Citrate-based biodegradable polymers have emerged as a distinctive biomaterial platform with tremendous potential for diverse medical applications. By harnessing their versatile chemistry, these polymers exhibit a wide range of material and bioactive properties, enabling them to regulate cell metabolism and stem cell differentiation through energy metabolism, metabonegenesis, angiogenesis, and immunomodulation. Moreover, the recent US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance of the biodegradable poly(octamethylene citrate) (POC)/hydroxyapatite-based orthopedic fixation devices represents a translational research milestone for biomaterial science. POC joins a short list of biodegradable synthetic polymers that have ever been authorized by the FDA for use in humans. The clinical success of POC has sparked enthusiasm and accelerated the development of next-generation citrate-based biomaterials. This review presents a comprehensive, forward-thinking discussion on the pivotal role of citrate chemistry and metabolism in various tissue regeneration and on the development of functional citrate-based metabotissugenic biomaterials for regenerative engineering applications.

Recent Advances in Biomaterials for mRNA Delivery to Immune Cells

Modulating the function of immune cells by targeting the cells themselves has become a key strategy in immunotherapy for combating various diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and infectious ailments. The use of mRNA (mRNA) is a powerful tool for transiently inducing protein expression, which is often used for genetic manipulation. However, its inherent instability and inability to precisely reach target cells necessitate the use of biomaterials for safe and effective delivery. Additionally, transfecting immune cells is difficult and complex due to their resistance mechanisms, signaling pathways, and cellular interactions. This review focuses on the recent development of biomaterials for mRNA delivery to immune cells, including lipid nanoparticles and polymeric carriers. It also outlines the challenges of targeting and delivering therapeutic payloads to immune cells, providing commentary and outlook on the design of next-generation materials. Finally, this approach has the potential to significantly enhance the precision and effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for various diseases, shaping the future of mRNA delivery for immune conditions.

Metal alloys like stainless steel, titanium, and cobalt-chromium alloys are preferable for bio-implants due to their exceptional strength, tribological properties, and biocompatibility. However, long-term implantation of metal alloys can lead to inflammation, swelling, and itching because of ion leaching. To address this issue, polymers are increasingly being utilized in orthopedic applications, replacing metallic components such as bone fixation plates, screws, and scaffolds, as well as minimizing metal-on-metal contact in total hip and knee joint replacements. Ceramics, known for their hardness, thermal barrier, wear, and corrosion resistance, find extensive application in electrochemical, fuel, and biomedical industries. This review delves into a variety of biocompatible materials engineered to seamlessly integrate with the body, reducing adverse reactions like inflammation, toxicity, or immune responses. Additionally, this review examines the potential of various biomaterials including metals, polymers, and ceramics for implant applications. While metallic biomaterials remain indispensable, polymers and ceramics show promise as alternative options. However, surface-modified metallic materials offer a hybrid effect, combining the strengths of different constituents. The future of biomedical implant materials lies in advanced fabrication techniques and personalized designs, facilitating tailored solutions for complex medical needs.

Recent Advancements in the Synthesis of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene via Late Transition Metal Catalysts

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylenes (UHMWPEs) are significant engineering plastics for their unique properties, such as high impact resistance, abrasion resistance, weatherability, lubricity, and chemical resistance. Consequently, developing a suitable catalyst is vital in facilitating the preparation of UHMWPE. The late transition metal catalysts have emerged as effective catalysts in producing UHMWPE due to their availability, enhanced tolerance to heteroatom groups, active polymerization characteristics, and good copolymerization ability with polar monomers. In this review, we mainly focus on the late transition metal catalysts, summarizing advancements in their application over the past decade. Four key metals (Ni, Pd, Fe, Co) for generating linear or branched UHMWPE will be primarily explored in this manuscript.

Ethylene Polymerization over Metal-Organic Framework-Supported Zirconocene Complexes

Metallocene immobilization onto a solid support helps to overcome the drawbacks of homogeneous metallocene complexes in the catalytic olefin polymerization. In this study, valuable insights have been obtained into the effects of pore size, linker composition, and surface groups of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on their role as support materials for metallocene-based ethylene polymerization catalysis. Three distinct Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, MOF-5, IRMOF-3, and ZIF-8, with different linkers have been activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO) and zirconocene complexes, followed by materials characterization and testing for ethylene polymerization. Characterization has been performed by multiple analytical tools, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and CO Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. It was found that the interactions between MOFs, MAO, and the zirconocene complex not only lead to both catalyst activation and deactivation but also result in the creation of multiple active sites. By alteration of the MOF support, it is possible to obtain polyethylene with different properties. Notably, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, M W = 5.34 × 106) was obtained using IRMOF-3 as support. This study reveals the potential of MOF materials as tunable porous supports for metallocene catalysts active in ethylene polymerization.

Sensitivity, robustness, and reproducibility of U-shaped delamination test for evaluation of candidate ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene materials for joint replacements

The delamination of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in artificial joints is a major cause limiting the long-term clinical results of arthroplasty. However, the conventional test method using simple reciprocation to evaluate the delamination resistance of UHMWPE materials has insufficient detection sensitivity. To reproduce delamination, the unconformity contact must be maintained throughout the test so that the maximum stress is generated below the surface. Therefore, a test method that applies a U-shaped motion comprising two long-linear and one short linear sliding motion was developed. The sensitivity, robustness, and reproducibility of the U-shaped delamination test were investigated and compared with the traditional test method. The traditional test method could reproduce delamination only in materials that had degraded considerably, whereas the U-shaped delamination test could reproduce delamination in a wide range of materials, demonstrating its superior sensitivity. Additionally, using a higher load helped accelerate the test without affecting the test results. The optimal length of the short linear sliding motion was confirmed to be 1 mm. Finally, the inter-laboratory reproducibility of the U-shaped delamination test was confirmed using the round-robin test. The U-shaped delamination test demonstrates high sensitivity, robustness, and reproducibility and contributes to the selection and development of UHMWPE materials and artificial joints with a lower risk of delamination.

