, and eggs might play a protective role in postmenopausal women with regard to MetS.

Abstract
Diet-therapy of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is of great importance due to significant health and social consequences. The aim of this study was (1) to determine dietary patterns (DPs), and (2) to search for associations between defined DPs, anthropometric and cardiometabolic indices, and the number of MetS components in Polish adults with metabolic disorders. The study was designed as a cross-sectional. The study group was 276 adults. Data about the frequency of consumption of selected food groups were collected. Anthropometric measurements: body height (H), body weight (BW), waist (WC), and hip (HC), as well as body composition, were taken. Blood samples were obtained for measurements of glucose and lipids. The obtained biochemical and anthropometric parameters were used to calculate the anthropometric and metabolic dysfunction indices. Three dietary patterns were identified in our study group: Western, Prudent and Low Food. Results of logistic regression analysis indicated rare consumption of fish as a predictor of risk of more severe forms of MetS. The possibility of using body roundness index (BRI) for fast diagnosis of cardiometabolic risk was found. In the management of MetS, the development of strategies to reduce the risk of more severe forms of MetS should be focused on increasing fish consumption and other prohealthy food.

Abstract
Based on the known role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis and progression of metabolic syndrome, we used two-dimensional gel electrophoresis with immunochemical detection of protein carbonyls (2D-Oxyblot) to characterize the carbonylated proteins induced by oxidative stress in spontaneously hypertensive rats/NDmcr-cp (CP), an animal model of metabolic syndrome. We also profiled the proteins that showed change of expression levels in their epididymal adipose tissue at the pre-symptomatic (6-week-old) and the symptomatic (25-week-old) stages of the metabolic syndrome. Two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS) was used to analyze proteins extracted from the epididymal adipose tissue. The up-regulated proteins identified at the pre-symptomatic stage were mainly associated with ATP production and redox reaction, while the down-regulated proteins found at the symptomatic stage were involved in antioxidant activity and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Further analysis using the 2D-Oxyblot showed significantly high carbonylation levels of gelsolin and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase [NAD+] at the symptomatic stage. These results suggest that reduced antioxidant capacity underlies the increased oxidative stress state in the metabolic syndrome. The identified carbonylated proteins, including gelsolin, are potential targets that may act as key regulators in the progression of the metabolic syndrome.