All-Polyethylene Versus Metal-Backed Tibial Components in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

BACKGROUND

In the literature, there is no evidence suggesting the superiority in clinical performance between all-polyethylene (AP) and metal-backed (MB) tibial implants in total knee arthroplasty. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature to collect only high-quality studies investigating the differences in terms of clinical and radiostereometric analysis (RSA) outcomes of AP compared to MB implants.

METHODS

Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting either clinical or RSA outcomes have been included. Data sources were Embase, Medline, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials.

RESULTS

We included eleven RCTs evaluating the outcomes of 1,377 patients. Of the RCTs, 9 of them showed a low risk and 2 showed moderate risk of bias. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes and survival rate between the AP and MB group; however, a statistically significant lower mean lift-off in the AP group (0.19 mm) compared to the MB group (0.3 mm) was observed on RSA.

CONCLUSIONS

The performance of AP total knee arthroplasty in terms of clinical outcomes and 5-year survival was not statistically different when compared to the MB group. However, the RSA showed a statistically significant lower mean lift-off in the AP group.

Enhancing Wear Resistance of UHMWPE Composites with Micro MoS2 and Nano Graphite: A Taguchi-DOE Approach

This study presents an in-depth investigation into the wear characteristics of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites reinforced with microsized MoS2 and nanosized graphite particles. The objective is to enhance the wear resistance of the UHMWPE by examining the effects of various parameters and optimizing the wear performance. To achieve this goal, wet wear tests were conducted under controlled conditions, and the results were compared between composites with micro MoS2 and nano graphite reinforcements. The Taguchi method was employed to design the experiments (DOE) using an L9 orthogonal array. Four key parameters, namely, reinforcement percentage, load, speed, and track radius, were varied systematically to analyze their impact on wear characteristics, including wear rate, frictional forces, and the coefficient of friction (COF). The data obtained from the experiments were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) to identify the significant factors affecting wear behavior. Subsequently, the optimal wear parameters were determined through regression analysis, allowing for the prediction of wear characteristics under the optimum conditions. This research not only provides insights into the comparative performance of micro MoS2 and nano graphite reinforcements in UHMWPE composites but also offers a comprehensive approach to optimizing wear resistance by employing advanced statistical and experimental techniques. The findings contribute to the development of more durable and wear-resistant materials with potential applications in various industries, such as those investigated in the study, which are commonly employed, such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices, or manufacturing.

Understanding the role of head size and neck length in micromotion generation at the taper junction in total hip arthroplasty

Modular hip implants allow intra-operative adjustments for patient-specific customization and targeted replacement of damaged elements without full implant extraction. However, challenges arise from relative micromotions between components, potentially leading to implant failure due to cytotoxic metal debris. In this study magnitude and directions of micromotions at the taper junction were estimated, aiming to understand the effect of variations in head size and neck length. Starting from a reference configuration adhering to the 12/14 taper standard, six additional implant configurations were generated by varying the head size and/or neck length. A musculoskeletal multibody model of a prothesized lower limb was developed to estimate hip contact force and location during a normal walking task. Following the implant assembly, the multibody-derived loads were imposed as boundary conditions in a finite element analysis to compute the taper junction micromotions as the relative slip between the contacting surfaces. Results highlighted the L-size head as the most critical configuration, indicating a 2.81 μm relative slip at the mid-stance phase. The proposed approach enables the investigation of geometric variations in implants under accurate load conditions, providing valuable insights for designing less risky prostheses and informing clinical decision-making processes.

The role of stiffness-matching in avoiding stress shielding-induced bone loss and stress concentration-induced skeletal reconstruction device failure

It is well documented that overly stiff skeletal replacement and fixation devices may fail and require revision surgery. Recent attempts to better support healing and sustain healed bone have looked at stiffness-matching of these devices to the desired role of limiting the stress on fractured or engrafted bone to compressive loads and, after the reconstructed bone has healed, to ensure that reconstructive medical devices (implants) interrupt the normal loading pattern as little as possible. The mechanical performance of these devices can be optimized by adjusting their location, integration/fastening, material(s), geometry (external and internal), and surface properties. This review highlights recent research that focuses on the optimal design of skeletal reconstruction devices to perform during and after healing as the mechanical regime changes. Previous studies have considered auxetic materials, homogeneous or gradient (i.e., adaptive) porosity, surface modification to enhance device/bone integration, and choosing the device's attachment location to ensure good osseointegration and resilient load transduction. By combining some or all of these factors, device designers work hard to avoid problems brought about by unsustainable stress shielding or stress concentrations as a means of creating sustainable stress-strain relationships that best repair and sustain a surgically reconstructed skeletal site. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Although standard-of-care skeletal reconstruction devices will usually allow normal healing and improved comfort for the patient during normal activities, there may be significant disadvantages during long-term use. Stress shielding and stress concentration are amongst the most common causes of failure of a metallic device. This review highlights recent developments in devices for skeletal reconstruction that match the stiffness, while not interrupting the normal loading pattern of a healthy bone, and help to combat stress shielding and stress concentration. This review summarises various approaches to achieve stiffness-matching: application of materials with modulus close to that of the bone; adaptation of geometry with pre-defined mechanical properties; and/or surface modification that ensures good integration and proper load transfer to the bone.

Bone Marrow Stem Cells with Tissue-Engineered Scaffolds for Large Bone Segmental Defects: A Systematic Review

Critical-sized bone defects (CSBDs) represent a significant clinical challenge, stimulating researchers to seek new methods for successful bone reconstruction. The aim of this systematic review is to assess whether bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) combined with tissue-engineered scaffolds have demonstrated improved bone regeneration in the treatment of CSBD in large preclinical animal models. A search of electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) focused on in vivo large animal studies identified 10 articles according to the following inclusion criteria: (1) in vivo large animal models with segmental bone defects; (2) treatment with tissue-engineered scaffolds combined with BMSCs; (3) the presence of a control group; and (4) a minimum of a histological analysis outcome. Animal research: reporting of in Vivo Experiments guidelines were used for quality assessment, and Systematic Review Center for Laboratory animal Experimentation's risk of bias tool was used to define internal validity. The results demonstrated that tissue-engineered scaffolds, either from autografts or allografts, when combined with BMSCs provide improved bone mineralization and bone formation, including a critical role in the remodeling phase of bone healing. BMSC-seeded scaffolds showed improved biomechanical properties and microarchitecture properties of the regenerated bone when compared with untreated and scaffold-alone groups. This review highlights the efficacy of tissue engineering strategies for the repair of extensive bone defects in preclinical large-animal models. In particular, the use of mesenchymal stem cells, combined with bioscaffolds, seems to be a successful method in comparison to cell-free scaffolds.

Engineering Polymer-Based Porous Membrane for Sustainable Lithium-Ion Battery Separators

Due to the growing demand for eco-friendly products, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have gained widespread attention as an energy storage solution. With the global demand for clean and sustainable energy, the social, economic, and environmental significance of LIBs is becoming more widely recognized. LIBs are composed of cathode and anode electrodes, electrolytes, and separators. Notably, the separator, a pivotal and indispensable component in LIBs that primarily consists of a porous membrane material, warrants significant research attention. Researchers have thus endeavored to develop innovative systems that enhance separator performance, fortify security measures, and address prevailing limitations. Herein, this review aims to furnish researchers with comprehensive content on battery separator membranes, encompassing performance requirements, functional parameters, manufacturing protocols, scientific progress, and overall performance evaluations. Specifically, it investigates the latest breakthroughs in porous membrane design, fabrication, modification, and optimization that employ various commonly used or emerging polymeric materials. Furthermore, the article offers insights into the future trajectory of polymer-based composite membranes for LIB applications and prospective challenges awaiting scientific exploration. The robust and durable membranes developed have shown superior efficacy across diverse applications. Consequently, these proposed concepts pave the way for a circular economy that curtails waste materials, lowers process costs, and mitigates the environmental footprint.

Assessing Formability and Failure of UHMWPE Sheets through SPIF: A Case Study in Medical Applications

This work presents a comprehensive investigation of an experimental study conducted on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) sheets using single point incremental forming (SPIF). The analysis is performed within a previously established research framework to evaluate formability and failure characteristics, including necking and fracture, in both conventional Nakajima tests and incremental sheet forming specimens. The experimental design of the SPIF tests incorporates process parameters such as spindle speed and step down to assess their impact on the formability of the material and the corresponding failure modes. The results indicate that a higher step down value has a positive effect on formability in the SPIF context. The study has identified the tool trajectory in SPIF as the primary influencing factor in the twisting failure mode. Implementing a bidirectional tool trajectory effectively reduced instances of twisting. Additionally, this work explores a medical case study that examines the manufacturing of a polyethylene liner device for a total hip replacement. This investigation critically analyses the manufacturing of plastic liner using SPIF, focusing on its formability and the elastic recovery exhibited by the material.

Influence of Diabase Filler on the Structure and Tribological Properties of Coatings Based on Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene

This article presents the results of a study of a composite coating made of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with a diabase filler obtained by flame spraying. Diabase of 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 30 wt.% and 40 wt.% was chosen as a filler. The polymer coating was applied to the St3 metal substrate using temperature control in a conventional flame spraying process. The coating was studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray phase analysis, infrared spectroscopy, abrasive wear resistance, microhardness testing and determination of the friction coefficient. It has been shown that diabases do not have a negative effect on the initial chemical structure of UHMWPE and it is not subjected to destruction during flame spraying. The introduction of diabase into the composition of UHMWPE with a content of 10-40% of the total mass does not adversely affect the crystalline structure of the coating. It has been established that with an increase in the volume of the diabase filler, the wear resistance of the composite coating based on UHMWPE increases. It has been determined that with the addition of diabase, the microhardness of the coatings increases.

Description of Poly(aryl-ether-ketone) Materials (PAEKs), Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) for Application as a Dental Material: A Materials Science Review

Poly(aryl-ether-ketone) materials (PAEKs), a class of high-performance polymers comprised of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), have attracted interest in standard dental procedures due to their inherent characteristics in terms of mechanical and biological properties. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a restorative dental material widely used for prosthetic frameworks due to its superior physical, mechanical, aesthetic, and handling features. Meanwhile, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic embraced in the additive manufacturing market. In the present review study, a new way to fabricate high-performance polymers, particularly PEEK and PEKK, is demonstrated using additive manufacturing digital dental technology, or 3-dimensional (3D) printing. The focus in this literature review will encompass an investigation of the chemical, mechanical, and biological properties of HPPs, particularly PEEK and PEKK, along with their application particularly in dentistry. High-performance polymers have gained popularity in denture prosthesis in advance dentistry due to their flexibility in terms of manufacturing and the growing interest in utilizing additive manufacturing in denture fabrication. Further, this review also explores the literature regarding the properties of high-performance polymers (HPP) compared to previous reported polymers in terms of the dental material along with the current advancement of the digital designing and manufacturing.

All-Fabric Triboelectric Nanogenerator (AF-TENG) Smart Face Mask: Remote Long-Rate Breathing Monitoring and Apnea Alarm

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of face masks has become not only mandatory in several countries but also an acceptable approach for combating the pandemic. In the quest for designing an effective and useful face mask, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been recently proposed. Novel functionalities are provided with the use of TENGs in face masks due to the induced triboelectrification generated by the exhaled and inhaled breath, allowing their use as an energy sensor. Nonetheless, within the face mask, the presence of nontextile plastics or other common triboelectric (TE) materials can be undesired. Herein, we propose the use of an all-fabric TENG (AF-TENG) with the use of high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and cotton fabric as negative and positive triboelectric layers, respectively. With these materials, it is possible to detect the breathing of the patient, which in the case of not detecting a signal over a few minutes can trigger an alarm locally, providing valuable time. Also, in this article, we have sent breathing signals locally and remotely to distances up to 20 km via Wi-Fi and LoRa, the same as warning signals in the case of detecting anomalies. This work reveals the use of TENGs in smart face masks as an important tool to be used in difficult epidemiological periods to the general public, bringing much more comfort and relaxation to patients and elderly in today's society, and based on pristine eco-friendly materials.

Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Modifications Produced by Carbon Nanotubes and Fe2O3 Nanoparticles

Thin sheets of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), both in pristine form and containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (NPs) at different concentrations, were prepared. The CNT and Fe₂O₃ NP weight percentages used ranged from 0.01% to 1%. The presence of CNTs and Fe₂O₃ NPs in UHMWPE was confirmed by transmission and scanning electron microscopy and by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDS). The effects of the embedded nanostructures on the UHMWPE samples were studied using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The ATR-FTIR spectra show the characteristic features of the UHMWPE, CNTs, and Fe₂O₃. Concerning the optical properties, regardless of the type of embedded nanostructures, an increase in the optical absorption was observed. The allowed direct optical energy gap value was determined from the optical absorption spectra: in both cases, it decreases with increasing CNT or Fe₂O₃ NP concentrations. The obtained results will be presented and discussed.

Replication Study of Molded Micro-Textured Samples Made of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene for Medical Applications

In articular joint implants, polymeric inserts are usually exploited for on-contact sliding surfaces to guarantee low friction and wear, a high load-bearing capacity, impact strength and stiffness, and biocompatibility. Surface micro-structuring can drastically reduce friction and wear by promoting hydrostatic friction due to synovial fluid. Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a suitable material for these applications due to its strong chemical resistance, excellent resistance to stress, cracking, abrasion, and wear, and self-lubricating property. However, surface micro-texturing of UHMWPE is hardly achievable with the currently available processes. The present study investigates UHMWPE's micro-textured surface replication capability via injection molding, comparing the results with the more easily processable High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Four different micro-texture cavities were designed and fabricated on a steel mold by micro-EDM milling, and used for the experimental campaign. Complete samples were fabricated with both materials. Then, the mold and samples were geometrically characterized, considering the dimensions of the features and the texture layout. The replication analysis showed that HDPE samples present geometrical errors that span from 1% to 9% resulting in an average error of 4.3%. In comparison, the UHMWPE samples display a higher variability, although still acceptable, with percentage errors ranging from 2% to 31% and an average error of 11.4%.

Analysis of Stress Relaxation in Bulk and Porous Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)

The reported study was devoted to the investigation of viscoelastic behavior for solid and porous ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) under compression. The obtained experimental stress curves were interpreted using a two-term Prony series to represent the superposition of two coexisting activation processes corresponding to long molecular (~160 s) and short structural (~20 s) time scales, respectively, leading to good statistical correlation with the observations. In the case of porous polymer, the internal strain redistribution during relaxation was quantified using digital image correlation (DIC) analysis. The strongly inhomogeneous deformation of the porous polymer was found not to affect the relaxation times. To illustrate the possibility of generalizing the results to three dimensions, X-ray tomography was used to examine the porous structure relaxation at the macro- and micro-scale levels. DIC analysis revealed positive correlation between the applied force and relative density. The apparent stiffness variation for UHMWPE foams with mixed open and closed cells was described using a newly proposed three-term expression. Furthermore, in situ tensile loading and X-ray scattering study was applied for isotropic solid UHMWPE specimens to investigate the evolution of internal structure and orientation during drawing and stress relaxation in another loading mode.

Sterilization of Polymeric Implants: Challenges and Opportunities

Degradable and environmentally responsive polymers have been actively developed for drug delivery and regenerative medicine applications, yet inadequate consideration of their compatibility with terminal sterilization presents notable barriers to clinical translation. This Review discusses industry-established terminal sterilization methods and aseptic processing and contrasts them with innovative approaches aimed at preserving the integrity of polymeric implants. Regulatory guidelines, fiscal considerations, and potential pitfalls are discussed to encourage early integration of sterility regulatory considerations in material designs.

Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (marPOR) is a Suitable Material for the Reconstruction of Orbital Floor Fracture Defects in Human Cadavers

Purpose

Despite there being different materials for orbital floor reconstruction available today, outcomes are still not satisfying. In recent years, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has gained popularity in the field of orthopedic surgery due to its good biocompatibility and low infection rate. With its three-dimensional compound structure, it combines high stability and ductility, making it a potential material to be used for orbital floor reconstruction.

Methods

In a cadaver study, an overall of eighteen orbits were included. Fractures of the inferior wall were induced and then reconstructed using Polyglactin 910/PDS composite (Ethisorb) and UHMWPE (marPOR). Orbits were scanned by cone-beam CT in each condition: Intact, fractured and reconstructed with Ethisorb, marPOR 0.85 mm and marPOR 1.5 mm. Segmented orbital volumes were calculated by specialized software (Disior bonelogic CMF).

Results

All materials led to sufficient reconstruction of the initial orbital volumes (Ethisorb: p < 0.001; marPOR 0.85 mm: p = 0.003; marPOR 1.5 mm: p < 0.001). Orbits that were reconstructed with marPOR 0.85 mm showed the least mean volume difference from intact orbital volumes.

Conclusion

UHMWPE (marPOR) offers reliable reconstruction of orbital floor fractures combined with good stability, ductility and biocompatibility.

Cyclic Impact Compaction of an Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Powder and Properties of the Compacts

Experiments on Cyclic Impact Compaction (CIC) of UHMWPE powder GUR 4120 were carried out on a laboratory hydro-pneumatic impact device. This device provides impact energies of up to 1 kJ with a frequency of impacts of 9 s^-1 and enables producing dense and robust compacts in the form of disks with a diameter of up to 60 mm and a height of up to 24 mm. The optimal parameters of the CIC were determined, which are the preheating temperature of the powder, the impact energy and the number of impacts. The strength, Brinell hardness and elongation of the resulting compacts with a diameter of 40 mm and a height of 15 mm were 37.5 MPa, 49.0 MPa and 470%, respectively. The possibility of activating UHMWPE powder by explosive loading was studied. It was found that the explosive pretreatment reduces the mechanical properties of the resultant compacts. The CIC method is suitable for the manufacture of UHMWPE-based composites with nano-additives, as evidenced by the successful production of compacts containing nanoscale detonation carbon as an additive. The results of the present study show that the CIC method is promising for the industrial production of small-sized UHMWPE parts.

Development and Characterization of LLDPE Blends with Different UHMWPE Concentrations Obtained by Hot Pressing

To modify its characteristics, expand its applicability, and, in some cases, its processability, new blends using ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) have been developed. In this study, three different formulations of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and UHMWPE blends were prepared with 15, 30, and 45% (% w/w) UHMWPE in the LLDPE matrix. All mixtures were prepared by hot pressing and were immersed in water for one hour afterwards at a controlled temperature of 90 °C to relieve the internal stresses that developed during the forming process. The thermal characterization showed that the blends showed endothermic peaks with different melting temperatures, which may be the result of co-crystallization without mixing between the polymers during the forming process. The mechanical characteristics presented are typical of a ductile material, but with the increase in the percentage of UHMWPE, there was a decrease in the ductility of the blends, as the elongation at rupture of the blends was higher than that of the pure components. The morphologies observed by SEM indicate that there were two phases in the blends. This is the result of the system’s immiscibility due to the mode of preparation of the blends, wherein the two polymers may not have mixed intimately, confirming the results found with the thermal analyses.

Effect of Reinforced Self-Cured Acrylic Resin on Flexural Strength

Introduction

The aim of this study was to determine the effect on the flexural strength of the self-cured acrylic resin by incorporating short E-glass fiber (SEGF) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) filler in the acrylic resin.

Methods

Fifty-six rectangular (64 × 10 × 3.3 mm³) (ISO standard 20795–1:2013) self-cured acrylic resin specimens were fabricated and divided into seven groups per test, according to the percent by weight of SEGF and UHMW-PE filler (n = 8). Each testing group entails a control group and an addition of 1% and 2% SEGF, 1% and 2% UHMW-PE, 0.5% SEGF/UHMW-PE, and 1% SEGF/UHMW-PE. A three-point bending test was conducted to obtain the flexural strength of each specimen. The fractured surfaces of the specimens were evaluated, and a scanning electron microscope view was taken. Test results were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (p value<0.05).

Results

The flexural strength of self-cured acrylic resin with the addition of 1% SEGF and 1% SEGF/UHMW-PE (50.93, 46.13 MPa) was significantly higher than that of the control group (41.72 MPa) (p < 0.05). Nonetheless, the addition of 1% UHMW-PE (39.34 MPa) showed the lowest flexural strength, significantly lower than other experimental groups, except the control group.

Conclusion

The addition of 1% SEGF significantly improves the flexural strength of the self-cured acrylic resin denture base.

Two-Layer Rubber-Based Composite Material and UHMWPE with High Wear Resistance

The aim of the study is the development of two-layer materials based on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and isoprene rubber (IR) depending on the vulcanization accelerators (2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), diphenylguanidine (DPG), and tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD)). The article presents the study of the influence of these accelerators on the properties and structure of UHMWPE. It is shown that the use of accelerators to modify UHMWPE leads to an increase in tensile strength of 28–53%, a relative elongation at fracture of 7–23%, and wear resistance of three times compared to the original UHMWPE. It has been determined that the introduction of selected vulcanization accelerators into UHMWPE leads to an increase in adhesion between the polymer and rubber. The study of the interfacial boundary of a two-layer material with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that the structure is characterized by the presence of UHMWPE fibrils localized in the rubber material due to mechanical adhesion.

Functional Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Composites for Ligament Reconstructions and Their Targeted Applications in the Restoration of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament

The selection of biomaterials as biomedical implants is a significant challenge. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and composites of such kind have been extensively used in medical implants, notably in the bearings of the hip, knee, and other joint prostheses, owing to its biocompatibility and high wear resistance. For the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) graft, synthetic UHMWPE is an ideal candidate due to its biocompatibility and extremely high tensile strength. However, significant problems are observed in UHMWPE based implants, such as wear debris and oxidative degradation. To resolve the issue of wear and to enhance the life of UHMWPE as an implant, in recent years, this field has witnessed numerous innovative methodologies such as biofunctionalization or high temperature melting of UHMWPE to enhance its toughness and strength. The surface functionalization/modification/treatment of UHMWPE is very challenging as it requires optimizing many variables, such as surface tension and wettability, active functional groups on the surface, irradiation, and protein immobilization to successfully improve the mechanical properties of UHMWPE and reduce or eliminate the wear or osteolysis of the UHMWPE implant. Despite these difficulties, several surface roughening, functionalization, and irradiation processing technologies have been developed and applied in the recent past. The basic research and direct industrial applications of such material improvement technology are very significant, as evidenced by the significant number of published papers and patents. However, the available literature on research methodology and techniques related to material property enhancement and protection from wear of UHMWPE is disseminated, and there is a lack of a comprehensive source for the research community to access information on the subject matter. Here we provide an overview of recent developments and core challenges in the surface modification/functionalization/irradiation of UHMWPE and apply these findings to the case study of UHMWPE for ACL repair.

Probing lubricated sliding wear properties of HDPE/UHMWPE hybrid bionanocomposite

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and its derivatives have been clinically used as an acetabular liner material in total hip joint replacement (THR) over last six decades. Despite significant efforts, the longevity of UHMWPE implants is still impaired due to their compromised tribological performance, leading to osteolysis and aseptic loosening. The present study aims to critically evaluate and analyze the tribological performance, of the next generation acetabular liner material, that is, a chemically modified graphene oxide (GO) reinforced HDPE/UHMWPE (HU) bionanocomposite (HUmGO), against stainless steel (SS 316L) counterface in lubricated conditions. This work also provides a performance comparative assessment of HUmGO with respect to medical grades, UHMWPE (UC) and crosslinked UHMWPE (XL-UC). Significant attempts have been made to correlate the tribological properties (frictional behavior, wear rate, wear debris shape and size, wear mechanism) with the physicomechanical conditions (contact stresses) at sliding contact and the variation in molecular architecture of different UHMWPE materials. Additionally, an emphasis is put forward to critically anlyze the nature of lubrication regime based on the bearing characterstic parameters. HUmGO exhibited a lower COF (0.07) and specific wear rate (2.86 × 10^-8 mm³/Nm) than UC and XL-UC under identical sliding conditions. The worn surfaces on HUmGO revealed the signatures of less abrasive wear and limited deformation. Based on the estimated lambda (λ) ratio and Sommerfield number, all the investigated sliding contacts exhibited boundary lubrication. Taken together, the modified GO reinforced HDPE/UHMWPE bionanocomposite can be considered as a new generation biomaterial for the fabrication of acetabular liner for hip-joint prosthesis.

Template Electrochemical Synthesis of Hydroxyapatite on a Titania–Silver Composite Surface for Potential Use in Implantology

Modern materials science, both in terms of functional and structural materials, is actively developing towards the creation of structures with a given ordering. A wide range of methods involves ordering the structure according to a template shape. Template synthesis is one of the mots wide-spread approaches. Most often, the template synthesis method is implemented under conditions of limiting the growth of the phase due to the geometry of the template. In the present work, a template electrochemical method is considered for calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating synthesis, based on the replication of the planar template texture during deposition. In this case, the template is an array of silver microparticles immobilized on an electrically conductive substrate, separated by an insulator layer. The developed approach is similar to the mask metallization widely used in planar technology. In this work, the possibility of the template pulsed electrodeposition of ceramics rather than metal is shown using HAp as an example. This approach is interesting for materials science, in particular, for obtaining micro-ordered hydroxyapatite structures—a crystallochemical analogue of the inorganic bone tissue component—on the surface of bone implants, which can be implemented to improve their biomedical characteristics. As a result of our study, we experimentally determined the conditions for obtaining the composite coating TiO2/Ag/Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 with controlled phase structure, topology and localization of components on the surface, which was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, and X-ray Diffraction (SEM, EDS and XRD). The absence of cytotoxicity for the osteoblast-like cells of the developed coating was revealed by cytological tests.

Biologically modified implantation as therapeutic bioabsorbable materials for bone defect repair

For decades, researches have concentrated on the mechanical properties, biodegradation, and biocompatibility of implants used in the therapy of large size bone defect. In vivo studies demonstrate that bioabsorbable bone substitute materials can reduce the risk of common symptoms such as inflammation and osteonecrosis caused by bio-inert materials after long-term implantation. Several organic, inorganic, and composite materials have been approved for clinical application, based on their unique characteristics and advantages. Although some artificial bioabsorbable bone substitute materials have been used for years, there are still some disadvantages existing, such as low mechanical strength, high brittleness, and low degradation rate. Therefore, novel bioabsorbable composite materials biomaterials have been developed for bone defect repair. In this review, we provide an overview of the development of artificial bioabsorbable bone substitute materials and highlight the advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, recent advances in bioabsorbable bone substitute materials used in bone defect repair are outlined. Finally, we discuss current challenges and further developments in the clinical application of bioabsorbable bone substitute materials.

Structure and Performance Attributes Optimization and Ranking of Gamma Irradiated Polymer Hybrids for Industrial Application

The selection of suitable composite material for high-strength industrial applications, from the list of available alternatives, is a tedious task as it requires an optimized structural performance-based solution. This study aimed to optimize the concentration of fillers, i.e., vinyl tri-ethoxy silane and absorbed gamma-dose, to enhance the properties of an industrial scale polymer, i.e., ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The UHMWPE hybrids, in addition to silane, were treated with (30, 65, and 100 kGy) gamma dose and then tested for ten application-specific structural and performance attributes. The relative importance of attributes based on an 11-point fuzzy conversation was used for establishing the material assessment graph and corresponding adjacency matrix. Afterwards, the normalized values of attributes were used to establish the decision matrix for each alternative. The normalization was performed after the identification of high obligatory valued (HOV) and low obligatory valued (LOV) attributes. After this, suitability index values (SIVs) were calculated for ranking the hybrids that revealed hybrids 65 kGy irradiated the hybrid as the best choice and ranked as first among the existing alternatives. The major responsible factors were higher oxidation strength, a dense cross-linking network, and elongation at break. The values of the aforementioned factors for 65 kGy irradiated hybrids were 0.24, 91, and 360 MPa, respectively, as opposed to 0.54, 75, and 324 MPa for 100 kGy irradiated hybrids, thus placing the latter in second place regarding higher values of Yield Strength and Young Modulus. Finally, it is believed that the reported results and proposed model in this study will improve preoperative planning as far as considering these hybrids for high-strength industrial applications including total joint arthroplasty, textile-machinery pickers, dump trucks lining ships, and harbors bumpers and sliding, etc.

Effect of Borpolymer on Mechanical and Structural Parameters of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene

The paper presents the results of studying the effect of borpolymer (BP) on the mechanical properties, structure, and thermodynamic parameters of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Changes in the mechanical characteristics of polymer composites material (PCM) are confirmed and complemented by structural studies. X-ray crystallography (XRC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and infrared spectroscopy (IR) were used to study the melting point, morphology and composition of the filler, which corresponds to the composition and data of the certificate of the synthesized BP. Tensile and compressive mechanical tests were carried out in accordance with generally accepted standards (ASTM). It is shown that BP is an effective modifier for UHMWPE, contributing to a significant increase in the deformation and strength characteristics of the composite: tensile strength of PCM by 56%, elongation at break by 28% and compressive strength at 10% strain by 65% compared to the initial UHMWPE, due to intensive changes in the supramolecular structure of the matrix. Structural studies revealed that BP does not chemically interact with UHMWPE, but due to its high adhesion to the polymer, it acts as a reinforcing filler. SEM was used to establish the formation of a spherulite supramolecular structure of polymer composites.

Mesoporous Membrane Materials Based on Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene: From Synthesis to Applied Aspects

The development of new porous polymeric materials with nanoscale pore dimensions and controlled morphology presents a challenging problem of modern materials and membrane science, which should be based on scientifically justified approaches with the emphasis on ecological issues. This work offers a facile and sustainable strategy allowing preparation of porous nanostructured materials based on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) via the mechanism of environmental intercrystallite crazing and their detailed characterization by diverse physicochemical methods, including SEM, TEM, AFM, liquid and gas permeability, DSC, etc. The resultant porous UHMWPE materials are characterized by high porosity (up to ~45%), pore interconnectivity, nanoscale pore dimensions (below 10 nm), high water vapor permeability [1700 g/(m² × day)] and high gas permeability (the Gurley number ~300 s), selectivity, and good mechanical properties. The applied benefits of the advanced UHMWPE mesoporous materials as efficient membranes, breathable, waterproof, and insulating materials, light-weight materials with reduced density, gas capture and storage systems, porous substrates and scaffolds are discussed.

Supported permethylindenyl titanium catalysts for the synthesis of disentangled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (disUHMWPE)

Novel permethylindenyl-phenoxide (PHENI*) ansa-metallocene titanium complexes have been synthesised and immobilised on inorganic solid supports to afford highly effective catalysts for slurry-phase ethylene polymerisation. When supported on solid polymethylaluminoxane these complexes were both extremely active (up to 3.7 × 10⁶ g_PE mol_Ti^-1 h^-1 bar^-1) and produced substantially disentangled polyethylene with a weight-average molecular weight (M_w) of 3.4 MDa (disUHMWPE).

Effect of Oxidative Stress on Bone Remodeling in Periprosthetic Osteolysis

The success of implant performance and arthroplasty is based on several factors, including oxidative stress-induced osteolysis. Oxidative stress is a key factor of the inflammatory response. Implant biomaterials can release wear particles which may elicit adverse reactions in patients, such as local inflammatory response leading to tissue damage, which eventually results in loosening of the implant. Wear debris undergo phagocytosis by macrophages, inducing a low-grade chronic inflammation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In addition, ROS can also be directly produced by prosthetic biomaterial oxidation. Overall, ROS amplify the inflammatory response and stimulate both RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis and osteoblast apoptosis, resulting in bone resorption, leading to periprosthetic osteolysis. Therefore, a growing understanding of the mechanism of oxidative stress-induced periprosthetic osteolysis and anti-oxidant strategies of implant design as well as the addition of anti-oxidant agents will help to improve implants’ performances and therapeutic approaches.

Recent Developments in Coatings for Orthopedic Metallic Implants

Titanium, stainless steel, and CoCrMo alloys are the most widely used biomaterials for orthopedic applications. The most common causes of orthopedic implant failure after implantation are infections, inflammatory response, least corrosion resistance, mismatch in elastic modulus, stress shielding, and excessive wear. To address the problems associated with implant materials, different modifications related to design, materials, and surface have been developed. Among the different methods, coating is an effective method to improve the performance of implant materials. In this article, a comprehensive review of recent studies has been carried out to summarize the impact of coating materials on metallic implants. The antibacterial characteristics, biodegradability, biocompatibility, corrosion behavior, and mechanical properties for performance evaluation are briefly summarized. Different effective coating techniques, coating materials, and additives have been summarized. The results are useful to produce the coating with optimized properties.

CeO2 Nanoparticle-Containing Polymers for Biomedical Applications: A Review

The development of advanced composite biomaterials combining the versatility and biodegradability of polymers and the unique characteristics of metal oxide nanoparticles unveils new horizons in emerging biomedical applications, including tissue regeneration, drug delivery and gene therapy, theranostics and medical imaging. Nanocrystalline cerium(IV) oxide, or nanoceria, stands out from a crowd of other metal oxides as being a truly unique material, showing great potential in biomedicine due to its low systemic toxicity and numerous beneficial effects on living systems. The combination of nanoceria with new generations of biomedical polymers, such as PolyHEMA (poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-based hydrogels, electrospun nanofibrous polycaprolactone or natural-based chitosan or cellulose, helps to expand the prospective area of applications by facilitating their bioavailability and averting potential negative effects. This review describes recent advances in biomedical polymeric material practices, highlights up-to-the-minute cerium oxide nanoparticle applications, as well as polymer-nanoceria composites, and aims to address the question: how can nanoceria enhance the biomedical potential of modern polymeric materials?

Recent Advances in UHMWPE/UHMWPE Nanocomposite/UHMWPE Hybrid Nanocomposite Polymer Coatings for Tribological Applications: A Comprehensive Review

In the recent past, polymer coatings have gained the attention of many researchers due to their low cost, their ability to be coated easily on different substrates, low friction and good anti-corrosion properties. Various polymers such as polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyurethane (PU), polyamide (PA), epoxy and ultra-high molecular weight polytheylene (UHMWPE) have been used to develop these coatings to modify the surfaces of different components to protect them from wear and corrosion. However, among all these polymers, UHMWPE stands out as a tribologist’s polymer due to its low friction and high wear resistance. These coatings have found their way into applications ranging from microelectro mechanical systems (MEMS) to demanding tribological applications such as bearings and biomedical applications. Despite its excellent tribological properties, UHMWPE suffers from limitations such as low load bearing capacity and low thermal stability. To overcome these challenges researchers have developed various routes such as developing UHMWPE composite and hybrid composite coatings with several types of nano/micro fillers, developing composite films system and developing dual film systems. The present paper is an effort to summarize these various routes adopted by different researchers to improve the tribological performance of UHMWPE coatings.

A New Approach Based on Glued Multi-Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Forms to Fabricate Bone Replacement Products

Three types of glue based on thiol-ene reaction, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/cellulose, and phenol formaldehyde were prepared and applied on modified ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) samples grafted by cellulose. In comparison with unmodified UHMWPE samples, T-peel tests on the modified and grafted UHMWPE films showed an increase in the peel strength values for the glues based on thiol-ene reaction, PVA/cellulose, and phenol formaldehyde by 40, 29, and 41 times, respectively. The maximum peel strength value of 0.62 Kg/cm was obtained for the glue based on phenol formaldehyde. Mechanical tests for the cylindrical multi-UHMWPE forms samples, made of porous UHMWPE as a trabecular layer and an armored layer (cortical layer) that consists of bulk and UHMWPE films, indicated an improvement in the mechanical properties of these samples for all glue types, as a result of the UHMWPE films existence and the increase in the number of their layers. The maximum compressive yield strength and compressive modulus values for the armored layer (bulk and six layers of the UHMWPE films using the glue based on thiol-ene reaction) were 44.1 MPa (an increase of 17%) and 1130 MPa (an increase of 36%), respectively, in comparison with one armored layer of bulk UHMWPE. A hemocompatibility test carried out on these glues clarified that the modified UHMWPE grafted by cellulose with glues based on PVA/cellulose and thiol-ene reaction were classified as biocompatible materials. These multi-UHMWPE forms composites can be considered a promising development for joint reconstruction.

Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene/Titanium-Hybrid Implant for Bone-Defect Replacement

A hybrid implant with a structure mimicking that of natural bone was developed. Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V prepared with three-dimensional (3D)-printing technology was used to simulate the cortical-bone layer. The mismatch in the mechanical properties of bone and titanium alloy was solved by creating special perforations in the titanium's surface. Porous ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with high osteogenous properties was used to simulate the cancellous-bone tissue. A method for creating a porous UHMWPE structure inside the titanium reinforcement is proposed. The porous UHMWPE was studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM) to confirm that the pores that formed were open, interconnected, and between 50 and 850 μm in size. Mechanical-compression tests done on the obtained UHMWPE/titanium-hybrid-implant samples showed that their mechanical properties simulated those of natural bone.

Taguchi Optimization of Parameters for Feedstock Fabrication and FDM Manufacturing of Wear-Resistant UHMWPE-Based Composites

It is believed that the structure and properties of parts fabricated by additive (i.e., non-stationary) manufacturing are slightly worse compared to hot pressing. To further proceed with improving the quality of Fused Deposition Modeling 3D-printed parts, the ‘UHMWPE + 17 wt.% HDPE-g-SMA + 12 wt.% PP’ composite feedstock fabrication parameters, by the twin-screw extruder compounding and 3D printing (the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process), were optimized using the Taguchi method. The optimization was carried out over the results of mechanical tests. The obtained results were interpreted in terms of (1) the uniformity of mixing of the polymer components upon compounding and (2) the homogeneity of the structure formed by the 3D printing. The values of the main factors (the processing parameters) were determined using the Taguchi method. Their application made it possible to improve the physical, mechanical, and tribological properties of the samples manufactured by the FDM method at the level of neat UHMWPE as well as the UHMWPE-based composites fabricated by compression sintering. A comparative analysis of the structure, as well as the mechanical and tribological properties of the composite obtained by the FDM method, and the hot pressing from ‘optimized’ feedstock was performed. The ‘UHMWPE + 17 wt.% HDPE-g-SMA + 12 wt.% PP’ composites fabricated by the optimal compounding and 3D printing parameters can be implemented for the additive manufacturing of complex shape products (including medical implants, transport, mining, and processing industries; in particular, in the Far North).

Wear Resistant Nanocomposites Based on Biomedical Grade UHMWPE Paraffin Oil and Carbon Nano-Filler: Preliminary Biocompatibility and Antibacterial Activity Investigation

In the present paper, we investigate the effectiveness of nanocomposites (composed of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) mixed with carbon nano-filler (CNF) and medical grade paraffin oil (PO), from the biological point of view. Wear measurements were carried out without (air) and with lubricant (distilled water, natural, and artificial lubricant), and antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity were evaluated. The results highlighted that the presence of CNF is important in the nanocomposite formulation because it reduces the wear rate and prevents oxidative degradation during its processing. An amount of 1.0 wt % of CNF is best because it reaches the optimal distribution within the polymeric matrix, resulting in the best wear resistant, bio-active, and anti-bacterial nanocomposite among all investigated samples.
